Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: Not | :00:15. | :00:18.
proven - the case against hearts fan accused of a sectarian attack | :00:18. | :00:23.
on Celtic manager Neil Lennon. But John Wilson is found guilty of | :00:23. | :00:33.
:00:33. | :00:33. | ||
breach of the peace. This criticism of thousand Crown Office handled | :00:33. | :00:36.
the case. The gap widens between how much we drink in Scotland | :00:36. | :00:41.
compared with people in England and Wales. And how much wine would you | :00:41. | :00:48.
drink in a week? About two bottles. More than you're supposed to. | :00:48. | :00:52.
I didn't think it was that much. The figures come as people in | :00:52. | :00:55.
Glasgow are warned they could lose their homes if they don't control | :00:55. | :01:03.
their children's underage drinking. Also ahead tonight: I'm live in the | :01:03. | :01:08.
Borders where thieves are stealing manhole covers and it is costing | :01:08. | :01:13.
tense of thousands of pounds and putting lives at risk. And in sport, | :01:13. | :01:16.
we'll have the latest comings and goings as the clock counts down on | :01:16. | :01:20.
the final hours of the transfer window. A fan who ran on to the | :01:20. | :01:23.
pitch at Tynecastle last May and punched the Celtic manager Neil | :01:23. | :01:25.
Lennon has been cleared of sectarian assault. John Wilson | :01:25. | :01:28.
admitted in court that he did assault Mr Lennon that night, but | :01:28. | :01:32.
the jury found the charges against him not proven. He was convicted of | :01:32. | :01:42.
:01:42. | :01:46. | ||
a breach of the peace. The jury also removed a charge that that was | :01:46. | :01:55.
motivated by religious prejudice. The hand shakes hid tension, there | :01:55. | :02:00.
was haudge pressure on this tie. Every point crucial in the last few | :02:00. | :02:06.
games of season. The mood was said to be volatile and poisonous. | :02:06. | :02:13.
Hooper! Scores again! When Celtic scored, Hearts fan John Wilson went | :02:13. | :02:18.
mad. He ran on to the pitch, charged at the away team dug out | :02:18. | :02:24.
and lunged at Neil Lennon. In the witness stand, John Wilson admitted | :02:24. | :02:29.
shouting and swearing at Neil Lennon and admitted hitting him. | :02:29. | :02:35.
But the jury found the charge of assault not proven. And they | :02:35. | :02:42.
accepted his denials that he utter words of Lynnous nature. These | :02:42. | :02:46.
cases are difficult to prosecute and has been demonstrated, even | :02:46. | :02:50.
when you have a high visibility offence with many witnesses and the | :02:50. | :02:54.
offence in front of television cameras, bringing the religious | :02:54. | :02:59.
element into the charge may have been a mistake. 26-year-old John | :02:59. | :03:04.
Wilson said his dad's a Catholic and testifyed he has had his | :03:04. | :03:09.
daughter christened a Catholic and said he condemned sectarianianism. | :03:09. | :03:16.
Security manager, Peter Croy said he heard John Wilson swear and | :03:16. | :03:22.
shout sectarianian abuse. But John Wilson denied this and said Mr Croy | :03:22. | :03:28.
may have misheard one syllable. John Wilson has written an apology | :03:28. | :03:33.
to Len. The incident followed death threats to Neil Lennon. Hearts say | :03:33. | :03:40.
wills wis was banned for life. -- John Wilson. Wilson remains in | :03:40. | :03:43.
custody and he has been found guilty of breach of the peace and | :03:43. | :03:52.
will be sentenced later. Reevel Alderson joins us now. This verdict | :03:52. | :03:55.
might seem incredible to many people. Because according to the | :03:55. | :04:02.
outcome, there was no assault. Absolutely. It is a very strange | :04:02. | :04:08.
verdict. Yes, John Wilson admitted breach of the peace and has been | :04:08. | :04:12.
convicted. In terms of the assault. Let's look at the evidence. Which | :04:12. | :04:17.
we saw in the report. But let's look again. John Wilson comes on to | :04:17. | :04:24.
the pitch. He runs along the touch line and he attacks Neil Lennon. | :04:24. | :04:29.
That is as clear a case of assault as you can possibly imagine. It | :04:29. | :04:34.
took place in front of 16,000 people and in front of thousands of | :04:34. | :04:38.
television viewers and many more people have witnessed it. So why | :04:38. | :04:43.
did the jury come to this verdict? Well they had two charges, breach | :04:43. | :04:48.
of the peace and assault. In each case, there was a suggestion that | :04:48. | :04:54.
these were aggravated by racial prejudice. Sectarianian prejudice. | :04:54. | :04:57.
The jury deleted that from the breach of the peace charge. They | :04:57. | :05:01.
said it was a breach of the peace N temperatures of the assault they | :05:01. | :05:07.
took that out and then found John Wilson not proven on that charge. | :05:07. | :05:12.
They have acquitted. It is an incredible verdict and puzzled many | :05:12. | :05:17.
lawyers. What does the verdict say about the Scottish Government's | :05:17. | :05:21.
attempts to crackdown on sectarianianism? The Government | :05:21. | :05:27.
said they would legislate quickly, then they decided a -- to hold back. | :05:27. | :05:33.
I'm sure they are glad, because the world has seen an asaut in a match, | :05:33. | :05:40.
which the courts cannot bring a conviction on. Thank you. Scots are | :05:40. | :05:43.
drinking a lot more pure alcohol every year than the English and | :05:43. | :05:47.
Welsh and the gap is getting bigger. In fact, on average, every year, we | :05:47. | :05:50.
drink 2.2 litres more than people in the rest of Britain. But new | :05:50. | :05:53.
figures from the NHS suggest the problem drinkers might not be who | :05:53. | :05:55.
you'd expect. Our Health Correspondent, Eleanor Bradford, is | :05:55. | :06:03.
with me with more. Scotland still has a drink problem, but it's not | :06:03. | :06:07.
the people you might expect who are fuelling it. Sales of beer, cider, | :06:07. | :06:12.
and fortified wine have actually fallen since the mid-1990's. Sales | :06:12. | :06:15.
of alcopops and ready-mixed drinks have also fallen since they hit the | :06:15. | :06:22.
market a decade ago. Sales of spirits have remained constant. | :06:22. | :06:26.
It's wine that has seen the boom in sales. Sales have more than doubled | :06:26. | :06:31.
over a decade-and-a-half. What we're also seeing is a big rise in | :06:31. | :06:34.
people buying booze, especially wine, to drink at home. Off sales | :06:34. | :06:38.
have increased by half. So is it wine quaffing respectable people | :06:38. | :06:48.
:06:48. | :06:54. | ||
who are now Scotland's problem drinkers? I think the more people | :06:54. | :07:01.
are drinking wine. And less spirits. The taste of it, generally eating | :07:01. | :07:07.
and drirching is a big part of what we do. -- drinking. It mixes well | :07:07. | :07:14.
with food. How much wine would you drink? In a week? About two bottles. | :07:14. | :07:20.
More than you're supposed to. really? I didn't think it was that | :07:20. | :07:24.
much. That according to one charity, is part of the problem. Tfrpblgt | :07:24. | :07:29.
focus is frequently on young people -- The focus is frequently on young | :07:29. | :07:34.
people and alcoholics and that allows people to say, it is not my | :07:34. | :07:39.
point and point over in the corner at the youth binge drinkers, | :07:39. | :07:43.
without looking at the binge wine drinkers. Who are not necessarily | :07:43. | :07:48.
involved in disorder. While England and Wales has seen a decline in | :07:48. | :07:52.
drinking in the last five year, the same is not happening in Scotland. | :07:52. | :07:57.
We're drinking as much as ever and enough for every adult to exceed | :07:57. | :08:02.
the recommended limits each week of the year. Thank you. Meantime, | :08:02. | :08:05.
people in Glasgow have been told they could lose their homes if they | :08:05. | :08:07.
don't control their children's illegal drinking. It's part of a | :08:07. | :08:10.
zero-tolerance approach to tackle violence and drunkenness in the | :08:10. | :08:13.
city centre. The police and council are to a clamp-down on street | :08:13. | :08:15.
drinking and there'll be tougher enforcement of the under-age rules. | :08:15. | :08:18.
But it also includes the introduction of a late-night chill- | :08:18. | :08:27.
out hour in the city centre. Laura Bicker reports. This is the dark | :08:27. | :08:32.
side of our relationship with booze. Violence, fuelled by alcohol | :08:32. | :08:38.
blights our streets. But today, a new task force met members of | :08:38. | :08:45.
affected communities and talked tough. We're fed up. I'm fed up. | :08:45. | :08:49.
Most decent communities and citizens in Glasgow are fed up with | :08:49. | :08:56.
the abuse of alcohol that goes on. And bluntly, we're determined to | :08:56. | :09:02.
enforce some decency around this. The sharp shock tactics start with | :09:02. | :09:08.
under age drinkers. If caught, parents are warned they could lose | :09:08. | :09:12.
their tenancies F they're caught with under age drinkers, children | :09:12. | :09:17.
could be referred to the child protection unit. There was always a | :09:17. | :09:23.
way to get it. We done it when we were younger. What would have | :09:23. | :09:29.
stopped you? Nothing. Your young you will get into trouble. They can | :09:29. | :09:33.
get it from people who will buy it for them. Some adults are still | :09:33. | :09:39.
going to buy it for them. Officers say that is something they will | :09:39. | :09:43.
tackle. They will patrol buses and trains and under age drinkers will | :09:43. | :09:49.
be stopped and taken home. Here in the city between 3 and 4am in some | :09:49. | :09:56.
bars there will be a chill out thour serve hot food and drinks and | :09:56. | :10:02.
stop everyone hitting the streets at the same time. Police officers | :10:02. | :10:07.
will record problems with new cameras. If it requires sharp shock | :10:07. | :10:13.
in certain places to give people a jolt, then we can do that. This is | :10:13. | :10:17.
a real blitz on our booze culture. The police say not all the measures | :10:17. | :10:23.
will work, but they say at least it is worthwhile trying. You're | :10:23. | :10:26.
watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come before 7: | :10:26. | :10:30.
Cleaning up after the zombies - the makers of the Brad Pitt movie say | :10:30. | :10:32.
their visit to Glasgow was a success, despite one unexpected | :10:32. | :10:41.
hiccup. The sun broke through and we sat around getting a sun tan and | :10:41. | :10:49.
not working. They promised us rain and we got sunshine. In sport: It's | :10:49. | :10:52.
transfer deadline day and the deadline approaches. Who goes..who | :10:52. | :10:58.
stays? We'll tell you the latest. And drama at the US Open tennis - | :10:58. | :11:00.
these pictures from Elena Baltacha's first round match. And | :11:00. | :11:04.
we'll let you know how Andy Murray is getting on in his - he's on | :11:04. | :11:07.
court now. Edinburgh's trams will after all travel along Princes | :11:07. | :11:12.
Street into the city centre. Less than a week ago, councillors | :11:12. | :11:15.
stunned project managers by voting to stop the line at Haymarket in | :11:15. | :11:18.
the west end. The SNP group abstained in that crucial vote, but | :11:18. | :11:21.
now say they'll support to run the line to St Andrew's Square. But | :11:21. | :11:24.
that'll cost them 230 million - which they'll have to borrow. | :11:24. | :11:34.
:11:34. | :11:36. | ||
Here's Gavin Walker. Even by the standards of this project, the | :11:36. | :11:39.
development has been remarkable. Less than a week ago the council | :11:39. | :11:44.
voted on the trams project's future. The SNP group abstained and | :11:44. | :11:48.
councillors voted to end the line at Haymarket, rather than continue | :11:48. | :11:53.
to the city centre. That prompted fears for the city's and the | :11:53. | :12:03.
:12:03. | :12:08. | ||
country's reputation. Today a U- It should go through that it will | :12:08. | :12:11.
come to the city centre. It is by no means ideal because the people | :12:11. | :12:15.
of the city have not got what they were promised that they have at | :12:15. | :12:18.
least got something better than they thought they would get last | :12:18. | :12:22.
week. The decision follows the announcement by the SNP at Holyrood | :12:22. | :12:27.
that it would withhold the remaining funding unless the rich | :12:27. | :12:33.
continued to the city centre. One date later the SNP group at the | :12:33. | :12:38.
Council announced its U-turn. It is another blow for public confidence | :12:38. | :12:44.
in the project. How much confidence do you have in Edinburgh council? | :12:44. | :12:52.
None at all. That is not very generous? No, but I do not have any | :12:52. | :13:00.
confidence in them at all. 0. the council changes its decision | :13:00. | :13:05.
next Friday, some may see that as a step forward but in actual fact, it | :13:05. | :13:10.
only takes us back to where we were last week, namely, to an incomplete | :13:10. | :13:15.
project in apparent disarray with very little financial 70. Many | :13:15. | :13:19.
people expect the final bill will now, as it stands, be more than 1 | :13:19. | :13:25.
billion. A Strathclyde Police officer who | :13:25. | :13:28.
claimed she could not be bothered to arrest a suspected robber has | :13:28. | :13:34.
been freed by a judge six days into a 12 month sentence. Constable | :13:34. | :13:37.
Michelle Selby was convicted of attempting to pervert the course of | :13:37. | :13:43.
justice following the failure to arrest a man who was acting | :13:43. | :13:49.
suspiciously at a restaurant at 5:30am. She was released pending an | :13:49. | :13:52.
outcome of an appeal against a sentence. | :13:52. | :13:55.
Cocaine was 5 million has been seized from a boat which docked in | :13:55. | :13:59.
Ayrshire. The vessel is thought to have sailed across the Atlantic | :13:59. | :14:05.
from Colombia. The UK Border Agency says it is a major find. The 10 | :14:05. | :14:09.
kilograms of cocaine that has been seized is, we believe, have a | :14:09. | :14:12.
particularly high purity and when that is broken down and cut for | :14:12. | :14:18.
street deals, it could make up to about 50 kilograms, worth 5 | :14:18. | :14:22.
million. The significance of that is that we have stopped a huge | :14:22. | :14:28.
quantity of drugs from reaching the streets of Scotland and that in | :14:28. | :14:33.
itself is significant. Some of the other stories: Fire | :14:33. | :14:37.
crews are still tackling a blaze at a row of historic terraced houses | :14:37. | :14:41.
in Edinburgh. It broke out at a ground floor flat in Hazelbank | :14:41. | :14:45.
Terry's and has damaged several properties. Firefighters said the | :14:46. | :14:49.
narrow streets and historic nature of the buildings are making it | :14:49. | :14:51.
difficult to stop the fire spreading. | :14:51. | :14:56.
Figures released today reveal 28 % of college students are dropping | :14:56. | :14:59.
out of their full-time further education courses. Teaching grants | :14:59. | :15:04.
and fees for the causes add up to almost 500 million a year. The | :15:04. | :15:07.
Scottish Funding Council says the drawback figures reflect the fact | :15:07. | :15:09.
that almost a third of students come from disadvantaged | :15:09. | :15:14.
neighbourhoods. Opponents of the Aberdeen bypass | :15:14. | :15:18.
have confirmed they are pressing ahead with a further legal bid to | :15:18. | :15:22.
block construction of the road. Campaign group Roadsense will | :15:22. | :15:25.
appeal a judges' decision to throw out its claim that the public | :15:25. | :15:32.
inquiry into the bypass was unfair. An opposition petition calling for | :15:32. | :15:38.
Roadsense has the support -- calling for Roadsense to drop its | :15:38. | :15:40.
petition has the support of thousands of people. | :15:40. | :15:46.
The safety of drivers is being put at risk by thieves stealing manhole | :15:46. | :15:52.
covers from roads across the Borders. Police have condemned the | :15:52. | :15:55.
tests as reckless. For in the last few weeks, there | :15:55. | :16:00.
has been a total of 41 drain covers stolen in the Scottish Borders area. | :16:00. | :16:07.
These range from some on the A seven over to the A 68, a major | :16:07. | :16:16.
That is a significant number of firsts and it is not being done in | :16:16. | :16:20.
one go. People will be coming back to the area to steal the covers. | :16:20. | :16:25.
Our reporter is in the Borders now. This is a very serious story but | :16:25. | :16:31.
what is so attractive about manhole covers in the Borders? Put simply, | :16:31. | :16:35.
the thieves think there is a lot of money in these manhole covers. I am | :16:35. | :16:39.
here at the Scottish Borders Council headquarters and it was | :16:39. | :16:43.
stabbed here that first alerted the police to the theft of these cast | :16:43. | :16:50.
iron grating covers. As you have heard, they have been taken from | :16:50. | :16:55.
all over the Borders and they have also been taken from smaller minor | :16:55. | :17:00.
roads. You can imagine people swerving on minor roads to avoid | :17:00. | :17:04.
the holes that these deaths are leaving behind. Back here at the | :17:05. | :17:07.
council headquarters, I can show you exactly what the thieves are | :17:08. | :17:14.
taking. This is a drainage cover. Water from the road runs down into | :17:14. | :17:20.
this. It is leaving behind these big hole and you can imagine the | :17:20. | :17:27.
damage that would do to your tyre. Imagine being on a mud -- motorbike. | :17:27. | :17:33.
Even if you have a -- for the correct kit, it is still difficult | :17:33. | :17:39.
to remove a manhole cover but if they can manage it, they sell the | :17:39. | :17:47.
middle part. To buy a new drain cover is 50. A thief would get an | :17:47. | :17:52.
absolute fraction of the cost. But thinking about the cost involved, | :17:52. | :17:58.
the Scottish Borders Council are talking about 20,000 worth. That | :17:58. | :18:04.
is to repair the thefts and damage. Police are concerned about safety. | :18:04. | :18:08.
If you see somebody looking or acting suspiciously around about | :18:08. | :18:13.
these, report it to the police or the council. | :18:13. | :18:16.
David has been looking through some transfer windows. | :18:16. | :18:20.
I spent most of my days just staring out of the window but today | :18:20. | :18:24.
if it is transfer deadline day and that mean clubs that will have -- | :18:24. | :18:29.
have until 11pm to buy and sell players. The who is in and who's | :18:29. | :18:36.
out? Our senior football reporter has had his telephone glued to his | :18:36. | :18:44.
ear today. What is happening? It is the usual deadline day | :18:44. | :18:49.
madness. As usual in the past few years, it has been more speculation | :18:49. | :18:53.
and rumour that actually deals being sealed. The one that looks it | :18:53. | :18:57.
did -- looks like it is going through his Sean Maloney's move | :18:57. | :19:02.
from Celtic to Wigan. This morning he had a medical. I have spoken to | :19:02. | :19:07.
the club and they say that as our - - far as they're concerned the | :19:07. | :19:11.
medical is finished and they ate say he should sign a three-year | :19:11. | :19:15.
deal this evening. He was at Aston Villa for a short spell before | :19:15. | :19:21.
moving back to Celtic in 2008. So he's going back to the English | :19:21. | :19:25.
Premier League yet again. With other strikers at Celtic, George | :19:25. | :19:29.
Samaras and Gary Hooper attracting interest. George Samaras, I believe, | :19:29. | :19:34.
is not keen to leave, and the club is not keen to lose Gary Hooper. | :19:34. | :19:38.
Another Celtic striker, Anthony Stokes, has been having his say in | :19:38. | :19:46.
the imminent departure of Sean Maloney. I wish him the best. He is | :19:46. | :19:50.
a top professional and great player. I wish him all the best. He has | :19:50. | :19:54.
been hampered with injuries for the last while and even while I have | :19:54. | :19:59.
been here, he has struggled with injuries but if he can keep himself | :19:59. | :20:05.
fit he is a top player who will cut it at the very highest levels. | :20:05. | :20:11.
Any inns and out at Rangers? So far, no. Leicester City had a | :20:11. | :20:15.
bit of five points 6 million rejected last night for you love it. | :20:15. | :20:24.
There has been plenty speculation. -- For Jelavic sh. Rangers would be | :20:24. | :20:30.
very unhappy to lose him. They have told me that unless it is silly | :20:30. | :20:36.
money then Nicky did delegate is going absolutely nowhere. -- | :20:36. | :20:43.
Nikitta yellow fit. There are just over five hours before the transfer | :20:43. | :20:49.
window closes and anything is possible, absolutely anything. Stay | :20:49. | :20:54.

Just as Chris was talking to waive their someone answered his phone | :20:57. | :21:01.
behind him and told us Sean Maloney has in fact now signed for Wigan. | :21:01. | :21:06.
As that transfer deadline creeps ever nearer, as to Scotland's | :21:06. | :21:10.
European Championship qualifying matches against Czech Republic and | :21:10. | :21:15.
Lithuania at Hampden. Wins over both nations would give Scotland a | :21:15. | :21:19.
real chance of qualifying for a place in the play-offs. The Czech | :21:19. | :21:23.
Republic are first up on Saturday but is it win or bust for our Euro | :21:23. | :21:30.
2012 hopes? We have always said that we have to do well. I think it | :21:30. | :21:40.
:21:40. | :21:41. | ||
is important that we focus on the game and try to win the match now. | :21:41. | :21:44.
It has been a long week but Andy Murray is finally about to get his | :21:45. | :21:49.
latest shot at US Open glory. In the last few minutes he has come on | :21:49. | :21:54.
court for his first round match Feydeau's world number 64 Somdev | :21:54. | :22:00.

News of Scotland's other British number one now, Elena Baltacha is | :22:05. | :22:08.
through to the second round although there was a dramatic end | :22:08. | :22:12.
to her match. She was 5-1 up in the deciding third set against Jamie | :22:12. | :22:16.
Hampton when this happened. The unseeded American collapsed on | :22:16. | :22:21.
court. She was unable to continue and forfeited the match. Baltacha | :22:21. | :22:29.
then helped give her opponent some first aid. When she could not get | :22:29. | :22:34.
up I knew I had to run over and help that out. It is really hard. | :22:34. | :22:40.
It is hard here and I guess it just shows how important it is to always | :22:40. | :22:49.
look after what you eat and drink. Here is a complaint you do not hear | :22:49. | :22:53.
too often. The Scottish weather is too sunny and to dry. That is what | :22:53. | :22:56.
the producers of the Brad Pitt movie being filmed here have been | :22:56. | :23:00.
saying. We caught up with the team as they prepared to head back to | :23:00. | :23:03.
Holyrood. Zombies are terrorising the streets | :23:03. | :23:09.
of Glasgow, but not for much longer. At midnight tonight, George Square | :23:09. | :23:13.
will be returned to its former state when the production crew from | :23:13. | :23:17.
World War Z called It's a wrap. Filming has taken place on a closed | :23:17. | :23:24.
set but today we can catch a glimpse of how have the square has | :23:24. | :23:27.
been transformed into Philadelphia. In the last couple of weeks we have | :23:27. | :23:31.
seen expressions, car crashes and flesh-eating zombies. The film- | :23:31. | :23:35.
makers were attracted to Glasgow because of its grid structure and | :23:35. | :23:44.
architecture. They also came for the weather. We were shooting in | :23:44. | :23:48.
the shallows for continuity but then the sun came out for a couple | :23:48. | :23:52.
of days. They promised us rain and we got sunshine. It is the only | :23:52. | :23:57.

to make it happen. It is a good jaw Giselle Glasgow to other | :24:12. | :24:20.

have been coming down as film tourists. Some die Hard movie fans | :24:31. | :24:34.
hoping to see Brad Pitt have been coming to the set every day, | :24:34. | :24:39.
including, perhaps, his youngest band. We have been down here pretty | :24:40. | :24:45.
much every day, as sad as it sounds. What do you think Lucy makes of it | :24:45. | :24:52.
all? She thinks her mother should ghetto life! | :24:52. | :24:57.
Film-makers are hoping the level of interest in World War -- in World | :24:57. | :25:02.

disappointing day. Cloudy and drier and it will stay that way into this | :25:19. | :25:25.
evening. We can see the blanket of cloud that most of us have been | :25:25. | :25:30.
underneath today and that will hang around tonight as well. Perhaps one | :25:30. | :25:37.
