The Scottish Government's plans to introduce a minimum alcohol price

could be blocked by the European Union after a number of countries

complained about the legality of the plans. The objections come from

some of Europe's largest wine producers. Health secretary tonight

stood by the policy saying it saved the likes. -- saved the lives. The

Scottish Government want to tackle Scotland's booze culture. The

Scottish Whisky Association say that is against European Union law

and now they have some powerful allies. Five countries have

launched a detailed proposals. All of them a significant wine

producers. Another eight countries have made comments. The commission

say that content is controversial - - confidential but they have said

they have a problem with the compatibility of minimum pricing

plans with Community law. They have recognised problems

within the proposals and said to the Scottish Government, please

explain. So have the plans been by rate in

the vineyards of Europe? The EU Commission is looking at it

and we will have time to respond to the observations made. It is news

to me if they have ruled it out. It looks increasingly certain that

the legislation passed here only recently will not come into force

any time soon. The Government are confident of their legal position

but so too are their opponents. It will be for the European Commission

to decide and people don't agree with that it will end up in the

courts. Meanwhile the Scottish Government's decision to ban the

open display of cigarettes is also being challenged. Legal action from

Imperial Tobacco will be argued before the Supreme Court in

November. The implementation of the Scottish Government policy has been

delayed by the company's objections. One of seven British people killed

in a plane crash in Nepal has been named as Darren Kelly, from the

Isle of Whithorn, in Dumfries and Galloway. The smouldering aftermath

of the crash that claimed 19 lives. Seven Britons perished and amongst

them was Darren Kelly, a businessman from Dumfries and

Galloway. He only moved there from Lancashire five years ago but had

become a popular and respected part of village life.

A quiet and unassuming guy. He integrated with the village. If you

ask him for help or assistance with a project he was enthusiastic. At

terrible loss to the village. His older brother Vincent also died.

A lot of sport and adventure first brought him to Scotland.

took him on his last journey. Tonight, a village haunted by our

recent tragedy and once again. 12 years ago this community lost seven

lights in a fishing disaster. Now an adopted son has also died.

Different but equally tragic circumstances.

A police officer accused of assaulting a man in custody says he

is ashamed of what happened. PC Peter Cullen need William Cree in

the face at Saltcoats police station. But he claims it was in

self-defence. The accused, PC Peter Cullen, has spent much of the

morning giving evidence. He told the court he is ashamed of a

situation he allowed to get out of control and that he should have

dealt with better. He was referring to a fight in a police cell insult

courts police station last November. William Cree was in police custody

and had to be taken to hospital and treated for a head injury. The

police officer told the court that William Cree became very angry

after being arrested and that during a scuffle both men fell to

the ground. The police officers said he was terrified he was going

the face with his knee but said it was in self-defence. He denied that

we have invested �300 million in recent years. But this kind of

revenues important. A multi-million pound deal like today's's, it helps

to reinforce a reputation as a sporting city.

Who gets what as part of this deal? The people of Glasgow and Scotland

running track and five-a-side football pitches. Glasgow City

Council get �5 million from the global airline, Emirates. They, in

time, get their branding on their building for the next 10 years.
