Guilty. Security guard Clive Carter is jailed for life for the murder of

a delegate at a Glasgow conference. This was a particularly brutal, evil

and senseless attack on an innocent woman. Also tonight, blood on

mattresses and contaminated incubated and cots. The dirty

conditions found at one of the country's maternity hospitals. High

security as four men and a woman appear in court on terrorism and

conspiracy to murder charges. G -- G4S has made a bid to work at the

Commonwealth Games. And we speak to the Highland landowner about his

long-held and controversial plans to bring bears and wolves to his

estate. A man who bludgeoned a conference

delegate to death with a fire at dinner show has been found guilty of

murder and jailed for at least 20 years. -- a conference delegate.

Khanokporn Satjawat was a product manager based in Thailand for a

global drugs company. In November, she travelled to Glasgow for an

international conference on HIV. Two days later, she was dead. She was

battered to death by this man, security guard Clive Carter, a man

paid to ensure she was safe. This was a particularly brutal, evil and

senseless attack on an innocent woman. Just after lunchtime, on the

12th of November, she left the auditorium to go to the toilet.

Security guard Clive Carter was standing just outside the

auditorium. He asked to see her pass and he was quite officious about it.

A colleague of Khanokporn Satjawat told the police that after the first

day of the conference, Khanokporn Satjawat had complained to her that

she was having her pass checked continually by the same security

guard. So, stopped again, perhaps she accused him of picking on her.

His response was to arm himself with a fire extinguisher, follow her into

the toilet and hit her again and again, and again. He left her lying

on the floor in a pool of blood. The message I would give to the family

is that this was an unusual murder. An extremely rare murder. It has

never happened in my 29 years of the police service. I hope, following

the verdict, they can take some degree of comfort from the sentence.

Eight days before the murder, Carter was working at this hotel. He forced

his way into the room of a woman that was on her own. He was carrying

a fire extinguisher. The judge wondered today what would have

happened if the woman had not had the presence of mind to get out of

the room before the situation escalated. Carter was employed by

G4S. The company said today, we would like to pass on our deepest

condolences to the family of Khanokporn Satjawat. This was a

brutal and unprovoked attack and the sentenced today reflects the

severity of the crime. Khanokporn Satjawat was just six and a half

stone. Today, the judge told Clive Carter it would be up to the parole

board to decide when, if ever, he was released.

Blood on mattresses and bed rails and contaminated incubators and

cots. Cleanliness inspectors were so concerned about what they found at

Aberdeen Maternity, they went straight to the Scottish Government.

Tonight, the chief executive of NHS Grampian said unit was too old.

It should be the happiest day of any parent's life. But for those giving

birth in Aberdeen, they have been surrounded by pockets of filth,

contaminated incubators and cots man blood staining, bodily fluid and

dust, all identified by inspectors at the city's maternity Hospital.

The hospital chief executive told me they had already made changes to

working practices. At the age of the unit makes it a challenge. Why does

the age reflect cleanliness? Cleanliness is clearly the issue.

But the environment is also quite challenging to keep clean because of

its age and because it is no longer fit for purpose. I don't want to

make that too much of an excuse. In reality, irrespective of the state

of the fabric of the building, we should still be in a position where

we can keep the facility clean. New mother Rebecca Tawse is taking her

first child home. Her daughter was born on Monday, weighing eight

pounds. She is so far without a name. But Rebecca is less critical

than the inspectors. They came around if you needed your bed

changed, there was bed linen and everything underneath for the

babies. You could change it yourself if she had got dirty in the middle

of the night. I was quite happy. NHS Grampian would not let us inside the

hospital today to film the maternity unit or to see the current

condition. But they insist that procedures had been tightened up and

anyone admitted today will find that it is clean. Among the worst things

found were contamination to incubators and cots used by

patients, but staining on the underside of mattresses and body

fluids or the walls of the intensive care unit. There is absolutely no

excuse for the shortcomings identified by this report

whatsoever. No excuse whatsoever. I will be holding NHS Grampian to

account to make sure this does not happen again and they do implement

the recommendations. A new life and chapter for Rebecca. NHS Grampian

says it will look at replacing the maternity hospital completely.

Four men and a woman have appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court charged

with terrorism offences and conspiracy to murder. The five,

Martin Hughes, Edward McVey, Anton Duffy, Paul Sands and Stacy

McAllister, all from Scotland, were detained during police raids across

the country last week. On their way to court, four men and

a woman held here at high security police station for the past six

days. They were arrested in an operation apprised by police in

Scotland. A small demonstration was mounted outside the court. Police in

earlier said the operation had been focused on dissident Republicans,

who were not affiliated to any specific group. Part of the

indictment against the five alleges they attempted to try firearms and

explosives, with a blue for... View to the commission of terrorist

offences included damage to property, the murder of civilians

and a terrorist campaign. It is alleged that the conspiracy took

place on the south side of Glasgow. All five accused, aged between 26

and 39, have addresses in Scotland. All five appeared separately, in

private, and made no plea or declaration. They were remanded in

custody to appear before a sheriff next Wednesday.

inquiry into allegations of vote rigging within Labour's Falkirk

constituency to be reopened. Meanwhile, the party's Scottish

leader declined to comment when asked about accusations of

wrongdoing against Stephen Deans, the union leader at the centre of

the Grangemouth dispute. The fires of Grangemouth are still

burning. But the dispute has sparked a political row that shows no sign

of going out. Workers breathed a sigh of relief on Friday when they

learned the plant would stay open. Today, the man responsible for the

Scottish economy had strong words for union and management. There are

many matters that are deeply unsatisfactory between the union and

company at Grangemouth. Labour's finance spokesman plays the workers

that had foreseen the reopening of the plant. We have to understand the

painful sacrifices that have been made. The Tories turned their fire

on the Unite union and Labour comrades. We can't forget it was the

irresponsible actions of Unite that put the plant at risk. Nobody in the

Scottish Labour Party dared criticise their union paymasters. We

asked John Lamont to comment, but she was unavailable. Labour have

tried to put a brave face on allegations that the union leader at

the centre of the dispute tried to rig the contest to choose the next

Labour candidate in Falkirk. They say that is not a question for them,

but the party leadership in London. Stephen Deans resigned from his

Grangemouth job after the owners, INEOS, accused him of campaigning

while at work. He kept his Labour role as chairman of Falkirk West,

after a party inquiry was abandoned. A former Labour Cabinet minister

added his voice to those calling for it to be reopened. I would certainly

consider reopening the investigation. The inquiry was faced

with an investigation where there was clear evidence, by at least two

people, of concerns about what was going on inside Falkirk. That key

evidence was later withdrawn. Unite insist they have done nothing wrong,

with labour due to get on with choosing a new candidate next week.

The row about their involvement continues.

The chairman of an influential House of Commons committee has told BBC

Scotland he is astonished that the security form G4S may have some

involvement in the Commonwealth Games in vans go. The security

company was criticised for failing to provide enough staff for the

London Olympics. But the BBC has learned they have made a bid to work

at Glasgow 2014. London 2012. The army came to the

rescue after security firm G4S failed to provide enough staff at

the Olympics. The security company were heavily criticised. And we have

learned they could be involved in the Commonwealth Games next summer.

G4S already provide security here at Hamden and also at the SEC see. It

is understood those other venues that they will be interested in

providing security for four Glasgow 2014. Athletics will be a huge draw

here, with tickets already sold out during the seven days of action.

Sports taking place within the SECC precinct will also be popular with

the likes of gymnastics, boxing, judo and netball all taking place

within the vicinity. Within the last 30 minutes, G4S have confirmed they

want to be involved in the games's security. One senior MP believes it

would be up mistake. I will be writing to the chairman of the

procurement committee and sending him a copy of the report. If they

decide that things have changed so much that they should give G4S the

contract, that would be up to them. But we need to warn them so that it

is very clear what went wrong. At the end of the day, governments in

Scotland and the rest of the UK should make sure that there is a

high risk register. Those that let the people down and should not be

given the chance to let people down again. The Glasgow 2014 budget for

security increased substantially after London 2012. It went up to ?90

million. Police Scotland have taken on responsibility for the security,

and the plan is for contracts to be shared by a number of firms, rather

than just one supplier. In a statement tonight, they said:

Tonight, Glasgow 2014 say companies will be considered on their merits

and stress no appointments have been made.

We're approaching the 25th anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing

and the loss of 270. On his first full visit to Scotland, the new US

Ambassador has said there remains real anger in America that the man

convicted of the atrocity, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was released

from a Scottish prison. But he insisted the bonds of friendship

between the countries far transcended that controversy. He met

our political editor Brian Taylor. New to the job he may be, but he

knows the old wounds of Lockerbie still staying in his homeland,

especially the release of the soul conflict, al-Megrahi. I would

characterise the feelings and that the surge in which you are well

aware of as a mixture of surprise, shock and anger. Very understandable

anger that justice in the eyes of those victims was not served. Four

years ago, they cheered his return. The US ambassador says changing

circumstances provide the ability to trace others linked with the

atrocity. He says Americans also remember the kindness shown by the

people of Lockerbie. He insists the ball and far transcends this

controversy. We have roughly 400,000 American visitors coming to

Scotland. 4000 US students studying here and over 1000 businesses doing

business in Scotland. That has an incredible foundation. Do you detect

longer-term damage to relations Scotland and the US? The depth and

strength of this relationship can get us through this. He stresses

next year's referendum is entirely a matter for Scotland and the UK to

this Tuesday. Almost two thirds of the people

whose organs were donated in the past five years were not on the

donor register. A new campaign is urging people to tell their families

about their wishes. Motorcyclist Matt Polanski's organs saved the

lives of four people after he died in a racing accident two months ago.

I knew that he was on the organ donation less than we had discussed

it, so I knew he wanted to discuss his organs so the decision had

already been made. It was a wish I honoured.

Plans for an 11 wind turbine testing centre in Aberdeen Bay have received

a major set back. Councillors have refused permission for an

electricity substation for them. The developers say they're considering

their options. American businessman Donald Trump, whose golf resort is

nearby, was a critic of the scheme. A major traffic shake up is to be

piloted in Edinburgh city centre. George street is to have a one way

traffic system and a dedicated two way bike lane. On-street car parking

is being reviewed and the frequency of buses on Princes street will be

reduced. A health board is encouraging

parents to stop smoking at home or restrict it to one room. NHS Tayside

and some firefighters launched the scheme at an Arbroath primary

school. It advocates a smoke-free house which is says is healthier and

safer. We are hopeful across Tayside with

the work we are doing with our partners, the fire service and

schools, the work will get across to parents. And you can get the latest

If you go into the Highlands one day you could be in for a big surprise!

A wealthy environmentalist has pledged to push ahead with plans to

introduce bears and wolves to his Highland estate, despite a largely

critical response to his latest proposals. It's now ten years since

Paul Lister came up with the idea of creating a wilderness reserve. He's

been talking to our environment correspondent, David Miller.

It is beautiful and remote. The estate covers 23,000 acres, but this

is not a traditional Highland sporting estate. Instead of focusing

on red deer and Gross, the top is of beers and wolves. -- grouse. These

are the biggest beasts on the estate today but the owner still harbours

ambitions to release the kind of large predators which would have

been found here centuries ago. We did a feasibility study on the big

vision. To have nearly that is fenced and to bring back the beers

and wolves and two CV socio economic impact that would have and the

environmental impact. The presence of large predators really changes

the landscape. He will need more land of that dream is to become a

reality and may have to rely on the help of other landowners. They will

not be easily convinced. These large carnivores may be big enough to get

through a fence and if that were to happen it would provide

difficulties. We'll is where introduced to Yellowstone National

Park in the US in the 1990s. The move was controversial but today

they are thriving and wildlife experts say we should have nothing

to fear. Many of us go on holiday to Italy and France and Spain and they

have wolves and links and beers, and you do not feel threatened. -- lynx.

They may never again roam these hells but a debate about this is

underway. We turn our attentions to sport now

- over to Rhona. Scotland's rugby squad are having

their first get-together before the autumn internationals, but one of

their star performers is missing. Winger Tim Visser could also miss

the six nations in a few months with a broken leg. One team mate

describes his absence as a huge blow.

Kheredine Idessane reports. With the next generation close by,

Scotland's current rugby stars were being put through their places but a

key player is missing. Wenger Tim Visser will not play for Scotland

until next year and made will lose some or all of the six Nations

campaign. It is a big disappointment for her man for Edinburgh as a team.

We need these kind of players. Tim Visser Mrs matches next month as

Scotland take on Japan, South Africa and Australia, and it is a family

affair for one player with little brother in the international fold. I

am very grateful to be a part of this. Here's very good player. He

has been playing phenomenally well. There is an extra incentive for

these players to do well over the coming days and even though he does

not take over until next summer, the new head coach will be here to

observe his future charges. Let's take a bounce around some more

football match. They had a very emphatic win the weekend.

They've spent plenty of time in the gym. Tonight, Scotland's Rugby

League players start their World cup finals campaign. Their match against

Tonga in Cumbria a sell out. Obviously, we need to perform on the

field for the Scotland fans to get behind us.

Scottish athlete of the year Eilidh Child will run for GB against some

of the world's best in Glasgow in January. And she's already thinking

about the Commonwealth Games in the city later in 2014. People always

have expectations but you just keep grounded and have your own goals and

focus. All I can do is train hard and if that is enough to win, that

Tomorrow night's live League Cup quarter final game on the BBC is the

Edinburgh Derby at Easter Road. Hibs against Hearts, rivalry on the

terraces, on the pitch and in the dugout, and as Brian McLauchlin has

been finding out, also on the oche. It is a bull's-eye! It may not be

the most conventional way of preparing for the crucial Edinburgh

derby but this pair are no strangers having played together for Hearts as

youngsters. We had four years together and went our separate ways

but now facing other. I had quite a good youth team at that time. Both

players have played key roles for the respective clubs in the league

cup this year. McDonald was the Hearts hero with vital stops in a

penalty shoot out. Some of the games where they bit unfortunate but cup

games are greatly different. It is a massive game for us having lost the

Derby earlier in the season. This weekend, some of the best darts

players arrive in Edinburgh to take part in the Masters.

weather has in store? Plenty of us saw some sunshine today

but they were a number of showers around and showers tonight will fade

away and it will be HLA night. Most showers confined towards the West

and North and for most of the mainland at his dry wit clear spells

around four Celsius, my older than the West, but in the countryside it
