Thank you, Tomasz. That is all from the News | :00:00. | :00:18.
Tonight on Reporting Scotland. Heading home but for how long? Five | :00:19. | :00:28.
Celtic fans convicted of attacking Dutch police say they will appeal. | :00:29. | :00:33.
Not knowing what was going to happen to them, and left hanging for a long | :00:34. | :00:38.
time. And when they the decision came out, which was the wrong | :00:39. | :00:41.
decision, they have been left hanging again. Also tonight, could | :00:42. | :00:47.
concern over teacher's workload lead to a delay in some pupils sitting | :00:48. | :00:51.
the new Highers. She has carried the Olympic torch and she is hoping to | :00:52. | :00:56.
carry the Commonwealth baton, she tells us why more people should get | :00:57. | :01:00.
involved. Tram drivers Saturday their train for the launch of the | :01:01. | :01:04.
capital's service next spring and in sport Scotland prepares to take on | :01:05. | :01:10.
Australia at Murrayfield in their final match of the autumn series. | :01:11. | :01:18.
Five Celtic fans convicted of attacking police officers say they | :01:19. | :01:21.
are to appeal but their lawyer says it could be more than a year before | :01:22. | :01:24.
their case is heard. The five men were sentenced to prison by a Dutch | :01:25. | :01:28.
judge last night, but they have been allowed to return home pending the | :01:29. | :01:34.
appeal. It was late yesterday evening when | :01:35. | :01:35.
the Celtic supporters fate. | :01:36. | :01:44.
I'm all right. For now, these men are going home. How you feeling? | :01:45. | :01:48.
Brilliant. But it is not over yet for these | :01:49. | :01:52.
three. And the two others who have been in custody since the night of | :01:53. | :01:57.
the match. They were released from prison earlier this afternoon. | :01:58. | :02:02.
The judge sentenced five of the six Celtic supporters to terms in | :02:03. | :02:06.
prison, ranging from one to two months. He also ordered some of them | :02:07. | :02:13.
to pay fines, to compensate some of the police officers who were injured | :02:14. | :02:17.
on the night. He explained they all have two weeks to lodge an appeal so | :02:18. | :02:20.
they can go home while they decide whether to do that, or to accept the | :02:21. | :02:26.
sentences. They will appeal. I also advised | :02:27. | :02:32.
them to appeal, because I think they should be a lot more of | :02:33. | :02:35.
investigation in this case, what we have done now was not enough. The | :02:36. | :02:39.
judge more or less said the same. Two of the Celtic fannings, one seen | :02:40. | :02:44.
here in the green T-shirt, the other in the Celtic top, identified | :02:45. | :02:49.
themselves in this footage in court. Under cover police say they were | :02:50. | :02:54.
attacked by Celtic fans, the Celtic supporters say they mistook police | :02:55. | :02:59.
for hooligans, who attacked them. That will now be tested as a full | :03:00. | :03:05.
trial. Possibly a year-and-a-half away. | :03:06. | :03:10.
Frank Quinn lives near Amsterdam. He was in the square that evening. He | :03:11. | :03:15.
became a point of contact here for the men, offering hiss help and | :03:16. | :03:20.
support. -- his help and support They were treated very badly. | :03:21. | :03:25.
Treated very badly. They have been through a terrible time these guy, | :03:26. | :03:29.
it was a lot of upset as well. Not knowing what was going to happen to | :03:30. | :03:33.
them and left hanging for a long time, in the court. When the | :03:34. | :03:38.
decision came out, which was the wrong decision, they have been left | :03:39. | :03:41.
hanging again and they are very disappointed. With the whole system. | :03:42. | :03:46.
One man, John Quigley walked free last night, all of the men have left | :03:47. | :03:50.
Amsterdam for now. But for them, and their families, it | :03:51. | :03:59.
is not over yet. The Scottish governments is | :04:00. | :04:02.
signalling will allow schools to delay the introduction of revamped | :04:03. | :04:06.
Higher exam, students going into fifth year are supposed to be the | :04:07. | :04:10.
first to sit the new examinations but some teachers have been worrying | :04:11. | :04:17.
about their workload. This maths group is made up of | :04:18. | :04:21.
students from three separate school years. Some are fifth and sixth | :04:22. | :04:27.
years who will sit the current Higher next spring. Others are | :04:28. | :04:31.
fourth year, likely to sit the new Higher in about 18 months' time. | :04:32. | :04:37.
Likely, but not absolutely certain. As the local council is considering | :04:38. | :04:41.
letting schools delay the new higher for a further year. Obviously there | :04:42. | :04:47.
is a huge amount of work been done to get young people ready to sit | :04:48. | :04:50.
the. Cams. At this moment in time we want the schools to look closely at | :04:51. | :04:55.
this, because we don't want to rush towards 2015 and we are considering | :04:56. | :04:59.
2016 if it is appropriate. Highers are being revamped to take account | :05:00. | :05:03.
of the wider reforms in schools in recent years. It is about evolution | :05:04. | :05:08.
not revolution but there will be changes to what is taught on some | :05:09. | :05:13.
courses and the exams themselves. The assumption has been that the | :05:14. | :05:17.
natural option for most people doing Highers next year will be the new | :05:18. | :05:21.
Higher. That remains unchanged. Will be the natural option, but there | :05:22. | :05:25.
will be have to be flexibility in circumstances, where teachers think | :05:26. | :05:32.
that is not what they want do. It puts teachers in charge of the | :05:33. | :05:35.
decision making, rather than a remote decision being handed down. | :05:36. | :05:38.
We are pleased at the responsibility. So is there a real | :05:39. | :05:43.
risk of the introduction of the new Highers being badly disrupted? | :05:44. | :05:47.
Glasgow is to decide whether to delay them for a year and so has | :05:48. | :05:51.
Edinburgh. But several other councils have told BBC Scotland the | :05:52. | :05:54.
changes will happen on time. We have to think about what is the | :05:55. | :05:57.
right decision for the young people, what is the best route forward for | :05:58. | :06:02.
them, and if it comes down to let's hold off for a year, then that is | :06:03. | :06:08.
where we are. Whether as they study for the new | :06:09. | :06:13.
highers or the old ones they are of the same value. But if a lot of | :06:14. | :06:19.
school delay the changes it could prove embarrassing because the | :06:20. | :06:24.
target date has been known for years. The new Chief Executive of | :06:25. | :06:27.
the royal royal has promised changes to its customer service unless focus | :06:28. | :06:34.
on its own problems. Speaking at the Scottish Parliament Ross McEwan | :06:35. | :06:42.
announced a new investment in ATMs. Our business and economy editor is | :06:43. | :06:47.
here now. What has he had to say? Is the new Chief Executive of the royal | :06:48. | :06:53.
bank, he wants to bring it back to its Scottish roots. To old fashioned | :06:54. | :06:59.
values of customer service he says RBS has spent too long on its own | :07:00. | :07:03.
problems and they have not been the challenges facing customer, he wants | :07:04. | :07:07.
that to change, he brings with him a reputation of background in retail | :07:08. | :07:11.
bank, high street banking, but if you look at what is happening in the | :07:12. | :07:15.
sector it is not looking like the high streets any more, there are | :07:16. | :07:20.
seismic changes he says in the way people choose to manage their money. | :07:21. | :07:25.
They have cut the number of transsanctions in branch. They are | :07:26. | :07:29.
round breakfast time, they are going on line to check their balances, to | :07:30. | :07:33.
pay bills and so on, since it started, they have logged in to this | :07:34. | :07:39.
online services more than one billion times. Whether it is a | :07:40. | :07:43.
mobile app or self service machine in the train station, shopping mall | :07:44. | :07:47.
or a remote village Post Office, we need to start offering smarter | :07:48. | :07:51.
solutions, that make it simple and easy for people to do their banking | :07:52. | :07:56.
in new and different ways that suit them. We need to harness the new | :07:57. | :08:01.
found power of the consumer, embrace the technologies, that are enabling | :08:02. | :08:05.
it and make ourselves simple and easy to do business with. That is | :08:06. | :08:12.
not the reality in banking today. So there are changes afoot. The next | :08:13. | :08:21.
generation of automated teller, there is a heavy hint if people are | :08:22. | :08:27.
using branches less than they were, there are maybe less chance for | :08:28. | :08:35.
keeping branches. Some closures are probable. Significant cost cutting. | :08:36. | :08:40.
We will probably hear about it in February when the review should be | :08:41. | :08:42.
accomplished. Thank you very much. | :08:43. | :08:46.
You are watching Reporting Scotland. Still to come on the programme. | :08:47. | :08:51.
Stage in the sky, the play being performed in a Glasgow high rise. | :08:52. | :08:57.
In sport, is Scottish rugby entering a special period? The choeched | :08:58. | :09:03.
thinks so. Find out why, and the devil in Scott Brown is indiscipline | :09:04. | :09:07.
a problem. See what the Scotland's club manager thinks? | :09:08. | :09:11.
Organise es of the Commonwealth Games have decided to extend the | :09:12. | :09:17.
deadline to find batten bearers with many nominees still to accept a | :09:18. | :09:21.
place. Glasgow 2014 won't confirm how many people have signed up, but | :09:22. | :09:27.
they want 4,000 inspirational people to accompany the Queen's Baton when | :09:28. | :09:33.
it returns to Scotland next June. It received a royal send off at | :09:34. | :09:38.
Buckingham Palace. But as Sir Chris Hoy carried the Queen's Baton up the | :09:39. | :09:41.
mall, the crowds that turned out to see it were a little underhemming. | :09:42. | :09:46.
The baton is on a journey round the globe. It travelled across Asia and | :09:47. | :09:54.
the islands of Oceania. But oh Oceania but closer to home it has | :09:55. | :09:58.
fallen short of target. Organisers are extending the deadline for | :09:59. | :10:02.
applications We encourage as many people to get out there and be part | :10:03. | :10:07.
of this. Nominate people who inspire you, nominate the extraordinary | :10:08. | :10:11.
people and let us make sure all of our communities are involved round | :10:12. | :10:15.
this great event. First stop for the baton when it returns to Scotland | :10:16. | :10:19.
next June will be the capital city. After that, it will embark on a 40 | :10:20. | :10:23.
day tour of the country. The batten's role is to engage with the | :10:24. | :10:27.
country's and the communities of the Commonwealth, and that is why it is | :10:28. | :10:31.
so important to organisers to have local champions playing a key role | :10:32. | :10:34.
in its domestic journey. But it will be a challenge to create | :10:35. | :10:41.
the same buzz as the Olympic torch. Sally and her dog were chosen as | :10:42. | :10:46.
torch bearers she would love to carry the baton too. .20 was my slot | :10:47. | :10:52.
in the morning. It was a glorious day, there were crowds hear | :10:53. | :10:57.
cheering, it was just so magical. I had such a wonderful place to do it | :10:58. | :11:03.
in. I had the top of for my slot, I had the -- torch. I had the flame. | :11:04. | :11:08.
There is only one Commonwealth baton and it has that secret message from | :11:09. | :11:13.
the Queen inside. In the islands of the southern Pacific it is a long | :11:14. | :11:16.
way from home, but there is still time to become part of its journey | :11:17. | :11:21.
to the Games. We have been following the baton's | :11:22. | :11:26.
progress as it visits every nation and territory in the Commonwealth | :11:27. | :11:30.
before it returns to Scotland. Mark is travelling with it and he joins | :11:31. | :11:36.
us from Samoa. How much enthusiasm has there been as the baton has gone | :11:37. | :11:46.
round on its travels? The reception has been overwhelming. I mean that, | :11:47. | :11:50.
we have visited 13 countries so far, through Asia, Australia and the | :11:51. | :11:53.
South Pacific, thousands of people have had their hands on it. Let me | :11:54. | :11:58.
give you one example. I with us in Tuvalu, the small island and a | :11:59. | :12:03.
primary school head mistress with a tear in her eye explained how proud | :12:04. | :12:09.
the island is to be part of the Commonwealth and how important sport | :12:10. | :12:12.
is for development and youth. It is wonderful and that is happening | :12:13. | :12:15.
throughout the journey, it is really only just started. So Scotland on | :12:16. | :12:19.
the home leg have a lot to live up to in terms of baton bearer, | :12:20. | :12:24.
culminating in the opening ceremony. People can catch the journey we have | :12:25. | :12:28.
had so far. That will give a sense of how wonderful the excitement and | :12:29. | :12:33.
that will be on BBC Scotland at 7.30. I would encourage to see what | :12:34. | :12:39.
people make of it. Thank you very much. And we will | :12:40. | :12:43.
keep an eye on that programme tonight, at 7.30. Thanks for joining | :12:44. | :12:45.
us. There is the details. Other stories from across Scotland | :12:46. | :13:01.

the University of Stirling. It is related to a outstanding conurbation | :14:35. | :14:40.
to tennis, and charities. It is a very special day and a very special | :14:41. | :14:47.
occasion. I was born near here and the University is such a big part of | :14:48. | :14:50.
the local team unity. To have the graduation in the tennis centre was | :14:51. | :14:56.
an amazing thing. And there are more stories from your area and all of | :14:57. | :14:59.
the latest news 24 hours a day on our website. | :15:00. | :15:02.
Edinburgh's tram project may have been beset by controversy, but it's | :15:03. | :15:07.
had no difficulty attracting new recruits. Dozens of drivers have | :15:08. | :15:10.
started their training, ahead of the launch of the service next spring. | :15:11. | :15:14.
So what's the appeal of being a tram driver? Our transport correspondent, | :15:15. | :15:20.
David Miller, has been finding out. It is not yet born. -- dawn. But | :15:21. | :15:33.
there are vehicles to test and new drivers to train. | :15:34. | :15:39.
Control room staff power up the overhead lines, allowing the trams | :15:40. | :15:45.
to begin shuttling to and from the airport. Meanwhile, in the training | :15:46. | :15:55.
room, new recruits are being told what the day has in store. The trams | :15:56. | :15:59.
cost ?2 million each, so the pressure is on. For me, it is an | :16:00. | :16:07.
opportunity to travel all the way to the airport. Out of speed is a | :16:08. | :16:14.
stately 45 mph. Here I am, arriving at Edinburgh airport on board a tram | :16:15. | :16:17.
for the first time after all the years of controversy, after so much | :16:18. | :16:23.
money. It is a day which some of us thought may never come. I need you | :16:24. | :16:36.
to go to tram to 66. The drivers will earn up to ?24,000 a year. | :16:37. | :16:40.
Competition for jobs has been fierce. Bosses say that the new | :16:41. | :16:44.
staff want to draw a line under old controversies. Our team is focused | :16:45. | :16:51.
on the future. We have no impact on what has happened in the past and we | :16:52. | :16:55.
are not focused on that, we are focused on delivering great customer | :16:56. | :16:59.
service, a great ass and you experience in Edinburgh. What about | :17:00. | :17:09.
the drivers? They are raring to go. It was something I was looking | :17:10. | :17:11.
forward to do when I got offered the job. It is great. Once the public | :17:12. | :17:19.
get use to us being on the road, I think between it all it will be a | :17:20. | :17:24.
great success. A clearer picture of what went wrong with the project | :17:25. | :17:31.
will not come until the long-awaited public enquiry. The focus for now is | :17:32. | :17:35.
on the future. That looks good fun. Now for the | :17:36. | :17:39.
sport. Good evening. Is the national team | :17:40. | :17:47.
in rugby at the start of a golden era? The head coach think so. | :17:48. | :17:51.
Tomorrow, they face Australia at Murrayfield. A win for the Scots | :17:52. | :17:58.
would have extra significance. It was all about the final training | :17:59. | :18:00.
session for Scotland today. More time to fix the things that went so | :18:01. | :18:05.
badly wrong last time out. There is a train of thought that suggests | :18:06. | :18:08.
that Australia's visit here is good for Scotland. Discipline issues | :18:09. | :18:13.
aside, the Wallabies have lost more games than they have one this year. | :18:14. | :18:18.
There is of course this, Scotland or on a hat-trick against them. Chris | :18:19. | :18:27.
Allison! He has nailed it! When we are at our best, we do our roles | :18:28. | :18:37.
well. Despite beating Ireland, it has been a difficult week for | :18:38. | :18:39.
Australia after banning six players for drinking. Win you are against a | :18:40. | :18:47.
side that is beating you to out of the last three times, it is | :18:48. | :18:50.
intimidating. A feud rings afterwards? I dare not! -- a few | :18:51. | :19:02.
drinks. We are told it is the start of a vintage period. Markets down, | :19:03. | :19:05.
this period will be. There are names here that will give Scotland its | :19:06. | :19:11.
greatest chance to have long-term successful stop but the marker | :19:12. | :19:18.
down, I will sign it. Time to back-up the words with results. | :19:19. | :19:26.
No action will be taken against Celtic's Chief Executive Peter | :19:27. | :19:28.
Lawwell for comity made about Rangers. But the Scottish FA's | :19:29. | :19:33.
president says he's saddened at wht he says is the "apparent erosion of | :19:34. | :19:36.
mutual respect" between the clubs. Campbell Ogilvie says Lawwell's | :19:37. | :19:38.
comment and the complaint by Rangers, are "wholly unnecessary". | :19:39. | :19:41.
Lawwell told Celtic's AGM "Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony | :19:42. | :19:44.
Blair" when asked if Rangers were an old or new club. | :19:45. | :19:48.
The Celtic manager says his club and Scotland captain Scott Brown doesn't | :19:49. | :19:51.
have a problem with indiscipline. That's despite appearing to kick out | :19:52. | :19:54.
at a Norway player during Tuesday's international. Last month, Brown was | :19:55. | :19:58.
banned for three Champions League matches for kicking an opponent in a | :19:59. | :20:11.
match against Barcelona. As long as he does it within the rules of the | :20:12. | :20:15.
game, it is part of his make up, that is what makes in such a good | :20:16. | :20:19.
player. He is a fantastic player. Absolutely fantastic. He is playing | :20:20. | :20:25.
the best football of the season this year. We have missed in our games. | :20:26. | :20:31.
Now a look at what else is happening across Scottish sport. | :20:32. | :20:39.
Hands up if you will be in the dugout at Saint Mirren tomorrow. | :20:40. | :20:43.
Terry Butcher is appealing a one match ban to be allowed in for the | :20:44. | :20:51.
first time after all. You want to see them play with a lot | :20:52. | :20:58.
of passion and pride now. With him coming in, there will be a knee jerk | :20:59. | :21:05.
reaction from the players at Hibs. We hope they will impress. You can | :21:06. | :21:22.
see the Scot scoring here if it were not for that caddie! | :21:23. | :21:27.
A win over Denmark will take the Scots into the play-offs. | :21:28. | :21:32.
Scotland full-back is act in action four bars go -- for Glasgow Warriors | :21:33. | :21:44.
tonight. Ciaran Mary Lee lost his last match | :21:45. | :21:50.
to a player from Malaysia. There are more stories available 24 | :21:51. | :21:57.
hours a day on BBC sport Scotland's website. | :21:58. | :22:05.
On that note, it is all from me. Thank you. | :22:06. | :22:08.
Plays can be performed in a range of venues from a traditional theatre to | :22:09. | :22:12.
a park. But how about a block of flats? Well, that's where a group of | :22:13. | :22:15.
residents and refugees are staging a play about their lives in a high | :22:16. | :22:19.
rise block in the Gorbals in Glasgow. Julie Peacock reports. | :22:20. | :22:24.
For the people who pass it every day, this is just another high-rise | :22:25. | :22:28.
waiting to be knocked down. This blog, which has been home to | :22:29. | :22:32.
thousands since the 70s, is about to become a theatre venue. I won't | :22:33. | :22:38.
cause you any bother. Asylum seekers and other residents have got | :22:39. | :22:44.
together to perform a play about their life in this high-rise block | :22:45. | :22:47.
of flats. They mean a lot to me because I came from trouble, they | :22:48. | :22:53.
hosted me. I thought it is really great. I thought Glasgow was a | :22:54. | :23:00.
wonderful city. For those taking part, it has been a chance to learn | :23:01. | :23:03.
more about the neighbours. Scotland is changing. Refugees have been | :23:04. | :23:10.
coming here for a long time now. There is a lot of negativity towards | :23:11. | :23:14.
it. People don't understand it and it is about education, that there is | :23:15. | :23:22.
diversity in the city. For each scene, the audience will be taken on | :23:23. | :23:26.
a tour of this tower block. One scene takes place right in one of | :23:27. | :23:34.
the lifts. A lot has happened in the 40 years | :23:35. | :23:42.
since these flats were built. The organisers want to reflect how much | :23:43. | :23:46.
has happened in that time. We want to cover what these rulings mean to | :23:47. | :23:51.
people and the immunity is that surround them and also to give | :23:52. | :23:57.
people who will see this show the chance to see what they look like | :23:58. | :24:00.
inside and to step into the shoes of the people who live here. It is | :24:01. | :24:04.
hoped the play will leave a lasting memory for local people before the | :24:05. | :24:10.
flats are demolished next year. It was a gorgeous, crisp day today. | :24:11. | :24:20.
How was it looking? Good evening. Many of us saw the sunshine today | :24:21. | :24:23.
but it was not widely available, certainly across the northern parts | :24:24. | :24:29.
it was cloudy. The cloud continues in the north. It acts of it like a | :24:30. | :24:35.
blanket, so not quite as cold as areas further south where | :24:36. | :24:40.
temperatures will be widely subzero. To do is get down to -2 -3. On the | :24:41. | :24:47.
borders, down to -4. There will be a bit of a breeze and it will be | :24:48. | :24:52.
milder in the North. It is a dry start and cloudy start or stop it | :24:53. | :24:57.
will be settled but pretty great. That cloud will thin and break at | :24:58. | :25:03.
times, but we will see bright and sunny spells occasionally. For most | :25:04. | :25:06.
of us, it is a fairly cloudy and dry day. Temperatures, 5-7 Celsius with | :25:07. | :25:12.
light winds. That cloud will be thicker across the Highlands and | :25:13. | :25:16.
Hebrides, giving light spots of rain and drizzle. The same towards Orkney | :25:17. | :25:21.
and Shetland. On occasion, you will see some brightness coming through. | :25:22. | :25:25.
If you are hill walking or climbing tomorrow, it is generally dry away | :25:26. | :25:28.
from the north-west, where we will see one or two spots of drizzle. | :25:29. | :25:32.
Come further south and you will see some brighter skies, with winds from | :25:33. | :25:39.
the north-west and temperatures there around freezing. So cloudy | :25:40. | :25:44.
skies but brighter skies towards Angus and the border hills. If | :25:45. | :25:49.
you're on the inshore waters, it is a North to North we still eat, force | :25:50. | :26:04.
two, force three. It is a 43, force four elsewhere. It is largely dry | :26:05. | :26:11.
and cloudy. That cloud will thin and break and there will be some mist | :26:12. | :26:14.
and fog and frosty patches developing. Through the weekend, | :26:15. | :26:17.
toward Sunday, high-pressure stays in charge. It is largely a repeat, | :26:18. | :26:25.
dry but cloudy. One to coastal showers around. Better for Orkney | :26:26. | :26:32.
and Shetland. Consequently cooler. Monday once again, fairly dry and | :26:33. | :26:35.
cloudy. One to coastal showers will stop temperatures 5-7. By Tuesday, a | :26:36. | :26:42.
change rain is working into the north-west as transferring south and | :26:43. | :26:46.
east. It will be milder and breezy. The night, cold for some and frosty. | :26:47. | :26:50.
That is the forecast. Thank you. | :26:51. | :26:53.
Now, a reminder of tonight's main news. Five Celtic fans convicted of | :26:54. | :26:55.
attacking police officers in Amsterdam, before a Champions League | :26:56. | :26:58.
game with Ajax, say they're to appeal. The five men were sentenced | :26:59. | :27:05.
to prison by a Dutch judge last night but they've been allowed to | :27:06. | :27:08.
return home pending the appeal. It's been revealed the couple | :27:09. | :27:10.
arrested in South London on suspicion of keeping three women as | :27:11. | :27:14.
slaves for 30 years were arrested in the 1970s. 37 officers have so far | :27:15. | :27:20.
seized 2,500 pieces of evidence. The Scottish government | :27:21. | :27:24.
The disgraced former chairman of the Co-Operative Bank, Paul Flowers, has | :27:25. | :27:29.
been arrested as part of an investigation into the supply of | :27:30. | :27:31.
illegal drugs. And that's Reporting Scotland. I'll | :27:32. | :27:34.
be back with the headlines at 8pm and the late bulletin just after the | :27:35. | :27:38.
ten O'Clock news. Until then, from everyone on the team here in Glasgow | :27:39. | :27:42.
and around the country, have a very good evening. Goodbye. | :27:43. | :27:46. |
