shaking your head. That is horrible. That is all from the | :00:00. | :00:20.
Tonight, freedom of movement between England and Scotland. UK ministers | :00:21. | :00:26.
say that border controls might be necessary if there is independence. | :00:27. | :00:29.
The Scottish government says that is nonsense. | :00:30. | :00:33.
The Scottish -based energy company, SSE, says it expects to make ?1.5 | :00:34. | :00:38.
billion profit months after announcing a price increase for | :00:39. | :00:46.
consumers. He took part in the handover of the | :00:47. | :00:51.
Delhi Commonwealth Games and now he is joining in the search for | :00:52. | :00:57.
volunteers for Glasgow's Games Makers. Can't imagine what it would | :00:58. | :01:03.
be like in Glasgow. Later in the programme, he was once the bad boy | :01:04. | :01:07.
of Scottish football now Barry Ferguson is in the headlines for | :01:08. | :01:09.
different reasons, taking the helm at Blackpool. | :01:10. | :01:15.
Good evening. The UK government says an independent Scotland would have | :01:16. | :01:19.
to choose between free movement across the border and having a free | :01:20. | :01:22.
hand to set its own immigration policy. Otherwise, according to | :01:23. | :01:26.
Alistair Carmichael, the might have to be border checks. The Scottish | :01:27. | :01:30.
government says the open border between Ireland and the UK's shows | :01:31. | :01:34.
that that is nonsense. Glen Campbell reports. | :01:35. | :01:42.
There are no border checks between Scotland and England. On the A1 and | :01:43. | :01:46.
20 other cross-border roads, traffic flows freely. So what do the | :01:47. | :01:52.
regulars here think would happen if Scotland becomes independent? There | :01:53. | :01:56.
is nothing they can do if the changes. It is going to be the same | :01:57. | :02:04.
road and the same crossing. It will be still the same view. If Scotland | :02:05. | :02:10.
was independent, I reckon we would have to pay a toll. Neither the yes | :02:11. | :02:18.
or no side in visit tolls. The Scottish government says that there | :02:19. | :02:23.
would be no need for border checks after independence. -- in visions | :02:24. | :02:32.
tolls. They want Scotland to stay in the Common travel area with the rest | :02:33. | :02:36.
of the UK and Ireland, which is already an independent country with | :02:37. | :02:39.
its own immigration policy. The Scottish government wants its own | :02:40. | :02:42.
policy which relaxed immigration rules to encourage more people not | :02:43. | :02:46.
only to visit Scotland but to come and live and work here. We can have | :02:47. | :02:52.
an open border with the rest of the United Kingdom, but at the same | :02:53. | :02:58.
time, they want an immigration policy that is widely divergent from | :02:59. | :03:02.
that of the rest of the United Kingdom. You can have one of these | :03:03. | :03:07.
things but not both. The Scottish government thinks that | :03:08. | :03:11.
is a false choice. Alistair Carmichael is talking utter | :03:12. | :03:14.
nonsense. He must think that people in Scotland but an upper back. There | :03:15. | :03:19.
will be no border controls between an independent Scotland and the rest | :03:20. | :03:23.
of the UK. How do we know that? Because there are no border controls | :03:24. | :03:28.
between the UK and independent Ireland. It is true there are no | :03:29. | :03:31.
border checks between Robben Island and the Republic but the UK | :03:32. | :03:35.
government says that that is only possible because Irish immigration | :03:36. | :03:37.
rules are similar to those of the UK. -- Northern Ireland. The first | :03:38. | :03:43.
minister has come under fire for staying at an upmarket hotel used by | :03:44. | :03:47.
Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Brad Pitt during a trip to Chicago. | :03:48. | :03:51.
At question time, Johann Lamont claimed that Alex Salmond failed to | :03:52. | :03:58.
count for a ?54,000 bill for a visit to the Ryder Cup two years ago. Alex | :03:59. | :04:03.
Salmond dismissed the complaint as frippery. | :04:04. | :04:16.
The energy supplier, SSE, headquartered in Perth, says it | :04:17. | :04:19.
expects to make more than ?1.5 billion in profit this year, two | :04:20. | :04:22.
months after an increase in domestic energy bills. David Henderson is | :04:23. | :04:30.
here. Quite a profit. It is a hefty profit. Of course, SSE is not just | :04:31. | :04:36.
big, it is a huge company. It is the UK's second largest energy supplier | :04:37. | :04:39.
with something like 9 million customers in Scotland, England and | :04:40. | :04:44.
Wales. But the scale of that profit is a surprise for some because SSE | :04:45. | :04:49.
actually lost a quarter of a million customers last year. You would've | :04:50. | :04:52.
thought that that would not be for business but the bottom line | :04:53. | :04:57.
suggests that it is coping fine. Today, it said that it is on course | :04:58. | :05:01.
to increase profits by over 1 billion pounds over the coming year. | :05:02. | :05:07.
That will mean increased pay-outs to shareholders, the people who own the | :05:08. | :05:11.
company but the timing has angered some because it is just a couple of | :05:12. | :05:15.
months since November when the company announced it was going to | :05:16. | :05:18.
increase its charges for customers by an average of more than 8%. At | :05:19. | :05:24.
the time, it put that down to rising network costs, rising wholesale | :05:25. | :05:30.
energy prices, as well as government green levies. And what has been the | :05:31. | :05:35.
response? Yet again, it has stirred up a hornets nest. A long-running | :05:36. | :05:42.
row about energy prices. The Labour Party has weighed in, accusing the | :05:43. | :05:47.
company of increasing profits and shareholder pay-outs on the back of | :05:48. | :05:52.
spiralling bills for consumers. There is good news. The company has | :05:53. | :05:56.
today said they plan to cap energy prices for about one year from | :05:57. | :06:01.
March. That is a commitment that its rivals have not yet made, but in | :06:02. | :06:06.
response to that, the watchdog says that the company should bring that | :06:07. | :06:12.
forward, to ease pressure on households. | :06:13. | :06:18.
You're watching Reporting Scotland. Still to come... Vintage Duff as | :06:19. | :06:25.
Paisley hosts the start of the Monte Carlo Classic rally. And in sport, | :06:26. | :06:32.
poacher turned gamekeeper, former Rangers captain, Barry Ferguson, | :06:33. | :06:35.
moves into mansion and -- Management. And Adam Rooney is | :06:36. | :06:44.
signed for the dons. Organisers of this year's | :06:45. | :06:47.
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow want to recruit cast members for the | :06:48. | :06:51.
opening and closing ceremonies. This is what it looked like last time in | :06:52. | :06:54.
Delhi. 3000 people are needed to help stage the two showcase events. | :06:55. | :06:59.
It comes as the organising team marks six months to go. | :07:00. | :07:07.
It is another landmark moment in a momentous year for Scotland. And to | :07:08. | :07:10.
mark this stage of the countdown, organisers have launched a search. | :07:11. | :07:16.
3000 cast members are needed for the opening and closing ceremonies, with | :07:17. | :07:21.
no experience necessary. We are looking for extraordinary people who | :07:22. | :07:27.
want to be part of the magic and wants to inspire and excite people. | :07:28. | :07:37.
Two Pipers formed part of the smaller cast for the handover | :07:38. | :07:42.
ceremony in Delhi four years ago. They are already booked in for this | :07:43. | :07:45.
year and say that that experience was incredible. When we did it in | :07:46. | :07:51.
Delhi, it was an amazing buzz. I cannot imagine how it would be here | :07:52. | :07:57.
in Glasgow with a home crowd. With six months to go, these are the | :07:58. | :08:00.
final preparations for Glasgow, you can sure the city is ready. As well | :08:01. | :08:04.
as getting the people in place, focus is now turning to making sure | :08:05. | :08:15.
that the venues are ready as well. The armadillo took centre stage as | :08:16. | :08:19.
performers in Delhi recreated some of Scotland's's landmarks. And with | :08:20. | :08:24.
these ceremonies watched by 1 billion people, it is a chance for | :08:25. | :08:32.
volunteers to be a part of history. Although the Commonwealth Games come | :08:33. | :08:34.
to Scotland this year, the Queen's baton really is visiting every | :08:35. | :08:41.
Commonwealth nation. -- baton relay. Mark moment has been on that | :08:42. | :08:52.
journey. -- Mark Beaumont. Despite not being at the | :08:53. | :08:55.
Commonwealth Games, cricket is played in many Commonwealth | :08:56. | :09:00.
countries. But it is the recent introduction of women's cricket that | :09:01. | :09:04.
is having a profound impact in Tanzania. Why did you get involved | :09:05. | :09:13.
in cricket? TRANSLATION: Cricket has helped to travel around the world. I | :09:14. | :09:19.
have met a lot of people and through that interaction, this has helped me | :09:20. | :09:25.
to broaden my mind. What has being involved in sport done in terms of | :09:26. | :09:34.
your family life and community? She says she cannot imagine her life | :09:35. | :09:38.
without this game. Without that, she would probably be somewhere on the | :09:39. | :09:41.
streets. Trying to earn a livelihood. Everything she has in | :09:42. | :09:50.
this life is thanks to the game. And that is putting her through. The | :09:51. | :09:55.
programme was set up to improve the sport but organisers soon realised | :09:56. | :09:58.
that teenage girls needed more help than just cricket training. Girls | :09:59. | :10:06.
need an education. We ensure that the girls get scholarships. When | :10:07. | :10:11.
they struggle in life, we make sure that they get help and employment. | :10:12. | :10:20.
We assist in that. It is not just a community programme. The sport is | :10:21. | :10:25.
taken very seriously. This does not feel like the safest place to stand. | :10:26. | :10:30.
Those balls are coming pretty fast. I have played cricket once or twice | :10:31. | :10:35.
in my life, maybe 15 years ago. I am quite keen to have a go and see if I | :10:36. | :10:40.
can't actually had one. -- actually had one. Good ball. Well done. Well | :10:41. | :10:54.
done. Being an absolute beginner cricket, I never on Madge and it is | :10:55. | :10:59.
to be an adrenaline sport. Trust me, when you are standing there, that is | :11:00. | :11:03.
exciting. Children in over 150 schools across Tanzania are now | :11:04. | :11:08.
enjoying that same adrenaline rush. But just as importantly, cricket is | :11:09. | :11:17.
helping to shape their lives. A man is in a Glasgow hospital after | :11:18. | :11:21.
he was shot in the East End of the city. It happened at lunchtime as a | :11:22. | :11:24.
group of building workers were in tenement in Parkhead. Armed police | :11:25. | :11:29.
were sent there shortly after one o'clock. It is understood that a man | :11:30. | :11:34.
was shot in close range in the shoulder in what was described as a | :11:35. | :11:38.
targeted attack. Voters are going to the polls in Cowdenbeath to choose a | :11:39. | :11:41.
new member of the Scottish Parliament. | :11:42. | :11:46.
The by-election was prompted by the death of Helen Eadie, the sitting | :11:47. | :11:52.
MEP. But seven candidates and all our details are on the news website. | :11:53. | :11:57.
-- there are seven candidates. And a special Newsnight Scotland will | :11:58. | :12:01.
follow the events in Cowdenbeath until the final count and beyond, at | :12:02. | :12:06.
11pm on BBC Two. The earliest use of steel in Britain | :12:07. | :12:12.
has been discovered in East Lothian. Analysis of iron flakes dating from | :12:13. | :12:18.
2500 years ago as revealed evidence of a complex manufacturing process. | :12:19. | :12:23.
-- has revealed. It might not look like much. It is not even known what | :12:24. | :12:29.
it is, but it is being billed as a significant find, changing the way | :12:30. | :12:32.
we think about our Scottish ancestors. It was discovered at the | :12:33. | :12:38.
sight of an ancient hillfort in East Lothian. Excavated in the 70s, it is | :12:39. | :12:43.
only now that the importance of the find is becoming clear. This is an | :12:44. | :12:48.
object so precious that I not allowed to touch it. Ironworking | :12:49. | :12:54.
evolved gradually at the time. This is a high-quality piece, the | :12:55. | :12:58.
earliest piece of steel in all of Britain. To find it in such a | :12:59. | :13:02.
northerly location goes against a lot of the preconceived ideas that | :13:03. | :13:06.
people had about the Iron Age. This site has long since been covered up | :13:07. | :13:11.
but there were hundreds of Iron Age forts scattered all over southern | :13:12. | :13:14.
Scotland. Like this one here near Haddington. But this research has | :13:15. | :13:21.
revealed that people that lived here more than 2500 years ago were more | :13:22. | :13:25.
sophisticated than previously thought. The piece of steel was one | :13:26. | :13:30.
of thousands of artefacts discovered. It has taken experts | :13:31. | :13:34.
five years to analyse it all. What you see here are three stone balls | :13:35. | :13:43.
and eight polished piece of bone. It is gaming pieces. The population | :13:44. | :13:46.
must have spent some of the time in organised games. And that reflects | :13:47. | :13:54.
their status in society. These are people who are not driven by the | :13:55. | :13:58.
bare necessities of life. These people have leisure time. Experts | :13:59. | :14:03.
say it is unlikely that there will ever be another hole like blocks | :14:04. | :14:07.
mouth. Some of the artefacts on display at the National Museum. -- | :14:08. | :14:18.
haul. Thousands are in Paisley this | :14:19. | :14:20.
evening to watch the start of the Monte Carlo Classic rally. The | :14:21. | :14:24.
Renfrewshire town is one of only five European start points. 70 | :14:25. | :14:29.
vintage cars have been flagged off within the last hour. Our reporter | :14:30. | :14:33.
is there. What is the atmosphere like? Loud and full of petrol. | :14:34. | :14:43.
Paisley Abbey has become a place of worship with a difference because | :14:44. | :14:45.
thousands of car enthusiasts have come down to see these vintage | :14:46. | :14:49.
vehicles. The cars are being flagged off at one-minute intervals, joining | :14:50. | :14:53.
competitors from all four European cities for the 1700 mile journey to | :14:54. | :15:02.
Monaco. Spare a thought, for the drivers, because these cars do not | :15:03. | :15:05.
have heated seats and expensive sound systems. It will be cramped, | :15:06. | :15:09.
cold and bumpy. The racers are being flagged off by Paddy Kirk, the | :15:10. | :15:14.
legendary racer who won the rally in 19 city for. But this year, it is | :15:15. | :15:20.
all about the experience. We know what we are in for. We have done it | :15:21. | :15:24.
before. There are unexpected factors. There will be a lot of snow | :15:25. | :15:29.
and ice, and a lot of other competitors. Every knock, every | :15:30. | :15:34.
rattle, you are sitting there all the way down to Dover saying, are | :15:35. | :15:41.
you sure it is not breaking? But once you get to France, that is it. | :15:42. | :15:46.
It is one of the last great adventures. We always have such a | :15:47. | :15:50.
magnificent sendoff. This is the third year that we have started from | :15:51. | :15:53.
here and every year I am amazed by how many turnout. It sounds like | :15:54. | :15:57.
great fun. Where do they go from here? | :15:58. | :16:02.
They have a couple of checkpoints to knit. They have to go through | :16:03. | :16:03.
Kilmarnock and then down to Dumfries Kilmarnock and then down to Dumfries | :16:04. | :16:08.
Galloway. And then it is a long drive through England to Dover and | :16:09. | :16:11.
across the Channel. From there, they head through the wintry alps for | :16:12. | :16:16.
hopefully making it to a warmer French Riviera and Monaco. | :16:17. | :16:19.
Notwithstanding breakdowns and weather conditions, they are hoping | :16:20. | :16:22.
that they will make it their by Tuesday. At the very latest. Other | :16:23. | :16:32.

all the latest news, 24 hours a day. Let's get all the latest from David. | :18:23. | :18:28.
Good evening. He has captained Rangers and Scotland but now Barry | :18:29. | :18:31.
Ferguson has taken his first steps into football management. His | :18:32. | :18:36.
international career ended under a cloud, but he has taken temporary | :18:37. | :18:40.
charge of the English championship club, Blackpool, after they sacked | :18:41. | :18:45.
Paul Ince. Ferguson says he is excited about the job but will not | :18:46. | :18:48.
be drawn on whether it will become permanent. | :18:49. | :18:56.
He certainly has experience of lifting trophies from his playing | :18:57. | :18:59.
career. But now Barry Ferguson has the task of lifting Blackpool in his | :19:00. | :19:05.
first taste of football management. I am excited and nervous. This is | :19:06. | :19:11.
the first opportunity I've had to do this. I've been doing coaches for -- | :19:12. | :19:16.
coaching badges for the last few years and I am looking to get into | :19:17. | :19:19.
this when I've finished playing. Whether that happens now while | :19:20. | :19:23.
later, or a couple of years down the line, I do not know. Ten days away | :19:24. | :19:29.
from his 36th day, he gets his chance in management. After a | :19:30. | :19:32.
glittering playing career with the odd blip, in particular when his | :19:33. | :19:39.
Scotland involvement came to an end because of field events. But one | :19:40. | :19:42.
former team-mate says he has learned from that. Will do well. He has lots | :19:43. | :19:47.
of experience and he has played at the highest level. It is a great | :19:48. | :19:56.
opportunity. With Blackpool 14th in the English championship, the local | :19:57. | :19:58.
media are keen to hear how he will improve things following the sacking | :19:59. | :20:12.
of Paul Ince. We are nine points off the play-off. | :20:13. | :20:15.
PROBLEM WITH SOUND PROBLEM WITH | :20:16. | :20:15.
SOUND. Has worked under some of the best | :20:16. | :20:19.
managers in the Scottish game. Now it is down to him to point the way | :20:20. | :20:22.
forward at Blackpool. Aberdeen have a new striker, pipping | :20:23. | :20:27.
Hibs to sign him. He is Dan Roan. He has signed a two-and-a-half year | :20:28. | :20:32.
deal. The Irishman who left Oldbury-on-Severn was prolific in a | :20:33. | :20:37.
previous spell in Scottish football, scoring #r50 goals in three seasons | :20:38. | :20:42.
in Inverness. We are looking forward to working | :20:43. | :20:48.
with him. He has proven himself in Inverness, but it is important to | :20:49. | :20:53.
prove himself again. #7 I think of some of the years I have had, the | :20:54. | :21:00.
play that has come on in the last number of years. Hopefully that play | :21:01. | :21:04.
will keep on developing. In Inverness, I got a lot of goals. | :21:05. | :21:10.
Now for a look at what else is happening across Scottish sport. | :21:11. | :21:23.
St Johnston have scored Chris Ulummo. | :21:24. | :21:29.
And Stenhousemuir's John gemel has been charged for offensive tweets | :21:30. | :21:34.
against Ally McCoist. No ill feeling after the game, however. | :21:35. | :21:37.
And it is said that representing the rest of the world against North | :21:38. | :21:44.
America and Las Vegas last week was the best preparation for the Winter | :21:45. | :21:51.
Olympics in rush, says Eve Muirhead. All of these things are little | :21:52. | :21:56.
inches to help us perform well in Sochi. | :21:57. | :21:58.
And Scotland's cricketers have made it to the World Cup Fallifying | :21:59. | :22:10.
Match. Scots golfers, Paul Lawrie and | :22:11. | :22:17.
Stephen gal ak her, are six shots behind the Spanish golfer. Both | :22:18. | :22:28.
Scots are 7-under par. And Dennis Orcollo has been beaten by two sets | :22:29. | :22:36.
to nil. That was by Paul Foster. | :22:37. | :22:41.
There are more sports stories, plus the latest news on the sports | :22:42. | :22:52.
website for BBC/Scotland. Well it is one of the most | :22:53. | :22:57.
challenging environments in the UK. And also the most challenging | :22:58. | :23:01.
season. The Cairngorms has been home to the BBC's Winterwatch programme. | :23:02. | :23:07.
The series ends tonight. Winter in the Cairngorms. The | :23:08. | :23:12.
wildlife here has hunkered down, but technology allows us to see the | :23:13. | :23:17.
struggle for survival in this remote and drake landscape. The programme | :23:18. | :23:21.
chief is running through the fine show. | :23:22. | :23:25.
The Cairngorms is the greatest wilderness in the whole of the | :23:26. | :23:28.
United Kingdom. It is where the wild things are. This lodge sits in the | :23:29. | :23:33.
middle of it. This is the most perfect place for us to see how our | :23:34. | :23:37.
wildlife deals with the toughest time of the year. | :23:38. | :23:43.
This is the estate owned by the National Trust of Scotland and home | :23:44. | :23:49.
for the Winterwatch team. It is home to some magnificent animals, red | :23:50. | :23:54.
squirrels, otters and golden eagles. The presenters have their | :23:55. | :23:58.
favourites. The A-listers have been the black | :23:59. | :24:04.
grouse. They are attractive, flamboyant birds, they are going at | :24:05. | :24:10.
it hammer and tongs in the snow, against the backdrop of this. It | :24:11. | :24:15.
does not get better. Golden eagles. That is a sexy A-Lister. The otters, | :24:16. | :24:21.
the parm began. The red deer. That is the beauty of being in a place | :24:22. | :24:28.
like this. There are iconic A-Lister species. | :24:29. | :24:31.
This is a live feed from around the estate. A common buzzard has come to | :24:32. | :24:38.
snaffle up these left overs from the otters. | :24:39. | :24:43.
More golden eagle action in store tonight, to round off the showcase | :24:44. | :24:50.
of the Cairngorms A-Lister wildlife. So, how is the weather shaping up | :24:51. | :24:57.
for us tonight? Pretty chilly, Sally. Thank you very much. Good | :24:58. | :25:01.
evening to you. After lovely sunny skies for many, tonight we pay the | :25:02. | :25:06.
price. It will be cold, frosty and icy. A Met Office yellow warning is | :25:07. | :25:12.
in force until 9.00am. It is down the spine of the country, draw a | :25:13. | :25:18.
line in your mind from Wick, towards Dumfries. That is where the biggest | :25:19. | :25:23.
ice risk is. About but there could be icy patches almost anywhere. | :25:24. | :25:29.
Cloudy in the west, and wetter. Tomorrow will be a wet and a windy | :25:30. | :25:34.
day. The rain is heading across the west coast. Tomorrow morning it | :25:35. | :25:38.
continues to work to the east. Not so heavy but cloudy and damp. At | :25:39. | :25:44.
times it is turning to snow over the high ground and the hills. Also a | :25:45. | :25:49.
strengthening southerly wind. To the north of high ground it could be | :25:50. | :25:52.
drier for you. Milder tomorrow, compared to today, but given the | :25:53. | :25:56.
rain and the cloud, it will not feel so good. The sheltered effects there | :25:57. | :26:06.
are across Murray and wet across the highlands and the Hebrides and the | :26:07. | :26:11.
Northern Isles. Into the afternoon, the rain pepping up for a time. Then | :26:12. | :26:16.
the attention is on the Shetlands. For you the winds are ramping up at | :26:17. | :26:23.
70 to 80 mile an hour gusts. Saturday, the weekend, well, it is | :26:24. | :26:27.
fairly showery day. Blustery showers. Brighter skies here and | :26:28. | :26:32.
there. Over the hills and the high ground the showers are falling as | :26:33. | :26:38.
snow. Sunday, it is not so good. A deep area of low pressure coming our | :26:39. | :26:43.
way from the Atlantic it means wet and windy weather. A dry start to | :26:44. | :26:47.
begin with but then the rain sweeps in over the hills and the heiling | :26:48. | :26:55.
ground -- high ground, for many it will be rain, accompanied by a | :26:56. | :27:00.
strong to gale-force wind. Now a reminder of the main news: The | :27:01. | :27:07.
UK Government says an independent Scotland would have to choose | :27:08. | :27:11.
between free movement across the border and have a hand in setting | :27:12. | :27:18.
its own immigration policy, but the Scottish Government says that the | :27:19. | :27:20.
open border between Ireland and the UK shows that is nonsense. | :27:21. | :27:24.
Organisers of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow want to recruit cast | :27:25. | :27:29.
members for the opening and the closing ceremonies. 3,000 people are | :27:30. | :27:33.
needed to help to stage the two show-case events there. It comes as | :27:34. | :27:37.
the organising team mark six months to go. | :27:38. | :27:41.
A day after the latest figures showed unmroim coming down faster | :27:42. | :27:45.
than many expected, David Cameron says he is determined that the | :27:46. | :27:50.
recovery will benefit north and south. Speaking at the World | :27:51. | :27:53.
Economic Forum in Switzerland, he warned it would take time before | :27:54. | :27:59.
people felt the recovery in their pockets. That is Scott. I'm back | :28:00. | :28:04.
with the heads at 8.00pm and the late bulletin after the 10.00pm | :28:05. | :28:08.
news, as usual. Until then, from everyone here in the team in | :28:09. | :28:12.
Scotland and Glasgow, and around the country, have a very good evening. | :28:13. | :28:14.
Goodbye! | :28:15. | :28:16. |
