Thousands of protest to remain in Independence Square tonight, | :00:00. | :00:00.
It's a silver for Britain's men curlers but disappointment as the | :00:00. | :00:14.
Canadians overwhelm them to take gold in Sochi. | :00:15. | :00:25.
I just feel so disappointed for not getting the gold medal. I will | :00:26. | :00:31.
appreciate that and another five minutes. | :00:32. | :00:34.
And Scots speed skater Elise Christie crashes out of her semi | :00:35. | :00:37.
final and is disqualified for a third time. | :00:38. | :00:43.
We'll be live in Sochi with the latest. | :00:44. | :00:45.
Also on the programme, a private school in Aberdeen is closed by | :00:46. | :00:48.
ministers after an investigation into the safety and care of children | :00:49. | :00:52.
there. Secure in his uncle's arms - a baby | :00:53. | :00:56.
badly burned in a gas explosion in Pakistan arrives in Glasgow for | :00:57. | :01:03.
treatment. And join me a little later where | :01:04. | :01:09.
Scotland are preparing to do battle for some much needed Six Nations | :01:10. | :01:11.
pride. Good evening. There's been double | :01:12. | :01:24.
disappointment for Scots competing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi. | :01:25. | :01:27.
David Murdoch's all-Scottish curling team lost their gold medal match | :01:28. | :01:32.
against Canada. And in the last hour, there was more disappointment | :01:33. | :01:35.
for Livingston's Elise Christie who was disqualified in controversial | :01:36. | :01:37.
fashion in her semi final. David McDaid is in Sochi for us now. | :01:38. | :01:43.
We'll get to the curling in a minute, David, but Elise Christie. | :01:44. | :01:53.
What happened? This was the distance at which she | :01:54. | :01:58.
was expected to take a medal, perhaps the cold. This was the 1000 | :01:59. | :02:05.
metres at which she is the European champion. Going into the last lap, | :02:06. | :02:14.
she was second when it appeared that she was clipped by a Chinese athlete | :02:15. | :02:20.
from behind. That said both the athletes crashing into the side | :02:21. | :02:24.
barriers. There was some discussion afterwards as to what happened and | :02:25. | :02:31.
after some discussion between the various judges, they awarded Elise | :02:32. | :02:38.
Christie a penalty effectively disqualifying her from the race. | :02:39. | :02:42.
There was a lot of mystification as to what actually happened but we are | :02:43. | :02:48.
perhaps hearing she may have changed lanes at the wrong time. Triple | :02:49. | :02:52.
disappointment now for Elise Christie, going home now with | :02:53. | :02:59.
nothing and afterwards she spoke to BBC sport. I never in 100 years | :03:00. | :03:07.
expected to be penalised. I don't understand it. With the 500, I knew | :03:08. | :03:13.
there was a chance, it was different, but I am devastated. I | :03:14. | :03:20.
have spent all this time training. As you could see, I was getting so | :03:21. | :03:27.
strongly. I had not even given it everything yet. The men's curling | :03:28. | :03:35.
team won silver but gold never really looked a possibility? Just | :03:36. | :03:40.
finished a couple of hours ago behind me. It was a close match | :03:41. | :03:47.
between Britain and Canada but today it was quite a different affair. | :03:48. | :03:53.
Great Britain found themselves 6-1 down and after that it was a | :03:54. | :03:58.
struggle but they do get the silver and added to the women's bronze it | :03:59. | :04:04.
has been an excellent tournament for Great Britain and Scotland's | :04:05. | :04:06.
curling. In Lockerbie, they had gathered | :04:07. | :04:20.
hoping to celebrate gold one by one of the Roman. -- their own. Their | :04:21. | :04:32.
hopes were quickly dashed as Canada took dominance to deny Great Britain | :04:33. | :04:40.
the ultimate prize. After some dramatic matches, a comprehensive | :04:41. | :04:46.
defeat by the favourites. It feels like a kick in the case just now. To | :04:47. | :04:55.
be honest it has been an amazing week and we are so proud of the | :04:56. | :05:02.
guys. We have fought through the play-offs and played some incredible | :05:03. | :05:11.
games to get into this final. Gold may have gone but 2000 miles | :05:12. | :05:18.
away they were partying anyway. The first men's curling medal in 80 | :05:19. | :05:23.
years. They have done Scotland than Great Britain proud. A silver medal | :05:24. | :05:31.
is a huge success. The boys have not disgraced themselves and tried their | :05:32. | :05:37.
best and we cannot ask any more. A very proud Canadian wife watches has | :05:38. | :05:44.
achievements. I cannot wait to see him on the podium tomorrow. I am so | :05:45. | :05:52.
excited. What have you made only support from home? It has been | :05:53. | :05:57.
outrageous, I probably don't know the half of it. It is such a nice | :05:58. | :06:10.
feeling. Now there hard work is over, the celebrations can begin. | :06:11. | :06:18.
That silver medal takes Great Britain's tally to four medals, two | :06:19. | :06:27.
of them one by Scots. Stuart Benson from Scotland as part of the | :06:28. | :06:32.
bobsleigh team and they go on Sunday and many are tipping them to win a | :06:33. | :06:34.
medal. A private school in Aberdeen has | :06:35. | :06:37.
been shut down by the Scottish government amid serious concerns | :06:38. | :06:39.
about the safety and well-being of children. On Monday, the city | :06:40. | :06:42.
council will re-open a mothballed primary school, for up to 125 | :06:43. | :06:47.
children from the Hamilton school. Our reporter Steven Duff is outside | :06:48. | :06:51.
the school in the city's west end. Steven, a pretty drastic step? | :06:52. | :07:04.
It is one month since allegations over the children here that Hamilton | :07:05. | :07:09.
are silly and school emerged. Two members of staff are facing a report | :07:10. | :07:14.
to the procurator fiscal after police enquiries and today the | :07:15. | :07:17.
Scottish government decided to close the school and also the nursery. The | :07:18. | :07:22.
Sheriff will take a decision on that next week. Inspectors say that on | :07:23. | :07:28.
two occasions while in classrooms they had to step in because of fears | :07:29. | :07:33.
over the health and safety of children, and they are assuming they | :07:34. | :07:37.
are issuing three other child protection is used to police. This | :07:38. | :07:41.
has only happened once in Scotland in the last ten years and the | :07:42. | :07:45.
minister who took the decision said he had no other option. We received | :07:46. | :07:52.
a report from the education inspectors which makes very clear | :07:53. | :07:58.
that they are not confident about the safety of the children and the | :07:59. | :08:04.
school, the welfare of the children. That left us with absolutely no | :08:05. | :08:08.
choice but to make sure the school is closed. What will this mean for | :08:09. | :08:16.
the children in the school? There was a lot of tears as parents picked | :08:17. | :08:23.
up the children today. Parents said they had been left shell-shocked. | :08:24. | :08:29.
Aberdeen City Council has stepped in and is opening a mothballed, | :08:30. | :08:36.
recently closed primary school. A meeting will be held for concerned | :08:37. | :08:42.
parents tomorrow morning. The school itself says it has been left stunned | :08:43. | :08:46.
by the decision and is considering whether to appeal. | :08:47. | :08:47.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on | :08:48. | :08:50.
tonight's programme. This unique portrait of Bonnie | :08:51. | :08:53.
Prince Charlie painted in 1745 eventually comes to light. | :08:54. | :08:58.
And showing a movie a night in unlikely venues - how Glasgow Film | :08:59. | :09:01.
Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary. | :09:02. | :09:08.
A baby boy, who was badly burned in a gas explosion at his home in | :09:09. | :09:13.
Pakistan, has arrived in Scotland for specialist treatment. The rest | :09:14. | :09:23.
of Mohammad Sudais's family was killed in the blast. The child's | :09:24. | :09:26.
uncle, who lives in Glasgow, has campaigned to bring him here, and | :09:27. | :09:29.
the Scottish government is paying for his treatment. You may find some | :09:30. | :09:33.
of the images in Catriona Renton's report distressing. | :09:34. | :09:38.
After a long and difficult journey, baby Mohammad Sudais arrived in | :09:39. | :09:43.
Glasgow airport yesterday evening with his uncle, now one of his | :09:44. | :09:48.
closest remaining relatives. I am pleased he is here and there is | :09:49. | :09:52.
going to be treated here. He met other members of his family, | :09:53. | :09:59.
relieved he is now here. I feel grateful and amazed that I see him | :10:00. | :10:05.
for the first time. Mohammad Sudais was just under two months old when a | :10:06. | :10:15.
gas explosion killed his father, his mother and his 13-month-old brother. | :10:16. | :10:21.
Mohammad Sudais survived but his uncle said he survived skin loss to | :10:22. | :10:26.
his face, doctors in Pakistan said they could do no more for him but | :10:27. | :10:31.
recommended the best gear was in Glasgow. He was taken to Yorkhill | :10:32. | :10:37.
Hospital last night. The Scottish government are paying for his | :10:38. | :10:40.
treatment and campaigners have raised almost ?30,000 for him. They | :10:41. | :10:45.
say for now he is Scotland's baby and his uncle says he is already | :10:46. | :10:53.
improving. He travelled for almost 15 hours and there is much better | :10:54. | :10:57.
today and I would like to thank the hospital here, the doctors and | :10:58. | :11:04.
nurses and the whole staff. You can see the smile on my face today | :11:05. | :11:07.
because I know my nephew is in good hands. He is spending his second | :11:08. | :11:14.
night here in Glasgow and doctors will continue to assess and over the | :11:15. | :11:17.
weekend to determine exactly what kind of treatment he needs. They | :11:18. | :11:22.
will then have a better idea of how long he will spend in hospital. | :11:23. | :11:32.
Concerns are being raised from oil workers in the North East about | :11:33. | :11:35.
plans to impose a size limit on those travelling offshore. It's one | :11:36. | :11:38.
of a series of changes being put forward by the Civil Aviation | :11:39. | :11:41.
Authority following a wide-ranging review. Unions say it's important | :11:42. | :11:44.
nobody loses their job as a result. Kevin Keane reports. | :11:45. | :11:54.
It is a routine part of the job for many thousands of offshore workers | :11:55. | :11:58.
like this, taking the helicopter out to the platform, something they do | :11:59. | :12:05.
every month. With each accident and fatality comes a reminder of the | :12:06. | :12:12.
dangers involved. At this training facility, recent crashes are the | :12:13. | :12:16.
front people's mines, the session today overrunning the cause of so | :12:17. | :12:24.
many new questions. The plant size limit is one of the most contentious | :12:25. | :12:32.
issues. They are obviously must be a weight limit but there are larger | :12:33. | :12:42.
blokes, not so much heavier. I am not exactly small myself so maybe | :12:43. | :12:45.
some people would be scared sitting beside me. Around 1000 people a week | :12:46. | :12:53.
take part in training like this in centres across Aberdeen. It is a | :12:54. | :12:59.
scenario nobody wants to find themselves in but everybody has to | :13:00. | :13:04.
prepare for. Already many workers are doing something about it. This | :13:05. | :13:11.
clinic has devised a diet plan for offshore workers and has seen | :13:12. | :13:16.
enquiries rise, and many who have made the diet work believe it is | :13:17. | :13:30.
beneficial to health and clear. It is limiting your career in the | :13:31. | :13:35.
future, no question about it. It has been a disaster allowing people to | :13:36. | :13:39.
go offshore when there has been a health and safety issue, so I think | :13:40. | :13:46.
this will focus everybody's attention. This is no doubt this | :13:47. | :13:50.
will be the most divisive change and representatives began discussion | :13:51. | :13:57.
today to see how it would work. Campaigners are calling on MSPs to | :13:58. | :14:01.
back a bill which would allow the NHS to reclaim the cost of treating | :14:02. | :14:04.
asbestos-related conditions. If passed, they say the Scottish NHS | :14:05. | :14:07.
could claim back around ?20 million a year from insurers. Scott worked | :14:08. | :14:25.
as all life as he joined in. Without knowing it, as best odds were slowly | :14:26. | :14:36.
destroying his lungs. Used to do all my own work in the house, I cannot | :14:37. | :14:45.
know do that. But I try not to let it get me down. Despite his | :14:46. | :14:54.
breathing difficulties, he joined campaigners today to support a new | :14:55. | :15:02.
campaign which would allow the NHS to recover its costs. This bill | :15:03. | :15:13.
would extend the legislation to people suffering conditions related | :15:14. | :15:24.
to asbestos. Experts are saying they are already seeing an increase in | :15:25. | :15:33.
patients. It would be very helpful to put some of that money back and | :15:34. | :15:37.
it would allow us to provide better services. The insurers responsible | :15:38. | :15:50.
neglected to comment today. Scott is simply looking for the compensation | :15:51. | :15:55.
he would have got, but could not because most of his past employers | :15:56. | :16:01.
have since stopped training. A look at some other stories from | :16:02. | :16:04.
across Scotland this Friday evening... A university lab with | :16:05. | :16:14.
dirty play stations has been unveiled at Dundee University. And | :16:15. | :16:22.
you campaigning courage and people to visit Edinburgh city centre will | :16:23. | :16:34.
boost trade by millions of pounds. Television adverts, posters and | :16:35. | :16:38.
social media will all help promote the campaign. I think there has been | :16:39. | :16:44.
a problem in people being able to move about the city. I think people | :16:45. | :16:53.
have forgotten, or maybe don't even know about some of the heading gems | :16:54. | :16:59.
that we have. The discovery offers best odds has stop the demolition of | :17:00. | :17:07.
a block of flats because of the unexpected find asbestos of. And you | :17:08. | :17:15.
gauge showing people how to survive or prevent being in an avalanche has | :17:16. | :17:26.
been produced. The main messages that it gives the format for the | :17:27. | :17:31.
processes for people to follow. It will make life a lot much easier for | :17:32. | :17:37.
them. A lost portrait of Bonnie Prince | :17:38. | :17:40.
Charlie has been discovered in Scotland. The painting is the only | :17:41. | :17:44.
one known to have been from his life in Britain, and was painted in | :17:45. | :17:48.
Edinburgh in 1745, the year he launched his ill-fated invasion of | :17:49. | :17:55.
England. They are paintings of him as a young boy and portraits of him | :17:56. | :18:00.
in middle age, but no contemporary images of Bonnie Prince Charlie at | :18:01. | :18:06.
the DataViz fame where thought to exist. Until now. This portrait was | :18:07. | :18:20.
painted in 1745 in Edinburgh. Absolutely splendid. It has this | :18:21. | :18:28.
tremendous immediacy. It is a wonderful record of this particular | :18:29. | :18:34.
moment in time. For more than 250 years, it remained unseen in the | :18:35. | :18:46.
Private collection. Until a BBC documentary team discovered its true | :18:47. | :18:50.
significance. It certainly captures the Prince at his most romantic. At | :18:51. | :18:56.
the time this was painted, he had just won the big battle outside | :18:57. | :19:00.
Edinburgh. He was just about to take the decision to invade England. He | :19:01. | :19:05.
was feeling fantastically confident and believe this is him at his | :19:06. | :19:14.
pomp. After this was painted, things began to go wrong for him. It was | :19:15. | :19:18.
thought it was painted at the Palace at Holyrood to house. This was meant | :19:19. | :19:30.
to be a public relations spending, a portrait meant to be sent around the | :19:31. | :19:35.
rest of England should Bonnie Prince Charlie have landed the English | :19:36. | :19:38.
crown. And you can see the full story in a | :19:39. | :19:42.
Culture Show Special, The Lost Portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie, | :19:43. | :19:45.
tomorrow night at nine o'clock on BBC Two. Letters get the rest of the | :19:46. | :19:53.
sport. If you have picked yourselves up | :19:54. | :19:56.
from the disappointment of the speed skating, and I am not sure I have, | :19:57. | :20:00.
we can talk rugby. We will not be disqualified from the Six Nations, | :20:01. | :20:03.
but Scotland could finish last. After two heavy defeats, a win | :20:04. | :20:06.
tomorrow in Italy could be crucial in avoiding that fate. In a city | :20:07. | :20:19.
that stage the odd battle over the years, the Scottish foot soldiers | :20:20. | :20:27.
arrived, looking for inspiration in victory, regardless of what the | :20:28. | :20:30.
local people might think. We need to get some pride back and show the | :20:31. | :20:38.
world that we can still play rugby. It is all about getting payback and | :20:39. | :20:47.
the result will be fantastic. Some unwanted records have already been | :20:48. | :20:54.
set this championship. It has led to strong words in another Scottish | :20:55. | :21:00.
rugby. I can understand why people are angry. We have not done our jobs | :21:01. | :21:15.
properly. Scotland lies victory in Italy came in 2006. For those | :21:16. | :21:26.
training today, comes the challenge of facing the most experienced pack | :21:27. | :21:30.
and rugby. They are an experienced team. It is all about a silencing | :21:31. | :21:39.
the code. If we do what we need to do correctly, we should be all | :21:40. | :21:45.
right. Rome has stage more than the odd important battle, but tomorrow, | :21:46. | :21:48.
we will find out if Scotland are for the fight. | :21:49. | :21:53.
Let us what cheery fare we can find elsewhere in Scottish sport! | :21:54. | :21:55.
If Celtic's Fraser Forster does not concede a goal in the first 31 | :21:56. | :21:59.
minutes of their league match with Hearts tomorrow, he will set a new | :22:00. | :22:02.
Scottish record for keeping his goal intact of 1,156 minutes. It would be | :22:03. | :22:12.
a great record to break. It has not been easy. He has had to pull off | :22:13. | :22:19.
some fantastic saves along the way. But he is almost the. | :22:20. | :22:21.
Motherwell, fresh from beating Partick Thistle last week, will | :22:22. | :22:24.
knock Aberdeen off second spot in the Premiership if they beat Dundee | :22:25. | :22:28.
United away tonight. The Dons will be second again, regardless, if they | :22:29. | :22:30.
win at Thistle tomorrow. And you can listen to live coverage | :22:31. | :22:34.
of match on BBC Radio Scotland on digital and online in Sportsound, | :22:35. | :22:38.
kick off 7.45pm. The show is on air now. | :22:39. | :22:41.
Inverness boss John Hughes says left back Graham Shinnie should get a | :22:42. | :22:45.
call up to the Scotland squad. Hughes says he wants national team | :22:46. | :22:48.
manger Gordon Strachan to watch Shinnie play. | :22:49. | :22:52.
This was Pittodrie Stadium this morning, as tickets went on sale to | :22:53. | :22:56.
Aberdeen fans for next month's League Cup final against Inverness. | :22:57. | :22:59.
This is not the scamble for tickets in Inverness! It is last year's | :23:00. | :23:03.
National Cross-Country Championships. This year's event is | :23:04. | :23:07.
in Falkirk tomorrow and the start will be even more jam-packed, with a | :23:08. | :23:11.
record number of entries taking part. | :23:12. | :23:13.
Andy Murray and his GB Davis Cup team-mates will play their | :23:14. | :23:15.
quarterfinal against Italy on clay in Naples. It is Britain's first | :23:16. | :23:20.
quarter final in 28 years, having beaten the USA earlier this month. | :23:21. | :23:25.
And more on the speed skating, the curling and other Scottish sport | :23:26. | :23:28.
stories, 24 hours a day, on BBC Sport Scotland's website. That is it | :23:29. | :23:37.
for tonight. It started as a small celebration | :23:38. | :23:42.
for film fans. Ten years on, the Glasgow Film Festival has become the | :23:43. | :23:46.
third biggest in the UK with hundreds of events over the next ten | :23:47. | :23:58.
days. The festival opened last night. It opened with the whimsical | :23:59. | :24:08.
comedy grand hotel Budapest. One of his earlier films will be screened | :24:09. | :24:15.
on board the tall ship. Frankenstein will be staged in the Kelvingrove | :24:16. | :24:22.
Art Gallery, or descend into central station to this secret cinema. | :24:23. | :24:27.
Despite not knowing what film will be shown, all four joints have | :24:28. | :24:35.
already sold out. People want some added value to the experience. It is | :24:36. | :24:42.
not just about the film. We have got a great reputation for providing | :24:43. | :24:48.
this. I will not be treated in this manner! It is now the third biggest | :24:49. | :24:53.
film Festival in the United Kingdom and the secret has been giving | :24:54. | :24:57.
audiences what they want, further it is a film about Mary Queen of Scots | :24:58. | :25:03.
Tory Scottish science-fiction thriller. It will always have a | :25:04. | :25:12.
family unique feel about it, the Glasgow Film Festival. We want to | :25:13. | :25:20.
keep the cost the same. It is about going to see great movies and also | :25:21. | :25:27.
making friendships along the way. The rugby fit to match the films | :25:28. | :25:40.
tonight, with pizza on the menu. C how the weather is shaping up for | :25:41. | :25:41.
the weekend. At the moment, a fairly heavy band | :25:42. | :25:54.
of showers across the Central Belt and North run hills. There is | :25:55. | :26:01.
actually a lot of dry weather overnight. Holding onto the rain | :26:02. | :26:10.
across the far North. Temperatures generally three of four Celsius | :26:11. | :26:13.
overnight. We have this weather front approaching tomorrow morning, | :26:14. | :26:22.
but things will settle down with the high pressure behind it at the start | :26:23. | :26:26.
of next week. Tomorrow will start try and bright, with the best of the | :26:27. | :26:31.
weather in the north-east of the country. But as the day wears on | :26:32. | :26:37.
into the afternoon, you can see this heavy band of rain just off the | :26:38. | :26:46.
western coast. High temperatures of eight Celsius in the Central Belt, | :26:47. | :26:52.
slightly warmer in the north-east of the country. The dry weather could | :26:53. | :27:04.
extend from Caithness into Orkney. Certainly when the a few are | :27:05. | :27:06.
thinking of heading for the heel hills. There could be severe gales | :27:07. | :27:14.
developing. We will see some sleet and snow coming over the western | :27:15. | :27:23.
hills, with also held fog. There is a yellow warning out for parts of | :27:24. | :27:33.
western Scotland for heavy rain in the afternoon tomorrow and on | :27:34. | :27:37.
Sunday. It is really not going anywhere. It will be a wet night | :27:38. | :27:46.
tomorrow and wet to Sunday. It will be a male day on Sunday, despite all | :27:47. | :27:52.
that rain. Eventually, the rain will move away and brighter weather | :27:53. | :28:05.
coming in behind it. I will be back with elite bulletin just after the | :28:06. | :28:12.
ten o'clock news. From everyone on our team, right across the country, | :28:13. | :28:14.
goodbye for now. | :28:15. | :28:16. |
