On Reporting Scotland: fresh claims about who was responsible for | :00:00. | :00:07.
blowing up Pan Am Flight 103, casting further doubt over the only | :00:08. | :00:10.
conviction for the Lockerbie bombing. | :00:11. | :00:15.
We speak to the women who say they have been left in agony by a | :00:16. | :00:18.
commonly used treatment for incontinence. | :00:19. | :00:24.
I do not think that the pain ever goes away. I have pain all over. | :00:25. | :00:32.
Also on the programme: the clever invention to make waitressing | :00:33. | :00:34.
easier, but could changes in the patent rules be about to discourage | :00:35. | :00:37.
more Scottish inventors? And rugby training Barbados style - | :00:38. | :00:40.
we catch up with the Queen's Baton on the latest leg of its journey of | :00:41. | :00:43.
the Commonwealth. And find out why these Aberdeen | :00:44. | :00:47.
players are watching the golf at St Andrews. | :00:48. | :00:58.
Good evening. There are fresh claims tonight about | :00:59. | :01:06.
the Lockerbie bombing, that if true, cast further doubt on the Scottish | :01:07. | :01:11.
criminal investigation. So far, Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi is the only | :01:12. | :01:14.
person to be convicted of the atrocity in which 270 people died. | :01:15. | :01:18.
The Libyan Secret Service agent was jailed for life in 2001, and died | :01:19. | :01:22.
two years ago, protesting his innocence. But this evening in a | :01:23. | :01:25.
documentary by the Al Jazeera TV channel, it's claimed this man, | :01:26. | :01:28.
Ahmed Jibril, a Palestinian, is the mastermind behind the plot, working | :01:29. | :01:31.
on behalf of the Iranians. Campaigners say it's further proof | :01:32. | :01:33.
Megrahi's conviction was a miscarriage of justice. The Crown | :01:34. | :01:36.
Office says the claims are not new and is continuing its investigations | :01:37. | :01:38.
in Libya. Did this lead to the Lockerbie | :01:39. | :01:53.
bombing? An American naval bombing shoots down an Iranian Airbus | :01:54. | :02:02.
carrying pilgrims. This ship claimed it believed it was being targeted by | :02:03. | :02:06.
a guided missile but Iran's leaders cite as an attack against them and | :02:07. | :02:12.
vowed hit back. This is crucial. They thought that | :02:13. | :02:15.
if they did not retaliate against the latest they'd been continued to | :02:16. | :02:18.
shoot down the civilian airlines. If you do not understand that, do not | :02:19. | :02:26.
understand Lockerbie. This man has long been suspected of involvement | :02:27. | :02:29.
and Al Jazeera now says it has proved. The Iranians asked them to | :02:30. | :02:44.
bring down several aeroplanes. If this was true it would mean the | :02:45. | :02:47.
conviction of Al-Megrahi was a miscarriage of justice That is a | :02:48. | :02:54.
view long held by many British campaigners. | :02:55. | :02:56.
We know the official version is not right. When the verdict is | :02:57. | :02:59.
overturned we shall be asking for the truth, because if they do not | :03:00. | :03:03.
tell us, under European law, we will take them to the European Court. | :03:04. | :03:10.
After 25 years, the Lockerbie investigation continues. Prosecutors | :03:11. | :03:13.
have visited Libya in a bid to track down other people involved in the | :03:14. | :03:17.
plot. It must be disappointing for the | :03:18. | :03:20.
families to listen to these theories, which are being presented | :03:21. | :03:25.
as something new. But these are theories that have been played out | :03:26. | :03:31.
many times before. Despite claims made in the | :03:32. | :03:37.
programme, the Iranians Government has denied any role in the Lockerbie | :03:38. | :03:45.
bombing. Advanced, free training is being | :03:46. | :03:48.
offered to young drivers in the Borders to try to reduce the high | :03:49. | :03:52.
number being killed and injured on the region's roads. Although there's | :03:53. | :03:55.
been a slight improvement, in 2012, nationwide 174 people died in | :03:56. | :03:58.
traffic accidents. Of that number, 31 were aged 16-24. Police say young | :03:59. | :04:02.
people account for up to a quarter of those killed and injured on our | :04:03. | :04:03.
roads. I will give you guidance, but it is | :04:04. | :04:17.
down to yourself, with practice in between sessions... | :04:18. | :04:22.
The district say that this driver is eight times more likely to crash and | :04:23. | :04:26.
his parents. He has a one in four chance during his first two years on | :04:27. | :04:30.
the road. He has already seen happen to others but does not think it will | :04:31. | :04:33.
happen to him. One of my friends crashed burqa a | :04:34. | :04:39.
few weeks ago so I have seen the consequences. I tried to drive as | :04:40. | :04:43.
deeply as I can. There is much more to it than the | :04:44. | :04:49.
driving test teaches. You can see this bridge on the right... | :04:50. | :04:55.
MLE is training with the Institute of Advanced Motorists. | :04:56. | :05:05.
It struck me that with the possibility of improving the driving | :05:06. | :05:11.
of these drivers we could also improve the likelihood of | :05:12. | :05:17.
fatalities. They will spend several thousand | :05:18. | :05:22.
pounds to extend training to younger drivers. Advanced drivers are less | :05:23. | :05:30.
likely to be involved in a crash. There is no information in this | :05:31. | :05:35.
country but a similar scheme in Austria managed to cut the number of | :05:36. | :05:40.
people crashes among young people by nearly 50% over ten years. This girl | :05:41. | :05:46.
says that advanced training has made her a better driver and recommends | :05:47. | :05:51.
it. They may think they are the best driver but the will certainly be put | :05:52. | :05:56.
in the place when the drivers. Their confidence will improve. | :05:57. | :06:04.
You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on | :06:05. | :06:07.
tonight's programme: hundreds of workers at the Faslane and Coulport | :06:08. | :06:10.
naval bases stage a walk-out over pay. | :06:11. | :06:13.
In sport, news of the departure of a National head coach. | :06:14. | :06:17.
And they may be at the home of golf, but Dons boss Derek McInnes is | :06:18. | :06:20.
focused on another beautiful game, and victory in Sunday's League Cup | :06:21. | :06:22.
Final. Some of the women who've been | :06:23. | :06:31.
damaged by a commonly used surgical implant to treat incontinence have | :06:32. | :06:34.
been speaking about their experience, ahead of impending legal | :06:35. | :06:36.
action. Hundreds of cases are expected to go before Scottish | :06:37. | :06:39.
courts in the coming months. Warning: this report deals with | :06:40. | :06:42.
issues which may not be suitable for children. One woman in three over | :06:43. | :06:54.
the age of 30 seconds from incontinence, often as a result of | :06:55. | :06:59.
childbirth. Mesh implants usually support the bladder and have become | :07:00. | :07:05.
a common treatment. Some women say these implants have hardened inside | :07:06. | :07:10.
them. It has horrific consequences. This woman had her operation several | :07:11. | :07:15.
years ago and has had surgery for times to try to remove the implant. | :07:16. | :07:20.
Bthe pain never goes away. I have pain all over. In September, they | :07:21. | :07:31.
reckoned they had removed all the mesh. But I do not think it is a | :07:32. | :07:36.
way. This woman wants to speak to me | :07:37. | :07:41.
anonymously. She was left in agony, but the hard mesh inside her has had | :07:42. | :07:45.
other consequences. Before I got the implants, me and my | :07:46. | :07:51.
husband could have sex, but no sex is not possible because I have the | :07:52. | :07:55.
implants. We do not have a sex life. It has taken its toll on my | :07:56. | :08:01.
marriage. Both women are among hundreds of | :08:02. | :08:04.
cases due to come before Scottish courts. There are massive class | :08:05. | :08:12.
actions in America cause of the impact of these medical devices on | :08:13. | :08:21.
women. It also affects some men. The organisation which regulates | :08:22. | :08:24.
implants is that the benefits of mesh implants outweigh the risks. | :08:25. | :08:31.
New information leaflets are being compiled by the Scottish Government. | :08:32. | :08:35.
But this woman feels alone and frightened. We were left in the | :08:36. | :08:41.
dark. There was something happening inside my body, what will it be like | :08:42. | :08:45.
in another five years? It would get any better. | :08:46. | :08:58.
A consultant has told a fatal accident inquiry that two students | :08:59. | :09:01.
would not have been killed if the man driving the car that hit them | :09:02. | :09:05.
told the truth on a DVLA form. Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart died | :09:06. | :09:08.
after being hit by William Payne's Range Rover in Glasgow in 2010. He | :09:09. | :09:12.
said on his form that he had no history of blackouts in the past | :09:13. | :09:16.
five years. Dr Neil Grubb - who produced a report based on his | :09:17. | :09:19.
medical records - said that was wrong. | :09:20. | :09:21.
Hundreds of workers have staged a walk out from the naval bases on the | :09:22. | :09:25.
Clyde which house the UK's nuclear deterrent. Unite members are in a | :09:26. | :09:28.
pay dispute with the management of Babcock Clyde. The union says it's | :09:29. | :09:32.
the first time in over forty years they've taken industrial action at | :09:33. | :09:41.
the Faslane and Coulport bases. The familiar sound of the bagpipes, | :09:42. | :09:47.
leading the walk-out from Faslane naval base. But industrial action is | :09:48. | :09:50.
not something these workers are told familiar. The union says it is the | :09:51. | :09:55.
first time many of these people have been on strike. Usually, they | :09:56. | :09:59.
maintain ships and nuclear submarines but today they went | :10:00. | :10:08.
outside into the sunshine. Instead of being a simple one year | :10:09. | :10:14.
deal, it is now a two-year deal for 2013 and 2014. It has strings | :10:15. | :10:19.
attached. It is complicated. Our members rejected it by mentioning | :10:20. | :10:35.
percent. -- were rejected by 19%. There was some worrying on the | :10:36. | :10:38.
walk-out today also. They would not give an interview but in a statement | :10:39. | :10:43.
read that the latest offer was an improvement. It was compatible to | :10:44. | :10:50.
other sites. The union says that this morning's walk-out is just the | :10:51. | :10:54.
beginning. They plan a series of one hour stoppages. They hope to | :10:55. | :10:58.
persuade the management to increase their offer. | :10:59. | :11:05.
?6.5 million of new money is being given for training people to work in | :11:06. | :11:08.
information technology. The Scottish government's new digital | :11:09. | :11:10.
technologies Skills Investment Plan will train teachers and careers | :11:11. | :11:13.
guidance officers, as well as funding industry led programmes for | :11:14. | :11:16.
graduates. It's thought as many as 11,000 jobs could be created in the | :11:17. | :11:24.
sector each year. Scottish environmental watchdogs are | :11:25. | :11:27.
to be given new powers to regulate the nuclear sites run by the | :11:28. | :11:31.
Ministry of Defence in Scotland. The Environment Secretary, Richard | :11:32. | :11:33.
Lochhead, has announced plans to change the law because the MoD did | :11:34. | :11:36.
not publicly disclose details of a radiation problem at HMS Vulcan two | :11:37. | :11:49.
years ago. Next to Dounreay, HMS Vulcan tests the nuclear reactors | :11:50. | :11:55.
used on legal submarines. A test reactor developed a problem two | :11:56. | :11:57.
years ago and it is concern here that the community was not told. | :11:58. | :12:02.
It is disappointing that we work closely with HMS Vulcan and I have | :12:03. | :12:09.
looked back at meeting minutes and there is no record of any report of | :12:10. | :12:12.
the leak or any concerns about the site. | :12:13. | :12:19.
What nuclear news was given locally? In January 2012, the MoD said there | :12:20. | :12:23.
was little to report. In April, he said that it was business as usual. | :12:24. | :12:28.
By September, trials were said to be continuing on schedule. At no point | :12:29. | :12:34.
was the leak of radiation mentioned. Low levels of radioactivity were | :12:35. | :12:39.
detected in the cooling water... The Defence Secretary disclosed | :12:40. | :12:41.
these details last week, but only because he had decided to refuel HMS | :12:42. | :12:46.
Vanguard as a precaution at the cost of hundred and ?20 million. Here, | :12:47. | :12:52.
ministers are furious they were not told about the radiation problem two | :12:53. | :12:56.
years ago. Even though, it is classed as a low-level event without | :12:57. | :12:59.
safety risks. The UK Government owes people of | :13:00. | :13:05.
Scotland and apology and there should be far greater openness in | :13:06. | :13:08.
the future about nuclear activity in Scotland. This event is classed as | :13:09. | :13:14.
the role on the international atomic agency's measurement scale, so why | :13:15. | :13:19.
are the Scottish Government scaremongering? | :13:20. | :13:24.
The MoD said that there is a national security interest in | :13:25. | :13:30.
withholding information about nuclear ships. | :13:31. | :13:38.
A look at other stories from the across the country. | :13:39. | :13:41.
The Labour-run administration on Aberdeen City Council is to press | :13:42. | :13:44.
ahead with sending out controversial letters endorsing a No vote in | :13:45. | :13:47.
September's independence referendum. Around 200,000 letters will be | :13:48. | :13:50.
included in bills sent out to council tax payers. The SNP has | :13:51. | :13:53.
called for them to be pulped. The Scottish Government's being | :13:54. | :13:56.
criticised for failing to include dedicated cycle lanes on each side | :13:57. | :13:59.
of the A9 as part of dualling the route between Inverness and Perth. | :14:00. | :14:02.
The Scottish Greens say Transport Scotland is likely to rule it out | :14:03. | :14:05.
due to environmental impacts and costs. | :14:06. | :14:11.
A new study involving Strathclyde and Dundee Universities suggests | :14:12. | :14:13.
obesity in adolescent girls is associated with lower academic | :14:14. | :14:16.
results during their teenage years. Researchers found those classed as | :14:17. | :14:19.
obese at the age of eleven achieved lower results than those of a | :14:20. | :14:26.
healthy weight. The Lanarkshire based engineering | :14:27. | :14:28.
contractor Motherwell Bridge has been bought in a ?37.6 million deal. | :14:29. | :14:32.
The company, which employs 300 people, will retain its headquarters | :14:33. | :14:35.
in Motherwell. It's been acquired by Cape plc, which provides support to | :14:36. | :14:37.
the energy and mineral resources sectors. | :14:38. | :14:46.
BBC Scotland has been told only one traffic warden is now operating | :14:47. | :14:49.
across the whole of the Borders. Police Scotland intended to withdraw | :14:50. | :14:52.
the service at the end of last month. They agreed to leave it in | :14:53. | :14:56.
place at the last minute, after Stirling, Falkirk and Scottish | :14:57. | :14:58.
Borders Councils threatened to take the plans to a judicial review. But | :14:59. | :15:02.
two of the Borders three wardens have already left the service. | :15:03. | :15:13.
We're a country famous for our pioneering inventions but under | :15:14. | :15:17.
sweeping changes proposed to patent rules, Scottish inventors and | :15:18. | :15:23.
designers could lose out. MPs are considering changes to the law to | :15:24. | :15:26.
make it easier to protect new inventions across Europe. But under | :15:27. | :15:30.
the plans, Scottish courts would no longer be able to hear those cases. | :15:31. | :15:44.
Ordering a copy can present a challenge, balancing that hot drink | :15:45. | :15:51.
on a tray takes skill. But look again. This tray is more than it | :15:52. | :15:56.
seems. There is hidden help on offer. It is the brainchild of | :15:57. | :16:04.
Allison, a Scottish inventor. She has a patented for her tray so it | :16:05. | :16:13.
can't be copied by a rival. Even with a heavy object on the edge of | :16:14. | :16:19.
it, it's like a magic trick. Is it safe from those who would like to | :16:20. | :16:25.
steal her idea? In theory! They would be broken the law if they | :16:26. | :16:32.
copied it, but it's not to say people try and copy patents all the | :16:33. | :16:37.
time. To prevent that, a new set of rules will soon apply all across | :16:38. | :16:43.
Europe. But for companies here, there's just one problem. Right | :16:44. | :16:48.
now, inventors can protect their product to legal action here in | :16:49. | :16:55.
Edinburgh. But the law is about to change and so is the court. In | :16:56. | :17:01.
future, inventors may have to take legal redress in London or even | :17:02. | :17:08.
Europe. All of these businesses potentially will be damaged by | :17:09. | :17:20.
having to go abroad. That will cost them a lot more money. The | :17:21. | :17:26.
government says in future, firms in all part of the UK, will be able to | :17:27. | :17:34.
protect inventions more easily. Sport now. Here's Rhona. | :17:35. | :17:44.
It's been the scene of some of Scottish sport's most historic | :17:45. | :17:51.
occasions. Today, the Old Course at St Andrews again took centre stage | :17:52. | :17:54.
but for slightly different reasons than usual. Our senior football | :17:55. | :17:59.
reporter, Alasdair Lamont, will reveal all. | :18:00. | :18:14.
I know what you are thinking. Beautiful day, barely a breath of | :18:15. | :18:23.
wind and we are at the home of golf. It's the Aberdeen League Cup final | :18:24. | :18:36.
media day. To have an opportunity to come away for a couple of days and | :18:37. | :18:42.
enjoy the hotel and the weather will be good preparation for us. The | :18:43. | :18:47.
semifinal win took them to the first final in 40 years. That could be a | :18:48. | :18:56.
platform for greater success. Winning should be like that every | :18:57. | :19:03.
week. I don't think it would do us any harm. Once we have experienced | :19:04. | :19:13.
that, we want that again. He needs to turn that winning mentality into | :19:14. | :19:16.
a trophy winning mentality. Meanwhile, the Inverness Caledonian | :19:17. | :19:18.
Thistle manager is no longer angry about having to play a league game | :19:19. | :19:22.
in the run-up to the final. John Hughes's team play Hibs tomorrow. He | :19:23. | :19:26.
HAD thought that was unfair so close to the League Cup final but after | :19:27. | :19:29.
Cally Thistle's 5-0 Scottish Cup defeat at the weekend, it seems he's | :19:30. | :19:40.
had a change of heart. It has worked for us because we need that game. I | :19:41. | :19:47.
am hoping that we can go and pick a team that can get back to winning | :19:48. | :20:00.
ways. We will try and win. Now a look at what else is happening | :20:01. | :20:10.
across Scottish sport: Scottish athletics is looking for its fourth | :20:11. | :20:20.
national head coach. Scotland rugby head coach Scott | :20:21. | :20:26.
Johnson is sticking with his stick -- with his skipper. We have | :20:27. | :20:36.
definitely moved forward and improved hugely. There have been a | :20:37. | :20:43.
number of young players who have come to the side and have had a run | :20:44. | :20:51.
of games and have gained experience. After a heavy loss this morning to | :20:52. | :20:56.
Finland, the curlers at the Paralympics enjoyed a win over | :20:57. | :21:03.
Norway. Three-time Paralympic champion has | :21:04. | :21:09.
received the bike she hopes to write to glory at the Commonwealth Games. | :21:10. | :21:15.
She says after the London Olympics, she can't wait for another home | :21:16. | :21:21.
games. I have had that dry run now. I think it will be amazing in | :21:22. | :21:32.
Glasgow. Andy Murray was caused problems. But | :21:33. | :21:39.
the Scot kept is called to win the match. Next up, he faces the | :21:40. | :21:41.
Canadian. I am feeling envy ends -- envious of | :21:42. | :22:01.
Beaumont today. The Queen's Baton Relay has been | :22:02. | :22:04.
continuing its journey around every Commonwealth nation and territory | :22:05. | :22:07.
ahead of the Games in Glasgow this July. The BBC's Mark Beaumont has | :22:08. | :22:10.
been with the baton all the way. This week, he's in Barbados with the | :22:11. | :22:14.
rugby sevens team, who will play Scotland in the opening matches. | :22:15. | :22:30.
It's the first stop in the Caribbean island. Asians of all ages came out | :22:31. | :22:41.
to celebrate the Queen 's Batten. A couple of months ago, this team were | :22:42. | :22:45.
not going to the games, but they have been called up last minute | :22:46. | :22:49.
because Nigeria have dropped out. So now, they have got a real race to | :22:50. | :22:55.
get ready in time. These players have come a long way since Barbados | :22:56. | :22:59.
was placed last at the Caribbean Championships. Not a chance! And | :23:00. | :23:09.
that's under the midday Caribbean sun! This is how you do your | :23:10. | :23:20.
training of the pitch? We get the resistance we need. Barbados will be | :23:21. | :23:27.
up against the reigning Commonwealth champions, New Zealand, and their | :23:28. | :23:33.
first game will be in a stadium of 50,000 fans against Scotland. It | :23:34. | :23:47.
will be amazing. The team include students, , a teacher and a delivery | :23:48. | :23:54.
driver who are now preparing for the biggest competition of their lives. | :23:55. | :23:58.
The coach is confident his players have what it takes. This is an | :23:59. | :24:03.
intelligent group of guys. They have adapted very quickly and built up | :24:04. | :24:13.
very good camaraderie. They have done a nice job of it. These players | :24:14. | :24:19.
might be amateurs but they are doing all they can to train like | :24:20. | :24:25.
professionals. Whether or not they can win against the odds, in a game | :24:26. | :24:30.
of rugby sevens, where speed counts, these Caribbean sprinters | :24:31. | :24:32.
will certainly be hard to catch. More sunshine coming our way. A | :24:33. | :24:49.
beautiful day across most of the country today. Our warmest of the | :24:50. | :24:56.
year so far. Last night, though, Aboyne was the coldest place in the | :24:57. | :25:05.
country. That happens every time. Tonight is no different. Under clear | :25:06. | :25:09.
skies, temperatures readily falling away. It is tried but frosty. Bigger | :25:10. | :25:18.
cloud into Shetland. Elsewhere, towns and cities down to freezing. | :25:19. | :25:25.
Tomorrow, cold and frosty start. Those mist and fog patches quickly | :25:26. | :25:29.
lifting and plenty of sunshine once again. Strathclyde, and for the | :25:30. | :25:40.
issue, plenty of sunshine. Under the cloud, a little bit cooler. That | :25:41. | :25:46.
cloud big enough for some light rain or drizzle, but further inland, | :25:47. | :25:52.
plenty of sunshine. Probably more in the way of sunshine compared with | :25:53. | :25:59.
today. Winds across the north-west fresh at times, but elsewhere, | :26:00. | :26:03.
reasonably light. This time tomorrow night, cloudy skies and light rain | :26:04. | :26:08.
or drizzle in the north-west. As we had to the week, high-pressure | :26:09. | :26:15.
starting to slip away from us. Some light and patchy outbreaks of rain | :26:16. | :26:19.
in the Northwest. Elsewhere, cloudier but still OK temperature | :26:20. | :26:24.
wise. Towards the end of the week, that low pressure continues to drift | :26:25. | :26:29.
away towards the south. That means wet and windy conditions. The | :26:30. | :26:36.
further south and east you are, the drier and brighter it will be. But | :26:37. | :26:41.
once again, temperatures into double digits. Tonight, cold and frosty and | :26:42. | :26:45.
it is clear skies. Now, a reminder of tonight's main | :26:46. | :26:48.
news: A documentary claims to have uncovered fresh evidence that Iran, | :26:49. | :26:51.
not Libya, ordered the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in | :26:52. | :26:54.
December 1988. The Al Jazeera programme suggests a Palestinian | :26:55. | :26:57.
terrorist group retaliated to an American warship shooting down an | :26:58. | :27:00.
Iranian civilian airliner. The Crown Office says the claims are not new. | :27:01. | :27:03.
Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is the only person to be convicted of the | :27:04. | :27:06.
atrocity in which 270 people died. The leader of the RMT union, Bob | :27:07. | :27:10.
Crow, has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 52. He was | :27:11. | :27:14.
involved in several high profile industrial disputes, including the | :27:15. | :27:17.
most recent, which brought London Underground to a standstill. | :27:18. | :27:24. |
