well. More details if you want to go on the website. That's

:00:00.:00:00.

Tonight, on Reporting Scotland: The people who're smuggled here as

:00:00.:00:09.

slaves. Last year, almost 100 adults and

:00:10.:00:12.

children were brought into Scotland, and forced to work or sexually

:00:13.:00:18.

exploited. I was actually locked in my room.

:00:19.:00:26.

The only time I was loud -- allowed out was 30 minutes a day to prepare

:00:27.:00:29.

myself something to eat. We'll hear from that victim in our

:00:30.:00:32.

exclusive report, as the Scottish government plans new laws tackling

:00:33.:00:34.

human trafficking. Also on the programme: Charles

:00:35.:00:37.

Kennedy urges the campaign for a No vote in the referendum to be more

:00:38.:00:41.

positive. The Silver City. Celebrations in

:00:42.:00:46.

Aberdeen, as the League Cup heads to Pittodrie's trophy room.

:00:47.:00:51.

And, as the Queen's Baton Relay travels around the Commonwealth, we

:00:52.:00:54.

reveal its Scottish route, as it heads to Glasgow for the Games.

:00:55.:01:11.

Good evening. Almost 100 adults and children were

:01:12.:01:17.

smuggled into Scotland last year as slaves. Victims were usually coerced

:01:18.:01:21.

into leaving their homes abroad for a better life, but then sexually

:01:22.:01:25.

exploited, or forced to work for no pay. Now, the Scottish government is

:01:26.:01:28.

introducing new laws to tackle so-called human trafficking. Our

:01:29.:01:30.

political correspondent Lucy Adams spoke to a victim.

:01:31.:01:42.

John was persecuted in Uganda for being gay. This is not his real

:01:43.:01:46.

name, because he still fears for his life.

:01:47.:01:59.

I barely escaped, only because she told me to run. Sometimes I wish I

:02:00.:02:05.

had stayed and done without. I don't know.

:02:06.:02:09.

He is one of hundreds of people trafficked into Scotland each year.

:02:10.:02:12.

When he arrived, he was forced to stay in a flat for two weeks.

:02:13.:02:20.

I was locked in my room. The only time I was allowed out was 30

:02:21.:02:24.

minutes a day, to prepare myself something to eat.

:02:25.:02:27.

John was then sold to a man for ?200. He escaped by jumping from the

:02:28.:02:34.

man's car. I just ran. I did not know what to

:02:35.:02:42.

do, or where I was going, I just ran.

:02:43.:02:44.

This could be a flat anywhere in Scotland. But, in reality, it is a

:02:45.:02:50.

safe house for the victims of modern slavery. An increasing problem in

:02:51.:02:56.

Scotland, one victim identified every four days. Police figures

:02:57.:02:59.

suggest the real problem is far higher. Here, staff do what they can

:03:00.:03:10.

to help those who have been rescued. Traditionally, many victims simply

:03:11.:03:15.

disappeared or were re-trafficked into the sex industry. According to

:03:16.:03:21.

the United Nations, we have 21 million victims globally of Human

:03:22.:03:24.

Trafficking Centre we could see that as awareness increases.

:03:25.:03:34.

Today, the Justice Secretary came to see for himself what could be done.

:03:35.:03:39.

He hopes the new bill will stop the girls who treat human beings as

:03:40.:03:44.

commodities. This is probably the worst crime that can be perpetrated

:03:45.:03:48.

against any individual. We have to stand up for what is right, to raise

:03:49.:03:55.

awareness. The politician who first proposed these changes welcomes the

:03:56.:03:59.

government backing. We need to make our communities and

:04:00.:04:03.

unwelcome place for traffickers and I hope the Scottish government will

:04:04.:04:09.

pass these laws to make that happen. For victims like John, a safe house

:04:10.:04:18.

and hope are vital. Somewhere where you are not afraid someone is after

:04:19.:04:21.

you. The former Liberal Democrat leader

:04:22.:04:28.

Charles Kennedy is calling for No campaigners to be "more positive",

:04:29.:04:30.

ahead of September's independence referendum. Mr Kennedy also called

:04:31.:04:33.

for "a more coherent blueprint" for further devolution to be agreed

:04:34.:04:37.

before the vote. Here's our political correspondent, Niall

:04:38.:04:38.

O'Gallagher. All smiles, as Charles Kennedy

:04:39.:04:49.

addresses students as Glasgow University rector. A week, before he

:04:50.:05:01.

hangs up his gown, he hopes Better Together colleagues.

:05:02.:05:04.

And negative approach will not resonate with voters. We should be

:05:05.:05:14.

more positive. I do not think Scots will feel bullied. The national

:05:15.:05:22.

instinct is more, who are they to come up here and tell us what to do?

:05:23.:05:30.

Today, Labour warned that independence could mean inflated

:05:31.:05:41.

bills for the Scots. It is important to set a positive

:05:42.:05:44.

case about why Scotland is independent. Mr Kennedy said parties

:05:45.:06:01.

need to agree a package of powers before Scots go to the polls. It

:06:02.:06:08.

would be better if we had a coherent blueprint for people. Voting no

:06:09.:06:19.

means yes to a distinct proposition. Scottish ministers agree opponents

:06:20.:06:24.

need to lay out their plans. There is a notice -- added bonus to be

:06:25.:06:32.

clear on what happens if people vote no. We hear vague talk about what

:06:33.:06:38.

powers will be delivered to Scotland. But there is no guarantee.

:06:39.:06:44.

Research of public opinion that supporters of the union and head of

:06:45.:06:49.

those who backed independence. But, with just six months to go, these

:06:50.:06:51.

remarks will be studied closely. Two teenagers who stole alcohol and

:06:52.:06:58.

charity tins from Glasgow's Clutha pub have been jailed for six months.

:06:59.:07:01.

16-year-old Jordan Parry and 18-year-old Darren Melrose broke

:07:02.:07:04.

into the pub less than three weeks after a helicopter crashed into its

:07:05.:07:08.

roof, killing ten people. A third teenager, 17-year-old Charmaine

:07:09.:07:10.

Holmes was given an 18-month community payback order.

:07:11.:07:17.

It's safe to assume there were a few sore heads among football fans in

:07:18.:07:22.

Aberdeen this morning, after their team lifted the League Cup at the

:07:23.:07:26.

weekend. It's the first major piece of silverware to make its way to

:07:27.:07:30.

Pittodrie in almost 20 years, as Kevin Keane reports.

:07:31.:07:39.

The moment Aberdeen fans have waited 19 years for. There are adults today

:07:40.:07:46.

who were not born the last time this scene was played out. While any

:07:47.:07:58.

self-respecting Aberdeen supporter is nursing a sore head today, there

:07:59.:08:01.

was delight from the alternative Red Army sporting Aberdeen colours. Long

:08:02.:08:05.

time coming, and really cool. It is great for the city.

:08:06.:08:08.

Great-grandson, my son and grandson were all there. Do you think they

:08:09.:08:15.

can do the double? I think they can.

:08:16.:08:21.

I am delighted. I am very happy for them.

:08:22.:08:28.

It was late last night, the Scottish League Cup finally arrived back in

:08:29.:08:31.

the city, after a nail-biting finish. The goalkeeper saved the

:08:32.:08:34.

first penalty. For Aberdeen, it was a turning point

:08:35.:08:52.

for the game and the club. We now have an opportunity to say Aberdeen

:08:53.:08:56.

can be a serious challenger in Scottish football again, that is

:08:57.:08:59.

what I desperately want to see, and the fans want to see.

:09:00.:09:05.

A subdued welcome in Aberdeen, the real celebrations will come when it

:09:06.:09:08.

is paraded around the city next Sunday.

:09:09.:09:11.

You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on

:09:12.:09:17.

tonight's programme: How pure is the air that we breathe?

:09:18.:09:20.

Scientists in Edinburgh are trying to find out just how much

:09:21.:09:22.

atmospheric pollution is affecting our health.

:09:23.:09:25.

In sport, we are in Aberdeen for the football side of things, as the

:09:26.:09:28.

first silverware of the season arrives at Pittodrie.

:09:29.:09:30.

And, what next for the Scotland rugby team, at the end of another

:09:31.:09:33.

disappointing Six Nations campaign? All the sport is coming soon.

:09:34.:09:40.

The Queen's Baton Relay will visit more than 400 communities, and pass

:09:41.:09:45.

landmarks such as Loch Ness and Skara Brae in Orkney, as it tours

:09:46.:09:49.

Scotland. Organisers have unveiled the list of places it will visit, on

:09:50.:09:53.

the final stage of its journey, ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Our

:09:54.:09:56.

Commonwealth Games reporter, Lisa Summers, has more

:09:57.:10:04.

the baton is in the Caribbean, a symbolic invitation from the Queen

:10:05.:10:10.

to the Commonwealth Games. It comes back to the UK in May, crossing into

:10:11.:10:16.

Scotland, and Edinburgh on June 14. We will be having special events at

:10:17.:10:23.

the Meadowbank Stadium, and the Royal Commonwealth pool which is

:10:24.:10:27.

hosting the diving event. And a major concert that evening.

:10:28.:10:33.

Already, children at local schools are taking place -- part. It is

:10:34.:10:43.

exciting because in our country, and we get to see it. Really exciting. I

:10:44.:10:51.

did go and see the Olympic torch. Hopefully I will see the Queen's

:10:52.:10:54.

Baton Relay. The most exciting thing is it is in our home country. From

:10:55.:11:00.

Edinburgh, the baton makes its way to Dumfries and Galloway, Falkirk,

:11:01.:11:07.

Aberdeen and Shetland. It heads back down to Stirling before heading to

:11:08.:11:10.

the western isles, then Orkney, before making its way to Glasgow.

:11:11.:11:20.

The Olympic torch captured the attention before, it is hoped the

:11:21.:11:24.

baton will do the same. Lots of people will get to carry it in lots

:11:25.:11:29.

of locations. It will attract lots of crowds. We will see a greater

:11:30.:11:39.

enthusiasm here. The baton will cross spectacular scenery, Loch

:11:40.:11:44.

Ness, it will visit an oil platform north of Shetland. At the end of

:11:45.:11:48.

this month, 4000 people will find if they have been chosen to carry it

:11:49.:11:50.

and be part of that journey. Well, here on Reporting Scotland,

:11:51.:11:55.

we've been following the Queen's Baton Relay around the world, as it

:11:56.:11:59.

makes its way to Glasgow. And, right now, it's in St Lucia. And Mark

:12:00.:12:02.

Beaumont is there. You're the lucky man travelling around the

:12:03.:12:05.

Commonwealth with the baton. How's that journey been going?

:12:06.:12:14.

It has been a fascinating journey, we have been on the road for five

:12:15.:12:18.

months, starting at Buckingham Palace. First, and to New Delhi in

:12:19.:12:26.

India. Asia, the Pacific, the African continent. And across to the

:12:27.:12:33.

Americas. St Lucia, destination number 47. Then, back to Europe. The

:12:34.:12:40.

excitement of Scotland is what we have been hearing about. And, as the

:12:41.:12:43.

build-up to the Games continues here, in Scotland, what's the

:12:44.:12:48.

reaction been like around the world? The excitement on the ground is

:12:49.:12:53.

visiting schools, meeting as many as possible. The highlights have been

:12:54.:12:56.

meeting the athletes, filming their build-up. Athletes from Botswana,

:12:57.:13:07.

Brunei, untold stories which I am sure we will hear more of in summer.

:13:08.:13:13.

That is the fascinating site, seeing these athletes in action, their

:13:14.:13:20.

reactions. And wonderful scenes of celebration.

:13:21.:13:30.

Health chiefs have closed a ward at Raigmore hospital in Inverness

:13:31.:13:35.

because of an outbreak of the potentially fatal superbug,

:13:36.:13:37.

Clostridium difficile. NHS Highland says the situation is under control

:13:38.:13:40.

but the ward will remain closed to new admissions and transfers while

:13:41.:13:43.

specialist cleaning is carried out. Search teams looking for a walker

:13:44.:13:46.

missing on the Isle of Harris since Saturday say they've found a body.

:13:47.:13:51.

55-year-old Edward Jackson from Preston in Lancashire was on a

:13:52.:13:58.

walking holiday in the area. Police say a formal identification

:13:59.:14:02.

has still to be carried out but his next of kin have been informed.

:14:03.:14:05.

A look at other stories from the across the country.

:14:06.:14:08.

A call for a public inquiry into offshore helicopter safety has been

:14:09.:14:11.

rejected by the UK Transport Minister. Patrick McLoughlin says

:14:12.:14:13.

he's satisfied with the Civil Aviation Authority's review.

:14:14.:14:16.

The Aberdeen MP Frank Doran, who made the request, says he's deeply

:14:17.:14:19.

disappointed. It follows the Fatal Accident Report into the north-sea

:14:20.:14:22.

helicopter crash of 2009, when 16 men died.

:14:23.:14:27.

A man's been charged in connection with a series of mysterious dog

:14:28.:14:30.

thefts from outside supermarkets in Dumfries and Galloway. The animals

:14:31.:14:34.

were taken from one supermarket only to turn up near a different store

:14:35.:14:38.

some time later. A 51-year-old man's been charged and is expected to

:14:39.:14:48.

appear in court at a later date. A buyer is being sought to save

:14:49.:14:53.

Scotland's most southerly distillery. It is owned by a company

:14:54.:14:59.

based in Northern Ireland which has gone into liquidation. The assets

:15:00.:15:03.

are being disposed of by Ernst and Young who see they hope to sell it

:15:04.:15:07.

as a going concern. Police are urging dog owners to keep

:15:08.:15:11.

their pets under control after several incidents of attacks in Fife

:15:12.:15:14.

on members of the public and on sheep. Officers have received

:15:15.:15:17.

several complaints over the last few weeks.

:15:18.:15:19.

The oldest post office in the world is up for sale. Sanquhar Post Office

:15:20.:15:23.

has been in continuous use for 302 years and is the town's biggest

:15:24.:15:28.

claim to fame. But it's feared it could close unless a buyer is found

:15:29.:15:31.

soon, which would mean Stockholm Post Office assuming the title of

:15:32.:15:33.

the world's oldest. What effect could air pollution be

:15:34.:15:43.

having on your health? Scientists in Edinburgh are working on an

:15:44.:15:46.

innovative project to measure just how much pollution we're all exposed

:15:47.:15:50.

to on a daily basis. They're focussing on tiny particles from

:15:51.:15:53.

diesel engines which are linked to heart disease. Our environment

:15:54.:15:55.

correspondent, David Miller, reports.

:15:56.:16:06.

Air pollution affects all of us but how much do we know about its impact

:16:07.:16:15.

on our health? It can provoke pneumonia or asthma or lung

:16:16.:16:19.

problems, but actually kills far more people from heart disease. That

:16:20.:16:24.

is the leading cause of death associated or attributed to air

:16:25.:16:29.

pollution. The main culprits are tiny particles from diesel engines.

:16:30.:16:33.

The greater the exposure of the greater the risk. I'm about to take

:16:34.:16:40.

part in an experiment to measure the threat to my health. This is an

:16:41.:16:45.

American particle counter you can carry about without to much of a

:16:46.:16:54.

burden. Pollution levels are recorded at Rosyth monitoring

:16:55.:16:58.

stations. The Scottish government says it is determined to tackle the

:16:59.:17:03.

problem. It is an issue we take seriously and we have developed

:17:04.:17:08.

monitoring sites and we are using laws to develop strategy at a local

:17:09.:17:15.

level. Unless we see change in transport policy we are not going to

:17:16.:17:19.

see change to the pollution levels in our cities and we will be here

:17:20.:17:27.

and another ten years. Over the last 48 hours, I have travelled by foot,

:17:28.:17:33.

by bike, by bus, by car, by train and by taxi and now it is time to

:17:34.:17:41.

get my results. You walk across Waverley Station

:17:42.:17:45.

onto Princes Street and you can see the peak. My health was at greatest

:17:46.:17:53.

risk while on Princes Street. That underlines the need for more

:17:54.:17:56.

flexible monitoring so what is the way ahead? Using a combination of

:17:57.:18:02.

personal monitors and monitors on buses and trams to get a much better

:18:03.:18:10.

picture of the actual exposure. Understanding more about

:18:11.:18:14.

overexposure air pollution is important but reducing emissions

:18:15.:18:18.

from traffic and congested towns and cities will be vital and that will

:18:19.:18:22.

require more of us to use public transport, walk or cycle.

:18:23.:18:26.

And for tonight's sports news we're back in Aberdeen. Rhona.

:18:27.:18:32.

The place to be tonight. Good evening. The first piece of Scottish

:18:33.:18:35.

football silverware of the season has been claimed by Aberdeen. It

:18:36.:18:38.

took 120 minutes and seven penalties, but eventually the Dons

:18:39.:18:41.

enjoyed that sweet taste of success as they beat Inverness Caley Thistle

:18:42.:18:45.

in yesterday's League Cup Final. And in the Aberdeen boardroom is our

:18:46.:18:55.

reporter Eilidh Barbour. The trophy has not quite made it to

:18:56.:19:00.

the Cabinet at the tawdry just yet, it is on a two of community groups

:19:01.:19:06.

such as the interest in silverware at this club after being starved for

:19:07.:19:12.

almost 20 years. It is a way to the club do not want to endure again and

:19:13.:19:18.

the manager says the time is right to cement themselves as the dominant

:19:19.:19:24.

force once again. Enjoying the taste of victory and a

:19:25.:19:27.

brief glimpse back at the glory days of the club's history, lifting

:19:28.:19:34.

trophies was almost second nature. A long road up to this moment and the

:19:35.:19:40.

chairman has felt every bomb. There is nobody more disappointed than me

:19:41.:19:43.

that it has taken this long to deliver a trophy, but the way we

:19:44.:19:49.

played yesterday was a watershed. We want to see Aberdeen as being

:19:50.:19:57.

competing at the top end on a consistent basis. With joy in

:19:58.:20:05.

football there's also me. Aberdeen gained an advantage they never let

:20:06.:20:07.

go of. Cue the celebrations but what next

:20:08.:20:18.

for the club to ensure more moments like this? As a club, we have got

:20:19.:20:25.

some very substantial challenges in the years ahead but I think we are

:20:26.:20:30.

starting to see a clear way of moving forward. We can drive forward

:20:31.:20:40.

with far greater momentum what a team on the pitch that is the

:20:41.:20:43.

levelling week in and week out bringing the fans back supporting

:20:44.:20:53.

the club. -- delivering. It has been quiet in Aberdeen today as people

:20:54.:20:57.

shake off the indulgences from last night but there could be more to

:20:58.:21:02.

come with the Scottish cup semifinal to look forward to next month, and

:21:03.:21:06.

given the scenes in Glasgow yesterday, they are hungry for

:21:07.:21:08.

more. The Scotland rugby players say they

:21:09.:21:12.

let down the country and head coach Scott Johnson in his final match in

:21:13.:21:15.

charge. The Scots ended a disappointing Six Nations campaign

:21:16.:21:19.

with a record 51 points to three defeat away to Wales. It was their

:21:20.:21:23.

fourth defeat from five matches. Now one former internationalist says a

:21:24.:21:26.

new head coach must spark Scottish rugby into life. Here's Phil

:21:27.:21:38.

Goodlad. It was back to training today but

:21:39.:21:48.

focus may have been a problem. Apart from a couple of halves out of ten,

:21:49.:21:51.

we did not seem to get any progress at all. Saturday was a dark day for

:21:52.:22:00.

Scottish rugby, a record defeat. Following a Rush of blood to the

:22:01.:22:08.

head. That is a red card offence. After that, Wales run riot.

:22:09.:22:18.

Not the way Scott Johnson or his players wanted his time as coach to

:22:19.:22:25.

end. In terms of the way we have been playing, it is a good group of

:22:26.:22:32.

players and we are disappointed. Johnson becomes Scotland's new

:22:33.:22:39.

director of rugby. A winning start is key. June International is, we

:22:40.:22:46.

played ball-mac games and if we get the #ColourWhite wins that will give

:22:47.:22:55.

us a boost. With the new director of rugby starting, 2014 is a massive

:22:56.:23:01.

year for Scottish rugby. After the Six Nations championship, it has not

:23:02.:23:04.

started very well. Now, sticking with rugby and a whole

:23:05.:23:08.

lot more, let's have a look at what else is happening across Scottish

:23:09.:23:09.

sport. Glasgow and Edinburgh rugby could be

:23:10.:23:13.

challenged by a third Scottish pro team if the Chief Executive of

:23:14.:23:16.

Aberdeen Asset Management has his way.

:23:17.:23:18.

Martin Gilbert says he'd love to sponsor a team based in Aberdeen and

:23:19.:23:21.

that "everyone North of Dundee" would support them.

:23:22.:23:26.

Albion Rovers are trying to make history tonight by reaching the

:23:27.:23:29.

Scottish Cup semi final for the first time in 83 years. But standing

:23:30.:23:34.

in their way is Rangers - kick-off for their Cup replay is at 7.45.

:23:35.:23:41.

community groups in Weather now. Aberdeen and will show up soon.

:24:27.:24:32.

A very good evening to you. We have been on the receiving end of some

:24:33.:24:39.

damp conditions coming in from the Atlantic. That will change later on.

:24:40.:24:46.

As far as tonight is concerned, lots of dry weather across the South and

:24:47.:24:51.

East with bits and pieces of rain across the West, but that will

:24:52.:24:56.

become more persistent and spreading across much of western Scotland by

:24:57.:25:02.

morning. It will stay dry in the east and it will be mild and breezy.

:25:03.:25:07.

Tomorrow morning starts on the rather cloudy note with outbreaks of

:25:08.:25:12.

rain in the West. That rain will be persistent and heady but it moves

:25:13.:25:17.

through to the East with many eastern parts predominately dry. It

:25:18.:25:24.

is an improving picture. It will be fairly cloudy towards the Hebrides

:25:25.:25:29.

and the south-west. The wind will be strong to break up the clouds.

:25:30.:25:36.

Spells of sunshine coming through towards Fife and Angus but always

:25:37.:25:42.

the risk of some drizzle and I think we will see some brightness coming

:25:43.:25:48.

through. Mild everywhere and of course breezy with a fresh wind.

:25:49.:25:55.

Orkney and Shetland will continue to see you lean. Towards the evening it

:25:56.:26:01.

will be dry for a tiny man then we start to see outbreaks of rain

:26:02.:26:03.

gathering force across western Scotland. If I can draw your

:26:04.:26:09.

attention to the pressure chart, we can see this weather front

:26:10.:26:13.

introducing rain but as it clears away, we see the introduction of

:26:14.:26:17.

much called earlier across Scotland for Thursday. -- colder air.

:26:18.:26:25.

Starting work across many parts on Wednesday. For the South,

:26:26.:26:31.

predominantly dry with sunshine and is being windy and mild.

:26:32.:26:36.

You had to go and spoil it! Now, a reminder of tonight's main

:26:37.:26:39.

news. New laws are to be brought in to

tackle human trafficking in Scotland. Almost 100 adults and

:26:44.:26:45.

children were smuggled in last year to be used as slaves.

:26:46.:26:48.

America and the European rain have announced sanctions against senior

Russian officials who've backed Ukraine's break-away Crimean region.

:26:52.:26:53.

Today Crimea's parliament has declared its independence and

:26:54.:27:00.

decided to join Russia. And that's Reporting Scotland. I'll

:27:01.:27:03.

be back with the headlines at 8pm and the late bulletin just after the

good evening.
