calls for UN peacekeepers to be sent in. That's all from the BBC News at

Six. Tonight, on Reporting Scotland: The

:00:00.:00:12.

Red Road flats u-turn. Fears about safety and security led Commonwealth

:00:13.:00:14.

Games chiefs to scrap their demolition plans for the opening

:00:15.:00:17.

ceremony. Meanwhile there's just 100 days till

:00:18.:00:30.

the Games begin. A teenager appears in court charged

:00:31.:00:34.

with the murder of a 51-year-old woman and the attempted murder of

:00:35.:00:37.

her elderly partner in their Glasgow home. And this is the medal all the

:00:38.:00:40.

athletes will hope to get their hands on.

:00:41.:00:45.

?11 million over budget and five years late, but Dunfermline's flood

:00:46.:00:48.

prevention scheme is still a long way from completion. We have a

:00:49.:00:52.

special report. And we look back at an historic day

:00:53.:00:56.

for St Johnstone as they made it through to their first ever Scottish

:00:57.:00:58.

Cup final. Good evening. Plans to blow up five

:00:59.:01:19.

Glasgow tower blocks as part of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth

:01:20.:01:22.

Games were scrapped because the organisers fear protestors could

:01:23.:01:24.

threaten safety and security. That was the reason given for the u-turn

:01:25.:01:28.

by the 2014 chief executive today. The decision came just ten days

:01:29.:01:31.

after the idea was first unveiled, by which time more than 17,000

:01:32.:01:34.

people had signed an online petition opposing the plan. Catriona Renton

:01:35.:01:49.

reports. Gone in just 15 seconds. This was the site when one of the

:01:50.:01:53.

Red Road Towers was brought down in the past. The centrepiece of the

:01:54.:01:58.

opening ceremony was to bring five of the remaining six blocks down.

:01:59.:02:04.

But critics launched a petition saying it was insensitive to former

:02:05.:02:08.

residents and asylum seekers who live there. Yesterday organisers

:02:09.:02:13.

announced the plan would be abandoned.

:02:14.:02:18.

We had recommendations from police Scotland that the nature of some of

:02:19.:02:23.

the opposition would make this not a commemorative event but a potential

:02:24.:02:28.

protest. But is this just they way of saving

:02:29.:02:32.

face? Were you more concerned that the protest might be embarrassing?

:02:33.:02:37.

Safety and security with the concerns. From that standpoint, the

:02:38.:02:47.

nature of the risk was something we needed to look at and move forward.

:02:48.:02:54.

The organisers said the demolition would be a commemoration, not a

:02:55.:02:57.

celebration. A sign that Glasgow was moving on. But those whose and the

:02:58.:03:05.

petition -- signed the petition did not agree.

:03:06.:03:12.

Had there been broad public support, I am confident we could have secured

:03:13.:03:16.

the site. But the world is different now. I am pleased, not surprised,

:03:17.:03:24.

but pleased that the organisers are responding to security issues which

:03:25.:03:27.

must be at the heart of their thinking.

:03:28.:03:31.

These flats are a part of the Glasgow skyline. Mixed views amongst

:03:32.:03:37.

locals. They have been here since I was a

:03:38.:03:41.

young girl. I don't want them brought down, they are legendary.

:03:42.:03:47.

I have been looking at them for 40 years, the returning? They have

:03:48.:03:55.

always been an eyesore. One of the men behind the original

:03:56.:04:02.

it told us what he thinks. Glaswegians are proud of their

:04:03.:04:09.

neighbourhoods, and their city. The idea of demolishing flats, as if it

:04:10.:04:14.

was something to celebrate, when people are being evacuated from

:04:15.:04:20.

their homes, it was insensitive. The organisers should be congratulated

:04:21.:04:25.

for recognising that decision. The flats are still going to be

:04:26.:04:28.

demolished, but the eyes of the world will not be on them now.

:04:29.:04:32.

Organisers had been hoping to make the headlines today as they marked

:04:33.:04:36.

100 days to go to that opening ceremony, rather than their u-turn

:04:37.:04:39.

on the Red Road flats. They have also been unveiling the medals they

:04:40.:04:42.

will be handing out to athletes. Our Games reporter Jane Lewis has been

:04:43.:04:47.

getting a look at them. Today is a significant milestone for

:04:48.:04:50.

Glasgow 2014 organisers, and in the last hour here at the Kelvingrove

:04:51.:04:54.

Art Galleries, they will be hoping to put the controversy of the Red

:04:55.:05:02.

Road flats behind them. They have been unveiling the medals and will

:05:03.:05:09.

hope that the focus is on them now. As I say, they have unveiled the

:05:10.:05:16.

medals for the Commonwealth Games. A roomful of specially invited guests.

:05:17.:05:26.

This was a bit more like it. Celebrating the milestone of 100

:05:27.:05:30.

days to go. No controversy, instead, the medals on show. The end product

:05:31.:05:42.

of months of painstaking work by the man charged with designing and also

:05:43.:05:49.

making the medals. Blood sweat and tears has gone into

:05:50.:05:54.

those medals. Just like the way athletes train, going through hell

:05:55.:06:03.

and back, so have we. We were inspired by Glasgow, trying

:06:04.:06:07.

to make something that reflects the industrial past. But something that

:06:08.:06:14.

does not look static. Thinking about athletes, it is all about movement.

:06:15.:06:18.

We wanted something that can be looked upon almost as if it was

:06:19.:06:23.

moving. This man has his fair share of

:06:24.:06:28.

medals. The athletes will not be worrying

:06:29.:06:35.

too much about the press, and the photographs, when the medals are

:06:36.:06:39.

unveiled, because you don't want to focus on the medals before you

:06:40.:06:43.

compete. But once you win it, you're on the podium, the national anthem

:06:44.:06:46.

was playing, there is nothing like it.

:06:47.:06:51.

The only question is, whose neck will the add-on? -- will they adorn?

:06:52.:07:03.

I am joined now by Lord Smith, the Chairman of Glasgow 2014. Before we

:07:04.:07:08.

talk about the medals, it's been a testing day for the Galsgow 2014

:07:09.:07:12.

officials in light of the Red Road flats u-turn, is this an

:07:13.:07:16.

embarrassing change of heart? I would not describe it as a U-turn.

:07:17.:07:20.

You judge people by the solutions they bring. You would not normally

:07:21.:07:27.

consult on a creative thing like an opening and closing ceremony but in

:07:28.:07:31.

this case we absolutely had to, because we were bringing down a

:07:32.:07:36.

building. Glasgow Housing Association were talking to local

:07:37.:07:40.

residents anyway, we want to consult because of the safety and security

:07:41.:07:46.

issue. As the conversation went on it became clear it could turn from a

:07:47.:07:50.

commemoration into a protest and the police contacted us on Friday

:07:51.:07:55.

evening, contacted me, saying, we believe there is a heightened

:07:56.:08:00.

security and safety risk. We said at the outset, if there is a safety

:08:01.:08:04.

risk, we will not go ahead with that. But we'll still quite a lot.

:08:05.:08:11.

It was only 20 seconds of a two our programme. There will still be

:08:12.:08:16.

plenty about the social history of Glasgow. -- two hours. I think the

:08:17.:08:25.

medals are wonderful. There is so much Glasgow craftsmanship. Hints of

:08:26.:08:37.

cranes, cultural icons. It is stunning, and the reaction was very

:08:38.:08:43.

positive. And the uniforms as well. I agree, the medals are absolutely

:08:44.:08:56.

stunning. Back to the studio. A 19-year-old man has appeared in

:08:57.:08:59.

court accused of the murder of Isabelle Sanders from the Crookston

:09:00.:09:02.

area of Glasgow. She was found dead at her home last week. Her partner

:09:03.:09:05.

was seriously injured. Julie Peacock reports. Paul McManus of Govan

:09:06.:09:10.

appeared in private court today, charged with the murder of Isabel

:09:11.:09:15.

Sanders, and the attempted murder of her 85-year-old part, Norman Busby.

:09:16.:09:24.

-- partner. The stabbing to place in the early hours of Tuesday morning

:09:25.:09:28.

in her home in Crookston, shocking the quiet residential area. Norman

:09:29.:09:34.

remains in hospital in a stable condition, he is expected to stay

:09:35.:09:40.

for some time. McManus has also been charged with assault and attempting

:09:41.:09:43.

to steal a car in connection with an earlier incident taken place just a

:09:44.:09:48.

few hundred yards from the home in the hours before the attack. He made

:09:49.:09:53.

no plea or declaration and has been remanded in custody. He will appear

:09:54.:09:59.

in court again next Tuesday. A 20-year-old man has been charged

:10:00.:10:02.

with the murder of William McLachlan in Largs at the weekend. Jamie

:10:03.:10:06.

Cameron made no plea or declaration and has been remanded in custody.

:10:07.:10:09.

19-year-old Jordan Skeoch has also been charged with assault in

:10:10.:10:12.

connection with Mr McLachlan's death. A third man has been released

:10:13.:10:17.

without charge. William McLachlan's body was discovered outside his home

:10:18.:10:21.

in Holehouse road just before seven o'clock on Saturday morning.

:10:22.:10:25.

You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on

:10:26.:10:30.

tonight's programme: Residents in Dunfermline are left waiting and

:10:31.:10:32.

waiting for a flood prevention scheme that's already five years

:10:33.:10:38.

late, and is now in limbo. In sport, St Johnstone look forward

:10:39.:10:41.

to their first Scottish Cup final with new contract talks for their

:10:42.:10:47.

star striker Stevie May. And they call him the fastest man in

:10:48.:10:51.

rugby - he plays for Glasgow Warriors but can the star of the

:10:52.:10:54.

Melrose Sevens sprint into the reckoning in the 15s game? All that

:10:55.:11:03.

and more, coming soon. Aberdeen has seen the largest

:11:04.:11:06.

increase in disposable income in the UK since the credit crunch,

:11:07.:11:09.

according to a study of economic figures. The accountancy group UHY

:11:10.:11:13.

Hacker Young say households in the Granite City have benefited from

:11:14.:11:16.

both the collapse in the UK's mortgage costs, and the oil boom.

:11:17.:11:20.

Steven Duff is in the city for us tonight, good news if you live in

:11:21.:11:28.

Aberdeen then, Steven? This business park behind me is

:11:29.:11:32.

probably testament to that, companies all brand-new moving in.

:11:33.:11:41.

Aberdeen, it has been said, has had a good recession, if there is such a

:11:42.:11:46.

thing. Sheltered by the global oil and gas industry. Aberdeen has

:11:47.:11:51.

topped this list since 2007, before this recession will stop an increase

:11:52.:12:02.

of just over 2800 pounds. Brighton and Belfast were mixed on the list.

:12:03.:12:05.

Glasgow and Edinburgh well down the list. Glasgow had the biggest

:12:06.:12:11.

increase in disposable income, but still more money to play with in

:12:12.:12:18.

Edinburgh. We already know from other surveys that Aberdeen has the

:12:19.:12:22.

highest amount of multi-billionaires than any other part of the country,

:12:23.:12:29.

and more sales of 4x4 vehicles. A sign of wealth.

:12:30.:12:35.

Presumably not everybody has benefited?

:12:36.:12:42.

That's right. The streets are not all paved with gold. Some of the

:12:43.:12:47.

most deprived neighbourhoods in the country. People will look at this

:12:48.:12:52.

survey and say, I'm sorry, that is not he. -- me.

:12:53.:12:59.

Police investigating the death of a 19-year-old woman, after she was

:13:00.:13:03.

taken unwell in a house in Renfrew yesterday evening, believe she may

:13:04.:13:05.

have taken the illegal drug methadrone, known as MCAT. Two other

:13:06.:13:09.

women and two men, aged from 18 to 31, who were also in the house on

:13:10.:13:13.

Paisley Road, are in hospital. Police have warned the public not to

:13:14.:13:17.

take illicit drugs and to stay away from unknown substances.

:13:18.:13:20.

Dunfermline residents say they're worried that the town's troubled

:13:21.:13:23.

flood prevention scheme will cause them years of further disruption.

:13:24.:13:32.

The project is five years late and more than ?11 million over budget.

:13:33.:13:34.

In January, Fife council sacked the building contractor but ahead of a

:13:35.:13:37.

public meeting this week, they said they expect the project to be

:13:38.:13:40.

completed by the end of October. Steven Godden reports. The The aim

:13:41.:13:57.

was simple, to protect homes in Don Bradman from flooding. This was in

:13:58.:14:03.

2007. I understood the whole thing was going to be about two years at

:14:04.:14:11.

the most. It's now 2014 and they still haven't completed it. Roads

:14:12.:14:19.

closed, potholes on the road, bulldozers. Along large stretches of

:14:20.:14:32.

the burn or signs of our project in limbo. The company responsible for

:14:33.:14:39.

building the flood pretty pension scheme was sacked. -- flood

:14:40.:14:50.

prevention. This woman lives close to the scheme. This has always been

:14:51.:15:06.

a fight, a fight about a design that never quite meshed. Constantly

:15:07.:15:13.

having to go backwards and forwards, positions of things wrong,

:15:14.:15:18.

measurements wrong, continuing to go back for clarification and sometimes

:15:19.:15:21.

waiting months for answers. The project designers, Atkins, said they

:15:22.:15:27.

would continue to work with the council. The council and the company

:15:28.:15:35.

declined to be interviewed. The council said they would supervise a

:15:36.:15:41.

new contract, they expect work to begin again in June and be finished

:15:42.:15:48.

by October. I would say not in my lifetime, but I think it will go on

:15:49.:15:53.

for a long time. A public meeting is planned for Wednesday. Those who

:15:54.:15:59.

have grown weary of living in the shadow of the project need

:16:00.:16:08.

convincing that the end is in sight. The UK Defence Secretary has

:16:09.:16:11.

revealed everything is up for grabs in the event of a yes vote in

:16:12.:16:15.

September's referendum. But the Head of the Better Together Campaign

:16:16.:16:18.

Alistair Darling has said this only refers to defence. The Scottish

:16:19.:16:21.

Government says this signals that there will be a currency union in an

:16:22.:16:24.

independent Scotland. Our political correspondent Lucy Adams reports.

:16:25.:16:27.

It is the debate that just won't go away. Like any game of poker, the

:16:28.:16:32.

players are reluctant to show their hand. It means the questions just

:16:33.:16:37.

keep coming. Could an independent Scotland get rid of nuclear weapons?

:16:38.:16:41.

Would it keep the pound and pay is proportion of the UK national debt.

:16:42.:16:49.

Philip Hammond has added further uncertainty. He has told the Herald

:16:50.:16:54.

newspaper that everything is up for grabs in the event of our yes vote.

:16:55.:17:04.

But the UK government has been adamant that it will not negotiate

:17:05.:17:10.

on the pound. The SNP are clear that they would get rid of Trident. But

:17:11.:17:15.

who is bluffing? It makes for confusing reading. Today in Glasgow,

:17:16.:17:23.

Alistair Darling said that Philip Hammond's comments on the apply to

:17:24.:17:26.

defence. Everything about defence will have to be discussed. Not just

:17:27.:17:31.

the question of Trident, but how you split army, the Navy, what you would

:17:32.:17:40.

do in terms of future procurement of supplies. We don't need that risk.

:17:41.:17:46.

The Deputy First Minister said this undermines the UK government's

:17:47.:17:50.

position on currency. Philip Hammond's comments render the

:17:51.:17:56.

currency bluff of the no campaign to nothing more than dust. If nothing

:17:57.:18:02.

is known negotiate will as far as the UK government is concerned, it

:18:03.:18:06.

is not the case that there is no option for currency union. The

:18:07.:18:14.

Scottish government has put forward its proposal. It's not end its gift

:18:15.:18:18.

to say for sure what the outcome would be. It can put forward a case

:18:19.:18:23.

and say it is confident that this will be the outcome, but issues like

:18:24.:18:29.

currency, Trident and energy, all of these things would be matters that

:18:30.:18:33.

would be on the negotiating table. If this were a game of poker, the

:18:34.:18:37.

players would be wise not to show their hand. But people want to know

:18:38.:18:44.

with certainty what is going to happen to the future of their

:18:45.:18:50.

pension, the pound in their back pocket and the safety of their

:18:51.:18:54.

families. Details on these key components are in short supply.

:18:55.:19:01.

A look at other stories from the across the country.

:19:02.:19:04.

Scottish rugby is helping to fund research at Aberdeen University into

:19:05.:19:07.

spinal injuries. Scientists there are believed to be the first in the

:19:08.:19:11.

world to use a combination of methods to try to repair such

:19:12.:19:14.

injuries. The work includes a biodegradable bridge for the spinal

:19:15.:19:20.

cord made of silk fibre. If this kind of therapy comes to

:19:21.:19:24.

fruition, it would only benefit those who are injured playing

:19:25.:19:29.

rugby, but those who are injured worldwide in accidents.

:19:30.:19:34.

Kirkton of Skene in Aberdeenshire has become Scotland's first rural

:19:35.:19:37.

community outside the Highlands and Islands to be connected to superfast

:19:38.:19:40.

broadband. It's part of a project to bring fibre connections to

:19:41.:19:46.

hard-to-reach areas. By the end of 2017, well over 95% of

:19:47.:19:51.

the premises in Scotland will have the ability to access the next

:19:52.:19:56.

generation infrastructure. That is a huge achievement.

:19:57.:20:00.

Nearly 100,000 trees are being planted in the RSPB's Forest Nature

:20:01.:20:03.

Reserve at Abernethy in an attempt to restore the native Caledonian

:20:04.:20:06.

pine forest in Speyside. The aim is to connect the largest single

:20:07.:20:09.

remnant of ancient pine forest to other parts nearby.

:20:10.:20:14.

The Tobermory lifeboat has travelled 90 miles in heavy seas to reach a

:20:15.:20:17.

cargo vessel drifting off the Western Isles. The huge ship lost

:20:18.:20:20.

steering in ten-metre high waves south-west of Tiree at the weekend.

:20:21.:20:24.

Rescue crews had to wait over 24 hours for a tug to arrive from

:20:25.:20:27.

Aberdeen and attach a line to the freighter early this morning.

:20:28.:20:35.

While the focus was on the London Marathon yesterday, a man from Skye

:20:36.:20:38.

ran and walked the equivalent of almost five marathons over the

:20:39.:20:41.

weekend. Despite atrocious weather, Ally K MacPherson completed the 125

:20:42.:20:44.

mile course in 35 hours. Hundreds gathered in Portree to greet him at

:20:45.:20:53.

the end of his challenge. It was just non stop wind and rain,

:20:54.:20:56.

torrential. Blowing a howling gale as well, but we just soldiered on,

:20:57.:21:00.

got our head down, cracked on and got the job done.

:21:01.:21:10.

Time to catch up on tonight's sport with Rhona. Great excitement for all

:21:11.:21:13.

St Johnstone fans everywhere. Some very happy faces yesterday.

:21:14.:21:20.

The St Johnstone manager says talks have already started on a new

:21:21.:21:24.

contract for top scorer Stevie May. It's a reward for his 25 goals so

:21:25.:21:28.

far this season, the last two being particularly significant yesterday

:21:29.:21:30.

as the striker shot his home town into their first ever national cup

:21:31.:21:34.

final. They'll take on Dundee United in a Tayside derby next month for

:21:35.:21:37.

the Scottish Cup. Kheredine Idessane has more.

:21:38.:21:40.

There is nothing like a Scottish cup final to inspire the next

:21:41.:21:44.

generation. It will be fantastic if they win. I think that Saints are

:21:45.:21:50.

the best team ever. It would be really happy. They are into the cup

:21:51.:21:56.

final for the first time. How do you feel about that? Happy. My mum

:21:57.:22:03.

cried. And my dad. Did you cry as well? No.

:22:04.:22:10.

The tactics were spot on. And the man who drew them up is well aware

:22:11.:22:16.

of the emotion he has inspired. There were people at the club last

:22:17.:22:22.

night. People who've never seen them in the Scottish cup final. We have

:22:23.:22:30.

had phone calls this morning, in 91-year-old man saying he was

:22:31.:22:35.

crying. Kings of Scotland used to be crowned near here.

:22:36.:22:39.

They have had a football tour since 1884. In all that time, Saint

:22:40.:22:44.

Johnstone have never reached the Scottish cup final. Very poignant

:22:45.:22:49.

for a family who have had a son and a family as chairman. All I can say

:22:50.:23:04.

is it is a fantastic feeling. And fitting that a local Perth boy got

:23:05.:23:09.

both goals to take St Johnstone into the final.

:23:10.:23:16.

Glasgow Warriors are gathering momentum just at the right time of

:23:17.:23:20.

the season. In the Pro 12, they ended Munsters 13-match unbeaten

streak. It's the first time a Scottish team has won at Thomond

Park ground in six years. Tries from Jonny Gray, Sean Maitland and Josh

:23:27.:23:29.

Strauss put the Warriors into fourth place in the Pro12. And just to put

:23:30.:23:33.

the icing on the cake, the Warriors also claimed the Melrose Sevens'

:23:34.:23:40.

title. Now check the speed of this man.

:23:41.:23:44.

They call Carlin Isles the fastest man in rugby. Very impressive stuff,

:23:45.:23:47.

but we asked a current Scotland international player if he thinks

:23:48.:23:50.

the American can succeed in the 15-a-side game.

:23:51.:23:54.

I think he is quite unique in the sense that he has made for a very

:23:55.:24:00.

good sevens player. He is very quick. But it is a difficult

:24:01.:24:04.

crossover. Some guys do very well, others not so well. There is not as

:24:05.:24:11.

much space on the field. But it will be interesting to see how he gets

:24:12.:24:17.

on. Now, a look at what else is

:24:18.:24:20.

happening across Scottish sport. Scotland's Stephen Gallacher

:24:21.:24:23.

finished six over par in his first ever US Masters, 14 shots off the

:24:24.:24:26.

winner Bubba Watson.. The only other Scot in the field, Sandy Lyle, was

:24:27.:24:30.

nine over, but celebrated a century of rounds in the iconic event.

:24:31.:24:38.

I was told it would be my 100th competitive round in the Masters. I

:24:39.:24:45.

had no idea had gone that far. Two world titles and two world

:24:46.:24:49.

records for Aberdeens Neil Fachie. The Paralympic champion and pilot

:24:50.:24:52.

Peter Mitchell topped the podium twice at the Para-cycling World

:24:53.:24:54.

Championships in Mexico. The world records were the highlights for

:24:55.:25:02.

Fachie. To break the minute barrier for the

:25:03.:25:06.

colour matter, and the ten second barrier, it is something I have

:25:07.:25:10.

always wanted to do. Scotland midfielder Kim Little has

:25:11.:25:13.

impressed on her debut for the American club Seattle Reign. The

:25:14.:25:18.

former Hibs and Arsenal star played just after a nine-hour flight and

:25:19.:25:22.

scored twice in their 3-nil win over Boston Breakers.

:25:23.:25:26.

And there are more sports stories plus all the latest news, 24 hours a

:25:27.:25:35.

day on BBC Sport Scotland's website. That is it for tonight.

:25:36.:25:43.

Now to the weather. Good evening. It has been a

:25:44.:25:47.

beautiful day across the country. We saw some lovely sunshine across the

:25:48.:25:52.

country. It was pleasant in the sunshine as the sun started to get

:25:53.:25:58.

that bit warmer. As we head into the evening, we hold onto the clear

:25:59.:26:04.

skies saw temperatures dropping away quite quickly and leading to a frost

:26:05.:26:10.

in some parts of the country. Temperatures two or three Celsius

:26:11.:26:16.

across most of the country. Lord perhaps in the Grampians. -- lower.

:26:17.:26:26.

Tomorrow, we hold on to the drier conditions. Good spells of sunshine.

:26:27.:26:34.

Very similar to the day we saw today. Lots of sunshine and

:26:35.:26:45.

respectable temperatures. We could be looking at 14-15 Celsius. Holding

:26:46.:26:50.

on to the sunny conditions as we head further north as well. Plenty

:26:51.:26:54.

of sunshine across more northern parts. But we will see more in the

:26:55.:26:59.

way of cloud coming into the Northwest. A fine day to come for

:27:00.:27:11.

the Northern Isles. As we head into the evening, very little changes.

:27:12.:27:18.

Plenty of sunshine, and any light cloud will not spoil the day. The

:27:19.:27:24.

wind starting to freshen up across the Hebrides by the end of the

:27:25.:27:27.

evening. The high-pressure starts to move away, introducing this weather

:27:28.:27:34.

front on Wednesday, bringing some rain. But across southern and

:27:35.:27:42.

eastern Scotland, dry and sunny. Thank you.

:27:43.:27:48.

Now, a reminder of tonight's main news.

:27:49.:27:53.

The chief executive of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games said that plan

protesters could threaten safety and security. And that's Reporting
