Glasgow's School Of Art. Students made their escape as flames ripped | :00:00. | :00:22.
through Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterpiece, destroying parts of the | :00:23. | :00:26.
building and artworks inside. Terrified. So much work is in there. | :00:27. | :00:38.
The extent of the damage at this point I could not describe. | :00:39. | :00:43.
Firefighters have been tackling the blaze since lunchtime and there are | :00:44. | :00:48.
no reports of any injuries. Also, who owns Scotland? No | :00:49. | :00:54.
restrictions on land ownership are proposed in a Government backed | :00:55. | :00:57.
study. Detectives in Edinburgh are hunting | :00:58. | :01:03.
a gang of this targeting tourists by posing as police officers. | :01:04. | :01:06.
And in Lennon tells us he's stepping out into the unknown. -- Neil | :01:07. | :01:11.
Lennon. Glasgow's School of Art has suffered | :01:12. | :01:29.
significant damage after fire blazed through the building. No one was | :01:30. | :01:33.
hurt. Fire crews are still on the scene and will be many hours to come | :01:34. | :01:39.
as a damp down the flames. -- as they. | :01:40. | :01:47.
As you can see, many streets are still sealed off. Firefighters still | :01:48. | :01:51.
working away. There are three aerial rescue pumps working. The building | :01:52. | :02:02.
on the left, and the new building, the extension, both buildings | :02:03. | :02:05.
completely packed when the fire broke out. | :02:06. | :02:13.
It is a site which gathered crowds, but no one wanted to see this. | :02:14. | :02:18.
One of the's most famous buildings up in flames. -- world's. | :02:19. | :02:32.
There has been significant spread. The extent of the damage at this | :02:33. | :02:40.
point, I could not describe. The alarm went off and we got | :02:41. | :02:45.
evacuated, it was thick smoke everywhere. I smelt smoke and then | :02:46. | :02:51.
we noticed that smoke was billowing out from the East. We could see it | :02:52. | :02:58.
coming out from the windows next to the library. It is unique, a working | :02:59. | :03:06.
art school and a work of art. From the facade to the fixtures and | :03:07. | :03:11.
fittings, every detail shows the craft of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. | :03:12. | :03:14.
News of its damage has shocked people around the world. | :03:15. | :03:21.
Devastating. The building has always been classed as his masterpiece. It | :03:22. | :03:25.
is not just unique for Glasgow and Scotland, but for the world. | :03:26. | :03:30.
Students are spread across both buildings. Many were making work for | :03:31. | :03:38.
their end of year degree shows and had to abandon the work when the | :03:39. | :03:43.
fire started. For years worth of work. All gone. Tonight, as the fire | :03:44. | :03:52.
continues to burn, statements of sympathy and support have been | :03:53. | :04:04.
pouring in. It should have been a day of | :04:05. | :04:07.
celebration for Glasgow School of Art as last night the sister | :04:08. | :04:12.
building one in major architectural prize. Instead, it has become one of | :04:13. | :04:16.
the bleakest and darkest day in the art school's history, particularly | :04:17. | :04:21.
for those who hold this place dear and who did study here, including | :04:22. | :04:24.
the current chair of Glasgow School of Art who I spoke earlier. It is | :04:25. | :04:32.
our worst nightmare. At this moment, the positive thing is that everybody | :04:33. | :04:41.
is safe. Have been no casualties. The fire services got here quickly, | :04:42. | :04:47.
they cleared the site. I think the thing to keep close to a heart is | :04:48. | :04:53.
that it is a building, and it is the people that are in it is the people | :04:54. | :04:59.
that are limits. The other thing is that it is not an order of no | :05:00. | :05:02.
building or an ordinary art school, it is a work of art. One of the most | :05:03. | :05:08.
famous buildings in the world, it is exquisite. Today, you realise it is | :05:09. | :05:16.
November building, it is the people that are in it. Everybody has turned | :05:17. | :05:25.
up. -- more than a building. Everybody is supporting each other. | :05:26. | :05:32.
We talked about the fact that this is a Mackintosh artwork, but also a | :05:33. | :05:40.
working art school so full of the current students' work. We don't | :05:41. | :05:46.
want to speculate about that just now. It was the last hand in before | :05:47. | :05:50.
the degree show busy -- this morning. We don't know. We don't | :05:51. | :05:57.
want to break anyone's heart before we know the extent of the damage. It | :05:58. | :06:04.
couldn't be at a worse time, frankly. Where do you go from here? | :06:05. | :06:11.
We will have to assess the damage and once the fire has been put under | :06:12. | :06:15.
control will have a big conversation with the fire service. We will take | :06:16. | :06:22.
it from there. It is a double blow, really. We made a great stuff at | :06:23. | :06:33.
Glasgow School of Art. -- are made. There was a real sense of relief | :06:34. | :06:37.
that no one has been hurt and a sense of sadness from everyone | :06:38. | :06:44.
around here that something like this has happened to a building that is | :06:45. | :06:49.
so iconic and so important not just to Scotland, but right across | :06:50. | :06:53.
Europe. There is a real sense of solidarity from people offering to | :06:54. | :06:57.
help in whatever way they can, and saying, let's see what we can do. It | :06:58. | :07:03.
is too early to tell what the scale of the damages, we are already | :07:04. | :07:06.
hearing news that some of the from the Glasgow School of Art have been | :07:07. | :07:18.
saved and been rescued. We have an update later in the | :07:19. | :07:25.
programme. Sweeping changes to the system of | :07:26. | :07:29.
land ownership in Scotland have been proposed by a group set up by the | :07:30. | :07:32.
Scottish Government to steady land reform. It is calling for a new | :07:33. | :07:36.
limit on the amount of land that can be held by an individual landowner. | :07:37. | :07:45.
Scotland's landscape, it is dominated by large, traditional | :07:46. | :07:49.
estates, but is that set to change? The review group says it should. | :07:50. | :07:54.
Land is a finite resource, it is very important. Decisions about how | :07:55. | :08:01.
it is owned and used have to be taken in the public interest. | :08:02. | :08:06.
Ministers here at Hollywood are facing calls to create more | :08:07. | :08:13.
transparent system. More of us can then work out who owns Scotland. | :08:14. | :08:17.
There are calls for wholesale changes to the tax system. | :08:18. | :08:24.
The aim is to make it easier for communities and rule and urban | :08:25. | :08:33.
Scotland to own their own land. I'm happy with a sense of direction. | :08:34. | :08:45.
These changes could affect urban and rule Scotland. In our cities, | :08:46. | :08:50.
communities could take control of derelict land. Campaigners argue it | :08:51. | :08:55.
is time for the Scottish Government to push ahead with land reform. The | :08:56. | :09:02.
vast recommendation is within... There's no excuse not to make | :09:03. | :09:07.
progress on these recommendations within the next five years. | :09:08. | :09:12.
Landowners are dismaying, they have long argued how the land is used | :09:13. | :09:18.
rather than who owns it. The focus is on land scale, not appropriate | :09:19. | :09:25.
use. This report is not just about large estates, this report will | :09:26. | :09:30.
impact on anyone who owns land property. Change is coming and it | :09:31. | :09:34.
may be sooner and more radical than expected. | :09:35. | :09:42.
It group of leading academics say they have grave concerns that | :09:43. | :09:46.
independence would jeopardise vital medical research. 14 professors from | :09:47. | :09:51.
all five medical schools are led by the Queen's former surgeon Doctor | :09:52. | :09:55.
David Carter. The Scottish Government says ground-breaking | :09:56. | :09:58.
medical research would continue in independent Scotland. | :09:59. | :10:06.
This row has hit the headlines because of the names on this letter | :10:07. | :10:09.
and the importance of their work. The 14 professors have made a huge | :10:10. | :10:15.
role in medical research and they are concerned. Around ?1 billion in | :10:16. | :10:19.
research grants come to Scotland each year and a quarter of that | :10:20. | :10:23.
comes from the UK research Council, to put that in perspective this | :10:24. | :10:31.
group claims around one third of Edinburgh University's total | :10:32. | :10:33.
research income came from this part of money. | :10:34. | :10:38.
Many also comes from UK charities and partnerships and in recent years | :10:39. | :10:41.
has gone on to help build new institutes. | :10:42. | :10:47.
Doctor David Carter is the former chief medical officer of Scotland | :10:48. | :10:54.
and the Queen's former surgeon. It is important the public know how | :10:55. | :10:57.
well we do and where we get the money from. We thought it important | :10:58. | :11:02.
to express concerns about some of the funding streams. Would you be | :11:03. | :11:09.
able to continue to fish in the big pool that the UK common research | :11:10. | :11:13.
area allows us to fish in? The SNP's plan would continue a | :11:14. | :11:25.
cross-border approach. The group of academics say this would be fraught | :11:26. | :11:29.
with difficulty and success would be unlikely. The pro-independence group | :11:30. | :11:34.
says independence would benefit our medical research. They have | :11:35. | :11:39.
underestimated the real cuts that are happening in British research. A | :11:40. | :11:46.
reduction of up to 20% over these five years which is over ?1 billion. | :11:47. | :11:54.
To talk about the impact on Scotland independence within that context | :11:55. | :11:56.
really seems to be missing the point. Getting further reaction is | :11:57. | :12:04.
difficult, many of those who govern the universities are remaining | :12:05. | :12:08.
neutral, and this is one reason this group of academics say they have | :12:09. | :12:14.
decided to speak out. Detectives in Edinburgh are hunting | :12:15. | :12:16.
a gang of thieves who have been targeting terrorists by posing as | :12:17. | :12:21.
police officers. More than ten thefts have taken place in the last | :12:22. | :12:25.
three weeks. A sure sign that summer is | :12:26. | :12:30.
approaching, Edinburgh's Royal Mile bustling with tourists. In recent | :12:31. | :12:35.
weeks, some have been the target of thieves, a gang posing as police | :12:36. | :12:40.
officers who are struck more than ten times. Their most recent success | :12:41. | :12:46.
was here. The theft here is typical of how this gang have been | :12:47. | :12:50.
operating, it began with one of the group approaching two tourists, a | :12:51. | :12:54.
mother and daughter from Chile, and asking them to take a photograph. | :12:55. | :12:58.
When his two compasses arrived claiming to be police officers, they | :12:59. | :13:03.
first searches back before moving on to the tourist' back and making off | :13:04. | :13:09.
with more than ?1000. -- accomplices. There are out there. I | :13:10. | :13:14.
would like people who would be members of the public to come | :13:15. | :13:19.
forward if they see anything suspicious. Earlier, a gang -- and | :13:20. | :13:22.
the gang attempted another theft. Edinburgh is a city with a | :13:23. | :13:33.
reputation for being welcoming and safe. Yes, you have to be careful, | :13:34. | :13:42.
be safe. But I am glad we came. Yet I live in New York. It seems pretty | :13:43. | :13:54.
safe here. An unwelcome presence on the capital's street, the real | :13:55. | :13:57.
police want the public's help to catch the bogus police. | :13:58. | :14:08.
Other stories: A suspicious powder discovered aboard a North Sea oil | :14:09. | :14:11.
platform has been revealed to be an over-the-counter medicine. Workers | :14:12. | :14:15.
on this platform where tested earlier this week after police were | :14:16. | :14:22.
called in when did package was discovered. Lab tests have revealed | :14:23. | :14:28.
it was crushed pain relief pills. Campaigners opposed to speed cameras | :14:29. | :14:32.
on the A9 have rejected a private meeting with the A9 safety group and | :14:33. | :14:37.
has said any discussions should be done in public. The head of the | :14:38. | :14:41.
petitions committee had set the meeting after voting it could go no | :14:42. | :14:44.
further with the addition against the ?2.5 million scheme to install | :14:45. | :14:50.
speed cameras on the Perth to Inverness section of the A9. | :14:51. | :14:56.
It has been billed as Scotland's Premier open studios art and Craft | :14:57. | :15:01.
event. Spring Flying takes place this bank holiday weekend and will | :15:02. | :15:06.
bring ?1 million into the economy of the region. Organisers say it brings | :15:07. | :15:13.
huge benefit to the 95 studios and artists involved. It is hugely | :15:14. | :15:18.
important. I will make more than these three days than in the rest of | :15:19. | :15:24.
the year put together. It pushes each artist forward to try and | :15:25. | :15:28.
develop and improve from one year to the next. | :15:29. | :15:33.
Time for the latest sports news. Neil Lennon says he has not lined up | :15:34. | :15:39.
a new job but knows he made the correct decision to leave Celtic. | :15:40. | :15:43.
The Scottish champions have begun to look for the person to replace him | :15:44. | :15:48.
as manager. Who might that be? Alisdair Lamont has the latest. It | :15:49. | :15:53.
was another day of departure is for Celtic. This time there in 1967 | :15:54. | :15:59.
European Cup winning team set off to the scene of the greatest triumph | :16:00. | :16:04.
and a more recent club people joined them. It will not properly sink in | :16:05. | :16:08.
for a little while, it will take some time to digest this decision. I | :16:09. | :16:15.
am content with my decision. Do you think you will be heading to the | :16:16. | :16:51.
premiership? I have not given any thought to that at the moment. So as | :16:52. | :16:52.
Neil Lennon considers his own future, who will Celtic look for in | :16:53. | :16:53.
a replacement? You need to know a little bit about what is going on | :16:54. | :16:55.
and if you come from the outside, it is different, you have to adapt and | :16:56. | :16:57.
that will be related difficult because you do not get time as the | :16:58. | :16:57.
manager of Celtic to adapt and that is why it needs to be someone with a | :16:58. | :16:58.
background and history of Celtic. There are plenty of candidates. | :16:59. | :16:59.
People like Malky Mackay or David Moyes. Owen Coyle is another | :17:00. | :17:10.
possibility. What about fans favourite Henrik Larsson. Falkenberg | :17:11. | :17:16.
said he will not leave them this season. I do not think Henrik | :17:17. | :17:23.
Larsson is ready yet. They are looking for someone who is a good | :17:24. | :17:29.
manager but also a good coach. Peter Wall and the Celtic board are trying | :17:30. | :17:32.
to identify that man. Then they have to secure his services. -- Peter | :17:33. | :17:40.
Wall. She will be present at the | :17:41. | :17:50.
Commonwealth Games. Lynsey Sharp has not met the qualifying time for the | :17:51. | :18:06.
800s. She has three more races in which to do so but as our Games | :18:07. | :18:40.
reporter has been finding out, she remains confident of making the | :18:41. | :18:53.
Commonwealth Games. She is confident of tying up her Scott -- spot in the | :18:54. | :19:02.
team Scotland after battling back from injury. Last weekend she was | :19:03. | :19:13.
one seconds short of the required time but she will try again | :19:14. | :19:17.
tomorrow. It does not sound like a lot of difference to make up but I | :19:18. | :19:20.
was struggling last weekend and the 200 metres, an event I do not | :19:21. | :19:22.
usually do, so hopefully I will perform better. 2012 was a | :19:23. | :19:23.
successful one for sharp. She got a gold-medal after her Russian | :19:24. | :19:26.
competitor failed a doping test. She remained sidelined last year | :19:27. | :19:27.
following surgery on a tendon in her leg. She is getting shape and is | :19:28. | :19:29.
desperate to make the Commonwealth Games. It is so unique to be in this | :19:30. | :19:32.
court -- sport. It is a dream time to be involved and represent my | :19:33. | :19:34.
country and Glasgow. It looks like an athletic Stadium rather than a | :19:35. | :19:35.
football stadium. She has until the 8th of June to run | :19:36. | :19:37.
the qualifying time for the 800s. She is buying a place in the four by | :19:38. | :19:39.
400m release quotes. The rest of the news now. | :19:40. | :19:41.
Andy Murray has spoken to the person he wants as his new coach but he is | :19:42. | :19:43.
not saying who it is. He is preparing for the French Open. | :19:44. | :19:44.
Hibernian take a 2-0 lead in a place for next year 's premiership. The | :19:45. | :19:46.
manager says the words to their fans to make sure they finish the job. | :19:47. | :19:49.
The crowd backed us enormously. They argued to their word. When you have | :19:50. | :19:54.
that support behind you, it is fantastic. | :19:55. | :19:59.
St Johnstone are not renewing the contracts of three of their cup | :20:00. | :20:05.
winning squad. Chris alumina, Paddy Craig are amongst those not | :20:06. | :20:10.
receiving new contracts. Come and's Assistant Manager Sandy | :20:11. | :20:12.
Clark is parting company with the club. | :20:13. | :20:20.
You can read all about Celtic's search for a new manager on our | :20:21. | :20:26.
website. It is a Big Weekend for music lovers | :20:27. | :20:31.
across Scotland with two music festivals under way. BBC Radio 1's | :20:32. | :20:36.
Big Weekend takes place in Glasgow said the centre. Andrew Anderson is | :20:37. | :20:45.
rocking all over Montrose firstly. Good evening from Montrose and good | :20:46. | :20:49.
evening from the Montrose Music Festival. 4000 fans beginning to | :20:50. | :20:56.
gather for status quo. They are legends and the headline act. | :20:57. | :21:02.
Tonight they are blocking Montrose. I caught up with them earlier. They | :21:03. | :21:09.
gave the interview to us and told me about the set they will be playing. | :21:10. | :21:12.
We will do Pink Floyd tonight because we are fed up of our own | :21:13. | :21:21.
music! I prefer them to what we do! My nose is growing! We do most of | :21:22. | :21:28.
the big hits that people expect from us. We are trying to give them our | :21:29. | :21:39.
new music. Tell us to play in the hits. The excitement is building, a | :21:40. | :21:45.
Big Weekend of free music, 200 or so gigs at 20 venues around Montrose. | :21:46. | :21:55.
This festival has grown hugely since its conception in 2008. It is not | :21:56. | :22:01.
the only event in Scotland this weekend, the Big Weekend is also | :22:02. | :22:04.
taking place in Glasgow. It is a very loud weekend here and George | :22:05. | :22:09.
Square. Radio 1's DJs are warming up the crowd. 15,000 people are | :22:10. | :22:19.
expected here to see the top dance acts and the world. Over the next 48 | :22:20. | :22:33.
hours anyone who is anyone is coming to Glasgow. One Direction, Coldplay, | :22:34. | :22:44.
Calvin Harris, Katy Perry, the list goes on. The tickets were snapped up | :22:45. | :22:55.
in less than one hour. There has been some disruption around tonight | :22:56. | :22:56.
at but it is estimated that these events are both ?3.5 million to the | :22:57. | :23:00.
bars and restaurants. If you do not have a ticket, do not try and get | :23:01. | :23:02.
in, you will only be disappointed. I am hopeful it will remain dry for | :23:03. | :23:17.
Montrose this evening. There is a bit of rain for the Borders. As I | :23:18. | :23:26.
mentioned, lots of events. We have the Big Weekend in Glasgow on | :23:27. | :23:32.
Saturday. It will be a cloudy start with sunny spells by the afternoon. | :23:33. | :23:36.
Remember and pack your umbrella, you could see one or two heavy showers. | :23:37. | :23:44.
If you are looking for the ceiling, it is the 40th year of this sailing | :23:45. | :23:49.
event. Sunny spells should be present. On Sunday they could see | :23:50. | :23:56.
one or two showers. Winds at a forced three. Not that great for the | :23:57. | :24:05.
sailors. One or two showers for this evening. Especially for the Solway | :24:06. | :24:16.
coast. Misty patches and sea fog could develop. Temperatures dipping | :24:17. | :24:18.
to eight or nine Celsius. Cooler in rural spots. Towards the West on | :24:19. | :24:27.
Saturday morning we will see some brightness, and that will continue | :24:28. | :24:31.
for the afternoon. Showers for Dumfries and Galloway. Staying | :24:32. | :24:37.
unsettled for the Borders. Average temperatures around 15 or 16 Celsius | :24:38. | :24:41.
but slightly lower in the East at 12 Celsius. If you are planning outdoor | :24:42. | :24:47.
activities, for the North West Highlands it will be a cloudy start | :24:48. | :24:50.
and there could be some showers later. Brighter skies for Argyle. | :24:51. | :25:03.
Showers for the Cairngorms. Out at sea, for Loch Ewe fine and the Mull | :25:04. | :25:13.
of Kintyre, winds only at a forced three or forced forward. A low | :25:14. | :25:20.
pressure is never too far away this weekend. For Sunday we are looking | :25:21. | :25:24.
at the weather system pushing and with showers to end the day on | :25:25. | :25:31.
Sunday. We are going to see a few showers and some of them could be | :25:32. | :25:34.
heavy and thundery and it is a similar story for Bank Holiday | :25:35. | :25:38.
Monday. Increasingly a risk of showers. | :25:39. | :25:43.
Let us go back to Pauline McLean for an update on the fire at the Glasgow | :25:44. | :25:50.
School of Art. We have seen a few of the fire engines leaving. They are | :25:51. | :25:54.
beginning to scale down the operation. There are plenty of | :25:55. | :25:59.
firefighters inside and outside of the building and they are expected | :26:00. | :26:03.
to be here for some time. Not the drama and dramatic pictures that we | :26:04. | :26:07.
saw earlier of the flames at the top of the building with smoke billowing | :26:08. | :26:11.
throughout the city centre. Neil Baxter, a local architect joins me. | :26:12. | :26:19.
A very sad day. Desperately sad for Glasgow, architecture and the whole | :26:20. | :26:25.
of Scotland. We have lost one of our greatest architectural and artistic | :26:26. | :26:28.
masterpieces. I spoke to a friend in Barcelona this afternoon when I | :26:29. | :26:34.
commented that this was probably the greatest building in Scotland he | :26:35. | :26:38.
said it was the greatest in Europe and it has been largely destroyed | :26:39. | :26:42.
today. Desperately sad. What has been interesting because of social | :26:43. | :26:47.
media is just how shocked people have been on the other side of the | :26:48. | :26:52.
world. People have been crying in the streets of Glasgow and that | :26:53. | :26:58.
sentiment has gone throughout the world and I think Charles Rennie | :26:59. | :27:01.
Mackintosh's the genius, we have lost the ultimate expression of that | :27:02. | :27:06.
genius and the art school Library and it is a tragic event. It is | :27:07. | :27:12.
appalling. We are still waiting to hear more news this evening as to | :27:13. | :27:17.
what can be said and what will happen next. There seems to be | :27:18. | :27:22.
extensive damage but we are also hearing that some items perhaps from | :27:23. | :27:27.
the museum have been salvaged. We will wait to hear much more about | :27:28. | :27:31.
it. A very sad day not just for Glasgow but across Scotland. Thank | :27:32. | :27:38.
you, Pauline McLean. Join us again at 8pm. Goodbye. | :27:39. | :27:44. |
