Gamblers in Scotland's biggest city are betting more than ?200 million | :00:00. | :00:11.
Graduating with honours: Students give a standing ovation to the | :00:12. | :00:30.
firefighters who fought the blaze at Glasgow's School of art. | :00:31. | :00:34.
It was the graduation week the week of the fire, so we were extremely | :00:35. | :00:38.
sympathetic to the students, but to be here today and receive an honour | :00:39. | :00:42.
in metal is absolutely as standing. Also: He will be the first Briton to | :00:43. | :00:48.
defend the men's singles title at Wimbledon and 78 years. Be assessing | :00:49. | :00:52.
Andy Murraychances. And join me here live on the Isle of | :00:53. | :00:58.
May in the Firth of Forth, and discover what is being done to in | :00:59. | :01:01.
courage more of us to visit this extraordinary place this summer. | :01:02. | :01:28.
are betting more than ?200 million a year on gambling machines. | :01:29. | :01:32.
And an investigation's found more than half a million pounds a day is | :01:33. | :01:35.
being spent on so-called "fixed odds betting terminals" in Glasgow. | :01:36. | :01:38.
The council wants new powers to help tackle the problem. | :01:39. | :01:40.
Tonight the Scottish Government confirmed it is set to act | :01:41. | :01:42.
on concerns about the number of betting shops in some | :01:43. | :01:45.
Here's our local government correspondent Jamie McIvor. | :01:46. | :01:49.
They have been called supercharged fruit machines, the crack cocaine of | :01:50. | :01:55.
gambling. The pay-outs can be big, but so are the stakes, to ?100. | :01:56. | :02:00.
People with a gambling problem, to be able to spend ?100 every 20 | :02:01. | :02:05.
seconds, you know, ?300 a minute, that becomes ludicrous to think that | :02:06. | :02:11.
someone would do that, but there are compulsive gamblers. People with a | :02:12. | :02:15.
gambling problem, who just have a control. Glasgow council has been | :02:16. | :02:20.
researching the impact of fixed odds machines. It reckons people in the | :02:21. | :02:25.
city may be losing ?31 million a year on them. The evidence here in | :02:26. | :02:30.
Glasgow is that people are actually gambling, on average, ?12 on the | :02:31. | :02:35.
press of a button every 35 seconds. You can see how people could get | :02:36. | :02:39.
into difficulties very quickly. One of the concerns of the council is | :02:40. | :02:42.
the number of betting shops in some areas, possibly making it worse for | :02:43. | :02:46.
people with a gambling problem. This is one of the busiest streets in the | :02:47. | :02:50.
centre of Glasgow, and within a few feet of each other here, there are | :02:51. | :02:55.
one, two, three, four High St betting shops, and the council wants | :02:56. | :02:59.
power from the Scottish Government to try to stop more clusters like | :03:00. | :03:02.
this from building up, either in the city centre or anywhere else. One | :03:03. | :03:06.
High St betting chain has reservations about some of | :03:07. | :03:11.
Glasgow's research, but insists it wants to tackle problem gambling of | :03:12. | :03:15.
any sort. There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that machines | :03:16. | :03:18.
are any more less addictive than any other gambling product, and | :03:19. | :03:26.
Ladbrokes' view is that we prefer to focus on helping those customers who | :03:27. | :03:29.
present themselves to as is having a potential problem. We see our role | :03:30. | :03:33.
as helping customers to help themselves. Tonight, the Scottish | :03:34. | :03:37.
Government told the BBC it has listen to concerns a number of | :03:38. | :03:40.
betting shops and will respond to them in a new planning policy | :03:41. | :03:41.
shortly. There's renewed controversy tonight | :03:42. | :03:43.
over the costs of setting up The Scottish government has | :03:44. | :03:46.
advertised internally for staff to work on | :03:47. | :03:49.
the transition to independence. Critics say it's a rushed move | :03:50. | :03:51.
after the recent row. But Ministers insist | :03:52. | :03:54.
it's prudent planning. This from our political editor | :03:55. | :03:56.
Brian Taylor. Yesterday and for the past | :03:57. | :04:07.
fortnight, opposition leaders have demanded to know the cost of setting | :04:08. | :04:12.
up a new state. Is he going to give the answer key macro Alex Salmond | :04:13. | :04:16.
said he ready had, in the White Paper. There is no precise sum, and | :04:17. | :04:21.
ministers say that depends on how UK assets are carved up. It emerged | :04:22. | :04:25.
today that the Scottish Government has internally advertised to civil | :04:26. | :04:29.
service jobs, one dealing with the transition to independence, assuring | :04:30. | :04:32.
and collating information on financial aspects of constitutional | :04:33. | :04:37.
change. The second involves researching and locating asset | :04:38. | :04:41.
registers of public sector bodies, analysing bodies' financial | :04:42. | :04:45.
accounts, and drawing together information on assets and | :04:46. | :04:48.
liabilities. The adverts are clear. They are people to work out how much | :04:49. | :04:53.
it will cost from going to being part of the UK to being an | :04:54. | :04:56.
independent and separate country. At any point in the last seven years, | :04:57. | :05:00.
this SNP government whose stated aim is independence could and should | :05:01. | :05:03.
have done this work, and the people of Scotland should know how much | :05:04. | :05:06.
independence is going to cost them. Instead, we have panic measures out | :05:07. | :05:10.
today, which point to shambles at the heart of the Scottish | :05:11. | :05:13.
Government. Ministers say the jobs are about preparing for independence | :05:14. | :05:17.
after a yes vote, and claim their critics are simply trying to deflect | :05:18. | :05:27.
attention from exaggerated cost estimates by the Treasury. This is | :05:28. | :05:29.
prudent planning. In the event of a yes vote, we will need a transition | :05:30. | :05:32.
team. These are internal appointments to establish a small | :05:33. | :05:34.
team ready for the transition that will take place, so it is a | :05:35. | :05:38.
transition team, internal appointments, and I think Better | :05:39. | :05:41.
Together are getting overexcited and should possibly pay a bit more | :05:42. | :05:45.
attention to the comments of the permanent Secretary about the | :05:46. | :05:48.
Treasury's figures, rather than criticising anybody else. This | :05:49. | :05:53.
controversy may persist, but ministers resolutely deny they are | :05:54. | :05:54.
trying to keep any costs secret. Students who lost work | :05:55. | :05:57.
in the recent fire at Glasgow School Around a third of the 102 fine art | :05:58. | :06:00.
students lost their work in the fire which swept through the | :06:01. | :06:04.
Mackintosh building four weeks ago. But today they celebrated their | :06:05. | :06:07.
achievements, as well as honouring the firefighters who fought to save | :06:08. | :06:10.
the building and its contents. Our arts correspondent | :06:11. | :06:12.
Pauline McLean reports. For weeks on from the darkest day in | :06:13. | :06:26.
Glasgow School of Art's history, and a much more joyful gathering. Hannah | :06:27. | :06:33.
Blackwell. Among those graduating today, 102 fine art students who had | :06:34. | :06:38.
to abandon their studios and four years' work when the fire broke out. | :06:39. | :06:44.
It was bittersweet for Alec, who won the top award for his year, despite | :06:45. | :06:49.
losing all his work in the fire. Pretty much everything, but | :06:50. | :06:54.
something good has come of it, so that is a huge positive, I think, | :06:55. | :06:57.
despite everything that has happened. We all graduated on the | :06:58. | :07:01.
day we were suppose to graduate, and everything has gone ahead, so that | :07:02. | :07:05.
is very pleasing. The new Barry Medel is named after the founder of | :07:06. | :07:09.
the school, the man who commissioned McIntosh to build on the first | :07:10. | :07:13.
place. This is to honour the bravest act for which Glasgow School of Art | :07:14. | :07:18.
will always be thankful. It was apt that a second medal was awarded to | :07:19. | :07:23.
those who helped save it. The flow of gratitude to us has taken us by | :07:24. | :07:27.
surprise. This is a culmination of all the accolades, to be invited to | :07:28. | :07:31.
the actual graduation day, and the week of the fire was the graduation | :07:32. | :07:35.
week, so we were extremely sympathetic. But to be here today | :07:36. | :07:39.
and receive an honorary medal is absolutely outstanding. Now, | :07:40. | :07:43.
thoughts turn to rebuilding both the students' work and the building | :07:44. | :07:47.
itself, and some high-profile names are already backing the appeal. I | :07:48. | :07:51.
was at Art School with Peter Capaldi, so that was easy! And we | :07:52. | :07:59.
knew Brad Pitt was a huge Macintosh fan, and a friend of a friend, so we | :08:00. | :08:03.
grovelled. We did not have to grovel very much, we phoned him up and he | :08:04. | :08:08.
said yes immediately. Graduation day is normally the end of studies at | :08:09. | :08:12.
any school, but for the class of 2014, this is just beginning. Many | :08:13. | :08:16.
fine art students will return in the next term to recreate the work they | :08:17. | :08:21.
lost in the fire, and almost all of them are expected to return for a | :08:22. | :08:23.
special degree show next spring. You're watching Reporting Scotland | :08:24. | :08:26.
from the BBC. Still to come | :08:27. | :08:27.
on tonight's programme: The Queen's Commonwealth Baton | :08:28. | :08:29.
relay continues its Odyssey. In sport, we talk to Andy Murray | :08:30. | :08:31.
as he prepares to defend And we're with | :08:32. | :08:38.
the Scotland rugby team ahead of RAF Lossiemouth in Moray has entered | :08:39. | :08:41.
a new era with the arrival of its While the transfer | :08:42. | :08:52.
of the fast jets means Leuchars in Fife is set to become an army | :08:53. | :08:57.
barracks, the move also means Lossiemouth will remain one of the | :08:58. | :09:01.
UK's biggest and busiest fast-jet Flying in formation, some 20 feet | :09:02. | :09:21.
apart, the pilots of number six Squadron made sure everyone knows | :09:22. | :09:26.
who is about to land. Luke is' loss is Lossiemouth's gain. To Squadron | :09:27. | :09:31.
is transferring from the base in Fife, and a third to be formed here | :09:32. | :09:36.
next year. Following the announcement that we were | :09:37. | :09:39.
restructuring the locations of various squadrons around the air | :09:40. | :09:42.
force, a decision was taken to bring in essence all of the aircraft from | :09:43. | :09:49.
RAF Leuchars up to Lossiemouth, and the six Squadron arrival's at | :09:50. | :09:52.
Lossiemouth marks the start of a transfer. The Typhoon is said to be | :09:53. | :09:56.
some to be finest fast jet in the world, combining ground and air to | :09:57. | :10:00.
air combat roles. Its arrival here in Moray was crucial to the area. In | :10:01. | :10:05.
September, we will take over quick reaction alert, with two aircraft | :10:06. | :10:10.
that are ready to go in ten minutes, available to intercept long-range | :10:11. | :10:13.
aviation from the former Soviet Union or potentially deal with | :10:14. | :10:16.
terrorist threats to civilian airliners. That is our primary role, | :10:17. | :10:19.
and we are ready to go within ten minutes, all around the year. | :10:20. | :10:26.
Leuchars will still go the way of RAF Kinloss, handed over to the Army | :10:27. | :10:30.
as a barracks but with far fewer personnel. Tens of millions of | :10:31. | :10:33.
pounds had been spent here preparing to the Typhoons, and the arrival of | :10:34. | :10:37.
these aircraft secures the future of the space for decades to come. | :10:38. | :10:41.
Young people have been putting their questions to the | :10:42. | :10:43.
With 16 and 17-year-olds set to vote for the first time in September's | :10:44. | :10:47.
independence referendum, ministers invited more than 100 young people | :10:48. | :10:50.
Our correspondent James Cook went along too. | :10:51. | :11:01.
This event is the Scottish Government's event, they call it | :11:02. | :11:09.
Cafe style, with tables set out in the hall. The idea is that there is | :11:10. | :11:12.
a government minister had each one. There is Nicola Sturgeon. They are | :11:13. | :11:15.
taking questions from members of the public. There are social media | :11:16. | :11:19.
reporters there as well, and the idea is, after 15 minutes, the young | :11:20. | :11:23.
people will move from one table to another. They call that world cafe | :11:24. | :11:27.
style, but really, it is more like speed dating. Everyone is now moving | :11:28. | :11:34.
from table to table. Let's go and have a word with some people and see | :11:35. | :11:39.
how they were getting on. Excuse me. You are moving on to your next | :11:40. | :11:42.
table, can I just ask you how you're getting an? It is really good. Some | :11:43. | :11:47.
great responses to the questions we have been asking. What questions are | :11:48. | :11:49.
getting an? It is really good. Some great responses to the questions we | :11:50. | :11:52.
have been asking. What questions have you been Askin? I am a trainee | :11:53. | :11:54.
teacher, so questions about education. RU finding this useful? | :11:55. | :12:00.
Yes, there is a lot of information. I am so happy that I am here. We're | :12:01. | :12:06.
proud to be part of this, the first 16 and 17-year-olds to vote. You are | :12:07. | :12:11.
about to sit and speak to another minister, who is waiting here. What | :12:12. | :12:17.
is your view so far? I believe we have the best of both worlds, and I | :12:18. | :12:21.
want to keep it that way. So you have a tough job on your hands now. | :12:22. | :12:26.
Equally from no and yes side, this is a chance to talk and discuss. The | :12:27. | :12:30.
ministers coming in and open to the young people is great, because we | :12:31. | :12:34.
are often neglected in society. Can I ask you if you're persuaded one of | :12:35. | :12:39.
the? I am a strong yes. Some young people here are even filming the | :12:40. | :12:43.
event. They have taken over the Scottish Government's YouTube | :12:44. | :12:46.
Channel four the day. This is the last big set piece event the | :12:47. | :12:50.
Scottish Government itself will hold. It is now up to the political | :12:51. | :12:55.
parties and the campaigns, and they will be very interested to know | :12:56. | :12:58.
whether the votes of 16-year-olds and 17-year-olds make a difference | :12:59. | :12:59.
to the result. And now, a look at other stories | :13:00. | :13:02.
from the across the country. A golf clubhouse and cafe in Moray | :13:03. | :13:05.
has been destroyed by fire. More than 35 firefighters tackled | :13:06. | :13:08.
the overnight blaze at Covesea Links near Lossiemouth. | :13:09. | :13:11.
The cause is being investigated. Police have found no evidence of | :13:12. | :13:14.
criminal activity after photographs were published of an auxiliary nurse | :13:15. | :13:19.
wearing what was described NHS Grampian sacked James Turner | :13:20. | :13:22.
after the image appeared Officers say the clothing was not | :13:23. | :13:28.
the personal property of a patient Royal Highland Show organisers are | :13:29. | :13:32.
standing by their recommendation that visitors | :13:33. | :13:38.
avoid taking the tram there. The nearest stop to the Ingliston | :13:39. | :13:42.
venue is a 15-minute walk and people travelling from Edinburgh are being | :13:43. | :13:46.
asked to take the bus instead. Up to 60,000 visitors a day | :13:47. | :13:49.
are expected over the weekend. Sir Jackie Stewart will provide | :13:50. | :13:52.
expert advice to a motorsport safety review after the | :13:53. | :13:57.
deaths of three rally spectators. They died at the Jim Clark Borders | :13:58. | :14:01.
rally last month. The review will focus | :14:02. | :14:05.
on spectator safety at all types Final rehearsals are taking place | :14:06. | :14:08.
in Orkney for the opening of this year's | :14:09. | :14:14.
St Magnus International Festival. The event includes performances | :14:15. | :14:16.
from the BBC Singers and People in Ayrshire have been out | :14:17. | :14:19.
in the sunshine, as the Queen's Baton Relay for the Commonwealth | :14:20. | :14:29.
Games headed up the coast. Our reporter Graham | :14:30. | :14:31.
Stewart joined them. Is the sun rose, Ailsa Craig formed | :14:32. | :14:43.
the backdrop to this pat on's journey through Xavier airship. | :14:44. | :14:52.
Burns' birthplace in Alloway Sochi is from the crowd at its arrival, | :14:53. | :14:56.
and even those not so able to line the streets got their glimpse of the | :14:57. | :15:00.
bat and during the first hospital visit on the British Isles. At the | :15:01. | :15:05.
age of 101, resident Jane Hill remembers where it all began, with | :15:06. | :15:12.
the first Empire Games in 1930. It became more important, much more. It | :15:13. | :15:18.
wasn't really anything much of then, you know? This woman from Troon was | :15:19. | :15:25.
told she would never run again after she was diagnosed with a | :15:26. | :15:28.
degenerative eye condition. This is my guide runner with me. We have | :15:29. | :15:34.
done ultramarathon is, double marathons and regular marathons. It | :15:35. | :15:40.
is great. Actress Katrina Brian was a huge attraction for schoolchildren | :15:41. | :15:45.
here, and one of the other celebrity bat and errors was a former Scotland | :15:46. | :15:50.
boss. It River Calder, particularly as football, which is my sport, is | :15:51. | :15:54.
not traditionally a Commonwealth Games sport. To be remembered in | :15:55. | :15:58.
such a manner is a real privilege. As you can see, a huge crowd is | :15:59. | :16:03.
gathering for tonight's finale. The bat on moves tomorrow to | :16:04. | :16:08.
neighbouring East Ayrshire, and on Sunday, two South Lanarkshire. | :16:09. | :16:11.
Let's turn our attention to other sports. Here's David. | :16:12. | :16:14.
Andy Murray says he just doesn't know how he'll cope with | :16:15. | :16:16.
the pressures of defending his Wimbledon title. | :16:17. | :16:18.
Murray is the first British man in over three quarters | :16:19. | :16:20.
of a century to start the championships as singles champion. | :16:21. | :16:24.
He's been speaking to our tennis reporter Kheredine | :16:25. | :16:27.
Back at the scene of his greatest triumph, a warm Wimbledon welcome | :16:28. | :16:40.
awaits. It was a bit of a nailbiter at the practice courts, what would | :16:41. | :16:46.
the draw throw up? It plotted this potential par-4 Andy Murray. He will | :16:47. | :16:50.
open on Centre Court on Monday against David Coffin, before | :16:51. | :16:57.
possibly facing two Spaniards. Medel Monday could see a rematch with his | :16:58. | :17:01.
Davis Cup conqueror, before a tricky run to the final which could involve | :17:02. | :17:05.
matches against David Ferrer air and the world's top two, Novak Djokovic | :17:06. | :17:10.
and Rafael Nadal. This is where it all begins at one o'clock on Monday | :17:11. | :17:14.
afternoon. Of course, it is over three quarters of a century since a | :17:15. | :17:18.
British man last walked onto Centre Court of the defending Wimbledon | :17:19. | :17:21.
champion, so how does Andy Murray feel about the prospect? I would | :17:22. | :17:27.
expect to feel pride, but also pressure, and some nerves as well. I | :17:28. | :17:33.
am looking forward to it. It is something I have never experienced | :17:34. | :17:37.
before. I don't know how I will handle the situation. No one does, | :17:38. | :17:42.
but it will be interesting for me to see how I deal with it on Monday. It | :17:43. | :17:49.
will be music to many years if Andy Murray can produce his best again | :17:50. | :17:56.
here, and expect Henman Hill to be much busier on Monday lunchtime. | :17:57. | :17:58.
Scotland's rugby team play the third test of their summer tour tonight. | :17:59. | :18:01.
They're in Cordoba to play Argentina. | :18:02. | :18:02.
Head coach Vern Cotter will field an almost totally changed team | :18:03. | :18:05.
And as Alasdair Lamont reports, a win might help us get over | :18:06. | :18:09.
This stadium in Cordoba, Argentina, may at first glimpse seem | :18:10. | :18:26.
unremarkable. But the mole observant amongst you might just feel a shiver | :18:27. | :18:34.
down your spine. It was here in 1978 that Scotland's World Cup dream was | :18:35. | :18:39.
extinguished, as first we lost to Peru, then stumbled to a draw | :18:40. | :18:44.
against Iran. The Scottish pain is long forgotten by the people of | :18:45. | :18:49.
Cordoba, a city where in some respects it feels like 1978 never | :18:50. | :18:53.
ended. Here, the World Cup is again on everybody's minds, but for | :18:54. | :18:58.
tonight at least, it is rugby that takes centre stage. A different | :18:59. | :19:02.
Scotland team is in town, different from 1978, but also different from | :19:03. | :19:07.
the last two tests. Fern Cotter is looking to examine all have his | :19:08. | :19:13.
options. The primary objective is to give players an opportunity, so we | :19:14. | :19:16.
looked at some of those things we tried to put in place that didn't | :19:17. | :19:20.
work, and we are going to try it this week with another group of | :19:21. | :19:23.
guys. One man with more of a reason than most to be positive is Grant | :19:24. | :19:27.
Gilchrist. At just 23, he has been given the captain. There are a lot | :19:28. | :19:34.
of guys that have been performing well at club level, and are now | :19:35. | :19:38.
getting a chance to show that on the international stage. It is an | :19:39. | :19:42.
exciting team, and one that can get a result, I believe. Previous | :19:43. | :19:45.
Scottish teams have come to Cordoba with confidence as well. Perhaps | :19:46. | :19:48.
this time round, that confidence will not be misplaced. | :19:49. | :19:50.
Now, a look at what else is happening across Scottish sport. | :19:51. | :19:55.
Rangers are speaking to former player Kristian Nelis get about | :19:56. | :20:02.
taking a payroll as chief football operations opposite. He was | :20:03. | :20:06.
previously sporting director at Bayern Munich. | :20:07. | :20:09.
Gary minor's new assistant manager. He was the boss of hearts last | :20:10. | :20:12.
season. Meanwhile, kill minor current talks with former striker | :20:13. | :20:20.
David goodwill it. This goal helped Scotland's women beat Ireland 2-0. | :20:21. | :20:24.
They topped their World Cup qualifying group ahead of Sweden | :20:25. | :20:30.
after eight matches. The Sinn tea cup final is on | :20:31. | :20:33.
Saturday, with Glenurquhart seeking to avenge their defeat last season. | :20:34. | :20:39.
A lot of the boys work together, plumbers and electricians, all in | :20:40. | :20:42.
the same job, so there will be some bragging rights to whoever comes out | :20:43. | :20:47.
on top. The first event on the new tracker Hampton has taken place. It | :20:48. | :20:51.
was the Scottish schools' Championships, and Hamdan will host | :20:52. | :20:56.
the athletics during the Commonwealth Games. Read about Andy | :20:57. | :20:59.
Murray's Wimbledon hopes and more on the website. | :21:00. | :21:02.
That is all from me for now. A few miles off the coast between | :21:03. | :21:05.
East Lothian and Fife lies the Isle of May - one of the best places | :21:06. | :21:08.
in Scotland to watch seabirds. This is the live view from the | :21:09. | :21:11.
mainland on a spectacular evening. Our environment correspondent | :21:12. | :21:15.
David Miller is on the isle for us. David, more people will be headed | :21:16. | :21:19.
onto the island, with That is the plan, certainly, Sally, | :21:20. | :21:38.
and what a spectacular place, as you say, to spend a summer day. Let me | :21:39. | :21:41.
talk you through the view. From here, I can see right the way across | :21:42. | :21:46.
to North Berwick and the Pentland Hill is, further up the Firth of | :21:47. | :21:50.
Forth. To my left, the southern coastline of five, stretching all | :21:51. | :21:54.
the way down there to the beautiful East Neuk. This place, as you say, | :21:55. | :21:59.
famous for its sea bird colonies and of five, stretching all the way down | :22:00. | :22:01.
there to the beautiful East Neuk. This place, as you say, famous for | :22:02. | :22:04.
its sea bird colonies and other wildlife. That is all the more | :22:05. | :22:06.
remarkable when you consider just how close we are to big cities like | :22:07. | :22:11.
Edinburgh and Dundee. So near, and yet so far. The Isle of May and its | :22:12. | :22:17.
spectacular sea bird colonies are easy to reach from our big cities, | :22:18. | :22:21.
but it feels like a world apart. From the charismatic and colourful | :22:22. | :22:26.
puffins to be noisy and aggressive arctic terms, this little island has | :22:27. | :22:32.
a lot to offer, including a brand-new visitors' centre to | :22:33. | :22:36.
provide shelter when the weather is less than kind. Scotland is such a | :22:37. | :22:40.
lucky place to have really outstanding showcases for nature, if | :22:41. | :22:45.
you like, on the doorstep of some of its major conurbations, and this is | :22:46. | :22:49.
one of the best. What you find when you get here is an extraordinary | :22:50. | :22:53.
place with 200,000 breeding sea birds. So what you have here are | :22:54. | :23:01.
really happy, aggressive turns? They are defending their nests against | :23:02. | :23:05.
us, thinking we are predators. At the height of the breeding season, | :23:06. | :23:08.
it is the Arctic turns that make the biggest impression, an occupational | :23:09. | :23:14.
hazard for scientists. This is an outdoor, natural laboratory, so we | :23:15. | :23:17.
are spending a lot of our time looking at the birds, recording | :23:18. | :23:23.
their behaviour, recording how many birds are breeding, how many are | :23:24. | :23:28.
surviving. Food shortages and the changing climate have been | :23:29. | :23:32.
identified as the two biggest threats to Scotland's sea birds, and | :23:33. | :23:35.
their future may be uncertain, but their appeal endures. There are | :23:36. | :23:43.
other attractions here, of course, like Stephenson's lighthouse and the | :23:44. | :23:47.
wartime defences, so the Isle of May, well worth thinking about with | :23:48. | :23:51.
the summer holidays on the way. Actor you. Thank you much. Glad you | :23:52. | :23:56.
survived with your hair in tact! And now, the weather. What a week it has | :23:57. | :24:06.
been for most of us. Still a lot of fine weather on the cards. This has | :24:07. | :24:09.
been the picture for most of this week, with high-pressure anchored | :24:10. | :24:15.
out to the west. To the far north, fairly weak weather fronts bringing | :24:16. | :24:18.
something cloudier and damper to the northern and Western Isles. This | :24:19. | :24:25.
also includes Aberdeenshire. Elsewhere, dry with clear spells. | :24:26. | :24:31.
Not a cold night, ten or 11 Celsius in towns and cities. Seven or eight | :24:32. | :24:35.
in central highland glands. In central highland glands. Into | :24:36. | :24:38.
tomorrow, more of the same. Still the emperors is and dry, bright | :24:39. | :24:42.
weather, with good spells of sunshine across most of the country. | :24:43. | :24:46.
Cloudy for Orkney, the Northern Isles, the northern islands in the | :24:47. | :24:50.
north-east. The best of sunshine to the south, and if we look around | :24:51. | :24:55.
four o'clock, a lovely afternoon for Dumfries Galloway, the Borders, | :24:56. | :24:59.
through the central belt, into Argyll and the central highlands. | :25:00. | :25:04.
Temperatures into the high teens. Here, cloudier once again. If you | :25:05. | :25:08.
spots of rain for Orkney, the north-west coast and Lewis. Shetland | :25:09. | :25:10.
Shetland gets away with a decent day. Decent sunshine, but a bit on | :25:11. | :25:16.
the cool side. And in the hills tomorrow, a cloudier prospect across | :25:17. | :25:20.
more northern regions. The best of the sunshine across the Galloway | :25:21. | :25:24.
hills on the border hills, but mild temperatures, six to eight Celsius | :25:25. | :25:29.
across the summits. For the Queen's Baton relay tomorrow, it is East | :25:30. | :25:33.
Ayrshire's turn, and it looks fine, blue skies, some sunshine, Tunbridge | :25:34. | :25:37.
is eventually up to 17 Celsius in the afternoon. For the rest of the | :25:38. | :25:41.
afternoon, not much changes tomorrow. Mainly dry, some evening | :25:42. | :25:53.
sunshine on offer. Still if you spots of rain in the far north. Into | :25:54. | :25:56.
Sunday, the high stars to pull away, allowing this fronts to push on from | :25:57. | :25:59.
the North West. Some more in the way of showery rain put the Highlands, | :26:00. | :26:01.
the north-east of the mainland, with central and southern Scotland mainly | :26:02. | :26:04.
dry, but a bit cloudier. That is the forecast. | :26:05. | :26:08.
I'll be back with the headlines at 8 and the late bulletin just | :26:09. | :26:12.
Until then, from everyone on the team - right across the | :26:13. | :26:16. |
