The Queen has opened the 20th Commonwealth Games.

40,000 people were at Celtic Park in Glasgow to watch a colourful

spectacle which was in turn coothie and quirky, fun and fund-raising.

It featured superstars and Scottie dogs, teacakes,

and an appeal to raise money for the children of the Commonwealth.

There was a huge roar from the crowd when Team Scotland

Everybody that came to Celtic Park tonight was promised a spectacle, as

rebels watching throughout the world. -- as were those. Opinion on

social media divided, some loving it, some heating it. There has been

some concerns that the England team would be booed, but they got a big

cheer. Nothing dull compared to the cheer given to the Scottish team. --

nothing however. It started with a tongue in cheek

exclusion of all things Scottish. A jumble of emblems and symbols, some

of our best loved figures welcoming the world to Glasgow. There was

music, Rod Stewart here at his beloved Celtic Park. And Susan

Boyle. Before a majestic welcome for the Queen. And the Red Arrows

treating a boil -- blazing a trail across the city. And a rendition of

the national anthem. The 40,000 people at Celtic Park did not miss a

moment, thanks to the biggest weight screen ever seen in Europe will stop

-- widescreen. I cheer for the England team and the largest ever

Scottish team, wearing those outfits that have caused so much discussion,

carrying the hopes of a nation. 71 nations and territories coming

together, each led on by a Scottie dog. The Malaysian team wore black

armbands in memory of those killed in last week's disaster and the

First Minister wait a minute's silence to remember the victims of

the tragedy. He then welcomed the world to Scotland and Glasgow. So,

from the people of Scotland, let us a firm the most important message of

all, welcome to the Commonwealth of Nations, welcome to Scotland. The

ceremony did have its political moments. Here's to a quality in

Scotland! And the organisers used to make's events to promote and raise

funds for their charity, Unicef. And the finale, the Queen's Baton Relay

finished its epic journey of more than 100 days in males, coming home

to Glasgow carried by Sir Chris Hoy. After a little struggle, the

Queen's message was brought out. And now the baton has arrived here in

Glasgow, a city renowned for its dynamic cultural and sporting

achievements. And for the warmth of its people, for this opening

ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. It was over to one half hours long,

a lot to take in. How did it go down with the crowd? It did overrun. Lots

of people took to social media. Whilst some people thought it was

twee, it mainly got a big thumbs up. It was absolutely terrific. Much

better than I thought that I would be. I had real fear is that we would

embarrass ourselves tonight. The music was brilliant. Some of the

teams that were coming in or dancing, and atmosphere were really

good. Favourite moments where Sir Chris Hoy trying to get the message

out of pattern. You cannot explain the apps, it was fantastic. William.

What made it so special? Win-mac everything. So tomorrow it is all

about the sport, the first medals of the games will come in the

triathlon. But for Scottish athletes there is plenty of interest at the

velodrome and at the swimming pool. We are looking for some medals

hopefully from Hannah Miley and Michael Jamieson.

The journey to this Opening Ceremony began ten years ago when Glasgow

beat Edinburgh to be named as Scotland's candidate city

Here's a quick recap of how we got here.

The Commonwealth Games were coming to Glasgow. Hosting it would be a

fantastic opportunity for a Glasgow and all of Scotland. Is this going

to be Scottish swimming history? She has done it! The host for the 2014

Commonwealth Games will be Glasgow. I call upon the sports men and

sportswomen of the Commonwealth to assemble in four years time in

Glasgow, Scotland. In other news, four members

of a family from West Lothian have been killed in a head-on collision

on the outskirts of Falkirk. A man, woman and

their two young daughters died when Morag Kinniburgh has been

at the scene. The family who died are from West

Lothian. A couple in their 20s and their two little girls aged less

than three years old. They were all killed when their car collided with

a truck on their A801 this afternoon. The lorry driver was not

injured and will be helping the police with the investigation. The

vocal people say that this main road connecting the Mnumeric and nine at

Falkirk -- connecting Falkirk in Bathgate is an accident like sport.

But they say there has never been an accident as awful as this.

Staying dry to make, but the harder will return. Across the West End and

particularly the south-west, look at these temperatures that EDM, up

towards the high teens. Some thick cloud for part of the Borders, into

the audience, Edinburgh, Fife, Angus. Some haar hugging the coast

line. As we head through the morning towards lunch time a lot of that

cloud and low cloud bringing back towards the East Coast. For most of

us, bright, sunny and warm. A mid-afternoon, temperatures up to

around high 20s. We could see 21 degrees. Cooler for Shetland. For

the first few days of competition, it is not looking too bad at all.

There is change on the week on Saturday.
