and told she is not there. Later in the programme, still basking in | :00:48. | :00:49.
Davis Cup glory, but Andy Murray says talking to the leaders of the | :00:50. | :00:53.
sport about its future is a waste of time. And it's the first official | :00:54. | :00:59.
day of winter - how accurate are these long-range forecasts that | :01:00. | :01:02.
predict that we could be facing the worst one in 50 years? | :01:03. | :01:16.
Scotland's fire service is facing budget cuts and staff | :01:17. | :01:19.
shortages which could harm its ability to respond to 999 calls. | :01:20. | :01:25.
That's the claim of the Fire Brigades Union. | :01:26. | :01:28.
But Scotland's chief fire officer says he has enough staff - | :01:29. | :01:31.
they're just not always where they're needed. | :01:32. | :01:33.
In Aberdeen, crew shortages can be so serious that at times, only half | :01:34. | :01:36.
Wherever there is accident or trauma, Scotland's firefighters are | :01:37. | :01:53.
usually in the front line. Like all other public bodies, the Scottish | :01:54. | :01:57.
Fire and Rescue Service is facing budget pressures. The chief fire | :01:58. | :02:01.
officer told MSPs today he has enough firefighters, but they are | :02:02. | :02:05.
not necessarily in the right places. A particular pinch point is | :02:06. | :02:09.
Aberdeen. The number of people that have exited the service in the | :02:10. | :02:13.
north-east has been greater than in other parts of the country because | :02:14. | :02:17.
the economy has been so buoyant. You would hear the same local government | :02:18. | :02:23.
and everybody who seeks to employ staff within that area. Six units | :02:24. | :02:27.
should be available around the clock at the three full-time stations in | :02:28. | :02:32.
Aberdeen, but BBC Scotland has learned of serious problems in | :02:33. | :02:39.
crowing those fire appliances. Of the six pumps that should be | :02:40. | :02:42.
available, I understand that recently, there have only been | :02:43. | :02:45.
enough firefighters to crew three or even just two. To try and get some | :02:46. | :02:50.
degree of proper cover, firefighters have been taken off training courses | :02:51. | :02:53.
at the last minute, and others taken in from other stations in Peterhead | :02:54. | :03:00.
and Elgin. Overtime has also been used to provide cover, but the Fire | :03:01. | :03:04.
Brigade union says that is not sustainable. I think it is not | :03:05. | :03:09.
acceptable. In the long term, the public deserve a first-rate Fire | :03:10. | :03:12.
Service. That was part of the reason for going to a single service, to | :03:13. | :03:17.
protect the front line. But the front line is now being affected | :03:18. | :03:21.
when these fire engines are unavailable. The FPU and Fire and | :03:22. | :03:25.
Rescue Service averaged an agreement on allowing the transfer of | :03:26. | :03:30.
firefighters around the country. A recruitment drive targeting Aberdeen | :03:31. | :03:32.
is also underway, but it could be the middle of next year before those | :03:33. | :03:33.
recruits are operational. Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that | :03:34. | :03:35.
the SNP will vote against Syrian air She says David Cameron has made | :03:36. | :03:38.
progress in convincing sceptics, but the SNP remains concerned about | :03:39. | :03:45.
the lack of reliable ground troops and the need for post-conflict | :03:46. | :03:49.
reconstruction in Syria. I can confirm that SNP MPs will vote | :03:50. | :04:02.
against air strikes in the House of Commons tomorrow. I have listened | :04:03. | :04:07.
carefully, and I don't question the Prime Minister's motivation and | :04:08. | :04:10.
desire to achieve what he is setting out to achieve, but I have not been | :04:11. | :04:14.
persuaded that air strikes are the way to do this. | :04:15. | :04:15.
Let's go to Brian Taylor now, who's at Holyrood for us. | :04:16. | :04:17.
Brian, the SNP were always likely to come out against further action | :04:18. | :04:20.
They were. I put that point to the First Minister, saying that they | :04:21. | :04:30.
have been going through the motions. She was adamant that that was not | :04:31. | :04:34.
the case. Her tone throughout was conciliatory rather than dogmatic. | :04:35. | :04:38.
It was one of practical calculation, weighing all aspects of this | :04:39. | :04:42.
decision rather than being based on pre-existing founding principles. As | :04:43. | :04:44.
you mentioned, she gave qualified praise to the Prime Minister's | :04:45. | :04:50.
attempts to convince sceptics, but she believes they fell short. Nicola | :04:51. | :04:53.
Sturgeon is doing this for three reasons. One is a genuine conviction | :04:54. | :04:57.
that this is the right way to go, secondly that it matches the | :04:58. | :05:01.
troubled minds of the public after those terrorist attacks in Paris, | :05:02. | :05:05.
and thirdly, intentionally or otherwise, it sets the SNP on a | :05:06. | :05:09.
different course from the indecision we are expecting from the Labour | :05:10. | :05:14.
Party. Nicola Sturgeon has said the police in Scotland are reassessing | :05:15. | :05:16.
their terror capability after Paris and to assist with that, she | :05:17. | :05:20.
announced that they would be protecting the police budget, | :05:21. | :05:23.
including a real terms increase over the coming years with cash to assist | :05:24. | :05:25.
their endeavours. Still to come | :05:26. | :05:26.
on tonight's programme: Winter has descended - | :05:27. | :05:30.
we look at the efforts to keep In sport, Andy Murray has harsh | :05:31. | :05:32.
words for the Lawn Tennis Association, saying he doesn't | :05:33. | :05:37.
waste his time talking to them! And the romance of the Scottish Cup | :05:38. | :05:41.
- we have the full story The family of a woman killed | :05:42. | :05:44.
in a road accident on the way home from her son's wedding say | :05:45. | :05:55.
their lives will never be the same. Marie Laurie died in the early hours | :05:56. | :05:59.
of Sunday morning in Glasgow, when the taxi in which she was travelling | :06:00. | :06:03.
was involved in a crash with Her husband remains seriously ill | :06:04. | :06:06.
in hospital. Last Saturday had been one of the | :06:07. | :06:23.
happiest days of Marie Laurie's life. Her son had just got married | :06:24. | :06:27.
and Marie, seen here in Burgundy at the front, posed for a family photo | :06:28. | :06:33.
before going home. 90 minutes later, she was dead. At 1:30am on Sunday | :06:34. | :06:37.
morning, seconds after she got into a taxi with her husband Jamie, it | :06:38. | :06:42.
was involved in a crash with a green Vauxhall Astra that was being | :06:43. | :06:46.
followed by police. Her devastated family described her as amazing, and | :06:47. | :06:50.
save the wedding had been a joyful day. She was proud of her son. It is | :06:51. | :06:59.
so hard, because we were all together, dancing, having dinner, | :07:00. | :07:03.
drinking champagne, and then to get woken up and told she is not | :07:04. | :07:14.
there... It is something that happens to other people's families, | :07:15. | :07:19.
it doesn't happen to our family. She was amazing. Everybody loved her. | :07:20. | :07:24.
She spoke to everybody. Marie and her husband Jamie hailed a cab in | :07:25. | :07:27.
the East End of Glasgow. He is now in a stable condition in hospital. | :07:28. | :07:36.
Jamie said he looked up and was hit by the car and he woke up after and | :07:37. | :07:40.
could not remember anything. It might sound really bad, but somebody | :07:41. | :07:48.
can walk away with a cut. My sister has not come back. It will never be | :07:49. | :07:56.
the same. A 20-year-old man will be the subject of a report to the | :07:57. | :07:58.
Procurator Fiscal, in connection with alleged recovered offences. | :07:59. | :08:05.
Former E's family, the search for answers and the grieving have only | :08:06. | :08:06.
just begun -- for Marie's family. Should the law be clearer | :08:07. | :08:09.
on assisted suicide? He has Parkinson's disease | :08:10. | :08:11.
and he's appealing a ruling which says there shouldn't be | :08:12. | :08:16.
specific guidance on what happens But opponents say | :08:17. | :08:19.
the existing law is adequate Friends and supporters of Gordon | :08:20. | :08:36.
Ross's legal campaign gathered at Parliament house today. The | :08:37. | :08:40.
66-year-old toughens from Parkinson's disease and now lives in | :08:41. | :08:43.
a care home. He was too ill to attend this hearing at the Appeal | :08:44. | :08:50.
Court. Physically, he is basically helpless. He can pick up rudimentary | :08:51. | :08:54.
things with his hands together or one hand if it is something easy. | :08:55. | :09:01.
But he can't walk. He can't use his fingers or his hands properly. We | :09:02. | :09:05.
spoke to Gordon last February as he began his legal battle. He argued | :09:06. | :09:09.
that at some point, he may want to end his life, but will need help as | :09:10. | :09:12.
his physical condition deteriorated. Mr Ross had asked the courts to | :09:13. | :09:28.
issue guidance on assisted suicide in the same way as there is in | :09:29. | :09:32.
England and Wales. But the Lord Advocate argued that the law was | :09:33. | :09:35.
sufficient. If you help somebody to die, you could be prosecuted for | :09:36. | :09:39.
culpable homicide and murder. Mr Ross's case was rejected earlier | :09:40. | :09:43.
this year, but now his lawyers are asking judges to reconsider. MSPs | :09:44. | :09:47.
have already voted against changing the law on assisted suicide, but the | :09:48. | :09:51.
ethics around this debate continue to be contentious. Today, his appeal | :09:52. | :09:57.
is being heard. On radio Scotland today, pro-life campaigners argued | :09:58. | :10:01.
that the law should not change. The problem is that if you produced to | :10:02. | :10:04.
detailed guidance, you provide a path for anyone who might have | :10:05. | :10:09.
dubious motivation to know how they can avoid being prosecuted, if they | :10:10. | :10:13.
say the right things. I suspect that is why the Lord Advocate is not keen | :10:14. | :10:18.
to do so. The judicial review is scheduled to last two days. After | :10:19. | :10:22.
that, the judges will decide what action to take. | :10:23. | :10:23.
Inspectors at Glasgow's new ?800 million hospital say two patients in | :10:24. | :10:26.
a unit for elderly patients hadn't eaten solid food for over a week. | :10:27. | :10:30.
The team from Healthcare Improvement Scotland said part of the unit was | :10:31. | :10:34.
short-staffed, with several patients losing weight without those caring | :10:35. | :10:36.
A man who raped two women and used pliers to rip out one | :10:37. | :10:43.
of the victims' teeth has been jailed for 10 years and given | :10:44. | :10:46.
Donald Jeffrey was convicted of three rapes, attempted murder | :10:47. | :10:51.
and four assaults against a woman between 2008 and 2014. | :10:52. | :10:56.
The 44-year-old from Glasgow was also convicted of five offences | :10:57. | :11:00.
In the years since they lost their daughter, Linda Norgrove's | :11:01. | :11:12.
parents have continued her work with a foundation in her name. | :11:13. | :11:14.
They've now raised a million pounds to help improve | :11:15. | :11:16.
the lives of the people she went to Afghanistan to help. | :11:17. | :11:19.
Jackie O'Brien has been speaking to the aid worker's parents. | :11:20. | :11:27.
Along the wild Atlantic coast of Lewis, as Lorna and John nor Grove | :11:28. | :11:33.
take some time out from running the charity they set up in their late | :11:34. | :11:39.
daughter's name. An aid worker from Lewis kidnapped in Afghanistan last | :11:40. | :11:44.
month has been killed by... Five years after the 36-year-old was | :11:45. | :11:48.
killed in a failed rescue attempt, ?1 million has been raised in her | :11:49. | :11:51.
memory. The lender nor Grove foundation helps women and children | :11:52. | :11:56.
in Afghanistan and their family through their loss. It is very | :11:57. | :12:03.
satisfying being able to help people. So it has become a big part | :12:04. | :12:08.
of our lives. As well as opening a school in one of Kabul's worst | :12:09. | :12:11.
neighbourhoods, 44 girls have received scholarships to attend | :12:12. | :12:17.
university. Young women like this one, who is now studying law. When | :12:18. | :12:22.
we were there in March, we were so taken with their enthusiasm, their | :12:23. | :12:28.
desire to know more about Linda. They hold up Linda as a role model. | :12:29. | :12:35.
That was really surprising to us. And it was fantastic to think that | :12:36. | :12:40.
these girls, who are now able to go to college, they wouldn't have been | :12:41. | :12:43.
able to without the scholarships. Some of the last photographs taken | :12:44. | :12:47.
by Linda before she was kidnapped feature in the foundation's | :12:48. | :12:50.
calendars and Christmas cards this year. This is Linda's. The | :12:51. | :12:58.
Norgroves strive to keep overheads to a minimum as they continue their | :12:59. | :13:03.
daughter's work helping ordinary Afghans still living with the terror | :13:04. | :13:06.
of the Taliban and so-called Islamic State. It will make a difference. | :13:07. | :13:15.
But on the other hand, you cannot stand by and watch things | :13:16. | :13:19.
deteriorate without doing something to help. Every little bit helps. The | :13:20. | :13:23.
Homeland Linda left behind is a world away from troubled | :13:24. | :13:27.
Afghanistan. But work is continuing here and there to change the lives | :13:28. | :13:31.
of the people she left Lewis to help. | :13:32. | :13:35.
Sport now, and Andy Murray is a hard hitter | :13:36. | :13:38.
There has been some verbal hard-hitting as well, yes. | :13:39. | :13:47.
Andy Murray has launched a scathing attack on the LTA, the | :13:48. | :13:50.
The World Number Two has said "nothing ever gets done" and "I | :13:51. | :13:54.
don't waste my time talking to them." | :13:55. | :13:58.
The comments surface on the day Murray and his Davis Cup | :13:59. | :14:01.
team-mates were guests of David Cameron at 10 Downing Street. | :14:02. | :14:12.
Appearances can be deceptive. A casual arrival at 10 Downing Street | :14:13. | :14:18.
as the Davis Cup team assembled to meet the Prime Minister, David | :14:19. | :14:21.
Cameron. But when it's time to provide the official snapshot of | :14:22. | :14:26.
success, a much more unified look as Team GB are paraded with the | :14:27. | :14:29.
trophy. The pomp and celebration after the is Doric win at the | :14:30. | :14:34.
weekend seems to signal an all-time high in the world of British tennis. | :14:35. | :14:38.
But appearances can be deceptive. For the June in the crown of the | :14:39. | :14:43.
LTA, Andy Murray has served up a barrage of criticism of the | :14:44. | :14:48.
organisation. Nothing ever gets done and I don't like wasting my time. | :14:49. | :14:58.
Murray has voiced his concerns about future talent coming through. It is | :14:59. | :15:04.
concerning not to have any juniors in the grand slams. | :15:05. | :15:10.
Those are the criticisms, but did Murray today have a solution? I | :15:11. | :15:18.
don't really know. It is not really for me to say. I think we as a team | :15:19. | :15:25.
have done the best we could to try to promote the game. The Davis Cup | :15:26. | :15:29.
is a great way of promoting the support. So far, the LTA has not | :15:30. | :15:36.
responded. Meanwhile, another coveted prize could end up in | :15:37. | :15:40.
Marie's hands, as he joins an illustrious list of sports stars. He | :15:41. | :15:44.
has just been aimed in the short list for the BBC Sports personality | :15:45. | :15:48.
of the year. A recognition of his success in 2015. And with success, a | :15:49. | :15:55.
platform for politics. Interesting conversation, no doubt, at 10 | :15:56. | :16:00.
Downing Street, for the future of British tennis. | :16:01. | :16:03.
It's second against third from the Scottish Premiership drawn | :16:04. | :16:05.
to face each other in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. | :16:06. | :16:08.
Third placed Hearts will be at home to second place Aberdeen. | :16:09. | :16:11.
The fourth round in the competition is the stage | :16:12. | :16:15.
where some of the country's smaller clubs dream of big money draws | :16:16. | :16:18.
A couple of likely lads dreaming of romance. The romance of the cup. A | :16:19. | :16:30.
cliche, perhaps. Not to them. The cliches are a reason, because they | :16:31. | :16:35.
are true. And to be involved at this level, it is an amazing thing for | :16:36. | :16:48.
us. You were desperate to get Celtic or | :16:49. | :16:52.
Rangers. Absolutely. For the money and profile side of things. Physical | :16:53. | :16:55.
we get through Saturday, we manage to get through the next round. We | :16:56. | :17:01.
will happily wait for them in. David seeking go lie yats may have been | :17:02. | :17:07.
disappointed. Two of Scottish football's big boys were drawn | :17:08. | :17:12.
together. Heart of Midlothian will play Aberdeen. It's a good one. It | :17:13. | :17:16.
will be a full house. Cracking atmosphere. I think, you know, I | :17:17. | :17:24.
will fancy a draw. Who do you think will go through eventually? Somebody | :17:25. | :17:28.
on penalties. Is that a young Celtic star letting his team-mates know | :17:29. | :17:32.
they face a trip to Stranraer? Possibly. It's different. You don't | :17:33. | :17:40.
know what to expect. It's quite a distance. We need to go there | :17:41. | :17:45.
prepared. Not a draw to please hopeless row manics, but it gave | :17:46. | :17:50.
everyone at ham den something to talk about when the National Stadium | :17:51. | :17:51.
was evacuated during a fire alarm. Inverness Caledonian Thistle | :17:52. | :17:58.
manager, John Hughes, has agreed a two-year contract | :17:59. | :17:59.
extension that commits him to Last season he led Caley Thistle | :18:00. | :18:02.
to a maiden Scottish Cup win. They were third in the Premiership | :18:03. | :18:06.
and enjoyed a first European Hughes also was honoured with | :18:07. | :18:09.
the PFA Manager of the Year award. The Dundee United head coach, | :18:10. | :18:17.
Mixu Paatelainen, remains convinced they'll avoid | :18:18. | :18:21.
relegation despite being seven points adrift at the bottom | :18:22. | :18:24.
of the Premiership at the moment. The Finn has watched the team keep | :18:25. | :18:27.
only one clean sheet in his seven matches in charge, but still has | :18:28. | :18:31.
faith in his defenders after We were comfortable and - so from | :18:32. | :18:42.
that respect, the players have plenty of belief also. Attacking | :18:43. | :18:46.
wise, you know, we he created loads of chances. Clear-cut opportunities. | :18:47. | :18:51.
Defensively we were solid. Just those stupid mistakes. That's it for | :18:52. | :18:54.
tonight. Jackie. Thank you, Rhona. After the weather we've had over | :18:55. | :18:58.
the last few days, you'd never know it but winter's actually only just | :18:59. | :19:01.
officially beginning today. It's a challenging time | :19:02. | :19:04.
for services looking after vulnerable people, to those | :19:05. | :19:05.
keeping roads and pavements clear. Let's go over now to our reporter, | :19:06. | :19:08.
Cameron Buttle, who is at a gritting depot in | :19:09. | :19:10.
Newtown St Boswells in the Borders. Cameron. Jackie, the gritters were | :19:11. | :19:24.
out in the Borders last night, right through into today. The first | :19:25. | :19:29.
official day of winter. It was up in the Cairngorms area. There were | :19:30. | :19:33.
local roads closed. The A9 was closed for a bit because of an | :19:34. | :19:36.
accident. All of that should clear up throughout this evening. Back | :19:37. | :19:41.
here in the Borders there has been a lot of chat because of long-range | :19:42. | :19:45.
predictions that we could be facing the worst winter here in 50 years | :19:46. | :19:48.
it. Could be snowing from December through to March. Not everybody is | :19:49. | :19:52.
convinced about these long-range forecasts. More on that later. First | :19:53. | :19:56.
our health correspondents has been looking at some new research which | :19:57. | :20:01.
suggests that more people die in countries with warmer winters simply | :20:02. | :20:05.
because they allow themselves to become too cold. It's officially the | :20:06. | :20:15.
start of winter and it's getting cold. There is a clear relationship | :20:16. | :20:20.
between the outdoor temperature and death rates. Cold weather causes | :20:21. | :20:25.
changes to your blood. There are more infections around. All that | :20:26. | :20:28.
means you are more like likely to have a heart attack or stroke or | :20:29. | :20:32.
suffer breathing difficulties. Most countries have a winter death toll | :20:33. | :20:35.
which is up to a third higher than normal. In Scotland that amounts to | :20:36. | :20:42.
around 350 extra deaths a week. There is a curious contrast. The | :20:43. | :20:46.
further south you go, the higher the death rate in winter even though | :20:47. | :20:50.
they are warmer countries. The phenomenon can be seen across the | :20:51. | :20:55.
UK. There are fewer deaths in Scotland compared to Wales and | :20:56. | :20:58.
Northern Ireland. The highest death rate at all is in England. What is | :20:59. | :21:03.
interesting paradox is that if you live in a country that is warm for | :21:04. | :21:06.
the rest of the year there are more deaths in winter in those countries | :21:07. | :21:11.
even at higher temperatures. We think this is because people don't | :21:12. | :21:14.
insulate their houses as well in warmer countries and also that they | :21:15. | :21:18.
don't take other precautions when they are going outside. They are not | :21:19. | :21:22.
wearing the right clothes. They are not wearing hats and gloves. They | :21:23. | :21:25.
are much more exposed to those colder temperatures. On a day when | :21:26. | :21:30.
temperatures were similar in two cities, north and south, we headed | :21:31. | :21:33.
out onto the streets of Plymouth and Edinburgh to see what people were | :21:34. | :21:38.
wearing. Just literally a coat and a T-shirt. Yeah. I have two. It's hot | :21:39. | :21:43.
in the shops. We don't want to go silly. A jacket and a T-shirt. I | :21:44. | :21:47.
have it two layers under the trousers. Then a body warmer and | :21:48. | :21:52.
then a top on top of that and then the jacket. I've got about three | :21:53. | :21:58.
tops, a hoodie and a ski jacket. Four layers on. You are wearing your | :21:59. | :22:03.
minus 20 coat as well. You are not too hot, are you? No, I'm not. That | :22:04. | :22:07.
is the wind-chill for you. This winter make sure your house is warm | :22:08. | :22:11.
and wrap up outside. It could save your life. Well, that is just some | :22:12. | :22:19.
of the 18,500 tonnes of grit available to Scottish Borders alone | :22:20. | :22:23.
to keep the roads down here open. This is just one of their gritters. | :22:24. | :22:31.
Grittyst Gonzales. ?100,000 this machine. Along way from the man in | :22:32. | :22:37.
the back of a van with a spade. They have monitors for cameras over the | :22:38. | :22:42.
place. They have accurate sat-nav and up-to-date weather predictions. | :22:43. | :22:46.
You can actually control the flow of grit coming out the back of the | :22:47. | :22:50.
gritter itself and the makeup of the grit itself. They use different | :22:51. | :22:55.
solutions for different roads, trunk roads and side roots roads. In the | :22:56. | :23:00.
Scottish Borders they have the resilient community programme. If | :23:01. | :23:04.
you sign up to that in a rural committee you get this first aid | :23:05. | :23:09.
kit, synthetic sand bands and the anti-flooding kit. Why? They learnt | :23:10. | :23:15.
lessons five years ago. That was the terrible winter of 2010. Who can | :23:16. | :23:25.
forget the winter of 2010? Heavy snow for days on ends. Temperatures | :23:26. | :23:30.
droubl to below double din its. Thousands stranded over night on the | :23:31. | :23:35.
M8. Police again warning people this evening not to go out unless | :23:36. | :23:38.
absolutely necessary. Five-and-a-half hours now. We have a | :23:39. | :23:41.
three-year-old here. We are not moving at all. It ranks up there | :23:42. | :23:45.
with Scotland's worst winters. Snow fell? Scotland... 1947, post-war | :23:46. | :23:51.
misery. 23 foot snowdrifts, communities cut off for weeks. 1962, | :23:52. | :23:58.
explosives blasting open rail routes trying to get the country moving | :23:59. | :24:03.
after weeks of blizzards on top of a big freeze. There are predictions of | :24:04. | :24:10.
us seeing the worst winter for 50 years this year. A note of caution | :24:11. | :24:15.
from the experts. We can look to see whether it will be colder, dryer, | :24:16. | :24:19.
wetter or warmer. These will be a percentage, a probability of whether | :24:20. | :24:22.
or not we think taets's going to be different to what we would normally | :24:23. | :24:26.
expect. They are very broad these seasonal forecasts. To be that | :24:27. | :24:38.
specific about it being a snow mageddon is unlikely. The current | :24:39. | :24:42.
Minister says lessons have been learnt and preparations are in place | :24:43. | :24:50.
no matter the forecast. We know we will face snow, wind, heavy rain, | :24:51. | :24:53.
what it happens to be, we have prepared much we have invested in | :24:54. | :24:58.
new technology, new equipment, sharing plans and increased | :24:59. | :25:01.
awaresness of weather incidents. As bad as it was in 2010 one record | :25:02. | :25:13.
still stands 20 years on, the record low temperature of minus 22 degrees | :25:14. | :25:17.
Celsius. Few are keen to see that one broken. Tomorrow night we will | :25:18. | :25:21.
be with the Scottish Ambulance Service and looking at how their | :25:22. | :25:25.
paramedics, support staff and specialist teams are gearing up for | :25:26. | :25:26.
the winter. Thank you Cameron. After that build up, | :25:27. | :25:30.
what does the immediate forecast It is mild tonight, Jackie. It has | :25:31. | :25:39.
been wintry over the last couple of days in places. Today rain spreading | :25:40. | :25:47.
North wards, there was some snow in the mix. There was a lovely picture | :25:48. | :25:51.
from Aberdeenshire. Tonight will be mild. Reasonably dry compared with | :25:52. | :25:58.
earlier. Heavy rain to the northern and western isles. Spots of drizzle, | :25:59. | :26:04.
another band of rain will push in from the west overnight. By the end | :26:05. | :26:08.
of the night pretty much double digits across the board. For many a | :26:09. | :26:12.
warmer night than it was by day today. So tomorrow morning it's a | :26:13. | :26:16.
fairly mild start, cloudy and damp. I have left the temperatures on | :26:17. | :26:20.
there. You can see the rain clears through. It turns, dryer, brighter | :26:21. | :26:26.
sunnier. Watch what happens with the temperatures, they go lower, it gets | :26:27. | :26:31.
colder. As the sunshine arrives a colder air mass arrives with it too. | :26:32. | :26:35.
An improvement tomorrow but getting colder. The south will start at | :26:36. | :26:41.
10-11 Celsius down to seven or eight already. The further north the | :26:42. | :26:46.
colder it will be. Winds lighter inland compared with this coming | :26:47. | :26:49.
night. Breezy to the West Coast. One or two showers across the north-west | :26:50. | :26:53.
highlands. Those wintry across the tops of the hills and mounts angst. | :26:54. | :26:58.
For the northern isles showers there. Some sunshine in the mix too. | :26:59. | :27:01.
As we head through the rest of the afternoon into the evening tomorrow | :27:02. | :27:10.
we hold on to that dry picture under clearing skies perfect recipe for a | :27:11. | :27:14.
widespread frost. Rain flirting with the borders. As we head through | :27:15. | :27:18.
towards Thursday we are in that cold air. Another largely dry and bright | :27:19. | :27:23.
day for most of us. Some spells of sunshine around. You can see the | :27:24. | :27:27.
blue on the chart, a cold start. Towards the afternoon there will be | :27:28. | :27:30.
sunshine, but for or five degrees. Light showers to the north-west and | :27:31. | :27:34.
wind from the south-west too. That's the forecast for now. Thank you, | :27:35. | :27:36.
Christopher. Now, | :27:37. | :27:41.
a reminder of tonight's main news. The Fire Brigades Union has claimed | :27:42. | :27:43.
that Scotland's Fire Service is facing budget cuts and staff | :27:44. | :27:46.
shortages which could harm its | :27:47. | :27:49. |
