Hundreds of millions of pounds is to be spent in the north-east | :00:16. | :00:19.
of Scotland to improve infrastructure like roads, | :00:20. | :00:21.
railways and harbours - and to create jobs. | :00:22. | :00:24.
The cash is coming from both the Scottish and the UK governments. | :00:25. | :00:27.
Visiting Aberdeen, the Prime Minister told BBC Scotland | :00:28. | :00:29.
he was "100%" behind efforts to strengthen the oil industry. | :00:30. | :00:33.
Here's our political editor Brian Taylor. | :00:34. | :00:42.
1975 and her Majesty the cream starts oil flooding from the giant | :00:43. | :00:50.
field in the North Sea. If we use it right, this flood of energy can | :00:51. | :00:55.
without doubt much improve our economic well-being. For decades | :00:56. | :01:00.
after that oil and Aberdeen helped to bankroll Britain. During those | :01:01. | :01:05.
decades Aberdeen's economy beams, but passing time and falling oil | :01:06. | :01:10.
prices have left the people of Aberdeen anxious for the future, and | :01:11. | :01:19.
it is not just oil. This company says that the city needs help. The | :01:20. | :01:24.
boss has two counter the concept that the city is remote, poorly | :01:25. | :01:29.
served by transport. There is a perception we are in the frozen | :01:30. | :01:34.
north and not connected to the rest of the country. Today's city deal | :01:35. | :01:38.
signed in Aberdeen combines Council initiatives with money from the UK | :01:39. | :01:45.
to boost private investment. The great thing about the city deal is | :01:46. | :01:49.
it can leverage in lots of other money which might total about ?2 | :01:50. | :01:53.
billion coming from other public sector sources and the private | :01:54. | :01:58.
sector, so I believe it is going to make a real difference to the | :01:59. | :02:01.
economy here in Aberdeen and the north-east. The deal includes | :02:02. | :02:09.
expanding Aberdeen harbour. The package extends beyond the city into | :02:10. | :02:15.
Aberdeenshire. SNP backbenchers said the city deal is inadequate. | :02:16. | :02:20.
Aberdeen deserves more from the UK government than the 125 million they | :02:21. | :02:25.
have allocated, particularly considering the Treasury has | :02:26. | :02:32.
benefited from over 3000 million pounds of North Sea oil revenue that | :02:33. | :02:39.
has flowed from Aberdeen to London. And so in addition the Scottish | :02:40. | :02:42.
government announced that new investment in rail will form part of | :02:43. | :02:48.
a ?254 million package over 5-10 years. The first Minister was | :02:49. | :02:53.
concerned it should go further than the city deal was going to allow us | :02:54. | :02:56.
to go. These projects have been identified by the council and so we | :02:57. | :03:02.
know it is rooted in what the community thinks is important. We | :03:03. | :03:08.
are contributing half of the money, it is a deal between the UK | :03:09. | :03:13.
government and the councils. The government have pledged 20 million | :03:14. | :03:19.
pounds for new finds in the North Sea. City deal added to tax | :03:20. | :03:23.
incentives could also kick-start industry. What do you say to the | :03:24. | :03:31.
critics about the revenue Aberdeen oil has generated? In the last | :03:32. | :03:37.
budget we have a tax cut to the whole industry which was worth over | :03:38. | :03:42.
?1 billion. This city deal comes on top of that, but the point I would | :03:43. | :03:47.
make is that this demonstrates the broad shoulders of the United | :03:48. | :03:51.
Kingdom can get behind the oil industry, including the oil industry | :03:52. | :03:54.
here in Scotland when it faces difficulties. The hope is that | :03:55. | :03:58.
private growth will follow this public investment and that in future | :03:59. | :04:04.
Aberdeen's oil links remain more than a memory. | :04:05. | :04:08.
We're being warned to expect widespread disruption | :04:09. | :04:10.
across Scotland tomorrow, as Storm Gertrude sweeps | :04:11. | :04:12.
Scotrail has taken the decision to cancel many services tomorrow | :04:13. | :04:16.
There will be no trains north of Inverness, no trains to Oban | :04:17. | :04:21.
or Fort William, some Clyde Coast services are suspended | :04:22. | :04:24.
and the Glasgow-Edinburgh trains will also be affected, | :04:25. | :04:27.
cut to half-hourly as the trains will be running more slowly | :04:28. | :04:29.
Schools will also be closed in Orkney, Shetland and the Western | :04:30. | :04:35.
We have seen in the past all types of things blown onto the railway | :04:36. | :04:47.
which poses a safety risk to our trains and to our customers. Some of | :04:48. | :04:53.
these odd trees, roofs of buildings, trampolines, garden sheds and the | :04:54. | :04:59.
like, and it really poses a derailment risk, so we have two slow | :05:00. | :05:03.
our trains down under the circumstances. The forecast is for | :05:04. | :05:16.
wins in excess of 80 mph. We will be holding all transport, including | :05:17. | :05:19.
public transport and school buses. All schools will be closed tomorrow. | :05:20. | :05:24.
We will have a fall weather forecast shortly. | :05:25. | :05:26.
Police searching for two elderly women who went missing in Moray | :05:27. | :05:29.
earlier this week have found their bodies. | :05:30. | :05:30.
Police say they are those of 77 year old Rosemary Laing from Rothes | :05:31. | :05:33.
and 85 year old Kathleen Edward from Aberlour. | :05:34. | :05:35.
It's understood police are treating the deaths as unrelated. | :05:36. | :05:39.
A 9 year old boy, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, | :05:40. | :05:42.
has met the First Minister to appeal for NHS funding | :05:43. | :05:45.
Michael Young from Larbert took part in a medical trial for a drug | :05:46. | :05:52.
to slow the progress of the muscle-wasting condition. | :05:53. | :05:54.
He gave Nicola Sturgeon a letter, urging her to help him have | :05:55. | :05:59.
continued access to the medicine, Translarna, which has still to be | :06:00. | :06:02.
Many parents aren't fully aware of the dangers | :06:03. | :06:07.
That's according to Scottish Government research, | :06:08. | :06:12.
suggesting that a third of parents know little about how children can | :06:13. | :06:15.
be exploited when they're using smartphones and computers. | :06:16. | :06:18.
Now a new TV advert is being shown to alert them, | :06:19. | :06:21.
Hello. Enjoy your programme? I am having a great night. I've been | :06:22. | :06:39.
messaging your daughter. This could easily be your child's phone. The | :06:40. | :06:44.
message is sinister. Those pictures you sent me... The campaign is a | :06:45. | :06:49.
stark reminder to parents of the possible dangers on the Internet. | :06:50. | :06:57.
stark reminder to parents of the outlet that can advise | :06:58. | :06:58.
stark reminder to parents of the sure how to support their children. | :06:59. | :07:04.
Think of the Internet is a place, a destination. That is where young | :07:05. | :07:07.
children go now, it is all their lives. You would not let them go out | :07:08. | :07:13.
and not know where they are going. Parents used to be able to check up | :07:14. | :07:18.
on their children as they use the computer in the backroom, but | :07:19. | :07:22.
increasing use of mobile phones and tablets means that children can take | :07:23. | :07:24.
increasing use of mobile phones and them off to their bedroom. There | :07:25. | :07:27.
increasing use of mobile phones and some determined perpetrators out | :07:28. | :07:28.
there. If they can get a first some determined perpetrators out | :07:29. | :07:37.
purchase, perhaps a picture, it can lead to blackmail. Unless you do | :07:38. | :07:40.
more, I will share this with your friends and parents. The least | :07:41. | :07:46.
Scotland said they have seen a 77% rise in Internet investigations. The | :07:47. | :07:50.
message behind this campaign is simple, talk to your kids to help | :07:51. | :07:52.
them stay safe online. She simple, talk to your kids to help | :07:53. | :07:57.
over tomorrow for a few drinks. We will see what happens. I cannot | :07:58. | :07:59.
wait. Wood product manufacturer Norbord | :08:00. | :08:05.
is investing ?95 million in expanding its factory | :08:06. | :08:06.
near Inverness. The investment means its expecting | :08:07. | :08:08.
to nearly double its production capacity and safeguard | :08:09. | :08:10.
around 130 jobs. because international students | :08:11. | :08:19.
are unable to stay in the UK after graduating, according | :08:20. | :08:21.
to Edinburgh University. It's been telling a Holyrood inquiry | :08:22. | :08:24.
that the closure of the post-study work visa programme has had | :08:25. | :08:27.
an impact on competitiveness. It claims the university | :08:28. | :08:31.
is attracting, developing and then losing some of the brightest | :08:32. | :08:34.
talent in the world. It is not just for universities and | :08:35. | :08:46.
colleges in terms of the fees that students might pay, but there is | :08:47. | :08:52.
also a direct impact on the internationalisation on our | :08:53. | :08:56.
laboratories and our output. We want to work with the brightest brains | :08:57. | :09:00.
around the world, but if we make it more difficult and cut it off, we do | :09:01. | :09:03.
it at our peril. Edinburgh will see 16,000 affordable | :09:04. | :09:05.
homes built over the next ten years. Six housing associations | :09:06. | :09:08.
have pledged to match Edinburgh City Council's plan | :09:09. | :09:10.
to build 8,000 homes in the capital. The city's population is set to grow | :09:11. | :09:13.
by up to 30% over the next 20 years. Tennis and two Scots | :09:14. | :09:17.
are already through to finals Jamie Murray and Brazilian partner | :09:18. | :09:19.
Bruno Soares will play the pairing of Nestor and Stepanek | :09:20. | :09:24.
in the doubles final. Gordon Reid's made it too | :09:25. | :09:28.
in the wheelchair singles. While Andy Murray can | :09:29. | :09:31.
clinch his place in the final Game set and match. And that is all | :09:32. | :09:51.
she wrote. Murray, and utterly convincing performance. Is the keys | :09:52. | :09:57.
for the camera for mum Judy? Maybe it is just to celebrate reaching his | :09:58. | :10:01.
third consecutive grand slam final. Unfortunately I lost to last year. | :10:02. | :10:07.
It's not a great feeling to do that. Of course you are proud of yourself | :10:08. | :10:11.
for getting that far, it is a great achievement, but when you get there | :10:12. | :10:16.
you want to win and on Saturday night we will be laying it on the | :10:17. | :10:20.
line and doing our very best to try to win the trophy. Auden read, seen | :10:21. | :10:25.
here having it his all in the gem, is determined to do all these can to | :10:26. | :10:34.
win the Wiltshire singles. He will play his Belgian opponent for the | :10:35. | :10:39.
championship. It's the third time I've played in a final. I'm going to | :10:40. | :10:43.
try and enjoy it and do what I have done, use my game plan and try to | :10:44. | :10:52.
enjoy. So did the third member of the tartan trio in Melbourne. If | :10:53. | :11:03.
Andy Murray wins tomorrow, he will face Novak Djokovic in the final. | :11:04. | :11:05.
Let's get that all important weather forecast now | :11:06. | :11:19.
Good evening. We have some met office warnings in place. Tonight | :11:20. | :11:27.
the wins will strengthen or the while. The wind and rain is courtesy | :11:28. | :11:34.
of this deep pressure. It is our seventh named storm of the winter, | :11:35. | :11:41.
Gertrude. Winds gusting up to 70 master our across parts of England. | :11:42. | :11:54.
Here is Scotland in detail. You can see the amber warning details there. | :11:55. | :12:01.
Even where we don't have the amber warning, the lower be aware warning | :12:02. | :12:06.
is in place. Significant disruption on the travel front. A very wet | :12:07. | :12:11.
morning. There is the potential for some interruption to power supplies | :12:12. | :12:16.
and small-scale structural damage. The heavy rain starting to pull away | :12:17. | :12:21.
at around eight o'clock. There will be a lot of spray and surface water. | :12:22. | :12:27.
The white arrows indicating steady wind speeds, but it is the gusts | :12:28. | :12:35.
that will cause the most disruption. Around western coasts and the | :12:36. | :12:37.
Northern Isles there will be some big waves. The high winds laughing | :12:38. | :12:44.
lee-macro lasting three most of the day. -- the high winds lasting | :12:45. | :13:04.
through most of the day. There is Gertrude, she goes, but as we head | :13:05. | :13:09.
to into Saturday, tightly packed ice above, so it will stay windy. There | :13:10. | :13:15.
will be frequent wintry showers with some snow to low levels. | :13:16. | :13:19.
Our next update is during Breakfast at 6.25am tomorrow morning. | :13:20. | :13:22.
But from everyone on the late team here in Glasgow and around | :13:23. | :13:26. |
