EU. Join me now on BBC Two, 11pm in Scotland. | :00:00. | :00:16.
One of Scotland's oldest industrial sites is to close with the loss | :00:17. | :00:20.
The Swiss owners of the Carron Phoenix sink factory in Falkirk | :00:21. | :00:25.
are moving production to Slovakia leaving only a handful | :00:26. | :00:29.
The Scottish TUC described the move as another huge setback | :00:30. | :00:35.
Our reporter Andrew Anderson has the story. | :00:36. | :00:40.
News that this factory is to close was broken | :00:41. | :00:43.
to the workforce earlier today, and I am told it came | :00:44. | :00:46.
In recent years, Carron Phoenix has manufactured sinks here, | :00:47. | :00:50.
but this factory has a history going back more than 250 years, | :00:51. | :00:53.
when it was established as an iron foundry. | :00:54. | :00:57.
Cannons that were fired at Trafalgar and Waterloo are just part | :00:58. | :01:02.
of the history at the current company in Falkirk. | :01:03. | :01:06.
Since 1759, the narration is of workers also turned out iron | :01:07. | :01:09.
baths, flat irons and Britain's famous red telephone boxes. | :01:10. | :01:13.
At its height, the factory employed 5000 people. | :01:14. | :01:17.
It even operated its own fleet of steamships. | :01:18. | :01:21.
In recent years, granite sinks have been produced on this | :01:22. | :01:23.
The work will be transferred to a factory in Slovakia. | :01:24. | :01:30.
The majority of people have spent all their lives here. | :01:31. | :01:33.
A lot of people, that is all they know, production in there. | :01:34. | :01:41.
The Swiss-based group which owns Carron Phoenix plan to carry | :01:42. | :01:45.
out a phased closure in the next 18 to 20 months. | :01:46. | :02:08.
In a statement, the company said: the company says its decision has | :02:09. | :02:11.
not been taken lightly, but it faces tough competition | :02:12. | :02:13.
It is a decision, though, that will bring to an end 250 years | :02:14. | :02:17.
of history here in Falkirk and leave more than 200 people looking | :02:18. | :02:20.
As we heard, the Scottish TUC described the closure | :02:21. | :02:29.
of Carron Phoenix as another blow to manufacturing here and urged | :02:30. | :02:33.
the political parties fighting the Holyrood elections | :02:34. | :02:35.
The congress also called on all the parties to raise their game, | :02:36. | :02:39.
But the party leaders insist their programmes | :02:40. | :02:45.
will resonate with all of Scotland - including union members. | :02:46. | :02:48.
From Dundee, here's our political editor Brian Taylor. | :02:49. | :02:54.
The trade unions gave birth to the Labour Party | :02:55. | :02:58.
with an occasional Communist bloodline, but Scottish | :02:59. | :03:02.
industry has changed and so has Scottish politics. | :03:03. | :03:06.
The STUC reckons Labour's founder would be unimpressed | :03:07. | :03:11.
with the offering from any party in this election. | :03:12. | :03:14.
He would be asking for more and calling on politicians | :03:15. | :03:22.
to raise their game, to be ambitious for Scotland. | :03:23. | :03:26.
First up at the Congress, Labour's Kezia Dugdale, | :03:27. | :03:30.
deftly avoiding the SNP stand, a reminder that many union members | :03:31. | :03:32.
She promised a new body, skills Scotland, to promote both | :03:33. | :03:38.
jobs and training with a key role for the unions. | :03:39. | :03:42.
And higher taxation to back that up with spending. | :03:43. | :03:45.
We choose to build an economy on higher skills, higher wages | :03:46. | :03:48.
There is no future in low wages and low skills. | :03:49. | :03:57.
Investing in education and skills is not a social expense, | :03:58. | :04:00.
Starting young, Nicola Sturgeon in Glasgow, promoting her party's | :04:01. | :04:11.
plans to help families, including a baby box | :04:12. | :04:13.
She will address the STUC tomorrow, and says her party is more | :04:14. | :04:17.
than ready to engaged with trade unions. | :04:18. | :04:20.
I look forward to speaking to the STUC tomorrow and outlining | :04:21. | :04:25.
the plans of a re-elected SNP government if we win the election | :04:26. | :04:35.
to work with trade unions to oppose Tories' anti-trade union Bill, | :04:36. | :04:37.
but also to support the living wage and make sure | :04:38. | :04:43.
Ruth Davidson was touring here, symbolic of Scottish | :04:44. | :04:46.
She said Labour's thinking was puzzling. | :04:47. | :04:52.
The Labour Party is confused at the moment. | :04:53. | :04:55.
It says it wants to help businesses by combining agencies | :04:56. | :04:57.
that the former First Minister said they should split up | :04:58. | :05:00.
They also say they want to make Scotland the highest | :05:01. | :05:07.
tax power of the UK, which we know were deterred the sort | :05:08. | :05:09.
of jobs and investments that all the businesses | :05:10. | :05:11.
For the Liberal Democrats, Willie Rennie spotlighted challenges | :05:12. | :05:14.
He said the Labour offer on skills Scotland missed the point. | :05:15. | :05:20.
I think organisational change is a distraction. | :05:21. | :05:24.
There is a real challenge for the next five years, | :05:25. | :05:28.
Back at Congress in Dundee, they persuade and cajole. | :05:29. | :05:35.
But it is the voters as a whole across Scotland | :05:36. | :05:39.
The organisers of a multi-faith peace campaign launched | :05:40. | :05:47.
following the death of Glasgow shopkeeper Asad Shah say | :05:48. | :05:51.
they're disappointed Glasgow's Central Mosque | :05:52. | :05:53.
The campaign is sponsored by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community | :05:54. | :05:57.
He was attacked outside his shop last month. | :05:58. | :06:00.
Members of various faith and community groups came together | :06:01. | :06:19.
in to lend their support to new advertising | :06:20. | :06:20.
campaign being launched by the Ahmadi Muslim community. | :06:21. | :06:22.
The message will be seen on 50 buses throughout Glasgow, | :06:23. | :06:25.
Those backing this campaign are keen to promote peace, love and unity, | :06:26. | :06:29.
but they are only too aware that comes against a backdrop | :06:30. | :06:31.
of extremism not just on the world but dangerously close to home. | :06:32. | :06:34.
Last month, 40-year-old Asad Shah was killed at his Glasgow shop | :06:35. | :06:37.
in an attack described by police as religiously prejudiced. | :06:38. | :06:41.
The man charged with his murder, a Bradford taxi driver, | :06:42. | :06:44.
Tanveer Ahmed, was condemned after he released a statement | :06:45. | :06:50.
claiming he had carried out the killing because he believed | :06:51. | :06:53.
The Ahmadi are regarded by orthodox Muslims as heretics, but immediately | :06:54. | :07:01.
after Mr Shah's deaths, Ahmadi, Sunni Muslims | :07:02. | :07:03.
and Pakistani Christians put their differences aside. | :07:04. | :07:06.
At today's event, however, members of Glasgow Central Mosque | :07:07. | :07:11.
and attend despite being invited, and Ahmadi leaders say | :07:12. | :07:15.
By not coming here today, they are giving signals | :07:16. | :07:21.
to the extremists that they are with them, not with us. | :07:22. | :07:28.
Glasgow Central Mosque's president told me he couldn't attend due | :07:29. | :07:32.
to a prior commitment, but he denied he was sending out | :07:33. | :07:35.
the wrong message by not joining the Ahmadis. | :07:36. | :07:37.
It is nice that they are joining now. | :07:38. | :07:39.
We have always had a big responsibility and we have always | :07:40. | :07:44.
glad that we are against extremism and against all the other things | :07:45. | :07:49.
we are not allowed as a good Muslim or a good citizen. | :07:50. | :07:56.
Is part of the problem that you do not consider | :07:57. | :07:58.
Shah's popularity in the community was evident among the floral | :07:59. | :08:18.
It is hoped the day's campaign against extremism will offer some | :08:19. | :08:21.
Parents in Edinburgh are calling for an independent inquiry | :08:22. | :08:32.
into the temporary closure of 17 schools in the city. | :08:33. | :08:34.
They want to know why faults were found in the buildings | :08:35. | :08:37.
which were only constructed about ten years ago. | :08:38. | :08:39.
Most of the children hit by the crisis will resume their | :08:40. | :08:41.
education tomorrow in other schools, temporary classrooms | :08:42. | :08:43.
Some of the biggest names from the entertainment world have | :08:44. | :08:47.
paid their respects at the funeral of Ronnie Corbett. | :08:48. | :08:49.
The Edinburgh-born entertainer died last month aged 85 having been | :08:50. | :08:54.
diagnosed with a suspected form of motor neurone disease. | :08:55. | :08:56.
Famous faces of stage and screen turned out to remember | :08:57. | :09:00.
Ronnie Corbett at a church near his South London home. | :09:01. | :09:04.
Becoming his friend was one of best things that's happened in my career. | :09:05. | :09:08.
He would say, see me on something and be encouraging. | :09:09. | :09:17.
For the entertainment he has given for 50 years. | :09:18. | :09:26.
I can't think of him without smiling. | :09:27. | :09:38.
But it wasn't just the well known who paid tribute. | :09:39. | :09:48.
Members of the local community wanted to remember the man | :09:49. | :09:51.
We used to see him around in his Rolls-Royce. | :09:52. | :09:59.
Been watching him for years and I have seen his wife a few times. | :10:00. | :10:04.
We saw him at the petrol station, he would stop and chat | :10:05. | :10:13.
Edinburgh-born Corbett was regarded as a comedy hero. | :10:14. | :10:32.
He was best known for his partnership with Ronnie Barker. | :10:33. | :10:34.
Despite the sombre tone today, it was a time to remember someone | :10:35. | :11:00.
who made people laugh for many years and probably | :11:01. | :11:04.
Well, it's over to Christopher now with the weather outlook | :11:05. | :11:12.
Thank you. Good. It is bright and most of the week ahead it is dry and | :11:13. | :11:29.
settled in light winds. High pressure building and staying put. | :11:30. | :11:33.
Tonight any last showers turning to lead away. It is dry. Wind is much | :11:34. | :11:41.
lighter. We have seen severe gales. A dry start tomorrow, but chilly at | :11:42. | :11:49.
daybreak. We will post the sun comes up, and the other. Temperature is | :11:50. | :11:55.
around five or seven Celsius. A tad cooler in this countryside and to | :11:56. | :11:59.
the bright with some decent spells of sunshine to get Tuesday going. | :12:00. | :12:03.
Some cloud around bedtimes and the wind much later. Still a freshman | :12:04. | :12:09.
north-westerly with the the day the winds continue to ease through the | :12:10. | :12:13.
course of the morning. As we hit through Tuesday the cloud will tend | :12:14. | :12:16.
to bubble up but it shouldn't spoil things. You can see the | :12:17. | :12:22.
high-pressure indicated by the isobars firmly in charge of | :12:23. | :12:26.
conditions. Dry, sunshine, but workload through West Midlands and | :12:27. | :12:32.
the south-west and Northern Ireland. Most of us dry and write. Here in | :12:33. | :12:37.
Scotland, 11 or 12 or 13 Celsius. As we head through Tuesday afternoon, | :12:38. | :12:43.
staying largely dry. Perhaps a few showers in the north-west. High | :12:44. | :12:50.
pressure still with us but in the Northwest the week by from bringing | :12:51. | :12:55.
some cloud and a few spots of light rain and drizzle. The most of | :12:56. | :12:57.
central, southern and Eastern Scotland dry and fight. Light winds | :12:58. | :13:01.
and temperatures of 212 or 13 Celsius. Thursday and the weather | :13:02. | :13:07.
front slips southwards. Perhaps one or two like showers in the North. | :13:08. | :13:12.
All changed by Friday and the weekend. A cold plunge of Arctic | :13:13. | :13:19.
air. Turning quite chilly some possibly wintry showers. That's the | :13:20. | :13:20.
focus. Our next update is during Breakfast | :13:21. | :13:22.
at 6:25am tomorrow morning. But from everyone on the late | :13:23. | :13:25.
team - goodnight. | :13:26. | :13:34. |
