A senior school in Stirlingshire has been partly closed

Stirling Council says parents and pupils at Balfron High have been

told the school will be shut for S1 to S3 pupils next week.

Older pupils will have to sit their exams in other

parts of the building, which was constructed 15 years ago

using public private funding. Morag Kinniburgh reports.

The scaffolding is up at Balfron High. A wall came down here in the

winter storms. No one was hurt. Further inspections found concerns

with the atrium, stairwell and gym. Stirling Council says repairs are

needed, so the school and leisure centre are partly closed. Those

sitting exams can use an affected part of the building, but there will

be no room here for younger pupils next week. The headteacher has

apologised for the disruption. Stirling Council said: The high

school closing here in Balfron will have an impact on a wide catchment

area. 440 senior one, two and three pupils

will have no school next week, and plans are being put together for

alternative seating arrangements beyond then if needed. There are

many concerns locally. I think my relatives are still going

in to sit exams, but I don't know if they'll be workmen or noise.

There were problems with it from the start, doors falling off, things not

fitting. I think it is pretty rubbish,

actually. They are better off being safe than sorry.

Balfron High was built using a public-private funding model,

similar to those in the Edinburgh public-private funding model,

crisis. Stirling Council says no other schools in its area are

affected. The SNP leader has insisted

she has the backing of a sufficient number of voters

to implement her manifesto. Nicola Sturgeon has also

offered to find common The conservatives, who are now

the main opposition, say they won't let the SNP ride

"roughshod" over the parliament. Here's our political

SNP group met. All 63 of them, but too short of a majority. An historic

victory, particularly in a proportional system. Common ground

would be sought, but... We have a clear and unequivocal

mandate to implement the manifesto that we fought and won this election

on. However, there are crunch issues

where the SNP might struggle. Criticism from the left on the

income tax plans, the Greens will push for a fracking Bang, and there

is opposition to planned cuts in Air Passenger Duty, and the Named Person

legislation, people appointed to monitor children's welfare. They may

not have a majority, but the SNP are still defiant.

Nicola Sturgeon says she will implement a manifesto, and will not

let the other parties stand on the way. But the Conservatives, after

more than doubling their tally and Ruth Davidson, are preparing for a

muscular opposition. She does not have the mandate to try

to run roughshod over the Scottish Parliament in the way that the

Nationalists did in the last Parliament with an overall majority.

This will be a very different five years of Scottish politics.

Labour, bumped down to third place, also said today they want to be a

positive and effective opposition. But when horse trading begins, there

is only one person in a dominant position.

Thank you. It has been the warmest day of the year so far down south,

and that has sparked a fuse thundery downpours, which could come our way

later. For many today, it has been fairly cloudy, hazy sunshine, and

patchy rain in the forecast this evening. Here is the chart, with

brain working its way up the West hand side. In the early hours,

thunderstorms give a glancing blow across the south-west, but should

not last too long. So Mr Mellor ping around North Sea coast, and this is

how we start things tomorrow. One to light showers, certainly some

sunshine by lunchtime, as we will see right across the UK, and

certainly down south, warm if not hot, with temperatures in the

mid-20s. More cloud for Northern Ireland, and certainly for us, we

will seize on very pleasant conditions indeed. Let's take a

closer look at mid-afternoon. In the West, temperatures into the low 20s,

perhaps sparking one to heavy downpours, but there will be hit and

miss and most people will escape them. Further east, a little cooler,

and Chile at times, with a sea breeze at times. In the US, where we

have a high temperatures, shower cloud building at times. -- in the

West. Plenty of sunshine into the evening, perfect barbecue weather.

Looking ahead to next week, Monday, we do it all again. Plenty of

sunshine, dry, fine, bright and warm. If anything, temperatures up a

notch in the West, 23-24 in some spots. Cooler further east, and

cooler still right in the east coast. Tuesday, down south, it is

their turn to have some fairly unsettled conditions, with this

weather from producing wet weather, but further north, for us, dry, fine

weather from producing wet weather, and bright, and temperatures again
