Hello from Glasgow, where we're up all night to bring you referendum

:00:00.:00:11.

We'll have updates for you every hour.

:00:12.:00:16.

There are 32 separate counts in Scotland, one in each

:00:17.:00:18.

We're live at a selection of count centres, from Kirkwall in the north

:00:19.:00:23.

Our political editor Brian Taylor and politics professor Nicola McEwen

:00:24.:00:31.

are here to help make sense of the results.

:00:32.:00:36.

Counting is already well under way across the country.

:00:37.:00:39.

So let's get a sense of how the count process works

:00:40.:00:42.

by going live to our reporters Stephen Godden in Falkirk and, first

:00:43.:00:45.

This is denied, the polls have closed and -- it is Thursday night.

:00:46.:01:09.

The vote will be counted by constituency. The difference is that

:01:10.:01:16.

there will be just one big declaration here and we hope for

:01:17.:01:22.

that just before 3am. The smart money for Glasgow, which is now such

:01:23.:01:31.

an SNP stronghold, is Remain but it will be interesting to see how much

:01:32.:01:35.

of the SNP vote do not agree with the leadership. Turnout we are

:01:36.:01:44.

hearing has been quite good today. We are interested to see whether it

:01:45.:01:50.

is young or old turning out most. My colleague is at the Scottish count

:01:51.:01:55.

HQ. Welcome to the Grangemouth sports

:01:56.:01:58.

complexes at this building has a dual function tonight. The

:01:59.:02:05.

volunteers are already hard at work on counting. They are counting the

:02:06.:02:09.

votes for the Falkirk Council area. It works the same here as in all 32

:02:10.:02:15.

council areas. The votes are verified and counted and then they

:02:16.:02:20.

require permission to declare. That is the second function. This is the

:02:21.:02:24.

regional centre for the EU referendum in Scotland. At the end

:02:25.:02:31.

of the night, we will get to the official total for how Scotland has

:02:32.:02:36.

voted. Unless it comes down to the final Council area we will already

:02:37.:02:41.

know how Scotland has voted. Perhaps it will not come with some of the

:02:42.:02:46.

future you would expect in the election context but it will be

:02:47.:02:49.

loaded with significance which you will no doubt be discussing.

:02:50.:02:58.

How do you expect Scotland to vote? Scotland represents less than a 10th

:02:59.:03:05.

of the overall electorate of the UK but there have been clear and

:03:06.:03:08.

consistent majorities in favour of Remain in Scotland. No doubt it will

:03:09.:03:18.

be one of if not the most enthusiastic nation in the UK to

:03:19.:03:31.

vote Remain. Let's look at a couple of possible scenarios. What of the

:03:32.:03:34.

UK votes to leave and Scotland votes to remain? Whittier from Nicola

:03:35.:03:38.

Sturgeon. I don't think it's any surprise to

:03:39.:03:45.

hear that I think in those circumstances it would be vital for

:03:46.:03:48.

Scotland's voice to be heard directly and for us to sit to our

:03:49.:03:52.

European partners about how we protect our place in Europe and the

:03:53.:03:57.

single market but that is a discussion for Friday if we are in

:03:58.:04:06.

that position because I hope -- but I hope we are not in that position.

:04:07.:04:17.

She is trying to protect Scotland's connection with the EU institutions.

:04:18.:04:26.

She is setting up the respect of a further independence referendum. In

:04:27.:04:29.

the event there is a belief vote in the UK and a -- Leave vote in the UK

:04:30.:04:42.

and a Remain vote in Scotland, she would try to have a second

:04:43.:04:48.

independence referendum. She is seeking power for that to happen. In

:04:49.:04:53.

terms of coverage and the campaign in Scotland, it has been relatively

:04:54.:04:59.

tepid. Boris Johnson was in Scotland today at his daughter's graduation

:05:00.:05:07.

at the University of Saint Andrews. What if Scotland keeps the rest of

:05:08.:05:15.

the UK in? That would be interesting. Those who advocate a

:05:16.:05:22.

Leave vote would complain but they would have no grounds to do so

:05:23.:05:28.

because they were in the campaign in 2014 to keep Scotland in the UK.

:05:29.:05:34.

Nonetheless it would be an entertaining scenario in terms of

:05:35.:05:37.

political tension. Any idea of turnout? Higher than expected. It

:05:38.:05:46.

could potentially benefit Remain. Let's take a quick look at the

:05:47.:05:48.

weather forecast. Many of us have had a fine end to

:05:49.:05:56.

the day with some spells of sunshine. Further towards the west,

:05:57.:06:00.

some showers and these will become more frequent, turning into a longer

:06:01.:06:03.

spells of rain. But all of us will more frequent, turning into a longer

:06:04.:06:09.

stay mild. Showers towards the West will spread further inland. For

:06:10.:06:14.

towards the east coast and the Northern Isles, some mist and low

:06:15.:06:19.

cloud. Temperatures will hold on to double figures. Mild and humid.

:06:20.:06:23.

Tomorrow morning, cloud and rain still with us for a time but

:06:24.:06:26.

throughout the day there will be some sunshine and scattered heavy

:06:27.:06:29.

showers. Some of these have the risk of hail and thunder. Feeling warm

:06:30.:06:40.

again. Saturday is a similar day. Further heavy showers. Perhaps not

:06:41.:06:44.

as torrential as the ones we expect tomorrow. In between the showers

:06:45.:06:49.

there will be some sunny spells and temperatures similar in the mid to

:06:50.:06:50.

high teens. Our next update is

:06:51.:06:52.

at just after 23:30. We expect our first Scottish

:06:53.:07:02.

declaration, possibly Orkney, around midnight.

:07:03.:07:05.
