A 32-year-old man has admitted murdering a Glasgow shopkeeper | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tanveer Ahmed drove from Bradford to Glasgow to kill Asad Shah | :00:00. | :00:09.
at his shop in the Shawlands area of the city. | :00:10. | :00:11.
Aileen Clarke was at the High Court in Glasgow. | :00:12. | :00:29.
Asad Shah, a friendly local shopkeeper, much loved by all of the | :00:30. | :00:36.
community he served in Glasgow. In person, he was chatty and that beat. | :00:37. | :00:42.
He found an outlet on social media, posting his opinions on religion and | :00:43. | :00:48.
humanity. Tanveer Ahmed became aware of these postings and believed Asad | :00:49. | :00:55.
Shah was disrespecting the Prophet Muhammad. The judge was shown CCTV | :00:56. | :01:04.
footage taken from a camera behind the counter of the shop on the night | :01:05. | :01:14.
Asad Shah was attacked. Tanveer Ahmed pulls out a knife and comes | :01:15. | :01:18.
around to Asad Shah 's side of the counter and start stabbing him | :01:19. | :01:23.
repeatedly. More CCTV footage on the road shows Asad Shah being stabbed, | :01:24. | :01:31.
punched, way beyond the point he was able to do anything to defend | :01:32. | :01:35.
himself. There was a huge public outpouring of shock and sympathy in | :01:36. | :01:39.
Glasgow in the days following the murder. He was very friendly and | :01:40. | :01:47.
every morning we shook hands and said good day, have a nice day. Just | :01:48. | :01:52.
a pleasant, lovely lad. Very sad. Everybody is very sad. I was very | :01:53. | :02:03.
upset. A vigil was quickly organised and very well attended. But that | :02:04. | :02:08.
grief all the more acute for Asad Shah 's wife and family, left | :02:09. | :02:14.
devastated, shaken and scared. It has split the family apart since the | :02:15. | :02:24.
incident. Some members of the family have left Scotland or are in the | :02:25. | :02:29.
process of leaving. When the police arrived that night, Asad Shah was | :02:30. | :02:34.
dying on the pavement. Despite the efforts of a doctor and nurse who | :02:35. | :02:39.
came across the scene. Tanveer Ahmed was praying in a bus stop, waiting | :02:40. | :02:44.
for the police, even showing them where his knife was lying. He was | :02:45. | :02:50.
motivated by his own religious beliefs but that is not an excuse to | :02:51. | :02:51.
conduct the actions that he has. beliefs but that is not an excuse to | :02:52. | :02:59.
sentiment echoed by the judge who said Tanveer Ahmed was facing a | :03:00. | :03:02.
lengthy prison sentence for this shocking crime. The shop stays | :03:03. | :03:13.
tightly shuttered. His family cannot face the prospect of running it | :03:14. | :03:14.
without him. The killer of Asad Shah | :03:15. | :03:16.
hasn't shown any remorse. The court heard that Tanveer Ahmed | :03:17. | :03:18.
set out purposefully to carry out the murder, | :03:19. | :03:20.
driving from his home in England. Andrew Kerr reports now | :03:21. | :03:23.
on what might have motivated him. His report contains comments that | :03:24. | :03:25.
you might find upsetting. The city of Bradford and West | :03:26. | :03:39.
Yorkshire, Muslims make up a quarter of the population. This was home for | :03:40. | :03:43.
Tanveer Ahmed and where he first heard about Asad Shah. He had moved | :03:44. | :03:49.
here from Pakistan in 2001 and lived with his wife and family. There was | :03:50. | :03:53.
no hint of his capacity for violence. Preceding the act of the | :03:54. | :03:59.
crime, there was a calmness but the act itself was four minutes of | :04:00. | :04:00.
extreme violence, the likes of which act itself was four minutes of | :04:01. | :04:05.
we have not seen before. This is a unique event in terms of where it | :04:06. | :04:07.
has happened and why it has happened. So why did the religious | :04:08. | :04:12.
musing of say Glasgow newsagent prompt this crime? Tanveer Ahmed has | :04:13. | :04:17.
been clear in this Court statement from April. He said Asad Shah | :04:18. | :04:23.
disrespected the mizzen will grow messenger of Islam, the Prophet | :04:24. | :04:36.
Muhammad. Tanveer Ahmed worked as a taxi driver. He set off before the | :04:37. | :04:41.
Easter weekend, his destination, Glasgow South side. After arriving | :04:42. | :04:47.
here, Tanveer Ahmed stabbed Asad Shah in the shop. The punishment for | :04:48. | :04:51.
what he saw as blasphemy. He made no attempt to escape and was detained | :04:52. | :04:58.
by police at the scene. His Volkswagen remained abandoned in the | :04:59. | :05:04.
street. Tanveer Ahmed 's hardline views to have some mainstream | :05:05. | :05:07.
support in his home country of Pakistan, which has some of the | :05:08. | :05:11.
strictest -- strictest blasphemy laws in the world. The BBC spoke to | :05:12. | :05:20.
Tanveer Ahmed 's brother in Pakistan, who did not denounce his | :05:21. | :05:24.
brother 's actions. Some viewers may find his remarks offensive. | :05:25. | :05:30.
TRANSLATION: Are Prophet is the last prophet. | :05:31. | :05:35.
Asad Shah negated that by telling lies to everyone in a very wrong | :05:36. | :05:40.
way. There was no other way to stop him until his tongue was made | :05:41. | :05:45.
silent. Asad Shah was part of a minority | :05:46. | :05:57.
sect that has faced persecution. But it was his videos posted online | :05:58. | :06:00.
that made him a target for Tanveer Ahmed. If somebody says I am God, | :06:01. | :06:10.
you do not go and kill fat person on that ground, this extreme thinking | :06:11. | :06:17.
has caused this murder. Asad Shah was confronted with extreme thinking | :06:18. | :06:22.
and extreme violence. One mad when simply not tolerate the views of | :06:23. | :06:23.
another. -- one man. Earlier tonight, I spoke | :06:24. | :06:27.
to Shaima Khalil, the BBC's I asked her to explain the specific | :06:28. | :06:29.
background to this case. To understand what inspired Tanveer | :06:30. | :06:43.
Ahmed to do what he did, we have to talk about a man called Mumtaz Qadri | :06:44. | :06:46.
in Pakistan. This is the man who has become the symbol of the kind of | :06:47. | :06:53.
violence that the issue of trust me inspires and provoke. This is a man | :06:54. | :06:57.
who killed the governor of Punjab province five years ago because he | :06:58. | :07:00.
spoke out about -- against the blasphemy law. He was imprisoned for | :07:01. | :07:07.
five years and then hanged. But to many of his borders, they still | :07:08. | :07:10.
think of him as a hero, the man who defended the religion and the | :07:11. | :07:16.
profit. It is not just Pakistan where he enjoys support. He also | :07:17. | :07:18.
profit. It is not just Pakistan enjoys supporting the UK. The | :07:19. | :07:25.
religious leader of a mosque in Glasgow expressed regret at his | :07:26. | :07:29.
execution. Tanveer Ahmed was quite inspired by him. We spoke to Mumtaz | :07:30. | :07:34.
Qadri 's brother who said that Tanveer Ahmed was in close contact | :07:35. | :07:38.
with Mumtaz Qadri when he was in jail and he sent him messages and he | :07:39. | :07:41.
even had a dream about him, saying that Mumtaz Qadri was chosen for a | :07:42. | :07:46.
sitting duty. According to Mumtaz Qadri 's brother, Tanveer Ahmed was | :07:47. | :07:53.
very much inspired by what Mumtaz Qadri did and subsequently went | :07:54. | :07:58.
ahead to Glasgow and killed Asad Shah. | :07:59. | :08:07.
Investigations are continuing into a fatal crash in Argyll | :08:08. | :08:10.
yesterday, in which two young children died. | :08:11. | :08:12.
A car skidded off the road into a loch just north of Kilmelford | :08:13. | :08:15.
It was here at Loch nan Druimnean that the tragedy occurred at around | :08:16. | :08:27.
4pm yesterday afternoon. A car skidded off the road and into the | :08:28. | :08:32.
water. A 36-year-old woman managed to free herself. She was treated in | :08:33. | :08:37.
hospital and later released but two toddlers remained trapped within the | :08:38. | :08:41.
vehicle. Eyewitnesses who were on the scene shortly afterwards said | :08:42. | :08:46.
they could see no sign of the submerged car and a full-scale | :08:47. | :08:48.
emergency operation was then launched. We just noticed a lot of | :08:49. | :08:53.
emergency vehicles going up the hill and an hour or so later on, the | :08:54. | :08:55.
helicopter turned up, did not seem and an hour or so later on, the | :08:56. | :09:02.
to stay long. And then the road was blocked. The emergency services | :09:03. | :09:11.
recover the car in the early hours of this morning but unfortunately, | :09:12. | :09:16.
the two children were dead. Local people say this stretch of road is | :09:17. | :09:20.
notoriously dangerous and there have been several accidents here in the | :09:21. | :09:23.
past. Yesterday's events have stand this village community whose | :09:24. | :09:29.
population numbers less than 200. This afternoon, police named the two | :09:30. | :09:36.
children as Seth and Leia McCorrisken. They issued a plea to | :09:37. | :09:40.
anyone who may have witnessed the events surrounding the accident to | :09:41. | :09:43.
contact them as their investigations into the crash continue. | :09:44. | :09:45.
The Scottish government says it will reconsider | :09:46. | :09:46.
the remit of its inquiry into historic child abuse. | :09:47. | :09:48.
Education Secretary, John Swinney, met with survivor | :09:49. | :09:50.
groups today in the wake of the resignation of the inquiry's | :09:51. | :09:53.
Mr Swinney also moved to reassure survivors the inquiry would be | :09:54. | :09:56.
An inspection of Aberdeen Crematorium has found some staff | :09:57. | :10:04.
believe they were "victims" of the national investigation | :10:05. | :10:06.
A visit by Inspector of Crematoria Scotland Robert | :10:07. | :10:09.
Swanson was made three days after the publication of | :10:10. | :10:12.
That inquiry, by Dame Elish Angiolini, uncovered "unethical | :10:13. | :10:14.
and abhorrent practices" at Aberdeen Crematorium. | :10:15. | :10:16.
Mr Swanson, however, said he found "good practice" | :10:17. | :10:18.
Thousands of people are heading to the T in the Park music | :10:19. | :10:36.
festival in Perthshire, where music fans are busy setting up | :10:37. | :10:39.
Last year was the first time the event was held | :10:40. | :10:43.
at Strathallan Castle, and there was traffic chaos | :10:44. | :10:45.
Organisers have introduced new measures, such as the | :10:46. | :10:48.
introduction of bus station on site, to try and avoid a repeat | :10:49. | :10:51.
Aberdeen are through to the next stage of the Europa League, | :10:52. | :10:59.
despite losing to minnows Fola Esch tonight. | :11:00. | :11:01.
In a dismal performance, the team from Luxembourg won 1-0, | :11:02. | :11:04.
but Aberdeen's first leg victory at Pittodrie means they | :11:05. | :11:06.
The Dons live to fight another day and will face Latvian side Ventspils | :11:07. | :11:10.
in the second qualifying round, with the first leg at home next | :11:11. | :11:13.
Well, it's over to Judith Ralston now with the weather outlook | :11:14. | :11:19.
Good evening. The weather seems to be changing every 12 hours. There is | :11:20. | :11:31.
rain coming our way but earlier on, we had someone the full sunshine. | :11:32. | :11:38.
That weather front now making its way in across the UK, introducing a | :11:39. | :11:44.
mix of rain pretty much everywhere. It will be a mild night across the | :11:45. | :11:48.
board. A mild start tomorrow. The temperatures we are seeing at the | :11:49. | :11:52.
moment are what we will see tomorrow morning. Residual rain affecting | :11:53. | :11:59.
many areas initially. The winds will start to freshen as we head through | :12:00. | :12:04.
the day as well. As far as the rest of the morning is concerned, the | :12:05. | :12:08.
rain will pull away into the North Sea and it will brighten up | :12:09. | :12:12.
tomorrow. A risk of catching one or two showers. Something brighter for | :12:13. | :12:18.
the West, the best of the sunshine across eastern Scotland. A few | :12:19. | :12:23.
showers for Northern Ireland. A fairly cloudy picture for the UK but | :12:24. | :12:27.
it will brighten up as well. But a bank of cloud along the south coast. | :12:28. | :12:33.
We will lose the rain. Good news for Andy Murray. It should be dry and | :12:34. | :12:39.
warm. Temperatures in Scotland, I think it will be warm. 22 Celsius | :12:40. | :12:44.
across parts of eastern Scotland, where we see the best of the | :12:45. | :12:51.
sunshine. Tomorrow evening ends on a largely dry note. It'll be fine but | :12:52. | :12:55.
then we start see the beginnings of the rain feeding into the far west. | :12:56. | :13:00.
It is this area of low pressure that will bring us our weather this | :13:01. | :13:06.
weekend. Also outbreaks of rain. Starting off Dell with outbreaks of | :13:07. | :13:09.
rain on Saturday. The rain becoming confined to the North. Becoming | :13:10. | :13:16.
drier elsewhere. It will brighten up with some sunshine. It will feel | :13:17. | :13:18.
warm. Quite humid. Our next update is during Breakfast | :13:19. | :13:22.
at 6:25 tomorrow morning. But, from everyone on the late team | :13:23. | :13:27.
here in Glasgow and around | :13:28. | :13:31. |
