The Prime Minister says she'll listen to all options for Scotland

:00:08.:00:13.

to have a different relationship with the EU.

:00:14.:00:15.

Theresa May was visiting Edinburgh on only her second day in the post -

:00:16.:00:18.

where she also dismissed the prospect of another

:00:19.:00:20.

However, the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said independence was "part

:00:21.:00:24.

and parcel" of the debate surrounding the UK's exit

:00:25.:00:26.

Our political correspondent Andrew Kerr reports.

:00:27.:00:33.

In her new role, it seems Theresa May doesn't want any

:00:34.:00:36.

barriers to discussions with the First Minister.

:00:37.:00:38.

The police were highly visible outside Nicola Sturgeon's

:00:39.:00:40.

Both women pledged to cooperate on security

:00:41.:00:44.

Inside, another fireside chat on a rainy day.

:00:45.:01:00.

Another pledge, as the First Minister seeks to protect Scotland's

:01:01.:01:02.

relationship with the EU, the Prime Minister's

:01:03.:01:04.

I want to get the best possible deal for the United Kingdom

:01:05.:01:08.

out of our negotiations for a United Kingdom leaving the EU.

:01:09.:01:10.

But I am willing to listen to options.

:01:11.:01:12.

I have been clear with the First Minister today that I want

:01:13.:01:15.

the Scottish Government to be fully engaged in our discussions,

:01:16.:01:17.

I will listen to any options they put forward.

:01:18.:01:21.

As curious bystanders watched, the Prime Minister did note

:01:22.:01:23.

the people already had their say on an independence referendum

:01:24.:01:35.

but the First Minister has been quite clear throughout this debate.

:01:36.:01:38.

The question of independence is part and parcel of all of this debate

:01:39.:01:41.

just now, it has to be, because of the situation Scotland

:01:42.:01:44.

finds itself in, through no fault of our own.

:01:45.:01:46.

But I wanted to be clear with the Prime Minister,

:01:47.:01:48.

as I have been clear with the Scottish people,

:01:49.:01:50.

that my job as First Minister is to examine all options

:01:51.:01:53.

and that is the approach I continue to take.

:01:54.:02:00.

Two powerful characters, attempting to provide strong leadership. That

:02:01.:02:07.

is where the similarity ends. One is committed to preserving the union,

:02:08.:02:11.

the other is fighting for independence. And now their views on

:02:12.:02:15.

Brexit completely differ. A short meeting but a significant one.

:02:16.:02:21.

Theresa May had been determined to visit Scotland as soon as possible.

:02:22.:02:27.

She may want to listen, but is she trying to tie other parties into the

:02:28.:02:35.

Brexit negotiations, to -- so they can't disagree afterwards. Is this a

:02:36.:02:41.

trick to trap the SNP into the negotiations? Know, is an attempt to

:02:42.:02:45.

involve everyone in the negotiations, as it should be. I

:02:46.:02:48.

think it is important that the new Prime Minister came to make that

:02:49.:02:54.

offer, to say what that -- to say we want you on board. I think it is

:02:55.:02:59.

significant that that is what she did. Prime ministers may depend on

:03:00.:03:04.

clever political tactics to survive just as they depend on their high

:03:05.:03:07.

security bubble in this most rarefied of jobs. Mrs May saw the

:03:08.:03:16.

predecessor's career topple by a referendum -- through a referendum.

:03:17.:03:19.

She will try not to make the same mistake.

:03:20.:03:20.

Theresa May is now back in Downing Street after a tumultuous

:03:21.:03:22.

Our Westminster correspondent Nick Eardley was there -

:03:23.:03:28.

It is strange to think that on Monday, the Prime Minister was

:03:29.:03:41.

relaxed in the building behind me, thinking he had a couple of months.

:03:42.:03:46.

But it has been a fast moving few days and Scotland high on the

:03:47.:03:50.

agenda. Reflecting on the first beat that Theresa May gave as Prime

:03:51.:03:54.

Minister, around a metre away from where I am now. She mentioned as a

:03:55.:03:58.

first policy, the union between Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales

:03:59.:04:05.

and England. She said her precious it was to her and her party. And the

:04:06.:04:10.

symbolism of her first trip being north of the border to Nicholl

:04:11.:04:17.

surgeon. It is not whether the two women will find a deal that

:04:18.:04:21.

satisfies the Scottish Government's games and the keen Brexiteers who

:04:22.:04:26.

are in Mrs May's new cabinet. But a sense tonight that after those talks

:04:27.:04:31.

there is a desire to listen and to speak more in the future and try to

:04:32.:04:32.

find a solution. Around Scotland people have been

:04:33.:04:35.

paying their respects to those who were killed and injured

:04:36.:04:38.

in the attack in Nice last night. Flags have been flying at half mast

:04:39.:04:40.

on many public buildings. In Glasgow, a show of Solidarity

:04:41.:04:52.

between the Scots and the French. As the Lord Provost pays her respects

:04:53.:05:05.

to those died in Nice -- knees last night, -- in Nice last night, the

:05:06.:05:10.

Prime Minister spoke. My heart goes out to those people who suffered in

:05:11.:05:15.

Nice, and our hearts go out to France, which suffered more than any

:05:16.:05:21.

should have to. In Edinburgh, all the flags were at half-mast.

:05:22.:05:26.

Scotland's capital is twinned with Nice and much sympathy here for the

:05:27.:05:30.

horror. A book of condolence has been started as people come to terms

:05:31.:05:34.

with another act of terrorism on French soil. We have seen in the

:05:35.:05:38.

last year with the attacks in January and November, that our

:05:39.:05:45.

society is resilient and its resilience is building up. So I

:05:46.:05:51.

think we are very deeply affected, collectively, but at the same time

:05:52.:05:55.

we are proud that we are able to hold our values and our national

:05:56.:06:03.

unity. The golfers at the Open chose to pay their respects by wearing a

:06:04.:06:10.

black ribbon. But one amongst them was giving it more than most. Nice

:06:11.:06:17.

is home to this golfer. I live in Nice. It happened about 500 metres

:06:18.:06:23.

from where I live. All I can say is that it's a really sad situation and

:06:24.:06:26.

I give my thoughts to all of the families and to the people who died.

:06:27.:06:33.

At the homeless World Cup in Glasgow city centre, a silence before one of

:06:34.:06:38.

the French teams played a specially arranged friendly. Support and

:06:39.:06:41.

sympathy openly offered by players from around the world.

:06:42.:06:44.

Two women convicted of the murder of toddler Liam Fee

:06:45.:06:47.

Papers have been lodged at the High Court in Edinburgh -

:06:48.:06:52.

the first stage in the legal process before an appeal can be considered.

:06:53.:06:55.

Liam's mother Rachel Fee and her civil partner Nyomi Fee

:06:56.:06:57.

were sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder and the abuse of two

:06:58.:07:01.

A 44-year-old man has been arrested in Paisley on suspicion of making

:07:02.:07:08.

threats to kill the Labour leadership challenger, Angela Eagle.

:07:09.:07:12.

Officers from Merseyside Police detained him this morning

:07:13.:07:15.

The arrest comes after an email was sent to the Wallasey MP's account.

:07:16.:07:23.

American Phil Mickelson leads the Open Championship at the halfway

:07:24.:07:26.

stage by a shot over Swedish challenger Henrik Stenson.

:07:27.:07:30.

Mickelson is ten under at the Royal Troon course.

:07:31.:07:33.

Scotland's Russel Knox is at even par, while Paul Lawrie

:07:34.:07:37.

and Colin Montgomerie just made the cut on four over.

:07:38.:07:44.

Well, it's over to Kawser now with the weather outlook

:07:45.:07:46.

A poor day for the open and for many of us outbreaks of rain. But to end

:07:47.:08:04.

the evening, some right spells. As we head through the night, it will

:08:05.:08:09.

be mostly cloudy. There will be some clear spells towards the east and

:08:10.:08:13.

for all, becoming drier throughout the night. Temperatures dipping.

:08:14.:08:25.

There is a low behind this front and although it is holding to you

:08:26.:08:29.

midair, we will see fresh conditions tomorrow morning. Fresh across the

:08:30.:08:34.

north-west of the country. Strong south-westerly winds. For most,

:08:35.:08:40.

largely dry. If you are heading out around 9am tomorrow, largely dry

:08:41.:08:43.

conditions around the south-west, the Borders, the central belt too.

:08:44.:08:48.

Glimmers of brightness in the south. Breezy conditions across the

:08:49.:08:54.

country. The winds stronger across the Hebrides. Some short, sharp

:08:55.:08:59.

showers there and in the Northern Isles as well. That cold front still

:09:00.:09:06.

across central parts of England. One two showers which may be thundering

:09:07.:09:12.

as well. In the year midair, 26 to 28 centigrade. -- Celsius. Some

:09:13.:09:19.

glimmers of brightness towards the east. For the golfing will be drier

:09:20.:09:25.

tomorrow, and the prospect of rain later. Sunday, a return to wet

:09:26.:09:32.

conditions. Particularly breezy which may make challenging

:09:33.:09:35.

conditions for the players on the course. Towards the end of the

:09:36.:09:39.

weekend, that front will slip further to the south. Behind it,

:09:40.:09:43.

fresh or conditions so on Sunday there will be outbreaks of rain,

:09:44.:09:49.

towards the west and the south-west. Dry elsewhere towards the east and

:09:50.:09:50.

the south of the UK. Our next update is tomorrow

:09:51.:09:52.

evening at five to six. But, from everyone on the late team

:09:53.:09:56.

here in Glasgow and around

:09:57.:10:00.
