There's a large police presence at this bombing range | :00:00. | :00:13.
in the Highlands, as they continue to investigate the death | :00:14. | :00:15.
of a soldier during a live firing exercise. | :00:16. | :00:17.
Opposition MSPs out-vote the SNP and call for the repeal | :00:18. | :00:20.
of the Offensive Behaviour at Football Act. | :00:21. | :00:23.
It's fifty years since five people tragically died | :00:24. | :00:27.
when Aberdeen University's zoology building collapsed. | :00:28. | :00:33.
Memories of the rescue operation live on. | :00:34. | :00:37.
We made a chain of human firemen to the entrance of it. And I said when | :00:38. | :00:44.
I give the word pulled you are coming out. | :00:45. | :00:47.
Also on the programme, the Scotland manager Gordon Strachan | :00:48. | :00:49.
is adamant he didn't consider quitting his post following | :00:50. | :00:52.
a disappointing start to the World Cup qualifying campaign. | :00:53. | :00:58.
The government called in the National Guard. | :00:59. | :01:01.
And we'll be on the red carpet with Ewan McGregor | :01:02. | :01:04.
An MoD firing range in the Highlands is under lockdown tonight 24 hours | :01:05. | :01:19.
after a soldier was killed during a live firing exercise. | :01:20. | :01:24.
There is still a big police presence and details are scant, | :01:25. | :01:32.
although police say there is no risk to the local community. | :01:33. | :01:34.
Our reporter Craig Anderston is there. | :01:35. | :01:37.
No more than we knew a ago. It was around six o'clock | :01:38. | :01:50.
yesterday evening that police and ambulance crews raced to this range, | :01:51. | :01:56.
30 miles north of Inverness, amid reports that an incident had | :01:57. | :02:01.
occurred during a live firing exercise involving troops. Now the | :02:02. | :02:07.
police issued a statement in the early hours of this morning saying | :02:08. | :02:12.
that, tragically, one person was dead but they insisted no one else | :02:13. | :02:17.
had been injured, that the incident, as they called it, had been | :02:18. | :02:20.
contained, and they were adamant that there had been no threat to the | :02:21. | :02:22.
public. Although primarily a bombing range | :02:23. | :02:29.
for the RAF and carries out target practice here the Tain range has | :02:30. | :02:33.
increasingly been used by the army. Yesterday troops were taking part in | :02:34. | :02:37.
a training exercise using live ammunition. It is thought more than | :02:38. | :02:42.
20 members of the Black Watch based at Fort George near Inverness were | :02:43. | :02:46.
involved. The death of their colleague has sparked an intensive | :02:47. | :02:50.
investigation. We've got 30 detectives that we've allocated to | :02:51. | :02:55.
the inquiry, we have initially resourced from Tain and we are | :02:56. | :02:58.
taking more officers from across Scotland to support the inquiry, we | :02:59. | :03:04.
also have more officers on the scene of controlling entry and monitoring | :03:05. | :03:07.
the scene to support the investigation. Since 2135 UK Armed | :03:08. | :03:14.
Forces personnel have died on exercises or training, a level of | :03:15. | :03:19.
them in live firing operations. Two months ago Black Watch Private Conor | :03:20. | :03:25.
McPherson from Paisley was shot dead in a live firing exercise in | :03:26. | :03:30.
Northumberland. I have a daughter serving in the Royal Air Force and I | :03:31. | :03:34.
was on that editorial army myself. I know the training needs to be of the | :03:35. | :03:37.
highest possible standard and this must include live firing but we had | :03:38. | :03:43.
yesterday's tragic events. So I am saying this is to be an exhaustive | :03:44. | :03:48.
inquiry. Whatever it takes to find out what happened. The local MP has | :03:49. | :03:52.
called for a full inquiry to put community concerns are addressed. | :03:53. | :03:56.
Meanwhile both the Prime Minister and First Minister have offered | :03:57. | :03:58.
their condolences to the family of the victim. | :03:59. | :04:02.
The Minister of defence tonight said they were offering their full | :04:03. | :04:06.
support to the family of the victims. Yet 24 hours and there are | :04:07. | :04:11.
still more questions than answers over this incident. For instance | :04:12. | :04:17.
there is no confirmation of the identity of the servicemen who has | :04:18. | :04:20.
died. We don't know where they were based which regiment they came from. | :04:21. | :04:26.
And crucially as this major inquiry continues, the police cannot say | :04:27. | :04:32.
whether this was in some ways a deliberate act or a tragic accident. | :04:33. | :04:33.
Thank you, Craig. MSPs have voted to urge | :04:34. | :04:36.
the Scottish government to repeal its Offensive Behaviour | :04:37. | :04:38.
at Football Act. Opposition parties united behind | :04:39. | :04:40.
a motion condemning the legislation, which was designed to tackle | :04:41. | :04:49.
sectarianism at football matches, Our Political Correspondent Andrew | :04:50. | :04:51.
Kerr watched the debate. Keeping an eye out for offensive | :04:52. | :05:00.
behaviour at the football but for how much longer with the police | :05:01. | :05:06.
operate under the current laws? I call on Douglas Ross... Blount the | :05:07. | :05:10.
opposition rounded on the government and Holyrood calling for legislation | :05:11. | :05:14.
to be appealed in the appropriate language. They are behaving like a | :05:15. | :05:18.
football club that have used all their subs but would rather leave an | :05:19. | :05:22.
injured player on the pitch rather than removing him for a benefit for | :05:23. | :05:25.
their team. There are moments when a change in criminal law is | :05:26. | :05:31.
appropriate and in this case the view of legal practitioners is that | :05:32. | :05:33.
they were already adequate laws in place and those should be used to | :05:34. | :05:37.
prosecute this behaviour rather than verifying football and its thousands | :05:38. | :05:43.
of fans. Defending the government line, the minister said the powers | :05:44. | :05:47.
are being used by the authorities. I would point out that the statistics | :05:48. | :05:51.
clearly demonstrate that the prosecution rate for the act is | :05:52. | :05:55.
comparable to other prosecution rates. The latest information covers | :05:56. | :06:01.
2014-15 and shows that proceedings have been carried out so far in 19 | :06:02. | :06:06.
places, 76 people convicted, a conviction rate of 84%. Backed up | :06:07. | :06:12.
from the backbenches, today's events have been described as an opposition | :06:13. | :06:20.
ploy. That has nothing to do with trying to improve the legislation | :06:21. | :06:23.
and everything to do with trying to defeat the government. This is a | :06:24. | :06:28.
political stunt. But the opposition, still smarting, claimed the | :06:29. | :06:32.
legislation was pushed through without regard women as NP have the | :06:33. | :06:37.
power to do so. It was introduced and believed by the Justice | :06:38. | :06:41.
Secretary and by government showing scant regard for this parliament for | :06:42. | :06:45.
civil liberties over the complexities of the problem they | :06:46. | :06:49.
sought to address. Time for an early bath for this legislation, said, the | :06:50. | :06:56.
government was then defeated. Yes, 64, no, 63, the motion is therefore | :06:57. | :07:02.
agreed. Labour now see the act is dead in the water and want action. | :07:03. | :07:06.
The government must therefore bring forward immediate plans on how they | :07:07. | :07:10.
will repeal this act as a matter of urgency. The presiding officer said | :07:11. | :07:17.
Parliament had made its view clear, it was up to the Scottish Government | :07:18. | :07:23.
to reflect on how to respond. Andrew care, Reporting Scotland. | :07:24. | :07:26.
I'm joined from Holyrood by our political editor Brian Taylor. | :07:27. | :07:28.
Brian, has the government given any reaction? | :07:29. | :07:30.
They have, they say they will review the act. We should add that the | :07:31. | :07:37.
government only escaped in defeat tonight on an NHS motion because the | :07:38. | :07:43.
Green party voted with them. On this football act all the opposition | :07:44. | :07:48.
parties voted together to defeat the government 64-63. We caught up | :07:49. | :07:52.
shortly after the vote with the Justice Secretary, Michael Matheson. | :07:53. | :07:57.
Mainly unanswered questions from the opposition parties. They have to be | :07:58. | :08:03.
addressed. This legislation deals with more than tackling offensive | :08:04. | :08:08.
behaviour, it also deals with certain communications which can be | :08:09. | :08:12.
used as well. We need to make sure we address these issues when looking | :08:13. | :08:16.
at these matters. I think if we did not do that it would be reckless and | :08:17. | :08:20.
some of the behaviour that we saw from the opposition today is | :08:21. | :08:26.
bordering on reckless. Strong words. At the end of an acerbic debate. Do | :08:27. | :08:32.
I think that he will tear up the act and start a game? I don't. I think | :08:33. | :08:38.
he will do one of two things, on the online are threatening to medication | :08:39. | :08:41.
is adamant, an area where he believes this is vital to Scotland, | :08:42. | :08:45.
he will challenge those opposition parties that voted against the act | :08:46. | :08:49.
tonight to say what they would do in its place. They say you don't need | :08:50. | :08:55.
anything in its place, scrapped the act and rely on existing static is | :08:56. | :08:57.
like a breach of the peace. They will be a detailed review. I don't | :08:58. | :09:01.
think the act will stay as it is, I think there needs to be change. To | :09:02. | :09:06.
be simple, Parliament has spoken. Thank you. | :09:07. | :09:08.
Senior politicians from across the political divide in Scotland | :09:09. | :09:10.
have endorsed the Prime Minsiter's criticism of football's | :09:11. | :09:12.
Theresa May has described the actions by Fifa | :09:13. | :09:17.
as "utterly outrageous" for banning Scottish and English footballers | :09:18. | :09:19.
from wearing poppies during their World Cup qualifier | :09:20. | :09:21.
A Labour MP has been cleared of attacking a Yes | :09:22. | :09:32.
in Glasgow on the day of the independence referendum. | :09:33. | :09:36.
Marie Rimmer, who's the MP for St Helens South and Whiston, | :09:37. | :09:38.
faced two charges following an incident outside | :09:39. | :09:42.
Shettleston Community Centre on 18th September 2014. | :09:43. | :09:44.
Yesterday, the 69-year-old was cleared of a charge of abusive | :09:45. | :09:47.
Today, Ms Rimmer was acquitted of assaulting 52-year-old | :09:48. | :09:51.
Patricia McLeish by kicking her, after a sheriff found the case | :09:52. | :09:54.
I am absolutely delighted and very, very grateful and thankful for and | :09:55. | :10:07.
support that everybody has put in with me. I want to really get back | :10:08. | :10:13.
now to go on and do the job I was elected to do, representing my | :10:14. | :10:16.
constituents in St Helens and wisdom. | :10:17. | :10:19.
A memorial service is being held this evening | :10:20. | :10:21.
to remember those who died when Aberdeen University's Zoology | :10:22. | :10:23.
It was under construction on November 1st 1966, | :10:24. | :10:31.
when the steel and concrete frame failed with tragic consequences. | :10:32. | :10:33.
Our reporter Steven Duff has been speaking to two men | :10:34. | :10:37.
When I arrived there, I was absolutely appalled and could not | :10:38. | :10:54.
understand how we could deal with the situation. It was one pile of | :10:55. | :11:00.
steel girders, steel pipes, concrete, and everything else. I had | :11:01. | :11:08.
seen the buildings standing, it was eight stories high, and suddenly | :11:09. | :11:13.
there were eight stories, fallen on a house of cards, I felt that if you | :11:14. | :11:21.
had stood you could have touched the top floor. Five people lost their | :11:22. | :11:27.
lives that day in 1966, these are one building at Aberdeen University | :11:28. | :11:31.
which was under construction collapsed. 92-year-old John Burgess | :11:32. | :11:36.
was senior fire officer in charge that today. He helped to rescue one | :11:37. | :11:40.
of three workers who survived after being buried in the rubble. That's | :11:41. | :11:45.
me. We made a chain of human firemen to the entrance of it. I said, when | :11:46. | :11:50.
I give the word Paul, you are coming out. I yelled at the top of my | :11:51. | :11:59.
voice, pull, and I could shout in those days. And we all came out and | :12:00. | :12:03.
the only injury he got was the abrasions we called pulling him out | :12:04. | :12:07.
of this little part with he was -- the abrasions that we caused. Good | :12:08. | :12:13.
in case we had been a news reporter for only eight days when he was sent | :12:14. | :12:17.
to the scene of the collapse. He remembers the final survivor | :12:18. | :12:20.
emerging. I don't remember any emotion, none of the cheering or | :12:21. | :12:25.
applauding you to get nowadays. He was helped to an ambulance, is a | :12:26. | :12:31.
militia kiss hands, -- somebody shook his hands, we were awfully | :12:32. | :12:37.
glad to see a survivor. After the tragedy, the construction was | :12:38. | :12:39.
completed and the building stands today. This evening 50 years on a | :12:40. | :12:46.
service of remembrance at Aberdeen University for the five men who lost | :12:47. | :12:50.
their lives. Stephen Duff, Reporting Scotland, Aberdeen. It's just after | :12:51. | :12:56.
20 minutes to seven. A bombing range in the Highlands | :12:57. | :12:58.
is cordoned off as the investigation continues into the death | :12:59. | :13:03.
of a soldier. Celtic players believe they can beat | :13:04. | :13:04.
the Catalans in Glasgow One of Scotland's biggest energy | :13:05. | :13:10.
providers says onshore wind development will come | :13:11. | :13:20.
to a standstill if the UK Government The Conservatives made a general | :13:21. | :13:22.
election pledge to end Our environment correspondent | :13:23. | :13:27.
Kevin Keane reports. When all of these blades are fitted | :13:28. | :13:42.
this one wind farm will contain almost 100 turbines. They will | :13:43. | :13:47.
generate enough electricity to power 150,000 homes. And this has been | :13:48. | :13:52.
replicated across Scotland. It is a Windrush and from the air the scale | :13:53. | :13:57.
of the construction work is clear. This is one of eight wind farm | :13:58. | :14:02.
projects being undertaken by ScottishPower alone. To qualify for | :14:03. | :14:06.
subsidies they need to be built and running by the end of March. What | :14:07. | :14:10.
happens to this industry then is not clear. In stark terms the industry | :14:11. | :14:15.
will come to a standstill, it's impossible to move forward now | :14:16. | :14:18.
without some kind of framework mechanism to work with the | :14:19. | :14:21.
government to allow this activity to carry on. What we are asking for is | :14:22. | :14:26.
a level playing field, a contract to help underpin some of the risks of | :14:27. | :14:31.
making these big long-term investments. We are not asking for a | :14:32. | :14:36.
subsidy, just a contract to underpin the risk of the investment. With | :14:37. | :14:42.
that guarantee would come more security for jobs, thousands are | :14:43. | :14:45.
employed in construction, the industry says there is strong | :14:46. | :14:49.
potential for more onshore wind in Scotland but not without a | :14:50. | :14:50.
commitment. We are saturated. The UK Government | :14:51. | :15:13.
says its focus now is on offshore wind which will be subsidised, but | :15:14. | :15:18.
renewable firms think Scotland is being let down. The UK Government | :15:19. | :15:23.
has locked future development out of the energy market. If we are to | :15:24. | :15:27.
stand any chance of meeting our climate change targets, we need to | :15:28. | :15:31.
double our renewable energy capacity. It is vital the UK | :15:32. | :15:35.
Government tells us what the future of onshore wind is going to be and | :15:36. | :15:40.
allow it to compete in that energy market. The race is on to get all | :15:41. | :15:44.
these wind farms finished by the deadline at the end of March. What | :15:45. | :15:49.
happens after that, is up in the air. | :15:50. | :15:50.
A look at other stories from across the country. | :15:51. | :15:53.
Aberdeen City Council has become the first local authority | :15:54. | :15:55.
The stock market bonds, worth ?370 million, | :15:56. | :15:58.
will go towards the council's capital plan, which includes | :15:59. | :16:00.
redeveloping the city centre, building schools and houses, | :16:01. | :16:03.
A Glasgow hospital has failed to improve the cleanliness of some | :16:04. | :16:09.
equipment in operating theatres despite concerns being | :16:10. | :16:11.
Health inspectors issued a requirement in 2015 that | :16:12. | :16:16.
Gartnavel Hospital should ensure the equipment was "clean | :16:17. | :16:18.
A follow up visit in August found this requirement had not been met, | :16:19. | :16:22.
although other improvements had been made. | :16:23. | :16:24.
Health officials said action would be taken | :16:25. | :16:27.
Borders-based Spark Energy is to create 69 new jobs | :16:28. | :16:34.
The announcement was made at the official opening | :16:35. | :16:37.
of its in-house training centre, the Spark Academy, | :16:38. | :16:39.
The 69 posts will take total staff numbers to over 400. | :16:40. | :16:50.
An orphaned grey seal pup found washed up on an Aberdeenshire beach | :16:51. | :16:53.
has become the first of the season to be cared for at the Scottish | :16:54. | :16:56.
SPCA's national wildlife rescue centre at Fishcross in | :16:57. | :16:58.
The pup, just a few days old, has been named Snowy by staff. | :16:59. | :17:04.
It is being rehydrated and will then be fed a diet of fish soup, | :17:05. | :17:07.
The Scotland manager Gordon Strachan says he didn't | :17:08. | :17:16.
consider quitting his post following a disappointing | :17:17. | :17:18.
start to the world cup qualifying campaign. | :17:19. | :17:21.
He's just named his squad for next week's world qualifier | :17:22. | :17:23.
As expected, his former captain Scott Brown has been | :17:24. | :17:27.
picked after coming out of international retirement. | :17:28. | :17:29.
Back in Scotland and back in the national squad. Celtic's inform | :17:30. | :17:45.
captain, returning home with his club at the Champions League duty in | :17:46. | :17:53.
Germany. Soon, he will be reunited with the Scotland manager, following | :17:54. | :17:56.
a short lived international retirement. The backroom staff have | :17:57. | :18:05.
done a final build-up conversation that went on. He was thinking about | :18:06. | :18:13.
trying to get back in the squad and making himself available. From then, | :18:14. | :18:16.
we checked it out and that is the case. We spoke on the phone and we | :18:17. | :18:23.
are back together again. Is the reunion and long-term thing or a one | :18:24. | :18:27.
night stand, beginning and ending with the game against England at | :18:28. | :18:36.
Wembley. Hopefully it is a decision we are all happy with. Then after | :18:37. | :18:41.
that we will decide what the future is for everybody. That will be the | :18:42. | :18:47.
process. What about the manager's commitments? His resolve to stay in | :18:48. | :18:52.
position is as strong, if not stronger than ever. Here EU is | :18:53. | :18:57.
reacting to suggestions he considered stepping aside after the | :18:58. | :19:00.
recent defeat by Slovakia. If you honestly think that from that | :19:01. | :19:08.
moment, maybe 24 hours after the defeat, I was thinking about myself, | :19:09. | :19:13.
then you don't know me. I think at that point, how do I get this group | :19:14. | :19:18.
of people, the fans, the players, the backroom staff into a major | :19:19. | :19:22.
tournament? That is all I am thinking about. I am 59 years old, | :19:23. | :19:27.
do you think I was thinking about myself at that point? The Scots are | :19:28. | :19:33.
fourth in their qualifying group, three points behind England. Defeat | :19:34. | :19:39.
at Wembley wouldn't kill Scotland's prospects of qualifying, but it | :19:40. | :19:43.
would render them are pretty slim, with or without Scott Brown in the | :19:44. | :19:46.
Hopes of remaining in the Champions League have been | :19:47. | :19:50.
kept alive at Celtic, after last night's draw | :19:51. | :19:53.
They face Barcelona again at Parkhead later this month | :19:54. | :19:57.
and players believe that the Catalan team can be beaten. | :19:58. | :20:00.
Back on home soil, if not returning in trying, at least they are | :20:01. | :20:10.
satisfied on a job well done in Germany. It was a result which could | :20:11. | :20:15.
have been even better, but when it came to the crunch, Callum McGregor | :20:16. | :20:18.
couldn't convert at 1-1 against ten came to the crunch, Callum McGregor | :20:19. | :20:24.
man Borussia Monchengladbach, chances don't come much better. You | :20:25. | :20:30.
have got to do it to them. It is a learning curve and we will learn | :20:31. | :20:37.
again and go again in the next game. Spare margins after separate the | :20:38. | :20:41.
good and great in football. But the quality of Celtic's performance has | :20:42. | :20:46.
boosted belief. We keep fighting until the end. We have Barcelona at | :20:47. | :20:51.
home. Celtic Park will be electric and the team will be looking forward | :20:52. | :20:58.
to that game. Is it a winnable game? We always go into every game | :20:59. | :21:02.
thinking it is a winnable game and we give it 100%. The best efforts | :21:03. | :21:05.
will be required if they want to we give it 100%. The best efforts | :21:06. | :21:10.
finish third in group C and drop down to the Europa League after | :21:11. | :21:16.
Christmas. A win at home to Barcelona or a win away to | :21:17. | :21:19.
Manchester City in December. If we perform like that, we have a chance | :21:20. | :21:25.
in the game. We will concentrate on taking our performance up to that | :21:26. | :21:30.
level. If we can do that, we still have a chance. After losing 23 of | :21:31. | :21:36.
their previous 25 Champions League away trips, going behind must have | :21:37. | :21:42.
had that familiar feeling for Celtic. Borussia Monchengladbach had | :21:43. | :21:46.
a half-time lead. The margins I mentioned earlier also apply to the | :21:47. | :21:52.
home team. Having lost to the Germans a fortnight ago, Celtic made | :21:53. | :21:58.
amends when Lucent Dan Bailey scored a penalty. Had his team-mate been as | :21:59. | :22:07.
cool in the closing moments, Celtic's European prospects would be | :22:08. | :22:08.
even brighter. Scots actor Ewan McGregor's | :22:09. | :22:12.
in Edinburgh this evening for the Gala screening of his film | :22:13. | :22:13.
'American Pastoral'. He's not just lead actor | :22:14. | :22:16.
in the movie, it's his The Perth-born star has also been | :22:17. | :22:24.
voicing views on Scottish politics Morag Kinniburgh has | :22:25. | :22:28.
managed to catch a word American Patoral tells the story of | :22:29. | :22:38.
a 1960s white family whose lives are torn apart by political violence. | :22:39. | :22:43.
Ewan McGregor, a tough subject, especially for your first feature as | :22:44. | :22:48.
director, but does it have relevance for today? You cannot help but see | :22:49. | :22:52.
relevancy is in the film. I didn't make it as a vehicle to make social | :22:53. | :22:57.
comment about society, but I think there are things that will spark you | :22:58. | :23:01.
to think about things that are happening in a very divided America | :23:02. | :23:06.
at the time. The film and the book was set post-war America when most | :23:07. | :23:11.
generations collide with their children's generations in the 60s. I | :23:12. | :23:16.
focused mainly on telling that story. Politics at home and Scotland | :23:17. | :23:23.
on your mind at the manner, where do you think we are with Scotland post | :23:24. | :23:29.
Brexit? I don't really know. I guess we won't know until we know what | :23:30. | :23:34.
Brexit means. It is up in the air. I was in Scotland when we were | :23:35. | :23:41.
shooting Train Spotting on the night of the Brexit vote. I couldn't | :23:42. | :23:45.
believe the outcome of the vote. So I don't know. I was very angered by | :23:46. | :23:50.
it and when I saw the map, having been someone who voted to stay in | :23:51. | :24:02.
the union, I felt we were going in two different directions. I am sure | :24:03. | :24:05.
it is difficult to know what the best thing is to do in Scotland | :24:06. | :24:11.
until we know what Brexit means. How was it filming the Trainspotting | :24:12. | :24:19.
sequel? It was great. It was lovely to be on set with Robert Carlyle and | :24:20. | :24:26.
the others. It was great to be back in Scotland. Even the first train | :24:27. | :24:34.
spotting film we shot in Glasgow. Any train scenes were shot in | :24:35. | :24:39.
Princess Street. This one we shot in Edinburgh and it plays a part in | :24:40. | :24:43.
this new film. The trailer is out tomorrow and the film comes out in | :24:44. | :24:47.
January and I think people will like it. Better let you get your popcorn | :24:48. | :24:53.
hour. American Patoral is on general release next week. | :24:54. | :24:54.
Now here's Shelley Joffrey with details of Scotland 2016. | :24:55. | :24:59.
Tonight, should the full-time whistle be blown on the offensive at | :25:00. | :25:06.
football behaviour. Is it too late to bridge the gap between what | :25:07. | :25:12.
people should be putting away for their retirement and what they are | :25:13. | :25:13.
actually saving? Generally dry and bright conditions | :25:14. | :25:26.
for many, but a change on the way as we had overnight with cloudy, wet | :25:27. | :25:31.
weather moving in. You can see on the chart behind me, we have this | :25:32. | :25:34.
weather front edging in and the high pressure will slip away tomorrow. | :25:35. | :25:41.
Starting tonight as the cloud builds across the Highlands and Islands. | :25:42. | :25:44.
The further east you are, we have a chilly evening before the cloud | :25:45. | :25:49.
builds. But the cloud and the rain for the most part and the | :25:50. | :25:53.
temperatures recover. For many, settling at around eight Celsius | :25:54. | :25:57.
overnight. It does mean it will be a cloudy and wet day for many. The | :25:58. | :26:02.
rain heaviest and persistent across western part of the country. The | :26:03. | :26:07.
further east you are, the rain is lighter and more patchy in nature. | :26:08. | :26:12.
By mid-afternoon we are looking at temperatures of eight to 10 Celsius, | :26:13. | :26:16.
but with the cloud and the rain it will feel cool. Later, the wind will | :26:17. | :26:21.
vary towards the north-west and brighter conditions coming across | :26:22. | :26:25.
parts of the Western Isles to end the day. Shetland faring well. So | :26:26. | :26:31.
largely dry and bright for you for most of the day. The wet weather | :26:32. | :26:38.
continues to sweep eastwards, breezy from the north-west. Showery too. | :26:39. | :26:42.
Into Friday, low pressure is still in charge. There will be outbreaks | :26:43. | :26:47.
of rain but that will slip away by the weekend, introducing a cold, | :26:48. | :26:51.
northerly airstream. Quite bitter for some. But whether in the south | :26:52. | :26:58.
at first. Another band of rain in the north edging southwards. Snow on | :26:59. | :27:03.
the hills. At the weekend, both Saturday and Sunday, most of the | :27:04. | :27:07.
mainland will be crisp, sunny but cold and then showers around the | :27:08. | :27:10.
coast and across the islands. Sunday will be similar. Bear in mind, at | :27:11. | :27:16.
night some shop, widespread frost despite the sunny skies in the day. | :27:17. | :27:18.
That is the forecast. Now, a reminder of | :27:19. | :27:21.
tonight's main news. An MoD firing range is locked down | :27:22. | :27:33.
after a soldier was killed during a live firing exercise. I am back at | :27:34. | :27:37.
8pm and the late bulletin just after the Ten O'Clock News. Until then, | :27:38. | :27:40.
enjoy your evening. | :27:41. | :27:45. |
