Now on BBC News, it's time for Talking Business. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Entertainment is big business. Is Hollywood looking East to try to | :00:08. | :00:12.
capture hearts and purses? What about new forms of entertainment, | :00:13. | :00:18.
like a viral video on the Internet. That gets you use, but do they make | :00:19. | :00:24.
any money? Here in Singapore, I am Linda Yueh and we are talking | :00:25. | :00:26.
business. Welcome to our entertainment | :00:27. | :00:56.
special. 2013 saw a Hollywood first, and movie filmed in China in Chinese | :00:57. | :01:04.
as well as English. Man of Tai Chi was the directorial debut of Chianti | :01:05. | :01:12.
reads. The movie tells the story of a martial artist who finds | :01:13. | :01:14.
themselves embroiled in the dangerous but the group took four | :01:15. | :01:18.
underground fighting. It is the latest in a string of films that | :01:19. | :01:22.
takes inspiration from the East. Joining us now is the producer of | :01:23. | :01:30.
the film. It is a delight to have you join us. I want to ask about | :01:31. | :01:35.
this kind of reduction. Was it difficult to get funding, is that | :01:36. | :01:40.
why you went to China? It was difficult to get funding. That is | :01:41. | :01:46.
not why we went to China. The driving force behind it was the | :01:47. | :01:52.
director wanted to make a Chinese film. A lot of your work does look | :01:53. | :01:59.
East. Is there a particular reason? This story was born out of a | :02:00. | :02:02.
friendship with his stump man who worked with him on the matrix, he is | :02:03. | :02:08.
the coup leader in the movie. He really wanted to come to China and | :02:09. | :02:12.
make a movie with him. That aside again. | :02:13. | :02:19.
Are there things that can be learnt from the Chinese industry? When we | :02:20. | :02:30.
go to China to make movies we are guests in that country. At the same | :02:31. | :02:34.
time they want to learn from us how we do it because their industry is | :02:35. | :02:43.
evolving and they are discovering audience taste and hide the box | :02:44. | :02:53.
office works. It is not just about the Chinese money, it is more about | :02:54. | :03:01.
a new market that" a lot of possibilities for storytelling, for | :03:02. | :03:05.
business, all kinds of things. The only advice I would give to anybody | :03:06. | :03:10.
when there is to remember you are a guest in the country and want to | :03:11. | :03:18.
make sure that you act accordingly. What is it like to work with Keanu? | :03:19. | :03:33.
It is great. He is an extraordinary talent. Although it was his debut as | :03:34. | :03:39.
a director, it wasn't like as first time because he had so much | :03:40. | :03:41.
experience working with great direct is. He is a reliable sort of guy | :03:42. | :03:48.
that understands production, understands what my job is and his | :03:49. | :03:56.
leadership is one that is very inspiring, they united the entire | :03:57. | :04:01.
crew and the business people and everybody to rally around him. I | :04:02. | :04:05.
would say I highly recommend it if you ever get the chance to work with | :04:06. | :04:11.
him! Thank you very much for speaking to us. | :04:12. | :04:18.
The way this film was funded and film raises a host of questions | :04:19. | :04:22.
about where movie production is headed. Joining me now in the studio | :04:23. | :04:29.
on Hollywood's crossover with Asia is Mark, the Flying Dutchman. He has | :04:30. | :04:34.
been an entertainer in Asia for 30 years. We have a radio DJ and act | :04:35. | :04:40.
dress. She starred in one of the most popular sitcoms in Singapore | :04:41. | :04:44.
and has served under place firmly on the Asian entertainment scene. And | :04:45. | :04:56.
Robin, trends after across -- across Asia. Welcome to the programme. | :04:57. | :05:05.
Mark, is this collaboration between Hollywood and Asia the genuine | :05:06. | :05:10.
article really about collaboration, or just searching for audience? I | :05:11. | :05:16.
think Hollywood has realised that there are a lot of dollars in Asia. | :05:17. | :05:23.
You have done a movie, using a Chinese crew, filming in China | :05:24. | :05:31.
because you know you will earn big money in China. I man had for extra | :05:32. | :05:40.
minutes in China, the same thing with avengers and Batman. It is all | :05:41. | :05:47.
about the Chinese dollar. That sounds a bit cynical. I love sitting | :05:48. | :05:56.
on the fence. It is about the dollar at the end of the day, and you have | :05:57. | :06:00.
to start somewhere stop they want to grow their audience, then you have | :06:01. | :06:09.
to get in there with a collaboration with them. We are here to give you | :06:10. | :06:21.
more entertainment, and thank you very much for your dollar. When | :06:22. | :06:31.
Carrie Grant on we have earned -- and Audrey Hepburn were in Europe, | :06:32. | :06:38.
nobody thought that was strange trying to drum up business. I don't | :06:39. | :06:47.
think you can blame the animal for wanting to get more dollars. I think | :06:48. | :06:53.
you can see Asian artists moving to Hollywood, then moving back to Asia. | :06:54. | :06:59.
It is much more of a revolving door. There is the dollar imperative, but | :07:00. | :07:03.
as a consequence, you can see people mix of a lot more. The conjuring, | :07:04. | :07:08.
that was directed by a guy who grew up in Malaysia. It is a story | :07:09. | :07:27.
inspired by Asian ghost stories. When you mix these different | :07:28. | :07:33.
cultures, it opens up a new door for a new storylines, a new look. We are | :07:34. | :07:45.
exotic! UDC and number of Chinese actors and actresses gone over to | :07:46. | :07:49.
Hollywood and working. Why is it always just China? You don't see | :07:50. | :08:02.
enough of India in Hollywood. Are you talking about Bollywood actors? | :08:03. | :08:09.
You don't see enough of them in Hollywood. Just doing it pieces. | :08:10. | :08:25.
Arnold Schwarzenegger'snew movie is directed by a Korean. Nicole | :08:26. | :08:33.
Kidman'snew movie directed by act Korean. If you go back to 1976 or | :08:34. | :09:05.
79, there were some Bollywood act as working in Hollywood. If you talk | :09:06. | :09:15.
about this global movie scene, is Hollywood the be all? I have been | :09:16. | :09:26.
asking this question for 30 years. Has Hollywood learned to use their | :09:27. | :09:31.
dollars to globally generate hype? Is that really what it is. His | :09:32. | :09:35.
Chinese cinema that far behind Hollywood's, is Bollywood Heinz | :09:36. | :09:41.
Hollywood? Or does Hollywood have so much money to generate the hype? | :09:42. | :09:51.
Would you consider Hollywood's? It is so universally known and easily | :09:52. | :09:53.
accessible that people think of it as the leader in cinema. With the | :09:54. | :10:00.
Chinese market and its filming industry, it could overtake America | :10:01. | :10:09.
in the dollar cents. I think we are moving into this concept of the | :10:10. | :10:15.
living end this multipolar world and will not just be one big superpower. | :10:16. | :10:22.
It was so exciting when John Woo went to Hollywood's -- Hollywood's, | :10:23. | :10:35.
and the tender to be appointing. -- and it ended up being a little bit | :10:36. | :10:44.
disappointing. Hollywood actors can fly from tree to tree the way the | :10:45. | :10:50.
Asian ones can! Thank you very much to my panel. It is not just China | :10:51. | :10:56.
and Korea that are gaining popularity with global audiences, | :10:57. | :10:59.
Hollywood has long been watched outside India. Mr or is filming his | :11:00. | :11:12.
latest action film in London. The fact is it is already dominating | :11:13. | :11:29.
the entertainment landscape. Formally, the Western media has not | :11:30. | :11:34.
caught up with it. If you look at the sheer numbers of videos out | :11:35. | :11:38.
there, films that are out there, the sheer numbers of music, the numbers | :11:39. | :11:46.
far exceed the US and Europe together. Now, it is not quantified | :11:47. | :11:51.
because nobody has bothered to quantify it like Western | :11:52. | :11:55.
entertainment product is. And I'm probably in certain sectors, it is | :11:56. | :12:00.
not as highly prized. Shakka, how are these big | :12:01. | :12:04.
international film projects being funded these days? | :12:05. | :12:09.
If you look at career, its rise in film and television has been very | :12:10. | :12:13.
much driven by the Korean government. They started funding | :12:14. | :12:18.
Korean television, and now you go to China, it is dominated by Korean | :12:19. | :12:23.
television. In Singapore, Korean television is really popular. In | :12:24. | :12:28.
eastern parts of India, Korean TV is more popular than Indian TV. It is | :12:29. | :12:32.
partly the way the government does it. In China, the government is | :12:33. | :12:37.
doing it. The infrastructure the government is providing to local | :12:38. | :12:42.
film-makers, they are adding nine screens every day. Most of them | :12:43. | :12:48.
digital, many 3D. They are increasing the infrastructure to | :12:49. | :12:52.
which people can go. In India, film is an obsession. Out that | :12:53. | :12:56.
obsession, when someone makes a lots of money, you know what they say | :12:57. | :13:01.
is, the best time for Indian cinema is when there has been a good | :13:02. | :13:05.
monsoon. When there is a good monsoon, the farmers have a lot of | :13:06. | :13:09.
tax-free money. They all come to Bombay and say, we are going to make | :13:10. | :13:17.
movie. There is a cultural obsession with movies that does not exist in | :13:18. | :13:20.
the West, that exists in India. One Company in India says, we have | :13:21. | :13:25.
dominated, we have done the best we can in the Indian market, let's go | :13:26. | :13:28.
international. If Hollywood funding is changing | :13:29. | :13:32.
because of the global nature of the industry? If you make a Hollywood | :13:33. | :13:36.
film, how is that funded? Or Hollywood has become very | :13:37. | :13:40.
corporate. There is a huge movement saying independent film funding, but | :13:41. | :13:46.
for a while that was from hedge funds which collapsed. They are | :13:47. | :13:51.
coming back little bit. Then, there were countries that came in. The | :13:52. | :13:57.
Korean government got their fingers burned, the Japanese. A lot of | :13:58. | :14:03.
Indian funding. Companies like Reliance, Stephen Spielberg, funded | :14:04. | :14:14.
with a $600 million deal. Finding Hollywood for the same reasons as an | :14:15. | :14:18.
addiction to cinema. If you come to Hollywood now, the big visual | :14:19. | :14:25.
effects houses, most of the big visual effects houses are being | :14:26. | :14:30.
bought by Indian entrepreneurs, Chinese entrepreneurs. Somehow what | :14:31. | :14:36.
will happen is, the reason they are buying it is because they are | :14:37. | :14:44.
transferring back into China and India where they can do it cheaper, | :14:45. | :14:49.
to keep these going. For example, the company that did Life of Pi. | :14:50. | :14:59.
That was bought by an Indian animation company. Transferring it | :15:00. | :15:02.
back to India to keep it going. In doing this, they are transferring | :15:03. | :15:07.
technology to India. As I said, that is what the US will see, technology | :15:08. | :15:14.
moving to Asia, Hollywood will struggle to survive as a major | :15:15. | :15:20.
film-making hub. Hollywood may be facing competition | :15:21. | :15:23.
from around the world, but the biggest game changer has been the | :15:24. | :15:27.
Internet. People are getting their Entenmann, Chamakh -- entertainment | :15:28. | :15:36.
on the go. The video which captured at this year is what captured much | :15:37. | :15:57.
about is what sound the Fox makes. The video has been seen by a quarter | :15:58. | :16:02.
of a billion people over the world. It has made them so busy, the only | :16:03. | :16:06.
time we caught them was when they were in New York on a press tour and | :16:07. | :16:11.
I was on assignment in Japan. Through the wonders of technology, I | :16:12. | :16:14.
asked why they thought their video went viral? | :16:15. | :16:23.
Put me down, put my feet back on the ground. | :16:24. | :16:30.
The secret is you can't plan for this to happen, this happened by | :16:31. | :16:34.
accident, as it does most of them. The story is, we have a talk show, | :16:35. | :16:40.
my brother as well, two of us. There was only one chair today, so I am | :16:41. | :16:46.
doing it alone. We have a comedy talk show. We make comedy and music | :16:47. | :16:55.
videos. This was meant to be three minutes of Norwegian comedy. We | :16:56. | :16:59.
released it on YouTube as we do with every song we make. Somehow, it | :17:00. | :17:05.
started travelling. The numbers kept on. Kept on piling up. | :17:06. | :17:12.
How much have you made from YouTube? It is impossible to find out. I have | :17:13. | :17:18.
been asking so many times. The music industry is the strangest industry | :17:19. | :17:23.
in the world. No one knows how much or if you will earn anything at | :17:24. | :17:30.
all. For now, I have had no pay-outs. We will see. I don't know. | :17:31. | :17:36.
We are just doing it for fun. We will keep doing it no matter what. | :17:37. | :17:41.
Hopefully they will cover the airline tickets or something! | :17:42. | :17:47.
Surely you will get something? Something in due course? | :17:48. | :17:50.
I would assume we would. I heard some figures, after 1.5 billion | :17:51. | :17:59.
hits, the first million dollars. Then you have to divide that among | :18:00. | :18:04.
the hundreds of people involved. You don't make a lot of money on | :18:05. | :18:08.
YouTube, I don't think so. You have collaborated now with Crayon -- | :18:09. | :18:19.
Korea. How important is the Asian market, | :18:20. | :18:25.
and US market which has traditionally been the largest? | :18:26. | :18:32.
Everyone has been talking about the rise of Korean pop. It is a big | :18:33. | :18:37.
thing. I do not think you can say the same for European use it as far | :18:38. | :18:42.
as importing to the US. If you have a good song, it will travel. It is | :18:43. | :18:46.
not important to us where we have future fans. As many as possible, of | :18:47. | :18:54.
course. When we went to Hong Kong, we did some interviews with the | :18:55. | :18:58.
Korean press and they told us we had been number one to six weeks. We | :18:59. | :19:04.
didn't even know. We were super excited. For us, it adds to the | :19:05. | :19:09.
comedy, and it adds to the greatness of life. It is both something we | :19:10. | :19:15.
really enjoyed to be, of course, who doesn't want to be number one? It | :19:16. | :19:20.
emphasises the comedy in the whole concept. | :19:21. | :19:32.
For more insight into what the new norm in the entertainment industry | :19:33. | :19:37.
is, still with me are my panel, Robin Marrone and Burnett Lopez. | :19:38. | :19:43.
Penetta, Howell have music tastes changed because of the advent of | :19:44. | :19:50.
online and YouTube? Everything is digital, online, | :19:51. | :19:53.
especially for the younger crowd. Let's not take it away from all age | :19:54. | :19:58.
groups. You want to download stuff, see it on the go, it immediately. | :19:59. | :20:04.
From so many sources, some illegally. Which we won't talk | :20:05. | :20:11.
about. No, no. It is a voracious appetite. With people trying to get | :20:12. | :20:17.
into the business, they tend to use viral videos to get in there. | :20:18. | :20:23.
Mark, the big question, how do you make a viral video? You get up and | :20:24. | :20:28.
you be yourself. That is what it is. This will go viral clearly. If I got | :20:29. | :20:35.
up and sang right now, I would have a whole new career! If you look at | :20:36. | :20:41.
the Fox video. If they had taken that to a record label and said, I | :20:42. | :20:45.
want to sell this record, no one would have taken them seriously. | :20:46. | :20:49.
There they go on YouTube, they put it at that and the world loved it. I | :20:50. | :20:54.
don't understand it but it makes me happy listening to it! I didn't know | :20:55. | :21:02.
those were the sound Fox is made. On that night -- note, how do you make | :21:03. | :21:10.
money from a viral video? I can speak about Psi. Gangnam | :21:11. | :21:24.
Style. We all saw the video. Then we saw parody videos, translated into | :21:25. | :21:29.
different mortgages, different context, Singapore style. There is a | :21:30. | :21:35.
concept setting on YouTube where you say, you can have my music and do | :21:36. | :21:40.
what you want, but I want a cut of your video. That is what his team | :21:41. | :21:46.
did. It meant it expanded. People were translating his video for him. | :21:47. | :21:52.
I do not speak Korean but I knew it was fantastic. | :21:53. | :21:54.
Final question to my panel. The most revealing question I ask you. What's | :21:55. | :22:00.
the last video you watched on YouTube? | :22:01. | :22:04.
My parents are watching, it is censored! It was the one we watched | :22:05. | :22:14.
while we were on radio. Theh People Versus Winter. People skating on ice | :22:15. | :22:20.
and injuring themselves really badly. | :22:21. | :22:25.
They put it on video. One guy actually forgets it is winter and | :22:26. | :22:28.
tries to dive into a swimming pool, and it is frozen ice. But if it was | :22:29. | :22:36.
using video, it would be the last one, Ilvis. | :22:37. | :22:44.
Because I had to do a round-up of the most searched towns, it was an | :22:45. | :22:50.
Indonesian street performer kid, with a ukelele, singing, sweet, | :22:51. | :22:59.
singing in Indonesian in a way I don't know. He has apparently become | :23:00. | :23:05.
quite big, he has toured with a band. He is this high, really sweet. | :23:06. | :23:11.
A crazy moment, how long would it have taken that kid to have reached | :23:12. | :23:18.
that level ten years ago? Love it, love it. I won't tell you | :23:19. | :23:22.
the last thing I watched on YouTube. I would like to thank my panellists. | :23:23. | :23:29.
I am not leaving until you tell us. We have heard from the producer of | :23:30. | :23:37.
man of Tai Chi. From the Oscar-winning director of Elizabeth. | :23:38. | :23:42.
What this disparate group reveals is the change in taste of how we see | :23:43. | :23:47.
entertainment today. That's all we have time for today. Check us out. | :23:48. | :23:55.
See you next week for more Talking Business. | :23:56. | :24:08.
Good evening. As is often the case this time of year, Sunshine by day, | :24:09. | :24:16.
by night, the Frost arrives, widely forming. For some, it is already | :24:17. | :24:23.
there. Across western areas, this cloud will take away | :24:24. | :24:24. |
