aid delivery could start later today. Those are the latest | :00:00. | :00:00.
headlines from BBC World News. Now for the latest financial news and | :00:00. | :00:00.
World Business Report. Poland looks to pip Russias apple | :00:00. | :00:20.
ban but the core issue is where to send all that fruit? As an European | :00:21. | :00:25.
ban on Indian mangoes continues, farmers in Pakistan see a gap in the | :00:26. | :00:27.
Welcome to World Business Report. In market. | :00:28. | :00:38.
Welcome to World Business Report. In a minute we'll have more on that | :00:39. | :00:41.
important US central bankers meeting in Wyoming. But first, it's an | :00:42. | :00:44.
industry that doesn't get much attention but it's a difficult time | :00:45. | :00:47.
right now, for Poland's apple growers. The country is the world's | :00:48. | :00:52.
largest producer of the fruit, even beating China. And until Russia's | :00:53. | :00:56.
recent ban on EU imports, it was the biggest supplier to the Russian | :00:57. | :01:00.
market. And while Moscow's embargo on EU food may be hitting growers | :01:01. | :01:03.
everywhere on the continent, it's especially painful for Poland's | :01:04. | :01:05.
mainly family farms because last year their apples accounted for 90% | :01:06. | :01:08.
of the country's 339 euros million worth of annual sales to Russia ` | :01:09. | :01:20.
that's about $450 million. And with the autumn harvest about to begin, | :01:21. | :01:23.
it has becoming a race against time to decide what can be done with the | :01:24. | :01:27.
crop. From the orchards south of the capital Warsaw, our Europe business | :01:28. | :01:30.
correspondent Nigel Cassidy sends this report. It promises to be one | :01:31. | :01:41.
of Poland's has ever apple harvest but half of all exports from family | :01:42. | :01:45.
farms like this is to go across the board into Russia by the truckload. | :01:46. | :01:51.
It is a low profit margin with high turnover trade so finding buyers all | :01:52. | :01:57.
over Europe will test the farmers cooperative that sell the crop. This | :01:58. | :02:03.
variety is a good seller to Russia. It is an agonising time for growers. | :02:04. | :02:08.
Harvest is in less than a months time and this group of farmers | :02:09. | :02:13.
usually sent 20 trucks a day to Russia, 20,000 apples in each truck. | :02:14. | :02:20.
They need to either sell in the market or get Europe compensation | :02:21. | :02:25.
fund either way that will not get very good money for their apples. | :02:26. | :02:29.
Nothing lasts forever. We have to improve to meet the requirements of | :02:30. | :02:33.
the most demanding market then we can say, I do want to say we say | :02:34. | :02:39.
goodbye to Russia but we would be much more independent. This is what | :02:40. | :02:45.
Apple is not so go for it Poland switches to more demanding markets. | :02:46. | :02:53.
Washing, grading, branding and packaging to meet specifications. | :02:54. | :02:58.
This largest corporation is fully equipped but it would be happy at if | :02:59. | :03:03.
embargoed hit growers were not obliged to take their apples of the | :03:04. | :03:07.
market in exchange for emergency aid. We are very happy that the | :03:08. | :03:13.
farmers get money from the European Union but it would be better instead | :03:14. | :03:19.
of wasting fruit, we sell cheaply to other markets outside the EU so they | :03:20. | :03:27.
will be able to taste our apples and maybe, in the future, they will come | :03:28. | :03:33.
back and buy it again. For Poland, the longer term answer to dealing | :03:34. | :03:37.
with the Russian bands seems to be selling better package, better | :03:38. | :03:42.
quality apples they can sell to more customers around the world. From | :03:43. | :03:49.
apples to mangos. Earlier this year the European Union banned imports of | :03:50. | :03:52.
mangos from India ` after the discovery of insects which | :03:53. | :03:57.
authorities said threatened crops. That created a gap in the market | :03:58. | :04:00.
which growers around the region have been quick to fill but not without | :04:01. | :04:03.
some challenges. Nosheen Abbas reports from the Pakistani capital | :04:04. | :04:14.
Islamabad. After Europe's India mango ban kicked in, it was | :04:15. | :04:17.
businesses like this that started to suffer. They had agreed to buy the | :04:18. | :04:23.
fruit from farmers and suddenly had to find new customers for the | :04:24. | :04:26.
mangoes could no longer sent to the EU. Some went elsewhere abroad but | :04:27. | :04:29.
most were sold in India. Meaning prices fell. For India's mango | :04:30. | :04:33.
farmers, it is worrying, especially if the ban continues. But of course, | :04:34. | :04:38.
India is not the only country in this region to grow mangoes. This | :04:39. | :04:41.
farm is on the outskirts of Pakistan. Every summer, the fruit | :04:42. | :04:48.
grown here is goes to local markets that some kits sold abroad. `` gets | :04:49. | :04:59.
sold abroad. Pakistan is the eighth biggest exporter of mangoes in the | :05:00. | :05:02.
world and it is always on the lookout for new customers. The | :05:03. | :05:05.
European Union ban on Indian mangoes is due to last until the end of 2015 | :05:06. | :05:09.
but that has not stopped some Pakistan in exporters looking to | :05:10. | :05:11.
take advantage of this opportunity, getting ashore on sales now. And | :05:12. | :05:14.
perhaps giving new customers something to think about. This man | :05:15. | :05:18.
buys mangoes from local farms and exports them. His biggest markets | :05:19. | :05:32.
are Asian markets but this year, he got his biggest order from the | :05:33. | :05:39.
European Union. TRANSLATION: A company in Ireland placed an order. | :05:40. | :05:44.
In one week they wanted 1500 kilograms because of the ban on | :05:45. | :05:47.
Indian mangoes. It is something we in Pakistan can definitely take | :05:48. | :05:50.
advantage of. Pakistan was ready to sell mangoes to the EU and the | :05:51. | :05:53.
Indian badminton total exports are set to increase in 2014. But pests | :05:54. | :05:57.
like fruit flies which led to the Indian ruling have caused problems | :05:58. | :06:00.
here as well. There is a ban on sales to the US and Japan as a | :06:01. | :06:08.
result. There is a bit national pride over mangoes across the | :06:09. | :06:12.
region. Whether you are from India, Pakistan or other growers like | :06:13. | :06:15.
Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, people will tell you that their mangoes | :06:16. | :06:26.
taste best. Later, the head of America's central bank, Janet Yellen | :06:27. | :06:32.
is due to give a speech. Investors will be watching closely for clues | :06:33. | :06:37.
on the likely timing of an interest rate rise. The latest Fed minutes, | :06:38. | :06:41.
released on Wednesday, showed a majority of Fed policymakers believe | :06:42. | :06:44.
the US economy is improving enough for the cost of borrowing to rise | :06:45. | :06:47.
sooner than previously thought. But when? If she waits too long, the | :06:48. | :06:57.
economy may overheat. If she moves too soon, the recovery could lose | :06:58. | :07:00.
steam. With me Athan`asios Vam`vakidis, European head of | :07:01. | :07:03.
currency strategy at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. What are you | :07:04. | :07:12.
expecting? We are expecting her to be cautious. You should be | :07:13. | :07:16.
consistent with previous messages and she has to strike a delicate | :07:17. | :07:22.
balancing act. The focus will be on the labour markets in the US. They | :07:23. | :07:27.
have been improving and unemployment has been declining but there are | :07:28. | :07:31.
also some weak this is. Labourforce participation has been falling. | :07:32. | :07:37.
Underemployment is quite high. Part`time employment is quite high. | :07:38. | :07:43.
Her message would be although the recovery is gaining steam we are not | :07:44. | :07:51.
there just yet. If you raise rate soon, if you do not raise them soon | :07:52. | :07:57.
enough it can spiral out of control. That balancing act now linked to the | :07:58. | :08:01.
labour market, making sure the job picture is improving but it is not | :08:02. | :08:06.
quite there yet? Absolutely. Definitely, we believe the | :08:07. | :08:09.
normalisation of the monitoring policy is a key market in. It is a | :08:10. | :08:16.
key market theme. Even at next year. They have to make sure they prepare | :08:17. | :08:20.
the market so they do not do it too fast which would threaten the | :08:21. | :08:23.
recovery. What would allow them to do that is they are not concerned | :08:24. | :08:30.
about inflation. Although the labour market has been improving faster | :08:31. | :08:32.
than expected, inflation is under control pulls top however, if they | :08:33. | :08:39.
moved too slowly, price pressure may appear. They have to be cautious and | :08:40. | :08:43.
take into account all different indicators in order not to threaten | :08:44. | :08:52.
the recovery but to have the monetary authorities. It is a | :08:53. | :08:59.
different picture in the euro. We will also hear from Mario Draghi | :09:00. | :09:07.
later? We expected the Bank of England to be one of the first to | :09:08. | :09:12.
move towards hiking rates next year. In both cases the labour market have | :09:13. | :09:17.
been improving. We have some concerns about prices. We believe | :09:18. | :09:23.
the Bank of England would move most likely in February but not to | :09:24. | :09:29.
earlier than the Feds. We will also have monetary policies because it is | :09:30. | :09:36.
moving in a positive direction. Plenty for us to listen out too. | :09:37. | :09:43.
Thank you very much. If we have time to show you the market numbers: the | :09:44. | :09:52.
European markets. European stocks were higher yesterday through a | :09:53. | :10:00.
result of the better than expected figures. Much more from us later. | :10:01. | :10:14.
