British Airways resumes flights to Iran for the first time

But can it really become a global tourist hotspot?

obstacles in the way. Travellers are expected to conform

:03:12.:03:27.

A lot to take in here, we've heard British Airways will take off this

:03:28.:03:31.

evening from Heathrow to Tehran, the first time in ten years. In terms of

:03:32.:03:35.

the tourism industry, last year they saw 5 million tourists visiting.

:03:36.:03:40.

From your point of view, what needs to be done to encourage the sector

:03:41.:03:44.

for Iran? The first thing is some people need to go and tell everyone

:03:45.:03:47.

else what a fantastic place it is and how nice it is to visit, how

:03:48.:03:52.

friendly it is and how good the food is. It is something you do often,

:03:53.:03:56.

women don't actually have to wear the hitup, foreign visitors? In

:03:57.:04:07.

terror an you but very few hijabs. People go and say it is a great

:04:08.:04:12.

thing but in terms of the ease of travel, the Swift system isn't in

:04:13.:04:15.

place, the international payment system, that can cause problems for

:04:16.:04:20.

some? There is a jewel exchange rate and you have to pay in cash. It

:04:21.:04:27.

should be sorted out by the end of March next year which will make

:04:28.:04:30.

things easier for travellers. They have to invest heavily if they want

:04:31.:04:35.

to attract 20 million a year by 2025 in their hotels, the tour operating

:04:36.:04:40.

systems, many areas. Hotels is probably the biggest issue and there

:04:41.:04:44.

are a number of hotel projects now ongoing. In the past, the lack of

:04:45.:04:49.

top-quality hotels has been a real issue in Tehran in particular. Who

:04:50.:04:55.

is coming? When they say they have 5 million foreign visitors coming into

:04:56.:04:58.

Iran last year, who is most attracted to go to Iran? I think

:04:59.:05:04.

anyone apart from Americans, and anyone who is impacted by the

:05:05.:05:08.

American visa waiver system. Currently they are following a new

:05:09.:05:12.

rule this year, if you have been to Iran in the last ten years you can't

:05:13.:05:16.

use the USB is a way the system and that is putting some people off --

:05:17.:05:22.

US Leezer waiver. Outside of that I think it will be a destination for

:05:23.:05:28.

lots of Asians and Europeans. What is a big thing for travellers is

:05:29.:05:33.

security and safety with so many attractive destinations off limits

:05:34.:05:36.

because of terrorism et cetera. It is actually considered quite safe? I

:05:37.:05:41.

have never had any problems while I have been in terror on and felt

:05:42.:05:49.

unsafe. I am a frontier markets investor, and it is one of the safer

:05:50.:05:55.

places I feel I visit -- into an. Very interesting. More on our

:05:56.:05:58.

website. -- in Tehran. From Iran now to Nigeria

:05:59.:06:01.

where the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg has been

:06:02.:06:04.

making his first trip The billionaire defended Facebook's

:06:05.:06:06.

decision to continue rolling out free internet access

:06:07.:06:09.

across the continent following an Indian ban

:06:10.:06:11.

on the controversial app. Critics say the scheme threatens web

:06:12.:06:12.

neutrality by locking people Martin Patience is in Lagos for us

:06:13.:06:15.

and began by asking Mr Zuckerberg I wanted to come to Lagos because

:06:16.:06:33.

there is so much entrepreneurial energy here, there is such a vibrant

:06:34.:06:38.

developer and entrepreneurial community. There are 1 billion

:06:39.:06:42.

people in Africa, wanted to listen and learn and figure out what we can

:06:43.:06:46.

do to empower people to build the types of services that are not only

:06:47.:06:50.

going to improve the lives of people here but all around the world. How

:06:51.:06:55.

are you going to improve Internet access in Africa? There was lots of

:06:56.:06:58.

controversy when you did it in India? We have a 3-step plan for

:06:59.:07:05.

doing that, the first step is making sure there's network access

:07:06.:07:08.

everywhere. In some places there is a good cell work for Mike

:07:09.:07:13.

the second step of the plan is to decrease the costs of data and the

:07:14.:07:20.

third step is to increase awareness for the Internet. A lot of people

:07:21.:07:24.

can afford it and live in areas but they have never used the Internet

:07:25.:07:28.

before. If you go up to and asked them if they want to buy a data plan

:07:29.:07:32.

they aren't sure whether they want to do that -- and asked. But it

:07:33.:07:38.

backfired in India? Almost half of countries across the continent. --

:07:39.:07:47.

and ask. What are you going to take away from this trip? The energy is

:07:48.:07:51.

amazing, the entrepreneurial energy. When you meet people, as soon as we

:07:52.:07:55.

got off the plane, I went to this engineering training programme, I

:07:56.:07:59.

met this woman who told me this story that she had applied to a

:08:00.:08:03.

programme and the first time she didn't get in, but she showed up

:08:04.:08:07.

anyway because she wouldn't take no for an answer. They decided to let

:08:08.:08:11.

her start on the training programme and so she did and she crushed it,

:08:12.:08:16.

and now she's a professional engineer working at a multinational

:08:17.:08:19.

company and doing great. So, what I've found when I travel around the

:08:20.:08:24.

world is if you have that attitude then you're going to do well, right?

:08:25.:08:29.

And that is just pervasive here. You see that throughout the whole

:08:30.:08:32.

community and its amazing. You see that and you sense that and you know

:08:33.:08:35.

that the people here are going to do big things and shaped not only

:08:36.:08:38.

Nigeria but the whole world. That's Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg

:08:39.:08:47.

speaking to Martin Patience. Canada has been trying to strengthen trade

:08:48.:08:52.

ties with China, its biggest partner after the US. Sharanjit Leyl has

:08:53.:08:55.

been speaking to the trade Minister. It's not been an easy path for the

:08:56.:09:00.

Canadians because of a certain spat over rape seed oil? That's right,

:09:01.:09:06.

rapeseed oil or canola, a major export to China and China was

:09:07.:09:12.

seeking restrictions on Canadian exports of canola to China. But they

:09:13.:09:15.

have managed to put off that particular hurdle now because they

:09:16.:09:21.

have essentially lifted the deadline which was meant to be today when

:09:22.:09:27.

those restrictions were meant to be in place. Essentially what they are

:09:28.:09:31.

looking to do is boost economic ties. China, as you said, second

:09:32.:09:36.

largest trading partner for Canada. We know this is an extensive ten day

:09:37.:09:41.

trip by the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to China. In fact it's his

:09:42.:09:45.

first official trip there. And while there, the other interesting thing

:09:46.:09:49.

they did is they announced they would apply to join the China backed

:09:50.:09:54.

Asian infrastructure investment bank, which essentially makes Canada

:09:55.:09:58.

the latest ally of the US to join the new international development

:09:59.:10:01.

bank. The multilateral institution is seen as a big rival to the US

:10:02.:10:06.

dominated World Bank as well as the Japanese dominated Asian development

:10:07.:10:09.

bank. It was initially opposed by the US but attracted many US allies,

:10:10.:10:14.

including Canada, and I spoke to the trade minister from Canada earlier

:10:15.:10:18.

and she said that they join the group because they wanted to be at

:10:19.:10:23.

the top table. We think this is an important place for Canada to have a

:10:24.:10:27.

seat at the table. Our government believes in infrastructure

:10:28.:10:29.

investment to create jobs and growth, that's what we're doing at

:10:30.:10:34.

home in Canada. We have tremendous expertise there and we are really

:10:35.:10:37.

good at financial innovation. We think we can be an important,

:10:38.:10:43.

effective and useful member. That was Christian Freeman speaking to me

:10:44.:10:46.

earlier and the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be there until

:10:47.:10:51.

next Tuesday, he is attending the G20 with his counterparts, President

:10:52.:10:55.

Xi as well as Obama. All of this while trying to diffused that traits

:10:56.:11:06.

that. -- diffused. I will be back to review the papers in a few minutes

:11:07.:11:09.

-- trade spat --
