All right. Let's find out the latest happenings in the financial world. | :00:00. | :00:07.
Sally is here with World Business Report. The boss of the UK's biggest | :00:08. | :00:25.
business lobby group, the CBI comic gives us her reaction to the snap | :00:26. | :00:29.
election called for by the British Prime Minister. -- the CBI, gives. | :00:30. | :00:38.
And we talk to Facebook about policing violent material on the | :00:39. | :00:41.
social media website following the suicide of murder suspect Steve | :00:42. | :00:43.
Stephens. Hello and a warm welcome to you. | :00:44. | :00:49.
Welcome to World Business Report. I'm Sally Bundock. | :00:50. | :00:52.
all the market numbers for you as the global slide | :00:53. | :00:56.
in shares continues in Asia and the pound sterling | :00:57. | :00:59.
We were sure those numbers at the end of the programme. But first, | :01:00. | :01:08.
here we go again. Nine months after becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May | :01:09. | :01:12.
is ready dice and betting on a strong victory in a snap election on | :01:13. | :01:16.
June the act. Today, MPs are expected to vote in favour of the | :01:17. | :01:19.
proposal, which Theresa May says will bring greater certainty as | :01:20. | :01:23.
Britain prepares to leave the European Union. Markets reacted | :01:24. | :01:24.
sweetly to the news. On Tuesday, the pound | :01:25. | :01:29.
was on a roller coaster ride - it jumped - then swung to loss | :01:30. | :01:32.
and back again rising by as much as 2.7% percent | :01:33. | :01:36.
against the US dollar - some analysts believe markets | :01:37. | :01:38.
are cheering the prospect of a larger Conservative majority | :01:39. | :01:40.
which would give less power to hardline Eurosceptics | :01:41. | :01:43.
within Theresa May's party. The FTSE 100, the leading stock | :01:44. | :01:47.
market in London fell 1.8%, But despite the ongoing | :01:48. | :01:50.
uncertainty, the International Monetary Fund predicts the UK | :01:51. | :01:53.
economy will grow by 2% This will make it the second | :01:54. | :02:02.
fastest-growing developed economy in the world, behind the United States. | :02:03. | :02:05.
Business groups have used yesterday's news to demand | :02:06. | :02:08.
politicians make firm commitments as part of any | :02:09. | :02:10.
Well, the Confederation of British Industry is one of the UK's biggest | :02:11. | :02:22.
business lobby groups. I joined by its director-general, Carolyn | :02:23. | :02:24.
Fairbairn. Good morning. First of all, your reaction. The snap | :02:25. | :02:31.
election - A good idea? More uncertainty is not welcomed by | :02:32. | :02:35.
business. But many businesses are seeing the opportunity for a | :02:36. | :02:38.
government with a stronger mandate bringing longer-term stability and | :02:39. | :02:42.
also a potential benefit in terms of timing, and that the implementation | :02:43. | :02:46.
period at the end of Article 50 was going to have a general election in | :02:47. | :02:52.
it, and now may need to be run with a bit of stability. So some good | :02:53. | :02:57.
news and silver lining from this. I assume, from your point of view, as | :02:58. | :03:04.
head of the CBI, is all about Brexit you, this election. The primers are | :03:05. | :03:09.
having an elected mandate and getting a better deal, ultimately? | :03:10. | :03:14.
De Brexit outcome is usually important for British business. They | :03:15. | :03:18.
are looking for a deal that gives the best possible access to the | :03:19. | :03:24.
market. Frictionless trade. -- The Brexit. Anything that allows that to | :03:25. | :03:28.
happen more smoothly and rapidly is welcome. And come a stronger | :03:29. | :03:31.
government mandate, the ability for a government to act in the national | :03:32. | :03:36.
interest, less influenced by party politics, I think that is something | :03:37. | :03:39.
that business is truly do welcome. How concerned are you about the | :03:40. | :03:45.
outcome, because June's referendum last year taught us it is extremely | :03:46. | :03:52.
difficult to project. And there was a lot of noise coming from top | :03:53. | :03:56.
business leaders at the time. -- predict. A lot of business leaders | :03:57. | :04:00.
seem to remain, but the public did not. And we will not know what the | :04:01. | :04:04.
outcome is, during the eighth, it is difficult to predict, and talking to | :04:05. | :04:08.
the general public, there is very mixed opinions out there, now. -- | :04:09. | :04:16.
June eight. A lot of people saying to leave are now saying there which | :04:17. | :04:24.
we stayed in. One thing we will have now is a campaign that will bring | :04:25. | :04:28.
the lens away from Brussels and on the communities and counter the UK. | :04:29. | :04:33.
We have a robust democratic process here. That is good. I think | :04:34. | :04:37.
businesses will be looking to see every party set out its stall, what | :04:38. | :04:42.
is its plan for the Brexit presents? How are we going to maintain as far | :04:43. | :04:46.
as possible the actions we have to the European market? They will also | :04:47. | :04:50.
want to see the policies that the different hearties have on the | :04:51. | :04:53.
domestic agenda. We have so many challenges around new technologies | :04:54. | :04:58.
and the importance of maintaining innovation and skill levels. -- | :04:59. | :05:02.
parties. I think one of the advantages of the campaign is that | :05:03. | :05:05.
people will be up to re-engage with the debate that has been politicised | :05:06. | :05:11.
in Europe until now. But briefly, one thing she has said is that no | :05:12. | :05:16.
deal is better than a bad deal. So could we be in a position where, if | :05:17. | :05:20.
she gets a strong mandate, where it is a hard Brexit, that is we are not | :05:21. | :05:25.
part of the single market or customs union, and I assume that that is | :05:26. | :05:29.
something that you, at the CBI, would see as unwelcome. We have been | :05:30. | :05:33.
vocal on this and we will continue to be so with whoever is in | :05:34. | :05:41.
government. And 80% of British exports would have tariffs on them. | :05:42. | :05:45.
We would have red tape. Additionally dirty for regulators without | :05:46. | :05:48.
restriction on UK products. These are very bad outcomes. And so we | :05:49. | :05:54.
hope that whatever happens, we will continue to represent our members | :05:55. | :05:57.
voices on that important issue. -- our members' voices. Thank you for | :05:58. | :06:08.
joining us. Later on, we be to the boss of WPP, to get his reaction. | :06:09. | :06:11.
Throughout the day, be gauging the reaction from top | :06:12. | :06:15.
business leaders. But now, let's about Facebook. | :06:16. | :06:18.
Mark Zuckerberg has paid his respects to the family of a man | :06:19. | :06:23.
whose killing was filmed and posted onto its side. About one hour before | :06:24. | :06:28.
the social media giant's annual developers' conference, police | :06:29. | :06:31.
revealed that the suspect had killed themselves. Steve Stephens was | :06:32. | :06:34.
believed to have uploaded a video to Facebook showing the killing of | :06:35. | :06:41.
74-year-old Mr Godwin in Cleveland on Sunday. Our north America | :06:42. | :06:45.
technology correspondent Staveley was at the developers' conference | :06:46. | :06:48.
in San Jose. Before making any announcements, Mark Zuckerberg | :06:49. | :06:55.
addressed the killing of the grandfather, footage of which was | :06:56. | :06:58.
posted on Facebook. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr | :06:59. | :07:06.
Godwin, and we have a lot of work, and will continue doing all we can | :07:07. | :07:10.
to prevent tragedies like this from happening. After the comments, he | :07:11. | :07:14.
quickly got down to business. And flowers that are blooming... | :07:15. | :07:19.
Augmented reality was the big focus this year. We saw a range of fun | :07:20. | :07:23.
features that add digital elements to the world. But as for the virtual | :07:24. | :07:29.
world, the company is launching Spaces, a place to hang out with | :07:30. | :07:33.
your friends in virtual reality, rather than real life. They're | :07:34. | :07:39.
investing in augmented reality and virtual reality. Mark Zuckerberg is | :07:40. | :07:44.
convinced that this will be a key way in how we interact with friends | :07:45. | :07:48.
online in future. But he needs to make sure that people do it through | :07:49. | :07:51.
Facebook and not their competitors. Facebook is all about scale and | :07:52. | :07:54.
engagement. So they have to make sure that they are covering every | :07:55. | :07:58.
technology. And really rivalling any newcomer who can come along and | :07:59. | :08:01.
threatened that level of engagement that they really need with users. | :08:02. | :08:07.
They really need to keep that to stay around long-term. Here is how | :08:08. | :08:10.
tight this race is becoming. On the same morning, Snapchat announced | :08:11. | :08:14.
similar augmented reality features. And it is not the only thing. | :08:15. | :08:19.
Facebook has been accused of routinely copying Snapchat's best | :08:20. | :08:23.
ideas. They cleverly invented a format, the stories format, and I do | :08:24. | :08:27.
think that it feels right at home in emerging out, -- in a messaging out. | :08:28. | :08:38.
-- app. Aside from the statement from Mark Zuckerberg, there has not | :08:39. | :08:44.
been much talk about the negative effects of social media, such as the | :08:45. | :08:49.
sharing of fake news or specialised content of our children. What other | :08:50. | :08:55.
technologies are you bringing to solve the problem of violent contact | :08:56. | :08:59.
on Facebook? Right now, we rely on people reporting content will stop | :09:00. | :09:04.
overtime, we are hoping that Artificial Intelligence can | :09:05. | :09:07.
automatically flag is content to review, so we can act much faster | :09:08. | :09:11.
than we currently do. So we are working on technologies to help us | :09:12. | :09:16.
do that. Even with its many challenges, Facebook is more | :09:17. | :09:19.
powerful now than ever. Within the year, the site will surpass 2 | :09:20. | :09:24.
million active users. Dave Lee, BBC News, San Jose. | :09:25. | :09:26.
The US investment bank Morgan Stanley will reveal | :09:27. | :10:00.
The computing giant IBM has announced a fall in sales | :10:01. | :10:04.
in the first three months of the year. | :10:05. | :10:06.
It marks the fifth straight year of declining revenues | :10:07. | :10:09.
for the company as it continues its move away | :10:10. | :10:12. |
