Now it's time for World Business Report. | :00:00. | :00:14.
Security in the skies - will EU countries be added to the US | :00:15. | :00:18.
Top officials are due to meet in Brussels. | :00:19. | :00:26.
We show you the latest creations that are grabbing the attention | :00:27. | :00:30.
Also in the programme it's "risk off" for the world's financial | :00:31. | :00:46.
markets, thanks to the latest Trump turmoil. | :00:47. | :00:47.
Today EU and US officials are meeting to discuss a potential | :00:48. | :00:58.
extension of the laptop ban on aircrafts. | :00:59. | :01:03.
In March, the Trump administration imposed new restrictions | :01:04. | :01:06.
which prevent US-bound travellers from carrying electronic devices | :01:07. | :01:10.
larger than a mobile phone into the cabin. | :01:11. | :01:12.
The original set of restrictions affected flights from eight mostly | :01:13. | :01:15.
Muslim countries including Turkey, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates | :01:16. | :01:18.
This affected many of the gulf carriers including Emirates, | :01:19. | :01:23.
Etihad and Qatar Airways, but now there are reports suggesting | :01:24. | :01:27.
that the ban could be extended to include some countries | :01:28. | :01:30.
Any immediate changes would coincide with the peak travel | :01:31. | :01:37.
This summer, more than 3,000 flights a week | :01:38. | :01:41.
Good morning. Good to see you. Do you know any more? We first heard | :01:42. | :02:00.
the rumours last week that they were going to impose a ban on all flights | :02:01. | :02:04.
from the EU to the US starting last Friday. The three major American | :02:05. | :02:11.
carriers, United, American and Delta spoke to the Department of Homeland | :02:12. | :02:14.
Security on Thursday and warned them that they were not ready to | :02:15. | :02:17.
implement the ban immediately. Despite that, Delta had another sad | :02:18. | :02:23.
airports warning that people that the ban was already in place. There | :02:24. | :02:27.
was a meeting today between the EU Commission and the Department of | :02:28. | :02:31.
Homeland Security to discuss the implementation of the ban but it | :02:32. | :02:37.
does appear that it's going to spread to all the EU airport | :02:38. | :02:42.
departures. Impact will this have? 65 million people travel across the | :02:43. | :02:47.
Atlantic every year. It has a huge impact on business travel, | :02:48. | :02:50.
obviously, because they will not be able to work on the plane. There are | :02:51. | :02:54.
implications for insurers because as a general rule, insurers do not | :02:55. | :03:00.
cover electronic used or in the hold and it has also been warned that | :03:01. | :03:04.
there is a potential fire risk of potentially hundreds of pieces of | :03:05. | :03:09.
electronics arm seen in a hold. Because of a fire was to happen in | :03:10. | :03:13.
the hold there is no-one there to smell the smoke or alert anybody at | :03:14. | :03:18.
the time. Absolutely. There are sprinklers but we are aware of the | :03:19. | :03:23.
least to cargo planes that have crashed as a result of lithium | :03:24. | :03:26.
batteries so there is a concern. This has been going on since March | :03:27. | :03:30.
that the likes of Etihad and Emirates, they have been trying to | :03:31. | :03:36.
grapple with this problem. How is it affected them? It has caused a | :03:37. | :03:42.
substantial reduction in demand. Emirates have already announced a | :03:43. | :03:45.
reduction in flights to the US because there are not enough | :03:46. | :03:50.
passengers. A number of airlines are offering to lend passengers tablets | :03:51. | :03:53.
to work on but, of course, you have no control over the information that | :03:54. | :03:57.
is an your own equipment because it is out of your hands and you must be | :03:58. | :04:01.
very careful in ensuring that everything is backed up before you | :04:02. | :04:04.
give it over. Will we get to the point where this becomes a new | :04:05. | :04:09.
normal in the same way we had to get used to not having liquids and that | :04:10. | :04:12.
sort of paraphernalia when you go on a plane of having small bits of | :04:13. | :04:16.
liquids in a plastic bag. Will this become the new normal across the | :04:17. | :04:20.
world? I know that some of the global leaders like that Prime | :04:21. | :04:23.
Minister of Australia saying he would like to see this in place with | :04:24. | :04:27.
all flights going in and out of Australia. Unfortunately it does | :04:28. | :04:31.
look as if this will be the new normal and we need to get used to | :04:32. | :04:35.
the fact that we will need to bring a book to read. Interesting. That | :04:36. | :04:40.
could be good for booksellers. Thank you for coming in. We appreciated | :04:41. | :04:43.
and that meeting is happening today between EU officials and US | :04:44. | :04:49.
officials. When we have news of the outcomes and the discussions we will | :04:50. | :04:50.
update you. the US aircraft maker Boeing has | :04:51. | :04:51.
delivered its first Malindo Airways will be | :04:52. | :04:55.
the first carrier to fly Boeing temporarily suspended | :04:56. | :04:58.
the fleet last week - The owner of TJ Maxx has | :04:59. | :05:01.
reported soft sales growth - further clouding the outlook | :05:02. | :05:09.
for the US retail industry. TJX also says profits | :05:10. | :05:11.
will decline this quarter - The forecast highlighted | :05:12. | :05:13.
the challenges facing the industry. Stores are under increasing pressure | :05:14. | :05:21.
from online competitors. A pair of diamond earrings has been | :05:22. | :05:28.
sold for a record price The flawless pear-shaped diamonds, | :05:29. | :05:32.
one pink, the other blue, fetched a combined price | :05:33. | :05:35.
of almost $58 million. I am expecting their | :05:36. | :05:48.
arrival quite soon... More and more jobs look set to be | :05:49. | :05:52.
automated in the near future, something that's concerning | :05:53. | :05:56.
workers and politicians. But how capable are the latest | :05:57. | :05:57.
machines, and are they really likely to replace humans altogether, | :05:58. | :06:01.
or help us all be more productive Rory Cellan-Jones reports | :06:02. | :06:04.
from the Innorobo exhibition in Paris where the world's leading | :06:05. | :06:06.
robotics firms and startups From around the world the robots | :06:07. | :06:21.
have come to Paris to show off their new skills. This one responds to the | :06:22. | :06:25.
colour green. It seems to be distracted by the cameraman. And | :06:26. | :06:29.
they are leaving the factories and trying to find roles in our everyday | :06:30. | :06:34.
lives. Basically he has three functions. The first is to monitor | :06:35. | :06:41.
people's health. They are after carer. This robot is designed to be | :06:42. | :06:46.
a companion, monitoring the health of an elderly person and alerting | :06:47. | :06:50.
relatives if necessary. It will show the mood of the person, where the | :06:51. | :06:58.
activity is, if there is no activity you will be alerted. It is like a | :06:59. | :07:03.
nurse at home. More and more robots are now appearing in customer | :07:04. | :07:07.
service roles. This is essentially the kind of automated ticket machine | :07:08. | :07:11.
you see in cinemas already but with a robot interface. I can interact | :07:12. | :07:16.
with it. I can pay for my tickets as you would normally and I can also | :07:17. | :07:20.
leave a video review and it will react to me in certain ways. They | :07:21. | :07:25.
claim it is 30 times more interactive than a standard, | :07:26. | :07:32.
ordinarily ticket machine. This Chinese robot is supposed to help | :07:33. | :07:35.
out in the supermarket, offering advice to customers. You have to | :07:36. | :07:40.
bend down to talk to it. I wanted to know why so small. The robot is to | :07:41. | :07:46.
begin to human or it and people will think it too dangerous. Our idea was | :07:47. | :07:54.
to design a robot to be lovely and friendly. The big fear is that they | :07:55. | :07:58.
will take jobs. This autonomous tractor is the farmworker of the | :07:59. | :08:04.
future. This delivery robot could replace Van drivers. The industry | :08:05. | :08:07.
claims the robots will improve our working lives. It only takes the | :08:08. | :08:13.
parts and tasks that are repetitive or dangerous or uninteresting, where | :08:14. | :08:22.
we have no value. That value of more time. These autonomous fish should | :08:23. | :08:26.
not take anybody's job and they do not need feeding. We will need to | :08:27. | :08:30.
get used to robots and all sorts of unexpected places. Fascinating. More | :08:31. | :08:41.
about that on our website. A look at the markets. As I mentioned at the | :08:42. | :08:45.
beginning of the programme it is all about safe havens at the moment | :08:46. | :08:48.
because there is real concern, growing concern around the world | :08:49. | :08:53.
about the turmoil engulfing President Donald Trump's | :08:54. | :08:56.
administration with regards to the latest revelations and what he has | :08:57. | :09:00.
been saying to various people and we will talk about that in a bit more | :09:01. | :09:04.
detail when we review the papers and the news. But just to say that the | :09:05. | :09:08.
yen has gotten stronger, it is seen as a safe haven. Japan stocks are | :09:09. | :09:16.
down at the moment. The big exporters have falling shares | :09:17. | :09:19.
because their goods more expensive overseas when the yen is strong. The | :09:20. | :09:24.
price of oil has dipped a little bit. Let's have a look at the US. | :09:25. | :09:27.
Futures markets are implying that the US markets will open lower | :09:28. | :09:31.
because of concern over what is going on in the White House. You can | :09:32. | :09:35.
see the Dow is down. It is not forget that these markets have been | :09:36. | :09:39.
hitting record highs of late so the price of gold has gone up, the US | :09:40. | :09:44.
dollar has fallen, the yen has got stronger. I will return soon to talk | :09:45. | :09:48.
you through some of the other stories in the papers. | :09:49. | :09:58.
It's nicknamed Plastic Island and it's not hard to figure out why | :09:59. | :10:01.
- 38 million items have washed up on the beaches on Henderson Island, | :10:02. | :10:04.
an uninhabited remote British territory in the South Pacific. | :10:05. | :10:08. |
