Christians have celebrated Easter I'm standing in the ruins | :00:25. | :00:31.
It's a reminder of humanity's capacity for destruction, | :00:32. | :00:36.
whilst our magnificent new cathedral, built to replace the old, | :00:36. | :00:41.
underlines the fact of Resurrection. | :00:41. | :00:46.
This year is the cathedral's golden jubilee - | :00:46. | :00:50.
50 years since its consecration. | :00:50. | :00:54.
50 years of celebrating that Jesus is alive. | :00:54. | :01:01.
BELL RINGS OUT | :01:01. | :01:11.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds | :01:11. | :03:45.
He raised him from the dead and gave him glory. | :03:45. | :03:50.
We have been given new birth into a living hope | :03:50. | :03:53.
By the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. | :03:53. | :03:57.
Alleluia! Christ is risen | :03:57. | :04:00.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia! | :04:00. | :04:05.
We come to God as one from whom no secrets are hidden, | :04:06. | :04:09.
to ask for his forgiveness and peace. | :04:09. | :04:13.
Like Mary at the empty tomb, | :04:13. | :04:16.
we fail to grasp the wonder of your presence. | :04:16. | :04:20.
Lord, have mercy. | :04:20. | :04:22.
Lord, have mercy. | :04:22. | :04:25.
Like the disciples behind locked doors, | :04:25. | :04:28.
we are afraid to be seen as your followers. | :04:28. | :04:31.
Christ, have mercy. | :04:31. | :04:34.
Christ, have mercy. | :04:34. | :04:37.
Like Thomas in the upper room, we are slow to believe. | :04:37. | :04:40.
Lord, have mercy. | :04:40. | :04:43.
Lord, have mercy. | :04:43. | :04:47.
May the God of love and power | :04:47. | :04:49.
forgive you and free you from your sins, | :04:49. | :04:52.
heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, | :04:52. | :04:55.
and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. | :04:55. | :04:59.
Amen. | :04:59. | :05:09. | |
| :05:09. | :05:16. | ||

| :05:34. | :05:37. | ||

# Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us | :06:26. | :06:36.
| :06:36. | :06:38. | ||
# Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer | :06:38. | :06:48.
| :06:48. | :06:49. | ||
# Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father | :06:49. | :06:58.
# Have mercy upon us | :06:58. | :07:08.
# For thou only art holy Thou only art the Lord | :07:08. | :07:15.
# Thou only, O Christ with the Holy Ghost | :07:15. | :07:24.
# Art most high in the glory of God the Father. # | :07:24. | :07:34.
| :07:34. | :07:42. | ||
# Amen. # | :07:42. | :07:52.
| :07:52. | :07:56. | ||
Let us pray for God to renew us in the glory of the risen Christ. | :07:56. | :08:01.
Lord of all life and power, | :08:01. | :08:04.
who through the mighty resurrection of your Son | :08:04. | :08:07.
overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him, | :08:07. | :08:14.
grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, | :08:14. | :08:20.
may reign with him in glory, | :08:20. | :08:24.
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, | :08:24. | :08:27.
glory and might, now and in all eternity. | :08:27. | :08:32.
Amen. | :08:32. | :08:39. | |
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. | :08:39. | :08:43.
Then Peter began to speak to them - | :08:43. | :08:46.
"I truly understand that God shows no partiality, | :08:46. | :08:52.
"but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right | :08:52. | :08:56.
"is acceptable to him. | :08:56. | :08:59.
"You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, | :08:59. | :09:03.
"preaching peace by Jesus Christ - he is Lord of all. | :09:03. | :09:10.
"That message spread throughout Judea, | :09:10. | :09:13.
"beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced - | :09:13. | :09:18.
"how God anointed Jesus of Nazarethwith the Holy Spirit and with power, | :09:18. | :09:26.
"how he went about doing good | :09:26. | :09:29.
"and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, | :09:29. | :09:33.
"for God was with him. | :09:33. | :09:36.
"We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. | :09:36. | :09:43.
"They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, | :09:43. | :09:47.
"but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, | :09:47. | :09:53.
"not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, | :09:53. | :10:00.
"and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. | :10:00. | :10:06.
"He commanded us to preach to the people | :10:06. | :10:10.
"and to testify that he is the one ordained by God | :10:10. | :10:14.
"as judge of the living and the dead. | :10:15. | :10:19.
"All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him | :10:19. | :10:24.
"receives forgiveness of sins through his name." | :10:25. | :10:30.
This is the word of the Lord. | :10:31. | :10:34.
Thanks be to God. | :10:34. | :10:44.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. | :13:32. | :13:41.
ALL: Glory to you, O Lord. | :13:41. | :13:51.
| :13:51. | :13:51. | ||
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, | :13:51. | :13:54.
Mary Magdalene came to the tomb | :13:54. | :13:58.
and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. | :13:58. | :14:00.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, | :14:00. | :14:04.
the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, | :14:04. | :14:07.
"They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, | :14:08. | :14:10.
"and we do not know where they have laid him." | :14:10. | :14:14.
Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. | :14:14. | :14:18.
The two were running together, | :14:18. | :14:21.
but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. | :14:21. | :14:26.
He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, | :14:26. | :14:30.
but he did not go in. | :14:30. | :14:33.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. | :14:33. | :14:37.
He saw the linen wrappings lying there, | :14:37. | :14:40.
and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head, | :14:40. | :14:43.
not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. | :14:43. | :14:49.
Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, | :14:49. | :14:53.
also went in, and he saw and believed, | :14:53. | :14:56.
for as yet they did not understand the scripture, | :14:56. | :14:59.
that he must rise from the dead. | :14:59. | :15:02.
Then the disciples returned to their homes. | :15:02. | :15:09.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. | :15:09. | :15:14.
ALL: This is the Gospel of the Lord. | :15:14. | :15:17.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds | :15:30. | :16:40.
Heavenly Father, help us to listen to your word with understanding, | :16:40. | :16:43.
to receive it with faith, and to obey it with courage, | :16:43. | :16:46.
for Jesus' sake. | :16:46. | :16:49.
Amen. | :16:49. | :16:55. | |
"Absolutely absurd" - | :16:55. | :16:58.
I think those were the words I used many years ago | :16:58. | :17:02.
when a friend told me that he had come to believe | :17:02. | :17:07.
that Jesus had risen from the dead. | :17:07. | :17:11.
"Dead men don't rise," I stated with confidence. | :17:11. | :17:15.
"You have taken leave of your senses." | :17:16. | :17:19.
He persisted, "Of course, dead people don't normally rise, | :17:19. | :17:25.
"but the laws of science are for normal times. | :17:25. | :17:30.
"When extreme situations arise, unusual things happen. | :17:30. | :17:37.
"If you go to black holes, the speed of light | :17:37. | :17:40.
"or the beginning of time - | :17:40. | :17:43.
"in those unusual circumstances, unusual things happen." | :17:43. | :17:49.
He continued by pressing his point. | :17:49. | :17:52.
"If it is true that God has stepped into the world | :17:52. | :17:57.
"in the person of Jesus, then that is not a normal circumstance. | :17:57. | :18:03.
"Indeed it would be unique. | :18:03. | :18:07.
"You might expect something pretty unusual about his death." | :18:07. | :18:13.
I had to admit the rational nature of the argument. | :18:13. | :18:17.
"OK," I said, "but that doesn't mean that it actually happened!" | :18:18. | :18:23.
I was a barrister at the time | :18:23. | :18:26.
and prided myself on my legally trained mind. | :18:26. | :18:30.
"I will look at the evidence," I said. | :18:30. | :18:34.
I did that over the next weeks and came to three conclusions. | :18:34. | :18:41.
Firstly, Jesus had clearly died. | :18:41. | :18:47.
The Romans were experts at crucifixion | :18:47. | :18:50.
and didn't make mistakes. | :18:50. | :18:53.
Secondly, many people had clearly testified that they had seen | :18:53. | :18:59.
the risen Jesus over a period of weeks. | :18:59. | :19:03.
Their accounts struck me as the artless and genuine attempts | :19:03. | :19:09.
of eye witnesses to describe real events. | :19:09. | :19:15.
Thirdly, and for me, crucially, nothing else explained | :19:15. | :19:20.
the transformation of those first Christians | :19:20. | :19:26.
from frightened cowards, hiding behind locked doors, | :19:26. | :19:30.
denying that they even knew Jesus, into such committed believers | :19:30. | :19:36.
that they were prepared to witness to those same enemies | :19:36. | :19:42.
and with such authority and conviction | :19:42. | :19:46.
that they turned their world upside down in a generation, | :19:46. | :19:52.
even though it cost most of them their lives. | :19:52. | :19:56.
Much to my surprise and discomfort, | :19:57. | :20:00.
I found the evidence pointing to the truth of the Resurrection. | :20:01. | :20:06.
Like millions of others before me, | :20:06. | :20:11.
I had become convinced of what Jean Vanier calls | :20:11. | :20:14.
"the most stupendous cosmic reality in the history of the universe". | :20:14. | :20:22.
The implications of this are enormous. | :20:22. | :20:27.
Firstly, the Resurrection of Jesus | :20:27. | :20:30.
is a clear vindication of his claims, | :20:30. | :20:34.
his divinity and his death for our sins. | :20:34. | :20:39.
It means that he is alive now and can be met today. | :20:39. | :20:45.
Here in Coventry and all over the world, | :20:45. | :20:49.
we have seen Jesus change the lives | :20:49. | :20:52.
of people from very different backgrounds - | :20:52. | :20:57.
criminals and professors, homeless and wealthy. | :20:57. | :21:04.
Secondly, the Resurrection means there is hope beyond death. | :21:04. | :21:08.
It in no way negates the reality and negativity of death, | :21:08. | :21:13.
but it does give hope. | :21:13. | :21:16.
Death is still an enemy to be faced by all, | :21:16. | :21:21.
but it is a defeated enemy. | :21:21. | :21:25.
The New Testament celebrates that hope, indeed it flaunts it - | :21:25. | :21:30.
"Where O death is your sting?" | :21:30. | :21:35.
Thirdly, the Resurrection is the pledge and beginning | :21:35. | :21:39.
of Creation's renewal. | :21:39. | :21:43.
Eric Mascall calls this "the ultimate transfiguration of matter". | :21:43. | :21:51.
The Resurrection affirms the goodness of God's creation. | :21:51. | :21:57.
This is not "pie in the sky when you die". | :21:57. | :22:01.
When Jesus rose, he didn't leave creation behind. | :22:01. | :22:05.
He kept his physicality. | :22:06. | :22:09.
We look forward not to salvation from the world | :22:09. | :22:14.
but to the salvation of the world - a new Heaven and a new Earth. | :22:14. | :22:22.
This indeed is good news, but it is also politically subversive. | :22:22. | :22:30.
The Resurrection proclaims that Jesus is Lord. | :22:30. | :22:36.
It declares God's claim on his world. | :22:36. | :22:41.
It gives us a glimpse of the kind of world we are going to be | :22:41. | :22:46.
and encourages us to work towards that world now. | :22:46. | :22:52.
I have been a follower of Jesus for 40 years now, | :22:52. | :22:56.
and he has never let me down. | :22:56. | :23:00.
The risen Jesus brings the most exciting, | :23:00. | :23:04.
practical and rewarding revolution to life. | :23:04. | :23:09.
But don't take my word for it. Look into his claims yourself. | :23:09. | :23:15.
I challenge you to read just one of the gospels | :23:15. | :23:22.
and come to your own conclusion. | :23:22. | :23:32.
| :23:32. | :23:32. | ||
Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds | :23:32. | :25:57.
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty | :25:57. | :25:59.
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. | :25:59. | :26:03.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, | :26:03. | :26:06.
eternally begotten of the Father | :26:06. | :26:10.
God from God, light from light, true God from true God | :26:10. | :26:16.
Begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father | :26:17. | :26:20.
Through him all things were made | :26:20. | :26:24.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, | :26:24. | :26:28.
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, | :26:28. | :26:32.
and was made man. | :26:32. | :26:35.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, | :26:35. | :26:39.
he suffered death and was buried. | :26:39. | :26:42.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures | :26:42. | :26:47.
He ascended into heaven | :26:47. | :26:49.
and is seated at the right hand of the Father. | :26:49. | :26:52.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, | :26:53. | :26:57.
and his kingdom will have no end. | :26:57. | :27:00.
We believe in the Holy Spirit | :27:00. | :27:03.
The Lord, the giver of life | :27:03. | :27:06.
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son | :27:06. | :27:08.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified | :27:08. | :27:12.
He has spoken through the prophets. | :27:12. | :27:15.
We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. | :27:15. | :27:19.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. | :27:19. | :27:22.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, | :27:23. | :27:25.
and the life of the world to come. | :27:25. | :27:28.
Amen. | :27:28. | :27:30. | |
In joy and love, let us pray to the Father. | :27:30. | :27:40.
| :27:40. | :27:44. | ||
50 years ago, our cathedral was consecrated | :27:44. | :27:48.
alongside the bombed-out remains of the old. | :27:48. | :27:51.
To mark our Golden Jubilee year, | :27:51. | :27:54.
we are designating the old cathedral ruins | :27:54. | :27:57.
as a memorial to civilians killed, injured | :27:57. | :28:00.
and traumatised by conflict worldwide. | :28:00. | :28:04.
During the 40 days of Lent | :28:04. | :28:07.
we have been focusing on the impactof war in our prayers and reflection. | :28:07. | :28:13.
Today, we bring this cycle of prayer to its conclusion | :28:13. | :28:17.
as we pray in the light of the hope and joy | :28:17. | :28:20.
of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. | :28:20. | :28:30.
| :28:30. | :28:31. | ||
Traditionally, the ruins have been a focal point | :28:32. | :28:33.
for remembrance of the destruction of the cathedral in 1940. | :28:33. | :28:35.
More than 70 years on, we recognise the damage | :28:36. | :28:39.
still being caused by aerial bombing around the world, | :28:39. | :28:43.
and in particular, its devastating impact on civilians. | :28:43. | :28:49.
And so let us pray for the coming of the rule of the Prince of Peace. | :28:49. | :28:54.
Lord of life, how we long for you to usher in the time | :28:54. | :28:58.
when nation will no longer take up sword against nation. | :28:58. | :29:04.
Risen Lord Jesus, to your world disfigured by aerial bombing, | :29:04. | :29:11.
bring your new life of healing and hope. | :29:11. | :29:16.
The environment is often overlooked as a victim of violent conflict, | :29:16. | :29:21.
as toxic chemicals are spilled and the soil is contaminated. | :29:21. | :29:26.
And so let us pray for the healing of the Earth | :29:26. | :29:30.
and for all who are working | :29:30. | :29:32.
to reverse the damage done to our fragile planet. | :29:32. | :29:37.
Lord of life, how we long for an end to the brutality | :29:37. | :29:42.
which hurts the world you created for us to enjoy. | :29:42. | :29:46.
Risen Lord Jesus, | :29:46. | :29:49.
to your world wounded by the environmental effects of war, | :29:49. | :29:54.
bring your new life of healing and hope. | :29:54. | :30:00.
In many countries where there is conflict, | :30:00. | :30:03.
children are often recruited by military groups. | :30:03. | :30:07.
The scars left by this experience of war | :30:07. | :30:10.
are deep-rooted and long-lasting. | :30:10. | :30:13.
And so let us pray for an end to the abuse of children | :30:13. | :30:18.
and for the healing of lives overshadowed by conflict. | :30:18. | :30:24.
How we long for the world's children to experience | :30:24. | :30:28.
the warmth of your love and the hope of a future without violence. | :30:28. | :30:33.
Risen Lord Jesus, | :30:33. | :30:36.
to your world shamed by the exploitation of children, | :30:36. | :30:40.
bring your new life of healing and hope. | :30:40. | :30:47.
War is one of the main reasons | :30:47. | :30:49.
why people are forced to leave their homes as refugees, | :30:49. | :30:54.
while suspicion of migrants is at an all-time high in many nations. | :30:54. | :31:00.
And so let us pray for an end to the conflicts | :31:00. | :31:03.
which cause the mass movement of people | :31:03. | :31:06.
and for the gift of hospitality to those who need it. | :31:06. | :31:11.
How we long for those far from home to find a welcome | :31:11. | :31:15.
that reflects your love for the whole human family. | :31:15. | :31:19.
Risen Lord Jesus, | :31:19. | :31:22.
to your world confronted by the suffering of refugees, | :31:23. | :31:26.
bring your new life of healing and hope. | :31:26. | :31:33.
Jesus, Lord of life | :31:33. | :31:36.
In your mercy, hear us, accept our prayers, | :31:36. | :31:39.
and be with us always. Amen. | :31:39. | :31:48.
Alleluia! Christ is risen. | :31:48. | :31:51.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia! | :31:51. | :31:55.
The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, | :31:55. | :31:59.
"Peace be with you." | :31:59. | :32:02.
Then were they glad when they saw the Lord. | :32:02. | :32:04.
Alleluia! | :32:04. | :32:07.
The peace of the Lord be always with you | :32:07. | :32:09.
And also with you. Alleluia! | :32:10. | :32:14.
Let us offer one another a sign of peace. | :32:14. | :32:24.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 153 seconds | :32:24. | :35:31.
and all we have heard is true. | :35:31. | :35:35.
When you break bread, | :35:35. | :35:37.
may we recognise you as the fire that burns within us, | :35:37. | :35:41.
that we may bring light to your world. | :35:41. | :35:45.
Amen. | :35:45. | :35:47. | |
The Lord is here. | :35:47. | :35:49.
His Spirit is with us. | :35:49. | :35:51.
Lift up your hearts. | :35:51. | :35:52.
We lift them to the Lord. | :35:53. | :35:54.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | :35:54. | :35:58.
It is right to give thanks and praise. | :35:58. | :36:01.
We give you thanks and praise for the Gospel we have received. | :36:01. | :36:05.
Christ died for our sins. Alleluia! | :36:05. | :36:09.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia! | :36:09. | :36:13.
Death comes to all through Adam, and sin reigns for a time. | :36:13. | :36:18.
New life without end comes through Christ, | :36:18. | :36:22.
and he reigns for ever. Alleluia! | :36:22. | :36:26.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia! | :36:26. | :36:30.
Death, where is your victory? Death, where is your sting? | :36:30. | :36:35.
Death is swallowed up in victory, | :36:35. | :36:38.
the victory you give us in Christ. Alleluia! | :36:38. | :36:42.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia! | :36:42. | :36:47.
We have been crucified with Christ, and live his risen life, | :36:47. | :36:52.
to praise you for ever with angels and archangels. | :36:52. | :37:02.

# Hosanna in the highest. # | :39:09. | :39:17.
# Hosanna in the highest | :39:17. | :39:26.
We praise and bless you, loving Father, | :39:26. | :39:30.
through Jesus Christ, our Lord, and as we obey his command, | :39:30. | :39:34.
send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured | :39:34. | :39:40.
may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. | :39:40. | :39:48.
On the night before he died he had supper with his friends | :39:48. | :39:52.
and, taking bread, he praised you. | :39:52. | :39:56.
He broke the bread, gave it to them and said, | :39:56. | :40:00.
Take, eat - this is my body which is given for you, | :40:00. | :40:06.
do this in remembrance of me. | :40:06. | :40:13.
When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. | :40:13. | :40:18.
Again he praised you, gave it to them and said, | :40:18. | :40:22.
Drink this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, | :40:22. | :40:26.
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. | :40:26. | :40:32.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. | :40:32. | :40:42.
| :40:42. | :40:42. | ||
So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, | :40:42. | :40:46.
in him we plead with confidence | :40:46. | :40:49.
his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross. | :40:49. | :40:53.
Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, | :40:53. | :40:58.
we proclaim his death and resurrection | :40:58. | :41:01.
until he comes in glory. | :41:01. | :41:04.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus. | :41:05. | :41:08.

| :41:18. | :41:26. | ||
Lord of all life, help us to work together | :41:26. | :41:29.
for that day when your kingdom comes | :41:29. | :41:32.
and justice and mercy will be seen in all the Earth. | :41:33. | :41:38.
Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms | :41:38. | :41:42.
and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven. | :41:43. | :41:48.
Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, | :41:48. | :41:52.
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, | :41:52. | :41:55.
all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father. | :41:55. | :42:05.
