wherein a few days time, the World Cup kicks off. Players and fans from

:00:24.:00:28.

across the globe are coming to Brazil for what is one of the

:00:29.:00:34.

world's great sporting events. It is also Pentecost Sunday we will be

:00:35.:00:38.

joining a Elim Pentecostal Church congregation in Birmingham. First of

:00:39.:00:46.

all, let's speak to a couple who live in Brazil. Martin, you live in

:00:47.:00:50.

the north of this country in the jungle. But what is it like? There

:00:51.:00:57.

are plenty of challenges. You are really isolated. But you have the

:00:58.:01:02.

cultural challenges. Brazil is not just one culture, there are various

:01:03.:01:06.

cultures all in one country. What does Pentecost mean to you? It is

:01:07.:01:11.

summed up in the power of the Holy Spirit. It brings salvation,

:01:12.:01:18.

healing, miracles in an everyday and practical way. In the Amazon, we

:01:19.:01:22.

have been there for 12 years, we have set up a school for kids, four

:01:23.:01:27.

to six-year-olds. That is where the nude was. No one was educating those

:01:28.:01:32.

kids. We see where the practical need is, we fulfil that need and we

:01:33.:01:45.

bring them Jesus in a practical way. Rebecca has been 24 years in the

:01:46.:01:50.

Amazon. Jess and Mark, you live down here in Rio. What are the particular

:01:51.:01:56.

challenges that you find here working and living in Rio from a

:01:57.:02:02.

faith perspective? From a faith perspective, I think there is a

:02:03.:02:05.

challenge to be a peaceful presence here. There is a lot of violence,

:02:06.:02:10.

there is a lot of angst and we have a choice to be joyful. We need to be

:02:11.:02:16.

joyful. I think there is a challenge also for churches to work together,

:02:17.:02:22.

to be in unity, to work in unity and to get behind good projects and good

:02:23.:02:28.

campaigns that are running. How are you marking Pentecost, particularly

:02:29.:02:33.

during the World Cup season? One of the messages is that God brings us

:02:34.:02:38.

together from all the nations on earth and there will be lots of

:02:39.:02:42.

countries coming together to Rio for the World Cup. We are excited about

:02:43.:02:46.

the Alpha course which is running in lots of different languages in lots

:02:47.:02:49.

of different countries around the world. We will be taking our VW van

:02:50.:02:54.

around the city and showing the alpha films and starting a

:02:55.:02:58.

conversation outside lots of different sorts of churches here in

:02:59.:03:04.

Rio. Who will you be following? I will be supporting England all the

:03:05.:03:14.

way, come on, England! I am Welsh, I will not say anything! Thank you for

:03:15.:03:18.

joining us here in Rio de Janeiro. It is now time to hand back to

:03:19.:03:22.

Birmingham for a special service to mark Pentecost Sunday.

:03:23.:03:29.

Good morning and welcome to Birmingham Christian Centre. We are

:03:30.:03:32.

delighted to welcome you all here today. As on the first day of

:03:33.:03:37.

Pentecost, where we drew many nations together, we here are a

:03:38.:03:45.

family, a church in Birmingham, that has many nationalities amongst us.

:03:46.:03:47.

Right here in the centre of Birmingham, we worship together.

:03:48.:03:52.

From Brazil to Birmingham, come on, let's all worship together and sing

:03:53.:03:56.

to the one who poured out his Holy Spirit on that day. Amen.

:03:57.:04:12.

:11:48.:11:56.

Let's take a moment to celebrate our friendship and our life together by

:11:57.:12:32.

taking some time to say hello to one another. Please find someone around

:12:33.:12:35.

you and say hello to them and enjoy today together.

:12:36.:12:44.

At this time, Patricia, a la community director is talking to

:12:45.:13:02.

Marta. So, Marta, you have been coming to Birmingham Christian

:13:03.:13:05.

centre for several years. What is the best part of being part of this

:13:06.:13:11.

family? This is a great church, it is an international church. There

:13:12.:13:16.

are people from Nigeria, Poland, Germany and I am from Brazil. And

:13:17.:13:25.

most importantly, this is a church that preaches the true gospel of

:13:26.:13:33.

Jesus, that is the main thing. Fantastic. So you are Brazilian? You

:13:34.:13:39.

will be watching the World Cup? Yes, can't wait. Hopefully Brazil will

:13:40.:13:46.

win! Who will you be supporting? I am from Sao Paulo. I support

:13:47.:13:52.

Corinthians. Fantastic, thank you. Let's read the first hand account of

:13:53.:13:57.

what today is all about, when the Holy Spirit was given to Christians

:13:58.:14:02.

in power. So that they could effectively serve God in this world.

:14:03.:14:08.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.

:14:09.:14:12.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven

:14:13.:14:15.

and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

:14:16.:14:18.

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire

:14:19.:14:20.

that separated and came to rest on each of them.

:14:21.:14:23.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit

:14:24.:14:25.

and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

:14:26.:14:33.

God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

:14:34.:14:39.

a crowd came together in bewilderment,

:14:40.:14:43.

because each one heard their own language being spoken.

:14:44.:14:46.

aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?

:14:47.:14:50.

Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

:14:51.:14:54.

Parthians, Medes and Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia,

:14:55.:14:57.

Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

:14:58.:14:59.

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene.

:15:00.:15:05.

Visitors from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism,

:15:06.:15:09.

We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

:15:10.:15:15.

Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, what does this mean?

:15:16.:15:39.

tell our places of education and fill our churches.

:15:40.:15:42.

# Our Father, all of heaven roars your name

:15:43.:15:45.

# Sing louder, let this place erupt with praise

:15:46.:15:51.

# Can you hear it, the sound of heaven touching earth?

:15:52.:16:01.

# The sound of heaven touching earth?

:16:02.:16:04.

# Our Father, all of heaven roars your name

:16:05.:16:10.

# Sing louder, let this place erupt with praise

:16:11.:16:16.

# The sound of heaven touching earth?

:16:17.:16:31.

# King Jesus, you're the name we're lifting high

:16:32.:17:27.

# Your glory, shaking up the earth and skies

:17:28.:17:34.

# Revival, we want to see your kingdom here

:17:35.:17:51.

# King Jesus, you're the name we're lifting high

:17:52.:18:24.

# Your glory, shaking up the earth and skies

:18:25.:18:32.

# Revival, we want to see your kingdom here

:18:33.:18:40.

# King Jesus, you're the name we're lifting high

:18:41.:18:50.

# Your glory, shaking up the earth and skies

:18:51.:19:00.

# Revival, we want to see your kingdom here

:19:01.:19:06.

We have got an illustration for you today of why Pentecost is so

:19:07.:20:15.

important. We as Christians have a role in society to be a positive

:20:16.:20:23.

influence and daylight for everyone. And therefore we bring the warmth

:20:24.:20:31.

and the love of God to everyone that we meet, that is our role. Now, on

:20:32.:20:37.

the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to give us more power,

:20:38.:20:46.

more energy, so that... There are times, some situations that would

:20:47.:20:51.

take a long time, like this candle would take a long time to melt,

:20:52.:20:57.

wouldn't it? With just that. Waiting for this candle to melt, we are

:20:58.:21:00.

going to be sad to lose quite a long time! I think I can help it along a

:21:01.:21:08.

little bit here! And this is kind of what the Holy Spirit is like when he

:21:09.:21:15.

fills us in power on the Pentecost day. John the Baptist said of Jesus,

:21:16.:21:21.

he would baptise us with fire so that we can melt through situations

:21:22.:21:24.

that we normally would not be able to cope with without the help and

:21:25.:21:33.

power of the Holy Spirit! So it is important... As Kim to fill

:21:34.:21:38.

you with the Holy Spirit, let's give him praise, come on! -- ask him.

:21:39.:21:48.

Let's hope we set the world on fire, and certainly not our building, no!

:21:49.:21:54.

One of the great things about Pentecost is the incredible fact

:21:55.:21:58.

that people from all backgrounds and nationalities can fit and be part of

:21:59.:22:02.

the church family. Of all the groups and institutions across the world,

:22:03.:22:07.

the church is unique in its diversity. This is what the Holy

:22:08.:22:13.

Spirit birth that Pentecost, a church where everyone could be part

:22:14.:22:17.

of. To tell us about his journey into faith, and how fate has

:22:18.:22:24.

affected his life, is Leandro, a native Brazilian and 18 part of our

:22:25.:22:26.

church here in Birmingham. My name is Leandro Manduca, I am

:22:27.:22:43.

half Italian and have Brazilian. And I am also passionate for football

:22:44.:22:49.

and coffee. When I was 11 years old, I had an epileptic fit. My mother

:22:50.:22:56.

was with me, you know, she was crying and screaming that I was

:22:57.:23:02.

dying. That was very scary. After that epileptic fit, I had a couple

:23:03.:23:10.

more. The doctors, they were a little bit concerned about a sport

:23:11.:23:17.

they found in my brain. They didn't know what it was. -- spot. When I

:23:18.:23:24.

was 13 years old, my grandmother invited me to the church, where the

:23:25.:23:32.

pastor was preaching about healing. Then they told everyone at the end

:23:33.:23:36.

to place a hand where we felt that we felt something, and I did not

:23:37.:23:42.

know where to place my hand, I placed it on my heart like that, and

:23:43.:23:48.

with my eyes closed, and suddenly, I don't know what happens, I don't

:23:49.:23:52.

know how to explain exactly, but what I felt was someone touching me

:23:53.:24:01.

like this. Something going through me, inside of me, and then it

:24:02.:24:11.

disappeared. Then I felt like peace inside of me, you know, nothing too

:24:12.:24:15.

concerned about. And then we went to the doctor, we'd all this kind

:24:16.:24:22.

again, he couldn't see any more the spot. I think God used that

:24:23.:24:27.

situation to bring my whole family to his presence. And I believe that,

:24:28.:24:34.

from what happens to me, it is to tell people that God has the power

:24:35.:24:40.

to heal, has the power to do anything if you believe.

:24:41.:24:47.

The whole idea to come to Europe, or to the UK especially, wasn't in my

:24:48.:24:57.

mind. I felt that from God, where I came, with no knowledge of, you

:24:58.:25:02.

know, the country, the culture, the language, and in a very short space

:25:03.:25:09.

of time overcome everything, you know, and get a degree, and get a

:25:10.:25:17.

job. I think God can fulfil when you are his presence, and that is what I

:25:18.:25:21.

felt throughout this process. The Holy Spirit, I believe that the Holy

:25:22.:25:26.

Spirit comes to you to tell you that you have the strength, and you have

:25:27.:25:33.

a God that will help you, whatever circumstances you are going through.

:25:34.:25:37.

Let's respond to that great testimony by singing Christ Is

:25:38.:25:52.

Enough. mum and businesswoman who also

:25:53.:30:49.

happens to be a marriage mentor and coach. Let's hear how Kerrie makes

:30:50.:30:55.

Jesus real in her very busy life and also how she lives for him in this

:30:56.:31:00.

modern city with every difficulty that it throws up. Please take your

:31:01.:31:07.

seats. I am Kerrie. I have always had a

:31:08.:31:12.

strong faith. I used to love Sunday school when I was young. I love my

:31:13.:31:18.

life. It revolves around church, work and family. It sounds boring

:31:19.:31:22.

that I find it really fulfilling. As I have got older, I have learned and

:31:23.:31:27.

accepted that God has a plan in everything, in the whole of my life.

:31:28.:31:33.

I was blessed with a husband. I have had a child. I think my life is

:31:34.:31:39.

close to perfect, so that cannot have been chance. As a family, we

:31:40.:31:50.

have also had ups and downs. In 2012, I had to leave work, partially

:31:51.:32:00.

ill health. Most of it was just stress. Just shortly after that, my

:32:01.:32:07.

husband was also out of work. So we were both unemployed. We had never

:32:08.:32:11.

experienced that before. But we still had the mortgage to pay and

:32:12.:32:16.

all the bills to pay. Money was short. We ran into a lot of debts,

:32:17.:32:21.

including the mortgage company threatening to take the house from

:32:22.:32:25.

us. I think that is probably the lowest time for us. As a Christian,

:32:26.:32:30.

I believe we are given different gifts and for me, one is faith.

:32:31.:32:36.

Especially, when it comes to money, I never worry, because somehow, God

:32:37.:32:42.

always comes through for me, all the time, especially in the area of

:32:43.:32:46.

money. The natural thing for me was to do what I have always wanted to

:32:47.:32:51.

do which is to work with children. And then I thought, why don't I

:32:52.:32:55.

actually do this on my own? So I set up a nursery. It is absolutely

:32:56.:33:06.

amazing. In a year, we are now at our maximum in terms of children

:33:07.:33:11.

that we can take in. Business has been really good. Again, I only have

:33:12.:33:20.

God to thank for that. I feel like I am now doing what I was always

:33:21.:33:23.

supposed to be doing, working with children. Pentecost for me is about

:33:24.:33:33.

hope. But then we also think about Jesus and Easter. And him dying and

:33:34.:33:40.

the resurrection and all the things that happen within that time, before

:33:41.:33:49.

Pentecost. And I suppose that is why I say hope, because actually, there

:33:50.:33:53.

is a light at the end of the tunnel. Jesus had to go through all of that

:33:54.:33:58.

but then the church was born and now we have 2000 years later, Christians

:33:59.:34:02.

all over the world. We are all recognising what he did for us and

:34:03.:34:06.

being happy about that. And that inspires me, that directs my life

:34:07.:34:08.

really. # You picked me up,

:34:09.:34:30.

turned me around # The slate is clean,

:34:31.:34:37.

a brand-new day We are having a great day, aren't

:34:38.:39:01.

we? Let's take our seats. I want to do a bit of thinking about the day

:39:02.:39:05.

of Pentecost itself and the purpose behind it for us as Christians and

:39:06.:39:10.

everybody in the world. Actually, I want to take you back about seven

:39:11.:39:15.

weeks before the day of Pentecost and Jesus gathers together his

:39:16.:39:21.

disciples in an upper room, just before his death. It is a vulnerable

:39:22.:39:25.

moment and he is about to leave them and he is about to go and die on the

:39:26.:39:31.

cross. And then he speaks these words to them about the Holy Spirit

:39:32.:39:37.

coming. You can find it in John's gospel, chapter 14. He says this,

:39:38.:39:42.

and I will ask the father and he will give you another advocate to

:39:43.:39:47.

help you and be with you forever. The Spirit of truth. Now, the world

:39:48.:39:52.

cannot accept him because neither sees him nor knows him. But you know

:39:53.:39:56.

him because he lives with you forever. And then he says these

:39:57.:40:03.

incredible words in verse 18: I will not leave you as orphans. I will

:40:04.:40:10.

come to you and you were in me and I am in you.

:40:11.:40:18.

In 1999, there was a film called The Cider House Rules. Michael Caine

:40:19.:40:21.

starred in it. In that film, he played the Doctor of an orphanage.

:40:22.:40:25.

Every night he would put the children to bed with this grand

:40:26.:40:33.

pronouncement over their lives. He would say, good night you Princes of

:40:34.:40:37.

Maine, you kings of New England. What he was trying to communicate to

:40:38.:40:41.

them was of value even though they were orphans. It is true today that

:40:42.:40:48.

no matter what our background or our current status, like the attitude

:40:49.:40:52.

that Michael Caine had to always communicate value, God also

:40:53.:41:00.

communicates his intentions to us as being valuable, to help us and to

:41:01.:41:06.

bless us. It might be true in our city that some people might not feel

:41:07.:41:11.

that they are orphans or actually be orphans, but what is coming out

:41:12.:41:16.

sometimes is that people have what could be called an orphan mindset or

:41:17.:41:24.

the mentality of an orphan. Somehow they feel that they are outside in

:41:25.:41:28.

life, that they are missing out, they have something missing. One of

:41:29.:41:32.

the best things about the Holy Spirit coming to us as Christians

:41:33.:41:37.

and on Pentecost, is that he heals our inner self, so that we can live

:41:38.:41:42.

out who we were really meant to be. I don't know about you, but my

:41:43.:41:49.

daughter has becoming a proficient baker but she has often practised on

:41:50.:41:54.

me. One of the famous occasions of this practice was when she thought

:41:55.:41:59.

it was really cool to bake apple pies but the pastry Carla had to

:42:00.:42:07.

match the colour of the Apples. That night, it was a really interesting

:42:08.:42:11.

tea-time! I think children should really come with a bit of a health

:42:12.:42:15.

warning, particularly when they are learning to drive, when they are

:42:16.:42:19.

older, don't you? But we listen to them and we put our best efforts in.

:42:20.:42:22.

But even with the best efforts of parents, when we become adults on

:42:23.:42:33.

our own, what we find is often, this kind of orphan mentality creeps into

:42:34.:42:36.

any of us. And it is probably because of our competitive and harsh

:42:37.:42:41.

world that we live in. We sometimes find ourselves questioning our own

:42:42.:42:44.

acceptance or overly comparing ourselves with others. It happens to

:42:45.:42:50.

all people, parents or not. We feel this sense of being not anchored and

:42:51.:42:58.

drifting. It is strange how our nation can feel orphaned and

:42:59.:43:02.

fatherless at times. But it is to this feeling that Jesus fits right

:43:03.:43:08.

into our contemporary dilemma when he says, I personally will send you

:43:09.:43:13.

a helper from the father to be with you forever, the Holy Spirit. You

:43:14.:43:17.

are not going to be left alone, Jesus plainly understands one of our

:43:18.:43:22.

deepest needs in this phrase when he says, I will not leave you as

:43:23.:43:28.

orphans. There might be some who think they do not need that sort of

:43:29.:43:32.

promise and these people kind of reminds me, do you remember those

:43:33.:43:35.

old variety shows where there was always an act where there were lots

:43:36.:43:41.

of plates spinning, usually while juggling as well. It is amazing how

:43:42.:43:47.

many plates one capable human can spin. You know what, it is also

:43:48.:43:55.

amazing how much life can catch us out when our performance strop is.

:43:56.:43:59.

Performance can be such a cruel master when it has to be maintained

:44:00.:44:06.

for value. On May the 6th 1954, Great Britain's Roger Bannister ran

:44:07.:44:13.

the first sub four-minute mile, finishing in three minutes 59

:44:14.:44:17.

seconds. It was a fantastic achievement. But even such an

:44:18.:44:21.

achievement like this has long since been surpassed. If your value only

:44:22.:44:27.

comes from your abilities or your notable achievements, eventually

:44:28.:44:33.

something will crash. The offer that Jesus puts on the table is this,

:44:34.:44:38.

that no matter how you are doing, good performance or crash, I will

:44:39.:44:44.

come to you, I will be with you. Another legend of athletics from

:44:45.:44:50.

Chariots Of Fire fame, Eric Adel said, circumstances may wreck our

:44:51.:44:54.

lives but God is not helpless amongst the ruins -- Eric Lindahl.

Another aspect of Pentecost is as well as this personal companionship

:45:00.:45:05.

we have, the Holy Spirit offers offers Christians the strength to do

:45:06.:45:08.

amazing things. Our church family here is the Elim Pentecostal Church

:45:09.:45:15.

and next year, we will celebrate our 100th anniversary. But did you know

:45:16.:45:21.

that in 1915, when the church began, a band of young people decided that

:45:22.:45:26.

even in the depths of the darkness of the First World War, they could

:45:27.:45:31.

call on God for strength and his anointing of the Holy Spirit and

:45:32.:45:35.

offer hope and they received power and strength and they helped

:45:36.:45:40.

literally thousands of people, even in those dark times. We need to

:45:41.:45:49.

remember we can do amazing things, but we have to trust on the

:45:50.:45:52.

strengthening power of the Holy Spirit, that is what Pentecost is

:45:53.:45:57.

all about. Churches all over Britain are doing amazing things. Our own

:45:58.:46:01.

church regularly feeds many of the disadvantaged in our city through

:46:02.:46:07.

our food bank. But we can't do it from our own strength. We have to

:46:08.:46:12.

remember that Christianity is not only a faith of action and activity,

:46:13.:46:18.

but one of trust and receiving. So I want you to receive today and here

:46:19.:46:23.

that the Holy Spirit wants to direct you in your efforts, giving you

:46:24.:46:29.

strength. The day of Pentecost is about receiving personal,

:46:30.:46:37.

supernatural help. This personal side of Christianity is its key

:46:38.:46:42.

distinctiveness, Christianity offers this personal relationship. Much

:46:43.:46:47.

more with God than just religious groups to jump through or practices

:46:48.:46:52.

to achieve. And we get this personal relationship by first seeing what

:46:53.:46:58.

God has done for us. Jesus died on a cross for us to offer payment for

:46:59.:47:02.

our lives. In every way we fall short of what is good and right,

:47:03.:47:06.

Jesus pays for that by his death on the cross, amen? Amen. We get a

:47:07.:47:15.

personal relationship by asking him to come into our lives, personally

:47:16.:47:19.

admitting that we have not lived as we ought to and we must ask for

:47:20.:47:24.

forgiveness so he can change us. And as Christians today, we can develop

:47:25.:47:30.

this personal relationship with God by simply accepting the status that

:47:31.:47:35.

is even as as his true sons and daughters. No matter what your image

:47:36.:47:45.

of Father is, let's comeback to a loving father God who says, you are

:47:46.:47:50.

not a slave, you are no longer an orphan, but you are a son and

:47:51.:47:56.

daughter. Let me invite you to hear what the Bible says. It says, to us

:47:57.:48:01.

as Christians, so you have not received a spirit that makes you

:48:02.:48:05.

fearful slave is, but instead you have received Haiti's spirit when he

:48:06.:48:12.

adopted you as his own children, and now we call him Father. His spirit

:48:13.:48:20.

joins with hours to affirm that we are God's children. Would you please

:48:21.:48:25.

stand with me for a few moments? We are going to pray in a moment, and I

:48:26.:48:30.

am going to invite my wife to come, and the choir to come as we pray.

:48:31.:48:35.

But I want to leave you with this - you are not meant to be a slave

:48:36.:48:42.

ought to have an orphan mindset, but on this day of Pentecost, we can

:48:43.:48:47.

live as loved sons and daughters of God. Shall we pray together?

:48:48.:48:51.

Father, we thank you, we are your loved children,

:48:52.:48:57.

and we pray now for all those who have been taken

:48:58.:49:00.

We ask that you would help people who have moved to Birmingham from

:49:01.:49:10.

other countries and left behind their homes and families. Amen. We

:49:11.:49:24.

pray today for our spiritual condition, may each one of us come

:49:25.:49:29.

home to you, and let's invite you and ask your love and healing to

:49:30.:49:33.

fill us, and we ask for your power today in Jesus' name, amen. Thank

:49:34.:49:42.

you for being here today, such a privilege to be with you. Let's sing

:49:43.:49:46.

to the person who makes us the true sons and daughters we can be, our

:49:47.:49:49.

cornerstone. Let's sing together! # Than Jesus' blood

:49:50.:50:03.

and righteousness # I dare not trust

:50:04.:50:16.

the sweetest frame # Weak made strong,

:50:17.:50:22.

in the Saviour's love # When darkness seems

:50:23.:50:44.

to hide his face # Weak made strong,

:50:45.:51:06.

in the Saviour's love # Weak made strong,

:51:07.:51:48.

in the Saviour's love # When he shall come

:51:49.:52:15.

with trumpet sound # Dressed

:52:16.:52:44.

in his righteousness alone # Weak made strong,

:52:45.:52:57.

in the Saviour's love # Weak made strong,

:52:58.:53:26.

in the Saviour's love Hallelujah! We will continue our

:53:27.:53:53.

praise with this song. Magnificent. The power base

:53:54.:54:48.

of medieval England.
