Good morning you on the final day of the European Athletics Championship | :00:44. | :00:53.
and the news is the sup is shining. -- sun is shining. Some things are | :00:54. | :00:58.
familiar, the British Athletics team is still on fire. It is Britain and | :00:59. | :01:07.
Russia, just one more change. Hold your breath. That is not a bad | :01:08. | :01:17.
start. Britain and their changeover is good to Talbot. That is pretty | :01:18. | :01:22.
swift. It will be about who gets it right on the day. Lindsey Sharpe | :01:23. | :01:36.
kicks again. Sharpe the silver. We are across the line. That is a good | :01:37. | :01:43.
performance from that quartet. Jo Pavey struggling. Her race is run in | :01:44. | :01:54.
terms of a medal. Eilidh Child running strongly. Child leads on the | :01:55. | :02:00.
final barrier and the final run. Eilidh Child's gold. Another great | :02:01. | :02:07.
night here. More medals for Britain and Scotland. Brendan and Paula are | :02:08. | :02:13.
here. A great performance from Eilidh? Yes, she went to the | :02:14. | :02:19.
Commonwealth Games and she had an outstanding Jamaican athlete and she | :02:20. | :02:25.
knew she couldn't beat her. She gathered herself, came here, | :02:26. | :02:30.
executed her race brilliantly. She did everything she was expected to | :02:31. | :02:36.
go and Colin Jackson who coaches her, was telling me she did what her | :02:37. | :02:42.
coach said she would do. And you can't do any more and European | :02:43. | :02:49.
champion is brilliant. Some people said she had more pressure at the | :02:50. | :02:53.
Commonwealth Games, but coming here with the expectation to win was a | :02:54. | :02:58.
greater pressure? Yes, she has shown she can cope with both pressures, | :02:59. | :03:03.
the external pressure of being the poster girl she was in Glasgow, with | :03:04. | :03:09.
all the weight of Scotland on her shoulders. But to come here leading | :03:10. | :03:14.
the rankings by a small margin and the favourite and she had that | :03:15. | :03:18.
pressure from herself. She knew she should win and she wanted to win. | :03:19. | :03:27.
She executed it to perfection. It was to perfection. It is a 400 | :03:28. | :03:35.
metres race and she won at 4 hundred metres, they were coming fast down | :03:36. | :03:42.
the home straight. Yes they had misjudged the race slightly. When | :03:43. | :03:46.
she crossed the line, it was obvious she had won, I don't know what she | :03:47. | :03:50.
was looking for. You have clearly won. But she was like, I don't know | :03:51. | :03:55.
if I have won. She was quite restrained in her celebration. Thab | :03:56. | :04:01.
Maybe, I am sure she did sense how fast they were closing her down and | :04:02. | :04:06.
she wanted that confirmation. It is embarrassing if you celebrate and | :04:07. | :04:11.
then you haven't won. So she wanted that confirmation. A gutsy run in | :04:12. | :04:19.
the 800 metres. I was with coin Jackson when -- Colin Jackson went | :04:20. | :04:27.
through, and when Lindsey went through we thought Ste had gone too | :04:28. | :04:33.
quickly. She has been displaying a different way of racing. She has a | :04:34. | :04:47.
fast kick over the last 150. She was really hurting at the end. A quick | :04:48. | :04:52.
look over her shoulder to make sure she was safe in silver. She is just | :04:53. | :05:00.
trying to hang on to silver. And after she realised that she has run | :05:01. | :05:06.
a big personal best. You can't ask any more than to come and run a | :05:07. | :05:12.
personal best. A quick word on Jo Pavey and that 5,000. The 10,000 was | :05:13. | :05:19.
fantastic. Physically and emotionally and she was clearly | :05:20. | :05:24.
tired from the 10,000 still. She was lucky there were not heats, she | :05:25. | :05:30.
would have found it hard. But I am sure it must have gone through her | :05:31. | :05:37.
mind, maybe I don't need to run the 5,000. What she has done this week, | :05:38. | :05:42.
let's forget the 5,000, she has restored some real faith in long | :05:43. | :05:47.
distance running and she has inspired thousands of people, | :05:48. | :05:50.
thousands of women in particular, to run over the edge of 40 to run | :05:51. | :05:55.
10,000 metres. The reason we are here is for the men's maratho. First | :05:56. | :06:04.
let's look at the women's marathon yesterday. Setting off in cool | :06:05. | :06:10.
conditions. This is a tough course. That lead group is being closed | :06:11. | :06:18.
down. This hill is brutal. They're working hard. Look how steep it is, | :06:19. | :06:26.
Steve. I think this is a push. She may well be heading for a personal | :06:27. | :06:34.
best. The French record holder. She can see the finish line. Dornay | :06:35. | :06:44.
wins. A great performance by the French athlete and one of the | :06:45. | :06:51.
talking points was the course and Paula risked life and limb to bring | :06:52. | :07:01.
us this guide to the course. Here we are at the start and finish area. Of | :07:02. | :07:05.
course the most important thing for the athletes is they come in well | :07:06. | :07:09.
prepared physically, but also mentally. So they have have taken | :07:10. | :07:13.
the chance to look at the course profile, which shows the inclines | :07:14. | :07:18.
and declines and the general layout. This is a loop course. So they will | :07:19. | :07:25.
run a two kilometre loop and then four laps of 10 kilometres each. | :07:26. | :07:30.
Generally we talk about marathon runners following the blue line. | :07:31. | :07:35.
Here it is a purple line. But it is the same thing. It just follows the | :07:36. | :07:39.
shortest line of the course and takes the best tan Ghentest gents. | :07:40. | :07:45.
-- tangents. But I don't think we will see many runners running this | :07:46. | :07:50.
close to the gutter. This section will be testing, because of the | :07:51. | :07:53.
cobbles. As we have seen the weather can change suddenly and if it does | :07:54. | :07:57.
rain, then this area will become more testing and a bit more | :07:58. | :08:04.
slippery. As well as the cobbles, another hazard are the tram lines | :08:05. | :08:10.
they we have to run along. We have been told they may fill the tram | :08:11. | :08:16.
lines with a banana leaf substance just to fill the holes and lessen | :08:17. | :08:22.
the danger of slipping. This is the toughest climb of the course and the | :08:23. | :08:29.
runners will need to not guilty this four times. Climbing up the hill to | :08:30. | :08:33.
the highest point by the university. The hilly nature of the course will | :08:34. | :08:38.
suit the tougher athletes. We have been given information that the | :08:39. | :08:44.
Swiss may have designed the course to suit their champion. The hills | :08:45. | :08:51.
and climbs only make it tougher for the athletes as they go up the hill, | :08:52. | :08:58.
but they have to come down and that means a lot of pressure on the thigh | :08:59. | :09:04.
muscles. By the third or fout time up the hill it will be starting to | :09:05. | :09:09.
hurt. So we could see an attack being made up this hill. This is | :09:10. | :09:15.
where the runners enter the area by the lake and through the Chinese | :09:16. | :09:20.
gardens. Before they make the turn, they have have taken a drink | :09:21. | :09:24.
station. That will be the 10kph teshgs #20shgs kilometre and 30 and | :09:25. | :09:30.
40 kilometre drink station. So they will have to take a drink and then | :09:31. | :09:36.
turn into this narrow area. It is a small field and by the time they get | :09:37. | :09:42.
to 10 kilometres, the field will have finned out. But we could see | :09:43. | :09:46.
some elbowing and jostling for position here. This is the Chinese | :09:47. | :09:51.
Garden area. There are a couple of points just here and further on | :09:52. | :09:55.
where they have to cut across the grass. As long as it is not wet, | :09:56. | :09:59.
that shouldn't be a problem. This is a tough course, but I think it is a | :10:00. | :10:04.
beautiful course. The fact there are different area with the hills and | :10:05. | :10:11.
climbs and this garden means it breaks it up for the runners and | :10:12. | :10:16.
make it an enjoyable course too. If I can't get the chance to go around | :10:17. | :10:21.
the whole course, one thing is to be able to jog over the last 600 metres | :10:22. | :10:27.
to make sure I know it well. Should it come down to a close finish, I | :10:28. | :10:33.
want to be able to time my effort to perfection and know every last bump | :10:34. | :10:38.
in the last couple of hundred metres. This course could be | :10:39. | :10:43.
interesting, because they will drop down the hill and see the finish | :10:44. | :10:47.
late on. They will know it, but it makes sense to know they will be | :10:48. | :10:51.
coming down the hill, over the brow of the bridge and it will be a short | :10:52. | :10:55.
run into the finish and make sure they time that perfectly. A course | :10:56. | :11:01.
with a bit of everything, Brendan. Did you run all the way round? No, | :11:02. | :11:09.
we had to keep stopping and filming. That is the wonder of TV. It was too | :11:10. | :11:18.
busy. You got that bus. Are you a fan of that course? I think it is | :11:19. | :11:23.
fantastic. The I have never seen a course where from the lowest point | :11:24. | :11:29.
rung along the river to the highest point you can alterm live get there | :11:30. | :11:34.
by going up in a railway. Never been seen bmplt it is brilliant. Are | :11:35. | :11:40.
there rules about the amount of climbing and that terrain you go | :11:41. | :11:45.
over. It didn't climb that much. As demonstrated by the fact they did | :11:46. | :11:51.
run fast and they ran a Championship record. The climb per lap was 44 | :11:52. | :11:57.
metres so they climbed 176 metres over the course of the marathon | :11:58. | :12:03.
distance. New York climbs 224. It is not as hilly as New York. But it is | :12:04. | :12:08.
shorter and steeper climbs, which take a toll. The bigger factor was | :12:09. | :12:14.
the down hill. As we saw with the Turkish runner she hammered too hard | :12:15. | :12:20.
down the hill and paid the price. A course set for a Swiss victory? Set | :12:21. | :12:29.
by him for his own victory. He designed the course. He is a | :12:30. | :12:35.
fantastic mountain runner the Zurich marathon is a flat course around the | :12:36. | :12:39.
lake. He has decided he wants it a bit around the lake and four | :12:40. | :12:44.
mountainous climbing, oom Paula thinks they're not much of a climb. | :12:45. | :12:51.
Steve Cram is in the commentary box. Are you a fan of this course? Yes, I | :12:52. | :12:57.
because I don't have to run it! I think obviously Championship racing | :12:58. | :13:02.
is difficult to the big city mar Thors, where they - marathons where | :13:03. | :13:07.
they want the fast times. Yes, I don't know. I think if you put a | :13:08. | :13:13.
course out there - excuse me, Sunday morning. It has got to be fair for | :13:14. | :13:18.
everybody. And it shouldn't always be a course that is designed just to | :13:19. | :13:24.
produce a fairly boring race. Having features in there I think | :13:25. | :13:27.
Championship races are about showing off the city, showing off where we | :13:28. | :13:34.
are, we are in Zurich, but I just thought yesterday, Paula made a good | :13:35. | :13:38.
point, the good athletes f you look at the result of the race yesterday, | :13:39. | :13:41.
even without the hill, I think we would have had a similar result. I | :13:42. | :13:45.
am not sure it had an effect on the overall result. But that could be | :13:46. | :13:50.
different. It is a very open race. I'm going to send Brendan and paw | :13:51. | :13:58.
law down to -- Paula down to see you and not a bad start for Sunderland. | :13:59. | :14:08.
Yes 2-2 away from home. Not bad. OK Steve it's all yours. STEVE CRAM: If | :14:09. | :14:20.
you won't here yesterday I will explain how the course is set out. | :14:21. | :14:27.
They're at the entrance of the lake and big crowds ended up watching the | :14:28. | :14:33.
race yesterday after one or two spots of rain early on. But it dried | :14:34. | :14:37.
up and the crowds came out this morning. There are more people there | :14:38. | :14:42.
from the start. That is great to see. So Switzerland, fingers crossed | :14:43. | :14:48.
are hoping they have some good chances. As I was saying, it is such | :14:49. | :15:04.
an open race. But Hill might suit some, may be for others, it will be | :15:05. | :15:06.
a race breaker -- backheel. So away they go, with a reasonable | :15:07. | :15:21.
field, a pretty big field, to be honest. And they set off on what is | :15:22. | :15:26.
a short lap, a two kilometre loop, and then they will have four big | :15:27. | :15:33.
laps of ten kilometres to negotiate. And the temperature is going to rise | :15:34. | :15:37.
today, that may be as much of a packed as the hill we have been | :15:38. | :15:41.
talking about, because it will get warmer, it is already 17 degrees and | :15:42. | :15:47.
once it gets up to 20 degrees, which I'm sure it will do by the end this | :15:48. | :15:52.
race, humidity sitting at about 65%, which is reasonably high as | :15:53. | :15:57.
well and if you have ever heard Brendan and I talking about | :15:58. | :16:01.
marathons, big-city marathons or championship marathons, when she get | :16:02. | :16:04.
a combination of warm weather and a bit of humidity, that is not to the | :16:05. | :16:10.
liking of the marathon runners -- once you get. There is a team | :16:11. | :16:17.
competition as well, and the medals do appear on the medal table, so | :16:18. | :16:23.
Switzerland have got a pretty good team and the likes of Poland, Russia | :16:24. | :16:30.
and one or two others might just fancy their chances of getting on | :16:31. | :16:36.
the rostrum. A couple of the Polish athletes to the four already, there | :16:37. | :16:40.
is Viktor Rothlin with the gold number. The Swiss have a couple of | :16:41. | :16:50.
different sets of strips. Messner is a familiar figure on the road | :16:51. | :16:56.
surfaces -- Meftah. They will come back down to the | :16:57. | :17:16.
start/finish line and that is the two kilometre lap finished. We will | :17:17. | :17:21.
let them settle down before we mentioned too many contenders. | :17:22. | :17:27.
Switzerland also have Tadesse Abraham. There is a big marathon | :17:28. | :17:33.
held in Zurich every year, one of the better in Europe, and Tadesse | :17:34. | :17:38.
Abraham broke the course record, set by Viktor Rothlin, last year. Not on | :17:39. | :17:48.
this course, of course, it is a mass participation event and this course | :17:49. | :17:52.
would not be suitable. The Swiss have high hopes and already the | :17:53. | :17:57.
cowbells are ringing. It is Sunday morning and many European cities | :17:58. | :18:07.
have heard the church bells ringing as the guys were talking, through | :18:08. | :18:13.
nine o'clock. I am pleased to say that Brendan and Paula have safely | :18:14. | :18:15.
nine o'clock. I am pleased to say that Brendan and Paula managed to | :18:16. | :18:16.
abseil their way down to the commentary box. I can go and find a | :18:17. | :18:27.
lozenge. That visual cue, guys, one of you talk! -- that is your cue. | :18:28. | :18:36.
PAULA RADCLIFFE: Surrey! We have come down here on a much | :18:37. | :18:42.
better date for running in a marathon. Yesterday, it was cool but | :18:43. | :18:49.
humid. Today, it is a beautiful, sunny day, but it is not hot, so | :18:50. | :18:54.
they won't be complaining about temperatures, so it will show off | :18:55. | :18:58.
this course and besides of zero to perfection. | :18:59. | :19:03.
BRENDAN FOSTER: And you can see the national hero that Viktor Rothlin | :19:04. | :19:06.
is, he was sports personality of the year when he won the marathon | :19:07. | :19:12.
championship, and the crowds have come out to support him today. | :19:13. | :19:17.
A beautiful day. Taking and not too bad for running. Maybe it'll get and | :19:18. | :19:23.
eventually, the course and the hill will take its toll on this event and | :19:24. | :19:27.
significantly affected the overall performance. But there they go, down | :19:28. | :19:40.
towards the river. As we look overhead, that is where all the | :19:41. | :19:43.
major Swiss banks have their headquarters. This is a very | :19:44. | :19:49.
expensive part of town, a very expensive part of a very expensive | :19:50. | :19:50.
town. You saw in Paula's film, this is a | :19:51. | :20:04.
little cobbled area, a little rise, and this time, for the only time, | :20:05. | :20:08.
when they get over the bridge, they will take a right-hand turn. We will | :20:09. | :20:13.
bring you all the sights and sounds of over the next couple of hours -- | :20:14. | :20:21.
of Zurich. It may entice you to come and visit one of Europe's wealthiest | :20:22. | :20:26.
cities. You take a right turn there and then you come back to the start | :20:27. | :20:30.
area. Next time, they will take a left turn and continue on a bigger | :20:31. | :20:36.
lap, to take in the hill the guys were talking about. We are so | :20:37. | :20:40.
disappointed that the rope is not being used on the tramlines, we did | :20:41. | :20:47.
a lot of homework on that. I am glad they are not displaying favouritism | :20:48. | :20:50.
and putting it down to the men when they did not for the girls | :20:51. | :20:53.
yesterday. It is fairly easy to run in between them and they are | :20:54. | :20:58.
probably used to negotiating things like that. The World Championship | :20:59. | :21:02.
course in Helsinki in 2005, we had to cross a number of tramlines. That | :21:03. | :21:12.
is Grossmunster. Yesterday, I started to tell the story of Felix | :21:13. | :21:24.
and Regulah, they are the patron saint of Zurich and religious | :21:25. | :21:29.
persecution is back in whichever century it was, along, long time | :21:30. | :21:36.
ago, created the legend of the three saints who were beheaded and walked | :21:37. | :21:41.
up the hill with their heads tucked under their arms, as the legend | :21:42. | :21:47.
goes, and that became a site, Grossmunster, and there has been a | :21:48. | :21:52.
church there, a cathedral, since a roundabout 1100. You didn't believe | :21:53. | :21:59.
me yesterday. We didn't, but then we thought, the hill can't be that bad | :22:00. | :22:03.
if they can walk a bit with their heads under their arms. I think this | :22:04. | :22:11.
a legend. -- it is. Paula and I have a bit of a disagreement. The hill, | :22:12. | :22:18.
which she thinks is easy and I think is brutal, has a funicular railway | :22:19. | :22:23.
that runs up to the top of it. That is the definition of a hard hill, | :22:24. | :22:28.
with a railway. I didn't say it was easy, I just said we don't always | :22:29. | :22:34.
want to run-on pancake flat courses and it puts a bit of interest in and | :22:35. | :22:48.
it may suit other people, which are flat course may not. So you are | :22:49. | :22:54.
saying you do not like flat courses? I actually do like hills, | :22:55. | :23:01.
yes. Well, it wouldn't be Switzerland, would it, if we didn't | :23:02. | :23:06.
have a hill in it? We were talking last night about living in Zurich, | :23:07. | :23:10.
Tina Turner lives in Zurich and I said, " Of course she does, she sang | :23:11. | :23:25.
River Deep, Mountain High. " you are in good form as well last night, | :23:26. | :23:31.
then, will you? Do you think she is watching? I don't know, she might | :23:32. | :23:41.
be. She might be on the entertainment stand, it is either up | :23:42. | :23:45.
by the University or in the park, in the Chinese gardens. We went to be | :23:46. | :23:56.
invited, will we? -- and we won't be invited. As I said, we will try and | :23:57. | :24:00.
give you some local interests, if you stick with us through this | :24:01. | :24:06.
Sunday morning. There are a lot more people on the streets this morning, | :24:07. | :24:10.
we can hear the cowbells ringing. Yesterday, it was a bit like being | :24:11. | :24:18.
on the piste, all of the noise when the athletes came by. There is | :24:19. | :24:23.
Abraham, wearing sunglasses, to the right of Pertile. A lot of white | :24:24. | :24:33.
vests, and why not, in the sunshine? Abraham was going to defend his | :24:34. | :24:39.
title in Zurich this year. He has won the Zurich marathon on two | :24:40. | :24:42.
occasions, he has lived in Switzerland for ten years but has | :24:43. | :24:46.
only recently been cleared to run full Switzerland. He actually trains | :24:47. | :24:52.
with Viktor Rothlin, so they know each other, and he may well have | :24:53. | :24:57.
been involved in, well, not the design of the cause but he would | :24:58. | :25:00.
have been aware of the decisions being made. The Swiss could win a | :25:01. | :25:07.
medal here. They have two good runners and others to back them up. | :25:08. | :25:10.
They had targeted, if not an individual medal, the team medal. | :25:11. | :25:18.
Just to remind you, the first three for your country that crossed the | :25:19. | :25:21.
line at their times, it is the cumulative time of the three people | :25:22. | :25:28.
but decides the medals. I think the other thing we should mention is not | :25:29. | :25:32.
only has Rothlin had a hand in designing this course, because he is | :25:33. | :25:38.
the defending champion from Barcelona in 2010, but he has also | :25:39. | :25:42.
declared this is his farewell race, so he is maybe trying to go out on a | :25:43. | :25:50.
high in his home city. So that little turn they made their... An | :25:51. | :25:56.
early withdrawal, Sokolov, who is not a bad run at all, but obviously | :25:57. | :26:02.
injured. He had strapping there anyway, so probably just decided to | :26:03. | :26:07.
give it ago it didn't work. Looks like a hamstring injury, not the | :26:08. | :26:14.
type of injury marathon murders usually suffer from. One or two -- | :26:15. | :26:19.
marathon runners. One too Familia runners, Meucci and Mostafa | :26:20. | :26:27.
Mohammad, you may remember him from his steeplechase exploits. Meucci | :26:28. | :26:35.
ran the European 10,000m, he was six behind Mo Farah and Andy Vernon the | :26:36. | :26:41.
other night and he has chosen to run the marathon for the second event of | :26:42. | :26:44.
his championships, the two British men will be running the 5,000m this | :26:45. | :26:49.
afternoon in the stadium. A big group together as they head back | :26:50. | :26:56.
towards the city. The early miles, the early kilometres just getting | :26:57. | :27:05.
them down, getting them behind you what a glorious view, looking over | :27:06. | :27:11.
the city of Zurich, on a day like today. You can see why it is often | :27:12. | :27:15.
voted as the best place, one of the best places in the world to live. | :27:16. | :27:20.
The quality of life here, winter and summer, is envied by a lot of people | :27:21. | :27:25.
around the world. And they have turned out in great numbers to watch | :27:26. | :27:30.
this one, supporting their national figure, Viktor Rothlin, because they | :27:31. | :27:36.
don't have too many international sports stars. Obviously, Roger | :27:37. | :27:40.
Federer is the biggest runner of them all. The other swish athlete, | :27:41. | :27:47.
Adrian Lehmann, settling down behind the group -- Swiss athlete. Getting | :27:48. | :27:52.
the early miles away. It is a big group at the front, that is how you | :27:53. | :27:57.
would expect it. There is no clear favourite, lots of athletes who have | :27:58. | :28:01.
claims to be competitive in this race, as they process along the quai | :28:02. | :28:17.
named after famous general, responsible for the defensive | :28:18. | :28:20.
strategy in the war, when he put plans together to prevent Nazi | :28:21. | :28:27.
invasion of Switzerland. This part of the core swings away from the | :28:28. | :28:35.
lake, and we go up Steve's favourite Street, or the expensive | :28:36. | :28:42.
restaurants, coffee shops, where you can spend your money. -- Orlov. | :28:43. | :29:07.
Well, I could. The bellhop they do cater for my tastes. I did tell the | :29:08. | :29:17.
story yesterday about the Oprah Winfrey incident, which is | :29:18. | :29:22.
apparently very famous, that she was turned down and after we had been | :29:23. | :29:25.
chatting about that, apparently she is not the only famous person who | :29:26. | :29:35.
apparently has been refused - not refuse, but politely told you can't | :29:36. | :29:40.
afford this. Brendan, would they not serve you? I didn't need a handbag, | :29:41. | :29:53.
not like Steve. They will take a right turn here. This course, which | :29:54. | :30:07.
we keep talking about, I think yesterday it was funnily enough that | :30:08. | :30:12.
hill is a factor and this time when they cross the bridge, we will see | :30:13. | :30:18.
the bridge and Brendan's funny peculiar. It is also the fwisy, | :30:19. | :30:24.
Turney nape of the -- fwisy Turney nature of the course. There is an | :30:25. | :30:38.
art to how you run this. Some people run down hills better than others | :30:39. | :30:43.
and some run uphills better. I was speaking to some of the French | :30:44. | :30:55.
commentary teams and asked if Christine Dornau, the was using a | :30:56. | :31:01.
tactic. They said yes. She was pushing up and creating a gap and | :31:02. | :31:05.
she did run well and showed the climb is very tough, but it doesn't | :31:06. | :31:13.
necessarily mean a slower time. The men through the first kilometres in | :31:14. | :31:19.
15. 46. Differently different to that of the women. That is a big | :31:20. | :31:26.
group still together. You won't see any British athletes in there, sadly | :31:27. | :31:35.
no one competing for Britain. Paul Pollock and his Irish team mates are | :31:36. | :31:40.
there. With the Commonwealth Games being such a focus, then nobody | :31:41. | :31:45.
running for Great Britain here. Brendan is pointing out the crane | :31:46. | :31:49.
which I mentioned yesterday. That is the dockyard crane. We thought it | :31:50. | :31:52.
has been left from some shipping heritage, but it is a work of art | :31:53. | :31:58.
believe it or not and it is very controversial here. It is an art | :31:59. | :32:03.
installation and it is not that popular. I think it has been there | :32:04. | :32:08.
for about five years. It came from a German dockyard and brought in here | :32:09. | :32:14.
and I'm not sure, I think it is a good addition to the waterfront. As | :32:15. | :32:22.
they run along the waterfront, great crowds out today, which is wonderful | :32:23. | :32:27.
to see, the encouragement they will gain, the strong presence at the | :32:28. | :32:31.
front of the Polish athletes, the Swiss team running in their white | :32:32. | :32:38.
vests and the Italians similarly. Lalli and Rothlin with the gold part | :32:39. | :32:46.
of his number, telling us that he is the reigning champion. They turn | :32:47. | :32:50.
here and this is where they start to climb, where you can come and watch | :32:51. | :32:54.
the course. There is the railway, which Steve didn't believe me | :32:55. | :32:58.
existed. You can see it in the background coming down the hill. | :32:59. | :33:03.
Which tells me and I'm going to make this point again, this is a hilly | :33:04. | :33:09.
course. I'm glad I'm sitting in the middle of you two. How do you spell | :33:10. | :33:23.
it? Funicular. In the background you can see the track which is much | :33:24. | :33:31.
steeper than the hill that Brendan's funicular takes. The athletes wind | :33:32. | :33:39.
their way up it. It is a initial climb and then it flattens out and | :33:40. | :33:43.
they have a very steep section around the gradient you saw. Oops a | :33:44. | :33:50.
dazy! That was a very considerate throw, making sure she didn't clip | :33:51. | :33:55.
any of the runner. It is a hazard when they take water bottles. Not so | :33:56. | :34:00.
much in a smaller field, but in a big field if you drop the water | :34:01. | :34:06.
bottle then that is a hazard for athletes behind you and can be a | :34:07. | :34:18.
risk of twisting ankles. There is Abraham. There is plenty of guys | :34:19. | :34:29.
have run times which could put them in with a chance here. I was making | :34:30. | :34:34.
the point that the night before when you come to Championships and you're | :34:35. | :34:38.
lying in your bed and wondering what is going to happen, and you're | :34:39. | :34:42.
having a sleepless night and you're thinking, I wonder if I have a | :34:43. | :34:46.
chance tomorrow. I reckon there was a lot of men in this marathon was | :34:47. | :34:50.
thinking that. I think that is right and that is what makes it a race | :34:51. | :34:56.
that will be fascinating. The tick tacks about how fast you go up the | :34:57. | :35:04.
bill. How much you control the down hill run as well. And the rest of | :35:05. | :35:13.
field just staying together. Chabowski just steals a couple of | :35:14. | :35:19.
yards. They will know at the end of this stretch there is a very severe | :35:20. | :35:37.
incline. They move back along the upper section, the same street and | :35:38. | :35:40.
then they will take this right hand turn and you will get an idea of the | :35:41. | :35:47.
gradient. It is slightly uphill and Chabowski just opening up a bit of a | :35:48. | :35:53.
gap. There is Lalli, the former cross country champion from Italy. | :35:54. | :36:00.
And Mohammed, who is already struggling. I wondered how he would | :36:01. | :36:07.
go today. He may have spent last night and this is the real steep | :36:08. | :36:13.
section. This of course first time round won't be so bad. There are one | :36:14. | :36:19.
or two mountain runners, people who have done well over the years and | :36:20. | :36:23.
switched between mountain running and marathon running. As you look at | :36:24. | :36:42.
that. So many white vests, I reckon many of the nations, you can have an | :36:43. | :36:48.
alternative vest. In the stadium, the Swiss have been wearing red, the | :36:49. | :36:54.
French dark blue. And you wouldn't want dark blue on a warm day. So the | :36:55. | :37:01.
French in white today. A lot of team kit suppliers do supply an | :37:02. | :37:05.
alternative marathon vest, which will be a lighter colour, so it | :37:06. | :37:10.
doesn't absorb the heat and a different cut so it is not as long | :37:11. | :37:16.
and it stops kind around where the waistband of your shorts would be, | :37:17. | :37:24.
to allow air to circulate and keep your body cool. They come to this | :37:25. | :37:28.
point, the highest point of the course, the impressive viewpoint | :37:29. | :37:33.
over looking the whole of this wonderful city of Zurich and there | :37:34. | :37:38.
they're going along the level part. This is the highest point of the | :37:39. | :37:47.
course. The crowds gathering. Rothlin giving the Swiss supporters | :37:48. | :37:52.
something to shout about. If you go up here and look across, you can see | :37:53. | :37:57.
the whole of the city of Zurich and the lake, which looks absolutely | :37:58. | :38:03.
wonderful on a day like today. There is Mohammed coming through. He is | :38:04. | :38:08.
off the pace fairly quickly. And there is the Institute of | :38:09. | :38:13.
Technology, a famous technology university here in the middle of | :38:14. | :38:18.
Zurich. Very accomplished students they have had here in the past. | :38:19. | :38:25.
Every where you look here you see industry, commerce, universities. | :38:26. | :38:30.
The whole feel of the city feels very modern. And very impressive in | :38:31. | :38:35.
every sense. The Swiss team getting a cheer as they come through in a | :38:36. | :38:40.
group, as well as the Austrian members in the white vests. The | :38:41. | :38:50.
crowds lining the initial point there. That is the highest point on | :38:51. | :38:54.
the course and now they will start to enter the down hill sections. | :38:55. | :39:00.
Which I think we will see play a big role in the way the race is run | :39:01. | :39:04.
today. You need to really control your effort down hill and relax into | :39:05. | :39:09.
it and just let your body almost flow down the hill, rather than | :39:10. | :39:14.
trying to break with each stride. Because that puts loading on the | :39:15. | :39:21.
quad muscle and can just mean that that fatigues more. Especially in | :39:22. | :39:26.
the latter parts of course. They're running through the grounds of the | :39:27. | :39:37.
University of Zurich. And this down hill bit, you can see how they're | :39:38. | :39:42.
free-wheeling, running comfortably down the the hill. Eventually again | :39:43. | :39:47.
as Paula was saying, you have got to be careful you don't impact your | :39:48. | :39:56.
quad muscles too much by going too quickly. Viktor Rothlin, you sense | :39:57. | :40:03.
he is here for a competition and ready to do battle. In the inside | :40:04. | :40:17.
with the gold on his number, that is Viktor rovt Lynne. That is -- | :40:18. | :40:22.
Rothlin. That is good for him and good for the crowd. The European | :40:23. | :40:29.
lists are led by Mo Farah's run in London. Second is the Polish runner | :40:30. | :40:36.
in that lead group with Rothlin. I would expect he is thinking he could | :40:37. | :40:47.
figure highly as well. I did mention Paul Pollok of Ireland. I'm not sure | :40:48. | :40:53.
he has started. We were expecting him to start, but I can't see him | :40:54. | :40:57.
having gone through the start, or through the first five kilometres. | :40:58. | :41:02.
He hasn't come down as a withdrawal on the course. Maybe he didn't | :41:03. | :41:07.
start. One or two others we were expecting were initially on the | :41:08. | :41:17.
list. The Spanish runner has had an injury problem. It is a course where | :41:18. | :41:22.
if you have a nickel, it is going to find that out. But I suspect running | :41:23. | :41:30.
26 miles any way would do that. Chabowski maybing his way down the | :41:31. | :41:46.
hill. Really good crowds. Szost, the tall figure from Poland. He was | :41:47. | :41:52.
third in the Warsaw marathon, behind one of the ooeftians. -- Ethiopians. | :41:53. | :42:01.
It was a very good run from Szost and gives him probably one of the | :42:02. | :42:05.
best performances coming into this out of all the people who are here. | :42:06. | :42:12.
Not everyone has won a marathon this year. But the Polish team is very | :42:13. | :42:26.
strong. And they have Shegumo as well. That is where you were on | :42:27. | :42:31.
about, the intertaint area. No, it said on the course the entertainment | :42:32. | :42:35.
area was supposed to be on the highest point. But that is the | :42:36. | :42:40.
Swiss, what do they call it, the Swiss hospitality house they | :42:41. | :42:44.
transferred from the Winter lichs in Sochi. Being very green, they took | :42:45. | :42:49.
it down and rebuilt it here. Cress, it was a big feature in Sochi at the | :42:50. | :42:58.
Olympic Park. We had a touch of deja vu when I passed it the other day. | :42:59. | :43:02.
This part of the lap they head out away from the city centre, down the | :43:03. | :43:07.
side of the lake. And they will run down here for around a mile or so. | :43:08. | :43:15.
Maybe not that far. Maybe 1,200 metres and then turn right into the | :43:16. | :43:23.
park, through the Chinese Garden. Come back and in the direction they | :43:24. | :43:26.
have just gone in through park and rejoin the road and back to | :43:27. | :43:39.
Bellevue. So the very early stages. When they get too the end of this | :43:40. | :43:44.
they had they will go through ten kilometres and start to settle down. | :43:45. | :43:52.
A reasonable pace, but a big group. As we saw in the women's race, as | :43:53. | :43:57.
they went up the hill, that group did string out. Once they come back | :43:58. | :44:03.
on to the flat it closes back up again. Certainly in the early stages | :44:04. | :44:07.
of race. Noif idea what that is on the front of his socks! When I was | :44:08. | :44:13.
little and I sent away for my first football strip, in the 70s when | :44:14. | :44:20.
Leeds wore numbers around your calves, it lasted for one or two | :44:21. | :44:25.
year, but we all had them. We had them in the wolf cubs, in the | :44:26. | :44:31.
scouts, they were like green tassel on your Sox. But that is going back | :44:32. | :44:36.
a year or two. I think it is just tape, or maybe a sponsor that is | :44:37. | :44:40.
different to their team kit and the officials have probably taped it so | :44:41. | :44:47.
it will show. But that will not stay on. It won't be a fashion item | :44:48. | :44:56.
either, it won't catch on - bits of tape on your Sox. It is really | :44:57. | :45:03.
weird. I ud couldn't work out -- I couldn't work out what it was. We | :45:04. | :45:08.
need Colin Jackson here, the fashion consult apt. Maybe icht is -- | :45:09. | :45:13.
consultant, maybe it is a new thing in Zurich. This group just off the | :45:14. | :45:22.
lead group. The Russians have a strong team. They sneaked through | :45:23. | :45:27.
for a medal in the women's competition. That German athlete at | :45:28. | :45:42.
the back he would have thought he had a chance. Mohammed of Sweden has | :45:43. | :45:47.
made the move from steeplechase up to the marathon. But if you see | :45:48. | :45:53.
that, he is not quite comfortable over the marathon distance, he has a | :45:54. | :45:58.
long stride and he seemed to struggle as they climbed that hill. | :45:59. | :46:08.
A great view of the park and the Chinese Garden there. There is an | :46:09. | :46:13.
open air cinema there. We had a walk along there. Tonight if you have | :46:14. | :46:18.
nothing else to do it is showing Pulp Fiction. Just thought I'd let | :46:19. | :46:35.
you know! There is also a Chinese Garden Chinese takeaway. There you | :46:36. | :46:43.
go, that is your night sorted. So the ten kilometre mark, but time is | :46:44. | :46:53.
going through there. -- the times. Still a big group, as you would | :46:54. | :46:57.
expect for that kind of pace, but I have seen plenty of races in | :46:58. | :47:02.
Championships that have gone slower than that. But it is not that quick | :47:03. | :47:08.
either. You were right earlier when you were talking about big-city | :47:09. | :47:12.
marathons and how they all compete for the fastest time, therefore who | :47:13. | :47:17.
has got the fastest course. When you come to a championship, it is a | :47:18. | :47:21.
different entity. These athletes are here to race for a position, they | :47:22. | :47:26.
are here to race for medals, the gold medal. And consequently, the | :47:27. | :47:31.
early part of the marathon, the early pace, there are no prizes for | :47:32. | :47:36.
running a fast time, even though yesterday, Christelle Daunay ran a | :47:37. | :47:40.
personal best time on this difficult course to win the gold medal, but | :47:41. | :47:45.
that was as a result of having a very competitive race. As we look | :47:46. | :47:50.
ahead, we now see Chabowski taking a bit of a longer lead, looking for | :47:51. | :47:56.
his particular drink, handed to him from the team managers at the side. | :47:57. | :48:00.
It looks as though it is working pretty efficiently, as the athletes | :48:01. | :48:05.
queue up, get to the right position, get the drinks on-board. The labels | :48:06. | :48:10.
and the flags are a useful addition. Someone has dropped one before they | :48:11. | :48:13.
had a chance to drink it. I thought it was working well. We were making | :48:14. | :48:19.
the point yesterday that they have their own drinks, Chabowski has his, | :48:20. | :48:24.
but there will be a lot more water taken on board than yesterday. The | :48:25. | :48:28.
temperature is rising all the time. A lovely day in Zurich. Goodness me, | :48:29. | :48:33.
we've waited for it. This was another source of argument, trying | :48:34. | :48:38.
to work out whether this camera shot was from a boat or a helicopter. It | :48:39. | :48:44.
is a really quick boat with a tall massed! A ?5 note says it is a | :48:45. | :48:56.
helicopter. In the hills in the background, you can see the | :48:57. | :48:59.
attraction of this city, it does look very pretty on a day like | :49:00. | :49:04.
today. The leading group, just a few dropping off, getting smaller. The | :49:05. | :49:09.
actual athletes that we were looking at and thinking may have a chance | :49:10. | :49:15.
today... It is starting to look even more like a helicopter to me, or the | :49:16. | :49:24.
boat is rising of the water! -- off the water. Yes, we did have a | :49:25. | :49:30.
chuckle about that yesterday. But some great shots, showing Zurich off | :49:31. | :49:36.
in all of its glory this morning. A couple of little twisty Turney | :49:37. | :49:40.
sections through this park area, and one or two grass areas, which they | :49:41. | :49:46.
have put matting over, and then they make their way back onto the paved | :49:47. | :49:56.
area. So this is an early kind of attempt to break away. Running just | :49:57. | :50:02.
a little quicker than the others. He has a seven second lead at the | :50:03. | :50:11.
moment. Such early stages. And one or two others are just dropping off | :50:12. | :50:21.
already. 15 point to five for the leader for the second 5K, that is | :50:22. | :50:35.
why he has built up a bit of a lead -- 15.25. A lot more people out on | :50:36. | :50:40.
the streets, as we have been remarking. It has been a slightly | :50:41. | :50:44.
disappointing feature of these championships, I think only Friday | :50:45. | :50:49.
night, the stadium was pretty much completely full. Hopefully and back | :50:50. | :51:02.
-- it will be today, a nice sunny day. The prospects for Britain | :51:03. | :51:06.
today, the 5,000m with Mo Farah and Andy Vernon. The men's 1,500m final, | :51:07. | :51:16.
Chris O'Hare and Charlie Grice going. The relays, the 4 x 100, 4 x | :51:17. | :51:27.
400. Greg Rutherford in the long jump. Lots to look forward to. I was | :51:28. | :51:34.
talking to Mehdi Bala yesterday, won the 800m here in 2002, but he feels | :51:35. | :51:52.
that Mekise will come through and win. We know he was foolish, taking | :51:53. | :51:58.
his vest off on the finishing straight, but he did win the race | :51:59. | :52:02.
comfortably, but at the end of the day, it was silly what he did but | :52:03. | :52:06.
the punishment seem a little harsh. A lot of people have done worse | :52:07. | :52:09.
things in the sport and collected gold medals. He was very emotional | :52:10. | :52:14.
when he ran the semifinals and it would be a popular victory, people | :52:15. | :52:18.
would feel as though he has had his punishment and now he is trying to | :52:19. | :52:24.
run and get a medal, because he wanted a medal. It has been an odd | :52:25. | :52:30.
championships for the French, they are doing well, they are rubbed | :52:31. | :52:34.
their ahead of Great Britain, but when you consider the favourite fell | :52:35. | :52:41.
apart in the 800, Martinot-Lagarde was the favourite to win the | :52:42. | :52:48.
hurdles, and Jimmy Vicaut got injured. While a lot of athletes for | :52:49. | :52:52.
us have come and performed, and we haven't had too many | :52:53. | :52:55.
disappointments, for the French, it has been up and down. On the other | :52:56. | :53:04.
hand, they have had a world-record and a marathon victory, that may be | :53:05. | :53:10.
Daunay was not expecting -- was expecting, but the team may not have | :53:11. | :53:14.
been. They are well represented in that lead group. In fact, I think | :53:15. | :53:21.
three or four of the French team are in that group. Starting to break up | :53:22. | :53:25.
a little bit as they give chase, because they have decided that | :53:26. | :53:28.
Chabowski is somebody they don't want to let out there for too long, | :53:29. | :53:36.
although it is still early stages. Seven or eight seconds, it has got a | :53:37. | :53:41.
little bit bigger. They have decided enough is enough. They are allowing | :53:42. | :53:58.
him to take them back. Chabowski is a two-time marathon runner and he is | :53:59. | :54:03.
probably running not far off that pace. So it is not something that is | :54:04. | :54:12.
suicidal by him and something he would not be able to maintain, so I | :54:13. | :54:18.
wouldn't let someone of his calibre moved too far away. That is a pretty | :54:19. | :54:26.
nasty pronation on the left foot. Do you want to explain pronation? It is | :54:27. | :54:35.
when the foot rolls in. 20 people in plenty of running shoe shops have | :54:36. | :54:40.
heard that term -- plenty of. I think I first heard that term in the | :54:41. | :54:45.
1980s and suddenly, everybody was a pro-NATO, because everybody's foot | :54:46. | :54:51.
does turn in when you are running -- everybody was prone ating. | :54:52. | :55:13.
The famous European champion, Viktor Rothlin. Just in a good position, | :55:14. | :55:34.
doing the right thing. El Hachimi, running the Belgium. This group | :55:35. | :55:37.
looks comfortable, that is what you want to be, in the middle of this | :55:38. | :55:41.
and if you have intentions to win medals, you have to be in amongst | :55:42. | :55:46.
it. On the inside, Rothlin, Pertile, the Italian, El Hachimi on the near | :55:47. | :55:57.
side. In the white vests, representing a variety of countries, | :55:58. | :56:00.
Switzerland, Italy, France, all running sensibly. I think we are | :56:01. | :56:07.
going to spend a lot of time concentrating on this man, he has | :56:08. | :56:12.
definitely brought the crowd said. It is the most supported event on | :56:13. | :56:17.
the whole Championships today and as a group, they are settling down | :56:18. | :56:23.
here. About, what, seven or eight seconds behind the leader, who has | :56:24. | :56:27.
just turned and is on his way back to the city centre, and this group | :56:28. | :56:33.
following him, maybe getting a bit concerned, because he is a good | :56:34. | :56:37.
marathon runner, Chabowski. He is down the road there and they may be | :56:38. | :56:43.
want to keep an eye on him. Yes, you could just see as they came to the | :56:44. | :56:46.
turnaround point, Abraham signalling, I don't know if he was | :56:47. | :56:51.
signalling to Rothlin, because he has an idea of how big that gap is | :56:52. | :56:56.
ahead to Chabowski and whether he was questioning should they push on | :56:57. | :57:01.
to do a bit more in this group to close that gap down a little bit. | :57:02. | :57:11.
The other race within this race is the team competition, Poland, Italy, | :57:12. | :57:15.
France, they all have three in that big group. Russia involved as well. | :57:16. | :57:25.
This is the guy who I think could have a good run today, Henryk | :57:26. | :57:31.
Szost, ninth in the Olympic Games in London. There is a bit of a | :57:32. | :57:41.
resurgence in Polish running these days. It is good to see, because | :57:42. | :57:46.
over the years, there used to be really strong athletes representing | :57:47. | :57:49.
Poland and they are doing well here in these championships, and I hope | :57:50. | :57:54.
it is the start of a real resurgence. Chabowski, former | :57:55. | :57:57.
European Juniors steeplechase champion, he has only run a couple | :57:58. | :58:02.
of marathons. He has done a good time, two hours and 11 minutes this | :58:03. | :58:06.
year and two hours ten minutes last year. So he has some credentials. He | :58:07. | :58:14.
is out on his own and you wonder, is that him trying to make an effort to | :58:15. | :58:18.
win the race and run away from the field or is he just happy running at | :58:19. | :58:25.
the pace he has chosen to run out? I think sometimes, when you are worth | :58:26. | :58:31.
a certain time in the marathon, to run around slower and then | :58:32. | :58:35.
accelerate, it can be difficult, your legs can settle into the slower | :58:36. | :58:40.
pace and when it picks up, it can be difficult, so sometimes it is more | :58:41. | :58:44.
comfortable to run at the pace you are prepared to run out, that you | :58:45. | :58:48.
had trained at, and on a day like today, when there is not much wind | :58:49. | :58:53.
out there, there is nothing he would need to specifically stay in a group | :58:54. | :58:56.
four, for protection in that form, so I think he is comfortable running | :58:57. | :58:58.
his own race. So a left turn for the leader. These | :58:59. | :59:24.
athletes, for European athletes, sometimes it is difficult to get | :59:25. | :59:27.
into the big-city marathons these days, with so many Kenyans and | :59:28. | :59:32.
Ethiopians contesting the race at the front, you keep reading they are | :59:33. | :59:39.
ten, 12, 18th, but they are running quite well in a lot of these | :59:40. | :59:43.
marathons, so a lot of the European men are targeting the marathons | :59:44. | :59:47.
around Europe, the likes of the Zurich marathon, or the Warsaw | :59:48. | :59:52.
Marathon. They can get into races where they can actually have a | :59:53. | :59:56.
chance of winning and it is difficult to them correlate one | :59:57. | :00:01.
against another. So for instance, Chabowski was fifth in the marathon | :00:02. | :00:07.
in his home country and his team-mate, Shegumo, won it, he is | :00:08. | :00:14.
back in the pack. So you wouldn't expect him to be forging away | :00:15. | :00:18.
against people he has competed against and have finished ahead of | :00:19. | :00:21.
him. It is interesting they are letting him go, it might be that | :00:22. | :00:26.
even his team-mates don't think he can maintain this. Because you do | :00:27. | :00:29.
know your own team-mates better than anyone else and maybe they are | :00:30. | :00:32.
thinking they have seen him do this before. Zoes is make nothing effort | :00:33. | :00:40.
to share any of the work in moving back towards him. There is probably | :00:41. | :00:46.
more experience in this group, certainly in the form of Rothlin and | :00:47. | :00:50.
Szost. They realise the testing nature of the course means the most | :00:51. | :00:54.
significant portion will be the third and the fourth lap and how | :00:55. | :00:59.
people handle the incline and the decline. The leader crossing the | :01:00. | :01:07.
bridge. The following group coming through under the Minster. Two | :01:08. | :01:13.
beautiful churches dominate this part of Zurich and the crowds here | :01:14. | :01:20.
are very impressive and the athletes will get a great experience. They're | :01:21. | :01:28.
seeing a Polish athlete leading by a fair distance as the second group | :01:29. | :01:34.
comes on to the bridge. He is already 12 or 13 seconds ahead. The | :01:35. | :01:41.
second group is a distance behind him that they need to start thinking | :01:42. | :01:49.
about. You don't want to be building up gaps. Viktor Rothlin looking at | :01:50. | :01:59.
his watch. The crowd are roaring them on and Rothlin was paying | :02:00. | :02:06.
attention to his split times. The reason that gap has got bigger is | :02:07. | :02:12.
that was the biggest five kilometre section so far. They're really | :02:13. | :02:18.
pushing it on. So the leader, Chabowski, put his foot down and | :02:19. | :02:23.
they have let him go. It remains to be seen whether he has got it right, | :02:24. | :02:30.
or they have got it right. Running alongside the river, I mentioned | :02:31. | :02:40.
yesterday about the mass event, and everybody gets an inflatable and | :02:41. | :02:45.
they coast, cruise down w the current. You all put your kit on the | :02:46. | :02:50.
bus. They take your kit and everyone has a nice day on the river. Last | :02:51. | :02:57.
year the inflatables were crock tiles. -- crocodiles. That sound | :02:58. | :03:11.
like a good thing to do. Not all 400 thousand people did it Brendan. You | :03:12. | :03:22.
need an inflatable to swim. I might come back to see you in the water. | :03:23. | :03:26.
If ewere made to be in the water we would have webbed fingers and feet! | :03:27. | :03:42.
#12k3w4r6r7b8g9s Groips starting to stripping out a bit more. Each time | :03:43. | :03:47.
as they come round, people have different strategies to attacking | :03:48. | :03:50.
this hill and where they want to be, but they have now started to wake up | :03:51. | :03:56.
to the fact that Chabowski had such a big lead and they're trying to | :03:57. | :04:02.
close that up this section. They can see what we can look forward to this | :04:03. | :04:13.
afternoon. Those relays will be the climax of a successful European | :04:14. | :04:18.
Championships so far. Come on guys, what are those things on his socks? | :04:19. | :04:24.
I think they have taped up the logo on the back of his sock. That is | :04:25. | :04:28.
pathetic. Not from his point of view. Trying to tape it up. Get some | :04:29. | :04:35.
decent tape, if you really want to cover up. Oh, here we go. Here we | :04:36. | :04:44.
have Mr Foster. You see I told you it is called a Polybahn. That is the | :04:45. | :04:52.
name of it - it's a funicular railway! You can go on it, it is | :04:53. | :04:58.
free. It is not free, you get on it free, because you have an | :04:59. | :05:09.
accreditation. I didn't know. I did enjoy the ride and it takes you up | :05:10. | :05:13.
to the highest part of the course and it is a beautiful view from the | :05:14. | :05:18.
top. This group now work hard to try and close that gap. They will know | :05:19. | :05:25.
about Chabowski, his team mates will know he is an experienced marathon | :05:26. | :05:33.
runner of some quality. He is the man on the inside with the sun | :05:34. | :05:39.
glasses on getting great support and this crowd are really enjoying this | :05:40. | :05:44.
marathon and he is enjoying the fact he has delivered such a fantastic | :05:45. | :05:48.
number. It would be interesting to know how many people are on this | :05:49. | :05:54.
course. It is a great place to watch the marathon. You can see them four | :05:55. | :05:59.
times the. This is the place to position yourself. And then up to | :06:00. | :06:04.
the top of the hill and take the funicular back down and get back to | :06:05. | :06:10.
the centre. Our wonderful back room staff here, they love me calling | :06:11. | :06:21.
that. They found out that funicular Isola is Latin for rope or chain. So | :06:22. | :06:26.
that links into the banana rope. This a guy at the top pulling the | :06:27. | :06:33.
rope? Yes, look at him having to work hard. It is about, we talked of | :06:34. | :06:40.
the different styles of running up a hill. He rocks from side to side. | :06:41. | :06:45.
The high knee lift not required running up the hill. There is the | :06:46. | :06:50.
angle of the funicular. It is steep, yes, it is. This section issing not | :06:51. | :06:56.
that long, it is just much steeper than you would find on a course like | :06:57. | :07:00.
this. I know you were on about the rise in New York, that is a gradual | :07:01. | :07:08.
rise, this happens at once. Yes the New York ones are gradual. But it is | :07:09. | :07:13.
like the Tour de France with the Swiss flags and how close they are | :07:14. | :07:21.
to the runners and those advertising hoardings. It is like the Tour de | :07:22. | :07:28.
France when it visited the narrow streets in Yorkshire. And there is | :07:29. | :07:36.
Viktor rovt Lynne, he ep -- - Rothlin, who helped to design the | :07:37. | :07:47.
course. In the lead is Abraham. They're working together and that | :07:48. | :07:51.
group is opening up. This is the second of four of this long incline. | :07:52. | :07:59.
The crowds have gather on this incline, like the Tour de France | :08:00. | :08:06.
crowds. Not a very wide space as we watch Chabowski leading, 52 minutes | :08:07. | :08:10.
of running behind him. And he has made his intent. That is to try and | :08:11. | :08:14.
win it from a long way out. He has been leading for the last ten | :08:15. | :08:18.
kilometres. As the rest of the field, the two Swiss athletes | :08:19. | :08:22.
together in second and third, giving the crowd more to support and more | :08:23. | :08:28.
to cheer. Are they going to have a glorious day in this glorious city | :08:29. | :08:32.
on such a beautiful day? Well time will tell. But that is significant | :08:33. | :08:40.
happenings in the group. Rothlin working hard in what is probably his | :08:41. | :08:46.
farewell distance race. Certainly his farewell marathon race. He looks | :08:47. | :08:56.
as though he is struggling. It is difficult to come back from running | :08:57. | :09:03.
a spring marathon to running a competition marathon in the summer. | :09:04. | :09:13.
There is not the turn around time to prepare. Maybe he hasn't recovered | :09:14. | :09:26.
from his exerts in the spring. The eagle-eyed may have spotted Coolly | :09:27. | :09:36.
in the crowd. The mascot who has scored -- caused differing opinions. | :09:37. | :09:42.
I think he has been a great addition to the Championships. We are still | :09:43. | :09:46.
trying to work out, the big question is who is Coolly, is there one, two | :09:47. | :09:54.
Coollies. Well, there is only one Coolly. I think there is one Coolly | :09:55. | :09:59.
suit. But each internal Coolly is not allowed to do more than half an | :10:00. | :10:08.
hour, because he gets tired. Oh! Well Chabowski down the hill now, | :10:09. | :10:15.
letting himself relax. Just you have to try and flow down the hill. It | :10:16. | :10:21.
won't be taxing him too much. But maybe next time. That lead is quite | :10:22. | :10:27.
a substantial one at this stage. Does he have the pedigree to hold on | :10:28. | :10:33.
and keep this sort of case going? -- pace going? He looks strong and | :10:34. | :10:43.
powerful. He has been a European junior champion at the steeplechase | :10:44. | :10:47.
and worked his way through over the years. As we look at the museum of | :10:48. | :10:53.
fine art. I did go there the other day, Steve s despite what you said. | :10:54. | :10:58.
I only asked, I didn't say you didn't go. I saw the famous Picasso | :10:59. | :11:08.
painting and I look the Andy Warhol painting of Campbell's soup tin. | :11:09. | :11:14.
Didn't he do a few. I think he did one and then printed thousands. | :11:15. | :11:19.
They're all over the place. Smart idea. This man has given chase in | :11:20. | :11:27.
the Poland one/two, Szost just breaking out of the group and | :11:28. | :11:34.
realising that is a big gap and he doesn't want it to go grow any more. | :11:35. | :11:44.
24.2 kilometres an hour there on the bike behind him. That is very quick. | :11:45. | :11:51.
Do you think they get in the car. The women hit a top speed of 21.5. | :11:52. | :12:01.
He turns there towards the Opera House and along the banks of the | :12:02. | :12:06.
lake, the flat part of the course. This part, another part where the | :12:07. | :12:10.
crowds are out in great numbers. It is wonderful to see. The support | :12:11. | :12:16.
they're getting, I'm sure they will say they did appreciate the crowd | :12:17. | :12:37.
support. Abraham of Switzerland, Hachimi is there. Hopefully this | :12:38. | :12:41.
group will be encouraged by one another to start closing that gap. | :12:42. | :12:46.
They have been running for almost an hour and this flat part is a respite | :12:47. | :12:53.
from the uphill and down hill. And we see the leader, Chabowski, | :12:54. | :12:59.
receiving terrific support. It is interesting, they have let Chabowski | :13:00. | :13:04.
go, but when Szost started to go after him, the group decided to let | :13:05. | :13:09.
him go as well. You would have thought if Szost was starting to | :13:10. | :13:15.
make a move, I am trying to work out, I'm sure Szost is between these | :13:16. | :13:22.
guys. Is he not at the back of this group. Over the top of the hill, he | :13:23. | :13:27.
was dropping off the hill, behind Mohammed. I am not sure wra that | :13:28. | :13:35.
camera -- where that camera angle picked that up. They will be | :13:36. | :13:41.
approaching the 20 kilometre mark, through a mist machine which tries | :13:42. | :13:44.
to give them some respite from the building heat here and the sun is | :13:45. | :13:51.
definitely out in force this morning. You can see there just | :13:52. | :13:55.
they're getting a bit of shadow. There is a lot of course that is | :13:56. | :14:01.
quite open and that temperature will continue to rise. The Swiss flags, I | :14:02. | :14:07.
think you're right, I think... He is one of the French or Italian | :14:08. | :14:11.
athletes going through there. I don't know whether now we might see. | :14:12. | :14:18.
It is hard to see. There is Szost. He is struggling a bit. He looks as | :14:19. | :14:24.
if he is as well. He came with high hopes and one of the more fancied | :14:25. | :14:30.
athletes, but he is struggling and Chabowski off the front for Poland | :14:31. | :14:37.
and Szost off the back of the chasing group. That is going to be a | :14:38. | :14:43.
long, hard slog for him. We mentioned the team competition rgs | :14:44. | :14:47.
one of the things when you're on your own you can decide to call it a | :14:48. | :14:52.
day. But with this team competition, where if you're having a bad run and | :14:53. | :14:57.
you have to keep going it can't be easy. C Though, it is very hard, and | :14:58. | :15:11.
for the team competition, ideally, he needs to keep those gaps as small | :15:12. | :15:19.
as possible. Benjamin Malaty, of France. And | :15:20. | :15:26.
there is Mustafa Mohamed, of Sweden, trying to get back to that group. He | :15:27. | :15:32.
has obviously gone through a little patch, didn't cope with the hill | :15:33. | :15:36.
very well, but he is close enough, just hanging on, just about, to this | :15:37. | :15:41.
large group that is watching Chabowski disappeared down the road | :15:42. | :15:46.
ahead of them. That lead is quite a substantial lead. They have had a | :15:47. | :15:49.
couple of bites of trying to close it down. El Hachimi of Belgium has | :15:50. | :15:54.
tried to take others with him and they have not been that keen, so | :15:55. | :16:00.
that lead continues to grow. Once that gets beyond a minute, if they | :16:01. | :16:05.
are allowed to do that, and it gets into the second half of the race, of | :16:06. | :16:10.
course, you can lose it in the latter stages but that lead can | :16:11. | :16:12.
build and build and before you know where you are, the gold medal has | :16:13. | :16:19.
gone. Exactly, similar to the way Augusto ran yesterday when she left | :16:20. | :16:22.
the leading group get a small gap on her in the first lap, for no real | :16:23. | :16:26.
reason other than she didn't want to get going in the race too early, and | :16:27. | :16:32.
then she was running the same pace as the others through the second, | :16:33. | :16:35.
third and fourth laps but was unable to close that initial gap and paid | :16:36. | :16:42.
the price with just a bronze medal. So he has gone through 20 | :16:43. | :16:53.
kilometres. 15.12 through that final five kilometres section, the one | :16:54. | :17:00.
before that was 15.02, but compared to the first ten Cate, it was almost | :17:01. | :17:05.
a minute quicker. That is why he has got that gap -- the first ten | :17:06. | :17:10.
kilometres. And once he turns into the park and comes back through | :17:11. | :17:14.
along Lakeside, he will be approaching the halfway point. It is | :17:15. | :17:20.
an early stage of the marathon to be going so hard and building a lead, | :17:21. | :17:23.
and they are all looking at each other, there are a few conversations | :17:24. | :17:28.
going on in that group. Viktor Rothlin in there with his gold | :17:29. | :17:32.
number, the defending champion, in the glasses. And as we saw a few | :17:33. | :17:44.
minutes ago, Szost of Poland really struggling. | :17:45. | :17:52.
And once they go into the Chinese gardens, they will go to the drinks | :17:53. | :17:58.
station and they will get the chance to get a drink from a team official, | :17:59. | :18:04.
and they can give information and I am sure many of the officials will | :18:05. | :18:08.
be giving information on how big the gap is to Chabowski. Once he | :18:09. | :18:12.
disappears up the road, it is hard to gauge how far it is and whether | :18:13. | :18:16.
you are closing or if he is still going away. | :18:17. | :18:24.
STEVE CRAM: Well, his marathon career started just about three | :18:25. | :18:31.
years ago, and when he ran in the big-city marathon in Warsaw, 2:14 | :18:32. | :18:39.
was his first attempt. He has improved that and he is attempting | :18:40. | :18:42.
to try and win this European title here, and it is a brave effort from | :18:43. | :18:49.
Chabowski... El Hachimi getting a little clip from Viktor Rothlin as | :18:50. | :18:58.
he takes his water on board. Lalli is a familiar figure to | :18:59. | :19:03.
cross-country fans over the years. Abraham is still there, Rothlin and | :19:04. | :19:11.
Abraham. Abraham cleared to run for Switzerland recently, he has lived | :19:12. | :19:16.
here, he lives in Geneva, for ten years. A familiar figure on the road | :19:17. | :19:21.
race scene, the marathon scene, here in Switzerland. Just watching Viktor | :19:22. | :19:29.
Rothlin as he came through there at the feed station, he was doing the | :19:30. | :19:33.
same as one persuades athletes yesterday that at one of the Swiss | :19:34. | :19:40.
athletes yesterday, they have that squeezy pack on the outside of the | :19:41. | :19:51.
drink, so he is squeezing that at the same time as putting the water | :19:52. | :19:56.
over him, so you have the Khyber harder to swallow and the water over | :19:57. | :19:59.
you. It is the first time I have seen anything like that. But the | :20:00. | :20:09.
leading group are starting to close down that gap. You can see Viktor | :20:10. | :20:13.
Rothlin is starting to encourage the pace to move along. He has clearly | :20:14. | :20:19.
repaired himself well, as we watch Chabowski, who must be very close to | :20:20. | :20:26.
the halfway point now. We might get some information about the halfway | :20:27. | :20:30.
point. Yes, there is a clock, there it is. 64:45, so he has picked it | :20:31. | :20:40.
up, bringing them under the two hour pace, which is very brave indeed, | :20:41. | :20:46.
given the hill, given the course. He is now operating inside his personal | :20:47. | :20:53.
best. 2:10, under 2:10, on this course, would be a remarkable | :20:54. | :20:58.
performance. The women ran extremely well yesterday, running two, -- | :20:59. | :21:10.
2:25, Daunay ran a personal best. I think Chabowski has taken some hard | :21:11. | :21:14.
from the fact that there are so many people out cheering him. This | :21:15. | :21:18.
chasing group are suddenly going to have to think about getting serious. | :21:19. | :21:23.
But, remember, there are two more vicious inclines to negotiate | :21:24. | :21:28.
between now and at the finish. They make take their toll on Chabowski | :21:29. | :21:34.
and I think Rothlin, the defending champion, is running a very sensible | :21:35. | :21:41.
race, with his team-mate, Abraham. El Hachimi are Belgium, he has | :21:42. | :21:46.
always been keen to move the pace along as they move along the flat | :21:47. | :21:50.
part of the course alongside the late. Here is the leader, you can | :21:51. | :21:56.
see the motorbike leading the chasing group. It always looks a | :21:57. | :22:00.
little bit closer than it really is, when you look ahead on on the | :22:01. | :22:05.
motorbike, to the motorbike. But this man, Chabowski, getting more | :22:06. | :22:12.
experienced. A solid marathon runner at the moment. He could change that | :22:13. | :22:16.
by winning this one. You could say he is good, strong, solid, a good | :22:17. | :22:20.
performer, and can he translate a good performance into a championship | :22:21. | :22:22.
winning performance. STEVE CRAM: Huge crowds at the | :22:23. | :22:37.
intersection where they turn, and on the last lap, this will be where he | :22:38. | :22:44.
sees the finishing line. Has he judged this right, Chabowski? It is | :22:45. | :22:49.
a brave pace he has said that, not so much the first 5K, but after | :22:50. | :22:58.
that, 15-25, that second ten kilometres, it has given him this | :22:59. | :23:03.
league, about 48 seconds at the halfway point and now, perhaps, | :23:04. | :23:08.
finally, they are starting to think about getting going. You have to be | :23:09. | :23:12.
careful, if you are starting your Chase, you have to judge that right. | :23:13. | :23:17.
The main thing at the moment is to stop that lead growing. And I think | :23:18. | :23:23.
it is still growing, I think he is going away from the field. They are | :23:24. | :23:27.
biding their time, looking at each other. Every half a mile that goes | :23:28. | :23:32.
by, he gets another five seconds or so. Yes, he gained another four | :23:33. | :23:40.
seconds in the garden section of the race between the 20km and half | :23:41. | :23:45.
marathon point. Mustafa Mohamed just checking his split times and trying | :23:46. | :23:50.
to hang onto the back of that group. I think they are having difficulty | :23:51. | :23:56.
organising themselves. Nobody is particularly keen to take the lead. | :23:57. | :24:00.
El Hachimi has taken a turn, Abraham has taken a turn, then they have | :24:01. | :24:06.
looked to everyone else and no one is particularly keen and the pace | :24:07. | :24:09.
settles back then. I still think I would rather be in this chasing | :24:10. | :24:14.
group that out there on my own. I know your style of running, Paula, | :24:15. | :24:18.
was to be out on your own, running as hard as you could and as fast as | :24:19. | :24:23.
you could, but in a competitive race like this, with athletes of a | :24:24. | :24:26.
similar ability, I just feel that this chasing group is the area to | :24:27. | :24:31.
be. I may be wrong, because Chabowski looks strong. He is | :24:32. | :24:40.
experienced at winning races, but I suppose you have to learn somewhere, | :24:41. | :24:45.
and this is the place to learn. The person who knows Best is him | :24:46. | :24:49.
himself. If you are going to run your own race and go hard at the | :24:50. | :24:54.
front, you have to be very confident about the shape you are in. If he | :24:55. | :24:59.
has done that right, he has made a good move. If I was sat in this | :25:00. | :25:04.
pack, I would be worried, but then I never liked to let people get too | :25:05. | :25:10.
far ahead, particularly if I was operating at a slower pace. There | :25:11. | :25:14.
are a few in here who are well capable of having gone with him. | :25:15. | :25:19.
That is the point, he has made the decision and he is now trying to win | :25:20. | :25:24.
this race. In his mind is keeping going, keeping in this position. | :25:25. | :25:30.
Behind him, the group have to do two things. They have to lift the pace, | :25:31. | :25:37.
54 seconds... It is growing even faster, he is pushing on. It is | :25:38. | :25:43.
getting close to a minute, it is a big lead, but in a competitive | :25:44. | :25:48.
marathon, in a difficult marathon concerning the course, things can | :25:49. | :25:51.
change drastically in the late stages, and often do. Today, are we | :25:52. | :25:56.
going to see the drama of the marathon unfold, will we see the | :25:57. | :26:02.
chasing group being able to do something about the leader's | :26:03. | :26:07.
position? Nearly a minute ahead, almost an hour left of running. That | :26:08. | :26:11.
power is what makes the marathon such a dramatic event. -- at that | :26:12. | :26:18.
hour. Over the years, we have seen them run biathletes trying to win | :26:19. | :26:21.
races. When you are trying to win one for the first time in a | :26:22. | :26:25.
championship, it is great to see Chabowski trying to win it for the | :26:26. | :26:29.
first time, but is he strong enough, is he experienced enough? We are | :26:30. | :26:35.
looking at Meftah, another athlete I thought would have a chance of | :26:36. | :26:42.
winning this, a personal best of two hours and nine minutes. He is | :26:43. | :26:45.
running a decent race and he is starting to move through, as they | :26:46. | :26:48.
come back towards the city centre again. He is running very close to | :26:49. | :26:55.
that purple line. Sometimes it can be a bit mesmeric. This is the | :26:56. | :27:07.
headquarters of Zurich Insurance and Swiss Life. Did you see the look he | :27:08. | :27:12.
got from some of those guys in that group? They should have got the | :27:13. | :27:17.
information but I don't think they realised how big that gap was and he | :27:18. | :27:21.
got a few surprised glances as they were trying to work out how he had | :27:22. | :27:25.
got such a big lead. Some of them have gone to sleep a little bit. | :27:26. | :27:30.
Watching Meftah, he has worked his way back onto that group. He was not | :27:31. | :27:36.
far ahead of Szost going into the garden section but he seems to have | :27:37. | :27:39.
come to be joined at the back of that group. He looked at one point | :27:40. | :27:44.
as if you may continue moving past and take up the work at the front of | :27:45. | :27:48.
the group but he has settled into the back. You say they were looking | :27:49. | :27:54.
across a prize, a few of them will be surprised to see who it was. They | :27:55. | :28:01.
won't have noticed him drifting away. Powerful athlete from Poland, | :28:02. | :28:06.
Chabowski, at the age of 28, having served his apprenticeship at the | :28:07. | :28:11.
shorter distances, starting off as a European junior champion in the | :28:12. | :28:16.
steeplechase in 2005. He has got ten years good running behind him, maybe | :28:17. | :28:19.
that will give him enough strength and ability to win this one. Can he | :28:20. | :28:25.
win it? Can the Polish athlete win the European marathon championship? | :28:26. | :28:36.
So it looks as though Viktor Rothlin has deciding they need to get a move | :28:37. | :28:44.
on here, because that lead is significant. -- has decided. I am | :28:45. | :28:48.
still a little concern for Chabowski. Only his fourth marathon, | :28:49. | :28:52.
operating at a personal best pace after a slow first ten kilometres. | :28:53. | :28:58.
He doesn't have the experience of some of these other guys. It is a | :28:59. | :29:03.
brave effort from him and if it were to pay off, it would be a | :29:04. | :29:07.
well-deserved victory, but you just send. Read the two questions are, is | :29:08. | :29:15.
there enough in this chasing pack? Abraham has had a difficult year. He | :29:16. | :29:19.
was really targeting these championships, but he had two things | :29:20. | :29:25.
to worry about. One was actually getting his citizenship agreed and, | :29:26. | :29:29.
unlike a lot of countries, Switzerland is a country where you | :29:30. | :29:33.
have to live here a long time to be put forward. He did get it agreed | :29:34. | :29:37.
and was passed to pay for Switzerland -- run for Switzerland. | :29:38. | :29:42.
He is there with Rothlin, he did target this race but he had a couple | :29:43. | :29:47.
of races he had to drop out of through injury, perhaps as much | :29:48. | :29:51.
precautionary as anything else as he prepared for these championships, | :29:52. | :29:57.
but Abraham and Rothlin will be just wondering whether or not they have | :29:58. | :30:01.
got it in their legs. It is one thing that this guy is getting away, | :30:02. | :30:05.
you have actually then got to be able to chase him down. It looks | :30:06. | :30:13.
like they are making an attempt. He saw that gap combroe and now -- grow | :30:14. | :30:21.
and now it is the first time he has gone to the front of that pack to | :30:22. | :30:27.
get them moving back towards Chabowski. Chabowski did take that | :30:28. | :30:32.
detour to go through the mist machine. That may be a sign that the | :30:33. | :30:38.
fatigue is starting to take its toll. He has a worried look on his | :30:39. | :30:43.
face all the time, but I think that is the natural way he looks when he | :30:44. | :30:53.
is running. Yeah that, sort of surprised, worried look. Just | :30:54. | :30:59.
negotiating the tram lines. Just starting to fall off the group a bit | :31:00. | :31:15.
is Buta of Norway. Our leader crosses the river againment still | :31:16. | :31:21.
moving -- crosses the river again. Still moving well. We will get an | :31:22. | :31:35.
idea Hoff of how his basis holding up. -- how his pace is holding up. | :31:36. | :31:45.
He looks relaxed. Just clicks his watch. That is a 15.10, so he is | :31:46. | :31:50.
holding his pace. He is still rung well and you have to say he looks | :31:51. | :31:58.
relaxed and still early stages a lot of running still to go, but so far | :31:59. | :32:04.
so good for Chabowski. The next few minutes will tell us more as he | :32:05. | :32:08.
approaches the incline. He is running along the river, along the | :32:09. | :32:15.
flat part of the course, running sensibly between the tram lines. The | :32:16. | :32:19.
chasing group are still to cross the bridge. There is Chabowski. There is | :32:20. | :32:26.
the chasing group led by Viktor Rothlin as he runs in the shadow of | :32:27. | :32:33.
the two towers. Now the scenery is going by the side. It is now about | :32:34. | :32:37.
competitive marathon race running and we have a good group of good | :32:38. | :32:42.
strong athletes approaching the third time up the hill. We have | :32:43. | :32:48.
crowds like the Tour de France when it toured through Yorkshire earlier | :32:49. | :32:56.
this year. Now we will see the split time. Now it is getting serious and | :32:57. | :33:01.
now it is coming for real and the chasing group, including the | :33:02. | :33:06.
champion and the favourite of the locals in Zurich has got to get on | :33:07. | :33:09.
with the business of climbing that hill and getting closer to the | :33:10. | :33:14.
leader. Can he hold the pace, the lead sner can the chasing -- can he | :33:15. | :33:22.
hold the pace, the leader? Can the chasing group do anything about it? | :33:23. | :33:32.
The individual race led by Poland at the minute. And the team race, we | :33:33. | :33:37.
should keep an eye on that, that is a medal, Italy have a narrow lead | :33:38. | :33:43.
over France. But it about getting three people through. Poland | :33:44. | :33:48.
starting to struggle. This is Szost, he is off the back of the group of | :33:49. | :33:53.
Chabowski, in front, building that lead. That helps his team in terms | :33:54. | :33:59.
of time. But Szost has been dropping off and Poland may well have the | :34:00. | :34:08.
leader individually, but they have to work hard to hold on to the lead | :34:09. | :34:13.
in the team competition. Poland, Italy and France vie fogger that -- | :34:14. | :34:23.
vying for that team spot. That is a very close team race. I think it is | :34:24. | :34:29.
a good addition. It makes the guys who are dropping off, they still | :34:30. | :34:37.
have to keep going, there is a medal to b won. It gives the teams the | :34:38. | :34:41.
opportunity, although Britain doesn't have a team after the | :34:42. | :34:46.
Commonwealth Games which was a huge distraction of being able to target | :34:47. | :34:50.
the championships. It would have meant in a normal year, if we can't | :34:51. | :34:56.
attack individual medals, you can put people in the events to try and | :34:57. | :35:09.
get you to win a team medal. Italy will be helping they can still stay | :35:10. | :35:27.
strong. They're well represented. Patile is leading them up the hill. | :35:28. | :35:32.
Chabowski still seems to be running strong up the hill. Mohammed on the | :35:33. | :35:38.
back of that group trying to hang on. He doesn't like the hills, does | :35:39. | :35:44.
he? Every time up the hill he looks as though he is going to lose | :35:45. | :35:50.
ground. But he doesn't panic and he tries to make it up over the next | :35:51. | :35:56.
five kilometres or so. But he does lose ground up the hill. Chabowski | :35:57. | :36:01.
still looks strong up that hill. There is no difference in his style | :36:02. | :36:06.
from the first time up the hill and each time he is growing in | :36:07. | :36:08.
confidence as he gets the information that that gap has grown. | :36:09. | :36:14.
Only he knows how much he has left in his legs. Viktor Rothlin likes | :36:15. | :36:25.
this particular point. Just Just brushing the sweat off husband his | :36:26. | :36:32.
forehead. He knows he will have to do something special to win this. I | :36:33. | :36:37.
will be looking for clues for the leader Chabowski when he climbs that | :36:38. | :36:43.
very severe incline and a big effort by Viktor Rothlin and his style of | :36:44. | :36:49.
running is he always runs strongly in the late stages. He has always | :36:50. | :36:54.
been an athlete who has been able to finish strongly. He was second in | :36:55. | :36:59.
the European Championships and then he won the European Championships. | :37:00. | :37:02.
So now we are seeing a bit of distress on the face of Chabowski as | :37:03. | :37:08.
he climbs this tough incline. That is the first sign, a bit of weakness | :37:09. | :37:17.
here. His coach, the Russian athlete, is a very good athlete. He | :37:18. | :37:30.
has been well guided and well structured through his training and | :37:31. | :37:36.
ready for this one as he comes out and levels. He is hoping one more | :37:37. | :37:42.
incline. Do we see any more clues. We will see and get a real clue | :37:43. | :37:47.
about the destination of the gold medal. There is the chasing group. | :37:48. | :37:59.
Patile of Italy coming close. Lalli, who won the cross country | :38:00. | :38:06.
Championships and Mohammed Mustafa getting closer. And you can see what | :38:07. | :38:11.
is ahead of them. That is another tough climb. I would like to see the | :38:12. | :38:15.
leader to see how he coped with that last incline. Lalli starting to | :38:16. | :38:26.
stretch them up the hill. El Hachimi is going backwards. One minute he is | :38:27. | :38:29.
struggling and then he is back at the front, trying to push that pace. | :38:30. | :38:36.
I think he is struggling to find a pace that suits him. Chabowski | :38:37. | :38:47.
crests that highest point again and there is his time through that | :38:48. | :38:51.
section. We will get an idea of how big that gap is. I think Chabowski | :38:52. | :38:57.
is starting to show more distress. Although up that hill it is natural | :38:58. | :39:01.
that your mouth will open more to get more oxygen in. That frown has | :39:02. | :39:18.
been on his face since he started. Hard, hard work up that hill. The | :39:19. | :39:23.
sun beating down, the temperature rising. It is only going to get | :39:24. | :39:29.
tougher as Rothlin, Lalli Abraham, they have got to give chase if they | :39:30. | :39:39.
want to win the medal. She Guus mow -- she Shegumo is also in that | :39:40. | :39:49.
group. The Italians well represented in that group. The Swiss crossing | :39:50. | :39:56.
their fingers, hoping that Rothlin or Abraham can push on. One gold | :39:57. | :40:04.
medal for swits Llan in the 400 -- for Switzerland in the 400 metres | :40:05. | :40:09.
hurdles. There are more people on the streets. More Swiss flags | :40:10. | :40:17.
watching this marathon. It would be marvellous for them if one of theirs | :40:18. | :40:24.
could run down the leader. They're just coming across for some drinks | :40:25. | :40:29.
there. There is a water station. Not their own feed station. He is | :40:30. | :40:34.
starting to look tired to me, that relaxed face is now looking | :40:35. | :40:40.
strained. The head is going back a bit. He is still working hard. It is | :40:41. | :40:55.
a brave thing to try and do. He is still inexperienced, his fourth | :40:56. | :41:00.
marathon. He finished well in Germany in a high quality race, | :41:01. | :41:05.
finished fourth. But he wasn't any where near the leader. To actually | :41:06. | :41:12.
go out with the lack of experience he has and try and attack this from | :41:13. | :41:17.
such an early point on a course like this, you have got to have immense | :41:18. | :41:21.
confidence in the shape that you're N He clearly has the confidence. | :41:22. | :41:27.
Because he struck out about the 10 kilometre point and he has been | :41:28. | :41:31.
running strongly. We are seeing signs, which isn't surprising from | :41:32. | :41:35.
the leader. This chasing group when you look at the time. The leader is | :41:36. | :41:41.
about a minute and 10 seconds ahead. Now, if he can hold it together and | :41:42. | :41:46.
run this last 10 kilometre at the Saturday of pace he what -- sort of | :41:47. | :41:51.
pace he has ran the previous 10 kilometres, then he can win. But can | :41:52. | :41:57.
he hold it together. One more run along the lake and one more climb up | :41:58. | :42:01.
the hill and starting to show the tiredness we would expect of this | :42:02. | :42:05.
young man trying to win the Championship marathon. And there is | :42:06. | :42:09.
the chasing group. This is the point an hour and a half's rung behind | :42:10. | :42:15.
them, things change in marathons. We are looking at him running down to | :42:16. | :42:22.
the lake again. He looks comfortable and relaxed there. 22.8 kilometres | :42:23. | :42:31.
per hour. He is getting a rare level of support. Wonderful scenes here. | :42:32. | :42:37.
This is where you have got to watch this marathon, this is the area you | :42:38. | :42:42.
want to be, you can see them several times the crossing and coming back | :42:43. | :42:46.
and crossing the bridge. I wonder next time there will be only two | :42:47. | :42:51.
kilometres to go, I wonder whether he is still going to have the lead | :42:52. | :42:55.
and whether if he does have a lead it is a significant one. If it is | :42:56. | :42:58.
still at that point, he has probably got the race won. Reunkov is | :42:59. | :43:11.
dropping off that group. Can the group use this hill to eat into the | :43:12. | :43:16.
lead and the worrying thing for Chabowski, he will see them catching | :43:17. | :43:20.
him, because of the turn arounds. It has been good for him so far, | :43:21. | :43:25.
because he has seen his lead building. But will he see his lead | :43:26. | :43:34.
start to diminish on this final lap. Meftah pushing on. He has a gap down | :43:35. | :43:39.
that hill. He has moved away, better than, he has come down the hill | :43:40. | :43:48.
better than those in the yup. Shegumo is still there and. He needs | :43:49. | :44:01.
to go off on his own and try and do that. He is a bit in no-man's land | :44:02. | :44:05.
as he works back to Chabowski. H he looks as if he is moving | :44:06. | :44:20.
nicely. Somebody before we thought would have had a decent chance. He | :44:21. | :44:24.
hasn't shown a lot of form this year. And he doesn't have anything | :44:25. | :44:30.
which necessarily says he would have stood out as a favourite here. He | :44:31. | :44:35.
didn't finish the Olympic marathon, but he is rung strongly here. Now | :44:36. | :44:43.
moving away from the chasing group. Meftah after Chabowski. Chabowski | :44:44. | :44:47.
starting to look tired. Starting to look a bit strained. Maybe in his | :44:48. | :44:55.
mind he starts to doubt whether or not I have made the right decision. | :44:56. | :45:01.
But he has to just go for it. He has no other choice. So that is the | :45:02. | :45:15.
second placed athlete. Here is the battle for third at the moment, that | :45:16. | :45:20.
is now just by men in that group, and by watching, as Meftah start to | :45:21. | :45:29.
pull away. -- they are watching. But still a good 40 minutes or so left | :45:30. | :45:36.
in this race. Mark Butler said he was reminded of Munich, 2002, when | :45:37. | :45:44.
someone ran away from the field, they let him break away and he run | :45:45. | :45:48.
it. That is what has happened here, Chabowski has broken away, the more | :45:49. | :45:53.
fancied athletes have stayed in a group and for the first time, | :45:54. | :45:58.
Meftah, has broken from the group to try and close the gap. We will see | :45:59. | :46:04.
some revealing signs, is the gap closing all is Chabowski just going | :46:05. | :46:08.
to keep it together, hold it together and continue that gap, | :46:09. | :46:11.
which is about one minute and ten seconds. If it stays around a | :46:12. | :46:17.
minute, you would be betting on him. If it gets less than that, you would | :46:18. | :46:24.
have to think that this man, former European junior steeplechase | :46:25. | :46:28.
champion, well guided by his coach over the distances, can he keep | :46:29. | :46:33.
going and he looks a bit stronger than he did on the top of the hill. | :46:34. | :46:39.
The latest indication was he had lost three or four seconds, one | :46:40. | :46:48.
minute and seven seconds. That camera angle makes those chasers | :46:49. | :46:52.
that a lot closer than they actually are, but he will get a view, | :46:53. | :46:59.
although when he turns right, running along the leg side, he will | :47:00. | :47:03.
not becoming directly back against them, so he went see them entirely | :47:04. | :47:10.
-- lakeside. But he looks a bit tired to make a bit more | :47:11. | :47:13.
flat-footed, and a bit of rolling action in his style now. But he will | :47:14. | :47:21.
try and hang onto this lead. Yes, he looks a little bit fatigued, he | :47:22. | :47:24.
doesn't have the same bounce as he had in the beginning. Meftah, I | :47:25. | :47:30.
thought he did look smooth and comfortable, although it looks that | :47:31. | :47:33.
gap is closing a little bit too Rothlin under the group behind him. | :47:34. | :47:38.
When he originally pushed ahead, Meftah, I thought it was significant | :47:39. | :47:44.
that Rothlin was not able to go with him, because if he could do anymore | :47:45. | :47:48.
to close this gap then, he would have taken the opportunity. Bear is | :47:49. | :47:55.
the 30 kilometre time, he was over one minute and ten seconds ahead of | :47:56. | :48:00.
the chasing group just a moment ago. Let's see where it is when the | :48:01. | :48:06.
closing group them in now. Meftah has a bit of a gap on the rest of | :48:07. | :48:16.
the group. Just behind him, still Viktor Rothlin in that chasing | :48:17. | :48:24.
group. I don't think it is just about how far behind they are, the | :48:25. | :48:30.
significant thing was that Chabowski's 5K split was 15:44, the | :48:31. | :48:35.
slowest of the whole race, which means he is slowing significantly. | :48:36. | :48:38.
But the group aren't moving that much quicker than him. He has slowed | :48:39. | :48:46.
a lot, but they have not sped up, so the gap has not diminished that | :48:47. | :48:50.
much. It is diminishing, but the question is how slow he gets, and if | :48:51. | :48:57.
anyone in the group can push on. He will see when he turns what the gap | :48:58. | :49:01.
is and they will also get the chance to see how well he is coping, which | :49:02. | :49:06.
can sometimes produce renewed energy. But we have a real race on | :49:07. | :49:10.
our hands, the classic drama of the marathon. The chasing group waited | :49:11. | :49:15.
and waited and now there are gaps in merging in that chasing group. I | :49:16. | :49:23.
think Chabowski is getting really tired, he dropped his drink, pouring | :49:24. | :49:27.
water on his head. Are these the signs of a man who has run too | :49:28. | :49:34.
fast? If he keeps going at the pace he went earlier, he will win this | :49:35. | :49:39.
race. And Steve saying the five kilometres split was the slowest of | :49:40. | :49:47.
the race, there is a group here, including Rothlin, but can pick up | :49:48. | :49:52.
the pieces. There is one big more big climb for Chabowski to come. | :49:53. | :50:04.
Polish never one marathon European Championships medal. Rothlin just | :50:05. | :50:09.
falling off that group. However, he can be very strong in the last ten | :50:10. | :50:15.
kilometres of marathon race, he has demonstrated that on several | :50:16. | :50:18.
occasions in the past. He has been a champion, been as silver-medallist | :50:19. | :50:21.
and does not want to finish his career without a medal, but this is | :50:22. | :50:26.
an interesting time for the Swiss favourite. Yes, not interesting in | :50:27. | :50:31.
the sense that anything good is happening for him. He just looks a | :50:32. | :50:42.
bit tired now. But as we all know, ten kilometres of hard running, | :50:43. | :50:47.
there or thereabouts, and all sorts of things will happen. Rothlin will | :50:48. | :50:57.
be strong but you wonder at the age of 39 if he has the chance of a | :50:58. | :51:01.
medal. The leader being encouraged by big crowds as he heads back onto | :51:02. | :51:06.
the road. Next time around, if he still has a lead, he will not be far | :51:07. | :51:11.
from the finish, just a few hundred metres. Viktor Rothlin watching the | :51:12. | :51:20.
medals may be moving away from him. The chasing group, Meftah is in | :51:21. | :51:37.
there, Shegumo, and this is a difficult time for Rothlin, not able | :51:38. | :51:44.
to go with the group. He has had a great career and there is nothing he | :51:45. | :51:47.
would like better than to finish off his career in his last race with at | :51:48. | :51:54.
least a medal here. He has been a medallist in the last two runnings | :51:55. | :51:57.
of the European Championships Marathon and desperately wants one | :51:58. | :52:01.
on his home turf, but is it slipping away from him? Here is the leader, I | :52:02. | :52:11.
think he is tiring badly now. Trying to renew himself, but the strain of | :52:12. | :52:16.
leading the marathon, if you look at the cadence, his legs are slowing, | :52:17. | :52:19.
he is looking distressed, going through a bad patch. When you do go | :52:20. | :52:25.
through bad patches are times in the marathon, you have to handle it | :52:26. | :52:30.
mentally, don't you. You do, you have to accept, really, when you | :52:31. | :52:33.
move to marathon racing that you will always have a bad patch, no | :52:34. | :52:36.
matter how good the races, you will have at least one bad patch and the | :52:37. | :52:43.
thing is to find anything, something, to focus on and believe | :52:44. | :52:46.
you will come out at the other side and feel better and regain momentum. | :52:47. | :52:53.
Any a little technique you can think of to help stay in that moment. The | :52:54. | :53:00.
track specialist, the 10,000 metre man, is the one giving chase here. | :53:01. | :53:09.
That has confused me a bit, that is Meucci. He has managed to find a | :53:10. | :53:17.
little bit extra. Meftah had been leading the chase, but Meucci thinks | :53:18. | :53:26.
he has enough here. After finishing in sixth in the 10,000m on Wednesday | :53:27. | :53:32.
night, he looks good, doesn't he? My question really was that it | :53:33. | :53:35.
Chabowski has slowed, the group haven't picked it up that much, and | :53:36. | :53:42.
somebody needs to pick it up. If he could run last ten kilometres of | :53:43. | :53:50.
anything under 31 minutes, maybe 35 or 40 for the last ten K, it is a | :53:51. | :53:56.
big as, but he could close the gap. It Chabowski keeps slowing, it will | :53:57. | :54:06.
make his life even easier. Chabowski making the turn, the next time it | :54:07. | :54:10.
will be the finishing line. One lap to go, but it is a big lap. It is | :54:11. | :54:15.
ten kilometres of hard running with a big hill in it and at least one | :54:16. | :54:21.
chasing him down. But the crowds will support him, the crowds will | :54:22. | :54:25.
give him some encouragement, but he is hurting, he is really hurting | :54:26. | :54:30.
now. I think the crowds will support him, but he is spoiling the Swiss | :54:31. | :54:35.
party a little bit. Not getting a huge amount of support. Meucci, when | :54:36. | :54:44.
he ran the 10,000m, he didn't really commit or take it on at any point, | :54:45. | :54:49.
so I wonder if this has been his main target all along. We saw women | :54:50. | :55:01.
do the same, but I don't think the marathon was that same focus, but | :55:02. | :55:06.
Meucci didn't take on Mo Farah at any point in that race but he seems | :55:07. | :55:13.
to be committing to this. Former medallist at 10,000m in the last | :55:14. | :55:16.
championship, running himself into a medal position here in the marathon. | :55:17. | :55:20.
championship, running himself into a medal position Paula said he didn't | :55:21. | :55:24.
commit too much to the 10,000m and that is absolutely true. As we look | :55:25. | :55:31.
at Guerra, Shegumo of Poland, Meftah of France and then a gap to Viktor | :55:32. | :55:35.
Rothlin, who is really going through a bad patch at this point. And once | :55:36. | :55:41.
again, upfront, a Polish athlete. A Polish athlete in that chasing | :55:42. | :55:47.
group. Meucci, the Italian. This crowd really responding and giving | :55:48. | :55:51.
him a great farewell run for Viktor Rothlin, who has been a of Swiss | :55:52. | :55:56.
athletics. We watch Meucci, the former medallist at the 10,000m, can | :55:57. | :56:02.
he stepped up to the marathon. A gap of 41 seconds. I would like to see | :56:03. | :56:08.
how the leader is coping with this late stage, because he lived to be | :56:09. | :56:16.
struggling. That is about 20 seconds that Meucci has picked off in the | :56:17. | :56:22.
last mile or so. Certainly the last couple of kilometres. This is where | :56:23. | :56:26.
Jablonski will get a very good view -- Chabowski. They run alongside the | :56:27. | :56:34.
lake, they do a sharp turnaround, and he will see that Meucci is | :56:35. | :56:37.
closing the gap and he is struggling now, dropping his arms, maybe | :56:38. | :56:42.
getting cramp. The fatigue is really starting to build. I didn't | :56:43. | :56:49.
understand why he was going so hard when he did go so hard. A bit of a | :56:50. | :56:54.
lack of experience and maybe when he got away, he thought, I am going to | :56:55. | :57:00.
go over it, and he is paying for it, and he is paying for it. Real | :57:01. | :57:02.
tiredness setting in now for Chabowski Poland. A brave effort to | :57:03. | :57:07.
try and win this race. He still has a 44 second gap, working hard to try | :57:08. | :57:15.
to take a medal, but there is a chaser in the form of Daniele Meucci | :57:16. | :57:24.
of Italy. We can see Chabowski really working hard here, the strain | :57:25. | :57:29.
on his face shows everything. It is a hard one. The distance is catching | :57:30. | :57:34.
him. And the athlete behind is catching him to. And remember, he | :57:35. | :57:42.
knows, he has been up it three times, it is not long before he has | :57:43. | :57:47.
to have that incline, can he cope with it this time and therefore the | :57:48. | :57:55.
first time, in the shop, Daniele Meucci of Italy, running so well. | :57:56. | :58:00.
And there you begin to wonder whether the long-time leader, will | :58:01. | :58:06.
he surrendered the lead fairly soon mad I wonder if he will get a | :58:07. | :58:12.
medal? He is looking in a bad way and there is a strong group coming, | :58:13. | :58:17.
and his team-mate, Shegumo, is in there, and Meftah. That is getting | :58:18. | :58:25.
interesting, this is what makes the drama of the marathon. This is going | :58:26. | :58:29.
to be a hard knock, mentally, when he sees how much the gap has closed, | :58:30. | :58:35.
just in that short section of three or four kilometres. He can see they | :58:36. | :58:39.
are moving clearly much better than him and it will be hard to take. I | :58:40. | :58:45.
am sorry to say, I don't think it is going to be too long before he loses | :58:46. | :58:50.
that lead. I was making the point earlier, Shegumo beat Chabowski in | :58:51. | :58:54.
the marathon in Poland earlier in the season. He is now in third | :58:55. | :59:00.
place. Guerra are Spain tried to hang onto as much as he possibly | :59:01. | :59:07.
can. And Meftah of France, with Rothlin really struggling now. These | :59:08. | :59:13.
are the ones you think are contesting the medals and it may be | :59:14. | :59:19.
that these three catch Chabowski. I wouldn't be surprised, Chabowski | :59:20. | :59:22.
looks like he is really struggling. Meucci has timed this well. Rothlin | :59:23. | :59:28.
is still keeping strong, he will stay strong, he probably just | :59:29. | :59:31.
doesn't have it in the legs anymore. 39 years of age and he so | :59:32. | :59:37.
hoped he could go out with a medal here. Seven. He may find himself | :59:38. | :59:41.
just one or two places shy of that, but still some running to be done | :59:42. | :59:49.
here. But there is some experienced ahead of him. Meucci looks as though | :59:50. | :59:55.
he has timed his effort well. They know what they are doing. And in | :59:56. | :00:00.
their bid to try and win a medal, you never know, one of them might | :00:01. | :00:03.
fall apart a little bit, so Rothlin will keep going and try and stay | :00:04. | :00:16.
strong. That is a big gap now and all of them avoiding the mist on | :00:17. | :00:21.
this lap. I'm not sure if Chabowski went through there. But these guys | :00:22. | :00:24.
have got real intent and know they have a chance of a medal. They're | :00:25. | :00:29.
watching Meucci give chase for the gold. But they must have seen | :00:30. | :00:34.
Chabowski, this three must think I can catch him and we still have a | :00:35. | :00:41.
chance of a medal. Yes and I'm sure they will be getting information | :00:42. | :00:44.
from team officials on the course who will be helping just to relay | :00:45. | :00:49.
about the size of the gap and about how tired Chabowski is looking. Now | :00:50. | :00:54.
you can see Meucci has him in his sights. I think your right, it won't | :00:55. | :01:01.
be long at all. I fear as to whether Chabowski is going to complete this | :01:02. | :01:08.
last lap. That is a man who is falling apart. Too much too soon, | :01:09. | :01:14.
too fast, too hard. A misjudgment from the Polish athlete and it is a | :01:15. | :01:19.
shame when it happens, but it is a feature of marathon running. You | :01:20. | :01:23.
have to be patient and know your limitations. Meucci, this is only | :01:24. | :01:29.
his third marathon, but he has got huge experience and he knows, or he | :01:30. | :01:33.
knew that pace that Chabowski was setting was something that he | :01:34. | :01:38.
couldn't go in that early stage. He looks good and strong. They have got | :01:39. | :01:44.
a great background of marathon running the Italians, they know how | :01:45. | :01:49.
to prepare and they have some good coaches. As he now runs along the | :01:50. | :01:57.
street into the centre again and towards that incline, you can sense | :01:58. | :02:01.
that we are going to have a new leader. Guerra and Shegumo and I | :02:02. | :02:09.
would bet there is medals for tleez 3-2. Two of those three will get a | :02:10. | :02:13.
medal. We are looking at a very tired and strained leader. I hope we | :02:14. | :02:19.
are going to be there to see what will be the drama as they turn off | :02:20. | :02:24.
and there is the leader. Really straining, really struggling. He has | :02:25. | :02:29.
made a brave effort. But it wasn't as considered an effort as it's | :02:30. | :02:33.
turned out. He is digging into his shorts. He probably has that drink | :02:34. | :02:40.
in his, the gel in his pocket. But now here comes Danielle Meucci as | :02:41. | :02:55.
they come off the Munster Platz. And we will see some drama. Daniele | :02:56. | :03:06.
Meucci powers past him and Dan ye Meucci for the first time hits the | :03:07. | :03:11.
front. Comes across the river Limmat and look at how quickly that gap has | :03:12. | :03:15.
opened. He will start thinking quickly about the hill. You have got | :03:16. | :03:22.
to tackle it now, Dan ye, iele, you have got to work at it and the gold | :03:23. | :03:27.
could be won in the next few minutes. Because he is still running | :03:28. | :03:35.
strongly in the shadow of Gross Munster, the Italian hits the front | :03:36. | :03:39.
and the crowds are responding. This is a great piece of drama. This what | :03:40. | :03:47.
is marathon running is about. Gauging your effort, taking your | :03:48. | :03:53.
time. Look how quickly that gap is opening and he will struggle to get | :03:54. | :03:57.
a medal at all. He is very tired. You could see he was struggling also | :03:58. | :04:03.
with a stitch and his legs have gone. I do feel for how he is going | :04:04. | :04:06.
to get up this hill this time and get down it as well. Maybe Shegumo | :04:07. | :04:19.
will give him some encouragement, because they have a chance in the | :04:20. | :04:23.
team event. Rothlin is struggling, because he has been passed by a | :04:24. | :04:35.
Russian as well. Reunkov has timed his effort well. You always look for | :04:36. | :04:39.
somebody coming from a long way back. Meucci is still a burgeoning | :04:40. | :04:52.
marathon career. He went to New York and ran the half marathon and he | :04:53. | :04:56.
went back last year to New York. He was the first European to finish in | :04:57. | :05:06.
last year's New York marathon. That maybe gave an indication and here | :05:07. | :05:10.
looking very strong and confident and you can't see anybody catching | :05:11. | :05:15.
him. The only question is the hill. Will he cope with the hill OK? Just | :05:16. | :05:31.
grim grimacing a bit. He looked relaxed. Maybe it was a bit of sweat | :05:32. | :05:35.
in his eyes and maybe it was the sun in his eyes. Or maybe he got a sugar | :05:36. | :05:41.
rush as he had taken his drink there. But he is very accomplished | :05:42. | :05:46.
over the tougher courses like in New York and I think that will stand him | :05:47. | :05:51.
in good stead now as he attacks this hill. He seems to be moving away | :05:52. | :05:56.
from the field and the biggest danger is from Reunkov who is coming | :05:57. | :06:02.
through. Shegumo there just moving much better. He will pass his team | :06:03. | :06:12.
mate quickly. The former Ethiopian. Now competing for Poland. He won the | :06:13. | :06:20.
Lodge marathon in April. His last marathon before this. He has timed | :06:21. | :06:28.
his effort well here. On that day, he beat Chabowski, Chabowski | :06:29. | :06:35.
finished fifth. But he has got it horribly wrong. If he does finish in | :06:36. | :06:40.
the top five, if he finishes at all. He is almost coming to a stop. I | :06:41. | :06:46.
can't see him finishing this race. There he stops. As I said that, the | :06:47. | :06:50.
hill finally too much for him. He has run his race and that is what | :06:51. | :06:57.
happens. I know we were saying, Brendan, your old coach's saying, | :06:58. | :07:06.
when you run out of energy, it just goes completely and there is nothing | :07:07. | :07:09.
you can do. He has just stepped to one side. It won't help his team. | :07:10. | :07:14.
That is what I was about to say. He steps aside as the other Polish | :07:15. | :07:20.
runner comes past and so no interest in battling on now he is no longer | :07:21. | :07:29.
the first Polish runner. But he is in a bad way. The most significant | :07:30. | :07:35.
thing would be trying to absorb the impact coming down the hill. I'm not | :07:36. | :07:41.
sure his leg would have taken that. A seriously brave effort to try and | :07:42. | :07:46.
win the race by Chabowski of Poe last night and -- Poland. Now Meucci | :07:47. | :07:54.
has to conserve his energy. He looked a bit tired before, now he is | :07:55. | :07:59.
relaxing into the position. He has counted ate couple of times. -- | :08:00. | :08:03.
counted it a couple of times. He knows in his mind he knows in his | :08:04. | :08:12.
approach, as the Shegumo, the former Ethiopian athlete, who went to | :08:13. | :08:17.
Poland for the world youth Championships and represented | :08:18. | :08:21.
Ethiopia in the 400 metres. He decided to stay there. He has stayed | :08:22. | :08:27.
there since and worked through to marathon. He won two marathons in | :08:28. | :08:32.
Poland last year and he has decided that Chabowski wasn't going to have | :08:33. | :08:36.
the beating of himment he allowed him to go and he is in second place | :08:37. | :08:40.
now. So Poland, while having an effort to tray and win the gold look | :08:41. | :08:45.
as though the Polish team will be rewarded with a medal and Shegumo is | :08:46. | :08:56.
running himself into a medal position and followed give Guerra. | :08:57. | :09:00.
There they are. The charging Russian issing closing the gap. Reunkov is, | :09:01. | :09:08.
a while ago he was 40 seconds behind the leader. I'm not sure he is 40 | :09:09. | :09:11.
seconds behind now. It will be the leader. I'm not sure he is 40 | :09:12. | :09:16.
interesting. Reunkov is a man who we need to keep an eye on. He is in | :09:17. | :09:22.
fourth and he can see Guerra, the local director is looking at | :09:23. | :09:29.
Rothlin. But Rune koifs passing people all the time. I wonder if he | :09:30. | :09:36.
can put in a good hill and close the gap. Shegumo working hard up the | :09:37. | :09:39.
hill. It is tough and hard to maintain rift m. -- rhythm. Here is | :09:40. | :09:50.
the Russian eating up the ground. Guerra attacking the hill. I think | :09:51. | :09:53.
he is taking yards out of the men Guerra attacking the hill. I think | :09:54. | :10:03.
front of him. Just look how much he has taken out of him in that climb. | :10:04. | :10:09.
Rothlin is closing down. He has, as we talked about, the experience of | :10:10. | :10:14.
the hill. He has put this hill to suit him. But Reunkov is looking | :10:15. | :10:18.
that much stronger up the hill. There is the second placed Shegumo | :10:19. | :10:25.
of Poland. Another climb to face before you can, and he is struggling | :10:26. | :10:31.
as well. He has got lots of tapes on his legs. Maybe he has been | :10:32. | :10:34.
suffering from some kind of injury. But he is finding this bit tough | :10:35. | :10:40.
too. Steve, you picked out the Russian. As we watch the leader at | :10:41. | :10:46.
the highest point. Relief for Daniele Meucci, because now it is | :10:47. | :10:51.
steady and he can relax. Then it is level along the lakeside. Shegumo is | :10:52. | :10:56.
now in that area where the energy is running out. He is paying for his | :10:57. | :11:00.
effort too. The Meucci has got a lead now and it is at least 25 | :11:01. | :11:08.
seconds or more. Shegumo, well, a few minutes ago we were giving him | :11:09. | :11:13.
the silver medal. Now, he is going through to a point will he get a | :11:14. | :11:19.
medal at all, as he reaches the highest point. He is 39 seconds | :11:20. | :11:25.
behind the leader. And there he is being chased by Guerra, the first | :11:26. | :11:30.
European to finish in the World Championships last year and then the | :11:31. | :11:35.
Russian, Reunkov, moving well. Moving better than anyone at this | :11:36. | :11:39.
point. Closing those gaps. A couple of seconds from a medal. A couple of | :11:40. | :11:45.
seconds from a silver medal. 38 seconds and more from a gold medal | :11:46. | :11:52.
as the gold medal favourite, who helped design this course, Viktor | :11:53. | :11:58.
Rothlin comes across the highest part of the course, being chased by | :11:59. | :12:05.
Meftah of France. Still things to happen in the late stages of this | :12:06. | :12:09.
marathon. Meucci, that is a good lead and it looks as though it is | :12:10. | :12:16.
one he is consolidating. If he can negotiate himself down the hill, | :12:17. | :12:21.
without doing too much damage to the quads. He looks OK to me. Working | :12:22. | :12:25.
hard, but you should be at this stage. He will just have two or | :12:26. | :12:33.
three kilometres to go. When he gets to the bottom of the hill, he will | :12:34. | :12:37.
see the finish line and turn away and go left along the lake. But this | :12:38. | :12:44.
is still a race for the minor medals here. Shegumo will be enjoying this | :12:45. | :12:52.
down hill section. He certainly didn't enjoy the uphill section. And | :12:53. | :13:01.
Guerra and Reunkov not far away. Italy first, Poland second, Spain | :13:02. | :13:08.
third and Russia very close behind in fourth. Just trying to stay | :13:09. | :13:13.
relaxed as much as he can. It hurts the leg when you're this tired and | :13:14. | :13:21.
running down hill. I think he needs to do, he needs to relax as much as | :13:22. | :13:26.
possible. But it is very hard to do when your legs are fatigued, | :13:27. | :13:32.
different areas of your muscles are cramping up and sliding in your | :13:33. | :13:37.
shoes so, the feet are sliding down and people get bruised toe nails and | :13:38. | :13:45.
finish with bleeding toe nails sometimes. That is a significant gap | :13:46. | :13:54.
with not too far to go. Shegumo of Poland has been running for Poland | :13:55. | :13:59.
for eleven years now, a former Ethiopian as Brendan was saying. And | :14:00. | :14:04.
now looks as though he is running strong again. But is he going to | :14:05. | :14:12.
come under pressure with Guerra and Reunkov trying to give chase. There | :14:13. | :14:16.
is the leader. Almost at the bottom of the hill. He will take a left | :14:17. | :14:19.
hand turn. If he looks ahead he will be able to see the finish line and | :14:20. | :14:23.
that will await him in about ten minutes or so. 23.3 kilometres an | :14:24. | :14:31.
hour. That is a good speed. We wouldn't normally talk about hi | :14:32. | :14:36.
speed. You contrast it with the previous laps. Chabowski did the | :14:37. | :14:41.
first lap at 24.5 and slowed down to 22 and so he has picked it up again. | :14:42. | :14:46.
At this stage he is running comfortable and he is probably | :14:47. | :14:49.
relieved that is the last time he has to come down that section. : The | :14:50. | :14:57.
crowd are close on the side of the road and they're cheering him. He | :14:58. | :15:00.
has runned a measured and considered race and he is now, see how close | :15:01. | :15:06.
they are to the runners. It is a great boost after two hours of | :15:07. | :15:22.
running. Not budge further for Shegumo to win: 's first ever medal | :15:23. | :15:27.
in the marathon in the European Championships -- not much further. | :15:28. | :15:31.
He went through a bad patch, he is now beginning to hold it together, | :15:32. | :15:35.
but I wonder, are the medals settled in one, are the medals settled in | :15:36. | :15:40.
one, two, three? Meucci an Shegumo looks settled, but this may change. | :15:41. | :15:52.
The biggest cheer, and well-deserved biggest cheer, is for Viktor Rothlin | :15:53. | :16:00.
of Switzerland, bronze, silver-medallist and then | :16:01. | :16:02.
gold-medallist in the European Championships. Enjoying the last | :16:03. | :16:06.
moment of a great career. He says after today, that is it, he is going | :16:07. | :16:11.
to go climbing in the hills, but not running marathons in the hills | :16:12. | :16:16.
anymore. And very, very tough character, though, and he is hanging | :16:17. | :16:22.
in strongly. It is interesting that he has had a hand in designing it | :16:23. | :16:27.
yet he does not seem comfortable in the downhill section. Meftah is a | :16:28. | :16:31.
much more comfortable downhill runner, he came down the hill with a | :16:32. | :16:40.
significant lead over Meftah and he ended up going past him. The leader, | :16:41. | :16:49.
enjoying, if you can enjoy, these last couple of kilometres, because I | :16:50. | :16:54.
think he must now be realising that he has got it together, he is not | :16:55. | :16:59.
going to fall apart, he has got a big enough lead. Shegumo is doing | :17:00. | :17:04.
his best to chase, but although the camera makes it look as though he is | :17:05. | :17:09.
not too far in the distance, he is well away, and I think Meucci, looks | :17:10. | :17:18.
strong, moving nicely, undoubtedly tired and undoubtedly hurting, and | :17:19. | :17:22.
the pace has dropped quite significantly in terms of this race. | :17:23. | :17:26.
I thought we might have been heading close to the championship record of | :17:27. | :17:36.
2:10 .31, but the heat, the fast-paced set in the middle of the | :17:37. | :17:41.
race by Chabowski, it has taken its toll. Meucci is the one who has | :17:42. | :17:48.
judged it well and is heading for gold. He has judged it brilliantly | :17:49. | :17:52.
and I am really pleased for this event. The championships themselves, | :17:53. | :17:56.
we have had sometimes sparse attendances, but we have had record | :17:57. | :18:01.
crowds here, massive crowds, supporting the men's marathon on a | :18:02. | :18:04.
beautiful day. And Steve said supporting the men's marathon on a | :18:05. | :18:07.
beautiful day. earlier, he could be enjoying this part of the race. | :18:08. | :18:11.
Paula, you are the only one here who knows about that. Can you enjoy the | :18:12. | :18:18.
last couple of miles of marathon if you are winning? When you are | :18:19. | :18:22.
winning, you can enjoy it, but you cannot allow your mind to think you | :18:23. | :18:28.
have already won it. So, yes, probably when he gets information at | :18:29. | :18:33.
the next drinks station, the team officials will give him information | :18:34. | :18:36.
on the gap, but it is still going to hurt. It'll just help him take the | :18:37. | :18:40.
hurt a little better and keep working hard to the finish. I am | :18:41. | :18:48.
sure he will still take a few moments to say, remember this, | :18:49. | :18:51.
because when it gets tough in training and erases in the future, | :18:52. | :18:56.
you had to summon up again the feeling you have here. So it is not | :18:57. | :19:01.
enjoying it, it is feeling the experience, rather than enjoying it. | :19:02. | :19:07.
Take the memories, you can enjoy them afterwards, but right now, he | :19:08. | :19:11.
will not be enjoying the feeling too much. But it will give him extra | :19:12. | :19:16.
energy, I think. As you saw with Christelle Daunay yesterday, as she | :19:17. | :19:20.
got that gap and moved away, she got or other spring in her step. Changes | :19:21. | :19:29.
further down. Reunkov has gone into third place. The Russian may well | :19:30. | :19:39.
now have silver in his sights. He will try and chase Shegumo. | :19:40. | :19:50.
It is not going to be a course record, probably closer to 2:12, to | :19:51. | :20:01.
be honest, but that is irrelevant. He could still get a personal best, | :20:02. | :20:06.
but what about the silver medal? Shegumo looks like he is really | :20:07. | :20:12.
hurting. Guerra watching as sha bunk of a -- Shegumo moves away. The | :20:13. | :20:28.
Russian has come on strongly, Shegumo looks as though he is | :20:29. | :20:32.
struggling as well and Reunkov, who has been as strong as anyone in the | :20:33. | :20:39.
last section, he has got a bronze, could he get silver? Guerra, having | :20:40. | :20:45.
run so well, now in fourth place, one minute behind the leader and | :20:46. | :20:49.
losing yards all the way to Reunkov. As they turn into the park, | :20:50. | :20:55.
the sheltered area alongside the lake. On normal days, very, very | :20:56. | :20:59.
pleasant area and on days like today, we just had Paula explaining | :21:00. | :21:10.
how Daniel Meucci -- Daniele Meucci will not be enjoying this, but will | :21:11. | :21:16.
be savouring the experience. He ran well in New York, he won well in | :21:17. | :21:20.
Rome and he is on his way to a glorious victory in the European | :21:21. | :21:26.
Championship. A resurgence by Viktor Rothlin, running so strong, as he | :21:27. | :21:32.
always does, in the later stages. And there, as the helicopter shows | :21:33. | :21:39.
us, at least running alongside the lake -- athletes running alongside | :21:40. | :21:47.
the lake. He is starting to look to the side now, I am not sure if he is | :21:48. | :21:52.
looking for friends or anything else. There is no danger for him, | :21:53. | :22:00.
but has Reunkov the Russian got enough time to catch Shegumo of | :22:01. | :22:07.
Poland ahead of him? He may not take anything on board. Looking for his | :22:08. | :22:13.
table. I think he has grabbed one last little bit of sustenance for | :22:14. | :22:20.
this last few minutes of running, Shegumo looks tired, but does he | :22:21. | :22:23.
have enough room to hang on? He looks very tired but -- to me, and | :22:24. | :22:33.
Reunkov must be about ten seconds behind him. He has a chance here. | :22:34. | :22:42.
You saw Christel do -- Christelle Daunay come through here, she ran | :22:43. | :22:47.
the corners very well, it is about conserving energy and it is hard to | :22:48. | :22:53.
do it on tired legs. The purple line doesn't actually show the best route | :22:54. | :22:57.
to take, she was very good at doing it and we will see if Reunkov can do | :22:58. | :23:03.
that and if he can see that Shegumo is tiring. Moving well, bouncing | :23:04. | :23:08.
along, heading towards the gold medal, Daniele Meucci. It is only | :23:09. | :23:14.
his third marathon. That clock is ticking away but he has a good | :23:15. | :23:17.
chance of running a new personal best here. He is a very, very good | :23:18. | :23:24.
track athlete and he has made a good move up to the roads. A medallist in | :23:25. | :23:29.
these European Championships over 10,000m in the previous two | :23:30. | :23:34.
championships, he was in six on Wednesday night against Mo Farah and | :23:35. | :23:41.
Andy Vernon, but doesn't he look good now? I am sure as he went | :23:42. | :23:44.
through the one kilometre to go mark, he calculated where his | :23:45. | :23:49.
personal best was and roughly how long he had to get there. If nothing | :23:50. | :23:58.
else, it keeps his had focused -- had focused on something. I was | :23:59. | :24:01.
wrong when I said yesterday that Daunay would not pick up a flag, but | :24:02. | :24:05.
if he is going for a personal flat at a delete best, I doubt he will -- | :24:06. | :24:16.
a personal best, I doubt he will. We have seen athletes coming back and | :24:17. | :24:19.
trying to close the gap, we are seeing Reunkov of Russia running | :24:20. | :24:27.
through. There is second placed, Shegumo, representing Poland. And | :24:28. | :24:32.
the leader, when he comes around this corner, will have the finish, | :24:33. | :24:37.
as he looks across the lake, in his sights. Two hours and nine minutes | :24:38. | :24:44.
on the clock so far. We go back to the leader, running along the lake | :24:45. | :24:49.
side. Fantastic crowd supporting him, including those on the right | :24:50. | :24:54.
hand side looking at the big screen. Daniele Meucci of Italy, | :24:55. | :24:58.
bronze-medallist in 2010 in the European 10,000m. Silver-medallist | :24:59. | :25:08.
in 2012. And now, a third effort in the European Championships and on | :25:09. | :25:11.
his way to a gold medal in the marathon for Italy. In second place, | :25:12. | :25:19.
at the moment, should go mile of Poland -- Shegumo of Poland. And as | :25:20. | :25:24.
we see Daniele Meucci come towards the finishing line, he will be the | :25:25. | :25:31.
third Italian athlete to win a gold medal in the marathon. Maldini and | :25:32. | :25:42.
Bordin both went on to become Olympic champions. He says he wants | :25:43. | :25:47.
the cheers and he deserves it. The Italian flag, let's see if he grabs | :25:48. | :25:54.
it. Yes, he does. He has a chance of a personal best as well. He puts the | :25:55. | :26:00.
flag in one hand, waves with the other. Accepting the adulation of | :26:01. | :26:05.
the huge crowds here at the end of a marathon. Daniele Meucci of Italy is | :26:06. | :26:09.
going to be the European champion in only his third marathon. A well | :26:10. | :26:14.
judged race, got his tactics perfectly right on the day. It is | :26:15. | :26:19.
gold for Italy, a new personal best, just outside two hours and 11 | :26:20. | :26:25.
minutes. What a great run from Meucci. Second place, Shegumo of | :26:26. | :26:33.
Poland, looking tired, still just got enough in the legs to hang onto | :26:34. | :26:38.
the silver medal. Reunkov of Russia charging behind, but he couldn't | :26:39. | :26:44.
quite catch him, didn't have enough time. There was a long-time leader | :26:45. | :26:51.
from Poland, Schabowski, looked like he might win a medal for a long time | :26:52. | :26:56.
and then he fell apart in the last ten kilometres and it was left to | :26:57. | :27:01.
his team-mate, who finds a sprint at the end, and Shegumo with a great, | :27:02. | :27:06.
strong finish, representing Poland. He will take the silver medal. His | :27:07. | :27:15.
arms go up, well done to him. And there was a late charge from Reunkov | :27:16. | :27:20.
of Russia, which has rewarded him with a bronze medal. So strong on | :27:21. | :27:25.
the hills, and look how much that means to him, congratulations to | :27:26. | :27:30.
Reunkov, as he crosses the line in just outside two hours and 12 | :27:31. | :27:34.
minutes. Some tired athletes now, a tough day, tough course. Lovely | :27:35. | :27:41.
weather to watch, not great weather, necessarily, for running | :27:42. | :27:45.
the marathon. Guerra comes in in fourth place, perhaps the worst | :27:46. | :27:51.
place to finish in a marathon. And just behind him, I think we are | :27:52. | :27:56.
going to hear a great cheer, the man who started this race, -- as one of | :27:57. | :28:05.
the great hopes for Switzerland. It wasn't to be for Viktor Rothlin. | :28:06. | :28:10.
There he is. He is a great hero and he is getting a great reception. He | :28:11. | :28:16.
has been a great champion, he has run a terrific race and that is the | :28:17. | :28:20.
end of a great career. He now says he will take to the hills on foot | :28:21. | :28:25.
and climbing as well. And Meftah of France finishing in a good place to. | :28:26. | :28:34.
And that is it for one of Switzerland's real sporting heroes. | :28:35. | :28:38.
Well done to Viktor Rothlin, that was a very good performance. 2:13, | :28:39. | :28:45.
he is not going to be unhappy with his effort. Pitt Place, he probably | :28:46. | :28:50.
expected more, but there is a very emotional man, who has held his | :28:51. | :28:53.
country together in distance running for many years, and enjoyed many | :28:54. | :28:59.
moments in his career, as the Polish athlete becomes the first poll to | :29:00. | :29:05.
get a medal in the marathon at the European Championships. And a tired | :29:06. | :29:11.
man there, but champion. This is a great performance from Daniele | :29:12. | :29:13.
Meucci and watch for him in the future, he has got the credentials. | :29:14. | :29:17.
The Italians know how to do it, I will be looking at him in a couple | :29:18. | :29:27.
of years' time in Rio. JONATHAN EDWARDS: The second gold of | :29:28. | :29:39.
these championships, but also Shegumo performing Brenchley. | :29:40. | :29:43.
A great performance by the Swiss athlete and it was great to see the | :29:44. | :29:46.
celebration, even though he was only fifth. He announced it would be his | :29:47. | :29:55.
farewell race, he is 39, and he did help plan the cause and hung in | :29:56. | :29:59.
there. He is a very tough runner and always makes late surges at the end | :30:00. | :30:03.
of the race and he did that and he went through a rough patch, but | :30:04. | :30:06.
managed to hold on and I'm sure the crowd helped him. People must wonder | :30:07. | :30:13.
if it is appropriate for somebody who is running in course to design | :30:14. | :30:18.
the course. They would look to a marathon runner to give some input. | :30:19. | :30:24.
We have input into design of the kit and shoes. I think if you're hosting | :30:25. | :30:29.
a marathon, I think fair enough you're allowed to design the course | :30:30. | :30:33.
and have certain things in it that help your home athlete and the | :30:34. | :30:38.
things they like to run on. He was savouring that moment with the flag. | :30:39. | :30:44.
But Daniele Meucci judged that race perfectly and ran very well to run a | :30:45. | :30:50.
perfect best on that course. So the hills weren't too bad, Brendan. It | :30:51. | :30:58.
was a classic marathon race, the guy broke away, Chabowski, he looked | :30:59. | :31:02.
like he was running well and the group gathered and the class athlete | :31:03. | :31:09.
in terms of 10,000 metre running, Meucci, came out. H ehas been | :31:10. | :31:15.
prepare ing for the marathon. They have done that the in past, used the | :31:16. | :31:22.
10,000 metres to build up for it. The success is I have persuaded | :31:23. | :31:28.
Paula it with auz hilly course! Chabowski went out from 10 | :31:29. | :31:32.
kilometres, in cycling, you will roll your eyes here, they have | :31:33. | :31:38.
awards for the rider who animates a race. Was that a glorious failure, | :31:39. | :31:45.
or was he stupid? He wasn't stupid. I don't know what glorious an mace | :31:46. | :31:56.
means. It doesn't stupid, but it was a bit silly. He didn't know his own | :31:57. | :32:01.
body well enough and he gt carried away. And then by that stage as he | :32:02. | :32:07.
went to negotiate the hill for the last time he knew his legs had gone | :32:08. | :32:11.
and he was probably thinking ahead to how was he going to get down the | :32:12. | :32:16.
hill. On tired legs that is the more significant thing is absorbing the | :32:17. | :32:22.
impact. In terms of judging effort, I'm going to go back to cycling. | :32:23. | :32:31.
They have the power meters and heart rates, in term of judging a race, | :32:32. | :32:37.
how do you do that in a marathon. The best way is to run even pace. | :32:38. | :32:41.
But you have a course which has a difficult point in it. You're also | :32:42. | :32:45.
in the Championship and sometimes the athletes do what we saw, break | :32:46. | :32:50.
away and stay away. Other time they break away and come back. That is | :32:51. | :32:54.
the drama of the marathon. You can't script it, it is live sport, we have | :32:55. | :33:00.
seen many times athletes break away and minute and -- win and many times | :33:01. | :33:08.
they have been caught. I thought the crowds were phenomenal. We talked of | :33:09. | :33:18.
Jonathan's analogy with cycling. It was similar in some parts with the | :33:19. | :33:24.
streets being narrow and the crowd being there. It was similar to the | :33:25. | :33:29.
climbs in the Tour de France. But I think they do, you knee from your | :33:30. | :33:33.
training -- you know from your training thousand judge your effort | :33:34. | :33:38.
and how you would feel from the long runs and I think just maybe he | :33:39. | :33:43.
misjudged quite how much he had in his legs at the start of race when | :33:44. | :33:48.
he was committing to those fast sections. We will see the man who | :33:49. | :34:00.
heads the rankings and that is Mo Farah. There goes Mo Farah. It is | :34:01. | :34:14.
Farah now. When he starts to kick. He is kicking again. There will be a | :34:15. | :34:22.
big surge from Farah. He is back. That was only my first 10K since | :34:23. | :34:29.
Moscow. It felt weird at times. At times I didn't know where I was. You | :34:30. | :34:33.
lose touch a bit. But after a while I got going. When you come to those | :34:34. | :34:39.
last few laps, do you doubt yourself, because you haven't done | :34:40. | :34:43.
it for a while? At types it was -- times it was how am I looking, who | :34:44. | :34:47.
is around and then at the last bell I know I'm fast enough to win. I had | :34:48. | :34:52.
to dig in and try and run a decent time. Your reaction was kind of a | :34:53. | :34:59.
mixture of delight and relief. Only three weeks ago I couldn't do | :35:00. | :35:02.
anything. I was no Commonwealth Games and maybe no Europeans, I was | :35:03. | :35:07.
in my head, the season is done to. Turn around and come out here and | :35:08. | :35:11.
win meant so much to me. It has been up and down and only my family and | :35:12. | :35:16.
close people will know what that feels like. Sometimes when things | :35:17. | :35:19.
are going well and it is all good, but when things are not going so | :35:20. | :35:26.
well, that is hard times. Gold again for Farah. He joins a list of people | :35:27. | :35:32.
who have won this title on more than one occasion. Now it is 5K duty and | :35:33. | :35:39.
the double in the European Championship, which hasn't been done | :35:40. | :35:42.
before. Is history important to you? Yes, in terms of my career I would | :35:43. | :35:48.
like to be known as somebody who has made the country proud and collected | :35:49. | :35:53.
as many medals. I love getting on the podium and hearing the national | :35:54. | :35:59.
anthem. Winning the 10K will give me big confidence and hopefully I will | :36:00. | :36:03.
be ready for the 5K. It won't be easy, but I will go out and give | :36:04. | :36:09.
110%. Mentally that race gave me a good confidence. That was Mo taking | :36:10. | :36:17.
the 10,000, can he do the double as he did in Barcelona? Brendan, it | :36:18. | :36:26.
wasn't vintage Mo, is he vulnerable. Yes, but we know why, he has had an | :36:27. | :36:31.
illness. That was only his second race of the year and he wasn't as | :36:32. | :36:36.
impressive in the last lap as he has been in the last few years. But he | :36:37. | :36:40.
did collect another gold. Here today he has got every chance of | :36:41. | :36:46.
collecting another gold and one of his conternds -- contenders could be | :36:47. | :36:51.
Andy Vernon and that would be tremendous. But I think Mo, he said | :36:52. | :36:54.
there, he has gained confidence from that, and he was lacking in | :36:55. | :36:57.
confidence. You know that, Paula, you have been talking to him. Andy | :36:58. | :37:05.
Vernon ran well, but an indication of the shape Mo was in that he | :37:06. | :37:09.
couldn't get rid of Andy the way he would have done a couple of years. | :37:10. | :37:13.
Mo has been struggling for confidence this year and he was low | :37:14. | :37:18.
coming into the Championships and I know he had a big scare with the | :37:19. | :37:23.
illness. But I was surprised how much that knocked him back, because | :37:24. | :37:27.
his training has been good. So he needed to get out and race well. | :37:28. | :37:31.
That 10,000 will have brought him on. But it gave Andy Vernon | :37:32. | :37:37.
confidence. He was almost closing that last lap as fast as Mo did. He | :37:38. | :37:44.
gone sboo the 5K, thinking, hey, I'm running better than I think and I | :37:45. | :37:49.
have a better chance than I thought. And stung by perceived criticism, | :37:50. | :37:55.
almost comes here feeling he has a bit to prove. Anything that | :37:56. | :38:00.
generates that sort of desire in you, you take it. If he has | :38:01. | :38:03.
criticism, he says I will show them. That has fired up many athletes over | :38:04. | :38:07.
history. They have used what they can to fire themselves up to get | :38:08. | :38:11.
ready to do what they have had to do. I was talking to Andy and we | :38:12. | :38:18.
were talking about the 10,000 he said, for the first time, I'm | :38:19. | :38:23.
thinking about how who beat Mo Farah. That is what confidence does. | :38:24. | :38:29.
He is running in the race and in the last he has been an on receiverer of | :38:30. | :38:36.
Mo Farah. -- observer of Mo Farah. Now it is a super Saturday get | :38:37. | :38:41.
together. Greg Rutherford goes in the men's long jump. Here is a story | :38:42. | :38:54.
on him. Two years ago in London, Greg Rutherford became the Olympic | :38:55. | :38:58.
champion. But the fairy tale didn't last. The following year brought | :38:59. | :39:04.
about a change of coach a loss of sponsorship and injury in the build | :39:05. | :39:09.
up to the Moscow World Championships. But Greg has shown | :39:10. | :39:13.
the ability to turn things around and this sum irbroke the British | :39:14. | :39:18.
record -- summer broke the British record in America and then brought | :39:19. | :39:22.
home gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Oh, look at that! Well | :39:23. | :39:30.
done, Greg. Over the moon, a lot of people had written me off and | :39:31. | :39:35.
thought I was a one hit wonder. But I can prove I can still do it. He | :39:36. | :39:42.
will be looking to take another title here and the main competition | :39:43. | :39:50.
will come from Reif from Germany. Greg's victories may not have come | :39:51. | :39:57.
from record-breaking jumps, but he is a fierce competitor W a fast | :39:58. | :40:01.
track and the right conditions, let's hope we can add another title | :40:02. | :40:06.
to his collection here in the stadium tonight. Greg going for gold | :40:07. | :40:15.
tonight. And in 2006 he got a silver in the Europeans. A turn around year | :40:16. | :40:20.
this year for Greg, I think it has been. With the British record and | :40:21. | :40:24.
the Commonwealth Games title and a big opportunity tonight. Yes, he | :40:25. | :40:27.
felt this year he was coming out with something to prove and I think | :40:28. | :40:31.
that jump in the early spring, although there was the controversy | :40:32. | :40:35.
around it, that did give him a boost to his confidence. He suffered that | :40:36. | :40:39.
niggle coming into the Commonwealth Games and did say he had had a | :40:40. | :40:44.
similar thing leading into his British record jump. So he wasn't | :40:45. | :40:47.
particularly worried. But I still think it was a relief to come out | :40:48. | :40:51.
and perform as he did in the Commonwealth Games and he will come | :40:52. | :40:55.
here, he viewed it as a tougher competition here than the | :40:56. | :40:57.
Commonwealth Games and he has come in prepared for that and probably | :40:58. | :41:03.
significant that Menkov went out. One of the things Steve talked about | :41:04. | :41:09.
was the loss of sponsorship. That must be difficult to deal with for | :41:10. | :41:16.
somebody with an Olympic gold. Yes he didn't take kindly to that. But | :41:17. | :41:20.
you know for him to be Olympic champion and then he had a bad year | :41:21. | :41:24.
and he got criticism and he came back with a British record and a | :41:25. | :41:29.
Commonwealth Games title, so he is now Olympic champion, Commonwealth | :41:30. | :41:32.
Games champion and tonight he could be European champion. That is a | :41:33. | :41:35.
small club and it is a good club for him to be a member of. That will | :41:36. | :41:43.
fire him up. We have the men's 1,500 metres. Chris O'Hare and Charlie | :41:44. | :41:48.
Grice, who qualified well. Yes, they ran with maturity and confidence and | :41:49. | :41:53.
I think for both, they're young athletes, but they showed good | :41:54. | :41:58.
tactical awareness to qualify for the final and they will be looking | :41:59. | :42:05.
for a good run. Watch out for Makisse. Do you think if he leading | :42:06. | :42:10.
he will behave? I think he will. I was sad for him that he got disical | :42:11. | :42:17.
if Ied -- disqualified. I he deserved to be reprimanded, but he | :42:18. | :42:24.
was winning a third title. He had that deprived because of his | :42:25. | :42:30.
stupidity. I know he broke the rules, but I love him, the rebel in | :42:31. | :42:35.
me says come on win it. It would be a great story and a great champion. | :42:36. | :42:41.
Yes let's look at the medal table. Because history in the making. | :42:42. | :42:49.
