Hello and welcome to the first of this year's coverage of the Diamond

:00:48.:00:55.

League on the BBC. It is an exciting year of athletics with all roads

:00:56.:00:59.

leading to London. Mo Farah coming to the line. He is going to win the

:01:00.:01:09.

500 metres. A new world record. A win for Usain Bolt, he is back in

:01:10.:01:13.

business. In August the capital city will host the World Championships

:01:14.:01:16.

for the very first time and it will be the last time we ever see Usain

:01:17.:01:21.

Bolt on the track. It will also be Mo Farah's farewell on the track but

:01:22.:01:25.

stars like Laura Muir will be hoping to shine. Whee Kim, week out,

:01:26.:01:29.

athletes will be hoping to prove their form on the Diamond League

:01:30.:01:33.

circuit. Let's kick off with highlights from last night's opening

:01:34.:01:37.

meet in Doha. Hello and welcome to Doha, Qatar,

:01:38.:01:41.

for the first IAAF Diamond League meeting of 2017. We start with a

:01:42.:01:49.

mouthwatering men's 400 metres. Good evening to Stuart Storey. Thank you,

:01:50.:01:54.

Steve. It is a good evening and a good line-up. There are 44 global

:01:55.:02:01.

medallists in this meet. There are 16 Olympic champions. It is a new

:02:02.:02:09.

scoring table. Karabo Sibanda of Botswana, fourth in the Olympic

:02:10.:02:13.

final. He is only 18. Inspired he says by Usain Bolt, as so many

:02:14.:02:19.

others have been. LaShawn Merritt of the United States has won this race

:02:20.:02:28.

three times. A real talent. He won the race in the United States

:02:29.:02:32.

recently in cold conditions. Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas, he has the

:02:33.:02:36.

early-season's fastest time in this field. That was set in grenade.

:02:37.:02:44.

Plainly McKee of the United States, a couple of times world champion.

:02:45.:02:50.

His success has mainly come in the relays -- Tony McQuay.

:02:51.:03:14.

Let's see who really put the pedal down. The Norwood is really up.

:03:15.:03:35.

Maslak is usual going very strong. Steven Gardiner and Cheney McKee

:03:36.:03:40.

making headway. This is going to be very tight. What has the big man got

:03:41.:03:47.

here? Lane three, Steven Gardiner, the fastest man in the field on

:03:48.:03:51.

paper. He leads them home here ahead of LaShawn merit. It was a very,

:03:52.:04:05.

very good race. So, Steven Gardiner really hung on to the form that he

:04:06.:04:11.

showed in Saint George in Grenada with that 44.2 six. Remember,

:04:12.:04:15.

Olympic bronze-medallist in the Olympic four by four last year.

:04:16.:04:22.

LaShawn Merritt has already raised Karabo Sibanda. Steven Gardiner was

:04:23.:04:31.

very clever. He accelerated down the back straight, through 200 metres,

:04:32.:04:36.

down the top end, opened up the lead on LaShawn Merritt. He moves away to

:04:37.:04:45.

try and catch Steven Gardiner. With those long legs, although he was

:04:46.:04:50.

tarring a little bit, he is in superb form. This guy is a real

:04:51.:04:59.

talent. Thomas Rohler of Germany, the

:05:00.:05:02.

Olympic champion. A second round throw.

:05:03.:05:09.

That is a little bit better, beyond the 85-metre line. Still more to

:05:10.:05:18.

come looking at him. Clearly, his coaching staff will be pleased with

:05:19.:05:28.

all of that. 85.52. That is a superb start and he takes the lead.

:05:29.:05:39.

Johannes Vetter a few minutes ago. Just finding his way. He is young in

:05:40.:05:46.

javelin terms. There is plenty of room for improvement. He is loving

:05:47.:05:52.

that one. Look at him. And why not, look at that! Johannes Vetter, well,

:05:53.:06:00.

that is right on the 90-metre line. He had not beaten 90 metres, he was

:06:01.:06:08.

so close in Berlin last year. Has he done it here? Just below. A massive

:06:09.:06:14.

throw from the German. They lie one and two.

:06:15.:06:19.

Holly Bradshaw is in the vault. A first attempt now at 4.5 five.

:06:20.:06:28.

Looking good at the moment. Oh, yes, straight, absolutely superb. She

:06:29.:06:33.

entered the competition at 4.40 five. Several of them went out,

:06:34.:06:42.

finding it a bit difficult. One would expect, on that form, she

:06:43.:06:49.

looks very confident indeed. Twice and Olympic Games finalist, world

:06:50.:06:53.

indoor finalist, she is now based in Cardiff. Chris Baker of Great

:06:54.:06:59.

Britain. That is much better. And indifferent

:07:00.:07:11.

indoor season for him. Little smile from his team-mate Robbie Grabarz.

:07:12.:07:17.

Good clearance, nice rhythm. He had had a bit of an injury problem as

:07:18.:07:21.

well so he is doing very nicely indeed. A smile on his face which

:07:22.:07:26.

will give him a great deal of confidence, that clearance. Now,

:07:27.:07:29.

third attempt from a man who is really up against it now, Olympic

:07:30.:07:42.

champion Thomas Rohler. Let's see what he's got. He is fighting back

:07:43.:07:51.

because that is way beyond 85. Really fast arm. What a fast an he's

:07:52.:07:57.

got. He stomps his left foot down and really works as hard as he can

:07:58.:08:02.

and really wax down there. That is getting closer to the lead, Vetter's

:08:03.:08:11.

lead which stands at 89 metres and 68. Is a personal best for Vetter.

:08:12.:08:16.

Thumbs up it is getting better for the Olympic champion. 88.12, that is

:08:17.:08:27.

good. A season's best for Rohler. The conditions are absolutely

:08:28.:08:33.

superb. Still to come, Genzebe Dibaba makes

:08:34.:08:38.

her 800 metre debut to challenge the great Caster Semenya. It is the

:08:39.:08:42.

Olympic versus the world champion also featuring Britain's Desiree

:08:43.:08:47.

Henry. Ruth Jebet had an amazing 2016.

:08:48.:08:53.

Other Rio medallists join her in the first steeplechase of 2017. As Usain

:08:54.:08:59.

Bolt leads the stage, the race for 100 metre dominance is on. And we

:09:00.:09:04.

will have the best of some top-class field competition. Next on track it

:09:05.:09:11.

is the men's 1500 metres. Doha renowned for producing fast

:09:12.:09:14.

middle-distance races in this season and we have many in this race who

:09:15.:09:18.

will be hoping this year will be no different. Two pacemakers on the

:09:19.:09:26.

outside and then Elijah Manangoi who says he's going to beat the world

:09:27.:09:31.

record this year. Good luck, mate. He is a hugely talented athlete. He

:09:32.:09:36.

was second in the World Championships in Beijing. A

:09:37.:09:41.

disappointing year. He pulled out of Rio after his heats. He had a couple

:09:42.:09:49.

of injuries. Silas Kiplagat we have seen win many Diamond League races.

:09:50.:09:53.

Timothy Cheruiyot who surprised many in Brussels. Ryan Gregson the

:09:54.:10:08.

Australian. Then we have Souleiman who doubled up at the Olympics. And

:10:09.:10:13.

plenty more names to watch out for. A big Kenyan contingent. The men's

:10:14.:10:29.

1500 metres. The pacemakers has been asked to go out at a pretty quick

:10:30.:10:38.

pace for this season. 55 for the first lap. They are jostling and

:10:39.:10:46.

pushing to get to the front. The others are settling further back.

:10:47.:10:52.

Ryan Gregson happy to let everyone get out in front. They are already

:10:53.:11:00.

bunching behind the pacemaker. One or two pushing for some room. It

:11:01.:11:08.

looks fairly steady, if anything. It is early season. Down the back

:11:09.:11:17.

straight. Timothy Cheruiyot the one really following the pacemaker. They

:11:18.:11:24.

are just starting to stretch things little bit. The pacemaker will try

:11:25.:11:29.

and get at least to 1000 metres and then it will probably be Timothy

:11:30.:11:34.

Cheruiyot who's left in front. The athletes have covered 20 metres or

:11:35.:11:45.

so. Coming round to the bowl they will have to do a big, big lap.

:11:46.:11:57.

Silas Kiplagat is trying to get things moving. Bethwell Birgen of

:11:58.:12:09.

Kenya, he is in there. Manangoi it is, down the back straight.

:12:10.:12:15.

Souleiman looks like he is really struggling. Manangoi trying to do

:12:16.:12:23.

what he has done an same any times when he has company. He finishes

:12:24.:12:29.

quick but he looks in a little bit of bother here as Bethwell Birgen

:12:30.:12:32.

comes to attack him on the left-hand side. Kiplagat leads it very late.

:12:33.:12:40.

Kiplagat on the left side. Manangoi hanging in. It is Manangoi who gets

:12:41.:12:45.

it. The sprinters came to the fore at the end. It was Manangoi who gets

:12:46.:12:52.

ahead of Kiplagat. He wins in Doha, he has come second here before.

:12:53.:13:01.

Well, the winning time in the end,, it was close to 3.13. That is not a

:13:02.:13:08.

bad way to start your season, just under 3.30 two. Kiplagat just down.

:13:09.:13:20.

We wed be talking about world leads in general here tonight because this

:13:21.:13:24.

is the first meet and there is very little action indeed.

:13:25.:13:48.

That may be better. That was a good throw. It sailed that the end. That

:13:49.:14:00.

will definitely be a season's best. Thomas Rohler is in second place

:14:01.:14:07.

with 88 metres and 12. And the cheque just waiting to see. A great

:14:08.:14:20.

performance from him. That is ten centimetres below his personal best.

:14:21.:14:24.

We have got a great javelin competition going. Well, indeed. The

:14:25.:14:33.

crowd being incited by the high jumpers. The javelin with Thomas

:14:34.:14:37.

Rohler about to launch that 800 grand javelin away. Have you ever

:14:38.:14:38.

seen such a disdainful look across?! He has a little bit to make up here.

:14:39.:14:55.

He has 88.12, he has 88.96 to make, and that is a big ask. What has he

:14:56.:15:04.

done with that one? Oh, I say! That is a sensational throw, we over 90

:15:05.:15:11.

metres. I mean, he was in 98 metres territory, but that is a sensational

:15:12.:15:18.

throw, unbelievable. We over 90 metres for the Olympic champion. The

:15:19.:15:24.

questions were asked, and the answer was given, 93.90, wow! That put him

:15:25.:15:34.

second on the all-time list behind Zelezny. What a throw.

:15:35.:15:42.

Here is the line-up on the left of your shot, and it features some of

:15:43.:15:51.

the big names, certainly two of them in Caster Semenya and Dibaba. She

:15:52.:16:02.

said she thought 55 seconds, but so many wouldn't have the 55 first lap

:16:03.:16:11.

that was requested by Dibaba. Runs very much more of an even pace to

:16:12.:16:19.

race. There is a former world champion in Eunice Sum of Kenya.

:16:20.:16:32.

Dibaba has had one race over 800 metres this season. Then you have

:16:33.:16:43.

jaws which of Poland. She was fifth in the Olympic final. And then

:16:44.:16:50.

Charlene Lipsey of the United States drawn on the inside. She is

:16:51.:16:56.

obviously improving well. They are looking for 57 for the first lap,

:16:57.:17:00.

and then we will see how Dibaba will go, she wanted the faster first lap,

:17:01.:17:04.

but she hasn't got it. Caster Semenya said no.

:17:05.:17:10.

We will see when they get into the back straight, what sort of line-up

:17:11.:17:19.

we have got. Certainly Caster Semenya looks so comfortable, and

:17:20.:17:25.

Dibaba sitting comfortable it towards the back of that field. She

:17:26.:17:30.

has the speed endurance, the strength endurance, for sure.

:17:31.:17:38.

Chatting earlier on today, she said she was pleased it was 57 not 55,

:17:39.:17:44.

but you can see the reticence of Wambui and Semenya to go with the

:17:45.:17:48.

pace, and you can understand that, 1500 metres runners, they wanted

:17:49.:17:54.

good and hard from the start. Pointless trying to train sprints.

:17:55.:18:00.

But Dibaba has done a 57 at the end of a 1500, so looking forward to

:18:01.:18:07.

this. Jenny Meadows has a lead now, but Semenya is sitting right off

:18:08.:18:15.

this. Wambui is there, and Natoga rule from Jamaica Inn is up there as

:18:16.:18:23.

well. -- from Jamaica is up there as well. Four times the national

:18:24.:18:28.

champion, she is going to find it tough now. How easy does Semenya

:18:29.:18:35.

Luck? She goes past Wambui, Dibaba in third place now, and then Sum,

:18:36.:18:38.

the former world champion, behind her. Semenya looks majestic, so

:18:39.:18:45.

comfortable, as they go with about 130 to go. Wambui putting the pedal

:18:46.:18:51.

down, Dibaba looking for speed and it is not coming. Semenya absolutely

:18:52.:18:59.

flying. Total dominance, Wambui in second place, Sum looks like she

:19:00.:19:04.

will come to third. Semenya wins it, Wambui in second place, Sum in third

:19:05.:19:12.

place, and I think it was... I am just looking at the time, can we

:19:13.:19:20.

catch it? Lets just check it out. 1:56.61. It looked quickly, it was

:19:21.:19:27.

quick. It is the fastest we have seen by a long way, a meeting

:19:28.:19:32.

record, very classy. By anyone's standing, that is a good run by

:19:33.:19:37.

Semenya. She has been in great form already coming out of the South

:19:38.:19:40.

African season, and look at that form. Wambui doing her best, and you

:19:41.:19:49.

looked at Dibaba there, that is about as bad as you will see her

:19:50.:19:52.

looking in the last few metres of a 1500 metres race, all over the

:19:53.:19:58.

place. She has only just dipped under two minutes, 1.57 at the end

:19:59.:20:05.

of the 200 metres final last year, so nowhere near Semenya, out of

:20:06.:20:11.

Rome, and if she keeps running like that for the rest of the season,

:20:12.:20:15.

which I expect she will, you can't see anybody getting past, can you?

:20:16.:20:23.

STUDIO: This year the Diamond League is a little different. There are 14

:20:24.:20:27.

meetings around the world encompassing 16 disciplines, both

:20:28.:20:30.

men and women, but the competition now follows a championship model,

:20:31.:20:33.

with the first 12 meetings acting as qualification for one of the two

:20:34.:20:37.

finals in Zurich and Brussels. Each of the disciplines is staged six or

:20:38.:20:44.

four times before the final, and each meeting, athletes are awarded

:20:45.:20:48.

points for their ranking. The top athletes at the end of qualification

:20:49.:20:51.

will be awarded a starting place in the winner takes all final.

:20:52.:20:57.

COMMENTATOR: Arca of Nigeria, a cracking start to the year for

:20:58.:21:15.

Desiree Henry, still just 21. A relay bronze-medallist last year,

:21:16.:21:21.

and close to that 11 seconds mark already this year.

:21:22.:21:34.

Ta Lou, fourth in both sprints. Elaine Thompson, already having a

:21:35.:21:42.

great season, it began with a 60 metres personal best in Birmingham,

:21:43.:21:47.

you might remember that, and she has also run a rather modest personal

:21:48.:21:56.

best outdoors, so this 200 should set her very nicely. Dafne

:21:57.:22:01.

Schippers, in training in America, she has already had some good

:22:02.:22:08.

results in training. And Veronica Campbell-Brown, so many of these

:22:09.:22:11.

athletes coming over from the Caribbean season, the American relay

:22:12.:22:15.

season, and of course the world relays which were just recently held

:22:16.:22:22.

in the Bahamas. Simone Facey, the Texan student, and Atkins will be

:22:23.:22:31.

right on the inside. So, Elaine Thompson in lane five, Dafne

:22:32.:22:36.

Schippers in lane four, Veronica Campbell-Brown in lane three. And

:22:37.:22:42.

the Ivory Coast athlete Ta Lou in six.

:22:43.:22:47.

Thompson gets a very good start, but so does Dafne Schippers. Desiree

:22:48.:22:58.

Henry is already up. Chronicle Campbell Brown is running a good

:22:59.:23:03.

bend. Dafne Schippers trying to hang on down the home straight. Ta Lou

:23:04.:23:09.

getting into the back, but it is a lane Thompson who wins it. It was a

:23:10.:23:18.

measured bend from Elaine Thompson, that last 20 metres off the bend,

:23:19.:23:21.

that transition into a home straight, opened up the gap, and

:23:22.:23:28.

after that, Dafne Schippers was just chasing and never really got on

:23:29.:23:32.

terms. What speed endurance that showed. You are quite right, it was

:23:33.:23:39.

by her standards a fairly ponderous bend, and of course Dafne Schippers

:23:40.:23:44.

was right upon her, but the transition was superb, she just

:23:45.:23:48.

flowed into the home straight. She is down at the moment, and right on

:23:49.:23:52.

the inside of her, Veronica Campbell-Brown was going well at

:23:53.:23:55.

this stage, then all of a sudden the burners are turned on and she starts

:23:56.:24:00.

to move away. Perfect, beautiful relaxation, high on the toes, hips

:24:01.:24:07.

high, total and utter concentration. Schippers struggling, having to give

:24:08.:24:11.

way in the final stages. It was into a slight headwind, so that might

:24:12.:24:19.

have been worse, 22.19, could she have got under 22 without the

:24:20.:24:30.

headwind? Schippers behind her, and Ta Lou taking third with 22.77.

:24:31.:24:41.

Desiree Henry disappointing, back in seventh, 23.22.

:24:42.:24:45.

The tracksuit bottoms are off now, they mean business. And a huge cheer

:24:46.:24:53.

goes up for the local lad. His early athletics career involved

:24:54.:24:58.

racewalking, a bit of distance running, before he found the high

:24:59.:25:04.

jump, and what a prodigious talent he had, all those problems he has

:25:05.:25:08.

had with his back seam at the moment to be put to one side, and he is

:25:09.:25:12.

jumping beautifully. There was a period last year where we were

:25:13.:25:17.

expecting him to do well, and there was a big drop-off in his form,

:25:18.:25:20.

perhaps he was doing too much in preparation. This is Donald Thomas,

:25:21.:25:31.

2.29, and it stayed. So, two men clear at 2.29. Donald Thomas has

:25:32.:25:40.

been around a long time, really gave that a rattle, but it stays on.

:25:41.:25:50.

Robbie Grabarz, 2.29. He needs this. Oh, that's better! He came off a

:25:51.:25:56.

pretty good indoor season, and Robbie now, 2.29, joins Barshim and

:25:57.:26:12.

Ghazal, the only ones clear at this height.

:26:13.:26:16.

STUDIO: Our Diamond League coverage continues next Sunday from Shanghai.

:26:17.:26:19.

Later this month, and a little closer to home, we will have the

:26:20.:26:27.

great city games in Manchester: The great Manchester run is on Sunday

:26:28.:26:31.

the 28th of May, live on ABC two. But now the latest news from the

:26:32.:26:37.

world of athletics. There have been controversial

:26:38.:26:40.

proposals put forward by the European athletics governing body

:26:41.:26:43.

who have suggested rewriting all world records set before 2005 in an

:26:44.:26:47.

attempt to restore faith in the sport. If the proposals are ratified

:26:48.:26:53.

by the IAAF, a world record would only stand if it was achieved at a

:26:54.:26:57.

competition on a list of approved international events. The athletes

:26:58.:27:00.

will have an subject to an agreed number of doping tests in the

:27:01.:27:04.

monthly Diop Tuitt, and the sample taken after the record was stored

:27:05.:27:08.

and available for retesting tenures. That would mean many prominent

:27:09.:27:12.

retired athletes could face losing their world records despite never

:27:13.:27:15.

having failed a drugs test, as their records were set before modern

:27:16.:27:19.

anti-dumping measures were put in place. This proposal has been

:27:20.:27:22.

heavily criticised by athletes who stand to lose their records. Paula

:27:23.:27:27.

Radcliffe, Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan and Steve Cram have all

:27:28.:27:34.

expressed their disappointment at what was described as collateral

:27:35.:27:39.

damage in the fight against doping, as was Colin Jackson. This is a

:27:40.:27:43.

revolutionary approach, and we want to regain the trust of the public. I

:27:44.:27:48.

would have thought that the world record should be taken from athletes

:27:49.:27:52.

not from bureaucrats sitting in offices who make a decision that all

:27:53.:27:55.

of a sudden actually we are not sure that you did your record legally,

:27:56.:27:59.

that is how it sounds to me, so we will just eradicate it off the

:28:00.:28:03.

books. That doesn't seem fair in any shape or form. This is a broad

:28:04.:28:09.

sweeping solution which they are trying to push in, which yet again

:28:10.:28:12.

:28:22.:28:29.

COMMENTATOR: Sowter the women's one hurdles. The line-up, you can see on

:28:30.:28:40.

the left. Sharika Nelvis was eighth in Beijing in 2015, just outside 13

:28:41.:28:49.

seconds. Cindy Roleder, fifth in the Olympic games, European champion.

:28:50.:28:57.

There is so much talent here. Nia Ali, 12.48 her best, and here is the

:28:58.:29:02.

world record holder, Kendra Harrison, didn't even make the

:29:03.:29:05.

American Olympic team, sixth in their trials. She was towed dominant

:29:06.:29:10.

in setting the world record at 12.20 last season. Christina Manning of

:29:11.:29:15.

the United States, 12.6 T two a personal best and seasons best.

:29:16.:29:28.

Let's see what Cindy Ofili can do here, Kendra Harrison seven times a

:29:29.:29:31.

Diamond League winner, looked invincible last year, and whatever

:29:32.:29:38.

happened for her to come sixth in the Olympic trials? She was so

:29:39.:29:44.

dominant. But that is athletics for you.

:29:45.:30:12.

This should be a very quick race in deed. Harrison away very strongly.

:30:13.:30:18.

Harrison moving further and further away. The time,... There is a little

:30:19.:30:28.

bit of a niggle where I fancy. A little bit of a limp for Kendra

:30:29.:30:36.

Harrison. I just wonder if there was a little problem at the end of that

:30:37.:30:40.

race. She has wandered over and she is in tears at the end there. I am

:30:41.:30:51.

not sure why. Nia Ali was awful. She smashed that first hurdle. As ever,

:30:52.:30:58.

nice and nice and smooth and clean. We didn't see a problem and it

:30:59.:31:03.

looked like everything was OK and then all of a sudden the tears come.

:31:04.:31:09.

She is down there asking for medical attention. Therein to to meet a

:31:10.:31:15.

headwind so it was never going to be quick but for her that is reasonably

:31:16.:31:19.

quick. Just watch as she comes over the last hurdle. May be only a

:31:20.:31:23.

niggle, let's hope so. 2016 was an amazing breakthrough

:31:24.:31:38.

year for steeplechaser Ruth Jebet. She went on to become Bahrain's

:31:39.:31:42.

first Olympic gold medal list winning the Rio final before

:31:43.:31:48.

returning to the Diamond League before smashing the world record,

:31:49.:31:52.

all before her 20th birthday. Can she get off to a winning start this

:31:53.:31:54.

year? Here we go in the 3000 metres

:31:55.:32:04.

steeplechase. The list is on the left of the picture. There is Ruth

:32:05.:32:20.

Jebet the Olympic champion. Kyeng is the world champion. She won the

:32:21.:32:26.

world title in Beijing. Emma Coburn as well, and Olympic

:32:27.:32:34.

bronze-medallist, terrific. The pace they have set is for something like

:32:35.:32:39.

9.15 but we will see what chance buyers in this. I would expect to

:32:40.:32:50.

see the world champion Kyeng trying to get into this race and put

:32:51.:33:00.

pressure on Jebet. Certainly the pacemakers have got to do a decent

:33:01.:33:11.

job here. Gathoni is not helping at all here moving far too far away.

:33:12.:33:17.

That doesn't help at all. By the Olympic silver-medallist last

:33:18.:33:35.

year, he so wanted to win in Rio but it was not to be and in front of his

:33:36.:33:41.

home crowd. We have seen him produce fabulous performances. Yes, yes! I'm

:33:42.:33:54.

not sure he has even started. We could be in for a long night here.

:33:55.:34:01.

He looks kind of up for this. The Olympic silver-medallist with the

:34:02.:34:07.

bar now at 4.65. There she goes. Sandi Morris says she is loving the

:34:08.:34:13.

rivalry developing between herself and her rival Katerina Stefanidi.

:34:14.:34:22.

She trains and lives in the US as well and they have got to know each

:34:23.:34:27.

other pretty well. The two of them are starting to dominate in this.

:34:28.:34:37.

Here she is, the Olympic champion. A second time at 4.65. In second

:34:38.:34:46.

place. A determined athlete. Oh, yes, that was a superb vault. She

:34:47.:34:54.

has really come of age. She said the Olympic final was very hard indeed.

:34:55.:34:58.

She said it was a difficult endeavour. The Olympic champion and

:34:59.:35:09.

4.86 is her personal best but that looked good. Yarisley Silva. Didn't

:35:10.:35:19.

look good early on. She has had a fair few failures in this. Seven

:35:20.:35:24.

failures so far, but that is when it matters, when you start clearing the

:35:25.:35:35.

bigger heights. And so she gets over that 4.65 season's best. Holly

:35:36.:35:41.

Bradshaw is out now. She is finished. There is a good little

:35:42.:35:44.

group they're just starting to slow a little bit at the front. Emma

:35:45.:35:50.

Coburn and others are good 15 metres behind them. We will get the time

:35:51.:35:59.

for the first kilometre in a moment. They are just inside the 9.15. They

:36:00.:36:03.

are on about 9.10 if they keep this going. One of the pacemakers has

:36:04.:36:09.

dropped out now. Ruth Jebet who we have seen many times leading races

:36:10.:36:14.

but she has proved everything she needs to prove. That is a fast

:36:15.:36:20.

paced, Stuart. It is nine minute pace. Chepsol is up there. They are

:36:21.:36:37.

all trying to do their best here. It is developing into a fast pace and

:36:38.:36:41.

you wonder at what point Jebet will want to push on here. They are going

:36:42.:36:48.

a bit quicker than was initially asked. But now you are in this case,

:36:49.:36:51.

I wonder if she thinks, I will take this opportunity to push on.

:36:52.:36:59.

This is Omar Craddock. Trying to work out the wind here. Going into a

:37:00.:37:12.

bit of a breeze. That was solid enough. Nice on the board. I tell

:37:13.:37:22.

you, Steve, he is having to work very, very hard in there,

:37:23.:37:26.

particularly in the middle phase to survive and get into that job. It is

:37:27.:37:31.

very ragged. There is nothing smooth about that. It is a piece of power

:37:32.:37:39.

triple jumping. Well, that is good from him, already proving his

:37:40.:37:44.

season's best, going beyond 17 metres. That will move him into an

:37:45.:37:49.

early lead. The men's high jump, Robbie Grabarz. Oh, yes, he is

:37:50.:38:00.

continuing to go well here. I was talking about his confidence he

:38:01.:38:04.

carries now season three season. Although he did not win a medal in

:38:05.:38:09.

Rio he was happy with the competition and a big year ahead.

:38:10.:38:13.

London where he won the bronze medal in 2012. He has a chance in front of

:38:14.:38:22.

a home crowd again to do the same. So Mutaz Essa Barshim now. Here we

:38:23.:38:28.

go again. And once more. He is showing the others where to go. And

:38:29.:38:34.

where he is going, he will certainly not beat him in the sense that

:38:35.:38:45.

first-time clearance. So smooth, lovely rhythm coming in. Getting a

:38:46.:38:51.

little bit excited now. Coming round now with a couple of laps to go in

:38:52.:38:58.

the women's steeplechase. Jebet leads. Kiyeng in second place. Then

:38:59.:39:06.

Chepsol, world junior champion. Beatrice Chepkoech has been there or

:39:07.:39:14.

thereabouts all the time. Jebet is now about 40 metres down. The rest

:39:15.:39:18.

following in their wake really because the pace has really hotted

:39:19.:39:26.

up now. Jebet has taken it on now. The tenor of the races hers. This is

:39:27.:39:37.

a real charge once again. We have seen Jebet run the races in

:39:38.:39:41.

different ways. When she was looking for records she would go out there

:39:42.:39:45.

in set the pace herself, really hammer it home. This could be the

:39:46.:39:49.

first time we have seen more than one woman go to nine minutes in a

:39:50.:39:54.

race. I said she will have to dig it up because Kiyeng looking dangerous,

:39:55.:40:00.

really, really dangerous. The world champion of 2015 does not like

:40:01.:40:05.

losing. She hurtled well they are right on the shoulder of Jebet.

:40:06.:40:12.

These two are away. Beatrice Chepkoech in third place and the

:40:13.:40:16.

junior just dropping off a little bit. What a race we have here with

:40:17.:40:25.

the world champion. Watch the clock. Absolutely superb. Kiyeng has come

:40:26.:40:29.

past the Olympic champion and world record-holder. Can she hold on? She

:40:30.:40:36.

can indeed. Jebet is finished. Kiyeng is coming through. Look the

:40:37.:40:43.

clock! Just missed the nine minutes. So, it was very, very quick. Emma

:40:44.:40:52.

Coburn coming through to finish here. Assefa coming through to

:40:53.:41:01.

finish as well. They will all know it was pretty quick. In fact, it was

:41:02.:41:06.

a sensationally quit race in the end. Just outside nine minutes. How

:41:07.:41:13.

close was that? We almost had the two under nine minutes, didn't we?

:41:14.:41:19.

Cracking race. This is Jebet looking up at the screen. She knows the

:41:20.:41:24.

I said at the bell she was just looking a bit flat

:41:25.:41:29.

flat. Kiyeng on her shoulder knows she has to go away here. They are

:41:30.:41:35.

chasing the clock. At this point you still thought there was a point for

:41:36.:41:39.

two of them to get under nine minutes. In the end, Jebet faded.

:41:40.:41:45.

Kiyeng came away. She was not even looking at the clock. She has missed

:41:46.:41:49.

it by a tent of a second. Asafa Powell, he has run more sub

:41:50.:42:31.

tens than anyone else. Justin Gatlin. Of course, not able to hang

:42:32.:42:39.

onto Usain Bolt in Rio. He had one or two injury problems last year

:42:40.:42:45.

which held him back. 35 years of age now, the American. Akani Simbine

:42:46.:42:52.

from South Africa, what a start to his year. It will be really

:42:53.:43:00.

interesting to see how he goes. A breeze in the face will not help. A

:43:01.:43:06.

local man, Benny Aga Moody, running for Qatar. -- Femi Ogunode.

:43:07.:43:15.

Gatlin as ever gets out pretty quickly. Andre de Grasse struggling.

:43:16.:43:27.

Asafa Powell takes second. We were looking for sub ten. Didn't quite

:43:28.:43:37.

getting that. It has come up as 9.99 in front of May. And that is into a

:43:38.:43:44.

headwind. I said how well he has been going, what a season this young

:43:45.:43:52.

man has had. A real powerhouse of a start from Gatlin. You expected him

:43:53.:43:56.

to go away with this. Simbine really put the pressure on the South

:43:57.:44:03.

African. An Olympic Games champion. He has been in the big championships

:44:04.:44:05.

before but he is believing now. Justin Gatlin and Andre de Grasse,

:44:06.:44:20.

the two big names of this race, disappointing. This is Katerina

:44:21.:44:27.

Stefanidi in the pole vaulter. A really good competition from her.

:44:28.:44:35.

Again goes clear. The Olympic champion is performing so well. I

:44:36.:44:39.

saw a glimpse of her earlier on with her husband coach. Based in Arizona

:44:40.:44:46.

for the last couple of years and she said everything over the last couple

:44:47.:44:49.

of years has just come together perfectly. There he is.

:44:50.:44:59.

The two of them are brilliant partnership on and off the track.

:45:00.:45:13.

Sandy Morris at 4.75, having seen the record, chasing Stefanidi, and a

:45:14.:45:22.

huge roar from Sandi Morris, and look at this, real strength from

:45:23.:45:28.

Morris, and then the athleticism comes in. She had a little bit to

:45:29.:45:33.

spare as well, Sery seasons best Morris outdoors.

:45:34.:45:39.

Just looking at the line-up you can see on the left there. Van Zyl

:45:40.:45:54.

there, and Clement, the world champion. Very quick, some 45. The

:45:55.:46:09.

following season he was nowhere near the form that we saw. Samba of Qatar

:46:10.:46:14.

is a world leader at this stage. Nicholas Bett has not gone off very

:46:15.:46:59.

quickly indeed. Clement now making some headway as they come into the

:47:00.:47:07.

300 metres mark. Samba going very strongly indeed in this race. He is

:47:08.:47:14.

the world leader, and he has got the fast time in this so far, and he is

:47:15.:47:21.

absolutely flying in this, the crowd will enjoy this one. Kerron Clement

:47:22.:47:28.

struggling, but look at this, samba of Qatar, WinZip comfortably, van

:47:29.:47:37.

Zyl in third place, and we have a new kid on the block, he is only 21,

:47:38.:47:44.

he looked very strong. Clement looked good, but from about 300 in,

:47:45.:47:52.

this young fellow absolutely flew away from the rest of the field.

:47:53.:47:58.

What a talent he is. He is big and strong, he has got to control that,

:47:59.:48:04.

and his stride pattern, he has changed down before this point, but

:48:05.:48:07.

at this point, he has gone so hard, you think, are you going to fall

:48:08.:48:14.

apart? But he obviously has huge ability, and this is a massive find

:48:15.:48:22.

for Qatar. If he is running low 48s at this stage in the development of

:48:23.:48:25.

his career, what is he going to be capable of? That that the distance

:48:26.:48:29.

between him and what is a very capable field. He has a look at the

:48:30.:48:35.

clock almost as if to say, really? He thought he might be closer to

:48:36.:48:42.

breaking 48 seconds. He is a big new star in this event.

:48:43.:48:48.

Get inspired is BBC Sport's new campaign to help you get active. You

:49:11.:49:17.

Last event on the track this evening, the men's 3000 is, hugely

:49:18.:49:30.

talented men like Kewmoi. Chelimo made a name for himself in the

:49:31.:49:43.

Olympic Games, and could Kejelcha knows how to do well. 3000, seven

:49:44.:49:50.

and a half laps of the track. The pace they have asked for world get

:49:51.:49:56.

them to two kilometres in just outside five minutes. They are

:49:57.:50:01.

looking for something quicker than 7.30, it is whether or not they get

:50:02.:50:07.

the pace over the first 45 laps. Conditions as ever really good, the

:50:08.:50:11.

breeze settling down a little bit, it is in their faces in the home

:50:12.:50:22.

straight. This is Kazi from Hungary who is trying to run around 60 -

:50:23.:50:39.

second laps. Barshim knew he had to aim for the higher height, grab

:50:40.:50:45.

Robbie Grabarz guaranteed second place, had a decent go at 2.33 mob

:50:46.:50:52.

at 2.55 is beyond him to night. He will be pleased to have come second

:50:53.:50:55.

in a good quality competition, he knows that Barshim is great. It is

:50:56.:51:00.

up to him to see how high he can go tonight. 2.36, then. He looked so

:51:01.:51:07.

good right up to and including 2.30 three. Oh, yes. 2.36, and flying.

:51:08.:51:19.

Bronze-medallist as I said in London, but how far has he come

:51:20.:51:23.

since then? So close to the world record with 2.43 his personal best.

:51:24.:51:30.

Some terrific competitions, but he is full of confidence, he is at

:51:31.:51:34.

home. Everything is right for him, and you can see the pass, read cross

:51:35.:51:46.

is a failure, a pass, and then the first time clearance at 2.30 six. --

:51:47.:52:04.

2.36. Stefanidi, what a performer. I tell you what, that lead will be

:52:05.:52:09.

difficult to take away, that's for sure.

:52:10.:52:29.

So, Copello, they are all struggling with the headwind a little here,

:52:30.:52:37.

let's see what Copello can do here, he just fell off a little at the

:52:38.:52:43.

end. Very good on the board, but Copello, he is a neat runner on his

:52:44.:52:52.

approach, but again, they are all struggling to get any distance at

:52:53.:53:00.

all tonight. Maybe an improvement. Indeed it is, 16.81, and that moves

:53:01.:53:11.

him up into third-place. Four laps to go in the men's 3000. Could of

:53:12.:53:24.

Kejelcha has never been far from the front, but the pace has been strong,

:53:25.:53:32.

there is always a danger that it will fall off. They are trying to

:53:33.:53:47.

maintain a roundabout 60-2nd laps. Further back on the field, you can

:53:48.:53:51.

see they're all stretched out. Andrew Butchart has been training,

:53:52.:53:59.

many have come here expecting a fast time, but look at the gap now,

:54:00.:54:04.

Kejelcha is out in front with three to go. This is the javelin, and

:54:05.:54:19.

third place was Vadlejch, and my goodness me, that last throw was a

:54:20.:54:27.

demonstration. That is close to the 90 metres line, and that got him

:54:28.:54:30.

third place, that was the quality of this competition, he hit it very

:54:31.:54:38.

hard. He was eighth in that final, now throwing it out close to 90

:54:39.:54:43.

metres. How often would that distance have won a major event on

:54:44.:54:53.

any circuit, really? And there he is, 93.90, the second longest

:54:54.:55:01.

throw-in javelin history. Fabulous javelin competition, and better

:55:02.:55:03.

doesn't look too happy. -- Japan is only Zelezny has thrown further than

:55:04.:55:15.

that. Christian Taylor, and that was good

:55:16.:55:30.

enough to take it at 17.25. Way off the board, that is what you call

:55:31.:55:35.

safe, and there it is, 17.25, that will do and it moves him ahead of

:55:36.:55:37.

Cradock who took second place. It is Kejelcha, and now Kwemoi. Paul

:55:38.:55:53.

Chelimo who kicked so well at the Olympic Games to get a good time,

:55:54.:55:57.

they are still going fast, and a big gap behind them. Andrew Butchart of

:55:58.:56:04.

Great Britain and Ben true making progress, but the four in the front,

:56:05.:56:09.

it is Kejelcha with the kickers, here comes Kwemoi again. Ndiku

:56:10.:56:14.

looking a little ragged for the first time. Kwemoi makes the first

:56:15.:56:21.

move. Chelimo tries to cover it. It is Kwemoi, the silver-medallist from

:56:22.:56:27.

2014, the man who wants to make a go at the 5000 metres is chasing, or is

:56:28.:56:33.

making Chelimo try to chase him. And Kwemoi finds another gear, and away

:56:34.:56:39.

he goes. Look at this, he is fantastic. He has a chance of going

:56:40.:56:44.

under 7.30, and look at the clock, 7.28. Then it is Chelimo, then

:56:45.:56:54.

Kejelcha, then a very tired Ndiku. There will be some quick times

:56:55.:56:58.

tonight behind as the clock now ticks are beyond 7.40 four, 45. That

:56:59.:57:06.

was a big race for this man. The 3000 to distances, that is very big,

:57:07.:57:14.

a huge performance from him. That will put him not quite on the world

:57:15.:57:20.

all-time list of the top 20, but not far away from it.

:57:21.:57:24.

Headlines were made on the field, 90 metres and 93 centimetres for Thomas

:57:25.:57:35.

Rohler, the Olympic champion. And Barshim in the high jump set a

:57:36.:57:39.

record. And a new name to watch out for, Samba in the 400 metres

:57:40.:57:46.

hurdles. Robbie Grabarz has a good start to his outdoor season. Holly

:57:47.:57:52.

Bradshaw, 4.55, expect she might be disappointed not to have gone higher

:57:53.:57:57.

tonight. And on the track, Andrew Butchart, Desiree Henry and Cindy

:57:58.:58:05.

Ofili a little disappointing, but it is early days, amazing how quickly

:58:06.:58:09.

June and July will come. If you want to see more, you can on

:58:10.:58:13.

the BBC website or the News channel. Next week the athletes converge in

:58:14.:58:17.

Shanghai, and you can see highlights on five o'clock at BBC Two on

:58:18.:58:20.

Sunday. Until then, goodbye. Usain Bolt! He has done it! Caster

:58:21.:58:33.

Semenya is the champion. It is a new British record.

:58:34.:58:40.

It is a mammoth jump. Sophie Hitchon, what an effort.

:58:41.:58:46.

It is huge, a new British record. David Rudisha is going to win the

:58:47.:58:57.

world title. Laura Muir has smashed the British

:58:58.:59:02.

record. Mo Farah wins the gold!
