Welcome to the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham for the second day of the | :00:49. | :00:54.
British athletics Championships. Also the trials for the World | :00:55. | :00:56.
Athletics Championships in London in August. The top athletes in the | :00:57. | :01:00.
country here, looking to secure their place. Hello, Adam. Like him. | :01:01. | :01:06.
You will see plenty more of them a little bit later. | :01:07. | :01:31.
It's a mammoth jump! Adam Gemili wins it. | :01:32. | :01:42.
It's going to be victory for Steph 12. | :01:43. | :01:51.
The stakes really couldn't be higher, could they? Not just | :01:52. | :01:57.
national titles up for grabs, but a place on the team to be in London in | :01:58. | :02:02.
August, representing Great Britain at the World Athletics Championships | :02:03. | :02:06.
on that iconic track. We will update you with the first eight of the | :02:07. | :02:09.
championships as we go through the afternoon, but let's mark your card | :02:10. | :02:13.
as to how the afternoon will pan out. -- the first day. | :02:14. | :02:30.
Robbie Grabow 's is going well in the Diamond League, fresh from | :02:31. | :02:34.
jumping 2.24, last night in Paris. No Laura Muir this weekend in the | :02:35. | :02:50.
1500 metre final, but fellow Olympian Laura Weightman is having a | :02:51. | :02:53.
good season and she will be after the title. | :02:54. | :02:59.
Jake Wightman looking to continue his impressive form. Shara Proctor | :03:00. | :03:06.
had to put out of the women's long jump after a minor car accident. | :03:07. | :03:11.
Matthew Hudson-Smith will be looking to retain his title in the men's 400 | :03:12. | :03:14.
metres. First, straight down on the track. | :03:15. | :03:27.
They are out already for the men's 110 metre hurdles heats. The first | :03:28. | :03:33.
features the hotly fancied David Omoregie. We will join our | :03:34. | :03:37.
commentators, very good afternoon today to Colin Jackson and Andrew | :03:38. | :03:39.
Cotter. COMMENTATOR: David Omoregie, the red | :03:40. | :03:49.
signifies he is the UK's leading candidate. Andrew Pozzi competed | :03:50. | :03:57.
very well last night in Paris. Jack Kirby is the youngest in the | :03:58. | :04:08.
field at 20. He will be trying to live with the quicker man inside | :04:09. | :04:09.
him. A man very familiar with this track. | :04:10. | :04:28.
13.91 this season. He might compete with Omoregie for the two automatic | :04:29. | :04:29.
places. 21 old Tim Duckworth, the Liverpool | :04:30. | :04:46.
Harriers, in a lane number eight. Omoregie and Okoro will fancy their | :04:47. | :04:58.
chances. Three heats of the men's 110 metres | :04:59. | :05:19.
hurdles. No Pozzi. He will get a place in the World Championships. | :05:20. | :05:39.
Behind Omoregie I think it was Feeney who took a distant second. A | :05:40. | :05:53.
long way behind the former world junior champion, Omoregie. He ran | :05:54. | :05:58.
13.34 in Lille last week. Not far away from that. In the absence of | :05:59. | :06:07.
Pozzi, he might be the favourite for this title. That was a really good | :06:08. | :06:13.
run. He clattered a few barriers, but the most important thing, he | :06:14. | :06:17.
went out and pushed himself. He knows he's not going to be | :06:18. | :06:20.
challenged by the rest of the field, so the time is all about him. He can | :06:21. | :06:26.
try stuff. He clattered barriers, yes, but he has won 13.4, straight | :06:27. | :06:32.
away a qualifying standard. We know he has it already, but it is | :06:33. | :06:37.
confidence building for the athletes to produce performances time and | :06:38. | :06:38.
again. The man inside him pull something | :06:39. | :06:46.
straight out of the blocks, so Omoregie was clear. When you have no | :06:47. | :06:49.
pressure either side and you are hurdling, do you have more freedom? | :06:50. | :06:53.
You can really challenge yourself and keep your mind on the things he | :06:54. | :06:57.
wanted to work on in training, it could be running off a barrier, | :06:58. | :07:01.
pushing on, really challenging yourself to say, you know what, I'm | :07:02. | :07:05.
going to take more risks at this stage. He is bouncing all over the | :07:06. | :07:10.
track here. But it's his first run out. Come the final, he will be used | :07:11. | :07:15.
to the speed of the track and the conditions. I am really happy with | :07:16. | :07:20.
that. The angle is deceptive, but he was drifting out to the right side | :07:21. | :07:26.
of his lane. Athletes always tend to drift towards the lead leg. Nothing | :07:27. | :07:30.
unusual, but that is what sometimes causes clashes. | :07:31. | :07:36.
David Omoregie goes through to the final. The first of three heats. | :07:37. | :07:44.
We had a slightly quicker time for him than that. A few problems with | :07:45. | :07:51.
the timings yesterday. A long way clear of the rest and safely | :07:52. | :07:52.
through. We will show you the other heats in | :07:53. | :08:00.
a few minutes. But I have a few minutes to say hello to Paula | :08:01. | :08:04.
Radcliffe and Denise Lewis. We are very excited about this afternoon. | :08:05. | :08:08.
There is an added sense, ladies, that it's not just about titles | :08:09. | :08:12.
today. The all-important place on the team is up for grabs. | :08:13. | :08:17.
Absolutely, the athletes want to be in London and taste the magic of | :08:18. | :08:22.
that stadium. We saw it at the Olympics, we know the World | :08:23. | :08:24.
Championships are going to be fantastic. It is about raising your | :08:25. | :08:28.
game today and making the most of the opportunity, using the incentive | :08:29. | :08:33.
to drive you home. We saw yesterday it doesn't always go to plan. | :08:34. | :08:37.
Sometimes pushing yourself so much can lead to disappointment. It is | :08:38. | :08:40.
balancing that knowing you have it within you, how to race clever, | :08:41. | :08:46.
heats especially for the sprinters, it's managing your body. Managing | :08:47. | :08:51.
your body and your emotions. It is very important, a British title. But | :08:52. | :08:56.
the chance to go back to that stadium. A log of these athletes | :08:57. | :08:59.
would have been knocking on the door of the team in 2012. -- a lot. They | :09:00. | :09:06.
will want a taste of that stadium in front of a home crowd, challenging | :09:07. | :09:10.
at a World Championships. Let's clarify what you have to do to | :09:11. | :09:14.
qualify for the championships in London. It's not an exact science. | :09:15. | :09:19.
If you finish in the top two this weekend and you have the | :09:20. | :09:22.
qualification standard, you are in. If you finish in the top two and you | :09:23. | :09:26.
haven't got the qualification standard but you have the European | :09:27. | :09:35.
championship, you are in. Some flexibility for the selectors to | :09:36. | :09:39.
make decisions that can allow people who perhaps don't perform this | :09:40. | :09:43.
weekend, but they know have a proven track record at Major Championships, | :09:44. | :09:48.
have had a really good season otherwise, to get on the squad. | :09:49. | :09:53.
There is. There are two camps. Sometimes a bit too much | :09:54. | :09:56.
flexibility. These are the trials, it is your duty to come and perform | :09:57. | :10:00.
to demonstrate why you deserve to be selected. Yes, lots of people are | :10:01. | :10:05.
injured and I know it is difficult the year after the Olympics, because | :10:06. | :10:07.
people start late and they are trying to peak at the right time. | :10:08. | :10:11.
But the big window of qualification makes it more difficult for the | :10:12. | :10:14.
selectors and they don't always get it right. If you decide not to | :10:15. | :10:18.
compete in an event that you could be selected in, you run the risk of | :10:19. | :10:24.
not being selected. You do, but not in the same way as if you were in | :10:25. | :10:29.
the US. It really is the first three across the line and no excuses. If | :10:30. | :10:33.
use grew up, you are not even making it to the championships. Ours is | :10:34. | :10:38.
maybe a bit too ambiguous. We have seen some big names missing this | :10:39. | :10:42.
year. They could have gone a better crowd and atmosphere here. To give | :10:43. | :10:46.
something back to the supporters who come out. Where are you on the likes | :10:47. | :10:53.
of Pozzi missing because he is running in the Diamond League? It is | :10:54. | :10:58.
tough, I think he should be here and competing for his title as the | :10:59. | :11:02.
British champion, and his place on the team. He did run a personal best | :11:03. | :11:06.
and finished second. You could say the same for Laura Muir. She has | :11:07. | :11:10.
been injured but she is racing on Thursday in Lausanne. It makes it | :11:11. | :11:17.
difficult. I understand why athletes don't, because the level of | :11:18. | :11:20.
competition is not so high, it is better to support the sport. Pozzi | :11:21. | :11:28.
was given permission to run in the Diamond League, so we shall see | :11:29. | :11:31.
where the runners and riders come from in this heat to make it to the | :11:32. | :11:34.
final. Let's get back to Colin and Andrew. | :11:35. | :11:38.
COMMENTATOR: Steve, in this one, Gabby. | :11:39. | :11:45.
James Weaver will be going to the under 23 championships shortly. | :11:46. | :11:51.
Competed well in the age-group championships at Bedford last week. | :11:52. | :11:56.
Jack major set a new personal best in the 100 metres, just under 11 | :11:57. | :11:58.
seconds. This man a decathlete. 7100 points. | :11:59. | :12:11.
Only one competitive run over the hurdles. George Vaughan, another | :12:12. | :12:17.
improving youngster, 19. Close to 14 seconds. He was out of the medals in | :12:18. | :12:23.
the under 20 championships, though. We talked about the qualification | :12:24. | :12:29.
time. Pozzi has it, Omoregie we have seen, David King has eight, 13 .48. | :12:30. | :12:34.
A great opportunity to cement his place. -- Dave King has it. He can | :12:35. | :12:40.
book his place. William was at the under 23s last | :12:41. | :12:53.
week, finishing sixth. Dave King, no mistakes here, get in | :12:54. | :13:05.
the final and finish in the top two. Sounds easy, doesn't it? This is one | :13:06. | :13:08.
event where you can get it wrong. His time came in a recent meeting. | :13:09. | :13:24.
He ran pretty well in hand the well. Not far away on that occasion. | :13:25. | :13:39.
It is all about David King. That's nice. Good running. 13.66. The wind | :13:40. | :13:53.
was favourable. I said, Colin, it sounds easy, doesn't it? High | :13:54. | :13:56.
hurdles is always fraught with danger. The first thing is relief. | :13:57. | :14:01.
He is getting consistent in the mid-13 seconds. He did the one time | :14:02. | :14:07.
that will hopefully make it a selection for him this weekend. | :14:08. | :14:15.
Really, he just has to err on caution, because he needs to finish | :14:16. | :14:20.
in the top two. Watching him run here, I see no reason why he | :14:21. | :14:25.
shouldn't be able to do that. It was a very good run by James Weaver on | :14:26. | :14:30.
the inside. This young man, 19, with a personal best of 13.77. Pretty | :14:31. | :14:37.
good. David is very much the class of the field. Smooth, technically | :14:38. | :14:43.
good. Where he will get his biggest improvement from is generating more | :14:44. | :14:48.
leg speed. Sprinting quicker. That will force him onto the barriers. He | :14:49. | :14:52.
can really test that very good technique of his. I watched him | :14:53. | :14:58.
develop and it is good to see that. He is going to make these | :14:59. | :15:02.
championships, fingers crossed. He can get the experience at a major | :15:03. | :15:07.
event. This is always really important. To say that our athletes | :15:08. | :15:10.
get the opportunity to run at the very highest level. When you do | :15:11. | :15:14.
that, it will push you on. Fingers crossed. That he does well again in | :15:15. | :15:17.
the final. We do have a result for this one. | :15:18. | :15:30.
Keeping an eye on the fastest losers, Miguel Perera, still in | :15:31. | :15:39.
there, two fastest loser times, David Feeney from the first heat, | :15:40. | :15:44.
legal Parreira is in with a chance. David King and James Weaver through | :15:45. | :15:49.
to the final. Seems like a good time to catch up with some of the action | :15:50. | :15:52.
from yesterday, the women's 100 metres hurdles final. Two have led | :15:53. | :15:58.
the way for British athletics in this event for the last couple of | :15:59. | :16:02.
seasons. Cindy Ophelia out this season through injury. Tiffany | :16:03. | :16:05.
Porter was not competing yesterday with a little niggle. Chance to see | :16:06. | :16:09.
new talent on the blocks. Steve Cram is your commentator for this one. | :16:10. | :16:26.
The line-up... The women's 100-metre hurdles. | :16:27. | :16:31.
Very, very close. Quite tight now. Yes, she does! Miller over the last | :16:32. | :16:47.
two hurdles felt the pressure and could not hang on. Leading up to | :16:48. | :16:53.
that point. Good strong finish from Barrett, the 19-year-old, takes her | :16:54. | :16:58.
first senior title, and maybe one of a few to come, you never know. She | :16:59. | :17:04.
will improve, get better. Just look at the lean. She wanted this title, | :17:05. | :17:10.
didn't she? Miller will be disappointed she could not hang on. | :17:11. | :17:17.
And second, Jessica Hunter. We will hear from training and cello, | :17:18. | :17:24.
Barrett's coach later on -- Toni Minichiello. Tiffany Porter has been | :17:25. | :17:30.
given permission to miss the trials because of a hamstring niggle, I | :17:31. | :17:34.
guess selectors feel it is more important she stays fit and gets in | :17:35. | :17:37.
shape for the World Championships. You are spot on. Same thing with | :17:38. | :17:44.
Andrew Pozzi, he put his case to the federation, they said, yeah, you | :17:45. | :17:47.
will benefit more running well and a strong race in Paris, which he has | :17:48. | :17:52.
absolutely done. For me, sometimes you have to look at the progression | :17:53. | :17:55.
of the athletes and what you want them to do. Many years, if he gets | :17:56. | :18:02.
better, being more successful, and being able to draw the crowd here. I | :18:03. | :18:05.
think he will appreciate the opportunity at running at a high | :18:06. | :18:11.
level now. Barrett, new British champion, 19, a talent we would look | :18:12. | :18:16.
to develop over the next few years, and hopefully will be representing | :18:17. | :18:19.
Great Britain in major championships to come. What did you think of her? | :18:20. | :18:23.
For somebody so young, to keep a cool head when she was down and she | :18:24. | :18:27.
worked her way through the field, phenomenal performance to see | :18:28. | :18:31.
someone so young to deliver that. It was good to see. She is in good | :18:32. | :18:36.
hands, we know that. Absolutely. I am sure Toni will tell me more about | :18:37. | :18:40.
her later on. Colin, you are in charge on the microphone for the | :18:41. | :18:45.
next heat of the 100-metre hurdles, 110 metre hurdles, with Andrew | :18:46. | :18:49.
Cotter. I will hand back to Andrew. Thank you. Khai Riley-La-Borde will | :18:50. | :18:58.
fancy his chances in this one. The first two heats won comfortable you | :18:59. | :19:05.
by David Omoregie and David King respectively. Jake Porter will be | :19:06. | :19:09.
looking to get in the top two and both he and Khai Riley-La-Borde | :19:10. | :19:12.
would be the strongest contenders here for the automatic places. Khai | :19:13. | :19:15.
Riley-La-Borde, Dixon Earl... The third of the three heats and the | :19:16. | :19:30.
men's 110 metres hurdles. Khai Riley-La-Borde, there he is. Most | :19:31. | :19:40.
successful high hurdle club, Enfield and Haringey. Do you know why? They | :19:41. | :19:48.
merged. Olympic finalists at the same time whether coaches. You were | :19:49. | :19:52.
in there as well. Euan Dickson-Earle, three Britons in the | :19:53. | :19:57.
final in 92. Matthew Hewitt of Southampton goes inlay five here... | :19:58. | :20:08.
Jake Porter, Birchfield Harriers, strong contingent from this club | :20:09. | :20:13.
competing here, new personal best in Denmark last month. Reece Young of | :20:14. | :20:26.
lactate and Bromley, new personal best, 14.83 this year -- Blackheath | :20:27. | :20:32.
and Bromley. Another Birchfield Harriers, multi-eventing as well, | :20:33. | :20:34.
good heptathlete, Okoro. David King and David Omoregie both | :20:35. | :20:55.
comfortable winners in their heats. Two go through automatically. Khai | :20:56. | :20:59.
Riley-La-Borde on the inside, Euan Dickson-Earle, Matthew Hewitt, Jake | :21:00. | :21:04.
Porter, Reece Young, Okoro, the last of their heats in the men's 110 | :21:05. | :21:12.
metre hurdles. Cleanly away. Khai Riley-La-Borde being left a little | :21:13. | :21:15.
bit by Jake Porter at the moment. Those two separating themselves. | :21:16. | :21:22.
Powering themselves on. Khai Riley-La-Borde takes it. A little | :21:23. | :21:26.
bit slower than the first two heats. We did expect David Omoregie and | :21:27. | :21:32.
David King to be the favourites. Khai Riley-La-Borde will have | :21:33. | :21:34.
something to say in the final and Jake Porter makes his way through as | :21:35. | :21:40.
well. Good head to head. Really good. Nice to see that, actually. | :21:41. | :21:44.
Even though it is the heats, you still want to see quite | :21:45. | :21:52.
competitively and Kylie Riding the -- Khai Riley-La-Borde and Jake | :21:53. | :21:57.
Porter, I expected them to make mistakes, but they kept cool heads, | :21:58. | :22:02.
focused on the barriers, did exactly what was necessary. They have set | :22:03. | :22:06.
themselves very well up for the final. Could have a couple of | :22:07. | :22:10.
athletes under the 14 second mark. Two a long way clear of the rest in | :22:11. | :22:20.
these, in the others, one ahead, there is a gap between four and five | :22:21. | :22:24.
and the others. Most are very young. This is an event you Midge Ure into | :22:25. | :22:29.
as you get physically stronger, you get better, stronger -- you Midge | :22:30. | :22:39.
into. Pretty promising. Powerful looking figure, Khai Riley-La-Borde. | :22:40. | :22:45.
Upper body strength. Really strong, really powerful. Even with that | :22:46. | :22:50.
bulk, he still manages to get over the barriers, runs well and hard. | :22:51. | :22:57.
This is a really good sign for him. He is only 21, plenty more | :22:58. | :23:02.
improvement to come. Looking for someone to step up, not because | :23:03. | :23:07.
Andrew Pozzi is going very well, but will shaman struggling with injury | :23:08. | :23:10.
and Lawrence Clarke doing other things rather than athletics, a | :23:11. | :23:14.
little bit of a gap there for others to try to step up and get close to | :23:15. | :23:21.
the 13.50, 13.40. Khai Riley-La-Borde taking his place in | :23:22. | :23:25.
the final. Personal best for Jake Porter, good run from him. | :23:26. | :23:32.
A little earlier on, the crowd were hugely entertained by two cracking | :23:33. | :23:37.
five K walks, first the turn of the women, Beth Davies from Cardiff, | :23:38. | :23:43.
coached by Andy Drake, great squad going, Beth and Davis, a new | :23:44. | :23:56.
national record, walked 2:21.52, a whole string of personal bests | :23:57. | :23:59.
behind her. Congratulations to her. That was followed by Bosworth, | :24:00. | :24:08.
coming home waving on the way to another British record, he is in | :24:09. | :24:14.
superb form this year, walking a mile in the Anniversary Games next | :24:15. | :24:19.
week. Watch out for that one. Tom Bosworth smashing the British record | :24:20. | :24:25.
there and actually behind him I think Dickenson also broke the old | :24:26. | :24:30.
British record. Superb performance. Good afternoon for the coach, Andy | :24:31. | :24:34.
Drake. The shy retiring Tom Bosworth, everybody! Dickenson | :24:35. | :24:39.
himself there, personal best for him, superb from Wilkinson as well. | :24:40. | :24:45.
Host of personal bests. British walking is on a huge high, being led | :24:46. | :24:58.
by Tom Bosworth. They look back at the competition completed earlier, | :24:59. | :25:03.
the women's discus. The fifth round, her best of the afternoon. Already | :25:04. | :25:11.
in the lead, extended it. 58.14 centimetres. She has qualified for | :25:12. | :25:15.
the World Championships, the only competitor to have done so. She has | :25:16. | :25:18.
wrapped it up with the British title. Defending her title here, | :25:19. | :25:24.
Jade. Disappointed last week, but good win for her. | :25:25. | :25:30.
We will shortly be seeing the women's 200-metre heats, but some of | :25:31. | :25:34.
the very best of British women's sprinting well in action yesterday | :25:35. | :25:38.
with the 100 metres. Let us catch up on that. | :25:39. | :25:42.
Dina Asher-Smith goes in laying four. It should be a very, very | :25:43. | :25:49.
competitive final. Eno Asha Philip quickly away. | :25:50. | :26:04.
Ashleigh Nelson will try to get there. She gets it just, Dina | :26:05. | :26:11.
Asher-Smith. She understandably was never in it, winning time, a fourth | :26:12. | :26:19.
UK title to add to her European indoor title, Asha Philip is | :26:20. | :26:24.
champion again, just confirmation of it all. Daryll Neita getting the | :26:25. | :26:30.
second automatic qualifying place. Working really hard this year, doing | :26:31. | :26:35.
amazingly. The fact we came first and second again, the Olympics all | :26:36. | :26:39.
over again. Quite happy with my run, the fact I qualified is the main | :26:40. | :26:43.
reason why I was here so I am happy. So much strength and depth these | :26:44. | :26:47.
days in British female sprinting, there must be an awful lot of | :26:48. | :26:50.
pressure, you want to make the team so desperately. It was anyone's | :26:51. | :26:56.
game. I am really happy to have made it. London, got tickets, even though | :26:57. | :27:06.
we are not flying anywhere! Congratulations to them. The big | :27:07. | :27:09.
name we had so many hopes for four this season, Dina Asher-Smith, very | :27:10. | :27:15.
impressive Olympic Games, came off the winter season looking great | :27:16. | :27:18.
ahead of the indoor Championships, and then had to pull out earlier in | :27:19. | :27:23.
the season from Birmingham with an injury and it has been that injury | :27:24. | :27:27.
that has taken her so long to get back from and yesterday, her first | :27:28. | :27:31.
race of 2017, great emotion afterwards, and she was quick to | :27:32. | :27:35.
clarify, not because she was disappointed, just so relieved to | :27:36. | :27:38.
get through the race. It is one thing testing yourself in training, | :27:39. | :27:46.
but to come through that process, it will have given her some confidence | :27:47. | :27:49.
she is able to get back into some shape this season. I think so. The | :27:50. | :27:53.
start of next week, only training for three weeks, just had the most | :27:54. | :27:59.
horrific injury, to come back, to race here, what a race it was, we | :28:00. | :28:03.
will give her some confidence. It is not easy. She wants to be at the | :28:04. | :28:07.
championships but you have to listen to your body, especially when you | :28:08. | :28:11.
have a foot and ankle injury, it is tough getting back. You need races | :28:12. | :28:16.
as well, to get the confidence. She has time, we established earlier on, | :28:17. | :28:20.
the qualifying period is up until the end of July. She has to get | :28:21. | :28:25.
races in. If you were a betting woman right now? Her pedigree | :28:26. | :28:30.
dictates she deserves the respect, she deserves that she improves | :28:31. | :28:33.
herself time and time again with championships. The thing is, what is | :28:34. | :28:39.
key is she comes away from competition pain-free and that she | :28:40. | :28:43.
can put together a few weeks of training and there is the | :28:44. | :28:46.
Anniversary Games and there is time, don't panic. Such unfortunate timing | :28:47. | :28:50.
with the challenges in London as well. Let us head out to the track. | :28:51. | :28:55.
She could have been running in the 200 metres, but the perceived wisdom | :28:56. | :28:58.
was that when you are just coming off an injury to the foot, the Bend | :28:59. | :29:06.
is not the best place to test it out. I will let Andrew Cotter and | :29:07. | :29:09.
Colin Jackson talk you through this one. | :29:10. | :29:14.
COMMENTATOR: In UK terms, only Desiree Henry has run faster this | :29:15. | :29:18.
year than bank Williams and Bianca Williams goes here in lane six. -- | :29:19. | :29:28.
than Bianca Williams. Just want to go through automatically and it is | :29:29. | :29:31.
Bianca Williams's raced to dominate because the others are not quite up | :29:32. | :29:42.
to her standard. On the outside, from the city of York, new personal | :29:43. | :29:44.
best this season, 24.1 four. Barrett, in the colours of | :29:45. | :30:03.
Chesterfield, just 19. Has run close to 24. | :30:04. | :30:08.
Bianca Williams has run 22.83 this season in Gainesville in Florida | :30:09. | :30:13.
this season. Joanne Ryan, now 30. 24.68 this | :30:14. | :30:20.
season. Bloor, from the Trafford club. A | :30:21. | :30:37.
silver-medallist in the in the Commonwealth Games. -- in the 4x100m | :30:38. | :30:43.
in the Commonwealth Games. In the centre, Bianca Williams, | :30:44. | :30:57.
running well. Ran in the 100 as well, but this is | :30:58. | :31:06.
the stronger event for her. Four heats, so just one going | :31:07. | :31:18.
through automatically and four fastest losers. | :31:19. | :31:45.
The automatic qualifier will be Bianca Williams. 22.9, pretty good, | :31:46. | :31:54.
inside 23 seconds. That is what athletes of her calibre will be | :31:55. | :32:00.
looking for. It is legal as well, plus 1.6 metres per second. A strong | :32:01. | :32:05.
favourite for that race, but again, you have to deliver, which Bianca | :32:06. | :32:11.
Williams certainly did. A good run. A very good run. Out of the blocks | :32:12. | :32:15.
well, aggressive but controlled. You can't just hammer out of the blocks | :32:16. | :32:20.
in the 200 and think you can go flat out. A nice controlled race Bianca | :32:21. | :32:26.
is showing. She is just relaxing, not pressing. Taking it through to | :32:27. | :32:33.
the line. Good, good solid performance from her. It has been | :32:34. | :32:42.
rounded down to 22.89. As you say, it's not who finishes the fastest, | :32:43. | :32:46.
it is who decelerates the least. And maintaining the relaxed form. Always | :32:47. | :32:53.
key in the 200. You come off the bend and you get flung out. The | :32:54. | :32:58.
stride will lengthen. You could be tempted to push on but you have to | :32:59. | :33:02.
be nice and controlled, look at the little smile, she is happy with | :33:03. | :33:08.
that. A good run and a good time, 22.89. A season's best time for | :33:09. | :33:16.
Bloor. She will wait to see if that is good enough to see her through. | :33:17. | :33:21.
Before the next heat, some more action from yesterday with Phil | :33:22. | :33:24.
Jones. British record-holder Holly Bradshaw | :33:25. | :33:33.
cleared a modest 4.45 at the first attempt to win the women's pole | :33:34. | :33:37.
vault, in spite of what she called a recent dip in form. The double | :33:38. | :33:41.
Olympian knows that greater heights are within reach. But she is off to | :33:42. | :33:46.
the World Championships in London. Although I have had a bit of a blip | :33:47. | :33:51.
and an injury scare, I am back on track. 4.90 is in the tank and could | :33:52. | :33:57.
be good enough for a medal, maybe even win it. All my focus is on that | :33:58. | :34:02.
now, nothing else matters. Rio finalist Morgan Lake dominated the | :34:03. | :34:05.
high jump and showed her credentials for another world final in London, | :34:06. | :34:12.
living a lifetime best of 1.96. The 20-year-old, clearly in the form of | :34:13. | :34:17.
her life, attempted a new British record of 1.99, to no avail. You | :34:18. | :34:23.
must be thrilled. Absolutely ecstatic. I saw the sun was shining, | :34:24. | :34:27.
home crowd, I thought if it is going to be any day, it has to be today. | :34:28. | :34:35.
Definitely. Morgan Lake is not doing the heptathlon. Focusing on the high | :34:36. | :34:42.
jump. Qualifying for London with a new PB, two centimetres from a | :34:43. | :34:46.
British record. I love watching her. When she is on, she is on. But last | :34:47. | :34:52.
weekend, in the European team championship, it wasn't her weekend. | :34:53. | :34:56.
She is very much a confidence athlete. She is. Sometimes she | :34:57. | :35:03.
expresses a lot of emotion. When it is game on, she is really there, but | :35:04. | :35:09.
sometimes she can falter. With her maturity, she's going to need to | :35:10. | :35:13.
work on that in the years to come. Stunning high jump yesterday, a new | :35:14. | :35:18.
personal best, 1.96, I thought it was great. I am saying I am pleased | :35:19. | :35:24.
she is shelving the habitat along, but I think she is a natural high | :35:25. | :35:32.
jumper. -- shelving the heptathlon. This seems where she is at home. | :35:33. | :35:37.
Maybe if the confidence comes from great performances in the high jump, | :35:38. | :35:41.
maybe she will get back to the multi-event. Are you doubtful of | :35:42. | :35:48.
that? I am. I have seen her upset too many times when things have not | :35:49. | :35:53.
gone her way. What in the high jump, when it is on, it is just a thing of | :35:54. | :36:01.
beauty. KJT has the qualifying in the habitat on and could yet be | :36:02. | :36:04.
selected in the high jump as well. Jodie Williams, ready for the next | :36:05. | :36:10.
of the 200-metre heats. Steve Cram is taking this one. Hello, Steve. | :36:11. | :36:16.
COMMENTATOR: I think people look to Jodie but this is the young woman a | :36:17. | :36:23.
lot of people are looking at. Shannon Hylton. Her twin sister has | :36:24. | :36:28.
got through to the 400 metres final. Shannon already has the qualifying | :36:29. | :36:31.
time in this 200-metre event. Jodie Williams is now part of the | :36:32. | :36:41.
same training group, back from the States. A big test for her. Not | :36:42. | :36:47.
really hitting her straps just yet this year. 23.63, but like Bianca | :36:48. | :36:53.
Williams, would love to rediscover 2014 form. Didn't run badly last | :36:54. | :37:00.
year. Hannah Thomas from Cardiff in 97. -- in lane seven. Stacey Downie | :37:01. | :37:08.
ran a personal best. Nicole Kendall has run a 100-metre | :37:09. | :37:23.
personal best this year. 24.55 her best at 200. | :37:24. | :37:30.
Westwood, 18, 24.79 her new best, set this year. | :37:31. | :37:38.
Shannon Hylton, choosing to concentrate on the 200 metres. A | :37:39. | :37:46.
massive talent, the Hylton sisters. Like the Nielsens. One of them had a | :37:47. | :37:51.
disastrous run in the 400-metre heats yesterday. Hylton, a new | :37:52. | :37:58.
personal best at 100 metres this year. Shows she has the speed. | :37:59. | :38:07.
11.47. What did I say? Ten? That would be good! | :38:08. | :38:11.
Only the winner goes through. Four fastest losers. | :38:12. | :38:34.
Hylton nicely into her running, putting on a bit of a show. | :38:35. | :38:43.
Throttling back and still running 23.06, inside the qualifying mark. | :38:44. | :38:49.
We will have to look for the time for Jodie Williams, bearing in mind | :38:50. | :38:55.
that Bloor ran 23.65 for second in the first heat. Two more to come. | :38:56. | :39:01.
That was really good. I will let you have a look at the start! After | :39:02. | :39:10.
that... Coming off the bend, she looked so good and was able to | :39:11. | :39:13.
throttle back in the last 20. She reminds me very much of Allyson | :39:14. | :39:18.
Felix as a runner, her style and form. Just glides away, around the | :39:19. | :39:25.
bend. Off the turn, a lovely sense of balance. Really effortless. | :39:26. | :39:31.
Exactly what you want to see. It is fast and controlled and powerful. | :39:32. | :39:37.
For such a young woman, again, really good to see. Steve, our sport | :39:38. | :39:44.
has so much potential with so many youngsters being good, having | :39:45. | :39:49.
ambition, drive, aspirations to be world class. When you have the | :39:50. | :39:55.
talent, as demonstrated there... Calm and cool. Absolutely loving | :39:56. | :39:59.
what I am seeing. I am looking forward to the final. When she comes | :40:00. | :40:04.
out of the blocks, she has to drive. She can't just use her natural | :40:05. | :40:09.
talent to take her through. When you watch her running like that, natural | :40:10. | :40:14.
is a great word to use. Very relaxed, a nice smile. A huge | :40:15. | :40:18.
talent. Well, her sister could have won this event as well. She chose | :40:19. | :40:27.
the 400 metres. She is in lane eight in the 400 final. Jodie | :40:28. | :40:33.
is leading the fastest losers at the moment. A season's best for her. For | :40:34. | :40:39.
Jodie Williams. The men's pole vault. Jax Thoirs, | :40:40. | :40:44.
5.1 five. 24 years of age, in his prime. | :40:45. | :41:02.
Personal-best from two years ago. Just drifting off sideways on that. | :41:03. | :41:06.
We'll make some adjustments. Scottish record-holder. Luke Cutts, | :41:07. | :41:10.
yet to come in. 5.15, the early height, and a good | :41:11. | :41:19.
clearance. The next height is 5.30. He goes | :41:20. | :41:24.
into first at this early stage. A great clearance from Myers. I have | :41:25. | :41:42.
been looking forward to seeing him. Just 20, competed in the world | :41:43. | :41:45.
Juniors last year. He has improved this winter. Young man looking to | :41:46. | :41:50.
impress at the British championships, the world trials. No | :41:51. | :41:57.
one has qualified. 5.70 needed. Myers looking good at 5.15, a | :41:58. | :42:01.
first-time clearance. The third heat of the women's 200 | :42:02. | :42:12.
metres. Desiree Henry will be trying to impress, having watched the | :42:13. | :42:16.
anchor Williams and Shannon Hylton running so strongly. Look out also | :42:17. | :42:25.
for Walker and Baptiste. Walker does not start. So do not look out for | :42:26. | :42:28.
her because you will be looking long time. | :42:29. | :42:41.
Lucy Evans, now 34. Has gone below 24 seconds in her time. | :42:42. | :42:52.
Baptiste made the semifinal of the 100 metres, ran pretty well there. | :42:53. | :42:59.
Close to going below 24 seconds this season. Nobody in lane five. A bit | :43:00. | :43:08.
of a gap outside Desiree Henry. The red name. She chose not to compete | :43:09. | :43:14.
in the 100, but she is quickest over both 100 and 200 metres in UK terms | :43:15. | :43:16.
this year. Wood from Guildford and Godalming, | :43:17. | :43:30.
just 18. Desiree Henry has the quickest times | :43:31. | :43:41.
over the 100 and 200 this year, set in the same meeting. Sometimes | :43:42. | :43:48.
meetings throw a very quick times, but she ran very quickly in | :43:49. | :43:53.
California in April. She will have watched Bianca Williams and Shannon | :43:54. | :43:56.
Hylton, running well in the first heats. Time for Desiree Henry to | :43:57. | :44:00.
control heat three. Well, called back. The first false | :44:01. | :44:17.
start of the day. Desiree Henry was very quickly out of the blocks. I | :44:18. | :44:21.
hope it's just... Sometimes there are technical faults. There haven't | :44:22. | :44:27.
been many, but it did look a good start from Desiree Henry. The drama | :44:28. | :44:32.
begins to build. It is a bit of drama. It is really hard to see. To | :44:33. | :44:38.
cover all the lanes to see who could have made that mistake. | :44:39. | :44:42.
There was a rock in lane eight. From Fabunmi Alade. That was a long time | :44:43. | :44:55.
before. So quite difficult to see. Let's hope it's nobody. They can all | :44:56. | :45:01.
just gather themselves. Sometimes we have technical faults. It is a green | :45:02. | :45:05.
card, just a technical fault. No official offence there. One | :45:06. | :45:17.
disqualification yesterday in the 400 metres, the men. | :45:18. | :45:22.
But I haven't seen many at this meeting, so we will do it again. | :45:23. | :45:30.
Wood on the inside. Jodie Leslie. Desiree Henry goes in four. Baptiste | :45:31. | :45:36.
in six, Evans in seven and Fabunmi Alade in lane eight. | :45:37. | :45:41.
The third of four heats in the women's 200 metres. | :45:42. | :45:52.
Cleanly away this time. Bit of ground to make up, Henry. Henry | :45:53. | :46:06.
moving so smoothly around the bend. Just one to go through | :46:07. | :46:10.
automatically. Picking up the knees and driving down the home straight, | :46:11. | :46:17.
Desiree Henry. Henry can ease down, just about the same time as Shannon | :46:18. | :46:21.
Hylton. The wind helpful down the home straight. | :46:22. | :46:26.
Job done, through to the final. I am scanning the wind socks, looking up | :46:27. | :46:33.
the ones by the javelin, down the home street, there is a really | :46:34. | :46:38.
favourable wind coming across the bend, perhaps that is the reason why | :46:39. | :46:43.
we are seeing good, fast 200 metres sprinting, it is nice to see. | :46:44. | :46:48.
Desiree Henry, in the middle of the field, the most relaxed I have seen | :46:49. | :46:52.
her run, she looks very much in control of this, doesn't she? | :46:53. | :46:56.
Pumping the arms with no real tension in the shoulders, she can | :46:57. | :47:00.
just concentrate on drifting through. It is going to be | :47:01. | :47:04.
interesting when they line up for the final because the lane draw is | :47:05. | :47:11.
going to matter. Yes, not a huge amount of competition in the heats | :47:12. | :47:14.
in terms of who is winning because there are certain athletes a long | :47:15. | :47:20.
way clear. Shannon Hylton and too Bianca Williams and Desiree Henry, | :47:21. | :47:24.
but in the final, it will be blue competitor. A good run from Desiree | :47:25. | :47:33.
Henry. -- it will be uber competitive. We are all looking | :47:34. | :47:40.
forward to it. 23.08 four Desiree Henry, saving a little bit of energy | :47:41. | :47:48.
for the final. Personal best for the second-place athlete as well and too | :47:49. | :47:54.
for Alade, a little further adrift in third, but Kimberly Baptiste has | :47:55. | :47:58.
a chance of going through as a fastest loser. Great running so far, | :47:59. | :48:04.
one more to come, the final is the penultimate event on the track today | :48:05. | :48:06.
and it promises to be a cracking race. We have a moment to talk about | :48:07. | :48:12.
the new athletics integrity unit with Paula Radcliffe. You may have | :48:13. | :48:17.
heard this week it was announced it will operate separately to the IAAF | :48:18. | :48:21.
and it will hopefully Expedia eight and speed up matters to do with | :48:22. | :48:26.
drugs and to help not just the veneer but the reality of a cleaner | :48:27. | :48:31.
sport of athletics. I guess this summer of all summers, people want | :48:32. | :48:35.
to believe in performances. Will the integrity unit do that? It is really | :48:36. | :48:41.
important. The first fully independent body to look after all | :48:42. | :48:45.
matters of integrity, anti-corruption, everything we went | :48:46. | :48:48.
through in 2015, it will stop things like that in the sport, it is | :48:49. | :48:53.
anti-doping, transfer of allegiance, illegal betting, age-group minute | :48:54. | :48:57.
collation, all of those things, bringing in investigation and | :48:58. | :49:00.
prosecution under one roof, so there is no flow from the IAAF, no | :49:01. | :49:06.
information flow from the integrity unit back to the IAAF and it is | :49:07. | :49:10.
athlete centred. The first body that will not just be trying to catch | :49:11. | :49:15.
people, it is protecting every clean athlete, we want to work with the | :49:16. | :49:19.
athletes and follow-up on information from them. Why will it | :49:20. | :49:22.
work quicker and more efficiently? It will work much more efficiently, | :49:23. | :49:27.
that is not too hard, given the way things have worked in the past! It | :49:28. | :49:33.
will definitely bring in a lot more intelligence, investigation, working | :49:34. | :49:36.
a lot more on that. Yes, the testing will be improved and there will be | :49:37. | :49:41.
more testing across anti-doping. And following up on leads, listening to | :49:42. | :49:44.
the athletes, really targeting things in the right way. That will | :49:45. | :49:48.
be the area where it will move forward, and this could lead -- and | :49:49. | :49:56.
the speed of cases coming through. Big step forward? Big step forward, | :49:57. | :49:59.
the first body of its like in any sport and it will lead the way. | :50:00. | :50:04.
Important thing to say, athletics gets rightly a lot of attention but | :50:05. | :50:07.
when you compare to other sports, the depth and breadth of the | :50:08. | :50:12.
investigations they conduct, into anti-corruption matters, it is a lot | :50:13. | :50:16.
wider than other sports. Yeah, we do not hide for it, we look for it. | :50:17. | :50:23.
Thank you. The fourth of the women's 200-metre heats, Steve Cram will | :50:24. | :50:28.
talk you through this one. COMMENTATOR: The last of the four. | :50:29. | :50:37.
A quick appraisal of where we are at, the winner to go through. Four | :50:38. | :50:44.
fastest losers as well. Fastest loser spots held by Kimberly | :50:45. | :50:52.
Baptiste and others. Any of these athletes, they would have to run a | :50:53. | :50:57.
personal best, probably best Dobbin is the only one with a chance of | :50:58. | :50:58.
running a personal best. A new personal best for Dobbin in | :50:59. | :51:15.
Belgium last week, in good form, 23.72. If she were to repeat that, | :51:16. | :51:21.
she would just sneaked into the final, if she is second. She has not | :51:22. | :51:26.
raced outside of the US since Birmingham last year at the trials, | :51:27. | :51:30.
Pipi, she has been in great form, and Charlotte Oughton, the | :51:31. | :51:46.
18-year-old on the inside. Pipi is one of those who knows, get the | :51:47. | :51:53.
final, finishing the top two... This is warming up nicely, really good | :51:54. | :51:56.
performances from Bianca Williams, Shannon Hylton and Desiree Henry. | :51:57. | :52:02.
The American -based Pipi, can she look as good, look as controlled and | :52:03. | :52:08.
confident and other impressive, I have to say, as the other three? | :52:09. | :52:19.
Sat on the blocks. Probably told, for goodness' sake, don't make a | :52:20. | :52:28.
false start. She has ground to make up on Dobbin. Chasing down the | :52:29. | :52:31.
Edinburgh athlete. A little bit of work to do, you would expect her to | :52:32. | :52:37.
get there. Dobbin is going away again. Dobbin has run a brilliant | :52:38. | :52:46.
race here. The time, 23.33. She has not almost half a second off her | :52:47. | :52:51.
personal best! Pipi got left in the blocks. She stood up. Really slow | :52:52. | :52:57.
start. She could not get going. She could not really change that into a | :52:58. | :53:02.
low 23 run. She will go through, but goodness me, what a performance from | :53:03. | :53:08.
Dobbin. But will see her into the final. I like to see athletes doing | :53:09. | :53:15.
that. Looking at the four big names, it is worrying for Pipi, I have to | :53:16. | :53:19.
say, but what a great one from Dobbin. Excellent run. This is what | :53:20. | :53:23.
the Championships are all about, they throw up anomalies, people who | :53:24. | :53:27.
have life changing performances. Nearly knocked half a second off her | :53:28. | :53:34.
lifetime best! Solid all the way through. She looked like at no stage | :53:35. | :53:38.
was she going to give up any more ground. Hard from gun to tape, nice | :53:39. | :53:43.
control, nice balance. I am just wondering whether Pipi was thinking, | :53:44. | :53:47.
looked at the start list, I am nearly a second ahead, I don't | :53:48. | :53:52.
really have to try. Once somebody steps up, it is very hard to get | :53:53. | :53:57.
yourself out of that mindset and really pushed on to get the good | :53:58. | :54:03.
performance. But I think, Steve, are my rights to think both will make it | :54:04. | :54:07.
through? You are giving me the nod of approval. Let us see if Dobbin | :54:08. | :54:18.
can raise her game. -- let us see if Pipi can raise her game. She will | :54:19. | :54:22.
have to step up, she tightened up, trying to chase, could not perform. | :54:23. | :54:27.
Difficult for those American -based, they have come over just wants to | :54:28. | :54:31.
compete here and it shows, not easy to convert the fast times in | :54:32. | :54:40.
America. 23.53, that will go through as fastest loser, we will tidy that | :54:41. | :54:44.
up for you shortly, but great win by Dobbin. In the absence of Greg | :54:45. | :54:48.
Rutherford, favourite to take the long jump title, first jump here... | :54:49. | :54:56.
Dan Bramble. Good effort. He does not look please. He won last week | :54:57. | :55:01.
with eight metres flat, chasing World Championships qualifying of | :55:02. | :55:08.
8.15 to join Greg. 8.02, that was, for Dan Bramble. We have seen a | :55:09. | :55:14.
couple of athletes go clear already. Perfect conditions for pole | :55:15. | :55:19.
vaulting, warm, slight wind. Good clearance. World youth champion in | :55:20. | :55:28.
2013. Another youngster to look out for, Harry Coppell. So often | :55:29. | :55:35.
athletes come to together, we have 20-year-old, Harry Coppell, and we | :55:36. | :55:43.
have also seen another go clear at this height. 5.40 man from the sea. | :55:44. | :55:50.
Showing some really competent pole vaulting technique -- from this | :55:51. | :56:03.
year. He will advance to 5.30. Max Eves looking to match what the | :56:04. | :56:09.
youngsters have already done. Max Eaves, now 29, also goes clear, 5.1 | :56:10. | :56:15.
five. Good competition bubbling up just outside the back straight, | :56:16. | :56:19.
basking in the sunshine here at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. | :56:20. | :56:24.
Commonwealth bronze-medallist in 2010, Max. Essex Eagles, his club. | :56:25. | :56:32.
Just manoeuvred his body over that. Tidy jumps at these early heights. | :56:33. | :56:39.
Finding a groove, 5.30 is the next height. Looks like it will be that | :56:40. | :56:44.
and more to stay in contention. Max Eaves in third place. Scott Huggins, | :56:45. | :56:54.
and a little bit of pressure here, two fouls. 5.26 he has jumped this | :56:55. | :57:03.
year. We know he is capable. Good plant. That is better. Yeah, come | :57:04. | :57:14.
on! Two fouls, that would have been out, but he does go clear, stays in | :57:15. | :57:19.
the competition. Let us have a look at this. Maybe not quite as much | :57:20. | :57:28.
clearance as the previous attempts, but clearance all the same. Gets a | :57:29. | :57:35.
zero after two crosses and he will advance to the next height of 5.30. | :57:36. | :57:46.
Five athletes clear at 5.15, some really good stuff in the men's pole | :57:47. | :57:50.
vault. Fifth place for Scott Huggins because of those fouls. We said we | :57:51. | :57:58.
would tidy it up for you, the top three looked very good indeed, | :57:59. | :58:00.
Bianca Williams, Shannon Hylton, Desiree Henry, Beth Dobbin with a | :58:01. | :58:08.
surprise win going through. Dobbin does go through as a fastest loser. | :58:09. | :58:15.
-- Pipi does go through as a fastest loser. The sun continues to shine, a | :58:16. | :58:20.
few clouds, here in Birmingham. The final of the men's 400 metres | :58:21. | :58:24.
hurdles, this is how they line up. The four in the middle have all gone | :58:25. | :58:33.
below 50 seconds this season. Niall Flannery, plenty of experience as | :58:34. | :58:44.
well, on the outside. There is Niall Flannery, a man who has run 48.80 in | :58:45. | :58:53.
his time, some way off that at the moment. Second in his heat, running | :58:54. | :58:59.
on the outside. Jack Larry, youngster, 21, down to 50.25 this | :59:00. | :59:07.
year. Jack Green, what a talent he has been for a while, a career | :59:08. | :59:16.
disrupted by injury. And illness. Getting back close to his best. He | :59:17. | :59:23.
has never won this title. Jacob Paul won his heat ahead of Niall | :59:24. | :59:28.
Flannery. 49.60, new personal best this season, quick list qualifier as | :59:29. | :59:37.
well. Tom Burton goes in lane four. Again a man who has run below 50 | :59:38. | :59:42.
seconds this season. Sebastian Rodger, won his heat, went to the | :59:43. | :59:49.
Olympics with Jack Green last year. Southampton athlete James Forman, | :59:50. | :00:00.
lane two. Brunel University student. Chris McAlister, Thames Valley | :00:01. | :00:02.
Harriers, on the inside, just 21. Rodger took the title last year | :00:03. | :00:22.
ahead of Green, who has never won the title despite all his talent. | :00:23. | :00:28.
Green, looking to amend that today. He goes in lane six. | :00:29. | :00:38.
The final of the men's 400 metres hurdles. | :00:39. | :00:53.
A good lane for Rodger, able to target the men outside. The four in | :00:54. | :01:03.
the middle, Rodger, Burton, Paul and Green should be contesting this. | :01:04. | :01:11.
Rodger has a bit of work to do in lane three. A good run so far from | :01:12. | :01:20.
Tom Burton. Rodger trying to make his move. Jack Green hoping he has | :01:21. | :01:27.
saved a bit. The four in the middle contending the title. | :01:28. | :01:34.
Rodger beginning to tire a bit. Green striding clear to take the | :01:35. | :01:44.
title ahead of Paul. 49.36, Jack Green is finally the UK champion, | :01:45. | :01:47.
and he is heading to the World Championships. Paul taking second. I | :01:48. | :01:57.
thought Rodger would come through. Instead, Jacob Paul, the quickest | :01:58. | :02:01.
qualifier, came through to take second. First to Jack Green. Again, | :02:02. | :02:07.
a race, I wouldn't say he controlled it because it was close until the | :02:08. | :02:11.
final 50 metres, but he always has such great power in the latter | :02:12. | :02:16.
stages. Jack is a rangy runner, he cites the barriers very well indeed. | :02:17. | :02:21.
As he gets more into the event, he is judging it better, time and | :02:22. | :02:28.
again. In a race like this, with a lot going on around him, he just | :02:29. | :02:36.
takes his time. No stutter, allows him to run into each and every | :02:37. | :02:42.
single barrier powerfully. Rodger was starting to make a move, and a | :02:43. | :02:47.
little stutter which set him back. You can see how crucial it is. When | :02:48. | :02:52.
you check back a stride, you don't go into the barrier aggressively and | :02:53. | :02:57.
look how much distance you lose. And it is fatigued as well. A good run | :02:58. | :03:03.
by Jacob Paul just inside Jack Green. But Jack Green is the | :03:04. | :03:05.
champion. Quite a composed fashion. He is | :03:06. | :03:10.
talking to Phil. A first UK title, but more | :03:11. | :03:20.
importantly a place in London for the World Championships. After such | :03:21. | :03:25.
a season, you knew you had to mail it today. Exactly. The most nervous | :03:26. | :03:30.
I have been for a race this year. Completely different. It is all | :03:31. | :03:33.
about getting the qualifying and going to the worlds. It is not just | :03:34. | :03:38.
run as fast as I can and see what happens. Memories of London 2012, | :03:39. | :03:43.
you were just coming onto the scene and you got to the semifinals. You | :03:44. | :03:48.
saw that as a disappointment but now you think a lot differently. Yes, 20 | :03:49. | :03:53.
years old, 11th place in the world. If I can replicate that and push on, | :03:54. | :03:58.
we are looking at something special hopefully. Let's hope so, all the | :03:59. | :04:01.
best, Jack. Thank you very much. We are going to take a pause from | :04:02. | :04:12.
the athletics for a moment to pay tribute to one of our athletes who | :04:13. | :04:17.
has sadly died in a traffic accident in Jamaica earlier this year. | :04:18. | :04:22.
Jermaine Mason, who won a medal in the Olympic Games in Beijing. A | :04:23. | :04:25.
great man. A special tribute now which is going to be read by his | :04:26. | :04:27.
coach. Ladies and gentleman, I am joined by | :04:28. | :04:39.
high jump coach extraordinaire who would like to say a few words. | :04:40. | :04:44.
Ladies and gentleman, I would like to take a moment to remember | :04:45. | :04:48.
Jermaine Mason who sadly passed away this year. Jermaine will be best | :04:49. | :04:53.
known for his amazing high jump silver medal in the Beijing games in | :04:54. | :04:59.
2008. To his friends, team-mates and colleagues, he was so much more than | :05:00. | :05:04.
that. As a sportsman, he was a prolific Junior and he won silver | :05:05. | :05:08.
and bronze in the world Junior Championships in 2000 and 2002. In | :05:09. | :05:14.
2004, he won a bronze medal in the world indoor Championships. But his | :05:15. | :05:17.
Olympic medal in Beijing was his crowning moment, equalling his | :05:18. | :05:24.
lifetime best with a jump of 2.34 on the biggest stage of all. As well as | :05:25. | :05:27.
being an incredible athlete, he was a kind and gentle man. He was loved | :05:28. | :05:31.
for his wry sense of humour and was a pleasure to be around. He will be | :05:32. | :05:36.
greatly missed by everyone in the sport. And it was our honour to call | :05:37. | :05:42.
him one of our own. He liked to put on a show, and it's only fitting | :05:43. | :05:46.
that we honour this ethos. So please, we will start with a slow | :05:47. | :05:52.
clap and build towards a magnificent crescendo, and I want you to | :05:53. | :05:56.
visualise him flying over that bar with an effortless clearance. A | :05:57. | :05:59.
fitting tribute to this great athlete. So please, follow my lead. | :06:00. | :06:05.
Thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen. | :06:06. | :06:26.
I was chatting to him a bit earlier today. I know that was emotional for | :06:27. | :06:33.
him and for a lot of people who knew Germaine. A lot of athletes who knew | :06:34. | :06:37.
him as a friend as well as a great athlete. I think that was a very | :06:38. | :06:39.
fitting tribute as well. We have just seen the men's 400 | :06:40. | :06:53.
metres final. Next up will be the women's 400 metres... 400-metre | :06:54. | :07:00.
hurdles, excuse me, final. It was a comfortable win for Jack. We expect | :07:01. | :07:04.
a comfortable win for Eilidh Doyle as well. | :07:05. | :07:21.
Colin, injury problems last year. Young Nielsen is taking on the | :07:22. | :07:27.
400-metre hurdles. But suddenly Eilidh has found her mojo. Looked | :07:28. | :07:36.
good again yesterday. The European teams was a great performance. Where | :07:37. | :07:41.
do you think she is at? She is back into the groove. Most probably the | :07:42. | :07:45.
best I have seen her do the stride pattern. If she can fill herself | :07:46. | :07:50.
with that kind of confidence and bring it into this race, the speed | :07:51. | :07:54.
she showed in the European team championship, with the stride | :07:55. | :07:58.
pattern she has adopted now, fingers crossed, we will see ACs and is | :07:59. | :08:01.
best. I bumped into her in the car park. -- ACs and's best. She was | :08:02. | :08:06.
feeling confident. They will be excited to see what she | :08:07. | :08:15.
does, her mum and dad. I am hoping this young lady can return as well. | :08:16. | :08:19.
Because you always need competition, somebody biting at the heels to push | :08:20. | :08:25.
you on. Back in the day, Eilidh had Perri Shakes-Drayton... This is what | :08:26. | :08:32.
we need now, more people in the event. Chomping at the bit to get | :08:33. | :08:35.
out there and have a go. Eilidh will be in lane six. Meghan | :08:36. | :08:49.
Beesley is inside her. She has a habit of getting out there. She has | :08:50. | :08:54.
had a bit of an up and down season, understandable, not quite back to | :08:55. | :08:57.
top form yet. Not quite ready to go in the hurdles yet. | :08:58. | :09:03.
Luke Cutts in the pole vault has passed all of the early heights. His | :09:04. | :09:11.
first attempt, 5.30. He made that look easy. A good start for Luke. He | :09:12. | :09:19.
is the highest personal best, five point 83, three years ago. The world | :09:20. | :09:26.
qualifying is 5.70. Luke, looking to make the most of the glorious | :09:27. | :09:34.
conditions today. A good start, a first-time clearance at 5.30. He | :09:35. | :09:39.
In case you missed it the first time, here is the start list again. | :09:40. | :09:54.
Jessica Turner, 21, improving quickly. | :09:55. | :10:06.
The Birchfield Harriers on the outside. Plenty of local athletes, | :10:07. | :10:11.
well represented in Birmingham. Desai, I have been watching her run | :10:12. | :10:25.
since she was a wee label girl. -- a wee girl. Getting close to her best | :10:26. | :10:27.
in the heats yesterday. Eilidh Doyle wouldn't like me to | :10:28. | :10:38.
remind you she is 30 now. Perfect age to run a personal best. Meghan | :10:39. | :10:44.
Beesley will want to try and take another step back to full recovery. | :10:45. | :10:54.
56.8, 56.88, her best of the season. Granville, in good form, and Jessica | :10:55. | :11:00.
Turner will be going to the European under 23 championships with a new | :11:01. | :11:08.
personal best this year, 56.68. She looked pretty good in qualifying | :11:09. | :11:09.
yesterday. Knight from Herne Hill Harriers on | :11:10. | :11:28.
the inside. Another to set a personal best this year. Quite a few | :11:29. | :11:33.
women looking at these British Championships to improve on where | :11:34. | :11:36.
they are at in their careers, but for Eilidh the first thing is to | :11:37. | :11:41.
guarantee selection. We think that shouldn't be a problem at all. Let's | :11:42. | :11:45.
see how quick she can do. And what can Meghan Beesley do? The | :11:46. | :11:52.
qualifying time is 56.1. Jessica Turner and Meghan Beesley are within | :11:53. | :11:55.
about seven tenths of that. Colin, keeping an eye on the stride | :11:56. | :12:06.
pattern. Eilidh Doyle has started quickly, as has Meghan Beesley. Not | :12:07. | :12:08.
much to choose between them. Eilidh Doyle, looking strong and | :12:09. | :12:20.
quick, as she has done. A bit untidy from Jessica Turner in lane three. | :12:21. | :12:26.
Doyle starting to stamp her authority, moving away from Meghan | :12:27. | :12:30.
Beesley. Turner trying to come into it in the home straight, but Meghan | :12:31. | :12:34.
Beesley is running strong. A very good run but can she hold it | :12:35. | :12:40.
together? Granville is going well. Doyle has a five-metre lead. | :12:41. | :12:48.
Turner trying to get an there ahead of Meghan Beesley. It's going to be | :12:49. | :12:57.
Eilidh Doyle, 55 point six. Beesley hangs on for second, which will give | :12:58. | :13:02.
her the chance to chase the time somewhere else, she won't be inside | :13:03. | :13:06.
the qualifying time today. Jessica Turner in third. Colin, it is | :13:07. | :13:13.
awkward for Eilidh because winning here... It's not like it is not good | :13:14. | :13:18.
enough, she can't win, we expect her to win, but then we get to pull it | :13:19. | :13:22.
apart, praise it, whatever you want. What did you make of it? Looking | :13:23. | :13:29.
across the back straight, it is quite blustery, Steve. The hurdle | :13:30. | :13:32.
don't particularly enjoy a head wind down the back straight. In the | :13:33. | :13:37.
sprint am of the 200 metres, there has been a tale wins down the home | :13:38. | :13:41.
straight, running into the wind down the back straight. -- a tailwind | :13:42. | :13:47.
down the home straight. But the key thing is, gaining experience all the | :13:48. | :13:51.
time. At the Major Championship, you never know, you could be running | :13:52. | :13:55.
into a headwind down the back straight. You have to gather this | :13:56. | :13:58.
information and produce the best performance you can. She fell off | :13:59. | :14:04.
the final barrier but it doesn't matter, it is just gaining | :14:05. | :14:07.
experience, putting on and taking the title, which she has done | :14:08. | :14:10.
comfortably. The real interest for me was Meghan because she attacked | :14:11. | :14:16.
this race. Never afraid to give it a go, always challenging herself, and | :14:17. | :14:21.
she has been rewarded with a best time of the season. Second, | :14:22. | :14:25.
difficult conditions, let's see what she can produce later on. I think | :14:26. | :14:30.
that is the key. There is more time for people to understand... First | :14:31. | :14:35.
wave will be picked this week based on the top two, who has got the | :14:36. | :14:42.
time. And then you have until I think the 25th, plenty of time, a | :14:43. | :14:47.
bit unusual, so Meghan Beesley will hope this is a stepping stone | :14:48. | :14:50.
towards 56.1 she needs. Steve, it is job done for this | :14:51. | :15:02.
woman. Eilidh I suppose that is what it is all about, but you wanted to | :15:03. | :15:07.
get more in terms of how far you can push the time? From my point of view | :15:08. | :15:14.
it was really messy. I kind of lost my stride Hatton in the last 200, | :15:15. | :15:20.
but yeah, the job today was to win. -- my stride pattern. Just need to | :15:21. | :15:25.
sort that race out if I want to contend in the worlds. Are you | :15:26. | :15:32.
confident you can do that? Last week showed I am in good shape, it is | :15:33. | :15:35.
just all about getting the right rhythm. Some solid races | :15:36. | :15:39.
back-to-back. Well done on another British title. Thanks very much. | :15:40. | :15:47.
She will be happy to have got this weekend done and dusted, another | :15:48. | :15:55.
couple of races, 55.59, as Colin was saying, a couple of tenths quicker | :15:56. | :16:03.
for Meghan Beesley, moving in the right direction. Jessica Turner, | :16:04. | :16:07.
solid third. She can look forward to the European under 23 championships. | :16:08. | :16:14.
Next up on the track, the men's 200-metre heats. Many athletes were | :16:15. | :16:17.
involved yesterday in the 100 metres. Here is the final now with | :16:18. | :16:23.
Steve Cram. The line-up for the final... | :16:24. | :16:36.
What an open door this is for James Dasaolu. Harry gets a pretty good | :16:37. | :16:56.
start. Reece Prescod finishing very quickly Reece Prescod and James | :16:57. | :17:02.
Dasaolu, they will be guaranteed a place in the 100 metres. Reece | :17:03. | :17:12.
Prescod, the 21-year-old, Enfield and Haringey club, the winner, | :17:13. | :17:19.
10.09, the winning time. James Dasaolu, he confirms his place in | :17:20. | :17:23.
the team, 10.11. Well done to those two. Intrigue for the selectors for | :17:24. | :17:29.
the third spot. I'm just glad over the last year, it has been a | :17:30. | :17:35.
struggle for me. I am happy that now I can actually get ready for the | :17:36. | :17:40.
World Championships in London, at home. British trials, the goal is | :17:41. | :17:43.
always to finish the top two and make the team and I have done that. | :17:44. | :17:47.
Got a good start. Really happy with my race, set it up well, but the | :17:48. | :17:52.
guide, a few lanes out of me, came to. We're both through, that is all | :17:53. | :17:57.
that counts, that is all the day was about. Part of this weekend is | :17:58. | :18:04.
obviously about qualifying for the World Championships, a large part, | :18:05. | :18:06.
but the selectors have a dilemma after the 100 metres with CJ Ujah | :18:07. | :18:14.
and his problems and add Jimmy they -- Adam Gemili choosing not to | :18:15. | :18:20.
compete in this. Simon Hughes does choose to compete the good, -- | :18:21. | :18:32.
compete though, going in lane four. Toby Harris, just 18, already an | :18:33. | :18:36.
age-group international for Great Britain. | :18:37. | :18:48.
Sam Landsborough, just one to go through from this heat. Sam Miller, | :18:49. | :19:01.
forced into running the relay when Williams pulled out, and struggled a | :19:02. | :19:04.
bit in the four by four, but that was an ask beyond him. He has gone | :19:05. | :19:15.
below 21 seconds in his time, Tobais, but not this season. Donald | :19:16. | :19:20.
Hughes, he missed we are with a knee ligament problem. At Beijing, he let | :19:21. | :19:24.
on the scene, fifth in the final, and getting that close to that sort | :19:25. | :19:34.
of running the, Michael Warner, ran 100 and BB yesterday, fairly modest, | :19:35. | :19:43.
10.66. Williams, he has gone below 21 this season, just 21 himself. The | :19:44. | :19:53.
100 metres was fairly competitive, pretty interesting, well won by | :19:54. | :19:58.
Reece Prescod. The 200 metres is fascinating. Not yet to the blocks, | :19:59. | :20:09.
the start asking them to stand up. Zharnel Hughes, as I mentioned, like | :20:10. | :20:16.
so many sprinters who are slightly taller than average and talented, | :20:17. | :20:20.
compared to Usain Bolt, an unfair comparison for any sprinter, but the | :20:21. | :20:27.
one is certainly hugely talented. Absolutely. Beautiful at his very | :20:28. | :20:32.
best. He literally glides around the bend. Very tall runner. Tends to be | :20:33. | :20:37.
quite composed, even when he is not as sharp, keeps his composure. Fifth | :20:38. | :20:46.
in the World Championships as a 19-year-old in Beijing, goes here in | :20:47. | :20:50.
the first four heats of the men's 200. It is a recall. Is it us? I | :20:51. | :21:01.
think it is when we get together, always a dodgy start! We did have | :21:02. | :21:08.
that in the women's 200 heats and one they were called back and there | :21:09. | :21:12.
was not anything obvious and it does not look to be anything obvious | :21:13. | :21:18.
here. Maybe just a green card or someone given their marching orders. | :21:19. | :21:22.
I was focusing on Zharnel Hughes and he certainly did not seem to be too | :21:23. | :21:29.
early out of the blocks. I am looking if anything at Sam Miller, | :21:30. | :21:34.
but I certainly do not want to cast naked eye aspersions on it. It may | :21:35. | :21:45.
well just be a green card again. A receipt you talked about. Let us | :21:46. | :22:00.
see. Lane three has been disqualified, Michael Warner, given | :22:01. | :22:04.
the Shepherd's crook. Time to disrobe and watch. Now it is | :22:05. | :22:22.
just Tom Williams, Zharnel Hughes, nobody in the lane inside him, | :22:23. | :22:31.
Tobais, Sam Miller, Sam Landsborough and Toby Harries, just one to go | :22:32. | :22:36.
through automatically. Starter not happy. This event has the most | :22:37. | :22:45.
qualifiers of any at the World Championship level... General | :22:46. | :22:49.
milling around from the athletes. Unsettling. You do not often see it | :22:50. | :22:54.
in 200 metres, but the starter is unhappy with something. Conduct | :22:55. | :23:09.
warning for Zharnel Hughes. Possibly he was taking a little bit of time | :23:10. | :23:14.
into his blocks. There are many people right outside him who will be | :23:15. | :23:17.
settled far earlier. Once you have been called for the blocks, you have | :23:18. | :23:22.
to get in them, not too much gamesmanship. The Colin Jackson fall | :23:23. | :23:31.
into the blocks, that was theatrical! Psyching out opponents. | :23:32. | :23:39.
Ready once again for the first of four heats in the men's 200 metres. | :23:40. | :23:45.
Away they go this time. Zharnel Hughes in the black and white of | :23:46. | :23:50.
Shaftesbury and Barnet. A little bit of work to do with Tobais going off | :23:51. | :23:55.
strongly. Easing his way around the bend, look so impressive from | :23:56. | :24:01.
Zharnel Hughes. Able to look around, right, left, right again, strolls | :24:02. | :24:07.
across the line in a time of 20.66, and he does look good again, looks | :24:08. | :24:11.
comfortable, and all of that talent which has been disrupted a little | :24:12. | :24:14.
bit by injury over the last couple of years is perhaps going to be | :24:15. | :24:18.
fulfilled once again. He will be a force in this final, no doubt about | :24:19. | :24:21.
that. There are other strong contenders. Adam Gemili, Mitchell | :24:22. | :24:26.
Blake, others. But Zharnel Hughes lays down a marker. Good to see him | :24:27. | :24:33.
run so well and nice and controlled. 200 metres, as we mentioned earlier, | :24:34. | :24:38.
it is about the pace, getting a good, fast cadence around the bend, | :24:39. | :24:42.
your stride length is a little bit shorter because of the fact the bend | :24:43. | :24:47.
constricts your stride length, only on the home straight can you open up | :24:48. | :24:52.
and really extend and when you open up and extend, you do not want to | :24:53. | :24:57.
put pressure on yourself. It zaps energy. What Zharnel Hughes did was | :24:58. | :25:03.
very good. Nice transition. Very easy, gliding down the home | :25:04. | :25:08.
straight, checking left and right. You do not need to worry if you | :25:09. | :25:13.
dress out of his lane, he would not be disqualified, even if he drifts | :25:14. | :25:18.
too far right or left, it would be fine, as long as he is not impeding | :25:19. | :25:23.
anybody. Helping wind. Sam Miller finished strongly as well to take | :25:24. | :25:30.
second place. Just one automatic qualifier and the four fastest | :25:31. | :25:33.
losers so Sam Miller has a chance. Personal best for Toby Harries as | :25:34. | :25:38.
well. Zharnel Hughes a long way clear of winning the first heat of | :25:39. | :25:45.
the men's 200 metres. Time to revisit what is becoming a good | :25:46. | :25:52.
competition, we are now at 5.40. Slow on the bend. Bring in Toni | :25:53. | :25:59.
Minichiello, what did you make of that? He decelerated a little bit, | :26:00. | :26:05.
got underneath it. If he gets the pole at earlier and keeps | :26:06. | :26:09.
accelerating into the box, that is the box where the poll goes into, | :26:10. | :26:13.
really, I think he could improve. Get the 5.50 the next time. | :26:14. | :26:19.
Clearance, season's best, runner-up last year. He has jumped 5.25, going | :26:20. | :26:28.
well. 5.50 on the next height. Here is your winner from 2016, Luke | :26:29. | :26:38.
Cutts. He has only had one jump at 5.30. Looking to match what he has | :26:39. | :26:52.
just seen Jack Straw -- Jax Thoirs doing. He was sat down for the best | :26:53. | :26:57.
part of an hour before the competition and now he is getting | :26:58. | :27:00.
into the comfortable heights he is well capable of. He gets the pole | :27:01. | :27:04.
out early, carries his speed in, up and over. Hopefully a season's best | :27:05. | :27:11.
for him. Luke Cutts looking good, out in front, in the lead, 5.50 next | :27:12. | :27:19.
height, 5.70 if they want to get on the team for the World Championships | :27:20. | :27:32.
in London in a month. Also near the poll vote on the back straight, | :27:33. | :27:36.
200-metre start, we move on the two, through safely and Nethaneel | :27:37. | :27:44.
Mitchell-Blake, the next two step upon the stage, and it really is | :27:45. | :27:48.
warming up to be a cracking 200-metre final, as long as the main | :27:49. | :27:52.
contenders get through. Shenanigans yesterday around who was going to | :27:53. | :27:56.
run what. Rate fun in the warm up area. Little games of chess being | :27:57. | :28:00.
played among the coaches, whispering going on, he is only doing the 200? | :28:01. | :28:06.
Is he? Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake could have run their 100 but he is | :28:07. | :28:10.
only in the 200 metres. Really looking forward to seeing him | :28:11. | :28:14.
compete. Going through them one by one first of all. Dan Putnam on the | :28:15. | :28:24.
outside, 25. Just the winner to go through. Sam Miller's time was 25.85 | :28:25. | :28:33.
in second place. Thomas Somers, same training group with Pozzi and | :28:34. | :28:43.
others, good group. 18-year-old Connor Wood, big talent, yet to | :28:44. | :28:52.
break 21 seconds. This man has already gone under 20 seconds, not | :28:53. | :28:59.
this year, been close, 20.04, chasing home the great new hope for | :29:00. | :29:05.
American sprinting recently. We do not see him racing outside of the US | :29:06. | :29:07.
very often. Looking forward to seeing him here. Edmond Amaning, new | :29:08. | :29:15.
personal best in the British league. Talk about American Everything, | :29:16. | :29:18.
British league still does it for some. Kyle Ennis, British university | :29:19. | :29:25.
championships winner in May. Peter Shand, local man, trained by Tony | :29:26. | :29:34.
Hadley, he is in lane two. We have not mentioned Miguel Francis, might | :29:35. | :29:40.
throw that in later, another transfer, injured for the season | :29:41. | :29:44.
though, he was meant to be in this mix as well, another training | :29:45. | :29:50.
partner of Usain Bolt, cleared to run for Great Britain since April, | :29:51. | :29:55.
but not expecting to see him. Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, he has | :29:56. | :30:01.
seen Zharnel Hughes put on a show, let us see what we get from him. | :30:02. | :30:08.
Safely away, not a bad start from Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. | :30:09. | :30:19.
A little untidy off the bend, but looks good, strong. Comfortable. | :30:20. | :30:24.
Checking back. These heats are Lee no problem for | :30:25. | :30:35.
the top guys. In the low 22nd shape. -- really no problem. What out well. | :30:36. | :30:43.
It is going to be interesting. Really good natural 100 metres | :30:44. | :30:50.
speed. Danny Talbot, such a good bend runner. Gemili in the mix. All | :30:51. | :30:56.
different 200-metre runners. Very different builds, some are more | :30:57. | :31:01.
powerful and explosive, some are more balanced, some or more | :31:02. | :31:04.
endurance -based, speed based. This is the good thing about 200 metres. | :31:05. | :31:12.
John Reid -- John Regis was huge compared to some of the other | :31:13. | :31:13.
runners. He blasted out of the blocks, got | :31:14. | :31:21.
himself in a good position to control the race, and then shutdown | :31:22. | :31:27.
and relax and enjoyed it. Doesn't have to accelerate with somebody | :31:28. | :31:30.
coming up on his shoulder. Well clear of the field. Of course he's | :31:31. | :31:36.
going to get a good lane draw, but where is it going to be? I am | :31:37. | :31:38.
excited already. We expect the big four, someone | :31:39. | :31:50.
won't be happy with the lane draw. Incidentally, John Regis was not | :31:51. | :31:53.
bigger than most sprinters, he was bigger than all! | :31:54. | :32:02.
Somers is a fastest loser at the moment with two more heats to come. | :32:03. | :32:08.
Very exciting heats so far. The top two easing down with so much in the | :32:09. | :32:15.
tank, it should be a great final this afternoon. I have had a message | :32:16. | :32:20.
from home asking me why I am in a coat when it looks very warm. It is | :32:21. | :32:25.
a bit chilly in the studio. A bit of a wind tunnel. They are just being | :32:26. | :32:32.
brave without their jackets! A gorgeous day in Birmingham. But the | :32:33. | :32:35.
track could look very different in a few years if Birmingham wins its | :32:36. | :32:41.
opportunity to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022, after Durban pulled | :32:42. | :32:45.
out. The world indoors coming to Birmingham next year. They will be | :32:46. | :32:51.
held early next spring, February am here. So the city really... March, | :32:52. | :32:58.
actually. They are looking to stamp themselves as an athletics capital. | :32:59. | :33:04.
They really are. Liverpool are also a candidate for 2022. Absolutely, | :33:05. | :33:11.
Denise is married to a man from Liverpool! It has been my training | :33:12. | :33:18.
track. I have seen it developed, and both cities are the most | :33:19. | :33:21.
progressive, I think, in the last ten years, in terms of development | :33:22. | :33:25.
and what they can offer. Birmingham in particular has sport at its | :33:26. | :33:29.
heart, it has done for many years. Big regeneration plans for the | :33:30. | :33:34.
stadium and the whole Commonwealth Games site. I think it is fantastic | :33:35. | :33:38.
for the young people in this city that look to sport to push them | :33:39. | :33:42.
through their lives. The Commonwealth Games is not just about | :33:43. | :33:47.
athletics, but regeneration of this stadium would be fantastic. We know | :33:48. | :33:52.
from Manchester, Glasgow, the London Olympics how well these nations and | :33:53. | :33:57.
regions put on these big events. Absolutely, I have a very special | :33:58. | :34:00.
and fond memories of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. | :34:01. | :34:03.
There is nothing like that ability to compete in a Championships as big | :34:04. | :34:08.
as a Commonwealth Games in a home country. You know the stadiums will | :34:09. | :34:12.
be full and it will inspire youngsters to take up the sport. And | :34:13. | :34:18.
we maybe I will to take our jackets off that summer, who knows? Let's | :34:19. | :34:23.
get down for heat three of the men's 200 metres. Danny Talbot, the man to | :34:24. | :34:25.
watch, Andrew. He certainly is, he is running well, | :34:26. | :34:35.
in lane six. Just one going through automatically. | :34:36. | :34:55.
Snaith, 21, he has gone below 21 seconds. | :34:56. | :35:04.
Broome, the youngest in the line-up at 20. | :35:05. | :35:13.
Talbot ran 20.31 last month. He ran under 20 seconds before that. | :35:14. | :35:28.
Reid, 20.79 and Lee Valley last month. | :35:29. | :35:37.
Gladman, a new personal best of 21.27 this season. | :35:38. | :35:45.
Confidence is a wonderful thing. Confidence Lawson, in lane three. | :35:46. | :35:52.
Max Montpellier ran well in the Championships last month. A new | :35:53. | :36:03.
personal best. Zharnel Hughes and Nethaneel | :36:04. | :36:24.
Mitchell-Blake, Goodwin is already in their heats. Now it is Danny | :36:25. | :36:31.
Talbot's turn to try and impress. -- good winners already in their heats. | :36:32. | :36:37.
One goes through automatically, and Danny Talbot has company inside from | :36:38. | :36:55.
Reid. He could not ease down too much. 20.44 from Danny Talbot, so | :36:56. | :37:03.
Reid will have been close to his personal best. Probably broken it. | :37:04. | :37:09.
Danny Talbot, we expected him to win, he delivers and moves through | :37:10. | :37:13.
to the final. We have had problems with the clock, so let's hope that | :37:14. | :37:20.
time, 20.4 for, is pretty accurate. Danny has improved this year. I have | :37:21. | :37:25.
watched him develop. His shoulders seem to be a little bit stronger. | :37:26. | :37:30.
Which is only going to put him in a better position off the bend, when | :37:31. | :37:35.
you need to generate power. It is how fast you move your arms, how | :37:36. | :37:41.
quickly your legs will go. Not the other way around. Really important | :37:42. | :37:45.
to get the good strength. Danny has the ability to maintain speed. Once | :37:46. | :37:50.
he gets up to top speed, he can hang on in there. Looking around, he | :37:51. | :37:56.
drifted down the home straight. Loving the conditions. Come the | :37:57. | :37:59.
final, if it is like this, it is going to be impressive. A personal | :38:00. | :38:05.
best from Reid. He looked inside and he could hear somebody, Talbot. A | :38:06. | :38:11.
legal wind, a good run from Danny Talbot and a very good run from Leon | :38:12. | :38:16.
Reid, taking three hundredths of a second off his personal best. In | :38:17. | :38:21.
prime position for one of the fastest losers races. -- places. | :38:22. | :38:48.
It's been fairly comfortable qualification... Reid really did | :38:49. | :38:53.
push through. Gave Danny Talbot something to think about. A good | :38:54. | :38:59.
personal best. Four fastest loser spots. Adam Gemili, the last of the | :39:00. | :39:01.
big names, goes next in heat four. As they were a year ago. Luke Cutts | :39:02. | :39:11.
in first, Jax Thoirs in second. Looking down the pole vault | :39:12. | :39:43.
scorecard, they have both been given first, they both have a clean sheet | :39:44. | :39:45.
up to 5.4. So we may have a jump off. Just the | :39:46. | :39:58.
one attempt in a jump off. If they both go clear, it goes up. If they | :39:59. | :40:03.
both bowl, it goes down, until we get a winner. -- if they both foul. | :40:04. | :40:17.
Onto the final heat. The men's 200. Adam Gemili. It has been a difficult | :40:18. | :40:29.
season, maybe frustrating is the word to use for him, at 100 and 200. | :40:30. | :40:36.
He decided not to run the 100 metres yesterday. And he saw Reece Prescod | :40:37. | :40:41.
and James Dasaolu book their place. CJ pulled up with cramp so didn't | :40:42. | :40:45.
run the final. A bit of a dilemma. Do the selectors look to the fastest | :40:46. | :40:50.
man so far this year, CJ Ujah, or Adam Gemili call? | :40:51. | :40:56.
He needs to step up in terms of how he has been running this season. | :40:57. | :41:14.
Elliott Powell has had a couple of those qualifications recently. | :41:15. | :41:28.
Including the under 23 championships last week. Watch out for that. | :41:29. | :41:38.
This man is based in Arkansas. All of his races so far this season have | :41:39. | :41:43.
been in the US and he has run 20.65. There will be a big cheer for Adam | :41:44. | :41:57.
Gemili. It would be a story if he did not | :41:58. | :42:09.
make an individual run. Relay spots available. | :42:10. | :42:26.
Is that Herne Hill, that rest? -- vest? He ran his personal best in | :42:27. | :42:37.
the semifinal of the under 23s last week. Fifth in the final. | :42:38. | :42:42.
Adam Gemili has seen the other guys, Hughes, Mitchell-Blake and Danny | :42:43. | :42:50.
Talbot go through without any problems and actually look | :42:51. | :42:56.
impressive. Danny had to keep his foot on the accelerator a little bit | :42:57. | :42:57.
as Leon Read pushed him. Gemili has Ejiajuekwu outside. I | :42:58. | :43:05.
wonder how he will go, in lane six? A decent start from Gemili. | :43:06. | :43:13.
Ejiajuekwu really fast in lane six. Thumbs up, that is good. Just a | :43:14. | :43:49.
little bit worried, call in. Looked a little bit tight. One of those | :43:50. | :43:53.
races where if he grabbed something, I would not have been surprised. He | :43:54. | :43:58.
was made to work hard. Ejiajuekwu got out well around the top bend, a | :43:59. | :44:03.
20.65 man this year. He wasn't going to have it easy. Give us your | :44:04. | :44:11.
analysis, Colin. Yeah, it was an interesting run by Adam. I expected | :44:12. | :44:16.
him to do a bit more around the bend if I am honest. Perhaps stamp his | :44:17. | :44:20.
authority. He had to work down the home straight. Even as he came | :44:21. | :44:24.
through the line, watching his expression, he didn't seem really | :44:25. | :44:28.
happy. We have seen him far more buoyant and bubbly. I'm not sure if | :44:29. | :44:33.
he is carrying something. Maybe frustrating him. As you mentioned, | :44:34. | :44:37.
it has been a frustrating year for him from the very beginning. This | :44:38. | :44:43.
year, or all year, Steve, there is no hiding place in men's sprinting. | :44:44. | :44:48.
No luxury that you are outstanding so you have to come to these | :44:49. | :44:52.
championships, these trials, and you are going to have to perform. He | :44:53. | :44:56.
will have seen his opponents and be thinking, it's going to be tough. | :44:57. | :45:01.
But he has been here before, under 20 seconds, under ten seconds for | :45:02. | :45:05.
the 100 metres. The only sprinter to do that, so let's hope he can lie on | :45:06. | :45:11.
his ASICS be to pull him through. -- he can rely on his basics bead to | :45:12. | :45:16.
pull him through. Let's hope there is more to come from Adam Gemili, | :45:17. | :45:20.
because you feel he will have to step up. | :45:21. | :45:25.
20.88 will be quick enough to go through as a fastest loser by my | :45:26. | :45:31.
calculations. They are not always correct! But we will confirm it. | :45:32. | :45:38.
I guess you could say going with form, those heats, the winners were | :45:39. | :45:47.
the ones we had our eye on, Gemili, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, Danny | :45:48. | :45:52.
Talbot, Zharnel Hughes. You can have a look at the form of these two and | :45:53. | :46:01.
Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, he does not race here very much, he looked | :46:02. | :46:07.
like a man who is in confidence, easing up with 40 to go. That is | :46:08. | :46:11.
right. We do not get to see these athletes racing in trials very | :46:12. | :46:15.
often, we do not get to see them training often, so it is important | :46:16. | :46:20.
we get to look at them, look at the silky smooth relaxed shoulders. You | :46:21. | :46:24.
always look for the tension, if there is tension in the shoulders. | :46:25. | :46:30.
Zharnel Hughes, effortless. Mitchell Blake again, holding his form, not | :46:31. | :46:34.
working too hard. It is hard to criticise when you are not under | :46:35. | :46:38.
pressure. Just lovely. Great to see these guys showing great early | :46:39. | :46:43.
season form and they look great here. Final in two hours. Once they | :46:44. | :46:49.
feel the race is won and they have secured the berth in the final and | :46:50. | :46:53.
they felt confident to ease up. The next two were more competitive | :46:54. | :46:58.
perhaps, Adam Gemili and Danny Talbot, pushing it more to the line, | :46:59. | :47:02.
Gemili in particular, what did you make of his performance? A lot of | :47:03. | :47:07.
answers in Adam's head after watching that raised. It did not | :47:08. | :47:10.
look like the Adam we are used to seeing. We are used to seeing the | :47:11. | :47:15.
strong bent and the transition on the curve was not there, fighting | :47:16. | :47:20.
all the way. Is he carrying an injury, like Colin said? Has he been | :47:21. | :47:25.
struggling? I have been looking at the wider field and his coaching | :47:26. | :47:30.
group, he has moved to Holland, working with Rider, and I wonder if | :47:31. | :47:34.
there is something in the training not quite right because another has | :47:35. | :47:38.
not looked in silky smooth form this season so far. In contrast, Danny, | :47:39. | :47:44.
very relaxed, yes, he has had to put his foot down, but I think he is in | :47:45. | :47:49.
a confident place. Last year, he raced really well, great in the | :47:50. | :47:52.
championships. I think he is carrying that confidence into his | :47:53. | :47:58.
running. Adam, not social. Adam has moved to Holland, as you mentioned, | :47:59. | :48:01.
new training group, he said he felt he had his whole sprinting knowledge | :48:02. | :48:07.
broken down and started again almost and rebuilt and when you have done | :48:08. | :48:11.
what he has done and achieved what he has achieved, two Olympic Games, | :48:12. | :48:15.
it must be quite a big thing for an athlete to go through. You find that | :48:16. | :48:20.
post-Olympics athletes need to think about what the next Olympics cycle | :48:21. | :48:23.
will look like. Adam has learnt a lot and it is finding the happy | :48:24. | :48:29.
medium, the balance. Taking on new training, I'm trying to compete, it | :48:30. | :48:33.
might just not be there yet, but he has time. Next up, Denise, the | :48:34. | :48:40.
women's steeplechase. The men's was yesterday and it was great. These | :48:41. | :48:47.
two in first and second macro have qualified for the World | :48:48. | :48:49.
Championships in London in August. They gave a great interview to fill, | :48:50. | :48:56.
great characters, looking forward to seeing them in London. Let us get | :48:57. | :49:01.
out there for the women and Andrew Cotter. Slightly different story in | :49:02. | :49:05.
that Lennie Waite should win, in the absence of real competition. She has | :49:06. | :49:10.
not quite got the qualifying standard yet for the world. Might be | :49:11. | :49:14.
difficult for her to get it today. That is the line-up for the final of | :49:15. | :49:19.
the women's 3000 metres steeplechase. Charlotte Taylor-Green | :49:20. | :49:26.
has gone below ten minutes this season. | :49:27. | :49:36.
Aimee Pratt, 19, gone below ten minutes. Lennie Waite had a good run | :49:37. | :49:43.
last week in the European team Championships, dragged along to a | :49:44. | :49:48.
big season's best time, but still outside the qualifying time, 9.42, | :49:49. | :49:58.
it is. She ran 9.43 in Lille. Rosie Clarke who won last year, she picked | :49:59. | :50:01.
up an injury. She has got the qualifying time. Personal best at | :50:02. | :50:10.
Stanford in May, but then picked up an injury, so not here to defend the | :50:11. | :50:14.
title. She beat Lennie Waite last year. Lennie Waite, spends a lot of | :50:15. | :50:20.
time in the United States, when the university and then Houston in Texas | :50:21. | :50:23.
and she has been based in the States for a while. Again, we have talked | :50:24. | :50:27.
about this a lot, Paula, about the dearth of real talent in the women's | :50:28. | :50:33.
steeplechase in the UK. There is a vacuum for someone to step into. I | :50:34. | :50:39.
do wonder if sometimes when we are... Athletes are scared of | :50:40. | :50:42.
running this event because it can be so hard on the body. Going over the | :50:43. | :50:48.
barriers, it is much harder than running on the flat. It definitely | :50:49. | :50:55.
is. That was the primary reason for an athlete making the move to 5000 | :50:56. | :50:59.
metres. She has been successful so I'm sure she has got no regrets. It | :51:00. | :51:03.
was the fact she had a venue vulnerable foot injury caused by the | :51:04. | :51:07.
water jump back in London Diamond League years ago and the knock-on | :51:08. | :51:12.
repercussions meant she was not able to get her body strong enough to | :51:13. | :51:15.
cope with the demands of steeplechasing and it is a special | :51:16. | :51:22.
way you have to run the race, you cannot run the same way you would | :51:23. | :51:27.
want us and the flat or 5000 metres. You have to save enough in your legs | :51:28. | :51:31.
to run strongly over the final lap because you have to still clear the | :51:32. | :51:35.
barriers. We would like to have seen Rosie Clarke here, she would have | :51:36. | :51:38.
loved to being here. Disappointed not to be here to defend the title. | :51:39. | :51:42.
It would've been a good race, they would have been able to drag a good | :51:43. | :51:46.
time out of each other. This is going to be difficult for Lennie | :51:47. | :51:49.
Waite. She should move a little bit clear and effectively be running on | :51:50. | :51:52.
her own. I do not think the qualifying standard will happen | :51:53. | :51:56.
today. No, I do not think so. I think she is capable of it, Lennie | :51:57. | :52:05.
Waite. She struggled to get into a groove at the start of the season. | :52:06. | :52:07.
Running a couple of steeplechases out of ten minutes and struggling to | :52:08. | :52:10.
find form. She has a personal best of 9.35 and the way she ran in | :52:11. | :52:18.
Lille, she ended up close to the qualifying time. Getting it today, | :52:19. | :52:23.
in the wind and on her own, it is a different story. I think she will | :52:24. | :52:26.
just concentrate on coming away with a victory today. Like you say, it | :52:27. | :52:31.
would have been nice to see her race against Rosie Clarke, to have them | :52:32. | :52:35.
work together. Rosie has taken a big step forward this year and it would | :52:36. | :52:38.
have been nice to see them race together and push each other on | :52:39. | :52:42.
towards the time. Charlotte Taylor-Green just sitting in a bad | :52:43. | :52:48.
third-place, as we see Iona Lake coming through to push the pace a | :52:49. | :52:53.
bit -- just sitting in a bad third-place. They want to improve | :52:54. | :52:57.
their personal bests and race world today. Lennie Waite is sitting | :52:58. | :53:01.
comfortably near the front at the moment. Iona Lake for company just | :53:02. | :53:07.
now. Lennie Waite we suspect, just biding her time in this 3000 metres | :53:08. | :53:13.
women's steeplechase. Pole vault, dead heat at the end of normal time. | :53:14. | :53:17.
The pole vault equivalent of a penalty shoot out between Jax Thoirs | :53:18. | :53:23.
and Luke Cutts. They have a ready started the next height of 5.45 | :53:24. | :53:31.
after both fouling up 5.5 zero. Jax Thoirs goes first. Not to be. He has | :53:32. | :53:37.
opened the door for Luke Cutts. Jax Thoirs fouled at 5.50 in the first | :53:38. | :53:43.
of the jump of heights. Shake of his head, he knows it is an opportunity | :53:44. | :53:48.
for Luke Cutts to close the door and relegate him to second place. | :53:49. | :53:52.
Sharing first place at the end of normal play, as I say, both cleared | :53:53. | :54:02.
5.40, season's best for Jax Thoirs. Luke Cutts, he knows that after four | :54:03. | :54:07.
consecutive fouls, we are in a jump of situation where if he goes clear, | :54:08. | :54:12.
he wins. One attempt in a jump off, do or die for Luke Cutts. Jax Thoirs | :54:13. | :54:20.
can only watch on and see the man who beat him last year at the | :54:21. | :54:24.
British championships, world trials this year, 5:45... He gets it. It is | :54:25. | :54:34.
a victory for Jack -- Luke Cutts. Successful defence again of his | :54:35. | :54:41.
British title. Big puff of the cheeks, may be made hard work of | :54:42. | :54:45.
that, he had been in check, jumped 5.50 a month ago in Switzerland. | :54:46. | :54:51.
Maybe expected a little more today. He has done enough to win by the | :54:52. | :54:57.
smallest of margins, a jump off was needed to separate Luke Cutts and | :54:58. | :55:04.
Jax Thoirs and it is a win for the Commonwealth silver-medallist in | :55:05. | :55:10.
2014 in Glasgow, Luke Cutts. He takes the victory. Confirmation, | :55:11. | :55:23.
5.45 clearance. There is confirmation of the final standings | :55:24. | :55:28.
in the men's pole vault. Thrilling finale. 5.45, the best, for Luke | :55:29. | :55:35.
Cutts. Ahead of Jax Thoirs. In your absence, Iona Lake decided to take | :55:36. | :55:41.
it on, opened up a five, six-metre gap at one stage, then Lennie Waite | :55:42. | :55:46.
decided to wake up and they are running side-by-side just about now. | :55:47. | :55:50.
Iona Lake has not run a steeplechase this season, she has a personal best | :55:51. | :55:56.
in the field second quickest, but still only a modest 9.56 runner, she | :55:57. | :56:01.
has only run over the flat this season. She has decided to stretch | :56:02. | :56:05.
things out and stretch things that she has because the field now is | :56:06. | :56:08.
sprinkled down the track and Lennie Waite again just a four, five-metre | :56:09. | :56:14.
gap opens, she is keeping her honest. The trigger for that was | :56:15. | :56:20.
going through the first 1000 metres in 3.18, the pace has definitely | :56:21. | :56:23.
picked up now, the pace they would need to run the qualifying standard | :56:24. | :56:30.
is 3.14 per kilometre. We will get an idea how much it has picked up | :56:31. | :56:36.
through the two kilometre mark. Iona Lake is pushing on. This is the | :56:37. | :56:40.
first steeplechase, as you say, and she is taking it to Lennie Waite | :56:41. | :56:44.
think it's allowing her to open up the little gaps and closing it up | :56:45. | :56:48.
again. Charlotte Taylor-Green and Katie Ingle behind, working hard to | :56:49. | :56:52.
try to get back in, but at the moment, they are strung out, single | :56:53. | :56:57.
file. Iona Lake looks pretty good at the moment but Lennie Waite | :56:58. | :56:59.
beginning to close a little bit behind her again. A couple of laps | :57:00. | :57:06.
to go in the qualifying -- and the qualifying time will be beyond them | :57:07. | :57:12.
today. Lennie Waite... Anyone who finishes in the top two yew... Two | :57:13. | :57:17.
laps to go, Charlotte Taylor-Green comes through, Lennie Waite | :57:18. | :57:23.
struggling, perhaps it will not go to form. 700 metres to go, this is | :57:24. | :57:37.
now her race. It looks like she is struggling, Lennie Waite, not | :57:38. | :57:40.
clearing the barriers as well as she usually does. Iona Lake is gaining | :57:41. | :57:44.
in confidence, she can feel the presence behind her. Much of the | :57:45. | :57:48.
race is no longer there. She will not be able to see it is Charlotte | :57:49. | :57:52.
Taylor-Green who is now in second place. She is closing the gap a | :57:53. | :57:59.
little bit onto Iona Lake. Dreams of a World Championship for Lennie | :58:00. | :58:03.
Waite in Rio de Janeiro last year are disappearing, she slips away, | :58:04. | :58:07.
distant fourth place. Iona Lake looks strong. Through the water | :58:08. | :58:13.
again, not too jarring a landing which can really knock you back if | :58:14. | :58:17.
you get the water long. Distant possibility now for Lennie Waite. It | :58:18. | :58:21.
is between Iona Lake and perhaps Charlotte Taylor-Green. Katie Ingle | :58:22. | :58:28.
is there as well. The pain is kicking in. 3000 metres | :58:29. | :58:32.
steeplechase, you can see it written on her face. The gap continues to | :58:33. | :58:36.
grow. You can see the pain written on her face. She went to the front | :58:37. | :58:42.
and she worked hard and she pushed the pace along, maybe she did not | :58:43. | :58:45.
really believe she could win. Now she knows she can win this race and | :58:46. | :58:50.
she has just got to keep everything working strongly and in control over | :58:51. | :58:53.
the barriers over the final 300 metres. Charlotte Taylor-Green, she | :58:54. | :58:58.
is looking strong. So too Katie Ingle behind. Iona Lake beginning to | :58:59. | :59:04.
toil at bit, the gap is closing slightly. Katie Ingle just in touch. | :59:05. | :59:11.
It will not be Lennie Waite's race. She slipped away, fourth place | :59:12. | :59:16.
behind Iona Lake and Charlotte Taylor-Green and Katie Ingle. The | :59:17. | :59:20.
she believes she can have the title, Iona Lake? The gap remains eight, | :59:21. | :59:25.
ten metres. I think she might have it. Still barriers to negotiate, a | :59:26. | :59:30.
water jump to negotiate, and Iona Lake, for the final time, through | :59:31. | :59:34.
the water, and cries of the top bend. Iona Lake digs into. She has | :59:35. | :59:42.
the lead and it is a lead she can afford to have a little look around. | :59:43. | :59:49.
The barrier for the last time. Over it safely. Charlotte Taylor-Green | :59:50. | :59:53.
will not get there, she will get second. What a win this is for Iona | :59:54. | :59:58.
Lake. She has not run a steeplechase this season. She has the British | :59:59. | :00:03.
title. Inside ten minutes. Qualified for the World Championships, that | :00:04. | :00:08.
will be beyond her, that standard, 9.42, but she's the UK champion and | :00:09. | :00:12.
Lennie Waite did not have it today. Very disappointing run from Lennie | :00:13. | :00:18.
Waite who ran 9.43 in the European team Championships, but nothing like | :00:19. | :00:22.
that form today. Looking at the way Lennie Waite has run, she has to be | :00:23. | :00:26.
carrying an injury or something is going. Completely different athlete | :00:27. | :00:31.
to the one we saw run so strongly in second place last week. Iona Lake | :00:32. | :00:36.
went out and worked really hard for that victory. She pushed on the pace | :00:37. | :00:41.
when no one was really willing to take it on and she dug deeper and | :00:42. | :00:47.
deeper and she is British champion but also not too far off a personal | :00:48. | :00:48.
best. For some it about qualifying for the | :00:49. | :00:55.
World Championships here, for others this is the big deal here, winning | :00:56. | :00:59.
the UK Championships. For Iona Lake, this is the moment it becomes the | :01:00. | :01:05.
women's 3000 metres steeplechase champion. By the distance as well, | :01:06. | :01:09.
just outside her personal best. Well done to Iona Lake. T was surely | :01:10. | :01:19.
going to let her class tell. She was struggling. Iona Lake crossed the | :01:20. | :01:26.
line to become UK champion. And the UK champion is now talking to fill. | :01:27. | :01:32.
Tremendous rate. You weren't going to relinquish the lead once you took | :01:33. | :01:38.
old. No, I didn't know what to expect coming into the race, I | :01:39. | :01:41.
hadn't raised that much, coming back from injury. I felt really good. If | :01:42. | :01:46.
they come with me, they do, I'll try to deal with that when it gets to | :01:47. | :01:50.
it. Luckily I managed to keep the lead. When we see somebody of the | :01:51. | :01:55.
calibre of Lennie Waite, trying to spare to her achievement, making | :01:56. | :01:58.
global championship, this will give you the belief I suppose. I do lack | :01:59. | :02:04.
belief sometimes so winning here today was huge. Almost PB. Coming | :02:05. | :02:08.
back from injury I wasn't expecting that. Really happy. Well done, | :02:09. | :02:09.
congratulations. We've got a nice little period here | :02:10. | :02:22.
of middle distance. We've just seen the steeplechase final, 800 and 1500 | :02:23. | :02:29.
to come. We start with the men's 800, which is going to be a cracker. | :02:30. | :02:34.
Really looking forward to that. In a couple of minutes time. | :02:35. | :02:41.
Far into the stadium, as we looked down from that previous camera | :02:42. | :02:47.
angle. The men's high jump around one of the main contenders, this | :02:48. | :02:51.
man, Chris Baker, European bronze-medallist last year. Opened | :02:52. | :03:01.
up with 2.12. The bar is now at 2.16. Solid. As we would have | :03:02. | :03:09.
expected. Chris Baker, 2.36 indoors early last year. 2.27 is his best | :03:10. | :03:20.
this year. Robbie grab ours is yet to come in. | :03:21. | :03:23.
A good start for Chris Baker. Fully loaded field, this. David Smith. | :03:24. | :03:34.
The reigning Scottish indoor champion also goes clear. Smith is | :03:35. | :03:41.
involved, Chris Baker. Looking forward to this, James | :03:42. | :03:52.
Bowness, Jamie Webb. Only one who didn't make it true you | :03:53. | :04:08.
might have expected was Michael Rimmer. He said overnight he hasn't | :04:09. | :04:13.
been too well. Really thought he might have at least given the guys | :04:14. | :04:18.
something to think about still. John Bird is coached by Rob Denmark. | :04:19. | :04:26.
It's going to be about the three big names here. How great it is to see | :04:27. | :04:36.
Andrew Osagie back. We're going to London to the World Championships. | :04:37. | :04:39.
It was there in 2012 he made the Olympic final and acquitted himself | :04:40. | :04:44.
brilliantly. He had so many injury problems over the last four or five | :04:45. | :04:48.
years. He has the qualifying time. Guy Learmonth knows what it's like | :04:49. | :04:52.
to run in front of a home crowd. Did well at the Commonwealth Games in | :04:53. | :04:57.
Glasgow 2014. This young man, Daniel Rowden, having a great season. Won | :04:58. | :04:59.
the under 23 championships. Not too far of the qualifying time. | :05:00. | :05:09.
Still eluding Kyle Langford. He already seems to have so much | :05:10. | :05:13.
experience for one so young, he's still 21. He's missed the qualifying | :05:14. | :05:18.
time by 100th of a second. Elliott Giles, same story. Reigning | :05:19. | :05:27.
champion. Massive, massive talent. He looks so good in the heats. You | :05:28. | :05:34.
have to say, he made Osagie pedestrian in the home straight in | :05:35. | :05:38.
the heats last night. Jamie Webb has done well to get through here. One | :05:39. | :05:42.
of our top 800 metres runners. On the inside is Bowness. Last week | :05:43. | :05:51.
when Williams had to fall out of the four by four they want to James | :05:52. | :05:54.
Bowness to step in and do it, but he wasn't available. Sam Miller got the | :05:55. | :06:03.
task of bringing the bat on home. -- the animal home. | :06:04. | :06:08.
Care the men's 800-metre final. Qualifying time 1:45.9 one. I'm | :06:09. | :06:16.
intrigued to know what tactics will be deployed, who will take this out. | :06:17. | :06:20.
Giles and Langford will want to sit and kick. Osagie would not want to | :06:21. | :06:25.
lead. They wonder who is going to take this on. There isn't a natural | :06:26. | :06:30.
frontrunner in there. Jamie Webb moves to the front but he's not | :06:31. | :06:34.
really looking to be there or to do anything with it at this point. You | :06:35. | :06:39.
can see Elliott Giles raises his arm to make sure he's got enough space | :06:40. | :06:43.
to be able to keep himself out of trouble. They are just queueing up | :06:44. | :06:48.
behind, waiting to see whose nerve breaks first, who is going to make | :06:49. | :06:53.
the move first. The experience has to be with Andrew Osagie. It's great | :06:54. | :06:57.
to see him back racing and racing so well after the long struggles he's | :06:58. | :07:01.
had. Took a little elbow from Kyle Langford. He wanted to make sure he | :07:02. | :07:07.
didn't get squeezed by Andrew Osagie and Elliott Giles. Langford in the | :07:08. | :07:11.
perfect position. Pretty slow through 400 metres, very slow for | :07:12. | :07:14.
these guys. Langford has a great kick. Osagie at his best used to | :07:15. | :07:21.
have a great kick. Would he be better at harder pace? Giles is | :07:22. | :07:24.
anxious, wants out and he knows he's in a bad place. Webb holding onto | :07:25. | :07:30.
the inside. Osagie lacking pace to go with the guys. Lee a month | :07:31. | :07:36.
pushing through. Kyle Langford in the lead, Elliott Giles on his | :07:37. | :07:40.
shoulder, Guy Learmonth in third place. Osagie with a lot of work to | :07:41. | :07:46.
do. London has struck early. -- Langdon. Elliott Giles is going to | :07:47. | :07:55.
win this. It's going to be Guy Learmonth takes second place. Well, | :07:56. | :08:01.
well, well, Daniel Rowden almost a third. I think Kyle Langford might | :08:02. | :08:07.
have held on for it. Elliott Giles, playing right into his hands, this | :08:08. | :08:11.
lad has pace to burn. Wasn't in a good position, he didn't panic, | :08:12. | :08:17.
though. He was in bad position down the back straight. He didn't panic. | :08:18. | :08:22.
He waited for the gaps to come. Then was strong. He let Langford take out | :08:23. | :08:27.
the first run, then he had the ability to change up after that. | :08:28. | :08:32.
Langford couldn't last it out. What a run from Lear month, gives himself | :08:33. | :08:36.
an opportunity of finishing top two. Guy Learmonth gives himself time to | :08:37. | :08:42.
get the qualifying time. Elliott Giles didn't panic. He also let Kyle | :08:43. | :08:46.
Langford do a lot of the leading into the winds down the back | :08:47. | :08:52.
straight. It took a little bit too much out of him. You can see the | :08:53. | :08:57.
anxious look on Kyle Langford. He's trained with Elliott Giles he knows | :08:58. | :09:01.
the shape easing, he will have watched him race yesterday so well | :09:02. | :09:04.
in the heats. That pace once he turned it on, he was the only one | :09:05. | :09:09.
moving away down the home straight. Guy Learmonth wasn't closing on | :09:10. | :09:13.
Elliott Giles in any way. He was reeling in Kyle Langford and | :09:14. | :09:16.
battling hard to get the second place and buy some time to run the | :09:17. | :09:21.
qualifying time. Andrew Osagie didn't look as good as he's looked | :09:22. | :09:24.
so far this year. Hopefully he knows what he's got to do now to get back | :09:25. | :09:29.
into the shape he was earlier this year. Good performance from Elliott | :09:30. | :09:35.
Giles comedies put a lot of hard work in. He was out of step with the | :09:36. | :09:41.
group. Had a fume problems a month or two back. He's got it all | :09:42. | :09:44.
together, I'm sure he's going to be delighted. | :09:45. | :09:47.
Steve Cram just saying a couple of months back, a couple of problems. | :09:48. | :09:52.
They are in the past, look at the form you are in now. We turned up on | :09:53. | :10:03.
the day we needed to, so all good. It's quite surreal, but incredible | :10:04. | :10:08.
to sort of get the win again. Last year was such like a big sort of | :10:09. | :10:12.
emotional roller-coaster. This year is hard work. I don't think this | :10:13. | :10:18.
year is based on luck, it's based on pure hard work. It's incredible. | :10:19. | :10:21.
Last year was a big breakthrough, now it expected of you. I don't know | :10:22. | :10:26.
if it is expected in a field like that, Osagie, Kyle, these are | :10:27. | :10:32.
guys... It's all about the chance, that's where it counts. Well done. | :10:33. | :10:41.
Elliott winning, a very good performance from him. It's a bit | :10:42. | :10:47.
interesting. Osagie has the qualifying time. Elliott Giles | :10:48. | :10:52.
doesn't. Kyle Langford not coming in the top two. The only man I can can | :10:53. | :10:58.
come away with that... The top two will come away really happy with | :10:59. | :11:04.
that, I think. It's the women's 1500 metres next up on the track. Laura | :11:05. | :11:08.
Weightman will be the woman the rest of the field will be looking to | :11:09. | :11:17.
beat. No Laura Muir here today. Bastia she won the Diamond League. | :11:18. | :11:21.
Paula Radcliffe over there in the commentary box. Your thoughts on | :11:22. | :11:27.
Laurette missing a couple of weeks of training. She is feeling much | :11:28. | :11:31.
better. Still talk coming out of her camp she is intent on doubling up in | :11:32. | :11:36.
London, which seems like a brave, bold, but quite a good decision when | :11:37. | :11:40.
she was at the peak fitness. If you miss that much training, is it a | :11:41. | :11:44.
decision you think might come under scrutiny? The best people to make | :11:45. | :11:48.
that decision are Laura and Andy, the only ones who really know how | :11:49. | :11:52.
much training she is missed, how significant the injury has been, and | :11:53. | :11:56.
the shape she is in, now she's back in training. We'll get an indication | :11:57. | :12:00.
when she races over 800 metres in the week. And a little bit more at | :12:01. | :12:08.
the anniversary games. They are the ones making that decision based on | :12:09. | :12:12.
the shape she's in. The London schedule would lend itself to do the | :12:13. | :12:18.
15 and five. It is a huge ask to go through those heats and perform. It | :12:19. | :12:21.
can catch an athlete out having to go through the heats, navigate them | :12:22. | :12:26.
without losing any of your stamina, your speed, going through those | :12:27. | :12:29.
rounds to get into good shape into the finals. Just the mental effect | :12:30. | :12:33.
of having to work hard and keep working hard to those heats, then | :12:34. | :12:38.
get ready for the next one. She showed she was well capable of doing | :12:39. | :12:42.
that indoors. It is a different story at the World Championships, | :12:43. | :12:45.
but she does have the main event first. Let's get back down on the | :12:46. | :12:51.
track. Laura Muir is qualified as she is the Diamond League winner in | :12:52. | :12:55.
the 1500 metres. On the track, many women who would like to be up there | :12:56. | :12:59.
with her. In London. On the start line. | :13:00. | :13:02.
Andrew Cotter can talk you through the field. | :13:03. | :13:05.
Five women in the line-up of the qualifying time for the worlds. | :13:06. | :13:12.
McDonald, Jessica Judd, Melissa Courtney. The first two here will | :13:13. | :13:20.
qualify for the championships. Sarah McDonald is one of those who could | :13:21. | :13:24.
qualify. The selectors might pick another to make it four in this | :13:25. | :13:28.
event in London. It's a strong field, one of the strongest events | :13:29. | :13:35.
of this championship, Sarah McDonald... Varies Hannah England. | :13:36. | :13:40.
She has achieved great things in her career, silver-medallist in 2011. | :13:41. | :13:45.
She might struggle to keep pace with others in better form here. | :13:46. | :13:49.
Rhianwedd Price. Laura Weightman has the red name, she is the favourite | :13:50. | :13:56.
here. An time she is clear of the rest, she has, in her career, gone | :13:57. | :14:01.
close to four minutes. Jessica Judd is one of those who could certainly | :14:02. | :14:04.
challenge her. There is a whole host of athletes, maybe four or five, who | :14:05. | :14:12.
run 4.06 in this field. Stephie Pennycook. Amelia Quirk. Katie | :14:13. | :14:21.
Snowden is running well. Jemma Reekie represent Kilmartin. | :14:22. | :14:30.
Jessica Judd, you can see the tall figure... She says she prefers the | :14:31. | :14:40.
1500 metres, as an 800-metre runner she had all that talented running in | :14:41. | :14:45.
2014, she ran great times. She lost love for athletics, felt | :14:46. | :14:49.
disappointed and dejected, came back to it, went to Loughborough, moved | :14:50. | :14:54.
to 1500, says she prefers the variety of it, but she tends to get | :14:55. | :14:58.
to the front, to control the race. Having just watched a race where | :14:59. | :15:01.
there was no natural frontrunner, now there is. That is the way Jess | :15:02. | :15:06.
runs, and the way she likes to run. She has the qualifying time for the | :15:07. | :15:10.
5000 metres as well, so to have that range, having started out her career | :15:11. | :15:14.
so promisingly over 800 metres, then to move up and struggle for a little | :15:15. | :15:17.
bit, as she settled into university as well. Also with the pressure she | :15:18. | :15:22.
was putting on herself. Now she's running freely she's enjoying her | :15:23. | :15:25.
running again and has the qualifying time over 1500 and 5000 metres. She | :15:26. | :15:30.
is technically still entered for the 5000 later, so if she wants to make | :15:31. | :15:35.
the top two here it would be a big ask. Laura Weightman sitting in a | :15:36. | :15:38.
good position. When you know how Jessica Judd is going to run, you | :15:39. | :15:41.
know you've got somebody who sits on the shoulder, and use them as a good | :15:42. | :15:45.
pacemaker. Pretty bunched that at the moment. | :15:46. | :15:50.
They are all bunched up and queueing up behind Jessica Judd, who is not | :15:51. | :15:57.
leading it out at a pace doing any damage to the rest of the field, and | :15:58. | :16:01.
it's a high-calibre field, at the head of which sits Laura Weightman, | :16:02. | :16:05.
who is controlling the race. She is in the perfect position to be able | :16:06. | :16:12.
to react. Sarah Mcdonald has herself in a position to be able to move | :16:13. | :16:17.
around. At the back of the field, young Amelia Quirk ran very well to | :16:18. | :16:22.
qualify for the final, only 17. Sarah Mcdonald is on the outside. | :16:23. | :16:25.
With this case, Melissa Courtney also in a good position. McDonald is | :16:26. | :16:32.
in behind Melissa Courtney, and she does have a good kick. Will be quite | :16:33. | :16:36.
suited to McDonald, because she likes a fast finish. Moving up into | :16:37. | :16:43.
fifth, easing past, avoiding a little clip, but still Jessica Judd, | :16:44. | :16:47.
the long black hair flying, so familiar on the track. Laura | :16:48. | :16:53.
Weightman sitting on her shoulder. Compressing again. Jessica Judd is | :16:54. | :16:56.
out in front, but it's no great pace. Looking at her feet, making | :16:57. | :17:02.
sure that Courtney is checking her feet on the heels of Laura | :17:03. | :17:06.
Weightman. Laura Weightman is poised, ready to make a move. | :17:07. | :17:10.
Jessica Judd is working hard and she is saving enough to be able to react | :17:11. | :17:15.
when the challenges come, and she knows they will. Behind her, Melissa | :17:16. | :17:20.
Courtney, Katie Snowden, Laura MacDonald -- Sarah Mcdonald all with | :17:21. | :17:23.
a qualifying time, but there is danger from Charlene Thomas further | :17:24. | :17:27.
back. This is pretty much the expect we expected to see at this stage. -- | :17:28. | :17:32.
pretty much the order we expected to see. A bit of a gap to Laura | :17:33. | :17:37.
Weightman now. Sarah Mcdonald is there as well. As they hit the bell, | :17:38. | :17:47.
Jessica Judd has the lead. 3.03 at the bell, Laura Weightman, she moves | :17:48. | :17:49.
at a little bit but she hasn't really kicked yet. Jessica Judd has | :17:50. | :17:54.
raised the pace a little bit. A bit of daylight opening up back to | :17:55. | :17:58.
Melissa Courtney, as Sarah Mcdonald moves past her. It's a race for the | :17:59. | :18:03.
top two to make the World Championships. Jessica Judd trying | :18:04. | :18:06.
to hold off Laura Weightman. She is in such good form, and she just | :18:07. | :18:10.
cruises past her in the back straight. Jessica Judd has no | :18:11. | :18:14.
response. There are still some who might challenge Jessica Judd for | :18:15. | :18:18.
second. Sarah Mcdonald has a quick finish and she is closing in, the | :18:19. | :18:22.
smaller finger, -- smaller figure, an Jessica Judd. It is hurting now, | :18:23. | :18:29.
and Jessica Judd is still there. Laura Weightman still with work to | :18:30. | :18:33.
do. Sarah Mcdonald trying to find something. Jessica Judd hasn't gone | :18:34. | :18:37.
away. The gap is not quite closing it up for Jessica Judd. It's going | :18:38. | :18:43.
to be victory for Laura Weightman, UK champion, leading to the | :18:44. | :18:46.
championships, arms aloft. Jessica Judd takes second, also going to | :18:47. | :18:52.
London, and Sarah Mcdonald in third. All of the work was done by Jessica | :18:53. | :18:56.
Judd and she might have fallen out of love with athletics, but she | :18:57. | :18:58.
loves it again now. The relief of fitting in the top two for Jessica | :18:59. | :19:05.
Judd. -- getting in the top two. A great rest, ready much going as we | :19:06. | :19:10.
expected. Jessica Judd is doing all of the work and Laura Weightman had | :19:11. | :19:16.
too much final lap. Laura Weightman had a bit left, but she knew she was | :19:17. | :19:21.
working hard and running up against a rejuvenated Jessica Judd, and | :19:22. | :19:25.
lovely to see. She had a qualifying time of 5000, and that was for the | :19:26. | :19:31.
student games, and she has accepted for the under 23 championships as | :19:32. | :19:36.
well. Now she has decisions to make, Jessica Judd, because I think she's | :19:37. | :19:40.
run above her own expectations to make the World Championships team | :19:41. | :19:43.
for London and put herself back where she was a few years ago. Laura | :19:44. | :19:46.
Weightman taking every box she needed. She had a few little issues | :19:47. | :19:52.
coming into this race that she needed to iron out and make sure | :19:53. | :19:56.
that she was taking all of the boxes and achieving her selection. Laura, | :19:57. | :20:02.
by virtue of diamonds league champion from last year, it means we | :20:03. | :20:08.
can take four runners in the 1500, so Sarah Mcdonald with a qualifying | :20:09. | :20:11.
time. Katie Snowden ran well down the home straight but couldn't get | :20:12. | :20:17.
into the top group. Laura Weightman takes on the victory in the women's | :20:18. | :20:26.
1500 metres. Andrew Cotter talking on commentary | :20:27. | :20:30.
that there could be four representing Great Britain in | :20:31. | :20:33.
London, which is fantastic. You came out on top and got your place. Well | :20:34. | :20:37.
done. The race was really important for me. I had confidence and belief | :20:38. | :20:43.
in myself and I've still got it in the lakes. I'm so happy. Laura did | :20:44. | :20:50.
us a favour in winning the diamonds league, so with that strength and | :20:51. | :20:55.
depth, we can really showcase it. What better place than the World | :20:56. | :20:57.
Championships. I know you admire the way that Jessica won that race. A | :20:58. | :21:03.
bit overcome. You've made the team again. It's been a road back for you | :21:04. | :21:07.
but you've done it. It's been so hard. My dad has been fantastic. | :21:08. | :21:18.
Nick Dakin, everyone has just been so supportive, my family and you | :21:19. | :21:21.
know, they put up with me at my worst. Honestly, I can't believe it. | :21:22. | :21:26.
Having missed out on London 2012, my dad was like, if you can get to the | :21:27. | :21:31.
World Championships, that in name. We never thought we'd do it. -- that | :21:32. | :21:39.
is and aim. I'm so excited. We are both excited. It's amazing. Thanks | :21:40. | :21:44.
to everybody for making sure that I didn't give up and kept going. | :21:45. | :21:49.
That's a great story. You've done so well. We'll see you in London. Thank | :21:50. | :21:54.
you. Laura Weightman with the victory, | :21:55. | :21:58.
and she and Jessica Judd are on that team for London, along with Sarah | :21:59. | :22:09.
Mcdonald. A personal best for Jeremy -- Jemma Reekie and Harriet | :22:10. | :22:10.
Knowles-Jones as well. I'm just going to take a second | :22:11. | :22:26.
while we wait for the men's race. Well done to Jessica Judd. I'm | :22:27. | :22:29.
pleased that Laura got through, but that's a cracking story. When | :22:30. | :22:32.
everybody knows what you are going to do, everybody knew Jessica Judd | :22:33. | :22:39.
was going to the front. To execute that way was superb. It was going do | :22:40. | :22:45.
it here? Charlie Grice, Chris O'Hare, Josh Kerr and the number one | :22:46. | :22:52.
man, Jake Wightman. A great race in prospect. We just saw a | :22:53. | :22:55.
straightforward way of running a 1500 metres, where Jess Judd, the | :22:56. | :23:01.
front runner, a natural front runner, she ran out and was rewarded | :23:02. | :23:03.
with a place. No natural front runners here. Charlie Grice, who has | :23:04. | :23:09.
won this on more than one occasion, will be hoping his kick will bring | :23:10. | :23:16.
him home. The likes of Chris O'Hare, I was watching him in LA in Mayer, | :23:17. | :23:21.
running particularly well, a personal best, 3.30 four. In great | :23:22. | :23:27.
shape. -- LA in Mayer. Jake Wightman, another Scot. Winning in | :23:28. | :23:33.
Oslo in the diamonds league, in the form of his life. The only other man | :23:34. | :23:36.
with an 800 metres, find time as well,. Tom Marshall has been in top | :23:37. | :23:48.
form as well, the best that Wales has got on show here today. It's not | :23:49. | :23:53.
all about the Scots. The men's 1500 metres final. Four main contenders | :23:54. | :24:00.
but, as ever, tactics will be so important. The qualifying time for | :24:01. | :24:04.
those four, Josh Kerr did it in the NCAA championships, scraping inside | :24:05. | :24:11.
by 100th of a second, but will Hughes bring it aside the sacred | :24:12. | :24:15.
spring a surprise? -- will he spring a surprise? What do you think, | :24:16. | :24:31.
Paula? When you said there was no natural front runner, I think Robbie | :24:32. | :24:34.
Fitzgibbon yesterday was very much a natural front runner, and I think he | :24:35. | :24:38.
ran hard in that heat to make sure he got into that final, because that | :24:39. | :24:46.
is where he wanted to be, alongside his training partner, Charlie Grice. | :24:47. | :24:50.
I think it's a waiting game now behind the big two at the front. | :24:51. | :24:53.
Jake Wightman taking a huge step up but he isn't doing much with his | :24:54. | :24:57.
place right now. He knows he has the pace to react to anything around | :24:58. | :25:02.
him. Charlie thinks he does. Josh Kerr waving his arms around, making | :25:03. | :25:07.
sure he doesn't get too boxed in, but he is badly boxed at the moment. | :25:08. | :25:11.
He runs a bit taller and bigger than the other runners, so he is easy to | :25:12. | :25:16.
pick out. Very experienced at tactical races. He is only young but | :25:17. | :25:21.
he has raced a lot in the state and finished well. Josh on the inside, | :25:22. | :25:26.
Chris O'Hare just tucked in, where he likes to be, in his Edinburgh | :25:27. | :25:32.
vest. Charlie Grice knows the danger and doesn't want to get himself | :25:33. | :25:40.
boxed in. Jake is decided, a 65, 66 first lap, happily running at the | :25:41. | :25:43.
front but not going to lead it. Robbie Fitzgibbon, coming to the | :25:44. | :25:50.
front, pushes everybody up. Look at these reluctant leaders, four | :25:51. | :25:53.
abreast. Tom Marshall looking across at everybody. Josh Kerr in a bad | :25:54. | :25:58.
place. The third lap, where the nerves start to jangle, where you | :25:59. | :26:01.
don't want to be in a bad position coming round the belt. Now that | :26:02. | :26:06.
Charlie Wightman -- Jake Wightman is there, you can't give it up. As they | :26:07. | :26:11.
attack round the outside, he has to stay there, and he can't give it up. | :26:12. | :26:15.
Otherwise he would be in a possible position to come background. Robbie | :26:16. | :26:20.
Fitzgibbon is doing Jake Wightman and Charlie Grice a favour. By | :26:21. | :26:26.
running so wide, he's making Chris O'Hare and James West have two | :26:27. | :26:29.
though really white. Not every one of these guys think they can beat | :26:30. | :26:39.
everybody in a 400 race. Jake Wightman has to be careful. If | :26:40. | :26:43.
somebody really goes hard, now that Chris O'Hare has got himself out, | :26:44. | :26:47.
Josh Kerr in a bad position. They are five abreast down the home | :26:48. | :26:50.
straight. Tom Marshall down the outside. Jake will want to hold off | :26:51. | :27:00.
Charlie Grice. Josh Kerr... What Jake Wightman did last week, | :27:01. | :27:02.
allowing Charlie Grice to take the lead, but quickly on his shoulder, | :27:03. | :27:09.
then Chris O'Hare and Josh Kerr. Charlie was very quick, how he cut | :27:10. | :27:12.
in front, and I don't think Jake was happy. The three of them, with Josh | :27:13. | :27:18.
Kerr, Charlie Grice losing ground. Josh Kerr looking forward, but Jake | :27:19. | :27:25.
Wightman fighting him. All of a sudden the race is on at the front. | :27:26. | :27:27.
Charlie Grice overstepping on the curb. Look at Chris O'Hare! Away in | :27:28. | :27:36.
front. It's a Scottish one, two, three at the British championships. | :27:37. | :27:42.
Chris O'Hare will be the champion. Who will be second? It's going to be | :27:43. | :27:49.
Josh Kerr. Chris O'Hare wins the title, goes to the World | :27:50. | :27:51.
Championships for the ill be joined by the Scottish challenger, Josh | :27:52. | :27:59.
Kerr. -- he goes to the World Championships and he'll be joined. | :28:00. | :28:03.
It was a typical 1500 metres tactical race. I think that Jake | :28:04. | :28:07.
will want to go away and look at where he lost ground to Chris | :28:08. | :28:10.
O'Hare, but well done, Chris. Tommy, Chris does this a lot. He knows how | :28:11. | :28:16.
to sit away and be patient and when to kick. Charlie perhaps will feel | :28:17. | :28:25.
the most disappointed. Start with Josh Kerr. Two people will walk away | :28:26. | :28:30.
happy with how they ran, and it will be Josh Kerr and Chris O'Hare. | :28:31. | :28:36.
Looking at Josh, he is still so young, but he didn't panic. He was | :28:37. | :28:40.
in a bad position for a lot of the race, boxed in, and he had to get | :28:41. | :28:45.
himself out of trouble. Jake Wightman gave him a good shove back, | :28:46. | :28:50.
losing him momentum with 120 metres to go, but he was fighting hard and | :28:51. | :28:54.
he wasn't giving up on second. You can see Jake Wightman a bit | :28:55. | :28:56.
frustrated. Chris O'Hare moving away. Josh Kerr is fighting hard. He | :28:57. | :29:04.
knows it Charlie Grice is behind him and maybe doesn't know at this point | :29:05. | :29:07.
he is going backwards behind and he was fighting for second. At the | :29:08. | :29:13.
line, he just wanted it a bit more and Jake Wightman. At 26, can you | :29:14. | :29:18.
call Chris O'Hare the old man of the field? Is the wise man. He has | :29:19. | :29:23.
raised so many times in championships, but a lot of times | :29:24. | :29:28.
he's got it right. Today, he launched his attack at the right | :29:29. | :29:32.
time and he is a deserving champion. I was on about the race when he | :29:33. | :29:37.
raced Mo Farah, and he kicked too early that night and he got a PB and | :29:38. | :29:42.
he was rewarded with that, but that was perfectly timed, 38.6, the last | :29:43. | :29:47.
300. He had legs and others didn't. A Scottish one, two, three to | :29:48. | :29:51.
celebrate and I'm sure that Chris will be delighted. Chris, talking | :29:52. | :29:58.
about a one, two, three for Scotland, and you say for Edinburgh. | :29:59. | :30:05.
Yes. It's amazing. We have all had a time this year, and it's one thing | :30:06. | :30:10.
hitting the time in fast races, but come here and perform, it's tough. I | :30:11. | :30:18.
spent most of my warm up on the therapy bed. My hamstring was | :30:19. | :30:23.
playing up. I had to make sure I came out and forgot about it and got | :30:24. | :30:29.
to the line first. A tremendous performance, and this guy came | :30:30. | :30:30.
charging home-buying. This is all new volume. -- charging home behind. | :30:31. | :30:41.
This is all new for you. I have had some hard races in America and I had | :30:42. | :30:45.
to take some days off to be ready for this. It's a great feeling to | :30:46. | :30:50.
continually be in the top places. Doing it with three Edinburgh guys | :30:51. | :30:53.
sandwiching me is making it all the better. You are the pride of | :30:54. | :30:58.
Scotland today. And let's not forget Jake. Absolutely, brilliant. catch | :30:59. | :31:04.
up with some more field events from yesterday. Epstein zapped with Phil | :31:05. | :31:11.
-- let's do that with Phil. Williams was just short of the | :31:12. | :31:23.
qualifying distance the next month's World Championships. Nathan Fox who | :31:24. | :31:26.
jumped the qualifying mark earlier in the season booked his spot thanks | :31:27. | :31:33.
to his second-place finish. In the women's event no one could better | :31:34. | :31:39.
the first jump from this teenager. The Manchester University student | :31:40. | :31:43.
took home a personal best of 16 metres 34 and the British title. Job | :31:44. | :31:49.
done to Dale won the men's javelin with a season best throw of 70 | :31:50. | :31:57.
metres 58. He'll be delighted with his first domestic crown. Scott | :31:58. | :32:06.
Lincoln, a builder by trade, became British champion for the third time | :32:07. | :32:10.
in shock but with a throw of 70 metres 82. -- 17. It was tight at | :32:11. | :32:17.
the top of the men's discus. Nick Percy managed to defend his British | :32:18. | :32:24.
title with a throw of 60 metres 78. Women's hammer wasn't so closely | :32:25. | :32:30.
contested, then Sophie Hitchen is an Olympic bronze-medallist. In a class | :32:31. | :32:34.
all of her own. Her domestic dominance continued with a modest | :32:35. | :32:35.
winning throw of 67 metres 58. Great field events action yesterday. | :32:36. | :32:52.
Robbie Grabarz, one of the most decorated British athletes come | :32:53. | :32:58.
under pressure. 2.20. He goes clear. Put himself in an awkward situation | :32:59. | :33:03.
there. He did compete in Paris last night, he travelled the short flight | :33:04. | :33:09.
back from Paris this morning. 2.24 he jumped last night. It was all at | :33:10. | :33:16.
his opening height of 2.20. He's in fourth place at the moment. His days | :33:17. | :33:28.
involved. To the final of the women's 400 metres, this is how they | :33:29. | :33:31.
line up. Perri The youngest in the final, Cheriece | :33:32. | :33:50.
Hylton. Shannon Hylton her sister ran very well in the 200. Cheriece | :33:51. | :33:56.
Hylton has a new personal best this season. Amy Allcock from Aldershot, | :33:57. | :34:07.
Farnham district. She goes in lane seven. There will be a big role for | :34:08. | :34:12.
Perri Shakes-Drayton. Wasn't quite expecting what she did yesterday in | :34:13. | :34:21.
the heats. . She's had hard times since her injury in the final of the | :34:22. | :34:26.
400 hurdles in Beijing, but looked good in the heats. Zoey Clark, the | :34:27. | :34:33.
quickest in the UK this year over 400. Just a fraction ahead of the | :34:34. | :34:39.
woman inside her in lane four, Emily Diamond. This might be a very | :34:40. | :34:43.
competitive, close race. We seen a few who have been easy to pick out | :34:44. | :34:54.
the winner. This one, not so. Kersten now injury free and running | :34:55. | :35:02.
well. The most experienced in the inner two lanes. Margaret Adeoye is | :35:03. | :35:10.
a little bit of 52 seconds this season. That is a theme for Anyika | :35:11. | :35:16.
Onuora as well. One of the very few to go below 51 seconds. She's been | :35:17. | :35:22.
struggling of late. She didn't look too good at the European team | :35:23. | :35:25.
Championships. What can she do from lane one? | :35:26. | :35:32.
Perri Shakes-Drayton went out so fast over the first 200 metres | :35:33. | :35:37.
yesterday and was hanging on. She goes in six. Diamond and Clark and | :35:38. | :35:50.
Anyika Onuora have the qualifying standard. The final of the women's | :35:51. | :35:55.
400 metres. It's fairly even at the moment, | :35:56. | :36:10.
though Adeoye making ground on the inside. Strong around the outside | :36:11. | :36:18.
from Cheriece Hylton. Anyika Onuora starting strongly in lane one. A | :36:19. | :36:23.
long way to make up. She's running well. She hasn't run too well of | :36:24. | :36:29.
late. She put herself in a good position here. Perri Shakes-Drayton | :36:30. | :36:32.
as well, lack of training, lack of racing perhaps. She is in a good | :36:33. | :36:37.
position. It's Cheriece Hylton leading them into the home straight. | :36:38. | :36:42.
Anyika Onuora... Through the middle. Zoey Clark with that strength, Emily | :36:43. | :36:47.
Diamond, the faster finishes. It's between these two, Zoey Clark | :36:48. | :36:50.
looking to take it. Right on the line, she gets it, just, from Emily | :36:51. | :36:55.
Diamond. Those to take the treasured spot in the World Championships. The | :36:56. | :37:00.
champion herself here is Zoey Clark. Classic example of how to run 400 | :37:01. | :37:04.
metres, just measuring it, judging it, having the fastest finished. | :37:05. | :37:16.
They didn't panic when they saw Anyika Onuora and Hylton starting | :37:17. | :37:23.
off so strongly. We can be pleased nobody took themselves out, really | :37:24. | :37:29.
too fast. All of them ran a very balanced race up to their potential. | :37:30. | :37:38.
I just think the inside, as you said, Anyika is probably got the | :37:39. | :37:44.
most basic natural speed of all the runners. She used it very well at | :37:45. | :37:49.
the beginning. She's still kind of measured. Not way up. She's really | :37:50. | :37:55.
judge the race. It's her fitness she is lacking. Two centre named as we | :37:56. | :37:59.
expected. We knew it was going to be tight. They accelerated so well, so | :38:00. | :38:04.
smoothly you didn't even notice. Perri Shakes-Drayton is struggling | :38:05. | :38:09.
for four. Don't worry, she's going to be healthy again, she'll be back. | :38:10. | :38:14.
One more win to behind her and I think we'll see a very different | :38:15. | :38:18.
Perri Shakes-Drayton come next season. Great race between those two | :38:19. | :38:25.
winning in lane five and four. An all Scottish victory, I'm getting | :38:26. | :38:28.
jingoistic about it. That power on the stretch, just taking it ahead of | :38:29. | :38:33.
Emily Diamond and Zoe Clark. The new 400 metres champion is talking to | :38:34. | :38:37.
Phil. The Scottish athletes are certainly shining today. He burst | :38:38. | :38:43.
onto the scene recently, people at home will be getting used your name, | :38:44. | :38:47.
we'll see you a lot more now, at London at the World Championships, | :38:48. | :38:51.
what does it mean to you? It's such an important competition for me. It | :38:52. | :38:56.
was potentially the most important competition, I've secured by space | :38:57. | :39:01.
for the World Championships. This is really important, the competition, | :39:02. | :39:05.
glad to get the win. You are in the box and know the quality of the | :39:06. | :39:11.
field, where does that come from to deliver that performance? It's quite | :39:12. | :39:14.
good to have such a good level of competition because it was a really | :39:15. | :39:18.
close final. You know you will have someone there in the home straight | :39:19. | :39:22.
pushing, so you'll have to push at the end. It's good to have that. | :39:23. | :39:26.
Well done today, see you London, congratulations. Thanks so much, | :39:27. | :39:28.
goodbye. Zoey Clark winning the women's 400 | :39:29. | :39:39.
and judging it so well. Scottish athletics is on the rise at the | :39:40. | :39:45.
moment. Emily Diamond just pipped on the line. Widnes just fading towards | :39:46. | :39:50.
the end. Perri Shakes-Drayton down in sixth place. -- Anyika Onuora | :39:51. | :39:55.
just fading towards the end. Robbie Grabarz's last attempt, 2.20 | :39:56. | :40:05.
six. He gets it. That's more like it. Look fairly lacklustre in his | :40:06. | :40:10.
first two attempts. He shakes his head. He knows he's capable of more. | :40:11. | :40:17.
Fourth in the Olympics last year. He jumped the same height as the | :40:18. | :40:21.
bronze-medallist. The only medal not in his collection is a World | :40:22. | :40:26.
Championship medal. He's a month away from challenging for that. | :40:27. | :40:30.
You'll need more than this, though. Third time clearance of 2.20 six. | :40:31. | :40:35.
The next height... 2.33 on the board. He goes into first place. | :40:36. | :40:44.
Coming up shortly is the women's long jump competition. An area that | :40:45. | :40:52.
has real strength and depth in the last seasonal two. The heptathlete | :40:53. | :40:57.
have always been quite competitive. Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Jessica | :40:58. | :41:02.
Ennis-Hill. Her next to me. Longer competing. Now we have these three | :41:03. | :41:07.
have been competing on the world stage. Jazmin Sawyers, who's been | :41:08. | :41:22.
doing well. One of the athlete had a minor traffic accident yesterday, we | :41:23. | :41:28.
wish her a speedy recovery. Is it one of those things, you get those | :41:29. | :41:32.
periods where there is a rich depth of talent in a certain event? We | :41:33. | :41:41.
perceive it as a rich depth of talent, but Dubai has a tough | :41:42. | :41:45.
qualifier. Proctor has it, but from last year. The same with Jazmin | :41:46. | :41:50.
Sawyers. They still need to find the qualifying distance. It's nice it is | :41:51. | :41:55.
tight and competitive, nice that the girls are making that representation | :41:56. | :41:58.
and making it through to Championships. They still have | :41:59. | :42:02.
dropped their game. Same in the men's sprint, you have depth of | :42:03. | :42:05.
talent, have we got somebody who can break through and make finals and | :42:06. | :42:08.
win medals? We are close but not quite there. We saw Ugen do well in | :42:09. | :42:17.
the European indoors. The girls know how to raise their game. They tend | :42:18. | :42:22.
to do it at Championships. It's a formality but it's tough, | :42:23. | :42:27.
competitive. Jazmin is the one looking to find form this season. | :42:28. | :42:31.
Back out on the track. It's the men's 400-metre final. The local | :42:32. | :42:38.
man, Hudson Smith, a real crowd pleaser. Steve Cram will take you | :42:39. | :42:39.
through this final. It would be a popular victory were | :42:40. | :42:47.
he to win. He is the favourite. He's got some interesting new 400-metre | :42:48. | :42:52.
talent. I didn't use the word young because Dwayne Callan has thrown | :42:53. | :42:56.
himself into the mix. 32 years old running brilliantly. Getting to | :42:57. | :43:03.
grips with this event. Matthew Hudson Smith. With George Caddick, | :43:04. | :43:15.
American -based. Mark picked up an injury. He was ready to race. He's | :43:16. | :43:23.
been doing some box work. Still really trying to get into the sort | :43:24. | :43:30.
of form that will at least put him in the relay squad. This man is | :43:31. | :43:39.
coached by James Hillier, his brother is a 400-metre hurdling | :43:40. | :43:45.
talent. From Guernsey. A lot of experience, you expect him to | :43:46. | :43:51.
perform well on days like today. Then Dwayne Callan. What a | :43:52. | :43:56.
performance from him at the European team Championships last week. It | :43:57. | :44:02.
means he has now got the qualifying time, as has Matthew Hatton Smith. | :44:03. | :44:08.
Totti finish for those men will put them in the team. Kalann is 32 years | :44:09. | :44:17.
of age, -- Clyde Hart is looking after that six | :44:18. | :44:31.
foot four talent. Theo Campbell is one of our good youngsters, went to | :44:32. | :44:35.
the world relay earlier in the year as part of that relay team. On the | :44:36. | :44:43.
inside, Jamal Rowden Stevens from the Shaftesbury club, under 47 | :44:44. | :44:52.
seconds. -- Rhoden-Stevens. The qualifying time is 45.5 zero. You | :44:53. | :44:56.
have to also adding that although three men, Caddick, Hudson-Smith and | :44:57. | :45:04.
Cowan have that time, Martin Rooney as European champion is considered | :45:05. | :45:08.
also to be eligible, were he to finish in the top two. There are | :45:09. | :45:13.
four men, if they finish in the top two, will get automatic selection. | :45:14. | :45:14.
The men's 400 metres... That went off before the gun. So it | :45:15. | :45:30.
was a false start from the start. Yeah, we've had a bit of a problem | :45:31. | :45:35.
with that. They are all gathering round now. How many does it take to | :45:36. | :45:40.
sort this out? I have a feeling this might be a little while to stop I | :45:41. | :45:45.
don't think we going to see a receipt this time. He is waiting | :45:46. | :45:55.
patiently. What that little bit of paper says, technical fault, | :45:56. | :46:01.
something like that. Bail or having a look at it. How much can a piece | :46:02. | :46:08.
of paper tell you? -- they are all having a look at it. It's only | :46:09. | :46:13.
small. You'll never get that through the boss, no. Too much. Did you hear | :46:14. | :46:30.
that? I didn't quite hear that. The Beeb went off before the gun, so | :46:31. | :46:37.
either he was leaving his blocks, it didn't look like that, but it seemed | :46:38. | :46:40.
that way to the naked eye. To green card. But it was only shown to | :46:41. | :46:47.
Matthew Hudson-Smith you only have to show green card to the home | :46:48. | :46:52.
field. There are degrees in this now. The men's 400 metres final, and | :46:53. | :47:02.
Matthew Hudson-Smith settling down. George Caddick inside him, and then | :47:03. | :47:05.
Dwayne Cowan, and Martyn Rooney in lane eight. This time, away safely. | :47:06. | :47:11.
Rabah Yousif Bkheit nicely smartly out of the blocks, and five men on | :47:12. | :47:18.
the outside moving away from George Caddick in lane three, Larsson | :47:19. | :47:20.
started as quickly. Dwayne Cowan going well and Cameron Chalmers has | :47:21. | :47:27.
already gone past Martyn Rooney. He hasn't got speed through the first | :47:28. | :47:32.
200. Matthew Hudson-Smith in a good position. Cameron Chalmers is | :47:33. | :47:36.
leading. As this bend unfurls, Matthew Hudson-Smith will be right | :47:37. | :47:40.
there. George Caddick is miles behind. Rooney is coming back. Look | :47:41. | :47:45.
at Matthew Hudson-Smith, a really dominant performance from the local | :47:46. | :47:50.
man. Rabah Yousif Bkheit coming in in second, and Martyn Rooney | :47:51. | :47:54.
finishing quickly. Matthew Hudson-Smith, with Rabah Yousif | :47:55. | :47:58.
Bkheit in second. 45.02, that's more like it. He has been coming into | :47:59. | :48:03.
some good form. He had to pull out of the Scott -- of the stock: | :48:04. | :48:07.
Diamond League with a back problem, but a solid heat yesterday, and a | :48:08. | :48:12.
dominant run yesterday. -- the stock: Diamond League. The time for | :48:13. | :48:18.
Rabah Yousif Bkheit, for me, will be outside the qualifying time. The | :48:19. | :48:23.
three who had a chance, have they got in the top two? That slipped by. | :48:24. | :48:29.
No doubt about the winner. He is the only one guaranteed his place. That | :48:30. | :48:32.
was a right royal battle behind Matthew Hudson-Smith. Once he had | :48:33. | :48:39.
hit at 300 metres mark, he looked so majestic. I took my eye off him, | :48:40. | :48:45.
because I'd presumed he was going to take the title. But behind, what a | :48:46. | :48:48.
scrap. It changed most probably in the home straight about three times | :48:49. | :48:56.
between Martyn Rooney, Rabah Yousif Bkheit and Dwayne Cowan. Look at how | :48:57. | :49:02.
it is. Look at Martyn Rooney. He seems to be out of the race | :49:03. | :49:07.
completely. Dwayne Cowan, it seems like he is going to edge it. Rabah | :49:08. | :49:10.
Yousif Bkheit is down there to get second. Who has got third? Wow, wow! | :49:11. | :49:24.
Dwayne Cowan throws himself over the line, but I think it's between | :49:25. | :49:28.
Rooney and Cameron Chalmers. That angle favours the nearest one, and | :49:29. | :49:33.
Rooney throws his arm out, pushing your torso forward. He's not silly. | :49:34. | :49:37.
I think what that means is that Rooney will be in the relay squad. | :49:38. | :49:43.
Charmers is picked for the under 23s, and I was talking to James | :49:44. | :49:48.
Hillier yesterday and he said that is his main target and, unless he | :49:49. | :49:51.
qualifies automatically, I think that's what they would target, but | :49:52. | :49:56.
it would be great for him to be in the relay squad. Sitting around with | :49:57. | :50:01.
the team, getting the whole team experience, going around and sitting | :50:02. | :50:04.
with some of the best athletes of all time, who will be in the | :50:05. | :50:08.
village. It will be great experience for him, but what a race. The 400 | :50:09. | :50:13.
metres never lets you down for excitement. Look at Matthew | :50:14. | :50:18.
Hudson-Smith's time, under 45 seconds, 44.90 nine. I hope he's | :50:19. | :50:26.
smiling. Matt is always smiling, win or lose. But you did it in style. I | :50:27. | :50:32.
wanted to execute and get qualification to London and go from | :50:33. | :50:37.
there. There is so much strength in this event in Britain these days, so | :50:38. | :50:41.
to come through the British trials is one thing, but it must elevate | :50:42. | :50:46.
you to think, on a world stage, the kind of performances you can put in | :50:47. | :50:50.
and times in the 44s, so you can challenge there as well. I've been | :50:51. | :50:54.
doing this eventful two years. Trying to do what the guys like the | :50:55. | :51:05.
record holder, Euan, what they do. A quick word from Rabah Yousif Bkheit, | :51:06. | :51:09.
you made it as well. You always seem to deliver the goods when it | :51:10. | :51:14.
matters. For me, I'm trying to come here and make the team. I've been | :51:15. | :51:20.
struggling with injuries for the last year, and earlier this year. | :51:21. | :51:25.
But I'm getting back in shape. All I have to do is go and do the time, | :51:26. | :51:30.
which I'm more than capable of. I hope you do that thing. New in | :51:31. | :51:38.
Essex, I'm so sorry. It's been a crazy season for me. -- new Hama in | :51:39. | :51:42.
Essex. But promise I will come and do a match for you. That will please | :51:43. | :51:53.
everybody in Newham in Essex. He ran a great time. Not quite the | :51:54. | :51:57.
qualifying time he wanted, but almost a season's best. Matthew | :51:58. | :52:03.
Hudson-Smith, very good indeed. Cameron Chalmers held off Dwayne | :52:04. | :52:07.
Cowan, who threw himself over the line. It's always favours us looking | :52:08. | :52:13.
from this site, but certainly those five men... George Caddick didn't | :52:14. | :52:20.
perform. Lots to sort out in the individual and relay selections in | :52:21. | :52:29.
the next two or three weeks. Another Newham | :52:30. | :52:43.
athlete is Robbie Grabarz. That was a world-class height. It was too | :52:44. | :52:50.
much for him today. The time clearance of 2.26, and a victory for | :52:51. | :52:57.
Robbie Grabarz ahead of the World Championships. Trying to find some | :52:58. | :53:01.
form and some confidence. He is in good shape. Big smiles from him. | :53:02. | :53:11.
Onto the women's 800 metres final, and another cracking race. Ellie | :53:12. | :53:16.
Baker, Hannah Segrave made it through as the fastest loser, | :53:17. | :53:21.
Alexandra Bell, Lynsey Sharp, Mhairi Hendry. Marilyn Okoro is back to | :53:22. | :53:26.
contest the British championships as well. She only knows one way to run | :53:27. | :53:33.
and she did it in the heats yesterday, she went out hard and got | :53:34. | :53:37.
herself into the finals is fastest loser. It is great to see her back, | :53:38. | :53:43.
running 2.2 this year. The qualifying is 2.1. A personal best | :53:44. | :53:51.
for Mhairi Hendry in the rounds. Lynsey Sharp getting better with | :53:52. | :53:56.
every race, looking good. She'll be competing in the Diamond League in | :53:57. | :54:05.
Lausanne on Thursday. Here, she takes on the women trying to make | :54:06. | :54:09.
the place in the team. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke had an injury scare in | :54:10. | :54:12.
the last couple of months, but she looks as though she was certainly | :54:13. | :54:16.
not going to be too far away in the heats. Adelle Tracey, having a great | :54:17. | :54:22.
season. PB at 800 and 1500 metres. She wants to cement her place. Can | :54:23. | :54:29.
Alexandra Bell get back to her great form from last year and put herself | :54:30. | :54:30.
in the mix? American -based Hannah Segrave, 2.2, | :54:31. | :54:45.
personal best this year. She almost missed the start yesterday when the | :54:46. | :54:52.
gun went. And Ellie Baker. She will hope to run well after having seen | :54:53. | :55:00.
Kyle Langford, her boyfriend, not going so well in the mains 800. -- | :55:01. | :55:03.
in the men's 800. She missed it again! Yes, she maybe | :55:04. | :55:19.
needs to practice. Away we go. She was in lane two, got off to a slow | :55:20. | :55:24.
start, at the start, Lynsey Sharp and Adelle Tracey, Shelayna | :55:25. | :55:30.
Oskan-Clarke. Laura Muir is it as well but she won't be contesting | :55:31. | :55:33.
this event at the championships. Not superfast. Lindsay is where she'll | :55:34. | :55:39.
want to be, sitting on the shoulder of whoever is leading it. And | :55:40. | :55:43.
Marilyn Okoro, she wants to get up there. Adelle Tracey sitting on the | :55:44. | :55:50.
curb. Adelle Tracey not in the best position, tucked on the curb in | :55:51. | :55:53.
third or fourth. I think they were probably expecting Marilyn to go to | :55:54. | :55:58.
the front and take it a bit harder. That leaves Shelayna Oskan-Clarke | :55:59. | :56:02.
and Lynsey Sharp is the number one and two this season, controlling it | :56:03. | :56:05.
from the front. It again going to be a question of whose nerve holds the | :56:06. | :56:13.
best. 61.8 through 400 metres. Adelle Tracey edges her way out. | :56:14. | :56:20.
Shelayna Oskan-Clarke had an incredible pedigree in | :56:21. | :56:22.
championships, either the British championships or the world and | :56:23. | :56:25.
Olympic games. She finds her best on the day. Marilyn Okoro is going | :56:26. | :56:35.
well. Who will come out on top? You'd favour Lynsey Sharp in this | :56:36. | :56:39.
kind of race, but Shelayna Oskan-Clarke is strong. Does she | :56:40. | :56:46.
have the place in her legs? Alexandra Bell and Marilyn Okoro | :56:47. | :56:51.
trying to get back involved. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke under pressure | :56:52. | :56:53.
from Lindsay Clark. Adelle Tracey gritting her teeth. These three are | :56:54. | :56:57.
moving away from the rest of the field. Look at Shelayna | :56:58. | :57:02.
Oskan-Clarke, and Adelle Tracey trying to get there. Lynsey Sharp | :57:03. | :57:05.
fighting to get past her. Hats off to Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, once again | :57:06. | :57:12.
proving to be unbeatable, and Adelle Tracey may have just sneaked in to | :57:13. | :57:15.
take second, the second guaranteed is blocked -- guaranteed spot. Three | :57:16. | :57:23.
into two doesn't go, and the one person you'd think would have been | :57:24. | :57:27.
the favourite looked as though she hasn't made it. All smiles from | :57:28. | :57:32.
Adelle Tracey. Congratulations to her. So impressed with Shelayna | :57:33. | :57:36.
Oskan-Clarke, controlling it and having the confidence and, as ever, | :57:37. | :57:39.
the competitive grip to drive it through at the end. Lynsey Sharp | :57:40. | :57:43.
will be disappointed, to say the least. When it comes to selection, | :57:44. | :57:49.
we don't think of the selectors, but they are our three best 800 metres | :57:50. | :57:56.
runners, and I'm pretty sure that Lynsey Sharp will find herself on | :57:57. | :58:02.
the team. You'd expect to see that. Both of the 800 metres races here | :58:03. | :58:07.
today have been messy races. They have given a few headaches, but this | :58:08. | :58:10.
should be more straightforward, because the top three runners | :58:11. | :58:14.
finished in the top three positions. Lynsey Sharp made some tactical | :58:15. | :58:19.
errors, I think, underestimating Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, who always | :58:20. | :58:22.
rises to the occasion and gets it right. She might have had some | :58:23. | :58:25.
niggles coming in today, but she judged it and controlled it | :58:26. | :58:30.
perfectly. Hats off to Adelle Tracey, who fought hard down the | :58:31. | :58:34.
home straight and didn't sit back. She just snatched second, I think, | :58:35. | :58:39.
on the line in front of Lynsey Sharp, who comes into it as the | :58:40. | :58:43.
fastest British athlete this year and, I think, should get the nod to | :58:44. | :58:45.
go to the London World Championships. But she has posed | :58:46. | :58:50.
herself some questions. She has struggled a bit in racing this year, | :58:51. | :58:54.
racing best in a mixed race where she hasn't had to think about where | :58:55. | :59:02.
she places herself. A great win for Shelayna Oskan-Clarke once again. | :59:03. | :59:08.
She does it so consistently. Adelle Tracey, by 100th of a second, is | :59:09. | :59:11.
guaranteed her place in the team for London. Both thrilled to make the | :59:12. | :59:20.
team with a guaranteed place by one 100th of a second, in your case, | :59:21. | :59:25.
Adelle, and in a dominant way for you. I wasn't sure how the race | :59:26. | :59:32.
would be run. I had a few feelings of how it would go. I had to be | :59:33. | :59:35.
ready for whatever it was going to go. It had a sprint finish. It was | :59:36. | :59:43.
going faster, I had to hang on and get a spring finish. It didn't go | :59:44. | :59:49.
out too fast, but it's best to be in a good position. I held my position | :59:50. | :59:54.
all the way through. I know I'm quite strong at the end. And I won! | :59:55. | :59:58.
I want to come and confirm my spot, but really I wanted to retain my | :59:59. | :00:05.
title as well, so I'm happy. Congratulations. Adelle, you look | :00:06. | :00:11.
happy. I had a few issues in the summer, and it's awesome to be here, | :00:12. | :00:16.
in the final, and to get automatic selection. So really happy. Can you | :00:17. | :00:21.
imagine what it will be like in London with the home crowd? I can't | :00:22. | :00:26.
think about it now! To be back in that stadium and being able to | :00:27. | :00:30.
perform there, the home games, it will be really fun. Well done to the | :00:31. | :00:32.
pair of you. Plenty of action still to come in | :00:33. | :00:42.
the last hour here at Birmingham. Next it's the men's 110 metre | :00:43. | :00:50.
hurdles final. Hoping to seal a World Championships but in the | :00:51. | :00:57.
women's 200 metres, Twell. Of course, the men's 200 metres, a | :00:58. | :01:02.
world-class field battling for spots in London this summer. | :01:03. | :01:15.
It was a fantastic race, we've seen some great races. Sometimes the | :01:16. | :01:22.
quality hasn't been the highest but that was very very good indeed. The | :01:23. | :01:26.
free you would expect to go to the World Championships and the two | :01:27. | :01:35.
guaranteed our Shelayna Oskan-Clarke and Adelle TRacey taking it by 31 | :01:36. | :01:41.
hundredths of a second from the next closest. | :01:42. | :01:46.
The women's long jump is underway. This is the UK indoor record-holder, | :01:47. | :01:57.
Ugen. Third in the world indoors last year. Fast on the approach, | :01:58. | :02:04.
it's the board well. Always a tense time for the athletes, the opening | :02:05. | :02:15.
jumps. That have a look at this. Technical fault? A little bit of | :02:16. | :02:19.
thinking, a very long step onto the board, doesn't carry as much speed | :02:20. | :02:23.
off. The way she generates speed, has a very rocky style on the | :02:24. | :02:27.
runway. I think it's a good opening jump, she's going to get by more and | :02:28. | :02:32.
she can build from there. Good conditions, as we saw in the men's | :02:33. | :02:38.
long jump. Lorraine goes into the lead with 6.5 two. Jazmin Sawyers | :02:39. | :02:44.
round two, fouled in the first round. She hits the board really | :02:45. | :02:50.
well. Similar kind of distance. What are your thoughts, Tony? Just a | :02:51. | :02:57.
slight foul on that. Seems to chop a little bit, then lengthens on the | :02:58. | :03:01.
last stride. Hasn't got enough room really to operate and jump off the | :03:02. | :03:07.
board. There we go. Just goes a little long, leaves her toes hanging | :03:08. | :03:12.
out. Got to be about five centimetres. If she tidies that up, | :03:13. | :03:16.
put her foot back underneath, stands up on the board till her hips are | :03:17. | :03:20.
beneath her foot. She needs a jump in the third round to get through, | :03:21. | :03:24.
otherwise she won't get another three. The barriers are out for the | :03:25. | :03:31.
final of the men's 110 metres hurdles. There is no David Feeney. | :03:32. | :03:51.
There is the Harrow athlete, Perera, 20 years old, yet to go below 14 | :03:52. | :04:01.
seconds. 14.09 this season. Quite an open race, this, again. Jake Porter | :04:02. | :04:07.
might have a chance. Bronze-medallist at the indoor | :04:08. | :04:21.
Championships. Khai Riley-La Borde. Powerful figure, 13.59, new personal | :04:22. | :04:27.
best this season. It might come down to a battle between the two men | :04:28. | :04:34.
outside him, David King in lane six. 13.48 his new PB this year. And | :04:35. | :04:40.
David Omoregie has run 13.34 this year. He has run in the 13.20s. He's | :04:41. | :04:48.
got that basic speed. Between the barriers. James Weaver still just | :04:49. | :04:59.
19, down to 13.37 this year. Another Birchfield Harrier makes up the | :05:00. | :05:05.
line-up in lane now, Edirin Okoro. Much has been made of the absence of | :05:06. | :05:12.
Andrew, who asked the powers that be if he might be excused to run in | :05:13. | :05:16.
Paris in the Diamond League. He did and he ran very well. He justified | :05:17. | :05:21.
the decision. 13.14 to go third in the UK all-time list behind Tony | :05:22. | :05:25.
Jarrett and the big man sitting beside me. 13.1 four. Not Steve | :05:26. | :05:32.
Matley, Colin, it's you we're talking about. | :05:33. | :05:41.
King and Omoregie perhaps the favourite here to challenge for the | :05:42. | :05:52.
UK title. Final of the men's 110 metres hurdles. Cleanly away, a good | :05:53. | :06:00.
start. He's in trouble, Omoregie, King now. David King is clear, he's | :06:01. | :06:05.
going to take this title, he becomes the champion. 13.5 five. Hands to | :06:06. | :06:11.
the head and the heavens for David Omoregie because he lost that in the | :06:12. | :06:14.
opening couple of barriers. It all went wrong. David King, it's not his | :06:15. | :06:22.
concern use the champion. He's going to the World Championships. He is | :06:23. | :06:29.
the UK champion. As soon as Omoregie stumbled and stuttered and fell | :06:30. | :06:33.
away, it was his race to lose. He retained his composure and his | :06:34. | :06:37.
technique. Omoregie, what might have been. Yes, I was watching David. He | :06:38. | :06:43.
seemed to be labouring in the blocks. I was very anxious whether | :06:44. | :06:48.
he would put himself through. He was the one who kept the cool head. | :06:49. | :06:55.
Watch this, at the gun. He smashed that first barrier, didn't he? Held | :06:56. | :07:01.
back going into verbal two, ended up rolling all over the place. The high | :07:02. | :07:05.
hurdles are unforgiving. Make a mistake, very difficult to claw any | :07:06. | :07:14.
ground quickly. Look at this angle. Worked hard. Ended up sailing over | :07:15. | :07:20.
the second hurdle. When you go over about an inch and a half higher than | :07:21. | :07:23.
normal, what happens, you just collapse, your body isn't used to | :07:24. | :07:28.
hitting the ground and being able to move on. That is exactly what | :07:29. | :07:31.
happened to David. Lost all his pace. Have a look from here. | :07:32. | :07:36.
Look what happens here. Second to left. Catches the first hurdle, | :07:37. | :07:44.
pitches him into the next one. See how high he goes? Then he collapses, | :07:45. | :07:49.
takes his speed away. Everybody else is smooth and silky, pulls away | :07:50. | :07:53.
instantly. There is no room for you to get back into the race. It was a | :07:54. | :08:01.
good battle between Jake Porter and Khai Riley-La Borde for second. | :08:02. | :08:05.
Eventually it was Khai Riley-La Borde who took it. David King again | :08:06. | :08:08.
just clipping that barrier but was pretty impressive hurdling from | :08:09. | :08:13.
David King. He takes the title, he's heading to the World Championships, | :08:14. | :08:16.
he's the UK champion. He's talking to Phil Jones. We saw the replay on | :08:17. | :08:21.
the big screen of you crossing the line, sweet moment for you. | :08:22. | :08:24.
Absolutely amazing, I'm over the moon. To qualify for the world | :08:25. | :08:32.
champs in London feels so, so good. We're chatting about what you go | :08:33. | :08:36.
through to get to this point, then have to deliver when you most need | :08:37. | :08:40.
to. The satisfaction it must give you is incredible. A long process, | :08:41. | :08:49.
it really is. Going so, so well. Over the moon for the play-off | :08:50. | :08:54.
today. Any imagine what it will be like in London? I can't, but I will | :08:55. | :08:58.
at the London anniversary games next week, I'm sure. See you at the World | :08:59. | :09:02.
Championships, congratulations again. David King... He only just | :09:03. | :09:10.
has the qualifying standard right on at 13.4 eight. He had back | :09:11. | :09:15.
previously. He'll go into the Championships. Khai Riley-La Borde | :09:16. | :09:20.
against second place. If you can find between now and the 9th of | :09:21. | :09:25.
July, midnight... He has defined his personal best to earn his | :09:26. | :09:29.
convocation. Second place for him, third for Jake Porter and down in | :09:30. | :09:30.
fifth is Omoregie. You can look at the four men think | :09:31. | :09:37.
you know how things will pan out, but the hurdles of any of the track | :09:38. | :09:40.
events is the one that is fraught with potential mishaps, dangers and | :09:41. | :09:45.
mistakes. It is from beginning to end. The hurdles and Steeplechase | :09:46. | :09:48.
are the ones where, really, you've got to be on your a game before the | :09:49. | :09:55.
gun fires. Omoregie will be in the lap of the gods of the selectors. | :09:56. | :10:01.
Steve Cram has joined us. It's not called by the way, I don't know what | :10:02. | :10:07.
you are on about. I promise you it was earlier, even Paula Radcliffe, | :10:08. | :10:12.
who is hard as nails, was wearing a jacket. An impressive display from | :10:13. | :10:21.
Andy Bouchard. Is moved up a level in the last two years. He came back | :10:22. | :10:27.
in the 1500 metres. He said his coach wanted him to do a training | :10:28. | :10:31.
session. I'd rather run in the 1500 heats. Middle of the race, Andy | :10:32. | :10:38.
Burnham put in a good kilometre. This is a guy who has just decided, | :10:39. | :10:43.
you know what, I can compete at world level, I've seen what Mo Farah | :10:44. | :10:48.
can do, I can do that, he trained hard, works hard, focused. He's a | :10:49. | :10:52.
great character, has a lot of self-confidence, that's what he | :10:53. | :10:56.
brings to the track when he races. I saw him in Doha at the beginning of | :10:57. | :11:00.
the season, against Kenyans and Ethiopians, not fazed, he get in | :11:01. | :11:05.
there. How much confidence he got from that performance last summer in | :11:06. | :11:08.
Rio has bled into his winter training, coming out here in summer, | :11:09. | :11:12.
not having Mo Farah here, it's possible to put them side by side. | :11:13. | :11:16.
When you are in the shadow of somebody like Mo Farah it's tough, | :11:17. | :11:21.
but then you can find your mojo, work out how to navigate these big | :11:22. | :11:24.
Championships. He can feel fairly confident going into the summer. | :11:25. | :11:29.
Very confident, he talks about the turning point in the world Cross | :11:30. | :11:33.
country when he realised what he needed to do, went away, trained | :11:34. | :11:36.
hard and made the big breakthrough last year. His grew. It was being | :11:37. | :11:41.
their training alongside the likes of Mo Farah. He works hard and his | :11:42. | :11:44.
winning championships but there is not that much difference between | :11:45. | :11:48.
what I'm doing and what he's doing, why can't I compete? He doesn't see | :11:49. | :11:52.
any reason he shouldn't. It's reflected in how hard he trains and | :11:53. | :11:56.
races. It's good to see him having fun with it and being that character | :11:57. | :12:01.
he is. It helped him go to the major championships and get the best out | :12:02. | :12:04.
of himself. He takes running seriously. He's a joy to hear in | :12:05. | :12:08.
interviews because he loves athletics so much. The crowds love | :12:09. | :12:12.
seeing Mo Farah. Is there an argument he might come here to run | :12:13. | :12:16.
1500 metres, even five K. He could run ten K midweek. He made that plan | :12:17. | :12:23.
a good few months ago. He made it clear. The British athletics agreed. | :12:24. | :12:27.
Any athlete for whom British athletics agrees for you not to be | :12:28. | :12:31.
here, won't come. Because they want to plan, someone like Mo wants to | :12:32. | :12:36.
plan for the World Championships. The race on Tuesday night was good, | :12:37. | :12:42.
I think he went out with real intent, really hard over the first | :12:43. | :12:46.
5000. There was no one for him to race really in the second half, he | :12:47. | :12:50.
ended up backing off the pace and just winning. I think he would have | :12:51. | :12:54.
loved to go under 27 minutes, he didn't quite achieve that. He knows | :12:55. | :12:59.
he's OK, he's where he needs to be. He's got some quick races coming up | :13:00. | :13:03.
in London next week, he may go to Monaco and do 1500, he may not. | :13:04. | :13:09.
Coming back to Andrew Butchart and Mo Farah, I look at the Kenyan and | :13:10. | :13:12.
Ethiopian teams and don't see much threat. Some of the best canyons are | :13:13. | :13:19.
running for America. -- some of the best Kenyans are running for | :13:20. | :13:27.
America. Mo is on track, don't worry, he's good. People like Andrew | :13:28. | :13:31.
Butchart in there with him, we can look forward to him. We'll see him | :13:32. | :13:36.
next week. The women's 5000 metres next. I could get the thoughts of | :13:37. | :13:39.
Paula or I could let her run to the commentary box and join Andrew | :13:40. | :13:42.
Cotter, which will be a safer bet for you. Committed a macro I'm | :13:43. | :13:48.
eternally grateful to you. I'm watching Paula, look at her go. No | :13:49. | :13:53.
change of pace, moving away steadily over here. This is the line-up for | :13:54. | :14:00.
the women's 5000 metres. Jessica Judd is a starter. She gave | :14:01. | :14:05.
everything about 55 minutes ago in the women's 1500 metres to take | :14:06. | :14:12.
second place. She goes here. A former champion in this event is | :14:13. | :14:18.
also in there. Trying to count the number of starters. We a couple of | :14:19. | :14:23.
dropouts. That is how they start. We'll shortly get Paula's thoughts | :14:24. | :14:29.
on recovery time from 1500 metres which was no more than an hour ago, | :14:30. | :14:37.
just under an hour ago it finished. Names to look out for Wilby McColgan | :14:38. | :14:46.
and Twell. I'll commentate on Paula Radcliffe running below me, she | :14:47. | :14:49.
doesn't know I'm commentating on her. We'll pretend it hasn't | :14:50. | :14:54.
happened. Emelia Gorecka has had injury problems. She's gone close to | :14:55. | :15:03.
15 minutes in her time. Jessica Judd, she is running on a sheer | :15:04. | :15:11.
enjoyment and excitement now. What a great when it was in the 1500 metres | :15:12. | :15:16.
for Jessica Judd. To take second place behind Laura Weightman. And | :15:17. | :15:20.
earn her place in the World Championships in that event. There | :15:21. | :15:23.
is McColgan, who has the qualifying standard. There are four Britons | :15:24. | :15:28.
with the qualifying standard in this event, Laura Muir being one of them, | :15:29. | :15:32.
Laura Weightman one of them, she ran a very good 5000 recently. And Steph | :15:33. | :15:40.
Twell. Steph Twell and McColgan will be the ones to watch. You might say | :15:41. | :15:45.
Jessica Judd because she is a potentially good 5,000-metre runner. | :15:46. | :15:47.
Paula Radcliffe is here, we'll talk about how you recover from a hard | :15:48. | :15:52.
1500 metres within 55 minutes to try to get ready for a 5000. You're | :15:53. | :15:53.
shaking your head. She's just trying to say, I can do | :15:54. | :16:03.
it the other way round and I can do it better. It's a little bit of a | :16:04. | :16:08.
crazy decision, can we say? But we talked about the fact that Jess is | :16:09. | :16:15.
re-found her enjoyment, and she is taking the pressure that she was | :16:16. | :16:20.
putting on herself in racing, and she has taken it off herself and | :16:21. | :16:23.
decided to go out and enjoy the way she is racing and what she gets from | :16:24. | :16:29.
it. I think she feels she can get a bit quicker in 5000 metres. Whether | :16:30. | :16:33.
the best way to do that is front running a 1500 metres run where she | :16:34. | :16:38.
ran a very fast last 800 metres, which was very quick, and to come | :16:39. | :16:43.
back in such a short time around -- turnaround, it asks a lot of mental | :16:44. | :16:49.
questions of everybody in the field. I can see on the back of Eilish | :16:50. | :16:54.
McColgan's leg that she has a bit of tape. She has struggled with a | :16:55. | :17:00.
hamstring tear and she was wondering whether to come and race, but the | :17:01. | :17:04.
decision was almost made by looking to see what Jessica Judd would do. I | :17:05. | :17:08.
don't think Laura Weightman wants to double up at all. Laura Muir is | :17:09. | :17:11.
talking about it. Stephanie Twell, front running that will find time in | :17:12. | :17:16.
Watford and it well. Probably would have been the favourite if Eilish | :17:17. | :17:23.
McColgan hadn't turned up. Katrina Wootton leading it out. She was | :17:24. | :17:27.
quite close to the qualifying time of a 10,000 metres run in the | :17:28. | :17:32.
trials, and it isn't that far away. I think Jessica Judd would love this | :17:33. | :17:37.
to be a pedestrian race. Five from the back, a couple of places behind | :17:38. | :17:41.
Eilish McColgan. The pace is being picked up my Katrina Wootton, and | :17:42. | :17:50.
techniques ahead of Holly Rees. Those two looking to stretch it out, | :17:51. | :17:54.
saying this is our race and we are looking for a time. At the back, | :17:55. | :18:00.
Jessica Judd, it's a real stretch. Eilish McColgan, with that magnesium | :18:01. | :18:03.
tape on her right leg, a right hamstring... Ideally, she wouldn't | :18:04. | :18:09.
want to be racing here. She is likely to be selected anyway, but | :18:10. | :18:14.
you can't take the risk. She hasn't been given assurances that others | :18:15. | :18:17.
have been that she doesn't need to run, so she has to run. If Jessica | :18:18. | :18:21.
Judd were running this having not run the 1500 metres, Stephanie Twell | :18:22. | :18:26.
and Eilish McColgan would be going hell for leather, but you have to | :18:27. | :18:31.
suspect that it's a tall order for Jessica Judd to run that hard 1500 | :18:32. | :18:36.
and come out and be competitive in this race. Steve Cram just walked | :18:37. | :18:40.
past shaking his head, because he saw and congratulated her as she | :18:41. | :18:45.
came off after the 1500 metres and you wasn't sure if she was going to | :18:46. | :18:48.
come back, she was going to discuss it with her dad, and the next thing | :18:49. | :18:53.
he sees she is out here running. It puts a lot on the body. The look on | :18:54. | :18:59.
her face, she is trying just to stay focused, seeing what is happening in | :19:00. | :19:03.
the race and commit as little energy as possible in the early stages. | :19:04. | :19:08.
Just saying, why not, have some fun. She is enjoying her running again. | :19:09. | :19:14.
Sitting in the middle of the pack, not far way from Eilish McColgan. | :19:15. | :19:20.
Women's long jump, Lorraine Ugen leads with 6.50 two. A foul in the | :19:21. | :19:30.
second round. Pretty much unthreatened. She was a good 20 | :19:31. | :19:35.
centimetres ahead of the rest of the field. Another jump around about the | :19:36. | :19:39.
6.5 metres jump. She looks quite sharp. Just forward rotating into | :19:40. | :19:46.
the pit. As she takes off, that's good. Her arms world around. That's | :19:47. | :19:53.
difficult to say. They whirl around at the site. If she gets them up | :19:54. | :19:59.
long above her head, she rotates and drops into the pit, so she misses | :20:00. | :20:03.
out on quite a bit of distance. Lorraine Ugen, out in front with | :20:04. | :20:10.
6.52 in the first round. UK record holder, 6.50 nine. It is a slight | :20:11. | :20:16.
improvement at the halfway stage. Jazmin Sawyers, her home track. The | :20:17. | :20:23.
reigning champion. Under some pressure with two files. Jazmin | :20:24. | :20:28.
Sawyers looking down the rest of the competitors. She needs a jump in | :20:29. | :20:33.
excess of six metres, or around six flat would get her into the top | :20:34. | :20:38.
eight. A cut to get into the second half of the competition, and only | :20:39. | :20:41.
eight athletes will have three more attempts. Jazmin Sawyers, an two | :20:42. | :20:49.
fouls, need something. That was good off the board. A decent job, 6.5 | :20:50. | :20:54.
metres. She is looking back anxiously at the board. We haven't | :20:55. | :21:00.
seen a red flag. She isn't celebrating yet. Tense moments for | :21:01. | :21:03.
Jazmin Sawyers. It's a red flag, Tony. And three fouls. Let's look at | :21:04. | :21:14.
that. That looks like the smallest foul. So small, about a centimetre. | :21:15. | :21:19.
If I'm brutally honest, most of that distance came out at the back. She | :21:20. | :21:24.
bounced out really strong and hard. Unfortunately, she stuck her foot | :21:25. | :21:28.
out at the front, and this is really unfair. She only needed six metres, | :21:29. | :21:32.
and that's a jump she can do day in, day out. Back to the final of the | :21:33. | :21:39.
women's 5000 metres, and three of the main contenders have been | :21:40. | :21:43.
running pretty much together. Eilish McColgan, Stephanie Twell and | :21:44. | :21:50.
Jessica Judd trailing them. Jessica Judd running within an hour after | :21:51. | :21:54.
her 1500 metres final, where she finished second. Out in front is | :21:55. | :22:00.
Katrina Wootton of Coventry, a 15.30 one. She is trying to get close to | :22:01. | :22:07.
her personal best. About seven places back, you can see the | :22:08. | :22:10.
familiar bobbing hairstyle of Eilish McColgan, that long legged style. | :22:11. | :22:15.
Behind her, Jessica Judd, and Stephanie Twell is between them. | :22:16. | :22:23.
Though other three desperate they are the three likely contenders, or | :22:24. | :22:25.
they would be if Jessica Judd were not so obviously tied. We wonder why | :22:26. | :22:30.
she's doing it. She doesn't need to do that. -- were she not so | :22:31. | :22:36.
obviously tired. I would think she would feel the pace in the race. It | :22:37. | :22:43.
isn't a stunning pace, but it's starting to do a bit of damage to | :22:44. | :22:46.
this field. A quick shout out for Emelia Gorecka as well, who is | :22:47. | :22:52.
sitting there in the Great Britain kit and the sunglasses, with number | :22:53. | :22:56.
13 on her hip. It's been a wrong road back from injury struggles for | :22:57. | :23:00.
her, so it's good to see her back. She has been advised by Chris | :23:01. | :23:04.
Thompson and Gemma Simpson in training, and she is starting to | :23:05. | :23:07.
make inroads back to the form she was showing a couple of years ago. | :23:08. | :23:12.
... A group of about 12 athletes, and Jessica Judd slip into the back | :23:13. | :23:19.
of that group. Also near the back are Eilish McColgan and Stephanie | :23:20. | :23:21.
Twell. No signs yet from Jessica Judd. Her style always looks a bit | :23:22. | :23:28.
ragged. She's got great talent but she never looks entirely | :23:29. | :23:29.
comfortable, so it's difficult to tell from her face. My goodness, | :23:30. | :23:36.
this is hard work. Stephanie Twell and Eilish McColgan look more | :23:37. | :23:39.
composed. But she still hanging in there. We remind you that, you know, | :23:40. | :23:46.
the qualifying standard is held in this event by Laura Muir, who is | :23:47. | :23:50.
going to double up on that topic, Neil back said that, with that | :23:51. | :23:55.
injury, she had a 1% chance of doubling up successfully, but Laura | :23:56. | :24:00.
Muir still insists she'll do it. Neil Black was quoted making those | :24:01. | :24:05.
comments and, pretty much 24 hours later, Andy Jung had been speaking | :24:06. | :24:11.
to journalists and reiterating that, yes, Laura Muir had a precautionary | :24:12. | :24:14.
measure of missing a couple of weeks of training to make sure everything | :24:15. | :24:18.
was 100% but she was back on the track, racing strongly. I don't | :24:19. | :24:22.
think they were going to commit a something -- to something as | :24:23. | :24:26.
ambitious as a double World Championships against the calibre of | :24:27. | :24:34.
athletes lined up, the 1500 and then coming back in the 5000 metres. It's | :24:35. | :24:38.
a big ask. If Laura Muir is not in her best shape, that is a big | :24:39. | :24:44.
challenge to take on. I think they wouldn't be doing that if they were | :24:45. | :24:50.
not 100% confident in her training. Katrina Wootton, 31-year-old from | :24:51. | :24:53.
Coventry, is the front runner, setting a decent pace and just | :24:54. | :25:00.
waiting behind Emelia Gorecka is Eilish McColgan and Stephanie Twell. | :25:01. | :25:03.
Stephanie Twell is a well told story. But the qualifying standard | :25:04. | :25:10.
with a run in Watford a couple of weeks ago, but she has had two | :25:11. | :25:14.
distinct careers. She was such a talented junior. She had run 14.54 | :25:15. | :25:21.
for 5000 metres is a few after her 21st birthday in 2010, then she was | :25:22. | :25:26.
running in Belgium and broke her ankle. It was a long way back from | :25:27. | :25:31.
that. She is running very successfully again. Still just ahead | :25:32. | :25:40.
of Eilish McColgan. Jessica Judd hanging in, running on empty, but | :25:41. | :25:45.
still running pretty well. With a word to Stephanie Twell, what she | :25:46. | :25:51.
lost was efficiency in her foot, with the amount of metalwork and | :25:52. | :25:55.
reconstruction she had done to that ankle. She lost the top end pace and | :25:56. | :26:04.
reaction in that foot, so she had to recalibrate her career path a bit, | :26:05. | :26:09.
moving away from the 1500 two events more like the 5000, and maybe | :26:10. | :26:13.
ultimately she'll move up as far as the marathon. She was pretty happy | :26:14. | :26:17.
with her first run out at 10,000 metres, and she has the mental | :26:18. | :26:19.
strength to cope with longer difference this -- distances. Emelia | :26:20. | :26:28.
Gorecka bridging that gap to be able to keep track of the rest of the | :26:29. | :26:32.
field, like Charlotte Arter behind her. Eilish McColgan starting to | :26:33. | :26:38.
move around. Eilish McColgan, coming back from injury, would have | :26:39. | :26:43.
preferred a good, sustained pace like this. She doesn't want to have | :26:44. | :26:48.
to change pace quickly. She missed a bit of training but not much. And | :26:49. | :26:52.
she is an expert on getting by on crosstraining. A good, brave race | :26:53. | :26:57.
from Holly Rees, putting herself out there. She hasn't quite gone 60 | :26:58. | :27:02.
minutes yet. Being reeled in a bid by the group, led by Emelia Gorecka. | :27:03. | :27:08.
Look at the long, easy stride of Eilish McColgan, bringing her into | :27:09. | :27:12.
pole position. She must have one of the longest strides of women's | :27:13. | :27:18.
distance runners. Once she picks up the pace and she would have to go | :27:19. | :27:21.
for it later in the race, it's quite a sight to behold. Stephanie Twell a | :27:22. | :27:27.
couple of places behind. Here comes Jessica Judd. What can you say about | :27:28. | :27:32.
this? A brave decision. Emelia Gorecka at the front. Eilish | :27:33. | :27:36.
McColgan goes with her. Jessica Judd moving along. A little bit of a loss | :27:37. | :27:43.
to comment on Jessica Judd, because you wouldn't think this were | :27:44. | :27:47.
possible. There is still a long way to go in this race, but she is | :27:48. | :27:51.
putting herself in prime position to challenge, although Stephanie Twell | :27:52. | :27:54.
also looks strong in about fifth place. I think Stephanie Twell is | :27:55. | :28:01.
playing a clever game, trying to ask mental questions of the others. I | :28:02. | :28:06.
think a lot of them, especially Eilish, would have expected | :28:07. | :28:10.
Stephanie Twell by now to turn this into a sustained run for home, a | :28:11. | :28:13.
long work-out, but she is happily sitting back in about fifth place | :28:14. | :28:18.
and lacking the rate -- and letting the race unfold and leaving it down | :28:19. | :28:22.
to the likes of Eilish McColgan and Emelia Gorecka, who Stephanie Twell | :28:23. | :28:27.
used to train with. Finally, Eilish McColgan moves to the front and | :28:28. | :28:32.
start a gradual wind-up. ... You can see Emelia Gorecka, it's starting to | :28:33. | :28:36.
prove hard work for her after her injury problems. Charlotte Arter of | :28:37. | :28:43.
Cardiff is in third and, behind her, Stephanie Twell and Jessica Judd. | :28:44. | :28:47.
Surely she must be starting to feel the pace now, Jessica Judd, with a | :28:48. | :28:52.
personal best of 15.54 at the end of May. A bit of daylight starting to | :28:53. | :29:00.
open up. Eilish McColgan at the front, with Charlotte Arter behind. | :29:01. | :29:03.
For Emelia Gorecka, this kind of pace would not have been a problem | :29:04. | :29:07.
three years ago but it might be a bit of a stretch now for her to hang | :29:08. | :29:10.
on, as Stephanie Twell maintains contact with Eilish McColgan. An | :29:11. | :29:20.
almost imperceptible lift pace for Eilish McColgan. Charlotte Arter | :29:21. | :29:24.
quietly having a very good race. She's followed every move, not taken | :29:25. | :29:27.
a turn at the front, but putting herself very well. She is now ahead | :29:28. | :29:33.
of Jessica Judd, as the questions start being asked by Eilish | :29:34. | :29:36.
McColgan. Stephanie Twell reacts and goes with it. Jessica Judd | :29:37. | :29:43.
desperately trying to hang the group of three, but the elastic band | :29:44. | :29:46.
stretching. It's starting to a little bit. Eilish McColgan building | :29:47. | :29:52.
that pace. Stephanie Twell hanging with her. Charlotte Arter hanging on | :29:53. | :29:58.
well, 15.40 runner, and Jessica Judd dropping back a little bit. Eilish | :29:59. | :30:02.
McColgan continually lifting the pace a little bit, and Charlotte | :30:03. | :30:05.
Arter losing a bit of contact with her. Eilish McColgan and Stephanie | :30:06. | :30:12.
Twell heading for a confrontation in the final couple of laps. | :30:13. | :30:16.
Five pace as clear as they neared the bell. The questions are really | :30:17. | :30:27.
starting to be asked of Charlotte Arter. The two in front moving well | :30:28. | :30:35.
away. Eilish McColgan starting to unwind those long legs. The body | :30:36. | :30:42.
lean slightly further forward, the stride extends, Eilish McColgan | :30:43. | :30:46.
trying to break Steph Twell. She's hanging on the back of Eilish | :30:47. | :30:49.
McColgan. Different running styles. You can see how much it's hurting | :30:50. | :30:53.
McColgan. She had a little niggle in her hamstring recently. Twell looks | :30:54. | :30:59.
comfortable at the moment, sitting at the back of Eilish McColgan. It's | :31:00. | :31:05.
between these two in the final of the women's 5000 metres and Eilish | :31:06. | :31:09.
McColgan tries to lift the pace. Steph Twell hit the accelerator and | :31:10. | :31:14.
power was a way past Eilish McColgan. She's looked in control of | :31:15. | :31:17.
this race throughout and looked comfortable. Steph Twell, no | :31:18. | :31:21.
catching her now, look at that change of pace, it's what we used to | :31:22. | :31:28.
see from Steph Twell as a youngster. Roaring the way down this home | :31:29. | :31:32.
straight. What an impressive run from Steph Twell. A final 200 metres | :31:33. | :31:36.
to break Eilish McColgan and take second place. That was a change of | :31:37. | :31:41.
speed. Good third place for Charlotte Arter. Jessica Judd | :31:42. | :31:48.
crosses the line in fifth place after her curious experiment. What a | :31:49. | :31:58.
run that was from Steph Twell. Congratulations to Charlotte Arter. | :31:59. | :32:02.
Steph Twell knows how good a run it was from her. Impressive from Steph | :32:03. | :32:06.
Twell, that absolute change of pace was too much for Eilish McColgan. | :32:07. | :32:11.
Definitely too much for Jessica Judd. We talked about how good it | :32:12. | :32:15.
was to seek Jessica Judd back, it's great to see Steph Twell finishing | :32:16. | :32:19.
like that. Looking back to her old self with the pace she had over the | :32:20. | :32:26.
final 200 metres. Yes, she asked questions of her hamstrings, she | :32:27. | :32:30.
asked whether she needed to come and race, but she was sprinting hard | :32:31. | :32:34.
round the last 200 metres and Twell moved so smoothly and quickly away | :32:35. | :32:39.
from her. You can see the way she moves, the way she picks her heels | :32:40. | :32:43.
up behind her, Steph is running a lot better, a lot more confident in | :32:44. | :32:47.
her running than she was a couple of weeks ago. Certainly last year. It's | :32:48. | :32:53.
done her confidence a world of good to go to Watford, get the qualifying | :32:54. | :32:57.
time she needed for the 5000 metres, then to come here and yet again with | :32:58. | :33:02.
the British trials and to be British champion one more time. It means a | :33:03. | :33:07.
lot to Steph Twell. She can go buy and get ready and come back for | :33:08. | :33:12.
London to give it her absolute best. Eilish McColgan has done what she | :33:13. | :33:18.
needed to do in coming out racing. Twell finishing just ahead of Eilish | :33:19. | :33:22.
McColgan to take the 5000 metres title. Both of them are with Phil. | :33:23. | :33:27.
Fantastic day for Scotland, so many great Scottish results. That was | :33:28. | :33:33.
like a 1500 metre finish of old from you. It was fantastic, the heat | :33:34. | :33:36.
today caused the race to be slower. It was tactical. I had the result of | :33:37. | :33:46.
Chris and Josh qualifying, I was like, come on, Scots. What is the | :33:47. | :33:49.
talk about trying to make that place, that is so coveted this year? | :33:50. | :33:55.
Indeed, it's like home soil. After the Olympics last year quite a lot | :33:56. | :33:59.
of people know how to come out and perform today. I think it showed | :34:00. | :34:05.
with Eilish and I both in the 5000. What does it mean to you to be part | :34:06. | :34:10.
of the team coming forward? I'm still happy, two weeks ago I didn't | :34:11. | :34:13.
think I would be racing at all, I still can't believe it, even this | :34:14. | :34:16.
morning I wasn't going to run. I'm so happy. Why was that? I ended up | :34:17. | :34:23.
pulling my hamstring, which is strange for a distance runner. I | :34:24. | :34:26.
ended up tearing it, they said, no chance. It's feeling better, I knew | :34:27. | :34:32.
in five days' time it would be fine. Today was a risk. I'm so happy to | :34:33. | :34:37.
come second. Over the moon. I knew there would be quick girls behind, | :34:38. | :34:42.
especially Jess, a new Steph would win it. But come top two. I thought | :34:43. | :34:48.
I was going to cry at the end, really happy. Great determination, | :34:49. | :34:49.
you've done it. The men's hammer, dominant | :34:50. | :35:01.
performance from the British record-holder Nick Miller. This was | :35:02. | :35:05.
his best throw of the afternoon. A third-round throw. Really got under | :35:06. | :35:13.
this. Just shy of 75 metres. 74.98 that will be measure that. Five of | :35:14. | :35:18.
his throws would have won the competition ahead of Taylor | :35:19. | :35:22.
Campbell. Nick Miller looking in good shape. A win is 74.9 eight. | :35:23. | :35:32.
There we are, the one and two. Steph Twell and Eilish McColgan in the | :35:33. | :35:42.
women's 5000 metres. This is the way it was one. A sprint finish from | :35:43. | :35:47.
Steph Twell broke Eilish McColgan. Struggling a little bit with her | :35:48. | :35:53.
hamstring. I'm sure she'll improve. For Steph Twell comprehensive | :35:54. | :35:57.
victory in the end. Good run from Charlotte Arter in third as well. | :35:58. | :36:04.
There are your one, two, three, four, five... Six. Indy 5000 metres. | :36:05. | :36:08.
Where have they come from, I've not seen them all day! Not one comes | :36:09. | :36:15.
along, but four. Didn't you see the EB just buzzing in? They'll be warm | :36:16. | :36:21.
those outfits. Gina has joined us. Great to see you. Great to see you | :36:22. | :36:29.
back running. -- Dina. For months I've been wanting to get back to | :36:30. | :36:32.
sprinting, it's always when you are away from something you realise, | :36:33. | :36:36.
this is what I want to do for the rest of my life, this is where I | :36:37. | :36:39.
should be. To be able to line up on the line, get on the line and two | :36:40. | :36:42.
blocks with the girls, run the race, it wasn't the best race for me but | :36:43. | :36:46.
at the same time I was happy to be there. We're waiting for the final | :36:47. | :36:51.
two events, the women's and men's 200 metre finals. Any other year we | :36:52. | :36:54.
would expect it out there but it would be too much this year, would | :36:55. | :37:01.
it? Coming back from injury? I was tempted initially but my coach | :37:02. | :37:06.
decided we are going to run a few hundreds because I need to focus on | :37:07. | :37:10.
execution, as lots of people saw yesterday. I need to focus on | :37:11. | :37:15.
getting out of the blocks. I love 200s, can't wait to get going round | :37:16. | :37:19.
the bend again. We have to wait a bit for that one. We're going back | :37:20. | :37:22.
to February when your injury happened. You knew it was a long, | :37:23. | :37:31.
hard road back to even think about getting a place. I remember getting | :37:32. | :37:37.
told, you've broken it, no stress fracture, you've broken it. I knew I | :37:38. | :37:42.
would have to have surgery immediately and before I could hope | :37:43. | :37:46.
to jog again, even think about putting on spikes, it would be at | :37:47. | :37:52.
least 34 months. I had a dissertation to do, had surgery, | :37:53. | :37:55.
then I was still under anaesthetic, thinking where is my head? I had to | :37:56. | :38:00.
type up a draft for uni. It has been a tense couple of months. There were | :38:01. | :38:04.
points where my coach had to be like, you have to push through this, | :38:05. | :38:08.
be confident, believe in yourself, really focus and realise, I want to | :38:09. | :38:11.
make that team, I want to be in London, wants to represent my | :38:12. | :38:16.
country at a home games. I'm so happy to be on TV, pain-free... | :38:17. | :38:21.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this race, it's a really | :38:22. | :38:25.
exciting women's 200 metres. You would expect Williams, Henry and | :38:26. | :38:29.
Hylton to be amongst the top Vickie. Pretty good, inside 23 seconds. It | :38:30. | :38:41.
was always going to be between these two. Putting on a bit of a show | :38:42. | :38:43.
here. Smoothly around that bend. Brilliant race, she's not almost | :38:44. | :38:55.
half a second off her best. -- she has knocked almost half a second. | :38:56. | :39:00.
The final of the women's 200 metres, this is how they line up. | :39:01. | :39:13.
Jodie Williams is probably tired of hearing what an exceptional junior | :39:14. | :39:20.
she was. The talent she had. For reasons mostly of injury, she hasn't | :39:21. | :39:23.
been able to quite live up to the early talent. 23.53 this season. | :39:24. | :39:31.
Kimberly Baptiste ran a personal best in the heats. 23.30 four. | :39:32. | :39:41.
Inside her, the quickest British woman this season over 200 metres, | :39:42. | :39:46.
Desiree Henry. Quickest over 100 as well. Still just 21, Desiree Henry. | :39:47. | :39:53.
She's been running at the highest level for a while. Beth Dobbin has a | :39:54. | :39:59.
good lane draw, produced a good personal best to win her heat. Might | :40:00. | :40:04.
struggle with athlete inside and outside. Bianca Williams is quickest | :40:05. | :40:09.
of the qualifiers, 22.80 nine. The only woman to go below 23 seconds in | :40:10. | :40:18.
the heats. Shannon Beljan, her twin sister produced a good run in the | :40:19. | :40:24.
final of the 400. And Shannon Hylton looked very impressive in the heats. | :40:25. | :40:32.
Louise Bloor. The most experienced athlete here, former Commonwealth | :40:33. | :40:35.
relay silver-medallist, former 100 in Glasgow for England. And Pipi. | :40:36. | :40:46.
Couldn't get back to Beth Dobbin in the heats, so finds herself in lane | :40:47. | :40:47.
one. In the absence of Dina Asher-Smith, | :40:48. | :40:59.
who is in the studio, in the absence of her at her best, quite an open | :41:00. | :41:04.
race. Desiree Henry will certainly fancy her chances of becoming the UK | :41:05. | :41:10.
champion here. Bianca Williams two lanes inside her. Will be a strong | :41:11. | :41:13.
challenge. So is Shannon Hylton. Clearly away, very good start from | :41:14. | :41:37.
Bianca Williams it inside Beth Dobbin. Desiree Henry in lane six. | :41:38. | :41:42.
Shannon Hylton out quickly over the first 150 minutes. Hylton leading | :41:43. | :41:48.
from Desiree Henry, Henry trying to respond. It's Hylton and Henry | :41:49. | :41:53.
competing. Through comes Bianca Williams but Hylton holds one. | :41:54. | :41:57.
22.964 Shannon Hylton to become the champion. Held of the best of the | :41:58. | :42:03.
rest. Desiree Henry and Bianca Williams finishing strongly but | :42:04. | :42:09.
Shannon Hylton takes the title. Just 20, and UK champion. A fraction | :42:10. | :42:13.
outside her personal best. The quickest time she's run this year. | :42:14. | :42:18.
That was the way to win the title. Went out strongly. And just, just | :42:19. | :42:24.
was able to hold off Henry and Bianca Williams coming through. It | :42:25. | :42:30.
was a great run by Shannon Hylton. The bend was majestic. She was | :42:31. | :42:36.
smooth, silky. She put her foot down just at the right time, which caused | :42:37. | :42:41.
pressure and tension in the shoulders of the women outside her. | :42:42. | :42:45.
Bianca Williams charge out of the block. Exactly the same way she did | :42:46. | :42:49.
in the semi. Look how patient Shannon Hylton is. She could see | :42:50. | :42:56.
Desiree Henry out in front. All she did is concentrate and focus on what | :42:57. | :43:00.
she needed to do. Her shoulders pumping really well but there is no | :43:01. | :43:04.
tension. She leans towards that take. A good victory. Bianca | :43:05. | :43:12.
Williams snuck in past Desiree Henry. To take second place. Have a | :43:13. | :43:17.
look from here how cool and calm Shannon is. No tension at all, is | :43:18. | :43:22.
there? Even though there is fatigue. She looks great. Just inside her, | :43:23. | :43:33.
Bianca Williams finishing strongly. The finish line came quickly enough | :43:34. | :43:39.
for Hylton. A very impressive run. Under 23 seconds. She has the | :43:40. | :43:43.
qualifying standard already, as Bianca Williams does her personal | :43:44. | :43:48.
best. It I personal best and a ticket to London. She is the UK | :43:49. | :43:50.
champion. She talking to Phil. We've been talking about what a | :43:51. | :43:57.
difficult year you had last year, so many injuries, to come back this | :43:58. | :44:01.
year in this form, to secure your place in the team, it has to be an | :44:02. | :44:05.
amazing feeling. Yeah, so many emotions when I crossed the line. It | :44:06. | :44:10.
was such hard work this year. I have to thank my parents, my team. And | :44:11. | :44:15.
the therapists who supported me. This year hasn't been the best. I'm | :44:16. | :44:20.
just so happy. I can't believe I'm going to London. Honestly. Looking | :44:21. | :44:26.
across all the likely candidates for a place on the team there are so | :44:27. | :44:29.
many nowadays in Britain. To get your place on the team is a great | :44:30. | :44:32.
feat. What do you think you can possibly achieve at that world | :44:33. | :44:39.
stage? London is an amazing stadium. I'll be amongst so many top | :44:40. | :44:43.
athletes, hopefully they can push me to more personal bests. I'm just so | :44:44. | :44:49.
happy. I know it's an emotional moment but enjoy, you deserve it. | :44:50. | :44:50.
Thank you so much, thank you. There was emotion down there with | :44:51. | :44:59.
Phil from Shannon Hylton and emotion in the studio, because Dina | :45:00. | :45:01.
Asher-Smith you have known each other since you were knee-high to a | :45:02. | :45:06.
grasshopper. I am so happy, Shannon is... I'm going to get emotional... | :45:07. | :45:11.
She is so talented. She is talented isn't she, and focused. A bit like | :45:12. | :45:16.
yourself. These girls, actually, Dina, these girls cite somebody like | :45:17. | :45:20.
you to see how you transition from the Europe junior age group, to | :45:21. | :45:24.
dealing with pressure like this. I'm sure you've been a lot of | :45:25. | :45:28.
inspiration to her. Maybe, but I'm so unbelievably happy for Shannon, | :45:29. | :45:32.
she's had such a year full of injuries. Where you just think, | :45:33. | :45:36.
without that you could have done so well. And now she's going to London | :45:37. | :45:38.
so I'm... So happy. Such talent out there as well, with | :45:39. | :45:47.
the likes of Henry and Bianca Williams as well. We had women on | :45:48. | :45:53.
the start line, four of whom have the time already, and it is the same | :45:54. | :46:01.
with the men's. 2014 was great for British sprinting and it got better | :46:02. | :46:04.
and better. Junior athletes making the transition is a positive thing. | :46:05. | :46:10.
The men's race will be equally mouthwatering. We should say that | :46:11. | :46:15.
the men's race as well, if you think there is emotional right now, you | :46:16. | :46:20.
have a vested interest. My boyfriend is running. And your boyfriend is? | :46:21. | :46:33.
Zharnel. Come on, laid down! They all used through, the four we | :46:34. | :46:38.
expected. Fair to say that maybe Hughes and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake | :46:39. | :46:42.
more used to it than the others, but Zharnel Hughes in particular. I | :46:43. | :46:47.
think he would agree, Denise, that he was using at the earliest and | :46:48. | :46:54.
looked more relaxed. Is bent in the transition was smooth. It's a matter | :46:55. | :46:58.
of putting body and mind into one and making sure he delivers, and he | :46:59. | :47:03.
can, he is talented. Definitely. He's going to be amazing. There he | :47:04. | :47:10.
is! Just unbridled enthusiasm there and adoration. Let's get down to our | :47:11. | :47:16.
commentary team, and they can talk you through the line-up. | :47:17. | :47:31.
Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake looks good, strong and comfortable as ever. | :47:32. | :47:37.
Danny Talbot so good around the bend, easing his way around. Adam | :47:38. | :47:42.
Gemili is already looking for the line, and he gets it. | :47:43. | :47:47.
Well, two of the main contenders, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Zharnel | :47:48. | :47:54.
Hughes, and just to conceptualise the race, these men who have | :47:55. | :48:00.
qualified, the top four K, but at least three of them, you add Adam | :48:01. | :48:05.
Gemili, three of the fastest four ever men at the British 200 metres. | :48:06. | :48:11.
Only John Regis has ever run quicker. To have three of the top | :48:12. | :48:16.
four ever contended for 18, with Danny Talbot, it shows you the | :48:17. | :48:22.
strength and depth we have. What a great race we have in prospect. | :48:23. | :48:27.
Let's do it lane by lane. Great run from Leon Reid in the heats, and he | :48:28. | :48:31.
deserves his place. A new personal best, 20.59. A super run from him to | :48:32. | :48:39.
get into the final. Inside him, young Sam Miller. He had a great | :48:40. | :48:47.
European teams wiki and -- weekend. Williams had to pull out injured. | :48:48. | :48:52.
Sam wouldn't have thanked him for that, at great experience from Adam | :48:53. | :48:57.
Gemili. The big questions are against Adam Gemili. You didn't win | :48:58. | :49:01.
the 100 metres. He now has to find something here he hasn't quite had | :49:02. | :49:08.
yet this G8 against Danny Talbot, and beat him elsewhere. Danny Talbot | :49:09. | :49:14.
is in great form, the form of his life. Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, he | :49:15. | :49:21.
races in the states, performed brilliantly in the US, he did well | :49:22. | :49:28.
in one run for Great Britain at the Olympic Games last year. Zharnel | :49:29. | :49:33.
Hughes, a great talent. He is yet to break 19 seconds. Nethaneel | :49:34. | :49:36.
Mitchell-Blake has already done that. Zharnel Hughes have a lane | :49:37. | :49:42.
which allows him to look at the others, lane three. We have a | :49:43. | :49:48.
nonstarter in lane two, Toby Harries, who ran a personal best to | :49:49. | :49:53.
get through. And Roy Ejiakuekwu pushed Adam Gemili. He was in lane | :49:54. | :49:59.
six, a better lane and he has for the final. -- than he has. I am sure | :50:00. | :50:09.
that the other guys will understand the way that we are concentrating on | :50:10. | :50:14.
these middle lanes, Hughes, Mitchell-Blake, Tolbert and Gemili. | :50:15. | :50:21.
All have a qualifying time but only two are guaranteed selection. Will | :50:22. | :50:26.
it be the top three who take all three spots? The men's 200 metres | :50:27. | :50:35.
final. And the way they go. It's a pretty even break from all of them. | :50:36. | :50:41.
Gemili got out quickly, but Talbot running a good friend. Adam Gemili | :50:42. | :50:51.
being led by the other three. On the line, perhaps it's going to be | :50:52. | :50:55.
Mitchell-Blake. Leon Reid finishing like a train for third. 20.2. The | :50:56. | :51:01.
winning time. Mitchell-Blake is the champion. Danny Talbot joins him in | :51:02. | :51:10.
the team. Dominant from the two of them. Zharnel Hughes fell apart in | :51:11. | :51:18.
the last 30, 40 metres. I don't know if he is OK. Leon Reid finished like | :51:19. | :51:24.
a train, and just struggling. He is grabbing his lap. He didn't look | :51:25. | :51:29.
good in the heats. -- grabbing his leg. That is sad for Gemili. Well, | :51:30. | :51:39.
Colin, we said it would be about two from four to get in the team, but | :51:40. | :51:45.
two of them fell apart, and Mitchell-Blake held it together. | :51:46. | :51:51.
Danny Talbot makes a great race. We think we know what happened to | :51:52. | :51:56.
Gemili. Incredible race, Steve, and I'm glancing at the board to look at | :51:57. | :52:04.
the results. A new championship record for Mitchell-Blake. New | :52:05. | :52:06.
personal best for Danny Talbot. And a new personal best for Leon Reid. A | :52:07. | :52:14.
great 200 -- great 200 metre running. Good conditions. Leon Reid | :52:15. | :52:20.
has now run the qualifying time in third spot. Who'd want to be a | :52:21. | :52:28.
selector? Not us! We are sitting here, enjoying this type of | :52:29. | :52:30.
competition. Adam Gemili committed himself. He knew he had a bit of a | :52:31. | :52:36.
problem and had to commit himself around the bend, and that's what he | :52:37. | :52:40.
did, but Danny Talbot stamped on him early in that bend, putting himself | :52:41. | :52:45.
in a great position to fly off. Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake on the | :52:46. | :52:48.
inside wasn't going to give up. He worked hard. Look at these athletes | :52:49. | :52:56.
dipping into look at Leon Reid. -- dipping in. And look at Leon Reid. | :52:57. | :53:02.
All the talented athlete inside him, but he kept focus and worked hard. I | :53:03. | :53:08.
think Zharnel will be a bit frustrated, but he'll come good | :53:09. | :53:12.
again later on. Like you said, Steve, who would be a selector? Wow! | :53:13. | :53:18.
At least those two, you can guarantee they are on. Thereafter | :53:19. | :53:23.
winners, Leon Reid with a great run as well, but the winners are going | :53:24. | :53:30.
to the World Championships. It's great to see not only the two guys | :53:31. | :53:34.
going through but also to celebrate it with your family. They are up | :53:35. | :53:40.
there, my dad, my two sisters, my cousins. There is a lot of love. I | :53:41. | :53:44.
love it. Congratulations, secured your place. What pressure and make | :53:45. | :53:49.
it through, you don't with it so well. I prepared for it all season. | :53:50. | :53:54.
I'm based in the states. My coach and I made a conscious effort to | :53:55. | :53:59.
ensure that, come the latter part, the priority was to come and get the | :54:00. | :54:03.
job done. Danny, a personal best today when you needed it. It was | :54:04. | :54:08.
only, as Steve was saying in commentary, four of you and four | :54:09. | :54:13.
into three doesn't go. It more than just four. Leon Reid is at my club | :54:14. | :54:19.
as well, a personal best to comfort. It's a competitive event. I'm glad I | :54:20. | :54:25.
secured my place. A personal best to come third. | :54:26. | :54:34.
Zharnel Hughes, watching him, really the last 20 metres, but what about | :54:35. | :54:40.
Leon Reid. He ran for Northern Ireland in the Commonwealth Games. | :54:41. | :54:45.
He will be heading there for Northern Ireland, I presume, but | :54:46. | :54:48.
will he go for Great Britain in the World Championships? A personal best | :54:49. | :54:54.
and equality in time. Those two technically go. -- a qualifying | :54:55. | :54:59.
time. Gemili grabbing his leg when he finished. Questions for them. | :55:00. | :55:05.
Adam Tolbert deserves his place, and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake has come | :55:06. | :55:08.
home this time and performed superbly well. -- Adam Talbot. I'm | :55:09. | :55:19.
thinking that perhaps Leon Reid should go minimum in the relay, part | :55:20. | :55:22.
of that squad. He has shown that he can run. ... I think he is coached | :55:23. | :55:28.
by James Hillier as well. He's had a good weekend. A championship record. | :55:29. | :55:37.
Look how fast that is, 20.18 four Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, and a real | :55:38. | :55:40.
scrap with Danny Talbot. Great running from him. What about Leon | :55:41. | :55:46.
Reid, 20.30 eight. That's a qualifying time. Zharnel Hughes just | :55:47. | :55:52.
behind in fourth. Sadly, not a good weekend for Adam Gemili, and I guess | :55:53. | :55:56.
you'll have to sit down with his coach and maybe the British | :55:57. | :55:59.
selectors, telling them where he's at. Sixth place for Adam Gemili. | :56:00. | :56:07.
Thank you. A cracking end to the day in Birmingham, and just time to give | :56:08. | :56:15.
you a little pointer to where you can find more sport. If you are a | :56:16. | :56:18.
fan of tennis, it's a big couple of weeks for you, and in about 20 | :56:19. | :56:25.
minutes on BBC One, a special Sue Barker documentary, where she meets | :56:26. | :56:27.
tennis legends from all over the globe. Tomorrow is the start from | :56:28. | :56:33.
Wimbledon, coverage from FW 19 from 11:30am. Loads more athletics as | :56:34. | :56:38.
well, I'm a cache highlights of the Diamond League next weekend, and | :56:39. | :56:43.
then we go to the anniversary games on Sunday. | :56:44. | :56:50.
Just a little time to digests and taking what we've seen. Thoughts, | :56:51. | :56:56.
Denny 's, in terms of the runners and riders and those who have | :56:57. | :57:00.
qualified. A few surprises, but generally a great day for middle | :57:01. | :57:05.
distance running. I enjoyed watching the 800 metres. Some great battles. | :57:06. | :57:09.
That's what we want to see. Great surprises, young Leon Reid in the | :57:10. | :57:16.
200. This is what athletics has been about. It's been a decent | :57:17. | :57:21.
championships. Wood some good strength in -- some good strength | :57:22. | :57:27.
and depth. Some good solid performances from the old strong | :57:28. | :57:29.
ones, like Stephanie Twell, but O'Hare. They are not really old! But | :57:30. | :57:34.
just compared to the young ones. And then to see Jessica Judd coming back | :57:35. | :57:40.
from the turmoil of the last couple of years is really good for her. To | :57:41. | :57:44.
see Elliot Giles rake through and win the men's 800 metres. And | :57:45. | :57:49.
Matthew Hudson-Smith. A great, strong run for him. Shannon Hylton, | :57:50. | :57:58.
a fantastic run in the 200. Morgan Lake yesterday as well, of course. | :57:59. | :58:01.
It has been a two-day meet in Birmingham. These British trials, | :58:02. | :58:08.
British championships, but it's all about the World Athletics | :58:09. | :58:10.
Championships. They start in just over a month in London. We will be | :58:11. | :58:15.
there and I hope that you will, too. Good night. | :58:16. | :58:27.
It's a new British record! It's a mammoth job. A stunning performance. | :58:28. | :58:40.
Sophie Gibson, what benefit. It's huge! The world title! Beautiful | :58:41. | :58:56.
job. Laura Beal -- Laura Muir has smashed the British record. | :58:57. | :58:59. |
