Good afternoon, welcome to live coverage on the final day of the

:00:56.:01:03.

World Athletics Championships 2017. Hold the tears. If you weren't

:01:04.:01:07.

watching last night, where were you? Prim adult -- three medals added to

:01:08.:01:21.

the Great British and Irish tally. Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe are

:01:22.:01:24.

with me. It was a different kind of Super Saturday to five years ago but

:01:25.:01:30.

it was spectacular, wasn't it? Sometimes you think Super Saturday

:01:31.:01:34.

must have been brilliant and in your memory you still have a vision of

:01:35.:01:39.

it, but last night I don't know, certainly in the 4x100 relay I'm

:01:40.:01:43.

trying to commentate against this noise sometimes and it was

:01:44.:01:48.

incredible. Great night, great atmosphere. It's just the drama.

:01:49.:01:52.

These World Championships keep giving. Paula, we have four new

:01:53.:02:00.

superstars now, career defining moment for these guys and everybody

:02:01.:02:04.

here wanted to make sure they remembered this moment. I understand

:02:05.:02:08.

it was very difficult to get out because everybody wanted to absorb

:02:09.:02:12.

that moment. Yes, everybody wanted to celebrate and it's been a long

:02:13.:02:17.

time coming. We have talked a lot at this Championships about the next

:02:18.:02:21.

generation coming through, who are going to look to next. We very much

:02:22.:02:26.

know now where that generation will come. We talked about Eilidh Doyle's

:02:27.:02:32.

motivation speech that she gave to the British team as team captain and

:02:33.:02:37.

she said don't leave the hashtag out there, more to come, because I want

:02:38.:02:43.

it all out on the track. Steve, you were talking this race, as the girls

:02:44.:02:48.

celebrated with their team-mates. They were doing the same as us. Each

:02:49.:02:54.

changeover they got excited, then it went quiet, the next changeover,

:02:55.:02:59.

then Daryl was the only smart one, she was looking at the big screen to

:03:00.:03:06.

see who could get to the line first. Great celebrations. This is the one

:03:07.:03:11.

true bit of team in athletics, the relay. Talk about the British team

:03:12.:03:20.

and Eilidh 's team talk is aimed at everyone individually but this

:03:21.:03:23.

result is a systemic approach to producing a medal which is why we

:03:24.:03:28.

won and the Americans don't. The Americans made a change from the

:03:29.:03:32.

morning to the afternoon, they threw Baker on the top leg. They go who is

:03:33.:03:39.

running fastest, let's put four out there. It is a proper drilled team.

:03:40.:03:46.

The girls and guys work together and win together. I think one of them

:03:47.:03:49.

said we win together we lose together and it was a great example

:03:50.:03:55.

of that lost lives. For me I know sometimes people get mealy-mouthed

:03:56.:03:58.

about relays but they are part of athletics just as much as triple

:03:59.:04:04.

jump or,, or the walks we will see today and it's how you approach that

:04:05.:04:09.

event and we take it seriously. It's not just a nice little add-on at the

:04:10.:04:15.

end. Last night just shows we are good at it. Absolutely, incredible

:04:16.:04:22.

synergy and the women with their brilliant silver. We will have time

:04:23.:04:26.

to talk about that, and all of what happened last night in about an

:04:27.:04:30.

hour's time but we are going to focus on the walks first. The 15km

:04:31.:04:35.

walks for the men and women have already taken place. Here's what

:04:36.:04:37.

happened earlier. The men's was won by Francis Johann of France.

:04:38.:05:05.

Yes, he didn't have a great Olympics last year, he was injured just

:05:06.:05:10.

before it. I don't think he even finished in Rio and it's taken a lot

:05:11.:05:12.

of this year to get himself back together so to take their medal

:05:13.:05:21.

tally to three, they are justifiably proud of that. In the women's race,

:05:22.:05:37.

Ines Enriquez of Portugal. This was another one winning it for Portugal

:05:38.:05:45.

in four hours, five minutes and 56 seconds. Ireland's Robert Heffernan

:05:46.:05:54.

finished in eighth place. Great Britain have a team of five race

:05:55.:05:57.

walkers, Tom Bosworth is the big-name running in the 20km walk.

:05:58.:06:06.

Walking. If he's running he gets disqualified. The whole is getting

:06:07.:06:12.

bigger, let's concentrate on the walking. Chances today? I think

:06:13.:06:18.

realistically Tom has a top aide charms. He knows the Chinese walkers

:06:19.:06:22.

in particular will take it out really fast. I think he was hoping

:06:23.:06:26.

the weather conditions we might see something like Wednesday when it

:06:27.:06:28.

rained all day because he is technically very strong and his

:06:29.:06:31.

technique stays together when he gets tired but he maybe doesn't have

:06:32.:06:37.

the pace we would love him to. He has a chance, a good chance. With

:06:38.:06:44.

the London crowd. I was just going to make that point. If you are in

:06:45.:06:50.

London today, go and cheer Tom on, and Callum as well. Silly things

:06:51.:06:59.

have happened. On paper he should come ninth or tenth, something like

:07:00.:07:04.

that, but disqualifications, the occasion, who knows. If you have

:07:05.:07:08.

plans already to go outside, by all means watch the race live, if you

:07:09.:07:12.

were planning on staying in and watching the race with us, stay

:07:13.:07:17.

where you are. Let's talk about the women's 20km race because it's

:07:18.:07:23.

already under way. They will walk a two kilometre race in all. Britain

:07:24.:07:35.

have Gemma Bridge and Beth and Davis going in this one. The leaders are

:07:36.:07:40.

just past ten kilometres and were going to the centre of London live

:07:41.:07:45.

with your commentator. COMMENTATOR: Actually they are

:07:46.:08:42.

walking a very consistent pace at the moment and that may be obvious.

:08:43.:08:48.

The last two kilometre splits... Let's pause at the moment to check

:08:49.:08:52.

the ten kilometre times. That is the leading group going through, and

:08:53.:08:58.

these are the gaps after that to the chases. Most of those women were

:08:59.:09:05.

prominent in the leading group of 20 for the first five kilometres or so.

:09:06.:09:13.

Then we go into one down. In other words 45 minutes plus. Just looking

:09:14.:09:24.

at the pace, the two kilometre lap times, the last three, coming up to

:09:25.:09:30.

six kilometre it was a .46, coming up to eight kilometres it was 8.41,

:09:31.:09:40.

then at ten kilometres 8.42, so pretty pace. One expects that in

:09:41.:09:44.

race walking because by the very nature of the event you're not going

:09:45.:09:47.

to get the dramatic changes of acceleration you can get of course

:09:48.:09:56.

running. On the right, really struggling to keep going on the back

:09:57.:10:00.

of this leading group. So important to stay with the group.

:10:01.:10:17.

They pretty much remain in almost the same order, not only the group

:10:18.:10:26.

of ten but almost unchanged with the Chinese just behind them. The gap is

:10:27.:10:31.

beginning to open up maybe. It's just beginning to break away,

:10:32.:10:48.

maybe. We are down to eight, let's see if those of the two can keep

:10:49.:11:08.

going. It just looks as if Palmisano is pushing the pace on a bit. They

:11:09.:11:20.

are paying the price. Palmisano has been a very consistent walk a time.

:11:21.:11:27.

She is 33 years of age, eighth, eighth and sixth at three Olympic

:11:28.:11:32.

Games bears testimony to that consistency. This year 's World

:11:33.:11:43.

Championships, she has been sixth, eighth and fourth in the last three

:11:44.:11:49.

editions, amazing consistency. She is there at the back of the park at

:11:50.:11:50.

the moment, tenth place. Murder are the racewalking

:11:51.:12:10.

enthusiasts or tourists looking on. Others wandering on must wonder what

:12:11.:12:15.

they found. It's all about racewalking today. We started with

:12:16.:12:20.

the men's 50 kilometres, we now have the women's 20 kilometres and we

:12:21.:12:24.

will lead onto the men's 20km walk which is due to start at 2:20pm, and

:12:25.:12:30.

it is now, what, just quarter past one here in Britain. And we are down

:12:31.:12:46.

to the leading group of eight. A group of ten who were together for

:12:47.:12:51.

so much of this race, just beginning to split. And a warning.

:12:52.:13:10.

The first five kilometres there was a group of 20, then for much of the

:13:11.:13:17.

race we have seen a group of ten, slowly whittling down. They might be

:13:18.:13:28.

down to six in the moment. Wang just struggling there. So it is Palmisano

:13:29.:13:40.

and Gonzales as has been throughout the race, then Lyu and Wang behind

:13:41.:13:57.

them, De Sena, the Brazilian. We may see some athletes coming through

:13:58.:14:02.

from behind, trying to track these down. Perez of Spain the leader of

:14:03.:14:04.

that trio. 11 kilometres reached in 48.30.

:14:05.:14:28.

Slightly quicker than for the previous one. Palmisano in the blue.

:14:29.:14:38.

Gonzalez in the green and red. Always prominent, never shown at the

:14:39.:15:02.

forefront of the picture, Arenas the Colombian, 23 years of age, steadily

:15:03.:15:08.

making her way up in the rankings. She was 22nd in 2013, 19th in 2015,

:15:09.:15:13.

has every chance of being higher this time.

:15:14.:15:32.

The war of attrition is continuing. Six of them now at the forefront.

:15:33.:15:49.

Behind the two Chinese and the two who led throughout, De Sena

:15:50.:16:01.

Palmisano. Taking advantage of the shade.

:16:02.:16:11.

The Queen I -- the eye of the judges in the centre. They pass 12

:16:12.:16:28.

kilometres. That is the fastest of the race.

:16:29.:16:42.

That is for the leaders. There is a clear gap between them. It is

:16:43.:16:53.

amazing how quickly the gaps can open up. Still a long way to go.

:16:54.:17:03.

Still to see whether they will make a decisive move or whether they will

:17:04.:17:09.

continue this war of attrition. These are the favourites coming into

:17:10.:17:11.

this race. Wang has those warnings and has

:17:12.:17:38.

dropped back a little bit. A study of the Italian, who has been in the

:17:39.:17:42.

lead since just about the whole race, Palmisano. Can she get on the

:17:43.:17:48.

rostrum? Still taking on the water. Keeping

:17:49.:18:15.

hydrated. Chinese sharing it between them.

:18:16.:18:30.

Just one disqualification that we've seen so far. They are on two

:18:31.:18:39.

warnings. Kovacs has got two warnings. Of the

:18:40.:18:57.

leaders, just one red showing and that is Lyu. Gonzalez is concerned

:18:58.:19:24.

that she is doing very well indeed. Palmisano next to her. Davies is

:19:25.:19:30.

doing really well, the leading British athlete. Went through ten K.

:19:31.:19:41.

She is really out on her own. It doesn't help but she is

:19:42.:19:48.

concentrating on what she is doing. Davies and Gemma Bridge are the

:19:49.:19:53.

British athletes. The Chinese are all pretty young.

:19:54.:20:54.

Lyu, 23-year-old, has those medals. We have another youngster of 23.

:20:55.:21:04.

Palmisano is 26. Quite a young contingent in this leading pack.

:21:05.:21:16.

Arsena is very much the oldest at 32. She was seventh in the Olympic

:21:17.:21:20.

Games last year. Partner of one of the leading

:21:21.:21:31.

protagonists of the 50 K walk. One hour into the race and we have a

:21:32.:22:13.

pack of six walkers. Palmisano, two Chinese athletes, Arsena of Brazil.

:22:14.:22:23.

That is the leading pack. One hour into a race that will take less than

:22:24.:22:25.

90 minutes. The speed has indeed increased.

:22:26.:23:14.

Those leaders gradually increasing the temple all the time.

:23:15.:23:28.

Well, Yang has moved to the front. Is it significant or is it a brief

:23:29.:23:40.

moment? Gonzalez is closing the gap, as is the favourite. But we do seem

:23:41.:23:46.

to have another one falling off the back. The Colombian suddenly finds

:23:47.:23:54.

herself six or seven metres down so maybe we are down to five. That

:23:55.:24:02.

little bursts. Now there is a tough battle to see if they can close that

:24:03.:24:09.

gap. On her own in seventh place. We saw her struggling to hold on to the

:24:10.:24:13.

back but now she has gone ahead. She is fighting gap and has

:24:14.:24:31.

recaptured the top group. First sign of weakness.

:24:32.:24:49.

Arenas is just behind. Unlike in the men's race, we have not seen any of

:24:50.:25:02.

this. Just taking a cheque to the backmarkers. We have still got the

:25:03.:25:09.

Kazakhstan racers at the back of the field.

:25:10.:25:29.

Quaker gap back -- quite a gap back. Great tradition of walking in

:25:30.:25:45.

Russia, which has been blighted by the doping scandals.

:25:46.:25:54.

She battled hard. The youngster. She is our third disqualification. She

:25:55.:26:05.

fought so hard but has had to yield. We've lost her. In seventh place at

:26:06.:26:24.

the time. Yang showing prominently again. At the back of the group,

:26:25.:26:32.

those two. One hour in five minutes into the

:26:33.:26:54.

race. A little over 20 minutes until we come to the conclusion.

:26:55.:27:42.

There is a gap ever opening. Walking in sixth place here. See how far

:27:43.:28:49.

back she is from those top five. Passing through the 15 K point. The

:28:50.:29:06.

tenth and 11th, the two Spaniards have gone through. That is a minute

:29:07.:29:13.

and a half from the leaders. They are followed.

:29:14.:29:48.

Borovska has been disqualified. We are whittling the field down from 60

:29:49.:29:52.

competitors with some disqualifications. Up and down this

:29:53.:30:09.

to kilometre course on the Mall. The judges keeping a close check on what

:30:10.:30:13.

is happening. In some ways it is a pity that the walkers no longer go

:30:14.:30:20.

on a route through a major city is used see in the championships. On

:30:21.:30:26.

the other hand this is very friendly for spectators and it provides every

:30:27.:30:31.

opportunity for the judges to keep a close track on the competitors.

:30:32.:30:40.

There is some mapping going on now. -- lapping. Less than 20 minutes to

:30:41.:30:55.

go before the conclusion of this race. At the moment one would say

:30:56.:31:00.

the medallists look to be between this group of five. There is Arenas

:31:01.:31:12.

now, a lonely sixth. Other women still going through that 15km point,

:31:13.:31:22.

we have just seen the American going through in 20 Eighth Place, and

:31:23.:31:25.

Bethan Davies has just passed that point as well.

:31:26.:31:47.

Lyu going across to collect a drink, while the others did not at that

:31:48.:31:53.

station. Then going back to rejoin them. Gonzalez, the Olympic

:31:54.:32:06.

silver-medallist, leads. Lyu, the Olympic bronze-medallist. Palmisano,

:32:07.:32:24.

fourth in the Olympics. The newcomer, Yang of China. We have

:32:25.:32:38.

most of the leading protagonists from the last couple of years of

:32:39.:32:50.

women's racewalking. Here is Perez, and Madarasz of Hungary moving up

:32:51.:32:55.

the field nicely. This is Borovska of the view -- the

:32:56.:33:17.

Ukraine, who was in a prominent place. It is sad. Most events on the

:33:18.:33:22.

track and field programme you can complete and if it doesn't go well

:33:23.:33:29.

for you you can still compete, but not so in this. The Kazakhstan

:33:30.:33:35.

athletes have been at the back of the park nearly all the way. Repina

:33:36.:33:48.

was in 50 Sixth Place. The leaders are doing the laps now in little

:33:49.:33:50.

over eight minutes. For most of the way it has been

:33:51.:34:15.

Palmisano and Gonzalez side-by-side. Flanked by the Chinese athletes in

:34:16.:34:17.

the red vests. China with a great record of course

:34:18.:34:47.

in the women's racewalking. In the history of the World Championships

:34:48.:34:52.

they have had three gold-medallists, three silver, two bronze and in

:34:53.:35:03.

Beijing two years ago we had Lyu Hong winning. She also won back in

:35:04.:35:13.

2011, and if we go further back it was Lyu Hong Hu, similar name but

:35:14.:35:21.

different athlete. They must be glad we don't have the searing

:35:22.:35:26.

temperatures they experienced in Seville. The championship record

:35:27.:35:42.

goes way back to 2005, Ivanova in Helsinki. Helsinki had some notable

:35:43.:35:51.

rain at some stages, a torrential rainstorm caused a delay for a

:35:52.:35:55.

couple of hours in the Olympic Stadium, and they had to retreat to

:35:56.:36:03.

the back of the stance. That day, we came back again and the rain didn't

:36:04.:36:14.

last as long as it did. Last week we had persistent rain throughout the

:36:15.:36:23.

day. Now then, is Palmisano beginning to drop back? We may be

:36:24.:36:28.

down to three, the two Chinese and Gonzalez but I wouldn't write off

:36:29.:36:38.

Palmisano yet. It looks for the moment as if the leading trio are

:36:39.:36:42.

trying to get away, that's hard to sign the others struggling harder.

:36:43.:36:52.

There is the disqualified athletes. There's two raids against the

:36:53.:37:02.

Australian, Hungarian, and then these are the athletes with one,

:37:03.:37:07.

which does include one of our leaders, Wang. Gemma Bridge also has

:37:08.:37:22.

one red against her name. So too does Repina, who we just saw lapped.

:37:23.:37:27.

A little over ten minutes to go and we have a group of five. This is a

:37:28.:37:35.

very different story, the men's 50 kilometres walk was won by the

:37:36.:37:44.

Frenchman excelling with the fastest time ever recorded, three hours 33

:37:45.:37:53.

minutes. Very different story in this race

:37:54.:38:11.

where the women are closely bunched. The gaps are definitely down and we

:38:12.:38:15.

may be down to three to fight the medals. We will see. Palmisano,

:38:16.:38:22.

narrowing the gap quickly, but it does look as if the Brazilian, De

:38:23.:38:39.

Sena is falling back and will be fighting hard to get back. The

:38:40.:38:53.

favourite, Lyu, tucks in behind her compatriot. The question is can De

:38:54.:39:04.

Sena get back again? They have passed through 16, 17 kilometres

:39:05.:39:14.

now, reached in 1:14:03. We are going to get some good times from

:39:15.:39:21.

these leaders. Enjoying, I hope, as best you can when you are exerting

:39:22.:39:25.

yourself as much as that in these conditions in London. Here they

:39:26.:39:40.

come, to pass some more lapped walkers. Wang, having a look at her

:39:41.:39:58.

watch. The last kilometre in 4.12. Gradually increasing all the time.

:39:59.:40:05.

Gonzalez and Palmisano, so prominent in the early stages of this race.

:40:06.:40:10.

Rejoined after taking the water on board by the Chinese athletes, Lyu

:40:11.:40:21.

and Wang. Palmisano definitely struggling again.

:40:22.:40:52.

Now then, Palmisano seems to be struggling once again. We have

:40:53.:41:04.

noticed this for the last or two. It looks like it might be between the

:41:05.:41:07.

two Chinese athletes and the Mexican. Palmisano is nothing if not

:41:08.:41:18.

a fighter, she is determined to get it back but the gap is opening up

:41:19.:41:22.

every stride it seems at the moment. And it is Gonzalez and Lyu and Wang.

:41:23.:41:32.

Palmisano on the right there. The picture shortens the gap of course.

:41:33.:41:43.

De Sena and Arenas dropped off the leading group. Palmisano something

:41:44.:41:58.

like 12 metres now, and it is Wang pushing on. Round they go past

:41:59.:41:59.

Buckingham Palace. About 1.27, I think, a shade

:42:00.:42:36.

quicker. Going past the Australian there. There is Palmisano, but it is

:42:37.:42:51.

the trio, it is the Chinese athletes, Yang and Lyu, together

:42:52.:43:11.

with Gonzalez of Mexico. Yang, Down the youngest of the Chinese

:43:12.:43:12.

athletes. Gonzalez still taking on water in

:43:13.:43:34.

these last minutes of the race. The Chinese seeking to add to their

:43:35.:43:39.

medal haul. It's been a good day for the Far East already with two medals

:43:40.:43:48.

going to Japan in the men's race. Gonzalez hoping to uphold the

:43:49.:43:52.

tradition of Mexican walking, mostly retained by the men in the past.

:43:53.:44:00.

Indeed they have not won a medal in the women's race, their highest

:44:01.:44:09.

place being sixth before. So can it be Mexico's first medal? It looks

:44:10.:44:15.

set to be, certainly, their first gold. The Chinese have always been

:44:16.:44:19.

prepared to hang slightly back off the leaders. That was Palmisano and

:44:20.:44:31.

Gonzalez for much of the race. There is Claire Tallent. Gonzalez still

:44:32.:44:43.

wearing that agonised expression. Lee, on the left, lapped. Focusing

:44:44.:44:51.

on keeping their walking gait, keeping away from the judges'

:44:52.:45:00.

displeasure. Maintaining this increased tempo towards the closing

:45:01.:45:08.

stages. They are not far away now. There's three absolutely locked

:45:09.:45:10.

together, this will be one of the closest finishes in history. It was

:45:11.:45:20.

close of course in Beijing when both finished with the same time.

:45:21.:45:26.

It looks like Lyu is in serious trouble. There are three red against

:45:27.:45:44.

her. She does not know it yet. There are three red is for lost contact

:45:45.:45:54.

showing on our screen. Palmisano has one card. Gonzalez touching the

:45:55.:46:02.

barrier. This could be one of those occasions when an athlete crosses

:46:03.:46:11.

the line and learns of their disqualification after. Here they

:46:12.:46:19.

come round the bend. Past Buckingham Palace again. Pushing on hard. Lyu

:46:20.:46:23.

might not know that she's serious trouble. This could be the moment.

:46:24.:46:38.

Coming into the closing stages, we could have a fascinating, epic

:46:39.:46:52.

finish. Lyu on the right but with three red is against her name. The

:46:53.:47:00.

Mexican trying to keep pace with the Chinese, it does not look like she

:47:01.:47:06.

can. There could be a change in those positions. Palmisano may not

:47:07.:47:16.

know it but could yet be in line for a medal. Yang going clear. Could

:47:17.:47:30.

well be on her way to gold. Coming into the finishing straight. Fine

:47:31.:47:46.

finish. Yang it is. Lyu has been stopped. We knew it. The gold goes

:47:47.:47:54.

to Yang. And insight of the finish, after

:47:55.:48:10.

Gonzales, Lyu has been stopped. It was a very fast time. Yang can

:48:11.:48:23.

celebrate for China but it was a tragic end for her compatriot Lyu.

:48:24.:48:32.

Coming in in fourth is the Brazilian, De Sena. Gonzalez is so

:48:33.:48:54.

prominent throughout. Has achieved a medal for Mexico. The first woman to

:48:55.:49:10.

win one for Mexico in walking Championship history. There is the

:49:11.:49:26.

finish of the 20 K walk. Takes the gold fractionally ahead of the

:49:27.:49:37.

Mexican, Gonzalez, and there are the medallists joining in with that

:49:38.:49:48.

dramatic disqualification. Early on in this race we have a pack of 20.

:49:49.:49:58.

After it was down to ten. Gradually whittled down. Yang it was with a

:49:59.:50:09.

little burst fairly early on, pushed on to achieve a very narrow victory.

:50:10.:50:18.

A great day for Portugal. Finishing in sixth place. She will have been

:50:19.:50:28.

delighted that her compatriot won in a world record time.

:50:29.:50:46.

Garcia of Peru finishing in seventh place.

:50:47.:51:08.

Wang Na crossing the line next. Then we have Perez, so that is two

:51:09.:51:24.

Spaniards in the top ten. Just inside the 90 minute standard for

:51:25.:51:27.

the woman. So, congratulations to China's Yang.

:51:28.:52:08.

But a bit of late drama for the British fans. Didn't see that coming

:52:09.:52:19.

from Lyu. She did not see it either! She did but she was trying to

:52:20.:52:23.

pretend. One that sticks in my mind was Jean Southall, when she was

:52:24.:52:27.

leading the Olympic race in Sydney and was disqualified in front of a

:52:28.:52:36.

packed stadium, inside the stadium. It is something that they've got to

:52:37.:52:42.

factor in. They've got to get their heads around the fact that not only

:52:43.:52:46.

can injury destroyer race, you can be disqualified because the more

:52:47.:52:52.

tired you get, you cannot hold your form. She will have seen that she

:52:53.:53:01.

was on two warnings. Once you've started to make mistakes you are

:53:02.:53:08.

more likely to keep making them. She was so close. That is the

:53:09.:53:09.

heartbreak. And for Palmisano, she did not know

:53:10.:53:28.

until she crossed the line. Bitter disappointment followed by huge

:53:29.:53:32.

relief. We will talk about Tom Bosworth in the men's race at

:53:33.:53:38.

2:20pm. But it means that we have time to talk about last night. I

:53:39.:53:45.

think the Hall of London was alive with excitement after Great

:53:46.:53:55.

Britain's men's team won a gold medal in the 4x100 relay. Colin

:53:56.:53:57.

Jackson thought that they were definitely going to win it. And they

:53:58.:54:03.

did. So did I! I predicted it. I was the only one who predicted it.

:54:04.:54:08.

Totally wishful thinking but it came true for me. Here is what happened.

:54:09.:54:17.

Great Britain have seen the women do a lap of honour for their silver

:54:18.:54:20.

medal. They will be inspired. He's stood like a colossus over his

:54:21.:54:36.

sport for so long and the final moment has come. Great Britain, it

:54:37.:54:41.

is all nothing. Never won the world title.

:54:42.:54:48.

Safely away, CJ Ujah has made a great start.

:54:49.:54:54.

Jamaica made a great start and studied USA by Great Britain are

:54:55.:55:01.

leading. Adam Gemili leading brilliant way down the back

:55:02.:55:04.

straight. He will give it to Danny Talbot. In Britain still leading.

:55:05.:55:11.

Yoann Blake at the front but Great Britain are in front! Away he goes!

:55:12.:55:22.

The USA, coming back, it is going to be gold!

:55:23.:55:26.

Great Britain have won the gold medal! Mitchell-Blake, that was

:55:27.:55:58.

phenomenal. That is just amazing. Everything came together. This was a

:55:59.:56:01.

perfect race. Are gold-medallists of the night. Here they are, the new

:56:02.:56:09.

world champions. We worked so hard, the guys behind the scene, the whole

:56:10.:56:13.

of British athletics. And it is great to win it in London, our

:56:14.:56:18.

hometown. Amazing. The feelings, the emotions, the euphoria, I am trying

:56:19.:56:23.

to register that we are world champions. It was sensational,

:56:24.:56:31.

wasn't it? Everybody watching who might not have had a chance to be in

:56:32.:56:38.

here, described the sound. It was huge. There was only one place to be

:56:39.:56:44.

last night. Watching that on a screen or watching that in the

:56:45.:56:49.

stadium. You could hear everyone holding their breath is. That final

:56:50.:56:55.

bets, the excitement, you cannot describe it. As I was making my way

:56:56.:57:05.

home, it was the kind of thing I was thinking, the whole nation,

:57:06.:57:09.

everybody was out on the street, everybody was really enjoying it.

:57:10.:57:14.

Because it was unexpected coming into the championships, it was

:57:15.:57:20.

supposed to be about Mo Farah, but we were witnessing of the birth of

:57:21.:57:23.

the track team in Great Britain that could do serious damage going

:57:24.:57:29.

forward. Not just the men. The men won the gold. They were the heroes

:57:30.:57:37.

of the night. It set it up perfectly, the girls getting silver.

:57:38.:57:40.

They will have seen that and they will have known that and they will

:57:41.:57:43.

have bought, we got to go out and prove ourselves. They work together

:57:44.:57:48.

as a team. They all work together in the camps, they support each other

:57:49.:57:51.

through the tough times and then they get to celebrate together in

:57:52.:57:56.

the good times. It was so nice that they both got on the podium. The

:57:57.:58:00.

youngsters getting through, they've got a big future ahead of them. I'm

:58:01.:58:04.

sure it was a huge celebration that they all enjoyed last night. Let's

:58:05.:58:15.

look at the women's race. They are such a tight unit. They are friends

:58:16.:58:19.

and they go through the motions. They really enjoy being on the track

:58:20.:58:27.

together. They do. They are a really big team and they work together so

:58:28.:58:32.

much. That is reflected in the changeover is going so well. It is

:58:33.:58:40.

really rare. If the men get a baton round they are likely to get a

:58:41.:58:44.

medal. Women take less risks but they are equally as well drilled as

:58:45.:58:54.

the men. They barely make a mistake. It was so good to see them back up

:58:55.:58:59.

last year's result and then stay out, that footage of them staying to

:59:00.:59:03.

watch the men get the gold medal was really special. It showed how tight

:59:04.:59:07.

this group is. You mentioned that they are still so young. They backed

:59:08.:59:16.

up bronze with silver medal. We opened up the programme talking

:59:17.:59:19.

about super Saturday and the fact that five years ago there was the

:59:20.:59:22.

culmination of all that hard work, three guys in the peak of their

:59:23.:59:28.

lives, creating that special moment. Maybe last night we saw the

:59:29.:59:33.

beginning of the future of British track athletics. They witnessed

:59:34.:59:39.

potentially the next five years. Maybe behind the scenes you have

:59:40.:59:47.

kids in the stands, maybe carrying the baskets, they will be inspired

:59:48.:59:52.

by what happened and that is the story of the sport. People take time

:59:53.:59:56.

to come through and sometimes it is a little bit of luck. It is these

:59:57.:59:59.

moments that give them the confidence to go forward. These are

:00:00.:00:07.

not relay teams that goal, we are now gold-medallists, we will leave

:00:08.:00:10.

it at that. People who are knocking on the door of individual gold

:00:11.:00:15.

medals, that will give them the confidence going forward. It was

:00:16.:00:20.

nice to see Adam Gemili after not being selected in an individual

:00:21.:00:24.

event, playing a pivotal role in giving them that lead that they held

:00:25.:00:29.

onto. So much talent. They are on the back of all the newspapers.

:00:30.:00:34.

Let's have a look at one of them. They are the men of the future. Like

:00:35.:00:39.

we said, and night they will have celebrated and remembered for many

:00:40.:00:43.

years to come. It was supposed to be Mo Farah on the back of the papers.

:00:44.:00:48.

close of course in Beijing when both finished with the same time.

:00:49.:00:56.

Yesterday didn't go quite as planned and it was a very different result

:00:57.:01:03.

for Mo Farah, we join it after 3000 metres.

:01:04.:01:08.

Of all people, it is the Australian trying to move things on, maybe

:01:09.:01:15.

inspired by Pearson. This is a real injection of pace for the first time

:01:16.:01:25.

but of course Mohammed won't worry about Tiernan. He will keep an eye

:01:26.:01:34.

on it but won't jump in behind him. He moved to the outside when he was

:01:35.:01:42.

being lapped by Mo Farah and made a mistake in the previous race.

:01:43.:01:49.

Tiernan there running steadily, he won't be able to last at that place.

:01:50.:01:54.

They come round into the straight and it is four laps to go. The

:01:55.:01:58.

tension is increasing. We don't know how fast so these athletes are in a

:01:59.:02:07.

slow race. Mo is controlling the group and they are doing what he

:02:08.:02:13.

wants them to do. The pace starts to pick up so there is a Brit at the

:02:14.:02:16.

front of the group and one towards the back. Farah where we would want

:02:17.:02:23.

him all to be, controlling things. Even physically making sure they are

:02:24.:02:29.

not going to intimidate him. Varies Andrew Butchart in another global

:02:30.:02:34.

final here, chasing his team-mate, chasing Mo Farah. They are all doing

:02:35.:02:42.

that at the moment. Kejelcha is dangerous in his finish. It is

:02:43.:02:46.

building gradually, no big sprint yet. It still isn't very quick but

:02:47.:02:53.

the dangers are collecting at the front. Just behind Mo Farah is

:02:54.:03:06.

Chelimo, the American, also Kejelcha and the Kenyan. Mo is closing down.

:03:07.:03:14.

He looks up a lot at the screen, he's looking around him and he knows

:03:15.:03:18.

who's there. The other night when I was talking to him after the

:03:19.:03:22.

10,000m, I said to him were you nervous at any point and he said no,

:03:23.:03:27.

I was counting them up, thinking he cannot beat me in a sprint finish,

:03:28.:03:32.

he cannot beat me in a sprint finish, getting more confident.

:03:33.:03:35.

Hopefully that's what's happening to him now. Two and a half laps to go

:03:36.:03:42.

and this is where Mo Farah has shown he's the best in the world in

:03:43.:03:46.

closing a race from this point. Nobody has been able to find a way

:03:47.:03:51.

to get past him long enough to stay out there and snatch the win away

:03:52.:04:00.

from him. Tiernan will see the two laps to go marker and tell his

:04:01.:04:04.

grandchildren one day I was 15 metres ahead of Mo Farah in the

:04:05.:04:09.

World Championship final with two laps to go, but I'm not sure it will

:04:10.:04:13.

stay that way. They will all want to kick but nobody will want to go past

:04:14.:04:20.

Farah. They are lining up behind Mo Farah and closing down quickly. Now

:04:21.:04:25.

the race is on. Mo Farah relaxing as much as he can and he doesn't want

:04:26.:04:29.

to let anyone past him now. I think his tactics will be hold off any

:04:30.:04:40.

move. Andrew Butchart coming along the outside, trying to get involved.

:04:41.:04:49.

They pass Tiernan. Two men of Great Britain, wearing the vests. The

:04:50.:04:52.

stadium is rocking to the beat set by Mo Farah and Andrew Butchart.

:04:53.:05:00.

Kejelcha, moving up onto his shoulder. And he's trying to make a

:05:01.:05:08.

move. Can Mo respond? He's got to be careful here, Kejelcha stretching.

:05:09.:05:18.

The crowd response, Edris response. Now Mo has got to control this run

:05:19.:05:22.

and get himself into a position where he can go for it now. He has

:05:23.:05:28.

never won from this position, he's under real pressure. He still in

:05:29.:05:37.

touch, closing slightly. Chelimo is coming as well. Mo Farah has got to

:05:38.:05:46.

try to muster a sprint. Chelimo is coming. Does he wait for the inside

:05:47.:05:51.

gap? He's boxed, he's got no room. Here comes Farah, he's got to find

:05:52.:05:59.

some room on the inside but Edris was going to take the medal. It's

:06:00.:06:04.

going to be Ethiopia at last. Mo Farah fights for the silver!

:06:05.:06:11.

So the silver medal for Mo Farah at the end of last night's five

:06:12.:06:17.

kilometres, you can see what it took out of them. Let's see what

:06:18.:06:24.

Silverman to him. He was able to get up, he still had a smile on his face

:06:25.:06:28.

when he took the silver medal. Eventually he shared that moment

:06:29.:06:33.

with his family and the 60,000 strong crowd last night. It wasn't

:06:34.:06:37.

the way he wanted things to end and a few hours later, it got even more

:06:38.:06:45.

emotional for Mo Farah. There is nothing not to be said, history

:06:46.:06:51.

doesn't lie. It is real hard work and dedication. Year after year.

:06:52.:06:58.

Sometimes I find it bizarre how certain people write certain things

:06:59.:07:02.

to be able to suit how they want to sell the story. The fact is, it is

:07:03.:07:12.

what it is. And you know what I have achieved this through hard work.

:07:13.:07:17.

Sometimes you guys get to me at certain times because you never

:07:18.:07:22.

write the fact. The fact is over the years I have achieved through my

:07:23.:07:27.

hard work, through hard work and pain. If there was something as I

:07:28.:07:35.

crossed my line, as I said in the first interview, it's like a broken

:07:36.:07:46.

record repeating itself. It's like I've achieved what I have achieved

:07:47.:07:51.

and then you are trying to destroy it. It's like, OK.

:07:52.:07:58.

Mo Farah at a press conference today, alluding to questions asked

:07:59.:08:04.

about him, his biological passport and his coach, Alberto Salazar, and

:08:05.:08:10.

you could see how disappointed he was but that was the last note

:08:11.:08:16.

people had to say about him. Yes, and I can see exactly how he would

:08:17.:08:21.

be. Everybody works hard, everybody trying to compete in a World

:08:22.:08:25.

Championships works very hard, but when you have worked hard and then

:08:26.:08:30.

have the questions asked time and time again, it must be frustrating.

:08:31.:08:35.

He's the person who really knows, and he knows that and it is question

:08:36.:08:40.

Time after time, it must be hard. Maybe he hasn't helped himself

:08:41.:08:51.

either in terms of he hasn't been open with the media, he wouldn't do

:08:52.:08:54.

interviews or speak to people because he's not comfortable in that

:08:55.:08:56.

situation. He's much more comfortable just doing his talking

:08:57.:08:58.

on the track but it kind of comes with the territory. When the

:08:59.:09:00.

questions are there, you have to address them and give answers to

:09:01.:09:04.

them. I guess like Usain Bolt finishing his 4x100 metres on the

:09:05.:09:09.

track last night, it is not the way the public will necessarily remember

:09:10.:09:15.

him, and it is a silver added to the gold medal he won a week before.

:09:16.:09:26.

Here is how Mo's major medals looks and for anyone that isn't bad. No,

:09:27.:09:32.

he's the most dedicated British sports person, probably globally,

:09:33.:09:37.

not including relays or anything like that. How he has amassed that

:09:38.:09:41.

and the dominance he has enjoyed over the rest of the field, that

:09:42.:09:46.

kind of magic spell he has almost cast over them, and it has taken

:09:47.:09:50.

five years to work out how to beat him. They beat him when he was tired

:09:51.:09:54.

on the night and right at the end of his career so it's almost like a

:09:55.:09:58.

mirror image except one is in the tenth and one is in the five. In the

:09:59.:10:04.

beginning he didn't quite believe enough or have that domination over

:10:05.:10:14.

everybody. Now he was tired, and maybe in the end he always talks

:10:15.:10:18.

about the slow race being his best race and his best chance for

:10:19.:10:21.

finishing strong but maybe it would have suited him better if it had

:10:22.:10:25.

been a little bit quicker earlier on.

:10:26.:10:28.

Very quickly, we will see him on the road at stadiums like this will miss

:10:29.:10:33.

Mo Farah, it will be very different. Yes, but I think the next generation

:10:34.:10:38.

will come in and this Championships should never be looked at as, oh,

:10:39.:10:51.

this is sad because it's the last championships for Usain Bolt or Mo

:10:52.:10:53.

Farah, Greg Rutherford couldn't be here. It should be looked at as a

:10:54.:10:56.

celebration of the new stars coming through, and our boys and girls in

:10:57.:10:59.

the relay and what's still to come. So much more to look forward to

:11:00.:11:03.

including Tom Bosworth in the men's 20 kilometres hoping to add to the

:11:04.:11:07.

medal tally today. The man has great memories of racing in London. I felt

:11:08.:11:12.

a lot of pressure going into that race. The nose in -- the noise in

:11:13.:11:21.

those last two laps, I want to go and do it again, it was that

:11:22.:11:26.

special. The feeling is incredible, I wish I could bottle that up. I had

:11:27.:11:36.

no idea I could go that quickly. When I saw the clock, as you can see

:11:37.:11:41.

from my reaction, I couldn't believe how far under the time I was.

:11:42.:11:50.

Smashed it! A new world best. It has been a phenomenal two or three years

:11:51.:11:56.

for you in terms of the progress you have made, and Rio was a step in

:11:57.:12:01.

that. I was never this world-class junior athlete, it's taken a long

:12:02.:12:05.

time to develop its longer and faster and now I've finished in the

:12:06.:12:09.

top eight in the Olympic Games. Is worth really stretching the field

:12:10.:12:14.

out now. In London I just want to back up what I did in Rio, that was

:12:15.:12:20.

a complete shock. I finished about 30 places higher than I was ranked.

:12:21.:12:24.

Showing I'm a top eight athlete is what I want to do, and maybe this

:12:25.:12:29.

year on home turf who knows. Given what you have said, what do you need

:12:30.:12:35.

to do to go to the next stage? Year on year, I have ever done is try to

:12:36.:12:40.

train better, eat better and become more consistent. Getting that bit

:12:41.:12:44.

faster. I've done more altitude this year so I'm trying to look for the

:12:45.:12:52.

1% s. And you will have this opportunity on the streets of London

:12:53.:12:55.

in front of the home crowd, what do you think that will be like? I'm

:12:56.:13:00.

hoping it will be the best day of my life. I missed London 2012 by nine

:13:01.:13:07.

seconds qualifying time so it was agony for me. Now we are here but I

:13:08.:13:11.

never dreamt I would be a contender on the day. I have said it before,

:13:12.:13:17.

it's like the 12th man in football, having the home crowd behind you.

:13:18.:13:22.

For me it is so inspiring and I hope I can inspire others and put the

:13:23.:13:26.

performance in. Is there a danger you can get carried away with the

:13:27.:13:32.

occasion? Yes, it is a 20km race, I cannot go flying off at the

:13:33.:13:36.

beginning. Something I'm quite proud of is I'm mentally strong so I can

:13:37.:13:41.

put the nerves to one side, focus on the job in hand, and when the

:13:42.:13:46.

crowds, when I need their help, that is when I tune into them and

:13:47.:13:51.

hopefully they will help me home. You have talked about altitude and

:13:52.:13:54.

your training, you are very much part of the endurance community now.

:13:55.:13:59.

You come on camps with Mo and the rest of the guys. How important has

:14:00.:14:05.

that been for you? I have loved it. For me personally racewalking, it's

:14:06.:14:15.

been like coming into the team, and when you're away from home it makes

:14:16.:14:20.

life easier and the environment more enjoyable. Just spending time with

:14:21.:14:24.

these people, training with them and seeing I work just as hard as they

:14:25.:14:29.

do, and they can relate. It is not the strange event that no one knows

:14:30.:14:35.

anything about. You are leading the way and your performance in Rio must

:14:36.:14:38.

have helped in terms of that exposure. Do you feel as though you

:14:39.:14:42.

cannot concentrate on being as good a race walker as you can be, you

:14:43.:14:48.

have to be a flag bearer as well? Yes, I said recently it's nice

:14:49.:14:52.

there's other guys and girls coming through now. Five qualified for

:14:53.:14:56.

London but they are not just good, they are getting world-class

:14:57.:15:00.

already, a lot quicker than I did so that's great. I will end up being

:15:01.:15:07.

beaten soon enough by another Brit and that's great for the event. For

:15:08.:15:10.

me it's great because I got to that point where I'm world-class and for

:15:11.:15:13.

them to beat me, they have to be world-class. I'm pleased I started

:15:14.:15:17.

that journey for racewalking and the depth will grow and grow.

:15:18.:15:23.

Steve Cram asking the questions the very hopeful Tom Boswell. To keep

:15:24.:15:33.

you up-to-date with the women's 20 kilometres race, the British runners

:15:34.:15:41.

in -- walkers in 28 and 40. Tom Bosworth, we saw him in the

:15:42.:15:49.

anniversary games. He's a guy making good strides, walking, not running.

:15:50.:15:57.

He deserves to do really well today. He has worked really hard and it is

:15:58.:16:03.

interesting that he's talked about being part of the team. He's one the

:16:04.:16:10.

admiration of the rest of the British endurance teams because he's

:16:11.:16:13.

very much part of that group. He trained extremely and is bringing

:16:14.:16:17.

through a group of youngsters behind him. He's making a step up to the

:16:18.:16:30.

20-kilometre walk. Both boys really appreciate that they are getting a

:16:31.:16:36.

chance to walk on a course that will be lined with the support they will

:16:37.:16:40.

never have experienced before. Making the most of that. Just to be

:16:41.:16:45.

on top of the game is what they want. Absolutely. Paula is going to

:16:46.:16:55.

hop over to the commentary box which is not actually that easy to get to.

:16:56.:16:59.

Take your heels off and take your time. Racing alongside Tom Bosworth.

:17:00.:17:11.

Let's see how things are looking in London because Steve Cram is down

:17:12.:17:14.

there and we'll talk this through things. Thank you. Beautiful day in

:17:15.:17:26.

London. We hope there will be plenty of spectators. An event which

:17:27.:17:37.

captured everybody in Rio de Janiero, drawing focus to race

:17:38.:17:44.

walking in a way that it has not had for some time. They could not have

:17:45.:17:53.

had a better venue for today. Right in front of Buckingham Palace, and

:17:54.:17:58.

the Mall. The famous venue for the finish of the London Marathon. Given

:17:59.:18:05.

special permission to use it for the events. We've had 50-kilometre walks

:18:06.:18:08.

already. Bethan was just outside her personal

:18:09.:18:26.

best. That disqualification from the Chinese athlete, right at the

:18:27.:18:37.

closing stages. For people who are not familiar with the rules. Tom

:18:38.:18:54.

Bosworth is right on the left. I'm sure Tom will be delighted. He will

:18:55.:19:03.

be racing in front of a home crowd. Plenty of opposition. The Chinese

:19:04.:19:13.

interestingly have not picked the men who finished in the gold and

:19:14.:19:20.

silver positions in Rio de Janiero. The speed may well set him in good

:19:21.:19:36.

stead. This man has been picked in the Chinese trials. He got a

:19:37.:19:41.

phenomenal trial. This man is defending from Spain. Lopez. It is a

:19:42.:19:52.

little bit more relevant. I will talk more at this gets going. The

:19:53.:20:08.

final race, the men's 20 kilometres. Tom Bosworth and Calum Wilkinson for

:20:09.:20:16.

Great Britain. The Mall is packed, beautiful day, the conditions are

:20:17.:20:20.

very good indeed. The temperature is about 21 degrees. Each lap is two

:20:21.:20:28.

kilometres. They head down towards Admiralty Arch. Spin around. Head

:20:29.:20:43.

back up the Mall. They walk around the Phantom at the top end. We will

:20:44.:20:57.

be getting splits every kilometre. We are looking at about four

:20:58.:21:08.

minutes. Did not get a personal best. They are well under way. What

:21:09.:21:28.

shall we talk about? The rules? They will be stuck together quite a long

:21:29.:21:33.

time in early stages. If you are new to race walking, the judges are

:21:34.:21:41.

looking for two things. You might have seen a lot of pictures and

:21:42.:21:48.

super slow motion. The judges judge with their naked eye. They are

:21:49.:21:51.

looking for contacts with the ground, and inevitably they do lose

:21:52.:21:59.

contact with the ground, occasionally. It is in the eye of

:22:00.:22:04.

the beholder. They can issue a warning if they see that you are

:22:05.:22:11.

losing contact. They have a yellow paddle. If you continue to do so you

:22:12.:22:17.

could receive a red. Three red paddles and you will be out. The

:22:18.:22:22.

other thing is straight leg. You've got to lockets and then bend it.

:22:23.:22:31.

Straight leg in front of you until your body moves over your leg. Then

:22:32.:22:40.

you can bend your leg. So they are looking for two things. They have

:22:41.:22:43.

two symbols on the paddles to tell you what they are warning you about.

:22:44.:22:52.

Three red and you're out. No judge can offer you more than one red. You

:22:53.:22:56.

have to have three separate judges from different countries. So they

:22:57.:23:01.

cannot have one judge picking on one person three times. Three separate

:23:02.:23:06.

judges decide. The chief judge get the ultimate say and he can overrule

:23:07.:23:19.

everybody if he wants to. It is something everybody have to get

:23:20.:23:24.

their heads around as part of the discipline. You take part in the

:23:25.:23:27.

marathon and you know that you will go through some rough patches. The

:23:28.:23:33.

race walkers need to accept the physical endurance of it. They need

:23:34.:23:38.

to accept the technical side of it and that they cannot make those

:23:39.:23:43.

mistakes. I think Tom Bosworth has talked a lot about how much he

:23:44.:23:47.

worked on that technique, to ensure that however tired he is, if he

:23:48.:23:53.

doesn't get lazy, loses technique, and not be able to hold that

:23:54.:23:57.

straight leg. That is something that he drilled a lot so that people ask

:23:58.:24:06.

whether he does any running. Tom does not do much about because he

:24:07.:24:10.

does not want to get into his head that kind of bending the knee that

:24:11.:24:17.

we do is brothers. He wants to make sure that he's technically strong on

:24:18.:24:22.

there. You can tell that his technique is not right. He knows

:24:23.:24:28.

that the judge will be there. They do need to accept it as part of the

:24:29.:24:38.

game. I remember talking to the winner of the 50-kilometre walk and

:24:39.:24:43.

he said you just got to accept that it happens and you cannot take it

:24:44.:24:49.

personally, you cannot hold it against any of the judges, they are

:24:50.:24:52.

doing their job and you just have a bad day and you made a mistake. Just

:24:53.:25:03.

having a look behind. The Australian, the Olympic

:25:04.:25:05.

bronze-medallist moving up on the right-hand side. Very early stages.

:25:06.:25:11.

The Chinese athletes coming through. Just setting the early pace. You

:25:12.:25:15.

were with me when we were chatting earlier in the week. Tom said, I

:25:16.:25:23.

will go with him. If it is fast it is vast. He hopes it is not too

:25:24.:25:27.

fast. A little bit of bad weather would have maybe help because his

:25:28.:25:31.

technique stand-up in the difficult conditions. Perfect conditions and

:25:32.:25:43.

perfect road services. We have a world best in the women's 50

:25:44.:25:50.

kilometres. It could be that we are heading for a quick time. This is

:25:51.:25:55.

the first time that they take the wide route. Around the monument and

:25:56.:26:01.

around the Fountain. Big crowds which is great to see. It's a very

:26:02.:26:09.

British thing, race walking. People asking where it starts, is it a new

:26:10.:26:13.

thing? It is one of the oldest disciplines in track and field. Part

:26:14.:26:22.

of the championships in 1880. It develops out of the British pastime

:26:23.:26:25.

of pedestrians. I love this concept. A lot of bets were going on in a lot

:26:26.:26:31.

of endurance events. Horse racing, running, walking as well. One of the

:26:32.:26:36.

theories which I really liked the idea that footmen walked alongside

:26:37.:26:43.

the carriages of their masters, they were never allowed to run. They

:26:44.:26:48.

always had to walk. Eventually their masters started betting as to which

:26:49.:26:56.

was better than the other. The desk trainers, as it was called, became a

:26:57.:27:00.

really good way for guys to bet against each other and that is how

:27:01.:27:08.

it started. The rules were introduced and we ended up with the

:27:09.:27:18.

rules which were adopted in 1908 and we had the Olympic event. , Has

:27:19.:27:30.

received a yellow card? I'm not sure if it was for him or Takahashi. It

:27:31.:27:36.

may have been to the group as a whole. It may be was them saying,

:27:37.:27:43.

don't get too carried away here. Can we get information on that? Not on

:27:44.:27:50.

the caution but the red ones will come up. They've started fairly

:27:51.:28:00.

quickly. The first kilometre was three minutes 58. Tom has not broken

:28:01.:28:04.

80 minutes. He's just checking his watch. They are right on one hour.

:28:05.:28:12.

I'm a little surprised to see, there. That to see Tom there. Maybe

:28:13.:28:22.

they hung around as long as they could. He's not very quick in the

:28:23.:28:33.

latter stages. Certainly, the race plan he was alluding to earlier on

:28:34.:28:41.

was one of patients. Maybe a bit of excitement in the early stages. He

:28:42.:28:52.

was at the front. He's still got people sitting behind him and going

:28:53.:29:02.

with his pace. I think Tom was expecting the Chinese team, they are

:29:03.:29:11.

all very young, they have made a big step in senior championships and he

:29:12.:29:14.

was expecting them to push the pace early on and make a very fast pace.

:29:15.:29:24.

Maybe he's trying to motivate the team. Another warning shown. You've

:29:25.:29:31.

got to accept that will happen. People will be disqualified. Some of

:29:32.:29:36.

the main contenders will get disqualified. The German is having a

:29:37.:29:45.

great season. He's much further back and starting off the way that Tom

:29:46.:29:51.

said he was going to. Lopez, the defending champion in the red and

:29:52.:29:54.

the yellow, is going close as well. He's just behind him. The told

:29:55.:30:00.

German. Have Germany won a gold medal? I will let you think about

:30:01.:30:08.

it. They've at second. Second and third in the decathlon. In the

:30:09.:30:20.

javelin. Thank you. They did win the gold medal. This is going against

:30:21.:30:29.

what Tom said and that's not a criticism. He is either feeling good

:30:30.:30:32.

there, he's certainly rising to the occasion. He knows that he's come to

:30:33.:30:41.

the championships with a prospect of, he knows to be in contention

:30:42.:30:46.

he's got to be quicker than ever before. Certainly set out at quicker

:30:47.:30:55.

pace. He did this in the Rio de Janiero. He went had to the front

:30:56.:30:59.

and he built up a fear lead. He may be trying to replicate that. He may

:31:00.:31:08.

be inspired by this morning, seeing him go out early and ill on it.

:31:09.:31:15.

Picked out Tom Bosworth a couple of years ago and said, this guy coming

:31:16.:31:20.

through could be really good. He could really make that breakthrough

:31:21.:31:27.

to the world stage. Just taking his drink.

:31:28.:31:33.

They stole in leads and we were talking in the interview about being

:31:34.:31:41.

part of the endurance programme with the other athletes, with Mo, in

:31:42.:31:53.

Beijing, Tom is a popular part of the endurance team as well. Young

:31:54.:32:02.

Callum starting to become part of that as well. The Brownlee brothers,

:32:03.:32:09.

there as well, Beth Potter, it's a great community. I see them on the

:32:10.:32:14.

track training quite a lot. There's a whole bunch of people wanting to

:32:15.:32:19.

do race walkers and Tom is a talisman for it. In a short space of

:32:20.:32:23.

time he has become well-known quickly, and why not, he's done

:32:24.:32:27.

incredibly well and that mile performance at the anniversary games

:32:28.:32:38.

has certainly helped as well. Callum, there he is, good timing.

:32:39.:32:45.

Winning the world Junior Championships, an incredible

:32:46.:32:46.

performance. Tom maintaining good pace here, but Callum from

:32:47.:32:59.

Newmarket. The trial was held in New Haven Park in leads and Callum

:33:00.:33:10.

finished second to Tom. Tom was alluding in that interview that

:33:11.:33:25.

Mobot was walking much faster than him at a comparable age. So Tom

:33:26.:33:31.

Bosworth reading this, the Olympic bronze-medallist, the Australian,

:33:32.:33:52.

Smith in the group, Takahashi, wine Wang, Lopez of Spain. The

:33:53.:33:59.

silver-medallist from London hasn't been going so quick these days, but

:34:00.:34:04.

he is off the back of this group. They haven't quite settle down but

:34:05.:34:08.

Tom is setting a good pace here. It's amazing how when you get into

:34:09.:34:14.

the race, whatever plans were there beforehand, you can very quickly

:34:15.:34:18.

readjust and think I feel good, let's have a go here and that's

:34:19.:34:22.

obviously what seems to be happening. Yes, I think if they had

:34:23.:34:26.

been walking really quick, walking well below 80 minute pace, I think

:34:27.:34:31.

Tom would have settled into that park but he knows he's in shape to

:34:32.:34:35.

improve his personal best, he's been improving those times all year so he

:34:36.:34:40.

thinks why am I going to walk slower than that pace, I might as well walk

:34:41.:34:44.

clear at the front, get a clear view of the road

:34:45.:35:03.

ahead of me and keep this moving at a pace that will suit me. He can

:35:04.:35:08.

close fast but if he leaves it to slow, you are leaving it open to be

:35:09.:35:11.

able to put big surges in there which are risky to cover because you

:35:12.:35:14.

might risk losing your technique in those surges. When you think about

:35:15.:35:16.

it, he walked not much outside one hour 20 in Rio, and although it is a

:35:17.:35:19.

nice day today it is nowhere near the conditions they had to face in

:35:20.:35:23.

Rio. It was a little bit of a race of attrition to some extent. The

:35:24.:35:28.

disqualifications become a factor when they are fatigued. To make it a

:35:29.:35:34.

good, honest pace is not a bad option. Another few warnings being

:35:35.:35:40.

given there but we are yet to have the first red card. Callum Wilkinson

:35:41.:35:47.

just going through your picture. Fairly even pace at the front here,

:35:48.:35:53.

a very even pace being set by Britain's best here.

:35:54.:36:06.

15.56. It's almost been metronomic, I guess that is one of the features

:36:07.:36:14.

of racewalking. But it is the ability to change pace, particularly

:36:15.:36:19.

when fatigue sets in. It's a bit like the marathon, if you can just

:36:20.:36:23.

kind of stay steady and then start to race the latter stages, that's an

:36:24.:36:28.

incredible ability to have. Some are just hanging on, and Mobot comes

:36:29.:36:32.

through taking water there. There is Barrondo, the

:36:33.:36:53.

silver-medallist from London. Racewalking is popular in several

:36:54.:36:55.

countries around the world. Lincoln did a personal best in the

:36:56.:37:17.

race before then. That is Tom, straight leg. You can see the S. So

:37:18.:37:26.

he's got to watch that, that is a caution. Each of those paddles

:37:27.:37:42.

should have an S. It will have an inverted L for lifting. That looks

:37:43.:37:53.

like its load Tom up a little bit, that caution. You can tell they are

:37:54.:37:59.

suddenly gathering behind him. Maybe off the pace a tad. I think he was

:38:00.:38:09.

also just checking to see, is it Wang behind him, did he want to come

:38:10.:38:15.

through? Tom wants to keep his pace moving, I don't think he wants to be

:38:16.:38:20.

leading at this point. He might be more comfortable sitting back in the

:38:21.:38:23.

park but he doesn't particularly want the pace to drop. As I've said

:38:24.:38:27.

that he starting to surge a little bit and building up a bit of

:38:28.:38:31.

daylight now. It helps when the group goes into the bend, they

:38:32.:38:37.

obviously move a little bit more into single file and then gather

:38:38.:38:42.

again after that. Tom now happy to relinquish the lead. What a great

:38:43.:38:48.

view. Free tickets for the marathon is of course and for the walks.

:38:49.:38:59.

Mobot Wilkinson, the junior champion, on the track going

:39:00.:39:03.

through. These championships have been phenomenal. I used that word a

:39:04.:39:08.

bit too much last night, but it was. The crowds in the stadium, now on

:39:09.:39:16.

the roads. It has been like London all over again. In a different way

:39:17.:39:22.

because obviously people are coming specifically to watch athletics. I

:39:23.:39:26.

know we have been going on about medals and thankfully we got a few

:39:27.:39:30.

last night, but that aside I think it's been one of the best World

:39:31.:39:34.

Championships I have ever been to, either as an athlete or as a member

:39:35.:39:38.

of the media watching. The atmosphere has been incredible and

:39:39.:39:43.

it's been the drama that we have seen on the track, a little bit off

:39:44.:39:50.

the track as well. Surprise after surprise. Favourites not winning,

:39:51.:39:55.

and as we saw last night, the legends of the sport coming to the

:39:56.:39:59.

end of their careers. There has been so much to talk about, so much to

:40:00.:40:04.

draw people into athletics. I just hope we can keep those people

:40:05.:40:08.

interested for the next few years as we head towards Tokyo, and the

:40:09.:40:14.

Commonwealth Games next year of course, the European Championships,

:40:15.:40:18.

another World Championships, then off to Tokyo. Yes, all of that to

:40:19.:40:23.

look forward to and I think it just goes to illustrate the beauty and

:40:24.:40:34.

magic of athletics. It is that drama, the fact it is not scripted

:40:35.:40:37.

and it's all about the stories and emotions coming out. People can

:40:38.:40:39.

identify with the journey Sally Pearson has been on over the last

:40:40.:40:42.

four or five years, and to come back and grab that victory last night,

:40:43.:40:45.

the whole stadium could appreciate that, even those watching athletics

:40:46.:40:49.

for the first signs can see that emotion. It is contagious and it

:40:50.:40:54.

builds up. It is the unpredictability against the fact

:40:55.:40:58.

some bits are unpredictable but you can never guarantee what happens on

:40:59.:41:04.

the racing circuit and you have to be in the right position to see that

:41:05.:41:19.

moment. -- seize the moment. Kevin Campion the leader, and looking down

:41:20.:41:29.

and being told Mobot Wilkinson has had a red card. The first junior to

:41:30.:41:36.

receive a red card, that's a dubious honour. If you are joining us, the

:41:37.:41:44.

way the rules work - the judges are looking for maintaining contact with

:41:45.:41:48.

the ground according to the naked eye. They have no screens to look

:41:49.:41:54.

at, no super slow motion, and they cannot use any other aids. So they

:41:55.:41:58.

are looking for that and straight leg. Mobot has been warned about

:41:59.:42:06.

lifting. I say warned, the red card means instead of a caution that's a

:42:07.:42:14.

warning. You are allowed two and the third one is a disqualification. And

:42:15.:42:21.

each warning has to come from a separate judge. Tom Bosworth in the

:42:22.:42:28.

lead group and they are starting to then out a little bit. I was talking

:42:29.:42:33.

to Mel earlier and she said if I can stay with them and they drop off one

:42:34.:42:37.

by one, who knows what size the group is going into the last lap.

:42:38.:42:44.

Campion of France, the leader, another like Tom, hasn't broken one

:42:45.:42:48.

hour 27 this pace right on the edge for him as well. Then

:42:49.:43:03.

Wang the Chinese trials were held back in March. The time is set of

:43:04.:43:20.

1:17:54. The normal time. I guess we should, Paula, apart from the red

:43:21.:43:25.

cards which are part of the event and competition, racewalking has

:43:26.:43:30.

been perhaps more than anything else decimated by positive drug tests.

:43:31.:43:35.

Most of them with Russia. We had the one coach who has more than 20

:43:36.:43:41.

athletes eventually got caught between 2005 and 2015. He has now

:43:42.:43:46.

been banned for life. The Olympic champion from London. The Russian

:43:47.:43:49.

team are not here but they had a whole bunch of their racewalking

:43:50.:43:53.

programme completely wiped out. Then you think of the Italian as well so

:43:54.:44:02.

that has helped the case for the likes of Tom, knowing the drug

:44:03.:44:05.

testing regime is working much better now than it was a few years

:44:06.:44:10.

back, and that helping in terms of bringing the time to be closer to

:44:11.:44:14.

what the likes of Tom would be capable of. In fact the only Russian

:44:15.:44:19.

who is here is the youngster. I have been trying to look for him, see

:44:20.:44:24.

what best he's wearing. The 18-year-old neutralised athlete. He

:44:25.:44:32.

is there, in the blue fading into pink.

:44:33.:44:39.

In the women's event, she was wearing an orange version of that.

:44:40.:44:57.

Shirobokov produced a great time, but it was in Russia, so we will

:44:58.:45:08.

take it with a pinch of salt. We have had newly confirmed champions

:45:09.:45:14.

in this event from 2009, 2000 and 11, in the context of the biological

:45:15.:45:19.

passport. One group have been hit and he should be banned for coming

:45:20.:45:24.

anywhere near athletics for the rest of his life. There are still rumours

:45:25.:45:29.

that he's involved with coaching athletes and that is when you've got

:45:30.:45:36.

to look at the sanctioning of the entourage, we would love to have

:45:37.:45:42.

live bands -- life bans but also for the entourage because they are

:45:43.:45:48.

introducing and forcing athletes down a path and I'm sure they are

:45:49.:45:54.

being told that everybody is doing it. That is one of the biggest point

:45:55.:45:59.

they are trying to get across. All events tried to reinforce that it is

:46:00.:46:06.

not OK, all athletes don't do it. If you do, you're doing yourself a

:46:07.:46:11.

disservice, so it is something we will come down harder on but it has

:46:12.:46:21.

been badly hit by that and they want to see the balance restored to the

:46:22.:46:22.

competition. That group being whittled down a

:46:23.:46:35.

little bit. Briefly, the red cards. He is carrying one at the moment.

:46:36.:46:42.

Has been given a warning. I think another caution. This is just a

:46:43.:46:46.

casual observer. I'm being facetious but you would

:46:47.:47:09.

assume there is merit in not drawing the eye of the judges. You must

:47:10.:47:14.

think there is a skill to being a judge and keeping an ion. There are

:47:15.:47:20.

so many legs moving. How do you check that all of them are going

:47:21.:47:26.

straight. It must be harder when they are a big group. It will get

:47:27.:47:33.

easier. It must be easier to be spotted if there are infringements

:47:34.:47:34.

when you're out on your own. There was a drink thrown to him. He

:47:35.:47:56.

caught it. It was good dexterity. Are they allowed to do that? I saw

:47:57.:48:06.

this on go up on the earth. In the marathon you need to get the drinks

:48:07.:48:11.

table. You can pick up the pace and run for a little bit. You need to

:48:12.:48:16.

get to bit of space. If you're walking it is harder to do that.

:48:17.:48:23.

You've got to pick it up yourself be passed that within the zone. They

:48:24.:48:29.

can still parted to. I don't have a problem with that. All I saw was his

:48:30.:48:42.

arm in the earth. Why would you do that unless you try to catch

:48:43.:48:47.

something? If we get the chance to have a look at it we will. He's in

:48:48.:48:52.

the middle of the group and I'm happy to see him in there. He's

:48:53.:49:01.

never front near a big group and he's had a couple of cautions.

:49:02.:49:10.

Callum Wilson has had a couple. He's dropped position.

:49:11.:49:17.

They are both first-rate leg. -- Callum Wilkinson. And just doing of

:49:18.:49:28.

the computer. That the best information I can give you. It has

:49:29.:49:34.

changed a couple of times. It's all I can do, really. At this point, two

:49:35.:49:42.

red cards. One more and he will be disqualified. The speed has been

:49:43.:49:52.

pretty good all the way through. Is Tom OK? He's had a niggle this week.

:49:53.:50:00.

He does not look as comfortable as he wars a few minutes ago. He had a

:50:01.:50:10.

minor niggle with his need coming into it but speaking to him just

:50:11.:50:14.

before he was very excited and he was looking forward to the chance to

:50:15.:50:17.

be out there soaking up the atmosphere. He knows that he's in

:50:18.:50:23.

great shape. He's trained well. He's been beating his personal bests. The

:50:24.:50:29.

Diamond League where he came into the London stadium and broke the

:50:30.:50:35.

world record really boosted his confidence and racewalking. Alex

:50:36.:50:46.

Wright also getting a warning. I just correcting myself about Callum.

:50:47.:50:54.

It is for the straight leg. There he is. Confirmation of the red cards.

:50:55.:51:01.

Straight leg infringement. He was disqualified in that event. It was

:51:02.:51:06.

the anniversary games. They were racing so fast. Another yellow put

:51:07.:51:23.

out. Tom is now tucked in the group. The pace is now the. You can see a

:51:24.:51:29.

little bit of strain appearing on the faces in the group. Alex Wright

:51:30.:51:38.

is falling away. Starting to get a few more red cards appearing for

:51:39.:51:43.

athletes. Not so much in the lead group as such and certainly none of

:51:44.:51:50.

the main contenders. They are still on the pace that

:51:51.:52:13.

would bring them under 420. There is the youngster. He is just ahead of

:52:14.:52:25.

Tom Bosworth. The Russian is allowed to compete as a natural athlete. He

:52:26.:52:35.

is satisfied the criteria set in terms of drug testing before these

:52:36.:52:39.

championships to allow him to compete as a neutral athlete.

:52:40.:52:50.

A gap appearing. Trying to cover that move. Tom needs to be patient.

:52:51.:53:02.

I know there's been a lot of talk about his ability to win a medal.

:53:03.:53:15.

There's a long way to go and Wang, with the confidence that he has,

:53:16.:53:22.

just looked as though there was an attempt to break away there. Tom

:53:23.:53:30.

Bosworth bringing the group back. They are whittling it down. The tall

:53:31.:53:37.

German is right here in the middle. He's got a leaning back action. He

:53:38.:53:46.

tall and right in the middle of the group. Tom Bosworth is sitting third

:53:47.:53:48.

or fourth place. The British athletes, the idea was

:53:49.:54:15.

to get away and out of London. Obviously that went very well. Tom

:54:16.:54:22.

went to Paris for a few days. He arrived on Tuesday. Every athlete

:54:23.:54:29.

has a different regime. Mo Farah likes to come in pretty late. Others

:54:30.:54:33.

like to come in ten days before they compete. There are various trains of

:54:34.:54:42.

thought on that. Some are learning that process as to when is best to

:54:43.:54:49.

race. Mo Farah has an issue because he's got a week of racing. He came

:54:50.:55:05.

in on Tuesday. Tom prefers the ten days. You need to experiment. It is

:55:06.:55:18.

very much in relation to how much work doing. They walk a bit quicker

:55:19.:55:34.

and recover better. It works to -- helps to work on speed because it is

:55:35.:55:36.

hard in an endurance event. Sometimes you need to come down to

:55:37.:55:54.

sea level and give your legs a chance to recover. Another look at

:55:55.:56:03.

the watch. Tom is coming through the kilometre. They've been really on

:56:04.:56:06.

for the whole time. The other aspect, we've spoken about the

:56:07.:56:18.

physiological side of things. We talk about what this does to your

:56:19.:56:22.

body and the different technique of running. If you think about how fast

:56:23.:56:35.

an 800-metre runner is turning over, when they are at full pelt, when

:56:36.:56:45.

they will be a bit slower, the wear and tear... The cadences quicker

:56:46.:56:53.

because it's a shorter turnover. I bet you it's a quicker turnover. I

:56:54.:57:02.

like the word you used. Shuffle. It was not so much of an insult. The

:57:03.:57:09.

one I think that it more than anyone is cost della -- Costella. I was not

:57:10.:57:19.

sure he was leaving the ground at times. One of the greatest of all

:57:20.:57:33.

times. Finished ahead on that occasion. So far, Tom Bosworth

:57:34.:57:43.

acquitting himself very well. The crowd supporting in a way that only

:57:44.:57:52.

he could have dreamt. I forgot, he did walk in London, they had a test

:57:53.:58:01.

event. He took part in that. I said, have you ever... And he said, he had

:58:02.:58:05.

walked in London at a test event. Experienced this is a little bit.

:58:06.:58:17.

Another kilometre there. Approaching ten kilometres, approaching halfway.

:58:18.:58:28.

The bad news, the first red has gone to Tom Bosworth and it may be

:58:29.:58:41.

because of picking up the pace. It is for maintaining a street leg. Tom

:58:42.:58:46.

is the first to receive that. If there will be other red cards.

:58:47.:59:12.

Maybe this is a risky strategy. That change in pace has resulted in them

:59:13.:59:15.

receiving a red card. It is a little bit worrying for him.

:59:16.:59:42.

I don't think this is what he would have wanted. He would very much be

:59:43.:59:47.

wanting a clean sheet for as much of the race as he can. He's checked a

:59:48.:59:53.

little bit. He's allowed them to move ahead. He is checking his own

:59:54.:59:56.

watch as they go through the point. He needs to get back in control of

:59:57.:00:01.

it at this point. He doesn't want to lose that control brings technique

:00:02.:00:06.

and settle back into that group. He needs to let himself calm down.

:00:07.:00:08.

Client should note. If you are on the Mall, thank you

:00:09.:00:22.

for the support you are giving to the athletes. They do appreciate it

:00:23.:00:25.

but it can give the boost of adrenaline that can get you carried

:00:26.:00:31.

away. The red card was for lost contact, not the bend leg, and

:00:32.:00:36.

suddenly he's now on his second one so that means another judge has red

:00:37.:00:41.

carded him. It has to be a different judge each time so Tom is literally

:00:42.:00:47.

walking a tightrope here. He is one red card disqualification and it is

:00:48.:00:57.

very early here. Tom moving to the side and said I should not be in the

:00:58.:01:02.

position leading this. Where are the names who were the prerace

:01:03.:01:18.

favourites, including Lang. Takahashi is on the far side, there

:01:19.:01:22.

are three Japanese athletes in that group, and Lopez at the back, the

:01:23.:01:29.

defending champion. Tom has got to be really careful here. It is a

:01:30.:01:34.

little early. Both British athletes have received two red cards for not

:01:35.:01:41.

maintaining contact. Although that lead group is smaller than it was,

:01:42.:01:52.

and they have slowed again a little bit... As I'm seeing a few more red

:01:53.:01:57.

cards appearing on the computer, but only one in that lead group is Tom.

:01:58.:02:04.

He certainly the only one who's received two, in fact the only one

:02:05.:02:06.

in the lead group who has had any. He's at the back of the group now

:02:07.:02:24.

and it may well be that, because I haven't spoken to much to Tom about

:02:25.:02:28.

how that affects you psychologically as well, as we get a good view of

:02:29.:02:34.

Buckingham Palace, and there we can see the current standings of how

:02:35.:02:38.

that lead group is made up. The youngster, Takahashi I mentioned,

:02:39.:02:54.

Lopez the defending champion, then these others as we go down,

:02:55.:02:56.

detached. So the man in front now is the

:02:57.:03:18.

German, Linke, whose been having a very good season. Paula is reminding

:03:19.:03:24.

me it is left-hand day-to-day. And he is left-handed. On world

:03:25.:03:33.

left-handed Day, Linke is leading the race, and very much one of the

:03:34.:03:39.

favourites coming into the race too. As you and I both know, left-handed

:03:40.:03:46.

people are more intelligent, good looking, etc etc. I'm joking,

:03:47.:03:58.

right-handed people. Half. We've had our first disqualification and it is

:03:59.:04:03.

not Tom Bosworth, it is Alex Wright. He started receiving cards early.

:04:04.:04:08.

But that's my point, it is very early for Tom to received two red.

:04:09.:04:14.

Mobot Wilkinson did early for not maintaining contact and Alex Wright

:04:15.:04:19.

has received three for the same offence. Every kilometre that goes

:04:20.:04:24.

by Tom is still there is a kilometre closer to him being able to contend.

:04:25.:04:28.

It just worries me that when the pace picks up, that is when

:04:29.:04:33.

technique really comes into play. Tom gritting his teeth here and

:04:34.:04:38.

pushing on. He will obviously explain this to us afterwards, but

:04:39.:04:46.

this is a bold move by Tom Bosworth, carrying two red cards. Attracting

:04:47.:04:51.

the eye of the judges. He has transgressed according to two of

:04:52.:04:55.

them. One more and he will be disqualified. He is putting that to

:04:56.:04:59.

the back of his mind and trying to push on here. The pace has been

:05:00.:05:04.

steady, it has been Tom's personal-best pace but he's decided

:05:05.:05:09.

that I'm still going to push on. I think I can break up this group. He

:05:10.:05:14.

said he would wait until the last five K but he's done it earlier than

:05:15.:05:18.

that so he must be feeling good, but he must keep his technique together

:05:19.:05:24.

here. And the bad news is, I have just been told three. Only Tom will

:05:25.:05:32.

be able to explain this afterwards because he's now going to be

:05:33.:05:36.

disqualified. Tom Bosworth is in the front but he has received three red

:05:37.:05:41.

cards from three different judges for not maintaining contact. He

:05:42.:05:45.

hasn't been notified himself yet, but whether or not that was the

:05:46.:05:49.

right thing to do, to push the pace when it pushes your technique to the

:05:50.:05:53.

edge, only he will be able to explain. But it seems an all or

:05:54.:05:59.

nothing strategy from Tom Bosworth. On this occasion it has fallen apart

:06:00.:06:03.

in spectacular fashion in the worst possible place in the World

:06:04.:06:07.

Championship in front of a home crowd. This, not what he wanted, and

:06:08.:06:12.

all of his supporters would have wanted and indeed what British

:06:13.:06:17.

racewalking would have wanted. Mobot Wilkinson is carrying two, and the

:06:18.:06:22.

chief judge will notify Bosworth and make sure he is aware, and will have

:06:23.:06:29.

to stop. I will be interested to see what the reaction is. We are working

:06:30.:06:40.

off the computer. And it tells us, Alex Wright was the first to receive

:06:41.:06:53.

three, Tom Bosworth has now. He has just been told and now he has found

:06:54.:06:57.

out. He must have been feeling good but it's also about keeping the

:06:58.:07:04.

technique together. Tom Bosworth is crashed. It is a sad sight to see,

:07:05.:07:11.

but it is part of racewalking. You raise the competitors but you are

:07:12.:07:20.

also at the behest of the judges, required to hold your technique

:07:21.:07:24.

together. On this occasion Tom Bosworth has not managed to do that

:07:25.:07:29.

and under the strictest examination he has been found wanting. Well,

:07:30.:07:38.

that is a terrible thing to happen for Annie Walker in any event but it

:07:39.:07:42.

happens fairly regularly and I can assure you it will happen to others

:07:43.:07:49.

out here. The crowd, they are notified down there. Tom is still by

:07:50.:07:57.

the side of the road. As the 18-year-old Russian is leading with

:07:58.:08:06.

Linke behind him. It was an all or nothing strategy. He must have known

:08:07.:08:13.

he was on two. Only he will be able to explain why he did that. I can

:08:14.:08:19.

only assume he was feeling great but there are two and -- two elements to

:08:20.:08:30.

this. Yes, judging by his reaction it didn't look like he knew he was

:08:31.:08:39.

on two. He was asking the judge, "What, me?" But when he made the

:08:40.:08:42.

break he was gritting his teeth in a way I haven't seen him do before so

:08:43.:08:47.

it was a calculated break where he was trying to increase the pace but

:08:48.:08:51.

he looked very surprised when he was told that. I'm sure they are showing

:08:52.:08:55.

the red card, it must have seen that. There's enough support staff

:08:56.:08:59.

out on the course that they would be able to warn him, to say sit back a

:09:00.:09:04.

little bit and not take risks, certainly until the closing part of

:09:05.:09:08.

the race at least, and don't try and push off the front at this point

:09:09.:09:16.

when you are already on two cards. Tom Bosworth has waited for this

:09:17.:09:21.

moment for so long, he has trained so hard for it, and to end in this

:09:22.:09:26.

way, that must be the worst possible feelings. The defending champion

:09:27.:09:34.

Lopez is playing a canny waiting game. He has done this before. Lopez

:09:35.:09:39.

just off the back of the group but who wouldn't want to lose too much

:09:40.:09:45.

contact here. Linke leaving it. Another yellow puddle being

:09:46.:09:53.

delivered. And this lead group, with the exception of Bosworth, are

:09:54.:09:59.

clean. There he is. That is a sad sight. I think that's one of the

:10:00.:10:06.

judges, who may well know, the racewalking fraternity. But the

:10:07.:10:15.

disconsolate Tom Bosworth, his dreams shattered. But as we said, it

:10:16.:10:20.

is part of the event and it is going to happen to Tom and great

:10:21.:10:26.

champions, and others who are challenging to become great

:10:27.:10:28.

champions, but you have to stay within the rules. I just wonder, as

:10:29.:10:34.

you said, I think it's a good point, Paula, I think there's meant to be

:10:35.:10:38.

aboard up somewhere on the route that signifies it but it is very

:10:39.:10:43.

visible when you get a red card or it is meant to be. You are meant to

:10:44.:10:48.

be notified, and he should have been aware. He will tell us afterwards if

:10:49.:10:54.

he knew. But the fact he went to the front and made a bold bid, there is

:10:55.:11:00.

Lopez and the gap is growing with the two Japanese athletes on the

:11:01.:11:04.

back as the pace is picking up now, but if he didn't know, he will want

:11:05.:11:09.

to know why he didn't know. But I'm pretty sure he should have done.

:11:10.:11:14.

It's an interesting question but I don't know what the grounds are for

:11:15.:11:20.

appeal, I presume there aren't any within the racewalking rules. Once

:11:21.:11:23.

they are shown on the third card, they do have to step aside. They are

:11:24.:11:28.

good at that, you never see any of them arguing. They are distraught

:11:29.:11:35.

but rarely do they argue back. I was watching the women's race earlier,

:11:36.:11:39.

the judges have that compassion for them. They have given them the red

:11:40.:11:43.

card, they have to, it is in the rules, but they feel for the

:11:44.:11:47.

athletes and they are part of the strong community and they do have

:11:48.:11:51.

that support amongst each other. It is just accepted I think that that

:11:52.:11:57.

is the rules and you will be carded and you will step off. That's like

:11:58.:12:02.

it has to come from three separate people to make sure it isn't just

:12:03.:12:07.

one person seeing something and then continuing to see that throughout

:12:08.:12:14.

the race. I mention the fact there is meant to be aboard out there that

:12:15.:12:20.

signifies. There is a big screen I can see which is essentially at 90

:12:21.:12:27.

degrees to the runners, they cannot see it directly unless they turn and

:12:28.:12:32.

look at it. I don't know if there is another one out there that they can

:12:33.:12:38.

seek without turning to look at it. Anyway, I'm sure Tom will clarify

:12:39.:12:42.

that for us. Afterwards at some point. He was up there, the first to

:12:43.:12:52.

put the pace on, and Linke has carried that on. Now they are

:12:53.:12:58.

breaking up, the German who won the European cup, then this 18-year-old

:12:59.:13:03.

Shirobokov of Russia, competing as a neutral athlete in the bloke. Then

:13:04.:13:13.

Wang, the best of the Chinese. Martin carrying the flag for Spain.

:13:14.:13:18.

The Olympic bronze-medallist is there. He looks like he's limping a

:13:19.:13:25.

little bit, it may be his technique but there is a grimace on his face.

:13:26.:13:30.

He's certainly working hard but is there a bit of pain as well? He's

:13:31.:13:35.

working hard to stay with this group, definitely, Paula. If that is

:13:36.:13:42.

the pain of staying with the group etched on the face? Shirobokov,

:13:43.:13:51.

Wang, and this group starts to split up.

:13:52.:14:27.

Martin in there for Spain. Only 23 himself and Lopez looks as if his

:14:28.:14:31.

challenge, unless something happens to those in front here, is starting

:14:32.:14:37.

to be a forlorn one. Way back now, a good 50m behind the lead group, the

:14:38.:14:42.

defending champion. And no one in this lead group has received any

:14:43.:14:53.

warnings whatsoever. The other Brazilian finished in both walks,

:14:54.:15:05.

Bonfim, ninth in the 50 K, for not far ahead of Tom Bosworth, and he is

:15:06.:15:07.

still involved. Just having a look up at the screen.

:15:08.:15:34.

That is the screen I was talking about. There was a screen with the

:15:35.:15:44.

names on and Fujisawa was looking at it. Wang, Fujisawa, Finke, in

:15:45.:15:59.

contention here. German flags being waived. Spain

:16:00.:16:30.

have yet to win one. Never a great performance from them. In an event

:16:31.:16:38.

they would not be thinking they would have a gold medal contention.

:16:39.:16:47.

Eve-10-mac is having a great season performing for them. They are

:16:48.:16:52.

getting close to the final five K. Still this group of eight. Nobody

:16:53.:17:00.

has made the big move. They've whittled it down.

:17:01.:17:12.

Wang is working hard. This is his main bid to stretch it out. He will

:17:13.:17:30.

be getting feedback from his team-mates out on the course. There

:17:31.:17:40.

isn't the big screen in the stadium but they do have that particularly

:17:41.:17:46.

when they go round the title of the two bands. They are able to see

:17:47.:17:51.

what's happening down the road and work out who is in that group and

:17:52.:17:55.

who has been dropped from that group.

:17:56.:18:05.

There is the defending champion struggling a little bit now. Cannot

:18:06.:18:14.

really see any challenge coming from behind. This is where the medals

:18:15.:18:24.

are. Not too many athletes in that. Only four finished. It was only

:18:25.:18:29.

added to the programme three weeks ago. Then we had the women's 20 K.

:18:30.:19:00.

Martin is the first of this group to receive a red. There will be more in

:19:01.:19:09.

this group as we get into the last five kilometres. They will

:19:10.:19:14.

transgress. It is stretching out as well. The

:19:15.:19:36.

transgression is for not maintaining contact. Five kilometres to go, the

:19:37.:19:46.

pace is still there, that was a quicker section. 90 minutes and 45

:19:47.:20:03.

seconds. Another warning to the bronze-medallist. He's had a couple

:20:04.:20:07.

of those but has yet to receive a red card.

:20:08.:20:26.

For all this group will have what did -- wanted this to unfurl like

:20:27.:20:35.

this, with the exception of Martin you want to go into the last few

:20:36.:20:41.

kilometres with a clean sheet. You could argue that Martin would be the

:20:42.:20:48.

one who would least be thinking about winning a medal. The Olympic

:20:49.:20:56.

bronze-medallist, Linke, the German, over on the far side. Wang, the

:20:57.:21:01.

quickest in the group. All of them will be thinking, how do

:21:02.:21:19.

I win this? Am I feeling good? Technique holding together? Bonfin

:21:20.:21:30.

of Brazil, can he get amongst the medals?

:21:31.:21:44.

I wonder if they are watching in Buckingham Palace. They've got a

:21:45.:21:50.

great view. I wonder if they are even there. If they are, then maybe

:21:51.:21:57.

they are looking out. They will be sad to see that Tom Bosworth is not

:21:58.:22:05.

flying the flag for us anymore. If you're trying to run and carry an

:22:06.:22:13.

injury it alters your form. I wonder if it played a role. That is the

:22:14.:22:22.

lead group. Eight men from eight different countries with a chance of

:22:23.:22:30.

winning a medal here. A little further down. Callum Hawkins and.

:22:31.:22:44.

Callum Hawkins was of course in the marathon. Calum Wilkinson picked up

:22:45.:22:48.

two red cards but is still in the 39th spot. He's going well. Not far

:22:49.:23:04.

off his personal best. He's still there. It looks

:23:05.:23:22.

like Shange is closing up. He is past Lopez. Talking about speeding

:23:23.:23:32.

up, Bonfin has now received the red. He's received his first red. I'm

:23:33.:23:37.

pretty sure we will see more as we go through with four kilometres to

:23:38.:23:41.

go. Just two laps left. Arevalo, the first time the

:23:42.:24:00.

Colombian has come to the front. Maybe to take a drink. Shange is

:24:01.:24:11.

flying through. He's only six seconds off the group. He is not

:24:12.:24:17.

received any warnings about technique. Shange pushed himself

:24:18.:24:26.

into this. The group is starting to break up. Arevalo is doing it with

:24:27.:24:35.

some success. It is Linke and then the 18-year-old Shirobokov. Where is

:24:36.:24:45.

the South African? How is he progressing? The medals in that gap.

:24:46.:24:59.

You can see them probably three or four seconds behind. Arevalo in the

:25:00.:25:20.

lead. China were hoping their selection, a new young team,

:25:21.:25:28.

starting to look under pressure. You would not choose to let these three

:25:29.:25:39.

draw. Fujisawa has received his first red. It is all happening.

:25:40.:25:47.

Reaches the back of that group. If you join a group like that, you

:25:48.:25:52.

catch them by surprise, sometimes the best thing to do is keep moving

:25:53.:25:56.

past them but then he will be attracting the eyes of the judges.

:25:57.:26:02.

He's settled gradually into that group at this working his way to the

:26:03.:26:08.

front of it. They are starting to lap athletes and that adds a little

:26:09.:26:09.

bit of confusion. It is a rock performance by Shange.

:26:10.:26:35.

He doesn't have a big victory over 20 kilometres. He's very quick on

:26:36.:26:40.

the track and is maybe putting that to good effect. He's walking well

:26:41.:26:46.

inside his personal best. They are few years. He's sailed past. He is

:26:47.:26:51.

maintaining contact. Very quick technique. You talk about that

:26:52.:26:57.

cadence. Look at how quickly he's come onto the back of back group.

:26:58.:27:06.

What's he going to do here? Your coach would say when you move up to

:27:07.:27:12.

a group like that, just keep going. They will be like, where has this

:27:13.:27:18.

guy come from? Not one of the pre-race favourites. It's a surprise

:27:19.:27:22.

to see him there. The South African has come from nowhere. He was miles

:27:23.:27:31.

behind, relatively speaking. And now, even though the speed is up,

:27:32.:27:35.

he's taken the lead. South Africa lead this. I'm not even sure if this

:27:36.:27:43.

is his last kilometre. It has improved by ten seconds. He's picked

:27:44.:27:54.

up. He's caught them by surprise. You can see the shock on his face.

:27:55.:28:06.

He moved forward to challenge it. Shirobokov, you could almost see the

:28:07.:28:10.

look on his face. He was like, where did you come from? Had already

:28:11.:28:15.

established and enabled him to come back in contact with the chasing

:28:16.:28:19.

group and then with the lead group. Now he's starting to establish

:28:20.:28:23.

daylight. Shirobokov is fighting hard to maintain contact. Sitting

:28:24.:28:29.

there and following in the slipstream. Celebrated his birthday

:28:30.:28:39.

at the beginning of the month and he could well be celebrating a medal.

:28:40.:28:48.

He is with that, 346 kilometre, loan this group apart. The Olympic

:28:49.:28:54.

bronze-medallist is back there. All of a sudden there are three men.

:28:55.:29:07.

Trying to get back. Keeping an eye on the red card. At the moment, the

:29:08.:29:18.

top three have none. Trying to make an effort to get back but not able

:29:19.:29:27.

to at the moment. Calum Wilkinson is still going from Britain.

:29:28.:29:43.

Shange was inspired after watching the 2008 Olympics and he wants to

:29:44.:29:52.

make his country profiles still doing that so far. I don't think

:29:53.:29:59.

they've ever one a medal before. I don't think they would have done. I

:30:00.:30:06.

will check. Shange competed in the big race in Australia. His last

:30:07.:30:16.

race, he finished outside the top 20. Here he is in the World

:30:17.:30:23.

Championships, right at the front. Has come storming through.

:30:24.:30:38.

One lap to go, and Linke has had his first, as he starts to tire, his

:30:39.:30:55.

technique starts to falter. Linke in the space of a minute has received a

:30:56.:31:03.

second red caution. The bell sounds on the 20km walk, three men have a

:31:04.:31:07.

five kilometre lead over Bonfim. Five men perhaps still in contention

:31:08.:31:26.

but none of these three in the front have received a red card. Bonfim has

:31:27.:31:44.

worn, Linke has two. Wang, one of the pre-race favourites struggling a

:31:45.:31:55.

bit. Then Martin. Kim has been lapsed. The German, fighting

:31:56.:32:08.

fatigue. And also one more red card away from a disqualification. He

:32:09.:32:11.

looks very tired indeed, had hanging. Look at this, Shange made

:32:12.:32:19.

pay for going too hard too soon, but he had to work hard to get back to

:32:20.:32:23.

the group. An incredible kilometre sprint. Arevalo of Colombia.

:32:24.:32:36.

Shirobokov, the Russian competing as a neutral athlete. These four

:32:37.:32:42.

surely, if nothing happens in terms of red cards, are going to contest

:32:43.:32:47.

the medals here. The three of them walking side-by-side. Endurance as

:32:48.:32:55.

ever, in any event of this nature, but the pressure placed on the

:32:56.:33:01.

joints, the hips, knees, that's what you train for. It isn't just the

:33:02.:33:06.

cardiovascular fitness, it is the strength you need to hold together

:33:07.:33:16.

to keep that technique together. Lungs burning, but so are the legs.

:33:17.:33:27.

This is a good pace here at the front, and Bonfim desperately trying

:33:28.:33:33.

to get back to them as they take the turn. They go all the way back to

:33:34.:33:39.

Buckingham Palace, they turn there and effectively the home straight.

:33:40.:33:47.

Keep watching on this computing, it is difficult to see what all of the

:33:48.:33:52.

judges are doing out there but they seem to be steering clear of these

:33:53.:33:58.

three at the moment. They are not even seeing any caution is coming

:33:59.:34:02.

out for them so technique very much holding together. Mark Butler giving

:34:03.:34:14.

me a note saying the kilometre is equivalent to six minute my link. He

:34:15.:34:19.

was walking in that 17th kilometre of that race. And now he may well be

:34:20.:34:26.

paying for it. Arevalo, the Colombian. Trying to break away

:34:27.:34:39.

here. Former world junior champion, he has been unbeaten this year over

:34:40.:34:45.

20 kilometres, and now attempting to win the biggest race of his career.

:34:46.:34:51.

The World Championships now looks as though it could be between the two,

:34:52.:35:01.

although Bonfim is hanging in there. Shange may have done too much, too

:35:02.:35:06.

soon. He's desperately taking in water, pouring it over his head. The

:35:07.:35:11.

judges looking so closely at these main contenders. Ali to see any late

:35:12.:35:21.

drama in terms of disqualifications? Bonfim has gone past Shange now. Who

:35:22.:35:30.

wants to get a view of those ahead. That is just a caution for Arevalo,

:35:31.:35:42.

not a red card. Colombia ahead of the Russian athletes competing as a

:35:43.:35:47.

neutral, then the Brazilian, will he get amongst the medals? Can he hang

:35:48.:35:52.

onto this? He's carrying one read but these to moving well. Shirobokov

:35:53.:36:01.

has a little look, I'm not sure what he was looking out. Maybe one of the

:36:02.:36:04.

walk is going in the opposite direction. They have got to time

:36:05.:36:11.

this right. Arevalo looks tired, working so hard. Bonfim again

:36:12.:36:16.

looking across, maybe at the board that signifies how many reds, and

:36:17.:36:20.

that's a smart thing to do because it will tell him he has got one. Now

:36:21.:36:27.

Shange has picked up one and that is not the maintaining contact, that's

:36:28.:36:31.

for the bent knee so the South African finally picks up a warning,

:36:32.:36:35.

but not these three. Nothing happening as far as the top two are

:36:36.:36:40.

concerned. Shirobokov, a Russian junior record for him in Sochi but

:36:41.:36:46.

you went to the European World Cup he only finished 12. Linke was well

:36:47.:36:52.

behind him here so that wasn't a good form guide coming into here but

:36:53.:36:56.

then he went into the junior Championships recently and won the

:36:57.:37:00.

10,000m title. Pain etched on the face here of Arevalo, trying once

:37:01.:37:09.

more to break the Russian, trying to get a bit of daylight between him

:37:10.:37:14.

and this 18-year-old. Bonfim looks like he may have given up the chase

:37:15.:37:19.

for gold and silver but the bronze will be his if he can keep it

:37:20.:37:23.

together in the last few hundred metres. The Russian looks back, for

:37:24.:37:30.

the first time isn't concentrated on winning this, and Arevalo moving

:37:31.:37:34.

away. He has been patient, he's kept his technique together and he has

:37:35.:37:39.

been the one who has been pushing and pushing. Finally he is not only

:37:40.:37:43.

broken the park but he's broken Shirobokov. So Arevalo, former world

:37:44.:37:54.

junior champion himself, now 24, and heading for what could be a personal

:37:55.:38:03.

best for him as well as he holds his technique together. Being cheered by

:38:04.:38:09.

these big crowds on The Mall. It wasn't the day for Tom Bosworth who

:38:10.:38:12.

was the first to be disqualified after leading in the early stages of

:38:13.:38:17.

pushing on. And I think it's the Colombian flag he has in his hand,

:38:18.:38:24.

not a drink, not a sponge. He is always prepared or has been

:38:25.:38:28.

preparing for this victory way before anyone else. Another look

:38:29.:38:32.

behind, there is no challenge coming. Shirobokov has nothing

:38:33.:38:39.

really here, and he moves into the home stretch, the Colombian flag

:38:40.:38:43.

already draped. He just needs to keep going, and off he goes. The

:38:44.:38:49.

chief judge can make a late disqualification. He's having a very

:38:50.:38:54.

close look. The Russian Shirobokov is making one last surge but it is

:38:55.:39:01.

gold for Colombia! The Silver goes to Shirobokov. A great race in the

:39:02.:39:06.

end, congratulations for the youngster. And Bonfim, after a

:39:07.:39:13.

fourth place at the Olympic Games in his home crowd, now gets the bronze

:39:14.:39:19.

for Brazil, and Arevalo looks to the sky. Shange, who made that massive

:39:20.:39:28.

effort to get up to the group, went to hard too soon. Linke coming in

:39:29.:39:34.

fifth place. The Olympic bronze-medallist Bert Smith behind

:39:35.:39:39.

him, and very tired men coming in. A new national record it was the big

:39:40.:39:47.

Colombian. He has taken a big chunk of his best. Shirobokov just inside

:39:48.:40:04.

1.19 and Bonfim with a new national record as well, in third place. It

:40:05.:40:07.

was the worst of days for Tom Bosworth. Callum Wilkinson is still

:40:08.:40:14.

going with a kilometre to go, and after two red cards early on its

:40:15.:40:18.

good that he managed to hold it together. The flag draped around his

:40:19.:40:24.

neck, and across his shoulders, he knew he was going to win. He

:40:25.:40:28.

prepared for this moment one map out. Arevalo of Colombia is the

:40:29.:40:38.

champion. So they continue to come across the line. Great venue, great

:40:39.:40:46.

crowds out there. They were so hoping Tom Bosworth could give them

:40:47.:40:50.

something to cheer. He did for quite a long time and it's only for Tom to

:40:51.:40:55.

explain exactly what happened out there, if he was aware he was

:40:56.:40:59.

carrying the two red cards when he went to the front, whether he knew

:41:00.:41:04.

the perilous situation he was in, which resulted in him being

:41:05.:41:07.

disqualified. He was dreaming this could be his day but it was Arevalo

:41:08.:41:15.

who became the champion. A new national record. Silver to

:41:16.:41:19.

Shirobokov and Bonfim taking the bronze.

:41:20.:41:25.

Thank you, Steve, so Colombia's Arevalo getting the first gold medal

:41:26.:41:29.

for his country at these championships. A huge celebration

:41:30.:41:34.

and he even had time to get the Colombian flag and drape it over his

:41:35.:41:40.

shoulders. Not a good time for Great Britain's Tom Bosworth who suffered

:41:41.:41:44.

three red cards which meant a disqualification. The sight of his

:41:45.:41:48.

face showed what it meant for him to go out of the race after he was

:41:49.:41:52.

leading the result. He composed himself and later on caught up with

:41:53.:42:00.

Phil. Commiserations. The pictures say it

:42:01.:42:04.

all, head in hands, what was going on from your perspective? I was just

:42:05.:42:10.

getting going. My body sometimes shuts down at around 12 K so I

:42:11.:42:15.

thought I would push on. When I'm going fast and that my best I'm

:42:16.:42:19.

usually my most technically efficient so I am gutted this has

:42:20.:42:25.

happened. It is part of racewalking, part of the event. I am going to

:42:26.:42:31.

look back at what happened, learn and get better because

:42:32.:42:34.

physiologically I can keep with those lead guys. I felt I was just

:42:35.:42:38.

moving on the steps so I will go back to the training ground and work

:42:39.:42:46.

on it. Were you aware you had two red cards? I remember going round

:42:47.:42:51.

the lap before and seeing I had one card. I felt pretty comfortable,

:42:52.:42:55.

then fought two to come in one lap was a real shock, hence my reaction

:42:56.:43:02.

of devastation. How do you manage that devastation in your mind now?

:43:03.:43:06.

Because you have but so many expectations on yourself, let alone

:43:07.:43:12.

the rest of us. Exactly, it shows how far I have come and racewalking

:43:13.:43:17.

has come, and this is just the beginning. These days happen but

:43:18.:43:22.

they make the good days taste really good. The support I have had, from

:43:23.:43:25.

my family and everyone who has come here today... I'm sorry, I let them

:43:26.:43:31.

down and I couldn't get a medal today but I know I can get a medal

:43:32.:43:36.

one day. I'm not going to be complacent, I will work hard on my

:43:37.:43:41.

technique and show what I can really do. Tom, you let nobody down, don't

:43:42.:43:46.

be so harsh on yourself, and as you say this is part of it, it is a very

:43:47.:43:54.

harsh sport. You can be picked up on the most minor things at the most

:43:55.:43:58.

brand of times. Yes, I pushed on and I felt comfortable in my technique.

:43:59.:44:02.

It was exciting, I was getting through one of the hardest parts of

:44:03.:44:06.

the race. I am running through things in my head and I know what I

:44:07.:44:11.

can do better. It is racewalking, this is part of the event and it is

:44:12.:44:20.

my first DQ in four and a half years. That is the fastest I have

:44:21.:44:23.

ever gone so it shows I'm physically able to do it. I want to be a leader

:44:24.:44:29.

of this event and a medallist one day. All I thought going through my

:44:30.:44:36.

head was, who says I cannot do this pays? Nobody. I got to know Mo well

:44:37.:44:45.

over the last few years, I looked at how he kicks away, he's just a human

:44:46.:44:50.

being and I am a human being. He had the disappointment in Beijing, and

:44:51.:44:54.

what he was able to do from that, this is really the outset of your

:44:55.:44:59.

career. Yes, it was a shame so many people had to see this one and not

:45:00.:45:05.

Rio where it went so well. I will certainly let this sink in and get

:45:06.:45:09.

stronger from it and get better. Thank you to everyone.

:45:10.:45:14.

He did not let his nation down, let his family down. But he was

:45:15.:45:25.

devastated and as he reflects on it he will be devastated. You could see

:45:26.:45:29.

underneath that, he was very much putting a brave face on it. He was

:45:30.:45:33.

saying the right things, he knows what he has to do. He needs to learn

:45:34.:45:37.

from it. You can see in these moments here, he clearly didn't

:45:38.:45:47.

know. He did not know that he had collected it. It hit him hard and

:45:48.:45:51.

emotionally knocked the stuffing out of it. He decided to push on quite

:45:52.:46:00.

early, he was going for gold. All the more devastating that it

:46:01.:46:04.

happened then. When he looks back on it and rationalises it. He will say

:46:05.:46:12.

that he's going to speed he's not gone before. He will be saying,

:46:13.:46:17.

whether they let it go before. He will learn from it and build on it.

:46:18.:46:26.

He had the fitness to do that. Now he needs to work on the technical

:46:27.:46:29.

side of it. That has been the strong point. He is not regularly

:46:30.:46:39.

disqualified. He will learn from it and say, maybe I got carried away.

:46:40.:46:45.

Maybe he will say, what do I need to work on. I won't let my technique

:46:46.:46:56.

though. Do you think he got it wrong? I think he wanted to do that

:46:57.:47:05.

and inevitably the crowd will have fed into that. I know what it's like

:47:06.:47:11.

to run up the Mall when you've got support behind you. That will have

:47:12.:47:17.

fed into him but he's prepared himself. I think he believes that he

:47:18.:47:29.

could walk at that pace. I think he thought he was taking a little bit

:47:30.:47:36.

of a risk. They came together and did not have the time or the luxury

:47:37.:47:43.

to do that. It was devastating. He will dust himself down. The other

:47:44.:47:53.

British racer in competition, Calum Wilkinson. Just under one hour and

:47:54.:47:59.

24 minutes. Jumping from junior to seniors. Let's look forward to the

:48:00.:48:07.

last evening of an incredibly exciting and dramatic World

:48:08.:48:13.

Championship. The 800 metres get under tonight. The 5000 metres is at

:48:14.:48:18.

735. It will feature Laura Muir but also Eilish McColgan. We caught up

:48:19.:48:39.

with her. You made the decision to move up. It was a difficult decision

:48:40.:48:42.

to make initially because the steeplechase is the event that I

:48:43.:48:47.

first made the other big games, made the World Championships. For me, it

:48:48.:48:50.

was quite difficult to leave behind because I felt like that was my

:48:51.:48:53.

event and the one that I really loved. But yes, I was forced into

:48:54.:48:59.

making that decision, almost, because my feet would not allow me

:49:00.:49:03.

to do another steeplechase. I had to switch from one event to another in

:49:04.:49:07.

order to continue doing what I loved. That is the decision we made.

:49:08.:49:20.

Do you feel the pressure of being related to your mother? I always get

:49:21.:49:23.

asked this ad because my mum has been my coach right the way through,

:49:24.:49:27.

I feel like I would not have got to this point had she not been there.

:49:28.:49:33.

There's always going to be that comparison, even more so now that I

:49:34.:49:39.

am doing the five K and the ten K. Have had so many difficult injuries.

:49:40.:49:46.

Always the year before the other big games. You are at your lowest moment

:49:47.:49:53.

but the thought of having such a huge Championship gives you that

:49:54.:50:05.

impetus. I had brilliant memories. Obviously then and last year. To go

:50:06.:50:16.

full circle and come back, I would never have believed that would

:50:17.:50:20.

happen. Never believe I would have two opportunities to be at the

:50:21.:50:25.

stadium. But we're here and I am excited for it to happen. We are as

:50:26.:50:32.

well. Just over three and a half hours. It has been difficult for her

:50:33.:50:39.

so just on the start line will be an achievement. She will be looking

:50:40.:50:46.

forward to it. When we look back at the shops, she has grown as an

:50:47.:50:52.

athlete. She has strengthened and worked hard on that. She has adapted

:50:53.:50:57.

her training in a way that has not been suited. Lizard would have

:50:58.:51:08.

trained with a lot of volume. Eilish need to bring a lot of crosstraining

:51:09.:51:12.

to make sure that her body does not break down and can stand up. She is

:51:13.:51:16.

still learning the event a little bit. She's still saving that little

:51:17.:51:25.

bit of energy. She's still coming into that. She still has a little

:51:26.:51:33.

bit in the tank. That is why she is finishing so strongly. Steve Cram is

:51:34.:51:41.

back with us. What do you think would be success? I've hardly seen

:51:42.:51:52.

anybody in the last few years who's been as committed as Eilish. She's

:51:53.:52:00.

so impressive. I don't know anyone who's had more injury problems or

:52:01.:52:07.

come at it from so many angles. Here she is. I think she will want to

:52:08.:52:21.

beat Laura Muir. Before these championships we would not think she

:52:22.:52:25.

would get much but she is incredibly fierce as a competitor and I think

:52:26.:52:35.

if Eilish finishes in the top eight it would be phenomenal. What about

:52:36.:52:46.

Laura Muir? That was her first five K of the season. What do we think we

:52:47.:52:59.

will see tonight? I hope Laura has had a chance to recover. Some of us

:53:00.:53:10.

were always a bit concerned about setting out the plan. Given a

:53:11.:53:16.

perfect preparation that might have been a good plan. She didn't miss

:53:17.:53:22.

loads. She didn't miss a medal in the 1500. The 5000 is hard. Ask Mo

:53:23.:53:35.

Farah. It is really difficult. It may be that the heats were more

:53:36.:53:42.

difficult than she expected. She had a couple of days to gather herself.

:53:43.:53:47.

This will be a tough final. There are very good Ethiopians in there,

:53:48.:53:54.

it is like when we looked at the 1500 metres. It is a tough task. I

:53:55.:53:58.

don't think we should expect too much from Laura tonight. It will be

:53:59.:54:02.

an eventful race. We will look forward to what we've got tonight.

:54:03.:54:08.

Not until we've heard from Calum Wilkinson. 41st in the 20 K race. I

:54:09.:54:16.

was that as an experience? Amazing. You've got to start with that crowd

:54:17.:54:19.

there. Amazing from the first to last. It is tough out there. It is

:54:20.:54:27.

really tough. Pleased to get round. But yeah, it was really tough out

:54:28.:54:36.

there. Great for the crowd to pull me through. From the moment you set

:54:37.:54:39.

foot on the course. Were you aware of how many British flags were out

:54:40.:54:47.

there? Yes, I thought it was good. It was three times as big when we

:54:48.:54:52.

were out there. It was so hard to not be like, greeting all the people

:54:53.:55:03.

that you knew. Amazing support. People like you and Tom Bosworth

:55:04.:55:08.

will take it to another level. What are you hoping to learn from this to

:55:09.:55:11.

take you forward into the senior ranks? I just wanted to get up in

:55:12.:55:17.

amongst it. That was the tactic from the off. These guys put on a show to

:55:18.:55:23.

the crowd. That was an insane time and it killed me like, I could stick

:55:24.:55:28.

around and I was out of the back door tried to cling on to was left.

:55:29.:55:32.

It's all about learning and getting the experience. It is a crowd I will

:55:33.:55:41.

not forget for a very long time. What do you hope to take from this

:55:42.:55:44.

experience that you can go into future years? It has been a real

:55:45.:55:54.

step up in class. They say nobody cares any more. You've got groped

:55:55.:56:00.

for the seniors. These guys, it is difficult when you race against

:56:01.:56:03.

them. I want to get in amongst them. They showed me they had to do it.

:56:04.:56:18.

Being there with the rest of the endurance team, not the result I

:56:19.:56:25.

would want. So much to learn. You've doubtless heard what has happened to

:56:26.:56:28.

Tom. Disqualified when he was in the lead. Comment on what he is brought

:56:29.:56:38.

to the sport? I'm gutted for him. It shows how sport is not a fairy tale

:56:39.:56:44.

this week. As much as we would love him to get a medal in front of the

:56:45.:56:47.

home crowd, racing is difficult. But everyone knows Tom Barber for

:56:48.:56:54.

racewalking. I get to work with him every day. What he's done, I can

:56:55.:56:59.

tell you there would not be a crowd like that without him. Big props to

:57:00.:57:13.

him. He's learning in the right direction. It might be the last day

:57:14.:57:18.

of the World Championships but is not the last day of the BBC's

:57:19.:57:21.

athletics coverage. That is the Grand Prix. Also to

:57:22.:57:42.

come... Then Match Of The Day two. Very

:57:43.:58:06.

quickly, highlight tonight? The men's 1500 metres. We are both

:58:07.:58:13.

really looking forward to that. I think there's going to be some good

:58:14.:58:17.

races tonight. The 5000 metres is going to be a good race. I'm

:58:18.:58:23.

crossing my fingers for Chris O'Hare in the 1500 metres. I think all of

:58:24.:58:29.

this. Make sure you're with us. I will be floating around the stadium.

:58:30.:58:34.

We will look forward to being in your company. Good night.
