Liz Nicky Stadium since the 1980 skunk -- in the Liz Nicky Stadium

:00:53.:00:58.

since the Moscow Olympics saw men with scores to settle since the last

:00:58.:01:00.

championships. Usain Bolt got underway in the 100m

:01:00.:01:05.

after disqualification two years ago and Mo Farah was hoping to play his

:01:06.:01:15.
:01:16.:01:16.

get out of jail free card. The story so far... Edna Kiplagat of Kenyon

:01:16.:01:23.

defends her world title in brilliant style. -- of tenure. Stepping

:01:23.:01:30.

through the gears. Christine Ohuruogu, comfortable qualification.

:01:31.:01:40.
:01:41.:01:43.

That was very impressive. Mo Farah is going to get there, this is world

:01:43.:01:51.

domination! So a reversal of the result in des gu with Mo Farah

:01:51.:01:54.

taking the win. We will look back at that later in the programme, but

:01:54.:01:59.

first, this is what is in store today. The men's hurdlers Rian

:01:59.:02:02.

action. David Oliver and Will Sharman, finally over his injury

:02:02.:02:10.

problems. We have the heats of the women's 1500m. Hannah England one

:02:10.:02:15.

Silver two years ago and Laura White is hopefully over her injury

:02:16.:02:25.
:02:26.:02:27.

problems from the trials. James begins the defence of his title. Can

:02:27.:02:32.

anyone stop him? LaShawn Merritt is probably the only one. And it is

:02:32.:02:37.

rent one of the women's 100m. Shelley Ann Fraser Price is up

:02:37.:02:47.
:02:47.:02:47.

against Carmelita Jeter, the against Carmelita Jeter, the

:02:47.:02:49.

defending champion. And here is the timings of what is coming up this

:02:49.:02:59.
:02:59.:03:24.

Sunday morning from me, from Colin, and not many other people, I think

:03:24.:03:27.

it is fair to say. I think the athletes are here, which is a

:03:27.:03:34.

relief. Let's look back to yesterday very briefly and Mo Farah's gold

:03:34.:03:38.

medal. That is what we were all hoping he would achieve and what was

:03:38.:03:44.

missing out of his bag, that world gold medal for the 10,000m. It was a

:03:44.:03:48.

tough race, though. He had to really compete, he drew on everything to

:03:48.:03:52.

take that victory but we all know the most important thing is the

:03:52.:03:56.

victory itself. That is the most interesting thing about that race,

:03:56.:04:00.

with four laps to go, Steve Cram in commentary said this could be a

:04:00.:04:06.

demonstration, he is in such good form, but Jeilan pushed him all the

:04:06.:04:13.

way. It was a close call. He will be relieved he was at the front at the

:04:13.:04:17.

right time. I don't know if he is able to summon some incredible turn

:04:17.:04:22.

of pace if Jeilan had been winning. For me, it was a relief run for him,

:04:22.:04:27.

but we have the 5,000 metres and that is where he is the defending

:04:27.:04:31.

champion, so we will be looking forward to that and seeing if he can

:04:31.:04:36.

hang onto that. The canyons talk about having a better chance in the

:04:36.:04:42.

5,000 metres and running some of the sting out of Mo Farah -- the

:04:42.:04:46.

Kenyans. Guess, compared to the Olympic Games, where he was far more

:04:46.:04:53.

dominant. This is unusual for Mo Farah, we don't usually see him

:04:53.:04:55.

looking around and searching and seeing where his opponents are, we

:04:55.:05:00.

seem to think he will just keep pulling away from everybody. So it

:05:00.:05:04.

was great to see and all of these opponents are tough. Let's not

:05:04.:05:07.

underestimate what he has achieved here, it has been a very tough,

:05:07.:05:16.

long, gruelling season for Mo. That European record for the 1500m, I'm

:05:16.:05:21.

wondering what that took out of him. He went faster than he has ever been

:05:21.:05:27.

before, faster than any other Brit has been before. Speed is another

:05:27.:05:32.

thing, when you are pushing your whole body past the limits it is

:05:32.:05:36.

usually used to, it can take a lot more out of you. Whether that has

:05:36.:05:39.

made a difference, I am not so sure, but I think we are all

:05:39.:05:44.

relieved that he has got that title. If you have any thoughts on

:05:44.:05:48.

Mo Farah and what he did yesterday, on the screen there, contact us at

:05:48.:05:55.

BBC sport. First up on track today is the men's decathlon high

:05:56.:05:59.

hurdles. Before we get to that race, those heats, let's look back

:05:59.:06:08.

race, those heats, let's look back for the first event of the

:06:08.:06:13.

heptathlon, the 100m. All eyes were on lane six, Ashton Eaton, the world

:06:13.:06:18.

record-holder. And it was Ashton Eaton who sped away. Trey Hardee,

:06:18.:06:25.

three lanes inside him, was the defending champion, but Ashton Eaton

:06:25.:06:28.

showed everybody a clean pair of heels, followed by David Warner of

:06:28.:06:36.

Canada. Then we were onto the long jump. Michael Schrader of Germany,

:06:36.:06:40.

he was figured to medal in this decathlon and certainly showed a

:06:40.:06:46.

clean pair of heels to everybody in the long jump. Again, a score of

:06:46.:06:50.

over 1,000 points. When it came to the shot put, Ashton Eaton was way

:06:50.:06:56.

below par, but 14.39 kept the American at the top. The high jump,

:06:56.:07:00.

it was Gunnar Nixon, his younger team-mate from the United States,

:07:00.:07:05.

just 20 years old and a former world champion at 2.4 teen metres, which

:07:05.:07:12.

took into the top the leaderboard. At the other end of the scale, Trey

:07:12.:07:16.

Hardee had terrible problems. This was his opening height, his third

:07:16.:07:20.

attempt and he failed it and the American would not defend his title

:07:20.:07:24.

successfully, he was out that the caps on. Then it was the final event

:07:24.:07:31.

they want, the gruelling 400m and a to show what a class athlete Ashton

:07:31.:07:38.

Eaton is -- and a chance. Last year in London, he broke the world

:07:38.:07:42.

record, over 9,000 points. He was aiming for a time here which would

:07:42.:07:45.

take him back into the lead. A lead which he only relinquished after the

:07:46.:07:53.

high jump, clearing 1.92. Not a good effort for the young American, but

:07:53.:07:57.

this event was absolutely superb. By the time he came into the home

:07:57.:08:00.

straight, he was miles ahead of anyone else. There was only

:08:00.:08:06.

Behrenbruch of Germany and Damian Warner of Canada who were trying to

:08:06.:08:12.

live with him, but Ashton Eaton sped away from everybody, winning in

:08:12.:08:16.

46:02. Another 1,000 points score and another visit to the top of the

:08:16.:08:21.

leaderboard. Yes, not a bad first day for Ashton

:08:21.:08:26.

Eaton, he will be thinking he will be becoming world champion. We will

:08:26.:08:29.

get out now for the first heat and it is good morning to Steve Cram,

:08:29.:08:39.
:08:39.:08:40.

Good morning and welcome to the second day of the decathlon and the

:08:40.:08:43.

first event is of course the 110 metres hurdles. Nobody in this

:08:43.:08:48.

line-up with a great chance of challenging for the medals, but the

:08:48.:08:53.

Arnel Suarez, the bronze medallist at the last two Olympic Games, is

:08:53.:09:03.
:09:03.:09:18.

in the third lane. Suarez trying to come through. And taking this very

:09:18.:09:27.

impressively is Mayer. Look at the time. It looked impressive, but it

:09:27.:09:34.

wasn't necessarily. Mayer was the first to rise, the former world

:09:34.:09:41.

youth and world junior champion, the 21-year-old. This will be the

:09:41.:09:51.
:09:51.:09:52.

slowest of the four heats. Mayer takes the victory. Confirmation of

:09:52.:10:02.
:10:02.:10:03.

that. They have rounded down for Kevin Mayer. Suarez, a couple of

:10:03.:10:06.

bronze medals, I mentioned, but not in that kind of form and won't be

:10:06.:10:16.
:10:16.:10:16.

this year. -- won't be challenging this year.

:10:17.:10:20.

So we move onto heat two, a fascinating confrontation between

:10:20.:10:27.

the world's all-round athlete, that is Eduard Mikhan, a very solid

:10:27.:10:31.

performer, good performances yesterday, lying in 14th place

:10:31.:10:38.

overall. 10.97 he started off with in the 100m yesterday. And his other

:10:38.:10:46.

very best performance was his 400m, the last event, 48 .80. But nobody

:10:46.:10:56.
:10:56.:11:13.

can live with the pace of Ashton the man that we saw earlier, Eduard

:11:13.:11:19.

Mikhan. This is a Ushiro, who goes in lane three. Lying in 20 Seventh

:11:19.:11:28.

Place at the moment -- 20 Seventh Place. Kame Ali of Madagascar, 14.61

:11:28.:11:35.

is his lifetime best. Van der Plaetsen is ranked 13th at the

:11:35.:11:39.

moment after day one. He finished off yesterday with 49 seconds in the

:11:39.:11:49.
:11:49.:11:52.

400m. Marcus Nilsson of Sweden, lying in 20 Sixth Place. -- 26th

:11:52.:11:56.

place. These guys battling against themselves, not necessarily their

:11:56.:12:00.

fellow competitors. Eduard Mikhan has a chance of moving into the top

:12:00.:12:10.

ten if he can repeat his lifetime best performance. And Uibo, just 18

:12:10.:12:18.

years old. He had a cracking high jump yesterday, to .11 metres. --

:12:18.:12:25.

2.11. Van der Plaetsen, on paper, one of the better hurdlers, but

:12:25.:12:34.

Eduard Mikhan is the best. Ingmar Vos is a very solid performer. Just

:12:35.:12:41.

having over at the scoring tables, if you wanted to score over 1,000

:12:41.:12:51.
:12:51.:12:53.

points, you have got to run under 13.8. Well, the clock was blowing

:12:53.:12:57.

away a few cobwebs, it gave us a time originally outside of 15

:12:57.:13:07.
:13:07.:13:19.

seconds before it was adjusted to 14 did Mikhan. Van der Plaetsen

:13:19.:13:25.

beginning to gain some ground. The Belgian flying. Van der Plaetsen

:13:25.:13:31.

WinZip, Mikhan in second place, Nilsson in third. Slower than the

:13:31.:13:41.

first heat. -- van der Plaetsen winds it. We have a turn of page

:13:41.:13:48.

here on the scoring tables. 886 points, but a bit of fortune for van

:13:48.:13:52.

der Plaetsen. He was under pressure, didn't get away to a

:13:52.:13:57.

particularly good start. It was the Dutchman Ingmar Bosse, who ran a pro

:13:57.:14:06.

400m last night and continued that poor form -- Ingmar Vos. Colin

:14:06.:14:10.

Jackson will have some sympathy for the Dutchman, he stumbled, and van

:14:10.:14:16.

der Plaetsen came storming through the victory. So van der Plaetsen

:14:16.:14:24.

will gain confidence from that run. Lying in 13th position. Wasn't a

:14:24.:14:27.

particularly good time, but he may gain a couple of places by the end

:14:27.:14:37.
:14:37.:14:40.

of this event. JONATHAN EDWARDS: It is a hard

:14:40.:14:43.

school, no sympathy from Colin school, no sympathy from Colin

:14:43.:14:47.

Jackson! I did have sympathy for the fact that he got up early in the

:14:47.:14:51.

morning to do that performance. Basically, he caught his trailing

:14:51.:14:54.

leg and it caused a bit of a rotation and it took him off

:14:54.:14:58.

balance. When you only have three balance. When you only have three

:14:58.:15:01.

strides until the barrier, that will cause you a problem. He exploded out

:15:01.:15:06.

of the blocks and settled into his rhythm. He clattered one of the

:15:06.:15:09.

middle hurdles, somewhere around four, but don't worry about that,

:15:09.:15:13.

because he is already at a good speed so he can afford to drag it

:15:13.:15:18.

down. It is this hurdle, he comes off it badly and it catches his

:15:18.:15:22.

trail leg, causing him to have a rotation and he ends up falling away

:15:22.:15:25.

from the barrier and when you only have three strides to get to the

:15:25.:15:31.

next one, it is hell. I think the next one, it is hell. I think the

:15:31.:15:37.

accolade from looks like he was getting lactic acid. Going nicely

:15:37.:15:41.

then started to fall apart. They have had a long day yesterday in the

:15:41.:15:47.

heat and then they have to get back up. The most explosive of events,

:15:47.:15:51.

probably. It is a difficult one to start with, because they are

:15:51.:15:57.

barriers, so it is an awful way to do that. Yet you can imagine how

:15:57.:16:01.

frustrated he will be, he has done for five events, has a really good

:16:01.:16:10.

start and that is what happens. So that is his Championships over.

:16:10.:16:14.

terms of the amount of hurdling these athletes would do, how would

:16:14.:16:21.

they apportion that time? We're looking at Ashton Eaton

:16:21.:16:24.

stretching, he is a very good jumper, a very competent hurdler,

:16:24.:16:31.

and he is quite good technically, as well. If you are a natural jumper

:16:31.:16:36.

you can hone your technique over these barriers. These athletes are

:16:36.:16:41.

big, powerful and strong. Long legs help with this. They don't need to

:16:41.:16:45.

worry about the technical aspect because they are so strong they can

:16:45.:16:51.

get over it, they can boulder the way through it, but you need to have

:16:51.:16:58.

some extra finesse. Because the brutes, they don't have that.

:16:58.:17:05.

Ashton -- Ashton Eaton has strength, if you was competing

:17:05.:17:13.

against Daley Thompson, who is a strength based athlete... Yes, he is

:17:13.:17:16.

tall, so the hurdles lick small to him.

:17:16.:17:20.

Someone like Daley Thompson who had very short legs, he spent a lot of

:17:20.:17:26.

time running and jumping and not being beautifully flawless.

:17:26.:17:34.

The athletes are out for the third heat, this is my favourite named

:17:34.:17:44.
:17:44.:17:46.

Yes, Gunnar Nixon from Oklahoma, he has a chance, he is lying second at

:17:46.:17:55.

the moment. He is looking to set his best on this big stage. He does have

:17:55.:18:01.

a chance if he can go on and replicate that kind of form on his

:18:01.:18:11.
:18:11.:18:13.

second day. He has quite a weak pole vault, Gunnar Nixon, several events

:18:13.:18:17.

on this second day. There are medal contenders in this heat. Pascal

:18:17.:18:27.
:18:27.:18:30.

Beren Brooke -- Behrenbruch, the German, and also Coertzen, the South

:18:30.:18:37.

African. He does have a good second day,

:18:37.:18:41.

Behrenbruch, we have predictions based on personal bests on this

:18:41.:18:46.

second day. If all athletes performed according to the best in

:18:46.:18:49.

the events, Behrenbruch would finish in bronze medal position, lying

:18:49.:18:59.

seventh at the moment. There is Pascal Behrenbruch. He has the

:18:59.:19:05.

quickest time in this line-up in the hurdles. Just a shade outside 14

:19:05.:19:09.

seconds. It would be nice if he could manage a personal best and

:19:09.:19:19.
:19:19.:19:20.

sneak below 14. You think of the German challenges in the decathlon

:19:20.:19:30.

over the years. Ilya Shkurenev taking most of the applause from the

:19:30.:19:40.
:19:40.:19:50.

Estonia. Coertzen set to personal bests yesterday. That was in the

:19:50.:20:00.
:20:00.:20:07.

high jump and the 400m macro. -- the 400m. Queren alongside him, a modest

:20:07.:20:17.
:20:17.:20:20.

hurdler. Rietveld smiling away, years 25th in the standings. And

:20:20.:20:30.
:20:30.:20:32.

there is Gunnar Nixon. -- he is 24. -- 25th. He came into the

:20:32.:20:35.

championship is very much of the third of American athlete, possibly

:20:35.:20:40.

force, Ashton Eaton, Trey Hardee, Trey Hardee who is out, struggling

:20:40.:20:45.

with injury, Ashton Eaton is out in front at the moment, but Gunnar

:20:45.:20:53.

Nixon is hot on his heels. Again, he needs to improve. He is the slowest

:20:53.:21:01.

in this field in personal-bests. 14.51 is the best he has mastered

:21:01.:21:06.

over the years. Not too many years yet, he is still just 20.

:21:06.:21:16.
:21:16.:21:41.

before the starter got them to stand The muttering that I heard had

:21:41.:21:50.

something to do with Lane five, which is Coertzen, the South

:21:50.:21:54.

African. What the problem was I am not sure. Certainly there will be a

:21:54.:22:00.

bit of misunderstanding because of the language barriers here. But

:22:00.:22:04.

Coertzen is a very experienced athlete, a former record-holder.

:22:04.:22:08.

That means there has been a warning for everyone, that green card being

:22:08.:22:13.

what a class, but nobody is accused of false start or anything like

:22:13.:22:20.

that. -- being walked across. Back again to getting themselves

:22:20.:22:30.
:22:30.:22:51.

moment, with a good second day he fears. And Behrenbruch on the

:22:51.:23:01.
:23:01.:23:18.

twitch there that got Querin going, as well.

:23:18.:23:25.

The man with the number five on his thigh, and he set off with the man

:23:25.:23:31.

outside him, as well. We will see the officials coming across and

:23:31.:23:34.

presumably they are going to show another warning card. That should be

:23:34.:23:44.
:23:44.:23:50.

classified as us -- a false start against Coertzen.

:23:50.:23:55.

Just to explain the false start rule, in the decathlon that is

:23:55.:24:05.
:24:05.:24:12.

Then you are, there is no language barrier, the official speaking very

:24:12.:24:16.

good English indeed and saying the first problem was warning to

:24:16.:24:26.
:24:26.:24:33.

everyone, and that looked as though it was against Lane four. Pahapill,

:24:34.:24:37.

a very experienced athlete. That surprised me, because it was

:24:38.:24:43.

Coertzen who was moving on the blocks. He has maybe had too much

:24:43.:24:53.
:24:53.:24:53.

coffee this morning. Rietveld is howling away again, ringing around

:24:53.:25:03.
:25:03.:25:12.

the stadium. Third time of asking, Behrenbruch on the inside. Also

:25:12.:25:18.

going well as Coertzen, Rietveld is trying to come through. But Coertzen

:25:19.:25:26.

will take it, the time, 14.31. Outside his personal best, but a

:25:26.:25:30.

decent enough run again for the man lying in eighth place at the moment.

:25:30.:25:35.

He finished yesterday with a couple of personal-bests and he came

:25:35.:25:43.

through well here. A fairly even race, but it was the South African.

:25:43.:25:47.

Rietveld, as well, a definite -- disappointing run from Pascal

:25:47.:25:52.

Behrenbruch, he would have expected more than that. His medal hopes may

:25:52.:25:58.

have taken a blow here in the high hurdles. Dental -- Coertzen not the

:25:58.:26:01.

tallest of athletes but floated over the barriers and came through in

:26:01.:26:11.
:26:11.:26:17.

addition to enough time. -- a decent Ashton Eaton is in heat for hoping

:26:17.:26:21.

to add the world title to his Olympic title, something Daley

:26:21.:26:31.
:26:31.:26:34.

Thompson did in the first World Thomson coming away on the near

:26:34.:26:39.

side, and he is holding up, Thompson leading by a long margin, 10.62.

:26:39.:26:44.

That is a good start for Daley Thompson.

:26:44.:26:50.

That is better, what a response from the man!

:26:50.:27:00.
:27:00.:27:01.

Yes, that is an enormous shot for Daley Thompson storming through

:27:01.:27:07.

200m, and now it is all about the clock. Thomson driving hard but they

:27:07.:27:12.

are catching him and he is tiring as they go to the line. Nicklaus is

:27:12.:27:22.
:27:22.:27:52.

going through, Thompson, Nicklaus, Thompson dragging himself out to the

:27:52.:28:02.
:28:02.:28:05.

line and he has done enough. There And Daley Thompson would have told

:28:05.:28:11.

you it was never it -- in doubt from the first event on day one! He would

:28:11.:28:15.

have said that, absolutely, but it was brilliant to watch that. I was

:28:15.:28:19.

lucky enough to spend many days training with him and it was all

:28:19.:28:23.

about fun, but with that trying to focus on the right things to improve

:28:23.:28:30.

you. It was a brilliant education. He used to play games with his great

:28:30.:28:35.

rival from west Germany and he always had that little bit extra.

:28:35.:28:40.

He always managed to do that, he could always find that magical way

:28:40.:28:48.

of citing people out or psyching people up. He has that skill.

:28:48.:28:53.

We talk about the technical work decathletes do and clearly Daley

:28:53.:28:59.

Thompson did no work on his high jump. Nor, it was just a random

:28:59.:29:07.

thing, just get on the run and jump. But Ashton Eaton, over 9000 points,

:29:07.:29:13.

the world record-holder, he goes in the world record-holder, he goes in

:29:13.:29:15.

in fourth. He is certainly the best hurdler on

:29:15.:29:21.

display today, a truly remarkable performance for a multi-event. Daley

:29:21.:29:28.

Thompson, when he won his world title, 14.37 he ran in pretty

:29:28.:29:36.

terrifying conditions, very windy on that day. There is Eelco

:29:37.:29:45.

Sintnicolaas, lying in fifth place overall overnight. And Artem

:29:45.:29:50.

Lukyanenko, the very good Russian, 14 seconds dead. We could see some

:29:50.:29:57.

fireworks here in this life -- last heat of the decathlon. Damian Warner

:29:57.:30:06.

is just outside of the medals, he is down on a third place. Rico

:30:06.:30:13.

Freimuth, but everyone will be watching Ashton Eaton after that

:30:13.:30:20.

Bristol -- blistering run over the track yesterday evening. The fastest

:30:20.:30:24.

hurdles ever in World Championship history, 13.55. There is the

:30:25.:30:34.
:30:35.:30:46.

date two the way he finished off yesterday evening? He ran out of his

:30:46.:30:53.

skin, 46.02. It is very rare that decathletes run that fast in 400

:30:53.:31:03.
:31:03.:31:06.

metre running in a decathlon. The world record 13.47. That was way

:31:06.:31:16.
:31:16.:31:20.

He clatters hurdle two, but he is away, chased by Damian Warner.

:31:20.:31:25.

Taking things easy over the last few hurdles but Ashton Eaton comes away.

:31:25.:31:30.

Freimuth came into second place. A modest run for the American blood 13

:31:31.:31:40.
:31:41.:31:44.

points 92 is a good score -- but 13 points 92. 985 points. He is being

:31:44.:31:48.

chased by Damian Warner, who may have moved up into third place after

:31:48.:31:52.

that run, he was being challenged by the big fella outside him, Rico

:31:52.:31:58.

Freimuth of Germany. Ashton Eaton may be just coasted over the second

:31:58.:32:02.

half of that race. He was in trouble after the second hurdle, he

:32:02.:32:07.

clattered that one, caught it with his trail leg, was in danger of

:32:07.:32:10.

being caught off balance, but it looked pretty smooth over the rest

:32:10.:32:15.

of the race. Damian Warner beginning to fade and Freimuth coming on

:32:15.:32:25.

strong. Ashton Eaton still the top of the pile.

:32:25.:32:28.

I think for Ashton Eaton, it is about safely negotiating things,

:32:28.:32:32.

because the danger for him in the decathlon, the only thing that can

:32:33.:32:38.

really go wrong, as he clattered the second hurdle, he could do a no

:32:38.:32:42.

jump, he could foul or become a cropper on the hurdles, so to get

:32:42.:32:47.

through safely was the main thing because the speed is a fairly modest

:32:47.:32:50.

time for him, but still more than good enough and will certainly

:32:50.:32:55.

extend his lead. It is about avoiding potential pitfalls and

:32:55.:33:05.
:33:05.:33:23.

Eaton. Another superb performance by the world record-holder. Damian

:33:23.:33:30.

Warner of Canada hasn't done his chances any harm at all.

:33:30.:33:34.

Mister Jackson has got this internal Mister Jackson has got this internal

:33:34.:33:38.

high hurdlers' clock, because he looked at that and said it was

:33:38.:33:43.

wrong. You could see it was swifter wrong. You could see it was swifter

:33:43.:33:46.

than the time they gave initially. When you look at the strength of

:33:46.:33:51.

this field, that was about right. Ashton Eaton got out ready well, he

:33:51.:33:56.

was aggressive, just kept focused. He banged into the second hurdle,

:33:56.:34:00.

didn't make much difference. It is because he is happy, it won't make

:34:00.:34:04.

that much difference early on. But he has this pitter patter shuffle

:34:04.:34:07.

strike in between the stride strike in between the stride

:34:07.:34:11.

pattern, which is absolutely fine, because you sense it gives him a

:34:11.:34:14.

little bit more control over the barriers, it gives him time to see

:34:14.:34:18.

the hurdles as he approaches them and it is something you will do when

:34:18.:34:24.

you don't spend that much time doing the event. He ran a decent hurdles.

:34:24.:34:27.

A little unfair to the decathlon high hurdlers, because we are going

:34:27.:34:33.

straight to the men's high hurdlers. First, let's hear from the world

:34:33.:34:43.
:34:43.:34:48.

record-holder and Olympic champion year is Moscow. I don't have a world

:34:48.:34:54.

championship. I'd I have our world indoor championship and Olympic

:34:54.:35:02.

golds are the only thing missing is a world outdoor championship. -- and

:35:02.:35:05.

soap. The moment when I crossed that line, knowing that the relief of

:35:05.:35:10.

being Olympic champion, knowing that I had won it, it was just amazing. I

:35:10.:35:14.

always build off of energy and the setting, I always look at every

:35:14.:35:20.

meeting, and I look at it and ask what I ran last year and can I be

:35:20.:35:24.

better than I was the previous year. I think I am up for the

:35:24.:35:28.

challenge. I'm not saying I will break the world record but I would

:35:28.:35:32.

like to run under 13 because I feel like nobody has done it this year

:35:32.:35:36.

and somebody has to do it and who else could do it but me? Goodness

:35:36.:35:43.

me, he is back with a bang. With old people making their way out and new

:35:43.:35:48.

people making their way in, they are all great athletes, there is a lot

:35:48.:35:52.

of the young athlete coming up and running fast, so I think that the

:35:52.:35:57.

race will still be just as exciting. Setting goals is a great way to keep

:35:57.:36:06.

athletes motivated and running under 13 is obviously a motivator. I need

:36:06.:36:12.

to run five more to run the most sub 13s that anybody on the planet has

:36:12.:36:16.

ever run, so hopefully I will get them this year.

:36:16.:36:20.

Colin, I think it is fair to say that at the last year and the

:36:20.:36:23.

fireworks of Aries Merritt, this year has not been a vintage year for

:36:23.:36:29.

hurdling. No, there has been a lot of toing and froing when it comes to

:36:29.:36:32.

the world leading mark and a lot of the top athletes have spent time on

:36:32.:36:39.

the physio's bench. So a lot of time gathering themselves, putting

:36:39.:36:42.

themselves back through their paces and is trying to establish

:36:42.:36:45.

themselves. I always say it is about the hurdles, you have to get into a

:36:45.:36:50.

rhythm, a group of running very quickly. Last year, Aries was in

:36:50.:36:54.

that group, always around that 13 second mark without a struggle. This

:36:54.:36:59.

year, he has not found that initial rhythm, and that is why he has

:36:59.:37:03.

struggled. He pushes and works a little too hard and it causes him

:37:03.:37:10.

problems. He fail at London because he was chasing the fast time. --

:37:10.:37:15.

failed. Nobody has run under 13 seconds this season. It is a tough

:37:15.:37:23.

thing to do, manager for some a lot of top athlete -- mind you, a lot of

:37:23.:37:28.

athletes can't do it. It just proves how difficult it is, there are very

:37:28.:37:33.

talented athletes out there and they are striving to do that. Is Aries

:37:33.:37:39.

Merritt trying to play catch-up too quickly. He fell in London, trying

:37:39.:37:44.

to run too quickly, maybe? When you have set your own level in your

:37:44.:37:48.

mind, and you are not achieving it, it becomes a burden for you and you

:37:48.:37:51.

start to run tight and I think that is what Aries is doing, struggling

:37:51.:37:56.

to find that real niche performance that is going to be needed out there

:37:56.:38:00.

today to get through, because you need to get into your rhythm. And he

:38:00.:38:04.

will definitely needed in the final, because it is not one-way traffic.

:38:04.:38:13.

-- needed. You cannot go out and job it like the 100m because you have do

:38:13.:38:16.

clear the barriers. And you have to get used to running the track well.

:38:16.:38:20.

It will be a tough call and we are looking at the home favourite as

:38:20.:38:29.

well, Shevchenko off, I would say to everybody, watch out for him --

:38:29.:38:35.

Shebenkov. You like the way he runs. He is a strong and confident athlete

:38:35.:38:39.

and doesn't get intimidated by the world leaders and that will play

:38:39.:38:47.

well for him come the final. Heat one involves Jason Richardson, the

:38:47.:38:49.

one involves Jason Richardson, the defending world Steve Cram is

:38:49.:38:55.

calling this one. STEVE CRAM: Jason Richardson will be

:38:55.:38:59.

nervous, as you would be going into any championships as the defending

:38:59.:39:02.

champion. And the man who has had his own problems this year, looking

:39:02.:39:07.

along the line and he knows there are plenty in this race who will

:39:07.:39:12.

give him something to think about. The first three will go through and

:39:12.:39:22.
:39:22.:39:49.

the four fastest losers are into the to talk about Ryan Brathwaite, to

:39:49.:39:53.

surprise world champions, if you like. That is the script that the

:39:53.:39:58.

110m hurdles can follow at major championships. Parchment is in

:39:59.:40:05.

pretty good form this year, a new personal best. Braithwaite was the

:40:05.:40:13.

surprise of 2009. Richardson, if you can remember what was happening,

:40:13.:40:17.

there was chaos around him, but he came through to win the world title,

:40:17.:40:22.

but hasn't been at his best this year either. Watch out for Thomas in

:40:22.:40:32.
:40:32.:40:41.

start. Richardson is right there with him. Parchment is not doing so

:40:41.:40:47.

well. Richardson comes through. Shabanov of Brescia this site. It

:40:47.:40:51.

will be tight on the line but Richardson gets it, Shabanov and

:40:51.:41:01.
:41:01.:41:02.

maybe Brathwaite are the three. That close was, very, very close.

:41:03.:41:07.

Richardson, after an OK start, he wasn't fazed by Thomas getting away

:41:07.:41:10.

so well alongside him, he looked as though he was going to get away and

:41:11.:41:16.

then faded a little. They all started to close him down, but in

:41:16.:41:23.

the end, he will be delighted to get through. Colin?

:41:23.:41:29.

COLIN JACKSON: There was a lot of action all over the place, a lot

:41:29.:41:32.

going on, and messy race, but the important thing for Richardson was

:41:32.:41:37.

he got through cleanly and smoothly. This will be interesting, with the

:41:37.:41:41.

semifinal, because there will be a lot of pressure both left and right.

:41:41.:41:46.

Let's watch him head on. Seven strident approach, works hard into

:41:46.:41:52.

the barrier but takes it nice and cleanly and focused already. Focused

:41:53.:41:59.

on the hurdle, works offered with the Trail Lake. Gathers himself,

:41:59.:42:04.

tries not to make any errors -- works off it with the Trail Lake.

:42:04.:42:08.

These hurdles are coming very quickly indeed can sometimes you can

:42:08.:42:14.

guide them, they can take a bit of speed of your performance. -- off

:42:14.:42:20.

your performance. But not Jason. He staggered off the final one little

:42:20.:42:27.

bit but the victory is what matters. That is what is up on the

:42:27.:42:30.

scoreboard, it is an unofficial but looks right. Shabanov with the

:42:30.:42:39.

seasons best and Brathwaite getting ahead of Thomas by 100th of a

:42:39.:42:46.

second. Certainly competitive. The next heat

:42:46.:42:50.

features Will Sharman of Great Britain. The burst onto the scene

:42:50.:42:56.

four years ago, but it has been a struggle since then and wasn't

:42:56.:43:00.

selected for London 2012. But he is here and in great form and has been

:43:00.:43:10.
:43:10.:43:10.

First of all, I want to remind you of something you said, that you get

:43:10.:43:16.

better as the season goes on and it has been proved, you get a graduate

:43:16.:43:22.

have been fantastic. Yes, I am looking really forward to Moscow. I

:43:22.:43:27.

am in better form than I have been for any World Championships before.

:43:27.:43:30.

A confidence boosting run at the Anniversary Games, the time and

:43:30.:43:37.

everything, what does it mean to you? That was massive. Missing last

:43:37.:43:41.

year, the Olympic Games, through injury, it was my Olympics. I did it

:43:41.:43:46.

in front of 60,000 British people who cared, who were interested in

:43:46.:43:49.

how British athletes were doing, and I couldn't have asked to have

:43:49.:43:53.

performed on a better stage. That is what I thrive on and I will be

:43:53.:43:58.

looking forward to that same kind of atmosphere in Moscow. It is going to

:43:58.:44:01.

be difficult. Yes, I am in good contention for good things, however

:44:01.:44:10.

everyone is going there like-minded and it is going to be a tough fight.

:44:10.:44:15.

I go into these championships with the confidence of having posted a

:44:15.:44:18.

faster time. Other athletes are going to be aware of the kind of

:44:18.:44:25.

form I am in and it is going to make them fear me. However, I can't rest

:44:25.:44:31.

on my laurels, because my mentality at a World Championships is it

:44:32.:44:35.

doesn't matter who you are, what you have done before, it is a

:44:35.:44:40.

competition of equal men and the slate is wiped clean and we begin

:44:40.:44:46.

from here. Despite his struggles, he has made

:44:46.:44:50.

the last two World Championships finals, fourth in Berlin and fifth

:44:50.:44:57.

in Daegu. An athlete whose best we feel is still ahead. Yes, he has got

:44:57.:45:03.

to get into that groove again, he has always been chasing it. He never

:45:03.:45:05.

arrives at the championships always perfect but this year he seems to

:45:05.:45:10.

have got it right and I think he is in a good place in his mind. He is

:45:10.:45:13.

confident and his technique is holding up. So without putting the

:45:13.:45:17.

kiss of death on him, when it comes to the real deal and the pressure of

:45:17.:45:21.

the situation, because he is so good technically, he will always be there

:45:21.:45:24.

or thereabouts. And he says the athletes will have watched his races

:45:24.:45:30.

and will know he makes mistakes very rarely, and that is a real asset.

:45:30.:45:34.

Certainly the back end when you are chasing those medals. If he gets

:45:34.:45:41.

close to his personal best, he is not far off. In terms of the quality

:45:41.:45:46.

he is up against, not as competitive as the first heat. Not quite, but

:45:46.:45:50.

Langat is the person we will be watching, because he is capable of

:45:50.:45:54.

running very quickly indeed. And Wilson, the surprise US champion, is

:45:54.:46:00.

also in this race. He is one of those people who I have thought has

:46:00.:46:04.

always been very underrated, because sometimes it doesn't produce good

:46:04.:46:06.

performances when it matters but he went to the US championships this

:46:06.:46:16.
:46:16.:46:29.

year and won the title and we know how tough it is there. Any issues

:46:29.:46:38.

with lean Ms Gormley -- with Lane nine?

:46:38.:46:44.

No, no issues, no panic whatsoever. After the disappointment of not

:46:44.:46:52.

going to London last year, Will is a man of ambition, isn't he?

:46:52.:46:57.

Yes, but if he can hold himself together, not let the occasion get

:46:57.:47:07.
:47:07.:47:08.

to, he can do well. Steve, it is all yours.

:47:08.:47:12.

Well, Will Sharman is looking at risk. He is moving around a fair

:47:12.:47:16.

bit. This is a race we are all expecting good things from him,

:47:16.:47:20.

expecting good things from him, probably an ideal heat for him.

:47:20.:47:25.

Yes, he will be quite pleased with the draw. He has Ryan Wilson

:47:25.:47:31.

alongside him, but it is quite a modest line-up. Pascal

:47:31.:47:36.

Martinot-Lagarde, the youngest brother of Thomas. Wenjun Xie of

:47:36.:47:43.

China, as well. There is Pascal Martinot-Lagarde. He is perhaps the

:47:43.:47:53.
:47:53.:47:55.

Beagle -- bigger talent. He has run in 13.12 this season. A former world

:47:55.:48:04.

Jim Prean -- junior champion. There is Wenjun Xie, going well this

:48:04.:48:13.

season. And Ryan Wilson is in lane eight. He is US champion this year

:48:13.:48:23.
:48:23.:48:24.

at the eighth attempt, he is 32 now. He is alongside Sharman. He must

:48:24.:48:27.

feel comfortable in this environment in the World Championships, it has

:48:27.:48:36.

been good to him. Fourth in Bellingham, fifth in Daegu. Second

:48:36.:48:46.
:48:46.:48:46.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 64 seconds

:48:46.:49:50.

here. It is Ryan Wilson at the moment and Wayne C Davis comes

:49:50.:49:54.

through to take it, Sharman just about getting there. Well, it is

:49:54.:50:00.

hard work, but successful work in the end for Will Sharman. A little

:50:00.:50:10.
:50:10.:50:10.

bit of a shake of the head. More to come from me, he says, I hope.

:50:10.:50:14.

Certainly the man alongside him, Ryan Wilson, he was a good man to

:50:14.:50:21.

measure himself against, Steve. Yes, he actually got out better than

:50:21.:50:27.

Wilson. Wilson comes back at the end, he had to.

:50:27.:50:29.

Disappointing, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde on the fireside.

:50:29.:50:34.

Given his form, we thought he would qualify easily but it was a bit of a

:50:34.:50:38.

struggle and he is perhaps fortunate the Frenchman on the fireside did

:50:38.:50:43.

not perform at all, to be honest, because he has looked to be

:50:43.:50:49.

improving. -- the Frenchman on the far side. But Will is full of

:50:49.:50:53.

confidence. He has got through safely and he now has to focus on

:50:53.:51:02.

the semifinal, where he will have to be better than that.

:51:02.:51:12.
:51:12.:51:12.

This is the head honour of Sharman. -- the head on Sharman. He must have

:51:12.:51:16.

felt Wilson was easing away from them alongside him. He maintained

:51:16.:51:25.

his composure, it was a clean enough run. He said, as he knocks down the

:51:25.:51:32.

barrier! I am sure we will hear from him shortly, he will feel there is

:51:32.:51:36.

more to come. The key thing is to get through, of course, and he did

:51:36.:51:42.

that. The semifinals take place tomorrow, and he knows he will be

:51:42.:51:48.

easier. Let us just confirmed that for you. -- he knows he will be

:51:48.:51:55.

there. Wayne Davies, from Trinidad and Tobago, coming second and

:51:55.:52:02.

and Tobago, coming second and William Sharman in 13.51.

:52:02.:52:06.

People say that you get quicker as the championship goes on, today is

:52:06.:52:10.

about getting safely through and you have done that. I am so relieved,

:52:10.:52:14.

that is the mundane part over with, tomorrow is when the boys get rough

:52:15.:52:19.

and ready. I am really looking forward to a semifinal, all I need

:52:19.:52:24.

is a good night's sleep. How tough is it to get up so early

:52:24.:52:32.

in the morning and do all the prep? You either fall into one of two

:52:32.:52:36.

categories, where you perform best early morning, I am not one of them.

:52:36.:52:41.

For me, I was up at 5am. I was probably up every hour last night

:52:41.:52:45.

thinking, is it time to race yet? It is difficult for me, early in the

:52:45.:52:50.

morning. I think that is my fastest ever World Championships opening

:52:50.:52:55.

round. There have been some surprises already. I put myself

:52:55.:52:59.

through a good warm up with Malcolm Arnold, I am in great shape, my

:52:59.:53:03.

coach put me through a great training programme, it is just being

:53:03.:53:08.

in it and I am thankful to be through to the next round. That

:53:08.:53:14.

sounds great, you put it in a great perspective as always, good -- good

:53:14.:53:24.

They are going to get rough and ready tomorrow, Colin. You talked

:53:24.:53:31.

about the French guy, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde.

:53:31.:53:35.

Scratch my head a lot after the first heat, because I thought that

:53:35.:53:42.

was a little bit quick, I was surprised that Hansle Parchment

:53:42.:53:45.

struggled. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde is expected to run much better than

:53:45.:53:51.

that, 13.12 he achieved at the Diamond League. I expected him to be

:53:51.:53:59.

more explosive than that, but he is out of this race really early. It

:54:00.:54:03.

really started right at the very beginning of his race, Wilson. As he

:54:04.:54:07.

pushed out of the blocks he took one, Wilson. As he pushed out of the

:54:07.:54:11.

blocks he took one, two, a little bit, so he did not prepare for the

:54:11.:54:15.

first barrier. If you watch it one, two, three, and he sinks. He does

:54:16.:54:24.

not stand up correctly and that cost him on the first hurdle. As he did

:54:24.:54:29.

that, Ryan Wilson went away from him. It put you under pressure, then

:54:29.:54:33.

he clatters a hard all around here, which you don't want to do because

:54:33.:54:37.

that pulls you back. Then he can settle down and be more fluent,

:54:37.:54:42.

because he is in that groove and technical rhythm of his. Once you

:54:42.:54:48.

lose the momentum and the first hurdle it is difficult to find it

:54:48.:54:52.

again because there are so few hurdles.

:54:52.:54:55.

And you are chasing your opponent, that is the wrong thing to do, you

:54:56.:55:00.

need the total opposite, you have to resist what your body is telling you

:55:00.:55:03.

and realise I have ten hurdles to make a tiny bit all the time to get

:55:03.:55:09.

to the end. We are talking about the fact it has

:55:09.:55:12.

not been a vintage year for high hurdles and we have seen it here,

:55:12.:55:19.

haven't we? Yes. Parchment was the leader for

:55:19.:55:23.

Jamaica at one stage, we were all thinking this is going to be great,

:55:23.:55:27.

because it is a new name in the mix and he struggled in that first

:55:27.:55:32.

round. I expected him to go a little bit quicker, to. Let's see what

:55:32.:55:38.

happens in the second round. Let's see what happens in heat

:55:38.:55:41.

three, which we have Aries Merritt end. If there is a time to get your

:55:41.:55:47.

season together, this is the time for the world record, isn't it?

:55:47.:55:51.

This will be a competitive race, as we know, and he is up against

:55:51.:55:57.

Orlando Ortega, and he is hungry for victory. He had a very good season,

:55:57.:56:01.

the young Cuban, then he had an injury problem and had not raced

:56:01.:56:08.

very well. He will be a real threat. We are hearing that Dwight Thomas is

:56:08.:56:13.

a nonstarter. That takes a little bit out of the

:56:13.:56:17.

mix, but I did not see him being one of the main contenders at the end

:56:17.:56:24.

for the battle for the medal. All in all, this is the man under pressure,

:56:24.:56:27.

he is world record-holder, Olympic champion and all eyes will be

:56:27.:56:32.

watching him. Steve, once again come it is all

:56:32.:56:39.

yours. yours.

:56:39.:56:42.

STEVE CRAM: Yes, he is the world record-holder, a season that has had

:56:42.:56:49.

its up and downs, it is fair to say. I was in Shanghai when he poured his

:56:49.:56:53.

strength and it did not look that bad at the time, it looked like one

:56:53.:57:02.

of those niggling pools that will quickly heal, but it took a while.

:57:02.:57:05.

Orlando Ortega, by contrast, has had a very good season, until the London

:57:05.:57:13.

Diamond League, we the pain of them came a cropper. -- Colm McFadden the

:57:13.:57:23.
:57:23.:57:27.

peer of them. -- player of the pair will be in 3Com Orlando Ortega is

:57:27.:57:37.
:57:37.:57:53.

for, then there will be a make the team, even though he was

:57:53.:57:57.

the Olympic champion, he is not defending champion, he was a wild

:57:57.:58:07.
:58:07.:58:19.

London but he is looking a better to, someone has been asked to get

:58:19.:58:29.
:58:29.:58:33.

Merritt, Ortega got them there, as well. This is going to be very

:58:33.:58:39.

close. It will be Merritt, Thomas Martinot-Lagarde and then Balazs

:58:39.:58:47.

Baji. You will be happy with that, he will be pleased, a little smile

:58:47.:58:51.

breaks across his face. Something to be negotiated, you always feel, for

:58:51.:58:57.

the top guys, the first round. Not the sort of hurdling we have seen

:58:57.:59:04.

from Merritt all last year, but he has had that injury. The brakes did

:59:04.:59:07.

not command deliberately, but he is not efficient -- finishing the way

:59:07.:59:12.

you would like him to. Thomas Martinot-Lagarde, much better than

:59:12.:59:19.

his brother. Yes, that was better than we

:59:19.:59:22.

expected for Merritt, especially as he came a cropper at the Olympic

:59:22.:59:30.

Stadium. So, safely through, Colin. Yes, I was watching that from the

:59:30.:59:34.

studio, I was seeing what Merritt would do. It was a very aggressive

:59:34.:59:39.

drive into the first barrier. This time last year, he would

:59:39.:59:45.

collide away, he would literally glide away from his opponents.

:59:45.:59:50.

He seems to just not have that extra gear, that change of pace we were so

:59:50.:59:55.

loose -- so used to last year. There is lots still to come, of course,

:59:55.:59:59.

this is an early round, and he will look forward to the next race, get

:59:59.:00:05.

look forward to the next race, get those cobwebs off.

:00:05.:00:09.

Aries Merritt is alongside me, we were talking about early starts to

:00:09.:00:13.

Will Sharman, how do they affect you? You know, you have to get up so

:00:13.:00:18.

early, get bad for a end to try and wake up and I ate just a little bit

:00:18.:00:21.

of oatmeal to get something in my system because I don't want to be

:00:21.:00:26.

too heavy, but all in all, very comfortable.

:00:26.:00:33.

How different is the mindset to date to tomorrow? It is very different,

:00:33.:00:37.

the mindset to qualify, then in the final unit as hard as you can. Thank

:00:37.:00:42.

you for talking to us. Colin, you were saying at the

:00:42.:00:48.

equivalent stage of the games last year in London how much quicker he

:00:48.:00:52.

ran. Yes, it is always about rhythm. You

:00:52.:00:57.

have to get into the groove, you have to have that consistent, high

:00:57.:01:01.

level of performance. At his seventh straight, he approaches the barrier

:01:01.:01:06.

with long, loping strides, it is not a dynamic, aggressive way in, but

:01:06.:01:10.

when he gets off he get into this beautiful run.

:01:10.:01:16.

His trailing leg is so smooth, it pours over the barrier. But when he

:01:16.:01:22.

goes off the barrier at this stage, we get into this shuffle, he does

:01:22.:01:25.

not raise his knees up high, last year he was shuffling with real

:01:25.:01:32.

speed and intent and this year he does it with far more containment.

:01:33.:01:38.

It seems to me he is playing those hurdles very safe. He has this much

:01:38.:01:45.

between each hurdle, he is not really going for it. Yes, he is not

:01:45.:01:49.

as snappy, that is because of the pace you generate on the floor. The

:01:49.:01:53.

faster and snappier you are, the quicker you go over the hurdle,

:01:53.:01:57.

which means your clearance height gets really shocked. That is why we

:01:57.:02:03.

are seeing that at this early stage. The other thing, as well, with an

:02:03.:02:08.

injury, is that long after a muscle has cleared up, it hangs in the

:02:08.:02:10.

mind, even subconsciously it can take awhile to have confidence you

:02:10.:02:17.

are going be fine. Yes I spoke to him on many occasions during the

:02:17.:02:20.

season and I asked him what was going on, and he has no problems at

:02:20.:02:24.

all with his injury, he says his mind is in the same place, and it

:02:24.:02:29.

seems to me sometimes his training is really showing him he is in great

:02:29.:02:32.

shape. The problem he has is delivering it regularly when it

:02:32.:02:37.

matters, during races. There is a difference between high

:02:37.:02:42.

hurdles in terms of physique, and we will go from Aries Merritt to David

:02:42.:02:48.

Oliver, a man mountain! Yes, he said he spent a little less time in the

:02:48.:02:58.
:02:58.:03:00.

gym. He has become more slight. is fading away! He said is he has

:03:00.:03:07.

lost seven pounds. We thought he would be the next

:03:07.:03:11.

world record-holder. We thought he would be Olympic champion, when he

:03:11.:03:15.

ran that 12.89 in Paris we thought this guy is going to be special.

:03:15.:03:18.

Unfortunately for him there was a hamstring problem and we were

:03:18.:03:23.

wondering, poor David, what does he need to do? He is in the middle of

:03:23.:03:29.

the field with the light blue, and he has an aggressive lead lag. He is

:03:29.:03:34.

heavy, he is strong, and he really mussels his way through the field.

:03:34.:03:39.

That is his fastest time, 13.04. I think everyone was really surprised

:03:39.:03:46.

because he was not showing that much form before then. At David, he came

:03:46.:03:51.

back of this victory and did it again in London. He is feeling more

:03:51.:03:58.

confident in his own performance. I know it is just round one, early

:03:58.:04:03.

morning, but there is nothing they are particularly to frighten him.

:04:03.:04:09.

Yes, I think deep down he will be confident. He will be thinking, I

:04:09.:04:14.

have missed out on titles beforehand and perhaps last -- lot will be on

:04:14.:04:16.

my side. I am keeping my fingers crossed, he

:04:16.:04:23.

is a really nice guy, as well. He has slimmed down, as you can see,

:04:23.:04:29.

David Oliver. Steve, it is all yours.

:04:29.:04:34.

STEVE CRAM: It takes all sorts in terms of the hurdles, but Colin was

:04:34.:04:40.

talking about it, wherever we go, David Oliver gets the sort of looks

:04:40.:04:46.

that you and I can only dream of getting. That is harsh. Harsh but

:04:46.:04:51.

eminently fair. I suppose there have been some big bruising American

:04:51.:04:55.

hurdlers over the years, a rich pedigree in this championship.

:04:55.:05:01.

Foster, Kingdom, Johnson. All of them are certainly cut from the

:05:01.:05:05.

physical mode, I will get through these hurdles if I don't get over

:05:05.:05:10.

them. Incredible season in 2010, he went unbeaten for 19 races but

:05:10.:05:13.

unfortunately, it was one of the fallow years between major

:05:14.:05:20.

championships. A bronze medallist in Beijing. He goes in lane five. A

:05:20.:05:27.

reminder, the first three go through automatically. A good heat, this.

:05:27.:05:37.
:05:37.:05:41.

Four decent athletes. Andrew Riley for Jamaica. Nothing is guaranteed,

:05:41.:05:51.

certainly not in the high hurdles there is Shubenkov, and there is the

:05:51.:05:58.

noise from the chosen few who are coming this morning. His mother was

:05:58.:06:03.

a very good heptathlete, finished fourth in the Olympics in 1988.

:06:03.:06:13.
:06:13.:06:14.

Andrew Riley goes in lane six. And David Oliver, with a personal best

:06:14.:06:18.

which has him fourth in the all-time list. Andrew Riley became the first

:06:18.:06:24.

man to win both the 100 and 110m hurdles at the US Collegiate

:06:24.:06:28.

Championships. He has all but given up the flat because of the Jamaican

:06:28.:06:32.

strength in that discipline and will concentrate on the high hurdles.

:06:32.:06:42.
:06:42.:07:13.

asking for a bit of quiet. We cannot confirm or deny. Ready for the final

:07:13.:07:23.
:07:23.:07:30.

heat in the first round of the away fasted but here comes David

:07:31.:07:40.

Oliver. Shubenkov are going well. It is Oliver, Shubenkov and Andrew

:07:40.:07:46.

Riley that go through, the quickest so far. David Oliver lays down a

:07:46.:07:53.

marker and says, I am here to challenge. And after a very strong

:07:53.:08:00.

start... If there is merit is looking for a challenger, he may

:08:00.:08:05.

look to his own team-mate, because David Oliver was very impressive.

:08:05.:08:08.

Colin Jackson? COLIN JACKSON: It was nice to see

:08:08.:08:12.

David do this. I was wondering that if anybody in these heaps was going

:08:12.:08:17.

to produce anything spectacular for us this morning. --in these heats.

:08:17.:08:23.

David Oliver has managed to do that with a strong performance. But I

:08:23.:08:27.

think it was needed, I think he wanted to really get those cobwebs

:08:27.:08:31.

out, get into a groove, get into a rhythm and establish himself over

:08:31.:08:36.

this field, because there are many people here, including Shubenkov,

:08:36.:08:40.

who will be looking for medals later on, so it was a really great

:08:40.:08:47.

performance from David, nice to see performance from David, nice to see

:08:47.:08:49.

him returning and returning so well. David is alongside me, very happy

:08:49.:08:55.

man, I am sure. Definitely, I'm just happy to be here and representing

:08:55.:08:59.

the USA and having a good time. know Colin Jackson is the presenting

:08:59.:09:04.

position saying you were at the peak of your powers in 2010, you have had

:09:04.:09:07.

injury problems. Are you wanting to put a marker down and show you can

:09:07.:09:13.

be the main man? You don't have to worry about what other people say, I

:09:13.:09:17.

know what goes on, me and my coaching team do and I will try to

:09:17.:09:21.

get back to being the best hurdler I can be. At that time and performance

:09:21.:09:26.

must give you huge confidence on what will be a massive day tomorrow.

:09:26.:09:30.

I don't think that time can give you confidence, I just know I am

:09:30.:09:34.

confident in my ability and all this did was good to be ready for

:09:34.:09:37.

tomorrow. We start all over from scratch again. We wish you all the

:09:37.:09:44.

best for that. Safely through to tomorrow's

:09:44.:09:48.

semifinals, as Sergey Shubenkov and Andrew Rowley and Artur Noga will go

:09:48.:09:52.

through as one of the fastest losers.

:09:52.:09:57.

--Andrew Riley. the early-morning honour of the hurdling has been

:09:57.:10:04.

defended by David Oliver. It was a tremendous run, a majestic

:10:04.:10:07.

tremendous run, a majestic performance. It was good the whole

:10:07.:10:11.

way through. Out of the blocks well, really focused, drove off his

:10:11.:10:17.

trail leg into hurdle two and three and set himself up. He settled into

:10:17.:10:21.

his wonderful rhythm, which is a fast tempo and it achieved what we

:10:21.:10:26.

were hoping, which is a good, solid performance, 13.05, the fastest

:10:26.:10:32.

going into this next round. A strong performance. He didn't need to run

:10:32.:10:38.

that fast, was he trying to send a bit of a message? No, I think he

:10:38.:10:42.

just wanted to do what he needs to do, just run. If you are in that

:10:42.:10:46.

kind of tempo and have it in your legs, why not? It is not going to

:10:46.:10:51.

tax you, you go back and you warm down. This guide the final barrier,

:10:51.:10:56.

it came a bit close to him, but it was what we were hoping he could do

:10:56.:11:00.

and he has managed to do that. Shubenkov right next to him shows he

:11:01.:11:08.

is in good shape. Yes, he looks very good and has massive support from

:11:08.:11:12.

the crowd. Yes, there was a huge cheer when they saw him on the

:11:12.:11:16.

screen, which is nice to see. glance through the qualifiers for

:11:16.:11:24.

tomorrow's semifinals. As I say, this is just the early skirmishes,

:11:24.:11:30.

isn't it? This is exactly what he said, tomorrow, you have to run a

:11:30.:11:35.

whole new set of warm up runs. It is good to get it, you know what the

:11:35.:11:40.

track is like, you know what shape you are in and it will be a deep

:11:40.:11:42.

breath and refocus, when you see the draw, because that will make a

:11:42.:11:47.

difference. Will Sharman is the slowest time, will not play on his

:11:47.:11:52.

mind? No, he is a very confident athlete. He knows what shape he is

:11:52.:11:55.

in, he feels like he can run a personal best and it wouldn't

:11:55.:12:01.

surprise me if he does, even better. He loves mixing it with the top

:12:01.:12:04.

hurdlers in the world and is very confident and he enjoys that, which

:12:04.:12:08.

is why he can raise his level. night, we saw the final of the

:12:09.:12:14.

10,000m and two years ago in Daegu, Mo Farah claimed he didn't know much

:12:14.:12:18.

about Jeilan, the man who beat him. about Jeilan, the man who beat him.

:12:18.:12:20.

He knew all about him here, the man who he was racing in Moscow.

:12:20.:12:24.

What a race it was. BRENDAN FOSTER: They are getting

:12:25.:12:29.

ready on the start line, this is exciting.

:12:29.:12:35.

STEVE CRAM: Ahead, 25 laps of the World Championships 10,000m. In

:12:35.:12:39.

London last year for Mo Farah, it was all about the quest to win

:12:39.:12:49.
:12:49.:12:52.

payback for a gold medal which slipped away in 2011. He goes to the

:12:52.:12:56.

back of the field, he will move when he is ready. The Kenyans are keeping

:12:56.:13:03.

it steady. Mo uses the opportunity, nipping across for a sponge, letting

:13:03.:13:09.

them know he is here. He is running with his team-mates, Galen Rupp just

:13:09.:13:19.
:13:19.:13:29.

point. Jeilan, the man who beat him in Daegu two years ago. The closer

:13:29.:13:33.

we get to three or four laps to go, the closer we will get to the front

:13:33.:13:38.

and he will not want to give up the position. Will the Kenyans try and

:13:38.:13:45.

rough him up? There goes Mo Farah, this is smart, tactical and clever.

:13:45.:13:49.

Looking for his partner, he wants him on his shoulder, he is his wing

:13:49.:13:55.

man. And he has got him there. doesn't need to think about anything

:13:55.:14:00.

else. The bell sounds and Mo has to grab every inch of this lap. There

:14:00.:14:04.

are some challenges coming. He is strong enough, he is fast enough and

:14:04.:14:09.

he is on his way. He has got to kick a game, he has got a man-macro more

:14:09.:14:18.

opportunities. --kick again. He has got two more opportunities. Here

:14:18.:14:24.

comes Jeilan, the defending champion. Mo Farah at the front,

:14:24.:14:29.

Jeilan who won it last time on his shoulder. Mo Farah is kicking hard

:14:29.:14:33.

and Jeilan is still there. The threat has not gone! Mo Farah is

:14:33.:14:39.

digging deep, he has got Jeilan right that! Here is the last bit

:14:39.:14:42.

acceleration and Mo Farah starts to go away. Jeilan is still better! And

:14:42.:14:48.

he again! But Mo Farah is going to get there. This is world domination

:14:48.:14:57.

for Mo Farah, he is going to win. Gold once more. His third global

:14:57.:15:03.

gold medal. He has done it. Goodness me, he gave us some anxious moments

:15:03.:15:07.

on the last lap. It is nice to come out here and win it, that was the

:15:07.:15:11.

one missing, so well worth it. It is nice so many people still believe in

:15:11.:15:15.

me and kept cheering me. me and kept cheering me.

:15:15.:15:18.

It certainly was a tough race. Stephen Brendan are standing by to

:15:18.:15:24.

chat about it. Steve, there was a point with about four or five laps

:15:24.:15:28.

to go where the pace had not been high and you said it could be a

:15:28.:15:36.

demonstration and it turned out to be anything but. You are right, we

:15:36.:15:39.

were looking at each other thinking it wasn't good enough, wasn't hard

:15:39.:15:43.

enough and given the exhilaration we have seen from Mo Farah at

:15:43.:15:48.

Gateshead, that 1500m speed, when he broke the British record in Monaco,

:15:48.:15:52.

you are thinking the last 600, he will pull it all apart. That is easy

:15:52.:15:57.

for us to say, but he had to really graphed on that lap, and the time

:15:58.:16:03.

was nothing special --he had to really graphed. Jeilan had more in

:16:03.:16:06.

the locker than we would have expected, so it wasn't a

:16:06.:16:10.

demonstration, it was hard work and that is how it should become a gold

:16:10.:16:15.

medals should not be easy. That is right and the thing about Mo Farah,

:16:15.:16:19.

if he has one attribute, which he has had all his career, even before

:16:19.:16:23.

he was an outstanding world and Olympic champion, he was a graphed,

:16:23.:16:26.

and he knew that when the bell sounded, there were enough people

:16:27.:16:31.

around him and that he had to win the hard way. And it was the hard

:16:31.:16:34.

way, he kicked on the back straight, he kicked on the bend,

:16:34.:16:41.

they were still there. Then Jeilan came again and this was Mo 's, as

:16:41.:16:46.

Steve said in commentary, last acceleration. There was not any more

:16:46.:16:50.

here. This is as good as he can be, he is in a glorious period of his

:16:50.:16:54.

career. Jeilan did well to come back and he was a big surprise to us, we

:16:54.:17:01.

didn't think he would be this good. But Mo Farah, on a Saturday, he's

:17:01.:17:06.

bullet on Saturdays! He wins Olympic titles, World Championships and

:17:06.:17:13.

thank God the 5000m is next Saturday. He is obviously delighted

:17:13.:17:16.

to win the world title, but do you think there is perhaps a question in

:17:16.:17:22.

his mind, as you said it was not the quickest lap and he may have

:17:22.:17:28.

anticipated going faster? We thought he would go faster than

:17:28.:17:34.

54 seconds for the last lap, he didn't, he ran 54, but no one run

:17:34.:17:38.

any faster. If you look at the split time, I think Jeilan was closer to

:17:38.:17:44.

Mo as they came to the bell. This was a glorious moment for Mo Farah.

:17:44.:17:49.

We will see this and live this again, and for Steve and I it is a

:17:49.:17:55.

complete pleasure to be here. We concentrate on split times, but

:17:55.:18:01.

when Mo kicked in and there was acceleration after the bell, he was

:18:01.:18:06.

winding it up. I did think he would wind it up a little bit more and he

:18:06.:18:12.

would have more pressure in the last 200. But you have one bit of

:18:13.:18:16.

acceleration on the last lap that you have to use wisely. Two years

:18:16.:18:22.

ago, he used it at the wrong time and he had nothing left to give.

:18:22.:18:25.

This time committee were saving that last little push for the home

:18:25.:18:31.

straight and that won him the race. We talk about the preparation before

:18:31.:18:38.

it, running as a team. There was a Kenyan team, an Ethiopian team, and

:18:38.:18:42.

the -- there was Mo Farah's training team, and the only team that did

:18:42.:18:47.

anything as a team was Mo Farah and his trainers. They were running as a

:18:47.:18:55.

team at some points in the race. That was to Mo's advantage. He is

:18:55.:19:00.

really lucky, because it seems to me that his partner is really prepared

:19:00.:19:09.

to give him a lot during the race. Imagining in the 1980s saying, Steve

:19:09.:19:16.

Cram, do you mind leaving me for a lap? It wouldn't happen!

:19:16.:19:20.

We were talking about how fast he ran at whether there may have been

:19:20.:19:26.

any physiological response to that. To go from 1500m to add 10,000m it

:19:26.:19:33.

is a different beast, isn't it? Well, bear in mind it is an

:19:33.:19:40.

endurance event, you cannot get away from that. It is just for him to set

:19:40.:19:44.

off at 56 second lapse is not normal. It is endurance that carries

:19:44.:19:51.

him through. You are right, they have concentrated on getting him

:19:51.:19:56.

race and championship fit. These races are won in the last 1000m. If

:19:57.:20:04.

you can run the last 1000m faster than anyone else, you have the race.

:20:04.:20:14.

Look how strong Mo is finishing here. Mo had a great race. He was

:20:14.:20:18.

closing in the end. That is not speed, that is strength and

:20:18.:20:24.

endurance, and that is the platform on which he built his 10,000m.

:20:24.:20:28.

Steve, you were in tears in the commentary box that day. I will keep

:20:28.:20:32.

that between us. Steve was shocked in commentary and was very gracious

:20:32.:20:37.

because it was a shock. We were shocked by Mo Farah's performance,

:20:37.:20:45.

the way that he ran. You talk about two distances, 1500m and 10,000m.

:20:45.:20:51.

Interestingly, the 10,000m off and run miles and training, but the

:20:51.:21:01.
:21:01.:21:02.

1500m often run miles and training, but they never run 10,000m, do they?

:21:02.:21:07.

How has your athlete recovered in that -- after that nasty fall in

:21:07.:21:13.

Birmingham? It was a difficult fall, we had

:21:13.:21:17.

written off the World Championships, she was badly hurt with a gash, a

:21:17.:21:23.

very visible part of it. We Dobriskey is kept up.

:21:23.:21:29.

Unfortunately, that race put paid to Lisa. In the next lap in the same

:21:29.:21:33.

place when the race was starting to get out, Charlene Thomas had a fall.

:21:33.:21:39.

We thought that was it. She has had great support from UK Athletics,

:21:40.:21:44.

from the team and a physio. But she is here, that is the main thing.

:21:44.:21:48.

Hannah England went on to win it, she is in great shape and we're

:21:48.:21:52.

looking forward to seeing her go. Silver medal two years ago and she

:21:52.:21:57.

will can bit -- commits to this, she is reading to go, but for Laura it

:21:57.:22:00.

is a bit of a struggle. A couple of weeks ago she did not think she

:22:00.:22:05.

would be on the start line. How tough does this first he'd look

:22:05.:22:11.

for her? -- first heat. Pretty tough. The

:22:11.:22:16.

wind is strong, the resort of depth in the seats. They are harder to get

:22:16.:22:23.

through. It is not just about the tactics and

:22:23.:22:27.

the pace the races run out. Hannah is in the third heat. You have to go

:22:27.:22:33.

out there and win the race. She has to forget about her problems and

:22:33.:22:36.

just try and concentrate on the background she had put in before

:22:36.:22:41.

that happened and hope that her body holds up.

:22:41.:22:48.

We will leave it there with you and Brendan to describe this first heat.

:22:48.:22:52.

Brendan to describe this first heat. Three heats and the six fastest

:22:52.:22:56.

losers will go through on Tuesday. Laura Weightman is in the first

:22:56.:23:06.
:23:06.:23:06.

heat, she has the former world champion behind, Nancy Langat. We

:23:06.:23:11.

also have the number one in the world, Abbey B Ali Galli. There are

:23:11.:23:18.

not many favourites in the World Championships who would be more

:23:18.:23:26.

hotly tipped. -- Abeba Aregawi. Siham Hilali has been going well

:23:26.:23:32.

this year. And Young Mary Cain, talking about great tablets, just 17

:23:32.:23:39.

years old from the US. -- talking about great talents. She has done a

:23:39.:23:42.

little bit of training with Mo Farah, she is a brilliant talent,

:23:42.:23:52.
:23:52.:24:03.

watch out for her. This is Jenny Burka, a former indoor champion. --

:24:03.:24:13.
:24:13.:24:17.

Gelete Burka. Watch out for this runner as the camera pans down to

:24:17.:24:22.

Nancy Jebet Langat. She is starting to recover her form that took her to

:24:22.:24:26.

the Olympic title. She has been running pretty well for this year,

:24:26.:24:32.

she has not done for a while. Abeba Aregawi, Ethiopian, now running for

:24:32.:24:39.

Sweden. She married into that nation and still drains in Ethiopia, that

:24:39.:24:43.

is where she has been preparing for these championships. Svetlana

:24:44.:24:48.

Podosynova, third in the Russian Championships. Sub four minute

:24:48.:24:58.
:24:58.:25:04.

his/her personal best. -- is her preparation. Both -- all athletes at

:25:04.:25:07.

some point in their career have to deal with some situation like this

:25:07.:25:17.
:25:17.:25:20.

fastest losers. It will be interesting to see if anyone wants

:25:20.:25:23.

to make this first heat in reasonable pace because there is

:25:23.:25:27.

every chance to go through as long as the piece is reasonable. Some

:25:27.:25:36.

pushing and shoving there, Langat getting involved, Farah is probably

:25:36.:25:42.

a little tentative after what happened at the trials. It is Renata

:25:42.:25:49.

Plis at the front. I am looking there at Abeba Aregawi,

:25:49.:25:54.

the favourite for this event in the yellow and blue vest, now

:25:54.:26:00.

representing Sweden where she has lived -- lived for most ten years.

:26:00.:26:06.

On the outside, Mary Cain, the precocious talent from the US. Laura

:26:06.:26:10.

Weightman, she has done really well to get here, she was still in

:26:10.:26:15.

crutches not long ago. But here she is, thanks to British athletics and

:26:15.:26:20.

Ali Rose in particular. I am sure that a lot of it is then to Steve

:26:20.:26:24.

Cram and his experience over the years. When you come to

:26:24.:26:29.

Championships, you have to deal with problems, sometimes you have to win

:26:29.:26:32.

races at not your best, sometimes you have to run beyond your own

:26:32.:26:40.

ability to try and qualify. Laura Weightman is sensibly tracking Abeba

:26:40.:26:49.

Aregawi, and at the back of the field Mary Cain of the US.

:26:49.:26:52.

Don't be surprised to see her there, she has a real burn up of the

:26:52.:26:57.

finish. She ran half of the race and London on the outside lanes and

:26:57.:27:00.

finished in a mess but she came through like a train to finish

:27:00.:27:05.

fourth. She has great speed to burn at the end of the race. It is a slow

:27:05.:27:15.
:27:15.:27:15.

pace here, that is the disadvantage of being in the first heat. Someone

:27:15.:27:22.

now, as we have two laps to go, you get the feeling they may pick it up.

:27:22.:27:28.

Aregawi for the first timers the front.

:27:28.:27:32.

Look how smoothly Aregawi goes through, moving alongside a fellow

:27:32.:27:41.

Ethiopian born athlete, Gelete Burka. There is Laura Weightman

:27:41.:27:45.

running strongly now, getting into her running, relaxing, moving,

:27:45.:27:49.

beginning to move a bit more smoothly. She is going through on

:27:49.:27:53.

the inside, some things that is a little dangerous, maybe she should

:27:53.:27:57.

position herself on the outside. As they come into the finishing

:27:57.:28:01.

straight, Gelete Burka on a good position. There is a bunch of them

:28:01.:28:05.

ahead of Laura. She looks as if she is struggling a little bit now but

:28:05.:28:10.

she has to give herself a chance, don't always rely on a gap coming

:28:10.:28:15.

through on the inside. Mary Cain of the US, ten three looked as if she

:28:15.:28:23.

is struggling. -- Laura looks as if she is

:28:23.:28:27.

struggling. That is not surprising, given

:28:27.:28:31.

everything she has gone through. She has to try and work as hard as she

:28:31.:28:36.

can on the last lap. She will really struggled there. Aregawi kicks this

:28:36.:28:46.

race off. Siham Hilali moving up. Laura is really struggling with 250

:28:46.:28:53.

to go. That is what happens when you have not had decent preparation, you

:28:53.:28:56.

cannot get over that sometimes. Aregawi leads the front with

:28:57.:29:03.

confidence and style. She has so much ability and she is so much

:29:03.:29:10.

better than everyone else, she is just jogging here, to be honest.

:29:10.:29:16.

Mary Cain is fighting here, Nancy Langat just accelerates, as well.

:29:16.:29:19.

Renata Plis on the inside, it is going to be very tight, Renata Plis

:29:19.:29:28.

is just about holding on. Mary Cain goes through, the top six

:29:28.:29:34.

qualifying, that has been a real struggle for Laura. As always, it

:29:34.:29:38.

was always going to be a struggle to get here. That was the likely

:29:38.:29:46.

outcome, unfortunately. She looked a little distressed, there, Steve.

:29:46.:29:50.

That is disappointing to see. There we go, Aregawi, the athlete coming

:29:50.:29:56.

into this race as a favourite. In the red vest on the outside, Gelete

:29:56.:30:01.

Burka, the athlete I don't think suits this distance, I think she is

:30:01.:30:06.

better at other distances, she is in the green vest of Ethiopia. On the

:30:06.:30:08.

outside, there comes nearly came with a lot of hopes on her

:30:08.:30:16.

shoulders. There you go, one, two, three, four, five. Mary Cain

:30:16.:30:22.

calculated in six places, Nancy Langat ahead of her. This girl,

:30:22.:30:28.

Aregawi, and sadly Laura Weightman in a little bit of trouble there.

:30:28.:30:35.

That isn't disappointment for her, she is obviously a bit distressed.

:30:35.:30:40.

-- that is a big disappointment for her. That is the unofficial

:30:40.:30:48.

scoreboard, it gets up quicker than our computers tend to. That gives

:30:48.:30:54.

the other is something to aim at. With six fastest losers spots

:30:54.:30:57.

available, that is reasonably quick in the first round. The others do

:30:58.:31:02.

see that as they come into the stadium. They have that to aim at.

:31:02.:31:12.

Ten three is with Phil. A little bit emotional after that, but we have to

:31:12.:31:16.

remind you that you are on crutches a couple of weeks ago, Brendan spoke

:31:16.:31:19.

about it in commentary and Steve knows what you have been through, so

:31:19.:31:24.

it was remarkable that you are here at all. Yes, I knew it would be top

:31:24.:31:29.

and Eiffel Tower caper the first 600 and after that, I had nothing in my

:31:29.:31:36.

legs --I knew it would be tough and after the first 600. But missing a

:31:36.:31:40.

vital time in training, I knew it would be hard and it is

:31:40.:31:43.

disappointing but I couldn't perform any better. I have to thank

:31:43.:31:46.

everybody who has helped me to get to the start line, because after the

:31:46.:31:50.

hard work of the winter, I wanted to be here and give myself the best

:31:50.:31:54.

possible chance, so thanks to everyone. Athletes have all kinds of

:31:54.:32:00.

careers high and lows, it must have taught you a lot about yourself,

:32:00.:32:05.

putting yourself through that to get here. It has been a great

:32:05.:32:08.

experience, getting so close to a major championships, so I have

:32:08.:32:12.

learned a lot through this period and it will take me forward and I

:32:12.:32:16.

can come back to World Championships and be more competitive. You have

:32:16.:32:19.

given yourself a lot of credit, don't be too upset.

:32:19.:32:25.

Thank you. Good to see Heather, they were distressing scenes when she

:32:25.:32:31.

crossed the line. We can speak to Steve --good to see Laura there.

:32:31.:32:37.

Steve, she is a very brave athlete. Yes, it would have been easy to say

:32:37.:32:41.

don't go, but she wanted to be here and the staff, as you pointed out,

:32:41.:32:45.

worked incredibly hard and we went out to Barcelona with the team last

:32:45.:32:48.

week and we could all see she was struggling with her fitness but

:32:48.:32:52.

everybody did the best they could. All you can do is get somebody to

:32:52.:32:56.

the start line and hope the body stands up. But she has missed a lot

:32:56.:33:00.

and Laura is the sort of athlete that needs training to be going well

:33:00.:33:04.

for her whole body to come together and perform well. When your body is

:33:04.:33:08.

going to let you down, it doesn't matter how positive you have been or

:33:08.:33:11.

try and put it to the back of your mind, you do or not the right things

:33:12.:33:16.

but if you don't get a response, you don't get a response. Other athletes

:33:16.:33:20.

have to go through that, you get disappointments in your career and

:33:20.:33:23.

she has the rest of the season to look forward to and another two or

:33:23.:33:26.

three weeks to get fit, running more races and looking forward to next

:33:26.:33:35.

year. I guess that kind of slightly distressing response was from trying

:33:35.:33:40.

to run faster than her body would allow her. Yes, without going into

:33:40.:33:43.

too much detail, Laura is a childhood asthma sufferer and when

:33:43.:33:48.

she is not as fit as she can be, the breathing becomes a problem and she

:33:48.:33:53.

overstretch is her rib cage and the breathing becomes distressing. But

:33:53.:33:57.

when she is fit, she runs really well and when she is not fit, that

:33:57.:34:01.

kind of thing can happen. She will cope with it, she is very strong

:34:01.:34:06.

mentally and she will move on. your advice perhaps not to come at

:34:06.:34:12.

all? No, because she is a young athlete and when she was in the

:34:12.:34:15.

selection period and no one else could be selected, which is what

:34:15.:34:19.

happened after the trials, if someone else could have come, it

:34:19.:34:29.

would have been an option but Lisa got injured, we had three women with

:34:29.:34:32.

the A Standard and Laura was selected and we hoped it would come

:34:32.:34:36.

together. If it doesn't, you accept that and thank everybody for helping

:34:36.:34:41.

you get there and you move on. you get there and you move on.

:34:41.:34:44.

Thanks for the moment, we will head out to the track, heat two, Jenny

:34:44.:34:48.

Simpson going on this one. Andrew Cotter will be commentating.

:34:48.:34:55.

Arakawa looking very good in the first one that Arakawa ee looking

:34:55.:35:03.

very good in the first heat. Simpson in good form this year, winning at

:35:03.:35:13.
:35:13.:35:19.

the Monaco Diamond League. Belete, Ethiopia spreading out there talent

:35:19.:35:28.

to the middle east, running for Bahrain. I think the strongest

:35:28.:35:32.

challenge to Aregawi, as we look at Sheila Reid, another very talented

:35:32.:35:39.

runner, this woman here, Kipyegon, just 19. Only Aregawi has gone

:35:39.:35:44.

quicker this season. An amazing talent. So often we see teenagers,

:35:44.:35:49.

late teens, early 20s, coming through from Ethiopia and Kenyon and

:35:49.:35:53.

Kipyegon is just a bed at the very top at the moment. One of a trio of

:35:53.:36:03.
:36:03.:36:11.

Kenyan athletes we have seen here six go through automatically. And

:36:12.:36:16.

the next six fastest go through to the semifinals. And again, the

:36:16.:36:24.

slight advantage of seeing the pace of the first race. I think we are

:36:24.:36:29.

all looking forward to seeing fake Kipyegon are running, what a talent

:36:29.:36:39.

she is. --fake Kipyegon. certainly is, cross country champion

:36:39.:36:48.

and it is the leading brand for all long. She is a former junior cross

:36:48.:36:51.

country champion but she is an athlete who will get better and we

:36:52.:36:54.

hope she runs well in this championship, but the Commonwealth

:36:54.:36:59.

Games in Glasgow next year could be an event where she really excels. On

:36:59.:37:04.

the outside, positioning ourselves well. --herself well. The athletes

:37:04.:37:12.

moving at a sensible place, --sensible pace. They know what time

:37:12.:37:15.

or put them in a qualifying position and when you know that, you aim your

:37:16.:37:21.

lap times and it looks as though these athletes are intent on moving

:37:21.:37:25.

a little bit faster. It is a shade slow but they will accelerate in the

:37:25.:37:34.

later stages. We are led out by the woman taking most of the support

:37:34.:37:42.

from the crowd, Sharmina. Jenny Simpson also placed very well on her

:37:42.:37:47.

shoulder, but the tiny figure of Kipyegon moving easily into third

:37:47.:37:56.

place. Talking about youngsters, the 18-year-old Teferi coming around the

:37:56.:38:06.
:38:06.:38:10.

corner. Six will go through automatically. Jenny Simpson coming

:38:10.:38:14.

into this championships in really good form, on the shoulder of the

:38:14.:38:17.

leader, putting herself in the right place. Kipyegon knows what to do,

:38:17.:38:22.

she is on her shoulder and Teferi is on her shoulder. So Jenny Simpson

:38:23.:38:29.

comes into this race as the defending champion and that

:38:29.:38:31.

sometimes is pressure on some athletes, but sometimes it is a

:38:31.:38:36.

great opportunity. Let's face it, the first six to go through, it is a

:38:36.:38:41.

bit slower and they will have to pick the pace up. Charmaine of

:38:41.:38:47.

Russia is leading --Sharmina of Russia is leading. Jenny Simpson

:38:48.:38:57.

looks as though she is aggressive and wants to take it on. The door

:38:57.:39:05.

opened for Zoe Buckman. defending champion Simpson is bare

:39:05.:39:11.

and McGhee, the other American. --is there. They are queueing up at the

:39:11.:39:16.

bell, Jenny Simpson is ready and poised. Sheila Reid of Canada are

:39:16.:39:21.

not moving through very quickly. Jenny Simpson, you can sense she is

:39:21.:39:28.

went up about this event. Three, they could qualify quickly or as a

:39:28.:39:36.

fastest loser, but they are not looking at that. One of these

:39:36.:39:39.

athletes is going to miss out and Jenny Simpson is determined that it

:39:39.:39:44.

is not going to be her. A little bump for Sharmina, she wasn't happy

:39:44.:39:49.

and nor should she be. Kipyegon getting ready to go, but since then

:39:49.:39:56.

has run a very good racing. Let's see if Kipyegon has a sprint finish.

:39:56.:40:03.

--Simpson has run a very good race. Kipyegon has some in reserve.

:40:03.:40:09.

Sharmina scanning and people coming left and right. Simpson is there.

:40:09.:40:13.

These are going to make it comfortably and have energy to

:40:13.:40:17.

conserve if they wanted. Zoe Buckman taking the victory. The crowd want

:40:17.:40:26.

Sharmina to get it but Zoe Buckman has her moment. I would say concerns

:40:26.:40:30.

for Kipyegon. She is a young athlete, a talented athlete, but

:40:30.:40:35.

this was a race where Jenny Simpson, you could tell that there are three

:40:35.:40:42.

rounds of the 1500m before the race is run. There was a glare from

:40:42.:40:45.

Sharmina, Zoe Buckman decided she was going to go the short way round

:40:45.:40:50.

and if you are not happy, that his tough! And Australian stance in

:40:50.:40:55.

sport that is not unusual. It is good to see an Australian vest

:40:55.:41:00.

here, a true athletic nation. Sharmina controlling, Jenny Simpson

:41:00.:41:08.

wants to be involved. The young Kipyegon, the red young talent,

:41:08.:41:15.

doing what she can in the straight but she is not on terms. Zoe Buckman

:41:15.:41:20.

with a good run, Jenny Simpson looks good, she looked comfortable and was

:41:20.:41:26.

really keen. Sometimes you have to control that. Zoe Buckman was

:41:26.:41:30.

determined to find the shortest way around this course and that is part

:41:30.:41:35.

of the game, 1500m, you don't want to run more. Sharmina looked good,

:41:35.:41:42.

Jenny Simpson was strong. A good run from Zoe Buckman but if looks could

:41:42.:41:52.

kill, Zoe Buckman would still be lying prone on the back straight.

:41:52.:41:56.

Jenny Simpson looking good in third place, letting the Russian and

:41:56.:42:00.

Australian battle it out, the defending champion getting through.

:42:00.:42:07.

Kipyegon just got there, let's tidy it up for you. Jenny Simpson in fact

:42:07.:42:13.

taking second place. Kipyegon and Belete going through automatically.

:42:13.:42:22.

Sheila Reid struggling to go through as one of the fastest losers.

:42:22.:42:27.

Ashton Eaton is the overall leader in the decathlon. The seventh of

:42:27.:42:32.

event, the second this morning. He had the fastest time anybody, any of

:42:32.:42:37.

the 28 competitors in the hurdles, 13 points 72, and that is a solid

:42:37.:42:47.
:42:47.:43:03.

start in the discus. --13 .72. A good start for the American. Michael

:43:03.:43:07.

Schrader of Germany, lying in third place overall. He is only three

:43:07.:43:16.

points ahead of the Canadian Damian Warner. Wobbles a little bit, but

:43:16.:43:22.

that is pretty useful. He is only a 45-metre discus thrower. 45 points

:43:22.:43:32.
:43:32.:43:41.

62 is his best. --4 defy --45.62. His archrival from Germany goes at

:43:41.:43:44.

the end of this pool. The two kilograms discus go spinning away

:43:44.:43:54.

into the arena. Again, solid, but he needs more. Well, the sun in parts

:43:54.:44:00.

of the stadium, is baking. Not too many spectators here this morning

:44:00.:44:05.

but it is filling up. JONATHAN EDWARDS: I don't really

:44:05.:44:09.

know what to say about bad, I am not sure if it is sunbathing or

:44:09.:44:15.

meditating. It is filling up --about that. In terms of the Russians,

:44:15.:44:22.

massive support and getting involved on Twitter, this one says amazing

:44:22.:44:28.

British support at the Luzhniki Stadium and the final bend belongs

:44:28.:44:31.

to us, the locals haven't turned up. Apart from the sun worshipper!

:44:31.:44:35.

up. Apart from the sun worshipper! One more heed in the 1500m, it

:44:35.:44:39.

includes Hannah England, and she has been speaking to fill the head of

:44:39.:44:47.

the Championships. When it comes to the World Championships it must

:44:48.:44:55.

bring back memories of a couple of years ago, what do you remember two

:44:55.:45:00.

-- what do you remember? I remember just the whole week of

:45:00.:45:03.

it, it was a lovely time with everyone else. I had a good

:45:03.:45:09.

training, the rounds were very successful. I went into the final

:45:09.:45:13.

thinking I was in the best shape I had ever been with, I can relax and

:45:13.:45:18.

have a good performance and it produced a lot more than I thought

:45:18.:45:22.

was possible. And Hannah England is sweeping through! Hannah England

:45:22.:45:29.

takes silver for Britain! I tried to keep that mentality,

:45:29.:45:33.

really. At the end of the day I can only run my best race and hope it

:45:33.:45:38.

finishes me high up. Is there a lot less pressure than

:45:38.:45:42.

last year when there was such desperation for everyone to make the

:45:42.:45:49.

Olympic team? Yes, we are still very focused and we train very hard, but

:45:49.:45:52.

without that external pressure of the whole country watching what we

:45:52.:45:58.

are doing. It has got a bit more chilled out and fun this year.

:45:58.:46:01.

As for your own hopes and expectations, what goes through your

:46:02.:46:05.

head in the run-up to the Championships?

:46:05.:46:11.

Eyes have to stay calm, I use all my energy -- I have to stay calm, I use

:46:11.:46:14.

all my energy in a productive and positive way and when I get to

:46:14.:46:19.

Moscow I will want to take every round as it comes, give it all and

:46:19.:46:24.

hope I can do really well at the end of it.

:46:24.:46:34.
:46:34.:46:34.

She is one of my favourites, I hope JONATHAN EDWARDS: Yes, I think

:46:34.:46:41.

Hannah has come to this in pretty good shape. -- STEVE CRAM:. All of

:46:41.:46:47.

the pace that Hannah has, she will make good use of it when she gets to

:46:47.:46:51.

the final, hopefully. As I said, she needs to be aware of what is going

:46:51.:46:56.

on around her, they are aplenty of good athletes in this heat, as

:46:56.:47:06.
:47:06.:47:35.

well. The semifinals will be very at the back, Sophie Brown, the

:47:35.:47:39.

American who should have been running this race and had a

:47:39.:47:42.

hamstring pull a couple of years ago. She worked hard to get that

:47:42.:47:52.
:47:52.:47:53.

right, but because the Americans named for athletes, Sarah Brown got

:47:53.:47:58.

a really late called two days ago. She only just arrived on Friday

:47:58.:48:04.

evening and she had some issues with her paperwork. Sarah Brown, suddenly

:48:04.:48:07.

finding herself in this World Championship with a late call.

:48:07.:48:17.
:48:17.:48:18.

Hannah England on the inside. Diana Sujew of Germany in the lead. The

:48:18.:48:28.
:48:28.:48:28.

world champion of 3000m, Hellen Obiri. Then it is Genzebe Dibaba.

:48:28.:48:32.

She is the younger sister of the great Tirunesh Dibaba. She wanted to

:48:32.:48:39.

run the 1500m and the 5000m, they would not let her run that. Her

:48:39.:48:44.

sister wanted to run the 10,000m and the 5000m, they would not let her,

:48:44.:48:50.

she is only running the 10,000m. There is criticism this is the only

:48:50.:48:56.

event she has been allowed to enter, the 1500m, but she is right on the

:48:56.:49:06.
:49:06.:49:13.

athlete, rather than quick, she is a twin, actually. Hellen Obiri on her

:49:13.:49:20.

shoulder, Genzebe Dibaba on her shoulder. And England is

:49:20.:49:25.

comfortable, nothing to worry about here, it is a nice, steady pace. She

:49:25.:49:31.

is OK exactly where she is and she will hope that Diana Sujew manages

:49:31.:49:41.
:49:41.:49:42.

to keep this stretched out. 2.13, the slowest second lap.

:49:42.:49:47.

They will have to take four seconds off at pace as they begin to build

:49:47.:49:56.

up momentum. Hannah England knows she will have two following Genzebe

:49:56.:50:04.

Dibaba because she is almost certain to feature. Diana Sujew is running a

:50:04.:50:14.

good sensible race. She has decided to keep the pace going. Hannah

:50:14.:50:18.

England has to just find her way out of here. She is a little bit

:50:18.:50:25.

careful, she is being surrounded by athletes, some too many for comfort.

:50:25.:50:29.

She is having to push, getting yourself into a little bit of

:50:29.:50:34.

trouble. We know she has a strong finish when she is in good shape.

:50:34.:50:38.

Now she has to concentrate on finding her way through. She is on

:50:38.:50:43.

the inside with too many athletes are around for comfort. She is fast

:50:43.:50:48.

on the finish, the backstreet is really important for Hannah England.

:50:48.:50:54.

-- the back straight. Some gaps will appear, sometimes they do, sometimes

:50:54.:51:01.

they don't, that is the problem. Just don't panic, I think. Sarah

:51:01.:51:08.

Brown getting a bit of a nudge there from Hannah. Rodriguez is there,

:51:08.:51:18.
:51:18.:51:18.

Hannah is going wide now. Dibaba has kicked away, Obiri is away. Hannah

:51:18.:51:28.

is just gliding through. Dibaba and Obiri, Hannah England safe in third,

:51:28.:51:36.

then Rodriguez, then Nicole Sifuentes.

:51:36.:51:41.

She was using her experience. She did not run the wisest race but when

:51:41.:51:47.

she got onto the back straight she was confident enough and wise enough

:51:47.:51:52.

in the eight years she has been competing. Now she is in a difficult

:51:52.:51:58.

place, a few too many there, looking for a gap that is not appealing

:51:58.:52:02.

naturally, there is a bit of a push, she was lucky she did not get

:52:02.:52:06.

brought down, fortunately she used her arms to keep her position, kept

:52:06.:52:10.

her head straight and did not worry about anything, that is an

:52:10.:52:14.

experienced athlete. This is Hannah England in full flow and when she

:52:14.:52:23.

starts relaxing and running fast like this she is an outstanding

:52:23.:52:26.

athlete on the finishing straight. You know that Hannah is going to

:52:26.:52:28.

cruise away from these athletes, the two world champions, Dibaba and

:52:28.:52:34.

Obiri are away, Hannah England running quickly and strongly. A fine

:52:34.:52:37.

qualification after that little problem on the back straight.

:52:37.:52:41.

Liggett Dibaba, she will be interesting on the next round, as is

:52:41.:52:50.

Obiri. -- as well Obiri. These athletes are suffering -- left in

:52:50.:52:58.

her wake. She is a former World Championship medallist and she

:52:58.:53:01.

showed the experience and talent, she is downstairs to explain it all

:53:01.:53:05.

she is downstairs to explain it all to Phil Jones.

:53:05.:53:10.

Hannah, you should experience to come through, you showed that great

:53:10.:53:16.

place -- pace, tell me about the race from your perspective. There

:53:16.:53:20.

was a bit of pushing and shoving and I was way back. I just had to relax

:53:20.:53:24.

because I know I have a strong last lap.

:53:24.:53:30.

I knew I could just wait. I knew coming into that last 100 I would be

:53:30.:53:35.

close to the top six and I could turn it on. Described that feeling

:53:35.:53:40.

when you are on the inside and you have a swarm of people coming around

:53:40.:53:46.

outside of view, is it just keen not to panic?

:53:46.:53:51.

Yes, that is what I tried to do, not panic. I got cut up and pushed both

:53:51.:53:58.

of us back a long way, but it is 1500 running.

:53:58.:54:02.

That is what it is all about, getting through. Are you feeling it

:54:02.:54:07.

in mind and body now? This morning I was very nervous, there are all of

:54:07.:54:13.

these athletes in the warm up area, everyone woke up at whatever time it

:54:13.:54:19.

is in the morning. Well, well done for getting through to your next

:54:19.:54:24.

round. I would like to say I am sorry to hear that both Bob Ashwood

:54:24.:54:28.

and Roger mortars have died this week. They both coach in Birmingham

:54:28.:54:32.

and it was hard to hear that and my thoughts go out to all their friends

:54:32.:54:36.

and family. That is very good of you, we all echo those sentiments,

:54:36.:54:46.
:54:46.:54:47.

thank you, Hannah. Yes, absolutely, very sad news about

:54:47.:54:57.
:54:57.:55:06.

both Bob and Roger this week, both a the last date, big advantage, Sonja

:55:06.:55:16.
:55:16.:55:21.

Roman, bitter some similar good. -- A very good qualification there from

:55:21.:55:25.

Hannah England, a lot of tweets coming through, a lot about the lack

:55:25.:55:29.

of the crowd, and a lot about the great interview with Laura

:55:29.:55:34.

Weightman. If you just joined us, she was struggling post-trials with

:55:34.:55:44.
:55:44.:55:44.

that injury. Then a more frivolous one. Love my shoes. But what does

:55:44.:55:50.

the style guru, Mr Jackson, think of them. Luckily, we are here to talk

:55:50.:55:56.

about athletics, not my shoes. It matters to me!

:57:04.:57:41.

to come over the next couple of up, yesterday we saw the women

:57:41.:57:44.

qualifying. Christine Ohuruogu or, came into the championships with

:57:44.:57:49.

high hopes and looked very good. She was loving the championships

:57:49.:57:53.

because she does it so well and when she is here everyone knows she is a

:57:53.:57:59.

genuine threat. She set off in the way we always expect her to do, very

:57:59.:58:04.

cautious 300 metres, but for her the pace is just right. The magic of

:58:04.:58:10.

Christine Ohuruogu really comes alive. She has a beautiful, ranging

:58:10.:58:14.

stride which makes it look effortless. If you can kind of

:58:14.:58:18.

saviour energy at this part of the race before this real build-up, you

:58:18.:58:22.

come into the crown of the bend and started to pour it on, use your

:58:22.:58:26.

energy a bit more, take more out of your body, and you are battling

:58:26.:58:33.

against natural instincts, fatigue, but not Christine. She seems really

:58:33.:58:37.

sensible, she gathers herself well, she does not do a big exhilarating,

:58:37.:58:44.

she has a gradual build-up, hauling herself through the field. This was

:58:44.:58:54.

a special run, 50.22. She did it so well, it was a beautiful run.

:58:54.:58:57.

This year she has got out and about on the Diamond League with the quick

:58:57.:59:02.

athletes, which she has not done in previous years. It is almost like

:59:02.:59:06.

her in Tamil pacing has been quicker than it has before. -- internal

:59:06.:59:14.

pacing. When you go up against the best in

:59:14.:59:17.

the world and gives you a chance to balance yourself in your training

:59:17.:59:22.

with the real competition. Even though she took a couple of defeats

:59:22.:59:26.

early in the year, she ran fast in those competitions, faster than she

:59:26.:59:32.

had ever run in these big events. For me it was a genuine sign that

:59:32.:59:35.

she is arriving at these championships in good form, and when

:59:35.:59:39.

she arrives in good form we are all robbing our hands together and

:59:39.:59:43.

keeping our fingers crossed the magic will be switched on.

:59:43.:59:51.

50.22, we saw her crossed the line hardly breathing.

:59:51.:59:55.

Yes, you can imagine how she will be, she will go back and talk to her

:59:55.:59:58.

coach and they will have a discussion about how it went. I

:59:58.:00:02.

think her coach will be putting her on the shoulder going, let's

:00:03.:00:12.
:00:13.:00:16.

concentrate for the next round and see where we go. In Monaco, her

:00:16.:00:22.

rival loss to her in Monaco. I think she can go perhaps close to

:00:22.:00:28.

49 seconds at these championships. It just depends where Christine is

:00:28.:00:32.

in the final 50 metres to see how close she can get to her. If you can

:00:32.:00:36.

get on an athlete's shoulder and cause tension, you never know what

:00:36.:00:41.

can happen. Let's move on to the men's 400m.

:00:41.:00:49.

Kirani James is one of the standout ins.

:00:49.:00:53.

-- standout names. For me, he is more than a talent. We know how

:00:53.:01:01.

great he can be. He is guided by Harvey Clancy, an Olympic gold

:01:01.:01:05.

medallist in the relay team. He has experience around him, even though

:01:05.:01:09.

he is so young. He comes to championships committee believes he

:01:09.:01:14.

is unbeatable, and he is one of these flawless, effortless runners.

:01:14.:01:24.

It will not be all his own way, he has been beaten by LaShawn Merritt.

:01:24.:01:29.

LaShawn Merritt is controversial, he has had his drugs issues, he was

:01:29.:01:33.

able to run in London last year after the IOC ruling, he perhaps

:01:33.:01:37.

the. Run as well as we thought in London but he is coming back into

:01:37.:01:44.

his form. He was an athlete that had gone into 44 seconds on numerous

:01:44.:01:48.

occasions so we know what he is capable of and he has been hauling

:01:48.:01:54.

himself. He has beaten Kirani James this year, we know that, but he was

:01:54.:01:58.

also exhausted. It was not an easy race for him, he went off hard and

:01:58.:02:04.

suffered at the end, but he took the victory. Kirani James knows that if

:02:04.:02:06.

LaShawn Merritt is back and bases and braces himself better, he will

:02:06.:02:13.

be a threat. Talking about pacing, what will be

:02:13.:02:20.

the approach of Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt today? It is

:02:20.:02:25.

difficult, in the first round your rank how you have done in the

:02:25.:02:30.

season. These athletes will want to win -- win or run fast so they get

:02:30.:02:39.

the best lanes in later rounds. From a British perspective, Nigel Levine?

:02:39.:02:42.

You mentioned Christine, Nigel, again, is someone who has mature at

:02:42.:02:46.

this year by going on the circuit, being competitive.

:02:46.:02:53.

He has enjoyed his racing. We have spoken to him and he has said

:02:53.:02:58.

sometimes, I have not run very well, but we say, look at the people in

:02:58.:03:01.

front of you. He ran well in London, now he will

:03:01.:03:09.

be running and rubbing his hands, because he is where he wants to be.

:03:09.:03:14.

He has lain too, not exactly the best lane draw for an athlete under

:03:14.:03:23.

Yes, Jonathan has been working on getting that pace, getting the 200m

:03:23.:03:31.

speed up. That is what he relies on, to be his big as it in the 400m.

:03:31.:03:37.

Let's move on to our commentary team, starting with Andrew Cotter.

:03:37.:03:43.

Yes, we're just looking at Jonathan Borlee. We think he is slightly

:03:43.:03:53.
:03:53.:04:06.

Borlee introduced to the crowd. There is Tony McQuay. Disappointing

:04:06.:04:10.

in London but he should be challenging for medals. Second to

:04:10.:04:16.

LaShawn Merritt in the US Championships. Bourlet goes Borlee

:04:16.:04:26.
:04:26.:04:32.

goes inside, then Eric Brenes of Costa Rica. Lescay of Cuba is in

:04:32.:04:42.
:04:42.:04:43.

seven. It is four to go through automatically. Four from seven, from

:04:43.:04:53.
:04:53.:04:55.

six if you rather cruelly but realistically rule out one of them.

:04:55.:05:05.
:05:05.:05:34.

Borlee, McQuay and Miller will Allred of the United States. --all

:05:34.:05:44.
:05:44.:05:46.

red. In the headband, Brenes, also going well. Lescay of Cuba to.

:05:46.:05:56.
:05:56.:05:58.

--also. But Tony McQuay easing round the top then and he leads into the

:05:58.:06:06.

home straight --top bend. Borlee looking sharp in lane two. Four

:06:06.:06:10.

going through automatically, time to fire then the engines. McQuay comes

:06:10.:06:19.

through, Borlee can look around in second. That was the winner, but

:06:19.:06:23.

this guy, while you were commentating, I was watching him and

:06:23.:06:27.

he ran outside of his lane in the top bend and I saw a flag go up and

:06:27.:06:32.

if he is not disqualified, I would be amazed. It is Lescay the Cuban,

:06:32.:06:36.

he is in lane seven and watch as he comes around the bend. He just over

:06:36.:06:43.

balances. The flag goes up on the left-hand side, two flags go up. I

:06:43.:06:48.

am pretty sure he will get disqualified. I don't know if it is

:06:48.:06:54.

just inexperienced, but he is 19 years of age. He overbalanced. So

:06:54.:07:03.

the American, and Borlee as expected. There is a lot of talent

:07:03.:07:07.

in the 400m, and Lescay is looking across as if he has qualified but I

:07:07.:07:14.

will be amazed if he is not disqualified. I am sure that will

:07:14.:07:23.

change later on. Stepping out of the lane. It may well be that Nery

point macro . --48. 41. That will help him put the pressure on for a

:08:00.:08:05.

medal. Ashton Eaton is still a long way ahead of everybody. He has

:08:05.:08:10.

another throw to come. He didn't improve on his round one throw. That

:08:11.:08:20.
:08:21.:08:21.

is getting closer to the 50m line. 48. 74, he is still in second place.

:08:21.:08:26.

Ashton Eaton has had his lead cut by Rico Freimuth. Interesting

:08:26.:08:34.

technique. Really explosive, and that is better. A good final throw

:08:34.:08:40.

in this decathlon competition by the Olympic champion and possibly, his

:08:40.:08:44.

lead in first place in the decathlon, will go back up to 100

points plus. The pole-vault come later on this afternoon, then the

:08:50.:08:56.

javelin and then the 1500m. He is excellent at the pole-vault and very

:08:56.:09:00.

solid at throwing the javelin and a decent 1500m runner. It is difficult

:09:00.:09:04.

to see anybody catching him. 45 metres and his lead is beyond the

:09:04.:09:10.

100 points. The women's shot put qualifying

was promoted to silver and originally, in the stadium in

:09:34.:09:41.

London, she only got the bronze, but the eventual winner from Belarus was

:09:41.:09:44.

disqualified for a drugs offence, and that means that everybody

:09:44.:09:50.

underneath was promoted, including Valerie Adams of New Zealand, of

:09:50.:09:55.

course, who rightfully took her place as Olympic champion.

:09:55.:09:59.

Unfortunately, not in front of the London crowd. Kolodko was the silver

:09:59.:10:09.
:10:09.:10:11.

medallist, she qualifies easily. Gong Lijiaou China, a world

:10:11.:10:17.

championship bronze medallist back in Berlin. Very fast. Just over the

her sixth world championship final. Three gold medals, her most

youngster from the USA, Arman Hall. France's another great talent from

Jamaica. Masrahi, this guy started out his career as a 3,800m runner.

He got axed to do the relay by his college and is now one of the

interesting to see how he goes. Jamaica have got a young talent in

in a real battle with the Italian. Arman Hall misses out. That is a

:15:48.:15:55.

quick race. You look at these first rounds and you think the top four is

:15:55.:16:00.

going to be easy and suddenly, the guy who is on 44.82 this year is out

:16:00.:16:10.
:16:10.:16:12.

at the top four. --out of. Enriquez was the surprise, the Brazilian,

:16:12.:16:17.

ending up with a personal best. That was a surprise. Arman Hall, the

:16:17.:16:22.

shades come off. He is a 19-year-old at his first major championships,

:16:22.:16:26.

comes with all of the talent and pedigree but he just wasn't there in

:16:26.:16:33.

the final 50m. And a very close finish you can see the stamina of

:16:33.:16:38.

the former distance runner of Masrahi. He had to work hard, very

:16:38.:16:46.

good race, a quick race, which may still spare Arman Hall. But he

:16:46.:16:52.

finishes fifth and will wait. At this point around the bend, you

:16:52.:16:55.

thought with that pedigree and the times he has run this season that he

:16:55.:17:01.

would find another gear and eases way up. You can see how hard he is

:17:01.:17:06.

having to work as Masrahi comes through the inside. A strong finish

:17:06.:17:16.

from Matteo Galvan and Javon Francis. That was the end for Arman

:17:16.:17:24.

Hall, though I do suspect that he will still see it through. Ramon

:17:24.:17:28.

Miller ran 47 in the first heat and has been a fastest loser so far. It

:17:28.:17:32.

is much quicker than that. You have to accept that you cannot look at

:17:33.:17:36.

the start list and say I can beat him, I can beat him, because there

:17:36.:17:41.

you have two guys who have run personal bests and you have to

:17:41.:17:49.

accept that people are going to run well. It will be an anxious wait for

:17:49.:17:52.

the young American. It looks like it will be good enough but there are

:17:53.:18:01.

some good heaps to come. As Steve said, a hard job for the

:18:01.:18:03.

As Steve said, a hard job for the early-morning boys. It was hard for

:18:03.:18:11.

Denise to drag herself out of bed and joiners, and a large of spots.

:18:11.:18:15.

--join us. I thought I would coordinate with your boys. LaShawn

:18:15.:18:20.

Merritt coming up next, heat number three of the 400m and Colin and I

:18:20.:18:27.

were discussing that he may be the only person who can challenge

:18:27.:18:32.

Kirani. He has a point to prove, having that minor suspension. He

:18:32.:18:37.

came backlash year but hurt his hamstring in the Olympics. He has

:18:37.:18:41.

been consistent but definitely the only person I have seen in this

:18:41.:18:46.

field who can really challenge Kirani James. These heat have been

:18:46.:18:51.

competitive so far, a lot quicker than we anticipated, so maybe we

:18:51.:18:55.

will see LaShawn Merritt do a 44? Let's see. It is about the

:18:55.:19:00.

competitiveness of these early rounds. You can never guarantee your

:19:00.:19:04.

position. I think Steve summed it up wonderfully well, when you come to a

:19:04.:19:09.

Championships, everything goes to zero. So it means anybody can do

:19:09.:19:13.

anything at any time. You have to wipe up for the whole --wipe off the

:19:13.:19:20.

whole of the season. But LaShawn, he has been Olympic champion and knows

:19:21.:19:25.

what it is like to qualify in the first round and is in half decent

:19:25.:19:30.

shape. It is difficult to judge what a 75% pace is, because you don't do

:19:30.:19:37.

much of it in training. You do, you will do various different training

:19:37.:19:43.

sessions, from flat out. These guys will gauge their 200m times, so I am

:19:43.:19:49.

expecting him to go out relatively hard for 200 and assess where he is

:19:49.:19:52.

off that final bend and if he needs to work down the straight and he

:19:52.:19:57.

will do so. He is a very experienced athlete. He has his reputation on

:19:57.:20:00.

the line and he will want to deliver and make sure he doesn't make any

:20:00.:20:06.

mistakes in these rounds. It is heat three, with LaShawn Merritt, and

:20:06.:20:10.

three, with LaShawn Merritt, and Andrew Cotter is commentating.

:20:10.:20:13.

It is a reputation which comes with baggage, having served a drug

:20:13.:20:18.

suspension. The only other man to have beaten the rani James this

:20:18.:20:26.

season --Kirani James, which he did this season in the Diamond League.

:20:26.:20:32.

Olympic champion in Beijing, world champion in Berlin, but then came

:20:32.:20:40.

the suspension. Maslak, the European champion indoors and outdoors in

:20:40.:20:50.
:20:50.:20:57.

lane three. Krasnov will delight the crowd. Still a youngster. Lendore,

:20:57.:21:05.

of Trinidad goes on the outside. He held of Britain's Martyn Rooney last

:21:05.:21:15.
:21:15.:21:44.

year. --held off. LaShawn Merritt echoing around this cavernous

:21:44.:21:54.
:21:54.:22:11.

stadium. --sheds. Heat three of the should be no more than a stroll for

:22:11.:22:21.
:22:21.:22:21.

him. Krasnov outside him, already being eased past. The Venezuelan has

:22:21.:22:27.

gone off very quickly. He may pay the price. LaShawn Merritt just

:22:27.:22:36.

holding him at bay at the moment. Wide outside, Maslak in lane three

:22:36.:22:43.

with the colourful sleeves. Four to go through. So these four are going

:22:43.:22:47.

to go through automatically and at the head of the field, LaShawn

:22:47.:22:57.
:22:57.:23:01.

Merritt, 44 points 91. A fairly easy looking time --44. 91. That will do

:23:01.:23:07.

nicely to start his campaign. Pretty impressive, wasn't it? A stark

:23:07.:23:11.

contrast to Krasnov, who looked like he was walking through treacle that

:23:11.:23:17.

the first 200m. He should have been in the top four. That first 300,

:23:17.:23:21.

they were moving quicker than you think and at this point, there is

:23:21.:23:24.

only four to go through and LaShawn Merritt could ease back, he has

:23:24.:23:28.

looked at the screen comic is looking around and this is really

:23:28.:23:38.
:23:38.:23:53.

impressive, run so quick when there performance. What about yourself?

:23:53.:24:02.

Good. It feels closed in. Now that I am breathing Tom it is like a thick

:24:02.:24:12.
:24:12.:24:15.

air. I don't feel tired. We are almost in an indoor arena. There is

:24:15.:24:20.

this open space above us, but it is humid and close. ' yes, but everyone

:24:20.:24:25.

is breathing the same air! You are breeding very fine now. What can we

:24:25.:24:30.

expect when you step up later? will step it up a notch. The

:24:30.:24:35.

competition will be different. I will corrode back -- go back and

:24:35.:24:45.
:24:45.:24:54.

LaShawn Merritt was very impressive, very comfortable winning that one.

:24:54.:24:58.

Disappointing for Vladimir Krasnov, the Russian. He will have to see.

:24:58.:25:07.

Heat three is Compleat. Next to go in heat four will be Nigel Levine.

:25:07.:25:17.
:25:17.:25:19.

Let's hear his pre-championship many times before. You are going

:25:19.:25:23.

into the 400m. It shows the progression you are making. How

:25:23.:25:30.

excited are you by Moscow this year? Quite excited. Going from the

:25:30.:25:34.

relay into the individual race, and starting from the Olympics is taking

:25:35.:25:37.

through that high and carrying it through to the World Championships,

:25:37.:25:41.

so hopefully next year will be the European Championships, gaining

:25:41.:25:51.
:25:51.:25:54.

experience. Earlier on this year, we saw you win the gold in the relay.

:25:54.:25:57.

What did that do for your confidence? It gave me great

:25:57.:26:07.

confidence. Surely, the European Championships are not very big

:26:07.:26:09.

compared to the World Championships, but it was a good

:26:09.:26:16.

stepping stone. And we have seen you mix it up on the Diamond League

:26:16.:26:21.

circuit this year. How has that benefited you? I raised the guys I

:26:21.:26:24.

am racing at the World Championships, so I am not going to

:26:24.:26:31.

be scared. I know their tactics and how they run. It is great to base

:26:31.:26:34.

them -- to race them before the World Championships. So going there

:26:34.:26:37.

will not face me and it gives me more confidence with where I stand

:26:37.:26:43.

and what I can do to these people when it matters. It is great to mix

:26:43.:26:53.
:26:53.:26:55.

it up on a circuit around Europe. still has his long shorts on. He

:26:56.:26:57.

looks like he has forgotten something. He has forgotten

:26:57.:27:02.

something. He's looking for something. He is an experienced

:27:02.:27:11.

competitor. He knows that in lane two he will have everyone to look

:27:11.:27:15.

at. As we have seen in a couple of the heats, you cannot be half asleep

:27:16.:27:23.

year. If he wants to finish in the first four, and he can, anywhere

:27:23.:27:26.

around the 46 seconds mark would be comfortable, but at the moment am at

:27:26.:27:35.

the slowest of the fastest losers is 46.55. He is on the inside in lane

:27:35.:27:45.
:27:45.:28:08.

coming through in recent years from Kirani James and Luguelin Santos.

:28:08.:28:18.

Arman Hall will still be hanging onto his fastest loser spot. Chris

:28:18.:28:25.

Brown has had so many great championships. Kevin Borlee is a

:28:25.:28:30.

European champion from 2010. The Belgian champion this year, won a

:28:30.:28:39.

bronze at the World Championships two years ago. His younger brother

:28:39.:28:42.

in -- is joining them in the relay. The quelling Santos is not quite

:28:43.:28:52.
:28:53.:28:54.

setting the world alight as he did last year. Nigel Levine has not run

:28:54.:29:02.

under 45 yet. He would lift the user -- he would love to do that. The

:29:02.:29:11.

first thing is to finish in the top four. Be ready to race. It is still

:29:11.:29:21.
:29:21.:29:52.

mourning here in Moscow, 11:30am, quickly. The Nicaraguan is not in

:29:52.:29:56.

the same class as other athletes here. Nigel Levine has not been so

:29:56.:30:03.

fast in the first 200m. Omar Johnson is also doing well. Luguelin Santos

:30:03.:30:13.
:30:13.:30:15.

is on the outside. Nigel Levine has to not panic. There are five in this

:30:15.:30:19.

now. Nigel Levine is looking good. They are all in the line. There is

:30:19.:30:22.

going to be a scrappy. He has gone past Johnson and moved into the top

:30:23.:30:30.

four. 45.23, the winning time. That is the result you would have

:30:30.:30:35.

expected. As we have seen already, expectations can be thrown out of

:30:35.:30:42.

the window if you do not perform. It is tough in lane two, because it

:30:42.:30:50.

looks like everyone is out there, and you haven't got to panic. He was

:30:50.:30:57.

strong in the home straight as Omar Johnson faded. In lane two, figures

:30:57.:31:04.

must seem a long way in the distance, but there was no panic.

:31:04.:31:08.

The good in Santos and Kevin Borlee went out quickly enough. There was a

:31:08.:31:18.
:31:18.:31:29.

bit of concern for Nigel Levine. He was biding his time. I think if you

:31:29.:31:34.

were hoping for better things from Nigel Levine, he could look

:31:34.:31:44.
:31:44.:31:56.

to trust the stagger. People do plenty of training in lanes one and

:31:56.:32:00.

two. I know it is not considered a good lane, because as you said, you

:32:00.:32:06.

can panic about the distances over the first 200m. But he has a good

:32:06.:32:10.

shot here from the side. His action looks good. This is where he

:32:10.:32:18.

realises he has got to work. He has got himself into the home straight.

:32:18.:32:21.

He is completely focused, Nigel Levine, not interested in what is

:32:21.:32:25.

happening on the lanes to the right of him. He is focusing on the line

:32:25.:32:35.
:32:35.:32:36.

and running very well indeed. 45.41 Very mature performance. What you

:32:36.:32:40.

told me about it from your perspective, you have just said that

:32:40.:32:44.

he was still only force but you did what he needed to do. It was a great

:32:44.:32:51.

race. I came up the bend and stand straight. I was leading the race,

:32:51.:32:55.

tied up at the end. I came through fourth. Chris Brown just nipped me

:32:55.:33:04.

to the line. I am through to the next round. Tomorrow, I am going to

:33:04.:33:08.

analyse the race so that I can be better and hopefully qualify for the

:33:08.:33:14.

final. To you feel anything here and now that could be better? Get in a

:33:14.:33:19.

better lane! But coming forth, hopefully I will get in and outside

:33:19.:33:23.

lane rather than lane two or three again. Fingers crossed. How were the

:33:24.:33:27.

nerves this morning? I was very nervous this morning. The first

:33:27.:33:32.

round is at the way, so I am more relaxed and the real race starts

:33:32.:33:42.
:33:42.:33:45.

tomorrow. It was a great into the semifinal, and hopefully he

:33:46.:33:51.

will get a good outside lane. 45.23, the winning time for Santos, but it

:33:51.:34:01.
:34:01.:34:12.

was close. Yuzo Kanemaru and Omar Nigel Levine. I think so. He said in

:34:12.:34:18.

his interview before the race that he has been getting used to running

:34:18.:34:25.

with big guys. He has been racing much more wisely this year. Let's

:34:25.:34:29.

Talkback Kirani James. This graphic shows his domination and LaShawn

:34:29.:34:39.
:34:39.:34:43.

Merritt's domination of this event year shades -- shed between two men.

:34:43.:34:48.

Denise? Yes, this is a two horse race going into the final. The times

:34:48.:34:51.

are staggering. The rest of the field can't live with the sheer pace

:34:51.:34:59.

of these two guys. LaShawn Merritt is renowned for going out really

:34:59.:35:04.

hard over the first 200, and Kirani James can just go with that. That

:35:04.:35:09.

reminds me of Roger Black and his approach to racing, going four

:35:09.:35:12.

seconds and stop it is almost as if everybody else he is going for

take your competition for granted. You have to respect the guys, they

:39:41.:39:45.

are here for a reason, to make a name for themselves and some of them

:39:45.:39:48.

are here to do a lot of great things for their country, so you have to go

:39:48.:39:54.

through every race like each of these guys are capable of winning.

:39:54.:39:58.

How does your focus change from today to the next round as it builds

:39:58.:40:05.

in intensity? We will see the lanes and the timings for the next round

:40:05.:40:09.

but for now, I am happy with this run and happy to get through to the

:40:09.:40:15.

next round. Thank you. You can always judge how

:40:15.:40:19.

much race has taken out of him by the interview he does afterwards and

:40:19.:40:25.

Kirani James standing and chatting for awhile. Sensible words, you can

:40:25.:40:30.

never take anything for granted, but looking forward to a showdown with

:40:30.:40:34.

LaShawn Merritt. It gets more LaShawn Merritt. It gets more

:40:34.:40:38.

serious in the semifinals tomorrow. But that was a very sensibly run

:40:38.:40:43.

open from Kirani James. Before automatic qualifiers...

:40:43.:40:47.

Disappointing for van Niekerk, missing out, but we will see if he

:40:47.:40:57.
:40:57.:40:57.

Back to the Dirk Kuyt on, it is the turn of Michael Schrader, having a

:40:57.:41:07.
:41:07.:41:13.

real tussle with his team-mate Freimuth. And that looks like it

:41:13.:41:19.

could be his best throw, the coaches are chuffed. So Rico Freimuth was

:41:19.:41:24.

temporarily in second place, behind Ashton Eaton, who lives at the

:41:24.:41:30.

moment. There are a whole other pool of discus throwers to come in the

:41:30.:41:35.

decathlon before we head off to the pole-vault. It looks like Michael

:41:35.:41:38.

Schrader could have fought back there, a really good clutch throw,

:41:38.:41:43.

as the Americans would say. His last chance to go ahead of Freimuth and

:41:43.:41:52.

he has done it, 46. 44. He moves back into second, a lifetime's best.

:41:52.:41:57.

There are only four women shot putters who have thrown over 20

:41:57.:42:05.

metres and this is one of them, Christina Schwanitz Germany. She

:42:05.:42:13.

heaves it out beyond 18 points 70 on this occasion. --18. 70. It looks

:42:13.:42:20.

like it could be 19 metres plus. So Schwanitz, who has thrown over 20

:42:20.:42:25.

metres this year, a prodigious distance, she could be one of the at

:42:25.:42:35.
:42:35.:42:40.

least two challenge Valerie Reid. Schwanitz qualifies. And there are

:42:40.:42:46.

the qualifiers, led by Valerie Adams, as I was just saying, and

:42:46.:42:56.
:42:56.:42:57.

Christina Schwan it's getting through --Schwanitz. Michelle Carter

:42:57.:43:02.

could perhaps get over 20 metres a game. There are some of the athletes

:43:02.:43:05.

who did not achieve the qualifying standard but become part of the top

:43:05.:43:15.
:43:15.:43:19.

has managed to hang onto second place overall after the 110m

:43:19.:43:25.

hurdles, but he is going to have to extend his lifetime best in this

:43:25.:43:29.

discus, which he may well have done with that throw. His best ever throw

:43:30.:43:39.

is just over 41 metres. It could be close. May just be a little bit down

:43:39.:43:47.

on that. But with Rico Freimuth and Schrader going very well in the

:43:47.:43:51.

discus, Gunnar Nixon is going to need everything he can muster. He is

:43:51.:43:58.

down in fourth place at the time being.

:43:58.:44:01.

JONATHAN EDWARDS: The spectators enjoying the sunshine and it is

:44:01.:44:05.

filling up a little bit. Some enjoying it a little bit too much.

:44:05.:44:09.

When they are watching Newcastle at St James's Park, they wear that

:44:09.:44:15.

outfit when it is minus five degrees. Anyway, you wouldn't bet

:44:15.:44:20.

against Ashton Eaton in the decathlon of Valerie Adams in the

:44:20.:44:24.

decathlon of Valerie Adams in the discus, but who for the men's 400m?

:44:24.:44:27.

I am sticking with Kirani, he's experienced and is championship

:44:27.:44:33.

material and can really go fast. Not just an ordinary 44, I am thinking a

:44:33.:44:43.
:44:43.:44:44.

43 something. I agree, I think whatever LaShawn Merritt can do,

:44:44.:44:49.

Kirani has that extra two or three metres on him. He is my favourite

:44:49.:44:53.

for the gold, but they have such contrasting styles of running and

:44:53.:44:57.

how they approach the event itself. Like I said, LaShawn Merritt,

:44:57.:45:04.

renowned for that fast 200 opening start. Kirani James seems to wind up

:45:04.:45:09.

and because his technique is so deceptive, with that loping ranging

:45:09.:45:15.

run, but you can't actually feel the power he is generating on the track,

:45:15.:45:19.

but I do believe we have not seen the best from this guy yet. Kirani

:45:19.:45:23.

James has so much more to deliver. He is an incredibly raw talent,

:45:23.:45:27.

despite what he has achieved so far and the good thing is that with

:45:27.:45:30.

LaShawn Merritt academics and fully fit, you will have these two pushing

:45:30.:45:37.

each other --back in the mix. It is what makes the sport. It is the

:45:37.:45:42.

competitive events we love to see, guys battling on a regular basis.

:45:42.:45:45.

The lane draw will dictate how the race may pan out, because I will

:45:45.:45:51.

think Kirani might be thinking he went really quick in that 200, it

:45:51.:45:58.

could easily blow mine --his mind, so he could be a real mix-up.

:45:58.:46:05.

will talk about the 100m now, the women's coming up shortly. 2011, the

:46:05.:46:08.

world champion was Carmelita Jeter but in 2009, it was Shelley Ann

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce just gets in! That is the fastest time in the

world this year. She gets the world title. She won it right at the

:46:47.:46:49.

Fraser-Pryce. A remarkable technique, Denise, her legs and arms

:46:49.:46:53.

are going 1 million miles an hour. Absolutely. It is like she has been

:46:53.:46:57.

wound up like a little bowl and once she gets out the block, it is really

:46:57.:47:02.

staccato, almost like one of the old staccato, almost like one of the old

:47:02.:47:06.

East German styles of running, very crisp, very contained and very

:47:06.:47:12.

powerful. She is just raw power. This was the Diamond League a few

:47:12.:47:16.

weeks ago, the Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium. This was the

:47:16.:47:24.

heat. It was a competent sprint. We heat. It was a competent sprint. We

:47:24.:47:26.

were all excited and ready to watch a phenomenal final, but when I

:47:27.:47:30.

watched the line-up in the final, I did not think she wanted to be

:47:30.:47:37.

there. It just started to remain -- to rain. I was thinking to myself,

:47:37.:47:43.

she could be saving herself for better climates. You know what by

:47:43.:47:48.

prediction is. Before you say this, let's see this graphic, which gives

:47:48.:47:55.

you the top ten women of all time. I am hoping we have got this graphic!

:47:55.:47:56.

am hoping we have got this graphic! We can see where Shelly-Ann

:47:56.:48:01.

Fraser-Pryce sits on that list. You think she can go a bit higher.

:48:01.:48:05.

think at these championships, she will lift herself to second. That is

:48:05.:48:15.
:48:15.:48:19.

a big call. Flo-Jo is at the top, Marion Jones still in there. The top

:48:19.:48:24.

one should be 1988. I thought I would just add that in! Thank you

:48:24.:48:32.

very much. ! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is looking on great form. Carmelita

:48:32.:48:36.

is looking on great form. Carmelita Jeter, not quite so good. No, she

:48:36.:48:41.

started of the year pretty well, but then she has picked up a niggling

:48:41.:48:46.

injury. I thought it might see her out for the rest of the year. She

:48:46.:48:50.

looked so out of sorts recently, almost finishing last in the 200m,

:48:50.:48:55.

but she has picked herself up and has run really well again. I don't

:48:55.:49:02.

think she is quite on the same form she was last year and in 2011. We

:49:02.:49:06.

will see. I think the danger woman for these championships, let's look

:49:06.:49:12.

for these championships, let's look at her in 2011. A great style of

:49:12.:49:16.

running. She is very powerful. What she has done to add strength to this

:49:16.:49:21.

100m is really developing her 200m. I speed and endurance has made all

:49:21.:49:25.

the difference to these times. She's still the second fastest woman ever

:49:25.:49:30.

over the 100m but she will have their work cut out at the

their work cut out at the championships. The big names are

:49:33.:49:34.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and their work cut out at the

championships. The big names are but Lessing Okagbare Ray has been a real

surprise package. -- Lessing Okagbare Ray. Yes, she won the 100m

:49:48.:49:52.

herself at the Anniversary Games, so we know what had talent is. Every

:49:52.:50:01.

single performance, she has given better. It is a big wow factor. But

:50:01.:50:05.

we have to put that into the equation. Talking about Blessing

:50:15.:50:18.

Okagbare overload jump -- the long jump final as the night. Blessing

:50:18.:50:23.

Okagbare could be a factor there. Yes, she is working with John Smith,

:50:23.:50:28.

the same coach as Carmelita Jeter. It is an interesting dynamic in that

:50:28.:50:32.

group. She has really come into her own this year. She is the danger

:50:32.:50:35.

woman and could come to be championships and upset the party,

:50:35.:50:39.

not only in the sprinting, but also in the long jump. And what about

:50:39.:50:43.

Asha Philip? She is a British athlete who has had some terrible

:50:43.:50:52.

injury problems stop. We thought that her career in athletics was

:50:52.:50:56.

over after a knee injury, but she has worked with her coach

:50:56.:51:01.

consistently and has really come on in leaps and bounds. She is great

:51:01.:51:06.

indoors and has her work cut out. These girls are not playing about.

:51:06.:51:09.

They are shifting, and she will have to get close to her personal best to

:51:09.:51:13.

get through to the next round and proceed. Some of the other names,

:51:13.:51:19.

Colin, and when we look back to the US trials a couple of months ago,

:51:19.:51:24.

the 100m was dominated by names we have never heard of. Jelena Guest,

the championships, these young ladies were fresh out of the big

:51:30.:51:38.

events with great form already. Bit was almost like an Olympic final.

:51:38.:51:48.
:51:48.:51:50.

was ridiculous. That is what they do in America with the long jump and

:51:50.:51:56.

Mikel -- and triple gym. They will turn down the home straight

:51:56.:51:59.

depending on which way the wind is going. They allow that to happen.

:51:59.:52:03.

That is the way they want to run it, with their rules. Athletes will

:52:03.:52:06.

never complain because they always get the advantage of that. ? And

:52:06.:52:11.

that is as it should. It should be athlete centred. Athletes should

:52:11.:52:16.

come first and they want to choose the quick times, because we

:52:16.:52:20.

gravitate towards those US trials to see what the latest new talent is

:52:20.:52:26.

that is coming out. I think it is brilliant. Talking about new talent,

:52:26.:52:29.

it is all about the collegiate system in America. These athletes

:52:29.:52:38.

have been running every weekend since January. Yes, they must be

:52:38.:52:42.

exhausted. Some of the US athletes struggled with their form in

:52:42.:52:48.

Europe. Now they have had a bit of a break, I am hoping that they can

:52:48.:52:53.

return to that same kind of form. I want to see a genuine race.

:52:53.:52:56.

Otherwise, it will be a demonstration for Shelly-Ann

:52:56.:53:02.

Fraser-Pryce. I am committing to that! You have really backed,

:53:02.:53:07.

completely and utterly. I think Blessing Okagbare is looking good.

:53:07.:53:12.

Her 200m has come on strongly. I can't wait. I think this will be

:53:12.:53:17.

more exciting than the men's 100m. Yes, because we know who is going to

:53:17.:53:25.

win that. Well, we say that, but two years ago he got a. . Octavious

in my hospital bed, I did not think anything could happen and I thought

I was going to give up my career. I actually got myself into an ideal

until the last minute. You got all the excitement in one fell swoop.

You got the time and place on the team, and it that exhilaration.

but you have two take a competition was the youth champion. Yes, she has

:58:56.:58:59.

worked hard to be in this situation, both physically and

:58:59.:59:03.

mentally. I think our place is well-deserved on this team, and I am

:59:03.:59:07.

pleased to say that with the work she has done, bearing in mind the

:59:08.:59:14.

preparation, that she can just get past that 11.20 barrier. That is a

:59:14.:59:18.

big barrier for female sprinters. And hopefully progress to the next

:59:18.:59:22.

round. That would be a big achievement. It would be. For an

:59:22.:59:26.

athlete like this, Asha Philip, every race is like a final. She has

:59:26.:59:30.

to approach it, there is no slacking off, no room for error. She has got

:59:31.:59:34.

to start well, and we know she can do that. That's will share the best

of luck. And Kerron Stewart from Jamaica. Yellow madness, she is the

This is by no means a foregone conclusion. You heard in Asha

:00:26.:00:29.

Philip's own words, to be running there at all in the rather close

:00:29.:00:33.

Moscow heat on the start line is something of an achievement itself,

given her background. There is ankle, she is in lane four. Kerron

Stewart is in lane six. -- there is Anderson. You talk about the young

American sprinters coming through, she is not that young, 26, but

eventually finding our way through. There is Kerron Stewart, just

finding her self they are. She was pipped at the post by Shelly-Ann

Fraser-Pryce at the Olympics. Anderson and Kerron Stewart are the

two women who have gone under 11 seconds this season. Look at Tatjana

The second heat of the decathlon discus is underway. Damian Warner in

fourth place before this event had a good hurdles this morning, but his

:05:18.:05:23.

fourth place is under a wee bit of pressure. That could well be a

:05:23.:05:27.

season's best performance for the Canadian, he is the leading

:05:27.:05:32.

Commonwealth athlete out there at the moment. One cannot help feeling

:05:32.:05:37.

sorrow for Ashley Bryant, Britain's entrant into this World Championship

decathlon, but he had a hamstring problem a few days ago when he was

in training. Here's just spectator now. 44.13, a season's best, still

now. 44.13, a season's best, still in fourth. Gunnar Nixon, you get the

:05:57.:06:00.

impression he is going to have to break his lifetime best performance

:06:00.:06:05.

to maintain a medal position at the end of this event. He has hooked

:06:05.:06:08.

that one a little bit, but it is well over 40 metres and that could

:06:08.:06:18.
:06:18.:06:20.

be a lifetime best. He was down in fifth place. He is heading towards

:06:20.:06:27.

around 700 points or thereabouts if it is a lifetime best performance.

:06:27.:06:36.

But can he claw his way up from fifth place? 42.38, it is a lifetime

:06:36.:06:44.

best, but the American is still down in fifth. It is very, very warm in

:06:44.:06:49.

:08:40.:08:46.

Her dad used to coach her in her earlier career, but she is very,

:08:46.:08:52.

very fast. 10.85 she ran, to win the American champions. That was with a

:08:52.:08:59.

following wind of 1.8. We have no wind at all, a little breeze would

:08:59.:09:09.
:09:09.:09:23.

be welcome. The first three to go athlete just set Martina Pretelli

off Martina Pretelli. I think there will be a warning. It is, it is a

:10:06.:10:07.

warning. It has not been given as a false start. That is reasonably

:10:32.:10:36.

She ran in the preliminary rounds in the Olympics, there are no

:10:36.:10:40.

preliminary rounds here, unlike the men. The women come straight in even

:10:40.:10:49.

if they don't have a qualifying time. Pretelli is there, but no

penalty, she was set off by got out of the blocks, goodness me,

:11:03.:11:12.

and this is only the heats! 10.94 into a very slight breeze. That is

:11:12.:11:19.

big-time, isn't it. That is the big stage performance and it is only the

:11:19.:11:26.

heats, mind you. She is good, she is very good, she has been a promising

punched -- psyched up for that, wasn't she? English Gardner, 21

the exuberance of youth. In the 100m, we have the semifinals

:11:52.:11:57.

tomorrow, go out and sure what you can do, lay down a marker. English

:11:57.:12:02.

Gardner certainly did that, an astonishing start. She has taken a

:12:02.:12:05.

good few metres out of her rivals are alongside her. Shelley Anne

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:16.

Brooks is a very decent sprinter, as is Lalova, but they were left

:12:16.:12:23.

floundering by English Gardner. You can see the intensity, a sort of

:12:23.:12:28.

flailing style, but it was a very, very impressive run.

:12:28.:12:32.

That is a classic John Smith action, he likes to go for that, and

:12:32.:12:37.

action, he likes to go for that, and he will be delighted with that.

:12:37.:12:42.

You have done exactly what your coach told you to do, but that was

:12:42.:12:45.

mightily impressive. Thank you, I went out there and try to do what my

:12:45.:12:51.

coach told me to do. You are on the big stage, the World

:12:51.:12:57.

Championships, but you did not seem fazed by the occasion. It is

:12:57.:13:03.

something you get used to, each meat is what it is, it is a meet. I came

:13:03.:13:12.

out lucky this time. How important was it to make a statement today?

:13:12.:13:16.

have been running bad for a couple of weeks, it was important to come

:13:16.:13:20.

out here and roll a little bit. The times are fast but I think I have

:13:20.:13:30.
:13:30.:13:32.

more in me. Great to see you, good Just watch this, she explodes out of

:13:32.:13:37.

the blocks, that is the quickest so far. When she is up in her action,

:13:37.:13:41.

she is small, but that bigger drive, you have to get what you have got,

:13:41.:13:46.

you have to use every bit of power you can generate. We talked about

:13:46.:13:51.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce having it, she is much stockier than Gardner,

:13:51.:14:00.

21 years old. That may just be a little bit showing her cards early

:14:00.:14:07.

year. You have to have another level to go through through the rounds,

:14:07.:14:11.

that is what the good athletes can do. If she has more levels than

:14:11.:14:17.

that, that will be interesting. 10.94, the winning time. Myriam

:14:17.:14:27.
:14:27.:14:28.

Soumare, with Melissa Breen, are currently sitting as fastest losers.

:14:28.:14:33.

Yes, that was eyes bulging all-out from English Gardner. Shelly-Ann

:14:33.:14:37.

Fraser-Pryce has seen enough challenges not to be fazed by that

:14:37.:14:47.
:14:47.:14:48.

but I wonder how she will handle this one. There are a couple who may

:14:48.:14:54.

be able to push. She has saved her least impressive performance of the

:14:54.:15:00.

season for the Diamond League Games in London a few weeks ago.

:15:00.:15:03.

in London a few weeks ago. Michelle-Lee Ahye from Trinidad and

:15:04.:15:13.

Tobago may be able to keep in the competition. We have got Franciela

:15:13.:15:22.

Krasucki from Brazil in lane two. And we have Italia Pohrebnyak --

:15:22.:15:32.
:15:32.:15:46.

Natalia Pohrebniak of Ukraine in the just now. Six feet in total in

:15:46.:15:52.

this winning's 100m, the first round. This is heat number format.

:15:52.:16:02.

It is the first three to go through automatically. Shelly-Ann

:16:02.:16:05.

Fraser-Pryce in the middle there, in lane four, twice the Olympic

:16:05.:16:15.
:16:15.:16:20.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce lifts her head and drives those legs and

:16:20.:16:26.

begins to jog. She starts to accelerate again, enough to get the

:16:26.:16:31.

victory, 11.16. A different approach from Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Very

:16:31.:16:38.

different to English Gardner, he went as far down -- as hard and as

:16:38.:16:44.

fast as she could. But Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did the damage early on

:16:44.:16:52.

and switched off a little bit. She took victory. The good medal

:16:52.:16:57.

contenders ease their way through. She is always very good at this,

:16:57.:17:00.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She gets out the first 40 yards, easy through

:17:00.:17:10.
:17:10.:17:12.

and then she's good enough to pick it up again. Out of the blocks, get

:17:12.:17:17.

the stark light, get into your running, drive-through, which she

:17:17.:17:23.

does as well as anybody else. Then see where you are at, nice and

:17:23.:17:29.

relaxed, I am already out in front, I can ease off a bit, which she

:17:29.:17:33.

does, but be aware of what is going on around. She realises that she

:17:33.:17:39.

still wants to win this race and that is when the Brazilian comes

:17:39.:17:43.

alongside, and she is aware of that and she picks it up of that and she

:17:43.:17:47.

picked it up a bit. Pretty much a perfect first round to me.

:17:47.:17:53.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, there is plenty more to come from her. We can

:17:53.:18:03.
:18:03.:18:16.

contrast in heat. Yes. But I think both the athletes did what they

:18:16.:18:20.

would have been told to do. I know how John Smith works. I think what

:18:20.:18:23.

he would have said to her initially, because she has been running so

:18:23.:18:28.

badly on the circuit, outrageously badly for an athlete that has run

:18:29.:18:34.

10.85, the bill have said, you have worked hard now. I want you to go

:18:34.:18:40.

flat out in this round. She was just shy of her personal best. It was a

:18:40.:18:45.

good, strong performance, but delivered as a coach would have told

:18:45.:18:51.

to do. I am not sure we have ever seen such intensity in round one.

:18:51.:18:57.

Not at this level. Fraser-Pryce has the same -- different style of

:18:57.:19:01.

running in this event. But she was literally eyeballs out. She says

:19:01.:19:08.

that she hopes there is more to come. I was staggered by what I saw.

:19:08.:19:14.

She was going for it. And a really interesting comment that you made,

:19:14.:19:19.

the idea that the coach realised she needed confidence. Shelly-Ann

:19:19.:19:26.

Fraser-Pryce has been there and done that and being the Olympic champion,

:19:26.:19:35.

about 25 metres... Yes, he will have said, get yourself out in front so

:19:35.:19:40.

you can just switch back and relax. That is exactly what she did.

:19:40.:19:48.

needed to be careful, because she rang 20 metres and then started

:19:48.:19:53.

jogging a bit. Yes, she was using her peripheral vision and could see

:19:53.:19:56.

the Brazilian coming towards you, and you don't want to make any

:19:56.:20:00.

unnecessary mistakes at this level. We have seen it before when we think

:20:00.:20:03.

-- athletes think they are safe and then shut down and then don't make

:20:03.:20:11.

it through to the next round. But she was aware. English Gardner, her

:20:11.:20:14.

coach obviously believed that she needed something to build her

:20:14.:20:23.

confidence. Yes, because there are huge expectations. You win the

:20:23.:20:26.

trials in the US and then you come to Europe and everybody annihilates

:20:26.:20:33.

you. She was not running well on the circuit. This was really a necessary

:20:33.:20:36.

evil, that performance, and I think that is why she was so pleased,

:20:36.:20:42.

because John will go back and say, that's done, let's forget it. You

:20:42.:20:46.

know you're in good shape. Now it is all about performance. She is still

:20:46.:20:50.

a young girl, just out of the collegiate system. It is her first

:20:50.:20:55.

time on the circuit in Europe. She has been injured, she has been hurt,

:20:55.:21:05.
:21:05.:21:05.

but what a scintillating run. next heat, nothing Okagbare, --

:21:05.:21:08.

Blessing Okagbare an athlete that many people will not know, but they

:21:08.:21:13.

will know that after the championships. I do think that she

:21:13.:21:18.

is the danger woman. She has come on in leaps and bounds in the cast --

:21:18.:21:23.

past couple of years and has made a decision to go for three medals

:21:23.:21:27.

potentially at the championships. She is looking particularly good in

:21:27.:21:37.
:21:37.:21:38.

the 100m. I am curious to see how Okagbare, in the long jump final

:21:38.:21:48.
:21:48.:21:51.

tonight. But we will also see her in the 200m as well. This is Ana

:21:51.:21:57.

Claudia Silva from Brazil. She is the South American champion and

:21:57.:22:05.

record holder. Blessing Okagbare is also coached by John Smith in the

:22:06.:22:11.

United States. She has been having a good year, managing a season well

:22:11.:22:21.

between the 200m, the long jump, performing well in all disciplines.

:22:21.:22:24.

Stella Akakpo from France is in lane nine, the new European junior

:22:24.:22:34.
:22:34.:22:58.

champion. Schillonie Calvert from One more to come after this.

:22:58.:23:03.

Carmelita Jeter, the defending champion, and we have already talked

:23:04.:23:10.

about the performance from English Gardner. Surely Blessing Okagbare

:23:10.:23:20.
:23:20.:23:24.

just made sure she qualifies OK. across half of the track at the top

:23:24.:23:34.
:23:34.:23:38.

us, Asha Philip qualified in heat two. A good run from her to get into

:23:39.:23:48.
:23:49.:24:09.

the best start. Nothing Okagbare is leading through here. She wants to

:24:09.:24:15.

win it, though, and stiff enough to get to the front. She wins it, and

:24:15.:24:20.

that one went pretty much with the script. She did not do any more than

:24:20.:24:23.

she absolutely had to do. She will be coming back tonight for the long

:24:23.:24:27.

jump final and I am sure she will want to get away as quickly as

:24:27.:24:37.
:24:37.:24:37.

final. All smiles for Blessing Okagbare. No dramatics there.

:24:37.:24:43.

the key for her is a good start. She is a tall woman with a long stride.

:24:43.:24:48.

A great finish to the 100m. She has more than enough here. She may have

:24:48.:24:52.

to get out a quicker to challenge the likes of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

:24:52.:25:01.

in the final itself. A very easy style for the Nigerian. Comfortably

:25:01.:25:11.
:25:11.:25:12.

that performance will stop it looks so comfortable. I just wanted to go

:25:12.:25:16.

through the first round, stay relaxed and focused. I have a long

:25:16.:25:23.

jump to do today, so tomorrow is going to be a big one to! When we

:25:23.:25:28.

saw you at the Anniversary Games, you set two African records. What

:25:28.:25:33.

has that and feel confident? I have been working hard and everything has

:25:33.:25:41.

been going well. We wish you well been going well. We wish you well

:25:41.:25:44.

for tonight. Thank you very much. She will be off to get herself ready

:25:44.:25:50.

for that. 11.03 is the winning time. Silver looks good as well. Bad news

:25:50.:25:55.

for Stella Akakpo am I can already tell her that she is not fast enough

:25:55.:26:04.

to go through as the fastest loser. That would currently stand at

:26:04.:26:14.
:26:14.:26:28.

it quicker if she's going to compete with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

:26:28.:26:32.

her start is quite shocking. It is not the most efficient use of the

:26:32.:26:39.

blocks. She literally just flopped out. She needs to really drive and

:26:39.:26:43.

use the blocks well and power out. She is a lovely looking run and you

:26:43.:26:47.

can see the relaxation in her face, her arms and shoulders. She is an

:26:47.:26:51.

effective sprinter, but I still think with the likes of Carmelita

:26:51.:26:55.

Jeter and Fraser-Pryce, and English Gardner, as we saw, she cannot

:26:55.:27:03.

afford to give them a couple of metres at the start. That said, she

:27:03.:27:06.

is just a fraction behind Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's world lead. So when

:27:06.:27:11.

she needs to run quick and get out, she can. Yes, she does all her

:27:11.:27:18.

running in the back end of the race. Because she is so tall, what she

:27:18.:27:21.

does is get into her upright running as quickly as possible so that she

:27:21.:27:26.

can use her big, strong stride. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is more of a

:27:26.:27:29.

complete sprinter and will push out of the blocks very quickly and go

:27:29.:27:33.

through all the phases well. Because she has been running so be 200m

:27:33.:27:42.

races this year is -- she is very competitive. Carmelita Jeter, a few

:27:42.:27:46.

problems with injury. It will be fascinating to see how she goes.

:27:46.:27:51.

Absolutely. You can't really tell much in the early rounds. All the

:27:51.:27:54.

girls so far have looked relaxed. Carmelita Jeter will want to stab

:27:54.:28:01.

her authority on this event. I can't see anyone really troubling her in

:28:01.:28:11.
:28:11.:28:11.

the line-up. Let's hope she is ready Smith, has been not to take any

:28:11.:28:19.

chances. She did not race in the US championships. She already had a

:28:19.:28:24.

qualification. What sort of form is the defending champion in? She's

:28:24.:28:34.
:28:34.:28:46.

Some could keep her honest. If she's anywhere close to her best, and her

:28:46.:28:52.

best is good indeed, she will be challenging for the gold medal. But

:28:52.:28:57.

we have not seen that this season yet. You see that massive strapping

:28:57.:29:01.

there, the tape on the right quad, that is what has been bothering her

:29:01.:29:09.

for much of the season. It is patched up. Then it starts to play

:29:09.:29:18.

with your mind as well. The hundred metres is a psychological affair as

:29:18.:29:23.

much as a physical affair. This woman is capable of very bad times,

:29:24.:29:29.

10.6 for her best. She is the defending world champion. -- 10.64

:29:29.:29:38.

is her best. She did not start in the final of the Anniversary Games

:29:38.:29:48.
:29:48.:29:55.

in London. Who knows? We will find runner as well. She has also run

:29:55.:30:05.
:30:05.:30:41.

10.91 over the 100m. She is quicker nonstarter.

:30:41.:30:51.
:30:51.:31:04.

The final heat of the women's 100m. there are micro for a moment,

:31:04.:31:14.
:31:14.:31:15.

instead is -- it is shiny to work -- Sheniqua Ferguson setting the pace.

:31:15.:31:24.

11.22 for Sheniqua Ferguson, away from Jeter. She is the champion, so

:31:24.:31:29.

attention focuses on her, but it was Ferguson who took the victory, and

:31:29.:31:37.

the jury is still out, I think, on Carmelita Jeter. This bit of the

:31:37.:31:41.

race is better, it is the start, isn't it? It is very difficult to

:31:41.:31:48.

tell this year, just qualifying, Ahoure is looking good, as well. It

:31:48.:31:52.

is not a good action, a bit ragged out of the blocks, for me. She will

:31:52.:31:56.

have to work on that. Whether she is just a bit relaxed and thinking I am

:31:56.:32:01.

going to get through no problem, she was a bit untidy coming out of the

:32:01.:32:08.

blocks, she will lose so much ground on the Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. We

:32:08.:32:12.

saw how quick English Gardner was coming out of the blocks. Just, to

:32:12.:32:20.

me, you have to drive out of the blocks. If you have a quad injury,

:32:20.:32:23.

the guys will know better, I am sure they are talking about this

:32:23.:32:29.

upstairs, it hinders you. It must be in the back of her mind, but she is

:32:29.:32:31.

safely through, but not yet producing anything that will worry

:32:31.:32:40.

the others. She may not have been able to pound out the starts in

:32:40.:32:44.

training with that quad injury. Colin Jackson will tell us more

:32:44.:32:49.

about that. It doesn't really punish her in this round, but it may come

:32:49.:32:56.

home to roost in the semifinals and the final, if she gets there.

:32:56.:32:59.

think even the semifinals, she is going to have to be better than

:32:59.:33:04.

that. I am sure she will be, she is a very experienced athlete and she

:33:04.:33:10.

will know that what happened there means she has to get out better.

:33:10.:33:14.

This is just the first round, it is just a case of getting through, and

:33:14.:33:18.

when you have had the trials and tribulations she has had you want to

:33:18.:33:23.

make sure you qualify first of all. I think we are going to hear from

:33:23.:33:28.

I think we are going to hear from Carmelita Jeter now.

:33:28.:33:33.

Not the ideal preparation for you, how did you feel?

:33:33.:33:36.

It actually felt OK, it has been a rough year, so I am happy to be

:33:37.:33:46.

here. Were there any doubt you would make it? Yes, there were. We can see

:33:46.:33:50.

you are heavily strapped up, how does it feel to have a quadricep

:33:50.:33:57.

injury when you are trying to explode out of the block. It is very

:33:57.:34:01.

difficult, but I will have to look difficult, but I will have to look

:34:01.:34:06.

at it tomorrow. Thank you. Trying to make remain positive but I

:34:06.:34:14.

think she knows and we know that that's start made trouble. Ice that

:34:14.:34:24.
:34:24.:34:25.

It is still Ashton Eaton leading the way in the decathlon. Damian

:34:25.:34:30.

Warner, the Canadian, trying to find something in the last round of the

:34:30.:34:35.

discus. Just shy of the 45 metres line. Not a bad throw for the

:34:36.:34:41.

Canadian. We will see a lot of this guy in Glasgow next year when he

:34:41.:34:48.

comes to the Commonwealth Games. I am sure Ashley Bryant Britain and

:34:48.:34:55.

mainly -- maybe even Daniel Lord, as well, another good prospect in

:34:55.:35:01.

British decathlon, maybe bringing home some medals. His best remains

:35:01.:35:08.

44.13 and he will stay in fourth place. Not many changes to talk

:35:08.:35:12.

about, except that Michael Schrader with his final throw has moved into

:35:12.:35:17.

second place for the first time. Gunnar Nixon, who was in second

:35:17.:35:21.

place overnight is down in fifth. Still, the world record-holder and

:35:21.:35:26.

Olympic champion, Ashton Eaton, leads the way, and it is Germany in

:35:26.:35:32.

second and third place. Three events to go.

:35:32.:35:36.

JONATHAN EDWARDS: Ashton Eaton is going well, not quite torched --

:35:36.:35:41.

going well, not quite torched -- such good news for Carmelita Jeter.

:35:41.:35:46.

No, it was a very different Carmelita Jeter than I expected.

:35:46.:35:51.

Usually she is very positive and upbeat. She is looking troubled, not

:35:51.:35:58.

the focused athlete we have come to expect. Very distracted, she did not

:35:58.:36:03.

have the best start at all. I was looking at the strapping on her

:36:03.:36:07.

thigh and those on her knees, and I thought, I have not seen one like

:36:07.:36:11.

that before. I wonder what other injuries she may be carrying. It is

:36:12.:36:15.

just a shame to see her come to these championships not quite in the

:36:15.:36:21.

form she would have hoped. It is always a difficult decision

:36:21.:36:27.

for an athlete, isn't it, Colin, to pull out? When you can run fast, to

:36:28.:36:33.

choose not to come to one of the majors of the year is a hard call.

:36:33.:36:37.

It is always easy for us to question the athletes when they don't deliver

:36:37.:36:42.

what we expect them to be capable of delivering, but we have all been

:36:42.:36:46.

there. Those really grim winter months, training, it is for a

:36:46.:36:52.

reason, to deliver the championships. By hook or by crook,

:36:52.:36:56.

you want to deliver your best performance. You always think, I

:36:56.:37:01.

have a chance. You always have that hope you can miraculously turn

:37:01.:37:06.

something on that will bring you to a championship like this.

:37:06.:37:10.

Certainly, Jeter's body language was not of an athlete who thought she

:37:10.:37:17.

could turn it around. She said she stands a chance in the next round,

:37:18.:37:23.

but she has to work on her mental state in this championship.

:37:23.:37:27.

It cannot be easy to see the other girls in your group training and

:37:27.:37:32.

competing so well when you are way off your best. A different level is

:37:32.:37:38.

Asha Philip, she ran well given her expectations.

:37:38.:37:42.

She ran really well. The British athletes were asked to come near,

:37:42.:37:47.

get close to your best, and she did exactly that. What a great start

:37:47.:37:51.

from her, she needed that to set up her race. She put herself in

:37:51.:37:56.

contention from the start and held her form. Not much to criticise,

:37:56.:38:01.

more of the same please, Asha Philip. What is great for her is

:38:01.:38:05.

that she gets to go into the semifinal against all of the big

:38:05.:38:11.

girls, big development step for her. It is a huge step, she said herself

:38:11.:38:15.

in the interview is that what is special is that she feels she really

:38:15.:38:19.

belongs in this kind of company, that is a good place for an athlete

:38:19.:38:24.

to be. To push myself forward again, I am hoping Asha Philip gets an

:38:24.:38:29.

injury free winter because I think you will see her really, really get

:38:29.:38:35.

herself on the world level next year if she has a smooth winter. She is

:38:35.:38:38.

super talented. The morning session is just about done here for the Liz

:38:38.:38:42.

Nicky Stadium, we will look ahead at Nicky Stadium, we will look ahead at

:38:42.:38:46.

the evening session. It is a big night here in the stadium, we have

:38:46.:38:49.

the conclusion of the decathlon, Ashton Eaton looking to add a world

:38:49.:38:55.

title to his Olympic title. That big long jump from the British

:38:55.:38:59.

perspective, Shara Proctor going for gold. Blessing Okagbare Barry, is

:38:59.:39:08.

there, as well. Then the men's 100m semifinals. -- Blessing Okagbare.

:39:08.:39:12.

Later on, the women's 400m semifinals, Christine Ohuruogu is

:39:12.:39:20.

running particularly well. Then Sandra Perkovic is in the women's

:39:20.:39:28.

discus final and the decathlon 1500m, then the women's 10,000m and

:39:28.:39:33.

the men's 100m final. Let's look back at yesterday at the first round

:39:33.:39:43.
:39:43.:39:52.

The final heat of the men's 100m, start. Slipping through, the ease

:39:52.:40:01.

into the front, it will be very tight for second place. The top

:40:01.:40:08.

three will have to be sorted out three will have to be sorted out

:40:08.:40:14.

afterwards. It is the business end for you tomorrow, argue confident

:40:14.:40:23.

you are going to take care of As if by magic, Dominic Dale,

:40:23.:40:28.

another champion with a world record, a bit like Usain Bolt dead

:40:28.:40:36.

in Beijing. Let's look back to that women's 100m know that you have with

:40:36.:40:40.

us -- now that we have you with us. What did you make of the early

:40:40.:40:44.

skirmishes? I have said all week I thought this would be the most

:40:44.:40:49.

interesting race, the women's 100m is good to be the most competitive

:40:49.:40:55.

race. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce ran 50 metres.

:40:55.:41:05.
:41:05.:41:05.

Hardly 30 metres, she ran about 30! No, 15! Blessing Okagbare was

:41:05.:41:13.

impressive, she is a big, powerful women. -- woman. She, essentially,

:41:13.:41:19.

can compete to win the three events she is entered. Ultimately, the 100m

:41:19.:41:26.

will come down to Jamaica versus the USA, with a spring fling of others.

:41:26.:41:32.

-- with a sprinkling of others. What did you make of the intensity of

:41:32.:41:38.

English Gardner? I actually liked it! This is the

:41:38.:41:42.

first time on an international stage for her, and in US history they have

:41:42.:41:47.

always showed up and everyone has backed down. I think English is

:41:47.:41:55.

bringing that back. She came out here and ran the entire way. I think

:41:55.:42:03.

she is also sending a little, little, tiny bit of a message out to

:42:03.:42:06.

everyone that she is the US champion and plans on being a bigger champion

:42:06.:42:13.

than that. Do you think she was sending a message to herself? Colin

:42:13.:42:16.

made the point she was running so badly on the circuit, John Smith

:42:16.:42:20.

said to her get out there and run a decent race to build up your

:42:20.:42:27.

confidence? That could be part of it. It is her first time you, John

:42:27.:42:31.

is her coach, he has been here before, Dean was exactly what it

:42:31.:42:40.

takes. I think she had to come out and establish herself. -- he knows

:42:40.:42:42.

exactly what it takes. She understands winning new is very

:42:42.:42:50.

important. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is Colin Jackson's Vic, she -- he is

:42:50.:42:59.

talking number two in the all-time list. Do you agree? I went to agree

:42:59.:43:08.

with my good man. Listen, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is someone who, in

:43:08.:43:13.

every single major competition, has come to win. I made a huge mistake

:43:13.:43:16.

at the Anniversary Games of saying she always has a perfect start, then

:43:16.:43:24.

she had a bad start and got beaten. I think she is back now to exactly

:43:25.:43:27.

who we know. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is one of the quickest starters I

:43:27.:43:33.

have ever seen, men or women. It is like she is a bullet, road of a gun.

:43:33.:43:38.

At 15 metres, I have never been in a race that at 15 metres I can looked

:43:38.:43:42.

around and say, I already have a gap of three metres, let me look around

:43:42.:43:48.

and shut it off. She is that special. I agree with Colin, I think

:43:48.:43:51.

she is definitely the odds-on favourite to repeat as world

:43:51.:43:57.

champion. You mention your pacemaker in the

:43:57.:44:03.

100m, he got out... No, no, no, let's get that out of

:44:03.:44:07.

the way! There are a tonne of athletes that have amazing starts,

:44:07.:44:14.

and I and my career and utilised all of them.

:44:14.:44:19.

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce may be the favourite, but it is a case of how

:44:19.:44:23.

well Blessing Okagbare can get out or if she can run her down at the

:44:23.:44:33.
:44:33.:44:33.

end. No matter what, blessing is a bigger, stronger woman. I think that

:44:33.:44:38.

if Shelly-Ann gets out, everyone will have to catch her. One of the

:44:38.:44:43.

great things about Shelly-Ann having such an amazing first 30 metres is

:44:43.:44:47.

that she goes out then it is everyone's job to catch her. We all

:44:47.:44:52.

know when you run this stage, a lot of people panic. She has been so

:44:52.:44:59.

much stronger this year, as well. She used to get caught by the likes

:44:59.:45:05.

of Jeter at 70 metres, but now she is able to utilise that speed a

:45:05.:45:10.

little bit and hold her form, which is fantastic.

:45:10.:45:13.

That is what she has been doing all year. We have noticed that. I was

:45:13.:45:22.

never really worried about her 100m times. She runs very well all year,

:45:22.:45:29.

and in the 200m. Usain Bolt ran all year very well in the 200m. He got

:45:29.:45:34.

his legs back sharper again for the 100m. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has

:45:34.:45:39.

been doing the same thing with a better first third. What is going to

:45:39.:45:44.

happen is that Shelly-Ann is going to get out and she is going to dare

:45:44.:45:51.

every single one of those people, Blessing included, to catch her.

:45:51.:45:56.

Let's talk about the men's 100m final tonight, it is hard to look

:45:56.:46:02.

beyond Usain Bolt, isn't it? Yes!

:46:03.:46:09.

Please, expand! You know what? He was rusty in

:46:09.:46:16.

London. Last night, Colin and I were talking, I have never seen him so

:46:17.:46:23.

serious. I think that the last time he was on, and I think he

:46:23.:46:27.

understands the difference between the Olympics and the world stage,

:46:27.:46:32.

for athlete at his level. He understood that the last time he was

:46:32.:46:35.

here he made a massive mistake that cost him the World Championships.

:46:35.:46:42.

Mind you, his team-mate took it, so at least it was kept in the camp. I

:46:42.:46:51.

think maybe he has the weight of the responsibility of everyone looking

:46:51.:46:56.

at him being the greatest ambassador of the sport, but he has also taken

:46:56.:47:02.

it back, doing what he is here to do, which is to win the 100m. He was

:47:02.:47:06.

very serious yesterday, got out, ran a great 30 and did the same thing

:47:06.:47:13.

Shelly-Ann did. He got out, saw exactly where he was position wise,

:47:13.:47:19.

and I don't think anyone can beat him. Ultimately, Justin Gatlin, who

:47:19.:47:26.

has been a world champion and Olympic champion, I think think that

:47:26.:47:34.

Justin is definitely the one that is the hungriest man in the field and I

:47:34.:47:40.

believe there is also a sprinkling of young athletes.

:47:40.:47:48.

Let's mention that failed Usain Bolt has defeated for the 100m. Obviously

:47:48.:47:51.

the scandals with Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, does that weigh

:47:51.:47:58.

heavily on him? Coming through as a Canadian sprinter, world champion,

:47:58.:48:01.

did you feel a sense of responsibility with your performance

:48:01.:48:08.

with other competitors? Back then come if you lost me that

:48:08.:48:11.

question as we were all competing on the circuit, I would have said, no,

:48:11.:48:15.

I am just running a race. But, obviously, reflecting, you

:48:16.:48:19.

understand that it is much more than what it is, the weight is more than

:48:19.:48:26.

you it to be. Obviously, you also have to step back and understand it

:48:26.:48:31.

is really just about a race, and he has to fundamentally think about the

:48:31.:48:37.

little things he has to do to win the race. But I was, as retired

:48:37.:48:44.

athletes, retired champions, we really have to understand and look

:48:44.:48:49.

at him, because if he wins then everyone wins. The sport wins

:48:49.:48:54.

mostly. He wins, Jamaica wins another gold medal, Usain Bolt Boz

:48:54.:49:00.

Michael legendarily studies is still the same, but sport wins. I think he

:49:00.:49:03.

took it on himself quite actively to come out and make bold statements

:49:04.:49:08.

about the drug scandals and how much he felt he had to prove he was a

:49:08.:49:13.

talented individual, I am almost super human, I have been there as a

:49:13.:49:18.

teenager, as an under 23, I have been exceptional. I think, for

:49:18.:49:23.

income it is more than just the race. I think, yes, he wants to

:49:23.:49:29.

win, naturally, but he knows he is the global of this sport. You think

:49:29.:49:33.

of Chris Froome winning the Tour de France, and he has to answer a lot

:49:33.:49:37.

of questions he doesn't want to answer. He brings that seriousness

:49:37.:49:47.
:49:47.:49:51.

to them. One of the great things about not avoiding the topic and the

:49:51.:49:54.

conversation about drugs with the number one guy in the world is that

:49:54.:50:04.
:50:04.:50:07.

they asking a question and the -- is hit it right on the head. The

:50:07.:50:10.

massive separation that he has at the highest level is what I saw in

:50:10.:50:20.
:50:20.:50:22.

the 15-year-old in Jamaica. I never thought of my life that I would see

:50:22.:50:25.

somebody as spasticity has. But that is what he was doing them. As a

:50:25.:50:30.

15-year-old, he was the best in the world. He understands what it is

:50:30.:50:35.

right now. He addressed it. Now we can talk about the results that are

:50:35.:50:43.

happening on the track. You are based in Jamaica a lot of the time,

:50:43.:50:47.

and there is a huge hype around Usain Bolt wherever he goes. Is it

:50:47.:50:57.
:50:57.:51:00.

the same in Jamaica? The people except in -- accept him? I live in

:51:00.:51:03.

Jamaica in the winter. One of the great things about it is that every

:51:03.:51:08.

single Jamaica and is a celebrity in their own mind. Very serious! That

:51:08.:51:11.

is our culture. We are never impressed by anything or anyone, so

:51:11.:51:15.

I think that one of the greatest things, why people like to live

:51:15.:51:19.

there or go there is that people leave you alone. However, they

:51:19.:51:27.

expect you to do things. If Usain Bolt comes to the pitch -- the

:51:27.:51:31.

Olympic Games, or anyone representing Jamaica, people stop

:51:31.:51:35.

traffic to watch the competition, because the expectation is that

:51:35.:51:38.

every single one of those athletes that is representing Jamaica is

:51:38.:51:43.

bringing back a gold medal. Let's look at his competitors tonight. If

:51:43.:51:49.

there is one athlete who believes he can begin, it will be Justin Gatlin.

:51:49.:51:56.

Yes. Justin has been here. He has been a world champion, and Olympic

:51:56.:52:04.

champion. He totally understands what it takes to win. I was actually

:52:04.:52:08.

quite surprised that he took it as hard as he did, but I realise there

:52:08.:52:12.

are no longer fall rounds at World Championships, so he probably

:52:12.:52:16.

thought, I have one race today, two tomorrow, so today I am going to

:52:16.:52:24.

take it out really hard. I think the surprise mind for me might be Jimmy

:52:24.:52:32.

Vicaut from France. He is probably as big and as strong, maybe not as

:52:32.:52:36.

fast and technically sound as other sprinters, but he absolutely has top

:52:36.:52:42.

end speed as fast as all of these men in the field. If you can get out

:52:42.:52:47.

for the first 30 metres, he will do things that we are not expecting.

:52:47.:52:50.

Three British athletes got through to the semifinals. James Dasaolu was

:52:50.:52:54.

the one with a looking at beforehand. He did not qualify well.

:52:54.:53:04.
:53:04.:53:08.

Well, you saw Rusty -- rust on James. I don't have to tell anyone

:53:08.:53:14.

here, do have to be mentally at World Championships. It kind of

:53:14.:53:21.

showed a bit. His first 30 metres were terrible. When he got into his

:53:21.:53:27.

acceleration phase, he was looking at the TV to find out where he was

:53:27.:53:30.

that. You really have to be mentally focused. You really have to put the

:53:30.:53:36.

transition together in order to go through the next round. I think that

:53:36.:53:43.

James's huge talent if he is someone that can run 9.8 this weekend. I

:53:43.:53:49.

don't know what his preparation is. I don't know what a night of speed

:53:49.:53:54.

wiki has done over the last ten days. Certainly, he is someone that

:53:54.:54:01.

can do some really good things. It is going to be tough for Harry to

make it through. And Dwayne, I am a big fan of him, it is his last, I

:54:09.:54:13.

shouldn't say it is his last... He's a veteran! I am not telling him to

:54:13.:54:23.

retire. I need it is his last... He's a veteran of the sport. He has

:54:23.:54:28.

been here before and been in the finals. As a warrior, I know that

:54:28.:54:32.

Dwayne is going to get out there and give it his all. Going back to James

:54:32.:54:38.

Dasaolu briefly, do you think you almost came out expecting this leads

:54:38.:54:43.

to be easier. The Chinese boy would have shocked. It was almost like,

:54:43.:54:48.

what's going on here? It is not how I played it through in my mind.

:54:48.:54:52.

maybe this is a clear life lesson for James. It does not work that

:54:52.:54:57.

way. If you show up for the major championships, there is nobody on

:54:57.:55:02.

the starting line handing you a gold medal. He has almost been thrust

:55:02.:55:08.

into the limelight. Once you go underneath ten seconds, you get

:55:08.:55:11.

expectations, but he is still not a very seasoned Championship runner,

:55:11.:55:15.

so there's still a lot to learn for him. I think he made a bad call in

:55:15.:55:20.

his race, but you said, he has had hampered preparation and he said he

:55:20.:55:24.

has not done much work out of the blocks. That really showed. He will

:55:24.:55:29.

have to think and behave differently in the semifinal. Unfortunately,

:55:29.:55:38.

Denise, there is not a mentorship programme with your fellow

:55:38.:55:43.

competitors. They are not going to go, James, welcome! Why don't you go

:55:43.:55:48.

through? It is not going to happen! Unfortunately, he has to prepare

:55:48.:55:50.

himself psychologically and physically for a stage like this,

:55:50.:56:00.
:56:00.:56:01.

and when he is that Alan did, he has run sub ten, he has thrust himself

:56:01.:56:05.

into that psychology that I am now one of the men to beat. He has to

:56:05.:56:11.

show up, walk it and talk it and be it. Absolutely. Endless talking

:56:11.:56:17.

points on the men's 100m, that's for sure. But at another good chance of

:56:17.:56:21.

a medal this evening will be in the long jump. We are going to look at

:56:21.:56:27.

Shara Proctor's qualifying jump. It speaks for itself. It really was

:56:27.:56:31.

outstanding. It was. These qualification rounds are usually

:56:31.:56:35.

qualification rounds are usually very tough. You are not sure of what

:56:35.:56:39.

the conditions are like on the track. But she is an athlete that

:56:39.:56:44.

has had a great couple of seasons, aside from her unfortunate final in

:56:44.:56:51.

London last year. But qualification of 6.75, and she did business on the

:56:51.:56:55.

first jump. Spikes off, back to the village. She is ready. But she

:56:55.:57:00.

cannot make the mistake of thinking about medal for that final. This is

:57:00.:57:05.

the thing. Qualification and finals, you can see how far behind

:57:05.:57:09.

the board she is there, they are completely different things.

:57:09.:57:13.

remember when you were one of the big surprises, because we expected

:57:13.:57:18.

you to walk into the finals, and you you to walk into the finals, and you

:57:18.:57:22.

struggled into the qualifications because it is a demand on you. When

:57:22.:57:25.

there is a demand, it did you have to hit, it makes it more difficult.

:57:25.:57:31.

Of course, yesterday was yesterday. Today is a complete of the day. She

:57:31.:57:39.

has to refocus and gather herself. Jonathan, you are right, because you

:57:39.:57:42.

have to believe you can be a champion. Shara Proctor has to go

:57:42.:57:48.

out there and believe that today is her day. If you don't -- you don't

:57:48.:57:51.

get ahead of yourself and you don't let it play on your mind that you

:57:51.:57:57.

are the furthest qualifier. Ultimately, there should be a

:57:57.:58:05.

hunger. There was an expectation in London that she would be on top of

:58:05.:58:09.

the podium. It shows the difference in all the athletes that are

:58:09.:58:12.

competing in this year's World Championships that she came out, and

:58:12.:58:18.

if she means business, she can go back and relax and know that she is

:58:18.:58:22.

here at the right time. This opportunity, we talk about the

:58:22.:58:27.

small, tiny window of opportunity you have as an athlete, and she will

:58:27.:58:30.

utilise this opportunity to win. Thank you very much. We are back

:58:30.:58:35.

this afternoon, 3:30pm, that is on this afternoon, 3:30pm, that is on

:58:35.:58:39.
