well domination. Unbeatable. And passable! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

:01:06.:01:16.
:01:16.:01:17.

crosses the line. Esteem is coming. She has made it! It is all about

:01:17.:01:27.
:01:27.:01:30.

LaShawn Merritt. He is going to take evening's track programme, all eyes

:01:30.:01:38.

turned to one woman. When the athletics was last held in the

:01:38.:01:42.

Luzhniki Stadium pole vault was not even an event. Now it was the main

:01:42.:01:52.
:01:52.:01:52.

one. The magnificent Yelena Isinbayeva. When I won last time in

:01:52.:02:02.
:02:02.:02:15.

feeling inside me that yesterday I had a chance.

:02:15.:02:24.

Listen to the crowd as she goes clear. Oh yes! Wonderful staff.

:02:24.:02:30.

Isinbayeva really on top of her game now. But can the American respond?

:02:30.:02:36.

The Olympic champion Jennifer Suhr of the United States has got this

:02:36.:02:43.

vault to stay in this final. The American's last attempt now. Oh, no.

:02:43.:02:49.

That was her worst event of all. Yarisley Silva of Cuba has still got

:02:50.:02:56.

one final event but there is only one athlete clear so far.

:02:56.:03:05.

It is not to be. Isinbayeva is the champion! And the crowd have gone

:03:05.:03:08.

absolutely potty. She has won everything the sport has got to

:03:08.:03:17.

offer her at least once. Three world titles. Two Olympic titles. And

:03:18.:03:24.

numerous world records. She is back on top of the world. I think I won

:03:24.:03:28.

today because of my home crowd, because of my family and because of

:03:29.:03:33.

my genius coach. I have had many difficulties in the past but I am

:03:34.:03:37.

proud of myself because I have overcome this and now I am flying

:03:37.:03:47.
:03:47.:03:50.

organisers and four Yelena Isinbayeva. The perfect way to

:03:50.:03:55.

finish. And usually today, there is just a morning session. If you are

:03:55.:03:59.

looking for an athletics fix this Wednesday, the next 2.5 hours is it.

:03:59.:04:04.

It is the men's long jump this morning. We were not sure of Greg

:04:04.:04:13.

Rutherford would be here because of injury but he is. The star name the

:04:13.:04:21.

women's 5000m is Meseret Defar. Also in the field we have Sophie

:04:21.:04:26.

Hitchon, the British record-holder. She has been in outstanding form

:04:26.:04:32.

this year. Her focus will be to make the final, as it will be for Chris

:04:32.:04:42.
:04:42.:05:05.

O'Hare. This is the timetable for morning and good morning to Paula

:05:05.:05:10.

and Denise. The morning after the evening when the stadium came

:05:10.:05:16.

alive. Absolutely. We were just saying that here in Russia they do

:05:16.:05:21.

not care about Usain Bolt. It is Isinbayeva that they care about. She

:05:21.:05:24.

was performing to everyone last night. She was saying if the

:05:24.:05:27.

Olympics had been here she would have got it right because of the

:05:28.:05:32.

support. I think that lifted her over the bar because she was way

:05:32.:05:38.

over it. It was the perfect scenario for the organisers. This is what

:05:38.:05:43.

they wanted to happen. Yes, it they had a full stadium. It was like

:05:43.:05:49.

watching a film star last night. She was playing to the crowd and blowing

:05:49.:05:53.

kisses and getting them onside to do what she set out to do which is to

:05:53.:05:59.

win this competition. Her vault was incredible. You see how far she was

:05:59.:06:06.

over the bar. The place erupted. It was a joy to be here. This is what

:06:06.:06:11.

the worlds are about. It is about getting people involved. They are

:06:11.:06:16.

getting the athletes across the line first. We see the spoils there are

:06:16.:06:23.

she clears 4.89 the first time but that was a heck of a competition --

:06:23.:06:27.

we see the smiles there. We have Yarisley Silva who was the silver

:06:27.:06:31.

medallist and Jennifer Suhr who was probably the favourite coming into

:06:31.:06:36.

this competition. She has been in scintillating form and is a fierce

:06:36.:06:40.

competitor but this lady here, Isinbayeva, who has been the darling

:06:40.:06:44.

of world athletics for so many years, it was a nice return for her

:06:44.:06:51.

to be on home soil, to really lift the crowd. The cameramen were all

:06:51.:06:55.

over her. It was her night last night. It was a pleasure to watch

:06:55.:07:00.

her. Paula, we think back to the British crowds in London 2012 when

:07:00.:07:04.

we were very British and we cheered when people did well and we did not

:07:04.:07:11.

cheer when people did not do well. It was not the same last night.

:07:11.:07:16.

poor Jennifer Suhr. She failed and the crowd erupted as if Isinbayeva

:07:16.:07:19.

had gone clear. She was definitely competing against the partisan

:07:20.:07:29.
:07:30.:07:30.

crowd. That made her job harder. But Yelena lifted it when it really

:07:30.:07:34.

mattered. She has gone back to her old childhood coach. I think they

:07:34.:07:39.

got it right. We will see if she changes her mind about whether she

:07:39.:07:43.

retires. At the beginning of the year she said this is the end. And

:07:43.:07:47.

she said I will go and have a baby and come back again. What is your

:07:47.:07:54.

gut instinct? Had it been the Olympics and this was the final

:07:54.:07:57.

Olympics you could say, draw a line under it. But the way she was

:07:57.:08:03.

jumping. She did attempt a new world record of five metres and seven

:08:03.:08:08.

centimetres and she was not that far off it so she is clearly in great

:08:08.:08:12.

shape. She might feel that mentally it is difficult keep stimulating

:08:12.:08:16.

yourself after being so successful for so many years, but I think there

:08:16.:08:22.

is a lot more to give from her and she likes the stadium. I think the

:08:22.:08:29.

sport needs her. We have Usain Bolt on the men's side. It is the

:08:29.:08:36.

women's 5000m now. There is an interesting story about the American

:08:36.:08:46.
:08:46.:08:47.

athlete going in heat one. We could have had a step -- Sebastien Coe 's

:08:47.:08:52.

Steve Yvette type clash like we had in Moscow. But Shannon Rowbury

:08:52.:08:59.

messed up and then run a qualifying time but did not submit it to USA

:08:59.:09:04.

track and field. So because of that when the 1500m trial winner pulled

:09:04.:09:07.

out last Thursday, even though Shannon was already here and wanted

:09:07.:09:13.

to run the 1500 eaters, she could not do that. So she is here in the

:09:13.:09:21.

5000m. She has qualified but unfortunately for Shannon, her best

:09:21.:09:26.

event is the 3000m which does not exist any more. Hopefully she will

:09:26.:09:32.

go out and perform here. It is a shame that as a bronze medallist in

:09:32.:09:39.

2009, she is not here in the 1500m. And going back to Meseret Defar it

:09:39.:09:48.

is a shame that Tirunesh Dibaba is not here.

:09:48.:09:52.

I think the Ethiopians wanted to let the younger athletes have a go on

:09:52.:09:57.

the team. For Meseret Defar, it has not worked for her doubling up in

:09:57.:10:04.

the past. Maybe it is better for her that she has not doubled. Let's

:10:04.:10:14.
:10:14.:10:16.

handover to the commentators now. clean sweep with Tirunesh Dibaba and

:10:16.:10:23.

Meseret Defar. But Mercy Cherono has a chance here. She was fifth in the

:10:23.:10:28.

last World Championships. A quick look at the line-up for you. And a

:10:28.:10:33.

lookout for Almaz Ayana who has the second quickest time in the world

:10:33.:10:41.

for you. It is the first five to go through automatically. Just 11

:10:41.:10:51.
:10:51.:10:52.

running. It could be a straight final. 11 in each heat, the first

:10:52.:11:00.

five go through automatically and then the next five olive fires.

:11:00.:11:05.

are only eliminating six athletes in total. Sorry, seven athletes in

:11:06.:11:13.

total. That means there is a very easy qualification. There is no real

:11:13.:11:18.

incentive for anyone to run quickly. There is only an incentive to stay

:11:18.:11:22.

on your two feet and run in a reasonable time. The first five to

:11:22.:11:30.

go through in each heat and then the five fastest losers. This is the pay

:11:30.:11:34.

is that you or I could have been running at this morning, Andrew, if

:11:34.:11:42.

we had not been here! I would not be pleased with that pace. They are

:11:42.:11:51.

almost at a standstill now. They are just avoiding pitfalls. This is when

:11:51.:11:56.

things can happen when it is crowded. There are the Americans

:11:56.:11:59.

Shannon Rowbury and Molly Huddle. She is a good five thousand metre

:11:59.:12:09.
:12:09.:12:10.

runner. Shannon Rowbury gets a bit lost when it stretches out to 5000m.

:12:10.:12:13.

Huddle is someone to watch. But you are watching out for the East

:12:14.:12:21.

Africans, the Ethiopians and Kenyans. There are three Ethiopians

:12:21.:12:26.

now running for other countries like Belgium, the United Arab Emirates

:12:26.:12:34.

and Bahrain. Paula is watching. This is a six minute mile pace. I know

:12:34.:12:40.

you have a bad foot at the moment, you could have stayed with this.

:12:40.:12:45.

could have stayed with it. Whether I could have had spikes and stayed on

:12:45.:12:48.

the track is a different matter. They look like they are almost

:12:48.:12:55.

walking. Somebody surely is going to snap in a minute, otherwise they are

:12:55.:12:58.

making it very easy for the second heat because otherwise all thy have

:12:59.:13:07.

to do is run a half decent pace and ten will go through from that heat.

:13:07.:13:12.

They are going through to the second lap. I do not think I have ever seen

:13:12.:13:17.

three minutes for two laps of the track in a championship. They are

:13:17.:13:22.

picking up a little. Can they go through the three minute barrier for

:13:22.:13:28.

two laps? There are a few of them who would not have been disqualified

:13:28.:13:33.

for lifting in the 50 K walk. Here we are, the pace is picking up a

:13:33.:13:40.

little bit which is good to see. Molly Huddle decides to stretch it a

:13:40.:13:45.

little bit alongside the Frenchwoman, Sophie Duarte. Three

:13:45.:13:50.

minutes, three seconds for two laps, I think it is a world record

:13:50.:13:56.

slowed time indeed championships. Welcome to Moscow and welcome to the

:13:56.:14:01.

heats of the 5000m. They will of course begin to pick up the pace and

:14:01.:14:07.

things will become respectable but we are not heading for a quick time.

:14:07.:14:15.

It is the next five fastest who make it through. I think those who are

:14:15.:14:19.

running in the second semifinal, which includes Meseret Defar, they

:14:19.:14:27.

will be aware that they do not have to go too quickly to beat this. You

:14:27.:14:35.

find there are a smattering of spectators early. The contrast

:14:35.:14:39.

between this morning and last night when Isinbayeva was doing magical

:14:39.:14:44.

things in the pole vault, the atmosphere was wonderful. It will be

:14:44.:14:49.

again in the evening sessions. This morning, it is a gentle easing into

:14:49.:14:54.

the day and certainly a gentle easing into this race for these

:14:54.:14:58.

athletes. Looking around the crowds this morning, we were really pleased

:14:58.:15:05.

there was a big crowd last night. The IAAF are discussing in detail

:15:05.:15:10.

what to do with these championships. Is it too long a period? Is it too

:15:10.:15:16.

thinly spaced? Do they need fewer days? Last year in London, in the

:15:16.:15:19.

Olympic Games, crowds in the morning and the crowds in the evening were

:15:19.:15:24.

such that we came to have high expectations. But track and field

:15:24.:15:29.

athletics is not a major sport in this country. They have had great

:15:29.:15:32.

athlete in history and great performers. We saw one of the best

:15:32.:15:36.

reformers last night, but it is not a sport which has a huge following

:15:36.:15:43.

in this country. When we looked at the Olympics last year, for 2012, I

:15:43.:15:46.

know the UK athletics Federation are out here talking about 27 team and

:15:46.:15:52.

one would imagine that the 2017 World Championships, back in the

:15:52.:15:55.

Olympic Stadium in London, I would sense there might be a few more

:15:55.:16:05.
:16:05.:16:22.

struggling Perhaps to get the attention, the promotion. People

:16:22.:16:27.

automatically criticise crowds like this. You have seen what is

:16:27.:16:33.

possible at the Olympics when the morning session sold out. The pace

:16:33.:16:43.
:16:43.:16:46.

it is picking up. The Ethiopian now running for Bahrain is running at

:16:46.:16:56.
:16:56.:17:12.

the brunt. -- the front. We have lost one out the back. Has Muriuki

:17:12.:17:22.
:17:22.:17:25.

been spiked questor much she is not able to run properly. -- spiked?

:17:25.:17:31.

Unfortunately, one of the fastest athletes in the world this year.

:17:31.:17:39.

That is a bit of a disappointment for her. She would have been among

:17:39.:17:44.

the favourites. Sadly, she is sitting out and watching the race

:17:44.:17:54.
:17:54.:17:54.

and her team-mate, who is still out there. Mercy Cherono is still out

:17:54.:18:01.

there. They are running at the reasonable lap pace. They look more

:18:01.:18:11.
:18:11.:18:12.

comfortable. When you are jogging, a nurse comes into play. -- nerves

:18:12.:18:16.

come into play. I do not think more than five will be able to make it

:18:16.:18:26.
:18:26.:18:27.

from this round. Muriuki his feeling her calf. She is struggling

:18:27.:18:35.

with it. She could have challenged for a medal. It is now five from 10.

:18:35.:18:45.
:18:45.:18:48.

One Kenyan remains. Mercy Cherono pulls them away. Almaz Ayana is the

:18:48.:18:58.

quickest in the world. Along with the Bahraini an athlete, they at

:18:58.:19:04.

easing their way clear. You want to see what is in your legs. You want

:19:04.:19:09.

to give yourself a decent run out. They have not really done that

:19:09.:19:14.

today put up the first part was so slow. They are operating at a

:19:14.:19:22.

reasonable pace. At least the race is getting going. Both you and I

:19:22.:19:28.

will be disappointed not seeing a British athlete in this race.

:19:28.:19:36.

really feel that Stet 12 missing out on the qualifying time by --

:19:36.:19:43.

Stephanie Twell missing out on the qualifying time by 0.6 of a second.

:19:43.:19:48.

What she actually did in Paris in the Diamond League was to get a

:19:48.:19:55.

number of athletes together, including Sophie Duarte, and she

:19:55.:19:59.

said, let's work together to get the time. She did the bulk of the

:19:59.:20:04.

work that did not have the finishing kick for the A standard.

:20:04.:20:08.

Had she been here, I do not think the pace would have been so slow. I

:20:09.:20:13.

think she would have got out that and given themselves a working

:20:13.:20:23.
:20:23.:20:23.

chance of some bustard users coming from this heat. -- the fastest

:20:23.:20:31.

losers. There is no big advantage in not selecting someone. Alison

:20:31.:20:37.

why it is in the stands. She is an official with British athletics.

:20:37.:20:42.

She will be feeling like you and I, wishing we were watching a British

:20:42.:20:47.

athlete. She was that British athlete. She was someone who really

:20:47.:20:54.

helped me when I came into the team as a gangster. She is one of the

:20:54.:20:58.

people who really taught me if I was running in the second heat, you

:20:58.:21:04.

get out into the tunnel and you get as much information as possible

:21:04.:21:14.
:21:14.:21:14.

from the first heat so you know what you are aiming for. Alison is

:21:14.:21:19.

looking interestingly at this event. She was an athlete who had

:21:19.:21:28.

accomplished and awful lot in her career. With Stephanie Twell just

:21:28.:21:35.

being outside the a standard. She won the British championships. If

:21:35.:21:39.

you have not been an you miss out on the standard, you have a better

:21:39.:21:44.

chance of being selected. You cannot go because you have had your

:21:44.:21:49.

shot. That seems contrary to the way it should be able stuck I think

:21:49.:21:56.

beach start building a campaign. it should be. I think we should

:21:56.:22:03.

start building a campaign. You need to give more incentive for athletes.

:22:03.:22:08.

There is nothing wrong with being the best in Britain. Sometimes, we

:22:08.:22:13.

should make efforts to try to bring them to the championships. You

:22:13.:22:19.

cannot win anything if you are at home and watching the television.

:22:19.:22:29.

Almaz Ayana it is one of the favourites to get to the final. It

:22:29.:22:38.

is the first five to go through. Then the pocket of three. That

:22:38.:22:46.

includes the two Americans. Three laps to go in the first heat of the

:22:46.:22:51.

women's 5000 metres. We have talked about qualification been

:22:51.:22:55.

particularly comfortable with the first five going through pull stub

:22:55.:23:02.

we are looking at the five. They are clear. -- are going through.

:23:02.:23:11.

There are two groups of two. The 5th athlete is pulling clear.

:23:11.:23:21.
:23:21.:23:24.

Messager Renault is leading. Molly Huddle and Shannon Rowbury are also

:23:24.:23:31.

there. -- Mercy Cherono. They have learned the ropes. They have been

:23:31.:23:37.

here. They know what they need to do in the final on Saturday. The

:23:37.:23:47.
:23:47.:23:56.

good news for America is the two We have talked about Shannon

:23:56.:24:01.

Rowbury and Molly Huddle. Shannon Rowbury would have loved to have

:24:01.:24:11.
:24:11.:24:13.

been in the 1500 but she ran a poor race in the European Championships.

:24:13.:24:19.

Instead, Sarah Brown came over. She came across with a day's

:24:19.:24:23.

preparation and ran well in the heats. She went out in the semi-

:24:23.:24:28.

final. Shannon Rowbury would have had a very good chance to have gone

:24:29.:24:38.
:24:39.:24:44.

into the final. We have Mercy Cherono and the two Americans. And

:24:44.:24:49.

Sophie Duarte, the French athlete, is trying to close her down. The

:24:49.:24:56.

French record holder in the steeplechase. Only five go through

:24:56.:25:01.

automatically. If the gap is not closed, I think she will be out.

:25:01.:25:06.

The five fastest may well not come from this race due to the very

:25:06.:25:13.

lethargic start. We thought Sophie Duarte would have run better than

:25:13.:25:18.

that. The second half has been quicker. Mercy Cherono in second

:25:18.:25:22.

place is running comfortably. Ben Molly Huddle of the United States,

:25:22.:25:29.

having a bit of a workout. Shannon Rowbury just jogging in 4th place.

:25:29.:25:37.

They are well on their way through. The format Ethiopian athlete is now

:25:37.:25:46.

comfortably in 5th place. Almaz Ayana looks like she is ready to

:25:46.:25:54.

compete, even today. These athletes are getting an easy day out - an

:25:54.:25:59.

easy qualification. Sophie Duarte will be the 6th athlete. I would be

:25:59.:26:04.

very surprised if that is fast enough to go through. The final is

:26:05.:26:14.

taking place on Saturday. Mercy Cherono will take it. A few days'

:26:14.:26:17.

rest and they will probably go again this afternoon with the pace

:26:17.:26:27.
:26:27.:26:34.

they have ran. Molly Huddle in third place and Shannon Rowbury in

:26:34.:26:44.
:26:44.:26:51.

force. The Bahraini in athlete comfortably qualified. She is now

:26:51.:26:59.

thinking about coming here on Saturday into the finishing

:26:59.:27:09.
:27:09.:27:10.

straight. The natural rivalry between Almaz Ayana and Mercy

:27:10.:27:20.
:27:20.:27:20.

Cherono - they can choose in this race. -- their countries in this

:27:20.:27:30.
:27:30.:27:40.

race. You can see Shannon Rowbury hammer throw qualifying competition

:27:40.:27:46.

is on. Sophie Hitchon the British record holder goes in the second

:27:46.:27:52.

pull in about an hour's time. Betty Heidler, the world record holder,

:27:53.:27:58.

is in that group. The defending world champion is also in this

:27:58.:28:02.

group. The Asian record holder and bronze medallist at the 2008

:28:02.:28:07.

Olympics. They are the longer throwers in the group. Betty

:28:08.:28:14.

Heidler has not got a great record in qualifying competitions. She

totally blew out in last year's European Championships in the

:28:19.:28:24.

build-up to the Olympics. She did come back with an Olympic bronze

:28:24.:28:29.

medal. She is the world record holder. That is not good - a bit of

:28:29.:28:39.
:28:39.:28:40.

balance towards the end. Just over the 65 metre line. There is the

:28:40.:28:47.

good work. Four turns on the heel and the toe. You can tell from the

:28:47.:28:51.

expression on her face she did not really like pitbull but she could

:28:51.:29:01.
:29:01.:29:06.

not get any real strength behind the delivery. -- like it. Anna

:29:06.:29:16.
:29:16.:29:16.

Bulgakova, the lesser known of the two Russians in this group. Tatyana

:29:16.:29:26.
:29:26.:29:35.

Lysenko is the defending record the end. That is the first

:29:35.:29:40.

automatic qualifier. That is the longest throw we have seen by far

:29:40.:29:50.
:29:50.:29:54.

in this group. Wenxiu Zhang it is in second place at the moment but

:29:54.:30:03.

Anna Bulgakova really got behind that. She is through. First place.

:30:03.:30:08.

The Olympic champion is in the stadium. Greg Rutherford attempts

:30:08.:30:12.

to qualify for the final of the long jump. So much doubt about

:30:12.:30:18.

whether he would be hit or not. The qualifying distance is certainly

:30:18.:30:25.

within his scope. He has three attempts to clear a height will be

:30:25.:30:34.

one of the top 12 performers. -- the height all be one of the top 12

side of the arena, just getting his last-minute preparations done

:30:48.:30:53.

before the qualifying competition starts. Almost directly opposite

:30:53.:31:03.
:31:03.:31:06.

the commentary box. Just a little way to the left-hand side - the

:31:16.:31:35.

go through so why not ten from this final. Easy, right? I am sure Steph

:31:35.:31:40.

is sitting there thinking why am I not hear? The others have two run

:31:40.:31:49.

under 16 minute pace. It is, ten will go through from here. A bit of

:31:49.:31:56.

work together. A fairly straightforward Wednesday morning.

:31:56.:32:01.

Ten o'clock. If somebody said to you just need to run 16 minutes to

:32:01.:32:05.

qualify for the world championship final, I am sure any of these women

:32:05.:32:10.

would be delighted with that opportunity. The name to pick out,

:32:10.:32:20.
:32:20.:32:55.

Meseret Defar. Her team-mate oozed to the 5000m final, that is why the

:32:55.:33:01.

likes of Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar have won so many titles.

:33:01.:33:05.

Forget the Olympic Games, she is the Olympic champion of course. Let's

:33:05.:33:09.

talk about the world championship 5000m. Meseret Defar has never been

:33:09.:33:19.
:33:19.:33:20.

out of the top three on four occasions. She is getting a nice

:33:20.:33:30.

cheer from the rather sparse crowd in this morning. I will pick up

:33:30.:33:36.

Brendan's point, you can see a sparse crowd but if there are

:33:36.:33:41.

tickets available, Wednesday morning, heats in the 5000, Heaton

:33:41.:33:45.

1500, qualification going on, it is not a great incentive, is it? It

:33:45.:33:51.

should be one of those three for two offers you are so keen on in the

:33:51.:33:54.

supermarkets! There were more people going the other way when we were on

:33:54.:34:04.
:34:04.:34:11.

the tube this morning than coming the blue and yellow contingent. They

:34:11.:34:18.

have not all turned up. The second heat of the women's 5000m. After

:34:18.:34:26.

that dawdle through the first two War three laps. That meant that all

:34:26.:34:32.

of these women, with the exception of the athlete from Georgia, have a

:34:32.:34:38.

brilliant opportunity of getting through to the final. The top five

:34:38.:34:48.
:34:48.:34:58.

other than help each other out a little bit. It is nice to see the

:34:58.:35:08.
:35:08.:35:13.

USA and Russia, friends that the the first lap of this one faster

:35:13.:35:23.
:35:23.:35:27.

than the last one? It is going to be faster! Dolores Checa of Spain just

:35:27.:35:34.

gliding to the front there. They just need to keep moaning like this,

:35:34.:35:41.

nice and comfortable. Everybody should be OK. There is the Ukrainian

:35:41.:35:51.
:35:51.:36:23.

crowd. There is a whole bunch of this morning, one of our great 5000m

:36:23.:36:28.

exponents. We were chatting about this qualification for the 5000. I

:36:28.:36:38.

will maybe bring Paula in on this as well, we had a shot of Alison Wyeth,

:36:38.:36:42.

and she is the seventh best ever British athlete but she did not

:36:42.:36:48.

break 15 minutes, a very good athlete, she came to major

:36:48.:36:53.

championships, 15 minutes, just outside, is her best. If you take

:36:53.:36:56.

out all of the African runners, there are not many women in the

:36:57.:37:02.

world running under that. A lot of the European athletes. That is quite

:37:02.:37:07.

a tough qualification. I think the a standard was a bit tough. We could

:37:07.:37:12.

certainly have taken someone here. It is a very tough nullification.

:37:12.:37:15.

Alison Wyeth will be very embarrassed this morning that we

:37:15.:37:19.

have been concentrating on her. She did not come here to be

:37:19.:37:23.

photographed, she came to watch the event she so much loved and was part

:37:23.:37:33.
:37:33.:38:01.

One of the best throwers in the world consistently. The Asian

:38:02.:38:11.
:38:12.:38:21.

only a qualifying mark but over 75 metres. Totally impassive. No

:38:21.:38:31.
:38:31.:38:37.

reaction at all but it was a good is well in excess of the qualifying

:38:37.:38:42.

line. That is the best she has thrown this year and she is through

:38:43.:38:48.

to the final. Tatiana is then co-on her first

:38:48.:38:55.

throw, the defending champion, crashed the hammer into the cage. --

:38:55.:39:05.
:39:05.:39:36.

She has proved that time and time qualifying for Sophie in the

:39:36.:39:42.

hammer, the women's second heat of the 5000m, these ten athletes are

:39:42.:39:47.

well on their way to qualifying. Paula, I know you are listening to

:39:47.:39:51.

qualification, where you telling me that in your day the qualifying time

:39:51.:39:58.

or something like 15.40. Yes, the qualifying time was 15.45 and then

:39:58.:40:06.

came down to 15.35 and has recently come down to 15.20 and 15.18. That

:40:06.:40:12.

is tough. It is reflected by the fact that we have only have 11 in

:40:12.:40:19.

each heat today. Also in the men's 1500 we have seen the standard come

:40:19.:40:24.

down in the same way. There are a decent number of guys qualifying but

:40:24.:40:34.
:40:34.:40:43.

it is to my mind a tough standard There is a good standard there.

:40:43.:40:49.

There are a few people missing here. The overall depth is not as good as

:40:49.:40:52.

it can be. Even from Great Britain there is no Julia Bleasdale who is

:40:52.:41:02.
:41:02.:41:03.

injured. And Jo Pavey. Brendan is our maternity experts sometimes. As

:41:03.:41:09.

we have watched events develop, and the women's 5000 has developed,

:41:09.:41:15.

Paula making the observation about altercation times coming down, I

:41:15.:41:19.

think you have to leave the door open for another nations to be

:41:19.:41:24.

sending an athlete if they want to. There are plenty of 5000m runners in

:41:24.:41:28.

the world. And there are plenty running within 15 and a half

:41:28.:41:32.

minutes. The opportunities are few and far between and this is an

:41:32.:41:35.

opportunity missing for a few athletes. We are disappointed that

:41:35.:41:40.

it is missing for British athletes. We are looking in the middle of the

:41:40.:41:50.
:41:50.:41:50.

group at the former junior champion, Viola Kibiwot from Kenya. And behind

:41:50.:41:58.

that, the double Olympic champion and world champion, Meseret Defar.

:41:58.:42:05.

When you talk about the other athletes like Haile Gebrselassie,

:42:05.:42:10.

they are critical of the Ethiopian athletics Federation. She will want

:42:10.:42:15.

to run the five and ten but when she has run the five and the ten she has

:42:15.:42:19.

not done well. When she has tried to double up she has not had good

:42:19.:42:27.

results. So maybe the selectors in Ethiopian are doing her a favour.

:42:27.:42:30.

They are protecting her from herself. She is the outstanding

:42:30.:42:36.

favourite for this event. Tirunesh Dibaba, the Empress, the greatest

:42:36.:42:41.

female athlete in the history of track and field athletics, five

:42:41.:42:44.

World Championships, gold medals, three Olympic Games titles, no woman

:42:44.:42:49.

has ever won more gold medals at these championships than Tirunesh

:42:49.:42:52.

Dibaba and she has probably not even turned up to watch this this

:42:52.:42:57.

morning. She and her sister are two of the fastest 5000m runners in the

:42:57.:43:01.

world but they were not allowed to run in this event. I think the

:43:01.:43:08.

Ethiopian selectors have for once done a good job. , her sister, was

:43:08.:43:18.
:43:18.:43:21.

that an estate? She out kicked Meseret Defar in Shanghai. That

:43:21.:43:28.

could have gone horribly wrong. I do not think she will contender in the

:43:28.:43:33.

1500. They may have been able to get a one, two, three. But you will not

:43:34.:43:39.

get a one, two, three without the great Tirunesh Dibaba. And her

:43:39.:43:44.

sister moved down from distance races, she won the world junior

:43:44.:43:49.

cross country. The reason she did that was she was training in Haile

:43:49.:43:51.

Gebrselassie's gym regularly in Ethiopian and he would be training

:43:51.:43:56.

with her. He started to notice her style, particularly her body shape,

:43:57.:44:03.

her legs. He went to the sisters and said she would be a better runner

:44:03.:44:07.

over the shorter distance than over the longer distance. So she stepped

:44:07.:44:17.
:44:17.:44:27.

down from the 1500m dash back to the this. Maybe not. The women's 1500m

:44:27.:44:31.

final tomorrow night. Hannah England made it through which was great. She

:44:31.:44:38.

will be in that final. The women's 800 rounds will be starting as

:44:39.:44:43.

well. We have just jarred and Marilyn Okoro going in the 800. The

:44:43.:44:53.
:44:53.:44:53.

:45:46.:45:56.
:45:56.:46:04.

the Dutch athlete. -- the 1500. The pace has picked up a bit. Maybe Kim

:46:04.:46:10.

Conley wants to stretch out a little bit. Three laps to go.

:46:10.:46:16.

minutes and three laps to go. They need to go steadily. Five athletes

:46:16.:46:21.

will be qualifiers of right and the five fastest losers. They only need

:46:21.:46:29.

to run at this kind of pace and all 10 will go through. When you come

:46:29.:46:36.

here and know what you have to do, at the end of the day, there is one

:46:36.:46:44.

athlete behind them all. The Georgian is being lapped up already.

:46:44.:46:51.

The 10 of them are easily through. Fellow competitors with 1000 metres

:46:51.:46:56.

to go. Try and impress them that you are running well and feeling

:46:56.:47:04.

good. Do not do anything and necessary. I am looking at Meseret

:47:04.:47:14.
:47:14.:47:14.

Defar in 4th place. Dolores Checa has done enough and is off the back

:47:14.:47:22.

of the group. Here they are. The 10 have the chance of running through.

:47:22.:47:28.

Just over 13 minutes. Easy running. A wonder if each of them knows what

:47:28.:47:38.
:47:38.:47:48.

to do. They were out on the back the Australian art the drift of the

:47:48.:47:58.

group, absolutely no problem. -- are adrift. That is a 71. Kim

:48:01.:48:08.

Conley continues to wind it up. I do not know. Maybe they did not

:48:08.:48:14.

look. They set out with that intent. They must have known. They went

:48:14.:48:21.

through the first km a bit quicker but this is unnecessary. They went

:48:21.:48:27.

with the pace and that is fine. There are six of them in the group

:48:27.:48:34.

and they are working hard for it. It is easy qualification. Ms Tripp

:48:34.:48:42.

Dave Barr has seen -- Meseret Defar has seen the athletes in the group.

:48:42.:48:48.

It is Wednesday morning and they are running up by 0 on Saturday.

:49:24.:49:31.

USA/Russia behind. Those are the top five by rights. Everyone else

athletes - all well qualified. A little bit of a stretch out for

:50:02.:50:12.
:50:12.:50:15.

Meseret Defar. She has pace to burn. No surprises in the women's 5000.

:50:15.:50:21.

You cannot look beyond her. will want to assert her point. The

:50:21.:50:27.

Olympic champion last year. Favourite for the event. It never

:50:27.:50:33.

does you any harm. Let them know you are the boss. She may have a

:50:33.:50:41.

good future ahead of her. Meseret Defar, a fantastic athlete. By far

:50:41.:50:46.

the favourite for this event. We will look forward to the final on

:50:46.:50:50.

Saturday. The top five go through. Everyone else behind them will join

:50:50.:50:58.

them as fast as losers in the final on Friday. -- fastest losers. The

:50:58.:51:03.

long jump competition will start in five minutes' time. Greg Rutherford

:51:04.:51:09.

is safely through his warm up. He seems to be running well. He has

:51:09.:51:17.

not taken off at 100%. He goes in about 10 minutes. The qualifying

:51:17.:51:25.

distance, at 8.10 metres. Back at the hummer... Betty Heidler, the

:51:25.:51:30.

world record holder, is beginning to gain a reputation as being a

:51:30.:51:35.

little bit flaky in hammer qualifying competitions. She has

:51:35.:51:41.

done it before. She needs something exceptionally good and she has not

:51:41.:51:48.

got it. Betty Heidler could be on her way out of the competition. Her

:51:48.:51:56.

best throw so far 68 point 83 metres. She is only in 9th place in

:51:56.:52:04.

the qualifying pool. Real problems for the world record holder. She

:52:04.:52:11.

will need to sit it out and wait and see. Here is the result of what

:52:11.:52:21.
:52:21.:52:28.

happened during the first throws officio and Tatyana Lysenko,

:52:28.:52:33.

the defending world champion, she goes through comfortably on her

:52:33.:52:39.

second throw. Everybody else, including the very talented Jeneva

:52:39.:52:43.

McCall of the United States we need to see whether their distances are

:52:43.:52:53.
:52:53.:53:03.

We are going to chat a bit about selection. congratulations on

:53:03.:53:10.

making the 5000 metre heats where good when they were not. They were

:53:10.:53:16.

an illustration of the fact team management now is not what it used

:53:16.:53:22.

to be. It goes back to my point about Eilish McColgan not knowing

:53:22.:53:31.

what times she was running. She did not believe us when Steve told her

:53:31.:53:37.

she had qualified. Essentially it was a warm up. I will let you off

:53:37.:53:43.

but you did not answer the question. Because the focus on people making

:53:43.:53:47.

finals - perhaps a lack of development opportunities for

:53:47.:53:52.

athletes. We were talking about Stephanie Twell. This comes from

:53:52.:53:58.

your former coach and the regime he created. I think it goes one step

:53:58.:54:02.

before that. We had a team of people that were just getting on to

:54:02.:54:07.

the team and not performing when we got here. We had this attitude

:54:07.:54:12.

where people were getting the British vest, turning up, going out

:54:12.:54:17.

in the first round and we thought that was acceptable. We had to be

:54:17.:54:23.

tougher. We got the system way you need to be accountable, you need to

:54:23.:54:26.

perform, look at training programmes to get to the

:54:27.:54:30.

championships. Charles has gone and everyone is breathing a sigh of

:54:30.:54:35.

relief. We are caught between, should we be tough or should be

:54:35.:54:41.

slack off a bit? I believe that athletes and young athletes need

:54:41.:54:45.

the chance to come to championships like this. It takes time to perform

:54:45.:54:51.

and behave in this pressure-cooker situation which is the World

:54:51.:54:56.

Championships. Do you get a better athlete? Do you become a better

:54:56.:55:01.

athlete by being thrown in the deep end and performing terribly? How

:55:01.:55:07.

does that help you later on in your career? I am not sure. Respected

:55:07.:55:13.

Charles when he was head coach. He said it did not make a huge amount

:55:13.:55:18.

of difference. It did not make a huge amount of difference coming to

:55:18.:55:23.

the championships. How do you know unless you come and you get the

:55:23.:55:27.

chance to try to perform? Nobody comes with the intention of

:55:27.:55:34.

performing badly. Every mum wants to run well. -- everyone wants to

:55:34.:55:42.

run well. Saviour to Rutty is gutted and she has learnt a

:55:42.:55:49.

valuable lesson. -- Sophie Duarte. Neil Black, in the centre, he is

:55:49.:55:54.

the performance director. He did have the flexibility to change that

:55:54.:56:00.

policy and be able to select those people who were so close to the

:56:00.:56:04.

standard. Are they going to make the top eight? Unless they have the

:56:04.:56:10.

chance, you do not know. UK Sports Fund UK Athletics on the basis of

:56:10.:56:14.

medals. They have a limited pot of money and they said they will throw

:56:14.:56:20.

it into a team of 30, 40 or 50 rather than 70 or 80, to make sure

:56:20.:56:25.

athletes who will win medals have what they need. That is the

:56:25.:56:31.

difficulty. It is all based on finance. Each year, you have to

:56:31.:56:36.

look at the goals collectively from a sport. We have had a very

:56:36.:56:40.

successful Olympics and we need to look ahead to Rio and building

:56:40.:56:47.

depth in our team. In some events, we have no athletes. They need to

:56:47.:56:52.

encourage athletes to think bigger and perform better. They need to be

:56:52.:56:57.

here in some about events. We are in Moscow and not Brisbane a way of

:56:57.:57:01.

talking about five or six athletes who could have come and it would

:57:01.:57:07.

have made a difference to their development, the strength of the

:57:07.:57:13.

team and they could build on that for Rio. Here is what is still to

:57:13.:57:23.
:57:23.:57:27.

qualification of the men's long jump. Fingers crossed for his

:57:27.:57:31.

hamstrings. Sophie Hitchon, a British record holder, has been in

:57:31.:57:37.

fine form this season. It will be tough qualification in the hammer.

:57:37.:57:44.

Chris O'Hare goes in the heats of the men's 1500m. He won the

:57:44.:57:49.

European Championships earlier this year. There is the Olympic champion

:57:49.:57:57.

rubbing his hamstring a little bit. He is here. You have to reassess

:57:57.:58:02.

and go for it. He has made the decision to come. He had every

:58:02.:58:07.

reason not to be here. It is important for him to try to back up

:58:07.:58:13.

his Olympic gold with another medal. Is it realistic? We do not know the

:58:13.:58:19.

state of his body right now that he is hopeful, I am sure. Another

:58:19.:58:26.

selection type., the a standard for the men's long jump was 8.25 metres.

:58:26.:58:34.

It would have won a silver medal in London. Absolutely. Is it really

:58:34.:58:39.

realistic? Have they looked at the depth and standard of events

:58:39.:58:43.

worldwide and set the standard accordingly. For the long jump, I

:58:43.:58:51.

do not think they have. Steve Cram will be commentating on the 1500m

:59:01.:59:13.

in a moment. First, best. Steve all the time. The Moroccan and

:59:21.:59:27.

Steve Ovett trying to get through on the inside. He has got through.

:59:27.:59:33.

He was knocked off the track slightly. Has he gone too soon?

:59:33.:59:43.
:59:43.:59:45.

Steve Cram leading. Steve Ovett in 5th. Steve Cram is leading. He has

:59:45.:59:52.

done it! He is three yards clear. Steve Cram wins the World

:59:52.:00:01.

Championship will stop -- the World Championship. What a marvellous win

:00:02.:00:11.
:00:12.:00:18.

little flag. She did not think it looked very match oh. Could you not

:00:18.:00:24.

find a better one? ? In those days it was not showbiz. That was the

:00:24.:00:29.

best I could come up with that the time. I was not happy with the music

:00:29.:00:35.

on that clip either. Give it up? Happy memories. There is my flag. A

:00:35.:00:41.

little bit pathetic, wasn't it? It was a great championships, Helsinki.

:00:41.:00:48.

We have talked about this before. The boycott we have had in Moscow

:00:48.:00:51.

before. Talking about altercation standards, I remember that initially

:00:51.:01:01.

they said it would be the top 14 or 15 per event, it ended up the top

:01:01.:01:07.

three per country. It seems like ancient history now, unfortunately.

:01:07.:01:13.

Talk us through the race. How did it go? The bloke who is next to me,

:01:13.:01:18.

Brendan was a key figure in that. I knew all about Steve Ovett and Steve

:01:18.:01:27.

Scott. He was the world number one. But there was an athlete from

:01:27.:01:33.

Morocco. I did not know too much about him. I had never raced him.

:01:33.:01:38.

Brendan had heard a rumour that he might push on from 600 or 700m out.

:01:38.:01:44.

That is what I might have done. When I heard that he might do that, it

:01:44.:01:49.

was great practical. The third lap was a slow. I was watching him. He

:01:49.:01:54.

went first, I was able to follow him, let us all out and 200 to go, I

:01:54.:01:59.

went past him. The 1500m finals in any championships are often

:01:59.:02:03.

tactical. In those days they were often more tactical than quick. I

:02:03.:02:08.

have always held that up as one of my better cat graces. If you get

:02:08.:02:11.

everything right on the day and you end up winning the gold medal then

:02:11.:02:16.

brilliant. Prerace intelligence helps as well and I had a good

:02:16.:02:21.

little spy. Indeed. And in terms of all your achievements in your

:02:21.:02:29.

career, where would that rank? think it is right up there. To go to

:02:29.:02:33.

a major championships and run, I would probably have to give myself

:02:33.:02:40.

ten out of ten. You go, you make plans and you think, if he does that

:02:40.:02:43.

then I will do this. It was one of those occasions when it all played

:02:43.:02:50.

out that way. For many years after that, I used to think about world

:02:50.:02:55.

records and thankfully I was able to do that as well. But the essence of

:02:55.:02:59.

1500 metre running is pitting yourself mentally, not just

:02:59.:03:04.

physically, the other guys are the best in the world, their tactics and

:03:04.:03:10.

your tactics. That race was a great example of that. Side is still a

:03:10.:03:14.

great friend of mine. He is working at these championships. I met up

:03:14.:03:18.

with Steve Scott for lunch in the states. And Steve Ovett is here as

:03:18.:03:24.

well. I still have great friends from them. And how important was

:03:24.:03:28.

Moscow in 1980. We have been talking about selection and experience. Did

:03:28.:03:35.

that have a big impact on how you ran in your career? We played a film

:03:35.:03:40.

last night when I said that. Moscow was a pivotal point in my career,

:03:40.:03:44.

coming there is a 19-year-old. I scraped into the final by two

:03:45.:03:48.

hundredths of a second. But the experience I got, even if I had not

:03:48.:03:57.

got to the final was incredible. It was not just my experience, it was

:03:57.:03:59.

watching Sebastien Coe and Steve Ovett, learning from the two masters

:03:59.:04:04.

at the time, watching how they conducted themselves. It is not only

:04:04.:04:07.

your personal experience, it is watching the good guys. What does Mo

:04:07.:04:14.

Farah do? Brendan, it was watching what he did, Moorcroft, and Daley

:04:14.:04:19.

Thompson. You watch the top hole in your team and you learn from them. I

:04:19.:04:26.

think that is why coming to major championships is important. OK. The

:04:26.:04:31.

1500m heats are coming up in a moment with Asbel Kiprop. But now to

:04:31.:04:41.
:04:41.:05:00.

can see there. There has hardly been any wind in this stadium during

:05:00.:05:08.

these championships. It is Sebastien Beyer of Germany who leads at the

:05:08.:05:15.

moment from both qualifying pools. And Dwight Phillips, the great

:05:15.:05:22.

champion from the United States has jumped 7.95, a season's best. 7.814

:05:22.:05:32.
:05:32.:05:40.

Greg. An easy entry into this to his coach and the coach will tell

:05:40.:05:47.

him what was good, what was bad and what he needs to change. Not too

:05:47.:05:57.
:05:57.:06:09.

that that that race in Helsinki was 30 years ago today. Happy birthday

:06:09.:06:19.
:06:19.:06:19.

to me! 30 years ago. You have not changed. You have not aged.Thank

:06:19.:06:29.
:06:29.:06:36.

you. Chris O'Hare goes in the third field. Here's the defending

:06:37.:06:45.

champion. I think he is the best 1500m talent we have had for a

:06:45.:06:53.

while. We saw great evidence of that in the race in Monaco where Mo Farah

:06:53.:07:03.
:07:03.:07:03.

broke the record. There are some good athletes in this field. Kiprop

:07:04.:07:13.
:07:14.:07:36.

moves to the front. The likes of at the front. Positioning himself.

:07:36.:07:41.

The only thing he will be thinking about is, don't make any mistakes. I

:07:41.:07:47.

will be interested in watching Souleiman. He finished third in the

:07:47.:07:53.

800m last night. He only chose the 800m because he saw David Rhodesia

:07:53.:08:03.
:08:03.:08:05.

was not running. -- David Rudisha. To get a medal in the 1500m will be

:08:05.:08:10.

a very tall order. That is one athlete that Asbel Kiprop would be

:08:10.:08:19.

nervous. He has had sometimes in the past when his mental ability and his

:08:19.:08:24.

performance has not been equal to his physical ability, Kiprop, but I

:08:24.:08:34.
:08:34.:08:41.

wonder if it is time for revision. If it is time for revision, that is

:08:41.:08:51.
:08:51.:08:51.

the man you would look at to do it. This is the part where he can go to

:08:52.:09:01.
:09:02.:09:27.

sleep, the third lap. But he is the back of the field. Asbel Kiprop

:09:27.:09:32.

had a slight stumble but he is all right. Now there is a race in the

:09:32.:09:42.
:09:42.:09:44.

back straight. Kip Raab is looking good there. -- Kiprop. Nick Willis

:09:44.:09:53.

has got a lot of work to do. Florian Carvalho is trying to get into the

:09:53.:10:03.

top six. Florian Carvalho of France is trying to make it. It is the

:10:03.:10:09.

Ethiopian who misses out. No problems at the front for temp two

:10:09.:10:13.

and it is that qualification spot we are concentrating on. Florian

:10:13.:10:18.

Carvalho finished in the dark blue for France. This man for Ethiopian

:10:18.:10:23.

has been running very well this year and he was out kicked there. The

:10:23.:10:29.

winning time, 3.3815. They are well capable of finishing much quicker

:10:29.:10:36.

than that. He was in a decent position in the home straight. A bit

:10:36.:10:46.
:10:46.:10:46.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:10:46.:11:27.

of a surprise if the Ethiopian goes suffered last night in the 800m.

:11:27.:11:37.
:11:37.:12:02.

Carvalho qualifies. Wote is out of athlete did not qualify for the last

:12:02.:12:05.

championships but since then he has won the European under 23

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:55.

championships and has improved the final in first place so far.

:12:55.:13:05.
:13:05.:13:28.

Christian reef of Germany has been the Olympic Games but since then he

:13:28.:13:33.

has jumped well. He has not done any of the Diamond League is but he

:13:33.:13:40.

looks full of confidence there. Just one centimetre short of the

:13:40.:13:46.

qualifier. There is the giant cage surrounding

:13:46.:13:51.

the Hammer Circle. Somewhere in that group is the British record-holder,

:13:51.:14:00.

Sophie Hitchon. Just testing out the circle. What a competitor she has

:14:00.:14:07.

been in recent years. The world junior champion, the European under

:14:07.:14:13.

23 champion and both of those titles were won with the last throes she

:14:13.:14:22.

took in the competition. She is a very good competitor. More from

:14:22.:14:31.

Sophie later. To a backdrop of the Ukrainian

:14:31.:14:41.
:14:41.:15:00.

support as we move onto the second experienced German. He has been

:15:00.:15:07.

around a long time. It was a very good race, that first heat. There is

:15:07.:15:12.

Silas Kiplagat. Even though he did win the Kenyan trials, Kiprop is the

:15:12.:15:22.
:15:22.:15:25.

stronger one. Manzano is the silver medallist at the Olympic Games. He

:15:25.:15:31.

got into a bit of bother with waving the Mexican flag on his lap of

:15:31.:15:35.

honour. A proud Mexican American. And you think of the Moroccan

:15:35.:15:45.
:15:45.:16:22.

in June. -- fast lap. This is the second heat of the men's 1500m. A

:16:22.:16:28.

couple could sneak through as fastest losers. Their first six go

:16:28.:16:38.

through automatically. The Turk went flying off for the first

:16:38.:16:47.

couple of laps. It was a great day - a great performance. He ran 53

:16:47.:16:53.

seconds for the opening lap. He is moving along at a decent pace. He

:16:53.:17:03.
:17:03.:17:04.

likes running fast and strong. He is moving. The tall Austrian, twice

:17:04.:17:10.

European finalist in this event, moves up behind. This is the second

:17:10.:17:20.
:17:20.:17:22.

of three heats. 58 seconds through them now. Ozbilen took his name

:17:22.:17:32.
:17:32.:17:33.

from his manager and godfather. He is finding out what he has got here

:17:33.:17:41.

and is determined to lead them out at a decent pace. Silas Kiplagat is

:17:41.:17:49.

in the middle of the pack - Commonwealth champion. He beat

:17:49.:17:59.
:17:59.:18:13.

Asbel Kiprop in the trials. I think if Ozbilen runs a decent race, he

:18:13.:18:21.

could feature. We are talking about challengers for Asbel Kiprop. The

:18:22.:18:26.

nearest challenger to him was Mo Farah. We have been talking about

:18:27.:18:32.

the inability of the Ethiopians not to double up in events. There was

:18:32.:18:38.

suggestion that Mo Farah wanted to do the treble. I'm not sure that

:18:38.:18:43.

would really have been on. I think commonsense prevailed Foster

:18:43.:18:53.

appears a 10,000m runner, 5000 metre runner. -- he is a 10,000m

:18:53.:19:01.

runner. He is brilliant at 1500m. I am sure their heats and final would

:19:01.:19:08.

have taken their toll. Look at Silas Kiplagat on the outside! The

:19:08.:19:14.

red and green of Kenya. He is ready to make a ramp was that he needs to

:19:14.:19:23.

start doing it now. -- make a run. The pace really is picking up as

:19:23.:19:33.
:19:33.:19:40.

they head down the back straight. Ozbilen his easing his way. These

:19:40.:19:47.

four are away comfortably. Leonel Manzano is also comfortable. He

:19:47.:19:53.

seems to be working hard. These four go through automatically. The

:19:53.:20:00.

time is not as quick as the first heat. I think there will be

:20:00.:20:08.

survivors. The Ethiopian will go through. Silas Kiplagat is looking

:20:08.:20:17.

fairly comfortable. Ozbilen is a better runner than we think. He

:20:17.:20:27.

gave himself the chance to run. Leonel Manzano, the Olympic

:20:27.:20:37.
:20:37.:20:38.

medallist, came through. Ozbilen maybe one to look at full. Another

:20:38.:20:45.

round. Semi-finals on Saturday. I think Silas Kiplagat was the pick

:20:45.:20:55.
:20:55.:21:01.

out of that group. One more heat to go. Next up is Chris O'Hare. He has

:21:01.:21:08.

a real opportunity. You could come 7th or eighth and qualifying. He is

:21:08.:21:16.

coming up in the final heat of the 1500 in the next couple of minutes.

:21:16.:21:25.

Back to the long jump. The South African. Only 7.6 D8 in the first

:21:25.:21:31.

round. He is a former Olympic silver medallist. He is a very fine

:21:31.:21:41.

athlete when he is on form. We have the Spaniard who is leading at the

:21:41.:21:45.

moment in the qualifying competition. Christian Reif of

:21:45.:21:55.
:21:55.:22:08.

place. The South African news up and is now in 6th place. -- moves

:22:08.:22:15.

up. I hope Chris O'Hare is OK. He is kneeling on the track, may be

:22:15.:22:25.
:22:25.:22:31.

concentrating. Let's hear from him time, you know everybody. When you

:22:31.:22:37.

come back, everything is a bit foreign to you. It is not too bad.

:22:37.:22:42.

You have had the experience. Coming back, it gives you more of an

:22:42.:22:47.

insight as to what you need to do to make it to the World

:22:47.:22:51.

Championships. It has provided me with an opportunity to get a great

:22:51.:22:57.

education as well, which, otherwise, I might not have done. The

:22:57.:23:05.

facilities and staff - everything - is at your disposal. At the lower

:23:05.:23:10.

levels, it is sometimes more difficult - especially being up in

:23:10.:23:16.

Scotland. A bit less gets filtered up. It is great. I am blessed I

:23:16.:23:20.

have been given the opportunity to go out there and make a name for

:23:20.:23:28.

myself. I do not want to go on record and safe I want a gold medal.

:23:28.:23:32.

That would be unrealistic. I think I will probably leave the

:23:32.:23:37.

championships disappointed unless I get a medal. This Championship is a

:23:37.:23:43.

building block on the way to begat and better things. I am very

:23:43.:23:47.

thankful I have been given this opportunity to hopefully gain some

:23:47.:23:57.
:23:57.:24:00.

experience to be able to Murdoch in future games. -- medal. It is a big

:24:00.:24:06.

moment for Chris O'Hare. He needs to stay in contact and hope it is

:24:06.:24:13.

not too quick. He has run personal bests all year. He has been

:24:13.:24:18.

training really hard. I am admiring his approach to all of this. He is

:24:18.:24:23.

a very level-headed young man. There are some very good young

:24:23.:24:33.
:24:33.:24:37.

athletes in here. The young American, at Matthew Centrowitz,

:24:37.:24:44.

may well be a role model for Chris O'Hare. He won a bronze medal in a

:24:44.:24:51.

tactical race and that shows you what could happen. Bethwell Birgen

:24:51.:24:56.

is well known to track fans. He does not win many races but can

:24:56.:25:03.

always be dangerous. Good to see British support in the stadium, as

:25:03.:25:13.
:25:13.:25:13.

ever. Scattered around. Union Jacks always in evidence. Chris O'Hare

:25:14.:25:21.

just needs to hope that somebody at least makes it a reasonable pace.

:25:21.:25:31.
:25:31.:25:58.

Matthew Centrowitz on the far left the pack. It is not that quick.

:25:58.:26:05.

They're probably aiming for 61, 62. I am delighted to see Chris O'Hare

:26:05.:26:14.

here. A bit disappointed that he is the only representative. When you

:26:14.:26:21.

look back at the glory days, it is a shame he is the only presents. He

:26:21.:26:26.

seems to have a serious approach to the sport. We only have three

:26:26.:26:36.
:26:36.:26:36.

distance runners in the team. We have an insurance system set up in

:26:36.:26:44.

Britain and they do not seem to be too many men coming through it.

:26:44.:26:49.

There is still a lot more work to be done. We have seen the benefits

:26:49.:26:54.

of giving athletes the chance to go away and train. Chris O'Hare has

:26:54.:27:00.

been a good product of that system. He needs to run a collegiate system.

:27:01.:27:06.

He told me in Barcelona, he would be heading straight back. The

:27:06.:27:11.

cross-country season starts in September. He is doing very well.

:27:12.:27:18.

It has not been that quick. A better second lap. Chris knows the

:27:18.:27:25.

time he needs to do. He is just forcing... Ate little surge would

:27:25.:27:33.

have been enough. I am a little bit more worried. If you go to the

:27:33.:27:37.

front and push on like that, you have to accept the others will take

:27:37.:27:44.

the lead at from you. You need to concentrate. It is his first time

:27:44.:27:48.

in a major championships - Chris O'Hare. When you watch athletes

:27:48.:27:53.

coming through, and to watch them by the first time in the

:27:53.:27:58.

championships, have they got the temperament? Has he got the

:27:58.:28:04.

physical ability and the ability to hold up some of these runners? He

:28:04.:28:14.

is in a bit of an exposed position. They can run a good time. It is

:28:14.:28:22.

working hard and biting hard. He is holding his position. -- for biting

:28:22.:28:32.
:28:32.:28:40.

hard. He is in a great position. He Matthew Centrowitz is a long way

:28:40.:28:49.

back. Chris O'Hare needs to work hard. It will be a blanket finish.

:28:49.:28:59.
:28:59.:29:01.

That is going to be quick enough. I am pretty sure of. He will be

:29:01.:29:06.

disappointed. He did a really good job. He is probably now thinking he

:29:06.:29:12.

might have been run out. I think he is going to be quick enough to go

:29:12.:29:21.

through. If he is under three point 40, he will be one of the fastest

:29:21.:29:28.

losers. -- 3.40. His first time in a major championships, prepared

:29:28.:29:37.

mentally and physically. He has some real talent outside a hem.

:29:37.:29:45.

Look, he is challenged. -- him. Mentally he is strong enough.

:29:45.:29:50.

Physically, not quite strong enough. He has never had this level of

:29:50.:29:58.

quality around him. He did not lose it. He hung on. He was in the right

:29:58.:30:04.

place. Now he is tired, he is working. This is what the training

:30:04.:30:11.

is for. These guys are real stars. Fatigue is setting in. The crowd

:30:11.:30:19.

will come through. He has just missed out on 6th place but I think

:30:19.:30:23.

that is good enough for qualification. I hope he knows it.

:30:23.:30:29.

He might be thinking, I have lost it, I have lost it, they are better

:30:29.:30:36.

than me. That was an extremely impressive performance. Looked at

:30:36.:30:45.

him! This is a young man who was so determined. He said he will be

:30:45.:30:49.

disappointed if he does not get a medal but I am delighted we will be

:30:49.:30:54.

able to see him run again in the semi-final. That was a really good

:30:54.:31:04.
:31:04.:31:23.

congratulations. I thought I would fight from a position and not mess

:31:23.:31:31.

about. I would do something big. Everybody is fresh today. Hopefully

:31:31.:31:41.
:31:41.:31:43.

I will have a bit more. Were you worried you would not getting to the

:31:43.:31:48.

automatic qualifying? If I am going to be in as the fastest Ludo, it

:31:49.:31:54.

will be because I have worked as hard as hell. -- fastest loser. If I

:31:54.:32:00.

can do that and show my gut and run with heart, I will be fine. You have

:32:00.:32:10.
:32:10.:32:15.

certainly done that. We will see you advantage. He made sure he went

:32:15.:32:25.
:32:25.:32:58.

and in terms of qualification times. There will be two semifinals.

:32:58.:33:02.

Aleksandr Menkov now in the long jump. He competed in the Birmingham

:33:02.:33:06.

Diamond League event which he won. And he also competed in London. He

:33:06.:33:13.

won that as well. He has only lost once this year. That is better. He

:33:13.:33:23.
:33:23.:33:46.

has been a bit below par this champion in the background. The

:33:46.:33:56.
:33:56.:34:21.

this year. Four times the world the pitch shows what the athletes

:34:21.:34:25.

have to jump. That gives a good indication that it was well below

:34:25.:34:35.
:34:35.:34:35.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:34:35.:35:19.

been a very useful jump in recent years, world indoor champion and

:35:19.:35:29.
:35:29.:35:43.

tremendous vertical lift. That is the second longest we have seen this

:35:43.:35:50.

morning. You can see the two pits lying in

:35:50.:35:55.

parallel there. One behind the other. A good opportunity for us to

:35:55.:36:03.

see every jumper in action. On the long jump runway now is Greg

:36:03.:36:10.

Rutherford. He is in 10th place. Not Tarantino plays in the final. -- not

:36:10.:36:20.
:36:20.:36:44.

take-off there but I think he was rotating forwards. The balance on

:36:44.:36:53.

the take-off was not quite right. Greg Rutherford may be in a bit of

:36:53.:37:03.

trouble. One and a half rounds to go of athletes trying to do the same as

:37:03.:37:13.
:37:13.:37:19.

Greg which is to qualify at 8.10 describing the action. 33 years ago

:37:19.:37:24.

he was down in the infield in the Hammer Circle competing for the

:37:24.:37:31.

Moscow Olympics. Here are his memories. It was not a happy Olympic

:37:31.:37:37.

James -- games. My job at the time was as a schoolteacher. The board of

:37:37.:37:41.

governors did not want me to go to Moscow. Margaret Thatcher was in

:37:41.:37:46.

power and there was a lot of anti-feeling about Mrs Thatcher

:37:46.:37:51.

putting pressure on the athletes. One-way to bring home the enormity

:37:51.:37:58.

of the Russian people invading Afghanistan, is to boycott the

:37:58.:38:03.

Olympic Games. Are you still hoping to go to Moscow? That is what I am

:38:04.:38:08.

training for. I had a letter from a gentleman who said he had been in

:38:08.:38:16.

the army but was retired. He threatened to firebomb my house.

:38:16.:38:20.

That was the amount of passionate feelings that there was amongst the

:38:20.:38:26.

British public. Half the population said, you have got to go. The other

:38:26.:38:30.

half said we should not have any involvement with the Moscow Olympic

:38:30.:38:39.

Games. I did not go to the opening ceremony. I do not think any British

:38:39.:38:44.

team members did. It was only the leader of the team, Dick Harmon,

:38:44.:38:50.

proudly carrying the Union Flag. The competition itself was a bit of an

:38:50.:38:54.

anti-climax for all sorts of reasons. I did not make the final,

:38:54.:39:00.

unfortunately. I had been ill before the games started. The first Russian

:39:00.:39:10.
:39:10.:39:17.

to walk into the Hammer Circle broke the very first throw. That world

:39:17.:39:21.

record was outstanding. It came in the biggest competition of the

:39:21.:39:26.

decade. The Moscow Olympics were absolutely huge. I flew out, I

:39:26.:39:31.

competed and I flew back the next day. I was away for three or four

:39:31.:39:38.

days altogether. It was a massive anti-climax. No regrets. I am glad I

:39:38.:39:42.

went but I cannot really talk with any great perspective about what

:39:42.:39:46.

Moscow was doing, what Russia was doing, in terms of the promotion of

:39:46.:39:52.

the games. The only thing I heard was that no child under the age of

:39:52.:39:56.

16 was allowed anywhere near the Olympic Stadium. They had all been

:39:56.:40:00.

shipped off to some accounts so they would not come into contact with any

:40:00.:40:07.

decadent Westerners. I think if I had had my time over again, I might

:40:07.:40:11.

have considered more seriously about me going to games like that, because

:40:11.:40:16.

after all, what the USSR did was unforgivable. I think history will

:40:16.:40:20.

tell that story in a slightly different way to the story we were

:40:20.:40:25.

being given as young athletes. But I went, I did my thing as best I

:40:25.:40:35.
:40:35.:40:35.

could, and that was it. But it did have a great effect on some people.

:40:35.:40:40.

Lovely memory there from Paul Dickenson. I am delighted to say,

:40:40.:40:43.

joining me in the studio, the world record holder for the long jump,

:40:43.:40:49.

Mike Powell. Good to see you. to see you, buddy. You are looking

:40:49.:40:59.
:40:59.:41:01.

trim. What was the regime? Running, 20 kilometres a day, running on the

:41:01.:41:04.

treadmill, eating fruit and vegetables, drinking water, that was

:41:04.:41:14.

the toughest thing. Can you still jump eight metres? If I can jump

:41:14.:41:20.

that, I will be out here. What are you making of the guys at

:41:20.:41:28.

the moment? We got excited about the Spanish jump. 8.25 is good for a

:41:28.:41:35.

qualifying round. If I jump that, I am ready. For me, I looked at the

:41:35.:41:42.

qualifying rounds, simply as that, what is the qualifying distance? One

:41:42.:41:51.

jump and get out, take care of it. Greg has his third jump. He has been

:41:51.:41:54.

struggling with a hamstring injury. He is trying to nurse his body

:41:54.:42:02.

through, isn't he? Having had the Olympics last year, I'm sure his

:42:02.:42:08.

life has changed and team pulled in different directions. Part of life

:42:08.:42:12.

is having to deal with that pressure, that notoriety and he is

:42:12.:42:18.

having to feel it. In terms of quality of the men's long jump, you

:42:18.:42:25.

look back to you and Carl, what do you think it is with the long jump

:42:26.:42:31.

at the moment? I think it may be the expectation. Coming to a competition

:42:31.:42:36.

like, for example, 1991, I was coming to the competition knowing I

:42:36.:42:46.
:42:46.:42:46.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:42:46.:43:34.

jumping so far, Caceras, 8.25, then Christian Reif of Germany. Then they

:43:34.:43:43.

are all below eight metres. Aleksandr Menkov is 7.95. That may

:43:43.:43:53.
:43:53.:44:05.

be an improvement for Greg. Let's something has happened in the

:44:05.:44:09.

previous pool as well. Sophie Hitchon waiting to go in the

:44:09.:44:14.

second qualifying pool in the women's hammer. It is a massive

:44:14.:44:18.

qualifying distance required. The last couple of times she has had to

:44:18.:44:23.

qualify for a major final, she has done it in style. She broke the

:44:23.:44:27.

British record when she qualified for the Olympic final. She has got

:44:27.:44:37.
:44:37.:44:37.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:44:37.:45:30.

far better than she was a couple of said it does help. It gives good

:45:30.:45:40.
:45:40.:45:48.

posture and balance. That is some Hitchon. She will have two more the

:45:48.:45:58.
:45:58.:46:15.

round? He has been close to Carl Lewis in the past but has never

:46:15.:46:25.
:46:25.:46:26.

beaten him. He really went for that. That is huge. That is history in

:46:26.:46:33.

the making. A world record by five centimetres. Mike Powell is the new

:46:33.:46:39.

world champion. We are looking, I think, at the new world champion.

:46:40.:46:46.

That is better. The longest jump we have seen today by far. No doubt

:46:46.:46:56.
:46:56.:47:04.

about who will be the world competition in 1991 was incredible.

:47:04.:47:11.

It was the way bet you and Carl were trading jump for jump. -- that.

:47:11.:47:18.

I knew I would have to jump the world record to beat him. He fouled

:47:18.:47:24.

a jump and in nine metres and I thought, this is going to be a long

:47:24.:47:28.

day. I thought he would jump nine metres after I broke the world

:47:28.:47:36.

record and then I would jump 9. 10. That was the most celebrated world

:47:36.:47:45.

record in the book. What was it like to break it? For me, it was

:47:45.:47:50.

the culmination of my whole life. Everything from being turned dam on

:47:50.:47:57.

dates... That is what everybody. A world record for you. What was Carl

:47:57.:48:03.

Lewis like? He did not like to lose, did he? He was so used to winning

:48:03.:48:10.

and we got so used to losing to him. I did not accept it. I thought it

:48:10.:48:17.

would take time but I would get there one day. I told myself his

:48:17.:48:22.

jump would not win and the next jump was a world record. Let's talk

:48:23.:48:29.

about technique. A lot of the jumpers are over rotating. You had

:48:29.:48:36.

incredible speed but still got massive great leg shoot. I was

:48:36.:48:41.

trying to improve my technique all the time. I wanted to improve my

:48:41.:48:46.

running technique - my speed - and they might take off and flight.

:48:46.:48:56.
:48:56.:48:57.

Always improving. -- and my take off. The guys are not keeping their

:48:57.:49:07.
:49:07.:49:09.

centre of gravity high. It is tough for me. What do I know? I'm just a

:49:09.:49:16.

world record holder. What do you make of that competition? We talk

:49:16.:49:24.

about drama and nail-biting stuff. He will win? It was just

:49:24.:49:29.

extraordinary. It really elevated the whole championships. It was

:49:29.:49:38.

rare. I was thrilled. We are going to head back to the long jump.

:49:38.:49:44.

certainly are. Greg Rutherford is hanging on by his fingernails in

:49:44.:49:54.
:49:54.:50:00.

the long jump qualification. The American collegiate champion is a

:50:00.:50:10.
:50:10.:50:12.

fine talent. Forbes, that is a good jump. This could mean that Greg

:50:12.:50:17.

Rutherford not only dropped stand another place but may not qualified

:50:17.:50:23.

for the final. He has had all sorts of injury problems. He would be the

:50:23.:50:28.

first person not to excuse himself but he probably knows he has not

:50:28.:50:35.

jumped particularly well here. He is not 100% fit. The Olympic

:50:35.:50:40.

champion, I do not think, will become the world champion. Forbes

:50:40.:50:50.
:50:50.:50:57.

looks as though he has made it place. One of the last men to jump.

:50:57.:51:04.

He too has gone wrong. Oh, my goodness! This definitely means

:51:04.:51:09.

that Greg Rutherford will finish in 13th place overall out of both

:51:09.:51:15.

pools. Only 12 athletes well qualified for the final. It really

:51:15.:51:25.
:51:25.:51:32.

aware of what has happened in the last couple of minutes. Again it is

:51:32.:51:36.

long. Greg Rutherford now realises he is not going to contest the

:51:36.:51:40.

World Championship final on Friday. A big disappointment for British

:51:40.:51:49.

fans but a massive disappointment for the Olympic champion. It was

:51:49.:51:55.

not a dramatic Blanc jump qualifying competition. Certainly a

:51:55.:52:05.
:52:05.:52:11.

on that list. The most important thing for us is that Greg

:52:11.:52:19.

Rutherford is not on that list and he does not go through to the final.

:52:19.:52:23.

Massive disappointment for Greg Rutherford. It is easy to be wise

:52:23.:52:28.

with the benefit of hindsight but he is probably wishing he stayed at

:52:28.:52:32.

home. There were several times in my career I wish I had made that

:52:33.:52:38.

decision. As Olympic champion, you put so much expectation on yourself.

:52:38.:52:43.

If you make the decision to put yourself out there and compete, and

:52:43.:52:51.

not deliver, it hurts. It is painful. He was close. He did not

:52:51.:52:56.

look good and he has missed a lot of work. It is not surprising

:52:56.:53:01.

really. If he had got through qualifying and he had got

:53:01.:53:07.

confidence, maybe he could have picked on. He was in the same

:53:07.:53:10.

situation as Dwight Phillips. With experience, he might have been able

:53:11.:53:16.

to do something. He was not his normal self. As an athlete, I would

:53:16.:53:26.
:53:26.:53:27.

rather give it a shot and try. a look at this for us! He has over

:53:27.:53:34.

rotated. The speed was not there. He is not 100%. He has had a few

:53:35.:53:39.

injury problems and has almost tried to adjust his technique to

:53:39.:53:44.

avoid one niggle and ended up with something else. That is how it goes.

:53:44.:53:50.

Some athletes have a succession of injuries. It is not even the

:53:50.:53:54.

original one that has been bothering them. It is hard. It is

:53:54.:53:58.

not easy. It is difficult to judge and athletes decisions about

:53:58.:54:03.

whether or not they should be in championships. They need to go with

:54:03.:54:11.

whatever happens. We were talking about 1991. Your memories of 1993

:54:11.:54:17.

instant cut. I remember thinking, I am probably going to win the

:54:17.:54:23.

competition. I am not going to have the shortest jump in competition.

:54:23.:54:30.

That is how I completed. I competed against you when you would triple

:54:30.:54:37.

jumping. I competed in a high jumper. I want all the attention.

:54:37.:54:46.

Notice me! I was at home. I so wanted to be there. Electricity

:54:46.:54:50.

surrounded the championships. You had to stamp your authority on it

:54:50.:54:58.

and say, I am here. Being a champion is great. With Greg

:54:58.:55:05.

Rutherford winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games, I wish I had

:55:05.:55:13.

a gold medal at the Olympic Games are like you guys! You never know

:55:13.:55:20.

where your best year will coincide. Whether it will coincide with an

:55:20.:55:25.

Olympic cycle. Carl Lewis made things a little bit tough.

:55:25.:55:30.

Competing against a living legend was difficult. I accomplished

:55:30.:55:35.

everything I wanted to accomplish except Olympic gold. Daley Thompson

:55:35.:55:39.

told me in 1996, you are not defined by the Olympics, you are

:55:39.:55:49.

defined by the world record. Wise words form him. -- from him. Let's

:55:49.:55:53.

hear from Greg Rutherford. Mike Powell is talking about always

:55:53.:55:58.

wanting to compete. He would have done the same. Was that your mind

:55:58.:56:03.

set? The season had not been going too badly up until Paris when I

:56:03.:56:10.

ruptured one of my hamstrings. I broke all the rules in be covering

:56:10.:56:17.

more quickly than anyone in history. I felt fantastic. I felt confident.

:56:17.:56:23.

This morning, I thought it was going to be a good day. I gave it

:56:23.:56:28.

everything. I had to make a lot of adaptations to make it work. It did

:56:28.:56:33.

not. That is the hard facts. were in a qualifying position for a

:56:33.:56:38.

while. The last couple of jumps pushed you out. When did

:56:38.:56:44.

realisation hit you? I knew it was up going to be long enough. Not

:56:44.:56:53.

particularly competitive. I expected a few guys, some great

:56:53.:56:59.

jumpers, he went after me. It was a bad day. I tried my hardest out

:56:59.:57:03.

there to make it work. Today I could not time it properly and get

:57:04.:57:10.

the distances I wanted. Her how difficult a decision is it, as

:57:10.:57:16.

Olympic champion, you have had a really serious injury and you go,

:57:16.:57:23.

is it worth giving it a go? Initially, I basically said, no

:57:23.:57:28.

chance. When they scans it and looked at it, anyone who has

:57:28.:57:34.

ruptured a muscle, they know it is a serious injury to have. Within

:57:34.:57:40.

two weeks it started to heal. I felt great. I took the decision

:57:40.:57:46.

upon myself. I spoke to UK and they did everything they possibly could

:57:46.:57:53.

to make sure I was fit and healthy. I know how to compete at

:57:53.:57:58.

competitions. I felt better than I was today. I was not good enough

:57:58.:58:07.

and they are the hard facts. Grade certainly fronted up there. You win

:58:07.:58:16.

an Olympic title. -- Greg Rutherford. Being Olympic champion,

:58:16.:58:23.

it kind of trumps everything. You need to give him a shot. He did not

:58:23.:58:30.

do well here but he gave it a shot. You have had those dilemmas. How do

:58:30.:58:38.

you judge it? Am I fit enough to go? People ask me what my biggest

:58:38.:58:46.

regret is. I always think, do not have regrets. My biggest regret was

:58:46.:58:53.

not going to the start line in Paris. I felt great and I was not

:58:53.:58:58.

there. I will never know. If you are there, you know you are not

:58:58.:59:03.

good enough but you gave yourself the chance. Sitting at home and

:59:03.:59:08.

watching is a hard way to find out. It is difficult when it is at the

:59:08.:59:13.

expense of someone else. There is the issue of whether Chris Thomson

:59:13.:59:19.

should have been able to come. qualification for Chris Rutherford

:59:19.:59:29.
:59:29.:59:36.

-- Greg Rutherford but hopefully Sophie we'll get through. Slightly

:59:36.:59:42.

faster on that occasion. The result is about the same as she threw in

:59:42.:59:47.

the first round. The athletes in that corner of the stadium are

:59:47.:59:53.

still bathed in sunshine. Once again, I feel it will have to rely

:59:53.:00:00.

on a third brilliant throw from Sophie Hitchon. She did it when she

:00:01.:00:09.

won the world junior title. She is in 9th place but only in that pool.

:00:09.:00:15.

There is good news as we have a look at the magnificent building.

:00:15.:00:22.

Good news in the 50km walk. Over 40 kilometres gone in it. Naturally we

:00:22.:00:32.
:00:32.:00:48.

Russians were dominating. But there is the leader, Robert Heffernan of

:00:48.:00:53.

Ireland, who finished fourth in the European champions last time. He is

:00:53.:01:03.
:01:03.:01:04.

leading. Earlier on, it was a procession of Russian athletes in

:01:04.:01:09.

first and second place. It is Robert Heffernan who has taken this race by

:01:09.:01:13.

the scruff of the neck now. Unfortunately for us, we will be off

:01:13.:01:19.

air by the time the walk finishes but you can follow it I am sure on

:01:19.:01:26.

the BBC website. Robert Heffernan of Ireland is leading at the moment.

:01:26.:01:36.

The conditions this morning have been very strange. We started off in

:01:36.:01:41.

glorious conditions. The rain was belting down. Then the sun came out

:01:41.:01:47.

and it gradually got a little more humid. There is the first Russian

:01:47.:01:54.

coming round the top bend. The lead is not a big one but it is

:01:54.:02:00.

definitely Robert Heffernan of Ireland who leads this race walk.

:02:00.:02:10.
:02:10.:02:22.

Jarrod talent looks as if he is Commonwealth Walker at the moment.

:02:22.:02:30.

He looks like he could be in with a shout of a medal here. But Robert

:02:30.:02:36.

Heffernan, having the race of his life. Jared Talent is a former

:02:37.:02:45.

Olympic wordlist. And certainly has been a major force in road walking

:02:45.:02:53.

over the last decade. Robert Heffernan is in the Emerald Green of

:02:53.:02:57.

Ireland. He leads and he could be heading towards Ireland's first gold

:02:57.:03:07.
:03:07.:03:14.

all the action across the BBC. This year, the BBC will bring you

:03:14.:03:16.

more ways to enjoy the world athletics championship than ever

:03:16.:03:26.
:03:26.:03:27.

:03:37.:03:38.

:03:48.:04:00.

join Mark Pooja which -- mark Pier gossip and pictures.

:04:00.:04:04.

And you can tweet us. We would love to hear your views. A couple of

:04:04.:04:08.

tweets have come in. We were chatting about selection policy

:04:08.:04:15.

earlier. Ryan Brookdale says first round KO but a PB is not acceptable

:04:15.:04:21.

any more. The Olympics gave us a winning mentality, that should drive

:04:21.:04:27.

future expectations. Tough stuff, Paula. My question would be how

:04:27.:04:31.

would you get to winning unless you go through that? Very few people

:04:31.:04:35.

come in and we'll win at their first Championships. You want to get

:04:35.:04:38.

through the rounds but for a lot of youngsters coming in, their goal is

:04:38.:04:43.

to get to the next round and then to get to the next round and then to

:04:43.:04:50.

win it. Like your experiences? I first started competing in 1985 on

:04:50.:04:54.

the European circuit, I lost every competition. I thought to myself, I

:04:54.:05:00.

am not good enough to do this stuff. I almost gave up. It takes a couple

:05:00.:05:04.

of years to get used to travelling, competing in big competitions when

:05:04.:05:11.

you need to. Then you become a champion. It takes time. One more

:05:11.:05:17.

tweet very quickly. Paula Radcliffe vowels she can go for one last shot

:05:17.:05:22.

at marathon glory. London marathon glory. Not just any marathon, the

:05:23.:05:29.

London Marathon. You are giving me that look. That is not a tweet! That

:05:29.:05:33.

is taken from an article. I said I would love to run one more London

:05:33.:05:37.

and one more New York but I am taking it step-by-step to see what

:05:37.:05:41.

mice that can do. I would love to run ten more but realistically I

:05:41.:05:48.

would like to run one more of each. The trouble of Twitter. Am I the

:05:48.:05:53.

problem? I am getting a hard time here! Let's look back to last

:05:53.:05:59.

night. American victory in the 400m. It was the big head-to-head between

:05:59.:06:09.
:06:09.:06:20.

Focus, focus, focus. Stay cool. Keep your head. Stride after stride after

:06:20.:06:30.
:06:30.:06:32.

stride. Kirani James is going to take hold. Believe, always believe.

:06:32.:06:38.

LaShawn Merritt knows what he has to do. Glory awaits. Legend Derry

:06:38.:06:48.
:06:48.:07:01.

status awaits. It is yours to take. away very quickly. He takes a couple

:07:01.:07:08.

of yards out Santos and Kirani James. Santos will finish quickly.

:07:08.:07:18.
:07:18.:07:27.

top end. The American is making him have two work hard. Two metres ahead

:07:27.:07:32.

at the moment. Kirani James is a long way back. Look at LaShawn

:07:32.:07:35.

Merritt go! Kirani James is disappearing. It is all about

:07:36.:07:41.

LaShawn Merritt. He will take it. What a performance. He destroyed

:07:41.:07:51.
:07:51.:07:56.

performance and after we went off air he spoke to Phil Jones.

:07:56.:07:59.

What a performance. An electric atmosphere here because of

:07:59.:08:06.

Isinbayeva. It was not because of me? ! And because of you no doubt!

:08:06.:08:14.

It was great. The atmosphere was great. I fed off it a little bit. I

:08:14.:08:19.

had a great lane going into the final. I was confident. I have been

:08:19.:08:24.

working hard this year to come here and put a great race together. I

:08:25.:08:31.

did. It was billed bypass media types as you against Kirani James

:08:31.:08:34.

for the final but it seemed when you put your foot on the gas there was

:08:34.:08:42.

no response from Kirani James. have said this all through my finals

:08:42.:08:46.

and my prelims, nobody has won the race yet. Eight men were going to

:08:46.:08:52.

line up and we were going to go at it. It was not chosen who was first

:08:52.:08:57.

second or third yet. Eight grown men lined up and we went at it and

:08:57.:09:01.

America got top two. How does it feel being draped in that flag

:09:01.:09:06.

having regained your world title? feels good. Last year I did not get

:09:06.:09:11.

a chance to compete because of an injury. I wanted to come out on the

:09:11.:09:15.

stage and represent my sponsor Rand might country and my family and I

:09:15.:09:20.

did. Congratulations. He has had some

:09:20.:09:27.

tough times. The good thing is they have a rivalry. There is a true

:09:27.:09:35.

rivalry now. Kirani James has been doing so well. LaShawn put the

:09:35.:09:41.

pressure on early. He put the pressure on him and when the race

:09:41.:09:51.
:09:51.:09:52.

came, James had nothing to do. that point, it was as if Kirani

:09:52.:09:58.

said, I am not going to catch him. He broke him at that point and then

:09:58.:10:04.

everyone else started to come. Kirani is so young. You know he can

:10:04.:10:07.

run faster. This is one time when a learning experience will make him

:10:07.:10:17.
:10:17.:10:20.

better. It is LaShawn's turn right now. Denise is pulling faces at us.

:10:20.:10:25.

I was just shaking my head. Watching the race last night it did not seem

:10:25.:10:30.

as if Kirani was saying I am not going to run for a medal. I think he

:10:30.:10:34.

blew a gasket trying to chase LaShawn and by the time he came off

:10:34.:10:39.

the town he was still in contention but it had taken so much out of him,

:10:39.:10:46.

that first 200, that he had nothing else to give. He is a 43.9 runner,

:10:46.:10:51.

he should have been able to stick close to that pace. You should.

:10:51.:10:56.

Nobody would have predicted that result at all. But I think

:10:56.:11:00.

psychologically, he had totally blown it. The lactic had set in and

:11:00.:11:06.

there was no way to go from there. Mike, thank you for joining us. It

:11:06.:11:10.

is always at pleasure. We will head back to the hammer to see how Sophie

:11:10.:11:20.
:11:20.:11:25.

event I ever commented on. Good memories. Both of this woman's

:11:25.:11:30.

parents were Olympic champions in this stadium in 1980 and one of them

:11:30.:11:36.

is still the world record for the men's hammer. That was a beautiful

:11:36.:11:42.

throw, sailing out well beyond the qualifying mark of 73 metres. She's

:11:42.:11:52.
:11:52.:11:53.

years old. Her mum Lyudmila, the Olympic 100m champion in Moscow in

:11:53.:12:00.

1980. Superb credentials. Superb genes as well. They have obviously

:12:00.:12:10.
:12:10.:12:42.

Championships in 1996. She has made line. Each one of these throwers who

:12:42.:12:45.

goes further than 69 metres is putting Sophie Hitchon down another

:12:45.:12:55.
:12:55.:12:55.

Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:12:55.:13:38.

fireworks on the delivery but that is long. 75 metres is the longest we

:13:38.:13:48.
:13:48.:14:00.

have seen so far by another Chinese of deliveries I have ever seen but

:14:00.:14:10.
:14:10.:14:12.

pretty useful. She's through to the final.

:14:12.:14:15.

Now Sophie. Just remember when you won the world Junior Championships

:14:15.:14:19.

on your very last throw. Remember when you qualified for the Olympic

:14:19.:14:29.
:14:29.:14:37.

final with your last throw. This is just over the 65 metre line. Sophie

:14:37.:14:45.

is way below par this morning. I do not know if there is a problem. I

:14:45.:14:55.
:14:55.:15:17.

Mike Powell may have gone but next to me now is Katarina Johnson-

:15:17.:15:22.

Thompson. We will speak in a second. Vets have a look back at the

:15:22.:15:32.
:15:32.:16:12.

everybody's expectations. She is going for it. Katarina Johnson-

:16:12.:16:22.
:16:22.:16:23.

Thompson finishes Beth with a new lifetime there. -- 5th. 6449 points.

:16:23.:16:29.

Is that better than you expected? lot better. The target for the

:16:29.:16:35.

season was to get that little bit more. I did not think at the end of

:16:35.:16:41.

day one I was going to progress that match. I had a Stormer on the

:16:41.:16:46.

second day and I have a personal best. The let's talk about the

:16:46.:16:55.

first event, the 100m hurdles. always really nervous about this. I

:16:55.:17:05.
:17:05.:17:05.

got left in the blocks. Me and my coach had been practising but my

:17:05.:17:11.

reaction time let me down. It was not that bad. I was only just off a

:17:11.:17:15.

lifetime best but I am always nervous for the hurdles because you

:17:15.:17:25.
:17:25.:17:28.

only get one Aberu Kebede attempt. -- one attempt. The long jump, I

:17:28.:17:37.

had a huge note jump in my third round, I believe. It is all about

:17:37.:17:43.

buts and maybe is. That is the same for every athlete. If I had done it

:17:43.:17:50.

differently, I might have got a medal. I gave it all in the 800.

:17:50.:17:56.

think you should be incredibly proud of yourself. I have some

:17:56.:18:04.

scissors in my back to cut to a head for the high jump. -- in my

:18:04.:18:14.
:18:14.:18:18.

bag. It was the head that knocked it off. I was adamant that a did

:18:18.:18:24.

not touch it. I know you had problems in the shot put. To

:18:24.:18:30.

recover like you did, with a storming 200, and then to get a

:18:30.:18:36.

personal best on the second day with the long jump, javelin, 800.

:18:36.:18:43.

You need to hold your head high. You are still in the development

:18:43.:18:50.

phase. It is not easy to leap forward in such big chunks. She is

:18:50.:18:56.

doing that which so bodes well. What we have all said, so much room

:18:56.:19:01.

for development. In the shot put, so much more you can do with

:19:01.:19:06.

conditioning and strength. And technique as well. I am trying to

:19:06.:19:15.

be nice! Where do you see the big games? Obviously, with a shot-put,

:19:15.:19:22.

but overall. I have improved overall. I did not think I would

:19:22.:19:28.

make that much progress, especially when I got injured. I shot put and

:19:28.:19:36.

javelin were not really improving. -- my shot put. With the hurdles as

:19:36.:19:41.

well. Maybe getting some consistency. I needed to get on the

:19:41.:19:48.

board with the long jump. I can clearly see light at the end of the

:19:48.:19:55.

tunnel. My coach said it is a long tunnel. Especially in the shot put.

:19:55.:20:02.

This is the all-time lists for Britain's best pentathletes. You

:20:03.:20:10.

are in 5th place. That is brilliant. I could never have dreamed of doing

:20:10.:20:17.

what you have done at this stage of my career. Your coach is right. It

:20:17.:20:24.

is about progression. You have a consolidation and then there is a

:20:24.:20:30.

plateau and Ben you roll it for it. What is good is your competitor

:20:30.:20:36.

brain. -- then it you roll it forward. You took your chances and

:20:36.:20:43.

you delivered. What I would like to see in the shot put, I want to see

:20:43.:20:49.

warming up and looking like you are there. Not thinking, I am not going

:20:49.:20:55.

to throw well because it is my Week event. What is your attitude like

:20:55.:21:03.

to training? Is it like, I want to get her back and be better? I think

:21:03.:21:08.

I placed 30th and it is very embarrassing. It is weird to think

:21:08.:21:14.

I can still come 5th without placing. My coach and I have worked

:21:14.:21:20.

really hard on both the shot and the javelin. That has been the main

:21:20.:21:25.

aim for the season. We will need to sit down and find a new route but I

:21:25.:21:28.

am very motivated to get better in that. That is the only thing that

:21:28.:21:38.
:21:38.:21:39.

is holding me back. Just remember, do not beat yourself up. Eunice

:21:39.:21:49.
:21:49.:21:55.

Barber was terrible and she scored 6.8, 6.9. A word until captain and

:21:55.:22:05.
:22:05.:22:05.

what she achieved. I got to watch. She gave an amazing team speech in

:22:05.:22:10.

Barcelona. She said never to give up. She clearly did not. I was

:22:10.:22:18.

speaking to the coach and he said every one thousandth of a second

:22:18.:22:28.
:22:28.:22:36.

counts. I tried my hardest. Denise Ohuruogu will have to try to stay

:22:36.:22:46.
:22:46.:22:50.

in contact. It is Madeleine non-Jew who comes to the fore. -- Monshu.

:22:50.:22:56.

Will she get there? Christine it is coming. She might just have made it.

:22:56.:23:02.

How are you feeling the morning after the night before? It is

:23:02.:23:08.

really surreal. We have prepared so much for this. Everything has been

:23:08.:23:14.

on point. I had thought about nothing more than the final. Now it

:23:14.:23:22.

has gone. It is with not having it there. The moment you looked up at

:23:22.:23:32.
:23:32.:23:32.

the screen... I was thinking, Oh my God, oh my God! She is looking, we

:23:32.:23:38.

are looking. She has got it. Another gold medal and Christine

:23:38.:23:44.

Ohuruogu is world champion again. cross the line. Even though I

:23:44.:23:48.

worked really hard I really would love to come first. Please let

:23:48.:23:54.

become first. I did not want to look at the screen. When my name

:23:54.:23:59.

came up, that was the best feeling ever. Christine Ohuruogu is world

:23:59.:24:08.

champion again and is now the British record holder. I could

:24:08.:24:13.

remember what the record was and I thought, I have got it. By the

:24:13.:24:20.

smallest of margins, the scene to do it every time. It was the

:24:20.:24:28.

smallest of margins. -- you seem to do it. I wanted the national record

:24:28.:24:34.

more than anything. I have been working for that every year.

:24:34.:24:40.

inspire people. That seems to be important to you. I always believes

:24:40.:24:46.

that you are blessed to be a blessing to other people. There are

:24:46.:24:50.

young ones coming after me and I want to set the right example and

:24:50.:24:54.

give them something to aim for. I have been successful and able to

:24:54.:24:59.

make things work. These things are not given to us. We have to take

:24:59.:25:04.

what we want. Nothing will be handed over. The last few days will

:25:04.:25:14.
:25:14.:25:16.

be the hardest I have had in my life. Perseverance works. The one

:25:16.:25:22.

word that comes to your head is perseverance. You have a big heart,

:25:22.:25:32.
:25:32.:25:38.

Christine Ohuruogu, I am very proud That was a great interview. An

:25:38.:25:41.

inspirational performance from the team captain. What is the other

:25:41.:25:47.

sphere like in the team at the moment? Very positive. Especially

:25:47.:25:52.

after Christine Ohuruogu. Everyone got inspired to go out there and

:25:52.:25:58.

give it their all. After last year and the speech by Christine,

:25:58.:26:04.

everyone is inspired and it cannot wait to get onto the track. Also

:26:04.:26:10.

looking forward to a second gold medal from Mo Farah. Definitely.

:26:10.:26:20.

How is the body? Had he recovered? I am exhausted. -- have you

:26:20.:26:29.

recovered? Tomorrow morning, we are back here in the stadium in the

:26:29.:26:39.
:26:39.:27:08.

Paul Dickinson. -- let as head out. Here we go. The Irish athlete is in

:27:08.:27:17.

the lead. What do you make of the performance by Robert Heffernan?

:27:17.:27:22.

do not think they have got a medal on the men's side. It would be a

:27:22.:27:27.

great achievement for him if he can keep this up. How long has he got

:27:27.:27:37.

to go - 10 minutes? We will not see the end of it but we can keep up-

:27:37.:27:45.

to-date by it live text. Talking about inspiration from the team,

:27:45.:27:51.

Perri Shakes-Drayton will have drawn a lot of strength from the

:27:51.:27:55.

performance of Christine. It depends on the lane draw. We have a

:27:55.:28:01.

person who is a confident. She has had all her apprenticeships at

:28:01.:28:04.

championships. It is really important and a medal is in sight.

:28:04.:28:14.
:28:14.:28:30.

event but favourites do not always win. Let's have a look at what is

:28:30.:28:37.

coming up tomorrow morning. In terms of time, we are on BBC Two at

:28:37.:28:41.
