British civilisation has been built on our relationship with horses. We

:00:29.:00:32.

have lived with them, worked with them, played with them, competed on

:00:33.:00:37.

them. And right now, British equestrian sport is at an all-time

:00:38.:00:42.

high because we have the number one riders in dressage, show jumping and

:00:43.:00:48.

in eventing, with William Fox-Pitt and this is the number 1 three-day

:00:49.:00:54.

event. We are here at Badminton House in Gloucestershire for the

:00:55.:00:56.

ultimate test of horse and rider. This year we have record prize

:00:57.:01:37.

money. ?80,000 going to the winner and 14 nations represented from as

:01:38.:01:42.

far afield as Australia and New Zealand and closer to home, Sweden,

:01:43.:01:45.

France, Italy and Great Britain. Let's look at the major contenders

:01:46.:01:54.

for the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy. William Fox Pi it, t has two high

:01:55.:01:59.

class horses and will be looking to add to his first Badminton title.

:02:00.:02:06.

New Zealand's Andrew Nicol sown has four Burley titles and Kentucky to

:02:07.:02:11.

his name but Badminton has eluded him. He has competed more times than

:02:12.:02:16.

anyone else. He wants to win. Sir Mark Todd is no stranger to the

:02:17.:02:20.

podium here at Badminton. At 58 he is the oldest rider and is as

:02:21.:02:26.

competitive as ever. Mary King, six times Olympian, twice

:02:27.:02:31.

a winner here and always a crowd favourite. The veteran has two world

:02:32.:02:35.

equestrian gold medals to her name and would love to add another this

:02:36.:02:41.

Sumner Normandy. The winner of Badminton and Burley in

:02:42.:02:47.

this Yorkshire man is tough, uncompromising. This year he is on

:02:48.:02:56.

Armada and one to work out for. And well World Championship team places

:02:57.:02:59.

up for grabs, the competition promises to be fierce and exciting.

:03:00.:03:06.

I'm hoping if I try really hard I may yet catch the selector's eye.

:03:07.:03:12.

Funds are being raised for Team GB to help improve performance. Despite

:03:13.:03:17.

William Fox Pi it, t being number one in the world since the first

:03:18.:03:22.

time since 1993, at last year's European Championships, the team

:03:23.:03:25.

came away without a medal. What went wrong. It wasn't just our weekend.

:03:26.:03:36.

In that sport, I think we have had a 15 or 16 year run of getting a team

:03:37.:03:40.

medal. It was going to be broken sooner or later. Unfortunately it

:03:41.:03:45.

happened last year. Very disappointing for Great Britain but

:03:46.:03:50.

we had had a long success of gold medals at Europeans and it wasn't

:03:51.:03:53.

going to last forever so, hopefully a little blip and I'm sure we will

:03:54.:03:58.

be back on top, soon. The Europeans weren't a great result for us. With

:03:59.:04:03.

anything, it is that fine line. You know, just one unlucky performance.

:04:04.:04:07.

There is no need to be doom and gloom. There are good ones coming

:04:08.:04:11.

through and there is a lot of strong competition, but the British team

:04:12.:04:14.

are getting stronger all the time. So what are the qualities at the

:04:15.:04:20.

forefront of selectors' minds as the World Championships in Normandy draw

:04:21.:04:24.

near? The number one priority is that we get a team that would

:04:25.:04:28.

possible give us Olympic qualification. Secondly, we want to

:04:29.:04:33.

select a team to do that plus win us as many medals as possible. These

:04:34.:04:37.

recent medals have been won by an elite group of talented individuals.

:04:38.:04:41.

I think, through time, it has been proven that with anything, whether

:04:42.:04:46.

it is football, rugby or a three-day event team, you get certain

:04:47.:04:49.

superstars, world class athletes that will be the backbone of a team

:04:50.:04:53.

for a certain number of years and lately we have had William Fox Pi

:04:54.:05:00.

it, it, Tina Cook, and Mary King. Following his success in Kentucky

:05:01.:05:05.

William Fox Pi it, it claimed the number one spot -- William Fox Pitt.

:05:06.:05:15.

It is great to be in this era with Geoff and Scarlet. It is a real

:05:16.:05:20.

honour for me. I shall be hoping to stay here after that weekend and

:05:21.:05:23.

going into the World Championships with, you know, riders in reach

:05:24.:05:28.

discipline n that position has to be a boost. With the world equestrian

:05:29.:05:31.

games looming, who else might be in the running? 2009 Badminton

:05:32.:05:39.

champion, Oliver Townend has been #24r before and seen how it works.

:05:40.:05:44.

-- has been there before. I tried to please the selectors and not make

:05:45.:05:48.

the right decisions for myself. Now I concentrate on my own performance

:05:49.:05:52.

as much as possible. If it is good enough, hopefully the phone will

:05:53.:05:57.

win. There are a number of young riders, Whittington, Danny Evans,

:05:58.:06:05.

Harry Meade and to mention a few, Izzy Taylor, that will hopefully

:06:06.:06:08.

come up with good results. Izzy Taylor made her debut on the GB

:06:09.:06:14.

squad last year. A hard-worked opportunity for the mother of two

:06:15.:06:17.

who loves this sport From being a little girl it is what I loved and I

:06:18.:06:22.

have got to live that dream. Not many can say that. There are very

:06:23.:06:26.

good riders out there that will go for it. They can be hard to beat. It

:06:27.:06:29.

is going to be out with the old and in with the new. There are plenty of

:06:30.:06:34.

British riders hoping to cement their place that that team for the

:06:35.:06:40.

World Equestrian Games but their eyes are focussed on these. The

:06:41.:06:44.

fences have always been beasts. It is an event steeped in tradition. If

:06:45.:06:48.

you win the title you know you are one of the world's greats. Hue

:06:49.:06:57.

Thomas, who for 25 years, was the court designer and director has

:06:58.:07:18.

handed over the course to a new man Giuseppe.

:07:19.:07:23.

What is your feeling of your first Badminton? Well, I wanted to respect

:07:24.:07:39.

this you place. It is - I wanted to respect it. You know you are at

:07:40.:07:46.

Badminton. Talk me through The Lake and what you have done We have come

:07:47.:07:50.

to a fence quite far from the Lake but it will be a big drop coming

:07:51.:07:54.

number of the controls to the boat will need to be accurate and again

:07:55.:07:58.

to the jetties. A gentle, curved line. This is the length that

:07:59.:08:02.

everybody knows. But you have also introduced a new water jump.

:08:03.:08:09.

A friendlier water fence than we have seen at maces at Badminton. Big

:08:10.:08:15.

set of rails. Into the water then the course of the rail on the way in

:08:16.:08:20.

or out The water gets deep very quick. This is an area of the park

:08:21.:08:24.

that hasn't been used before. This is totally new. The course never

:08:25.:08:27.

came up leer. I wanted to see if there was a possibility to change a

:08:28.:08:32.

bit and to come on this hill. I walked up here, so it is a nice

:08:33.:08:37.

shot. Different of the house. There was also a bit of water, so we

:08:38.:08:42.

decided to come here and do the change. This is a a natural pond and

:08:43.:08:47.

you have used silver birch and made itary so the horses can see what

:08:48.:08:51.

they are doing. I think silver birch is a lovely material, it is natural

:08:52.:08:56.

and under shade it can work where the horses can focus on in it. The

:08:57.:09:01.

riders like this fence. We'll go to one now that they think is scary.

:09:02.:09:06.

Very daunting and will take a lot of riding. It is terrifying. I woke up

:09:07.:09:11.

to 50m away and thought - that's the closest I need to get to it. Crikey.

:09:12.:09:15.

When I'm riding it, it hopefully won't look as big. Big and ugly. You

:09:16.:09:21.

have to stay on your line. Half way around the course. The old favourite

:09:22.:09:28.

the Vicarage Vee. Why does this get in riders' heads? If you soo he it

:09:29.:09:33.

from here, it is a normal fence. It is an upright. The problem is when

:09:34.:09:37.

you go closer to it and the ditch opens up and the riders at this

:09:38.:09:41.

point keep looking down. The more you look at t the bigger it becomes.

:09:42.:09:46.

If you actually can keep the line, a correct line and look at the three

:09:47.:09:50.

down there, the horse also just flight. Just remember that you have

:09:51.:09:54.

another fence after. It is not all over here. You have put an element B

:09:55.:10:00.

in. Yes. You are a mean man. Well... The key to the Vicarage Vee, is

:10:01.:10:08.

don't look down. What on earth is happening? I

:10:09.:10:14.

thought it was unridable. A real accuracy test. Not pretty. Asking a

:10:15.:10:18.

real question of everybody. You have to sit on your backside and work.

:10:19.:10:24.

Well, this is fence 18. Would it be fair to say this is the trickiest

:10:25.:10:28.

combination on the course? Will this cause problems? I don't know if it

:10:29.:10:31.

is the most difficult one but it is surely different. There is no

:10:32.:10:34.

pattern here. You must ride what you have, what you feel and actually

:10:35.:10:38.

this fallen tree here I think fits well. It is nice here in the

:10:39.:10:42.

surroundings and then you go down and you have a right turn and then a

:10:43.:10:46.

left turn and then back into the gallop. So it is an S shape. You

:10:47.:10:51.

have used the undulations. Riders need maximum control. Overall it is

:10:52.:10:58.

a beautiful course. It is a proper four-star test It is. The best of

:10:59.:11:07.

luck to the riders and horses. You won title three times. What do

:11:08.:11:11.

you make of the course? There is a lot to like. Giuseppe has done

:11:12.:11:19.

everything he could with the course. A lot of the open fence, rather than

:11:20.:11:23.

big boxes, I think it is all very positive. He has fences like the

:11:24.:11:28.

Vicarage Ditch which is a serious fence. It is almost five-star. Real,

:11:29.:11:32.

old Badminton. I love T there are one or two places for me -- I love

:11:33.:11:38.

it. For me, I hope it is his first year and he might make it tougher

:11:39.:11:42.

next year. There is lots to judgment of we are here in the Quarry. --

:11:43.:11:46.

there is lots to jump. There is a wall here. It was the

:11:47.:11:53.

Quarry but no signs of any stones. He has used the material for the

:11:54.:11:57.

fences. Instead of log after log, we have silver birch rails and a new

:11:58.:12:01.

wall. I think it is all very positive. The riders like it a lot.

:12:02.:12:06.

That's good and positive. We have a very international feel. For some of

:12:07.:12:12.

them they will have an eye on the World Equestrian Games. How

:12:13.:12:16.

significant is this as a test event? Can you think of that? You can and

:12:17.:12:21.

some countries do. But, I know for the likes of the Brits, they have

:12:22.:12:25.

some really good young horses coming through and they wouldn't

:12:26.:12:28.

necessarily want to bring their horses - the exciting horses here

:12:29.:12:33.

and give a big challenge and then go on to the Royal Championships later

:12:34.:12:37.

on in the year and ask for another big challenge. I would imagine the

:12:38.:12:42.

British selectors this year are probably looking at some of the

:12:43.:12:47.

three-star courses and looking for horses on their way up their careers

:12:48.:12:53.

inane up the levels. Last year, for example at the European

:12:54.:12:57.

Championships as a team we didn't do very well but Malmo was renowned for

:12:58.:13:02.

not having particularly good footing and I know riders are having

:13:03.:13:09.

concerns about taking their stars of the future and risking them on that

:13:10.:13:14.

sort of ground. We could have a pretty good team this year. The most

:13:15.:13:22.

noticeable omission here was this rider, whose horse tested positive

:13:23.:13:31.

for a banned substance. He is still awaiting results. Does this sport

:13:32.:13:37.

have a problem with doping? Or in your spn it clean? I don't think

:13:38.:13:41.

there is a serious problem. I think it is cleevenlt I don't think there

:13:42.:13:46.

is intent with what happened to Jock and he along with Kevin McNab, the

:13:47.:13:52.

Australian tested for the same substance they are saying they think

:13:53.:13:55.

there has been contamination. I know from past experience, I have had a

:13:56.:13:59.

problem with horse food being contaminated coming across from the

:14:00.:14:03.

continent opted boats. So, I don't really think there is a big issue

:14:04.:14:06.

there. I think what is toughest for Jock and Kevin, is this is their

:14:07.:14:11.

careers what we are playing with and the FEI are being slow about sorting

:14:12.:14:14.

this out. It is September and they will not have a hearing until un.

:14:15.:14:18.

They can't do anything until after that hearing. Whether they will be

:14:19.:14:22.

able to compete after that remains to be seen. Let them get on with it.

:14:23.:14:26.

Rightly or wrongly, it is taking too long. Exactly. Let's get on with the

:14:27.:14:32.

Badminton horse trials and see who faired best in the dressage.

:14:33.:14:45.

Setting the pace, Clark Montgomerie of the USA. What it is like? It is

:14:46.:14:55.

nerve-racking for the rest of the weekend. Instead of starting at the

:14:56.:15:01.

front rather than chasing everybody. 33.3 penalty points. In second

:15:02.:15:06.

place, the 2010 champion, Paul Tapner.

:15:07.:15:09.

The actual test was fantastic it is nice when you get a score to match

:15:10.:15:17.

the score you think you've done. It feels you with confidence going into

:15:18.:15:23.

the cross-country? I don't know. Dressage is a bit girly. You have to

:15:24.:15:28.

be precise. Cross-country is more my stuff. Aussie male stuff, come on!

:15:29.:15:34.

Totally ready for it. He'll be rathering to go on the grey,

:15:35.:15:45.

Kilronan. Best-placed Brit, Francis Whittington. We've had a fantastic

:15:46.:15:50.

test this week. I am thrilled with how he worked. . Went in very

:15:51.:15:58.

nicely. I have a point to prove to myself

:15:59.:16:02.

that I can follow through. I can finish off what I started. Let 's

:16:03.:16:07.

have a look at the full leaderboard. The feeling among the riders is that

:16:08.:16:26.

the dressage will not be as influential this year. That

:16:27.:16:30.

leaderboard could change, because the cross-country course is tough

:16:31.:16:36.

and conditions are difficult. Heavy overnight rain, showers now. A

:16:37.:16:39.

couple of changes to the course because of the weather and because

:16:40.:16:43.

of this new mound, they have taken out the log at the bottom. Instead

:16:44.:16:48.

of an S-bend it is easier and they jump the leg out at the end. The

:16:49.:16:52.

other change at the quarry is fence 26, the wall that came up the hill,

:16:53.:16:55.

that has gone. It is a shorter course. It is a quicker time. We

:16:56.:16:59.

will see what effect that has with our commentary team.

:17:00.:17:09.

81 starters on cross-country day. The young lady to get us under way,

:17:10.:17:18.

30-year-old Izzy Taylor. She's been here before. She's one

:17:19.:17:22.

that is very much tipped for the top. This is the year that really

:17:23.:17:29.

this lady could put her name up in lights. 11.21 seconds, the time.

:17:30.:17:42.

Over 6, 500 metres. Three jumping efforts for those two taken out.

:17:43.:17:47.

Two fairly straightforward fences to get them under way. A big dip at

:17:48.:17:53.

Two fairly straightforward fences to Keepers Brush. The first of the

:17:54.:17:58.

steady climbs. Here we see the fence at five - the real test of

:17:59.:18:01.

combination and accuracy, the feature here. Yes, I think that is

:18:02.:18:05.

right. Interestingly enough, we think of the first few fences of

:18:06.:18:09.

being a let-up. The ground is up and down, so the horses never, apart

:18:10.:18:11.

from the first fence, down, so the horses never, apart

:18:12.:18:16.

get into their rhythm. Here it is steep downhill. These fences are

:18:17.:18:20.

incredibly narrow. Only a metre between the flags.

:18:21.:18:26.

incredibly narrow. Only a metre Now, a little gallop uphill. The

:18:27.:18:32.

famous avenue, looking down to that wonderful backdrop of Badminton

:18:33.:18:38.

House. Izzy, who made her first appearance in the Europeans last

:18:39.:18:39.

year - it was a disappointment appearance in the Europeans last

:18:40.:18:44.

her, but a very good rider to start this course off. A lot of

:18:45.:18:47.

anticipation with this big chal lepging test ahead and immediately

:18:48.:18:52.

she looks in very positive mode here. Yes, it is great. She went

:18:53.:19:00.

wide over these two big oxers. It was a good start for Izzy. Here u

:19:01.:19:06.

we are looking at the -- here we are looking at the various ways, the

:19:07.:19:10.

blue is the alternative. It is a mighty long way. I very much suspect

:19:11.:19:16.

that she will go straight, as I suspect most might, unless they get

:19:17.:19:20.

into trouble. Big crowds are waiting for action at The Lake. For 65 years

:19:21.:19:25.

now this has been one of the great features of Badminton. Here

:19:26.:19:29.

now this has been one of the great the first - Izzy Taylor.

:19:30.:19:37.

That was fantastic. That would give all the other competitors in the

:19:38.:19:44.

start box a great boost to see how well that lake was riding. There are

:19:45.:19:49.

seven previous winners. Here is one of them. The lady who has won three

:19:50.:19:52.

times and the only one to of them. The lady who has won three

:19:53.:19:58.

Rolex Grand Slam. That is the big three biggies. She did this in 2003.

:19:59.:20:05.

This is a new one from the Billy Stud. Her and her husband drive,

:20:06.:20:12.

Billy Beware, first time at Badminton. Back to the fences at the

:20:13.:20:17.

hollow. A Brush Oxer - two versions, which

:20:18.:20:23.

are wide. A rather in inconvenient little rise to it.

:20:24.:20:37.

A great cross-country girl, this one.

:20:38.:20:42.

Here is the undulation before the oxer.

:20:43.:20:51.

Billy Beware and Pippa Funnell. Pippa came back into the world's

:20:52.:21:01.

elite qu her performance in -- with her performance in Kentucky. This

:21:02.:21:06.

horse is very inexperienced at this level. She's had to work hard. A

:21:07.:21:11.

big, striding horse, but good work from both of them.

:21:12.:21:18.

And Izzy coming down to this fence - it put the frighteners into the

:21:19.:21:26.

riders. Rattled the top of that, but no problem. Then that tight turn

:21:27.:21:31.

back to the second element. Gets the stick out to say, come on

:21:32.:21:37.

Matilda. No problems so far. Very quickly they come to the Mirage

:21:38.:21:48.

Pond. Brilliant! What a start. She's having a great ride.

:21:49.:21:55.

Well, 15 nations here. It is a really big international occasion

:21:56.:22:01.

here now. Andrew Nicholson is away. Quimbo.

:22:02.:22:08.

When it is wet, it does not really worry me. This time, Quimbo, he

:22:09.:22:14.

would not have a lot of thorough bred in him. So it will make it hard

:22:15.:22:20.

work for him if the ground is a little bit more tiring.

:22:21.:22:27.

So, here is Andrew Nicholson. Here at the escalator. A classic

:22:28.:22:34.

Nicholson. This horse was so impressive when he won in Kentucky

:22:35.:22:39.

last year. He has shown a lot of form since. Izzy coming to this

:22:40.:22:50.

jump. He trips, stumbled, slipped. He did something on the landing

:22:51.:22:54.

there. It didn't quite work. She ended up on three-and-a-half

:22:55.:22:57.

strides. An enormous corner. There was no way the horse could negotiate

:22:58.:23:03.

that. She now has to regroup and take the longer way. You can see how

:23:04.:23:10.

big and wide these corners are. A big combination of fences.

:23:11.:23:16.

Two-thirds of the way around. Here is Billy Beware and Pippa Funnell,

:23:17.:23:21.

really making use of this galloping stretch of fences and here comes the

:23:22.:23:26.

Vee. A horse that could eat that fence and does. Turns pretty and

:23:27.:23:33.

puts in a nice step. Big-striding horse. He was so neat there. Pippa

:23:34.:23:39.

rode a brilliant line. Here is Izzy Taylor coming home on her first two

:23:40.:23:43.

rides A great performance for the rest of the 80 horses still to come

:23:44.:23:47.

because they have seen this young lady make this course look very

:23:48.:23:54.

jumpable. She comes home. The horse with her ears pricked. She will get

time faults. Each one for those 35 seconds over. Moving on to 95.8 -

:24:01.:24:06.

the first one home. Well, it is quite breezy. It is

:24:07.:24:15.

quite damp. We see Pippa go through The Lake.

:24:16.:24:21.

She hits that very hard and gets away wit. -- with it. She did

:24:22.:24:26.

nothing wrong. I am thrilled with her. Just annoying with. That but

:24:27.:24:31.

you know, she jump ped the rest of the -- jumped the rest of the

:24:32.:24:35.

course. We all walked it, as we all said. So very pleased with her.

:24:36.:24:39.

course. We all walked it, as we all annoying. Good analysis from Izzy.

:24:40.:24:43.

It is just what the of riders think. This man loves this situation. On to

:24:44.:24:48.

the... Oh and he didn't seem to go on with as much positive riding as

:24:49.:24:53.

we would expect from Nicholson! It is interesting, as he was coming

:24:54.:24:57.

down the hill, he looked as if he was getting slower and shorter in

:24:58.:25:02.

the can'ter. I expected him to be -- canter and I expected him to get on

:25:03.:25:08.

to that and the horse was looking to the right. Unusual for Mr Nicholson,

:25:09.:25:12.

I have to say. And this is a brilliant horse. So I am surprised

:25:13.:25:15.

there. Is that producing some results that

:25:16.:25:20.

are surprising us? Is that where it is going? Again, just not the best

:25:21.:25:25.

of shots to it. The horse just ducks out. It didn't lock on, as you say.

:25:26.:25:30.

So, that is 20 penalties on the board. The next Kiwi stands up. A

:25:31.:25:43.

four-time winner. Both horses have good lead-up form. It is a very big

:25:44.:25:47.

course this year. There's lots of questions.

:25:48.:25:51.

I am pretty sure that they are able to answer them. I hope I give them a

:25:52.:25:55.

good ride and we have a good time out there.

:25:56.:26:06.

Away goes Mark Todd. He's got two rides. He's a lot of people's tip

:26:07.:26:12.

for the title that year, particularly on the second horse,

:26:13.:26:24.

which will come much later on during the day.

:26:25.:26:29.

He is at the age of 50-plus and he is very keen to win these

:26:30.:26:35.

competitions. And William Fox-Pitt took after over from him after

:26:36.:26:41.

Kentucky. A huge amount of scope. That didn't seem to concern the

:26:42.:26:51.

horse there. That was Nicholson at his best. He gave the horse a

:26:52.:26:56.

beautifully confident ride through there. The riders not too happy

:26:57.:27:02.

about that Mirage Pond. There is Andrew Nicholson coming

:27:03.:27:04.

about that Mirage Pond. There is retired. He did of course have

:27:05.:27:18.

about that Mirage Pond. There is refusal at the Overlander Bank.

:27:19.:27:24.

about that Mirage Pond. There is You will not see it ridden any

:27:25.:27:28.

better than that all day, I wouldn't think. So Mark Toddoat. He's been

:27:29.:27:36.

such -- Sir Mark Todd. He's been such a great ambassador for the

:27:37.:27:41.

sport. Here is a double Olympic champion -

:27:42.:27:50.

coming to the Silver Birch oxers. Six and seven.

:27:51.:27:56.

That's why riders should emulate Mark Todd. The balance, the

:27:57.:28:01.

smoothness, the ease in which he Mark Todd. The balance, the

:28:02.:28:06.

jumped those fences. Amazingly, 58 years old and riding as well as

:28:07.:28:12.

ever, as is this lady Pippa Funnell. Billy Beware, coming home to the

:28:13.:28:17.

Rolex Rolex Presentation Boxes. It is a tricky angle. This 10-year-old

:28:18.:28:21.

is looking good. This is is a tricky angle. This 10-year-old

:28:22.:28:26.

prospect for the future. As she comes into the ring, she is probably

:28:27.:28:31.

going to be 50-seconds over. She will be happy with this horse.

:28:32.:28:37.

One of the two horses redesigned, will be her second ride near the end

:28:38.:28:42.

of the day. Looking comfortable, she hasn't pushed this horse too hard,

:28:43.:28:46.

which is important. It gives him confidence for the future. There we

:28:47.:28:50.

are, just over one minute over. 66.3. The current

:28:51.:28:53.

are, just over one minute over. sure she will not be at

:28:54.:28:55.

are, just over one minute over. the day but that is a very exciting

:28:56.:29:00.

performance for Funnell and Billy Beware. And of Tim Price now and

:29:01.:29:09.

performance for Funnell and Billy Ringwood Sky Boy. Five strides on

:29:10.:29:13.

the turn. A bit of arguing there. Rattled the

:29:14.:29:18.

second gate. The riders are concerned about these gates. There's

:29:19.:29:21.

no ground there. Lying vertical. They have to slow down to jump them.

:29:22.:29:27.

Then, as they come into the other end of The Lake, sort of

:29:28.:29:31.

insignificant-looking fence. The water is very deep. We saw Pippa

:29:32.:29:35.

Funnell earlier have a struggle there. And Mark Todd had a peck

:29:36.:29:38.

after that big fence. Here is a another big star, sitting

:29:39.:29:53.

on his backside! Can you believe that?

:29:54.:30:02.

That is a reality check for Mark. And falling, it means he is

:30:03.:30:10.

eliminated. That's the situation. Let's look at it again. Well, the

:30:11.:30:12.

horse seemed to peck on the landing. It is a big fence this Bull Finch.

:30:13.:30:21.

It just trips. Has at bit of a stumble. I have to say, I'm not sure

:30:22.:30:25.

that Mark wasn't riding a little backwards. He got a bit slow here.

:30:26.:30:31.

He thought about the big stride, changes his mind and then the horse

:30:32.:30:39.

says - I can't do that, sorry, dad. Huge smiles from Pippa Funnell, you

:30:40.:30:43.

are really chuffed with that? Really, really, really chuffed. I

:30:44.:30:49.

have been so worried. You know with everyone saying - it has only done

:30:50.:30:54.

one three-star, are you being sensible bringing a such a young

:30:55.:30:57.

horse here. You don't know how they are going to be until you get here

:30:58.:31:00.

and even though the time obviously was slow but from the future point

:31:01.:31:06.

of view, I'm really excited. COMMENTATOR: A lovely shot. Now Tim

:31:07.:31:15.

Pric. . Been here a number of years. He married his long-time girlfriend

:31:16.:31:21.

last winter. He has two very good rides. Tim Price with Ringwood

:31:22.:31:27.

Mississippi. He is clear and kept a lovely rhythm. -- Ringwood Sky Boy.

:31:28.:31:31.

That's the change of route with the second wall being taken out in the

:31:32.:31:35.

Quarry, as you can see, still looking a little damp. As Francis

:31:36.:31:45.

Whittington, comes to the escalator. Easy Target. Great dressage. A good,

:31:46.:31:50.

confident start for this talented Horsman. Hasn't had the best of luck

:31:51.:31:53.

here in the past. Could this be his year?

:31:54.:32:04.

Tim Price, a sharp angle. You can see the jump judge carrying the

:32:05.:32:10.

flag. He jumped the second element without the flag. He won't get

:32:11.:32:13.

penalised but it makes the fence more difficult to assess for the

:32:14.:32:18.

horse to approach. Well, it is a pretty good time, I have to say.

:32:19.:32:21.

That's certainly the quickest so far, without a doubt. Interesting

:32:22.:32:28.

that 2011 was the last time we went around this way and we did see, in

:32:29.:32:33.

that year, horses getting tired. You might remember Land Vision and Mark

:32:34.:32:37.

Todd come home that year. It will be interesting to see, as the day

:32:38.:32:41.

unfolds with this going, whether the same might happen but here is the

:32:42.:32:46.

23-year-old, Ludwig Svennerstal, from Sweden.

:32:47.:32:56.

He works near Swindon. He goes down the left route. One of the early

:32:57.:33:03.

ones to do that. Most have gone down the right so far.

:33:04.:33:16.

The big grey here, and the owner has tremendous horses. The horse jumps

:33:17.:33:25.

close to the red flag over the first one and gets a good line through.

:33:26.:33:27.

close to the red flag over the first That was pretty neat. Covered every

:33:28.:33:33.

inch of ground there. After a great test, he wants to come up

:33:34.:33:36.

inch of ground there. After a great good result. Should be full of

:33:37.:33:38.

confidence the way this horse has started. Ludwig Svennerstal was in

:33:39.:33:43.

confidence the way this horse has that bronze medal team for Sweden in

:33:44.:33:46.

the Europeans. Oh, my word, he left a leg. And he had sat so tight. A

:33:47.:33:52.

great recovery. He has very long legs, this man, but he recovered. He

:33:53.:33:59.

clamped on and it saved him there. You can just see a re-. Are you it

:34:00.:34:05.

is interesting. They accelerated up to the log and without the fence in

:34:06.:34:09.

the middle, he didn't have to go in quite so balanced. Then a big slip

:34:10.:34:14.

in the bottom. Perhaps they were right in taking that fence out,

:34:15.:34:17.

because that horse is certainly slipping there. Now Jody Amos on

:34:18.:34:23.

Matt. The first time they had a lot of bad luck. They tried several

:34:24.:34:28.

times but their first time there. Oh, my word. Too close to the last

:34:29.:34:32.

element and you can see that rail, in that brush. Good too slow and

:34:33.:34:37.

shipped Jody Amos on to the deck. Watch it again. Well, she's

:34:38.:34:43.

accelerating. The horse says -- I cannot go on that one, I have to pin

:34:44.:34:46.

another one in and hit the rail in the middle of that. There is a fair

:34:47.:34:50.

old bang on the ground she got there. Quite often the riders -

:34:51.:35:01.

well, they have air vests on and sometimes when they go off they get

:35:02.:35:04.

winded and sometimes they lie longer because they can't breathe for a

:35:05.:35:06.

second or two. Ludwig Svennerstal here looking for

:35:07.:35:17.

his first completion. Well-ridden to the first gate and second. Looks

:35:18.:35:21.

back, I don't know why, it is not show jumping. It shouldn't fall

:35:22.:35:26.

down. Now we see the man from the

:35:27.:35:32.

Netherlands. Andrew Heffernan. Based up in Cheshire with this lovely

:35:33.:35:41.

horse. 51.8 in the dressage. He wouldn't be the most stylish but he

:35:42.:35:44.

has certainly helped the Dutch team of late. Ridden in both the

:35:45.:35:49.

Europeans and the Olympic Games, Andrew. Coming down to this Vicarage

:35:50.:36:02.

Ve. This horse has looked impressive. From a long way out, you

:36:03.:36:08.

could see him accelerating. Will he make the turn? Very neat. And wasted

:36:09.:36:14.

not a second. This horse has always promised a lot. Easy Targeted. He

:36:15.:36:24.

may just be delivering. Andrew Heffernan. He loves teaching. He

:36:25.:36:28.

does a lot of good work in the pony club up in Cheshire. He really

:36:29.:36:32.

enjoys his sport, too. A very determined competitive rider. Oh,

:36:33.:36:37.

look at that, elbows going. It is not necessarily the style but it is

:36:38.:36:41.

the determination and where you put the horse and those are the two key

:36:42.:36:47.

facts here, coming down to the big bank. It has caused more problems

:36:48.:36:51.

than you would have expected so far. It jumped so well last year, first I

:36:52.:36:56.

am the hole was there. That's great. Very determined riding there. He is

:36:57.:37:00.

certainly proactive as a rider, isn't he? He is asking everything of

:37:01.:37:03.

the horse. You can see through this dip, he is a long way off. The horse

:37:04.:37:07.

tries, he can not make the spread, but he runs over the top of it. But

:37:08.:37:12.

doesn't waste time. They are back in the rhythm quickly. Here comes

:37:13.:37:15.

Ludwig Svennerstal. You will hear a lot more of this young man. He rode

:37:16.:37:21.

a horse in the Olympic Games that impressed many. He now finishes for

:37:22.:37:26.

a horse in the Olympic Games that the very first time for Sweden,

:37:27.:37:28.

Ludwig Svennerstal and Alexander. Coming up next in the

:37:29.:37:43.

Harry Meade, he is 30. His father won three Olympic golds and

:37:44.:37:49.

Badminton twice. You can see he has his elbows bandaged up. There is a

:37:50.:37:52.

good reason. It is a miracle he is here at all. I spoke to him

:37:53.:37:57.

yesterday to hear his story. What happened? I had a ro tagsal fall

:37:58.:38:03.

last August. I landed, basically being shot like a vaf Lin and landed

:38:04.:38:08.

my arms straight. They snapped into the elbows and dislocated and

:38:09.:38:14.

shattered. -- like a javelin. Was there a point that you thought you

:38:15.:38:18.

would never able to ride? Yes, they were worried about my arms. They

:38:19.:38:22.

were shattered into so many places, they weren't sure with even with

:38:23.:38:26.

pinning, whether they would be able to put them back suitably to carry

:38:27.:38:32.

on riding. The first we thought we were healing OK and the bones were

:38:33.:38:37.

showing no signs of joining up. At one point near Christmas, I thought

:38:38.:38:41.

I wouldn't sit on a horse again. It is extraordinary you are here. It is

:38:42.:38:46.

also slightly bonkers. I mean, look at this... Well, I worked out the

:38:47.:38:51.

last sort of - I think this is my ninth time at Badminton. I looked at

:38:52.:38:55.

the fitness programme for the horses on all the previous years I have

:38:56.:39:00.

come. I tried to leave it to the last-possible moment. I day I

:39:01.:39:03.

reckoned I could physically get on the horse and come to Badminton was

:39:04.:39:07.

the first day I started riding again. I talked to very few people

:39:08.:39:11.

about the fact I wanted to talk to Badminton. The one I did I think

:39:12.:39:16.

thought I was going through a grieving process, to try and see it

:39:17.:39:21.

wouldn't work. But it is mazing, I'm thrilled we have managed to get

:39:22.:39:24.

here. In the midst of all of this, your wife game birth to your first

:39:25.:39:28.

child Slightly unexpectedly. It happened very fast and I called the

:39:29.:39:33.

midwife who said - call an ambulance. The ambulance said they

:39:34.:39:34.

were not going to get here ambulance. The ambulance said they

:39:35.:39:39.

I ended up delivering him on the bathroom floor on my own. I should

:39:40.:39:43.

point out no longer with your arms in plaster but you are Superman.

:39:44.:39:45.

Let's see how he gets on. COMMENTATOR: The sport is very proud

:39:46.:39:58.

of this young man. He has worked very hard for this moment. He is

:39:59.:40:06.

very much like his father who has won pick golds. Away goes Harry with

:40:07.:40:12.

Wild Lone. This is the moment he has been dreaming of. Here is easy

:40:13.:40:17.

targeted, looking a shade weary one has to say -- Easy Target. He is

:40:18.:40:24.

going through the hunts mans close. Up goes the hand. He obviously felt

:40:25.:40:29.

the horse was getting weary. Yes, as he approached the fence, you could

:40:30.:40:34.

see the horse had not a lot of petrol left in the tank. He jumped

:40:35.:40:35.

the log well but he petrol left in the tank. He jumped

:40:36.:40:40.

have the energy to turn to those two big corners, so a very wise

:40:41.:40:44.

decision, probably. And a brave decision. You get that far around

:40:45.:40:47.

and the horse is going so well. Well, here is Wild Lone and Harry

:40:48.:40:52.

Meade, top of the escalators. This is where he will want his arms, his

:40:53.:40:57.

brain, all in gear to get that line. Oh, Wild Lone does lock on, doesn't

:40:58.:41:04.

get a great shot to it but picks it up. Up he goes up the hill. He will

:41:05.:41:06.

want to put that out of up. Up he goes up the hill. He will

:41:07.:41:12.

Well, he jumps in quite well but a long way off the second one. A bit

:41:13.:41:17.

of guesswork going on there. Not a great start. He jumped over the log.

:41:18.:41:20.

I had nothing. I thought - there is no way, he doesn't deserve to be

:41:21.:41:24.

pushed now to try to jump what are the biggest corners we will ever

:41:25.:41:28.

see. I didn't have the energy - there was no point in trying to

:41:29.:41:32.

expect him to do that. Yet again after another good dressage, we end

:41:33.:41:38.

up walking home. Very unfortunate for Francis.

:41:39.:41:43.

up walking home. Very unfortunate he is based up in Cheshire and now

:41:44.:41:46.

very much riding for the Netherlands. He is going the long

:41:47.:41:51.

route. He really is using his head. One begins to think, Ian, that this

:41:52.:41:55.

course is very much about the thinking process, real iedsing what

:41:56.:41:57.

you have underneath and making the most of what you have got --

:41:58.:42:02.

realising. Well, there is no real let-up. A good bit of riding.

:42:03.:42:09.

realising. Well, there is no real Andrew's horse is weary. There is no

:42:10.:42:13.

let-up. You have to assess the horse's ability there and taking

:42:14.:42:17.

long routes is sometimes the right decision. Positive riding from

:42:18.:42:23.

Harry. Flies rhythm. We go back to Andrew Heffernan. Andrew never nan

:42:24.:42:31.

now down to the Rolex Presentation Boxes. -- Andrew Heffernan.

:42:32.:42:39.

He will get quite a few time penalties but this is great news for

:42:40.:42:44.

Netter they wouldn't be one of the leading eventing countries in the

:42:45.:42:48.

world. -- for the Netherlands. They might be in dressage. But this

:42:49.:42:54.

team are getting decent results and this is another one. Andrew

:42:55.:43:03.

Heffernan at the last. This horse not one of the youngest. He has

:43:04.:43:07.

produced one of the best results of his career with that. Clear with 56

:43:08.:43:11.

seconds over the time. Oh, a good jump over the first of

:43:12.:43:22.

the Vicarage Vee, but a peck on the landing. A good turn. And there is

:43:23.:43:27.

no sign of Harry having any problems with his elbows, which is great news

:43:28.:43:37.

for everyone. Positive, accurate, flowing and look how quickly he gets

:43:38.:43:40.

back into the rhythm away from that pond fence. 56-year-old Pascal

:43:41.:43:49.

Leroy. He was in the top 25 in 2010/11. He has been here a number

:43:50.:43:54.

of times. A beautifully through the water. A stylish jockey, Pascal

:43:55.:44:00.

Leroy. He, on a good dressage of 57.3. So he is in such the way the

:44:01.:44:07.

day is unfolding. -- 47.3. Here is Harry. Can he get back to it? A long

:44:08.:44:14.

way off but took the flag with him. Oh, it is in his tail. That will

:44:15.:44:21.

give him compression impulsion. But flying. A fairy-tale at the moment

:44:22.:44:29.

for Harry. Can he keep it up? Now Pascal will he Roy. Minute os

:44:30.:44:40.

de-Petra very experienced. -- Minos s Depetra very experienced.

:44:41.:44:51.

Now through that pond. Away he goes down now to the vik rarge vee, as

:44:52.:44:58.

Harry Meade comes to the presentation boxes. Not quite so

:44:59.:45:03.

inside home. There was not much wrong with his elbows there. Picked

:45:04.:45:07.

up the knitting and drove for home! It is a decent time, as it is

:45:08.:45:11.

unfolding. Well, he's had a brilliant ride,

:45:12.:45:16.

Harry. How impressive is this? He just told us what he has been

:45:17.:45:20.

through with his elbows. Delivering his own baby and now he's clear

:45:21.:45:27.

cross-country and Badminton. Most people thought he would not ride

:45:28.:45:30.

cross-country and Badminton. Most again. Well, that is in incredible!

:45:31.:45:32.

cross-country and Badminton. Most A real fairytale and that is what

:45:33.:45:37.

this sport is made of. A wonderful character and determination and this

:45:38.:45:43.

man full of both and a great ride. Now the Frenchman.

:45:44.:45:57.

Pascal is having a nice ride so far. Just stalled a little bit.

:45:58.:46:02.

How did it feel? Amazing. I love that horse. I have produced him

:46:03.:46:08.

since he aus a four-year-old. We know each other like the back of our

:46:09.:46:12.

hands. I know the going was holding and causing problems. I thought I

:46:13.:46:16.

would not rather sit on anything else. He is a super

:46:17.:46:17.

would not rather sit on anything expected to be here. It is

:46:18.:46:22.

wonderful! I loved every minute of that! Here is Tim Lips. His father

:46:23.:46:28.

went around the Barcelona Olympics. This was a show jumper. He has

:46:29.:46:36.

turned to eventing. He had good results in Kentucky about five years

:46:37.:46:40.

ago. A good jockey and part of this team which are making a mark in the

:46:41.:46:47.

sport. Pascal coming to the quarry. The

horses are full of running. We have seen quite a few weary horses here.

:46:52.:46:55.

Downhill, down to that upright wall. Now the

:46:56.:47:17.

was winner of course on the lovely horse I Know Nothing. This is a

:47:18.:47:24.

horse he thinks a lot of, Kilronan. He did a wonderful dressage test. He

:47:25.:47:29.

sets off. Put in He did a wonderful dressage test. He

:47:30.:47:35.

cross-country round and he'll be top of the leaderboard, I would think.

:47:36.:47:42.

He certainly set off with great determination, which is good to see

:47:43.:47:44.

after such a brilliant test.

:47:45.:47:50.

Minos De Petra, heading home. This horse is full of running. Look at

:47:51.:47:56.

him abouting accelerate accelerating. This is the most

:47:57.:48:00.

him abouting accelerate stylish round we have seen so far.

garden gates. Not as fast as the very good time of Tim Price. He was

:48:10.:48:18.

around for a 11-time faults. He has a few more, but seconds. The

:48:19.:48:24.

Frenchman goes into second place behind Tim Price. Pippa Funnell -

:48:25.:48:29.

what a round from her! She's in third. Harry Meade, oh, what can you

:48:30.:48:34.

say! He's in fourth. He was a good winner at the National

:48:35.:48:55.

Circuit. He's going up to The Lake, while we see Tim Lips now. A good

:48:56.:49:01.

bit of riding from Tim. The look on his face as he approached that bank

:49:02.:49:08.

could tell you everything. Absolutely focussed! Kilronan,

:49:09.:49:13.

The Lake. He's not hanging about.

:49:14.:49:21.

He's not hanging around and he said, in his interview, there is

:49:22.:49:29.

testosterone going on. He got rid of the gishly dressage -- girly

:49:30.:49:33.

dressage stuff. Tim Lips going the alternative

:49:34.:49:44.

route. A good piece of thinking. Analysing what horse-power he's got

:49:45.:49:49.

underneath him and then making the alterations. Perhaps that might have

:49:50.:49:53.

been his long-term goal. These are big corners so far down the course.

:49:54.:49:55.

This boy has matured, hasn't he? big corners so far down the course.

:49:56.:50:01.

sure has! This is a real worker, Paul Tapner. A lovely family. He

:50:02.:50:07.

lives close to Swindon as many riders do.

:50:08.:50:13.

He does a better job than Toddy one has to say! A pat on the neck,

:50:14.:50:19.

giving the horse some confidence and that Outlander Bank - a different

:50:20.:50:24.

story to last year. Yes, last year the fence rode quite brilliantly.

:50:25.:50:27.

This year they have a downhill approach. That was goodbye Paul. A

:50:28.:50:31.

downhill approach and then the riders are riding the bank thinking

:50:32.:50:36.

about the skinny fence after it. The ones that are attacking the bank,

:50:37.:50:40.

they get the benefit of the skinny as well. Lucinda Fredericks. A

:50:41.:50:52.

flying finish. Did well after dressage and oh, I have a feeling

:50:53.:50:56.

there's something wrong. She sits down and looked down and she's

:50:57.:51:02.

pulling up. What? Such a disappointment. Lucinda Fredericks

:51:03.:51:06.

has popped off and is going to lead the horse home. Yes, quite sore and

:51:07.:51:14.

that's very bad luck for Lucinda Fredericks.

:51:15.:51:21.

Well now Tim Lips has come home. This is a good day building for the

:51:22.:51:29.

Netherlands. A grim mace and a smile as he finishes. Two for the Dutch.

:51:30.:51:40.

So, one still to come. Two good rounds. That is an

:51:41.:51:43.

indication of sheer joy. He's gone wide. The good thing about

:51:44.:51:56.

that is you get a more narrow ditch rather than angling the ditch. A bit

:51:57.:52:01.

of time-wasting. That is the only problem there.

:52:02.:52:06.

Has this man got enough horse left to pick it up and get to it? He

:52:07.:52:12.

certainly could do. It feels like Badminton! It was so

:52:13.:52:23.

big. My horse is such a good jumper and finally it felt quite easy.

:52:24.:52:27.

Before I thought, why am I doing this? Why do I want to ride bad mip

:52:28.:52:33.

on the? When I pass the finishing line I want to go again.

:52:34.:52:42.

It is interesting hearing Tim. This a surprise - he's going to have

:52:43.:52:48.

to work. He's gone the long way. Are we seeing the 2011 situation

:52:49.:52:52.

returning, with with horses getting weary towards the end of the course?

:52:53.:52:57.

As we heard Tim Lips say, they knew it was big, it was Badminton and

:52:58.:52:59.

they were positive and they have it was big, it was Badminton and

:53:00.:53:03.

ride and this man is joining them - Paul Tapner, going for home.

:53:04.:53:09.

Oh, and a bit of aggressive riding there!

:53:10.:53:13.

He just looked as if he went a little bit wild on this stride. The

:53:14.:53:16.

horse couldn't make that. Fortunately both horse and rider up

:53:17.:53:25.

and OK. Done a great job in the dressage.

:53:26.:53:32.

Look at it again! You see him accelerating. Thought he had seen

:53:33.:53:37.

the stride and thank goodness the pins gave way on that fence, that

:53:38.:53:39.

would have been a nasty fall. pins gave way on that fence, that

:53:40.:53:45.

is both get up and of walk away safely. That is a very good example

:53:46.:53:51.

of what the pins are all about. That was absolutely a classic

:53:52.:54:06.

demonstration and sad sadly he walks home.

:54:07.:54:10.

Time is getting difficult. It is now the Rolex boxes.

:54:11.:54:19.

He's going to be, I would think, between 40-50, maybe 50-60 seconds

:54:20.:54:24.

over the time. Of course he had that very good dressage score of 48.8. In

:54:25.:54:31.

fact, even better than that in the 36 it was. Those are the penalty

:54:32.:54:39.

scores clocking up, as they add 0.4 for every second that elapses. Ears

:54:40.:54:44.

pricked. That is good enough for the lead? Yes, it is. 56.4! Paul Tapner

:54:45.:54:53.

says, "I am back! " And Coolio for Ireland with Kyle. Another one to

:54:54.:54:56.

leave a leg. I think with the middle element, if

:54:57.:55:12.

it had been there, they would have to come in shorter and pop that

:55:13.:55:16.

first log. As it is, you can see accelerates to a good stot, but the

:55:17.:55:21.

horse is not -- spot, but the horse is not quick enough in front and the

:55:22.:55:27.

two roll down that hill. Wow! Twice around the Olympics, Mark Kyle and

:55:28.:55:34.

Coolio walking home and another surprising sight on this

:55:35.:55:37.

cross-country course. You are in the lead. Have you done

:55:38.:55:45.

enough to stay there? There is a possibility somebody could go in

:55:46.:55:50.

front of me. If anybody can go faster than me, then they are a

:55:51.:55:53.

better horse on the day. I went as fast as my horse was physically

:55:54.:55:59.

capable of today. I have no qualms that. This course is causing

:56:00.:56:03.

problems. Hardly any riders getting around. Even the top ones are having

:56:04.:56:07.

problems because of the wind, because of the fences - no-one

:56:08.:56:12.

inside the time yet. Perhaps is this an opening for Tina Cook. She is

:56:13.:56:19.

riding her horse, known as Herman. When he was born they thought he was

:56:20.:56:25.

ugly and looked like Herman Monster. Well, beauty is as beauty does!

:56:26.:56:38.

So here is the home-bred of De Novo News. Just flies past that red flag!

:56:39.:56:59.

His eye was a bit to the right. That was good for Tina. Again he's

:57:00.:57:05.

hanging right there and took the red flag out. Needs to be straighter. It

:57:06.:57:10.

is a difficult one when you have a run-out so early. Do you stop and

:57:11.:57:14.

finish and go to another competition or do you persevere and see what the

:57:15.:57:21.

Here is an interested speak taor, horse's second Badminton.

Phillips. Not fit enough yet. How many months has it been? Four

:57:41.:57:44.

months. Getting there. Kind Ofstedy. I didn't want to come here with not

:57:45.:57:48.

enough runs and not being fit enough. This is the top of the

:57:49.:57:52.

sport. You need to be as fit as you possibly can. We'll wait. It is a

:57:53.:57:56.

sport in which you have a lot of examples of

:57:57.:57:57.

sport in which you have a lot of children and come back to top-level

:57:58.:58:02.

competition. You have a lot of people to turn to for advice? It is

:58:03.:58:04.

great. Many said to me, Sarah people to turn to for advice? It is

:58:05.:58:11.

both of them said they had come back too early. You know, you can ride,

:58:12.:58:15.

but you're not very effective at the beginning, so you need to give your

:58:16.:58:20.

body time. It has been a massive help having those guys around.

:58:21.:58:23.

Lovely to see you here. Thank you very much. Tina Cook with De Novo

:58:24.:58:27.

News. Now at the mounded 18.

:58:28.:58:40.

Oneholds one's breath as they jump that first log. That was beautifully

:58:41.:58:48.

done. An unlucky 20 penalties will be on her mind as we see the

:58:49.:58:53.

American - an outstanding young rider at The Lake.

:58:54.:59:03.

I have to say The Lake is riding well.

:59:04.:59:12.

Still inside the optimum time. There'll be a few time faults for

:59:13.:59:17.

Tina. I don't think she'll be that worried. This horse, only 11, in

:59:18.:59:23.

terms of mileage is young. The horse has done very little wrong. . No,

:59:24.:59:26.

terms of mileage is young. The horse think she made the right decision to

:59:27.:59:30.

continue. It with us a silly run-out. I don't think Tina will be

:59:31.:59:35.

too worried about that. Disappointed, but not too worried.

:59:36.:59:44.

Merel Blom, she's at the Outlander Bank. A good positive approach. The

:59:45.:59:49.

positive approach seems to be working. That

:59:50.:59:51.

positive approach seems to be riding. As you said earlier, they

:59:52.:59:55.

have to tackle that bank and then worry about the Skinny. The time is

:59:56.:00:00.

not great, but that is really not what it is about now. It is about

:00:01.:00:04.

getting this horse around and getting its confidence and

:00:05.:00:12.

experience under the belt. A long way home from the

:00:13.:00:15.

combination. The crowd thin in here. A long way home from the

:00:16.:00:19.

I bet your bottom dollar it will be full when we get towards the end

:00:20.:00:23.

because there is still a lot of dra many in this competition -- drama in

:00:24.:00:28.

this competition for sure. It is Paul Tapner in front. As Tina comes

:00:29.:00:30.

home - a round in the Paul Tapner in front. As Tina comes

:00:31.:00:40.

Tina and her talents in a British squad is an advantage.

:00:41.:01:07.

There is only three strides there. You have to be quick in reactions to

:01:08.:01:12.

get away with that. You can see he is a long way off that. Manages to

:01:13.:01:15.

keep going, keeps his balance but there is no way he can get back to

:01:16.:01:24.

that. The ground actually, it is hard work but it is not jarring for

:01:25.:01:27.

them. I thought - you know what, let's keep going. This is what

:01:28.:01:31.

Badminton is going to be like for now. Let's jump that Vicarage Vee

:01:32.:01:37.

and some more difficult fences. He was super. I took the pace away.

:01:38.:01:41.

Well, there was no pace, really, I just wanted to jump around. Nice to

:01:42.:01:46.

hear the positive thoughts from Tina.

:01:47.:01:51.

Australian, Sam Griffiths now at the Lake.

:01:52.:01:56.

He jumps through there. Well, he is in a good position at the moment.

:01:57.:02:00.

He jumps through there. Well, he is 46.3, close enough as this

:02:01.:02:10.

He jumps through there. Well, he is competition is unfolding. Tee

:02:11.:02:12.

He jumps through there. Well, he is Coudray coming to the last. Not a

:02:13.:02:13.

bad time considering what we have seen today. Nobody has got near that

:02:14.:02:19.

opt minute time. One to go for Tiana. A talented horse. She will be

:02:20.:02:25.

happy with that. That's a good one for America. The leaderboard now

:02:26.:02:33.

looking pretty international. Sam Griffiths now coming to the big Vee.

:02:34.:02:39.

Oh, not the best stride there. He took the flag with him but got the

:02:40.:02:43.

right side of the flag. That's the most important thing and a quick

:02:44.:02:47.

turn. So good recovery there from Sam. Merel Blom on Rumour Has It. He

:02:48.:03:07.

has had good records on this course. Oh, another one there to hang a leg

:03:08.:03:11.

but fortunately recovered quickly and a good turn. Another near-miss,

:03:12.:03:19.

though. And those feet belong to Imperial Cavalier. Ridden by the

:03:20.:03:25.

great Marying King. One of the favourites away. Mary twice winner.

:03:26.:03:31.

Seven winners. My word, Mary has set off pretty quickly. Here is

:03:32.:03:36.

Seven winners. My word, Mary has set Blom now. Rumour Has It coming into

:03:37.:03:40.

the arena and the Dutch manager here will be absolutely overjoyed with

:03:41.:03:46.

his riders. The way this competition has gone, to have three from the

:03:47.:03:48.

Netherlands home clear, has gone, to have three from the

:03:49.:03:51.

expect them to be the top of the three in the world of dressage and

:03:52.:03:55.

show jumping, but not here. Today they have given a

:03:56.:03:59.

show jumping, but not here. Today demonstration. 73.8 and they go

:04:00.:04:04.

eighth and that's three now in the top nine. .

:04:05.:04:10.

Mary on imperial Cavalier. He certainly doesn't look his 17 years

:04:11.:04:12.

young. He is pulling away. The usual style of Mary - sit back

:04:13.:04:28.

and just steer. Sam Griffiths Paulank Brockagh in huntsman close.

:04:29.:04:32.

Certainly being very influential. He just squeezes inside that flag and

:04:33.:04:40.

then jumps the last well. Well this is one of the great sights in

:04:41.:04:45.

British sport, The Lake in front of Badminton House and the huge crowd

:04:46.:04:48.

waiting for one of their favourite riders. On her way is mayory King.

:04:49.:04:53.

52 years old now. She has completed the course 21 times. This is

:04:54.:04:58.

Imperial Cavalier which she rode into fifth place at the London

:04:59.:05:02.

Olympics. Coming through The Lake. Lovely. Showing all her experience.

:05:03.:05:07.

He nods a bit there on landing. Away she goes, with huge support, to

:05:08.:05:11.

fence 10. COMMENTATOR: Big crowds all around

:05:12.:05:17.

this park, despite the weather as Sam Griffiths rides her home. And

:05:18.:05:21.

this is a quick round. Sam Griffiths, who has twice ridden for

:05:22.:05:27.

Australia in the Olympics. Has had falls on both occasions. There is no

:05:28.:05:33.

doubt of his talent. Can he persuade the selectors to give him another

:05:34.:05:38.

chance. He is through the last. Australia definitely regrouping.

:05:39.:05:45.

They won three golds on the trot and are beginning to emerge as a strong

:05:46.:05:50.

nation. Oh, hang on, Mary, hang on there,

:05:51.:05:56.

keep going. That was quite impressive. Mary

:05:57.:05:59.

looked like a youngster there, I have to say, clinging on like a

:06:00.:06:04.

monkey. I'm not sure about the monkey bit but 52-year-old Mary was

:06:05.:06:09.

very quickly thinking then to avoid a jumping penalty and I think she's

:06:10.:06:14.

got away with it. There was a quick bit of thinking there from Mary and

:06:15.:06:16.

a brilliant piece of riding. You see bit of thinking there from Mary and

:06:17.:06:22.

stride there. The horse gets up there a bit short. Chips in here

:06:23.:06:27.

stride and almost gets stuck. But watch the horse's expression. Look

:06:28.:06:33.

at him, he just says, "Sit tight, mum." 17 and the old boy is staying

:06:34.:06:40.

in the right place to keep Mary on the plate. "I have done it. What do

:06:41.:06:46.

you want next?" He does look a bit surprised the horse, doesn't he? !

:06:47.:06:50.

Lucy Jackson from New Zealand. Born in Britain. Went to New Zealand to

:06:51.:06:55.

do physiotherapy and got New Zealand nationality and they are

:06:56.:06:59.

benefitting. This tall young lady is going very well indeed. Lucy

:07:00.:07:06.

Jackson, 47.2 dressage. Mayor joy back into a good gallop now at the

:07:07.:07:13.

Vicarage ditch. Showing all her experience there. Quick turn back.

:07:14.:07:17.

Lovely. Oh, loss of balance on landing, Mary.

:07:18.:07:24.

This mirage pond has ridden well today, despite the fact that middle

:07:25.:07:28.

element is pretty serious. Well, that was not what I expected, Mike.

:07:29.:07:35.

Was that your fault? Commentator's problem? Probably. I hope she is not

:07:36.:07:41.

listening. Well, is Mary? No, hand goes up. What a disappointment. Had

:07:42.:07:46.

last year off. She was so hoping to come back and win another World

:07:47.:07:50.

Equestrian Games gold medal. That has to be a doubt now, as you see

:07:51.:07:58.

yet another star walking hope in the Mitsubishi motors Badminton 2014.

:07:59.:08:04.

New Zealand's Lucy Jackson. A nice bit of extra push there on

:08:05.:08:13.

that last stride. I had a bit of a strange jump

:08:14.:08:18.

through the owl hole but we kept it together. I think that knocked his

:08:19.:08:20.

confidence and we had together. I think that knocked his

:08:21.:08:24.

at another unbrushed together. I think that knocked his

:08:25.:08:26.

drop in the water. I thought - there is knob point going on as a horse

:08:27.:08:28.

which has been so great is knob point going on as a horse

:08:29.:08:30.

through his career. is knob point going on as a horse

:08:31.:08:35.

Well now, the individual silver medallist at London.

:08:36.:08:38.

Riding a new horse, is Sara. She medallist at London.

:08:39.:08:44.

a syndicate to buy it through Facebook, getting enough money. This

:08:45.:08:50.

horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. Now called Reality and going well.

:08:51.:08:55.

horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. Lucy Jackson coming to the

horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. riders down on this course which is

:09:03.:09:07.

what Giuseppe wanted. What he was looking for, rather than galloping

:09:08.:09:12.

at all the fences and this little logpile. It was a surprising jump.

:09:13.:09:17.

Nothing to look at but it's been pretty seriously ridden in all sorts

:09:18.:09:29.

of different ways today, Mike. Well, now this girl very experienced.

:09:30.:09:35.

She had an individual silver. Could have been gold in London, but she

:09:36.:09:42.

didn't quite make that. And Oliver Townend on the great Armada. Oh,

:09:43.:09:49.

what scope. He looked as though he was just in his school at home

:09:50.:09:56.

there, having a little play. Lugsy Jackson - smiles all over her face.

:09:57.:10:00.

That's her best performance at Badminton. A young lady on the edge

:10:01.:10:06.

of selection. She was a reserve for London but she put her name in the

:10:07.:10:11.

book for France now. Lucy Jackson moves into the top ten.

:10:12.:10:15.

She was 21st after dressage and that's the story all the way

:10:16.:10:19.

through. Tim Price has moved up from had 1st after dressage and more

:10:20.:10:24.

riders are not finishing this cross country course than finishing.

:10:25.:10:30.

Conditions really tough. So Reality now in Hunts mans Close.

:10:31.:10:39.

Thanks too 45,000 Facebook friends syndicating this horse and raising

:10:40.:10:43.

would you believe over ?75,000 to buy this horse, Reality. Going the

:10:44.:10:48.

long way. Playing safe. Still motoring on. She is right in touch.

:10:49.:10:55.

Oh, she is not now. She is the wrong side of that flag and gone down.

:10:56.:11:00.

Well, that will not even be a dispute over the Grand Jury with the

:11:01.:11:03.

flag because that fault sees her walking home. Watch it again. She is

:11:04.:11:08.

a bit to the right. You can see the horse drifting right. Definitely the

:11:09.:11:12.

wrong side of that flag as he jumps on top of t and rather than jumping

:11:13.:11:17.

off, sort of fell off. Keeps its balance but poor Sara hits the deck.

:11:18.:11:24.

Well, good to see horse and rider non-the worse at the moment. Despite

and walking away. Now seeing, horses and riders getting up

:11:31.:11:36.

Townend, Armada. Remember he won in 2009. He has been in the wilderness

:11:37.:11:44.

over the last two or three years but the man looks steely determined this

:11:45.:11:51.

afternoon. Pippa Funnell. Redesigned. The horse she finished

:11:52.:11:58.

fifth in Kentucky in 2010. Owned by the same owners as another horse on

:11:59.:12:06.

which she won here. Away she goes. A disappointing dressage. The horse

:12:07.:12:11.

was extremely tense. I'm quite surprised in many respects that she

:12:12.:12:14.

is running this horse across country. But she has realised that

:12:15.:12:19.

this is so open, that if she could get the best out of this horse - and

:12:20.:12:25.

at his best he is a really good ride across the country - she could still

:12:26.:12:30.

make up what she lost in the dressage Well we are right at the

:12:31.:12:35.

top of the course for Oliver. This is where the horses have been

:12:36.:12:38.

getting weary. He is riding strongly to get over that wall. This horse is

:12:39.:12:43.

jumping. That's what counts. 9 jumping. That's what counts. 9

:12:44.:12:48.

horse, as long as they want to get to the other side, and there is not

:12:49.:12:53.

an issue about how tired the horse is, there is no reason they

:12:54.:13:00.

shouldn't continue. Redesigned at the Lake now with Pippa. . That was

:13:01.:13:04.

brilliant in but almost the Lake now with Pippa. . That was

:13:05.:13:09.

short, the striding in there. She angled into the water, which was

:13:10.:13:14.

great to see. Very quick. Oliver Townend. The normer Andrew

:13:15.:13:19.

great to see. Very quick. Oliver ride, now over the last of the

:13:20.:13:22.

combinations. One fence left. 43 jumping efforts on this Giuseppe

:13:23.:13:30.

Della Chiesa course. It will really causing some scratching of the

:13:31.:13:35.

heads. But there is no doubt Oliver Townend has answered all the

:13:36.:13:38.

questions set. This man could be back. He won two of the three legs.

:13:39.:13:41.

He had a Burley win and couldn't make it in Kentucky. And at his

:13:42.:13:47.

best, he could be another strong candidate for Britain. Good time. He

:13:48.:13:50.

says He goes fourth.

:13:51.:14:05.

Well, Mark Todd this horse's first four-star but he thinks so much of

:14:06.:14:06.

it. You looked pumped as you came across

:14:07.:14:17.

the finish line. Well done. Yes, it is a gentlemen genuine horse. I have

:14:18.:14:23.

never feel him bottom out. I felt tired. He felt fairly unconscious

:14:24.:14:27.

coming up to the Quarry. All of a sudden, he took a big breath, picked

:14:28.:14:32.

himself up and ran home. He is just go very good.

:14:33.:14:42.

Mark Todd at the Lake. Leonidas was so impressive when he

:14:43.:14:45.

won the big competition. He is in trouble. He lost his balance in and

:14:46.:14:48.

now he is in deep trouble. He lost his balance in and

:14:49.:14:53.

And it does get deep there. It certainly does get dee. I thought

:14:54.:14:56.

Mark was going swimming for a second. And I get he thought he was,

:14:57.:15:02.

too. Now he has to re-route and go the long way. That is a difficult

:15:03.:15:08.

route to fathom out, I find. It does take a long time. He is quickly back

:15:09.:15:12.

in his rhythm but for a moment or two, the

:15:13.:15:15.

in his rhythm but for a moment or was going to disappear and submerge.

:15:16.:15:19.

Lost the reins at the last moment and got in trouble.

:15:20.:15:37.

The first one to do! Isn't that - it is very narrow, but it goes up

:15:38.:15:42.

steeply on the left. A big route comes out it is much, much bigger.

:15:43.:15:47.

You can see her turning quickly. I have to say, if that middle

:15:48.:15:53.

element had been there, they would have turned tighter than that. She

:15:54.:15:58.

did give the horse plenty of time, but it didn't work. The medical team

:15:59.:16:01.

quickly on hand. I don't think but it didn't work. The medical team

:16:02.:16:06.

any the worse - she's on her feet. She will certainly reflect on that

:16:07.:16:14.

ride. Out goes Redesigned. Here is a horse that is again looking a shade

:16:15.:16:21.

on the weary side. I think he got away with a white flag. I think he

:16:22.:16:26.

just did. I have not seen Toddy work so hard for a long time. Quite a lot

:16:27.:16:31.

for an old man! It is the second ride now Forte Taylor. Thistledown

:16:32.:16:41.

Poposki -- for Izzy Taylor. Thistledown Poposki. Barely a third

:16:42.:16:48.

:16:49.:16:53.

William Fox-Pitt has been waiting, watching for his moment. He pulled

:16:54.:17:00.

out his fishss t horse. This last section of riders includes

:17:01.:17:05.

Montgomerie and the man going last of all, the man who has never won

:17:06.:17:14.

bad Badminton. And the world's number one, William

:17:15.:17:25.

Fox-Pitt away a. He -- away. As home comes, Mark

:17:26.:17:43.

Toddoat on Leonidas II. Well over the Mark Todd.

:17:44.:17:48.

He has Leonidas II in 25th place at the moment.

:17:49.:17:53.

Izzy Taylor had a great ride on her first horse. Here she is on her

:17:54.:17:58.

second one, having an even better ride.

:17:59.:18:10.

second one, having an even better We got around and finished I was not

one of my better rides it has been an abouting

:18:18.:18:34.

Izzy Taylor coming home for the second time. I think, looking back

:18:35.:18:40.

quickly through the records. She's is the only one still to have two

:18:41.:18:42.

horses in the competition. What an horses in the competition. What an

:18:43.:18:49.

achievement! And this a first timer owned by Lady Ann Whitely. Her

:18:50.:18:54.

husband chairman of the sport for many years. A great contrib burter.

:18:55.:18:58.

This is a great -- contributor. This is a great performance. This first

:18:59.:19:04.

timer does it clear. And William at

:19:05.:19:16.

Such style! Such control. Effortless! Yes, don't want to spoil

:19:17.:19:24.

his luck, but this man looks on fire. Now Nicola Wilson. A very

:19:25.:19:33.

popular lady. You might remember the great opposition buzz. This, an

:19:34.:19:44.

exciting young horse. It is only a ten-year-old.

:19:45.:19:49.

William coming to the water combination. It has

:19:50.:19:55.

William coming to the water trouble all day. Hopefully for

:19:56.:19:55.

William it will be OK. Of great! You don't see too many coloured

:19:56.:20:07.

horses at this level. This, a horse with a lovely attitude and lovely

:20:08.:20:13.

jump too at the Escalator. A lovely, positive ride from this lady.

:20:14.:20:20.

William Fox-Pitt now approaches the gates.

:20:21.:20:25.

William Fox-Pitt now approaches the and the jockey ready for the last.

:20:26.:20:33.

30-30 counting down. It is not the quickest. Of course he has that good

:20:34.:20:41.

dressage of 41. He puts six strides behind these gates.

:20:42.:20:43.

Now we have got Nicola turning in behind these gates.

:20:44.:20:48.

She is riding for her life. And the mare is responding.

:20:49.:20:57.

She had two rides but withdraw her first horse, not having been quite

:20:58.:21:01.

right this morning. Just the one ride for Nicola, as way agoes the

:21:02.:21:08.

dressage leader. Montgomery, the man from tennis.

:21:09.:21:12.

dressage leader. Montgomery, the man He had -- Texas.

:21:13.:21:29.

He gets the extra stride in on that turn. Can he make the next one? Yes!

:21:30.:21:36.

He will be very happy with. That very few a now taking that direct

:21:37.:21:45.

route. Oh, and the pins have dropped there.

:21:46.:21:50.

If the grand jury felt that release of those pins would have stopped a

:21:51.:21:57.

fall... There is a fall. That is William Fox-Pitt. What is happening

:21:58.:22:03.

to this competition, Badminton 2014? It is a whooping fence, but that was

:22:04.:22:07.

definitely the biggest surprise of the day! There has not been any

:22:08.:22:12.

trouble there all day. They have all jumped that fence, even if they were

:22:13.:22:17.

getting weary on their legs. A great disappointment to see William and

:22:18.:22:21.

Parklane Hawk having to walk home. A huge shock because he had this lead

:22:22.:22:25.

at the end of the day. Very much written all over him - the way he

:22:26.:22:30.

had been gone - the way he had gone, rather! It looked as though he must

:22:31.:22:35.

have got a bit close. He hit the fence on the way up with his right

:22:36.:22:40.

front leg. And it just tipped him side way. Well, well, well!

:22:41.:22:46.

What else is in score. Here is the American at the lake.

:22:47.:23:03.

Clark Montgomery. Very measured through

:23:04.:23:04.

Beltane Queen - this could be a great one.

:23:05.:23:11.

This long route is not looking that safe either.

:23:12.:23:16.

She's taken the long route, but she did one of the quickest turns

:23:17.:23:20.

between those two elements. Didn't waste any time.

:23:21.:23:27.

Oh, yieks! -- yikes. What side of the flag was

:23:28.:23:31.

she? I think she was on the left. That is one for the grand jury to

:23:32.:23:35.

have a look at. And the grand jury have been very busy. Now it is Clark

:23:36.:23:39.

Montgomery, driving on for the vik rarge vee. Gets a -- Vickarage Vee.

:23:40.:23:49.

It is a tough line of fences down here. He is at the Mirage Pond. We

:23:50.:23:52.

have seen plenty of action here. The time looks good. He's about just

:23:53.:24:05.

under halfway. He's literally metres under halfway. Nicola Wilson and

:24:06.:24:13.

Beltane Queen come to the Rolex Rolex Presentation Boxes.

:24:14.:24:18.

She will be thrilled with this. Very inexperienced, two first time

:24:19.:24:22.

Badminton horses here. First one did not start cross-country, but this

:24:23.:24:26.

one has and has shown there is a lot to look forward to. Really enjoyed

:24:27.:24:28.

it, this little horse. ??FORCEWHITE It is all for an

:24:29.:24:36.

exciting cause in the future, I feel. Over the last and I think

:24:37.:24:39.

you'll see the feel. Over the last and I think

:24:40.:24:43.

Yes! There it is! She goes 11th feel. Over the last and I think

:24:44.:24:49.

the moment. Tim Price and feel. Over the last and I think

:24:50.:24:54.

The Lake. Turn, turn u turn! Oh -- turn, turn,

:24:55.:25:01.

turn! Oh, good horse. The crowd have got what they wanted, not what Tim

:25:02.:25:06.

Price would have wanted though! I think he's going to stay there. We

:25:07.:25:10.

are now to the last horse or two in what has been an amazing day of

:25:11.:25:14.

sport. As soon as he landed, he let go of

:25:15.:25:25.

the left rein. He left his back legs and fired poor Tim into the water.

:25:26.:25:30.

Oh, that is so cold! Well, that is an interesting picture

:25:31.:25:38.

because that is the gel gate who looks at -- the delegate who looks

:25:39.:25:42.

at problems for the grand jury. I think that will be about the flag.

:25:43.:25:46.

There is her husband. They will be looking at the flag in Hunt

:25:47.:25:52.

Huntsmans Close. They will be talking about the pins. It is all

:25:53.:26:00.

eyes on the last, Andrew Nicholson with Nereo. A great combination to

:26:01.:26:06.

finish the day here in the cross-country. It has been a

:26:07.:26:08.

thrilling day of cross-country riding. I don't think I have

:26:09.:26:12.

thrilling day of cross-country the score board quite like it for a

:26:13.:26:14.

long, long time. Certainly the dressage has not been that

:26:15.:26:19.

influential. Here is the dressage leader. He's in hunt huntsmans

:26:20.:26:26.

Close. He's not looking to respond that quickly and that is the result.

:26:27.:26:31.

Remember, this is what happened to his first ride. Now, why is that?

:26:32.:26:36.

Remember, this is what happened to that because the horse is not fit

:26:37.:26:39.

enough? What is the reason for that? I know this horse has had a wind

:26:40.:26:43.

operation in the past. I don't know whether that has affected it. He has

:26:44.:26:52.

a band bandage railing -- trailing as well. We talk about being flat,

:26:53.:27:00.

but there's a long climb from the Mirage Pond up to the Quarry. It has

:27:01.:27:08.

been telling on the horses today. We look again. It is easy to

:27:09.:27:10.

been telling on the horses today. We after, but this horse was not

:27:11.:27:15.

responding and instead of being positive there, he was thinking a

:27:16.:27:19.

little backwards, probably wondering whether he should be going on. And

:27:20.:27:23.

the leader is out. Is this the opportunity for this man? 33

:27:24.:27:27.

completions here at Badminton. He's been second, third, fourth and fifth

:27:28.:27:31.

on different horses, but this horse won him a bronze individualally and

:27:32.:27:37.

a team bronze in Kentucky. He was the fourth individualally in London,

:27:38.:27:42.

but won a team bronze. The dream would be a Badminton win. Will this

:27:43.:27:48.

be his year? He's looking pretty calculated about it all.

:27:49.:27:55.

The flags are going regularly. A lot of these fences are incredibly

:27:56.:27:59.

skinny. It doesn't matter. You pay no attention as a rider, so long as

:28:00.:28:03.

you are at the right side of them. This man has got better and better.

:28:04.:28:09.

Now over 50. Still improving A great team of horses. Covering the ground

:28:10.:28:14.

here - looks full of running. Turning to that New Pond, which has

:28:15.:28:20.

jumped so well. Oh, and that rail's gone! Wow! That

:28:21.:28:27.

is a surprise! And so has Andrew Nicholson! Can you believe it?

:28:28.:28:33.

I don't think I've ever seen that from Andrew to get tipped out from

:28:34.:28:38.

the side. An unseated rider, as we call it in racing. I have to say,

:28:39.:28:43.

that pin did break, but the horse hardly touched that rail. It should

:28:44.:28:47.

not have gone that easily. This is unusual, the horse leaves its front

:28:48.:28:52.

right leg and leaves Andrew no chance. Well, a day of drama right

:28:53.:28:59.

to the very end. But indeed no horse is hurt. No rider is hurt. Well, if

:29:00.:29:03.

you wonder what this massive crowd are looking at, it is the score

:29:04.:29:07.

board after the cross-country. They have seen the thrills and spills out

:29:08.:29:12.

there. Eliminated, retired, withdrawn, from 83 starters, just 35

:29:13.:29:17.

are left. And this man is in prime position.

:29:18.:29:21.

Paul Tapner, who has one fence in happened going into the final

:29:22.:29:26.

showjumping phase. In many ways it is unfamiliar.

:29:27.:29:27.

Tim Price up to second. Nicola Wilson was given 21

:29:28.:29:49.

penalties. She moves down to 25th. In fact, this morning of Nicola

:29:50.:29:56.

Wilson pulled out Beltane Queen. You have to prove your horse is well and

:29:57.:30:01.

fit before they go in for the showjumping.

:30:02.:30:08.

There were looked weary this morning. That will

:30:09.:30:16.

have an affect today. A lot of discussion about the cross country.

:30:17.:30:18.

Some saying chaos and too tough. discussion about the cross country.

:30:19.:30:22.

Others say it was like it used to be. Like the good, old days. It

:30:23.:30:26.

doesn't matter where you were in the dressage, you had the chance of

:30:27.:30:29.

winning if you could go fast and clear in cross country. I have to

:30:30.:30:32.

say there were some pictures yesterday that weren't ideal for the

:30:33.:30:36.

sport. There were 50-odd horse that is didn't finish and that's not

:30:37.:30:41.

really good statistics. . I don't think the course was too tough. It

:30:42.:30:45.

was a fair course but the cumulative effect, nearly all had a riser or a

:30:46.:30:49.

dip in front of them and it was having an effect. I wobdser if some

:30:50.:30:55.

of the horsers were not fit enough. Now Paul Tapner has a lead. He could

:30:56.:30:59.

have a fence down and win. But it is hard to hold on to that lead when

:31:00.:31:03.

you come into the show jumping? Are you suggesting something there? I

:31:04.:31:06.

was six times in the lead. Three times I won and three times I blew

:31:07.:31:09.

it big time. It is very difficult. There is a lot of pressure on the

:31:10.:31:13.

riders when they come into this phase. Paul Tapner's horse is a good

:31:14.:31:18.

jumper. He has one jump in hand but the horse looked a bit weary

:31:19.:31:23.

yesterday. There are really good horses behind him. And Pippa

:31:24.:31:31.

Funnell. The horses sometimes give much more than the other horses. I

:31:32.:31:38.

would love to see her win. Bred for show jumping with Pippa's influence

:31:39.:31:42.

from her husband. Well it is four penalty points for a

:31:43.:31:52.

fence knocked down. The time is fight. 90 seconds, a

:31:53.:31:56.

minute-and-a-half. For every second over that, you pick up one penalty

:31:57.:32:01.

point T could yet change. Let's see the action unfold: -- it

:32:02.:32:11.

30-year-old Harry Meade. The fairy story. Remember, he smashed his

:32:12.:32:18.

elbows last August. Made a wonderful recovery through grit and

:32:19.:32:20.

determination. Currently lying eighth. 67. 4. He has three fences

:32:21.:32:28.

in hand to stay in eighth place. On Wild Lone. A brill yapt round

:32:29.:32:32.

yesterday. It is a horse he thinks an awful lot of. -- a brilliant

:32:33.:32:38.

round. He has to put it together here. This course has taken its toll

:32:39.:32:45.

this morning. Very twisty which usually helps event horses. It stops

:32:46.:32:49.

them getting long and from the after the rigours of the cross country.

:32:50.:32:54.

This next fence is a flimsy vertical fence. Not a lot to look at. They

:32:55.:32:56.

then double back to the left. Then 24 this next fence, interesting

:32:57.:33:16.

enough, Harry took his horse right down into the corner. That fence

:33:17.:33:21.

goes right into the corner and into the crowd. One or two horses have

:33:22.:33:26.

been distracted by the horse and having -- by the crowd and having

:33:27.:33:31.

that down. And the final line. Just, remember, we have had no clear

:33:32.:33:35.

rounds yet. One with three time faults. Oh.

:33:36.:33:42.

Just the one down. 71.4 for Harry Meade and Wild Lone.

:33:43.:33:49.

He will stay eighth. Will 71.4 for Harry Meade and Wild Lone.

:33:50.:33:56.

higher? He was the youngest man ever to complete five Badmintons by 25.

:33:57.:34:06.

He was a little bit off that first one, the horse dropped on the back

:34:07.:34:10.

rail. But that was a brilliant round from Harry. One of the best we have

:34:11.:34:15.

seen all day. I quite agree. Harry Meade really has really come of age

:34:16.:34:22.

here. He's ridden some good rounds around here but this is the best,

:34:23.:34:23.

for sure. Well, there is no doubt that show

:34:24.:34:51.

jumping has been part of this young man's career. We made predictions in

:34:52.:34:54.

the past and they have gone out of the window here. It is Tim Lips from

:34:55.:35:02.

the Netherlands with three in the top 20 here.

:35:03.:35:08.

Netherlands and New Zealand have three through the last 20. Britain

:35:09.:35:15.

got four. This is a horse that yesterday went well indeed. 66. A 5

:35:16.:35:24.

he got. Lying in 7th. It's not been the best show jumper in the world.

:35:25.:35:29.

Tim's done a lot of show jumping through his young life. So this

:35:30.:35:33.

horse can have the odd fence He gave the triple bar a lot of

:35:34.:35:45.

height. That was one of the best rounds I have seen Tim ride, cross

:35:46.:35:50.

country, yesterday. Very mature, very professional.

:35:51.:36:01.

That goes too. That puts him below Harry Meade and Wild Lone. He has

:36:02.:36:11.

crept up a place. In 7th place, Harry goes on to ?15,000 as a prize

:36:12.:36:17.

pot. The most valuable Badminton ever. ?80,000 to the winner. !

:36:18.:36:24.

I remember back in the '80s winning it and the first prize was ?6,000. A

:36:25.:36:27.

bit of a change. Three down. And jumps the last.

:36:28.:36:33.

78.5. So he drops Three down. And jumps the last.

:36:34.:36:43.

Meade comes up. This is the most extraordinary

:36:44.:36:53.

storey. Harry Meade when you still had your arms in braces in January,

:36:54.:36:57.

did you ever imagine you would finish top 7 in Badminton? I didn't.

:36:58.:37:01.

It was just a dream that I had to come back here. This is my 9th

:37:02.:37:06.

Badminton. I thought I might not get here again. I stubbornly thought if

:37:07.:37:10.

I was going to be able it start riding again, I would focus

:37:11.:37:14.

everything towards this week but it was a distant goal. Your wife,

:37:15.:37:18.

Rosie, she deserves a lot of credit? . She has been a star. She tries to

:37:19.:37:22.

shrink from the limelight. She has . She has been a star. She tries to

:37:23.:37:28.

any of this without her, she looked after me for months. And

:37:29.:37:34.

any of this without her, she looked and two small children. A great

:37:35.:37:37.

performance. You got a warm applause from the crowd. Rightly so.

:37:38.:37:40.

performance. You got a warm applause done Thank you. Well, back inside

:37:41.:37:45.

the ring, one of the great show jumpers from around the world. Pippa

:37:46.:37:53.

Funnell. Two European titles and of course, won Championship medals on

:37:54.:37:58.

this young ten-year-old, Billy Beware, owned by Jonathan and Jane

:37:59.:38:05.

Clark by a very good horse Kenan. It is one of the best stallions in the

:38:06.:38:10.

world. He produced the Olympic champion. Billy Beware, 66.3 and he

:38:11.:38:19.

is in 6th. And there is now just a fence covering the next five riders

:38:20.:38:24.

to Pippa. It's absolutely vital now every fence down could be very

:38:25.:38:29.

costly. Or a clear could take you right up the leaderboard. He looked

:38:30.:38:38.

so impressive impressive at the three-star last year when he won

:38:39.:38:41.

this, lovely young horse. He jumped a clear round there. It is the only

:38:42.:38:46.

three-star, three day event and we heard Pippa saying that. So it is a

:38:47.:38:50.

big question this horse this week, and he certainly has risen to the

:38:51.:38:55.

challenge. One of the lovely stud horses that William and Pippa are so

:38:56.:39:02.

involved with these days. Oh, just ran a little bit long. That was just

:39:03.:39:07.

a green mistake, really. We could see yesterday, he got a little long

:39:08.:39:12.

and a little argumentative at times with Pippa. The same thing, a little

:39:13.:39:17.

bit happening here. It is just lack of experience. He has such a good

:39:18.:39:23.

jump. Still just ahead of Harry Meade but if she has another, it

:39:24.:39:25.

will be Harry who benefits. Pippa done a lot of show jumping on

:39:26.:39:38.

the young horses of the Billy Stud and it has shown. She has four time

:39:39.:39:45.

faults, though. 74. 3. She does drop below Harry Meade. Wild Lone comes

:39:46.:39:51.

up to 6th. He has jumped two places and Pippa Funnell drops down one

:39:52.:39:52.

place. A little bit running on into that

:39:53.:39:59.

fence. You can see Pippa trying say, "Steady, wait for me." But a

:40:00.:40:03.

little bit overenthusiastic. say, "Steady, wait for me." But a

:40:04.:40:11.

will be thrilled with him. What a star for the future that is. It is

:40:12.:40:13.

great to see Pippa right back star for the future that is. It is

:40:14.:40:17.

top of the tree. I couldn't agree more. Such a talented rider

:40:18.:40:21.

top of the tree. I couldn't agree still riding as well as ever.

:40:22.:40:29.

top of the tree. I couldn't agree now it is time for the next horse.

:40:30.:40:36.

top of the tree. I couldn't agree Sam Griffiths riding Paulank

:40:37.:40:42.

Brockagh. He went well yesterday to finish finish 5th place on 63.9.

:40:43.:40:50.

He's now just a little over two fences behind the lead, so very

:40:51.:41:02.

close. He's got two fences ahead of Harry Meade. Oh, I was just thinking

:41:03.:41:07.

he jumped the first three fences so well, so big and lots of air and he

:41:08.:41:12.

rattles the fourth one, but it stays up. Sam is certainly working hard

:41:13.:41:18.

trying to get everything out of this horse. So often when the horses have

:41:19.:41:31.

been cross country they can get a little bit flat. It is nice to see

:41:32.:41:39.

that the horses are actually keeping their rocks under them on some of

:41:40.:41:43.

these turns, but it is not helping all the time. In fact, if he does

:41:44.:41:47.

have another fence down, Meade will go up again, with just half a point.

:41:48.:42:03.

The time is going to be all right, I think. He has done a good job. A

:42:04.:42:14.

very good job. 67.9. Nothing to add for time. So, he stays fifth for

:42:15.:42:19.

Australia. Australia with two in the top five. Well, a fence down and

:42:20.:42:27.

time faults for pip fa funnel. You are cross with yourself but the

:42:28.:42:31.

horse is fantastic. -- Pippa Funnell. He was fantastic. That

:42:32.:42:36.

phase I rode him so badly. I think it has been a while since I have

:42:37.:42:44.

been like that. I'm ashamed of myself. For a young horse and with

:42:45.:42:48.

such little experience he has, I'm delighted with him. And bred at

:42:49.:42:52.

home. He is one of the family. Yes, he is the first. He is the first

:42:53.:43:02.

Billy around Badminton. He has answered all the questions. Really

:43:03.:43:09.

exciting. He is named Gorgeous by a dear friend of ours who passed away

:43:10.:43:14.

a couple of years ago. She said to me, "He will be a superstar", and he

:43:15.:43:23.

is. Here is a man who knows what it is to win Badminton. Oliver Townend

:43:24.:43:31.

with Armada. They dug deep yesterday. They both did. A steely

:43:32.:43:37.

performance. 62.7. In 4th place. Just 14 time faults. He is really

:43:38.:43:41.

very much in touch. He is on 42.7. He is just a little bit more than

:43:42.:43:48.

one fence behind the leader. Anything that happens now throws

:43:49.:43:54.

this 2014 title wide, wide open. Well, one away so far. Such a good

:43:55.:43:59.

jumper this horse. So brilliant cross country but he has got this

:44:00.:44:05.

enormous stride and sometimes his stride takes over and you can see

:44:06.:44:10.

when he hit that upright, he got nool a little bit hollow in position

:44:11.:44:15.

-- he got in a little bit hollow. He dropped his back legs. That's Oliver

:44:16.:44:23.

trying to contain that canter. It is fair to say, Ian, this is a horse

:44:24.:44:27.

that came out of the Andrew Nicholson yard. Andrew always had a

:44:28.:44:31.

job to jump clear rounds on this horse. He has never been easy.

:44:32.:44:39.

Ollie, too, has found him difficult. He has eight to add. He drops down

:44:40.:44:48.

below Sam Griffiths. Still a while behind, Wild Lone but one more would

:44:49.:44:55.

put Wild Lone up another for Harry Meade. The time is good and he jumps

:44:56.:45:02.

it. A good round for Ollie despite having fences down. It is not that

:45:03.:45:07.

clear. Eight. It could have been worse. He goes down to fifth. Sam

:45:08.:45:12.

Griffiths comes up to 4th. Three left to jump. One for France, one

:45:13.:45:15.

for New Zealand and one for Australia. Sam Griffiths of

:45:16.:45:22.

Australia is our leader. It is taking some jumping out there? After

:45:23.:45:26.

running so hard around the cross country yesterday, they need to be

:45:27.:45:30.

special horses today. I'm welling up. My mare tried so hard for me.

:45:31.:45:35.

She was a star. I couldn't ask any more of her. #

:45:36.:45:52.

Doesn't he come through time and time again -- doesn't it come

:45:53.:46:00.

through time and time again that these riders worship these horses.

:46:01.:46:04.

The love and care and attention that goes into these horses is pretty

:46:05.:46:09.

special. It is. You know, the emotion we've seen from some of

:46:10.:46:12.

these top riders, they are professionals, but they love their

:46:13.:46:15.

horses and they appreciate what their horses give them. There's no

:46:16.:46:19.

question these horses give us a lot. They give us everything they have

:46:20.:46:23.

and an enormous amount of pleasure to boot. Le le le, the -- Pascal

:46:24.:46:32.

Leroy. Another one who has done well. 56 years old and with Minos

:46:33.:46:39.

Leroy. Another one who has done Petra. He is owned by Pascal and his

:46:40.:46:42.

wife. He jumped a very stylish round. He had a 47.3 dressage.

:46:43.:46:49.

Across the country, just added 15.2 to claim third place.

:46:50.:46:58.

If he jumps a clear round then it is game on to beat Tim Price and Paul

:46:59.:47:07.

Tapner. There's nothing in it. France won - the only French winner

:47:08.:47:14.

here at Badminton. This partnership looked so good

:47:15.:47:17.

yesterday. Never looked in a hurry. It was so sort of non-French if you

:47:18.:47:22.

like, in the way he rode cross-country, because brilliant

:47:23.:47:27.

rider and brilliant... Oh! And that was just a classic miss, I am

:47:28.:47:29.

afraid. 66.5. Still stays in third place.

:47:30.:47:41.

Doesn't know! This is the the last time he might

:47:42.:48:21.

get a time fault and he does. Oliver Townend moves up, so does Harry

:48:22.:48:26.

Meade. Oliver Townend, second, with two to jump and Harry Meade third.

:48:27.:48:34.

He just didn't get it right there at all. The horse touched down and had

:48:35.:48:40.

no choice but to crash through the fence.

:48:41.:48:46.

Out here in the collecting ring you can see Paul Tapner warming up.

:48:47.:48:50.

He'll be last to go. The leading Britain, whatever happens will be

:48:51.:48:53.

Oliver Townend. You must be thrilled. In 2010 you had a fall you

:48:54.:49:00.

were pretty lucky to survive. Armada was a tricky horse in that phase. I

:49:01.:49:06.

didn't get the distance I wanted and he ended up with his head up.

:49:07.:49:17.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but - I am very pleased with the -- but

:49:18.:49:22.

I am very pleased with the overall result. Horses like Armada, a

:49:23.:49:29.

straightforward and at the same time her ability is fantastic and I thank

:49:30.:49:35.

to Mr Nicholson for letting me ride the horse and for the owner because

:49:36.:49:39.

without this horse I would not be here. It is good to see you back.

:49:40.:49:46.

Well done! Thanks. Tim Price for New Zealand. 35 years old. Married to

:49:47.:49:51.

Jenell this year. This is his most outstanding performance so far.

:49:52.:49:56.

Second place. outstanding performance so far.

:49:57.:50:05.

He's got one fence in hand over Sam Griffiths at the moment. He hasn't

:50:06.:50:12.

got that now. He's got less. Price 61.6 he started op. One down

:50:13.:50:18.

so far. One down. Could have had more. A

:50:19.:50:24.

little bit casual in here. He's got a bit on his brid le.

:50:25.:50:34.

little bit casual in here. not got the greatest record in this

:50:35.:50:35.

phase. Tim was a bit concerned... Another one away. So, he's going to

:50:36.:50:44.

move up into second place. Could it be an Australian 1-2?

:50:45.:50:56.

He seems to jump the oxers very well, this horse.

:50:57.:50:56.

height. The uprights, he is a little casual. He doesn't have a lot of

:50:57.:51:07.

respect for them. Such a good horse cross-country.

:51:08.:51:12.

Tim is giving him such a good ride. All he can do he is doing.

:51:13.:51:21.

And that's gone. Harry Meade has gone up another place and that's

:51:22.:51:26.

gone. Oh, dear! It drops him right down. Ninth place. 80.6.

:51:27.:51:35.

What other drama is in the locker here at Badminton before that

:51:36.:51:38.

What other drama is in the locker is decided for that Mitsubishi

:51:39.:51:44.

Motors Trophy? And here is the man - Paul Tapner.

:51:45.:52:07.

He's done it before. He knows what it's all about.

:52:08.:52:21.

Now with the Barkers, 56.4. So, he's got two fences in hand. He did have

:52:22.:52:26.

one in hand overnight. In fact, he's now got two but not

:52:27.:52:32.

three to stay in front about win the trophy for the second time.

:52:33.:52:57.

It will be a new starter, whoever wins this title. Can it be this man

:52:58.:53:18.

for Australia? What a brilliant round this partner

:53:19.:53:23.

partnership gave yesterday. He looked a little weary in the end. I

:53:24.:53:28.

was about to say he looked good in the collection ring, the little bit

:53:29.:53:33.

we saw of him. That is an early pole to have down. It is a long way

:53:34.:53:37.

around here. He can afford to have one more down

:53:38.:53:38.

and stay there. Good riding there.

:53:39.:53:48.

He was quick to make that decision. There'll be one man listening to the

:53:49.:54:04.

reaction of the crowd outside and that is Sam Griffiths and he's got

:54:05.:54:15.

it. Sam has got it. Is there anyone else that is going

:54:16.:54:17.

to slip ahead 68.4. Another would move up. Oliver

:54:18.:54:35.

Townend and Harry Meade. Oh!

:54:36.:54:42.

And that's gone! 72.4 and he drops down to fourth. Believes the last.

:54:43.:54:49.

Is he inside the time? Yes, just! So near, yet so far and this

:54:50.:54:55.

competition, for the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy, has been drama from

:54:56.:55:00.

start to finish. So, he drops down to fourth. It is

:55:01.:55:07.

Australia who wins though. It is Sam Griffiths. Oliver Townend, sex onned

:55:08.:55:14.

and Harry Meade third -- second and Harry Meade third.

:55:15.:55:20.

Here he is. 25th after dressage. Coming into this with plenty of good

:55:21.:55:24.

riders ahead of you and you have come out as the winner. Perhaps I

:55:25.:55:28.

was the last man standing, but my horse was a star. I knew I could

:55:29.:55:34.

claw my way up because she is such a good jumper. I am so proud of my

:55:35.:55:39.

horse. She tried so hard. You were not even watching of Paul Tapner's

:55:40.:55:45.

round. I am great friends with Paul. I am thrilled for how I have ended

:55:46.:55:49.

up. Is this the highlight of your career so far? Without doubt. As a

:55:50.:55:55.

little boy I always grew up watching highlights of Badminton back in

:55:56.:55:58.

Australia. It was a thrill to win it here and to win is like a dream come

:55:59.:56:05.

true. . You have a team around you. The grooms and everyone at home. My

:56:06.:56:12.

head girl, she has worked so hard. My horse has looked beautiful all

:56:13.:56:16.

week. I cannot give her enough credit. Was there a moment when you

:56:17.:56:20.

thought you might win? No. I never really entertained the idea,

:56:21.:56:24.

actually. So, it is just a thrill. Almost a bit of a shock. Listen, go

:56:25.:56:30.

and celebrate now. Many congratulations to Sam, who has won

:56:31.:56:35.

Badminton, 2014. Well, there are the Australians

:56:36.:56:40.

celebrating, as well they might. It is Sam Griffiths who wins with the

:56:41.:56:47.

11-year-old mare. This is a very, very good line-up

:56:48.:57:15.

for the 2014 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Trials. We have celebrated

:57:16.:57:22.

with Sam Griffiths. We must co-miss rate with Paul Tapner. That was a

:57:23.:57:29.

great, great shame. It is the sport. The horse has been amazing in the

:57:30.:57:33.

first two phases and did the best he can. Unfortunately he didn't get the

:57:34.:57:37.

same out of him today, which is a real shame for everybody.

:57:38.:57:42.

But, you know, that's just how it happens. At the beginning of the

:57:43.:57:46.

week and you had told me I would have been fourth, I would have been

:57:47.:57:51.

more than happy with that. You will be hugged deeply by your children!

:57:52.:57:55.

What an extraordinary competition we've had here. Coming up on BBC Two

:57:56.:58:02.

straight after us is the brilliant programme Inspire. This week we meet

:58:03.:58:07.

three people striving for excellence and leaving nothing to chance. We

:58:08.:58:13.

will catch up with a sprinter, a judo star and the squash world

:58:14.:58:20.

champion. Inspire The Olympic Journey, next on BBC Two. So it is

:58:21.:58:28.

on straight after us. On BBC One Final Score.

:58:29.:58:34.

I have to say, we knew this would be unpredictable. Three-day eventing

:58:35.:58:38.

always is. No-one expected that the winner would come from 25th place

:58:39.:58:43.

after dressage, fifth after cross-country and win the major

:58:44.:58:47.

trophy. Well done to Sam Griffiths. What a story for Harry Meade, who

:58:48.:58:51.

last August was told he would never ride again. He recovers and finishes

:58:52.:58:54.

third.
