Episode 2 Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour

Hello and welcome to Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour. This is the

series where we follow the Olympic Torch all around the UK and give

you the low-down on everything you need to know about the Olympic

Games. We are delighted to be coming to you, live this morning,

from Belfast! APPLAUSE. Hello, Belfast! Lots of smiling faces. As

you can see on the map, we were in Caerphilly last week. We have now

made our way to Belfast! The torch has not arrive until tomorrow but

we are here to get the party started so here we are. He is up

for a party? There are definitely up for it. Coming up today...

Access All Areas at the Olympic village to get an exclusive look at

for the Olympic stars will be staying. We've got Round Two of our

Blue Peter's Big Olympic Challenge. And this week, it's a nail-biting

penalty shootout. And, hold on to your hats. We are going to be

joined by pop star and huge Olympics fan, Westlife's Nicky

Byrne. CHEERING. Each week, we send a team of school children out to

follow the Olympic torch so, Dempsey from BBC News School Report

100,000 welcomes. This week in the first stop for the torch in

Northern Ireland is in my home town of Belfast and I have the privilege

of running with the torch myself. First, let us look at where the

torch has been over the last week. Cardiff to Liverpool. Olympic fever

hit Wales last Saturday, seeing Matt Smith and former Blue Peter

presenter Gethin Jones carrying the Olympic flame and on Monday, Chris

Moyles was the surprise celebrity torch-bearer in Aberystwyth. By

Tuesday of the torch had reached the very top of Mount Snowdon. Amir

Khan carried the torch through his home town of Bolton on Thursday and

on Friday it was greeted by This is Belfast's newest landmark,

the Titanic museum, built to commemorate the 100 anniversary of

the ship which was built right here in Belfast. Welcome to Victoria

Square shopping centre. It cost �400 million to build and has 90 it

shops. I hope you have enjoyed this whistle-stop tour of Belfast. I am

Dempsey is with us. That was amazing. You went shopping at the

end, by anything nice? Yes, there is good shopping. Check out your

shoes! Look at those! They are fabulous. They will be in the

The Olympic torch is on its way to Belfast, stopping off in the Isle

of Man and there are various ways it has been transported around the

country. It is currently 20,000 ft in the air. On board a plane. Do

they keep it alight? They do. The use a special miner's lamp to make

sure that the flame does not go out and to ensure that it arrives in

Belfast in one piece. Sam, Jack, you are excited? Why is that?

Because of the football. And what about you, Sam? The swimming and

diving. What about Tom Daley? s! Ethan, lean forward. How many

Blue Peter badges do you have? of them! Give him a round of

applause! I can feel the excitement in the air, but only because of the

Olympic flame but because of our special guest, creeping onto the

stage. I'll give you at home some clues. He is one member of a band

that has had 14 number one UK singles. That band has sold 44

million records! It is, of course, Nicky Byrne from Westlife! Hello!

Thank you for joining us. On the bid fever is gripping the nation.

What are you looking forward to? Everything that will go on. But we

have a girl in Ireland called Katie Taylor who is a very good boxer,

the world champion, so I am looking forward to see if she can bring

home gold for Ireland. Fingers crossed. Not many people realise

that used to be a footballer? moons ago! You should enjoy this

next film, we will give you a guide to Olympic sports. This week, it is

football and the host is none other than Team GB manager, Stuart

Il Stuart Pearce, manager of Sir -- Olympic football. Football has been

part of the Olympics for over 100 years, first played in London in

1908. Great Britain even won gold at years so let's hope we can

repeat that this time around. for the first time another 30 years,

footballers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were

joined together as Team GB, to try to win the men's and women's

Olympic gold medals. And these games will be played at some of the

country's most prestigious football grounds. Over 500 men and women

will be playing and because of the large amounts of matches, football

is the only event that will start before the opening ceremony. Stuart

Pearce is only allowed to choose three players over the age of 23.

That leaves some very famous faces nervously waiting to see if they

have been selected. The way I will approach this is looking at the

younger end of the squad and then three over-age players to fill in

the places for we are possibly week and not as strong. Some of the

world's best players have won Olympic gold medals, including

Lionel Messi for Argentina in 2008 and Samuel Vettel, in 2000, he was

part of the Cameroon side that won gold with this -- penalty shoot-out.

We feel as though we will be pretty much prepared for the penalty

shoot-out. I let the players from the music in the music room --

dressing room. I think that is to block out the managers! They cannot

hear us so much. I don't have the players what time to go to bed, I

don't tuck them in. I leave it to their own professionalism to get

themselves into bed. It should be fantastic, just for football but

the whole country. That in the truest meaning of the word is a

golden goal. He has stolen a dance! My little dance. How good would it

be to get David Beckham and Ryan Giggs on the same team? You have

played at Wembley? I have, 2008, we took part in soccer it. And it was

celebrities and X professionals. It was great, playing with all these

great players and in that stadium it was crazy. We want to make the

most of this opportunity and testers go. Come this way. You have

agreed to take part in a penalty shoot-out. Go down there, past the

penalty-takers. We will be using this official Olympic ball, known

as Albert. Anybody know why? A the Albert Hall! Cockney rhyming slang.

This is what we will be using. And yes! If Nicky survives this he

will perform with the boys it wrong and if he does not, he will be

carried off. Go to the concert tonight, if he has black eyes, we

are very sorry. To come down to Ormeau Park and Sales, this is free,

Every week we look back at the history of the Olympics. That was a

near miss! This week, we are going to the USA. 5, 4, 3, 2, one!

1984 Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles in the USA. This is the

home of Holywood and were some of the greatest movies of all time

have been made. In fact, that year read like a script from a summer

blockbuster. It even had some scandal. It came in the 3000 metre

women's final. American sweetheart Mary Decker was a favourite. And in

front of the home crowd the scene was set for American Claudy. But

her biggest rival was African-born Zola Budd, who competed for Great

Britain. Zola Budd, who famously ran barefoot, was keen to take the

crown away from the USA but how far was she when to go to get that?

world champion caught her... And Mary Decker is down! Her Olympic

Dreams were over and although Zola Budd did finish, she was

disqualified after crossing the line. 1 R later, she was reinstated

as the judges no longer thought it was her fault. Decca was very angry

and refused to speak to Zola Budd about it. She tried to express

herself. I said, don't bother. Despite all that the dot of, the

collision in the race will be argued about four decades. Oh! You

would be absolutely gutted. A let's be honest, she fell over! We could

argue for years and that is one example of the emotion that goes

with the Olympics. If you want to hear from a gold medal at lits,

going to be tracking down some of our great Olympians. Let's look at

what is still to come... We see if Nicky Byrne can match Steve

Redgrave in our test of strength. And he will hold their nerve from

the penalty spot in the Olympic challenge? Probably denied by the

post. One of the activity is down here is the assault course right at

the back of the playing field. I am a fine standing Olympian in fine

form with my bulging muscles. I don't need to do this because we

have an expert. Rav Wilding! Hello! I am at this very special Olympic

challenge cause and I have not done anything like this since the army.

You need all the skills, strength and determination of an athlete

just to get through. Can I do it? Come on! Let's give it a go. You

need to stride across these platforms, just like the triple

jump. Then we charge through the cargo net. Energy-sapping. Just

like Mr Usain Bolt would do in the 100 metres. The next section...

This is very tricky. The springboard. Just like those divers.

And I have made it. Now... This is the hardest part of the entire

course. All about balance. Just like Olympic gymnasts. I don't want

to fall off. What do you reckon? Oh! I made it through. This section

is all about fancy footwork. Just like Mr David Beckham and the

footballers. BO! Will I go through? It is a bit of a tight squeeze.

But... I have made it! That was tough. If you fancy having a go,

get down, loads of fun. I need to We could have made that more fun by

throwing wet sponges at him! Thanks, Rav. That looks like loads of fun!

Now, over the series we will be going behind the scenes to see what

it takes to put together the London Olympics. Have you ever wondered

what it will be like for the athletes staying in the Olympic

Village? I managed to get a sneak- peek, when I went Access All Areas.

The Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, has been under construction

since May 2008. It took 46,000 workers to build it and is home to

eight different arenas, as over the Games, we will see sporting history

made. It's not just supporting been used at the Olympic Park. After

competing, the athletes will need a place to rest. In the Olympic

Village. I have an Access All Areas pass to see the bits you don't

normally see. The 10,000 athletes will need 10,000 beds, and the man

who has the task to get Mehdi is Tony Sainsbury. It is exciting to

be in the Olympic village. It is the best plays to be in, you can

keep the stadium, this is where the athletes win their medals. If we

don't prepare them right, they won't do well out there. How do you

work out who goes where? We have 204 Olympic committees. We give

them the space. They make the decision based on what is best for

their team. Close to the dining room. A quiet place. Usain Bolt

could be here. I want to be able to say that I made what potentially

could be, maybe, Usain Bolt's bed! William marks, get set. Go! The

bedroom is now fully furnished. There is one problem I have

discovered. If you are normal size, you can fit in quite easily. But,

Usain Bolt is six feet five inches. Don't worry. They have thought

about it. Watch this. An extension for the bed for taller athletes. I

hope he stays in here, wouldn't it be great.

APPLAUSE. If we had to share a room, I am so

messy. But he is so organised. Winning Olympic gold is sometimes

about being the fastest, but it can also be about being the strongest.

So each week, we're testing the might and power of our special

guest. I'm sorry to say, Nicky, that you are unlucky to be in the

footsteps of Britain's greatest As you can see, he managed to get

maximum points last week, by hitting the bell. I am feeling

strong, but that is a lot of pressure. Let me talk to the

audience. How well will he do? will do 100! Yes! You love Nicky

Byrne, don't you! Can you match it? It is a hard act

to follow. Great, he's giving it a go. Are we ready? Three. Two. One.

It's hammer time! CHEERING. I am not tall enough. We

will have to render it goes up there. We will get a ladder later.

Now it's time for the second round of Blue Peter's Olympic Challenge.

Last week, it was Brendan and Laura who stole the show, and share the

top of the leader board. It wasn't a good start for me. In

nine the Week event. It's time to find that if anything gets better

for me. Time to hand over to Dan Walker. Welcome again. Helen,

bonnet and four of their celebrity friends go head-to-head in these

Athletes, greetings once again. We have come to the city of Madejski

Stadium, a Premier League football ground. You will be taking

penalties in this goal. We need someone who has done it, we need

England's goalkeeper, Rachel! This squad will be taking penalties

against you. What knowledge can you give them? If you pick your spot

early, that is your best bet. If you changed your mind, it can go

wrong. I think they're ready, are you ready? They should be warming

up but two of our celebrities Cardiff where they are. This is mad

that we on this pitch. For some of them, the chance to play on the

Manchester City pitch is the least of their worries. I am frightened

of footballs, and don't like them coming towards me. I am really

scared. I have never played football before. A I have

discovered I am no good at hurdles. Or football. I don't know what to

do. As a training progresses, there is a fair bit of confidence. Helen

is one to be watched. If she beats me on this, you are great, but, yes.

In the nicest possible way, I am used to is slightly higher skill

level. I think he could be really good.

The heat is taking this for granted. I don't even know where he has

gone! How athletes will begin right here. That moment where the palms

get sweaty and you remember all those people over the years who

famously missed from the penalty spot. It is hard to stay in his own.

Footballing history is about to be made. They get five goes to score

as many as they can. Here's your match commentator.

Here they M -- here they are at the Getty had Stadium. Helen Skelton

his first. She was looking good earlier. It is one of the bar. The

cut Rachel celebrating as she punches the air.

A chance to take an early lead but both were not able to take

advantage. Round two, and three copycat

penalties. Rachel, the goalkeeper, took the upper hand.

Helen's didn't -- Helen still couldn't find the corner.

Is this an opportunity. Bottom left, a great goal and what a celebration.

Over-the-top acting a bit! They howled with a goalkeeper. An Oscar!

Although the standard improved thankfully, no more goals was

called as which will bruise why she is England goalkeeper.

And, sudden death. Any footballer will tell you this

is the most tense thing in the game. Focusing. Stepping up. Bottom

corner. Really done. She knows she had the upper hand. Well taken. If

she misses this, third place. Straight at the keeper. Safe hands.

A Well done. A cheeky little winner. A very pleased with myself.

Up steps Barney, looking composed. Right for it, he hit the post. The

goalkeeper was beaten but the would work stopped him. Hope his

confidence isn't shaken by that. Brendon struggled with his first

penalty. Romeo went into the lead, sending Rachel the wrong way. And

taking out the camera as well! Barney began to find his range, a

fantastic strike in the right hand corner.

And things really hotting up, Barney was a whisker away from

scoring again. The England goalkeeper, brilliant. Ray mere

takes the lead again. Things got worse for barley.

Brendan slotted his away. Romeo, with a chance to take

maximum points. The pressure is on but he thrives

on pressure. A long run-up. He is pointing to the left hand. But he

went bottom right. He fault her -- fooled.

Down to the final penalty to see who takes second place. Forcing a

But Romeo's stole the show. I gave it my best shot. Yes.

Well done, everybody. The event is over. I watch football for my

living. It wasn't quite up there, the standard, but it was could

nonetheless. In third place, barley and Laura. -- Barney. The winners.

I didn't realise how disappointed I looked. In no way you feel

confident you do well -- will do well, and you don't.

The potential there for England? This one has got some skill.

I took it a little bit too seriously. I would like to

apologise I took it so seriously. I was very impressed. Team GB for

both you. So let us see what that has done to the leader board.

You are in bronze medal position. Thank you very much, you lovely

Romeo has moved into gold medal position. It can all change. Still

very early days, seven competitions to go. Remember, there are only

three medals. So, three people will get nothing.
