Sunderland. Get ready for your Olympic countdown. Five, four,

:01:53.:02:03.
:02:03.:02:04.

three, two, one... Hello, welcome to Blue Peter's Big

:02:04.:02:08.

Olympic Tour. This is your ultimate guide to the Olympics. We are

:02:08.:02:12.

following the Olympic Torch around the UK. This week we are delighted

:02:12.:02:22.
:02:22.:02:31.

to be coming to you live from Hello!

:02:31.:02:35.

Where have we been so far. We started in Wales, Belfast,

:02:35.:02:39.

Dunbarton and now here we are on the opposite side of the coast in

:02:39.:02:44.

the north east in Sunderland. The torch had a very early start

:02:44.:02:51.

this morning. It was on the road at 6.25am. It is on its way here. In

:02:51.:02:54.

two hours' time it is going to be here in Herrington Country Park.

:02:55.:03:01.

This is the live footage now. It is two hours away.

:03:01.:03:05.

If you are anywhere near that torch, do get out and see it, because it

:03:05.:03:12.

is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Last week we showed a shot of Craig

:03:12.:03:16.

and had a tweet from his mum. We hope you enjoyed it. We are going

:03:16.:03:23.

to be at Herrington Country Park all day, it is a free event. All

:03:23.:03:31.

the details are on the website. Here is what is still to come.

:03:31.:03:36.

It is round four of our Olympic challenge, and we are in the vole

:03:36.:03:42.

drom trying -- velodrome, where we are trying out track cycling. We

:03:42.:03:46.

reveal the Horrible Histories Olympic song. You won't be able to

:03:46.:03:52.

get it out of your head. We are joined by two special guests,

:03:52.:04:02.

Joe McElderry and Matt Baker. Each week we send children out and about

:04:02.:04:08.

to follow the torch relay. So it is time to go over to Jacob from BBC

:04:08.:04:11.

News School Report who has been following the torch over the last

:04:11.:04:16.

week. Welcome to Sunderland. I am one of

:04:16.:04:20.

the people privileged to be holding the Olympic Torch today, but here

:04:20.:04:25.

is a round up of where the torch has been since last Saturday.

:04:25.:04:32.

The torch has travelled from Glasgow all around the Schett land

:04:32.:04:35.

-- Shetland Islands before finishing up in Newcastle. It was

:04:35.:04:41.

on Loch Ness and appeared on stage at the Loch Ness festival.

:04:41.:04:51.
:04:51.:04:57.

It travelled on a gondola and mountain bank. It is really

:04:57.:05:03.

emotional. Crowds awaited the flame at Edinburgh castle. Last night it

:05:03.:05:10.

moved on to Newcastle. Now to Sunderland. Me and my school

:05:10.:05:20.
:05:20.:05:22.

report crew are going to show you some of our area. Behind me is the

:05:22.:05:27.

monument. It is one of the area's best loved landmarks. It features

:05:27.:05:32.

on the crest of Sunderland FC, which is where we are heading next.

:05:33.:05:38.

This is the Stadium of Light, home of Sunderland Football Club. I am a

:05:38.:05:48.
:05:48.:05:49.

big fan! Just outside the city, we are some

:05:49.:05:54.

beaches. Hope you liked what you saw of Sunderland. I am off to find

:05:54.:06:02.

the Olympic Torch. That monument that featured there,

:06:02.:06:08.

is right here by the park. Jacob is here. It is a big day for you. You

:06:08.:06:14.

are doing something special in a bit. Later on at 3.15, I am

:06:14.:06:19.

carrying the Olympic Torch through Hexham. Well done. You have the

:06:19.:06:22.

clothes on. Where is the torch?. You don't get the torch until you

:06:22.:06:29.

start. All the best for today. APPLAUSE

:06:29.:06:32.

What an exciting moment. Talk me through what you are looking

:06:32.:06:39.

forward to? I am looking forward to when the Olympic Torch goes passed

:06:39.:06:48.

Sunderland. High five to Michael. You have six Blue Peter badges. It

:06:48.:06:58.
:06:58.:07:09.

# Time to say goodbye. It is the fabulous Joe McElderry.

:07:09.:07:14.

Welcome to the show. That was you doing opera, but you won the X

:07:14.:07:17.

factor. You have doing all kinds of things. Jack of all trades. I have

:07:17.:07:24.

a new album out on 17 September. It is like pop ballads. I have been

:07:24.:07:31.

writing on it. I finished last Saturday. It is all ready to go.

:07:31.:07:34.

should mention you are a good runner, because I met you at the

:07:34.:07:41.

Great North Run. You ran that 13 miles much people many people gave

:07:41.:07:48.

you credit for. I did it in one hour 39.

:07:48.:07:52.

We have been talking about the excitement of the Olympics and the

:07:52.:07:55.

home crowd. How do you cope with the nerves when you have loads of

:07:55.:08:02.

people looking. It spurs you on more. The bigger the crowd, the

:08:02.:08:07.

more adrenaline is pumping it through your body. You perform

:08:07.:08:15.

better. Can I say something, we know today is a big day, but it is

:08:15.:08:19.

your 21st birthday. It is, yes. Happy birthday Joe. We have a cake

:08:19.:08:27.

for you as well. You didn't have to, thank you very much.

:08:27.:08:33.

Congratulations Joe. It's time for us to get stuck into

:08:33.:08:41.

our next Olympic guide. We bring you an insiders guide to an Olympic

:08:41.:08:51.
:08:51.:08:53.

event. Today it is the turn of Paralympian Sarah Storey.

:08:53.:09:00.

I am Sarah Storey. Here is your Blue Peter guide to cycling.

:09:00.:09:05.

Sarah is one of Great Britain's most successful athletes. She's won

:09:05.:09:15.
:09:15.:09:17.

an incredible 18 Paralympic medals, including seven golds. In 2012 Sir

:09:17.:09:20.

Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Mark Cavendish will be hoping to

:09:20.:09:25.

add to their medal collections. Cycling events will take place out

:09:25.:09:30.

on the road in the brand new Purpose-built velodrome. There are

:09:30.:09:39.

five track events in which they will compete.

:09:39.:09:44.

For Sarah, cycling wasn't her first sport. Back in 1992 she won

:09:45.:09:49.

Paralympic gold in the swimming pool when she was just 14. She even

:09:49.:09:57.

came to the Blue Peter studios to show us her medals. I did four

:09:57.:10:02.

Paralympic Games as a swimmer and then I started back in the swimming

:10:02.:10:08.

pool but picked up ear infections. While I wasn't allowed to swim, I

:10:08.:10:14.

was using a bike to stay fit. So I was asked by British cycling

:10:14.:10:18.

whether I wanted to pursue it more as a career. I decide today change

:10:18.:10:27.

sports at the end of 2005. It's been brilliant. We are in Majorca,

:10:28.:10:32.

it means we can mix the rides up really well, a flatter ride in the

:10:32.:10:37.

morning and hilly in the afternoon. I love training. I don't know why,

:10:37.:10:43.

I just like going out on long bike rides. I love the whole thing. If I

:10:43.:10:48.

am working on a climb, I will pretend I am race ago competitor.

:10:48.:10:55.

Obviously I always win! Because I was born with my hand the

:10:55.:11:01.

way it is, it is something I have never known any different. There

:11:02.:11:07.

are some adaptations on my bike to help. When you have never known any

:11:07.:11:13.

different it doesn't make your life any harder. Having a home games is

:11:13.:11:23.
:11:23.:11:25.

the sort of thing every athlete dreams of. What an amazing story.

:11:25.:11:28.

Find out just how difficult that really is a bit later when we try

:11:28.:11:35.

our hand at track cycling in the Blue Peter Olympic tour. Now it's

:11:35.:11:43.

time to meet our second guest. He used to be a blue pretter presenter

:11:43.:11:47.

-- Blue Peter presenter. It's Matt Baker. It's lovely to be home, this

:11:47.:11:57.

is perfect. We used to be -- you used to be a gymnast. Gymnast what

:11:57.:12:05.

type of preparation is involved for commentating. With gymnastics, you

:12:05.:12:10.

haven't got an idea what they are going to cut to, so you have to

:12:10.:12:15.

research every single gymnast on every piece of apparatus. There is

:12:15.:12:21.

an enormous amount of preparation. You have sheets with all the names

:12:21.:12:27.

and everything they have done. you glad to be broadcasting or is

:12:27.:12:31.

there a bit of you that would like to be competing? It was my dream to

:12:31.:12:38.

be at the Olympics, but when my gymnastics came to an end, it is

:12:38.:12:42.

wonderful to be still part of the team. I still feel very much

:12:42.:12:48.

connected to it. Back dem 1967, we are going to go back and look into

:12:48.:12:54.

the past and see how the Olympics has changed. We are going to check

:12:54.:13:04.
:13:04.:13:04.

out a Romanian gymnast who changed the world. 19676, Canada held the

:13:04.:13:09.

summer Olympic Games in Montreal. There were a few problems. The

:13:09.:13:12.

builders who were working on getting the stadium ready went on

:13:12.:13:16.

strike for over 100 days and it meant the stadium was never fully

:13:16.:13:24.

finished. Regardless of that, its Games did start on time. And the

:13:24.:13:28.

Queen was there to help get things under way, but she wasn't just

:13:28.:13:32.

there on official business, but also to support her daughter Ann,

:13:32.:13:36.

the Princess Royal, who was spetting in the -- competing in the

:13:37.:13:43.

British eventing team. The stand out performance from the

:13:43.:13:48.

1976 games came from a 14-year-old Romanian gymnast by the name of

:13:48.:13:52.

Nadia Comeneci. It was her first Olympic Games and the world didn't

:13:52.:13:56.

know what to expect from such a young girl.

:13:56.:14:01.

Nadia performed perfect routines across the sport and scored an

:14:01.:14:06.

amazing perfect ten, which had never been done before. It was so

:14:06.:14:11.

unexpected, score board couldn't display it properly.

:14:11.:14:18.

Nadia performed a remarkable seven perfect 10s and took home three

:14:18.:14:28.
:14:28.:14:31.

Gold Medals. Unbelievable at that age. Would she

:14:31.:14:34.

still win gold now. It is interesting, because with that

:14:34.:14:37.

performance with that routine the answer would be no, because

:14:37.:14:40.

nowadays there are two different scores, difficulty and excuse, so

:14:40.:14:46.

you need your perfect ten but you have to risk it now. It is such a

:14:46.:14:52.

great spectator sport these days. Here is still what is to come on

:14:53.:14:58.

today's show. We will be premiering the Horrible

:14:58.:15:03.

Histories Olympic song. We will see which one of us will

:15:03.:15:10.

record the fassest lap of the velodrome in our Celebrity Olympic

:15:10.:15:17.

Challenge. It really is all about testing your

:15:17.:15:20.

strength, testing character but now we are going to test how strong

:15:20.:15:26.

people's arms are. Matt Baker and Joe McElderry, you are going to

:15:26.:15:36.
:15:36.:15:39.

face the biggest challenge yet. Steve Redgrave got right to the top.

:15:39.:15:44.

Nicky Byrne got to the top. So guys it is open to you. Joe you are up

:15:44.:15:54.
:15:54.:15:59.

first. Three, two, one.

:15:59.:16:09.
:16:09.:16:10.

That was good, 80. Mr Baker, your turn.

:16:10.:16:20.
:16:20.:16:24.

BELL RINGS Joe, you are just under 80.

:16:24.:16:34.
:16:34.:16:35.

proud of that! It's time to celebrate, the

:16:35.:16:39.

Olympics is about getting everyone together. You are in for a

:16:49.:17:07.

treatment now, it is Horrible # 776 BC Olympics was begun

:20:08.:20:11.

singing all week. We are lucky enough to be joined by

:20:11.:20:16.

two of the guys from the Horrible Histories gang. We will be doing

:20:16.:20:19.

Horrible Histories live and in the show you will be able to do the

:20:19.:20:22.

song live as well. Anybody who is in the area and wants to come down

:20:22.:20:30.

and join us, please do. Does everybody get a toga as well?

:20:30.:20:35.

sure we can find a spare one. don't need a ticket, it is a free

:20:35.:20:38.

event, Herrington Country Park and you can sing Flame.

:20:38.:20:41.

Seeing the guys dressed in these, it must have been difficult to

:20:41.:20:47.

compete dressed like that. We found it tough enough wearing what we

:20:47.:20:53.

were wearing. Let's go over and find out what is

:20:53.:20:56.

happening in the Blue Peter Olympic Challenge.

:20:56.:21:01.

This is where Helen and Barney invite four celebrity friends to

:21:01.:21:05.

compete in nine events. At the end, we will have our own special podium.

:21:05.:21:09.

Only one person can go home with the very special Blue Peter Gold

:21:09.:21:14.

Medal. Time to get on their bikes. Here

:21:14.:21:24.
:21:24.:21:37.

How are you all feeling? Delighted to be here. This is going to be

:21:37.:21:43.

intense. This is track cycling. Another technical event. We have

:21:43.:21:47.

somebody here who is going to help you through, coach Nicola Anderson.

:21:47.:21:53.

The bikes you are going to use have a fixed gear and no breaks, so you

:21:53.:21:58.

can't stop pedalling. You have to master the track, also. Nicola is

:21:58.:22:03.

your master today. You will be pleased to hear we have Lucy, a

:22:03.:22:07.

junior world champion, to show you how it is done.

:22:07.:22:10.

This time trial challenge will see our women, then the men, ride one

:22:10.:22:17.

lap of the velodrome on their own. The fastest lap wins. The quickest

:22:17.:22:24.

way around is to follow the black line.

:22:24.:22:28.

The athletes soon find out that riding at a sharp angle is

:22:28.:22:37.

different to a normal road. feels slippy. I have no brakes, no

:22:37.:22:42.

safety net. When you go into the corner, your instinct is to turn in

:22:42.:22:47.

but you have to keep going straight and then you will turn with the

:22:47.:22:53.

shape of the velodrome. Adele is refusing to lead. It is not just

:22:53.:23:03.
:23:03.:23:06.

adeal who is struggling. I wanted to remind Romeo of his song 21

:23:06.:23:14.

Seconds To Go! You've got 21 seconds to go. If I

:23:14.:23:23.

make it in 21 seconds that would be a miracle.

:23:23.:23:30.

Does everybody feel they know what they are doing? Yes.

:23:30.:23:38.

Helen, you came out first, take to the track please.

:23:38.:23:48.
:23:48.:23:51.

Helen has had a chance to build up That black line is is the quickest

:23:51.:24:01.
:24:01.:24:10.

That's the time to beat. Adele now, she looked wobbly in

:24:10.:24:20.
:24:20.:24:34.

practise. I think the smile is one of relief!

:24:34.:24:38.

It's all down to singing sensation Laura.

:24:38.:24:48.
:24:48.:25:12.

This is a good run! For me, my favourite event so far,

:25:12.:25:16.

once you have got over the fear of going round the corner, it was

:25:16.:25:20.

really good fun to go as fast as you can. You have completed the

:25:20.:25:30.
:25:30.:25:44.

challenge. Down to the men now. He's building up a good time and

:25:44.:25:54.
:25:54.:25:56.

speed. That's just over our target time of

:25:56.:26:06.
:26:06.:26:07.

A chance for Barney. Slightly slower over the line after

:26:07.:26:17.
:26:17.:26:38.

Look at Brendan's start, you can tell this is a man on a mission.

:26:38.:26:48.
:26:48.:27:02.

You can see the concentration. He's taken first place, Romeo in

:27:02.:27:07.

silver and Barney third. It was all about pace. I pushed it

:27:07.:27:11.

hard. I am happy with the time lap I did. It was a very exciting thing

:27:11.:27:16.

to do. I know you are desperate to have another go, but it is becoming

:27:16.:27:22.

familiar familiar the three points go to Laura and Brendan.

:27:22.:27:28.

I have to say, that felt so much faster than it looks on the TV.

:27:28.:27:35.

Myself, Helen and Adele aren't in any medal-winning position. We are

:27:35.:27:42.

We are supposed to be sporting. bronze position Romeo has nine

:27:42.:27:48.

points. Silver Laura with ten and Brendan is in gold position with 11

:27:48.:27:54.

points. It's still is early days, things

:27:54.:27:59.

could change. Mr Baker, you were laughing a lot during that film.

:28:00.:28:04.

Brendan. The intensity there, but I know Brendan through Strictly, but

:28:04.:28:11.

can you put your money on him in the long haul? I wouldn't if I were

:28:11.:28:17.

you. We know what happens. Joe would you fancy giving that a go.

:28:17.:28:22.

would love to do the diving. Diving is still to come and that is a good

:28:22.:28:29.

one, because people do get turt, there is a mini tantrum!

:28:29.:28:39.
:28:39.:28:40.

We are back on the CBBC channel at 5.45. Then 9.00 on Saturday

:28:40.:28:42.

mornings Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour continues.

:28:42.:28:47.

We are going to be in Burnley. Make sure you are watching. Still

:28:47.:28:57.
:28:57.:28:58.

to come on next week's show: We will be joined by star of BBC

:28:58.:28:59.

drama Waterloo Road Lucien Laviscount.

:28:59.:29:04.

And you can see the next round of our Olympic challenge. We have

:29:04.:29:12.

glowing jackets and we will be doing something scary on a BMX.

:29:12.:29:20.

We look at how the medals are being made.

:29:20.:29:24.

Myself, Barney and Joe will be stick around here all day, so if

:29:24.:29:29.
