Hollow and a warm welcome to the Dewars Centre for the Scottish

:00:32.:00:37.

International open and this afternoon right here there were some

:00:38.:00:43.

pretty impressive champions on display stop world number one and

:00:44.:00:47.

the only man to successfully defend his title, Nick Brett embarks on his

:00:48.:00:54.

quest to win an unprecedented third consecutive Scottish international

:00:55.:00:57.

Open. When it is meant to be, it is meant to be, no one has ever

:00:58.:01:04.

retrained it, I was the lucky one. The man he beat in the last two

:01:05.:01:08.

finals also gets his challenge underway today and Paul Foster is

:01:09.:01:13.

determined to add to his 2012 Scottish victory. It is good to be

:01:14.:01:18.

back in Perth for the international Open. I have had a good last three

:01:19.:01:21.

years here and long may it continue. Rounding out our list of

:01:22.:01:28.

legends in action today, the 2014 champion and Commonwealth Games

:01:29.:01:31.

single bold medallist Darren Burnett. Lots of highlights to look

:01:32.:01:39.

forward to but the action actually got underway here on Saturday and at

:01:40.:01:42.

the start of play today, it went like this. Stewart Anderson was

:01:43.:01:49.

through from the world champion against Alex Wen. Andy Thomson Pete

:01:50.:01:55.

Brett Arkley. Mervyn King was knocked out against Graham

:01:56.:01:57.

McDougall. Greg Harlow managed to get through

:01:58.:02:11.

as did Jonathan Ross. David Gurley, the former world champion is out.

:02:12.:02:18.

John Price is out as well. Mark Royal is safely through. Let us get

:02:19.:02:23.

to the first of the matches this morning, John Fleming against Paul

:02:24.:02:27.

Foster. There are very few players as dominant and deadly as Paul

:02:28.:02:32.

Foster, he has been in the top five for the last 15 years, most of them

:02:33.:02:38.

either a second or first. He was the hottest of hot favourites against

:02:39.:02:42.

John Fleming. He is something of an unknown quantity, only 19 years old,

:02:43.:02:47.

he has won the British Isles under 25 singles title, he is a senior

:02:48.:02:52.

international but did know he was up against it today against the fourth

:02:53.:02:56.

time world singles champion. We will join the match now, in the first set

:02:57.:03:04.

and it is all square at seven peace. -- a piece.

:03:05.:03:13.

It will be interesting if the players go past the 30 seconds,

:03:14.:03:18.

there is a bill, but last year the first time we heard it, it gave us a

:03:19.:03:26.

bit of a fright -- bell. There are mixed feelings. It is not easy. That

:03:27.:03:39.

clock ticking away with every ball. It adds another dimension to

:03:40.:03:48.

televised alan-macro. -- bowls. It will never be introduced in

:03:49.:03:52.

mainstream play because they do not have the facilities for it. They

:03:53.:03:56.

rely on umpires to negate slow play. This is trouble. If you drop the

:03:57.:04:15.

Jack length slightly... This direction, he has been losing shots.

:04:16.:04:20.

It is properly why he adjusted it, I thought he would have gone very

:04:21.:04:25.

short. He will have to follow that one.

:04:26.:04:31.

Struggling. Oh dear! Real trouble now for Paul Foster.

:04:32.:05:06.

There is number three against the Jack length. Another Fozzie victory.

:05:07.:05:20.

He has been in many a pickle, you would not bet against him. He

:05:21.:05:25.

usefully gets out of so much trouble, will this get back in time,

:05:26.:05:29.

that is the question, here it comes, dropped back... It is just

:05:30.:05:39.

like Fozzie to do that and John will be looking down the backhand with

:05:40.:05:44.

this next bowl. That is why he is one of the best in the world. What

:05:45.:05:51.

he is looking at is getting onto that bowl, if he does and gets it

:05:52.:05:59.

absolutely plumb, he takes their red bowl out, that is a director shot

:06:00.:06:09.

through between the two. -- direct shot. John called the time-out to

:06:10.:06:14.

give him that little bit of extra time stop control the wait, that is

:06:15.:06:23.

better. Nice pace. Will it hold? He was a fraction.

:06:24.:06:31.

Typical Fozzie. Yes. That is why you love the sport, Paul Foster in

:06:32.:06:40.

trouble, looking at potentially losing the set, might have got a

:06:41.:06:46.

draw out of it, if he could then reply, but you do not want to lose a

:06:47.:06:52.

3 there and that was perfect will stop there was a little short on. He

:06:53.:06:59.

would have looked at the backhand and the angles were not good and he

:07:00.:07:03.

could have taken the green bowl and run through between the shorthand

:07:04.:07:08.

and the Jack will stop looked at the previous bowl but that is the sort

:07:09.:07:11.

of shot mag gives you a lot of confidence. John Fleming very much

:07:12.:07:23.

alive in this set, the advantage of the last bowl.

:07:24.:07:45.

That looked easy from the second it left his hand. A little snap of the

:07:46.:08:05.

fingers in frustration. He is certainly greening the alan-macro

:08:06.:08:11.

quite nicely, coming out in a straight line. -- bowls.

:08:12.:08:36.

You'd be tempted now to change bowl. Even a foot short now in the

:08:37.:08:47.

shorthand would be a cracking bowl. Onto the forehand he goes.

:08:48.:08:52.

Seize the bend. He is labouring a little bit. Six inches narrower, he

:08:53.:09:07.

would have been a lot happier. Potential little catch here. Make

:09:08.:09:12.

sure you are up. He is the wrong side of it. Put it

:09:13.:09:26.

into a good home, but, as soon as he was on the outside of the red one he

:09:27.:09:31.

was not going to get back in time. Interesting choice for Paul Foster,

:09:32.:09:36.

he has to guard against a potential Trail. That could make it to green.

:09:37.:09:43.

Either that or you block up beforehand by playing the perfect

:09:44.:09:48.

bowl. He is going to try and tap his own bowl or get cover. Percentage

:09:49.:09:57.

shot, this one. Two possibilities. He is not getting cover, though. A

:09:58.:10:07.

chance here. You are tighter, in off the bowl, pick up the Jack Ford two.

:10:08.:10:18.

The forehand will hold if you give three or four feat of green, it will

:10:19.:10:23.

hold with the extra weight. It could really change his line

:10:24.:10:30.

dramatically... That is probably half a metre inside his previous

:10:31.:10:39.

line. Had to go even narrower. Two shots for the set, Paul Foster. He

:10:40.:10:45.

had a chance to tired up, chance to win it, but Paul Foster in the end

:10:46.:10:51.

comes through with the final 3am is. Comes from 7-6 down to lead 10-7 and

:10:52.:11:02.

to take the opening set. Good set. So, Paul Foster taking the first set

:11:03.:11:07.

10-7 we join the match in the second set, John Fleming is ahead.

:11:08.:11:44.

Well, he is moving on to the forehand early and he has played it

:11:45.:11:54.

well. Yes. That is the way he started the first set.

:11:55.:12:21.

He does not like it, it will be an inch away. I think this one is a bit

:12:22.:12:30.

heavier, not much, though. It is not even heavier, it was wide actually.

:12:31.:12:37.

He knew something was wrong. Still a great shot.

:12:38.:12:44.

It is not only that, the angle is good to come off as well. He can use

:12:45.:12:49.

it as a shoulder. Does not need it. It is coming in

:12:50.:13:02.

right behind, that is a great bowl, it really is a shipper shot will

:13:03.:13:10.

stop Paul is having a good look at it -- a super shot.

:13:11.:13:20.

Being cautioned not to go to close in case the bowl moves, it looks

:13:21.:13:29.

like it is touching green, but not touching read. A great bowl from

:13:30.:13:42.

John Fleming. -- red. If it has won the green, you walk away. Walk away

:13:43.:13:49.

on that one. Big recovery bowl needed. What has

:13:50.:14:01.

been interesting, it is not always the player who has played the best

:14:02.:14:08.

bowls at the end, one good bowl from your opponent is enough to secure

:14:09.:14:12.

the shop. Quite often it is the last bowl or at the third one. Young was

:14:13.:14:19.

get the impression two players are feeling their way through the game

:14:20.:14:23.

and it is who is going to step up to the mark and put a couple of really

:14:24.:14:30.

good ends together -- you almost get the impression. You cannot look past

:14:31.:14:35.

Paul Foster when it comes to this. At the same time, this young man is

:14:36.:14:41.

showing no nerves whatsoever. He has been very happy out there, looks

:14:42.:14:44.

very content on the portable rink. a place for straight bowls,

:14:45.:15:44.

personally I do not think any rink or green is the place for straight

:15:45.:15:46.

bowls. I could not agree more. To bowl onto their jack. That will

:15:47.:16:59.

certainly be a receiver. Bowl onto bowl, it is a risky shot.

:17:00.:17:10.

A definite shot available here for John Fleming. I would be tempted on

:17:11.:17:18.

the backhand, funnily enough. Time-out called. You're almost

:17:19.:17:26.

guaranteeing it will stay in to the red. With that forehand, he has

:17:27.:17:35.

turned his back on it. It must be narrow. It is. He did not have the

:17:36.:17:52.

weight either, a bit of both. Interesting last 3am is on the set,

:17:53.:18:00.

Paul Foster will probably be two down -- 3am is. -- three ends. Sex

:18:01.:18:17.

ends on the second set, six shots scored. -- six. Paul Foster needs to

:18:18.:18:26.

tie the set to avoid advance and go to a tie-break.

:18:27.:18:40.

Both Alex Marshall and Paul Foster working with their bowls now, he is

:18:41.:18:51.

employed by them, he does not have much choice. At the same time, when

:18:52.:18:59.

the guys are going well, even when they are not going so well, the

:19:00.:19:05.

bowls really do not come into it, they will have put a lot of work in

:19:06.:19:10.

with a new set of bowls and checked out different things, so similar to

:19:11.:19:14.

their previous ones, no excuses there and nor should there be. I

:19:15.:19:22.

think it is one of these hard fought first-round matches, that is all,

:19:23.:19:28.

you have to grind it out. Good game so far. The number of seeds who have

:19:29.:19:35.

not made it through, David girlie, John Price have both gone out. --

:19:36.:19:49.

Davids Gourlay. Two good bowls, a tempting target. -- attempting.

:19:50.:19:56.

Looked good all the way. Give it a little bit extra pace, not much,

:19:57.:20:17.

just an arriving drawer. Just enough to get to its own, to punch it in or

:20:18.:20:23.

get down into the bowls or the green one. A split on the inside would be

:20:24.:20:26.

perfect. Solid jack, that will do. Slightly off centre, allowing

:20:27.:20:57.

changes just that little bit. -- the line changes.

:20:58.:21:25.

A couple and they are close enough to be difficult to beat.

:21:26.:21:48.

Just looking to take the weight from his last one.

:21:49.:22:06.

Still chucking through. Perfect line. Both the bowls work good, the

:22:07.:22:17.

first and the fourth. The weight just deserted.

:22:18.:22:26.

The battle of the Scots in the opening round, Paul Foster with the

:22:27.:22:33.

opening set, John Fleming, watching as his lead has evaporated in the

:22:34.:22:39.

second set. Sometimes you see their bowl dropping them, to tempt the

:22:40.:22:44.

opposition into trying to draw it off, any closer, he probably would

:22:45.:23:01.

have had a go at it. With weight... Jack was on the top of the tee, 27

:23:02.:23:10.

metres. At that of monkeying around with the mat and the jack in this

:23:11.:23:16.

match. Both players trying to find the length that suits them. There

:23:17.:23:20.

has been some very good bowling, some really good stuff. I suppose if

:23:21.:23:26.

you're going to be really harsh, you could say there were lot of short

:23:27.:23:30.

bowls and a bit of inconsistency, but it is the first round, it does

:23:31.:23:33.

take time. If Paul Foster does see this one

:23:34.:23:45.

out, John Fleming will no that their chances along the way, he is still

:23:46.:23:52.

very much in this for now. -- John Fleming will know that there are

:23:53.:23:53.

chances along the way. Just hope that awkward angle, he

:23:54.:24:22.

made not get much out of it, he has to go on the other side. He really

:24:23.:24:27.

needs the second shot, he wants to go into the last end at the absolute

:24:28.:24:32.

worse, one down, he does not want to be any more than that because he

:24:33.:24:36.

will have to chase the end a little bit. There is a shot here for Paul

:24:37.:24:43.

Foster. Egos of the turns the jack around for three will be very

:24:44.:24:49.

difficult to get out of -- he knows if he turns. I do not know if he has

:24:50.:24:52.

pushed it. He can still come around it. Going

:24:53.:25:07.

for the runner, try and open something up. It is a brave shot.

:25:08.:25:15.

The only danger with that is if he got into the green bowl he would

:25:16.:25:20.

have winged it out, three down and one bowl to come. I would have been

:25:21.:25:24.

inclined to draw that and try and get second, it was not that far away

:25:25.:25:31.

with his previous bowl. If you have got second you always have a chance

:25:32.:25:35.

of picking up a double in the last end. Bit of movement, just go again.

:25:36.:25:47.

That is a big bowl for Paul Foster, if he can pick up a two here. He did

:25:48.:25:56.

not allow it to annoy him, that little bit of movement, did he? Cut

:25:57.:26:04.

to the jack and it would have been absolutely perfect because he would

:26:05.:26:10.

have made a three. Just reset it himself. This was great, in it

:26:11.:26:20.

comes. They bear the mark are checking to see if it touched the

:26:21.:26:24.

jack. He is going again, cannot afford to get his own bowl. That has

:26:25.:26:30.

pace and power and rewards nothing in the end. You cannot blame him,

:26:31.:26:38.

very hard to beat those two bowls, he knew that himself. Take the two

:26:39.:26:48.

out, I think that is probably all. Again, Fozzie has put in a strong

:26:49.:26:50.

second half in the set. He has dipped into that well of good

:26:51.:27:07.

bowls, plucked a few out. He is looking like he will be on top of

:27:08.:27:11.

his opponent in the next round, John Fleming, he needs a three, he has

:27:12.:27:19.

only scored 13 in the match to date. Paul Foster, dropping short, John

:27:20.:27:28.

Fleming taking advantage. No such mistake from Paul Foster here.

:27:29.:27:50.

Paul Foster has two choices. You can follow his own or changed tack and

:27:51.:28:21.

rest on the green bowl. He is just trying to get olds on the head. Few

:28:22.:28:26.

inches heavy. A good effort. In it comes. A little

:28:27.:28:50.

on lucky, because he has turned the jack towards the red old. -- bowl. I

:28:51.:29:03.

don't think he will do anything different here other than draw this,

:29:04.:29:11.

because he can afford to lose two shots. You don't want to leave

:29:12.:29:16.

yourself a third to be taken out. If he rests a bowl either side, it

:29:17.:29:32.

doesn't really matter. He gets the closer one. That is already a strain

:29:33.:29:39.

to do. But he has turned his back a little on that, he must think he is

:29:40.:29:45.

heavy. It was certainly on his mind, but he has crept in. Just a blade,

:29:46.:29:54.

and he knew that out of the hand. Now, you need three. Do you go for

:29:55.:30:02.

the take-out with this bowl? Just draw it. Just draw under the red

:30:03.:30:09.

bowls, that is all he wants to do. He will do well to get back from

:30:10.:30:24.

there. He is too heavy. He was trying to reach them, but at the

:30:25.:30:29.

same time, he didn't want that pace, he just wanted to rest them off with

:30:30.:30:35.

a draw. Set the double, give himself a chance with his last bowl. Nothing

:30:36.:30:41.

on the re-spot, that is what he is looking at. No joy in the re-spot

:30:42.:30:45.

position. He is looking to get to this on the

:30:46.:30:59.

forehand, and I'm sure he has the weight. He is coming in for a close

:31:00.:31:02.

second. That is the shot I thought he would

:31:03.:31:16.

have played last time round. He was probably looking for the green one

:31:17.:31:19.

with that, but he knew that any touch on the jack was more than good

:31:20.:31:23.

enough. UMPIRE: Time-out calls. John has two

:31:24.:31:34.

time-outs remaining. I don't think he has a shot on, I really don't.

:31:35.:31:42.

That last shot of Paul Foster's has more or less killed it off. I think

:31:43.:31:53.

my jelly baby is safe. That is that imaginary jelly baby, of course. You

:31:54.:32:00.

wouldn't bet with a real one! John Fleming on his first trip to the

:32:01.:32:05.

Scottish International open has put up a terrific fight.

:32:06.:32:15.

APPLAUSE He survives against the 19-year-old

:32:16.:32:27.

Scott. He gave it his all, John Fleming. He led in the first and

:32:28.:32:32.

second set, but couldn't find a way to close them out. Paul Foster get

:32:33.:32:37.

himself safely into round two of the Scottish International open.

:32:38.:32:43.

Yes, four time world champion through, but Paul, you had to work

:32:44.:32:50.

for that. I knew that before the game started, and I didn't play

:32:51.:32:55.

awfully well. I played massive bowl when I needed to, but I kept

:32:56.:33:07.

dropping the shot. The match starts and the pace changes, and I should

:33:08.:33:12.

have known that. It gets frustrating that you think you are good, but you

:33:13.:33:18.

drop that shot. John, it is never easy when you are in the first round

:33:19.:33:22.

against the world champion. Didn't seem overawed to play against a guy

:33:23.:33:27.

of this quality, though. Paul has been here ten times, and it is my

:33:28.:33:31.

first time, I was just trying to settle in as quickly as I could. But

:33:32.:33:36.

towards the end of the first set, I struggled a little with my weight.

:33:37.:33:44.

But you are putting pressure on this guy here, and you seemed to be,

:33:45.:33:50.

watching your face, you didn't seem happy through a lot of that. You

:33:51.:33:54.

looked frustrated from that to time which allowed John to put pressure

:33:55.:33:58.

on you. The frustration is because you think you are good and yet you

:33:59.:34:03.

are dropping the shot. It is not a very good day at the office, but a

:34:04.:34:09.

win is a win. John gave me opportunities, so there were some

:34:10.:34:14.

good ends and some scrappy ends. But I got the main point.

:34:15.:34:18.

So, Paul Foster through to the second round, but he did have to

:34:19.:34:24.

work pretty hard for it. The man who won last year was in action here

:34:25.:34:30.

today, Nicky Brett. Since he won here two years ago, his success has

:34:31.:34:34.

been stratospheric. He became the first man to retain the Scottish

:34:35.:34:37.

title, and then took the International open title with an

:34:38.:34:41.

unbelievable display of quality bowls.

:34:42.:34:50.

I would rather be defending champion than never won it. Somebody is

:34:51.:34:57.

always going to defeat the defending champion some point, but I will try

:34:58.:35:01.

to carry the run on as long as I can. The emotion of losing was

:35:02.:35:07.

massively disappointing. Paul thoroughly deserved the win, he

:35:08.:35:11.

dominated the final. It was like being hit by a boss, he played

:35:12.:35:16.

really well. The following year, I went away, came back, I knew what

:35:17.:35:22.

happened the year before, so I knew it was going to be massively

:35:23.:35:25.

difficult, but I managed to hang in until the end, got a couple of good

:35:26.:35:28.

ones, got a good result with the last one.

:35:29.:35:38.

And I1-macro my first tournament, which is unbelievable for me. -- and

:35:39.:35:50.

I won my first tournament. When you win your first one, you have got the

:35:51.:35:57.

monkey off your back, if you like. And retain it, and again, played

:35:58.:36:04.

well in the final. The few good bowls here and there, the game. One

:36:05.:36:09.

of those finals probably a little more closely fought. And I just

:36:10.:36:16.

managed again to find a couple of good runs. When it is meant to be,

:36:17.:36:20.

it is meant to be. No one has ever retained it, someone was going to,

:36:21.:36:22.

and I was the lucky one. Records will tell you that it is

:36:23.:36:34.

difficult for the same person to win an event two years, back-to-back. It

:36:35.:36:41.

is difficult for the same person to win when each year, let alone win

:36:42.:36:46.

the same event three times. So someone is eventually going to put

:36:47.:36:51.

me out. I just hope it is later on in the tournament rather than

:36:52.:36:55.

earlier. He really does like making history

:36:56.:36:58.

does Nicky Brett, and today he was up against team-mate Robert Elmore.

:36:59.:37:05.

It is never easy playing your friend, especially if that friend is

:37:06.:37:10.

in the form of his life, and that was facing Robert Elmore. He has

:37:11.:37:17.

played against and alongside Brett, and he knew that accuracy would be

:37:18.:37:21.

key. But in the first set, the defending champion took it with

:37:22.:37:24.

ease, and we join the match in the second set. Brett is 5-3 ahead.

:37:25.:37:36.

COMMENTATOR: Three more singles. We have seen it before. Certainly

:37:37.:37:49.

there. He has not played well, but he has not been put away.

:37:50.:38:20.

I think that is the best first trip Max three he has played. Two

:38:21.:38:30.

excellent liveries, back-to-back. He needs a few more to try to seek the

:38:31.:38:32.

second set. It is starting to happen now. Robert

:38:33.:39:05.

Elmore lying two. It is very accessible. And now this gets

:39:06.:39:12.

interesting because the seventh end of the nine end set. Nick scores in

:39:13.:39:19.

this end, and Robert will have to chase them for the last couple of

:39:20.:39:24.

ends, whereas if Robert scores, he is writing with a of forcing a

:39:25.:39:29.

tie-break. He is looking good again. Number three. That will force a

:39:30.:39:32.

drive. UMPIRE: Three green. This is what we

:39:33.:39:46.

were talking about, the chance to get Nicky under a little pressure

:39:47.:39:49.

here, and that is what he has done this time. He will go for the hit

:39:50.:39:54.

here. this time. He will go for the hit

:39:55.:40:41.

Furballs! A good strike right down the middle.

:40:42.:41:59.

That is the nature of sex games, you can lose the first one and just

:42:00.:42:26.

sneak over the line in the second, and it is all to play for -- sets

:42:27.:42:35.

games. Mean it comes.

:42:36.:43:52.

UMPIRE: One red. Certainly Nick would like to score a double in this

:43:53.:44:07.

end if he possibly can. Robert has to win the last two ends. He has

:44:08.:44:13.

dropped it short. It is all down to the weight, and he

:44:14.:44:43.

is witty close. Now, the difficulty from Robert is that the ideal shot

:44:44.:44:47.

would be on the backhand all the way through, take the two Reds off, or

:44:48.:44:59.

get the jack into the ditch or on the re-spot. It hasn't been shot

:45:00.:45:03.

that has desperately successful so far. He recognised the need for it.

:45:04.:45:14.

Off target. Took one out. He didn't look comfortable, he stood

:45:15.:45:38.

off to one side of the mat, wasn't sure about it. There is a proverbial

:45:39.:45:45.

country mile to draw. APPLAUSE

:45:46.:45:53.

And in he comes. UMPIRE: Two shots, Nick Brett.

:45:54.:46:04.

That was the ideal situation. He hasn't really been within a sniff of

:46:05.:46:06.

scoring three in this match. Mainly singles, couple of doubles.

:46:07.:46:20.

One of those was as a result of a drive that got a horrible result in

:46:21.:46:26.

Nicky Brett. UMPIRE: 27 metres.

:46:27.:46:38.

And if he wins it here, it will be an 11th consecutive win in Perth.

:46:39.:47:16.

This should be an excess is now in closing the end down. Get the first

:47:17.:47:31.

two bowls close and then look for cover. It is not bad. Beatable, but

:47:32.:47:35.

not bad. APPLAUSE

:47:36.:47:53.

UMPIRE: One green. Just making sure there is no way his

:47:54.:48:17.

opponent can engineer three shots. He is running the length with this,

:48:18.:48:21.

so there is a chance that if he can remember the line and length, he can

:48:22.:48:22.

add another one in. Needs to be here, but he is

:48:23.:48:41.

struggling for pace. That was a chance, and Nick knew it, as well.

:48:42.:48:47.

This will totally relax him. He can afford to play this on the forehand,

:48:48.:48:52.

actually. So there is no shoulder to come off. Not worry about losing a

:48:53.:48:56.

double. Yes, moving on the forehand for a

:48:57.:49:16.

tactical bowl. The third bowl of Robert Elmore certain he'd defused

:49:17.:49:19.

the chances of an explosive ending. Might as well just use a time-out,

:49:20.:49:46.

plenty of them available. No need to run. I don't think he has a shot

:49:47.:49:52.

available, just hit it down and hope he gets something on the runner, but

:49:53.:49:55.

I can't imagine him doing much with it. He is trying to do anything he

:49:56.:50:03.

can. He will take the single. And the defending champion is safely

:50:04.:50:08.

through. Only once in the history of this tournament has the defending

:50:09.:50:12.

champion lost in the opening round, Nicky Brett in very little danger

:50:13.:50:19.

today. And the man who is looking to repeat for the third time is

:50:20.:50:21.

currently through. The defending champion is through to

:50:22.:50:32.

round two. Nicky Brett, you must be pleased. Luckily I got a fast

:50:33.:50:40.

start, and it is crucial for me to get away to a solid start, and

:50:41.:50:44.

luckily I found a couple early. That is the thing, Robert. You are coming

:50:45.:50:49.

here and playing against a guy who has won twice, he is in the form of

:50:50.:50:54.

his life, and you don't want to let him get away. Absolutely not. It

:50:55.:51:00.

took me a while to settle down and I wasn't getting close enough, but in

:51:01.:51:03.

the second set I did settle down and got myself into the game. You

:51:04.:51:09.

certainly did. Nick, you just kept on battering away, your link from

:51:10.:51:15.

the start was very good. I know how good a player Robert is, I have

:51:16.:51:18.

played with him a lot, and a lot, and I knew eventually I would be

:51:19.:51:21.

under the pump. I just hope that I could keep him at arms length. He

:51:22.:51:27.

showed in the second set what a good day he is. He forced me into the

:51:28.:51:33.

runner. I knew it was coming, I was just hoping I could hold it off long

:51:34.:51:36.

enough. Nicky Brett looking in pretty

:51:37.:51:41.

impressive form indeed. So all the seeds were through, but could Darren

:51:42.:51:48.

Burnett join them in round two? He realised a lifetime ambition when

:51:49.:51:51.

he picked up the Commonwealth Games home -- medal on home soil. An

:51:52.:51:59.

carpet here in Perth, he has shown he has the game to do some damage.

:52:00.:52:04.

This is a rare appearance for Philip last here, but the bowler from the

:52:05.:52:10.

Ipswich indoor club has lots of experience, and came into this one

:52:11.:52:15.

44th in the world rankings. And the Commonwealth champion started very

:52:16.:52:19.

strongly indeed, and after four ends, was 5-1 ahead.

:52:20.:52:26.

COMMENTATOR: Darren Burnett off to good start. Reached around to only

:52:27.:52:33.

twice in the last ten years in Perth, it hasn't been his favourite

:52:34.:52:39.

tournament. He has been giving Philip Last a shed load of room, but

:52:40.:52:44.

Philip hasn't come onto his game at all. If he does, Darren Burnett

:52:45.:52:47.

could be in trouble. Just missed chance here, the

:52:48.:53:17.

opponent is short. You really need to be within a foot with that first

:53:18.:53:23.

bowl, in a situation like that, because obviously it is a situation

:53:24.:53:26.

where Darren isn't really on top form. He is going to make a

:53:27.:53:31.

correction, which he has done on this bowl.

:53:32.:53:54.

He certainly looks better. APPLAUSE

:53:55.:54:05.

UMPIRE: One green, but it is very close. An inch in front of jack -the

:54:06.:54:19.

green bowl, and three inches in front for your own bowl, Darren.

:54:20.:54:45.

It is important that the markers are precise. And he is there.

:54:46.:54:57.

UMPIRE: One red. He knew that the gap was there.

:54:58.:55:09.

Nicely done. A similar weighted shot from Philip Last might not get the

:55:10.:55:17.

results he wants. I am surprised that, because there was no reason to

:55:18.:55:22.

be short. Any pull off the jack was worth two or three, and the red bowl

:55:23.:55:29.

clean was worth one, possibly two. No need to draw short there. They

:55:30.:55:44.

like to play with the new grip is that they have wrought back, they

:55:45.:55:48.

were on the bowls years ago, that they went out of fashion, and they

:55:49.:55:51.

have come back into fashion again. He would have expected Darren to go

:55:52.:56:05.

behind. I think Darren expected that, too. We are seeing a lot of

:56:06.:56:12.

players dropping short. Is it playing slightly not how they are

:56:13.:56:18.

expecting? I think the back bowl would have been a good dish and the

:56:19.:56:25.

Darren. Identity he intended to be near the jack on that occasion. But

:56:26.:56:30.

I can understand it if something curls down a little, maybe coming

:56:31.:56:35.

in, people moving around on the doors being open, it can affect the

:56:36.:56:37.

pull. This is better. A really good effort. Unlucky.

:56:38.:56:54.

The second set continued in a similar vein, and the 2014 champion

:56:55.:56:59.

was through to the second round with consummate ease.

:57:00.:57:03.

Yes, lots of great games today, lots of great shots. But what was the

:57:04.:57:12.

great shot of the day? My shot of the day was between Robert Elmore

:57:13.:57:17.

and Nick Brett. Robert Elmore was in trouble, but in the second set, he

:57:18.:57:22.

couldn't afford to lose another two, and he plays the most wonderful

:57:23.:57:30.

forehand draw shot, and split two of Nicky's bowls, and suddenly Nicky is

:57:31.:57:31.

in trouble. Let's have a look. There we can see bowl coming in,

:57:32.:57:43.

perfectly weighted. A lot of people would have played the backhand

:57:44.:57:46.

runner, but he drops it in perfectly, rings the score three to

:57:47.:57:51.

5-3, and suddenly he is right back in the second shirt. -- set. And

:57:52.:57:59.

Nicky Brett had to fight all the way through the rest of that set.

:58:00.:58:04.

Yes, a beautiful shot there, but not enough to beat Nicky Brett. He is

:58:05.:58:09.

through to the second round, and here is who else is through with

:58:10.:58:10.

him. Alex Marshall against Greg Harlow,

:58:11.:58:17.

that should be a great game. Nick Brett and Stewart Anderson

:58:18.:58:27.

should also be a fantastic encounter.

:58:28.:58:33.

We will sort those matches out over the next couple of days, tomorrow we

:58:34.:58:41.
