Into the final week of the 2014 World Indoor Championships and two

:00:41.:00:48.

trophies have been won. Paul Foster and Alex Marshall succumbed to their

:00:49.:00:59.

rivals in the a mixed pairs. Yes, welcome to Potters. Two titles

:01:00.:01:17.

won. To still more are still up for grabs and this afternoon we have got

:01:18.:01:21.

action from both competitions and first up, a men's singles match

:01:22.:01:26.

featuring a Commonwealth and world champion who had to battle hard to

:01:27.:01:33.

make it through the first round. The first game was a big game for

:01:34.:01:37.

me. It was a game I had to win really. I was happy with the form. I

:01:38.:01:42.

played some good bowls there. I'm looking forward to the next game

:01:43.:01:47.

now. It is a tough draw and it is a tough game. Stewart Anderson played

:01:48.:01:51.

really well in the first game as well. It probably doesn't get much

:01:52.:01:58.

tougher. Stewart has a great all-round game, but his drawing to

:01:59.:02:01.

the jack. He seems to get a lot of bowls around the jack and put

:02:02.:02:10.

pressure on the opponent. I find myself enjoying the games under

:02:11.:02:14.

pressure. I will maybe play a few drives and see what happens.

:02:15.:02:18.

APPLAUSE It has probably been too long since

:02:19.:02:22.

Wales lifted this trophy. Last time it was myself in 2000. Hopefully one

:02:23.:02:32.

of us can do it this year. We have great memories and a long time ago,

:02:33.:02:36.

but I have kept my form over the years and form is temporary

:02:37.:02:41.

probably, but the class is there. I still think I can do it and

:02:42.:02:49.

hopefully I'm going to prove that. Well, to prove it, he is up against

:02:50.:02:55.

none other than the defending champion, Stewart Anderson is

:02:56.:02:58.

standing in the way of Robert Weale in the last 16 match. I have been

:02:59.:03:05.

joined by John Price. Another former Welsh world champion. Stewart

:03:06.:03:08.

Anderson has come into this tournament as the defending

:03:09.:03:13.

champion. The last two defending champions went out in the first

:03:14.:03:18.

round? Yes, he will be relieved by that. Today's opponent is very

:03:19.:03:21.

experienced so he needs to go up a level and I expect to see a tough

:03:22.:03:24.

match. About today's opponent, Rob, you

:03:25.:03:27.

know Rob very well. He hasn't been at his best. He had that injury

:03:28.:03:32.

playing skittles which set him back. How much did that first round win

:03:33.:03:39.

give him a boost? A dangerous game skittles. He is back to his best. He

:03:40.:03:44.

will get a lot of confidence and he has been here and done it before and

:03:45.:03:48.

he is a top player. You are going to be in the commentary box this

:03:49.:03:51.

afternoon. Who is going to come out on top? Well, that's unfair with a

:03:52.:03:55.

Welshman there. It will be close. It could go one set to a tie-break.

:03:56.:04:00.

Because I'm Welsh I'm going to favour Robert. No surprise there!

:04:01.:04:05.

Thank you, John, I will let you go up to the commentary box. Robert

:04:06.:04:13.

Weale is up against Stewart Anderson.

:04:14.:04:55.

Stewart Anderson. APPLAUSE

:04:56.:05:01.

Well, yes, it is time to meet the players and after winning countless

:05:02.:05:05.

Commonwealth Games gold medals, it is no wonder why our first player is

:05:06.:05:10.

rated as one of the best in the sport. Ladies and gentlemen, former

:05:11.:05:16.

World Indoor Singles Champion. Give it up for Robert Weale.

:05:17.:05:27.

And Robert takes on twice world under 25s and the defending World

:05:28.:05:48.

Indoor Singles Champion, ladies and gentlemen, it's Stewart Anderson.

:05:49.:05:59.

Well, this a cracking match and John Price has printed up into the

:06:00.:06:23.

commentary box. I will give John a moment or two to

:06:24.:06:33.

get his breath. He is not as fit as he used to be. He is panting away.

:06:34.:06:38.

He needs a little drink. You will be OK in a moment, John. We're really

:06:39.:06:42.

looking forward to this. Robert Weale hovering at the top end, top

:06:43.:06:55.

16. He has been around a long time, Robert Weale. Great success indoors

:06:56.:07:06.

and outdoors. But Stewart Anderson is some 20 odd years younger. He is

:07:07.:07:12.

one of the new breed. Very, very good draw shot player.

:07:13.:07:42.

So two sets, nine ends. Three end tie-break if required.

:07:43.:07:58.

The shot clock will be in play. 30 seconds to play the bowl. Four

:07:59.:08:05.

time-outs in the first two sets with an extra one come the tie-break, but

:08:06.:08:10.

you can carry the time-outs into the tie-break if you need to do so.

:08:11.:08:16.

Robert needs to put five or six feet on his last bowl.

:08:17.:08:23.

He doesn't really want to offer Stewart Anderson the opportunity of

:08:24.:08:29.

lying two or three shots in the first end, John. No, that's right.

:08:30.:08:35.

One of the points I would make, but if Stewart gets out of the blocks

:08:36.:08:38.

fast he can blow you away very, very quickly. He needs to stick in there.

:08:39.:08:57.

Robert might be tempted to have a go at this. There is no easy draw in.

:08:58.:09:06.

It is not an easy strike either. There is nothing really inviting

:09:07.:09:11.

there, Dave. I would have thought if he was going to draw this, he would

:09:12.:09:15.

have moved to the forehand. A little tap on his bowl, but he wants to

:09:16.:09:19.

make the correction. Another foot or so.

:09:20.:09:25.

Players really don't like to have to play the running bowl first end.

:09:26.:09:36.

They want to get into a rhythm. He has got second out of that. Well, it

:09:37.:09:39.

is confirmed as two red. Stewart Anderson just trotting up as

:09:40.:09:49.

the clock ticks down to ten seconds. Well, there is still that little

:09:50.:10:35.

half-running shot, but he was very close for the draw on the backhand.

:10:36.:10:41.

Yeah, I think he will stick with it, Dave. Well, there we go. He is

:10:42.:10:47.

playing the runner in the forehand. He is trying to get on to his own

:10:48.:10:55.

bowl. Oh dear, unlucky. It doesn't make any difference. Still the two

:10:56.:10:59.

shots. APPLAUSE

:11:00.:11:18.

Stewart Anderson has been involved in the Scottish elite squad for the

:11:19.:11:27.

Commonwealth Games later this year in Glasgow. And it is bringing

:11:28.:11:38.

another complication for the coach as to who he is going to select in

:11:39.:11:46.

the key position for the singles. But Stewart by his own admission

:11:47.:11:52.

hasn't really got an outdoor CV that would compare with some of the

:11:53.:11:58.

others. No, I would be surprised if Stewart made the singles team. The

:11:59.:12:05.

man on the mat will be defending his Commonwealth title, that's Robert

:12:06.:12:07.

Weale. Won gold in India. This is a tidy little head of bowls.

:12:08.:13:11.

Robert needs to pass the red and that will help. A clean jack would

:13:12.:13:14.

have been better, but second-best. Just a little bit over weight. A

:13:15.:13:55.

good spot at the back there. Robert could lie a very good three.

:13:56.:14:00.

He needs to move the jack a few inches. Is he going to run? A good

:14:01.:14:12.

try. Yes, that's good bowling though. Both players now finding the

:14:13.:14:19.

range. We are just on the second end.

:14:20.:14:48.

He needs to just hurry. Oh, it has dropped away. Yeah, it is a good

:14:49.:15:00.

second. It makes it difficult for Robert to get in there. He certainly

:15:01.:15:03.

can't get on to the jack on the front end of the jack anyway, Dave.

:15:04.:15:08.

He doesn't want to sit back on it so he has got a problem here. Push the

:15:09.:15:22.

red bowl out on the wide line and let it drift back in again. Down to

:15:23.:15:27.

two seconds on that delivery. I don't think he would be terribly

:15:28.:15:31.

worried about it. Yes, that's why he is on the high side. Understandably,

:15:32.:15:35.

take the single. This is a wonderful arena at Potters

:15:36.:15:58.

Leisure Resort. We hope to see a big crowd in as usual. Fantastic

:15:59.:16:05.

facility for offices behind the rink which houses the press, the players

:16:06.:16:11.

lounge and the director's office and of course, we're up here.

:16:12.:16:20.

We are right behind the rink. A super view. Well, Robert is just

:16:21.:16:31.

struggling in the early ends in this direction. The first bowl was short

:16:32.:16:36.

and it is well down the green again. He will be aware, David, he doesn't

:16:37.:16:40.

want to leave too much space for that first bowl because Stewart is

:16:41.:16:48.

so monotonous. He really is a good frontrunner.

:16:49.:17:17.

APPLAUSE And that's a good correction. You

:17:18.:17:21.

are right John, Stewart Anderson once he gets into a rhythm he is

:17:22.:17:28.

very, very hard to put down. He really can't afford to drop short

:17:29.:17:31.

bowls. I can see what the intention was to

:17:32.:18:08.

drop on to the red bowl. He just overplayed it.

:18:09.:18:31.

Well, he hasn't made the correction. He is certainly arriving at the jack

:18:32.:18:37.

or the bowl, but any weight at all and you're going to struggle to get

:18:38.:18:43.

back. Robert switched sides, back on to the backhand side. Yes, I think

:18:44.:18:48.

he was surprised he was just so heavy with the previous bowl. But

:18:49.:18:52.

this has a bit of work to do. Here it comes. Not really.

:18:53.:18:59.

I wonder would Stewart Anderson be tempted with a little runner here on

:19:00.:19:05.

the inside line? He might get the two bowls and just draw it and try

:19:06.:19:11.

and turn the jack. The saving grace for Robert is that short bowl is

:19:12.:19:17.

covering the two greens. He is down on the inside line to try and get

:19:18.:19:21.

the two green bowls. A bit of work to do for this to get back to them.

:19:22.:19:32.

Close. Well, he managed to get one. A very good effort. Very controlled

:19:33.:19:35.

weight. Stewart Anderson's dad, Billy, is

:19:36.:19:59.

get Is his place on the front row. He comes to the events to give young

:20:00.:20:01.

Stewart support. It is a good start by Robert. This

:20:02.:20:33.

is what he needs to do. Just ask a few questions of Stewart.

:20:34.:20:47.

This is a great reply. When your opposition gets one so close, you

:20:48.:21:01.

are just delighted to be within five or six inches yourself. That's a

:21:02.:21:07.

good second by Stewart. That's a descent start to the game. Both

:21:08.:21:11.

players finding good weight, good line.

:21:12.:21:16.

That's the right idea from Rob if you're going to play that, make sure

:21:17.:21:21.

you're reaching up to the shot bowl. If you miss it, you come around

:21:22.:21:23.

behind. Well, this has got a chance. Well,

:21:24.:22:07.

that's beautiful. That really brings his back bowl into now. That's a

:22:08.:22:13.

receiver. Yes, he couldn't have put this anywhere better. A brilliant

:22:14.:22:18.

bowl. Using weight, Stewart Anderson. He is looking for a

:22:19.:22:25.

connection. Well, that's good. Opened it up, Dave. Well, it is one

:22:26.:22:32.

bowl singles now. He got a good solid contact. The jack has popped

:22:33.:22:37.

down into the ditch. The green bowl will lie. There is a mountain of

:22:38.:22:46.

room there. It is going to be hard to get close to t John, but he will

:22:47.:22:51.

have to go down the narrow side. Yeah, distance isn't a problem, of

:22:52.:22:55.

course, it is the space you have got on the board. The jack is well

:22:56.:23:00.

across to the corner of the rink. Robert's not flirting too much with

:23:01.:23:02.

the side ditch. That's pretty good. It is beatable,

:23:03.:23:16.

but it is a descent bowl. The difficulty for Stewart here is that

:23:17.:23:20.

he has got three shots against him and he cannot afford to really flirt

:23:21.:23:24.

with the ditch. He may play the conservative shot. Yeah, he doesn't

:23:25.:23:30.

want to be too over ambitious. You drop in a loose three. Second is

:23:31.:23:37.

first priority. If he does beat the green bowl, it is a bonus. It is

:23:38.:23:45.

going to be on the edge if anything. There it is. That's a confident man.

:23:46.:23:54.

He is confident in his ability. A lot of players would have dropped

:23:55.:23:58.

that bowl four or five feet short and would have been happy with

:23:59.:24:05.

second, but not Stewart Anderson. Excellent recovery. Hit and draw.

:24:06.:24:18.

There is Greg Harlow and his wife Kay. They are enjoying the game.

:24:19.:24:24.

Greg playing later today. These two players, could have, David

:24:25.:25:10.

will know each other very well because Stewart played for a couple

:25:11.:25:16.

of seasons down in Wales and was a member of Robert Weale's indoor club

:25:17.:25:24.

so they have probably played with and against each other on a number

:25:25.:25:31.

of occasions so nothing new there. And Robert's game going very well.

:25:32.:25:37.

Yes and somewhat different priorities for both players. Stewart

:25:38.:25:42.

Anderson defending champion, of course, but well up the ranking list

:25:43.:25:48.

and Robert Weale hovering at number 16. So a little bit of pressure

:25:49.:25:53.

there. In a way I think Robert was unmore

:25:54.:26:00.

pressure in that front -- under more pressure. Stewart is the bookies

:26:01.:26:03.

favourite for this one, but Robert has got so much experience and he

:26:04.:26:09.

will know being under dog might suit him. But saying that, you have got

:26:10.:26:13.

to be able to play the bowls and he won't be happy with that.

:26:14.:26:18.

Yes, all the players below Robert Weale on the provisional list, Simon

:26:19.:26:26.

Skelton, all the players that could have bounced up in front of him have

:26:27.:26:33.

gone. So at worst I reckon he will stay at number 16.

:26:34.:26:42.

Robert is too experienced David, I think, to let that worry him. You

:26:43.:26:55.

can't come on the green worrying about your ranking position. You

:26:56.:27:00.

sort of tighten up and don't play your normal game. You have got to

:27:01.:27:03.

relax and just play a normal game of bowls. That's easier said than done!

:27:04.:27:12.

Stewart is not too happy with that. Well, he is not that far away. A lot

:27:13.:27:56.

of head shaking on that one, Dave. He thought that one was well away.

:27:57.:28:07.

Well, there is nothing easy for Robert here. It just has to be a

:28:08.:28:12.

clean draw. If he drops it out, he could be in with a chance of a two

:28:13.:28:17.

or three. That's the sort of aim, just draw to that back red bowl. It

:28:18.:28:30.

is a big line there. The weight will have to be good on that line. Now,

:28:31.:28:40.

he just overplayed it and disappointing really from Robert.

:28:41.:28:49.

Well, certainly not big scoring, five ends played, a total of six

:28:50.:28:56.

shots scored. Stewart Anderson two up. There is plenty of time for both

:28:57.:29:02.

players. You might say it is cagey at the

:29:03.:29:07.

moment, David, rather than spectacular. Yes, it is a steady

:29:08.:29:16.

game. It hasn't really livened up. Both players staying away from the

:29:17.:29:19.

running bowls. It is a chance to try and tidy up.

:29:20.:32:58.

He needs to try and have a go at this.

:32:59.:33:16.

Try and push it through. The short ball might come into play. There is

:33:17.:33:33.

lots of options there. He is resisting the temptation of

:33:34.:33:56.

looking at the drawing line. He's playing it back hand, underneath the

:33:57.:33:58.

short balls. -- bowls. It is his personal preference. I

:33:59.:34:24.

think it was the right shots to play. He needs to change is part a

:34:25.:34:33.

little bit. I think you have to play weird shots to shake things up

:34:34.:34:38.

sometimes. I talked to Rob at last week about the injury he had. --

:34:39.:34:47.

Robert. He said he was not quite as confident as he would have liked to

:34:48.:34:50.

have been. A bit of stress on the leg.

:34:51.:36:03.

APPLAUSE. Stewart locked in behind the first bowl. He needs to up his

:36:04.:36:28.

game a little bit. He is not reaching with this.

:36:29.:36:49.

Very intelligent bowling from Stewart. It will be a bonus if he

:36:50.:37:00.

gets another shot. He gets another shot. He's not too worried.

:37:01.:37:40.

He was persevering with the draw shot.

:37:41.:38:10.

It is easy action from Stewart Anderson. Good, consistent weight

:38:11.:38:31.

with every bowl. And I think he was looking for the green. I think

:38:32.:38:38.

Robert will have to look at hitting this now. Nothing much on the draw

:38:39.:38:39.

bear. He has no choice. He has to play

:38:40.:38:55.

through this. Hope for a good result. He is narrow. That is

:38:56.:39:13.

virtually the first set,. -- that is virtually the first set gone.

:39:14.:40:11.

The question was, coming into this, has he played enough bowls to match

:40:12.:40:24.

Stewart? Stewart Anderson has played a lot of competitive matches.

:40:25.:41:09.

It puts a lot of pressure on your opponent when you were surrounding

:41:10.:41:12.

the jack. He is looking to make a slight

:41:13.:41:48.

correction on his previous delivery. He is in the area. He needs a double

:41:49.:42:07.

to continue into the last end. I can't see Robert getting any more

:42:08.:42:57.

than one out of this. Stewart is very tactically astute.

:42:58.:43:36.

He's a great player. Very calm, considered. I have got to say, he is

:43:37.:43:43.

at the top of his game at the moment and he is certainly the man to beat.

:43:44.:43:56.

Robert Weale played some good bowls, but Stewart was really doing

:43:57.:44:15.

what he does best, John. Putting the pressure on his opponent. I felt

:44:16.:44:23.

Robert had a chance, but I am a bit worried now because he needed to

:44:24.:44:31.

start one. Stewart has control of the match, and it will be very

:44:32.:44:34.

difficult for him now. Very difficult. It is not over until the

:44:35.:44:39.

fat lady sings, David. He has been allowed a little bit too

:44:40.:46:43.

much space. Ten inches away. Ten inches is

:46:44.:46:51.

pretty good. There he goes. It is a highly trained working dog,

:46:52.:48:00.

actually. I think the dog, like Robert, is a

:48:01.:49:03.

bit too relaxed at the moment. He needs to do something.

:49:04.:50:23.

Alarm bells are ringing for Robert Weale.

:50:24.:51:05.

He was looking at the angle. Players have learned how to use it to their

:51:06.:51:31.

advantage. They just have to get back in time.

:51:32.:51:46.

I don't think he is comfortable using weight at the moment.

:51:47.:52:15.

Stewart will take advantage of every opportunity. He is trying to keep

:52:16.:52:30.

the scoreboard ticking over. Towards the respot position. That should be

:52:31.:52:31.

close enough. Robert is being careful. He is

:52:32.:52:48.

looking at whether the jack will bounce. If it bounces, it could come

:52:49.:52:57.

off in the respot. He can't afford to be wide here.

:52:58.:53:05.

He doesn't need a lot of weight on the indoor surface, though.

:53:06.:53:20.

That full crotch delivery is not helping. -- that full crouched

:53:21.:53:26.

delivery is not helping. He felt he was ready to come back. I

:53:27.:54:30.

reckon he is about 70%. I do not think he is fully fit yet. It was a

:54:31.:54:33.

nasty hamstring injury. As Robert is not hitting well, he

:54:34.:55:47.

has sort of relaxed a little bit. Now he has decided to take a few

:55:48.:55:50.

risks, put the pressure on. He's playing some decent balls. --

:55:51.:55:59.

he's playing some decent bowls. Dropping short, but look where it

:56:00.:56:34.

has finished. I don't think he would have expected to be this far clear

:56:35.:56:35.

at this stage. That's short bowl forced Robert out

:56:36.:57:00.

a little bit. He is getting somebody you out of it. -- he's getting some

:57:01.:57:15.

value out of it. The problem is the weight control is not good enough.

:57:16.:57:39.

Any extension on the jack and he was good. It was close.

:57:40.:58:50.

is going to be really difficult. He's much too classy give that away.

:58:51.:58:57.

He will be thinking this is damage limitation for Robert. That is about

:58:58.:59:05.

as good as it is going to get at the moment. Just relax, and hope it gets

:59:06.:59:13.

better. One loose one. The second one is

:59:14.:00:17.

adjusted. There is still a chance for Robert

:00:18.:00:21.

to get in. He hasn't had too many really good touchers. Oh, this is

:00:22.:00:38.

struggling for weight. It is just not happening.

:00:39.:00:48.

It is really difficult to see him getting back into this unless he can

:00:49.:00:51.

lift his game. It is not great from Stewart, but it

:00:52.:01:05.

is blocking the way in from the striking area.

:01:06.:01:21.

A loose end. He is very quick on the delivery. The head is coming up and

:01:22.:01:24.

he doesn't seem to have a feel for the carpet this afternoon.

:01:25.:02:08.

Well, there is still a bit of room. That would be a very loose two at

:02:09.:02:15.

this level. He got that one away a little bit

:02:16.:02:28.

better, Robert. It is all about pace on that line. He has to negotiate

:02:29.:02:35.

his own front ball. A solid connection would help. It is a good

:02:36.:02:40.

weight, but he will take everything he can.

:02:41.:02:49.

APPLAUSE He needed that, Robert. He will be

:02:50.:02:55.

relieved to get on to the card in this set.

:02:56.:04:06.

At the moment Robert is not playing well. He needs to take advantage of

:04:07.:04:14.

that. He needs a three to get him back into the set. It is a little

:04:15.:04:26.

bit better, but not enough to keep Stewart out and the difficulty is

:04:27.:04:30.

John, when you go walkabout like this, it is hard to find a way back

:04:31.:04:34.

and especially if you have got an injury because you have a tendency

:04:35.:04:37.

to fall back on that a little bit and be careful with it. But I think

:04:38.:04:41.

the opposition is the problem here. Stewart Anderson is so consistent.

:04:42.:04:48.

Yes, Stewart is. You know Stewart is going to play a better second bowl

:04:49.:04:51.

then. At this level of bowls, certainly

:04:52.:05:03.

from the last 16 onwards you have got to be at your best. Mediocre

:05:04.:05:07.

doesn't win you this championship. It can happen to anybody. If you get

:05:08.:05:11.

an off day, you are it blown off the rink. It is a fact of life at top

:05:12.:05:16.

level sport. Yes, there is no way back from that situation, but I

:05:17.:05:19.

always think when it is going pear-shaped like this, when you try

:05:20.:05:23.

and shake things up, you start and play running balls with your

:05:24.:05:26.

secretary delivery, it -- second delivery, it may go wrong, but it is

:05:27.:05:29.

only about have you got the opportunity to do that? There is no

:05:30.:05:34.

running shot this end from Robert, he has to draw it and the way he is

:05:35.:05:44.

going, well that's not going to happen. Stewart plays a poor first

:05:45.:05:52.

bowl. He gets the second bowl in. The third bowl is coming in behind

:05:53.:05:58.

the jack. There is no target. Robert can't run at anything here. He just

:05:59.:06:02.

has to try and draw within an inch of the jack. It has been a while

:06:03.:06:05.

since he managed to do that. Well, he is down on a good line

:06:06.:06:37.

here. Will it get back in time? Just struggling a bit. That's a good

:06:38.:06:47.

effort. Stewart doesn't really need to be too ambitious here. The old

:06:48.:06:56.

high line drift. A really comfortable position in this match.

:06:57.:07:03.

He can see it out now. Well, he will keep his

:07:04.:07:06.

concentration. He realises he is no the over the line yet. One big ball

:07:07.:07:11.

from Robert Weale will act like a switch from him. He wants to keep

:07:12.:07:15.

the pressure on. He wants to keep scoring. That's a good effort.

:07:16.:07:30.

You must keep operating. One more shot really for Stewart

:07:31.:07:34.

Anderson will make it relax a little bit and keep it tight for the next

:07:35.:07:39.

end and he should be through to the quarter-finals.

:07:40.:08:50.

Well, there is always one, isn't there?

:08:51.:08:58.

Yes, I have got the Swansea up here as well. A season ticket, John

:08:59.:09:09.

Price. That canary is looking as sad as our swans are at the moment.

:09:10.:09:15.

That's what I was thinking. I think you will both be safe. I wouldn't

:09:16.:09:20.

bank on that. You don't know much about football, David. That's true!

:09:21.:09:30.

Oh Robert. That is not what we expect from you. No.

:09:31.:09:41.

You have got to say Stewart played well, bhu really he -- but really he

:09:42.:09:51.

had very little to do. Nothing is coming back the other way. He is

:09:52.:10:00.

playing really well. He has just been relentless Stewart Anderson and

:10:01.:10:06.

Rob, well he just hasn't been at his best. He has been forced into these

:10:07.:10:11.

running balls which he feels incredibly uncomfortable playing.

:10:12.:10:22.

I think that's sensible, get the time-out. It won't look any better

:10:23.:10:27.

when he gets up the top end. It is a really nasty line. Not much of a

:10:28.:10:31.

target there, Dave. Look at the green bowls, they are little

:10:32.:10:37.

policemen down the rink. Well, even if you are playing really well to

:10:38.:10:42.

filter through those bowls and get to the red would be a tremendous

:10:43.:10:47.

shot. The forehand, he has been pushing it out wide on the last

:10:48.:10:48.

couple of occasions. Once again, Robert Weale facing a

:10:49.:10:57.

difficult position. He was a good ball wide from the

:10:58.:11:15.

target he was after and on a day like this, that's going to happen.

:11:16.:11:21.

Stewart is just having a bit of a laugh on the way past because

:11:22.:11:24.

whenever you get to this stage in the match, John, you sort of banter,

:11:25.:11:29.

don't you, because you know it has all gone? Well, it has certainly

:11:30.:11:36.

gone pear-shaped for Robert. He is taking solace with Sandra, the

:11:37.:11:43.

umpire. He is probably saying to Sandra, "Go down and play the last

:11:44.:11:47.

bowl for me." It looks like it could be number four and that would be a

:11:48.:11:52.

situation that Robert plays his last ball and misses, it is going to be

:11:53.:11:58.

all over. Oh, it is in front as well. That's a

:11:59.:12:03.

cracking bowl. Deliberate or not, that's a cracking ball right in

:12:04.:12:09.

front. Stewart is just smiling there.

:12:10.:12:16.

APPLAUSE A time-out. Why not? When you get to

:12:17.:12:36.

fours, 13-1. So there is no way back from that.

:12:37.:12:41.

The best he can do is score three fours which there is no chance of

:12:42.:12:43.

happening. Well, he is going for it. It looks

:12:44.:12:57.

lying he is better -- like he is better, but it still looks a bit on

:12:58.:13:03.

the wide side. Yes, the last bowl of Stewart's was good.

:13:04.:13:06.

Three shots to Stewart Anderson. 12-1 after six. A nasty reading from

:13:07.:13:33.

Wales? It is surprising bearing in mind Robert didn't play badly in his

:13:34.:13:37.

first round. I think Stewart has played very very well, but you know,

:13:38.:13:42.

I just felt he lost control of the match in that first set, the back

:13:43.:13:47.

end of that set and he never recovered. Yes, from 5 had -2,

:13:48.:13:52.

really losing the three and the two and that sort of set the tone.

:13:53.:13:54.

Stewart got better and Robert has fallen off even more. Well, he has

:13:55.:13:58.

fallen off really badly and in the set and you would expect a bit more

:13:59.:14:02.

and that's not a criticism. Robert is a top champion. He is very, very

:14:03.:14:06.

experienced and a good player, but he hasn't been at the races today.

:14:07.:14:10.

It can happen to anybody, but it is a bad place to happen on the

:14:11.:14:14.

portable rink in the World Championships and it is unfortunate.

:14:15.:14:21.

That takes nothing away from Stewart's performance.

:14:22.:14:46.

This is looking good again. Pops it in there. There we go. It is just

:14:47.:14:53.

relentless. Well, with Robert Weale you just have to sit back and admire

:14:54.:14:56.

it. He hasn't been on form todayks but all credit to Stewart Anderson

:14:57.:14:58.

for keeping his concentration. The crowd are encouraging this bowl

:14:59.:15:16.

forward. Once again, just falling short of a good bowl.

:15:17.:15:41.

I think we are at the exhibition level now. He is on autopilot, isn't

:15:42.:15:51.

he? Sandra is enjoying the banter with Stewart, but it is all over. We

:15:52.:15:59.

know that. Robert is turning his back on this.

:16:00.:16:04.

And really it has all gone. Well, I think it is over this end

:16:05.:16:26.

happen. It happens to all of us. It has happened certainly in the past

:16:27.:16:31.

and for me anyway, but you just sometimes go out there. You don't

:16:32.:16:35.

find it. Your opposition is decorating the jack and it just goes

:16:36.:16:40.

wrong. Just shake their hands and say all the very best. Good luck.

:16:41.:16:48.

Oh, look at this. There we go. Number four. Oh dear, oh dear.

:16:49.:16:57.

That's it Robert, just drop it down there. He is experienced to know

:16:58.:17:04.

this is a one off match. Oh, he is looking at it coming back to the

:17:05.:17:09.

jack. Is it going to make it? Oh, I don't believe it. There you go. He

:17:10.:17:15.

gets the last big cheer, Robert Weale.

:17:16.:17:20.

APPLAUSE It is one of these things, it

:17:21.:17:25.

happens, but Robert Weale just had a tough day at the office. Stewart

:17:26.:17:29.

Anderson takes the first set 10-2 and the second 12-2.

:17:30.:17:34.

Defending champion cruises his way into the quarter-final and does so

:17:35.:17:38.

in some style. So Robert Weale's efforts just to

:17:39.:17:55.

save things, but missed in the last, well at the eighth end.

:17:56.:18:02.

Once again Stewart Anderson just showing how well he has been

:18:03.:18:17.

drawing. Pops another one in. Very little coming back his way. Stewart

:18:18.:18:21.

Anderson taking full advantage by dropping another one in front. He

:18:22.:18:26.

takes a three at that end to go 12-1 and it was just all too easy for the

:18:27.:18:29.

defending champion today. The stats will show that. Ends won

:18:30.:18:36.

11-4. The average shots per end, well it was double. Look at the

:18:37.:18:43.

total shots scored, 22-4. Now, we wouldn't have thought that would

:18:44.:18:46.

have happened in this match. It was just Stewart Anderson on top form

:18:47.:18:50.

and Robert Weale just suffering a little bit.

:18:51.:18:58.

A majestic performance from Stewart Anderson. How do you feel you

:18:59.:19:04.

played? I was really pleased with my performance. It was another step up

:19:05.:19:07.

from the first round because I was really nervous in the first round

:19:08.:19:11.

and I just settled into my game and enjoyed it. Rob wasn't at his best

:19:12.:19:12.

and he struggled to be at enjoyed it. Rob wasn't at his best

:19:13.:19:21.

title, how do you feel that's going? Well, in a way I feel for Robert

:19:22.:19:25.

because Robert came through a lot of injuries and I do put my hands up to

:19:26.:19:30.

Robert and he will be back stronger. I have to keep it going. You can't

:19:31.:19:34.

let it slip away because you know he will come back strong. The way you

:19:35.:19:38.

played today, people will find it hard to think that you could get

:19:39.:19:42.

better. Do you feel you could get better? Yes, I think I can get

:19:43.:19:48.

better every performance. I play against my opponent, that's all I

:19:49.:19:53.

do. Well, you did a pretty good job. You are through to the

:19:54.:19:58.

quarter-finals. Well done. Let's look at how the last 16 are shaping

:19:59.:20:05.

up. Stewart Anderson is through. Greg Harlow is to play Darren

:20:06.:20:11.

Burnett later this evening. There is lots more to come here at

:20:12.:20:38.

Potters. Here is how you can follow the bowls on the BBC.

BBC bowls and don't forget to follow the BBC Sport website for the latest

:21:14.:21:20.

news. The World Championships are well

:21:21.:21:24.

underway here at Potters. Tomorrow, we are on the Red Button at 10am for

:21:25.:21:30.

Andy Thomson against John Price. That's round two. Both men the

:21:31.:21:37.

senior men in the tournament. 58 Andy Thomson against 53-year-old

:21:38.:21:41.

John Price. Both are former champions. Tomorrow afternoon, it is

:21:42.:21:46.

the ladies final and that's at 1pm on BBC Two. So the World

:21:47.:21:50.

Championships are progressing, but it is an important year for the

:21:51.:21:54.

sport with the little matter of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:21:55.:22:02.

2014 is a bumper year in the sport of bowls. As well as the World

:22:03.:22:05.

Indoor Championships, several bowlers are looking forward to the

:22:06.:22:08.

Commonwealth Games where the sport will be one of the most popular

:22:09.:22:15.

events. We met up with some of the potential home nation participants.

:22:16.:22:19.

The Scottish team for Glasgow will not be finalised until March, but

:22:20.:22:25.

the depth of talent presents a fob for the head coach and selector. As

:22:26.:22:33.

well as many high cla out door specialist, David can call on the he

:22:34.:22:44.

2013 world singles champion, Stewart Anderson. Former Welsh Open winner

:22:45.:22:51.

Darren Burnett is in the mix. So the coach has big decisions ahead.

:22:52.:22:57.

Scotland is blessed with having a huge talent pool. That's where the

:22:58.:23:01.

selection process is key and really important. So from the very

:23:02.:23:08.

beginning we is the out a -- we set out a selection criteria. It is a

:23:09.:23:11.

challenge, but it is a good challenge to have.

:23:12.:23:20.

David is still a high ranking player on the circuit himself. How

:23:21.:23:28.

difficult is to remove himself from the friendships of the bowls

:23:29.:23:32.

community? In many ways, it is a good thing because it gives me an

:23:33.:23:37.

insight to the guys. I get to know, you know, how good, they are in form

:23:38.:23:41.

at any time. I know their strengths and weaknesses. I have grown up with

:23:42.:23:46.

a lot of these guys. In many ways, I think it is an advantage rather than

:23:47.:23:49.

a disadvantage. We have got to separate, you know,

:23:50.:23:55.

your emotions from selecting the team. I always said I would select

:23:56.:23:59.

the best team as if my life depended upon it and the guys know it, but

:24:00.:24:02.

the backing I have got from other players has been amazing. Being

:24:03.:24:06.

centre stage and Scotland will be a special moment for the most seasoned

:24:07.:24:15.

bowls campaigners. Foster and Marshall have won pretty much

:24:16.:24:18.

everything in the game, but this summer will have the adrenalin

:24:19.:24:22.

pumping like never before. The Commonwealth Games in Scotland will

:24:23.:24:24.

be huge. Everybody is talking about it now. There is still a couple of

:24:25.:24:34.

months left to see who gets selected. There is plenty of guys in

:24:35.:24:38.

the mix. We will see what happens. You can't get a bigger spectacle

:24:39.:24:46.

than playing the Commonwealth Games in your own country. If I get to

:24:47.:24:52.

play, I will come away with a medal, but gold would be icing on the cake.

:24:53.:25:03.

It would be a great achievement for myself to get into the first

:25:04.:25:08.

Commonwealth and the expectation and all the players will be so high and

:25:09.:25:14.

really looking forward to it. The top quality facilities sit at

:25:15.:25:18.

the heart of Glasgow City centre and in the shadow of the impressive

:25:19.:25:23.

museum and art gallery building. Come July, this location will be

:25:24.:25:27.

packed with home support. It is a great stage to show case the sport.

:25:28.:25:36.

Where is the stand going to be? It is going to be bigger. They are

:25:37.:25:42.

going to have a stand up there and there will be seats around here. How

:25:43.:25:49.

many people sf 5,000. It is going to be amazing. This venue is probably

:25:50.:25:57.

the best bowling venue I have ever been to anywhere in the world and

:25:58.:26:01.

even coming here today in January, it gives you goose bumps when you

:26:02.:26:05.

look at architecture and the history of this place. We are in the heart

:26:06.:26:09.

of Glasgow here and we have got six bowling greens. It is amazing. The

:26:10.:26:13.

support we will get from the Scottish public will be incredible.

:26:14.:26:17.

So we're really looking forward to it. Obviously the home support, they

:26:18.:26:22.

will have high expectations of the Scottish team because we have done

:26:23.:26:32.

so well in other years. We are in the firing line. Those who get

:26:33.:26:35.

picked, there will be added pressure on because everybody knows Scotland

:26:36.:26:42.

is a top, top nation at bowls. This is our Olympics. The strongest

:26:43.:26:45.

nations in the world will be competing in the Commonwealth Games

:26:46.:26:48.

at bowls. That's not necessarily true for all sports, but it is true

:26:49.:26:52.

for bowls. In many respects, we are still considered a minority sport

:26:53.:26:57.

even though we are probably the second biggest sport and governing

:26:58.:27:02.

body in the UK. This is a shop window for our sport and if these

:27:03.:27:06.

guys win any medals, they will be national heroes overnight.

:27:07.:27:11.

The 2014 World Championship wasn't the best week from a playing point

:27:12.:27:17.

of view for David, but he will be keeping a close eye on the

:27:18.:27:23.

performances of his elite team squad members. A win at Potters would do

:27:24.:27:28.

no harm at all! Well, a man with experience of the

:27:29.:27:33.

Commonwealth Games is David Corkhill who has joined me. Corky, just

:27:34.:27:38.

explain for the life of a bowler in the year there is the World

:27:39.:27:45.

Championships and the Commonwealth Games, how important is that? It is

:27:46.:27:48.

multi-sport. You are part of a large organisation and there is different

:27:49.:27:51.

demands upon it as well. It only comes around once every four years

:27:52.:27:55.

as well. Scotland in particular had a monumental disaster in India and

:27:56.:28:00.

they have brought in David. That steadied the ship. A good

:28:01.:28:04.

appointment and they are going to be, well I would say they are a

:28:05.:28:08.

target of two medal. Four or five they might be on for. Reflecting on

:28:09.:28:14.

the match that we have seen, the Commonwealth Games champion, Robert

:28:15.:28:22.

Weale, way below his performance this afternoon. How good was Stewart

:28:23.:28:26.

Anderson? Well, Stewart was excellent today. The difficulty for

:28:27.:28:32.

players when your opponent isn't playing well is concentration.

:28:33.:28:37.

Robert will be disappointed. He did his best. He has a few ranking

:28:38.:28:41.

points. But he will be fit for the Commonwealth Games and that will

:28:42.:28:45.

make a difference. Alison Merrien is taking on Katherine Rednall. Let's

:28:46.:28:52.

take a look at the ladies semifinal line-up. Rebecca Field against Julie

:28:53.:29:01.

Forrest from Scotland. Katherine Rednall is taking on

:29:02.:29:04.

Alison Merrien. That's our next match on BBC Two. It is time to get

:29:05.:29:08.

things going with our MC. Well, making her WBT debut

:29:09.:29:13.

appearance this year is this young 18-year-old from Suffolk, the 2012

:29:14.:29:19.

national Champion of Champions, ladies and gentlemen, Katherine

:29:20.:29:22.

Rednall. Now to a lady with many world titles

:29:23.:29:50.

to her credit. Last year's finalist and the 2011ed ladies match play

:29:51.:29:56.

champion, your appreciation please for Alison Merrien, MBE.

:29:57.:30:04.

Fascinating game in front of others. Katherine Rednall is a prodigious

:30:05.:30:48.

talent. She certainly is. If sheep uses the form -- if sheep producers

:30:49.:30:54.

the form which she has been showing this week, it will be a tough match.

:30:55.:31:02.

I think it is fair to say Katherine is moving up a level against a

:31:03.:31:07.

world-class player in the shape of Alison Merrien. Alison has been

:31:08.:31:18.

around for a long time. Alison is still on form. Not many people can

:31:19.:31:46.

touch her. She is dominance. I have got the fortunate task of coaching

:31:47.:31:49.

the Jersey team in the Commonwealth Games. I am looking forward to that.

:31:50.:32:02.

Talented squad, both the men and the ladies. Hopefully, they will do

:32:03.:32:12.

well. Good opening holes here. -- good opening bowls here.

:32:13.:32:23.

Two really good bowls from Katherine. She doesn't appear to be

:32:24.:32:32.

suffering from any nerves, does she, David? I haven't noticed anything

:32:33.:32:40.

which indicates that she struggles with the atmosphere. She is lapping

:32:41.:32:46.

it up, loving it. Alison looks like she is winding up

:32:47.:33:00.

here. She will be happy with that, Alison.

:33:01.:34:19.

It was a good strike but not a very good result. No, no.

:34:20.:36:01.

Her strength will be getting close to the jack, particularly in the

:36:02.:36:05.

first few bowls. They are all struggling to come back

:36:06.:37:35.

to the centre here. I think Katherine has to be careful and not

:37:36.:37:37.

underestimate Alison here. If she alleges the jack, that would

:37:38.:41:32.

be a bit of a bonus. -- if she ages the jack.

:41:33.:41:41.

I would expect Alison to try and tickle the jack. She's on the

:41:42.:41:57.

backhand. She has enough weight to make the damage on the red bowls.

:41:58.:42:25.

It is one of those teasing end, isn't it? Alison is experienced

:42:26.:42:35.

enough. Nine times out of ten, they do not come off. Katherine looks to

:42:36.:42:44.

be not running with this one. Probably quite wise.

:42:45.:43:30.

There is Katherine's dad and ground. -- dad and grandma.

:43:31.:46:01.

That was a missed chance, because it has left a door open. It certainly

:46:02.:46:12.

has. Alison's parents, watching from the players lounge. Perfect view.

:46:13.:46:40.

She could have made two or three there.

:46:41.:46:49.

A chance for Alison to score a double.

:46:50.:47:23.

Hasn't really swathed interaction gets. There are signs of some very

:47:24.:47:30.

good bowling. Both players are playing quite well. They will both

:47:31.:47:47.

be reasonably happy with the start. We are eating jelly babies. Well,

:47:48.:47:54.

you are. I am an athlete, you were just a commentator.

:47:55.:48:07.

Thanks to Natasha for the jelly babies. It was a great big buckets

:48:08.:48:17.

of them. They will keep you going for the rest of the week, I think.

:48:18.:49:20.

If you play against a player with a lot of natural talent, but in many

:49:21.:49:28.

ways, relatively little experience, you move the jack around. Sometimes

:49:29.:49:36.

it is very subtle. It shakes them up a little bit. I think that is

:49:37.:49:43.

exactly what Alison is doing. She has seen how talented cartoonist. --

:49:44.:50:00.

she has seen how talented Katherine is.

:50:01.:50:16.

She's more confident on the forehand side.

:50:17.:51:08.

She is in the area. I could see what she was after. Damage limitation.

:51:09.:52:39.

She's been quite clever at the moment, which is quite right. Using

:52:40.:52:45.

all her experience. Katherine needs a good bowl to settle her down a

:52:46.:52:48.

little bit. She is showing a lot of maturity. If

:52:49.:55:23.

a player has the last bowl at the end, they do not need to play it.

:55:24.:57:12.

Any movement on the jack here must be good for Alison.

:57:13.:59:07.

Impressive CV for an 18-year-old. She is an outdoor under 25 winner,

:59:08.:59:19.

also senior international. She used to play a lot football. She

:59:20.:59:39.

decided to go down the bowls way. You can travel the world with bowls.

:59:40.:00:03.

I have a daughter myself who is about to do a test. She will be

:00:04.:00:08.

expecting a car, I am sure. Dad John, sitting in the back row,

:00:09.:00:16.

quietly out of the way. Business end of the set now. The

:00:17.:00:35.

last two sends, five all. Good first bowl.

:00:36.:00:42.

Better bowl here from Katherine. Yes, that wins it. Just got enough

:00:43.:02:02.

of the jack to touch it round the corner and fall back. That's not

:02:03.:02:03.

going to be easy to beat. If you are going to win these sort

:02:04.:02:19.

of matches, those are the sorts of bowls you have to play. Alison has a

:02:20.:02:24.

chance here. Nearly. Changes things a little bit. Given her a shoulder

:02:25.:02:27.

to come off on the forehand. Important Katherine puts another

:02:28.:02:34.

bowl on the head here. I think that last bowl will force

:02:35.:03:17.

Alison now into an attacking bowl. Try to remove both the red bowls. A

:03:18.:03:21.

backhand runner here. That's what she's playing. With a

:03:22.:03:32.

little bit of power. Straight bowls should hold for a long time, but

:03:33.:03:37.

it's just coming under now. I don't think that's going to make any

:03:38.:03:42.

difference, the angle wasn't right. The bowl was on the narrow side.

:03:43.:03:49.

That's when the narrow angle bowls really do struggle. Harder to play

:03:50.:03:59.

that type of shot. The bigger bias bowl will allow you to come back to

:04:00.:04:05.

the centre easier. -5 to Katherine, one end to go.

:04:06.:04:12.

This will be an interesting nervy last end for both players, but who

:04:13.:04:33.

can hold those nerves the best? Katherine has got no nerves. It's

:04:34.:04:38.

the joy of being a teenager, Andy, she just doesn't seem to feel the

:04:39.:04:43.

pressure. No, I don't think she does. That is a good opener, exactly

:04:44.:04:49.

what she wanted. I have seen experienced international players

:04:50.:04:55.

with 10, 15 years behind them at the top level, struggle in the portable

:04:56.:05:05.

rink. No sign of it with this lady. Wide and heavy from Alison.

:05:06.:05:12.

Chasing the two deep bowls are never going to go amiss. That's another

:05:13.:05:29.

good bowl here from Katherine. Good stuff. Unfortunate just to stay jack

:05:30.:05:37.

high. That's what you need, in in the middle of the afternoon. Banana

:05:38.:05:42.

to keep you going. This bowl running through, it looks tuberculosis. She

:05:43.:05:47.

pulled that across her body. Doesn't need all the weight. -- tight.

:05:48.:06:04.

She needed that a little bit deeper really. Not bad though because it

:06:05.:06:16.

covers the respot. She's going again. This is

:06:17.:06:29.

high-risk. Oh, dear. Not sure about that weight, Andy. You want to keep

:06:30.:06:35.

the bowl on the green. To score two now, it's almost going to be

:06:36.:06:39.

impossible, if Katherine puts a deep bowl in. She's got the respot

:06:40.:06:45.

covered. She wants to cover the ditch. She's line two. Well, it's

:06:46.:06:53.

going to be tough. The crowd are buzzing there because I don't think

:06:54.:06:58.

they really agreed with that shot either. Katherine, have you gone

:06:59.:07:03.

deep? Oh, I'm not sure. Oh, Katherine this is a big, big

:07:04.:07:07.

mistake. Why is she coming into the head? She should have been the

:07:08.:07:15.

deepest bowl. That is not what she wanted. The crowd are clapping. Jack

:07:16.:07:21.

in the dish, Alison scores two here. Less weight and try and control it

:07:22.:07:24.

and run the jack with her bowl. Not easy the way it's sitting. It looks

:07:25.:07:30.

like she is going heavy again. I think she's pulled it again. Well...

:07:31.:07:36.

I have to say, that's not good driving. I don't think it was the

:07:37.:07:40.

right tactics either. Katherine gave her a chance. However, it's the

:07:41.:07:46.

first set to Katherine Rednall. Referendum four shots and the first

:07:47.:07:49.

set to Katherine Rednall. COMMENTATOR: Katherine Rednall

:07:50.:07:54.

played steady bowls and kept the pressure on when Alison was moving

:07:55.:07:59.

the mat and the jack all around. She succeeded the last two ends, a four

:08:00.:08:06.

and a two. 11 shots to five, in the first set. The young lady from

:08:07.:08:11.

Ipswich. REFEREE: Jack line, 27.5 meters.

:08:12.:08:56.

COMMENTATOR: Slight disturbance. Alison just taking her time. Yes,

:08:57.:09:04.

the clock was stopped as well. It's down and running.

:09:05.:09:24.

That's a beauty. She's not letting go. Rightly so.

:09:25.:09:55.

Came strong in the second part of that set, did Katherine, she wants

:09:56.:10:02.

to just continue it. At the moment, Alison's just lost her way a little

:10:03.:10:06.

bit. Alison had a very good win in the first round, or the previous

:10:07.:10:12.

round, against Karen Murphy, 7-7 the first set. On sebgdcond 12 shots to

:10:13.:10:16.

three. -- on the second, 12 shots to three.

:10:17.:10:35.

APPLAUSE What a find she has been. Just

:10:36.:10:44.

decide enter, have a go. Here she is looking very good indeed. Hopefully,

:10:45.:10:48.

that will encourage more women to have a go. A chance here to play in

:10:49.:10:51.

the portable rink. It's not only that, Andy, selectors

:10:52.:11:01.

see that sort of performance, not just the performance, also the way

:11:02.:11:05.

she is handling the pressure. There are very few international bowlers

:11:06.:11:08.

who actually play in front of this sort of crowd? You are right,

:11:09.:11:13.

exactly. Almost 1,000 spectators here almost every day. It's big

:11:14.:11:18.

pressure. She's handling it really well, is Katherine.

:11:19.:11:33.

Well, it's a good blocker. I don't think it was intended to be there.

:11:34.:11:41.

It's given Alison problems. She will have to play it on the forehand. The

:11:42.:11:49.

backhand is out of action. Her weight shots have been rather off

:11:50.:11:56.

target. If she's playing the forehand it must be weight. Much

:11:57.:12:00.

more controlled weight. Allowing the ball to drift a little bit. Drifting

:12:01.:12:08.

too much. The red bowl turned out to be not so much in the way.

:12:09.:12:39.

Katherine Rednall will not be in the running for the Commonwealth Games,

:12:40.:12:45.

Andy, the England team have a very strong ladies team, I think, for

:12:46.:12:50.

Glasgow. They certainly are talented team, is the England team. Not

:12:51.:12:55.

announced yet. I think it's a few months yet. It's in the mix. Down to

:12:56.:13:02.

their elite squad, 10 men and 10 women at the moment. The women did

:13:03.:13:06.

well. The men not so well. The strength is in the women's side, at

:13:07.:13:11.

the moment, at that level. Alison will not be there, by the looks of

:13:12.:13:18.

it. No, she hasn't gained enough points with the Guernsey

:13:19.:13:24.

Commonwealth Games system. Slightly controversial that was.

:13:25.:13:33.

I'm sure all my Gurnsey friends will be sending me letters about that.

:13:34.:13:42.

Why don't you shut up about Alison's selection. It's certainly a

:13:43.:13:47.

controversial area, but I always Luke hear both sides of the story

:13:48.:13:49.

before I start making comments. Katherine changes her hand and draws

:13:50.:13:55.

the shot. It's early days. Alison should just

:13:56.:14:07.

be thinking about popping a few bowls into the head, wait for the

:14:08.:14:12.

opportunity. Pick up a count. She's just not drawing well enough with

:14:13.:14:16.

the first two deliveries. , her game has gone off.

:14:17.:14:29.

Once again a good first bowl, not fold up with a second and a third.

:14:30.:15:07.

Leaving the door open again. Alison's just not at the moment

:15:08.:15:10.

grouping the bowls together. Facing problems.

:15:11.:15:24.

Katherine, can you take advantage here and add another. I don't think

:15:25.:15:32.

she's running. Well that was a chance. Yes, a missed chance,

:15:33.:15:39.

indeed. Alison's going to try and fade inside her front green one.

:15:40.:15:47.

Nothing else available. She has chances here David, push the red

:15:48.:15:52.

bowl out, put the jack deep. Here we go. Again, it's a tight line bowl.

:15:53.:15:58.

It may hamper her a little bit. Once you go wide, I'm afraid, like this

:15:59.:16:08.

bowl, you will not get back. That particular manufacturer that the

:16:09.:16:14.

bowls are made by have a variety of models which do bend. Surprised

:16:15.:16:20.

she's going for that particular fine line model. She was happy in the

:16:21.:16:24.

first game with the bowling. She did lean with them. She feels

:16:25.:16:29.

comfortable with the bowl. Occasion Ali, shots are more difficult with

:16:30.:16:32.

them. Right away, Katherine is getting a little bit of a lead here,

:16:33.:16:36.

3-0, second set. -- occasionally. She's getting there with the second.

:16:37.:17:50.

Keeping the pressure on. Really, Alison hasn't really got that first

:17:51.:17:54.

bit going, the first two bowls. The last three or four ends Alison has

:17:55.:18:00.

struggled to get anything within a foot of the jack. Not quite

:18:01.:18:03.

comfortable here on the carpet. That's better. That wins it. A lot

:18:04.:18:11.

better. Forcing Katherine into, shall we

:18:12.:18:32.

say, the more difficult shot. I'm surprised a little bit. I thought

:18:33.:18:35.

she might have changed onto the forehand.

:18:36.:18:40.

The backhand is OK, she can tap her own bowl. Bringing the jack into the

:18:41.:18:48.

green one. She played it four feet away. If it stops any time now it

:18:49.:18:53.

will get in the way. That's the forehand out of

:18:54.:18:57.

commission. REFEREE: One green.

:18:58.:19:11.

COMMENTATOR: It will be interesting to see what Katherine plays here.

:19:12.:19:19.

She is attacking. Oh, that's a hard shot, Andy, that sort of weight.

:19:20.:19:31.

I think that might have been trying to draw that and hope to touch the

:19:32.:19:40.

red bowl. I've been with Katherine quite a bit. We talked about the

:19:41.:19:45.

shots to play in. I think she will realise that that's a difficult one.

:19:46.:19:51.

Just a draw here for Alison. Try and draw another.

:19:52.:20:09.

It's going to be difficult enough to drift it back in time. It's coming

:20:10.:20:17.

back. It will still struggle. Just a little bit heavy. She's on the

:20:18.:20:19.

board, in the second set, is Alison. REFEREE: One shot, Alison Merrien.

:20:20.:20:37.

COMMENTATOR: 3-1, after three ends. All very cagey at the moment.

:20:38.:20:57.

COMMENTATOR: That didn't look right, out of the hand. She's making the

:20:58.:21:41.

recovery with the second bowl. She wants to get that first bowl going

:21:42.:21:46.

again. As does Alison really, the first bowl puts a lot of pressure on

:21:47.:21:48.

the opposition. A chance now for Alison to put the

:21:49.:22:22.

pressure on, close the door, get a really good bowl in.

:22:23.:22:40.

Struggling. She's going to have a bad end here. Already three down.

:22:41.:23:10.

I'd expect another one to be added. Not Katherine's best end.

:23:11.:23:32.

Carrying a little bit. I thought it was number four. It's probably going

:23:33.:23:45.

to push that one out. Dropped away herself. I wonder if it's only the

:23:46.:23:48.

two now. REFEREE: Two green. A poor bowl by

:23:49.:23:55.

Alison. Certainly was. She was a little bit heavy with that one.

:23:56.:23:58.

Katherine just needs to find a yard on her previous deliveries. Second

:23:59.:24:02.

bowl, she'll be happy with that. Push it out on a good line. It looks

:24:03.:24:13.

better. A lot better. Here it comes. Second shot.

:24:14.:24:17.

APPLAUSE She walks down the rink and says -

:24:18.:24:22.

why could I not do that with the other three? Exactly.

:24:23.:24:28.

That was another opportunity for Alison Merrien there. Lying three,

:24:29.:24:35.

trying to draw for four, bang it in close. We are not saying that

:24:36.:24:39.

Katherine wouldn't have drawn the same shot, it's different with four

:24:40.:24:43.

against you than it is two? If Alison had put a good close one in

:24:44.:24:47.

there, Katherine was under a lot more pressure. Only facing two down,

:24:48.:24:53.

it's not quite as much. REFEREE: 29. 5 meters.

:24:54.:25:01.

COMMENTATOR: Now back to 29.5. Going back to the tactics used earlier on.

:25:02.:25:05.

Changing the length. It's important to get that opening bowl in.

:25:06.:25:13.

You're very harsh. 10 inches away from the jack, a full length. Great

:25:14.:25:34.

starter. This is even better. I'm a hard task master. Yes. You must be a

:25:35.:25:39.

tough skip to play for. That's a lovely line coming down

:25:40.:25:56.

here. Is it just carrying a little bit? It is.

:25:57.:26:14.

Once again, very close again. Stay on the high side. And, she has.

:26:15.:26:25.

Perfect. Oh, that's two great bowls. A different jack length as well. I

:26:26.:26:29.

think we might see Alison here with the heavy one. Here we come.

:26:30.:26:35.

Close. Very. Great strike. That will go on the respot. I think she's

:26:36.:26:44.

getting a good result out of this. Pushed her green bowl through. The

:26:45.:26:51.

jack, we can see, is off the side. Check these two bowls, one of them

:26:52.:26:56.

is a toucher, yes, the red one. That stays in the ditch and is live. The

:26:57.:27:00.

jack is outside the confines of the rink, which is the yellow marker on

:27:01.:27:09.

the bank. So that comes into the are respot position. A good strike and a

:27:10.:27:17.

good result. She hit the target and got fortunate pushing her own green

:27:18.:27:22.

bowl across, but it's a good strike. You're going to have to play across

:27:23.:27:24.

the rink. She looks narrow. A bit light on it

:27:25.:27:39.

as well. It might stop Alison playing the forehand.

:27:40.:27:44.

REFEREE: About four feet. COMMENTATOR: Amazing the different

:27:45.:27:53.

term ocean we have, Andy, in the sport. I made my way to the

:27:54.:27:59.

commentary box today and who gentlemen stopped me and talked

:28:00.:28:04.

about the cot as the jack. Yes, certain parts of the country have a

:28:05.:28:06.

name for the jack. Well played. Got to be worth reaching. A good

:28:07.:28:21.

draw for second. Very useful when you are 4-1 in front. Much better

:28:22.:28:29.

line with this. Is she too heavy? Too wide. The weight is keeping her

:28:30.:28:33.

out, Andy. It will dive towards the end. Here it comes. Yep. As you say,

:28:34.:28:43.

it was a bit too wide as well. Two great bowls from Katherine Rednall,

:28:44.:28:46.

ends up losing the double. REFEREE: Jack line, 26. 5 meters.

:28:47.:29:20.

Changing it again, Alison Merrien. 26. 5 meters. The variations

:29:21.:29:23.

continue. COMMENTATOR: Alison has decide to

:29:24.:29:41.

forego the backhand and change to the forehand. Katherine is always

:29:42.:29:45.

going to play this side. Good change in tactic.

:29:46.:30:27.

Just lacking that 2-macro feat. That would've been merely good.

:30:28.:32:24.

It is a counterweight. -- it is all down to wait.

:32:25.:32:34.

This is a good shot opportunity. Stretch her away little if she gets

:32:35.:32:55.

a double. " Jack. -- her family would not be happy if they do not

:32:56.:32:57.

see her scoring again. 28 metres is allowing Alison Merrien

:32:58.:33:11.

delivered on. Alison has to be really careful

:33:12.:35:57.

here. Any movement on the jack will not be to have advantage.

:35:58.:36:48.

She's close here. Very close. Oh, well played. APPLAUSE.

:36:49.:37:07.

She pushed the ball onto the jack. It was a confident shots. She played

:37:08.:37:16.

it well. Katherine Rednall is to up. -- two

:37:17.:38:06.

up. Two to play. She needs to get at least one shot

:38:07.:39:15.

here. I agree. She is almost in the final.

:39:16.:40:34.

This has got a bit of work to do to combat. -- come back.

:40:35.:40:49.

Alison is faced with an awkward situation.

:40:50.:41:25.

Katherine not sure where to put this last bowl.

:41:26.:41:41.

Realistically, anything down there is good. She's going in for the kill

:41:42.:41:49.

if she done for this. That was a good seat option. --

:41:50.:42:18.

gutsy option. She's forcing Alison into playing a very difficult shots

:42:19.:42:19.

here. I think you have got to take a

:42:20.:42:30.

gamble, Alison. It is a struggle for the bowl to get

:42:31.:42:53.

back of the centre. Neither very good start. Katherine

:42:54.:44:56.

will run for cover. Katherine has played very well.

:44:57.:45:48.

She has certainly played a very mature much.

:45:49.:45:58.

It looks on as impossible to score a four year.

:45:59.:46:06.

What a feeling this must be. Great feeling. It must be great. There she

:46:07.:46:57.

goes. Well, Katherine, congratulations.

:46:58.:47:21.

Alison is taking her time, rightly so.

:47:22.:47:27.

There is nothing there for her. I cannot even see anything. There is

:47:28.:47:34.

just nothing there. She knows she won't score a full. --

:47:35.:48:00.

four. A smarm are from the 18-year-old. --

:48:01.:48:16.

a smile there from the 18-year-old. Katherine gets a single. She takes

:48:17.:49:27.

the match. Her stats are fairly comprehensive.

:49:28.:49:43.

The drawing ability of Katherine Rednall really did win the day.

:49:44.:49:52.

There is Katherine Rednall. She's the youngest finalist this

:49:53.:49:57.

competition. How good does that sound? Yes. Really pleased to have

:49:58.:50:05.

got to the final. I played some of my best bowls. Alison was great as

:50:06.:50:13.

well. How much did yesterday help you today? The mixed players final

:50:14.:50:18.

was brilliant. Another close game. I think it did help in front of the

:50:19.:50:24.

crowd and the cameras. What was the pressure like playing in front of

:50:25.:50:27.

your family as much as anything else? There is no pressure with her

:50:28.:50:35.

family. Really? No. That got the day off work and I am really pleased

:50:36.:50:40.

he's here. How did you manage to get the day off school? I was meant to

:50:41.:50:45.

be in school this week but my headteacher has been really good and

:50:46.:50:51.

said I can have as much time as I need. Congratulations and well done

:50:52.:50:54.

on becoming the youngest finalist. Thank you. Congratulations to

:50:55.:51:00.

Katherine. Big day for her. Hopefully, she will get more time

:51:01.:51:04.

off school. We will ship in the final? We will look at who was she

:51:05.:51:13.

has got. Rebecca Field is up against Julie Forrest.

:51:14.:51:19.

We will pick this up at the start of the second set. Rebecca comfortably

:51:20.:51:23.

won the first. There is Alison Merrien, looking

:51:24.:52:45.

forward to her semifinal this afternoon.

:52:46.:53:24.

Bad results, Rebecca. She will be disappointed with that. A chance for

:53:25.:53:35.

Julia. An opportunity to tighten it up.

:53:36.:54:18.

Rebecca has played a lot of good bowls.

:54:19.:54:30.

It is one of these shots that pop up every now and again.

:54:31.:57:17.

Basically, Rebecca needs to work on her second bowl.

:57:18.:58:06.

She is left in a position of no real position.

:58:07.:00:06.

I am sure there must have been a game that was singles every

:00:07.:00:57.

thing-macro. Once again, the last end, it was it

:00:58.:02:27.

is certainly different this time, you just feel that Julie is

:02:28.:02:35.

loosening up. She needs to shake this game up. Julie changed her

:02:36.:02:40.

tactics on the last end and did not score a shot but Julie needs to up

:02:41.:02:49.

her game. They are playing neat bowls. You just feel that Julie is

:02:50.:02:56.

chugging along in second gear. She really needs to ratchet it up a bit.

:02:57.:03:08.

Changing her hand, good tactic. The opening two deliveries were not

:03:09.:03:16.

close enough. Let's give this hand a go. A decent swing in this hand. She

:03:17.:03:26.

is good with this one. It needs an edge and she has got it, that is a

:03:27.:03:28.

winner. Struggling with pace with this one.

:03:29.:04:11.

Now, Julie, spare shot opportunity. Merely needs to take this. -- really

:04:12.:04:15.

needs. It is a nice good, high Road. She

:04:16.:04:35.

has a chance with this one. It will be a measure for the first double in

:04:36.:04:41.

the match. My feeling is we will be heading for another single.

:04:42.:04:51.

That's quite close. Yes, and the bowl sitting down, you normally go

:04:52.:05:00.

with the one with a bulge on it and that is a red one. It might be just

:05:01.:05:07.

the one. Hard to tell. From our position, it looks just like one.

:05:08.:05:17.

I would put a measure on it, I really would. They are coming out

:05:18.:05:26.

with a measure. It is not always easy to check out. Sandra will

:05:27.:05:27.

confirm one way or the other. UMPIRE: One-shot, Julie Forrest. She

:05:28.:06:12.

missed her chance. We thought it was only the one on the rings.

:06:13.:06:27.

A lovely arena here at Potters Leisure Resort. You can see where

:06:28.:06:35.

the tournament office is, the players' lounge. And we are in

:06:36.:06:41.

darkness which is the best way to keep us. We get a great view from

:06:42.:06:51.

the commentary box. Just keep us out of vision, David!

:06:52.:06:56.

A face for radio, is that what you are saying?

:06:57.:07:11.

The first time that Rebecca has led on the backhand side. Opening ball

:07:12.:07:44.

of Julie Pozner forcing her onto the backhand side. -- opening ball of

:07:45.:07:48.

Julie's. We have not seen too much grouping

:07:49.:08:17.

of the bowls. That is better from Julie. Once again, it has forced

:08:18.:08:22.

Rebecca onto the backhand side when she hasn't played beside a lot. --

:08:23.:08:34.

played this side. Julie needs another one in behind the jack for

:08:35.:08:36.

cover. I am assuming the depth was

:08:37.:09:00.

deliberate. She was definitely trying to get a back bowl. Probably

:09:01.:09:05.

didn't need to go as deep as that. Always helps to have the deepest

:09:06.:09:11.

bowl. Rebecca is playing a narrower line, a more positive shot and I

:09:12.:09:17.

think she will go under. That hasn't really helped. I think she is now

:09:18.:09:21.

two shots down. The danger is, will be two

:09:22.:09:36.

cabbages... I think they are just about level with each other, the

:09:37.:09:37.

deep ones. Excellent bowl. A really good bowl,

:09:38.:10:00.

she needed that. Three down, quite a big target,

:10:01.:10:16.

here. You would expect Rebecca to hit something here, take some of the

:10:17.:10:18.

bowls out. A big drive, some interesting

:10:19.:10:27.

terminologies for the drive, call it what you will. A case of hitting the

:10:28.:10:30.

target. What a bowl. Maximum results, and

:10:31.:10:39.

it. She picked up a treble. Hits the

:10:40.:10:52.

target, all three balls cleared out of the head, what a result. Good

:10:53.:11:03.

weight. That is possibly a matchwinner for Rebecca Field.

:11:04.:11:10.

There is my mixed pairs partner, Catherine, ready for her big game

:11:11.:11:17.

this afternoon. Players watching in the players lounge.

:11:18.:11:26.

A massive six shot turnaround there. That was a big turnaround. From

:11:27.:11:32.

three down to three up. I think Julie could take a bit of

:11:33.:11:47.

confidence from that. It was a good end. She just needs to repeat that.

:11:48.:12:26.

It will be interesting to see how Julie Forrest response to that. The

:12:27.:12:52.

first time that she has really had a good position, a lovely played

:12:53.:12:58.

weight shot, it shows the damage you can do. Exactly, if I was Rebecca, I

:12:59.:13:08.

would agree. She should take confidence from that end.

:13:09.:13:15.

Has it knocked her confidence? We'll have to see.

:13:16.:13:23.

This bowl could cause Julie some problems.

:13:24.:13:37.

Three shots but they are all two feet away. I would expect Julie to

:13:38.:13:44.

be better with this one. She just needs to push the ball out and it is

:13:45.:13:47.

a big hand, this backhand. Gently on the jack... Goodness me,

:13:48.:14:10.

did that pull away quickly? I think she has got the shot. The trouble is

:14:11.:14:18.

she is still underplaying the line and now there is a chance for

:14:19.:14:21.

Rebecca to move the jack a couple of inches. Readily available on both

:14:22.:14:29.

hands but she has been preferring the backhand.

:14:30.:14:46.

She gets a shot. Good enough, she will be happy enough. The last bowl

:14:47.:14:57.

has been very effective from Rebecca. This match would have been

:14:58.:15:00.

totally different except for three or four last bowl deliveries.

:15:01.:15:05.

Rebecca has played a lot of big last bowls. But Julie must draw the shot

:15:06.:15:09.

here. She has got it. Into-macro oh, yes.

:15:10.:15:25.

Well played. Massive bowl.

:15:26.:15:34.

UMPIRE: One-shot, Julie Forrest. A wider line, just had enough weight

:15:35.:15:54.

to sneak up to the red bowl and drop-in for number one.

:15:55.:16:18.

UMPIRE: Jacklin 28.5 metres. -- jack length.

:16:19.:16:39.

A different tactic here from Julie. Slightly longer length. I think she

:16:40.:16:55.

is still thinking here on the rink. She is a good tactician, Julie.

:16:56.:17:02.

Good correction here from Rebecca, excellent bowl, well played.

:17:03.:18:00.

Corrections were needed, and the big bowl when required. That has been

:18:01.:18:06.

the difference, Rebecca has played the big bowls when required.

:18:07.:18:32.

Great shot. She was a bit unlucky there.

:18:33.:18:40.

That has got her down to one. A match last night and a lot of bowls

:18:41.:18:50.

were played like that by layers where everything seems to go wrong.

:18:51.:18:56.

Good bowl but did not get the shot. I think in those's case I don't

:18:57.:19:04.

think he got the run of the green. Are intended to call that shot in

:19:05.:19:11.

the future a Les! He was so unlucky last night, it was unbelievable. I

:19:12.:19:16.

think Jonathan Ross deserves a little break now and then. Julie,

:19:17.:19:25.

not a great head you are facing. Difficult to see how she will score

:19:26.:19:30.

here. That is exactly the situation if you pick up the jack and it

:19:31.:19:33.

bounces to the opposition, left virtually nothing. She had better be

:19:34.:19:42.

quick. Wow. One second to spare. She is in the area, will it get back?

:19:43.:19:51.

No. Try to peel the ball out clean. One second, I honestly thought she

:19:52.:19:58.

would lose that one. I was looking forward to hearing the bus this

:19:59.:20:04.

morning, David. It picks me up. -- hearing the buzzer. Another single.

:20:05.:20:11.

Rebecca happy with the one. It has been a very tidy, professional

:20:12.:20:19.

performance by Rebecca Field. The large crowd here have certainly

:20:20.:20:25.

appreciated this match. Obviously, we will be very fair but the local

:20:26.:20:31.

woman will obviously have the extra bit of support. The majority will be

:20:32.:20:40.

favouring the Norfolk girl. The crowd just want to see good bowls.

:20:41.:20:42.

They are a fair crowd. It is the big end seven. Julie you

:20:43.:21:11.

feel probably needs to score here. Seventh end, a key end in the nine

:21:12.:21:53.

end set. One that the player who is trailing needs to score. And it is

:21:54.:21:57.

essential that Julie Forrest get something out of this. Good bowling,

:21:58.:22:03.

Andy, but not many really nailing the jack. Not much grouping together

:22:04.:22:08.

of the bowls, shall we say. Lots of big bowls, most of them played by

:22:09.:22:11.

Rebecca. She is just not getting the weight.

:22:12.:22:35.

Just overplaying it. She can put a lot of pressure on Julie here if she

:22:36.:22:37.

has a good close bowl. There is room here for Julie, after

:22:38.:22:52.

that slightly heavy shot. Given a third batch of the Cherry and she

:22:53.:22:55.

really shouldn't have been allowed that. -- third bite of the cherry.

:22:56.:23:06.

I think she is still one down. It had just run through.

:23:07.:23:26.

Another chance for Julie Forrest. She is three down so there is lot of

:23:27.:23:59.

pressure on this bowl. If she fails here, I think the game

:24:00.:24:06.

is all over. She plays off the wide line all the

:24:07.:24:18.

time with the position of the mat. It will have to stop quickly.

:24:19.:24:26.

She scores another single on this end.

:24:27.:25:13.

Lots of discussions about who would be the best player, it is hard to

:25:14.:25:21.

tell because there are some fantastic players in the southern

:25:22.:25:26.

hemisphere. Jo Edwards from New Zealand. Yes, currently one of the

:25:27.:25:29.

top players. I would agree, they have been many good players.

:25:30.:25:34.

Outdoor, Karen Murphy. Super player outdoors, and going back a bit and

:25:35.:25:47.

Julie Forrest's CV is amazing. Julie will be first to admit that perhaps

:25:48.:25:53.

it has not been her year. It does not look as good here, but I agree,

:25:54.:26:00.

talented player. She has perhaps not played her best bowls on the

:26:01.:26:07.

portable rink. Norma Shaw, she was a fantastic player for England. Or

:26:08.:26:14.

Margaret Johnson from your neck of the woods, another talented player.

:26:15.:26:19.

It is hard to tell the generations as well. It really is.

:26:20.:26:23.

And then you are looking at this, the indoor, outdoor situations.

:26:24.:26:35.

Melee talented lady players -- many talented. But things are not looking

:26:36.:26:47.

good for Julie here at the moment. Rebecca sees the finishing line now.

:26:48.:26:54.

You just feel that she has lost her way.

:26:55.:26:58.

Rebecca is going to have a look at this head.

:26:59.:27:10.

I think she would do well to block the way in for Julie and stop I

:27:11.:27:18.

think she is putting a position bowl in here, and covering the inner

:27:19.:27:21.

spot. Julie being left with a difficult

:27:22.:27:32.

shot once again. She is in heaps of trouble. Four

:27:33.:28:04.

yard short on the forehand might be useful and forced Julie into trying

:28:05.:28:10.

to draw the shot. That runner, Julie's green bowl was blocking her

:28:11.:28:19.

out. In a lot of trouble. It looks like probable last end of the game

:28:20.:28:21.

here. UMPIRE: Time-out called. Three

:28:22.:28:28.

time-outs remaining. Hasn't used one yet so she can take all four in one

:28:29.:28:35.

go if she wanted. She knows that she is in a very good position. Even for

:28:36.:28:43.

Julie to draw, it would be very difficult. Doesn't matter what she

:28:44.:28:49.

does here, but don't put it anywhere near the head. They are asking each

:28:50.:28:57.

other what they think. Custer's last stand comes to mind! A bit late to

:28:58.:29:03.

be thinking what you think at the end!

:29:04.:29:11.

This is difficult for Julie. I think tried to draw the shot. There is no

:29:12.:29:21.

other shot on, and nest she plays a backhand bowl onto the jack, bounces

:29:22.:29:25.

it up the ring. This is just so difficult to get out of this.

:29:26.:29:31.

UMPIRE: Time-out called. The backhand runner might be the only

:29:32.:29:34.

way because there's nothing on the forehand except an absolute draw to

:29:35.:29:37.

within an inch of the jack. So difficult. The jack may come in

:29:38.:29:43.

in a different direction. It is all over. Rebecca Field picks

:29:44.:30:04.

up the double and I have to say, the defending champion really did play

:30:05.:30:09.

well in that match. Very consistent drawing but pulled out some really

:30:10.:30:13.

big bowls when needed. Thoroughly deserves to win. An amazing match in

:30:14.:30:22.

some ways in the first set, Andy, because all the singles that were

:30:23.:30:26.

played. The majority going to Rebecca, and I would agree with you,

:30:27.:30:30.

without doubt, Rebecca was the better player on the day are due to

:30:31.:30:34.

their second final, she will be delighted.

:30:35.:30:40.

Defending champion is through to the final once again and she will play

:30:41.:30:47.

Catherine read Noel in the youngest ever line-up for the women's final.

:30:48.:30:52.

These two met a couple of his ago in the other 25, edition and Catherine

:30:53.:30:55.

came out on top and that is live tomorrow.

:30:56.:31:00.

There is one match that we haven't brought you news on so far It. Part

:31:01.:31:08.

in the men's competition, took place last night between Les Gillett and

:31:09.:31:14.

Jonathan Ross. Ross leads 3-2 having won the first set.

:31:15.:31:21.

COMMENTATOR: Jonathan Ross, the man from outside Belfast, now living in

:31:22.:31:31.

Paisley. He got over the line in the first set. He played good o bowls in

:31:32.:31:37.

the second set. Good drawing, good conversion shots.

:31:38.:31:43.

We have thought for many years that Jonathan Ross has under performed,

:31:44.:31:52.

as regards to his overall ability on television events. Maybe it's his

:31:53.:31:53.

year. Up against this man, Les Gillett,

:31:54.:32:06.

well-known to both of us, John, and to many of the top players on the

:32:07.:32:08.

circuit. Really good player. Trying to

:32:09.:32:18.

reestablish himself. He has just found it a little difficult, when he

:32:19.:32:23.

has had the chances in recent years on the portable rink, he hasn't

:32:24.:32:27.

quite lived up to the expectation. There is no doubt in his class,

:32:28.:32:35.

David. I don't think anybody would want to draw Les. His defeat of his

:32:36.:32:42.

opponent in the first round proves that. Sets wise, 8-3, 2-8 and 2-1

:32:43.:32:52.

the tie-break. Wasn't much in it, David Gourlay would have realised

:32:53.:32:56.

that Les Gillett was a very dangerous opponent.

:32:57.:33:11.

Doesn't want that. That's a bad result. Thought it might have gone

:33:12.:33:18.

in on the openside then. Always the danger of turning that green bowl

:33:19.:33:20.

in. Yes, Les was unlucky to lose the

:33:21.:33:30.

first set. Jonathan managed to get the edge off his shot bowl, push it

:33:31.:33:32.

off the jack. Little touch on the jack. That will

:33:33.:33:41.

bring it out into the open, just a little bit more. UMPIRE: Two green.

:33:42.:34:07.

COMMENTATOR: Les is in a bit of bother now. He was looking good at

:34:08.:34:15.

one stage. Dropping a second bowl in. Hits the green one, now he has

:34:16.:34:22.

two against him. When he gets to his last delivery he's likely to have

:34:23.:34:24.

three against him. This is looking good for the third.

:34:25.:34:52.

He's left a shoulder. Les really should be attacking this. Not a

:34:53.:34:56.

great last bowl, it isn't. He's going for it. Lots of opportunities.

:34:57.:35:03.

He's in the area. How's his luck? Hasn't got any. Hasn't got any. Some

:35:04.:35:09.

days it doesn't pay to get out of bed. Unbelievable.

:35:10.:35:14.

Definite two and a measure for the third. That's a few times now that

:35:15.:35:20.

Les has been in the area for running bowl and got absolutely nothing out

:35:21.:35:29.

of it. The umpire will come out and sort this out.

:35:30.:36:07.

UMPIRE: Two shots, Jonathan Ross. APPLAUSE

:36:08.:36:42.

UMPIRE: Backlength, 28. 5 meters. -- jack length, 28. 5 meters.

:36:43.:37:08.

APPLAUSE COMMENTATOR: Another good opener.

:37:09.:37:15.

Problem for Les now, he can't afforded to see Jonathan stretching

:37:16.:37:20.

away in this set much he has to hang in there. Next two ends probably

:37:21.:37:30.

crucial, needs to score. Another good bowl onto the green. It's just

:37:31.:37:33.

not happening at the moment for Les. Yes. He's been very close on a lot

:37:34.:37:48.

of occasions, but a little bit of luck has gone against him. It's a

:37:49.:37:57.

bit like driving a car with one flat tyres and he mansion to get one of

:37:58.:38:02.

the tyres that does have a puncture. It keeps going. He's been a bit

:38:03.:38:05.

unlucky, that's all. He's going to have to start stepping

:38:06.:38:15.

up a gear because he's running out of time.

:38:16.:38:19.

Not in good shape here. Two not bad bowls, but they're short of a

:38:20.:38:30.

length. If he tucks one under in front of that jack, he's in big

:38:31.:38:32.

trouble. Has a bit of work to do this bowl.

:38:33.:39:03.

He's got a chance though. Here it comes. Gently, don't drop back on

:39:04.:39:08.

the jack. Oh, he's hung onto it. I thought if that jack had of moved to

:39:09.:39:15.

the green bowl, I would have said Les, think about the white flag.

:39:16.:39:24.

That's a beauty. He's in there. Les is on the old energy drinks. Not

:39:25.:39:31.

sure about that, mate, energy drinks, 240 volts might not go amiss

:39:32.:39:37.

on occasions, just to inject a little bit of something into his

:39:38.:39:40.

veins because he is a talented player. You just feel, if he comes

:39:41.:39:45.

out with one really big bowl, he could change everything in this

:39:46.:39:46.

match. Good effort by Jonathan. Jonathan

:39:47.:39:58.

hasn't got the shot. He is making it very difficult for Les to add

:39:59.:40:02.

another. He is closing everything down, isn't he?

:40:03.:40:23.

Didn't push it through. Better to get the jack, play safe. Get the

:40:24.:40:30.

single. Track in hand. He can change things. He's a flow player. If he

:40:31.:40:37.

can get into a flow, he can make things very difficult, but really

:40:38.:40:43.

needs to start score next couple of ends. Start taking this match to

:40:44.:40:47.

Jonathan Ross. That is what happens with Jonathan Ross, actually, if

:40:48.:40:51.

he's allowed freedom he will play and play well. When you start

:40:52.:40:55.

putting him under pressure, that running bowl starts to become

:40:56.:40:59.

inconsistent. You are probably right, Dave. You know Jonathan

:41:00.:41:05.

better than I do, you have long association through the Irish team

:41:06.:41:09.

with Jonathan. Talented player, he hasn't really got close to a final

:41:10.:41:18.

in the events. He had a semi-final many years ago. He will be keen to

:41:19.:41:23.

do well. That's what Les needs to do. Another foot on that, it would

:41:24.:41:26.

have been a really good bowl. Just leaving a little bit of room.

:41:27.:41:40.

It's also the fact he has been left out of the Scottish International

:41:41.:41:46.

Indoor team this year. He has been playing with them for the last few

:41:47.:41:50.

years. I think Jonathan has a little edge in his game. He wants to prove

:41:51.:41:54.

the fact that the selectors were wrong to do that. Good run here.

:41:55.:41:56.

Might help. Large teams of course and six rinks

:41:57.:42:13.

of four players. 24 players. When you take into consideration how many

:42:14.:42:17.

bowlers there are, it's quite an elite group. Yes Scotland is

:42:18.:42:23.

strength and depth. Not many poor players in Scotland.

:42:24.:42:27.

If that drops, it's got a chance, just holding up. UMPIRE: It's about

:42:28.:42:44.

11 inch. COMMENTATOR: That would be Les

:42:45.:42:51.

changing, I would have thought, onto his forehand.

:42:52.:43:06.

APPLAUSE. Good bowl. Got to be tempting for

:43:07.:43:15.

Jonathan now to run the two off. Decent size of target. Still got an

:43:16.:43:21.

open draw on his backhand side. He doesn't favour running on his

:43:22.:43:25.

forehand. He might stay away from that. He's deciding to draw. Prefers

:43:26.:43:29.

the weight shot on his backhand. He's got a chance. Just the wrong

:43:30.:43:38.

side of the red one. UMPIRE: One, red.

:43:39.:43:52.

COMMENTATOR: Really, Les has option, he could play the same bowl, Dave,

:43:53.:43:58.

draw it in and close it out on the backhand side. If he turns the jack

:43:59.:44:04.

six inches he could make a four out of it. Certainly worth a chance to

:44:05.:44:07.

get to the back green bowl. Forehand, he can come in on the wide

:44:08.:44:13.

side. This bowl will take a big heavy dip at the end. Not quite

:44:14.:44:14.

enough. Looks like a decent line, for

:44:15.:44:54.

Jonathan. Oh, is he going to make the gap? It will be one. 5-4, three

:44:55.:45:04.

to go. Les Gillett fighting his way back in

:45:05.:45:33.

this second set, 5-2 down. Now 5-4. Three ends to go. The mat is well up

:45:34.:45:48.

the rink. 24 meters, let's see how Les gets on with his first delivery.

:45:49.:46:06.

APPLAUSE That is not a bad start.

:46:07.:46:28.

UMPIRE: One, red. 10 inches your bowl.

:46:29.:46:48.

COMMENTATOR: Les playing his backhand. Needs to hurry with this

:46:49.:46:55.

one to get in front of the green. Just making it.

:46:56.:46:59.

APPLAUSE. Jonathan coming down to have a look.

:47:00.:47:10.

There are choices for Jonathan Ross, he will have a look to see what the

:47:11.:47:17.

angles are like. He can draw either side, not a particular problem with

:47:18.:47:20.

that. There is also a temptation, that is onto the green bowl. He will

:47:21.:47:24.

take a time out. I fancy the runner on this. He's been playing them

:47:25.:47:31.

pretty well, getting results from them.

:47:32.:47:40.

Well, deciding on the draw. This has to be very accurate.

:47:41.:47:55.

Always useful, if he didn't want to play that split with the next bowl.

:47:56.:48:09.

All three bowls will certainly disappear. Les will be trying to get

:48:10.:48:18.

one just behind the jack, if he can, we usually find this is the key end

:48:19.:48:24.

for any player that's in front. Win this and the opposition is really

:48:25.:48:26.

chasing things. I don't think there will be any mess

:48:27.:48:41.

being this time. He has to hit this. He has three bowls wide, 24 meters.

:48:42.:48:51.

He's on his favourite backhand for hitting.

:48:52.:49:00.

Oh, what a result. Oh! He ended up with a front toucher and the back

:49:01.:49:08.

position. That's what you call a maximum result. Les must be thinking

:49:09.:49:15.

to himself - what have I got to do? He has left Les absolutely no shot

:49:16.:49:19.

on this. Absolutely, no shot. There is nothing there for him. What a

:49:20.:49:25.

result. Poor, Les. He's smiling, he is sort of thinking to himself - my

:49:26.:49:30.

goodness me, this is not my night for this.

:49:31.:49:34.

That is an unbelievable bowl. UMPIRE: Les has two time-outs

:49:35.:49:43.

remaining. COMMENTATOR: He couldn't have

:49:44.:49:46.

anticipated a result like that. Unbelievable. He did. He hit the

:49:47.:49:51.

outside red, then the green. I'm thinking to myself... I thought he

:49:52.:49:56.

was going to end up two down, but... I think that's a bit cruel on less

:49:57.:50:04.

leshgs to be honest. Les might have to cover the shot. He has to. Trying

:50:05.:50:18.

to draw. Oh, no, no, Les. Jonathan could win this. Could win it on

:50:19.:50:23.

this. Any movement on the jack through the rink. He has to play

:50:24.:50:27.

this. It there is no reason why he doesn't play it with weight. Whizz

:50:28.:50:32.

the jack through to there. He will bring in his other two bowls, his

:50:33.:50:36.

own bowl will probably run through. It looks like he's drawing. H,

:50:37.:50:45.

Johnny. Drawing on the backhand. Well, I have to say I'm surprised. I

:50:46.:50:57.

think that was a chance. UMPIRE: One shot, Jonathan Ross.

:50:58.:51:00.

COMMENTATOR: He could have been brave there.

:51:01.:51:07.

I have to say that you talk about the rub of the green, whether that

:51:08.:51:30.

being in bowls, snooker or various other things, the reality is that

:51:31.:51:33.

Jonathan Ross has definitely had the luck in this match.

:51:34.:51:46.

Realistically, he's probably only one shot away from a place in the

:51:47.:51:52.

quarter-final. Yes, I think you're right there, Dave. Just needs to

:51:53.:51:55.

score this end. That's why I thought he might have

:51:56.:52:04.

played that shot on the last end, it was a big opportunity. That's a good

:52:05.:52:05.

start. Jonathan's last quarter-final in

:52:06.:52:25.

singles play was the International Open in Wales, three years ago.

:52:26.:52:38.

CROWD GROAN. You have to go back to 2006 for another International Open

:52:39.:52:50.

quarter-final. The last quarter-final in the World Singles

:52:51.:52:57.

is now 10-years ago. So, it's a big hurdle for him. UMPIRE: Two greens.

:52:58.:53:08.

The gap is 9 inches. It's five inches past. Still drawable. They

:53:09.:53:16.

are in a line so... Les needs a really big bowl, John, to have any

:53:17.:53:18.

sort of a chance. He's underplayed this. It's not

:53:19.:53:24.

going to be with this one. I think that's pretty hard to beat

:53:25.:53:44.

that situation, John. Jonathan has to be careful here because he

:53:45.:53:51.

doesn't want to leave a shoulder. If he can draw in and just turn that

:53:52.:53:57.

front green down, he's underweight, missed his line.

:53:58.:54:01.

I think Les will have to attack this. That's virtually a match lie

:54:02.:54:10.

against him. In fact, it is a match lie against him. He has to play into

:54:11.:54:16.

it. It looks like a left hander, his backhand would give him better odds.

:54:17.:54:21.

A chance of getting the short bowl into the jack with the two green

:54:22.:54:27.

bowls clean. Not an ideal position. He could end up half in one of those

:54:28.:54:31.

bowls and going away and he's still in trouble. Difficult. Not easy. No,

:54:32.:54:40.

I think he has to play it. Yes. Runner. It looks narrow to me.

:54:41.:54:47.

Doesn't want to get his own bowl this could be a disaster. It is.

:54:48.:54:54.

That is a nightmare. Well, poor old Les. It isn't happening Razor. I

:54:55.:55:02.

should explain that Les's nickname is razor, it's not that he hasn't

:55:03.:55:04.

shaved for a day or two. Now, he's in deep trouble. It's

:55:05.:55:19.

going to be very difficult. He's only got a dead draw now. Jonathan,

:55:20.:55:26.

really should be going deep with this. Anything past the red bowl is

:55:27.:55:33.

good. It's not bad. Covered the respot. I think he has to go again,

:55:34.:55:39.

John, because bowl onto bowl, he's got a chance, he will stay in with

:55:40.:55:44.

the red. It's so difficult to draw that shot the way it's sitting.

:55:45.:55:52.

It's not a good position. I think he's going to try and draw the shot.

:55:53.:55:57.

Good on him for trying the hard shot.

:55:58.:56:08.

I don't think he's going to make it for weight. He's going to lose the

:56:09.:56:15.

double. Match over. Two shots to Jonathan Ross. He takes the second

:56:16.:56:22.

set, 8-4, having won the first set 7-6. Jonathan Ross from Paisley in

:56:23.:56:27.

Scotland who is through to the quarter-final. Indeed

:56:28.:56:31.

congratulations to Jonathan Ross. He's through to the quarter-finals.

:56:32.:56:38.

Also there Stewart Anderson, Robert Paxton and Mervyn King.

:56:39.:56:48.

First of all, from today's action Stewart Anderson looked good? Very

:56:49.:56:56.

comfortable. He wasn't under too much pressure. . Robert didn't get

:56:57.:57:04.

going. He looked relax. His odds yesterday, they will have gone down

:57:05.:57:09.

a bit. You tipped him. The ladies final tomorrow, the youngest ever

:57:10.:57:13.

line-up for that, 18 and 24. How good does that feel for the sport?

:57:14.:57:17.

It's great for the sport especially as one of the players came through

:57:18.:57:21.

the qualifying. Katherine Rednall came through the qualifying. It's

:57:22.:57:25.

open to anyone. Anyone can join in and have a go. She qualified. It's

:57:26.:57:30.

in a final. Wonderful for an 18-year-old to have that level of

:57:31.:57:35.

exposure. The let us remind you of what is to come on the BBC. We have

:57:36.:57:46.

highlights on BBC Two at 00.20 am. Tomorrow, on the BBC, we are on the

:57:47.:57:54.

Red Button from 10.00 am, Andy Thomson against John Price and the

:57:55.:58:00.

ladies fine Rebecca Field against Katherine Rednall, the youngest

:58:01.:58:03.

line-up ever. We look forward to that. It's been a great day for the

:58:04.:58:11.

defending champions, Rebecca Field is in the final of the ladies

:58:12.:58:14.

Stewart Anderson is through to the next round. From all of us here,

:58:15.:58:17.

goodbye.
