Hello, welcome to Potters. One more match to go and if it has got some

of the magical moments we have seen this week we are in for a treat.

This is the moment the matters the most. We come to the final of the

championship, and the people through today are Darren Burnett up against

Mervyn King, the local lad. They have both produced some superb

performances this week. A tough semifinal against Rob

Anderson for Burnett, and up against Paul Foster, Mervyn King was

outstanding. Mervyn King against Darren Burnett,

which one of these two possesses the right accommodation to come up the

winning score? -- the right combination?

Darren Burnett against Mervyn King, it should be a marvellous match.

What a brilliant bowl. Standing to my left is the man who

has done the title before, Greg Harlow. You felt the force of Darren

Burnett earlier this week. Darren Burnett and Mervyn King, there has

been no luck about them getting to the final, they have both been

outstanding. Absolutely. Merv has been drawn all week and so has

Darren, he took me out in the second round. If he carries that form on,

we are in for a treat. I mentioned a couple of performances from Mervyn

King, beating Nicky Brett and yesterday, against the world number

one, Paul Foster. Two performances that professionals watching have

been saying they are as best as they have ever seen. Those games have

released it out, millimetres to spare and Merv was getting them. Who

is good to come out into up in your hours? Is Darren going to dazzle or

is Merv going to swerve? I am going to go with the swerve. To be the

King! Let's not keep the finalists any more, let's join the MC.

Appearing in his very first world indoor singles title and hoping to

go through and pick up this coveted trophy is this very popular man from

Scotland. Davies and gentlemen, the world number seven, Darren Burnett!

-- ladies and gentlemen. And this local hero played superbly

to book himself a place in this final. Already a former world indoor

singles champion and hoping to make his second, ladies and gentlemen, it

is Norfolk very own Mervyn King! There is no doubt that local game

keeper Mervyn King, who has wonderful in 2006, has got the crowd

support. This is a massive day for Darren Burnett in his first final.

Let's join our commentators. It is going to be a fantastic game.

80% would be very good, if they get near the top of their game, it is

going to be something special. The policeman from Arbroath against the

gamekeeper from Norfolk. It is whisking to be a good story. Yes,

and both players played very well this week, they will be looking to

start well in this match and get an early advantage. A very good crowd

here anticipating a real cracker. Once again, we move from nine ends

to 11 ends to the final, three and a tie-break. After that, it is needed,

of course. There is support here for Darren

Burnett, a large Scottish contingent are down from Glasgow and Arbroath.

And we have our usual friends from Inverness.

You will hear this crowd cheering every bowl of Mervyn King, as you

would expect, the local man. He is very popular, Suzanne his wife,

along with Alicia and Harriet. The bowl has dropped down, it will

make it even more secure. This is sometimes why it works

against you getting the local support. Feel like there is a bit of

pressure on with every bowl. That's right. If Merv income is out of the

blocks quickly, there could be a couple of shots in each set. -- if

he comes out of the blocks. This man is an experienced player, Darren

Burnett, it will not faze him. He has seen it all before.

This has got to creep up to the jack, it is very close. That is a

very good second. Hardly an opportunity, John, for a

spare shot. What an effort. That was a big cry, couple of inches in

weight, it fell back. It is a single to Mervyn King.

Well, they were queueing up outside for this match, at 11:45am this

morning. Well, we've is saying, John, in the

semifinal, I think this is the best we've seen from Darren Burnett in

the last five or six years. He appears to be on top form. Last

year, through to the final but hard way, he has not had it easy by any

means. A difficult draw for Darren, took out Greg Harlow. A very hard

match against Stewart Anderson and then the man he beat in the semi,

the inform Robert Pattinson, so it was a tough route to the final.

Of course, Mervyn King, he had to take out Paul Foster. He is

favourite for almost every event he plays in. And early runner. Inside.

That is one of my international colleagues watching up there, along

with their son, William, what a lovely Christmas present if you love

the game. He has brought young William here for the finals. Mervyn

King has got another one in, needs to strike again.

They have to go again. This will be a little bit quicker, a little bit

more direct. He has given it a good look. It is

in the ditch, the red bowl is going to fall in, that is not a touch so

it will be taken away. There is going to be three bowls of the wink

here. -- officer rink. I think it is just as well that Darren Burnett has

the last bowl. Yes, a lot of distance between those three bowls

and the jack. What does Mervyn do? Does he try to get one really close?

I would suggest three or four away could be enough because Darren

cannot afford to take a risk. He has pushed this out very wide. Oh

well! Had a look at the side ditch, decided, do not fancy that much

should. Needs to stop though. There is no way that Darren Burnett will

take a risk trying to outgrow that bowl, that was a beauty. The crowd

enjoyed that one. This will be second shot, there is no way he's

going to go anywhere near the ditch. Just take out the other three shots,

settle for second. It is safe second bowl, that all he

can do. We always have Brian and Judy Potter

but we have the whole family here today. Brian and Judy, Jean and

John, and John's wife Celia. We have Amelia and Young Harry who was

playing rugby this morning. He has shortly he won, he is happy to be

here! -- he has assured me. Don't often see the whole Potter

family here together but it is good to see they are here, good to see

Brian looking so well. Some health problems recently and he has come

through very well indeed. Of course, he has got an MBE for tourism in

Norfolk, not surprisingly. Darren, just short here. The problem

he has got, living in this kind of form, it is going to be difficult to

shake off any sort of length. He is going to have to sticking in the

early stages, weather the storm, get a pat form to build on. It is all

about line and length, grind you down.

Mervyn under the forehand, he misses the jack in the backhand, does not

want to touch that. Skirts across quickly to the Red Bull.

This crowd are willing every Mervyn King all in. They thought that was

good as well. Little premature, perhaps, just over the run-in.

It is a knowledgeable crowd, no doubt about that, just trying to

read the pace of the rink at the moment. Darren Burnett down on the

backhand, looking to turn the jack to the red bowl.

Good line, again, just over the weight.

The shot clock is in in action, it is down to 13 seconds. No problem

for Mervyn King. He is a fairly swift player. Now,

this one has got a bit of work to do. He needs to tap his own bowl to

have a second, didn't drop. Just a draw, John, can't see him

sensing anything with this. There is a running bowl on but only one

against. I do not think it will play anything, just hope for the draw.

Lose couple of feet of weight. The front bowl has just dropped. Still

wondering. -- one green. The clock did not stop even though Alan

Thornhill interrupted play, it should have done. Just to tell

Darren the bowl had fallen, that is when you should stop the clock. It

looks like Merv is going to look for the second one on the measure.

We are reliably informed that the shot clock actually, the machinery

just did not work on that occasion. Occasionally you get a little

glitch. A new set of batteries, John! You could be right there.

The jack lengths are given by the umpire, 26 metres, and the minimum

is 23 and it could go on to 29.5. Darren has taken any positives out

of this start even though Mervyn has possibly been on top. He has only

picked up three singles, David, he has restricted Mervyn. He could pick

up on one end with a three and four and the game would be level. Even a

two would be good. This is swinging in behind the green. The Tartan Army

liked that one. A little mini Tartan Army in the corner! I think mini is

the word. There are about 20 of them amongst a crowd of 1500.

They are going to be very fair, they are looking for a good match.

Good weight again, just wrapping round the back, that is a good

position for Darren. So two short bowls by Mervyn King.

This one should be up to the jack and beyond it, he has got no back

position. That jack is stretched by Darren Burnett, you going to be

three up, the back position bowls of a valuable. -- are very valuable. It

is what you were saying, a two or three could be very much making a

difference. He gets a good weighted bowl on the line, it will swing back

in, turn on the jack. He will be on the forehand, but he

need something in there. He's not going to get a shot, he needs the

whole in that position. The jack goes back, he is an heap of trouble.

It is coming down strong now. But it needs to stop. I think Mervyn knew

he overplayed that slightly. A good effort. Yes, he nearly got it into

position to receive the jack, Darren Burnett will certainly be arriving

at this to turn it round the corner. That is very surprising, John. Yes,

I think he wants to be pleased to get onto the card. I could not see

any danger across the front bowl was available to touch. It will go down

as a missed chance, but a single on the card.

That is more like it for the first one. The Scots are getting behind

their men, the Scottish marauder coming down to get their title back.

Come over Hadrian 's Wall, make sure you don't fall!

A big chance here. We have not seen Darren play as well for a few years.

Chatting to him, he feels good, feels like it is available to him

this title. Playing good bowls against rotor phones. -- very tough

opponents. Little bit loose for that. In this opportunity. Do not

get too many chances against Mervyn King.

I think you will find in this game the Darren Burnett. Him, he will

play that longer length to make it more difficult for Mervyn to get a

consistency. He likes the longer jack lengths but he is capable of

playing all the different lengths and the different shots. It will

still come down to the first to bowls, and he dominate on that. --

the first two bowls. It has been a steady final so far.

Just spoiling a little bit on this length, not quite as impressive as

he has been on the previous rounds, and that will give Darren a lot of

confidence. It is a bit warmer than what they

are used to! It certainly will be, they play in all types of winter

weather in some cases. It doesn't matter with those boys, they are a

hardy bunch. They scraped off the ice and play bowls. Do not see too

much of that going on down in Worthing!

Another opportunity for Merv. Needs a big adjustment on the weight here

now. Certainly got the line. It looked like it was struggling a

metal bit. It just made it, not much. Just needed six or eight

inches, to wander in. Darren, one of the few players who

actually does not look down the rink when he is delivering. You will not

see that in the manual anywhere in the world, it is quite unique.

And the result is pretty good to say the least. That is the rule, it is

all about doing the same thing consistently. Nobody has really got

the same action or delivery. You have got to be comfortable in your

own delivery and action. These two players are. That has sneaked in

That is a good adjustment by Darren Burnett, not easy. Feeling his way

into this game now. A slow start, but a dangerous opponent if you let

him settle. It needed a big turn at the end,

just a tad overweight. Darren wasn't impressed with that

delivery. He didn't like it. As long as he does that, he needs a bit of a

slap on the leg, but he was right about this one. Pushed through it.

Interesting, that, David. Just trying to reach it. Yesterday and

the day before, he was just dropping in on good weight, and there is a

bit anxious play there, you sense he just wants to make it happen.

Darren Burnett will have picked up on that, he would have expected

Mervyn to draw that shot. He once the green ball first and he has got

it --he wants the green bowl first. Speaking are asking a couple of

questions of Mervyn King. -- singles all the way so far, he has a

double against Mervyn. It is not his style to go chasing.

It looks like. --light. Very surprising from Mervyn King,

something is not right. Through with his third bowl, short with his

fourth, loses a double. I can't imagine that his nerves from Mervyn

King, he is a very calm sort of chap. -- S. Bowls on two days are

never the same. You can be a king one day and struggle the next.

Three ends in a row that Darren Burnett has scored.

Not far off Micro a good game, Mervyn, it is just a couple of feet

at the moment. He has been used to seeing those bowls zoning on the

jack within a couple of inches this week. It is always difficult for

someone to make a small adjustment. Darren slipping in on the tight

side. Just dropped away. It looks easier for daring to swap

onto the forehand side, he has got his own bowl on that side. -- for

Darren. Good track. Needs to drop inside the

bowl. Very nearly, but he has lifted it up, it could be another shot.

Still slightly favours yours, Merv. Really?

Well, that is really not the Mervyn King we have been seeing in this

event. Slight frustration in his face. He knows he really should have

won a map. -- on that. We favour one, green. Darren is contemplating

playing this bowl. He should do, the way things are going.

The jack through was worth a couple, he will be annoyed. That was a wide

head, there were bowls for himself to come off and if he was narrow, he

would have been getting the green ones.

Trying to encourage it, but it is struggling. It is definitely one,

green now with that movement. Big smile from Malisse year. --

Alicia. One-shot, Mervyn King. The last four ends, it is the run

for home. At this stage, it is very open, you

couldn't really pick a winner in this set. Both players can probably

improve their form slightly. They have not really peppered the jack.

Mervyn needs to get into that rhythm that he showed against Paul Foster

and Nicky Brett. Getting that first bowl in very close and building on

it. That is a very good start. That is the best start in a while from

Mervyn King. You feel Mervyn is going to need to

do a lot of that if he wants to shake Darren. This guy will compete

and keep hanging in there. Now, then, a chance to close out the

second bowl. It is better, two very good bowls

from Mervyn King, certainly better than the last couple of pounds, --

ends, but I can't see Darren Burnett refusing this one.

Very close, gets one of them. It looks good to take a single.

First option was the jack, second was the two bowls and the third was

take one away. It has actually done Mervyn our favour. He has made it

better than Mervyn King in many ways, he is on the front foot now.

Bet is a good bowl, just in line with the jack as well, doesn't leave

Darren much more than a draw -- that is a good bowl.

Good effort. Just needs to sneak up. It is close, you still favour

two to green. Two, green it is. He can afford to be on the high

side, he can drop back quickly with good weight.

No option for Darren but to draw. He is dropping off it, but he has

dropped the ball down, that should give him second.

One-shot to Mervyn King, it is all very, very tight here. Greg has

joined us in the commentary box. We haven't seen the best of Mervyn

yet. He started very, very well, just having a dip for two or three

ends, which Darren took full advantage of. Just signs that Merv

is starting to find it now so, obviously, the next two ends a very

crucial. The expectation, John, is that

Mervyn King always gets within six inches of his first bowl, but it is

not easy to keep that going. It is not easy to get that going game

after game after game. That is a good opener. It is very tight at the

moment. A couple of chances taken and a couple of bad bowls could be

the difference. That is the back-up second bowl to

put the pressure on. Anything behind the jack would have been good. It is

very unlike Mervyn to do that. That is the problem, he is a shade

inconsistent compared to the games against Nicky Brett and Paul

Foster. It is giving Darren a bit of hope and confidence.

Needs to drop in right behind the jack, and it has.

He will have to attack this one. I think he will at this stage in the

set. A good chance of getting at least

one bowl away. No, a conservative draw. That

surprises me, he is an attacking player, Darren Burnett and that

looked like a given. It is short. Well, he has got one more to come

and he is certainly going to need it. His back position is decent, he

has got a red bowl. I was surprised at that, especially the way Darren

has played this week, he has attacked most things when he was in

trouble. He obviously felt it was the right decision.

Mervyn is running for cover. I can't blame him, we are getting them to

the business end of the set, the ninth end. If he scores one or two

here, then he is going to have to start chasing things a little bit.

The King family, enjoying this match. But they may not enjoy this

particular bowl. I have to say he was fortunate, that looked like it

was coming away. He gets a result, it is one away. One-shot, Mervyn

King. Still very tight. Ten shots scored

in nine ends. It might just be a little bit of luck here and there

that might decide this set. Just discussing what shot should

have been played and what happened. They are all experts in the crowd.

Everyone has an opinion. There are refuted experts on the media sites

as well. I bet they won't play those shops in their evening leagues --

shots. They haven't got the skill of these two guys.

There we go. Bang on it. You can't see the chalk on the bowl, but it is

there. There are usually two spray marks put on which indicate a

toucher. One for one that is in the ditch and one that stays in play and

is live. He has got the line, the pace is

good. That is putting the pressure on Mervyn King, it is a super bowl.

Those greens don't look too good down the centre of the rink now.

Well, Mervyn King, once again, relying on his drawing ability. It

was a great effort. And he thought he was close with that, a little

shake of the head. He really can't afford to lose any more than two

shots, though. That last bowl, that is a target, I think, for Darren.

Sits flat. -- off that. He likes it, chasing up after it. It

is in line and it is a third. This is real trouble now for Mervyn

King. There is no real target to hit. He may be taking time out here.

He needs to find one of those big draw bowls now.

Needs to get past the front one. Typical Mervyn King, he just missed

it with the third bowl and he has dipped into that well which just

seems to be full of fantastic bowls. Very, very close for shot.

What a great bowl, three down. He hasn't left an awful lot for Darren

Burnett. He just made that adjustment. Timeout called. The

marker favours one, red. He is looking at this, a little tap

on the backhand, John, would definitely secured a shot, but he

can't reach the jack. There is a shot on the forehand but my goodness

me, it is risky. He is asking about the fourth and fifth shot, just in

case, but will he really play that? It depends how confident he is. If

he is holding the one, he won't. He is playing it, he is looking for a

good connection. No! He has given it away. Very unlucky, really unlucky

with that bowl, it was a brave shot from Darren Burnett at this stage.

The marker had indicated that it was one to red. Darren has three

time-outs remaining. It was probably just a bowl out. He is still one

down. Goodness me, look at that, 11th shots scored in ten ends, just

one double, in the sixth end for Darren Burnett. Jacklin, 25 metres.

-- jack lengths. It is going to be tough for Darren

now, Mervyn will look to close this out quickly with the first two

deliveries. That is a bit of a nervy one from

Mervyn, short and tight. Struggling for pace. It is not bad,

though. But a player of the calibre of

Darren Burnett, he can pop two or three inside that green bowl.

He has come around it. I am not sure about that second shot. The umpire

indicates it is close for second. This head is not building up the way

Mervyn King wants it I am not sure if that has helped.

That is not too bad for Darren, actually. He is in a good position

here. This is an interesting shot.

Attacking this from the backhand. It is all about getting green bowl

connection. That second bowl is two of the three he needs, he has set up

a position where he may even get four. The Scottish contingent from

Inverness. A definite two and close for the third. Timeout called. This

is turning out to be a difficult head. I think any other bowler

here, particularly great to my right, would look to hit that and

clear all of the reds, but Mervyn is a different animal.

He has drawn it. He is playing to the strength of the draw but it

hasn't been as sharp as in previous matches. If it gets the edge of the

red he is in trouble. It has, he could lose the set. I think that was

the wrong shot, I have to be honest. I think he should have cleared the

reds away. Even if he has heard, it is still a chance for Darren. He is

looking to draw the third and if he does nudge the jack into this

position, he is in for four shops, because he will bring in the back

bowls. -- four shots. Timeout called, Darren has two time-outs

remaining. I'm just thinking that wide is OK.

He has the option of falling on the green bowl and falling back again.

The ideal solution is just to get onto the jack. Draw for three and a

touch is a bonus. Exactly. He has played some good bowls on this end,

so he is capable of doing this. You just feel Darren Burnett will not

miss this shot. It is right up his street.

He has gone for the bowl! I really didn't see that as the percentage

shot. I will speak to grade in a moment, but I will let him think

about it first -- I will speak to Greg. He was trying to get the green

bowl out, but goodness me, that was a strange shot to play. Everyone is

saying, what on earth was he trying to do? But Darren Burnett is a

clever player, he felt he was going to take the bowl out and stay in for

three. Didn't fancy the draw. But it has cost them the set. 7-5, Mervyn

King. Jack Lang, 29 metres. Greg, we give you the easy ones. I agree, the

draw was the shot, any touch would have been four. I think if the jack

was at the back of the rings, he was scoring three shots and tying the

set, I think that is why he drove -- the rink. But I agree, the draw was

the shot. He had drawn really well in that end. I know you wouldn't

have played that, but a little touch of anything. He could have drawn a

reasonable area for a third and tight, any touch could have made

four. It is done now, he has two settle down for the third set.

Quite often in the first end of a second set, the player who has won

the set drops off and that has happened here with Mervyn King. He

has dropped a couple of short bowls. You never really expect that with

Mervyn. He is really tottering along here at maybe 60, 70%. And Darren

Burnett will not let him get away with that. Darren is very much in

this match. The crowd haven't yet settled after the drama in that last

end, but Darren is in there and if he can lift his game further, he

could bring this second setback and go to a tie-break. -- set back.

It is just a settling down period therefore Mervyn King. -- now for.

That's better, but the way to do it. -- that is the way to do it. He is

not out of the woods yet. Darren has got to play the same bowl, any

squeeze on the jack is good. Watch with the weight, it just will

not come back. In some respects I am surprised Mervyn is even going up

with this. It is typical Mervyn, he will try to draw another stop. Might

even see him drop to the outside, come right back into the red second

bowl. Would not surprise me if he did, he is very confident on this

backhand for weight. This has been his hand to lead on in this

tournament so far. He is sticking to the backhand. I think it will be a

high line, wide line, Conservative, if it gets back, it is a bonus. He

is not even trying. take your Vucinic even Mervyn does

not wear the -- take the opportunities when Mervyn does not

nail it with his first. It is loose again with the first two

deliveries. I do not know, you hope the final will live up to the

players' standard in the semifinal, but it has not really happened in

this match. It has been exciting but there has not been a consistency.

From Mervyn's point of view, he knows that Darren is a dangerous

opponent. He cannot really afford to be two or three feet away. He just

about got over the line in that set. It is still a very open game at the

moment. It is going to be another job by

Mervyn King, the back position is against him. There were murmurs in

the crowd there, they were not too happy with that last bowl from

Darren. I do not think Darren was too happy with it either! If there

is one thing you do not need when you're out there, it everyone

telling you. A few tuts coming from the front row. We have been there.

It is even worse when you get to the Crown Green game when they are

telling you to get on with it from the front row, start playing if you

bowls! I do not think anything will happen more than a quiet corner, set

off his own red bowl, a good weight. -- quiet draw.

He is right on the edge for line here. He leads the weights to hold

him to the green bowl. He will cost another one.

Still feel there is a couple of gears for these guys to move up,

both of them. It is who is going to make that shift first.

That is the Mervyn King we have come to expect this week.

That is the second bowl, again, John, where he has dropped it

short. Anything behind the jack when you have got front touch is a good

bowl. He will be kicking himself on that one.

He has been slaughtering that jack on the background game after game.

He has moved on to the forehand after dropping short.

It is not through, that will force Darren.

Got to be a runner, John. If he gets right under that, this bowl will

disappear, as well as the other green one. I would not be surprised

to see him playing this. Lining it up.

Just dipped at the last. It looked good for a long time. He is normally

very good at driving. That strike shot for Darren, it is usually very

reliable. Mervyn is in a good position now,

does not want to widen that target. That is what he did not want to do.

He has widened its likely. You can see by his reaction, it is a big

target but he has got no back position. All three could

disappear. I do not expect Darren to miss this one. A little wry smile.

Famous last words, David! He does not missed twice. I figured Mervyn

just expected that, the triple, the trouble is, he should not have been

given the opportunity. Two shots to Darren Burnett. It levels the score.

Really, John, that should not have happened. It was a good drive by

Darren, he took the opportunity well but Mervyn would have been looking

to pass those bowls with the jack and passing behind by 15 inches.

It's dropped aside on unfortunately. He paid the price. Not only that,

but he has lost the jack. It has been quite important in this game.

After two big drives, Darren did not adjust back to the draw on a new

length jack. That is not bad either. So much of

an adjustment from his first role. The slight touch. That is what

Darren is used to doing in his first.

This needs to run a bit. It is lacking pace.

He likes the backhand here, Darren, he is in a good line. He is slotting

these holes in all week. Here it comes again. As it passes the green,

he might have just made it. Very close. Not quite, one red. It is

hard to believe that Mervyn King, 2005, was ranked number 22. 23 the

year of the four and -- the year before and 20 four before that. This

is a rare bowl from Mervyn King, playing a runner. It is not bad. He

played in the qualifiers in 2005, qualified for the World Championship

and won it in 2006. He has been ever present ever since. He has been in

the top eight since 2007. Certainly not easy for Darren

Burnett to add another with this bowl. He has not passed the green.

Now, Mervyn King has got two seconds here. If he has, they will be worth

going for this bowl. It sounds to me he has two seconds. If he has got

the two seconds, he will certainly play weight, plant the green onto

the red, bowl away. Kept it very controlled with this.

He has got the jack! It is going to go into the ditch, going to score a

single. That was the second option. Probably a better option for Darren

Burnett because the bowl out is worth two or three. He will not be

to disappointed, as well. Harriet, Alicia, and Suzanne. Sam is

hiding away. It is more difficult sitting in the

crowd watching them playing, I suppose. Not a lot you can do with

it in the crowd, at least Mervyn is on the green. It is tough, John,

watching, there is no doubt about that. Not easy. Mervyn, now then,

can he start with a good bowl? Great play by Darren, you get past

the green, good effort. I like the way these two players play the game,

they are very good chorus, and they take the chance. There is Lindsay,

Darren Burnett's wife, and his children, doing a bit of tidying up

by the look of it! The wet wipes are out!

Darren had the line but he did not have the weight.

Needs to be gentle on the jack, does not want to move it. Oh, yes! That

was a beauty. Under pressure. -- that was a toucher. We are getting

snippets of both of the players at their best, but neither bowl at just

getting there. Difficult with the final, it is always tough. The

bowling has moved on a pace or two in the second set.

Darren is looking to see if he has got any shot on with weight here,

drive and get the two green bowls away and get the green into the

jack. If his problem is, if you look down the green, that red bowl. The

forehand shot is very hard to get to that bowl with weight. He may not

have any choice, maybe the one to do with. The backhand is something

with, I am not quite sure he has got the angle to come off his own bowl.

The chance of getting a good result out of that, still two against and I

think his own red bowl stayed on the rink. It will be a chance to see

that. In fact, he has two red bowls on the rink. If he has got the two

best backs, that is where Mervyn will go, to split the two red ones

in the back. Certainly wide enough, no doubt

about that. He has to wait to get all the way into position. Years

covering the race but and that position in one go. -- he is

covering the re-spot. He is to down, the only thing is if he will go

three down, but I think you will risk that he will strike. He has

gone once, he will go again. It has gone off the back bowl, did

not go straight through to the ditch but it did not make any difference.

The re-spot has gone to Mervyn King. A fascinating end. That 14- after

five. Very tight, six shots and five ends.

It has been a mixed match as we expected. The first set was Mervyn

King very much going on short jack lengths, Darren Burnett pushing

through. 29, 20 9.5. Look at this. All the way. He has

got it. A dazzler from Darren. Tight bowls in this end. Good

bowling. Taking it on the backhand side. He

has got to pass the green bowl. Slightly under. It stays up, it

could be close to second. Not bad. It is tough out there, Darren. It is

very warm out there. Can he get past the front red one?

Right on the jack! Just the edge. A definite two. Now, Darren, one big

hole here and you set. A fantastic position to level the scores. One

big bowl here. Pushing out, the bowl is making its

way back. Dropping short... Darren has got the last bowl. I wonder if

that might tempt Mervyn for a little bit of weight, a good position with

the two green bowls at the back. Do not want to drive it but maybe just

control the red on to read. This is a hard shot to play. If you

have not stretched through the weight, it will get away very

thickly. He was very neat with the weight, did not need a lot. Barely

passing the jack. You are a definite level now on the rink. I am not sure

if Darren can really add another past the short bowl. It will be a

tough one. With Darren, he did not go to damage

limitation, we thought he might have done. Just had to play a little bit

stronger at it. He has lost the double. It is for-4 -- it was for

all after seven in the first set, it is now four all after six in the

second. All up to grab. It is not easy for either player but you have

to say it is in the mix will both of them. Fascinating stuff, nothing

between the two players. Merv is only scoring once, Darren, a couple

of twos. All up for grabs. One thing we have not seen, Greg, we have not

seen a very short jack lengths or well up the rink, no one is willing

to take the risk of a change of tactics. I think both the players

prefer little bit of leg. I cannot see either of them, unless it went

one-sided. I cannot seek either of them taking that risk to the 23

metres. Thank you, Greg. We will see more loose tolls from

Mervyn today then we have seen in the tournament. It is the pressure

of a world final, I suppose. It is also very, very heart to reach a

peak come quarterfinal and semifinal stage, there is no doubt that these

two players played so well in the semifinals. Having to carry that

forward to the last match. I think Greg is absolutely right, though.

Both these players prefer slightly longer lengths. Not prepared to go

short just yet. Darren is tempted. I think Lindsay

has her hands full with the two girls! They are just keeping her

unused. Daddy is doing something down there, not quite sure! Playing

bowls, that's all they know. They are more worried about the bag of

sweets and the crisps. He has got a chance here, Mervyn,

three short red bowls. His backhand has been so favourable, to the

players. Running a little bit. Did not want

to be that far back, John, he was really looking for a second shot.

That is why he is not too happy. Darren is going to have a look at

this to see if he can get to that green bowl. He has got three

seconds. It is all about pressure at this stage. Whether he can get a

track under his own bowls on the forehand to clean the green away .

Time-out called. The options of the forehand, he has

got to short bowls, he can play into those. If you gets under those, he

gets the green. Not an easy shot, it is a controlled weight shot. That as

a percentage shot into the two red bowls or insight into the green one.

If he plucks the green one out, does not know which way it claims it,

does it? He is looking for a good result. It is wide. I can understand

why he played it. Cannot blame him, to be truthful with you. That was a

good call to play the drive. Mervyn has been a little bit in and out.

Not have been easy to save those three shots. It is advantage Merv

now because he has got a couple of feet to add a second. Now, Mervyn,

normally would pop this one in, Dave. Normally, yes.

Finals bring the different sort of pressure for them. But I don't think

he made a mistake with that one. It has dropped in for the double.

Still for ends to go -- four ends. Darren Burnett will be under

pressure, there are no time-outs left for him.

A bit of movement in the crowd. Some people just making their way down to

their seats. Darren overweight, gone three or

four metres past. The supporting the crowd for Mervyn, they can sense now

that he might just make a run for home now.

Here is the correction, he has got it. What a bowl by Darren Burnett,

he keeps the first shot. It was a massive adjustment from his first

bowl. Just when you think Mervyn is getting on top, he produces a bowl

like that. Struggling to get back with that

one. Darren is not going to draw another

bowl, he is advised to go to the back two greens.

Pretty good. It comes a little bit further, that is very good. A very

deliberate bowl, but coming on the angle was better than straight on

the greens. Intelligent angle was better than straight on

Darren Burnett, he has been around the world scene, indoor and outdoor,

for along time. Played in Australia through a lot, represented Scotland

in the Commonwealth Games. Tactically, he's not going to make

in the Commonwealth Games. too many mistakes, if any.

Mervyn again just sliding. A really good effort, but he is going to lose

Mervyn again just sliding. A really a single. I am surprised Darren is

even going down. He a single. I am surprised Darren is

using this as a practice delivery, just playing to a point on the

rink. I can't imagine he will go anywhere near that short bowl. If

he's going to play the jack along in the next end, he might just put this

through to a long jack length. That is what he's doing. Just to get that

pace in his arm. He doesn't want to waste the bowl giving away anything.

That was a big end for Darren, he only got one but it is a massive and

in terms of the set. Didn't want to lose a shot. -- a massive one.

Having a think about this. You can't blame him. Every bowl, every

decision now, so vital. Second bowl, a missed opportunity.

In the last end, he was through the first bowl and banged, the second

one was right on it. When Mervyn Mrs with the first, you have a chance to

build on it. It is exactly the same with Darren. This is the first, you

want to take a chance, but it is all a bit loose at the moment. If you

can call it loose. It is not bad bowling but not as tight as we have

come to expect. It looks better for weight. He wants

the bowl solid, gets it. It will drop back for another.

That is great grouping from Mervyn, but unfortunately, two feet too far.

He is on a wide line, very good line. It is all down to weight.

Crunches into the green bowl again. Surely Mervyn will not draw here. It

is a clean draw, really, nothing in the way. And a draw, it is.

Have you adjusted to weight? Will it drop? A puff of the cheeks from

Mervyn King tells you that Darren has picked up a trouble. --

Treble. You can't say that was a mistake, because that would be

normal for Mervyn King, to try and draw the shot. A lot of other

players would have played a damage limitation and taken one or two

about but it is not his style. I think it was the right shot to play

for him, nothing in a way but like the other three bowls, he was just

over the weight. A long jack length, as expected, by Mervyn. He

is under some pressure now. The last two ends have scored four

shots against him. The saving grace for Mervyn is he

only needs to tie the set, he doesn't need to win.

If Darren takes a single, then I think we are going into a tie-break.

I just wonder, is Darren Burnett tempted here to go for the jack. It

would be very early. He is an attacking player.

It was wide. Very important now for Mervyn that he gets this one in.

Turn the jack or just come behind it and it creates a problem. Dropped

short and Darren Burnett will go again.

It doesn't look right. It really doesn't look right to me. It is just

so far away. Darren Burnett might just draw this. I expected it to be

somewhat closer. It is a bad bowl, that second one.

It could be costly. This is better. It looks like it is going to drop

away. Mervyn will be making sure with this

one. Needs the jack, and he has got it.

That was the key to that shot, turning the jack, and Mervyn King

realised it. He realised he needed that jack to go past. Two, green. It

doesn't make a lot of difference from the point of view of the shots.

One or two is irrelevant to Darren, he needs to win the last end. But he

wouldn't want to drop a three. That is why he is on the backhand. He has

his own bowls on the way in, so it is worth arriving at it. Overweight.

Mervyn King will be looking to add another here to give a little buffer

going into the last end of the second set. At the moment, it would

be 8-8 and a straight running shoot out effectively. Timeout. Mervyn has

two time-outs remaining. This is a very important bowl by Mervyn.

Certainly out on a wide line, which is usually favoured by Mervyn King.

Will it stop in time? He gave that a bit of a go. He taps his chest, he

thought it was too heavy. Nearly got his own bowl out. Two shops, Mervyn

King. -- to shots. A one end shoot out, effectively.

Darren Burnett all have the last bowl, but Mervyn King will deliver

the jack to his favourite jack length.

In this situation, you sometimes prefer to have the last bowl.

It is a good starter. Just a little bit closer than on your picture at

home, only about ten inches short. The perfect bowl would be between

that green bowl and the jack. I think he has got the jack for a

single. A to G one by Darren. -- great bowl.

Mervyn slipping onto the forehand, easier to come in on the jack. A bit

pacey. Mervyn realises it is only one shot required, so I suggest

Darren will draw this in. He is waving at this one, trying to

encourage it up. Not going to get there.

It is on a wide line again. All about weight. It looks better for

weight. It is whether it gets back in time. Just past it. Well, he has

also offered himself another opportunity to win the bowl off.

Darren has defined a good bowl. If you dropped onto that last green

one, it would be good. I get the feeling this has tie-break

written all over it. This is very good. This is really good, in

behind. That is a beezer. Hard to beat. He might be tempted to play

weight. He can see that red bowls, he could clean the two out. The

angle is there, Mervyn is going for a time-out. Is he going to draw this

on the backhand? I think he is, on to Darren's last bowls.

I don't think it is going to make it back. Great effort. Drops in right

behind, but it is not enough. All credit to Darren Burnett, he fought

back really hard in that second set. Lifted A1 and three, which

brought the match to Mervyn King -- a one.

Darren won the toss and has given the jack to Mervyn on the first end.

Tie-breaks are always hard to call, the rules change. We are not in the

situation of accumulated shops, it is just take the shot. Darren

Burnett would generally be the more attacking player. We think back to

some of the great tie-break and we have had over the years and some of

the players who won most of them, players like Ian Bond, who was very

much an attacking player and he won an extraordinary amount of tie-break

matches. Judging by that answer, you have

avoided my question. You still haven't given me who you fancy. I

was hoping that and so would fob the issue! It hasn't. -- that and so

Darren Burnett has won the last 4 ends, three of the last four in the

second set. He is very strong at the moment,

Darren. Finishing well. Coming into the home straight.

Mervyn is going to have to dig deep. He must have thought he was so close

to winning the championship in the last set. Yes, he had chances, but

he just hasn't been as consistent. The big three in the ninth and was

the problem. -- ninth end. That has maybe given Mervyn a

chance. Play down at this with place. -- pace.

Very controlled. He has got his own bowls on the inside if it dives

away. It is diving away. Two, red. Back position is now against Darren

but he has got the last bowl. He has got to go deep with this, surely. Or

at least of the side of the jack. -- off to the side.

He has pushed it out wide, very sensible. He has got it solid. Well,

it is not ideal. No, but I would rather be in Darren's position than

Mervyn's at the moment. He will do very well to get out of this.

This will be a miracle shot if he plays it.

Going for the dead draw. Not a lot of choice in the circumstances.

Big shots when big matches and that was a big shot -- win big matches.

What a bowl, under that sort of pressure, and Mervyn is staying

calm, as he needs to. But I bet his heart is beating fast. My goodness

me, that was a good bowl. Darren will play into this. Got it.

There is a green bowl lurking the back there. Has it run enough for

Mervyn King? This is going to be close. Darren says he has got the

shot. We knew there was a green one there but the jack just rolled on.

Two A to G three by both players. Had to trust that he would get a

good connection -- two great bowls. Live sport drama, we love it. That

looks like it is in. Yes. He has held onto it. What an escape that

was. First game, Darren Burnett. The Tartan Army in the crowds cheering,

Darren Burnett getting the first end. If Mervyn King had have held

onto that shot, it would have been an unbelievable result. What a great

bowl. Two great bowls from these players. Mervyn with a wonderful

dead draw. Darren had the courage to come back and play that running

shot. He had percentages, it was a much wider target, but you have to

hit the target under that pressure and that is what he is good at. We

have been talking about that attacking shot that Darren Burnett

has. Creeping up to the jack. That is a

great bowl. It is edge of your seat stuff, this.

I'm not going to predict. You just don't know where this is going.

Nobody at home will be leaving their seats to put the kettle on. It is

too close to call. There is no harm having deep

position. Four inches, I don't think Mervyn

will be comfortable that it is close enough to win this one.

Dropped under, you would expect Darren Burnett to reach this with a

little bit of weight if he wants to, as a percentage shot, bowl out or

jack through to the back once. Not a great bowl from Mervyn Thomas but if

Darren gets onto the jack, Mervyn is in trouble. -- from Mervyn, but it

Darren gets onto the Here it comes. Missed it by a

fraction. I think forehand would be good here

for Mervyn. I think he will go to those red bowls. I don't think he

can afford to draw to it right now. Just has to push through this a

little bit, make sure he is reaching.

Dropped short. He has got a second bite because he has covered the

drive shaft, so he will leave Darren the Open draw. What a chance this

is. He has covered the takeout shot, but not betrayal of the jack, and

that is what Darren will be looking for.

That is the chance. Darren's wife and two girls, getting into it now.

We love it when it gets to the last end, don't we, John, of a major

championship. This is the number-1 championship in the world you just

do not get any better than this, no matter where you play bowls. It is

going to the wire. Merv has got the first bowl to it,

Darren has got the last bowl. This is where you want to play a front

toucher, right on the nose. It is where you would like to have the

last bowl as well, John. Mervyn did not look too happy with

that one. Dropped it a bit. Darren is playing his favourite

backhand side. There it is. A front toucher. That

is a great call. It is going to be very hard to beat. He would be

tented by a draw in this needs to hurry. Not quite! What

a great effort. Still one red. She cannot believe it!

They are getting a bit hot and bothered out there! This is great

stuff, it really is. It is sensibly not too far, going

deep, Aaron Bennett aware that he has the last delivery. This is a

problem for Mervyn. Does he play for the split or just try and turn his

own bowl over? I would play for the split. In case he gets a bowl on the

jack. He has another one to recover. I would definitely play it but I do

not have to, thankfully! I think he has to give it a chance.

Asked to open it up in some way. -- he has two. Goodness me! It is

getting very tense here. There are 1500 people in here and not sound.

He is playing a wide backhand drop! I cannot believe he is playing

this! It is such a hard shot to play. He has got another bowl ahead

which is pretty good. He is leaving it to the last bowl. That is a good

bowl that he has played there, a good position. If he gets the split

with the next one. That will be opportunity still be there? If I was

Darren, I would be tempted to try and leave one in the way. Then you

are asking him to draw within three inches. A blocker could be the

solution. I don't think he should be out

there. He has left that as a target. There is a chance.

I think the split is good here, the inside or even the outside of the

last bowl. This is a chance for Mervyn.

I think he has helped it. That has gone. And Darren Burnett keeps the

third and of the set, winds its 2-1 and takes the world singles

championship. What a wonderful match. The policeman from Arbroath,

up against very much the local favourite, Mervyn King, and he had

taken it two sets to one. What a wonderful performance, no doubt

about that. Mervyn King took the first set 7-5, Darren took the

second 10-8, and over the line in the tie-break, 2-1. A great match,

Darren came strong at the end. A worthy champion. I think on the day

he was the better man. The first set was always going to be

a tight one, 4-4 after seven, 7-4 after ten. Darren Burnett took a

risk, this went away from him. Peter can risk again for the last bowl,

went against him. Took a single but lost it 7-5. Mervyn King, so good at

pulling the jack back. That was the double he needed to go 8-8 in the

second set. This was a great bowl for Darren Burnett. Making sure he

was not left with one bowl on the head, dropped it down to the double.

He won it 10-8. And that was the hit with the last bowl in the first end

of the tie-break, he won that on a measure. Advantage toucher. --

advantage Burnett. Just failed with the last bowl on the second end,

looking for the jack back to win, last bowl of the championship for

Mervyn King. Peopled it inside and it has gone. Darren Burnett, hands

in the act, the world professional champion for the first time. Well

done, Darren. Not going to be much in the statistics!

That was a great game. Darren Burnett, really out of the blue in

the last six years he struggled a little bit, he has come back strong

in the final, thoroughly deserved to win it.

Congratulations to both men on producing a superb final. First we

will talk to Mervyn. You have played some outstanding bowls this week,

and produced some good stuff today. How proud are you obvious

performance? If they said I was game to get the final when I started I

would have taken that any day. I played well, not so good today but

he had played some big bowls under pressure. I would like to thank the

crowd, they were fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. Just before we

talk to Darren, you said about playing big bowls today, you

produced some special moments. In a normal match, perhaps you might have

come out on top. Once again, all week long, you have something of the

magical touch back again. I have, it would have been nice to have one.

Darren has got it. It is half an inch or something, it could have

been a different story. He played well and delivered a win. You can be

proud of your performance. Darren, here we go. 2014 world champion, how

good does that sound? It sounds absolutely unbelievable.

Came down to the first, for the first time ever for the watcher and

chips, not in great form, not really looking for anything rather than

getting to the first game. Maybe I have been more relaxed. Today we

played both under what we have been playing. Merv was the more

consistent. The big bowls came at the right time. I am delighted. De

secret is -- the secret is to come in in poor form! You have played

some great games and produced some tremendous bowls. The nerves today

for man in the final for the first time, how were they? It was the

first game of the tournament where I can say there were plenty of nerves.

I have never been in a final and this man has been too tired to the

event. I have been OK but I have been watching him, he has been on

the jack every time. When you won, you looked up at your wife and kids,

they have been here all week, giving you great support. How was it to

look up and see their support? Absolutely brilliant, it is a long

tournament and to have them come down for the last week of the event

has been brilliant. The fact that they are here today to share the

moment is brilliant. The Tartan Army are here as well! Absolutely, the

crowd were great, that is what makes the aim. The crowd were fantastic.

Burnett! We have seen some fabulous bowls

here this week at Potters, and there is more to come because later this

year, the sport will be playing a key role in the Commonwealth games

in Glasgow. 2014 is a bumper year in the sport of bowls. As well as the

world indoor Championships, several bowlers are looking forward to the

Commonwealth games where the sports will be one of the most popular

events. We met up with the participant at Kelvingrove. The

Scottish team for Glasgow will not be finalised until March, but the

depth of talent to choose from events at present problem to have

for the head coach and . The selection process is really key,

from the very beginning we selection criteria so we have got the best

team on form at any particular time. We have got to separate our emotions

from selecting the team and I always said I would select the best team as

if my life depended on it and the guys all know that. Being

centrestage in Scotland will be a special moment for even the most

seasoned bowls campaigners. Foster and Marshall have one pretty much

every thing in the game including repairs gold in the 2006 Melbourne

games. They will have the adrenaline pumping like never before. The

Commonwealth games will be huge, everyone is talking about it. There

is still couple of months left to see who will be selected, there are

11 guys are still left who are all good enough so see what happens. You

cannot get a bigger spectacle than playing in the Commonwealth Games in

your own country. If I got picked to play and come away with a medal,

obviously gold would be icing on the cake. The top-quality Kelvingrove

green facilities sit right at the heart of Glasgow civil centre and at

the shadow of the museum, the Art gallery building. Come July, this

will be practised -- further home support. It is a great place to

showcase the sport. Where are the stands going to be? It is going to

be there, but bigger, and stand up there. It is going to be seats

around here. Capacity, harmony people? 5000. It is going to be

pretty amazing. This venue at Kelvingrove, it is

probably the best bowling venue I have ever been to. Even coming here

today in January, it still gives you goose bumps when you look at the

architecture and the history of this place. We are in the heart of

Glasgow here and we have got greens, six greens, just amazing. The

support from the Scottish public will be incredible so we are really

looking forward to it. The crowds are filing away behind

me. Earlier this week, they were able to enjoy seeing two legends of

the Commonwealth games laying on the portable rink in an exhibition

match. A couple of men with amazing 15, wealth games appearances --

Commonwealth games appearances between them.

Our first player has appeared in a record eight Commonwealth Games, and

has many medals to his credit. Ladies and gentlemen, the 1982 gold

medallist, give it up for Willie Wood, MBE!

And after winning six Commonwealth games, it is no wonder why our next

player is rated as one of the best in the sport. The reigning

Commonwealth games singles champion, give it up for Robert Weale!

Willie Wood, a motor mechanic with his own business for most of his

life. Needed to be like that because he was away so much. He has been

around the world a few times. Robert has recently come back from New

Zealand where he played in the outdoor Champion of champions event,

first tour back after the injury he suffered, he will be hoping to go to

the Commonwealth games in July with full fitness to defend his title.

There should be plenty of time, I am sure sport Wales have got physios on

the job, there should be plenty of time, I am sure sport Wales have got

physios on the job, various other things dieticians, nutritionist,

physios. In our day, you just turned up! Yes, you took your toothbrush

and your bag of bowls! That was it, get on with it, guys!

Close, very close with this. Oh, yes! He does not give up, does he?

Three inches away! Oh, Robert, honestly.

It is like a legends' tour, isn't it? We should get you down there,

pricey! Willie is taking it fiercely, that was a great bowl.

We could have brought you down there along with Tom, spreading the decade

as well. Robert, you are in deep trouble!

Not sure if Willie is trying to draw another one here. Very nearly! For

old Robert. He is out there, defending champion. I match against

him -- the match is against him and service the crowd! He does not have

much of a chance! He has a wry smile. And Willie has a boulder.

That makes it worse. Look at the concentration.

He is going to stop! He is going to drop back for the shot, well played,

Robert Weale! Goodlad. Saved the day for the modern player.

Welsh pride is reinstated. I think I had someone in the crowd saying, oh,

no! Confirmation from Sandra McLeish.

Started well. It is coming back now. Just make it! The shot and the much

do Robert Weale. He gets the bragging rights. Two Commonwealth

legends, and Robert Nix it at the end. That'll put him in good form to

defend his title come July. Well done, Robert Weale. Brilliant last

bowl to take this mini match 2-1. A narrow defeat for Willie but pride

in his performance, and also pride in the amount of medals we are

seeing here for the Commonwealth games from Williams would -- Willie

Wood and Robert Weale. Form is temporary class is permanent! It is!

I have been lucky enough to hold my form for along time. All good things

come to an end. I had to retire after 45 years playing for Scotland.

I still play out do -- that was outdoors, I still play indoors but

it is coming to an end as well. It was impressive this morning will

stop you to do under the cosh. He has aways been great, I have known

him a long time, ever pleasant and I have always had a pleasant time with

him. It was 1982 when I started, I played him. Was in 1966 when you

started? Yes, it was. Still going strong today. We remember the

Commonwealth games in Delhi in 2010. You competed at the games for

the eighth time, became the oldest competitor to compete at the

Commonwealth Games. Very proud moment for you? Yes, it was. I have

done it Commonwealth games. I was in the squad went it was in Edinburgh

in 1986, but they declared me a professional and I had to pull out.

I pulled out in one in Melbourne because I did not like the setup,

they changed the game altogether by playing it into set and I pulled out

of the squad so that might have been ten! It is a good thing it isn't,

because Rob is about to make his eighth appearance in the Common

rough games, equalling your record. Presuming everything is fit he will

be there in Glasgow? It is only selection yet, I have owned a seven

so far. I am just proud to make the squad this year. To equal the record

such as his is immense. I had the pleasure of being in Delhi when you

won the Commonwealth games, I saw you winning the medal and the

reaction is something I will never forget. What about you? Winning that

tie-break in Delhi, against an Australian who have always not been

my favourite opponent in finals... It for me was great to get one over

the old enemy, if you like. The emotion at the end, it's just came

over me. To finally win gold after winning bronze and silver in

singles, it was one of the proudest moment of my life. The BBC will be

covering the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year. He missed out in

Edinburgh in 1986 but he was saying to me yesterday how it cited you are

about the games being in Glasgow? I think it will be fantastic. The

whole setup is up to standard, everything is going well. They have

got good venues, I have been in Kelvingrove, had a couple of ends,

it'll be an oppressive setup. You have got to be Chris Hoi velodrome,

brand-new. Hampden Park for the athletics, Celtic Park for the

opening ceremony. Everything is going according to plan and it is

four years, it is hard work. It takes four years to organise a big

thing like that! There is nothing to do every day. -- something to do

every day. Congratulations to you guys. Good luck if you make it to

here all week is you have been seeing some outstanding bowls, here

are our candidates for shot of the tournament.

Trying his best to hold up. Oh, yes! Just made it! He wasn't sure for a

long time. Just got in off the front bowl. A little regular from Andy.

Just about enough weight. The weight on that line is pretty

close. This is a big effort by Jonathan Ross. Very close! He has

got three touchers definitely, has he got four? He has! And the

competition for four touchers is a ?4000 in the equal to finals.

He is trying to play across it, get onto the front bowl or the jack. He

might take his own way but others to cover. What a result! He played it

off the backhand. He knew it would be easier to play that role in

weight on. Very well played. Stonking bowl from Mervyn King.

I think she is close, getting something here.

Catherine just sticking to the draw, getting a close one. This one looks

better. She needs the bowl or the jack, got the jack, even better! A

very good bowl. That brings her back green into play as well.

Merv has played a lot of good bowls but he has knock got the advantage.

He has got it again. He is asking for a runner here which

is unusual. To bowls, brilliant! An absolutely brilliant results from

the 18-year-old. Running bowl here, not a full drive. A perfect

connection, takes the two reds away. She is a good talent.

Mervyn trying hard with this. Has he got the jack? Has he ever! What

about all! What a fantastic shot. A classic Mervyn King bowl, Jonathan

Ross has laid to brilliant and he comes back and a system.

Well, Mervyn King came up short in the final but Corky had a good look

through all of those the final but Corky had a good look

through all of shots and you have decided that Mervyn King's shot was

the number one. Yes, we have seen a lot of good conversion shots and hit

shot, but the draw shot was the king this week and Mervyn

well. There was no space there, we thought he was bound to hit into it

with pace, seven or eight inches between the two bowls and he drew it

back. Jonathan Ross had a score of three and was in with a great chance

and Mervyn King took it all away from him with that bowl, it was

fantastic and set up Jonathan for the four touchers. Mervyn produced

that over and over again. We will talk about those four touchers, it

is a very rare thing in the sport of bowls, and there is a prize for the

four touchers. Jonathan Ross, even though he didn't progress through

the match, he earned a nice tidy sum. Yes, it turned out to be ?1000

per bowl. We weren't sure at first, this was the second and we are not

concerned about anything happened, it is exciting. That one just

sneaked the jack. Where the crowd aware at this point? They weren't

and we hadn't taken up too much thought about it. Whenever Mervyn

moved the jack, it suddenly became open. I have watched this 15 or 20

times and to be truthful, I can't see it moving. Just a gentle kiss.

The key was looking at it from a different angle, the officials moved

in right away, so well done to them and to Jonathan Ross. ?4000 for four

touches, those are just some of the amazing bowls we have seen this week

that perhaps might have got you inspired. The WBT decision to make

the women's World Matchplay tournament qualification event for

the first time this year has proven a great success and a final

dominated by an 18-year-old newcomer, Catherine Bagnall, the new

of Potters. -- Katherine. It was proved to be a game for all ages.

That year, the twins lit up the competition but they didn't make the

cut this year the 2014 Championships, although Kelly will

be playing at the Commonwealth Games. But they have been spreading

the gospel to youngsters in Newport as part of the BBC's Get Inspired

campaign, to get young people playing sport for health and

enjoyment. We are doing the coaching to see how the youngsters are doing,

to see how they are progressing and how to bring the fun factor into

bowls. Go on, this time, big Katherine.

Everybody sees bowls as an old person's sport, so we are trying to

get youngsters involved. And it clearly isn't, there are a lot of

youngsters here and it is really interesting, it has done really

well. Former world champion and BBC commentator John Price is head of

development for the sport in Wales and knows the importance of getting

people on the rink and inspired by the game. We are looking to sell the

game to all ages and we are looking at development, the Middle age

groups, people coming from other sports like Rugby football and the

younger age groups to retirement. It is a great game whatever age. Having

the girls then with the youngsters and the juniors, they are icons in

Welsh bowls, it is nice for the youngsters to get involved in the

coaching side and get involved with the clubs as well and we want to

encourage that as the Welsh bowls Federation, produce young

ambassadors who are going to do the job for us and encourages into the

sport. For Kerry and Kelly, involvement in bowls has proven to

be alive changing experience, with international honours and world

travel -- life changing. But they came to the sport almost by

accident. Every Sunday... Every Sunday, we used to play badminton,

table tennis, and we both had ?1 left in our pockets only ask at

reception what we could do for ?1, and they said the only thing going

is bowls. We looked at each other and said, what is that? They took us

right to the back of the stadium, you wouldn't know it is there, and

we went in there and they were so friendly, so we have done it ever

since. And we have become really good, playing internationals. We

love it, it is a really enjoyable sport. The great advantage of the

game of bowls is anyone can give it a try at any age, so we took light

heavyweight champion Nathan cleverly to Newport Bowls club to have a go.

We asked if he was hard enough. Not bad, not bad. As well as a top

boxer, Nathan is a Cardiff University maths graduate, so he

knows it too thing about -- a thing two about accuracy. It was great, it

was different from the intensity of boxing. Something like bowls is

relaxed, getting the angles and the weight and trajectory right. It is

part and parcel of the game. I think I did quite well. It is a really

good game for people coming into sport, if you are competitive and

want to keep competitive, this is a good game. One of the most famous

bowlers was Colin Jones, a famous boxer and is a very good player, he

has played internationally indoor and outdoor, so it shows you can

come in from another sport. Sport is a massive factor growing up. It is a

massive factor in their lives, and it has played a massive part in my

life, besides education, as a past time and a hobby to keep your mind

active and keep you physically fit. It is very important.

I would say definitely give it a go. Come down on Sunday when they have

coaching and give it a go, see what you think. It is a really, really

good sport. You can have a get and a really good time. It is refreshing

to have some youngsters coming through and the Packer twins are

leading the way, and hopefully it will inspire a lot of other

youngsters to get involved. Get Inspired is all about having a go

Well, a young lady who produced an inspired performance earlier this

week was 18-year-old Katherine Rednall in the ladies' final. The

family of Katherine Rednall are just ready to go mad at this.

You don't get players at this level playing that well. That looks like

it is very close to number two. I wouldn't be surprised if Rebecca

just shake hands with this. That is absolutely definitely two.

It is all over, two shots. Well, the defending champion loses out in this

year's final of the World Matchplay ladies singles, and I have to say,

Katherine Rednall, the 18-year-old from Ipswich, was absolutely superb.

It was an exhibition from her from about the second or third end. Her

family very happy, and so they should be. She was cool, she was

calm, she was brilliant. The 2014 ladies match play champion,

Katherine Rednall! Well, yes, indeed Katherine Rednall

was inspired but so was the man to my left, Darren Burnett, an

inspirational performance. You have had a few minutes to let it all sink

in, what is the feeling now? It hasn't changed, it will probably

take several days... In fact, it will probably be after we go to

Blackpool before I really take it all in. I have got the world

championship, I know that, but it is hard to take it in. Any chance to

check your messages yet? Yes, lots of good friends, lots of good

bowling friends have flooded the texts, I have got through some of

them. Just tell us about the moment when you lifted the 2014 World

Indoor Bowls Championships and it was yours. It is an unbelievable

feeling. I have obviously knocked on the door before, and a good few

years ago I was probably playing at my peak and you wonder if you have

missed your chance. I got the final this year, I was playing well and I

thought I had to grab it. Corky, as Darren says, there are times when an

athlete or a performer knows they are playing well and when they miss

out, they maybe feel the chance has gone, but in the sport of bowls, you

get another chance. You can, but there are so many good players

coming through like Stewart Anderson, Paul Foster riding the

crest of a wave, and you think, I haven't played at my best for six or

seven years and you are coming back every year thinking there is a

chance. I think Darren was slightly different this year. He relaxed and

all of a sudden it started to happen. I did say to him, it was the

best I have seen him play for a long time. Reminders, because in the

interview immediately after the match can be said you came here not

dealing in any decent form -- remind us. Yes, I didn't think I was

playing my best and if you're not doing that against these guys, you

won't win games, so I wasn't playing where I wanted to be. I definitely

relax. I came to win the first round and after that, I just enjoyed my

bowls and it has worked hand-in-hand. You must have watched

Moulin in the week and thought, gosh, he's playing well? -- Mervyn.

Sometimes, I turned the telly off and stopped watching them! He is a

great player and I knew I had to mix it up. What have the girls said you

can meet your trio of girls, including those two naughty kids?

They are a little young to fully understand that I'm sure they will

look back on it as a great moment in our lives. Corky, we have seen some

matches this week that have been right up there with the best of the

best. How would you sum up the tournament? Interesting from the

point of view that the draw shot has been wonderful this week and has had

crucial moments. The match against Nicky Brett with Mervyn was out of

this world, the two semifinals were great games, and you are sort of

thinking, can it get better? When it gets to the last Katherine Rednall

in -- the last bowl in a tie-break, it doesn't get better. Thank you

amazing bowls. Darren Burnett is Crown the 2014 World Indoor Bowls

Championships it is fair to say he's going to leave Potters very happy.
