With the Rio Olympics tantalisingly close,

0:10:450:10:47

I've been catching up with leading British sportsmen and women,

0:10:470:10:50

the ones who will carry the hopes of a nation,

0:10:500:10:52

and that's why I'm here at the English Institute of Sport,

0:10:520:10:54

a state-of-the-art facility in Sheffield,

0:10:540:10:57

to meet the greatest sportswoman in the world.

0:10:570:11:00

All round, there is no-one to beat her.

0:11:000:11:02

She's halfway through an average day of training

0:11:020:11:04

but that's only average if you're Jessica Ennis-Hill.

0:11:040:11:08

Jessica Ennis-Hill was the face of the 2012 Olympics.

0:11:080:11:12

Over the course of two days, she hurdled, ran, jumped and threw

0:11:120:11:16

her way to gold-medal success and into the hearts of the nation.

0:11:160:11:21

In Beijing 2015, just 13 months after the birth of her son,

0:11:210:11:25

she completed a fairy-tale comeback

0:11:250:11:27

to once more become heptathlon world champion.

0:11:270:11:31

And now, Jess is preparing

0:11:310:11:32

for perhaps her most difficult challenge -

0:11:320:11:35

defending her heptathlon title at the Rio Olympics.

0:11:350:11:39

I want to discover how she coped with the pressure

0:11:390:11:43

of being a gold-medal favourite at London 2012...

0:11:430:11:46

When I actually crossed the line and I knew I'd won, it was just...

0:11:460:11:50

I could breathe out a sigh of relief.

0:11:500:11:52

..how she balances training with being a mum

0:11:520:11:55

and learn what type of mum she is...

0:11:550:11:57

I am competitive and I do sometimes hear myself saying,

0:11:570:12:00

"Oh, Reggie's done this!"

0:12:000:12:02

..and most importantly,

0:12:020:12:03

I'm here to find out if she can defend her Olympic title in Rio.

0:12:030:12:07

I've done it in the past so I know that I can go on and do it again.

0:12:070:12:11

I love the fact that there are hundreds of schoolchildren

0:12:130:12:16

gathered behind us for a school sports day

0:12:160:12:18

and you would've been one of those kids, wouldn't you?

0:12:180:12:21

Yeah, I remember sports days and going out on the field

0:12:210:12:24

and trying athletics for the first time.

0:12:240:12:27

And why then choose to test yourself over seven events

0:12:270:12:30

rather than just picking one?

0:12:300:12:32

Yeah, well, it wasn't my choice, to be honest.

0:12:320:12:35

I met Tony and he specialised in coaching decathlon and heptathlon

0:12:350:12:39

and he just said, "Try these events and see how you get on."

0:12:390:12:43

I didn't really know what I was kind of getting myself into

0:12:430:12:46

and I didn't know how it worked and before I knew it,

0:12:460:12:49

I was training for it and competing in the heptathlon.

0:12:490:12:52

To be here in Sheffield, which is the place you grew up,

0:12:520:12:55

it's where you went to school, it's where your life is,

0:12:550:12:58

do you feel here that you can just be Jess?

0:12:580:13:00

Yeah, definitely.

0:13:000:13:02

I am just completely at home here and like you said,

0:13:020:13:05

I went to school here, all my family are here,

0:13:050:13:08

I'm in this environment that I'm really comfortable in

0:13:080:13:11

and, you know, the people around the city are great

0:13:110:13:13

and everything's really familiar and this is how I work at my best

0:13:130:13:17

and this environment is incredible.

0:13:170:13:19

To have this elite facility here, I'm very lucky.

0:13:190:13:22

What is your regular training day? What do you do and for how long?

0:13:220:13:26

So training every day is completely different and we try

0:13:260:13:29

and cover all the different events.

0:13:290:13:31

We spend a little bit more time on some of my weaker events

0:13:310:13:33

and obviously, now Reggie's here, I've limited my training to,

0:13:330:13:37

you know, not being down at the track all day.

0:13:370:13:39

I come down in the morning

0:13:390:13:40

and get a good three or four hours of quality training

0:13:400:13:43

and then have the afternoon off and then I do sessions at home

0:13:430:13:47

so everything's really mixed up at the moment but it works really well.

0:13:470:13:51

Is it always about scoring a certain number of points,

0:13:510:13:54

or is it about beating other people?

0:13:540:13:57

Do you have to be quite ruthless in saying, right,

0:13:570:13:59

that's my opposition, this is what I need to do to beat them?

0:13:590:14:02

I think it depends on the year and the circumstances.

0:14:020:14:06

For me, last year wasn't necessarily about having the best point score.

0:14:060:14:11

It wasn't about PBing,

0:14:110:14:12

because I knew I wasn't able to do that at that stage.

0:14:120:14:15

But it was about winning medals,

0:14:150:14:17

it was about beating people, essentially.

0:14:170:14:20

But in previous years, it's definitely been about

0:14:200:14:22

improving each year and bettering my PBs, and bettering my scores.

0:14:220:14:27

And do you feel now that when you walk into an arena,

0:14:270:14:30

particularly a World Championships or an Olympics,

0:14:300:14:33

that the rest of them go...? CLARE GASPS

0:14:330:14:36

There's a bit of an aura of invincibility about you

0:14:360:14:39

and that can be worth something.

0:14:390:14:41

I don't necessarily feel that.

0:14:410:14:43

I still feel very much the same athlete that

0:14:430:14:46

I felt before I'd won any medals and any championships.

0:14:460:14:49

But I think last year was a big year.

0:14:490:14:53

Before I went to the World Championships, my husband,

0:14:530:14:56

Andy, was like, "You'll be surprised how people react differently

0:14:560:15:00

"when you're there competing."

0:15:000:15:01

And I was like, "No, I don't think so,

0:15:010:15:03

"I've just come back and I've not done a lot of training,

0:15:030:15:06

"I'm not particularly prepared, they think it'll be just the same."

0:15:060:15:09

Yeah, I think people do act differently

0:15:090:15:12

when certain competitors are there

0:15:120:15:14

but it's the dynamics of the heptathlon

0:15:140:15:17

and it's the mental side of it as well as the physical side.

0:15:170:15:20

Is it quite a tight club?

0:15:200:15:21

I mean, do you get on with everybody or is that impossible?

0:15:210:15:26

No, it is, it's a really nice environment.

0:15:260:15:29

It's a nice set of girls

0:15:290:15:31

and everyone wants to beat each other, everyone wants to be the best

0:15:310:15:34

and on top of the podium but everyone has that mutual respect

0:15:340:15:37

for how hard you have to train for a heptathlon

0:15:370:15:40

and, you know, the hours you have to put in

0:15:400:15:42

and just generally how hard it is

0:15:420:15:44

to complete a heptathlon and do it well.

0:15:440:15:46

You always seem incredibly patient and kind and nice.

0:15:460:15:49

There must be things that frustrate you and annoy you.

0:15:490:15:53

JESSICA CHUCKLES

0:15:530:15:55

I'm not a patient person at all, I'm very impatient

0:15:550:15:58

and I want everything yesterday.

0:15:580:16:01

I think that's an athlete quality as well.

0:16:010:16:05

But I know I do appear quite happy on the track

0:16:050:16:07

and everything's going quite well and positive,

0:16:070:16:10

but inside, I'm nervous and I have elements of frustration

0:16:100:16:15

and I want to be better than I am

0:16:150:16:17

and all those different things

0:16:170:16:19

that are going on in my mind, I just don't necessarily show it.

0:16:190:16:22

And I've heard you hate people being late.

0:16:220:16:24

Yes! Tony is always late.

0:16:240:16:25

-Is he? CHUCKLING:

-Yeah.

0:16:250:16:27

Why does he do that to you?

0:16:270:16:29

I know, it drives me and the training group mad.

0:16:290:16:31

But, yeah, I'm definitely the kind of person that's always on time

0:16:310:16:35

and I think that's just been embedded in me

0:16:350:16:37

from being a child growing up with my parents,

0:16:370:16:40

they're always on time, but Tony is always late.

0:16:400:16:43

And what makes you laugh?

0:16:430:16:45

I think I've got quite a good sense of humour

0:16:450:16:47

and the people around me, I like having banter

0:16:470:16:50

with the training group and family and people like that make me laugh.

0:16:500:16:54

Sport is, generally speaking, pretty unglamorous.

0:16:540:16:57

You know, one's got to get dirty and sweaty

0:16:570:16:59

and your hair's not always going to be perfect.

0:16:590:17:01

But does it matter to you and is it important then

0:17:010:17:05

to be able to look nice when the occasion demands it?

0:17:050:17:08

You want to feel comfortable and happy when you're competing.

0:17:080:17:12

It's not necessarily about being glamorous,

0:17:120:17:14

you're not going to be glamorous when you're competing.

0:17:140:17:17

You know, I'll try and make myself look reasonably nice

0:17:170:17:19

before the start of the heptathlon, before the hurdles,

0:17:190:17:22

but by the end, it's all gone wrong and you're sweaty

0:17:220:17:25

and your hair's everywhere but, you know, if you've done well,

0:17:250:17:28

then it doesn't really matter.

0:17:280:17:29

And still, it's a very important visual image

0:17:290:17:31

for women around the world, actually, that you can be

0:17:310:17:35

competitive and ambitious and muscular and still feminine.

0:17:350:17:38

Yeah, definitely. I think it's so important because, you know,

0:17:380:17:42

I remember being at school as like a 13-, 14-year-old girl

0:17:420:17:44

and, you know, girls don't want to do sport,

0:17:440:17:47

they don't want to be active because it's not seen as feminine.

0:17:470:17:50

You do get sweaty and you've got to have muscles

0:17:500:17:53

but it's nice that hopefully myself

0:17:530:17:56

and other female athletes can show that you can be muscular

0:17:560:17:59

but you can be really great at what you do

0:17:590:18:01

and you can be feminine, you can wear dresses

0:18:010:18:03

and do nice things, but you can perform and be aggressive

0:18:030:18:06

and a great competitor on the track.

0:18:060:18:08

So is it important to you, that sort of broader message?

0:18:080:18:10

It is, it is.

0:18:100:18:12

Because I think role models and women who are strong and confident

0:18:120:18:17

in what they do, but feminine, can share a different side of sport.

0:18:170:18:21

It's really important.

0:18:210:18:23

You were voted by Sports Illustrated

0:18:230:18:25

the fittest female sports star on the planet.

0:18:250:18:28

Which is quite an accolade, isn't it?

0:18:280:18:30

Yeah, those things make me feel really embarrassed, to be honest.

0:18:300:18:34

But, yeah, it's pretty special.

0:18:340:18:36

And could you imagine a time,

0:18:360:18:38

when maybe you're not a full-time athlete any more, where, actually,

0:18:380:18:41

that would be your role - motivating others to get as fit as they can be?

0:18:410:18:44

Yeah, definitely.

0:18:440:18:45

I think I'm at the stage of my career now where I'm not going to

0:18:450:18:48

be competing for that much longer, and I'm starting to think about

0:18:480:18:51

things that I'm passionate about and things I want to do in the future.

0:18:510:18:55

Yeah, definitely, for me, it's always about getting people active.

0:18:550:18:59

You don't have to be Olympic champion or anything like that.

0:18:590:19:02

Just set yourself challenges, getting families active,

0:19:020:19:05

and young kids and that kind of thing is something that's

0:19:050:19:08

really important to me.

0:19:080:19:10

In July 2014, just two years before Rio,

0:19:100:19:13

Jess gave birth to a baby boy called Reggie.

0:19:130:19:16

Her sights are now firmly set on defending her Olympic title,

0:19:160:19:20

but she has added pressure

0:19:200:19:22

as she juggles training and competing with being a mum.

0:19:220:19:25

What sort of a mother do you aspire to be?

0:19:270:19:30

Oh, that's hard.

0:19:300:19:32

I mean, I just want to be the best mum that I can be.

0:19:320:19:36

There's so many challengers of being a mum,

0:19:360:19:39

you're going to make mistakes along the way. I look back and think,

0:19:390:19:42

I should have done that differently, or I should have changed that.

0:19:420:19:45

I just want Reggie to look at me and just know that I've done

0:19:450:19:48

the best for him and just given him the best start in life.

0:19:480:19:51

Do you have to stop yourself being a bit competitive about

0:19:510:19:55

is he walking yet or...? Do you know what I mean?

0:19:550:19:57

Cos mums are with each other, aren't they? Even if they don't mean to be!

0:19:570:20:01

"Mine's running now, actually, 100m."

0:20:010:20:03

JESSICA CHUCKLES

0:20:030:20:04

I try not to be that kind of parent but I am competitive

0:20:040:20:07

and I do sometimes hear myself saying,

0:20:070:20:10

"Oh, Reggie's done this" or "Reggie can do that"

0:20:100:20:13

and I think every mum's like that,

0:20:130:20:15

you just want your son or daughter to be the best

0:20:150:20:18

and confident in what they do

0:20:180:20:19

but, yeah, I'm trying to rein it in and not be one of those mums.

0:20:190:20:22

But is he? Does he look a bit sporty?

0:20:220:20:24

-Oh, yeah, he's really sporty.

-Is he?

-He's very advanced.

0:20:240:20:28

Picking up things?

0:20:280:20:29

No, he is very active and he has been from ten months -

0:20:290:20:33

he was walking and running around and I competed at the weekend

0:20:330:20:37

throwing the javelin and he came to watch me

0:20:370:20:39

and when we got home, you know, he's got a little brush,

0:20:390:20:42

he likes brushing around the house, and he picked that up and

0:20:420:20:44

he started throwing it around the living room and I was like, "Look!

0:20:440:20:48

"He can throw the javelin!" So, yeah, he's brilliant.

0:20:480:20:50

And the difficult thing is you've got to fit it into an Olympic cycle

0:20:500:20:53

so you've got to get your timing right.

0:20:530:20:55

"I'll have the baby then, then I'll be back

0:20:550:20:57

"and I'll be all right for Rio" and actually the bonus is

0:20:570:20:59

you were all right for the World Championships as well.

0:20:590:21:01

Does that mean, you know, are you forward-planning as well?

0:21:010:21:04

Are you wanting a bigger family?

0:21:040:21:05

Yeah, I definitely want a bigger family

0:21:050:21:07

and I don't think I'm going to have another child

0:21:070:21:10

definitely not before the Olympics and definitely not before I retire.

0:21:100:21:14

I think it was a really big challenge that I set myself,

0:21:140:21:17

you know, having my son and then coming back and trying to get back

0:21:170:21:20

to the top again so I don't think I could do that with two children.

0:21:200:21:25

There's also the fitness challenge of getting fit again

0:21:250:21:28

after having been pregnant and giving birth.

0:21:280:21:30

For me, I noticed that when I came back into training,

0:21:300:21:34

my body fat was actually quite low and that's just simply

0:21:340:21:37

because you're on the go, constantly burning energy and fat,

0:21:370:21:40

so it's always been a case of making sure that I eat enough,

0:21:400:21:44

I keep the carbohydrates and all the food groups on board,

0:21:440:21:47

and make sure I've got that energy to train as hard as I need to

0:21:470:21:50

train in the heptathlon.

0:21:500:21:52

What's your favourite healthy meal?

0:21:520:21:55

I'm big fan of sweet potatoes.

0:21:550:21:56

I eat a lot of fish and chicken.

0:21:560:21:59

Quite a bit of red meat as well.

0:21:590:22:01

Just try and have a balanced diet

0:22:010:22:03

and cover as many food groups as possible.

0:22:030:22:06

Does that mean there's, like, no little, naughty treats?

0:22:060:22:09

-Yes, there is.

-There is? Chocolate?

0:22:090:22:12

Yeah, I've got a massive sweet tooth as well.

0:22:120:22:14

When I go shopping,

0:22:140:22:16

people like to have a little look in your trolley

0:22:160:22:18

and see what you're buying

0:22:180:22:20

and you have to hide some of the chocolates and treats at the bottom.

0:22:200:22:23

If you could add another sport to heptathlon,

0:22:240:22:27

if you could make it eight rather than seven, what would you put in?

0:22:270:22:31

Um... Oh, I don't know.

0:22:310:22:33

I'd definitely take the 800m out, I'd just lose that completely.

0:22:330:22:36

Cos it's painful?

0:22:360:22:37

Cos it's painful and horrible but if I could put any sport in,

0:22:370:22:40

I'd maybe put a bit of tennis in there.

0:22:400:22:43

Are you a good tennis player?

0:22:430:22:44

-No.

-THEY LAUGH

0:22:440:22:46

I haven't played for a long time but that'd be quite good fun, I think.

0:22:460:22:49

Your body shape can be suited to certain sports

0:22:490:22:51

and you look at rowers and, obviously, they're big, long, tall.

0:22:510:22:55

What is your body shape perfect for

0:22:550:22:58

and what elements of you suit the heptathlon well?

0:22:580:23:02

Um, I think...

0:23:020:23:04

I am quite small, I'm one of the smallest heptathletes

0:23:040:23:06

so you'd probably say that my jumps wouldn't be as good

0:23:060:23:09

but high jump is a really strong event for me.

0:23:090:23:11

I'm quite springy and that's something that I think is genetic,

0:23:110:23:15

something I've been born with,

0:23:150:23:16

but generally, I think my body type probably suits

0:23:160:23:19

some of the speedy events, so hurdles, the 200m.

0:23:190:23:22

Not great for the throwing events.

0:23:220:23:24

But, yeah, I think, over the years, so many athletes,

0:23:240:23:28

myself, Usain Bolt, have shown that you don't have to be

0:23:280:23:32

that particular shape to be great at an event.

0:23:320:23:35

Obviously, there is a lot of talk in athletics

0:23:350:23:37

about performance-enhancing substances

0:23:370:23:39

and you will be dope-tested a lot during your career.

0:23:390:23:44

How often do they come calling and what happens when they do?

0:23:440:23:47

Um, so, I mean, in the past five or six weeks,

0:23:470:23:51

I've probably had about three or four tests, so, you know,

0:23:510:23:54

they vary throughout the year, but constantly tested, which is great,

0:23:540:23:58

because you want to make sure that the sport's clean,

0:23:580:24:00

and you want to make sure it's being done in the same, systematic way

0:24:000:24:03

throughout the world.

0:24:030:24:04

So, typically, I put an hour of each day where I'm going to be

0:24:040:24:08

and it's normally a morning slot that I put between six and seven

0:24:080:24:11

cos I know I'm normally in bed or waking up with Reggie.

0:24:110:24:15

And they can basically come whenever they like and test.

0:24:150:24:20

They actually came on my wedding anniversary the other week,

0:24:200:24:23

which was a little bit frustrating, but it's part of it.

0:24:230:24:26

"Happy anniversary!" Beep!

0:24:260:24:28

THEY CHUCKLE

0:24:280:24:29

-"And now could you do this?"

-Yeah.

-So romantic(!)

0:24:290:24:33

Do you feel that there's a medal out there that you didn't win,

0:24:330:24:37

I mean, possibly at the World Championships?

0:24:370:24:40

Yeah, I mean we're still waiting for decisions to be made with that,

0:24:400:24:44

the World Championships in Daegu, but, yeah, I do feel that that's...

0:24:440:24:49

I find it hard to understand how it's fair

0:24:490:24:52

and, yeah, I hope to have that medal one day.

0:24:520:24:54

Everybody fell in love with you at London 2012.

0:24:540:24:58

To such an extent that, unfortunately, for -

0:24:580:25:01

he was your fiance at the time, but your husband now - Andy,

0:25:010:25:05

what happened at the Hyde Park event after Super Saturday?

0:25:050:25:10

Yeah, going out on stage and being announced to the crowd

0:25:100:25:13

and Andy was obviously behind me

0:25:130:25:15

and they were asking how I was going to celebrate

0:25:150:25:18

and I said, "With my fiance, Andy",

0:25:180:25:20

and everyone's like "Boo!"

0:25:200:25:21

And he just stood in the back, just like, "Oh."

0:25:210:25:25

But it was funny and it was all meant in good humour, I think.

0:25:250:25:28

And at Heathrow Airport, when the planes came in

0:25:280:25:31

-there was that big picture of you, wasn't there?

-Yeah.

0:25:310:25:35

-Everyone saw it!

-Yeah, I know.

0:25:350:25:37

When I think back to those moments, you know,

0:25:370:25:40

I still have to jog my memory to remind myself of all these

0:25:400:25:42

different things that happened because, at the time,

0:25:420:25:45

I was just so focused on training

0:25:450:25:46

and making sure everything was right to compete on those two days

0:25:460:25:50

and I kind of missed all these things

0:25:500:25:52

that were happening around me.

0:25:520:25:54

What? So you don't remember what Prince Harry said?

0:25:540:25:56

I mean, it's all a bit of a blur, to be honest,

0:25:560:25:59

and I do obviously remember being there and saying hi to them

0:25:590:26:02

and I remember him saying,

0:26:020:26:04

"Oh, there's not a lot of pressure on you"

0:26:040:26:06

and all these little elements

0:26:060:26:07

but I've not really thought about this for a long time

0:26:070:26:11

and when you're an athlete, you're so focused on training

0:26:110:26:14

and you've done one thing,

0:26:140:26:15

then you're on to achieving the next thing

0:26:150:26:18

and everything is just working forward so you don't have

0:26:180:26:20

that much time to sit down and actually remember all those moments.

0:26:200:26:24

So Super Saturday is still a blur, is it?

0:26:240:26:27

Yeah, I mean, obviously, crossing the line for me -

0:26:270:26:29

that's the image that stays in my mind

0:26:290:26:32

and whenever I think about the Olympics, it's that moment of...

0:26:320:26:36

I felt like I was almost holding my breath through those two days

0:26:360:26:40

and I was just so nervous and so anxious

0:26:400:26:42

that when I actually crossed the line, I knew I'd won,

0:26:420:26:45

I could just breathe out a sigh of relief

0:26:450:26:47

and I'd actually done it, but, yeah, it was just unbelievable.

0:26:470:26:51

Do you remember your results? 100m hurdles?

0:26:510:26:54

Oh, you're really testing me now.

0:26:540:26:56

Um...12.54.

0:26:560:26:58

12.54, which would've been good enough to win gold

0:26:580:27:00

-in the 100m hurdles, pure hurdles, in Beijing.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:27:000:27:04

Which you're probably aware of. High jump?

0:27:040:27:06

-I think it was 1.87m.

-1.86m.

0:27:060:27:09

-1.86m. Close.

-Shot put?

0:27:090:27:12

Oh, this is hard. Shot put was...

0:27:120:27:16

14.20-something...

0:27:160:27:19

14.21?

0:27:190:27:22

Four? Six?

0:27:220:27:24

Eight! 14.28m!

0:27:240:27:26

200m?

0:27:260:27:28

It was 22.83.

0:27:280:27:31

Yeah, which would've won you the British Championships in 2015,

0:27:310:27:34

-last year. You would've been British champion.

-That's quite cool.

0:27:340:27:38

Long jump?

0:27:380:27:39

-Long jump was 6.48m.

-Yes.

0:27:390:27:42

And that was a really key event for me

0:27:420:27:45

and I remember just being so relieved and excited

0:27:450:27:48

that I'd put a decent jump on the board.

0:27:480:27:51

-So then you went to the javelin.

-Yes.

-And?

0:27:510:27:54

And I think it was...46?

0:27:540:27:57

47?

0:27:590:28:01

-47.49m.

-I can't remember.

-No.

0:28:010:28:03

-And then 800 metres.

-Nick will be mad.

0:28:030:28:06

-Where actually the time's not so important.

-Yeah.

0:28:060:28:08

Well, it is, but it's where you finished.

0:28:080:28:10

It is important, but it was just...

0:28:100:28:11

I was so nervous and I just wanted to just start the race.

0:28:110:28:15

It was the last event and I knew I was pretty much there.

0:28:150:28:17

I just had to get round and make sure I didn't fall over,

0:28:170:28:20

I didn't lose a shoe, I didn't get injured halfway round.

0:28:200:28:23

And then just bring it home that last 100 metres.

0:28:230:28:26

So do you know your time?

0:28:260:28:27

I think it was 2.08?

0:28:270:28:30

.65, yes.

0:28:300:28:32

And your final score.

0:28:320:28:34

6955.

0:28:340:28:36

Correct. You have passed, Jessica Ennis-Hill,

0:28:360:28:39

you may move forward to the heptathlon in Rio.

0:28:390:28:41

How many points do you think it will take to win gold in Rio?

0:28:410:28:44

Um, I think it's going to be

0:28:440:28:46

an incredibly high standard, as any Olympics is.

0:28:460:28:50

But I think it's probably going to take in the region of 6,900,

0:28:500:28:53

maybe a little bit more.

0:28:530:28:56

Wow, wow.

0:28:560:28:58

Can you remember how you celebrated in London?

0:28:580:29:00

Um...as soon as I got my medal I just went and found my family

0:29:000:29:05

and had a glass of champagne and lots of big hugs.

0:29:050:29:07

And just big smiles and, yeah, just excitement.

0:29:070:29:12

It opened many doors, it created various opportunities.

0:29:120:29:14

You had some really cool invitations.

0:29:140:29:18

You had a chance to meet your absolute hero, Will Smith.

0:29:180:29:22

I think he was on the week before or something like that.

0:29:220:29:25

-Oh, so you just missed him.

-Oh, he is incredible.

0:29:250:29:28

And I would just absolutely love to meet him.

0:29:280:29:31

Did you have a photo of him by your bed?

0:29:310:29:33

Yes, that's really sad, isn't it?

0:29:330:29:35

Well, it's interesting. JESSICA LAUGHS

0:29:350:29:38

-Interesting for your husband.

-It was a framed picture as well.

0:29:380:29:41

So I cut out a picture of him in a magazine and put it in a frame.

0:29:410:29:45

I'm a massive Will Smith fan.

0:29:450:29:46

-But it's not there any more by your bed?

-No, no!

0:29:460:29:49

No. Andy wouldn't allow it.

0:29:490:29:51

Every night there's Will Smith. Night, Will.

0:29:510:29:54

In 2015 Jess had the mother of all comebacks.

0:29:540:29:58

Just 13 months after giving birth, and three years after her last

0:29:580:30:02

major event, she struck gold at the World Championships in Beijing.

0:30:020:30:06

How much of a surprise was this?

0:30:060:30:09

Going into those World Championships in Beijing last year what

0:30:090:30:12

would have been a good result for you?

0:30:120:30:13

I mean, once myself and my coach had decided that I was OK to go

0:30:130:30:19

and give it my best shot we really wanted to come away with a medal

0:30:190:30:22

and that was our target - just to get on the podium.

0:30:220:30:25

But last year was a tough year, because I was constantly

0:30:250:30:29

comparing myself to 2012, the training times I used to do.

0:30:290:30:34

But when I came back, the reality was very different.

0:30:340:30:37

So I had to change my expectations completely.

0:30:370:30:40

Tony would constantly say to me, last year, "You're not the same

0:30:400:30:43

"athlete as before, these are posed-pregnancy PBs."

0:30:430:30:46

And it's got to be incredibly special when you go out there,

0:30:460:30:50

not expecting to win a gold medal, and you do win a gold medal.

0:30:500:30:53

Last year was definitely one of the highlights in my career.

0:30:530:30:56

After having Reggie, I wanted to come back,

0:30:560:30:59

I wanted to be strong and I wanted to get back to where I was.

0:30:590:31:02

But I knew it was going to take time, and I thought,

0:31:020:31:04

I'm not going to be able to do it in this short space of time.

0:31:040:31:07

And then I had Achilles problems,

0:31:070:31:09

and all the other things that come with being a first-time mum.

0:31:090:31:13

You're not sleeping properly, and all the changes.

0:31:130:31:16

And I just thought, this isn't going to happen this year,

0:31:160:31:18

but I'm going to keep trying and pushing on.

0:31:180:31:20

And then to get to Beijing and come away with a gold medal was just...

0:31:200:31:26

I just really didn't expect it.

0:31:260:31:28

The lap of honour was really more of a hobble, wasn't it?

0:31:280:31:31

Yeah.

0:31:310:31:33

Yeah, throughout that competition,

0:31:330:31:36

that was the first Championships that I'd needed a lot of physio.

0:31:360:31:40

And normally I'm, you know, Ali Rose my physio will come over to me

0:31:400:31:43

and she'd be like, "Do you need any treatment?"

0:31:430:31:45

And I'm normally like, "No, I'm fine."

0:31:450:31:47

But literally in Beijing it was like, "I need Ali,

0:31:470:31:50

"I need some more treatment on my Achilles."

0:31:500:31:52

I need constant putting back together.

0:31:520:31:55

And then in the 800 it was literally the last bend

0:31:550:31:58

that I was coming round and I just felt my calf go.

0:31:580:32:01

And I knew that I was on the last stretch

0:32:010:32:03

and I just had to get to the line and I'd won.

0:32:030:32:06

After that it was quite painful cos I'd torn my calf

0:32:060:32:09

and I had to hobble around

0:32:090:32:10

and couldn't really walk much for the next couple of weeks.

0:32:100:32:14

But it was worth it.

0:32:140:32:16

And it was worth it, not just for proving that you were back,

0:32:160:32:19

but proving to everybody else you're back, I think,

0:32:190:32:22

is important as well.

0:32:220:32:24

So going into Rio, you are not just the reigning Olympic champion,

0:32:240:32:27

you are the reigning world champion.

0:32:270:32:30

Will you walk a little taller because of that?

0:32:300:32:33

I definitely take confidence from that.

0:32:330:32:36

I think, when you enter any competition, you're starting

0:32:360:32:39

from zero again, and you're all on that same starting line.

0:32:390:32:43

But I will take confidence knowing that I was able to

0:32:430:32:46

put that score together to finish at the top of the podium,

0:32:460:32:50

off very little training and preparation.

0:32:500:32:52

So I know that if I can keep my body held together,

0:32:520:32:56

train that little bit more, that, hopefully,

0:32:560:32:59

I can take confidence and do a bit better this year.

0:32:590:33:03

Have you been to Rio before?

0:33:030:33:05

Once, yeah, but only for two days, so I didn't get to see that much.

0:33:050:33:08

But it was incredible.

0:33:080:33:10

And I'm sort of thinking that sightseeing isn't very high

0:33:100:33:12

on your list of priorities when you get there this time.

0:33:120:33:14

No, it's going to be very much, I'm there to perform and do a job.

0:33:140:33:19

And I'm going to be extremely focused on that

0:33:190:33:21

and then it'll be about getting back to my family, wherever they may be.

0:33:210:33:26

And will your family come out with you?

0:33:260:33:28

Yeah, we're kind of planning everything at the moment

0:33:280:33:31

so we're working out logistics and obviously, with Reggie,

0:33:310:33:34

making sure he's comfortable and happy wherever he is.

0:33:340:33:37

But, yes, we're working logistics

0:33:370:33:38

and plans of everything at the moment.

0:33:380:33:40

You talked earlier about the importance of being a role model

0:33:400:33:43

to younger girls.

0:33:430:33:45

But also you have a chance to do something in Rio

0:33:450:33:47

that only two athletes have ever done before,

0:33:470:33:50

which is retain an Olympic title having had a child.

0:33:500:33:53

-You could be the third to do it.

-Yeah.

0:33:530:33:55

Does that matter?

0:33:550:33:57

I'm so proud of what I've achieved already

0:33:570:34:00

and content and happy with what I've done.

0:34:000:34:02

But there is that massive part of me

0:34:020:34:05

that's like, this would be incredible

0:34:050:34:07

if I could just hold everything together and push on.

0:34:070:34:11

But again it's, you know, to win back-to-back Olympics

0:34:110:34:14

is such a huge challenge anyway.

0:34:140:34:16

But to have a child in between makes it that little bit harder.

0:34:160:34:20

When you check in to the Olympic Village,

0:34:200:34:23

what's that environment like and do you still share rooms or not?

0:34:230:34:27

Yes, so in London it was kind of like an apartment set-up.

0:34:270:34:31

So you had a couple of people sharing a room,

0:34:310:34:34

I think there was six or seven of us.

0:34:340:34:36

So it's really nice to be in that environment where everyone's

0:34:360:34:41

a bit nervous, everyone's excited, that real kind of team feeling.

0:34:410:34:46

And you presumably are very much team leader now.

0:34:460:34:49

-You'll be one of the senior athletes.

-Oldest.

0:34:490:34:52

One of the senior, more experienced athletes on the team,

0:34:520:34:55

so therefore, for the first-timers, you're the one dispensing advice.

0:34:550:34:59

Oh, I didn't think about that.

0:34:590:35:00

Yes, you've got a lot of responsibility.

0:35:000:35:03

Yes, I still feel like I'm a young one on the team

0:35:030:35:05

and I'm just kind of starting at the beginning.

0:35:050:35:08

And especially having stepped away from athletics for a bit

0:35:080:35:11

I very much felt like when I came back I was out of the loop a bit.

0:35:110:35:15

And I'm back to learning everything.

0:35:150:35:18

But, you know, if there's young athletes on the team

0:35:180:35:21

I would always offer a bit of advice or help if I can in any way.

0:35:210:35:25

Presumably people did that for you?

0:35:250:35:27

Yeah, yeah. I think having bits of advice on different things,

0:35:270:35:31

or just having someone to say, "Oh, best to eat at this time."

0:35:310:35:34

Or, "Pick up your accreditation there."

0:35:340:35:37

You know, just little bits of help along the way.

0:35:370:35:39

Bring earplugs cos the second week there's lots of people

0:35:390:35:41

who've finished competing and they make a noise.

0:35:410:35:44

Exactly, all those little things you need to know

0:35:440:35:46

and if you've not been in that village set-up before,

0:35:460:35:49

then they're really important bits of information.

0:35:490:35:52

So, in Rio, do you get the chance to go and watch anything else?

0:35:520:35:57

Yeah, I hope so. I'd love to watch some of the other sports.

0:35:570:36:01

The British boxers are based here,

0:36:010:36:03

so we're in the gym training with them all the time.

0:36:030:36:06

So I'd love to see some of them compete,

0:36:060:36:08

because they've been doing amazing at the moment.

0:36:080:36:10

Actually, you and Nicola Adams, I think, are similar,

0:36:100:36:13

in the sense of the smiling assassin, if you like!

0:36:130:36:16

You know, "How could you go and do that, you seem so sweet?"

0:36:160:36:20

-So you'll go and hopefully support her?

-Yeah.

0:36:200:36:23

When it comes to Rio, who do you foresee being your rivals,

0:36:230:36:27

right at the top of that list?

0:36:270:36:29

I think that obviously Brianne Theisen-Eaton,

0:36:290:36:32

she's been performing and improving year on year.

0:36:320:36:35

And although she didn't perform the way she wanted

0:36:350:36:37

at the Worlds last year, she had a really good score in Gotzis

0:36:370:36:40

earlier in the year and she's improved so much.

0:36:400:36:43

So she's definitely a main rival.

0:36:430:36:45

And Katerina because she's an incredible athlete

0:36:450:36:48

and she's still not quite shown us everything yet.

0:36:480:36:52

She had the disappointment in Beijing as well, so I think that

0:36:520:36:55

she's going to put things right and be a fierce competitor this year.

0:36:550:36:58

And that's a difficult situation for you

0:36:580:37:00

cos obviously you're team-mates.

0:37:000:37:02

And you want each other to do well, you're part of Team GB.

0:37:020:37:05

In a way, more than at a World Championships,

0:37:050:37:07

you're trying to achieve something together.

0:37:070:37:09

But you are each other's competition.

0:37:090:37:11

Yeah. It's hard and it's nice in a way because we will both

0:37:110:37:15

hopefully be there out in the field and we can support each other.

0:37:150:37:18

But of course we want to beat each other,

0:37:180:37:20

we want to be the best British heptathlete.

0:37:200:37:23

So we'll be hoping that both of us do well.

0:37:230:37:27

And there's quite a lot of time between events

0:37:270:37:29

where presumably the only people you see are the other heptathletes.

0:37:290:37:32

Yes, so we have a combined events room, which is under the stadium.

0:37:320:37:36

There's just the medical team and the athletes and coaches.

0:37:360:37:40

And there is a lot of downtime between the morning session

0:37:400:37:44

and the afternoon session, and you kind of just sit there

0:37:440:37:46

and you have to gather your thoughts.

0:37:460:37:48

-That'd be awful, I think that's like the worst bit of all.

-Yes.

0:37:480:37:51

And you don't want to look at them,

0:37:510:37:53

you don't really want to talk to them and you can't read a book.

0:37:530:37:56

Yes, it is a strange situation and everyone does something differently.

0:37:560:37:59

So some heptathletes go back to the hotel, others like to stay there.

0:37:590:38:03

I'm quite happy to just stay in a corner

0:38:030:38:05

and try and get a bit of sleep and then just listen to music,

0:38:050:38:09

and just kind of keep myself to myself.

0:38:090:38:11

But you do have to talk to each other as well

0:38:110:38:14

so it's quite a strange environment.

0:38:140:38:16

Finally, Jess Ennis-Hill, on a scale of one to ten,

0:38:160:38:20

what are your chances of bringing home a gold medal from Rio?

0:38:200:38:23

Ooh. I... At this moment in time, I really don't know.

0:38:230:38:28

I'm happy because I'm back into full training,

0:38:280:38:31

but with sport, things change in an instant.

0:38:310:38:36

So I really don't know.

0:38:360:38:38

But you do 100% believe in your own ability, don't you?

0:38:380:38:42

Yes, definitely.

0:38:420:38:44

I've got such a great set-up, I've got a great coach

0:38:440:38:47

and great people around me and I know they believe in me.

0:38:470:38:49

And I've done it in the past

0:38:490:38:51

so I know that I can go on and do it again.

0:38:510:38:53

But I need a little bit of luck on my side as well.

0:38:530:38:55

We will all be supporting you and thank you so much for your time.

0:38:550:38:59

Thank you.

0:38:590:39:00

Listening to Jess there,

0:39:000:39:01

you realise how much has changed in her life since London 2012.

0:39:010:39:04

But also how much some things have stayed the same.

0:39:040:39:07

The hours of training, the hard graft,

0:39:070:39:09

the being here in Sheffield where she feels comfortable,

0:39:090:39:12

where she's surrounded by people who understand her, people she loves.

0:39:120:39:15

The importance of her family

0:39:150:39:17

and how much it matters to her to try to make them proud.

0:39:170:39:21

In essence, it's very simple,

0:39:210:39:23

but what she's trying to achieve is very, very difficult.

0:39:230:39:27

With a following wind and a bit of good luck

0:39:270:39:30

she hopefully will make her Olympic swansong a glorious one.
