Day 4 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Good evening. Tuesday at Lakeside always sees the completion of the

first round in the men's, and the women continue their drive to the

quarter-finals. What an all English match we had as Dita Hedman took on

Lorraine Farnham from Derbyshire, a former Lakeside semifinalists. Your

commentators are Jim Proudfoot and Val -- vassals Alexander.

Once again, has had the most extraordinary 12 months. She comes

here as top seed for the third year in a row.

We were chatting to her backstage no more than 20 minutes ago, and she

said, as always, before a match on the Lakeside stage, she's nervous.

Has such great desire to win this trophy. A runner-up in 2012 when she

lost to Anastasia does promise live in the final. -- Anastasia

Dobromyslova. Is this the first one? Just in the wrong bed, but only

just. Lorraine is making her straight appearance here.

If Dita is slightly off her game, she can take advantage. She has

started well. Look at this. Not much wrong with the dance so far. --

darts. Dita replying in kind, leaves

herself on a finish. Two single 20s, or a double 20 and a

double ten. This for the first leg. It can be done via a treble 20.

Needed that. Dita off and running. The rain with

a decent response. Her second 140 of the match. -- Lorraine.

The Mitchells are in. There were. -- beware.

James Wilson in action later tonight. His preparations, sitting

and chatting to his mates and fans who are watching this game. It is

fair to say having spoken to him earlier that he is pretty relaxed

about the task in hand later this evening, and equally confident.

He's been waiting five days to play. And he's been having fun

knowing that he's playing well. Dita goes down for 177. Sets up a finish.

Lorraine is on one as well. Lorraine may have been thinking she

would have an easy leg, then a 177 later and she is under pressure with

this 104. 18 leaves double 16 to hold her throw.

Two darts at double top four a leg against the darts for a lead in this

second set. She will have to shuffle across the key to adjust. -- the

oche. You really feel she needs this to get some early confidence.

They both mean business this evening. Dita has meant business

throughout the year. An extraordinary 2013 since we last saw

her on that stage. She has won the Dutch open, the Scottish open, the

German open, the Polish open, the Police Masters, the classic, the

England classic, the British Open, the world Masters, the Northern

Ireland open, and most recently the Czech Republic open. It is a good

job that you read quickly. With darts like that, that is what

did it for her. Still early days in this match, but

an excellent average for Dita early on in particular.

Cover shots have been excellent for both players so far.

The darts have been dazzling, hence the dark glasses.

Some of the heavy drinkers in the crowd will be thinking they can see

five of Captain Sensabaugh there. -- Captain Sensible. Another great

cover shot from Dita. Lorraine is doing really well to stick around

and still be interested in the leg, despite the heavy scoring from

Dita. 18 for double 16, or ten for double tops. She needs double tops.

She has missed it twice. She has hit it twice.

The first three legs going with the throw, putting more pressure on

Lorraine to hold here. Excellent stuff. Three 140s up until this

point, Lorraine. Every time she has hit a treble she has hit a second as

well. They were on a commuter train up

from London. I think he has just discovered the problem. Oh, yeah.

Oh, he can. He has still managed to drain it.

There's Dean Winstanley, who has had some wonderful days here on the

Lakeside stages. A player very much here supporting not just Lorraine,

his partner, but also some of his old friends and adversaries as well.

Great to see Dean. A former finalist of course. He will

be hoping that Lorraine can check out 170. She can't do it now.

Lost the 2011 final to Martin Adams, Dean Winstanley. 122 for the set.

The Bulls I've for the set. -- the bull's-eye for the set.

Treble 19 for Lorraine. Double 16. To darts at it to save the set.

Close with the first one. Not close another with the second -- two

darts. The toe with a chance to take the first set here. -- Deta. Single

nine. She has hit the double. Three now for double two. 22 for the macro

-- double two for the set. That famous smile lights up. She hits

B-double two Anje Lee leads by 1-0. -- the double two and she leads. A

set with the darts. In this short format, it feels hard to come back

from a set down, especially against someone of Deta 's class who is

clearly throwing well. Nerves? What nerves.

The most famous meeting between these two ladies came at the semi

finals two years ago when Deta won 2-1, a last leg decider, taking her

to first ever World Championship final. Lorraine's only victory

against the tour in ten previous meetings came when she was

representing Cheshire in the Gold Ladies singles in 2011 at the

Lakeside. Nothing to choose between them at this stage in the first leg

of the second set. Needed a treble there you would feel. Deta is in no

mood to be asked twice. A couple of troubles might have set

up an opportunity to break the throw. You wouldn't put it past her.

Lorraine will be back for 98. Treble 810 -- 18. She has left tops

if she returns. Double 12 she needs, unique this. -- Nick. How

good is that? 8101. To move ahead in the set, to break the throw, and

just possibly to break the resistance of Lorraine Farlam. The

finishing has been so impressive from Deta Hedman. She has thrown the

last four darts at doubles. The only one she missed was the bullseye, and

it was not far a wage. -- far away. Excellent scoring at the start of

this lake as well from Deta Hedman. -- leg. One 15, followed by 40. And

that treble 19 just keeps up the intensity. Keeps up the pressure.

Lorraine's missing by more than she was. Straight back into the treble

20. Went for the treble 18. On a 13 dart at is details. -- Deta Hedman.

And the second leg, Peter Hedman. -- Deta Hedman. Perhaps Lorraine has

just sped up a little bit now. I think she knows that Deta Hedman on

this sort of form is just so hard to beat. There is no less up. -- let.

Three one 40s. She got a 177. 14 three figure returns in six legs. An

average of 84 stands up with the majority of games we have seen here,

in the men's tournament as well at this point. Whether Deta will be

able to transform her form to the Lakeside stage is dissipating very

quickly. If she comes away from here with a victory, and an average of

83, it will send shock waves around the rest of the ladies tournament

without a shadow of a doubt. Six darts for it. Treble can now to

leave double 16. She has played well, Lorraine. She has just been

beaten. Look at this for pressure. From Deta. Is this going to be the

first 180? Very close. Double eight now. That might be her last dart of

the tournament. The eight -- eight double top here forward Deta. Game,

shot, and the match! Deta Hedman! Deta Hedman hopes this will be her

first ever World Championship. An average of nearly 84, good

finishing, excellent darts all round. Really good game, Deta wins.

Next for the three-time champion came the run-up Tony O Shea. Only

one could keep their Lakeside dream alive. Your commentary from Jim

Proudfoot and Tony Green. Adams gets us under way, and what a way to

start. Fantastic entrances from both players. An absolute harsh when they

are throwing. -- hush. Wonderful atmosphere here at the Lakeside for

this match. Those who bought afternoon tickets could not believe

their luck when they thought what they would need witnessing. -- saw.

Ultimately, David Cameron ended up with out what he wanted. 140 is a

piece. Treble 20, treble 19 would do. 77 left. Tony O Shea is already

way behind. What a start! What a start! Not a very good first start

there, the way it dropped. Another chance for Adams. Straight into the

treble. It could be significant that Martin has played a preliminary

round and Tony hasn't. Both of the guys that have played preliminarily

round matches so far and then come into the next round, they have both

had fast darts. Martin has the darts in this first set. Certainly good

points. Martin really is going to town here. 140 before this throw.

That is 95 left. 13th consecutive appearance for O'Shea. 95 to take

the leg against the darts. O'Shea will have a chants at 146 to hold

here. -- chance. He has got three darts to do it. Double trouble! A

chance for O'Shea. Single. He wants the double. Maybe it is too early

for him. It is a chance he would not have expected. 55. -- double five.

Adams is now throwing for the first set. He ended up losing the first

set as a result of that. A 40% success rate in that first round

match. Adams has picked up the pace, quicker then O'Shea. Getting

the best of order. Salon Sherrock, watching on. She played earlier. She

was in fantastic form, the teenager from Cleveland. It is just not going

for O'Shea. There it is to fans of his, they will not be very happy.

You don't win any titles with 57 and 55. Oh dear.

Down to 58. O'Shea is still a long way back. Tops here for Martin Adams

for the first set. Two were darts at double top. Still not finding his

range at the moment. 148 for Tony. It won't be happening. He looks very

nervous at the moment. Double ten and it is set point.

Double five. That's the one. The first one goes to Martin.

At last, the cheers ring out as we saw the finished of that last leg

and the set for Martin. Disappointing start for Tony. No

disguising that. When it comes down to it, Martin had the darts in that

first set and has held. So no significant damage done to Tony

O'Shea up to this point. Two 140s at the start of this leg indicate that

he has found his feet now. He has been telling himself off. " Come on,

get in there" . He knows what he has to do. He's an old campaigner.

That's better. It is fluent now. He's on a finish after nine darts,

as we look at Martin and the solid stance.

A chance for Tony. Treble 17. He went for it. Didn't quite get it.

But he will be back for 64. I wonder if there's a last-minute change of

mind from Tony. He could be pressured now after that 64. Already

on a finish. He can't miss those. Can Adams

punish him with a leg against the darts at the beginning of the second

set. A good start. Double 16 for a fourth leg in a row. Both missed

double 16s at critical times in this match already. He takes a deep

breath, looking for 88. He has three darts to do it. -- double eight.

Look at that. He has got double trouble is, O'Shea. -- double

troubles. Five darts at a double and he has missed them all so far,

O'Shea, and Adams has taken advantage. Last year in the final

against Scott Waites, he got off to a nightmare start, ended up losing

macro 71 having taken out Roddy Green and Wesley Harms in the

quarters and the semis. He should have nothing on his mind. -- 7-1. He

should be concentrating on the match, but he's not doing it.

He's only ever been beaten in the first round four times in his 12

previous visits. Most recently three years ago when Ross Smith was the

player that knocked him out. Will feed's record is similarly

impressive. Lost 15 and 15 at this stage. His 13th consecutive

appearance at this World Championship. Riding the corner. It

is a treble. He is on a finish. Way back again.

83 compared to 275. Good cover shot but he's not on a

finish and Adams has six darts from here to move within a leg of a 2-0

lead in less to no time. -- less than. 18 would have a better shot

looking at oche a. -- O'Shea. World number nine. Double eight.

Double four. It is a big finish. Can he do it?

Not with these next two unfortunately. He has messed it up.

Nothing going right for O'Shea. 44 for a 2-0 lead in the second set. --

double four. Second time of asking he wins this second leg, and still

Tony yet to get on the board. Come on, Tony. That is the finish of

Adams. Look at the difference between the

two players in the first nine stats there. 25 points clear of Tony,

Martin. It is a vast difference. Especially in a first to three

sets. Horrible reading for Tony up until

this point. It puts pressure on you as you go for the double, that's the

main thing. Still leading in this one as well. that's better. The

crowd know it. The crowd are on his side.

136 for Martin to take the second set. Another treble 20 will leave

double eight for a 2-0 lead. It is a big finish, he's a big man. He's got

the first one. Wanted the treble 18. But Adams now... Double eight.

Double four. Just hoping... Double two. Oh, now then. Come on, Tony.

16. He has hit the double 16 first eight now. He can't hit that. He has

bussed it. How critical code that proved to be -- bust. We we'll find

out. Double two is not the easiest on the board. He has rushed it.

Double one apiece. Adams is first to the oche. Adams leads 2-0.

I wonder which side he got out of bed. Because it is certainly not him

throwing, is it? I asked him whether he was frustrated that he was down

late on Tuesday and not playing before this. He said it gave him a

couple of nights extra in his own bed, he made the journey down from

Stockport on Sunday. He has got to give it all he's got now. He's got

nothing to lose. 2-0 down. He has to go for everything.

His head shakes. All the way up the oche.

The third meeting of these two here at the Lakeside. Martin won 3-0 at

this stage seven years ago. Are we going to see a repeat today? Tony

took revenge in the quarter-finals in 2012. A wonderful game when he

beat the defending champion macro 52, his only victory against Wolfie

in the last nine years -- 5-2. Bull's-eye for the seventh leg on

the bounce. Look at the scores for Martin. 140, 140, 100, 96. Tony is

just not there. Nine. Double eight. Take it away. That is way off.

Double four. He will come back if he can't hit this one, though.

All Tony can do is try to hit some travel is here and apply as much

pressure as he can. Uncle Tony hasn't been at his best so far.

Double four becomes double two. Seven in a row. He did it against

Dave Caron as well, he won the first seven legs, he then lost the next

three. Tony has to hope that he can produce some kind of similar revival

to keep himself in this match. I don't think it's going to happen. He

looks so dejected, looking down. He won't like the 140. He is not

playing his game. He is perspiring. 140. It puts him with a slight hope

in this leg. And now that has changed. ATF -- ATF -- 80th 180 of

the tournament. Lovely to see him, he loves his darts. There he is. 81

for Martin. Double 12. And he is one leg away. The number three seed

looks on, hoping for inspiration. He needs it, and he needs it right now.

Just give up. He's given up. So sad. Blocking the bed with the first

dart. Yeah, he is just throwing darts at the board. Not putting any

heart into it. No punishment coming in. Just got to feel for the man.

Absolutely I do. He has lost nine of the ten sets he has played on the

Lakeside stage now. There is a glimmer of hope here. Just a

glimmer. 102 left. 62 for the match. 42. That first dart has gotten a

single five on quite a few occasions from Tony O'Shea. For the match!

Double 16. Double eight. Not quite. Come on Tony, they are shouting out

there. Double 16, get it in their! Not again! For the match. Game,

shot, and the match! Martin Adams! You have just got to feel for the

man they are, Tony O'Shea. It is not his day. I guarantee there will be

no more magnanimous loser all week then Tony O'Shea. He is a wonderful

gentleman in every sense. He has been well beaten today, Martin Adams

through. Walsh and Jim Williams was making his debut seeded scene --

16th, but gave Prins was flying after securing a first Lakeside

victory in five attempts. Eight fascinating match. Prins is hugely

relieved to have one hears preliminarily match yesterday. --

won his. Having previously lost all four out of four on the Lakeside

stage. Today's task: advance past round one for the first time. I

wouldn't relish and that, with the form that Stephen bunting is in,

playing against him tomorrow. He has been coming here every year since

2010, David Prins. He has lost in round one every time. He finally

managed to win a match. Look what it has done to their confidence. He

knows what it is all about, Dave Prins, on three occasions... He

needed the treble. 36 when Prins comes back. A good start, this. This

is for a 13 dart leg, to hold the throw. First leg of the match. That

first leg, with the throw, Jim Williams. Let's see what he can do

on this throw. It is an advantage, three darts. Jim admits he was

nervous before he came on the stage, why wouldn't you be! --? But

he does has -- have plenty of support including his girlfriend.

It is a family affair, many times, there. There is too. -- two. That is

Grace, Jim's sister, holding up a sign. She will approve of those to

darts. She will be on her feet. She was on her feet anyway! He is on 165

but it is not an out shot. A good start. 85 left. Well, he might have

been better advised to go for a double 18 rather than that treble

20. But he has left himself on double top if Dave Prins fails to

take this out, which he has. The scoring is terrific. He is at the

board, he is looking at double top. He has to darts left. Double ten to

even the match. All could now -- awkward now, because he has that

first dart there. It was difficult. This will settle some nerves. If he

can hit the double hand. At the top 455, stay there. - for double five.

Here we go. Nearly there. A good start from Prins. There he

goes again. He is looking down with his darts. 180! What a start to this

match. Look at macro to's average -- Dave Prins's average with his first

few darts. Is this number three? Not far away. 137. Jim Williams seems to

throw from the other side of his face than what you would imagine,

like Bobby George. Treble 16. He will stay on the 16th. Jim,

unfortunately, on 281. It is good, but it is probably not good enough.

181 is not a finish, but Greens can take this out. -- Prins. Now he

needs to get down on a double. Not bad, that is 81. He shouldn't miss

now. Well, it is only Stephen Bunting who

has managed to buck the trend of only preliminarily round winners

winning the first set in the next round. I know that he does feel a

lot better about having played and having finally won. He did

everything today it exactly how he did it yesterday, Dave Prins. He

went for a walk, watched the afternoon sessions from his hotel

room, wandered over. Today, he feels a lot better about life than he did

yesterday. He has won a match at the World Championship. Well said.

Incidentally, if you wear watching yesterday, you would have seen David

Prins wearing a new shirt. This one was a present from his son, a

Christmas present. He has a different shirt for every round.

Sikhs have been packed, and he is hoping to show us them all between

now and Sunday evening. It's like what a box where is now going into

the ring. -- boxer wears. He won't be happy with this leg, he 41, 59,

45, 59. Not even a 60 amongst them. He has left himself on a 162, Prins,

which is not an out shot. He can pressure the 81, though, with some

more heavy scoring. He has pressured the 81. He will

have to take that out here. Single 12. Stay there, double 13. He has

mis-counted. We think he has hit double 18. We think that he hasn't

won that Blake. There is a query going on. -- that leg. The last

score was a no score. Don't worry about it. No harm done.

Double 16 coming now. That's the one. I have to say, that is a huge

leg for Dave Prins. And full marks to him for counting. And for

noticing the error. Quite simply Jim Williams mis-counted. He went for

double 18. He should have gone for double 13. For all the error, the

referees up there so far have done a brilliant job this week. All of

them. Anthony Dunning this -- Anthony Dundess will be feeling a

little bit embarrassed at the moment. But everyone makes mistakes.

Jim Williams, of course, had mis-counted, when for the double

18. Very good shot. He assumed he had one. -- won. You could see it

going through Prins' mind. I don't think he was going to let it

go. But on with the match. He would have wanted more than 41

there. Jim Williams needs to start pushing pressure on Dave Prins. You

can tell the Badger is riding the moment of yesterday's win as well as

the first set victory here. One dart ahead of Williams. But a chance now

for Jim. Two treble 20s. 96. Still treble 20. Double tops for Prins.

Amazing what the confidence of a first victory on this stage can do

for you. I think difficult to overstate it in

Dave's case. Jim Williams beat Christian Kist and

Montgomery recently. Seems to be rushing here. Not taking

his time. What do you make of his throat, Jim Williams'? -- throw. I

think personally he is coming down to quick. You see the rhythm of Dave

Prins. Let's have a look. That's good. From a side point of view it

looks fantastic. He does seem to come across his face a little bit. I

couldn't see that sideways. When you are looking full on, it seems that

way. He has left himself 136 here. It is all about the 19s. Four of

them would have left the bull's-eye but he has strayed into the seven.

Good last dart. This is for the set for a two set

lead for Dave Prins. Jim Williams has had seven chances

to win a leg. This is his eighth. Double 16. Yes, he's done it.

You hope that does settle him down. I hope so. He is a good young

player. At the moment Wales is struggling for players.

Never used to be the case. Three Welshmen have won the world title.

Leighton Rees in 78, Ritchie Burnett in 95, and most recently, Mark

Webster in 2008. Marshall James and Ritchie Davis

both reached the final. Both of them Welshmen. They must breed them well

in Wales. Alan Evans started it off. What a character he was. Twice a

semifinalist. Dave Prins, let's think about him, from Hartlepool.

140, 100, 140, not bad from nine darts.

He has got six darts for the set from 121. He might not double 18 for

the set. How about that? 12 dart finish. 2-0 up in sets. 12 darts. A

121. A two set lead. Off we go. That is his first bounce out of the

match. In fact of the tournament. Hit the barrel. Come on, Jim. Dig

deep. I tell you what, he is going to be

one not to meet in this championship. The thing is, Dave

Prins is scoring heavily with his first nine darts. Yes, Williams has

missed eight doubles. But it is Dave who is getting to the doubles first,

so he can afford his Mrs. He has had ten of them. Nicknamed the Badger.

Yesterday we saw the Badger set building for the first time. I loved

it. They are nocturnal creatures, badgers. He likes playing at night

under the lights. Mind you, a bit noisy for a badger. I would have

thought so. Good job it's not on the menu anyway.

Dave and Jane, Jim's mum and dad, hoping that Williams could produce a

badger cull tonight. She won a holiday to Bermuda on bull's-eye.

She hit the bull's-eye. He has got a good chance after that. Let's see

how he goes. 12 for double top. No messing around.

1-way traffic. There's the dart that won the leg. He is a completely

different player. Having finally won the match, he is relaxing into his

darts, and he is enjoying it. He has won a few titles on his way,

Hungarian open champion, Irish open champion, Swedish open champion.

Like we said, he has form. A slight advantage now for Jim

Williams. Jim beat Christian Kist 3-2, former

world champion. Just 14 months is the difference

from the time he started playing darts and here he is on this stage.

He has a lot to learn. He is young enough. I'm sure we will be seeing a

lot of him. He did play and then he stopped, he did other things, then

he picked it up seriously again ahead of the World Masters in 2012.

He did so well there. He beat Christian Kist in his first

televised match. He reached the quarter-finals before losing to

Stephen bunting 3-1, Stephen bunting who went on to win the world title.

He has had a decent year since. -- Stephen Bunting. Four Semi Finals,

runner up at the Scottish open. A couple of quarter-finals as well.

Hence his seeding at 15. He has a chance to win this leg from this

position. He has let's see which way he goes.

He has gone for the treble 16, leaves double eight. They will be

coming back, so he has read darts for this leg. -- three. Dave will

want to keep the pressure on though. Settled down. Come on, Jim! Double

five. Treble 20, 88 -- double eight. This is to move one leg away from

round two. He is just not missing. There it is. His family members are

all there, all cheering him on. One more leg required. Just dropping

short. He has got a chance to put some

pressure on here, Jim Williams. He needs to put some ammunition

together, it was this could be the last leg in the match. If Prins

keeps going that way. I hope he doesn't give the game up, because he

has time on his side. He is only a youngster. 180! Maximum number

three. Leaves Prins only 62 points away from a place in the second

round. There is not much pressure being applied by Jim Williams. He

can finally play it is best darts on the Lakeside stage. Game, shot, and

A good start from Durrant. His ranking is up to 11. The number can

see it here. There is nothing that can really set you up for the first

match on the Lakeside stage. You don't know how you feel and till you

actually out there flowing -- throwing the darts. A solid start

from Glen Durrant. Yes it is all on the day. You have got people who are

more consistent than others. That is consistent. 121. He has put himself

in a good position to take this first leg, against the darts, Glen

Durrant. He certainly isn't lacking for support. He has very vociferous

support. Even before the doors were opened today, the Glen Durrant fans

were making their presence known. Treble 20. He went for 16, so that

is time. -- fine. I think he has lost it a bit. Let's see what he

wants to go for. Mike Day is not in a position to be able to capitalise

on that. A slowish start in his match against Sam Head. He lost the

first two legs. Glen Durrant with a chance for double 16 here.

The proud son of Middlesbrough gets himself ahead. He has plenty of

support here. You would never guess that he was from Middlesbrough,

would you? He's got a badge and the colours of the area. There are so

many good darts players from that area of the world. Paul Jennings and

Tony Eccles are from just up the road. They are all based within a

stone 's throw of each other. A good cover shot. He is doing well. He

does not have the consistency of Durrant or the high powering school.

-- score. 161 is the finish for Durrant. There is Susan, his wife.

Yes. I'm lucky. -- I'm lucky. -- unlucky.

13 will leave tops here. A double top. Leaving the chance for Mike to

break back. One more crack at it. He made it difficult for himself bare.

-- there. Double five. Stay there, Mike. That is the best double on the

board, double 16. 88. -- double eight. One and double 24 Glen

Durrant. That is six darts that he has missed for this leg. Mike has

missed 62 but he does not miss a number seven. Mike Day takes the

lead against the darts. -- six too. His daughter is in the background at

that table, and so is his wife. It is Susan.

Michael won his first ranking title last year. It saw him qualify for

the Lakeside. He is the fourth New Zealander to play in the

championship and the first in the last ten years. Peter Hunt was the

most recent. That was a long time ago, Peter Hunt. For Mike to get his

nose in front for the first time. Two more mixed darts and doubles. --

missed. 18. Leaves double seven. Double ten again. Now a double five.

That finish is letting both men down at this point. They both been

betrayed. Double 24 Glenn. -- for Glen. Come on Mike, nobody wants

this one, you take it. Yes! Mike averaged 77 in the match earlier.

There would have to be a significant improvement if he wants to win here

against Glen Durrant. Understandably, he has taken a bit

of a battering, because he has missed ten darts at doubles. I am

sure he is going to wake up and find out where he is. That is Wendy Day.

That is Mike ex-wife. -- Mike's wife. I asked him whether having had

that first match it made the prospect of a second match any

easier, he looked at me, he grinned, and he said it makes it worse. He

knows what to expect. His nerves are more frayed now, he's a lot more

nervous for this one as opposed to how he was for the match against Sam

Head. With so much travel he wouldn't know whether it was night

or day, would he? Tables I there would have left him a

finished -- a bull's-eye there. -- a finish.
