Day 2 Darts: World Championships - Extra

Hello and welcome to your second installment of late night drama from

the 2016 BDO world championship. Our first match involves only the second

Green ever to appear here at no time hallowed stage at Lakeside. Kostas

Pantelidis was up against Darren Peetoom - both debutants, both

desperate to impress, but who would crack first? Let's join your

commentators. It's England against Greece and, like I say, who knows

what to expect? The first to three sets through to the first round

proper. And each set is the first to three legs. Bound to be some nerves

up there for both of these fellas? Well respected county player - plays

for Essex, Darren Peetoom. Pantelidis - well, this is by a

distance. Both of them the biggest stage they've ever been on. Kostas

basically squirrelled himself away in a back practice room on his own

for - well, for the last couple of hours, just throwing and throwing

and throwing. And I went to chat to him and he wasn't that keen to talk,

but he did admit to being a little on the apprehensive side. Vasos

speaks fluent Greek, for those of you who don't know!

He's only the second Greek player to play at the Lakeside, following John

Michael's appearance, what, two years ago now. He lost in the

preliminary round. 3-2 to Madars Razma, if memory serves. Or if my

notes serve! Darren Peetoom coming through the qualifiers in Hull back

in October. Beat Serle in that qualification game. "Come on" - he

tries to rev himself up Here we go. Still leaves him on a finish. And it

would be against the throw - this would be a very handy start for

Peetoom, if he were able to do this. Well, that's a great first dart.

Single 17 leaves double top. Looking composed now, isn't he? Oh, that's

unlucky. Good darts - not far off. To hold his throw, treble 19 will

start it. He has hit treble 3, so can't now finish. Well, second one

at this double tops for Peetoom. Surely a good marker. This time?

Well! Two 16s - oh, he needs another one

of those. Yes! Holds his throw, does Pantelidis. And life will feel a

whole lot better for that. Bit of a struggle and a nervy affair for both

men, wasn't it? He sort of fell across the line, there. Two double

8s. He has got the flag of Greece on his

flights, Pantelidis. And he does have some family here supporting

him. I think I spotted a Greek flag in

the audience somewhere. When we find it, I can tell you that it is being

held by his uncle and aunt. The first to three sets at this stage of

the competition. And first to three legs takes the set.

Peetoom beating himself up a bit and his throw's under threat here. There

we go! Uncle and aunty and the Greek flag. So far, they will be pleased

enough. .. With the start Kostas has made - holding his throw in the

first leg and a great chance to break here. That's more like it from

Darren with that last dart. Tops, then. 2-0.

Very nice leg of darts from Pantelidis. He's throwing for the

set now. Got here as the top player in the BDO Eastern European regional

rankings, did Pantelidis. Big, big occasion for him. He won last year's

Bulgarian Open. Runner-up in the Greek open twice and in Malta and in

Hungary. Lost to John Walton over in Malta.

Good to see John back playing well. Former champion, of course -

Sheffield lad. Flying the flag for the great steel city. Not many of us

here doing that. But he's there and I'm there. One of the good guys,

John. Both Johns! You say the nicest things! He will play Rob Modra, John

boy, in the preliminary round on Monday afternoon. I think we just

got a sight of Tracey Peetoom. Darren's wife. Is he settling down a

bit at last? Not before time, if so, but Pantelidis can take out the set

here. Treble 19 would leave double 12 - but not this time.

16 for bull. Oh, he's... Missed the treble 16, which would have left

double 9. So... What's he going to go for? 10, 6 or 2? He can't finish.

17 then. Takes out the single for double 8. We've seen he can get

this. But not this time. Well, he missed four darts in the

opening leg. Needs a double to settle the nerves. One more chance.

To stay in this set. Yes! APPLAUSE

Which he does. They're playing for a first round place against Geert de

Vos. A preliminary match, this one. Loser pockets ?2,500. The winner,

the right to go on in search of the ?100,000 champion's prize.

Averages are creeping upwards. They were down in the 60s for a while,

but both moving up a little. 231 required with the throw - still

a slight advantage for Darren, the Essex county player. Missed that by

a distance, didn't he? And he knows it. He has got to just settle down.

That's the one. So 131 - we're getting back on to

level terms. Good first dart. Wasn't really close, was it?

Pantelidis back on 212. That last dart helps. See if he can get a bit

close they are time. -- close they are -- closer this time. Steadies

himself and misses by a distance. Four 20s and two 16s. He has got one

double out of ten, now, Peetoom. That's more like it! Steadier -

smoother. Here we go - no. Thought we might be

seeing the 180 placards for the first time this evening. It was his

third 140-plus. But the scoring at the moment not particularly

impressive. The edge goes with the Greek Pantelidis. Peetoom only

averaging 72 and his doubles are pretty awful. Amazing, really, that

he's still in this set - but he is, at two legs apiece. Pantelidis had

two darts to win the set without losing a leg. But missed 'em. Well,

he's taking this almost by the default, isn't he? Those were good

darts, though. 12 darts he has had to there and double tops required.

OK, for the set. And a 13-dart leg. Two 10s. No, he bust it. Just the

wrong side of the wire. That's more like it. Too late now, though, I

suspect. He's got another six darts if he

wants 'em. Surely one of these will go in. Double 10. Well, Darren

Peetoom and all his mates who watch him playing will think he is so much

a better player than he has shown so far. It can be a different story

when you get up on that stage. He's not exactly feeling as though he's

throwing with somebody else's arms, but he is not in the zone by a mile.

Eight missed darts for the set. Make that nine, make that ten. He gets

there eventually! Kostas Pantelidis. 21 darts it took him to get that leg

- and, so, take the first set. And he had a dart for a 13-darter,

didn't he? Doesn't matter. All that matters, as far as he's concerned,

is that the first set is safely in the back pocket and on its way to

Athens. He just can't get those treble 20s

with the regularity that he would wish, Darren. Capable of throwing so

very much better than he has so far. And another visit where he fails to

find the treble. Plenty of fancy dress and dodgy hats

- false beards and wigs - in the audience as ever. Everybody enjoying

the atmosphere. On this Sunday, here at laikd. -- Lakeside. Lots in from

Essex, as well. Well, a big ask, this, when your

match average stands at just 71. And he missed that treble by a long way.

This is to take a leg against the darts. 20 leaves bull. Treble 1

leaves nothing. Well, 72 - the Essex fans trying to rev Darren up. Well,

it's not worked because he has got a 9. Double 12 - he wanted 13 bull.

13/9, it is, which leaves double 12. And he has got it! Will he now

awaken? Where can -- where did that come

from? Well, I'm sure he would say, "That's what I do every day of the

week, it's just the first time I've done it tonight". There will be a

short break after this set. Perhaps that winning leg and that

checkout has just instilled a little bit more confidence.

It's a lot better, isn't it, from Darren? A tonne for 40. That was

just a little bit unlucky - going just the wrong side of the wire.

93 required - and that would be a leg against the throw. Look at this

from Pantelidis, though. Two 18s he needs. Oh, yes!

APPLAUSE Well, he's on a bit of a roll - his

average now has outstripped his Greek opponent. He's starting to get

the doubles and he's starting to - although not a big visit there, not

a big score there, he is just letting them go with that bit more

authority. He has woken up! Settled down. More to the point.

The Bobby George fan club who have been here enjoying the darts all

day. There's just a bit more authority

around Darren Peetoom at the moment. When they're missing, they're not

missing by much. Throwing first for the set. Keeps the pressure on - he

is on a finish, you -- now, Pantelidis. Unlike Darren.

So treble 17 would have left the bull's eye but he will be back.

Well, it's nicely placed on double 12, isn't he, and all Darren Peetoom

can do is try and rack up some points to apply a bit of a tweak of

pressure. Double 12, then, to strike back.

Well, the finishing has been a lot better from both players now, this

set. We're back on throw. It was all

pretty scruffy, that opening set, wasn't it, but it's looking more

right now. That's what we expect - thought he was on his way to the

match's opening 180 there. He will take a 140, when Pantelidis has only

weighed in with 41 and now 43. Just needs this one to square up the

match. That's unlucky. The old Robin Hood

shot. Even despite that, he has a lead of

basically 100. Peetoom. And moving towards a set-winning leg. He's on a

finish now. So 20s and 19s. Treble 18 for double

12. Double 12 for the set. Tony O'Shea was talking about the throw

of Pantelidis and how he thinks it's pretty solid, but there's one or two

moving parts. He can use them. To find the corner

of the double 12 bed - and Darren Peetoom hits back. It's one-set

apiece at Lakeside. It's there to be won, isn't it?

Whoever can settle, whoever can produce something like their A game.

The averages are still significantly below the 80 mark, so it's pretty

self-evident that their both of them way, way down on their A game. They

would hope to be in the region of a 90 average.

Averages are almost identical, in fact.

There's no point hiding the fact. 157 - but no help hiding the fact

that this is not a particularly good game. The pair of them have really

struggled up there. Well, not under much pressure here.

He went for treble 10 for double 18, so... 9 he'll go for now, or 13.

That was a bit of a mess. Two 18s when he returns.

Well, 140 and a little resigned shrug of the soldiers as if to say,

"Well, where was that when I needed it". And Pantelidis gets the double

18 to take the opening leg of this third set.

So not much difference between them. No difference between them in the

checkouts and, as you can see, the averages are pretty similar, too.

One leg in it. Doesn't exactly conceal his

emotions, does he, Darren? Has the bad darts and everybody knows about

it. That's more like it. It's his

seventh 140-plus. Yet to have a 180 in this match.

So treble 20 for double 8. So tops he needs.

Well, we're not expecting him to take this out! And he hasn't.

LAUGHTER LAUGHTER

But I think Peetoom will be massively disappointed if he doesn't

get this. He has only got one from eight - make that two from nine!

It's still anybody's. Doesn't hang about, Pantelidis, does

he? Right up to that oche and just lets 'em going - bang, bang, bang.

Another one into the back of the flight.

Once upon a time, stems and flights used to just disintegrate when you

did that. Not so now, it would seem. I don't quite go back to the feather

era, but... Not far off! I have seen them.

Well, he's putting together a very tidy leg here, Pantelidis.

Twelve darts to here. 81 he has got. Two darts could do it. Treble 19

he's looking at. Well, treble 10 would leave double 16.

So two 16s for Pantelidis. .. To move ahead in this third set. Two

8s, a small adjustment. Gets his nose ahead again. Holding his throw

with the darts. Again! Is that three or four we've had? Three. Three in

the space of a set and a half - you could go two or three days at

Lakeside without seeing one of those.

I think he is finally changing his stems now. Or changing a stem.

The crowd a little bit subdued. That's more like it - that rouses

the Essex continth. Needs a maximum, this match. The crowd need a maximum

to give them a reason to get off their chairs and cheer. Hue -- Hugh

doing the refereeing up there, also working as a spotter for us during

the week. There he is - lovely fella.

He's not having a good leg so far, Pantelidis. So Peetoom, 75 to make

it two apiece in this third set. "Oh bother", he thinks to himself! And

can't do it. "Oh bother", but no real bother. Pantelidis is miles

away - and still. Well, that is distinctly ordinary. Tops for

Peetoom. Well, at least he will be on a

finish. He might have to get it now - as Pantelidis is poised. 10s.

Well, 5s. His family watch on anxiously - but he delivers!

Six goes at a double, he had. Eventually, he found what he needed.

To level the set. Geert de Vos, the man who the winner

of this is going to be playing in the first round proper, one of the

Dutch contingent here. There's Wesley Harms - he's a Dutch

player. Geert de Vos, just to stop people texting in, of course, is

from Belgium. Oh, sorry about that! Well corrected.

Wesley Harms is very definitely Dutch!

60 points away from a 2-1 lead in sets.

Progress distinctly slow. He has had one from six at that double top. Now

he's got it and takes the second set. A 15-darter.

Well, no Greek player has ever won a match on the world championship

stage at Lakeside. They will be hoping that their man, Kostas,

becomes the first. The Pantelidis family giving him their support -

and that's the first maximum! "At last", you may say! Darren Peetoom.

The 51st maximum of the tournament so far.

Gosh, when he's bad in a leg, Pantelidis, he's very bad. He won't

now finish, Darren, on this visit. A good last dart. Twelve darts to 44.

Kostas remains poker-faced as he slips behind in the set. He has

shown very little emotion, hasn't he, since he walked on to the stage.

Darren spluttering in the life now - maybe!

He's taken his average above the 80 mark for the first time.

I'd like to point out he can't actually hear me saying that from

the commentary box! It looked as though he was turning around and

giving me the answer, didn't it?! Treble 20 for double 10. Just

missed. Just too high. But in a great position now. 170 can be done.

The biggest possible checkout, of course, in darts, 170. Treble 20,

treble 20, bull. With the darts for the set to take

us all the way. The second maximum. For the Essex

man, Peetoom. Yes, very nice. Very difficult to

break the throw when your opponent is chucking in 180s and 140s. He's

throwing now. Looking like a different game. Treble 17 he was

looking for. 72 now gives him the set if he can

come back and do that. Treble 20 he's looking at - oh, he went the 12

route. Bull' eye. -- bull's eye.

Well, his uncle is hoping against hope. Treble 19, double 12. Oh, wow,

a double 12! A great effort to keep his chances

alive. 47 now. Dind didn't make a great fist of it on his last visit.

That's more like it - tops needed. That would have squared up the

match. OK, then, another go at double 12.

He never thought he was in this leg. But he has won it! A show of emotion

at last. He knows that's big. Now he has got the throw. And he is

potentially in a position where he's a couple of legs away from winning

the match. Weather bureau Good last dart. That, by the way, was an

English, "Come on", not a Greek, "Ela"! Vasos, do you think in

English or Greek? Bit of both. 180 in Greek, how would you go? Well,

you could either give it the... SPEAKS GREEK

to do this? Yes, you are! SHOUT:

SHOUTS IN GREEK. I love it! I do believe the great

man is blushing a little! I can't believe you got me to do that!

All right, where are we? Well, he's holding his own here. He is on throw

and he has still got the advantage in this leg, Pantelidis. And he's on

a finish. 164. So is Peetoom - a 170 - but that was

to level the set. So still advantage Greece in this

leg. He can do it with another in the bull's eye.

OK, this is to take us into a deciding leg. Oh, for the set!

Pantelidis is a leg away now from the winning the match. Peetoom is in

the position where he has just got to win this leg, otherwise it's all

over. Not a good start. Not a good start! He had that run of form,

didn't he, when he came surging back, Peetoom. But he has just not

been able to sustain it. Good last dart, 60 points the advantage.

That's them cancelled out. Nine legs apiece. Pantelidis just

keeping his nose ahead. And it could be that he's going to get into a

position to end this match in this leg. He's effectively taken the

throw - and that's a good dart. On a finish - 170. Must leave a finish

here, Peetoom. Well, he's not going to. He can't - he can't now. Because

166 is a bogey number. 170, then, for the match. Another

one. Just kissed off the barrel. He'll be back with 65. For the

match. Kostas Pantelidis of Greece. 65, then - can he do it this time?

Well, that's a bit unlucky. Double 6. For the match.

Wow, how much pressure is on this? For Darren Peetoom. 16. For double

top, one dart to stay alive. So double 6 - this is for Kostas

Pantelidis to win the match. Small adjustment. This time? No!

CHEERING Four missed darts at double 6 for

the match . Darren Peetoom breathes again. But must hit double 10. Now

he needs double 7. Oh, he has found it! He has found it! Well, in the

context of the match, and after that first dart, what a great double that

was! Two sets all. Pantelidis with the darts. Four match darts he

missed - all of them at double 6. He has got to put it behind him. What

was you said yesterday? "You can't change the past"... " .. You can

only shape the future". And if ever there was a sport where that is such

a key fact, darts is surely it. If you brood over things and allow the

emotions to crowd in on your talent, that's when it all goes horribly

wrong. Who's your money on, Vasos? It's

wide open, this. It's a real toss of a coin, this, isn't it? But both

players will feel it's there for them to win.

Remember at two apiece, we go to a tie-break situation, where you must

win by two clear legs and then at 5-all, it's sudden death. Peetoom

missing a chance there to put the Pantelidis throw under real

pressure. He's not on a finish. Well, he went for treble 13, hit

treble 4. Well, there's the treble. Single for double. This is Shanghai

for the leg. Always good to see. We've all played the game, but in

the heat of competition, to check out 120 is pretty handy.

Another very British, "Come on"! 120, the highest checkout of the

match so far. It was only with the darts, though.

So still nip and tuck. He chose to leave himself that

double 6 for the match, didn't he? It wasn't one of those things that

just sort of happens - he thought about it, left himself double 6.

Seems an odd double to leave. In the biggest match of your life. Maybe a

bit of a Dutch thing, maybe - Klaasen's a one for that, isn't he?

Some bizarre finishes. Anyway, he missed it - four times. And here we

go into a deciding set. Both on a finish now. Darren to go first.

144 - that's a great first dart. He has had 10. -- 120. No, he can't get

the showman's finish there. But he's putting pressure on the Peetoom

throw. 61 required. To square it up. Tops... Good finish! Checking out

61, one leg each. The door was opened there - not

walked through. He has been good on his 19 covers,

Pantelidis. More often than not he finds the treble when he really

needs to. Good last darts. Needed it.

It's all about who can get that double now - who's going to emerge

victorious and whose nerve is going to hold. This, the deciding set.

Frustration with the first two and then finds his mark.

He has been straying into the 5 more often that he'd like to.

Pantelidis on 202. Good first dart. Looking to the bull with the third.

No finish for Peetoom. Takes the pressure off a little, doesn't it?

Treble 10 for double 16. Yes, double 16 for a 119. Yes! Thank you very

much! A 120 and a 119 is a leg away again. So Peetoom with the darts.

Has to win this leg or it's all over. Seems to have been there

before. Well, it's always bonus time, isn't

it, when your opponent has had match darts and misses them.

Well, that's poor and Pantelidis can seize the initiative now. Tonne

plus. Needs the treble. There's just a leg between them.

Really wants a treble with that last dart - and, oh no. As you said only

a few moments ago, he has just hit so many 5s in the last few minutes

going for that treble 20. And Pantelidis is starting to take

control - that's significant. A 95-point lead. This is against the

darts. And it's a leg that would take him into the main draw, should

he win it, Pantelidis. Only 41. Got every chance now, hasn't he? He has

only scored 122 in his last three viftsz, Peetoom. -- visits, Peetoom.

He's looking for the 25 there. He's all over the place at the

moment. This is for the match. He has

another visit, should he need it. He will need it. And he wanted to take

more than 22 out of the 143, I'll tell you that for free! Well, that's

poor - and that's nerves. 197, then, for Peetoom. Good darts - that's

more like it. A nod of approval. And another! Coming down the board. That

makes things look a wee bit healthier. Well, he has taken out

119 and 120 in this set. Treble 17 and bull's eye would see him take

out 121. This is for the match - bull's eye. The crowd knew it -

knowledgeable bunch. 74, then, to keep it alive for Peetoom. 16 would

leave tops. And he has done it! 74 checkout and he saves his skin and

soldiers on. It's two apiece. From here, it must be won by two clear

legs. If it goes as far as 5-all, we have sudden death. What a good dart

that was from Darren Peetoom. It was just when he looked as though

he had fallen apart, wasn't it? You were thinking, "What is he doing up

there" and suddenly he pulls out that finish. Pantelidis was

beautifully, beautifully placed, wasn't he, and then a couple of 20s

and the two 1s for the 22 and it just allowed Peetoom to revive.

Almost took out a 121 for the match with a bull's eye. No Greek player

has ever won a match on the Lakeside stage. I hope you didn't tell him

that before he went out! I didn't. He really wasn't keen to chat. He'll

not mind if he wins this! They do a big players' parade just before

everyone gets underway, men's and women's championship and the

referees come out and say hello to the crowd. And Kostas was the first

player in the draw due out and he didn't know, so he was in the room

at the back happily practising and somebody had to come and get him!

That's a good visit, 137 setting it up superbly. He will come back with

12s but he is on the throw, so he would expect an anticipate to win

this. That's handy from Peetoom, but no finish. Double 12, then, to go

3-2 ahead in this decisive set. Good darts.

What a good start! Remember, it's by two clear legs until 5-all. Peetoom

loses this throw and it's all over. Solid tonne, bit unlucky with the

third. Might not be the greatest of darts

matches, but there's certainly drama out there.

Making it very difficult for Pantelidis to take this one now. If

Peetoom's nerve holds he has got 80 - potentially a two-dart checkout.

Yeah, that last dart into treble 19 again. Has to get this. Oh dear,

dear, dear, dear, dear! 79 required. Which way is he going to choose to

go? He could go treble 13, he could go 19s. I think he's going 13s.

Well, he has made a hash of it. Up with the treble 6 when he was going

for treble 10. So treble 20 to start this - can't now be done.

Puts a little pressure on this 48. To stay alive. 16, double 16. Or

tops now. Can't get much closer! You can get much further, though! Treble

14 would leave tops. 17 now. For tops. This is for the match for

Pantelidis. Oh, he has missed another one!

CHEERING The sixth match dart he has missed.

Peetoom has to try and compose himself once more. Remember, he has

to get this to keep the match going. 10s - he does!

Scoring is very similar between the two and the checkout percentage is

identical. And the match, as you can see, the stat which really matters,

is dead level. They have been going close on an

hour an a quarter now. -- and a quarter now. A marathon tussle.

Got to give him credit - he keeps missing those match darts, but he

keeps winning the legs with his own throw, and he has put himself in a

good position again, has Kostas. Yeah, he's looking handy, isn't he?

That's a good dart. That's not so clever.

There's that wayward straight dart into the 35. -- 5.

A preliminary round match, this. The Belgian Geert de Vos awaiting in the

first round. Two 16s, then, to move ahead again. He'll be back. He gets

another go because Peetoom, here on 199 - we've already had twelve

darts. Well, that's not what he wanted. There it is!

Well, you know the score by now - Darren Peetoom has to win this or

Pantelidis is the winner. It's the fourth time he has had to hold his

throw to stay alive in the match. That's not a good start. Not from

either player. This is better. Lots of room there.

A couple of cover shots from Pantelidis. Sticking around, isn't

he? Only 60. So, over to you, Pantelidis. 322 remaining. Needs a

little bit of a treble - can't find it. He would love another one of

those - and finds it. Both throwing well on their own throw. That's a

good switch from Pantelidis. Treble 17. No. Well, Pantelidis has checked

out 119 and 120 - now he goes for 128. And this is for the match.

Treble 18 would leave double 10. Treble 14 would leave double 16. And

now he has not got a chance to finish it. But, under the severest

pressure, once again, Darren Peetoom to stay alive. 16 for double top.

One dart at it! So, are we going to have a Greek victory? Double top -

they're ready. Ready to unfurl the flag of Greece! That has missed by a

long way. Now, you can't get much closer! And there it is!

CHEERING A marathon match and Kostas

Pantelidis of Greece prevails. In the deciding set, Darren Peetoom of

Essex - he had a chance to make the match go on even further, but

couldn't take it. Pantelidis gets the darts he wants and wins it. He

is through into the first round. He wins by 3-2. Seigo Asada and Darius

Labanauskas are the modern faces of the global BDO Tour - Asada was back

for a second crack at the Lakeside cherry all the way from Japan.

Labanauskas has the honour of being the only Lithuanian ever to appear

here at Frimley Green. The prize hanging tantalisingly in front of

both of them was an opportunity to face the number five seed, Wesley

Harms, in the first round proper. All to play for and all at stake for

the man from Asia and the man from Eastern Europe.

I don't think I have seen that happen before, Tony. Well, you know,

as I say, just as you are going to throw, it's long. Mind you, I have

been kept in the dark before. I thought we would be having long

chats and singing songs and making witty anecdotes. That's a good

start. No harm done, as far as you can see,

with the scoring at the present moment. A good start from the both

of them. Asada had a very good win at the 2014 Masters in Hull, when he

beat Daryl Fitton. Went out there after to Lancashire's Mark McGeeney,

but he has started well here. Well, Daryl, as far as I'm concerned, is

one of the best players I've ever seen. Oh! First of the match. Well,

we've heard a lot about Labanauskas and we now see the truth. He had a

158 checkout last year. He won a ?5,000 bonus - it was the best

checkout of the tournament. And 140 now to go ahead. Very methodical,

isn't he? Yeah. I get fed-up of the checkouts - especially with the

missus! Asada can only try and apply a bit - put him under the thumb and

hope that something goes wrong. Nice last dart. So tops. Labanauskas with

the throw to go ahead. Right on the wire. A tiny adjustment needed. OK,

big shot. Well, this is doable. The bull. 25 would leave the bull. He

would have to go for it. Double top. Labanauskas. Well, we can't see

where he went - oh, yes, we can now. Just across there to the left. Have

another go. Three missed doubles so far for Darius. 10s now - make that

four. This is becoming a little bit worrying for the favourite. It's

What a start of this first leg. Labanauskas tries against - after

six failures, double 5 is never an easy one but straight in we go.

Holding on to his throw - just about. So first leg goes with the

throw. The first maximum for Asada. Well, he can certainly throw, Seigo

Asada. I remember last year, during a somewhat chaotic appearance, he

did actually put some good numbers together against Brian Dawson,

although he was stumbling around a little bit worryingly. They say he's

one of the top players in Europe. In Asia, yeah. Seigo Asada, I'm

referring to, there. Yeah. That's a bit unlucky - just the

wrong side of the wire - but that's good.

His teacher will be telling him about the spelling of company

"Rising" there! Knowing his bioboy. -- boy. The rising sun. Here we go.

He is nicely set up on 40. Labanauskas is back on 207, but

already with a leg in his pocket. The first to three sets, of course,

takes the match. That's good - put him on to a nice finish. It's double

top. And a 13-dart finish. Good leg, that. Threw nicely, didn't he? Good.

Two good players, these. Labanauskas with ten ranking titles in total to

his name. This is his second Lakeside visit. Yes, two of 'em ...

Turns 140s. Happy days for Asada at the moment. He's hitting some good

shots. Averaging over 97. As you say, early days yet, Tony, but he's

settling into it well. Just shows you've got the feeling of the pitch

and the throw. That's a good thing for your confidence, as well. Here

And again, peppering that treble 20. 140, 140, 85 - down to a finish of

136. And the throw of Labanauskas is very

much under threat here. Asada can go against the darts. 136 he requires.

Looking at treble 20 for his first - and got it. Treble 20 again would

leave double 8. He has got it! So, double 8 for a 136 checkout. Oh, how

unlucky! Oh, unlucky. He has bust it, as well. Oh, dear me - wrong

bed. Never do it. The voice of experience from Tony Green!

That was a fine dart. Asada's just got to do it again. He knows what

it's about. Looks like he can do, as well. Double 8. That's a bit

extraordinary! Get the hit going, baby! What a start to a match. What

a good effort. I like that - it has put a smile on my face! Labanauskas

- a couple of 20s, then, to go ahead and somehow managed to hold his

throw. Oh dear, that was a bit of a nervy pull south. And he has missed

the double 10, as well. OK, double 4. The marker's there. Well. It was

off. That's not my nickname, that - it's

what he really does call himself! Ninja - we'll give him a nickname, I

think. Darius is, "Lucky D". Yeah, we're going to give him, "Ninja the

turtle". He is a lovely guy. I had a long chat with him. Well, he did

well to get one in there because those first two weren't lying two

cleverly. He's a footballer, isn't he? Cleverly? There is a footballer

- there's a boxer, as well. Look at the scores here, two tonnes for

Seigo Asada. Labanauskas, 133 and 134. It's Asada, not Seigo.

Labanauskas now. A nice, solid throw, hasn't he, Tony? Very good.

Very good - very direct. Siego's manager, there he is. Two tonnes and

a 140 for the throw - but still could lose it. Still a chance.

Double 9 is it? No, 20. That's it. Asada then can take the opening set

here, with a couple of 20s. Double top. Oh, good dart! My word, what a

confident start from Seigo Asada. Looks like a different bloke from 12

months ago. He would look like a different bloke from 12 years ago.

Don't we all, sadly! Well, this is brilliant. It really

is - the way they've come out, these two. Decent averages on both sides.

Asada with the edge. Three out of seven checkouts, as well, as opposed

to Labanauskas, who really is struggling a bit. But he's so solid

on the oche, Labanauskas. Watch that again when he comes up - but let's

just concentrate on this first, because that is his second maximum!

Superb throwing. And just look how solid on the oche Labanauskas is -

he hardly moves his head and he never blinks. OK, 16, 180 - a chance

to leave with a three-dart finish more or less. It's a three-dart

finish. 121. 121's certainly makeable. Labanauskas well back on

283. Good standard in this leg. It's unbelievable. 121, then, for Asada.

Starting down the board. He has got a bull, so he is on 71. He has got

options. Looks as though he's coming down the - no, he has gone 13s.

Double 16 he wanted - and he has got it! He has got it. Well, sorry you

didn't see that one, but he had options. He could have gone 17. He

elected to go treble 13 and put it in double 16 and that's a brilliant

piece of finishing from Seigo Asada. Makes no difference which way he

went - he got the leg. He has some confidence. On, it's magic, isn't

it? I mean, we've only just started. I've seen a few people struggling on

the doubles today and on their finishing, but Asada is peppering

the big numbers and finishing wem. -- well. And look at that average -

over 101. But Darius is still in this match. Oh, very much so. Early

stages yet. If Asada can strike in this opening leg and get one against

the darts, it would hurt the Lithuanian.

Another solid tonne for Asada. His scoring is immaculate. 96, 97 and a

tonne. Amazing. Oh, that's a handy piece of cover shooting. Two treble

19s and he has put himself on a finish. The thing is, John, you'd

think they would be nervous. Oh, what a response! He is on 68, Asada.

Treble 20 would leave him the bull's eye and he has missed it. So Asada,

as we said earlier on, has a great opportunity to take this leg against

the throw. 68 he needs. 48 now. Now, he can only go 8 tops or 16, double

16. Double 16. OK, Darius, it's your turn. 65. That's the 25. It's double

top. One to go - may need it. Oh, now then! Siego's back. Well, that

could be an important moment in this match, if Asada takes this out - and

he has done. That's against the throw! And Asada, having taken the

first set, now has the advantage clearly in the second. His manager

is loving what he is seeing! The big smiles from the manager - he's gonna

be happy. Might be from the land of the rising sun - it could be the

setting sun for the chances of Labanauskas, if he carries on like

this. His checkout percentage is impressive - look at that - 50%. He

is averaging over 101 by some distance so far - this is the best

individual performance we've seen, if he can maintain this sort of

level. The sun is shining! Wesley Harms watching on. He is the

Dutchman who's going to be playing the winner of this in the first

round proper. Needs to get some sleep, then. He is having a big yawn

there! A real gentleman, isn't he, Wesley? Oh, he is a lovely man.

Lovely man. He has been coming here a long time, as well. Been a

semifinalist - not a winner yet. He would fancy it. Wesley Harms.

Asada's in a strong position once more.

Brilliant. Look at this. 134, tonne, 134, 83, 50 left. The 61 on

favourite is getting a battering at the moment. 50. Double 16 for the

leg. And for the set. To go 2-0 up, double 8. He'll be coming back.

Darius, 289. He wants double 8, does Siego. Labanauskas a long way back.

The shoulders sag a little bit, resignedly. And now, Seigo Asada,

double 8 for a two-set lead. That's not a bad marker. And he has got it!

He has got it - he's throwing really well. That is two excellent sets

from the man from Japan and he leads 2-0. Darius with the darts as the

third set begins - and some news from Ally Pally and it's a good news

for the former BDOStalwarts, Gary Anderson - he has retained his PDC

title beating AD Lewis 7 sets to 5. So it's congratulations to him Yeah,

congratulations, Gary, and well done with the nine-dart finish, as well.

That was great. Well done, sunshine. Still love ya! Yeah, brilliant

performance. And confounding a few predictions, as well - back-to-back

champion. Here, Asada has thrown superbly so far. The break can work

one of two ways. Will he be able to maintain it? Will it just break the

lovely rhythm that he had developed? Well, he started with a tonne and a

60. So, you know, he is still on the path. 57 and 99, it was, for the

first two for Darius. But, like you say, it can make a change. You're

thinking in your own mind, "Oh, I'm going well", when you are going out

and then suddenly a brainwave. Darius Labanauskas with the darts.

Desperate to hold on here. Ranked way ahead of Seigo Asada - although

that may be a little bit misleading, because Asada doesn't compete in

European Championships too often. Well, Darius has taken charge of

this leg, so let's wish him all the best as well. 127 - a reminder, it's

the first to three sets, so Labanauskas has to take everything

from here on in. The recent terms are set. 127. He's looking down the

board - now he's coming up again. Treble 20 would have left the bull.

But he has got time, Tony. Yeah. No out shot, 185. So... Let's see if he

can put a bit of pressure on at 82. That's not bad. Shanghai if he can't

champion watching on, Scott Mitchell. Terrific performance from

well. He came from behind to come through a really tense opening

we're going to be seeing him again I wonder what he's thinking about

more darts to come, a lot more excitement, thrills and spills.

Right the way through to the climax a week today. The ?100,000 prize and

the title of BDO Professional Darts Champion of 2016. Who's it going to

be? I like the way Siego grips that dart. Can we just get a look at

that? Well, we'll take another look at the style of Asada, although

we're going to have to be wary of a possible finish here. 156 he wants.

Dennis Harbour was in the auditorium watching on. He had a good first

round performance. I've known Dennis for many years. He's showing it and

I'm not! Dennis Harbour came through against Daryl Fitton in a real

nerve-jangler. Went to sudden death, didn't it? It did.

I'm sure Daryl wouldn't be too pleased to be reminded of it,

although he stayed around to do a bit of socialising. He's still up

here enjoying the atmosphere. Upset at the time, but he has regrouped

now and he has got a smile on his face. It's surprising how many times

he has just faded right at that very last moment. Asada on 201 at the

beginning of this throw. Labanauskas is on a finish on 160, but it's a

big ask. He has got to hit the treble 20s, a couple of them, and

then tops. That's one. It's not there now. Nearly. OK. 144. Treble

20... That's the American guy, isn't it? Larry Butler, was it? Yeah,

Larry Butler. He is through to the first round,. Beat James Hurrell -

another tight match. 75, Tony? Yes, it is. We know there's 17, so 18 -

it's double top. That's the one! 2-1. Going with the throw. Talking

about Larry Butler, I actually played against Larry in America when

I was touring in my playing days and there he is again on the stage. He

is not far behind you, is he? He is 58, isn't he, Larry? Yeah, well, I'm

LAUGHTER I can't score! This is good, again,

from Asada. OK, let's get back with the action. This is his eighth

140-plus score. The opening's here. 264. This will

just square it up with throw if he can do this. Looks like he is on a

finish here. He is. 164. It's a good one. He's going to put some pressure

on that Labanauskas throw to try and hold the set, if Asada can close

this one out from here - and he must be the favourite to do so. 164, he

wants. He has got time, though. Oh, great first dart. Bull's eye if he

wants it! Oh! He wanted it big-time! I did tell you! Oh, just a fraction

- the smiles are out again! Sometimes they take a more pragmatic

approach, don't they, and just set up the favourite double - none of it

for Siego! He is good - he is very good! 25. Single 9. Normal. It's

double 8. Double 4. Still with a chance. 203. Yep, he'll come back

with another chance to take that leg and continue in this set. He's 2-1

down at the moment but still favourite to square it up at two

apiece. So let's see if he can do it this time. A pair of 2s for Seigo

Asada. Labanauskas waiting - but he won't get a chance! Asada takes it

out and it's 2-2. Well, now you know the score here, you know the set-up.

If Labanauskas doesn't hold his throw here, it is Seigo Asada who

will go through in straight sets. OK. 2-0 in sets. 2-2 in this set.

Seigo Asada. Asada's average has come down a little - he has just had

a little bit of double trouble. He started brilliantly in the first

set. Then in the second, just a little bit more human. Never seen

him smile. You'll see him smile if he wins! Yes! Still fighting away -

a maximum. His second. Fourth of the match altogether. We are seeing some

great darts from these overseas players.

Just a bit over the top. Caught the flight and it veered away. Only a

matter of time, Tony. You sort of feel that one of the players from

the far east really makes a big breakthrough. Well, Paul Lim, a

friend of mine... Singapore, wasn't he? Singapore, yeah. He had a

one-dart finish in the BDO. 1990 - that was when that was. Well, there

you are. Like I said, I was playing golf with him in the morning and on

the night-time he got a nine-darter. Did he beat you? Yes, he did!

LAUGHTER I bet he could putt! So did Simon!

Good dart. Now, he has got to get Shanghai here, he's looking for. OK.

I'd go for the 20s. Treble is needed. Can't finish now. Asada on

108. Asada can win the match here. This is for the match. 108 to win

3-2. Steady the nerves, my boy! A treble 20 would leave double 14 if

he fancies staying where he is. Can't do it now. So Labanauskas

breathes again. OK, you've got to get it, Darius! I would think the

way your partner is playing. Double 10. Well done! Well done - it

continues. What a battle - what a struggle - that was. That was just

to hold his throw. But we want more of this, don't we? And he has got

the set and that's the important thing and it's now 2-1.

The scoring power has just come down a notch from where it was earlier

on, but it's a real good tussle this, and good to watch. Well,

they've found their range very quickly. Especially Asada. That's a

slip. Now then. Now then! When you've lost a set - he's 2-1 up -

but suddenly he has got to guard against those negative thoughts come

into the back of his mind. He has got to stop thinking, "Well, I've

lost that one, if I lose another one it's all going down to the wire". He

has got to keep on attacking. He is - he is back in with the trebles.

There they are, two of 'em. The tenth score of 140 or more, plus a

couple of 180s. Relentless. 180 leaves double. I think he would

be quite happy with that. 140 wouldn't be bad, would it? Yeah,

yeah it would be handy! As it is, it is a tonne. It is an a Shanghai out

shot. Nothing to do for Darius yet. Goes across, changes the angle. And

it was well worth doing. So Shanghai - that's the treble, the single and

the double, all on 20s. That's the aim. He has done the hard part.

There's the if a 20. -- the fat 20. Oh, and the double just the wrong

side of the wire! But 169 - can't finish. Double top coming in for

Asada. Still in the mire. Here we go. It's double top. Could be the

best of order. Double 10. That's the one! Brilliant. First leg of the

fourth set. Holding with the throw. And that's the first little step

towards the victory which could take him into the - well, it would take

him into a first round match against Wesley Harms, if he can come home

ahead of Darius Labanauskas. Good player, Wesley. Plus, a nice guy.

Say good luck to bed. But he's done it. He got it over there.

This is good. Yes... Well, he is worried he is going to knock the two

of them out. And liesly coming second... It was on the... Yeah, he

got a splatter into the two of them, and left with nothing. Yeah.

136, finish is on. Not now. He's got another three.

Well, he is not quite done as much as they should have done. 92 is not

a bad lead, but Asada can put him under pressure if he gets a big

score. He is doing precisely that. And Labanauskas, it's starting to

look like a must-get, this. He's left a bull's-eye. Oh, near,

near, near. Think he thought it was in. Treble ten, double 16...

20. It's double 16 now. Take your time. Still a chance. Darius has got

a bit of tidying up to do. He is on 31. Double 12 with the seven there.

And that puts him back on level terms in this fourth set. One leg

apiece. A rather fetching hat. He is waiting

for Santa, I think. A slightly unnerving experience

earlier on, I went to the install gentleman's room, and a bit of

strange breathing coming from one corner, and I looked around, and

there was Darth Vader. I I said to him, I hope it's the mask making the

noise, or you got a bit of problems here. Had a laugh. Star Wars is

everywhere at the moment, isn't it? Even at the Lakeside.

There it is. There he is. I didn't know, that is what Darth Vader

really looks like! Right in front of him. Sitting on the table. There it

is, yes! I don't know what turned out to

drinks... Didn't look terribly intergalactic, did it? Down 280

after 12 darts. Darius, 213 to play with.

Asada on the finish. 80 now, he lines up for. Treble 20. Double ten

-- double ten. Oh, perfect! He's a leg away from

victory. Well, his manager has never stopped smiling. And that's how well

he's playing. You'll see the big lad on stage wreathed in smiles as well.

He's got a chance. And it looks as though he is doing that, Tony!

That's two. Oh, still pretty good. 11. Darts like this, you'll win the

title, sunshine. Watching on, the pairs partner of

Darius Labanauskas. Due to play Gary Robson, the number 13 seed. , yeah,

he's got a task on his hand then. A good player, he is, and Robson, we

know what he's all about. It will be a good tussle, that. Yeah.

Oh, good recovery there. He needed that. Asada gets a big hit now

though, he's going to be sitting pretty. 130 would be handy.

Difficult to get a treble now. Yeah, I thought he would change there.

Probably should have done. Yep. Yes, come on! Don't rush it. You

have got plenty of time. Can Asada get himself onto a finish? 262 here.

It's a difficult one, if he gets a tonne, he can't finish on a 162. 40

would do the trick! Well, he's done it. 122. That will do you.

Solid response but Asada can win the match here. 122. Treble 18 would

leave the bull's-eye. He is good with his finishing as well, you

know. He really is. He's a good player, I told you. Averaging 93 and

he's had some big hits and some classic finishes. However, let's go

to Darius. He's got a Shanghai shot to save it. Oh, dear. Can't be done

now. Immaterial. No matter what he gets. Because 32, double 16, it's

over. He is coming back for the match. Double 16 for a place in the

first round, against Wesley Harms. Double 8 to steady the nerves.

Double 4. Oh, no! Oh, dear! He is not smiling now, his manager. OK...

Blocked the better bit, but... It's not all over yet! What a good dart

that was, because the line was not particularly well. He was able to

slide in over the top. 2-2. What a match this is. See these players and

it's been fantastic. Been a good game. Asada has got the throw. Could

be important. In theory, he would be the favourite to get first to the

finish. Let's take it all away. Labanauskas, a real tussle in his

first round match last year. Went out against Robby Green.

we go. One. Two... Match darts are going begging again!

Tops. To go two-all in sets. Oh, he's missed it! Oh, dear! Look at

that! They can almost barely stand watching. Is there now, it's all in

your hands, hook. He does it! Delight. It's all over. What a

shame, I could have watched those darts right through the night.

Absolutely brilliant drama. And a Japanese style bow from Seigo Asada,

he looked like a completely different player from 12 months ago,

performed really well, and he's won it by three sets to one. Nine times

women's world champion Trina Gulliver was back for a 16th

consecutive appearance, a resume rather different to her opponent,

Dee Bateman had not been here for ought years, and the win, of this

one would face the very much in-form Lisa Ashton, who has taken one step

closer to a had electric of titles. -- to a hat-trick of titles. First

to two sets, through to the quarterfinal against Lisa Ashton.

The first darts she's thrown on the Lakeside stage sin 2008. Not like

she planned them. And there is the golden girl... Trina Gulliver. MBE

and truly deserved. The nine time world champion, seeded eight this

year. She's won a staggering 82 world ranking titles. Looking for

83. It's that number ten that's been annoying her -- annoying her, ever

since 2011. The lady from Manchester that's really put the boil on.

Stopped her parade, unfortunately. Yeah, Lisa Ashton awaits in the

quarterfinals of course. Well, happy to win... Sorry, Carry on, Tony. I

was going to say, Dee is not started in the best of ways. 46, 41 and 22.

You can tell, the other lady's nerves were large. I mean, it's the

spotlight. Well, as I say, she is making her second appearance on the

Lakeside stage. As trina comes close to the first maximum of the match.

There we are. In and out. Shanghai when she comes back. A couple of

good wins in the qualifiers. But this is for the opening leg.

And the first leg, Trina Gulliver! Straight along the barrel. It's

trina to throw first in the second leg. Game on. Trina to throw first

in the second leg. Game on. Good so see Trina back to something like her

best. Have a look at Dee here. Takes quite

a while between the dart being released and the dart landing on the

board. Go and make a cup of tea. Yes, straightaway. Into the treble.

Trina is much more forceful with her throw. Let's have a look at this one

of Dee. Her stance. Very small throw.

There we go. Really pushes them through here, does Trina.

Enjoyed themselves today. Never been away. Some wonderful darts.

A bit of a problem with her left hand. 96. That's good.

She has the darts in this leg. Yes, 135 the finish and not a bad finish.

60. Trina, you require 135. Slowly but surely, you get the feeling that

Dee Bateman is working her way into the match. She's getting closer and

close tore the trebles. Trina liked her role of 25 there. So 16s or 8s.

Could be treble 19, the shot. That leaves 70. We'll see. That's 19.

Treble 20... For a two-leg lead, tops for Trina.

Tens? Good dart. There is the... So will the advantage -- with the

advantage in this throw, I think she's going to start hitting into

the trebles. So Dee did really well, there is

Jodie, her niece. She did really well to come through those

qualifiers last October. She defeated a former world Masters

champion, followed by a Japanese player, 3-0 in the five. Yes, back

on form, ain't she? Yeah, Trina is back on form, and Dee is back at

Lakeside after seven years of watching it on telly. She lives the

barrow in furn yes in coupleburia, Dee Bateman, but she plays darts for

Yorkshire, he birth county. Well, some hair styles, but nothing

like that before. That This is for the first set. It's a

race to two. In the women's first round.

Gets into the trebles, trying too hard. Tell you what, she can really

play, Dee Bateman. She won seven ranking titles, most reasonable, the

Welsh classic of 2009. She needs the red bit at the top of the board.

She'll be back. 230. It's what is Dee is looking at,

for the score. She hit it in the last leg, she

missed Well, already, one set up with the

throw in this second set. Dee Bateman, really not doing anything

at the moment. But we'll see. Played quite a bit on the circuit last

year, did Dee. England Masters, England classic, the British Open,

the England Open and the international Open, and the Welsh

Open. She reached the last 16 in the Isle of Man. That's better. Right

down the oche here. Blocked the bed. She'll have to

switch. Be nice to see Dee produce some of her best darts. At some

stage this evening. Come on, there will be nerves. That

is what you can put it down to. Mind you - Happens to the best of

them. Yeah Dee has beaten that score. Come on, Dee.

There you go. She can do it! The thumb is warming up as well. She's

not had a dart at a double yet. As Trina goes onto the boil, Dee has

six darts at one foray. That's the first darts blocking the

bed. Might have been better going off the 19s, but she knows what she

wants. Chance now for Trina to step in. Blocked the bed a bit as well.

It's been a very patchy sort of leg from Trina. She is on a finish,

finally. Treble 17 for double 18 for dee. Not

far away. Wrong treble. Well, Trina left it. Can she get it?

No, not this time. , treble 20 - sorry, treble 10.

Single nine leaves double 16. It's double 16. This is her first dart at

a double all match. Treble 15. Double top. Oh, just

pulled it down. A chance... Three darts.

Yes! It's there! Could change the picture now.

This is better. Something to think about and now she does. The first

darts and the third dart for a 125. Seems an odd thing to say at about

nine times world champion, but Trina seemed to lose a little bit of focus

in the last leg. Psychiatrist after visit, she was failing to find the

trebles. What it's done - given Dee a bit of confidence. Now, wasn't far

away from her maximum as well, a bounceout on the wire.

Treble 20. Oh, unlucky! Still relatively early stages of

this second leg of the second set. No-one is taking charge.

Right back at ya! Yeah, couldn't get another one in the treble 20, but

certainly went for them 19s with venom. She's left 159 - and you

can't finish on that. In practice, it's the sort of thing

this far, it would have been sad, wouldn't it? I'm sure that Dee's

pleased because now she can show a true pace with the arrows. Trina had

darts to win both of the legs that she lost. ..In this set.

The deciding set - if it gets to two legs apiece, it's sudden death.

Good start from Dee. Yeah, solid 95. We haven't seen a maximum yet in

this match. Trina has hit 54. .. On the world championship stage -

that's a record, but she has not hit one since 2012.

Steady throwing for Dee - 95 and 85. It juices the tonne there that Trina

had with the first three darts. Advantage, Dee.

Oh, unlucky. Caught the flight. Suddenly Dee will be Big Bash League

that she can win this match. -- suddenly Dee will be believing that

she can win this match. She looked all at sea in the first set. I think

the nerves will be jangling in Trina. Well, Trina looked to be

sailing along serenely, as we know she can, and then all of a sudden,

midway through the first leg of the second set, something seemed to

happen. Something changed. She did have darts to win that leg and the

next one. But at the moment it's three legs apiece, one-set apiece.

-- one set apiece, and it's Dee, you would say, who's looking the more

likely. But then again, Tony, you never know what happens when the

finishing line hoves into view. Exactly. That's when the nerves come

into play. Well, that's going to help. But only a little - because

that's not a finish and nor is this. 159, as you say - no finish. And 169

also not a finish. Here we go. That's Snow White, I think - I

wonder where the single seven dwarfs are! Heading down to the nitty

gritty now. Deep breaths. To the oche. 76. Double 8. Double 4. Quick,

before the treble 20 one falls out! Two 4s to hold her throw - yes!

For the first time in this match, Dee Bateman is ahead. Can she stay

there? How the scenery has changed. Just signs towards the end of that

last leg, though, of Trina Gulliver re-finding her form. A couple of 99s

and a 100 to start this leg. This is good from Bateman.

Yeah, that'll do. Well, it took Dee a full set before she had a dart at

a double, but since she has scored well enough to start aiming at the

doubles, look at that - four out of seven. 57%.

There we go. Trina's three from twelve. Good marker. For the treble.

She has a lead of 110 in this leg. She won't take it out this time.

Yes. Thinking. Well, that leaves 140. Dee's still

back on 267, but Trina really should have put it to bed by now.

It's not been a great leg of darts from Dee Bateman since she went

ahead in the match for the first time. Another one of those. And,

again, should be done. She'll have at least, I would think, six darts

for a double. Double top for Trina. She's already had five earlier. And

here it is, double top. First time. The first time she has

hit double top in six attempts and my goodness me, did she need that.

If she does go to two legs apiece, we will bully up to see who has the

advantage to go first in the sudden death of eight. Trina, as you would

expect, has been there before. She has played three final leg deciders

- and has won all three against Vice Prium in 2002 and twice against

Hunsala again in 2002 and in 2007. A lot of rivalry there - a great darts

player from Holland. Finally won the world title, having lost in so many

finals. So, Dee's still in the match. The 2009 Lakeside world

champion, Frances Hunsala. There's always a battle on between her and

Trina. Five times the loser finalist, the men, the champion. And

it was Trina who did the damage. Unlucky - caught the flight there

and it just pushed it down a touch. Well, it has come down to this,

then, this first round match of the women's world championship - the

best of three legs. Yeah, good marker, that. Ever

closer, she can still go for the treble. Come down for 19s if you

wish. We'll wait and see. Hesitated. She wanted a finish there - and

hasn't done. Oh, lovely. Will she go for another one, because it's loose,

extraordinary thing, she bounces out of the treble 20, which would have

bust her and then finds it again with her final dart! No hand shot

with this throw. 162. So back to the oche. And not a bad finish - treble

20. Just don't follow it with another one! She can still finish.

Two bounce-outs for Dee Bateman at crucial moments and it has let Trina

Gulliver into this leg. Treble 20 for double top. Yes, double top to

move to within a leg of the match - no! Trina had the chance. Dee

Bateman - three darts. Here we go. REFEREE: Thank you.

Oh, dear! What can be the matter be! Yes! It's there! She's a leg away. A

penny for Trina's thoughts. Trina needs all the help - throwing first

in this leg. Trina has had chances. She's only

hit one double top in seven attempts, but look at that from Dee

Bateman - five out of nine. As soon as she found some kind of focus

early in the second set, when she had the chances she has taken them.

One more double from her and she's through. This is - it has to be

nerves, it really has. I know she really wants it, Trina. So does Dee.

Well, the first one to get a treble 20, I think, will win.

Not far away. There it is. Big call, Tony. Trina has the darts in this

leg. If she wins it, she takes us to sudden death, remember. "Come on",

says Dee to herself. She'll never get a better chance. .. To beat

Trina Gulliver on the Lakeside stage. The point wasn't touching. It

would have counted if it was. It didn't have to be in the board.

She'll have to come down, I would think.

There it is. Oh, yes. Oh, yes! That's how it scores! A third 140.

Trina under pressure on the brink. .. Of a first round exit for just

the second time in her career. 269. Not a very good figure, that, 269.

216 is better. Two of them. On a finish. At least. Not a great one,

but she can finish the leg in three darts. Not so for the time being, at

least, for Dee Bateman. She could do with a treble here. Not a single 5.

Over to you, then, Trina. Nope, can't be done. Has had a 135 in the

final of 2005. She will go for the 18 for the last dart. OK. Can you do

it? It's there to be hit. Treble 20. Only the 5. Oh, good cover shot. You

feel for Trina now, who has to hit 76. To take us into a sudden death

leg. Oh, she has missed 16. She's missed big 16. Can you believe that?

This is it, then, Tony - this is match point. Moving in. For the

kill. She hopes! 62. OK. 20. Only 12. Oh no! It's bull's eye! You

didn't go for that! But can you hit it?! That is the question!

Everybody, sssh! Or, as I would say, "It's a bull's eye"! Trina's

here! Brilliant! Dee has just walked the wrong way round. You can forgive

her that. Trina must hit double top. Double 10 to stay alive. Yes! Of

deciders and she has won them all. Twice in finals. Oh, what a

recovery. Save the best till last, they say - and that was. My, how she

needed that treble 20ment -- 20. Oh, unlucky. We don't want that at this

stage. She's had a few in this deciding set, hasn't she? Well,

every dart counts. Just a reminder - whoever wins this

leg wins the match. Lisa Ashton, the top seed and defending champion,

awaits in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Whoever does win will have

to play a lot better than they have done tonight if they're going to get

past Lisa. Without a shadow of a doubt. OK, Dee.

Oh yes! Oh yes! It's hi-Dee-hi. She takes the lead. Supportive as ever,

Sue watches on. Trina switching down beautifully to the 19s. She really

did need that. But this is a good one - a tonne - it leaves her

finishing with 167. Unlucky. Just along the wire. There's Jodie. Yeah,

feeling the pain! Two legs each in this deciding set - and look at that

- just seven points between them. That'll help! If you're a fan of

Trina Gulliver, that'll help a lot! 127. Her first 140, but what a time

to put it away. Needs 127. Here we go - at least six darts for

127. 107, Trina. She was going to go for it, treble 19 and the bull. Just

missed the 19s. Just be careful. Well, she is now the hot favourite,

Trina Gulliver. Oh dear, wanting 228 before the throw. Treble 20 leaves

double 4. It's up to you, Trina. Double 4 it is. Don't rush it.

You've got another three darts for it. Double #. -- double 4. OK.

She'll wish she had taken it out there, because double 2 is not the

favourite on the board. But look at this, Dee Bateman back on 219. Must

hit a bit score to put some pressure on the nine-time champion. She has

taken her all the way. But it looks like Dee Bateman is going to come up

a little short. Still not on a finish, Dee Bateman. So still Trina

- under very little pressure - for the match. A double 2! And she's

through! And, my goodness, that is a huge sigh of relief from the

nine-times champion! It's Gulliver against Ashton in the quarterfinals

and I, for one, can't wait! Fallon Sherrock's had a brilliant couple of

years and not just here at Lakeside. She made the quarters two years ago,

marched all the way to the final twelve months ago and then proceeded

to have a sensational year, which is why she arrived here as the number

two seed. But she was up against the only Danish woman ever to appear

here at Lakeside, Ann-Louise Peters, and she spent most of last year on

the road just for the opportunity to set foot on this hallowed stage once

again. Could there be an upset on the cards? Let's join area

commentators, John Rawling and George Reilly.

It has been far from the anticipated steam-rollering.

Great last dart again from Fallon Sherrock. Peters only averaging

about 63, but because she's finished better, she's still in there. And

that boosts her chances in this particular leg. All square if

Sherrock closes this one out. It will be one-set apiece. Set apiece.

Oh, and here's a big one here. Oh dear. That's a big seven. Well, that

could hurt. Sherrock just moving along the oche. The route to that

treble 20 slightly blocked. Now, is she going to move away or stay where

she is? Well, she elected to stay on that 20. 164 - doable in theory.

Still doable. Still doable! Oh! That would have been the highest checkout

of the tournament and the highest ever checkout by a woman.

As it is, she has 33, Sherrock, to pull level. One dart at 8 - yes!

Peters was closing there. But Sherrock takes it out. Six out of 21

now and the last three opportunities she has had, she has taken and she

is back on level terms. Peters, though, with the darts, in what will

be the decisive set. Best of three in the women's tournament. Yes,

wants that shoot-out now for a place in the next round. Good start from

Peters with a sharp. Back comes Sherrock with one of her own and

then some. Sherrock has got the greatest scoring capability - you

see that, and she almost looked fragile again on that last double

finish, but she held it together and that was a big dart - had she missed

out there, then the old gremlins would have really started, maybe, to

creep in once more. Good switch. Yeah, she will stay

with 19s, as well. Well, Peters is holding it together

reasonably well but Sherrock with the opportunity to take one against

the throw here. Peters is on a finish on 160 - a massive ask,

though. Vital last dart, for 160. Not now

for Peters. Great last dart. The pressure on Sherrock. Peters poised.

It's not what she required. So the finishing opportunity's gone but

that's a handy second dart. Just checking where she's at. 75 scored

so far. Electing for the 17, leaving tops.

60 for Peters to hold - oh dear. So one dart at tops. What a chance now

for Sherrock. Yeah, this will be a big break if she takes this one.

That's not a bad marker. Oh, now - 10s. Wrong side of the wire. Twice!

So, can Peters get out of jail? One from 7 on tops now. Two from eight.

But it's a big one and she holds and Sherrock had a chance there. Fallon

Sherrock's finishing, again, has let her down. A 21% checkout rate - only

5 out of 24. The fact she's had 24 double attempts as against 12 from

Ann-Louise Peters shows just how much she has been outscoring her

Danish opponent, but if you can't put it away, it's the old cliche -

score for show, doubles for dough. I think it was that man who coined

it, wasn't it? Well, that's not actually him. He's only balcony

somewhere, sitting near me, but that was somebody with the old Bobby

George bling. In fact there's a whole table of them. You can never

have too many Bobby Georges. Which is a good job, really! He got a

great reception when he was introduced to the crowd before play

began, did Bobby. Hugely popular, still, around the sport.

Sherrock 178 at checkout, but she's six from there. That's good. That's

very good. Yeah, really good darts from Sherrock. Peters way off. 286

plus these. So 57 to square it up. No checkout for Peters. Tops. She's

not hit one yet - that's six attempts. Oh dear, dear, dear, dear,

dear! She's going to have nightmares about these doubles if she loses

this match. Peters can't finish, though. So Sherrock will go again.

Her family roaring on their encouragement. Tops again. Oh,

missed it by a long way. Bulled it south. 10s - and that's more secure

when she switches down. Level pegging on the decisive set. Were it

to get to 2-2, there has to be a two-leg margin to determine the

outcome of the match. Were it to get to 5-5, they would be bulling up for

sudden death. Beg your pardon - correction on that, the women's

competition gets to 2-2 and then it's bull-up and sudden death. My

apologies. Well, she'll just want to get through this one now, Sherrock.

The doubles haven't been good. Six of 28 - nowhere near what she's

capable of. But the scoring has been good enough. So far. Averaging a

shade under 80. Fallon Sherrock - the number two seed under real

pressure. Came into this competition on a run of form and so confident -

it has not happened on the stage. And it's the doubles that have done

her. But look at this from Peters. She can nudge to within a leg of a

real upset. .. ..On the opening weekend at the Lakeside. It was down

for 19 into the 7s, though, so 156 with the darts for the Dane. I

wonder if the top seed, Lisa Ashton, is watching on. I bet she is.

Sherrock defeated in the final by Ashton last year. That's wild. So,

treble 19 - no, starting with 20. So it will be 19s now. Well, it won't!

Well, that was erratic from Peters. You're on the money on what she was

going for - it's just the delivery that wasn't quite there. Miles off.

The tension creeping in - you can see it in both these throws here.

Well, treble 17 would have left a couple of 10s. Now we've got tops -

one dart. Brilliant from Peters! 2-1 to the underdog. If Sherrock doesn't

win this leg, that's it! The number two seed would be out. And an

enormous upset. Remember, before this began, the bookies were quoting

her at an unbackable 11-1 on. 5-1 on to win 2-0. Well, it's in these

times of adversity that you see true grit and champion class. If Fallon

Sherrock has real designs on going all the way this year, she has got

to produce now. A great last dart! That was a lovely cover shot. And we

go to sudden death, if Sherrock can manage to win this leg. She has got

the advantage, with the throw. In all probability, she's going to have

first crack at a finish. You can sense the tension. In the crowd, as

well. Murmerring, "It couldn't happen, could it". Her twin sister

and mum watching on. There's mum. Peters, meanwhile, is right behind

her. Nothing in it. Well, that's not good. Peters can seize the

initiative here. Needed a treble, but she's there, she is in there

jabbing away, Peters. Nail-biting stuff, George. Sherrock with a

much-needed 140 - if ever that was an opportune moment. But she has got

to finish and that's what she has not been doing, John. Peters on 78 -

Sherrock 56. She should have two darts in it. Double 16 to stay

alive. She wasn't going for that - but double 16 she gets! Great

bottle! REFEREE: To determine who will throw

first in the final leg the players will throw for the bull's eye. It

will be Ann-Louise to throw for the bull's eye first. So who is going to

get the darts? 25 - that is removed. So the darts go to the Dane,

Ann-Louise Peters. Sudden death leg. Tension now. And every leg in this

deciding set has gone with the darts, hasn't it, John? I'll bow to

your research on that one! Have you seen my notepad?! No, I leave that

to you! LAUGHTER

from both. One dart in it and this could be it! How rattled it

Sherrock? -- is Sherrock? My word, she could do with a treble here. Oh,

and all she gets is a 1. She is on very thin ice now. Wow. This is

sudden death. This is a moment where she has got to compose her. And

she's 200 adrift. Great dart! Needs another. Brilliant response! That

was minimum. She's still 50 behind. Look at this from Peters. Oh, it's a

shame about the last dart, but she has still got a distinct advantage

here. It can be done - 154. Great first

dart! Loose second one. But she has got a cushion. Peters will come back

with the darts and only 72 for a major Lakeside upset. Fallon

Sherrock at 100. 72 for Peters. How good is her nerve? Tops now. For the

match! She's got it! She's got it! The number two seed is out and

Ann-Louise Peters - a rank outsider - finds the double! The form book is

torn up! Fallon Sherrock, the finalist last year, defeated and

Ann-Louise Peters - perhaps the best performance that she has produced
