Day 3 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Hello, everybody. Welcome to peaceful Lakeside. It has calmed

down considerably after a raucous conclusion to the BDO World Darts

Championships. Highlights of all of tonight's three matches on the way

and we begin with the Dutchman against last year's beaten finalist

Dean Winstanley. After the magnificent debut, he hopes to go

one step further. ANNOUNCER: Double 8.

He has delivered. He was pushed so, so hard by a brilliant performer

I did have him shaking and he will not disagree to that. But, yeah, I

can honestly say - the better man won on the day. That is why he is

world No. 1 and world champion. This year, I need a kick up the

backside, if you know what I mean. I need that fire again. I want it

so bad, but I just - I need that adrenaline and hopefully it will

come Monday. The scoring I am hoping will be the co. The doubles,

I am struggling. -- will be the key. The doubles, I am struggling. I am

hoping it will be a minor glitch. I am hoping the pressure will bring

it into perspective. If I keep myself calm and everything, I think

I will be all right. He is a grand player. He is a fast

player. That is what you get from Holland and the Dutch players. I am

not going to go for his pace and I think he knows that. He will have

to either sit back and wait or come down to my level. It will be a

really good game, I think. I am in a better frame of mind and learning

to deal with things a lot better. The main thing now is the head is

fine, but getting this bit right. The 5% out of the 100 is in this

hand. If that all comes together, I think I will be all right.

As the whole match hinged on the single throw of the double 8.

Winstanley is just slowed down his scoring and started to miss more

doubles that has given the Dutchman the opportunity. We all know the

potentials there. He's just got to hold his throw. Maybe he can relax

It all worked out. He didn't miss it after the double for 5 legs

because he didn't have one. He's only had 10 opportunitys in the

match. That is 50% is excellent. Winstanley, when he's gone away

from the double shot has missed a lot of shots and a double and

crucialy towards the end of that third set he started to miss

doubles as well. Including one for the match, of

course. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

He till got through in the treble and he's still got the darts in

this set. He can start three out of the five legs. Well, down to 121

with ten Berge back on 310. He has to break again, does the Dutchman,

if he is to force the deciding set. He would have had a huge adrenaline

surge when he hit the double 16 dart to win that set and now he's

just got to regather himself. an old friend coming back to say

hello. Ten's Morning News ten, game opportunities because there was

room either side and a little bit underneath as well.

Everyone, I promise you, was thinking about when the first two

went in, but this is a lovely looking leg for him. He hit the

ball as well as his final dart there.

ANNOUNCER: The second round, Joey ten Berge. Game on.

And a cool 10-dart leg. And he would do it against the

Winstanley throw. Unlucky to have such a big

deflection with his last taking it out of the treble 20. He's woken

Winstanley up who gets no big deflection. A big reaction.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE ANNOUNCER: 77. And that big

reaction to the Winstanley 180 seemed to put ten Berge off his

first start. He snatched it and rushed it. He still needs to break,

remember. Winstanley leading by two sets to one. With the darts in the

set. So 99 left. Sure, we will be looking at 19s. To be honest, a

single probably suits Winstanley better than the double in that

respect. He could go two doubles, if he so wished. He hit the treble

which means it is a double 10 which he's missed 10 times now. 12 times

now. 11 times he's missed that double 10.

It is a shake of the head, come what may, and it might cost him. He

needed a treble 17 did ten Berge. A lot of pressure on the No. 3 seed

here. And the pressure told. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

ANNOUNCER: Dean Winstanley. Another big sigh of relief. Once again,

Winstanley needs one more leg the take the match. He's missed the

dart for the match, remember. Here is an opening. Even if he fails to

break here, he will have the dart's next leg. Ten Berge opened with 43.

Winstanley could only reply with 59. They are not enjoying this at the

moment. I am not sure why our referee called that a 5. It looked

to me -- called ta a 5. That looked to me like a 40. 1, 20 and 19. Deep

is actually looking at the score and saying, "I got 40 there." He

should be applauded for that Winstanley. He didn't have to tell

our referee he had made a mistake. It is not his job to do so.

APPLAUSE If you ever want an example of

sportsmanship of the highest quality, look no further than what

Winstanley has just done there. Brilliant.

APPLAUSE Joey ten Berge says, "Thanks a lot,

elimination, remember. Oh, good. Winstanley, once again, a big score

at the right time. Joey ten Berge wants another treble 19 or a single

left himself 8 for tops for the match. For Winstanley - oh, he's

missed another one. A treble.

He said that he has problems with his counting sometimes. Ten Berge

is back in. Double 16 and saves the match again.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE It is 2-2 and it is two doubles for

the match now. That's for the No. 3 seed. He might yet make it third-

time lucky if he gets an throwing for the match. Feeling the

mains by force of mind to get the third dart into the red bit.

dear. That is cruel. Half a millimetre away from a 140. Instead

he is a 26. He is something hurricane leeean from here, ten

Berge. -- hurculean. Winstanley will be on a finish when

he comes back with ten Berge back at 3, 5rbgs.

Treble 18 leaves bull. He doesn't have to go for the bullseye. He is

thinking and counting. Is he going for 10 or the bull? He went for the

bull! APPLAUSE

Wow! Why did he do that? I can quite work out why Dean Winstanley

didn't go for the 10. He needed a bit of luck. But he has. He hit it

with his first and Dean Winstanley not without a hiccup along the way.

Last year's beaten finalist, he is through to the last 16 here.

CHEERING They call him "over the top" and he

is into the second round, but Dean Winstanley, sliectly relieved, I

think. I really am, yeah. I am over the moon, over the top, whatever

you want to call it. I feel fantastic. I didn't go in full of

confidence and I have come out on top. What more could I ask for?

you feel the pressure of being a marked man this year. Last year you

were slightly under the radar but everyone was expecting and hoping

for a big performance out there? Yeah. I can honestly say yes, maybe,

using Twitter and things like that. When they say, "We have got money

on you." All I can do is go up there and what it is, it isn't. I

am still in. Keep your hopes up. I am still going. It was the tale of

two doubles. The 10 you couldn't get anywhere near, but the 5 got

you out of jail again and again and again. And that double, double 5.

John Walton knows about this. They gave me a telling off a few years

ago about 4506ing double 15, double 5. Yeah, 5 has always been my

favourite double. Dave Prins will sit at home and say, "I knew he

would do it." You know what I mean? The double 5 will work. Nice one.

Deano on another beano at the Lakeside as we move on to another

Dutch debutant, Benito van de Pas, theying on the ever-popular Alan

Norris. He starred playing at the age of nine. He's won several

international tournaments, but when he gets to the Lakeside he tends to

fluff his lines. Maybe this will be the years he realises his potential.

He has his nose ahead here. He is two sets to one up as one leg each

in the fourth as we join them. joined first.

he needs to break that Norris throw. Chuck is not giving him the

opportunity, really. He's really come to town, has Norris. Never

seen him throw as well as this. Yeah, we, he spent a lot of time in

Holland and he's been practising over there. He's been practising

with Steve Douglas, too. Douglas already is through to the second

round. A left bullseye, sadly. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

That is the best dart he's thrown, I think, all this match. There are

all of the "Chuck" Norris supporters. They have all got the

"Chuck" slogans on there. I have to say Norris moving ore a long way to

find that angle. Brilliant. He cut inside of the barrel. He pushed it

in a little. Still, now is this the last leg in this year's World

Championship? I hope not. You have got to feel

for him. Here he is in front of this crowd. You have got to have

some bottle, really, to play. Absolutely. "Chuck" Norris does it

180 with the one dart. All of the slogans from westton-Super-Mare,

those boys. He won't finish this time. Benito with a chance.

20 is not too bad. Oh! Unlucky. A 90 average, van ran. It might not

be good enough to beat Norris who wants tops for the match. Is it a

choke for "Chuck"? Single 9. Two darts to go to save his life.

Complete silence and he's got it. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Brilliant! He came to life. Yes. Van de Pas, who showed his bottle,

now has to raise his game and he's got to break the Norris throw in

this final leg of the fourth set to push us all the way and unless you

are cheering for "Chuck", I think everyone is with the youngster here.

Brilliant recovery after the treble one. A lovely cover as well. That

will keep the youngster interested. Boy, is he keeping us interested.

Never changed anything. 35 scored. Oh, that is unlucky! He went for

the 25 and into the 3 and this has made it very tricky, indeed, for

him on this 119. CHEERING

He' got a chance. -- he' got a chance. He's got to get double top

after that. Yeah! I am sure every single neutral is

wearing orange now. That really did take so much bottle because...

ANNOUNCER: Fifth and final set - game on.

That is magic. You have got to give him credit. Sparkling stuff. Norris

breaks. There have been a couple of loose starts. Yes. With those loose

tarts and with the human -- loose darts and with the human frailty

comes the drama and with the perfection comes the drama. He has

broken once, Norris. He is going to have to do it again. He is not out

of it. 10 maximum so far. What is the record? Hfrpblgts 12 in a 5-

set match. -- 12 in a 5- set match. Four more to go, Norris, to equal

it. He might have five legs to do it in. He might have more. We might

Oh, yes, a chance. Double 18 for the last one. It went out a bit

quick. He chained it round. He couldn't complete the checkout.

Still one, double 12. Oh, dear. Nervy stuff. Another chance there

in the match. Double 1. CHEERING

He's back in the lead. ANNOUNCER: Alan Norris. He is loving it. They

are loving it. We are loving it! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

And that double 18 for Alan Norris giving him a break of throw to

start this final set - the momentum is with him, but we have a little

problem with the score board on stage. That momentum is being

slowed down. The screens need resetting. They have stuck. They

have been reset, the computer said, "No", the crowd shouted "yes" and

we can get on with it at last. The first leg went to "Chuck". He

didn't chuck that one away. Good start. Absolutely. 21st for

the match for Alan Norris. Those 8180s still far away from John

Henderson's record for a 5- set match here at the Lakeside. But

that was in the second round. The record for the first round is 9-1-

80 held by Leo Laurence of Belgium. L esh s Wallace the former champion

and Rod Harrington, who I am sure is watching and hoping Norris

doesn't get another 180. Laurence, hay, the lion of Bruges.

A brilliant player. You never tried Looks like he is going to go 2-nil

down. What is good pressure he is trying to apply there. 16 for

double 16. Why does he get straying away from the double shot? Only

Alan Norris knows. OK. 25 first. There is plenty of room for the

bullet if he gets it. Just a fraction. Double 16, Norris

straight in. CHEERING

And Norris once again is leading in the match. He is one leg away from

taking it again. He is straight anything like it for a long time in

the first throw. Absolutely. Look at that. Bossing the leg. Not

missing many doubles. So that 92 average is the third highest of the

a chance, doesn't it, on his own throw to hold? You've got to give

condition grats to this teenager. He is lurking, isn't he? Yes.

pressure is on. If you are going to do it, take it away. Of course he

can, but not on this occasion. You know what, he only got carried away.

Only 40. That is double top. Double 10. Oh, 130 is a good out shot,

so... Oh! This could be it. A very good shot, 130. Only need one

treble 20, don't you? Yes. Leave yourself double 5. He needs to hit

one, though. They are both over the top. Oh, dear. To save the match,

double 10. Yes! He's got it. This is remarkable, this. More

reserves than Fort Knox, this young Dutchman.

Somehow he is finding great strength and character. He's not

got as many as man United. They are all injured. (Laughs). 112 there

with a treble 19 and a treble 18 and a single 1.

though. Playing like this, every Dutch player that has been on the

stage, that match earlier, that was a spectacle.

Here is the man in the spectacles and in the treble 20 bed. 170 again

and once more he can't find a treble when he needs it the most.

Look at them, engrossed. Oh, look. He's got to get 96 to win the match

then. So, 20 for tops for Norris. He's done it! Alan Norris, great

character! Great strength, the Englishman. He knocks out the

courageous young Dutchman who really gave it a brilliant

performance on debut. He will be back and so will "Chuck" in Round 2.

That is what darts is all about. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

The whole of Lakeside and the whole of darts thrilled for a positively

nice man who at least shows what he is all about at the Lakeside and

he's more in that massive tank, believe me. An average over 90,

both of them, and a one and three checkout ain't too shabby either.

That just leaves Tony West who ludicrously lost his darts at the

last minute and had to find replacements against the man

representing all of Belgium here at the Lakeside Geert De Vos who

doesn't play that often in the BDO Tour, but when he does he can cause

an upset. We join this delicately poised at one each but the boss --

Championship. Some great young talent up on that dartboard coming

really, that he started first and - - He's tidied it up as we have

progressed along. West kest can still finish here. -- West Coast

Eagles can still finish here. double tops will win it for him. Oh,

yes. The third set. Brilliant stuff from the Belgian. He cleans up in

the third set and what a lovely way to do it.

The first leg is Tony to throw first. Game on. It takes some

bottle to go double top, double top. When you have got two darts and

your opponent is looking at a finish, you have got to pick a

target area to go for, so why not? And if the first one goes in, you

can just swallow it in. That is usually aiming at a 20 so you are

aiming at it by ta stage. He likes double top, De Vos. -- by that

stage. He likes double top, De Vos. A big target arrest to aim for.

Either side, lovely. Well, this set is Tony West's to win. He is

throwing first in it. This leg is anyone's. Based on 242 after 9

darts. De Vos can reach a finish first. They will hope that he can.

The confident swagger of a boxer before the bell sounds after that

treble 20. He didn't display any confident swagger with the second

or third dart. What a huge sigh that was between the second and

third dart. There is no need for that.

Another treble 19 for the bull's eye. He needs the bullseye himself

Tony West. He was underneath it and fourth set. Which way does he go,

988 or 17 44? I would be surprised if he didn't go 1744 here. Anyway,

there you go. CHEERING

Four legs in a row. ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, please do not

call out whilst the players are about to throw or whilst they are

throwing. Thank you. What it means is De Vos holds flight and he is

through. Not a bad way to start. CHEERING

Straight to the head from Tony West. He's at that stage in the match

where Tony West will start to think, "Everything is against me. It

doesn't matter what I do. It will not be my night tonight." I wonder

if he is still thinking back to the two bullseyes that he hit when he

wanted one of them to be in the 25. That was just plain unlucky. A

lovely cover on the bullseye there from De Vos. 25 would have left 116,

so it was well worth going. Tops. That was for an 11-dart leg. This

is for a 12-dart leg. He misses, but with West on 300, does it

matter? Not when West is throwing like this it doesn't. He's got at

least six darts. CHEERING

It is now Tony West, the 11th seed tearing defeat down the barrel of a

borrowed dart. De Vos has won all spray in from side to side, it is

not really going his way. West, his ow owis own performance, his

own attitude is not really finding an answer at the moment. Such a

natural darts player, Tony West. is the sort of bloke that De Vos

could have taken advantage of, but he seems to are gone on holiday.

don't think it matters, though, to be honest. He's got the darts in

his hand on the very next leg and even if Tony West could try to fine

something, he's still got another chance. It was always the Belgian

here. Not in this leg and I all feel it is a dangerous game,

deciding almost the leg passes you by. He's maybe just taking a

breather. I wonder who is going to bust this? Two for 44. No point

going for 55 and missing on the inside and making life hard for

yourself and your opponent who is Treble, all leg. It was only a

matter of time before Tony West found a double. But the good

players will now open up with at least 140. He is not a bad player.

That is proper darts, that is. He's given himself the breatheer. He's

not cared about the leg thrower against the darts. He's saved it

all for this and now he is starting to bully Tony West on a stage that

he owns at the moment on his very first appearance. They call it

tanking, don't they, in tennis. this is fantastic from De Vos. You

really have to stand up and applaud this. I don't know if it is a tank

or just a ra just a raery, but De Vos taking control. Although, 56

there, that gives West half a hope. A bit of pressure many his elbow

now with the finishing line in site. These darts for the match. Good

cover. That is a lovely first dart. For West to save it... Oh, unlucky.

That was the chance. He knows it. Dad knows it as well. Could be

another sorry tale. Another sorry tale for Tony West.

Could be delight for De Vos. This is for the match. Double top. Oh,

that is final. That is the hardest to hit.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE He knows it. He knows it.

brother has gone west already. Is the other heading out? He's lost

his way. Are we going to lose both West brothers in the first round of

the Lakeside? Double top. Double 10. Taking it to a third! That is what

he needed! How the crowd loved that. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

He's knocked out the No. 1 1 seed. Bring on the Belgians. March on the

Belgians. The 20-year-e 20-year-n makes it

five new in the second round here at the Lakeside. 16 leide. 16 le

champion is them and some of these second-round ties really jump out

at you. It begins with two Battle of Britains. Scotland's young

ballsy Gary Stone against Martin Adams. Tony O'Shea against

Scotland's Ross Montgomery. Paul Jennings and Steve Douglas, a

meeting of the gentlemen. Robbie Green against Ted Hankey. Size

doesn't matter. It is all fire and brimstone and avepbling his defeat

for second seed. That is an absolute beauty. Van de Pas against

Martin Atkins could go either way. Then for me, a potential classic,

the battle of the new boys who have primsed so much in the first round.
