Day 3 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Good evening. Welcome to highlights of day three of the BDO World Darts

Championships from Frimley Green. We have a lot to catch up on from the

action from seven games and we are going to start with a man who is the

definition of blowing hot and cold. He either goes deep or can't go one

step beyond the first round. It is Darryl Fitton. That's where we are

going to kick off. The reigning Polish Masters Champion, it is

Darryl Fitton. Like his opponent we welcome a man

that won nine world ranking titles. He is the reigning Scottish Open

Champion. It is the Viper, Tony Eccles.

Well, so far in this one we are not such which Darryl Fitton turned up.

We join it at the beginning of the fourth.

Now. He has got to dig deep. It is Darryl Fitton. I must say Eccles is

playing like a champion. Two 14 darters in a row. It is just that

second leg of that third set. It just seems to have swung this game

Tony Eccles way. Critically, he was the one that hit one. Darryl missed

four to take a two leg lead in that set and hasn't won a leg since. No,

he has been very spasmodic, I would say. Yes. This is better. 137.

Well, a little breathing space. So can Darryl get in here? Let's see.

He needs to be in the red. Two 140s and a 139 in the last one

and 137 in this. To Tony Eccles with a chance at 70 for a first leg of

the fourth set. 20 for double 16. He misses this time. I feel he has to

hit this one. Just 20. 9 1 left. There it is, double 16. He is

missing nothing. Double 8. Double 4. Stand by, Darryl. Yes!

He is absolutely clinical, is Eccles. Well, Darryl will draw on

all his experience and perhaps specifically his experience from

this time last year when he was 2-1 down against Van Gerwen and came

back in the second round before losing in the quarter-finals. But he

has, as I say, got that big ga experience. He will have been here

and got out of this situation many times in his long and illustrious

career. He is running out of time. OK. Just 7 points behind at this

stage with a deble in the bed -- treble in the bed and another.

Can he set himself up with a nice finish here?

The answer is yes, Jim. He is on a finish.

89 here for Darryl and a leg he can't afford to lose. A good start.

Two darts added as well. Darryl Fitton ties it up at 1-1. Look at

this, Tony, straight from the off in the next leg. Building up to be a

classic. They are loving it out there.

He has two opportunities to break the Eccles throw. He has got to do

it. Of course, he has to hold his own throw and Tony will be very

pleased with the way this is going. Oh yes.

He won't let go, will he? He is there all the time.

He is hitting everything. 67 Eccles requires to go one leg away from the

match. Treble 17. So 18 would leave him

double 16. It is the best double on the board. Is it? It is! It is for

Eccles! All to do now, Jim. Well, he has to win the next two legs to stay

alive. You wouldn't put it past him, but Eccles is a massive, massive

favourite from here. A good start from Darryl Fitton. Eccles'

finishing has been a little bit erratic, but he hit them when they

mattered. He has every reason to be very pleased with this performance

here. Well, the winning post is nigh. It is all down to Darryl

whether this match continues after this leg.

It is the wrong bed. Well, that's three in a bed. But not the bed he

wanted. Half an inch from perfection. And half an inch is a

massive margin in this game. He is still in with a chance, no

problem. He has got the experience. Yes! It is 180. Oh, look at this. He

is still giving it his all. Double 18 left. And he will need to get it,

I think. Double 18, but more importantly for survival. Yes,

Fitton stays alive. We go to a decisive leg, but Fitton has to

break Tony Eccles, and he has only managed that once in eight attempts

so far. I think we will have to play all these matches in the afternoon.

They have had a good night's sleep. Oh, what a classic. Darryl has been

in some tusles. The only time that Darryl has broken Tony's throw was

the first leg of the second set. He has to do so again right now. Tony's

scoring through the first nine darts of a leg has been superior to

Darryl's, but it is just letting it down now when he needs it. Right,

Darryl, get into the red bit. There is one. There is plenty of room

left. Yes, 140. But back comes Eccles. Oh yes, he doesn't want to

go any further than this. Looking to finish the match, but Darryl has

other ideas. That treble 5 has been a destination that Darryl Fitton has

seen far too often for his liking. Tony is 242 points away from the

match and a second round tie. OK. Treble 20. Oh. Oh, Darryl. 16

scored. The prayers have been answered, no, no, they are not. This

is for the match. So Darryl knows he will be back. Way over on the

left-hand side. He has only managed to take the 60 out. Left on 100. Who

can take it out first? This is to save the match. Which way are you

going, Darryl? Two double tops or the treble 20? Single 20 and you are

living in hope. And Tony Eccles cannot take out 100. Treble 20. He

has got it. He wants double 16. The best double on the board for the

match. He is still in with a fight is Darryl Fitton. Match dart missed

by Eccles. Fit and double top to stay alive and to two it up at 2-2.

No pressure, Darryl! No pressure at all!

Double 10. You can hear a pin drop in here. Double 5. You had your

chance. You never took it. Moving to the oke. It is double 8. Still

double 8. Yes, it is over. What a classic you have seen ho here today

-- you have seen here today. Absolute brilliance. What a battle,

Jim. A wonderful game of darts. Probably deserved the final set, but

take nothing away from Tony Eccles, that was an excellent performance.

He struggled in the first round year after year after that wonderful

round in 2007. This time he makes it through. He has knocked out the

fifth seed, Darryl Fitton. Well done, Tony Eccles.

The first round win for Jan Dekker. A previous semi-finalist who beat

his fellow country man, Benito Van De Pas. But But now, it is the boss,

Scotland's Ross Montgomery against Irishman, Michael Meaney. We join it

with Meaney two legs up in the fourth, but it is Ross who has a 2-1

advantage. Now, Ross throwing to stay in this

fourth set and stop it going to a decider. That was the double. I will

tell you something, Tony, I bet he is a poker player. He has no

emotion. You don't know whether he is going to walk past you or stop

you. He keeps the focus. Well, they can't

say they are not had their money's worth. Ross Montgomery just stopped

throwing there as the songs continued. Yes, it is difficult.

Maybe if he held back a bit before he got to the oke, but that's the

way you are. This is for the second of his set.

He wanted a treble 17. You feel he has to hit a treble 20.

Single 16. Double top. One to go. Yes! The match is all square. 2-2.

It is all in the last set. Sit back, relax and watch this one!

There is miles between them in career earnings. Miles between them

in experience. Miles again them in age. Miles between them in rankings.

Nothing between them on the Lakeside stage. Two sets a piece. It will be

a brave man to call it from here. Meaney with the throw. Montgomery

with the Lakeside savvy. It would be a great story, Michael Meaney. He

has been in the preliminaries and take out the number 16 seed on the

way. It is a fairytale story, Jim. 2-1 down you would think the

pressure would be telling on Michael Meaney. It wasn't the case of it at

all. He averaged 100 in that set. Under pressure. Brilliant. The

consistency is with Ross. That's it. He has got it. Usually all three go

in. He has certainly got problems with

them flights. Unless it is the stems.

Ross first to a finish albeit a big one. 109 is his best so far. He

could do with this 136. It is not going to happen for him.

This is a chance now for Meaney to go ahead. 93 so treble 19. So treble

14 with this last dart. He could still be coming back though. 54

left. 18. Leaves double 18. For a leg against the throw. A fraction

away. He just hesitated for a moment and had a little look. 60 for

Michael. The first leg in the fifth set. Double 10. Pressure time. Got

it. Four legs in a row. It is a long way

to Tipperary! It is a long way back from 2-1 down in your first ever

Lakeside. He has done well. He kept his cool. Look at this, 441 each.

Look at that. Eight legs a piece. Meaney hit his eight doubles in 17

darts. Ross has hit his eight in more than twice as many. It tells a

story. It shows that Montgomery's scoring has been better because he

had more shots at doubles and Michael's finishing has been better

and it kept him in it. It has been a brilliant match, Tony. Oh,

entertainment, you can't fault it. The crowd have been jumping up and

down all night. Ross is out towards it. He had some good scores, but it

is tearing off somehow. Ross is in charge in this leg. Up

and down really. Both players improving. Both are falling away

slightly in the third. The fourth set. He is there again.

Treble 19 here. It would have left double 12. Meaney's finishing has

been good. Will it be good enough here? A single 8 if he wants double

top. No, he is going double 16. It is against the darts. That was

unfortunate. Here we go. Two darts. He wants double top. He has only got

one left. Meaney in the background. He is coming now to the fore. He is

coming now to the oke. Double 16. He has got two darts left. He wants

double 8 with this one. Oh dear, Jim. See if you can bring him some

luck. Ross Montgomery to hold. Double 10. Oh, another miss from

Moss Montgomery. Double 8. The biggest darts of his life. Double 4.

Game on a knife edge. Double 2. Every one on the wire. Every one on

the wire. It is double 10 now. He had the opportunity, the lad from

Kilkenny, but it is 2-2 now and it is one a piece in this set. There is

still all to play for and anybody's match. A massive, massive haul for

Montgomery. And again, this is such a test of his mettle.

We'll experienced hell? -- will experienced hell. That is a good

question to ask. This is the man with the experience.

Scottish international for many years. At the top of the tree.

His opportunity is here. A 63 point lead for Ross. 12 darts a piece.

Still be advantage. There should be advantage. -- the advantage. All is

leg. That is the 60, 70 left. It is the anemometer crowd. So it is all

bull. -- it is the bull. Precision under pressure. Ross The

Boss now. He just has to hold here. He has seen of the challenge of the

Impressed all the way. That is the winner. That is good.

His eyes are shutting. Just get back in the match. He is talking himself

round. 122 from the first six starts. Michael has an outstanding

chance. -- darts. He came from behind earlier and he has to do the

same now. Michael has not done anything

spectacular in this leg but he has an outstanding chance to break back.

That will help him. 148. Ross has to get into the treble. He is doing

that, can he get another? 148 to stay alive. Some way away,

that first dart. Chances for Michael Meaney in a leg

he has to win. Another one of those. He is coming back the 70. -- for 70.

Another big moment. 12. Double top to stay alive.

Double ten for Montgomery to seal a thriller. He composes himself, and

when is! -- wins. Pushed all the way, a sensational match on the

Lakeside stage, and Ross Montgomery who struggled at the first hurdle

struggled again but he got the job done and he held his nerve. Credit

also to Michael Meaney, an excellent performance from the young Irishman.

This might be his first Lakeside, it will not be his last, to remember,

what a game! Montgomery through to the next round.

The badger winning his first World Championship match at the fifth time

of asking. We saw Jan Dekker go around -- go through to the next

round anti-war play against Geert De Vos, of old gym.

-- of Belgium. -- and he will play against.

His finishing has improved as the game has continued, as well as his

scoring, Geert De Vos. In the second set coming he hit five out of nine,

struggled in the first set. Since the second share -- since the second

set, should I say. Very little between them.

We are seeing a great display from these players. Belgium and Latvia.

Their countries will be proud of them, definitely.

180! That was his first maximum. And now

Geert De Vos back with an opportunity, a double 11.

He is going to take it. A double four now.

Double four four Geert De Vos. -- for Geert. A slight adjustment. Went

the wrong way! No problem with the third attempt. A leg against the

darts. That was potentially a big leg. He holds here and he is 2-1 up.

He has got to hold here first. A good start, that is the finish. That

is his friend. Jackie. He looks so fresh. The Boss. He

looks very fresh. You can see how his checkouts have

improved. A poor first set. He missed his 30 -- he missed his first

13 darts. Since then, pretty tidy. I think he is in the reckoning, both

of them are in the reckoning for the title. One of them has to go.

Unfortunately, it is all in the draw. There it is. They are giving

some entertainment to the crowd here. Lakeside at its best! 19,

double top. Double top. Want to go, no show! -- one. 19, the

double 16. It is double top. Just unable to equalise in legs. Looking

at double top. He has got it! He has done it. Geert De Vos leads to-1 in

sets, a great match. -- 2-1. At this stage last year, Bert took

on Tony Eccles and beat him 3-set against one. -- Geert. Absolutely

flying 12 months ago. Scott Waites beat him in the second-round

encounter. Before that, he beat Tony West in the first round and came up

against eventual Champion Christian Kist in the second round. We are

warming to his task now. -- he is really warming. Moving in, looking

good. He has gone for the big finish, 170

left. It is the highest on the board.

Did not get the treble 20 with the first start that he needed. If he

had taken out the 170, Jackie might have spontaneously combusted!

-- for 93. Not missing anything, this is really in it! -- brilliant.

The Belgians and the Latvians showing us what darts is all about.

You name it, it is common from these players! -- coming. Great stuff.

Two 140s. He is back in the treble again. Take your time.

Nine darts thrown. 127 left to finish.

Treble 20. Double 19. It is the bull! Unlucky. He had a 126 in his

match against Michael, he needed a 127. What have done him the world of

good. -- it would have done him. He is letting it slip! We know the

potential of Geert De Vos. Look at this. A treble 60! How is that to

get down to double top? Yes! Another great leg of darts from

these two. Fantastic credit to Geert De Vos. He is on 202, he goes double

19, double 19, treble 16. Brilliant play. Ultimately counted for

nothing. He has only just kept it alive. With Razmataz.

Six out of seven on his own darts. All he has got to do is hold the

next two and he has a place in the second-round and a 3-1 victory.

He needed the treble to get him under way.

He will be back from 90. Which will take him within one or two of the

match. -- within one like of the match. -- leg.

A double top to move within a leg. Excellent from Geert De Vos! And he

is in the box seat now! There it is, hit the bull just before that to

get to the double top. Absolutely brilliant!

He is running away with this leg. Got to get back into the heavy

scoring hopefully to keep his hopes alive.

Very unfortunate with the bounce out.

You would expect every task along the route to glory to be that bit

more difficult, but the average of Razma is higher here. Potentially in

defeat, than it was in victory against John Michael in the

preliminary round. But coming up against a decent opponent and after

a bad start, Geert De Vos has thrown some wonderful. ! -- wonderful

darts. Razma is still in it, it is not over till the fat lady sings. It

would be a shame for him to go out like this. Geert De Vos had a very

tough night. That could be it! That could be the shot. Double eight

left. It could be all over. Double eight for the match. Double

four. One to go. He moves across. Is Razma still in the match? He is now.

Jackie knows that. Listen to the applause. Everything here, everyone

standing. Two great players. We've found some new boys. De Vos through,

as is the Lady's fourth seed, Gore, after beating David from Norway. She
