Day 1 Darts: World Championships - Highlights

Good evening and welcome to the Lakeside country club for our first

highlights show from the 2016 BDO worths darts championships. Some new

names that we haven't heard of before, but the usually suspects are

all here. And one of those faces that you saw

was Glen Durrant. He did so well last year, and he is the number one

seed, and the man to beat. He is taking on Dean Reynolds, making his

di but lure, by he lives ten miles down the road. It Durrant against

Reynolds 20 to kick off the highlights. A magical atmosphere.

join them. What Glen Durrant has allowed Dean Reynolds to do, to miss

seven darts and a double without being punished. He won that third

leg at the fourth time of asking, and won the fourth leg to level the

first set, at the fifth time of asking.

impressively, he tried to regroup now. And looking for a second

maximum and he gets it! 180! To stay in touch. But a 140 and a

for Durrant for the first set. It's a 12-darter. Needed it to be.

Roller coaster of a set. And now Reynolds with the darts. And in the

end, it went the way of the top seed, and went the way of the throw.

A few dramas de-2016 start and conclusion, to put it mildly.

Glen Durrant, never massively dem strative, is he? He is very focused.

Whereas, Dean Reynolds does wear his heart on his sleeve. Well, Glen

believes it's all in the mind, doesn't he? He has his mind coach.

And he beliefs in what he does and he believes in his own ability, and

he produces dart like that. The fifth of the match already. A good

response. Very good response. Treble 18. So Reynolds comes back

and he needs 70 for the opening leg. 66 left. Double nine. Game

Unusual way to get it. But it doesn't matter. He is ahead in the

set. Good fun, this. Here we go again.

140. Not far away. Dean Reynolds in his Lakeside debut.

Wonder how much he is enjoying being up there. Judging by the acclaim he

got when he walked on. And he is playing a bit better now the

adrenaline Rush of his arrival has worn off slightly and he is into the

match. He is composing himself. Sensibly. A loose dart. But straight

back into the treble 20. A few Welsh flags in the auditorium.

They have made that way down. He is wearing his, I think. He may live in

Guildford these days, but very much a Cardiff boy at heart. Learned his

darts in the pub, run by mum and dad.

Stunning from Reynolds. He put the Durrant throw under big pressure. 84

he needs. What a great dart. For an 84 checkout. Sixes. Well, misses and

it was by virtue of that wonderful set-up from Reynolds. He must hit

double nine. Although he did in the last leg, not this time. Got to take

your chances. Double threes is no fun, right at

your chances. Double threes is no board. But they are all on the same

side. , a little smile from Dean Reynolds, who thinks head should

have won that one. Kind of agree with him. He did it the hard way. He

put Durrant under some real pressure, with that 177, quite

superb. I wonder, when when look back at

that match, whether that will be a moment. Three missed darts at double

18, two at double 18 and one at double nine. He has to put it behind

him. Looks as though he has. Well, Deano's throwing on raw

emotion. His fans are certainly a passionate

mob. 13020 got ahead again. He got six if he needs them. What a good

dot. Double eight. 183, no out shot. He can pressure the double four.

Reynolds missed three Darths for a two leg lead. Double four. This is a

Reynolds missed three Darths for a big one. He needs to put this away.

A gad marker. Oh, dear, dear, dear. To move ahead in the set. So 20

leaves the bull. Treble leaves double five. So two fives for

Durrant... And Reynolds gets a second opportunity. Which I don't

think, he could have anticipated receiving and he's taken it at last.

Dean Reynolds is ahead again in this second set. The Welsh contingent

believe. To try and hold this throw, Glen

Durrant. To level the set. First to three sets through to the second

round. It will be a break, a short one, at the end of this second set.

Good last dart leaves the big finish. Will he get a chance at it?

Good dart. Double 12. For Durrant. There it is. Quality finishing makes

22-2. And Reynolds with the throw. How badly he needed to hold onto

this leg and take this one, otherwise Durrant will have distance

between him and young Dean Reynolds. Still no treble here. By either

player. Pressure... Responding well. Such an

important leg in the context of the whole match, this.

Was that a bit of inexperience, a bit of tension? And the way he

reacted to it, would have given Glen Durrant a bit of a boost. In a scrap

like this, it's good to know if you're opponent is feeling down on

himself. Reynolds will try to bounce straight back here. That unlucky.

Great darts. A big dart. Only 100. A 140 would

have been lovy. Only a hundred, the sort of standard we come to expect

from Glen Durrant. The number one seed, really given an examination

here by Reynolds. This is for the set. Treble 14. Double 11, he left.

For a 142 and the set, not far away. So, Dean Reynolds... Unusual way to

go for it. Tops for Reynolds. Missed it by a long way. Glen you, require

22. Double 11. It's not a great one. The far left-hand side of the board.

But he finds it when he needs it. And sure going to feel a little bit

buoyant as a result of taking that leg and the set. He needs one more

to take his place in the next round. Not been vintage, Durrant, not quite

at his best. But Reynolds has had opportunities. He could have been

closer. But how deflated would he have been by that reverse? Come on,

says Durrant. He did and a dart at double top to win the set, remember?

Dean Reynolds. His double percentage is what is costing him. He has hit

four out of 19. Just 21%. Not good enough. Not if you want to beat the

top seed. Had a couple of poor visits here. They both have.

That's better. Back in the groove, back in the red bit, and back on the

maximum board. His fourth of the match. Three for Reynolds, seven in

total. And Durrant has been the heavier scorer. 130 ahead, plus

these. He's done precisely what he wanted

after that break, putting himself in a winning position and dominance in

this leg. All he has to do is hold this throw three times. Now, treble

ten for double 18, or bull for double eight? Single nine he'll go

for now. Reynolds back on 248. Not a lot he could do about that.

Here comes Durrant to take the advantage in what could be the last

leg of the match. Two 16s, now a couple of eights. Very nice.

Looks very much in control of himself up there.

Exactly that is what he'll tell you has brought him all his success.

Keeping control of his emotions. Keeping the belief.

Seeing pressurised situations as opportunities, not potential

disasters. Something like one who studied these

things. I talked to, a lot of tennis players. Joe, her mind coach. For

about a week, I thought, you know what - I could work! It's changing

my approach to life! And then reality kicked in. And Durrant, 281.

Dean Reynolds so much. I said he was a fantastic player. The biggest

compliment, could give him, I never looked at the draw. He was the only

guy I concentrated on in practice, he is a phenomenal young man.

Looking at the 12 months you had, since you lost some sneem. It seemed

the defeat has defined you and inspired you. Absolutely that's the

game that people remember me. I learned all awful lot from that day.

That Martin Adams game, I was inconsolable for one month. I kicked

in from the Scottish Open. Well, in 2016, it has started pretty well.

one in the laids draw. Lisa Ashton beat Paula Jacklin, as she aims to

make it three titles in a row. I couldn't bet against her. Elsewhere,

done. And back in the men's draw this evening, the silencer is making

noise again. The Canadian, Jeff Smith, through comfortably against

Matthew Medhurst. Some of the big guns then had tough

matches today. None more so than Tony O'Shea, who drew in the-form

Jim Williams. Here is how this one finished up. He cherishes his hopes,

but Williams with the darts. A nice solid start. He hits the tens, it

would put O'Shea under huge pressure. It's not lying nicely.

Another set goes the distance. Will it go the same way as the first two?

Will it go to Wales? Or can Tony O'Shea find something? He needs to

find the treble 20. Rchld the winner of this could be #4e9ding towards a

second round -- could be heading towards a second round match with

the Dutchman. Looking as though it's going to way of the Welshman at the

O'Shea, looking at a very small target, trying to adjust to get the

treble 18. Match point again. Another treble 20 for double ten for

the match. This is a match dart for Jim Williams, the isth seed. What a

way to do it! He had knocked out Tony O'Shea, one of the Lakeside's

true gentlemen. So, the Silverback gone, and was another giant going to

fall? Darryl Fitton is taking on Dennis Harbour. This one down to the

wire. We join it at two sets all, and three

Nothing between these two lads, really. Right the way through the

match. Looked as though it was going to be

a close one on paper, and so it's Harbour with those ranking titles to

his name this year, but somewhat belie his world ranking of 23 with

the BDO. And Darryl Fitton, so much experience, but under huge pressure

here in the first round. He's had that dart for the match.

Got to be forgotten now. He didn't need that, I tell you. On debut, in

2003, Darryl Fitton walked a 1-year-old James Wade, miss, I was

going to say nine, in fact, it was ten match darts before hitting back

with a 145, for a 3-2 win. Extraordinary match. Still down to

finishes. Fitton with the throw. Good

He may well choose to go the 19 route when he returns. Outstanding

from Harbour. He puts more pressure on the Fitton throw now. If he

the two players. Harbour to take this leg against the darts. 76.

A single 18 would now. This is for the leg... 61. He

miscalculated there. I'm pretty sure he miscalculated. That was tops for

the leg and the penny is now dropping. How on earth did you do

that, he says. Extraordinary. Is he going to go straight for the double

three? So, one for double one... Well, Fitton makes him pay. And

comes home and wins that leg. And now, Harbour, once more, in the

position of having to do it. Fitton in the madhouse! A double one! When

you're playing Dennis Harbour when a match is this tight, any port in a

storm. Throwing angry there. He he double tops for it. And

somewhere in his head, he got it into there that he needed the

bull's-eye. He went for the bull's-eye and got a 250. The

aarithmetic was wrong and Fitton hit him.

Well, we're just finding out, it wasn't Dennis Harbour's fault. We

were right. Our jackets were right. He only had 76 to go, but on the

floor, he said 86. So, he did, in his mind, and on the scoreboard, had

50 points left for the leg. his mind, and on the scoreboard, had

that's true. Our understanding of it, he was going according to what

he understood to be the remaining target. If he loses his leg, he's

going to be furious. Oh, he needed another treble to leaf

Well, he is annoyed with that last one, but he is poised on a potential

two-dart checkout. He'll come back, throwing, for the

match. He missed one dart at double 18 already for the match. But here

he is, 96 points away. He starts with a treble 20, back at double 18

for the match. What a marker! No! , can you believe it?! He looked as

though he done the hard work. Couldn't be done. And now, Harbour,

a must-get. 74. Single 20 leaves tops. It's hot wouck work.

And Fitton once more double 18 for the match.

For the fourth time of asking... Darryl Fitton aims as two 18s for a

place in the second round. So three for double 16 he needs now.

No, no, no! His wife can hardly bear to watch. Dennis Harbour now, to

keep his chances alive. Double ten. What is going through his mind,

Darryl Fitton? Five match darts all missed. And

Dennis Harbour, he will be thinking that, to that evening in 2003, when

James Wade missed ten match darts to let him in, and let him win, Darryl,

Darryl, Darryl. Five match darts, Darryl Fitton has had, and hasn't be

able to convert them. Now, just needs to hold his throw...

Could have easier said than done. Still, in a situation where either

player can win by two clear legs. But if it gets to five-all, then

it's a sudden death leg. He is looking for his seventh

maximum, the 140s, a very handy consolation.

This match has been going on for 80 minutes and still it's not

determined. Fitton annoyed about that second dart and look at the

third! Great dart! Fitton will come back with 9530 make

it 5-4. The worst he could do, to go into sudden death. But 150 is

gettable. Bull now, to go 5-4 ahead. So 20s and 18s is the way he'll go.

Treble 18 for double 18. He stayed at the

time, Harbour had to held his throw and held it. If Harbour wins this

leg, they throw for the bull's-eye, and whoever is closest will throw

first in one final deciding sudden death leg. But first, Harbour must

hold. Well, 44 is not what Fitton would have wanted. Harbour in pole

position. Nothing between these two guys.

Fitton's average is slightly higher, but look at the checkouts. So often

what determines the courses of matches and

has been with Fitton, but he's just hung in there. That is unlucky,

opportunity he didn't take. The lie of the darts completely stitched him

up there. So, he's on 136. Darryl's wife,

You think in Darryl Fitton will have at least one more. Having already

missed five. Comth the hour, cometh the man. Is he going to get it right

here? And now, Fitton, 86 for the match. 18 would leave him

bull's-eye. Bull's-eye for the match. And he's missed it! And

missed it from a distance. He's been so steady. At the top of

the board. Dennis Harbour... And there it's gouling, for the Ten

time. We are going all the way. This is how it works. , suddenth time.

So, they throw for the bull. If it's in the bull. The second guy can ask

for it to be removed, to give him the chance. The best attempt at bull

here, and they will continue So, a centre bull for Fitton. And he

would have the dart, an outer, we carry on. That means that Harbour

has the dart. Sixth missed match darts. For Darryl Fitton. Dennis

Harbour has the darts, whoever wins this leg wins the match. It doesn't

happen often in Lakeside. It's only the 14th time ever. Whose nerve is

going to hold? What a battle it's been. Not in highest scores, but

tension right the way through. And now, it comes down to this.

What a last dart! Every dart matters so much now.

Good start from Fitton. Wants to follow it in. Wants at least one

more in the red bit and gets it! So early advantage to Fitton but not

devicive as yet. Just 25 ahead. Having to work his way

can do no more than stand and wait. And then, try

now, he just sets it up, invincible position. Treble 17. So

to see what Fitton can deliver. How about that?

Well, for the first time, possibly all match, we have a firm favourite.

Darryl Fitton missed six darts win this match. For the first time,

Dennis Harbour has a match dart. And it's a double 12.

No! Small adjustment. Good marker. Oh, no he has to go across to the

other side of the board. Double six. Great dart! ! And what a tussle

Darryl Fitton will feel that he's thrown that one away. He had a match

dart and couldn't take them, but Dennis Harbour hung in there, and

ultimately triumphs in sudden death, and now, having been so cool, so

composed, he shows a real display of emotion, a battle royale, and the

man from Cambridgeshire, Dennis Harbour, has put out one of the

seeds, Darryl Fitton. Indeed, what a day for Dennis. And Craig Caldwell

won his qualifying in fine style. He'll face Ted Hankey tomorrow,

And awin for the American, Larry Butler. And he negotiated his way

past More darts on the way into the maul
