Day 4 Darts: World Championships

This afternoon we will bring you up-to-date with the conclusion of

the first round, which has taken place over the last few days.

Joining me here, Bobby George and David Croft. Here's what we have

got coming up for you this afternoon. The man who reached the

final on his debut last year, Dean Winstanley, is back, to go one

better. The seeded Dutchman met Alan Norris in the first round.

Tony West lost his darts, but hope to to win out against the Belgian.

And Look Who's Back, the 2008 world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova.

And on a semi-final collision course, going for her tenth world

title. We will begin with a nomadic Alan Norris, who has never really

lived up to expectation here at the Lakeside. But he arrives here in

magnificent form this year. In the first round, he drew the German

Open champion, a me a spring chicken of the sport, an 18-year-

old with massive ambition, Benito I started seven or eight years ago,

while camping. My dad was playing darts with some friends, and there

was always watching. In the holiday, he was playing a tournament, and he

reached the final and he lost. He won a prize. So, I started to play

darts. The next year, I won the tournament, and I got a lot of

prizes. A few years ago, I started to play more, and a was a talent,

and I won very many tournaments. Last year I started to play

international tournaments, and I won the German Open. After that, I

went to England and played all of the tournaments. I reached 14th

place in the league table. Now, I'm a seeded player, I think I'm the

youngest ever. This year I hope I can win a game, then I will be the

youngest man to win a game. I have watched almost all the games. I

know the audience, it is very nice to play here. It is a fantastic

crowd, and I hope I will win. Seeing Clive Barden here yesterday,

it was amazing. There was a lot of orange. My dream was to reach the

Lakeside. And now, award to win. Are you ready? Ladies and gentlemen,

he may befits the stereotypical image of a darts player, a big lad,

he likes a pint and he likes a laugh, but below the surface, there

is so much more to him. He travels the world, he knows four different

languages, he studies the game. He's quite an intelligent guy. He

watching those highlights from just behind us, it is quite awkward.

championship, but he has proved he can hold his own with the seniors.

about 10am, Alan Norris was the first player in the bar, already

analysing his performance from last night, so let's get a synopsis from

sprinter, but last night, he was out of the blocks quicker than

Usain Bolt. You have been here a few times, but that was a

sensational way to start. Yes, could not have gone better, really.

Were you surprised at how well you played? I have been in good form

for the last remands. I'm comfortable at the Lakeside after a

few appearances. I was quite confident. Benito is still a

teenager, is it awkward playing somebody so young, because they

arrive without any fear? Yes, but Benito, he has got a lot of

experience on the circuit for young player. Really nice lad, we have

played a few times this year, he has beaten me up a few times, and

vice-versa. It was always going to be a tough game. What did you say

to each other at the end? You both contributed to making that a

fantastic atmosphere, and you gave it a big gesticulation at the end.

Yes, I was really happy. I said to him, his grandfather would be

really proud of him. His grandfather passed away a year to

the day that we played, so it was emotional for him. I said to him,

his biggest fan would be very proud of him. You hit eight 180s, is that

the best you have ever played at Lakeside? Yes, I hit more doubles

that 180s, which was better. But I have got really good scoring and

lost, it is not the high scoring, it is the doubles which count.

you feeling confident and loose after last night? I will take it

easy to date, have a few darts and prepare for tomorrow. Yes,

hopefully it will go the same way. Hopefully you can stay as relaxed

as you well this afternoon. Well done for last night, it was

fantastic to watch. Going back to what he said, we start with 32

players, nine days, it is all over, so to be in-form is critical.

I was speaking to Tony O'Shea about Alan Norris this morning, and he

said, that is the best I have seen him play. He said, I wish I could

say the same, he absolutely beat me up at the Zuiderduin Masters. The

only thing I don't like is when Alan Norris says, I hope I can

replicate that. He should be confident. And of course we will

not say who he has got in the second round, because we have not

shown the highlights of that one yet. We are going to move on to the

ladies now, and this is the strongest the ladies' game has ever

been, Bobby George? Yes, when we first started the tournament, years

ago, they were not really good, but now, they're really good players.

Over the last 10 years, the difference today is that they can

finish really good. They are not quite with the men, but they are

not far behind now. Get ready for some great finishing from the women.

We have already enjoyed the quarter-finals. The top half of the

draw saw the fourth seed, Lorraine Farlam, against Karen Lawman.

Meanwhile, Rhian Edwards was also on stage, who made the final two

years ago. It was Lorraine Farlam who won the first match up, in a

really entertaining game. Despite high hopes, Lorraine Farlam had

become a semi-finalist for the took out a 119 finish on her way to

a big win over Rhian Edwards. The Welsh girl had the consolation of

taking out the highest ever check out in ladies' darts history, a 155.

Not enough for glory, though. Both seeds survive, so we have now got a

semi-final on Thursday which is just too close to call. Let's check

out the bottom half of the ladies, with the golden girl drawing the

Women's Masters champion of 2011, Lisa Ashton. Meanwhile, second seed

Julie Gore meets Anastasia # Tell me, how long has it been

since you have been here? The last time I was he was 2008, so that's

four years. I love it, it is like I never left. I really enjoy myself.

It is the World Championship, and I think it is always going to be

special for everyone. I just want to go on the stage, do what I do,

and enjoy myself again. My job was done because I put a lot of work

into it, a lot of effort, and I think I got what I deserved. After

I won at Lakeside, I got an offer from PDC to play against men in the

World Championship, and I could not say no, really. It was a lifetime

opportunity. I do not regret it one little bit. It has toughened me up

as a player. It has been a great experience. I would not change it

for anything. I'm here now, and we it. But it this way, I have done my

job, I have done everything I had to do, and obviously you just have

If you ask any player what is the difficult match in a Championship,

they will say the first match. After that, it remains difficult.

We have the defending champion from the women's Championship. Are you

glad to be in the semi-finals? I am. The first one is always difficult.

I am glad to get through it. Your mother sadly passed away before you

came down to the Lakeside. Darts is a very lonely sport when you are up

on the oche and everyone is watching you. Is it even more

difficult? Definitely, although my mother did not make it to the

championships last year because she was poorly. It is even more so this

year because she has passed away. Nobody wants to lose their parents,

but I am fulfilling her wish. She wanted me to defend the title, and

she told me to defend it wherever she was. You're wearing your

mother's wedding ring around your neck. My sister and brother gave it

to me. She has been with you and she is still with you for this

Championship. She always says she was on my shoulder, and I always

told her to sit on my left shoulder and not my right shoulder. How much

did it mean having your mother in the audience?

Fantastic. Everybody says their mother is the best but my mother

was an amazing lady. Absolutely. She was brave until the end.

will miss her dreadfully. Was it vastly different playing in the

first round match this time? Did you think about it? Of course will

stop -- of course. My head was all over the place. It was only two

days before the tournament that she died. I did not think I could cope

with it. But I am doing it for my mother, so I had to be brave.

his dart. What have you been doing since Saturday? You got the job

done at 3pm. I was celebrating on Saturday, Sunday I was practising.

I get into the routine. Rectus, -- breakfast, practice, it can get a

bit boring. Were you happy with the quality of your performance on

Saturday? I was pleased with most of it. I was quite pleased after

the game, obviously it was a difficult opponent. You have the

first round out of the way, now it gets more serious. Ross Montgomery

arrives with some pretty good form. You will always get the same with

Frost. He is a great player. I have never seen him play badly. I will

need to be my best. How much confidence the take from the fact

that you have gone all the way to the final? This is a special

tournament, I know I can do it again, I know I can win it. It is

just doing it all in one week. That is the difficult thing. Now we have

completed the first round, who has impressed to the most? All the

debutants have played fantastically. Jan Dekker and Christian Kist put

on a great show. Gary Stone did not look like he had a nerve in his

body. Maybe adrenalin got that. Now the competition starts. We will see

how he does in the second round. Highlights of the night's second-

Green offered him his. His first three was 180. He knew he would be

OK from then on. I saw Tony West at the concessions stand thinking

West did not like his flight. Bobby George said he could change them.

opened up the match. The key to this Belgian's performance is, if

he can score well enough that he does not feel the pressure, he will

be OK. It is how he reacts, he needs to go into the trenches and

find some reserves. The worry if you are Belgian or supporting the

Belgian, is that attitude in the doubt. 180! He is holding his own

at this stage. Now Tony West is asking himself a few questions. He

is not finding any answers. This is keeps starting off nicely but not

Geert De Vos. Third leg, it is who live in Holland, the

international flavour of this World Championship. And some great young

Geert De Vos now has 99 for it. has opted for the 19 first. Two ..S

will win it for him. Oh, he has done it! Brilliant stuff. What a

lovely way to do it. Fourth set, first leg, Tony to throw first.

Game on. It takes some bottle to go double top, double top, but it is

an eminently sensible thing to do. You have got a bigger target area,

so why not? And if the first one goes in, you can just follow it in.

Which is exactly what he did. The counter-argument is that you're

normally aiming at the treble 20, so you're used to it by that stage.

But he likes a double top does de growing first in it. But this leg

is anyone's. Both on 242 after nine darts. De Vos can reach a finish

not far away. And Tony West also needed double side, and he was

underneath it. So, nine, double eight, for a break at the start of

the fourth set. Which way does he go? He has gone for the 17, double

in a row. Ladies and gentlemen, please do not call-out whilst the

players are about to throw. Geert to throw first, came on. De Vos

from Tony West. It is that stage in the match where Tony West will

start to think, everything's against me, it is not going to Be

My Night. I wonder if he's still thinking back to the two bull's-

eyes that he hit, when he wanted one of them to be in the 25. Yes,

He has got at least six starts. I did not really think that he was

going to need more than one of them. And it is now the 11th seed, Tony

naturally talented darts player, Tony West. It is the sort of leg de

Vos could have taken advantage of, but he seems to have gone on

holiday. I don't think it matters, to be honest. He has got the darts

in his hand in the very next leg. And even if Tony West can find

something, he has still got another chance, even if he loses this set.

The momentum is all with the man from Belgium. Not in this leg, and

I always feel it is a dangerous game deciding almost to let a leg

pass you by. He's just taking a West. It was only a matter of time

before Tony West found the double. This is where or the good players

will open up with at least a 140. That's proper darts, that is, he

has given himself the breather, he has saved it for this, and he's now

starting to bully Tony West, on a stage that he owns at the moment,

on his very first appearance. they call it tanking in tennis, and

this is fantastic from de Vos, you have to applaud this. I don't know

if it is a tank, or just some rapid artillery, but de Vos is taking

control. Although, he only got 56 be first to leave the finish, but

what kind of finish? DAVID CROFT: Well, not a good one,

to be honest. Starting to feel some pressure in his elbow now. These

darts for the match. DAVID CROFT: That's a lovely first

dart. Oh, unlucky. That was the chance, he knows it, Dad knows it

but that's the hardest one, he knows it. He has lost his compass,

he's lost his way. Are we going to be losing both West brothers in the

first round at the Lakeside? Double 10... And that's what we needed,

third time lucky!! How they love that. Geert De Vos has knocked out

the number 11 seed. Bring on the Belgians! Just not short of

confidence at all. Fantastic to see. It was a really impressive debut

from the boy. A lot of bottle, some courageous checkouts as well. A

thoroughly professional job on Tony West. I have done this many years
