Day 4 Darts: World Championships

Hello and welcome to a big afternoon of live darts on BBC Two. Martin

Adams and Tony O'Shea have won 339 sets between them on that stage, yet

in a few minutes they meet in round one, the Lakeside loonies have

turned out in their droves and we are ready to get down to business.

On the balcony with me one of darts legends bobby George. We have had a

couple of stand out performances but we have had darts that have fallen

below the standard expected. It has to be done to Vice Chancellor so

many debutantes. If you haven't played on the stage, you are nervous

but the greatest players in the world have a problem. Like? The

great Eric Bristow. One of the best ever Ever. I looked at the stat,

sorry about this, everyone had to start somewhere. Do you need your

the, distinguished! Now, everyone has to start somewhere, even the

great Eric Bristow that we love. His first match was against Conrad

Daniel, in 1978, he lost 6-3 and average was 74.71. That is what we

have been seeing this week. That is the first time he was here, great

player, one of the greatest players ever. Did Shetlandle down the second

time? In 79 he beat Tony O'Shea, Tony O'Neill 79 average so he

improved, then he lost the second round match, a bit nervous, he got

beat by the great Alan Evan, 69-33 -- 69.33. So you are saying even the

great Eric Bristow had to start somewhere He had to start somewhere.

Were you nervous first time you played here? Like shaking Stevens I

was. What was your average? 91.20. Unbelievable. Let us look at the

order of play. First up as advertised Lakeside's

nearly man and the hugely popular Tony O'Shea against our treble

champion Martin Adams. Then Scott Mitchell who showed

motion after getting past the first round last year, will turn the air

pink as he takes on Paul Hogan. Then enter the favourite. Eight titles in

2013. Masters champion. Number Wynn one seed Stephen Bunting against Jim

Widmayer. Over the first three days we have

been jump here and skipping there, we have had eight preliminaries and

first round matches so it can get confusing. Let us catch up with

everything, because today, we will finish the first round and the

second round draw is taking shape. In the top half of the draw still a

few things to be decided today. But Wesley Harms won't lose his cool.

But it is a banana skin after Tony knocked out Darryl Fitton. The form

player has to be Robbie Green, he demolished Richie George though Gary

Robson finished well against Ron Meulenkamp. Again the the bottom

half some first round business still to be done, but Alan Norris will be

really fancying his chances after disposing of waits on Saturday,

while -- it is that either or of course at

the bottom that provides reel intrigue. It is Martin Adams versus

Tony O'Shea, they played against each other twice before at the

Lakeside, and last time in 2012, it was in the quarter-finals when

Wolfie was defending that third title. Tony is well wear of the

danger he still respects. -- represents.

The man has been there, done it all, he is three time world, three times

Master, he has done what we hope to do.

He is a great player, and he is a legend of the game. We still look up

to him. He is a mate as well an an opponent.

You have to put the friendships to one side and get on with the game in

hand. That is the way you have to do it.

There is probably a lot of pressure on Martin that weekend, and I

remember being aggressive. Is this the moment? Is this the moment?

Just because you have hit a 161 it won't stop him doing a big finish.

That is the one thing you remember about that match.

A lot people commented later on, said that he looked angry, he looked

focussed and that is the thing I am looking for again. My problem is I

am probably too friendly with everybody, and but if I get my

angry, he's in trouble. He gets great support from the crowd. I have

been getting great support, so it will be rocking in there without a

doubt. I think the atmosphere will be electric.

I think the stat that jumps out is 52 and 57 because they have been

here so many times. Adams had to get over his jitter, he has won three

titles, we are waiting on Tony's first, it is interesting hearing him

saying I am not going to be nice to everyone. He hasn't been nice to all

the guys he has beat to get to the final, he seems to run out in the

final. But he is a great player. He, he looks where he is throwing and he

throws where he is looking, he doesn't muck about on the oche. How

important is this over the shorter format. The best of five sets? Even

though you would favour O'Shea with the form Martin has been in, if he

gets off to a quick start there is not much to come back. You have to

jump on your opponent straight away. Even one set, the first set, it is

so important, if Martin gets to first set he will relax, if Tony

does, he will do the same, but if the opponent gets in front these

guys can play dart, we should see a good game. The crowd aried, they

tend to support both men so it will be quite an atmosphere, have you a

strong favourite? Do you think they are too wily to pick? I still, I

have to go for Tony, to be honest. Adams is getting back but he is not

at the form he was. Might be too early for him? We will wait and see.

first round tie. Of the elder statesmen of world dart, seven world

finals between them, but one won't be reaching the last 16. The

Stockport Silverback could be the first man to make it through to

three finals since Eric Bristow in the late 80s, early 90s who reached

the final of the world masters in the autumn too. Wolf fi back for a

21st consecutive year, he has only ever lost in the first round five

times. The wolf is a different beast this some encounter in prospect.

way, what a way to start. Certainly got the best of order for that.

Fantastic entrances from both players and absolute hush when they

are throwing. Wonderful atmosphere here at the Lakeside. Those with

Tuesday afternoon tickets couldn't believe their luck when they saw

what they might be witnessing, Martin making it through against

David Cameron. Wanted the terrific to go back to Canada but David

Cameron ending without what he wanted in the Cabinet. There is no

trophies in there for sure. 140 apiece, but Martin Adams is on a

finish of 157 after nine darts. Treble 20, treble 19 would do. 77

left. So double ten and Tony O'Shea already way behind. Double ten four

at 13. . What a start! -- for 13 darts. Another chance for Adams.

Straight into the treble. It could be significant. Martin has played a

preliminary round and Tony has not. Both of the guys who have played 11

Murray rounds so far had coming and had fast start so far. -- played

preliminary rounds. Settling very well so far. Tony is taking a little

bit of work -- times so far. Martin is going to town here.

That is 95 left. 13th consecutive appearance for Tony O'Shea. 20 four

bullseye. He needs to take this out. Martin coming back for double top.

Treble 16. He wants the double. Maybe it is too early. Martin with

the chance he would not have accepted. Game, shot and the second

leg to Martin Adams. He won the first seven lakes in the match

against David Cameron. He lost the third set. He still won very

comfortably. Decent check out statistics of 40% success rate in

that first round match. Martin Adams has picked up the pace quicker than

O'Shea. Getting the best of order and they deserve it, as well. This

is the hottest ticket in town. Just not going well for Tony O'Shea.

Those fans of his will not be very happy. But dear. Tony O'Shea still a

long way back. To darts, double top. Struggling to find his range at the

moment. He looks very nervous at the moment. Double ten and at a set

that. Martin had the darts in that first set. No significant damage

done for Tony O'Shea up to this point. An indication that perhaps he

is finding his feet now. He has been telling himself off. Come on, it get

in there. He is an old campaigner. That is better. It is delivered now.

Such a solid stamps from Martin Adams. -- solid stamps. A chance for

Tony O'Shea. He went for it but did not quite get it. But he will be

back. I wonder if there was a last-minute change of mind? Already

You should be concentrating on the match in hand. That is what he is

not doing. He has only ever been beaten in the first round were times
