Good afternoon and welcome to one of the most famous stages in the world.

:00:34.:00:42.

What happens here once a year has changed a lot from the days when

:00:43.:00:50.

darting diets to the modern era. In 2016 we will no doubt once again

:00:51.:00:54.

beat at least one new future star of the sport who will get his big break

:00:55.:00:58.

right here in the dream factory of darts. The crowd will be there

:00:59.:01:01.

alongside some very familiar faces. The famous and unknown are ready to

:01:02.:01:44.

go for the 2016 BDO world darts championship. Whether you are on top

:01:45.:01:50.

of a hill in London or in the leafy countryside of sorry it is a sport

:01:51.:01:55.

all about these people, the fans. No drink limit, no segregation, no

:01:56.:01:59.

problems. Looking down from the balcony is the Manu slots first

:02:00.:02:04.

dance. He's been around for so long that the National Trust have just

:02:05.:02:08.

named him a listed building, Bobby George. Thank you very much. Nine

:02:09.:02:13.

days with you is a pleasure for me. On one hand this is a comfortable

:02:14.:02:18.

pair of shoes, the BDO Lakeside World Championship, on the other

:02:19.:02:21.

side it is excitement because who is the next Jelle Klaasen or Dave

:02:22.:02:25.

Chisnall? This is where they make their starts, here. They do well

:02:26.:02:31.

here and then go on and on and on. 48 men in this tournament, it is

:02:32.:02:36.

very difficult to say who's going to win. On that note let's have a

:02:37.:02:39.

little look through the draw before we even get into today's action.

:02:40.:02:44.

Obvious names jump out, Glen Durrant is the number one seed, will we be

:02:45.:02:49.

seeing the current champion? You never know. Six tournaments, number

:02:50.:02:56.

one seed, the number one PDO player so he has obviously done very well

:02:57.:02:59.

last year. If you go right down to the bottom, I think Jamie Hughes

:03:00.:03:06.

against Rosamunde Comrie is too close to call.

:03:07.:03:13.

Montgomery is a really good player, serious, straight darts, no messing

:03:14.:03:20.

about. Interesting because up the road everyone was talking about

:03:21.:03:24.

Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson was just saying,

:03:25.:03:28.

ha-ha, this is brilliant, nobody is talking about me. Same thing here.

:03:29.:03:32.

Wait. He has been coming this year. You don't hear nothing about him,

:03:33.:03:39.

but obviously he has been playing good starts to qualify. Absolutely,

:03:40.:03:43.

that's one to keep an eye on. The bottom half of the draw is

:03:44.:03:47.

intriguing as well. A mixture of the unknown and those who have been here

:03:48.:03:51.

before and got their feet under the table. Martin Adams fresh from his

:03:52.:03:55.

first appearance in the grand slam of darts which was unbelievable.

:03:56.:03:57.

Scott Mitchell, the defending champion. We know it is difficult to

:03:58.:04:06.

retain it. What chances that Scotty Dog will be barking? If you are

:04:07.:04:12.

champion it is very difficult. Being champion, been a pop star, looking

:04:13.:04:17.

after what he's doing, he's getting money come he's smiling, shaking

:04:18.:04:20.

people's hands. He hasn't been playing enough. He has gone up a bit

:04:21.:04:27.

this year. But he hasn't played like he did last year. He has his work

:04:28.:04:33.

cut out. One game at times sweet Bobby. Here's what we've got coming

:04:34.:04:35.

up for this afternoon. Tony O'Shea could go if he's not

:04:36.:04:50.

careful, taking on the Welshman Jeff Williams. Then it's the women's

:04:51.:04:57.

champion Lisa Ashton armed with those ton plus checkouts at the

:04:58.:05:04.

ready to defend the title. After a qualifier it's party time with

:05:05.:05:07.

Darryl Fitton, hoping to leave an informed Dennis Harbour all at sea.

:05:08.:05:11.

Here's a warning for you, there will be puns. First up the silverback has

:05:12.:05:20.

got his work cut out today. Whether he is playing at the grand slam of

:05:21.:05:24.

the Lakeside he is the People's Champion, but who wants to be that?

:05:25.:05:28.

He wants a major trophy in the cabinet. Let's find out how he is

:05:29.:05:30.

feeling this year. Great to be back at the Lakeside,

:05:31.:05:39.

about 15 years for me now. I've played literally everywhere on the

:05:40.:05:43.

planet in darts. Australia, America. I've won a big tournament in

:05:44.:05:47.

America. And nothing is like the Lakeside. Even losing out the

:05:48.:05:52.

Lakeside is a pleasure, to be honest, sometimes. Just to go on

:05:53.:05:59.

that stage. Last 18 months have not been brilliant, dropped down the

:06:00.:06:04.

rankings quite a bit. But the last three or more months, everyone will

:06:05.:06:07.

tell you I have started playing well again. Got some wins under my belt

:06:08.:06:11.

and played well recently in Poland on television. I'm actually looking

:06:12.:06:16.

forward to this. It's been awhile since I've said that if I'm honest.

:06:17.:06:21.

That it's my job and you've got to get on with it. Probably does play

:06:22.:06:26.

on my mind, lost the last two tournaments. Last year I lost to

:06:27.:06:32.

Scotland he went on to be world champion. I was leading for

:06:33.:06:38.

virtually the whole match. Josh Wells, if I could have stuck that

:06:39.:06:41.

last art in, it could have been me. You never know. That's why I both

:06:42.:06:47.

love and hate darts, you just never know. He's had a great year. He's a

:06:48.:06:57.

young kid. Couldn't have got much of a tougher round than the one I've

:06:58.:07:00.

got to be honest. I'm looking forward to it. That's a bit

:07:01.:07:04.

different this year. I'm going to enjoy it. I might not have too many

:07:05.:07:10.

of these left in me so I'm going to enjoy every minute I can. Tony of

:07:11.:07:15.

course is such a familiar story. The less familiar face is Jim Williams

:07:16.:07:21.

and this is a coin toss. It is a really close game. People don't know

:07:22.:07:26.

Jim Williams. But he is World Cup singles champion. He represents

:07:27.:07:31.

Wales. Apparently he is a very, very good dart player. We know he is, he

:07:32.:07:38.

has been up three times. He cut the figure of a more modern dart player,

:07:39.:07:43.

look at that. Got a bit of bicep going on, bit of nip and tuck. No

:07:44.:07:50.

real sign of a beer belly. Well he's young, isn't he? He's got a while to

:07:51.:07:55.

grow a beer belly, it takes a while. Obviously he's got his work cut out

:07:56.:08:00.

but apparently he's very good. I'm looking forward to this game. What

:08:01.:08:06.

about Tony? Every year, the same situation, we know how popular he

:08:07.:08:10.

is. We try to disconnect ourselves from the emotional attachment we

:08:11.:08:13.

have to him. But once he goes further into the tournament we all

:08:14.:08:16.

start believing again and then get our hearts broken. Runner-up three

:08:17.:08:21.

times must hurt him. Three times he has been here. Could be his lucky

:08:22.:08:29.

year. On my radio show the other day you were picking the all-time

:08:30.:08:32.

greatest walk on music in darts and you picked his as the best and it's

:08:33.:08:36.

true because even when he's not playing basing his name at every

:08:37.:08:41.

event. Hey baby, love it. It's great walk on music. Are you dancing, are

:08:42.:08:46.

you ready? Let's get down to it. Ladies and gentlemen, on the half of

:08:47.:09:00.

the British Darts Organisation, welcome to the 2016 Lakeside World

:09:01.:09:06.

Championships. We are about to get the first round underway here at the

:09:07.:09:14.

home of world darts, the Lakeside. CHEERING

:09:15.:09:21.

We now understand to the stage the Turkish open champion, a Welsh

:09:22.:09:27.

international, he is the reigning World Cup singles champion, Jim

:09:28.:09:29.

Williams. We now introduce a former winner of

:09:30.:10:25.

12 world ranking titles, a former World Cup singles champion, he is

:10:26.:10:30.

three times a Lakeside World Championship finalist, silverback

:10:31.:10:32.

Tony O'Shea. # Hey, hey baby

:10:33.:10:58.

# I want to know if you'll be my girl

:10:59.:11:07.

# When I saw you walking down the street

:11:08.:11:10.

# I said that's the kind of girl I'd like to meet

:11:11.:11:13.

# She's so pretty # She's so fine

:11:14.:11:17.

# And can make her mine own mind # Hey, hey baby

:11:18.:11:30.

# I want to know if you'll be my girl

:11:31.:11:34.

# Everybody in the house! #. One-man may be more well-known than

:11:35.:11:40.

the other but there is the width of a dart between them on the stage.

:11:41.:11:47.

COMMENTATOR: Here we go then, Lakeside 2016 underway with one of

:11:48.:11:55.

the real favourites here, one of the fixtures, every year since 2002,

:11:56.:12:00.

Tony O'Shea. He has been standing on that stage. Only four players have

:12:01.:12:04.

made more appearances than the silverback. Today's opponent by

:12:05.:12:10.

contrast, Jim Williams, has only been here once before. And he didn't

:12:11.:12:15.

win a set as he lost in round one. Mind you, Williams is the seeds

:12:16.:12:20.

today, he won to ranking titles in 2015. Tony O'Shea nervously

:12:21.:12:25.

contemplating three first-round defeats. England against Wales.

:12:26.:12:33.

First set, first leg, it's Jim to throw first. And we are underway in

:12:34.:12:46.

2016. Tony O'Shea has held up pretty ropey old year. But I was speaking

:12:47.:12:54.

to him yesterday and he says that he is improving. Whether or not he will

:12:55.:12:58.

improve enough to give Williams a real run for his money, I don't

:12:59.:13:02.

know. There is not much to split them in the betting. Yes, Williams

:13:03.:13:10.

the mild favourite. But there's very little to compensate for the

:13:11.:13:17.

experience he brings to the stage. I mentioned those two first-round

:13:18.:13:21.

defeats in his last two visits. Last year he lost to the eventual

:13:22.:13:26.

champion Scott Mitchell in his second sudden leg defeat.

:13:27.:13:35.

First to three sets, through to the second round. First to three wins

:13:36.:13:47.

each set. If it does get to two sets all and 4p stats when we get to a

:13:48.:13:53.

sudden-death leg. One of the most likeable guys in the game, Tony

:13:54.:13:56.

O'Shea. One of the most popular around the country. Stockport's

:13:57.:14:01.

finest. And there is his wife giving her support, living every moment.

:14:02.:14:08.

Yeah, she loves her visits here. Plenty of people in fancy dress

:14:09.:14:24.

enjoying the atmosphere as ever. I think they did play darts at

:14:25.:14:31.

Downton. Treble 24 tops for the first leg of the match. 82 to take

:14:32.:14:42.

the opening leg against darts. Good effort. To hold his throw in the

:14:43.:14:59.

first leg of the match. Two 10s. And that will settle him down nicely. So

:15:00.:15:07.

much experience, Tony O'Shea, seven major TV finals he has reached over

:15:08.:15:11.

his long career, but he has not had a BDO title since back in 2014.

:15:12.:15:33.

He has reached three finals, he lost to Ted Hankey 7-6 in 2009. He

:15:34.:15:45.

reached the final again in 2012, Tony O'Shea, he lost to Christian

:15:46.:15:53.

Kist. And then the following year, a 7-1 defeat by Scott Waites in the

:15:54.:15:58.

final. So many people here would love to see Tony O'Shea left the

:15:59.:16:05.

world title. Most notably Hemed. His BDO ranking has slept he has gone

:16:06.:16:09.

down to 24 in the BDO world rankings. Tony would love to be able

:16:10.:16:15.

to produce a return to form here this week. -- most notably him. 180.

:16:16.:16:33.

That is handy. O'Shea can check this one out, in theory. Not now though.

:16:34.:16:39.

It would have been a nice riposte to the first maxim of Lakeside 2016.

:16:40.:16:50.

This, treble 19 and tops for a break of throw. He now cannot finish. He

:16:51.:16:57.

composes himself. 62, that is a great first dart. A slight

:16:58.:17:03.

adjustment along the oche. That is not a bad marker.

:17:04.:17:17.

And very nervous final dart. He knows where it is. Close with two.

:17:18.:17:24.

There we go. O'Shea, up and running. An interesting matchup. Form against

:17:25.:17:40.

experience. A sell-out crowd at the Lakeside. Living the moment. They

:17:41.:17:50.

are in party mood, as ever. They have been since 11 o'clock this

:17:51.:17:59.

morning axel nation Mark -- 11 o'clock this morning. All the new

:18:00.:18:05.

years resolutions get put back one week if you're coming to Lakeside.

:18:06.:18:10.

It depends on your resolution. It might be the reverse of what most

:18:11.:18:17.

people are anticipating. Go for a day in 2016. -- go for it. 140.

:18:18.:18:36.

Nothing between them so fire. Not in terms of scorers or legs. If O'Shea

:18:37.:18:50.

can jump all over this, 140 would seek him nicely. That is not bad. It

:18:51.:18:56.

has given him a big check out opportunity.

:18:57.:19:03.

Here we go. Another one of those. Tops for 160. The first two darts

:19:04.:19:18.

were beautiful. I cannot believe that he missed the double by some

:19:19.:19:23.

distance. He needs Shanghai but he cannot do it now. Yes, Shanghai,

:19:24.:19:29.

what they call it when they visit treble and a single and the double

:19:30.:19:42.

of the same number. Tony O'Shea were like that one. He was annoyed when

:19:43.:19:45.

he missed the double top opportunity. Now, crucially maybe, I

:19:46.:19:57.

break against the throw. Poised, one more leg required to take the

:19:58.:20:05.

opening set. Just 60 to take off. -- kick. You can be an old they

:20:06.:20:14.

formulate coming onto the Lakeside stage, but everybody says, there is

:20:15.:20:16.

something special about playing up there. Some people can do it, some

:20:17.:20:23.

people learn to do it, like Scott Mitchell last year, some people just

:20:24.:20:29.

cannot. Scott Mitchell, the defending champion, not in action

:20:30.:20:35.

today. A lovely opening dart from O'Shea. He has had a nine darkter on

:20:36.:20:45.

television, Tony, in 2007 against Lewis. -- darter. The perfect leg of

:20:46.:21:03.

darts. Nine darts. It has not been done here for a while. That was the

:21:04.:21:12.

wife of Jim Williams, Natalie, watching on. She is hoping that her

:21:13.:21:16.

husband might become the fourth world champion. That was a good

:21:17.:21:28.

visit. A very steady leg from Jim Williams. O'Shea can put this away

:21:29.:21:47.

now. 91, going the bull rate. By fractions. Williams can make him

:21:48.:21:51.

pay. He must make him pay. He must take double 12. With that dart, of

:21:52.:22:01.

course, the advantage switches to Williams. He has the dart in what

:22:02.:22:07.

would be the deciding leg in the opening set.

:22:08.:22:16.

Another steady ton to kick I saw from Jim Williams. When he is

:22:17.:22:27.

missing, it is not missing by much. Some good fancy dress you today.

:22:28.:22:42.

52,000 quid is the prize for checking out in nine darts. We were

:22:43.:22:53.

wondering, because it is not as usual, in the programme. We thought

:22:54.:23:01.

it was not going to happen, but it will, it will be paid, the 50 grand,

:23:02.:23:10.

52 grand if it happens. O'Shea is effectively taking the dart make. If

:23:11.:23:15.

that had been a treble 19, he would have been nicely set. O'Shea, 200

:23:16.:23:23.

required anti-effectively has six darts from here. -- and he

:23:24.:23:37.

effectively. He needs a treble. He was throwing that one from square

:23:38.:23:46.

leg. These are good darts. Outstanding from Williams. It puts

:23:47.:23:52.

O'Shea under pressure. Williams and a strong position. No check out for

:23:53.:24:00.

O'Shea on this occasion. That was a loose one. And nice cover shot. Here

:24:01.:24:06.

we go, for his first ever set on that stage. He lost 3-0 two years

:24:07.:24:20.

ago on his debut. Second set, first leg, Tony to throw first. Few signs

:24:21.:24:30.

of nerves they are. I think Tony will feel that is one that got away.

:24:31.:24:33.

He has got to put it behind him. Jim Williams seeded 12 in this

:24:34.:24:57.

competition. That is by virtue of his two ranking tournament victories

:24:58.:25:00.

this year, the Turkish open and the Antwerp open. He beat the Welsh

:25:01.:25:06.

captain in the final of that Turkish open. He has brought plenty of

:25:07.:25:16.

friends from Presteigne Powys, where he lives.

:25:17.:25:26.

Tony O'Shea, a massive Stockport County fun. There is Jane, Jim's

:25:27.:25:34.

mum. So far, so good. 64 for the opening leg of this

:25:35.:25:48.

second set. That is one way of doing it. A little raise of the eyebrow.

:25:49.:26:01.

He will be back. He is trying to read himself up, Tony O'Shea. He was

:26:02.:26:09.

unfortunate with that double eight. This is a big one. He has already

:26:10.:26:18.

missed ten darts and the double, Tony O'Shea.

:26:19.:26:29.

Double ten for O'Shea. There you go. He had only got two out of 12 prior

:26:30.:26:38.

to that. That will settle him down. His wife looks like she is suffering

:26:39.:26:43.

serious stress watching this. That is unlucky. That is 60 points on the

:26:44.:26:50.

floor he is picking up. Back came in and out of the treble 20. It was a

:26:51.:26:57.

bounce out. O'Shea yet to hit the maximum. He

:26:58.:27:16.

has only had one visit of 140 or more. That is his 15th ton.

:27:17.:27:48.

Warners ever here today, the Lakeside arena. -- warm as ever. At

:27:49.:28:00.

capacity crowd, at complete sell-out on this opening day. He has six

:28:01.:28:10.

darts for that. O'Shea is back on 182. Double tend to level the set.

:28:11.:28:17.

It moved the wire. He will have three more darts when he returns.

:28:18.:28:21.

O'Shea will hold for a 140 ton. You can see Tony O'Shea struggling

:28:22.:28:37.

with the temperature. Williams applies The Heat to go back on level

:28:38.:28:39.

terms. Some of the other players watching

:28:40.:28:55.

on, there is Wesley Harms, seeded number five this year.

:28:56.:29:04.

They call him Sparky, a former electrician from the Netherlands. He

:29:05.:29:12.

is becoming a fixture here. And certainly somebody with a chance.

:29:13.:29:22.

Stephen Bunting is around, the 2014 champion, and the 2006 champion,

:29:23.:29:28.

Jelle Klaasen, he paid a visit here after his victory to go into the

:29:29.:29:37.

semifinals of the PDC Championship. Yes, those semifinals happening

:29:38.:29:46.

today. A few miles east of here. This is round one of the BDO, the

:29:47.:29:50.

first to three sets into the second round. Will it be this man, Tony

:29:51.:29:59.

O'Shea, a veteran of 14 previous Lakeside World Championships, or

:30:00.:30:02.

will it be Jim Williams, the seeded player? He is only playing his

:30:03.:30:06.

second match. O Shea is frustrated with his own

:30:07.:30:19.

darts at the moment, he is not quite firing. Inconsistent, isn't it? 61

:30:20.:30:26.

when he comes back would get that 2-1 advantage. All Williams could

:30:27.:30:30.

hope for is to get a decent score to apply a bit of pressure on that 61,

:30:31.:30:36.

and he can't do it. Tony O'Shea nicely poised to regain the

:30:37.:30:37.

advantage. Well there is the treble 20, so 18

:30:38.:30:58.

will leave tops. Good checkout, around 40, 50% mark, both these

:30:59.:31:07.

lads. That improves O'Shea's percentage, four out of 15 now.

:31:08.:31:16.

Anything over 50% they would bite your hand off for, but anything

:31:17.:31:23.

under 30 they are disappointed, and both players, currently their

:31:24.:31:31.

checkout percentage is under 30. A little growl of frustration from

:31:32.:31:35.

O'Shea as he took his darts out of the board. The Silverback in him

:31:36.:31:48.

talking. That's more like it. Hello. There it is. His first 180 of the

:31:49.:31:53.

tournament. Putting him in a very handy position. Nice reply. Nice

:31:54.:32:03.

cover on the 19th rural Mac from Jim Williams. Not on a finish, though --

:32:04.:32:17.

nice cover on the 19s. Back into the 19s, unerringly. Nicely poised.

:32:18.:32:33.

O'Shea could do with another one. Double 16 he needs. 88, just above.

:32:34.:32:44.

Yes. Once again we are going to a deciding leg. All going with the

:32:45.:32:50.

throw. O'Shea under pressure, now. Can't afford to lose another set.

:32:51.:32:55.

First to three sets. If he were to lose this lake then the spectre of a

:32:56.:33:00.

potential first-round defeat would become only two real.

:33:01.:33:08.

After reaching the final in 2013, Tony O'Shea lost in round one to

:33:09.:33:16.

Martin Adams 3-0, lost in a sudden-death leg to Scott Mitchell

:33:17.:33:20.

in the first round last year. Desperate not to make it a hat-trick

:33:21.:33:25.

of first-round defeats. But he must, you feel, win this lake. -- win this

:33:26.:33:33.

leg if he is to have a chance. Could do with a big score, here. And

:33:34.:34:07.

it's just 60. A lot of the players taking the opportunity to check out

:34:08.:34:11.

the atmosphere. They've all had a go on stage this morning to see how it

:34:12.:34:13.

looks. Was Lee Holmes, This is for the set, for a two set

:34:14.:34:32.

lead. It can't be done. But here he is applying massive pressure to Tony

:34:33.:34:40.

O'Shea. 142 to stay alive in this set, then. And he can't do it, now.

:34:41.:34:45.

And he will just have to hope that Williams' nerve cracks. And he's

:34:46.:34:52.

looked pretty handy in that respect. Double 16. Double eight. And he's

:34:53.:35:01.

got it, too sets ahead. And now O'Shea really has his sizeable back

:35:02.:35:11.

against the world -- against the wall. Williams with the two set

:35:12.:35:16.

lead. Williams with the advantage of throwing first in this third set.

:35:17.:35:28.

Here is a O'Shea staring at another first-round defeat. Two in the last

:35:29.:35:40.

two years, six in total for him. But he has also reached three finals. A

:35:41.:35:47.

look of desperation on his face. Struggled, I think, with conditions

:35:48.:35:49.

today, the warm up there on the stage. That's a solid 140.

:35:50.:36:01.

Checkout percentages, Williams UC has just got a marginal advantage.

:36:02.:36:09.

But he's got it when he's needed it, and that's given him the two set

:36:10.:36:13.

advantage. Both of those sets Williams won went

:36:14.:36:25.

to a deciding leg. And on these occasions did Tony O'Shea throw a

:36:26.:36:29.

dart for the set. Good dart, and again. Now he thinks. That's a

:36:30.:36:42.

sensible route. Still thinking. Treble 18 for double 18. This would

:36:43.:36:51.

be something. Close, very close. Now tops for O'Shea to take this leg

:36:52.:36:59.

against the throw. So important to O'Shea's chances of extricating

:37:00.:37:02.

himself from a very, very difficult position.

:37:03.:37:15.

If he can get on a little role then you just never know. Great cover

:37:16.:37:26.

shots from Williams, switching to the 19s. He's been like a metronome

:37:27.:37:34.

down there, hasn't he? Last five darts at treble 19 have all found

:37:35.:37:42.

green bit. Williams has effectively taken the throw by virtue of the

:37:43.:37:46.

previous visit, and he has not really capitalised, there.

:37:47.:37:58.

Bit of Downton Abbey, or a gorilla. Bit warm in that suit. He's got to

:37:59.:38:14.

be cheering for the Silverback, hasn't he? He's found a little bit

:38:15.:38:21.

of something better here, Tony O'Shea. The 120 checkout is very

:38:22.:38:26.

makeable. Well, 166 is not a finish. 170 is

:38:27.:38:48.

the biggest one and then there are a couple of bogey numbers you cannot

:38:49.:38:52.

take out in three darts. So 64 for O'Shea to go to a head. Great first

:38:53.:39:02.

start, leaving double eight. That should be handy. Oh, unlucky.

:39:03.:39:10.

Unlucky. Well, I ball 16, and this would hurt. -- double 16. O'Shea

:39:11.:39:21.

breathes again. Double four, got to take this. That should be a good

:39:22.:39:26.

marker. Too much of an adjustment. And tracks down the double two, and

:39:27.:39:34.

he cannot believe it. To level the set. Right in the middle of the bed.

:39:35.:39:39.

That's a big, big leg slipped away from O'Shea, he should have taken

:39:40.:39:51.

that. Straight back in the treble 20, Jim Williams has got a bit of

:39:52.:39:56.

swagger about him now. Deciding to go for the treble 19 with the third

:39:57.:40:00.

dart because of the lie of the first two. Darts aficionados know that, of

:40:01.:40:07.

course, they know about the cover shot, the switch down below, that's

:40:08.:40:08.

why they do it. He's always here, Jackie, over from

:40:09.:40:29.

Belgium. Great darts supporter. There are people who make this

:40:30.:40:33.

pilgrimage year after year and he's one of them.

:40:34.:40:46.

You were talking about bogey numbers and Williams is on one of them, no

:40:47.:40:56.

checkout on 165. But he will be back to look at 124, with Tony O'Shea

:40:57.:41:02.

back on 266, he needs a big score. He is getting one so far. Unlucky.

:41:03.:41:11.

So close to being a 180. Treble 18 would leave him bull's-eye.

:41:12.:41:16.

Bull's-eye for a 2-1 lead in this third set. Would have left him a leg

:41:17.:41:26.

away. 146 is big. And can't be done. Can't now be taken out. So Williams

:41:27.:41:30.

with a big opportunity to move to the brink of victory. Double eight.

:41:31.:41:42.

And takes it out. Only one more leg required. And he'll have a 3-0

:41:43.:41:48.

victory and a place in the second round. Quoted the 11-8 on favourite

:41:49.:41:54.

before this match began, Jim Williams.

:41:55.:42:05.

Almost a pick 'em match as far as the bookies were concerned but he

:42:06.:42:11.

has been solid. Straight back in the treble 20. Perhaps the scoreboard is

:42:12.:42:16.

freeing up his arm a little. He needs it to. If he doesn't hold onto

:42:17.:42:29.

his throw here, O'Shea, it's good night and thank you. Start the taxi.

:42:30.:42:33.

Whatever euphemism you care to use. Back in Stockport by tea-time. Think

:42:34.:42:40.

he'll be around for a little while yet. He likes to sample the

:42:41.:42:44.

atmosphere and get behind the microphone. He's actually remarkably

:42:45.:42:52.

good at it. He's got six darts from here because Williams is on no

:42:53.:42:59.

checkout. He would have hoped for more than that but 76 is makeable.

:43:00.:43:10.

Anxious times for Jill. OK, then, Tony. 25 fourball. Oh, he's hit the

:43:11.:43:16.

bull's-eye. Williams 141 for the match. Can't be

:43:17.:43:20.

done. So, double eight to stay alive. Jill

:43:21.:43:50.

enjoyed that. But Williams with the darts. That's a nice solid start. If

:43:51.:43:58.

he hits the times it's going to put O'Shea under big pressure to be

:43:59.:43:59.

getting huge numbers. Another set goes the distance. Will

:44:00.:44:17.

it go the same way as the first two? Will it go to Wales? Or can Tony

:44:18.:44:22.

O'Shea find something? Need to find the treble 20. The winner of this

:44:23.:44:28.

could potentially be heading towards a second round match against the

:44:29.:44:32.

Dutchman who we saw keeping an eye on form.

:44:33.:44:41.

Looking as though it's going to go the way of the Welshman at the

:44:42.:44:44.

moment. Good shooting. But so is this.

:44:45.:45:01.

That's one out of the bed. That was a bounce out. How unlucky is that?

:45:02.:45:10.

140 when he comes back. O'Shea, Wellcome he's looking at a very

:45:11.:45:13.

small target, trying to adjust to get the shred Paul 18.

:45:14.:45:22.

Match point again, another treble 20 four double ten for the match. What

:45:23.:45:34.

a way to do it. He has knocked out Tony O'Shea, one of Lakeside's true

:45:35.:45:40.

gentleman. A gracious loser, as you can see. Jim Williams, in only his

:45:41.:45:50.

second visit, he has produced the big performance that he knew he was

:45:51.:45:57.

capable of. Williams is through. Ladies and gentlemen, we say goodbye

:45:58.:46:02.

to Silverback, Tony O'Shea. Through to the next round, it is Jim

:46:03.:46:04.

Williams. He came into music by Queens of the

:46:05.:46:38.

Stone Age. Jim Williams wins, proving again that Lakeside is as

:46:39.:46:42.

predictable as your dress sense. We knew he was in with a big chance,

:46:43.:46:46.

but he still had to go and do it on the Lakeside stage. Brilliant stuff.

:46:47.:46:55.

Obviously he is pleased about that. Tony O'Shea did not score very well.

:46:56.:47:02.

The best darts see-through where the last three. He did not have to do a

:47:03.:47:09.

massive amount. When he needed to hit the doubles-mac, he did it. They

:47:10.:47:16.

seem to be struggling, high above the treble. Then roll. I do not know

:47:17.:47:21.

if it is nervous. I was disappointed. I thought it would be

:47:22.:47:29.

a higher standard. Lucky we have got a lot more games to come. Good for

:47:30.:47:35.

Jim to do it in front of a national audience. His nerves would have been

:47:36.:47:42.

all over the place. He will obviously be nervous, but he should

:47:43.:47:46.

not be that nervous. He has played for his country in the World Cup.

:47:47.:47:51.

Let's find out from the man himself. Come on, let's get you in here.

:47:52.:47:55.

Plenty of time to talk to the adoring masses. We said it was a

:47:56.:48:01.

coin toss before you went up, but this was you in front of a national

:48:02.:48:07.

audience on the BBC. How were they nervous when your work on music

:48:08.:48:13.

played. The first time I played, it was really tough. I did not feel

:48:14.:48:18.

nervous that time. I was not playing that well, what I thought, keep

:48:19.:48:26.

going. What was it like to win your first set? It must have been in your

:48:27.:48:34.

head, get off to a good start? I do not know. If I had missed that, I

:48:35.:48:39.

would have found it really tough. Even more so in the second set. We

:48:40.:48:44.

were saying, leave the amateurs aside for a second, you have got the

:48:45.:48:50.

clutch darts. If you missed this, it could have been 1-1. You must be

:48:51.:48:56.

happy? When the first two sets were like that, it was so tight. I found

:48:57.:49:00.

it really edgy and I scraped through. Obviously when you get the

:49:01.:49:06.

ton class finish, you will want to be watching that back a few hundred

:49:07.:49:12.

times today. This is lovely. What a way to do it. Treble 20, leaves you

:49:13.:49:20.

80. You know you have got one. How was that. I went on honeymoon with

:49:21.:49:28.

Natalie and we came back before Christmas. I have been playing

:49:29.:49:34.

rubbish, really rubbish. I played yesterday with Dean and my friend

:49:35.:49:40.

came up. Since then, I have felt better, so it has helped a lot.

:49:41.:49:44.

Bobby, aid means everything to get up there and win your first game

:49:45.:49:49.

like he did today? Your first victory, it is a lovely feeling. You

:49:50.:49:54.

can improve, obviously, you will have to to carry on, but if you keep

:49:55.:50:03.

going, you can win. Jim, what did Tony say to you at the end because

:50:04.:50:06.

we know he is one of the nicest guys in the sport? He is a gentleman. He

:50:07.:50:13.

is my hero. He wished me the best of luck. Fair play to him. He is a top

:50:14.:50:21.

man. I am sure we will steal him for the commentary box. Now talking with

:50:22.:50:26.

Rob. INAUDIBLE

:50:27.:50:35.

Tony, desperately disappointing. You said that form had been coming in

:50:36.:50:40.

the last couple of months. Probably the last performance, in the big

:50:41.:50:43.

shows that we do, I have beaten them all, Van Gerwen. That is the

:50:44.:50:50.

pressure of the Lakeside. The stage is like nowhere else. All the rules

:50:51.:50:55.

change. It is tough. Jim just said that you his heel. He said you're

:50:56.:51:02.

top man. I know you have heard it all before, but you have been such

:51:03.:51:05.

an ambassador for this sport. You are not finished yet? Trust me, I am

:51:06.:51:12.

not finished. I changed my darts about four months ago, slightly

:51:13.:51:17.

heavier. That is maybe affected the performance. What he's saying, that

:51:18.:51:23.

is the BDO. We are all pals. Maybe they will need to get a quick course

:51:24.:51:28.

of, I do not know what the word is, get some killer instinct. Maybe I

:51:29.:51:33.

need to change something and stop being so friendly with everybody.

:51:34.:51:38.

Maybe a change on the oche, but do not change in the bar, because

:51:39.:51:43.

you're a top man to have around. We are sorry you will not be in the

:51:44.:51:46.

second round. There are so many players coming through. That guy did

:51:47.:51:52.

not win a leg last year. He was distraught, but he has won some big

:51:53.:51:58.

tournaments. There is the proof. Our system is alive and kicking, and it

:51:59.:52:01.

is the proof. Colin, what a nice guy this is.

:52:02.:52:08.

Only on camera, off-camera he is terrible. The B word he was

:52:09.:52:24.

referring to was bats-mac. -- bats. His point, this is about the

:52:25.:52:28.

familiar faces and the relatively unknown. Expect anything to happen.

:52:29.:52:35.

You never know. It was a scrappy game, but this boy can go on. You

:52:36.:52:44.

make the stars here. Every darts player in the world, they came here

:52:45.:52:48.

and got up the ladder. You cannot say who is going to win, you do not

:52:49.:52:54.

know. They get up there and their darts go funny. They get nervous. We

:52:55.:53:00.

have another qualifier, but came to a attention to the ladies' draw. The

:53:01.:53:08.

best female players in the world. The brilliantly stashed in his

:53:09.:53:12.

honour hat-trick. If you were not with us 12 months ago, here is how

:53:13.:53:19.

she won 12 months ago. She is the reigning Lakeside world champion,

:53:20.:53:27.

the Lancashire rose, Lisa Ashton. Playing in her first Lakeside World

:53:28.:53:35.

Championship, it is her opponent. It is one of those intriguing contests,

:53:36.:53:42.

youth against experience. Double eight now. She had the chance. Just

:53:43.:53:52.

take your time. Double ten. It is they are. Treble 15, four double 18.

:53:53.:54:06.

Double 18 for the set, for Fallon. Yes. Double eight. Yes. The world

:54:07.:54:26.

arts champion, Lisa Ashton. -- darts. Can you hear me? There we go.

:54:27.:54:35.

Let's have a look at the ladies' draw at Frimley Green. Trina

:54:36.:54:40.

Gulliver, the golden girl, she takes on Dee Bateman. Lisa Ashton up in

:54:41.:54:50.

just a second. Anastasia Dobromyslova will be a threat. Casey

:54:51.:54:56.

Gallagher Jon Sopel as well. Lots of new blood coming through. Let's hear

:54:57.:55:03.

from Lisa Ashton before she takes to the Lakeside stage. She was speaking

:55:04.:55:08.

to Rob Walker. Here you are as defending champion

:55:09.:55:12.

again. Life must have changed a great deal at the first title, but

:55:13.:55:17.

what about last year? I have been really busy, lots of support, people

:55:18.:55:22.

coming to me, it has been brilliant. Do you feel less pressure or is the

:55:23.:55:25.

potential for a hat-trick increasing the tension? I have never really

:55:26.:55:32.

thought about it. I do not want to put myself under pressure, and start

:55:33.:55:35.

from scratch, and hopefully I can do the hat-trick. Paula Jacklin in the

:55:36.:55:41.

opening round. If you start as well as you did against Deta Hedman last

:55:42.:55:50.

year, you will be doing well. Is there the confidence to your game at

:55:51.:55:54.

the moment? Yes, I have been playing well. Hopefully I can carry on from

:55:55.:56:00.

where I left off last year. Not only have you been busy, but your two

:56:01.:56:04.

daughters have been busy, Danielle winning the world masters youth

:56:05.:56:08.

title, and Lindsay providing you with a granddaughter. I could not

:56:09.:56:13.

ask for an better Christmas present. She is beautiful. Did you have time

:56:14.:56:18.

off over Christmas to spend with the extended family? Yes, I took time

:56:19.:56:24.

off with the granddaughter and the rest of my family. After Christmas I

:56:25.:56:29.

got onto it for the Lakeside. What would it mean to you, you have

:56:30.:56:34.

claimed this mountain twice, to great acclaim in two wonderful and

:56:35.:56:40.

great sets of memories, but how special a third be? It would be

:56:41.:56:46.

brilliant, a dream come true. Only two other women have done the

:56:47.:56:50.

hat-trick. I would love to be in there with a hat-trick on my resume.

:56:51.:56:57.

Good luck. Thank you. Lisa Ashton has said the women pass my game

:56:58.:57:02.

alight. It has expanded, 16 aims at this stage of the tournament. She

:57:03.:57:07.

has brought competition. Trina does not have it easy, beta does not have

:57:08.:57:12.

it easy. Anastasia does not have it easy. She has been wonderful, the

:57:13.:57:22.

best lady's -- the Basque -- the best lady darts player I have seen.

:57:23.:57:28.

I like watching her. She can throw darts. There is no messing about.

:57:29.:57:34.

She gets on with the game. Last year? Final was marvellous. They are

:57:35.:57:41.

real darting family. For the last six years, I have always had a

:57:42.:57:46.

little tournament against her kid, who was this high. She has sprouted

:57:47.:57:49.

up and she is now the world youth champion, Danielle. It is a lovely

:57:50.:57:56.

story. I could not beat her when she was 11, I cannot beat her now. The

:57:57.:58:02.

practice together. They are family. She takes the kids with her when she

:58:03.:58:11.

can. Every tournament, she is on it. Paula Jacklin is maybe where Lisa

:58:12.:58:16.

was a few years ago, waiting to make that the breakthrough. She has her

:58:17.:58:20.

days in the sun, just not enough of them. She travels a lot but she does

:58:21.:58:28.

not win the tournaments. She goes to the quarterfinals, semifinals, sore

:58:29.:58:32.

points add up, but she has not won a big major. I have not seen her play

:58:33.:58:40.

on that stage very well. There is only one women's world title to win

:58:41.:58:45.

and it is rake that the Lakeside. Getting Lisa Ashton and Paula

:58:46.:58:54.

Jacklin on to that stage is Richard Ashdown. Now to get things started

:58:55.:58:58.

in the ladies World Championship at the home of darts, the Lakeside. We

:58:59.:59:05.

now introduced to the stage, our number one seed Andy Calder of 19

:59:06.:59:12.

world ranking titles. The reigning BDO and World Cup singles champion,

:59:13.:59:19.

the twice reigning Lakeside world champion, the Lancashire Rose, Lisa

:59:20.:59:20.

Ashton. MUSIC: "On a Mission" by Gabriella

:59:21.:59:40.

Cilmi. We now welcome to the stage a former

:59:41.:00:24.

Northern Ireland open champion, the Lincolnshire ladies County captain,

:00:25.:00:26.

Paula Jacklin! Will Lisa Ashton be three times a

:00:27.:01:43.

ladies champion? Paula Jacklin the first to stand in her wake, the

:01:44.:01:47.

pride of Lincolnshire. Let's go to the commentary box.

:01:48.:01:56.

Lisa Ashton the overwhelming favourite coming into this match,

:01:57.:02:01.

twice the world champion, hoping to make it a hat-trick this year. Paula

:02:02.:02:10.

Jacklin, today's opponent, 58, from Gainsborough. She has been here

:02:11.:02:15.

before, lost in the first round last year without winning a set. What has

:02:16.:02:19.

she got up her sleeve this afternoon? If you are new to darts,

:02:20.:02:26.

when this woman, the world champion, steps onto the key, you can expect

:02:27.:02:33.

fireworks. We have seen her win finals from two sets down, from six

:02:34.:02:39.

match darts down, 90 plus averages, massive checkouts, 156 last year. We

:02:40.:02:47.

have seen it all on fast forward. She is one of the quickest players

:02:48.:02:52.

around. It is England against England in the first match of the

:02:53.:02:58.

women's World Championship 2016. The best-of-3 sets. The first leg,

:02:59.:03:06.

Paula to throw first, came on! Paula Jacklin on the way. She sees

:03:07.:03:14.

the world through rose tinted spectacles! She gets us under way.

:03:15.:03:23.

She has the advantage of throwing first in the first leg. The first to

:03:24.:03:30.

three legs win the set. The best out of three sets win the match and wins

:03:31.:03:39.

a place in the quarterfinals. She has a lot to content with.

:03:40.:03:47.

The first two sets. This will be very quick. It is always quick when

:03:48.:04:00.

Lisa Ashton is on the oche, she does not hang around. She is

:04:01.:04:05.

unbelievable, she should be playing in the men's to be honest.

:04:06.:04:15.

A decent start from Paula. You could tell from her walk on she was not

:04:16.:04:25.

nervous, she is not fazed by playing on that stage. She lost to Aileen de

:04:26.:04:30.

Graaf last year, 2-0. Knocking on the door of a major

:04:31.:04:45.

final for most of last year, Paula. She came close on many occasions.

:04:46.:04:53.

She plays her county darts for Lincolnshire. Yes, Lancashire

:04:54.:04:59.

against Lincolnshire on the oche. It is Lisa who is on to a finish

:05:00.:05:18.

first. You would not put this past her, even in the first leg.

:05:19.:05:29.

These are the shots she will have to take out if she wants to stay in

:05:30.:05:32.

this match. That is way off. Pity our cameraman

:05:33.:06:00.

when Lisa Ashton is on the oche. She is so quick. She is first in. She

:06:01.:06:14.

was aiming for the 20 and she hit the treble. That is the one.

:06:15.:06:27.

Her two daughters also play Lancashire darts.

:06:28.:06:35.

It is a family affair. Danielle is the world youth champion.

:06:36.:06:49.

There she is. What a great prospect she is. The youth champion.

:06:50.:07:04.

I had some great days with Lancashire, I played with them for

:07:05.:07:08.

seven or eight years. We had a great team.

:07:09.:07:25.

Louise Peters watching on. She is in action later. With a nice smile.

:07:26.:07:33.

This is good. That is OK, it keeps her in it.

:07:34.:07:41.

Perfect. Very nice last dart. A couple of

:07:42.:08:14.

listeners. Paula has left 175. It is not an out shop. 170 is the biggest

:08:15.:08:23.

that you can take out in three darts, to trouble 20s and a

:08:24.:08:25.

bull's-eye. Bring on the men. The match is only

:08:26.:08:56.

two legs all, already a three digit checkout. -- two legs old. A nice

:08:57.:09:00.

start from Paula. In one match last year Lisa Ashton

:09:01.:09:38.

averaged 90 plus. There is nothing to separate them, it is just that

:09:39.:09:43.

Lisa is there getting a chance at the finish and taking it. The power

:09:44.:09:51.

of her scoring. Paula has not had a chance at a double your. But we are

:09:52.:09:54.

only two legs into the match. Some great players, those Lancashire

:09:55.:10:05.

men and women. Billy Leonard. He was a great player. But let's get

:10:06.:10:31.

back to the Sauber. -- oche. This is for the set. She needed the

:10:32.:10:55.

trouble to start, so Paula has a chance.

:10:56.:11:33.

For the first time, how are those doubles, Paula?

:11:34.:11:47.

Come on, Paula. A lot of people watching, a full house. Yes!

:11:48.:12:05.

In Mexico way! We will be seeing all of the fancy dress this week. Some

:12:06.:12:47.

brilliant turnouts. Her second score of 140 plus, Lisa.

:12:48.:13:05.

It is comeback time. That is her second score of 140

:13:06.:13:22.

plus, Paula. This is a decent match. She is still favourite to take the

:13:23.:13:34.

leg. There it is, one time, two 140s. Lucky.

:13:35.:13:49.

Averaging 85 in the set, hitting 50% of her doubles. She has come back on

:13:50.:14:13.

form, the defending champion. Paula has two step it up, look for

:14:14.:14:22.

the red part. They are enjoying themselves

:14:23.:14:38.

already. This is the first day of action. Yes, day one of Lakeside

:14:39.:14:49.

2016, match one in the women's World Championship. Have you got the buzz

:14:50.:15:00.

yet? I get it when I pull into the car park. And now I think everybody

:15:01.:15:05.

else has got it! Just to remind you, this is the

:15:06.:15:28.

women, not the man. There it is. A good marker, yes. Unlucky. It

:15:29.:15:30.

happens. She has thrown 12 darts, Lisa, she

:15:31.:15:46.

wants a when she comes to the oche. Make that a living because one of

:15:47.:15:55.

them fell out of the board. -- make that 11. That would have left double

:15:56.:16:07.

18. She is allowed to ask the referee. She will be back for double

:16:08.:16:16.

16. Paula is back on 276. She needs to rediscover her four kids after

:16:17.:16:27.

losing that first set. Two 16s. Yes. No problem for the defending

:16:28.:16:31.

champion. The second leg, Paula to throw first. Yes, set after said.

:16:32.:16:45.

She missed her first two doubles. She has only missed bulls eye since,

:16:46.:16:51.

and that was not by much. Metronomic. Here she goes again,

:16:52.:17:02.

here she goes again. They are all over the place. The 180 is coming up

:17:03.:17:07.

and it is the women that are showing them up. There is a great buzz

:17:08.:17:16.

around the arena when any leg of darts is started with a maximum. It

:17:17.:17:22.

means the nine darter is on. Not any more. Come on, Paula. Everybody

:17:23.:17:30.

wants you to steam it up. Not too bad, but Lisa on 261. She

:17:31.:17:51.

has effectively make a dart. It would have been 17s. She has made

:17:52.:18:01.

the advantage of scoring first, so Paula needs a big score. The first

:18:02.:18:07.

to two sets goes through to the quarterfinals. Not enough. Enjoying

:18:08.:18:12.

themselves. It is a finish, 144. Paula is still

:18:13.:18:19.

on 234. 179 is not a finish. Six darts, is

:18:20.:18:44.

she needs them. She will need them. That was a loose dart from Lisa, the

:18:45.:18:53.

world champion. 179, it is 66 for Lisa.

:18:54.:18:59.

She has left double 12. It is still the same side. And it is they are. I

:19:00.:19:21.

trip around the board, but it is in the double. Astonishing finishing

:19:22.:19:34.

from Lisa Ashton. She missed two darts in the first leg of the match

:19:35.:19:37.

and since then, she has said everything bar one shot at

:19:38.:19:40.

bull's-eye in the third leg to win it 3-0. I thought you were going to

:19:41.:19:51.

say everything but the kitchen door. It has been magic, it really has. I

:19:52.:19:57.

am sure everybody at home watching this will be so excited. Averaging

:19:58.:20:03.

85 with the checkout percentage of 63. This is in round one. You have

:20:04.:20:10.

got to feel for Paula. She has done nothing wrong. She has not had a

:20:11.:20:12.

look in. I think Lisa might have to go into

:20:13.:20:38.

demand's teams next year. -- into the men's teams. It is still panto

:20:39.:20:45.

season, just about. They have got high heels on as well, I can see.

:20:46.:20:54.

Lisa, they are behind you. My lord. Imagine sitting opposite him on The

:20:55.:20:57.

Train here. He would not get on it. Well, flamingos only stand on one

:20:58.:21:25.

leg. Lisa Ashton is only one leg away from winning this match. She

:21:26.:21:35.

has six darts, from 188, should she require them. That is a great start.

:21:36.:21:52.

Now I route shot for Paula. -- no out shot. Take it away. Will those

:21:53.:22:05.

be the last darts that Paula Jacklin throws at Lakeside 2016? Great

:22:06.:22:11.

scoring from the world champion, great finishing for the world --

:22:12.:22:15.

from the world champion. Speed of thought for Paula Jacklin, she did

:22:16.:22:20.

nothing wrong. Lisa Ashton is through to the quarterfinals and

:22:21.:22:24.

makes a bit of a statement. Fantastic. Come on, as she leaves

:22:25.:22:32.

the stage, Paula Jacklin. Through to the quarterfinals, the defending

:22:33.:22:37.

champion, Lisa Ashton. CHEERING

:22:38.:22:46.

Paula Jacklin is a wonderful character, a credit to the women's

:22:47.:22:55.

game, but Lisa Ashton on a hat-trick. Any player watching that

:22:56.:22:59.

backstage, as the commentator said, heard that message loud and clear.

:23:00.:23:04.

The lady is not for budging. She wants a third. She might just get

:23:05.:23:13.

it. Bobby George, you can take good averages, I think she was about 85,

:23:14.:23:18.

but she is doing what won her the title in the last two years. She

:23:19.:23:23.

took out 60% of her doubles? Unbelievable. 63%. That is good on

:23:24.:23:31.

any stage? She plays unbelievable darts for a lady. She did not score

:23:32.:23:37.

so well in that match, but she finishes well. That is her strongest

:23:38.:23:43.

point. If you play someone, and they get 83, 56, she is really dangerous

:23:44.:23:50.

on the shots out. It is lovely watching her play. She was a big

:23:51.:23:58.

favourite going into that game against Paula. Anastacia is

:23:59.:24:02.

backstage, Trina is backstage, details backstage. They are all

:24:03.:24:06.

watching that and going, it is Lisa, she is ready. They are playing on

:24:07.:24:14.

the tour so they are used to playing her. They know how she plays. She

:24:15.:24:19.

brings her form here, as she does all your rank, onto the stage. That

:24:20.:24:25.

is the difference. The other girls can playroom a good darts on the

:24:26.:24:34.

day, but she is more consistent. We have got Lisa Ashton backstage in

:24:35.:24:38.

the players' bar. If you could have heard that chat

:24:39.:24:43.

between Colin and Bobby, you would have been blushing. Great

:24:44.:24:48.

percentages on your doubles. You have laid down a declaration of

:24:49.:24:52.

intent. I am happy with the doubles this time. If I can get my schooling

:24:53.:24:57.

together I will be happy. I am trying for three. Bobby was saying

:24:58.:25:02.

that perhaps the scoring was not at the huge level we saw in the first

:25:03.:25:07.

round last year against ETA. But great to get that match out of the

:25:08.:25:15.

way. Yes, good to get the quarterfinal -- did to get into the

:25:16.:25:20.

quarterfinal. I will practice more. Before we have an orange juice, we

:25:21.:25:26.

want to give you the opportunity to see your final darts. Yes, three

:25:27.:25:35.

darts, not messing about. It did not look as though there were any nerves

:25:36.:25:40.

from you at all. There can always be a little flutter out there on that

:25:41.:25:43.

big stage. There is a little flutter, but you have got to keep it

:25:44.:25:47.

under control. I've got to concentrate on the next game now I

:25:48.:25:52.

have got my first one out of the way. You are here for a slice of

:25:53.:25:57.

history, and you're one step closer. We will see you in the

:25:58.:26:00.

quarterfinals. Thank you. Joining us on the balcony

:26:01.:26:06.

is a familiar face at the Lakeside, Chuck Norris. He has made the

:26:07.:26:13.

transition from the Ally Pally. Lisa Ashton has lifted the ladies game to

:26:14.:26:18.

another level. If you could bottle goes doubles, you would buy a few,

:26:19.:26:23.

wouldn't you? Yes, you would take it. She has done great for the

:26:24.:26:35.

women's' game. -- women's game. We have been delighted to see you go

:26:36.:26:41.

from the BDO to the PDC and make the quarterfinals. You may be kicking

:26:42.:26:47.

yourself that you're standing here are not getting ready for a

:26:48.:26:51.

semifinal tonight. Yes, but darts is darts. It is nice to be here, and a

:26:52.:26:57.

fantastic welcome back. It is a day off before I drive home. You cannot

:26:58.:27:01.

take it away from my opponent, he bashed me up in the last few legs. I

:27:02.:27:07.

ran out of energy. Let's get two predictions from you. First of all,

:27:08.:27:15.

the one that is easier. Anderson? An old Dutch final. They are both

:27:16.:27:20.

raiding their luck. I think it could be a Dutch title this year. You

:27:21.:27:25.

never know. Gary Somerset, years playing well. He is playing well in

:27:26.:27:29.

practice. Lewis as well, the best he has looked for months. It belongs to

:27:30.:27:42.

anybody. It is brilliant, it is wide open, very exciting. Were you going?

:27:43.:27:47.

If the same guys keep winning the tournament, it gets boring. The

:27:48.:27:54.

captain of the ship is Phil Taylor. It is nice to see other guys get

:27:55.:27:58.

through as well. You did extremely well. You had a nine darker. You got

:27:59.:28:07.

up to the quarterfinals. You did marvellous. I am proud of you. You

:28:08.:28:16.

will learn. You got knocked out last night, you could have played here

:28:17.:28:22.

today. It is a lot more difficult. More players to choose from. Jim

:28:23.:28:28.

Williams was one of my outside tapes. He produced the goods today.

:28:29.:28:35.

He has lots of confidence. I have come down to watch Darryl Fitton

:28:36.:28:40.

today. He deserves one. He is brilliant, I love him. The pressure

:28:41.:28:46.

is on Glenn Durrant. The banter that he and Jim Williams have together,

:28:47.:28:51.

years through, Glen has got to do it. There will be some names we have

:28:52.:28:58.

not spoke about. Jeff Smith flew through last year. He was brilliant.

:28:59.:29:04.

He just fell off the rails against Scott Mitchell. You would not have

:29:05.:29:08.

predicted that. Do you remember your debut. My debut was against Steve

:29:09.:29:18.

West. I think he won the second leg. I love you, Steve. What is it like

:29:19.:29:25.

waiting in that famous area, because we have got a New Zealander coming

:29:26.:29:31.

up next. It brought back all the memories for me, when I was waiting

:29:32.:29:37.

to go on stage the other night, before Christmas. You get

:29:38.:29:43.

butterflies. Once you are up there, you're working. We are proud of you,

:29:44.:29:46.

thank you for joining us. The debutante foreign news -- the

:29:47.:29:52.

debutante for New Zealand is none other than Craig Caldwell. He is

:29:53.:29:57.

going to take on Alan Soutar. Craig has come all the way from New

:29:58.:30:02.

Zealand. He has been talking with Rob Walker.

:30:03.:30:07.

How special is it to be amongst the small number of New Zealanders who

:30:08.:30:11.

have made it? It is a privilege to be part of it.

:30:12.:30:21.

Some of my idols growing up have been here. Here I am now. You were

:30:22.:30:30.

watching Mike Day on the Internet last year, has he defended tips on

:30:31.:30:36.

how to conduct yourself amongst the cauldron noise and sense of

:30:37.:30:40.

anticipation? He gave me a bit of advice, he loved it. He has got

:30:41.:30:46.

nothing but good memories, he speaks very highly of the tournament. I

:30:47.:30:51.

have found that already. How many days ago did you arrive? There is

:30:52.:30:56.

the fact of jet lag, are you feeling OK? I feel good, I was here five or

:30:57.:31:05.

six days before. I have found it is about the right time to get over the

:31:06.:31:08.

jet lag, hopefully I have got it right again. What can we expect by

:31:09.:31:15.

way of a walk on? Are you modest, or do you get the crowd fired up?

:31:16.:31:20.

Sometimes I fire them up, but I might be modest, with it being my

:31:21.:31:24.

first time. We will see what happens! The best of luck, you have

:31:25.:31:30.

travelled a long way to be here, the crowd will give you a brilliant

:31:31.:31:34.

reception, good luck. I always shudder when we get anybody

:31:35.:31:38.

from New Zealand or Australia because there have been some amazing

:31:39.:31:46.

days. Tony fleet comes to mind are. Don't mention that! Alan Soutar has

:31:47.:31:53.

been here once before, he did not get through. He will want to put

:31:54.:32:02.

that right. He knows what it is like on other stages to beat the big

:32:03.:32:06.

names, people want to get stuck in. He has got to get through a

:32:07.:32:09.

qualifier first, against Craig Caldwell. Last year, we were talking

:32:10.:32:18.

about Jeff Smith coming through the qualifiers, Seigo Asada, he is back

:32:19.:32:23.

again, from Japan. He is amazing. Looking forward to that. That is

:32:24.:32:30.

what I like, we cannot tell the audience a million encyclopaedic

:32:31.:32:32.

things about some of the qualifiers, but it is always an adventure. He is

:32:33.:32:41.

quite a steady player. The guy from New Zealand, I do not know much

:32:42.:32:44.

about him, I would not go that far to watch him. It is a long way to

:32:45.:32:50.

play a game of darts, so I hope he plays well and enjoys himself. The

:32:51.:32:57.

Scottish guy is quite tidy. It is easy to know which one is which! The

:32:58.:33:04.

New Zealanders have done quite well around these parts recently. Winning

:33:05.:33:08.

for the first time the Rugby World Cup outside of their own nation.

:33:09.:33:18.

Maybe he will continue it coming. No haka fondue, the stage will

:33:19.:33:26.

collapse! One player making his debut, one here for just the second

:33:27.:33:30.

time. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the

:33:31.:33:36.

2016 Lakeside World Championship, and we now introduce a preliminary

:33:37.:33:39.

round match here at the home of well darts, the Lakeside! We welcome to

:33:40.:33:48.

the stage our New Zealand regional qualifier, all the way from

:33:49.:33:50.

Wellington, it is Craig Caldwell! We now bring to the stage a man that

:33:51.:34:47.

came through the BDO World Championship qualifiers, a former

:34:48.:34:53.

World Cup team winner for his country of Scotland, it is Alan

:34:54.:34:54.

Soutar! It is -- is Craig Caldwell the

:34:55.:35:45.

all-black going back? It means just as much to Alan Soutar. Let's go

:35:46.:35:49.

back to the commentary box. They are vying for a first-round

:35:50.:35:58.

place, the winner will play the defending champion, Scott Mitchell.

:35:59.:36:03.

Craig Caldwell has come a long way, the New Zealander. 42 years old, he

:36:04.:36:12.

has been the man in the kiwi sport, he heads the BDO New Zealand

:36:13.:36:17.

regional rankings, he has had four ranking title victories this year,

:36:18.:36:22.

three times a runner-up, and played in the PDC world Series, losing to

:36:23.:36:28.

James Wade, and playing in Perth and Auckland against Phil Taylor. Alan

:36:29.:36:34.

Soutar, 37, five years the Junior, loving the trousers. Scottish

:36:35.:36:40.

qualifier from Arbroath. He went to the last 32 in 2011, he has never

:36:41.:36:45.

won a ranking title but qualified through the play-offs in Hull and

:36:46.:36:51.

beat the European Cup singles champion David Concannon from

:36:52.:36:52.

Ireland in the final. Alan Soutar with the darts. The

:36:53.:37:07.

first to three takes the set, the first to three sets take the match.

:37:08.:37:14.

What a start. Off the wire. Does not help.

:37:15.:37:24.

Unlucky as well the Craig Caldwell. One apiece. Dominated the kiwi game

:37:25.:37:41.

with Kobe Harris in the last year. Alan Soutar, the pride of Scotland,

:37:42.:37:46.

we have had Scottish champions in the past, Les Wallace in 97, and who

:37:47.:37:56.

can forget Jockey Wilson, 82 and 89? Alan Soutar has taken advantage,

:37:57.:38:01.

hundred and 20 and a ton in the first six darts. He has got the

:38:02.:38:07.

Tartan on, going to the hoedown tonight. Not being fazed by the

:38:08.:38:13.

pressure of being on the big stage in front of the TV cameras.

:38:14.:38:21.

This can be done. After nine darts! He will still be coming back after

:38:22.:38:34.

this one as well. No checkout for Alan Soutar. For Craig Caldwell,

:38:35.:38:41.

rather. Alan Soutar did not need the final three. A nice cover shot.

:38:42.:38:53.

A nice solid start from Alan Soutar. Still struggling, Craig Caldwell.

:38:54.:39:06.

The Scottish international. He has got support in the crowd. They are

:39:07.:39:21.

happy with that. That is a good start. I was going to

:39:22.:39:36.

say Craig has not quite settled in, but that will make him feel better.

:39:37.:39:42.

I like his style, though, he pushes them through the air. Similar as

:39:43.:39:52.

well. The Scots are happy. As well they might be. The early stages of

:39:53.:39:59.

the match, but Alan Soutar averaging over 96 so far.

:40:00.:40:12.

His nickname is Souts. That took some thinking! I would have thought

:40:13.:40:24.

it would have been Trousers! Craig Caldwell's ranking stands at 36. He

:40:25.:40:30.

was the favourite with the bookies, quoted of the 9-4 on the favourite

:40:31.:40:35.

for the match, but Alan Soutar does not care about that, he is getting

:40:36.:40:39.

on with doing what he knows he can do.

:40:40.:40:47.

Craig Caldwell with -- will come back with time on his side, but Alan

:40:48.:41:04.

Soutar putting pressure on. A tough double, nobody likes that

:41:05.:41:22.

one, but straight at it, and the big fella back on level terms. It is

:41:23.:41:27.

turning out to be a good match, this, the early stages. The first

:41:28.:41:35.

match we commentated on was a bit scrappy, Jim Williams beating Tony

:41:36.:41:41.

O'Shea. This has a more pleasing look to it. Souts' average up in

:41:42.:41:45.

three figures. The first attempt at these

:41:46.:42:05.

championships the Craig Caldwell. Blocked the bed. Seven guys have won

:42:06.:42:13.

this tournament at the first try. Starting off with Leighton Rees in

:42:14.:42:20.

1978. A great mate of mine, I miss him so much. Another of those who

:42:21.:42:27.

won at the first attempt, Jelle Klaasen. He was here or hereabouts

:42:28.:42:34.

last night, he has his own big semifinal to look forward to

:42:35.:42:38.

tonight. He won the first one, in the heart of the Midlands. Alan

:42:39.:42:50.

Soutar's girlfriend. Amanda. Invoking a bit of divine

:42:51.:42:56.

intervention, maybe. There is Cathy, she has come across from New Zealand

:42:57.:42:58.

with Craig. It is a long walk! That is handy, but Craig Caldwell

:42:59.:43:15.

has 102 to take the lead against the darts.

:43:16.:43:37.

Now then, a chance here for Craig Caldwell. There it is. That is

:43:38.:43:52.

against the throw. Craig Caldwell seizes the advantage in this opening

:43:53.:43:56.

set and now has the darts to close it out. Also get some applause from

:43:57.:44:05.

his partner. The fifth kiwi to have made his way across to play in these

:44:06.:44:09.

championships. Mike day a couple of times. Peter Hunt back in the 90s,

:44:10.:44:22.

he played four times. The winner of this will be looking to take a place

:44:23.:44:27.

against Scott Mitchell, I don't doubt he is watching somewhere. He

:44:28.:44:37.

has been moving around. Taking the air and taking all the atmosphere.

:44:38.:44:43.

He has been a busy boy with the exhibitions, he reckons he has done

:44:44.:44:47.

65 or thereabouts, as well as running his farm. He bought himself

:44:48.:44:54.

a tractor. I think he bought himself a very good tractor!

:44:55.:45:13.

She has yet to play in the ladies', she is going to be in action later

:45:14.:45:27.

on. I saw her practising in the hotel last night and she almost got

:45:28.:45:32.

a nine darker, Fallon Sherrock. She missed it. Well, we will be keeping

:45:33.:45:41.

our eyes open. I must confess, I was in the bar momentarily, all in the

:45:42.:45:49.

interests of research. That is going to help, yes. 110, four Soutar. It

:45:50.:46:00.

puts the pressure on. A great first dart. How about that? How about

:46:01.:46:12.

that? That makes it 2-2, in the opening set. Soutar has the darts.

:46:13.:46:21.

Advantage Scotland. It is a good match. It just shows you. He is from

:46:22.:46:33.

New Zealand. Arbroath is a long way, but not quite in the same league. I

:46:34.:46:38.

was going to say, maybe just a few hundred miles. The second appearance

:46:39.:46:47.

at these championships for Alan Soutar, Scottish international from

:46:48.:46:53.

2011. That is a bad here day. Yes, he runs the Angus darts Academy now,

:46:54.:47:06.

since 2012. He is a good player. He has 400 youth players in the

:47:07.:47:09.

Academy. Putting back into the sport. Not only a good player, but a

:47:10.:47:18.

good tutor. Good darts. That is excellent. Now check out, though.

:47:19.:47:31.

No, not on 176. He has got six darts. Three of them. Six from here,

:47:32.:47:47.

for the Scotsman. One, two. 56 left. That leaves him double talk. He

:47:48.:47:55.

looks to the Manor born on the stage. That was a really impressive

:47:56.:47:59.

setup. Coldwell can do no more than try and take a big number. --

:48:00.:48:08.

Caldwell. Soutar, tops for the opening set. Steady yourself, lad.

:48:09.:48:17.

How about that again? Years finishing well. The roar up there on

:48:18.:48:24.

the stage. That is to his travelling band of supporters. He is loving it.

:48:25.:48:31.

He has brought the clan with him as well. They are loving it. First

:48:32.:48:41.

blood to Alan Soutar, the 37-year-old Scottish qualifier.

:48:42.:48:57.

Carry on like this and it will be a great match. Right down to the wire.

:48:58.:49:15.

It has got the makings, hasn't it? Yes, really putting those darts

:49:16.:49:44.

where he wants them. I finish 4161. -- a finish for 161. All Alan can do

:49:45.:49:54.

now is hope. Caldwell has lots of time, because Soutar is way back on

:49:55.:50:08.

261. 12 Alison is -- 12 darts throwing and he is on 62. He wants

:50:09.:50:18.

double 16, treble ten. Double 16 with this dart. Yes. Holding his

:50:19.:50:36.

throw, nice checkout. A 15 darker. -- darter. It is a good match this.

:50:37.:50:51.

Solid again from Caldwell, peppering the treble 20.

:50:52.:51:16.

Having to make an adjustment, coming down with a really good cover shot.

:51:17.:51:23.

Ross Montgomery, another Scots men in the crowd, watching on. There he

:51:24.:51:37.

is. Cherishing ambitions of his own and realising he is on camera as

:51:38.:51:45.

well. He's a great player. Soutar needs a big hit. Over 100 points

:51:46.:51:53.

adrift, this is handy. Another would be ideal. The first maximum of the

:51:54.:52:02.

match, and what a time to do it. You could not place them together.

:52:03.:52:11.

Soutar coming back with 106 to square the match. That 180 was

:52:12.:52:16.

perfect and timing. Can Soutar finish it? That is handy. Treble 20.

:52:17.:52:35.

Still a chance. Treble 18, bulls side. Unlucky. Double four four

:52:36.:52:44.

Soutar. That is to square of the second set. His supporters hold

:52:45.:52:49.

their hands and hope, living every moment with him. Double four,

:52:50.:52:55.

getting closer. Just the wrong side of the wire. It clipped the barrel.

:52:56.:53:09.

And pressure. Soutar on four. Double two. He has got to get this, so

:53:10.:53:22.

important that you does not lose his throw. That makes it harder. It is

:53:23.:53:29.

not the best double on the board, double two. That is the shot. 2-0.

:53:30.:53:45.

He lost the first set to Soutar, but Caldwell is right back in this

:53:46.:53:57.

match. Being done. -- ding dong. That is the sort of form that has

:53:58.:54:02.

served him well. He has come from down under as the man on form. That

:54:03.:54:08.

is the second maximum. That one is not and under. -- an up and under.

:54:09.:54:25.

He is hitting them now. And another, and another. Back-to-back 180s. At

:54:26.:54:43.

nine dart finish. Can he do it? Wolfie almost did last year. Just

:54:44.:54:51.

the wrong side of the wire, and the pantomime brewing. It was a great

:54:52.:54:59.

effort. The main thing now, finish it off. He is going well now, Tony.

:55:00.:55:12.

It is the first time he has smiled. I wonder if he can play rugby. He

:55:13.:55:17.

looks as though he might have done, one time, he is a big man. How many

:55:18.:55:31.

times have we seen that? 20 would have left double top, and you hit

:55:32.:55:45.

the treble. It is double top. He threw well. He needed the treble 20,

:55:46.:55:57.

and it away. Now back on level terms. The checkout percentage of

:55:58.:56:06.

Soutar is pretty extraordinary. -- Caldwell. They did this, 71%. If he

:56:07.:56:13.

keeps that up, he will be difficult to beat. Less than 30%, not so

:56:14.:56:27.

clever, 40-60, quite good. That was a really good effort. If you are

:56:28.:56:33.

just joining us, there has been no nine darker in the BDO World

:56:34.:56:40.

Championships since Polly May 19 90. And I called it. Brilliantly, no

:56:41.:56:58.

doubt. -- since Paul Lim in 1990. He was out golfing in the afternoon. He

:56:59.:57:08.

took the money from me. Ted Hankey is here. I saw him wandering around

:57:09.:57:16.

the tell, muttering and groaning about the fact he has been quoted as

:57:17.:57:23.

80-1 with the bookies. I think he might have had a sniff. It was a big

:57:24.:57:30.

sniff. He said, I am going to win. Ted Hankey is one of the characters.

:57:31.:57:36.

Yes, we will have to move the air conditioning, though. You can say

:57:37.:57:44.

that. Here we go, treble 20. The bull's-eye. So, Caldwell to take

:57:45.:57:57.

this opening leg against the darts who is -- against the darts. Superb.

:57:58.:58:12.

That hurts Soutar. Well, we have certainly found some talent. The big

:58:13.:58:18.

man is getting the big scores. He is getting the big as it shots. -- big

:58:19.:58:34.

out shots. That will make the checkout percentage even better. He

:58:35.:58:40.

has got 75% now. He will take some beating. He looks in the zone. The

:58:41.:58:48.

overall averages are not what they were. Soutar has gone off the boil

:58:49.:58:50.

little. A couple of loose darts in the

:58:51.:58:58.

meantime. I wonder how long Craig has actually

:58:59.:59:18.

been over here. The old jet is certainly a factor when you start

:59:19.:59:21.

travelling around the world, I know from gruesome personal experience.

:59:22.:59:25.

It is some journey, though. The last time I was there, they had

:59:26.:59:41.

to turn around, the engine was on fire. Do not see that. Yes. Soutar

:59:42.:59:51.

needs to get back quickly. He needs to break back. That would really

:59:52.:59:55.

help, he needed that treble. He is not on a finish.

:59:56.:00:15.

The Scottish flag on his dart. This altar.

:00:16.:00:30.

Who we go. Not now. A chance to Craig Caldwell. Shanghai is what is

:00:31.:00:44.

required, trouble, single and double. It is not great, restricted

:00:45.:00:55.

view, but he has found it. By the width of a wire. Unluckily. A chance

:00:56.:01:03.

which has to be taken by Alan Soutar. He has done it. It makes it

:01:04.:01:17.

all square. He got away with that a bit. They know this first dart at

:01:18.:01:28.

20, then in it goes. He says, yes, I can do it! What a difference a dark

:01:29.:01:37.

makes. Young and old. They are all loving it.

:01:38.:01:55.

Having to switch and doing so beautifully once more. A cracking

:01:56.:02:00.

cover shot from Alan Soutar. He has got the advantage of this

:02:01.:02:21.

throw, and he has made it count. He has left a finish.

:02:22.:02:32.

It is a good response, this is a good leg.

:02:33.:02:44.

Unlucky. Every chance for Craig Caldwell. A great first dart.

:02:45.:02:59.

A valiant attempt. Swings and roundabouts. It is all happening.

:03:00.:03:14.

Look at the pain they are going through. Can he do it? He has bust!

:03:15.:03:23.

He went for three, he hit 19. Yes! Nerves from Alan Soutar. Craig

:03:24.:03:42.

Caldwell has got the bit between his teeth. That is the break of the

:03:43.:03:49.

throw. Now he will be throwing with the darts to make this 2-1 in his

:03:50.:03:57.

advantage. Alan Soutar having to compose himself and put that behind

:03:58.:04:04.

him. A bit of nervousness. Creeping ever closer.

:04:05.:04:18.

Craig Caldwell's Lakeside debut. Looking to make it a happy

:04:19.:04:24.

introduction. The crowd giving them the best of

:04:25.:04:40.

order. Yes! It is a maximum. That is his third, it has put him on

:04:41.:05:01.

a finish. It is what Keith Beller did to win in 1983, he took the

:05:02.:05:06.

title at the first attempt. He cannot replicate it, but he has a

:05:07.:05:12.

lot of time on his side. What a cracker.

:05:13.:05:20.

We know they have got some talent in Australia and New Zealand.

:05:21.:05:31.

That puts him in control of the match, potentially. Alan Soutar

:05:32.:05:46.

could not clear it out, and the man who has travelled 12,000 miles or

:05:47.:05:53.

more is now in a strong position. He is with the darts in what could turn

:05:54.:06:01.

out to be the final set. Well said. It has been magic, I have loved it,

:06:02.:06:08.

have you? A good game. Interesting, the way it has turned around,

:06:09.:06:13.

because Alan Soutar started impressively, but the tension has

:06:14.:06:16.

been palpable in the last few legs. It is a result of Craig Caldwell

:06:17.:06:25.

cranking up the pressure. Still eight out of 13, a 62% check out

:06:26.:06:27.

rate, for the big kiwi. A nice response. It puts Alan Soutar

:06:28.:06:44.

on a finish. Alan Soutar is in a great position.

:06:45.:07:10.

He can take this against the throw. This is important. If he can put

:07:11.:07:21.

this one away... On the wire! OK, Craig, can you do it?

:07:22.:07:40.

That would have been to have taken it against the throw. Craig Caldwell

:07:41.:07:58.

has made a hash of this. What a last dart that was, he needed

:07:59.:08:39.

it. Nobody likes being up on 11. -- double 1. He has blocked it.

:08:40.:08:58.

Gary Caldwell has lost his momentum. -- Craig Caldwell. It is slipping by

:08:59.:09:14.

a little. Alan Soutar needs to capitalise. Excellent 19th. He is

:09:15.:09:19.

doing precisely that. It is a tight match. Scott will take

:09:20.:09:38.

that. -- the Scot. It has hit the wire! What a dark!

:09:39.:10:22.

How close can you get? Sliding in off the barrel of his

:10:23.:11:34.

first one to go ahead. What a dart it was. The first one was ideal as a

:11:35.:11:47.

marker. Andy Fordham is in the house, I am told. A lovely fella.

:11:48.:11:54.

Back throwing competitively. And a former champion. The old Viking.

:11:55.:12:08.

He loved it. He knew how important it was.

:12:09.:12:28.

Andy Fordham the centre of attention with the crowd. A great man. And a

:12:29.:12:36.

great friend. He is a nice fella. Trying to stay in the match now.

:12:37.:13:27.

Craig Caldwell is one leg away from 3-1 and a place in the first round

:13:28.:13:31.

proper and a much against the defending champion Scott Mitchell.

:13:32.:13:34.

He has lasted the pace a lot better. Maybe he should have switched away

:13:35.:14:00.

from the 20 there. His route towards the treble partially dropped --

:14:01.:14:01.

blocked. I think you are right. Alan Soutar has to win this leg to

:14:02.:14:19.

keep the match alive. He is going the right way about it. His second

:14:20.:14:28.

maximum. Not on a finish, that he is in a good position.

:14:29.:14:37.

It glanced off the barrel. A bit unlucky with the last dart.

:14:38.:14:56.

The treble remains elusive. Two trebles would be handy.

:14:57.:15:10.

He needs to get this finish. That is not what he required, he needed 14

:15:11.:15:22.

for the bull's-eye and he gets treble in 11. 15 would leave him on

:15:23.:15:34.

double 8. Craig Caldwell, 76 for the match.

:15:35.:15:47.

And it is they are. What a match you have seen. Absolutely fantastic. New

:15:48.:16:02.

Zealand and Scotland, giving it their all. New Zealand, you did your

:16:03.:16:09.

country proud. Quality finishing, that was the difference between

:16:10.:16:15.

them, and Craig Caldwell takes his place in the first round, where he

:16:16.:16:21.

will face Scott Mitchell. Ladies and gentlemen, show your appreciation as

:16:22.:16:25.

they leave the stage, Scotland's Alan Soutar, and through to the

:16:26.:16:30.

first round proper, the man from New Zealand, Craig Caldwell.

:16:31.:16:33.

APPLAUSE Every single mile travelled, every

:16:34.:16:57.

minute of sleep last, if they are upon hour on the practice board has

:16:58.:17:01.

been worth it. New Zealander Craig Caldwell has won on his debut. His

:17:02.:17:13.

debut at the legendary Lakeside. Bobby George, an average of 91.2.

:17:14.:17:23.

Our first nine dart average just shy of 100. These debutants always

:17:24.:17:30.

struggle! He played well. Soutar played well at the beginning of the

:17:31.:17:34.

match but he died off a little bit. The New Zealander came back

:17:35.:17:39.

stronger. His finishing was great. In the last set, he took over, but

:17:40.:17:42.

he played really well. Powerful darts. He did not think about it, he

:17:43.:17:51.

got on with the game. We never think we are going to get civil darts into

:17:52.:17:57.

a nine darter with the New Zealander. I know. Can you imagine

:17:58.:18:04.

that? He was a bit ropey up to that. It is a shame he did not get it. We

:18:05.:18:16.

only saw a few sets. Four sets. As far as debuts go, it was red up

:18:17.:18:21.

there. There are still 40 men left in this tournament so anything north

:18:22.:18:26.

of 90 is impressive. It is a shorter format. As it goes on, it will get

:18:27.:18:33.

longer. They will settle more. We will see the averages go up. He did

:18:34.:18:39.

extremely well for the first time. Craig Caldwell, qualifier from New

:18:40.:18:45.

Zealand. Scott Mitchell will be thinking this is a good draw him, he

:18:46.:18:50.

will be the big favourite, whoever gets through. But he will be

:18:51.:18:55.

thinking, if he gets a few points better, I could be in trouble. He

:18:56.:19:03.

will be thinking, I want my mum. Rob Walker is talking to Craig Caldwell.

:19:04.:19:08.

From the other side of the world, Craig Caldwell has come here and

:19:09.:19:11.

smashed his Lakeside debut. There was barely a hint of nerves, that

:19:12.:19:16.

was class. It might not have showed on the outside but great to get that

:19:17.:19:22.

one out of the way. How much did you enjoy the occasion? Your checkouts

:19:23.:19:26.

were good, the average was top quality. It led like you were

:19:27.:19:31.

thriving, did you enjoy it? I loved it. The crowd was fantastic. What a

:19:32.:19:38.

great result. Alan is a great guy. I feel sorry for him. There can only

:19:39.:19:42.

be one winner and I am glad I played well. We will give you the

:19:43.:19:49.

opportunity to have a look at your final darts. This is a moment you

:19:50.:19:52.

would have dreamt of, surely. Last year you were watching your

:19:53.:19:55.

compatriot on the Internet. This is you finishing in style. As you say,

:19:56.:20:06.

I have got Scott now. It is another game, but we both have three darts

:20:07.:20:11.

in hand. Who knows? You must think you have a great chance against the

:20:12.:20:15.

defending champion? If I can bring my New Zealand foreign to the stage,

:20:16.:20:20.

who knows? You have had a gigantic journey to get here and there could

:20:21.:20:23.

be more instalments of dramatic come. Get some sleep tonight and we

:20:24.:20:27.

will see you for the big one against Scotty Dog. Some, thank you. Have a

:20:28.:20:33.

couple of sleeping tablets? I love the Lakeside. Dear. I think Rob made

:20:34.:20:43.

a good point. He was watching on the Internet 12 months ago. It is the

:20:44.:20:48.

biggest day of his career. Watching your mate and coming here next year,

:20:49.:20:53.

you cannot get better than that. It is a long way to come for the first

:20:54.:20:58.

round. I am pleased he has got through, he deserves it. The next

:20:59.:21:01.

game of the afternoon session, it is remarkable. Dennis Harbour and

:21:02.:21:11.

Darryl Fitton. It is his 14th consecutive appearance at the

:21:12.:21:15.

Lakeside. It is a roller-coaster for him. Either he goes out in the last

:21:16.:21:20.

right -- either he goes out in the first round or he gets to the last

:21:21.:21:25.

eight. Let's see what sort of frame of mind he is in. I went to watch 20

:21:26.:21:32.

O'Shea play and I thought, I want some of this myself. I love the

:21:33.:21:35.

atmosphere. I have been universe ends. Two famous semifinals against

:21:36.:21:41.

Barney and that classic against your best mate, Tony. Really feel like

:21:42.:21:47.

they were a long time ago? I can remember a games for different

:21:48.:21:51.

reasons. Very difficult playing your friend. I still want to get the

:21:52.:21:56.

again. I want to win the tournament, that is why I keep coming back. Does

:21:57.:22:02.

it ever get a little bit less special, or do you always get the

:22:03.:22:06.

butterflies in that sense of anticipation, irrespective of how

:22:07.:22:10.

many years it has been? I remember talking to someone a couple of years

:22:11.:22:17.

ago. They said, when do you get the buzz, it happens when I drive into

:22:18.:22:21.

the Lakeside. The hairs on my neck stand up. No change yesterday, it is

:22:22.:22:26.

a great feeling. With all your experience, what is your tactics

:22:27.:22:29.

over the Christmas period? Do you take a few days off, do the normal

:22:30.:22:33.

socialising, or do you get yourself prepared? I did a lot of cooking

:22:34.:22:40.

this year, myself. I had Christmas at home, relaxing as much as I can.

:22:41.:22:46.

I have been really busy this year. I relaxed a bit too much because it

:22:47.:22:49.

was hard to find the motivation to get back to practising again. Last

:22:50.:22:55.

week I did five hours a day for about four base. It has come back, I

:22:56.:23:01.

think. I feel confident. It sounds like he is ready for action, the

:23:02.:23:07.

best of luck. Thank you. We love him, he is taking on Dennis Harbour,

:23:08.:23:11.

who has been round the block more times than a stray dog. In 1985,

:23:12.:23:16.

Dennis Taylor on the black bull final against Steve Davies. Barry

:23:17.:23:21.

McGuigan became a world champion at Loftus Road. And Dennis Harbour made

:23:22.:23:26.

his television debut. Bobby, years that old you know him. He has been

:23:27.:23:36.

around for ages. He beat James Wade. That was a few years ago. That is

:23:37.:23:43.

when I remember him, 2003. I would have been watching back home in my

:23:44.:23:47.

Superman pyjamas. Hebe James Wade and I think he might have beat

:23:48.:23:52.

Mervyn King that year. I think he got beat by Mervyn King. You could

:23:53.:23:58.

be right. He has been around a long while. Here's a very slow player.

:23:59.:24:04.

That is a nice way to it, Bobby. Darryl is not that fast, but Harbour

:24:05.:24:08.

is very slow. You could call that deliberate. That is the way he

:24:09.:24:15.

throws. Boring, really. He is a boring sort of player. I like them

:24:16.:24:19.

to get on with it. You watching, you will see. He might have speeded up

:24:20.:24:27.

in his old age. If that has not sold it to you, nothing will.

:24:28.:24:31.

Unbelievable. Take a couple of sleeping tablets and we will see you

:24:32.:24:37.

on the other side of this. This is Richard Ashdown. This is the 2016

:24:38.:24:42.

Lakeside World Championship, and we are here that the home of world

:24:43.:24:45.

darts, the Lakeside. CHEERING

:24:46.:24:52.

We now welcome to the stage of former British Open, Dutch open and

:24:53.:24:59.

Masters champion. At Wise Lakeside World Championship semifinalist, it

:25:00.:25:03.

is the Dazzler, Darryl Fitton. Now, to the stage, the reigning

:25:04.:26:04.

Scottish open champion, it is the Harbour master, Dennis Harbour.

:26:05.:26:27.

I am loving that work on from Dennis Harbour. In 2016, is Darryl Fitton

:26:28.:27:17.

fit for purpose? If not, Dennis Harbour will run him aground.

:27:18.:27:22.

It is a blast from the past taking on a blast from the past and

:27:23.:27:27.

present. These two made their debuts on the same day in 2003. Fitton has

:27:28.:27:34.

been here every year since, it is a full decade since Harbour last

:27:35.:27:40.

directed darting traffic by the Basingstoke Canal. Deadly Dennis was

:27:41.:27:47.

Dutch man's Jelle Klaasen's first victim on his way to the title in

:27:48.:27:53.

2006. But the 50-year-old is back on form, and that is why he is back it

:27:54.:27:58.

Lakeside. Darryl Fitton is seeded seven this year. There would be no

:27:59.:28:03.

more popular winner, but do not discount Dennis. Fitton against

:28:04.:28:07.

Harbour, the first to three sets. Fitton with the darts. Dennis

:28:08.:28:20.

Harbour has had three ranking title successes this season. The Scottish

:28:21.:28:28.

open, the Isle of Man open, and the English national singles title. That

:28:29.:28:33.

is a good start for Fitton. On the way to the singles title, hebe Dean

:28:34.:28:37.

Reynolds, Ted Hankey, Tony O'Shea and Jim Williams. Not a bad line-up.

:28:38.:28:50.

Not a bad start. How about that. He currently averages 180.

:28:51.:28:59.

That is a handy response from big barrel. Price semifinalist. --

:29:00.:29:08.

Darryl Fitton. Ten ranking titles in all to his name. We will see of

:29:09.:29:15.

Dennis can build. That is four. The crowd would have loved to have seen

:29:16.:29:22.

a nine darter. We all would. What a start to the match, Bobby George

:29:23.:29:26.

said it might be boring. Are you sure, Bobby? We will have some more

:29:27.:29:33.

of this, please. Darryl Fitton is really boring. -- really boring.

:29:34.:29:44.

Madness, they are a fan of his. He certainly gives them a great

:29:45.:30:05.

Harbour with 84 against the throw. Start with treble 21 would expect.

:30:06.:30:19.

14 would leave the bull's-eye. -- 20, one would expect. Bull's-eye for

:30:20.:30:30.

the opening leg of the match. Would have been a 12 dart leg for Dennis

:30:31.:30:36.

Harbour. In his first visit to that stage in fully a decade. He will be

:30:37.:30:39.

back though,. That is a good start, sliding in.

:30:40.:31:02.

The opening leg against the throw going for Dennis Harbour. Darryl

:31:03.:31:11.

Fitton the favourite. Harbour, a man in form, made his debut way back in

:31:12.:31:13.

1985. I say it is Dennis Harbour's first

:31:14.:31:46.

visit to Lakeside since 2006, he has been on the stage before as recent

:31:47.:31:52.

as July, he won the Gold cup pairs for Cambridgeshire with Eddie

:31:53.:31:58.

Martin. On the same stage but a completely different atmosphere. Did

:31:59.:32:04.

research. -- good. Thank you very much.

:32:05.:32:11.

Excellent. Fitton's first maximum of the match.

:32:12.:32:22.

Such a popular player among all those who really Darryl Fitton. A

:32:23.:32:39.

big teddy bear of a bloke. Can he build on that 180? He won't want to

:32:40.:32:48.

let the Harbour Mastour Sail away from it. And another maximum from

:32:49.:32:59.

the master. The Harbour is out with the washing. And Darryl is ideally

:33:00.:33:09.

placed to strike straight back. 42 now required. Steadies himself.

:33:10.:33:21.

Double 6, wouldn't expect that, but he adjusts. An 11 dart leg for the

:33:22.:33:34.

Dazzler Darryl Fitton. He drops anchor in the match. First to three

:33:35.:33:41.

sets goes through, each set the best of five legs so a race to three. So

:33:42.:33:47.

far, this is everything we could have hoped for and more.

:33:48.:34:00.

Fitton has settled into this one beautifully. Best year was arguably

:34:01.:34:11.

2005 when he got to the semis, beating lots of players, hammered

:34:12.:34:18.

Robert Thornton 5-0 but then lost to Barney in the semis. Lost to Tony

:34:19.:34:32.

O'Shea in that occasion. About time we saw Fitton in a final really.

:34:33.:34:38.

This 14th consecutive visit to that stage in the war championships and

:34:39.:34:42.

he and Dennis Harbour made their debuts on the same day in 2003. He

:34:43.:34:52.

will have his own ideas Dennis. Watching the board as Darryl peppers

:34:53.:34:59.

that treble 20. He beat Glenn Dorrans on each occasion earlier

:35:00.:35:03.

this year and in the Isle of Man he had a victory over coffee. --

:35:04.:35:17.

Wolfie. A man to be reckoned with. The first-round match when they go

:35:18.:35:22.

up in the air, you don't want Dennis Harbour coming against you when you

:35:23.:35:32.

are the number seven seed. Which way is he going, treble 7 or bull? He

:35:33.:35:42.

will come back with eight double top. And Fitton to hold onto the

:35:43.:35:50.

throw and emphatically take the advantage. What a set it has been

:35:51.:35:55.

already. Let's see if he can do it, 48. Double 16, double Fitton. --

:35:56.:36:04.

Darryl Fitton. I tell you what, we have had a 14

:36:05.:36:18.

dart leg, and 11 dart leg and now a 15 dart leg. And two doubles out of

:36:19.:36:27.

three for Fitton which is handy. And look at this average from Darryl

:36:28.:36:33.

Fitton. Still early in the match of course but an average of 105 with

:36:34.:36:41.

two doubles hit out of three, a traffic starts. The best was the 100

:36:42.:36:48.

plus he managed against Gary Robson in 2008 and he is looking in prime

:36:49.:36:54.

form. Good research John. LAUGHING

:36:55.:37:01.

Touche. I would not be surprised if the Flying Scotsman was watching

:37:02.:37:02.

now. Three visits to the oche, three 100

:37:03.:37:08.

and 40s. A chilly wet day down here in

:37:09.:37:35.

Frimley Green but it is a hot atmosphere inside the Lakeside arena

:37:36.:37:42.

and Harbour is clinging on and has the advantage here.

:37:43.:37:50.

That was the head of Glenn Dorrans, and it's Kerry to? -- a bit scary

:37:51.:38:02.

wasn't it? 81 to level the opening set. Treble 10 for double 16. He

:38:03.:38:17.

will be back. Fitton a long way adrift. 140 would help proceedings.

:38:18.:38:29.

Needs a treble to get on a finish. Not under much pressure but some for

:38:30.:38:44.

double top. 2-2 but Fitton with the darts, where we started in the

:38:45.:38:48.

opening set and Darryl Fitton who has produced to refix darts -- good

:38:49.:38:57.

darts, is now looking for maximum number three. And again. Room for

:38:58.:39:04.

three more darts as well wasn't there? To reflect start to a leg

:39:05.:39:12.

that Darryl will feel he must win. -- did start. In the context you do

:39:13.:39:16.

not want to play this well and lose it. Fair play to Dennis Harbour

:39:17.:39:22.

hanging on in there and that is a good response.

:39:23.:39:30.

Still has plenty to aim at. An opportunity for Dennis Harbour. The

:39:31.:39:44.

deciding leg of this first set. A really good set to watch this. He

:39:45.:39:52.

will be disappointed with that. To throw for Cheshire once upon a

:39:53.:40:05.

time did Darryl, now living in Manchester.

:40:06.:40:14.

That is not a finish 161, over, it is of course.

:40:15.:40:27.

Let's see if he can do it? 161. He has six from here so doesn't

:40:28.:40:38.

necessarily need to go for the bull. It looks like he's going for it.

:40:39.:40:46.

That would have raised the roof if he fired that one in. Crystal,

:40:47.:40:53.

Darryl's wife giving him the thumbs up.

:40:54.:40:59.

He still has time. Had to get that treble. Fitton 47 to win this set.

:41:00.:41:16.

Two dart at double 16 and that will do it. Another 14 dart leg. What

:41:17.:41:27.

said. He is charged up. -- what a set. Taking the first set.

:41:28.:41:42.

He beat Alan Norris last year Darryl Fitton in the World Championships.

:41:43.:41:49.

Here goes Harbour. When all is said and done, it was

:41:50.:42:03.

just a set, a fantastic set, a high-quality cert with the darts.

:42:04.:42:08.

Always felt like a match in itself, drama each way, the crowd right into

:42:09.:42:10.

it. Cracking finish from Fitton. Not quite that time, Fitton had a

:42:11.:42:51.

nice throw which are served him well over the years.

:42:52.:42:59.

Hasn't Ashley won a ranking title since the German open in 2014. --

:43:00.:43:06.

actually. Got as far as the quarterfinal when he lost out to

:43:07.:43:12.

Glenn Dorrans. Did reach a couple last year Darryl. Runner-up to

:43:13.:43:17.

Martin Adams in the Dutch open, runner-up to Scott Mitchell in the

:43:18.:43:22.

Jersey open. Already on a finish Dennis Harbour. Not any more. But he

:43:23.:43:28.

will be back. Considering the options. May go the

:43:29.:43:46.

18 routes, he tried to but one is not what he wants. 180 would make

:43:47.:43:55.

you look a whole lot healthier. Bush might make it. Unlucky.

:43:56.:44:03.

Here we go for the opening leg. Topps he needs. Good marker. --

:44:04.:44:34.

tops. Annoyed. No way he can check out. Just trying to make his life

:44:35.:44:43.

easier for the next visit if there should be one? Chances look against

:44:44.:44:53.

it. Tops for Harbour. And the Cambridgeshire man takes the first

:44:54.:44:55.

leg of the second set. An amazing array of fancied dress

:44:56.:45:19.

costumes down there. -- fancy dress. Some of it, you have to say, in a

:45:20.:45:23.

fairly hot environment, must be quite trying. We have seen suits of

:45:24.:45:32.

armour and gorillas. Bad hair days all around. Is that Alice Cooper? I

:45:33.:45:38.

am told it is Kiss. An American band.

:45:39.:45:50.

You know who they are here to support? Christian Kist. Harbour

:45:51.:46:09.

putting the Fitton throw under pressure. He has just gone off the

:46:10.:46:14.

boil, Fitton. He was flying in the first set but somehow finding the

:46:15.:46:15.

big numbers elusive out there. Oh, yes, his second 180 of the

:46:16.:46:44.

match, Dennis Harbour. And this is against the throw. It is a really

:46:45.:46:48.

good position that Harbour has landed himself in. Fitton is not on

:46:49.:46:52.

a finish, he has six from here. Bull's-eye. And he goes for it. He

:46:53.:47:01.

will be back. Just looking to pile up the numbers.

:47:02.:47:18.

He was annoyed with the last dart. There was tension in that throw. He

:47:19.:47:48.

dragged that way south of the mark. Fitton, who looked like he was out

:47:49.:47:52.

of it in this set, has the chance to get out of jail.

:47:53.:48:06.

He needed 552 square 80 the match. And that would have hurt Dennis

:48:07.:48:22.

Harbour, but, he does it. Against the darts, Dennis Harbour, now

:48:23.:48:28.

throwing first for the second set. He is unflappable. He looked like he

:48:29.:48:32.

was in danger of being blown away early in the match, but he hung on

:48:33.:48:36.

in the opening set with the advantage of the throw he is now in

:48:37.:48:40.

prime position to take the second and square the match. He has had a

:48:41.:48:48.

funny World Championship career. He met fellow debutant, 19-year-old

:48:49.:48:56.

James Wade in 2003. James Wade missed ten darts to beat Harbour in

:48:57.:49:02.

the first round before Dennis hit back with a 145 check-out and a 3-2

:49:03.:49:10.

win. James Wade will love you for reminding him of that! Of course he

:49:11.:49:11.

will. That was 2003 for Dennis Harbour.

:49:12.:49:35.

His only other appearance he lost to Mervyn King in round two, and in

:49:36.:49:45.

2006, he met another qualifier in Klaasen Anna Laird before Klaasen

:49:46.:49:53.

came back. -- and he was leading before Klaasen came back.

:49:54.:50:00.

He has a chance to clean out this set now.

:50:01.:50:16.

Not this time. But Fitton is a long way back.

:50:17.:50:25.

OK, for the set. Still no finish for Fitton. Not under pressure, really.

:50:26.:51:01.

Fitton should have been in the position to take this leg, but he

:51:02.:51:06.

has played scrappy darts. It could be a little bit too much,

:51:07.:51:18.

too late. And here he goes.

:51:19.:51:23.

That is three missed set darts, but not four. Fitton needs to get back

:51:24.:51:41.

to where he was in the first set, when he averaged about 102.

:51:42.:51:52.

Dennis Harbour's wife is watching on.

:51:53.:52:13.

She would not have enjoyed that visit.

:52:14.:52:21.

Fitton trying to grit his teeth and get back to where he was. He cannot

:52:22.:52:31.

afford to lose this opening leg. Having to work his way along the

:52:32.:52:33.

oche. It makes it harder still. Harbour likes it harder. It was a

:52:34.:52:50.

great last dart. Threading it through the eye of the needle. Into

:52:51.:52:56.

the lipstick. And this is better from Darryl Fitton. The Dazzler has

:52:57.:52:58.

some of his sparkle back. 179 Darryl will need when he comes

:52:59.:53:14.

back. Harbour, that was a prosaic visit to the oche. Plenty to work

:53:15.:53:27.

with after that good first dart. Coming down the board beautifully.

:53:28.:53:40.

Harbour playing his fourth match in the World Championships 80 Lakeside,

:53:41.:53:51.

Dennis Harbour. Darryl is playing his 28th.

:53:52.:54:02.

That might have looked routine, but after throwing so badly in the

:54:03.:54:09.

second set, Fitton will be feeling better about having that one in the

:54:10.:54:17.

bag. We will be seeing a little emotion from Dennis Harbour, since

:54:18.:54:27.

he won that second set. But it is more disappointment.

:54:28.:54:29.

Fitton will be looking to jump all over this.

:54:30.:54:50.

That represented a chance missed from Fitton. Harbour against

:54:51.:54:59.

struggling to find the treble until the last.... A cracking last dart.

:55:00.:55:04.

He would have been feeling the pressure.

:55:05.:55:18.

From here, neither player can afford a quiet period like Darryl had in

:55:19.:55:27.

the last set. Frankly, it is the best of three. You can be out before

:55:28.:55:31.

you know it. Another poor visit from Harbour.

:55:32.:55:44.

That was unlucky. Three good darts and they all went above the wire. 18

:55:45.:55:55.

darts 80 the board in this leg and only one treble.

:55:56.:56:12.

Precious conspire on the big stage. Neither player seizing the

:56:13.:56:20.

advantage. The worst leg of the match so far by a distance.

:56:21.:56:26.

Where has it gone wrong, he said to himself.

:56:27.:56:40.

27 thrown in this leg and still the one treble. But that was better from

:56:41.:57:01.

Darryl Fitton. After what has gone before he will take 100, but it did

:57:02.:57:03.

not leave him on a finish. 88 for Harbour to square up the

:57:04.:57:38.

match. Fitton on a potential two darts 80 a potential check-out. --

:57:39.:57:48.

to a potential check-out. Big pressure and big response.

:57:49.:57:55.

What an awful leg but a great finish! Exactly what I was going to

:57:56.:58:04.

save. Great finish, terrible leg. -- to say.

:58:05.:58:18.

It is still dead level. Fitted with the slight advantage by the fact he

:58:19.:58:22.

has two throw. That was a steady start from Darryl

:58:23.:58:39.

Fitton. The first week of January every year

:58:40.:58:56.

since 2003. Darryl has been here, he has been competing on the stage. He

:58:57.:59:01.

has lost in round one more often than not but has reached two

:59:02.:59:05.

semifinals, he has reached quarterfinals, including last year

:59:06.:59:10.

when he lost 5-2 to Glenn Durrant, our top seed this year. On the same

:59:11.:59:15.

day in 2003, Dennis Harbour made his debut, but he has only been back

:59:16.:59:18.

once since, in 2006. That keeps him in contention. And

:59:19.:59:37.

Fitton trying to rediscover the power scoring of the first set.

:59:38.:59:50.

That was his fifth 140 plus. His average was 80 105 80 one point but

:59:51.:59:57.

has plummeted to 93, but still ahead of Harbour in terms of scoring.

:59:58.:00:06.

Double 10 now, double 5. Missed it by a distance. This would sting. He

:00:07.:00:27.

can't now having missed the treble 20.

:00:28.:00:38.

One, double two. He got there in the end. 2-1 up. Maintaining his

:00:39.:00:47.

advantage. A dead leg this. -- big. end. 2-1 up. Maintaining his

:00:48.:00:58.

Dennis Harbour you feel must hold. The first to three sets, to

:00:59.:01:13.

determine who has the first throw it can be so important and if it all

:01:14.:01:22.

goes with darts then Fitton has the advantage having the first darts of

:01:23.:01:23.

the match. Number seven seed this year. The

:01:24.:01:48.

same side of the draw as the defending champion Scott Mitchell

:01:49.:01:49.

and Martin Adams. He seems to have slowed down a bit

:01:50.:02:19.

Harbour, has lost his momentum and rhythm a little bit. Let's face it,

:02:20.:02:23.

he was never quick. Darryl doing enough so far. Hot work

:02:24.:02:50.

out there for the players today, capacity crowd, Harbour looking for

:02:51.:02:55.

a maximum but the 140 keeps him in contention. That is his 10th.

:02:56.:03:09.

That is disappointing, that single five, it means Dennis Harbour has

:03:10.:03:24.

six darts from 196 to level the set. What a great opportunity then. Still

:03:25.:03:38.

to darts away. -- two. How much pressure can Fitton put on that 56?

:03:39.:03:44.

Not a great deal, he would have hoped for more than that. Fitton

:03:45.:03:48.

effectively serving this out, that was a least one. You have 49 Dennis.

:03:49.:03:57.

Just checking with the scorer. Topps now, one dart at it. Just snatched

:03:58.:04:09.

at it. A chance now for Darryl Fitton to make the sets. 14 for

:04:10.:04:19.

Topps. This is set point -- tops. And there it is.

:04:20.:04:28.

A big big check out in the context of the match. Dennis Harbour still

:04:29.:04:38.

with the darts but Fitton is a set away from a place in the second

:04:39.:04:46.

round. And that is where missing big 16 hurt Dennis Harbour. He should

:04:47.:04:53.

have had to darts at double Topps but because he strayed into the

:04:54.:04:59.

seven, he only had one hand Darryl Fitton showed all of his experience

:05:00.:05:07.

-- tops. Whoever wins this faces a potential match in the next round

:05:08.:05:09.

against the world champion Martin Phillips. Or David Cameron from

:05:10.:05:14.

Canada or one, Mr Ted Hankey. His trademark bowtie, the flag of St

:05:15.:05:41.

George. He has done his refereeing this afternoon has Nick. Oh dear.

:05:42.:05:57.

That is not what Harbour required of what could be the decisive set. A

:05:58.:06:03.

big score for Fitton here, can he punishing? That is good, could do

:06:04.:06:10.

with another. He got another but not quite in the right bed. Still, he is

:06:11.:06:16.

nearly 100 a head. -- ahead. Finally find a treble, Dennis

:06:17.:06:32.

Harbour but Fitton has stolen the darts. Straight back in the red.

:06:33.:06:53.

Dennis supporters are starting to see it slip away, no finish, neither

:06:54.:07:02.

for Fitton but he will have first crack.

:07:03.:07:15.

He will be cross with himself Darryl Fitton but Dennis Harbour back on

:07:16.:07:32.

186. Good from Harbour, 140, would hope to be closer to the mark than

:07:33.:07:39.

he is, going for two treble 19 's and a double tops. Cannot be done

:07:40.:07:53.

now, hast to re-competes. -- has to re-computer. Tops. Harbour gets away

:07:54.:07:59.

with it. And doesn't Fitton know it. Bell Darryl under pressure throwing

:08:00.:08:34.

first, -- now. Dennis Harbour, the Harbour lights still burning

:08:35.:08:34.

brightly after that last leg. That is more like it, great first

:08:35.:08:54.

darts, fill them up. His fourth maximum. Superb first darts gave

:08:55.:08:57.

that opportunity. Harbour in the must win situation

:08:58.:09:15.

and Fitton with the throw here. Looking pretty for this leg.

:09:16.:09:39.

Good. And again. Not bad following on from the 180 earlier stop from

:09:40.:10:05.

the 1920s to the treble 20s. Fitton 17 now to square off the set, his

:10:06.:10:12.

fifth of the match, 12 would leave tops. Now he has double 8. A wry

:10:13.:10:22.

smile from Dennis. You just get the feeling that Darryl

:10:23.:10:34.

is really enjoying himself now. I think you would like to see it

:10:35.:10:40.

finished. He was flying in the first set, there has been a time since

:10:41.:10:49.

where it has been a bit off, the standard droppings and at time way

:10:50.:10:55.

way down but that is more like it. A good start to the lake. It seems

:10:56.:11:01.

both players when they are finding big numbers they by finding them.

:11:02.:11:05.

And when the missing by both missing. So often the case in this

:11:06.:11:11.

game, they feed off each other, goodness knows what he's feeding

:11:12.:11:20.

off. It is very black and white isn't its? The first to three sets

:11:21.:11:25.

goes through and at the moment Darryl Fitton is two legs away.

:11:26.:11:37.

Surprised they didn't come down to the 19 's then, he is blocked for

:11:38.:11:46.

the treble 20 and Fitton can make him pay maybe, another one would

:11:47.:11:56.

hurt. Darryl's wife watching on intently.

:11:57.:12:02.

Crystal will know that if Darryl can win this leg, he'll be sitting very

:12:03.:12:18.

pretty with the darts, two legs from now. A loose last darts, he was in a

:12:19.:12:25.

great position there but Harbour, he will want to take this out. Treble

:12:26.:12:31.

19 would leave him double 12. Missed it by a distance. 95. Looking at the

:12:32.:12:47.

bull. Bouncing out. All about the 19 's now. Five are needed. I bet you

:12:48.:12:56.

Bobby George will be saying that is what happens when you go for bull.

:12:57.:13:10.

Tops. Harbour edges ahead once more in this set, it's looked as though

:13:11.:13:14.

he would lose it but Fitton couldn't I. Looks a different player on

:13:15.:13:22.

double tops when he has two for it. In the third set when he missed the

:13:23.:13:29.

big 16 and left themselves the one at double tops, a couple of times in

:13:30.:13:33.

this set he has found himself to an found themselves the middle of the

:13:34.:13:37.

top bed with his first darts. -- himself in the middle.

:13:38.:13:50.

Needs this to square up the set once more and then potentially be one leg

:13:51.:14:04.

away from a place in the next round. Nice, asks the question of Dennis

:14:05.:14:10.

Harbour. What have you got? So far not a treble. Needs a stepladder to

:14:11.:14:17.

get over those, he will have to move. Fitton firmly in control as a

:14:18.:14:24.

result of that, you would think that we have said that before. And that

:14:25.:14:30.

leaves him on a finish. His highest ever checkout was 164 in

:14:31.:14:45.

his debut match in 2000 and through when he lost 3-1 to John Burden.

:14:46.:15:02.

Fitton will get aid of a chance. That was a good last dart, but a

:15:03.:15:09.

shabby second. Jim Williams had a 140 check-out

:15:10.:15:28.

earlier on, that is the best we have seen so far.

:15:29.:15:46.

This will be some way to take out the set and take us into a decider.

:15:47.:16:05.

This is probably a must take for Fitton.

:16:06.:16:20.

Back on level terms. Hard work, but he has got there. And now Harbour

:16:21.:16:32.

knows he simply has too win this leg, or it is goodbye, thank you

:16:33.:16:36.

very much, I have done my best and Darryl Fitton will be through. I

:16:37.:16:40.

tell you what, this is good fun. It is tight.

:16:41.:16:47.

A great start from the Harbour Master.

:16:48.:17:04.

Just a reminder, if it goes to a deciding set, from 2-2, you must win

:17:05.:17:18.

by two clear legs. From 5-5, it is sudden death. One..., closest to the

:17:19.:17:24.

bull starts us off and whoever wins that leg goes through. But that is a

:17:25.:17:29.

long way off. I was going to say, it is a long way.

:17:30.:17:48.

There was ironic cheering because it took him so long to find his flight.

:17:49.:17:55.

And this is a terrific visit from Fitton. Almost as good as it gets.

:17:56.:18:03.

And it keeps him in touch. Whose nerve will hold? It is squeaky

:18:04.:18:17.

bottom time as a certain Scotsman used to say.

:18:18.:18:25.

So far, Dennis Harbour's nerve is holding very nicely indeed, thank

:18:26.:18:26.

you. Two visits at 140. He found the trouble with his

:18:27.:18:39.

last.... It was 60, wasn't it? That was unlucky. It does not count.

:18:40.:19:11.

You are right, he did not find the treble, so 81.

:19:12.:19:26.

He has left in Darryl Fitton. But it is a big ask. This for the match.

:19:27.:19:42.

Harbour breathes again. Daughter Debbie cannot watch.

:19:43.:19:52.

He has done it! He has done it. And we are going all the way. This has

:19:53.:20:13.

turned out to be a real scrap. It has an attritional feel about it. He

:20:14.:20:24.

is not a happy boy. He will be thinking, I should have put him away

:20:25.:20:30.

by now. He did not miss a dart for it, though. You cannot change

:20:31.:20:35.

history, but you can change the future.

:20:36.:20:48.

I think that is Dennis's some on the left. And Bobby on the right and mum

:20:49.:21:26.

Lana in the middle. The family tree has worked out. Darryl Fitton trying

:21:27.:21:31.

to moving towards winning this particular leg, and moving closer.

:21:32.:21:41.

How he needs to hold onto his throw. Check-out percentages have been

:21:42.:21:47.

decent. They have, anything over 50% is excellent. And 45% from the

:21:48.:21:59.

Harbour Master, not too shabby. Good darts.

:22:00.:22:16.

That was poor from Harbour. 90 for the opening leg of this deciding

:22:17.:22:23.

set. What was that third dart about, he

:22:24.:23:04.

says. The gesture said it all. Still, he would take 125. Not

:23:05.:23:07.

exactly doing cartwheels. Steady again. He will feel he cannot

:23:08.:23:41.

lose this leg, Dennis Harbour. He will not do if Darryl keeps putting

:23:42.:23:43.

them in there. There is not a lot to choose between

:23:44.:23:56.

them in terms of big hits. Harbour may be the slight advantage but the

:23:57.:24:04.

higher average is with Fitton. 89 as opposed to 85, at this stage. Fitted

:24:05.:24:21.

is miles back. -- Fitton. Forget Harbour, it was Fitton who was all

:24:22.:24:30.

at sea on that visit. Yet to break 300 in this leg. He has already had

:24:31.:24:35.

nine darts. Inching rather than racing towards

:24:36.:24:53.

the targets. Darryl needs to start finding trebles he is annoyed with

:24:54.:25:01.

himself. He has not been put off by something in the crowd, he is trying

:25:02.:25:03.

to concentrate and refocus. Fitton's poor scoring is costing him

:25:04.:25:33.

dear. Martin Adams is in action before too long. He looks a bit like

:25:34.:25:40.

him, doesn't he? It is not the great man, I hasten to add. And still they

:25:41.:25:49.

cannot be separated. Maybe that sudden death, which I pooh-poohed a

:25:50.:25:56.

few moments ago, maybe it will come to that. It is not Martin Adams. It

:25:57.:26:08.

is a mini Martin. It is a wolf cub! At two apiece and one apiece in

:26:09.:26:52.

legs, there is no room for error. Still next to nothing between them.

:26:53.:27:00.

Harbour with his nose ahead but nothing significant.

:27:01.:27:07.

That was quality from Fitton. Gosh, did he need that!

:27:08.:27:25.

For a first-round match this has turned out to be a right royal

:27:26.:27:28.

battle. He should have set that up. They

:27:29.:27:43.

were a couple of shockers. He did well to step away from the oche and

:27:44.:27:49.

refocus. And he is not on a finish. Advantage, Harbour.

:27:50.:28:04.

Fitton feeling the pressure? He will be now. Just 45 required for taking

:28:05.:28:16.

a leg against the throw for Harbour. Fitton can do no more than Hammer

:28:17.:28:19.

the big scores, which he does brilliantly.

:28:20.:28:25.

He has left himself in the madhouse if he comes back. You could say

:28:26.:28:38.

maybe it was not the right dart. He has had success with tops and he has

:28:39.:28:44.

had again and that will hurt Fitton. Harbour has the darts and can take

:28:45.:28:47.

this match out. With the darts for the match. Only

:28:48.:29:09.

55 from Dennis Harbour, who looked so unflappable throughout. The crowd

:29:10.:29:15.

are absolutely with this one. I think many of them would love to see

:29:16.:29:22.

Fitton bounce back. That was a good effort.

:29:23.:29:36.

The tension is palpable. He found the treble bed. He needed that,

:29:37.:29:51.

Dennis Harbour. Darryl Fitton must break to stay in the match.

:29:52.:30:05.
