We'll offer our own tribute

to come. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05

Last Monday we brought the news that
Stoke City had appointed | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
Paul Lambert as their new manager. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:46
Paul Lambert as their new manager. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:46
Later that night, he
watched his new side | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
from the stands at Old Trafford. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:54
COMMENTATOR: Stoke have taken six
points off Manchester United since | 0:02:54 | 0:02:59
Jose Mourinho's appointment. They
very often raise their game against | 0:02:59 | 0:03:05
today's opponents. Paul Lambert is
watching tonight before he takes | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
control. Loads of space for Antonio
Valencia, his left foot, into the | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
back of the net!
Manchester United score. And already | 0:03:14 | 0:03:21
he has to see how his team perform
being behind in the game. The | 0:03:21 | 0:03:28
Manchester United goal is leading a
charmed life here, attempt from | 0:03:28 | 0:03:36
Choupo-Moting. 2-0 to Manchester
United! Anthony Martial. Brilliant | 0:03:36 | 0:03:43
saved by David de Gea! Anthony
Martial know into the box, could | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
have been a handball from Lukaku.
It's a goal for Romelu Lukaku. Job | 0:03:47 | 0:03:57
done by Jose Mourinho's team. And it
is no buck to the trend that has | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
seen Stoke in the relegation zone. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:09
is no buck to the trend that has
seen Stoke in the relegation zone. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:09
Thank you to all those shouting at
their television and these two have | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
been shouting as well. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:13
So a 13th defeat of
the season for Stoke. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:15
It's a big task for the new man. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
Paul Lambert has been
talking to Mark Clemmit. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:25
How are you? Good. Beautiful. Are
you | 0:04:27 | 0:04:38 | |
you cold?
No. You have slightly more hair than | 0:04:38 | 0:04:44
me. I have seen how well you have
worked. Is this a chat up line? Are | 0:04:44 | 0:04:49
you ready to immerse yourself right
back in this torture chamber again? | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
It does things with people. Yes, but
I think it is great. It is what I | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
have done for all my days, really,
and it is great. I never thought I | 0:04:58 | 0:05:03
would get the opportunity,
especially with the Premier League | 0:05:03 | 0:05:05
club. If you are a manager, you have
been in there, but to survive in the | 0:05:05 | 0:05:12
Premiership... Did I think this
chance would come? No. When you | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
didn't think you would get a chance
in the Premier League? No. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:25
I think those images of view, on
Match of the Day. It must be | 0:05:25 | 0:05:34
horrendous pressure.
You become somebody you're not, | 0:05:34 | 0:05:37
really, when you stand on that
technical area and things are really | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
going against you and the fans are
calling for you to go, the banners | 0:05:39 | 0:05:44
up, and no matter what you have done
in your own career, it is all over | 0:05:44 | 0:05:49
place at times. The stress on your
brain, thinking how can I win again? | 0:05:49 | 0:05:53
You try to shift it, think of
something else to do, go to 3-4 | 0:05:53 | 0:06:00
systems, five systems. You're
confusing yourself, confusing the | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
players... A solution to join
something around, to survive. That | 0:06:02 | 0:06:09
is what you're trying to do.
COMMENTATOR: Not a great start to | 0:06:09 | 0:06:19
the New Year for Mark Hughes, and
you can see what the supporters | 0:06:19 | 0:06:21
think of it. Charlie, have the
players self analysed what hasn't | 0:06:21 | 0:06:28
happened so far this season? Of
course you do. Especially when you | 0:06:28 | 0:06:33
lose a manager, individually and
collectively you need to know the | 0:06:33 | 0:06:36
reasons why. Let's be honest, and
brutally honest, we have not been | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
good enough, not reaching the levels
we have reached in previous seasons | 0:06:39 | 0:06:43
and unfortunately the manager
carries the can for the whole club. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
I have been through what Mark went
through and I know exactly what it | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
is like. Something different,
whatever it was going to be, either | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
me or somebody else, they needed
something different. I good nucleus | 0:06:53 | 0:07:00
of football this year. Paul Lambert
is the new Stoke City manager, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:06
signing a two and a half year
contract. You just have to... You | 0:07:06 | 0:07:14
got a call to see come in and chat
and the deal was done very quickly? | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
Yes. I knew it was great club, the
Premier League there as well, and a | 0:07:17 | 0:07:26
real talented group here. It never
entered my frame of mind, OK, one | 0:07:26 | 0:07:31
manager has turned it down and so
has another, but... Do you have to | 0:07:31 | 0:07:36
earn your stripes when you go in
there? Do you have to get your tone | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
just right? I think you need to lay
down the law, really. OK, this is | 0:07:41 | 0:07:46
what we are playing, this is what we
want to do, what to achieve. I know | 0:07:46 | 0:07:51
the way we want to play, the system
we want to play and what we want to | 0:07:51 | 0:07:55
try and do, and I have it obviously
planned out, but what the game plan | 0:07:55 | 0:07:59
will be on Saturday... It is just a
matter of trying to choose the right | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
team to win a game. 15 games are
like 15 cup finals I think that we | 0:08:03 | 0:08:09
need to win. What I have seen so
far, there are more than capable of | 0:08:09 | 0:08:13
winning. No doubt in your mind that
Stoke City will be saved this | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
season? None whatsoever, as I talk
to you right now. He is absolutely | 0:08:17 | 0:08:23
clear he does not expect you to get
relegated this season. Is that an | 0:08:23 | 0:08:27
ethos is shared by the squad? Of
course, if you look at the talent we | 0:08:27 | 0:08:31
have. And talent alone does not win
you games, it is hard work that wins | 0:08:31 | 0:08:37
games. We win or lose as a group but
for most importance is we get back | 0:08:37 | 0:08:42
to winning days. If we don't,
everybody knows what will happen. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:47
The game is about winning and I
don't think that should never be | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
taken away from it. You have to win
games, no matter what. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:55
STUDIO: Confidence both from the
manager and Charlie Adam there. | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
Other managers linked with it,
Martin O'Neill, Quique Flores, but | 0:09:00 | 0:09:07
what an opportunity for Paul
Lambert, Kevin? A big opportunity | 0:09:07 | 0:09:14
for him after what happened with
Wolves and Villa, so not last | 0:09:14 | 0:09:22
chance, but he certainly... And he
has the pedigree. He had success | 0:09:22 | 0:09:29
with what he did at Norwich. Has to
learn from his mistakes as well. | 0:09:29 | 0:09:38
Yes, particularly at Villa, where he
had a high budget and a lot of | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
players and it didn't work out for
him. Going in into similar | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
circumstances at Stoke, big budget,
big players on big wages, and he | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
needs to get them all together
quickly. It is quite obvious what he | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
needs to do. They concede more goals
than anyone in the top five leagues | 0:09:52 | 0:09:58
in Europe. He needs to shore them
up. Weirdly, the invested in two | 0:09:58 | 0:10:06
defensive players in the summer,
Kurt Zouma... But when you look at | 0:10:06 | 0:10:14
them defensively, especially against
Manchester United on Monday night, I | 0:10:14 | 0:10:16
thought it was a team issue. I think
that is pretty poor from the | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
left-back personally. The young lad,
give him the benefit of the doubt, | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
he will learn from that, being shown
down the line, but it is not just | 0:10:23 | 0:10:29
individuals. They need to be harder
to beat, Stoke. They seem a little | 0:10:29 | 0:10:33
too easy to play against, and this
came in particular, you can set here | 0:10:33 | 0:10:37
and rave about Manchester United and
I fought they were brilliant and | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
don't want to take anything away
from that, but it also looked really | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
easy. People playing in third gear.
You think that is why he made that | 0:10:43 | 0:10:47
comment in the interview about
laying down the law? An interesting | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
tactic.
It is a fine line. They have had a | 0:10:50 | 0:10:56
pretty low season in terms of morale
at Stoke, a lot of pressure on the | 0:10:56 | 0:11:01
manager, Mark Hughes, and the
players, and I think there needs to | 0:11:01 | 0:11:03
be and not in terms of positivity
and I am sure he will bring that | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
under the training pitch but
obviously the next group of games we | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
have seen just there are vital, that
they get not only draws but also | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
some wins. Look at the three goals
they conceded there. Historically, | 0:11:13 | 0:11:19
how many bodies did Stoke get back
into position? Throwing themselves | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
in front of the ball. They just
didn't have anyone doing that. They | 0:11:22 | 0:11:26
had more than enough bodies back in
position and it was easy for United | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
to score. Perhaps a new manager can
make that subtle change. What about | 0:11:30 | 0:11:35
Huddersfield? Talking about the big
period for Stoke, but crucial for | 0:11:35 | 0:11:42
them as well. They can't slow down
and be petrified of relegation. They | 0:11:42 | 0:11:47
are only four point ahead of Stoke
and what a difference it will make | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
to Stoke if they win the game, but
you think, yes, of wins, it is a | 0:11:51 | 0:11:57
vital period for them. If they are
conceding like the Adebayor, they | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
will be in trouble. We are all in
our little summer shorts. Shall we | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
see how cold it was for this one... | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
Manchester United saw
off Stoke on Monday. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:09
Today, they are at Burnley. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
Jonathan Pearce will be commentating
on this one for Match of the Day. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
Give an update is not just on the
hat, but on what we know about | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
Alexis Sanchez? And getting ready
for rush. With my geographic ability | 0:12:19 | 0:12:24
no doubt I will end up in Siberia,
and if I end up there, it is for | 0:12:24 | 0:12:30
sure that I will be taking Kilbane
with me. Alexis Sanchez said goodbye | 0:12:30 | 0:12:36
to the Arsenal players last night,
and we think the deal will be done | 0:12:36 | 0:12:42
in the next 24 hours. Mkhitaryan's
deal will be done separately. Very | 0:12:42 | 0:12:49
differently because of the fees and
agents involved, but he should be an | 0:12:49 | 0:12:54
Arsenal player again in the next two
days. He said his goodbyes to the | 0:12:54 | 0:12:58
Manchester United players yesterday
I gather as well. Arsenal's next | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
plan will be to confirm the deal
with Aubameyang who was left out of | 0:13:02 | 0:13:10
the Borussia Dortmund squad for the
last game, but I think all those | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
details will be confirmed on Monday.
Thank you. Just to give our viewers | 0:13:14 | 0:13:19
one last lingering look at your hat.
If you can stay down the camera, | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
beautiful. The Phil Davy Crockett! | 0:13:22 | 0:13:31
-- The full Davy Crockett! | 0:13:31 | 0:13:32
Well, like Manchester United,
Chelsea are intent on securing | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
their top four position,
but it was FA Cup action | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
for the Blues on Wednesday night
as the Canaries came to town. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
It was all about
reviewing the reviews. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:41
COMMENTATOR: Fourth in the Premier
League meets 13th in the | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
Championship and we will have a
result tonight. Danny Drinkwater | 0:13:43 | 0:13:48
going for goal, slamming the
crossbar. Just off the top of the | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
bar! He finds the back of the net,
Batshuayi! It is in! They have | 0:13:51 | 0:13:59
equalised, right at the end of the
game. Lewis has | 0:13:59 | 0:14:04
equalised, right at the end of the
game. Lewis has got it! Norwich City | 0:14:04 | 0:14:04
will be looking forward to the next
30 minutes. Entered Bakayoko, | 0:14:04 | 0:14:09
brilliant play. Goes down inside the
box and the referee does not give | 0:14:09 | 0:14:15
the penalty, given the other way. No
sign at the moment... We think it is | 0:14:15 | 0:14:22
a clear obvious penalty. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:28
a clear obvious penalty. Challenged
by Pedro. Already booked and he will | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
be sent off. Morato, under pressure,
goes down, no penalty, a free kick | 0:14:32 | 0:14:43
and Morato gets the yellow card
within his face. Norwich City have | 0:14:43 | 0:14:48
taken the champions Chelsea to
penalties. Norwich City, saved! By | 0:14:48 | 0:14:55
the Argentinian! Hazard strokes at
home! Finally, Chelsea prevail. | 0:14:55 | 0:15:04
So Chelsea squeak through,
but no Pedro or Morata | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
for them today at Brighton,
and Simon Brotherton has | 0:15:06 | 0:15:08
rest of the team news. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:14
Plenty of team used to get through
here, six changes for Chelsea from | 0:15:14 | 0:15:19
Wednesday night, although Caballero
stays in goal because Thibaut | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
Courtois has turned an ankle in
training. Still no Fabregas Gary | 0:15:21 | 0:15:26
Cahill with injury. Andreas
Christensen and Antonio Rudiger | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
replace David Luiz and Ethan Ampadu
at the back. N'Golo Kante returns in | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
place of Danny Drinkwater in
midfield. Both regular wingback | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
scumbag into the team, Marcos Alonso
on the left, Victor Moses on the | 0:15:36 | 0:15:41
right and Eden Hazard starts in
place of Pedro further forward. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:45
Write and make five changes as they
go to a back three, Conor Goldson | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
coming in, Markus Suttner and
Schelotto the wingbacks, Solly March | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
starting and the attack is led by
Tomer Hemed with Glenn Murray | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
dropped to the bench, as if
Izquierdo. | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
We will look through those sites,
Chelsea with a couple of changes, | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
Batshuayi upfront and Ross Barkley
on the bench. I wanted to talk to | 0:16:07 | 0:16:12
you about VAR because it has been a
hot topic. We mulled weave onto the | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
game later. Antonio Conte has voiced
some concerns. You were at the game. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:21
What I find surprising is that Mike
Jones, who was the man watching it, | 0:16:21 | 0:16:25
did not seem to watch it from the
right angle, the Willian incident, | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
or at the right speed to make a
decision. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
or at the right speed to make a
decision. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
It seems Mike Jones having to
operate the system on his own is not | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
the way | 0:16:38 | 0:16:39
operate the system on his own is not
the way forward. It feels like they | 0:16:39 | 0:16:40
may need a professional operator to
keep up with the speed of being able | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
to make the decision and give them
enough angle to make the right | 0:16:43 | 0:16:47
decision. Obviously, I did the
commentary on the day and I felt it | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
was clear as day it was a penalty.
The fact that they did not seem to | 0:16:50 | 0:16:56
review it. You know, it was not
clear to anyone in the stadium that | 0:16:56 | 0:17:01
we have reviewed it and we are still
saying we don't think it is a | 0:17:01 | 0:17:04
penalty which would have infuriated
people even more. That was really | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
confusing side of things. I think we
have to be careful because it is | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
still in a trial phase and you don't
want to start destroying it because | 0:17:12 | 0:17:16
I think it will be good for the game
eventually. But when things like | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
that happen, it really knocks you
for six. I suppose that is the | 0:17:19 | 0:17:25
problem. And it is annoying because
the technology is there and we saw | 0:17:25 | 0:17:29
it the previous night at the King
Power when Kelechi Iheanacho's | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
second goal was rightly given. It
was and I thought he was offside | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
initially and it was a good decision
but once it was reviewed, it was | 0:17:37 | 0:17:42
Nathan Pond's trailing leg that kept
Iheanacho onside. I think it was | 0:17:42 | 0:17:48
done in under 70 seconds and I
thought Jon Moss is did brilliantly, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
bided his time, waited and he did
not even go to the site to review it | 0:17:51 | 0:17:56
himself he was told from up above it
was clearly on-site and gave the | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
goal, it was handled perfectly and
brilliantly and there was tension in | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
the stadium around it but I thought
it was brilliantly handled and | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
worked so well and that man Jon Moss
handle did brilliantly. No | 0:18:05 | 0:18:09
complaints at the King Power on
Tuesday but I was watching the game | 0:18:09 | 0:18:13
on Wednesday night when Jermaine was
commentating and Jermaine had it | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
within two replays, two or three,
maximum, he knew it was a | 0:18:17 | 0:18:28
maximum, he knew it was a penalty
and that was why we were watching | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
it, going "It's a penalty, why
hasn't it been given?" We should not | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
moan to much because it is for games | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
hasn't it been given?" We should not
moan to much because it is for games | 0:18:34 | 0:18:34
in and it will get better. A quick
word on Peter Grant potentially | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
cajoled the question mark they gone
to review. Don't get me wrong, I | 0:18:37 | 0:18:39
thought it was a weird one when I
woke up and heard about it! It seems | 0:18:39 | 0:18:43
Antonio Conte wants a plan B. He has
highlighted taller players to fit | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
the mould. Andy Carroll, Peter
Crouch. I've played with Peter | 0:18:45 | 0:18:52
Crouch and for me, he's as good as
it gets when it comes to plan B. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
It's not a long-term situation, big
contract anything. I'm sure it will | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
be short-term, for Antonio Conte to
have another option in the next few | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
months. Let's look at the Brighton
team. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:10 | |
Five changes today, and I was going
to ask you, Kevin change to this is | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
more personal, do they bring someone
in and last night they signed Jurgen | 0:19:14 | 0:19:19
Locaydia, £14 million, not available
today but is it the right time of | 0:19:19 | 0:19:22
the season to have a change? I think
Chris Hughton has recognised they | 0:19:22 | 0:19:26
need a freshen up, like we said
about Huddersfield earlier, they are | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
in a position where it is tipping
one way or another. What does he do? | 0:19:29 | 0:19:34
He's gone out and signed striker
because they need goals, they are | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
solid and difficult to play against,
they don't concede too many but now | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
suddenly they are in a position by
signing of striker where they have | 0:19:41 | 0:19:45
more firepower. These are the set
pieces they conceded against West | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
Brom last weekend. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
That's one of eight games today. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:53
Tomorrow's sole offering sees
Southampton face Spurs. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:55
Christian Eriksen has been a key man
for Tottenham again this season | 0:19:55 | 0:19:58
and he sat down this week
with Karthi Gnanasegaram. | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
Christian Eriksen! It's in!
Absolutely brilliant goal from | 0:20:05 | 0:20:10
Eriksen! Christian Eriksen! That was
smashed in. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:16
Eriksen! Christian Eriksen! That was
smashed in. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
You already know 2018 will be
exciting of the pitch. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
Congratulations to you and Sabrina.
You have spoken to Harry Kane who's | 0:20:22 | 0:20:25
had a new baby as well. Of course,
we spoke to a lot of people who had | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
babies, trying to learn stuff from
them and see what they do but you | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
what to do it in your own way as
well and you don't know what it is | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
before it is so there's not much to
ask. A big year on the pitch as | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
well, a World | 0:20:39 | 0:20:49
well, a World Cup year for you, nine
goals in nine games for Denmark in | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
2017 including a hat-trick against
Ireland to get to Russia. For you, | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
what does it mean to play in a World
Cup again? It will be very special | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
and a big difference compared to the
first time when I played one or two | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
games before I went to the World Cup
so it was a bit of a quick one. I | 0:21:00 | 0:21:04
was a young guy trying to keep my
level up to the highest level and | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
now I'm there is so for me
personally, and for the team, it | 0:21:06 | 0:21:09
will be a different experience going
there. Now I'm 26 and I'm looking | 0:21:09 | 0:21:12
forward to it. You were not the
youngest boy at the 2010 World Cup | 0:21:12 | 0:21:16
at the time. There was a lot of
pressure then. You're now the | 0:21:16 | 0:21:20
talisman for Denmark. What is the
pressure like now and how do you | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
cope with it? The pressure back then
was more open, to show yourself to | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
the world and to everyone that you
can play. Now it is about keeping | 0:21:28 | 0:21:33
the ability and being an important
man for the team, like you said, and | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
for the country. It is two different
stories, from one who just came to | 0:21:36 | 0:21:42
watch and now you are one who can't
even believe it has been eight years | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
since the last time. It has gone
quick. Eriksen! It is in. Harry | 0:21:45 | 0:21:51
Kane. Son Square, 2-0. Great goal.
4-0. Son Heung-min. Harry Kane has | 0:21:51 | 0:21:57
done it! Great game at the weekend.
It will be different compared to the | 0:21:57 | 0:22:04
first one because they probably
don't want to get beaten as big as | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
they did last time so it will be a
different game to watch. You had | 0:22:07 | 0:22:12
such a good run of form that that
was after what was not a great | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
November. Has anything switched over
in his last period? Not really, even | 0:22:16 | 0:22:21
the big games in November, we always
had a lot of shots, created a lot of | 0:22:21 | 0:22:26
chances but we didn't score. Now it
is the difference, the ball goes in | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
the goal a bit easier, the game is a
bit more open and it gives us a bit | 0:22:30 | 0:22:35
more confidence going into the game
that we know we will score two or | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
three. That is just is. You go on
some good games and bad games and | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
you are trying to keep the good
memories on top of everything and | 0:22:42 | 0:22:45
really just keep improving when you
do it. Like I said, we are on a good | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
run but it is only the start. It
will be a long one. With a group of | 0:22:49 | 0:22:53
players that quite clearly from
watching get on very well, is their | 0:22:53 | 0:22:57
role so the idea you want to win a
trophy together? I think every team | 0:22:57 | 0:23:02
has it. Every team wants to win
something. Some of them are lucky | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
enough to get a trophy or a few
more. Of course, we have not had | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
anything at Spurs. It will be new
for us to be in that position. We | 0:23:09 | 0:23:13
have been close, lost a final of
course but getting there will be a | 0:23:13 | 0:23:19
big step for us and I'm sure we will
keep the level up that we did the | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
last three seasons and hopefully be
a trophy again, yes. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:28
A big year in store for Christian
Eriksen on and off the pitch. He | 0:23:28 | 0:23:33
dropped the T bomb, trophy, there.
This site had a blip around | 0:23:33 | 0:23:36
November, really good over Christmas
and New Year but unless they win | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
some silverware, will everyone
always said they were good but what | 0:23:40 | 0:23:42
did they win? They will do, simple
as that. That is getting thrown at | 0:23:42 | 0:23:48
them on a daily basis even now. They
are that good as the team, the | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
manager is fantastic and there is
just this one thing everyone is | 0:23:52 | 0:23:56
waiting for. Individually, they
could all come you know, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
waiting for. Individually, they
could all come you know, we have | 0:23:58 | 0:23:59
seen with Kyle Walker, looks like he
will go to Manchester City and win | 0:23:59 | 0:24:03
another trophy, they have started to
put in the performances as we saw | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
last week against Everton, they were
phenomenal in this game but I think | 0:24:06 | 0:24:11
the most important thing that is in
these players' mind is they have | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
been together for so long now, they
want to win something together. It's | 0:24:14 | 0:24:19
going off on your own to bigger
clubs in winning silverware which | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
they are all capable of doing but
doing it together with this manager | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
in this moment, when they all feel
they deserve it is what will be | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
really special. But how long can it
last? That is the question. They | 0:24:28 | 0:24:34
will lose players, I suppose, which
is part of the issue and the longer | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
you go without a trophy, the more
pressure it puts on you. But they | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
are good enough to cross the line. I
suppose they need a bit of luck | 0:24:40 | 0:24:45
along the way to get themselves into
another final oral final. New | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
stadium on the Wes Welker exciting
times for Spurs but everyone is | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
crying out for the silverware. In
Southampton this weekend, no wins in | 0:24:53 | 0:24:58
ten. We have got relative positions
after this number of games in the | 0:24:58 | 0:25:03
last six seasons. Most times we say
they sell their best players but the | 0:25:03 | 0:25:06
model works. Could this be the
season that it fails them? I've been | 0:25:06 | 0:25:11
to watch Southampton a few times
this season and it's becoming a bit | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
lifeless, watching them. There's no
sort of excitement watching them | 0:25:15 | 0:25:19
like there has been in the past and
that is where, if you asked the | 0:25:19 | 0:25:22
question, do you feel as though the
model can continue, it always seems | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
it will come to an end eventually.
That is just doable. You can't keep | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
doing it. How sustainable is it?
That is the thing. Personally, | 0:25:29 | 0:25:34
watching them, I think they will be
in trouble to the end of the season | 0:25:34 | 0:25:40
because I feel as though there is no
spark watching them. They are going | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
to Spurs tomorrow, Spurs are playing
against a side where you feel they | 0:25:43 | 0:25:45
could go there and hurt them badly
with the players they have got. I | 0:25:45 | 0:25:48
worry for Southampton. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:50
Well, if Southampton and Spurs can
tomorrow produce anything half | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
as good as the game at Anfield last
Sunday, then Match of the Day 2 | 0:25:54 | 0:26:01
This could be an epic game of
attack, attack, attack. Good run by | 0:26:01 | 0:26:07
Oxlade-Chamberlain, goes for it and
scores! Liverpool lead! Leroy Sane | 0:26:07 | 0:26:12
scores! Great equaliser from
Manchester City. Delph! Flicks the | 0:26:12 | 0:26:19
bar. Firmino, no foul! It is
curling! It is in! Mane! He's hit | 0:26:19 | 0:26:25
the post. A let off for City. Mane.
This time, he scores! Listened to | 0:26:25 | 0:26:33
the noise! Mo Salah, does he go for
it? He does and he has scored! | 0:26:33 | 0:26:41
Anfield is shaking. Manchester City
are rocking. Aguero, beautifully | 0:26:41 | 0:26:50
played, gun began, good block,
Bernardo Silva scores for Manchester | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
City. 4-2. Gunn began, dangerous,
goal! 4-3. If Manchester City get | 0:26:53 | 0:27:00
out of here unbeaten, it will be
practically miraculous. Manchester | 0:27:00 | 0:27:05
City free kick. This is going to be
interesting. Kevin De Bruyne's bull | 0:27:05 | 0:27:12
in! The flag was up anyway. City are
beaten for the first time in the | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
Premier League this season. Their
dirty game league unbeaten run has | 0:27:17 | 0:27:21
come to an end. -- 30 game. That was
a proper game of | 0:27:21 | 0:27:27
come to an end. -- 30 game. That was
a proper game of football. Do you | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
think, people have talked about
Manchester City losing for the first | 0:27:30 | 0:27:32
time | 0:27:32 | 0:27:33 | |
Manchester City losing for the first
time and have Liverpool fan some | 0:27:33 | 0:27:34
frailties or was it one of those
games when everything that could | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
have gone wrong for Manchester City
did? I think Liverpool can do this | 0:27:37 | 0:27:41
to anyone in Europe when they are at
it and the stadium has that type of | 0:27:41 | 0:27:47
atmosphere, anyone could rock up to
Anfield and ship for goals. Yes, | 0:27:47 | 0:27:51
City makes some big mistakes which
we have not seen this year but let's | 0:27:51 | 0:27:55
not forget, Liverpool still had to
score four to win a game at home and | 0:27:55 | 0:27:59
it nearly still didn't quite go
their way. It's one of the best | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
games of football I've seen in a
long time. I absolutely loved it but | 0:28:01 | 0:28:05
it felt like a one-off to me. City
still showed so much character and | 0:28:05 | 0:28:10
spirit to get into it even after big
mistakes from Ederson, just like | 0:28:10 | 0:28:14
that. But Liverpool, what a
performance. Like I said, they will | 0:28:14 | 0:28:18
do that to anyone, I really believe
it. Mo Salah scores again. Klopp has | 0:28:18 | 0:28:24
confirmed Loris Karius as his number
one so does that mean he will not | 0:28:24 | 0:28:28
strengthen in that position and
stick by him? He clearly needs to. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:33
Either goalkeeper, you can't be
convinced by. Personally, I think | 0:28:33 | 0:28:37
this is a mistake, a good strike
from Leroy Sane but I think it's a | 0:28:37 | 0:28:41
mistake. This has happened regularly
with Liverpool. They were so | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
dominant in the first half, they
could have been two or three up and | 0:28:44 | 0:28:47
a goalkeeping error has allowed City
back. In the first ten or 15 minutes | 0:28:47 | 0:28:52
of the second half before Liverpool
got the second, City were on top so | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
the mistake can Kostyuk and it is
continuously happening. He's not | 0:28:56 | 0:29:04
been convinced with Mignolet, Loris
Karius has not been convincing | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
cities gone there. I think it is the
key area Liverpool need to | 0:29:06 | 0:29:08
strengthen now and if they do, they
can seriously content neck season. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:13
They are formidable. City host
Newcastle in the late game. We keep | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
on having the same conversation
about Newcastle. The manager wants | 0:29:16 | 0:29:20
to strengthen but the club cannot
seem to get the sale over the line, | 0:29:20 | 0:29:23
they are holding out for a better
deal at both ends up things. If they | 0:29:23 | 0:29:27
don't sort | 0:29:27 | 0:29:28
deal at both ends up things. If they
don't sort this out in January, and | 0:29:28 | 0:29:30
Benitez does not get the players he
is talking about. Could this then | 0:29:30 | 0:29:35
badly? Triggered. I can't remember
the last Newcastle were the Premier | 0:29:35 | 0:29:41
League and did not have any issues.
It's ridiculous, there's always | 0:29:41 | 0:29:43
something going on. The issue is as
a player when you want to join an | 0:29:43 | 0:29:47
amazing club like Newcastle, one of
the big things you want is the | 0:29:47 | 0:29:50
assurance Rafa Benitez will be there
to help continue your career in the | 0:29:50 | 0:29:54
right direction, as well as joining
a fantastic football club. But | 0:29:54 | 0:29:57
right direction, as well as joining
a fantastic football club. But there | 0:29:57 | 0:29:57
no assurances Benitez will be their
past the summer with what is going | 0:29:57 | 0:30:01
on right now, the uncertainty of
being able to strengthen and bring | 0:30:01 | 0:30:04
in players and they desperately need
to. Dropping points to Swansea last | 0:30:04 | 0:30:09
week, it said a lot to me. It is a
worrying sign. They had to win this | 0:30:09 | 0:30:14
game. The fact they didn't was a
terrible result. Yes, they got back | 0:30:14 | 0:30:19
into it but at the same time, they
need goals and they need to be | 0:30:19 | 0:30:23
stronger at the back. They need more
to stay in this league. As it | 0:30:23 | 0:30:28
stands, for me, I've said before, I
think it will be an unbelievable | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
result if they manage to even stay
in the Premier League this year. | 0:30:32 | 0:30:36
Well, Liverpool were amongst
a number of clubs taking part this | 0:30:39 | 0:30:41
week in the launch of Super Movers. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
Heard about that one? | 0:30:43 | 0:30:49
The BBC and the Premier League have
made it their mission to help | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
primary leak children move more.
Superstars like this... And this, | 0:30:52 | 0:31:02
will be joining forces to energise
young kids and help kids get moving, | 0:31:02 | 0:31:10
to the Super Movers beat. | 0:31:10 | 0:31:12
Well worth checking out. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:13
Time for another type of mover now
in Francis Coquelin, | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
who has swapped north London
for the sunshine of Spain. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:23
I have been here only a week now but
I am settling in very well, all the | 0:31:26 | 0:31:30
people are very nice. There was
interest from Valencia in the summer | 0:31:30 | 0:31:35
and I think I will try to get my
place back at Arsenal, but that | 0:31:35 | 0:31:41
didn't happen so in the January
window when I heard they were still | 0:31:41 | 0:31:45
interested it was a good opportunity
for me to enjoy my football and, | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
here and try to do something.
The league is different in England, | 0:31:48 | 0:31:55
you know, a bit more physical. The
way the top teams try to play, but | 0:31:55 | 0:32:01
it is quite physical as well. Here
you have physical abilities as well | 0:32:01 | 0:32:08
but technically I think that La Liga
is superb, and that all the teams | 0:32:08 | 0:32:13
can play. It all a lot to Arsenal
Football Club, they raised me as a | 0:32:13 | 0:32:18
footballer but as a man as | 0:32:18 | 0:32:24
footballer but as a man as well -- I
owe a lot to Arsenal Football Club. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
To the manager as well, he raised
me. And I am at Valencia to write a | 0:32:26 | 0:32:31
new chapter of my life. Theo Walcott
has left and Alexis Sanchez is the | 0:32:31 | 0:32:38
big move, possibly going to
Manchester United. Heard a lot of | 0:32:38 | 0:32:40
things in the dressing room but I
don't really know where they come | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
from. He is someone who is always
keen to work. I don't think the | 0:32:43 | 0:32:49
squad is the problem, it is just the
uncertainty around him. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:58
I don't think it a crisis. Obviously
they need a couple of results to get | 0:32:58 | 0:33:03
going again obviously if Alexis
Sanchez goes, they will need to | 0:33:03 | 0:33:07
strengthen the team, and for the
fans as well, because they demand | 0:33:07 | 0:33:12
obviously a competitive team.
They will be upset if no one comes | 0:33:12 | 0:33:17
in in the transfer market for
Sanchez. Is Wenger the right person | 0:33:17 | 0:33:22
to see the club through this? People
tend to forget what he has done for | 0:33:22 | 0:33:29
the club. The frustration, I think
everyone needs to stand by him. He's | 0:33:29 | 0:33:32
the manager of the club and I think
everyone has to be him. Because that | 0:33:32 | 0:33:36
is the only way the results will
turn around. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:40
STUDIO: Surprised he left Arsenal.
He did a good job? | 0:33:40 | 0:33:46
I'm not surprised he left. I thought
a couple of years ago he was doing a | 0:33:46 | 0:33:49
really good job and everyone was
talking about this guy, solid | 0:33:49 | 0:33:53
midfield, love the tackle, and I
think this year, and the second half | 0:33:53 | 0:33:58
of last year, I felt the Arsenal
fans turned on him a little bit. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
Yes, he had some poor performances,
and I think the sending off at White | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
Hart Lane was one of the big ones,
but at the same time, younger | 0:34:05 | 0:34:09
player, stick with him. Help build
him up, maybe. I know me and Kevin | 0:34:09 | 0:34:16
firmly believe he is better than
Elneny, so have they let him down a | 0:34:16 | 0:34:22
little? I just think of it Arsenal
fans turned on him and it had a | 0:34:22 | 0:34:27
knock-on effect on his performances.
Another man who has left Arsenal, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
Theo Walcott. Off to Everton. I
don't know if you saw the press | 0:34:30 | 0:34:37
Conference, but speaking with great
confidence, enjoyed being with big | 0:34:37 | 0:34:39
Sam Allardyce there as well. Right
move for him at the rate he | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
Ministry? I thought he was great in
the press Conference, spoke | 0:34:43 | 0:34:47
brilliantly, obviously got it to
have left Arsenal the way it is. I | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
think it is perhaps two years behind
when he should have gone because | 0:34:51 | 0:34:57
almost in those last two, three
years, he has gone a bit stale and | 0:34:57 | 0:35:00
some players need that moves to
reignite their career. I think it is | 0:35:00 | 0:35:03
a great move for Everton. They
desperately need pace and don't have | 0:35:03 | 0:35:06
a lot upfront. I think he will be
that player they can bring in to | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
make those runs that Gylfi
Sigurdsson Wayne Rooney can pick him | 0:35:09 | 0:35:13
out, so I think there's a good move
from their point of view. I look at | 0:35:13 | 0:35:18
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and I think
Theo Walcott is thinking, hang on, | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
he left and all of a sudden he's
producing this form at Liverpool. I | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
want a piece of that. I want to go
and get better. And I think that | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
will happen now years gone. Chelsea
have already scored against | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
Brighton, by the way, Hazard scoring
for Chelsea. Talking about players | 0:35:32 | 0:35:41
coming in, Aubameyang, an
interesting one. Is that the right | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
sort of move for Arsenal? Because
the fans need something this | 0:35:44 | 0:35:48
January. I think so. We definitely
haven't seen the best of Mkhitaryan, | 0:35:48 | 0:35:54
at Borussia Dortmund, always linked
up with Aubameyang and hurt teams in | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
Europe. I think what hearts Arsenal
the most is sending one of their | 0:35:57 | 0:36:01
stars to a rival, but I think it
will appease them, if they can bring | 0:36:01 | 0:36:06
in Aubameyang and Mkhitaryan, I
think it is a step in the right | 0:36:06 | 0:36:09
direction, to appease them. And also
perhaps adapting their style a bit, | 0:36:09 | 0:36:13
going forward and be more creative.
And they take on Palace today. The | 0:36:13 | 0:36:19
statistics around them are
ludicrous. There start of the season | 0:36:19 | 0:36:23
and they are now 12th and they have
only lost three of the last 16. What | 0:36:23 | 0:36:27
a job he has done. You have to
admire him. He is not trying to play | 0:36:27 | 0:36:34
anything up, post much, just plays
it cool, not pulling his own | 0:36:34 | 0:36:37
trumpet. Says we have a long way to
go, just playing it cool, that is | 0:36:37 | 0:36:42
his ethos and it has been great to
see -- post match. OK. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:48
Bournemouth buoyant after beating
Arsenal and then, a midweek FA Cup | 0:36:48 | 0:36:51
exit at the hands of Wigan. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:52
They got off to a bad start
when the Wigan skipper Sam Morsy | 0:36:52 | 0:36:55
slotted home after Will Grigg's
effort was saved. | 0:36:55 | 0:36:57
The League 1 leaders
doubled their advantage | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
in the second half. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:00
Substitute Dan Burn converting
Max Power's cross. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:02
In off the bar, and three minutes
later it was all over, | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
when this well-directed header
from Callum Elder | 0:37:05 | 0:37:06
made it 3-0. | 0:37:06 | 0:37:07
How about that for are perfectly
aimed header? | 0:37:07 | 0:37:09
Paul Cook's side will now face
West Ham in the fourth round. | 0:37:09 | 0:37:16
So it could have been
West Ham and Bournemouth | 0:37:16 | 0:37:18
in the FA Cup next Saturday. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
It is West Ham and Bournemouth in
the Premier League this afternoon. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
Steve Bower is there for us. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:27
Apart from comparing notes on Wigan,
an aborted game for both sides? Yes, | 0:37:27 | 0:37:32
you're right. Both have had a
resurgence -- an important game for | 0:37:32 | 0:37:39
both sides. Speaking about Crystal
Palace, but West Ham have something | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
similar. They picked up three points
from 24 and in the last 24 they | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
suddenly have 15 on the board and it
led to David Moyes yesterday | 0:37:46 | 0:37:50
speaking about five more wins to get
to that magical 40 point mark. Real | 0:37:50 | 0:37:55
momentum suddenly about West Ham. He
has brought that organisation which | 0:37:55 | 0:37:58
we knew he would do and he has goals
at the other end. Marko Arnautovic | 0:37:58 | 0:38:02
is a big reason for that, six | 0:38:02 | 0:38:09
is a big reason for that, six goals
in his last seven games, linking up | 0:38:12 | 0:38:13
with Manuel Lanzini. Only losing one
of their last eight at home and | 0:38:13 | 0:38:16
suddenly there is a different
feeling in the stadium. This fixture | 0:38:16 | 0:38:18
of course open the Premier League at
the London stadium, which they won | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
one of his era. For these teams,
suddenly of results go their way | 0:38:21 | 0:38:23
they could find themselves in the
top half of the table | 0:38:23 | 0:38:26
psychologically by the end of this
evening. Speaking psychologically, | 0:38:26 | 0:38:30
Bournemouth, yes, after that FA Cup,
Eddie Howe making eight changes, but | 0:38:30 | 0:38:35
what a lift and a shot in the arm
for them to beat Arsenal at home. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:40
Since I saw them lose heavily at the
Etihad Stadium, what a change, they | 0:38:40 | 0:38:46
have a chance to keep that going.
These two are separated by just one | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
point. A landmark day for Eddie Howe
as well, his 100th Premier League | 0:38:49 | 0:38:54
game, the youngest Premier League
manager to reach that landmark. I | 0:38:54 | 0:38:58
will let you there think about the
other two. Brighton are 2-0 down to | 0:38:58 | 0:39:12
Chelsea, Willian getting the second. | 0:39:12 | 0:39:13
More from Steve
on Final Score later. | 0:39:13 | 0:39:15
Dion Dublin and Alex Scott will be
across all the 3 o'clocks | 0:39:15 | 0:39:18
with Eilidh Barbour. | 0:39:18 | 0:39:19
Jermaine is back tonight
with Alan Shearer | 0:39:19 | 0:39:20
and Gary on Match of the Day. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:22
MOTD2 extra tomorrow
with Southampton | 0:39:22 | 0:39:23
and Spurs to look forward to. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
And Mark Chapman will complete
the weekend at 10:30pm tomorrow. | 0:39:25 | 0:39:27
Last Saturday, West Brom
won their first league match | 0:39:27 | 0:39:32
since August, but any joy
was quickly tempered | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
by the news on Monday
morning that their former striker | 0:39:35 | 0:39:38
Cyrille Regis had died suddenly
at the age of 59. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:40
Albion fan Adrian Chiles looks back
on his life and legacy. | 0:39:40 | 0:39:47
He was just a leader, a trailblazer.
Very dignified. Cyrille was a lovely | 0:39:47 | 0:39:57
guy, a gentleman. God must be short
of strikers, and he has chosen the | 0:39:57 | 0:40:02
right one. The man who did so much
to change British football was | 0:40:02 | 0:40:07
actually born in French Guyana.
Raised in West London, he trained as | 0:40:07 | 0:40:12
an electrician after leaving school
but in 1977 his talent caught the | 0:40:12 | 0:40:17
eye of West Brom and suddenly a new
career and a new era in British | 0:40:17 | 0:40:20
football sparked into life.
COMMENTATOR: Superb! Cyrille Regis | 0:40:20 | 0:40:28
has come from semiprofessional
football, and he has blasted his way | 0:40:28 | 0:40:33
into the scene at the top. He played
with a certain freedom, because he | 0:40:33 | 0:40:38
came from non-league. A wonderful
centre forward. He played with a | 0:40:38 | 0:40:43
smile on his face. He could bring
people into play quite comfortably, | 0:40:43 | 0:40:49
make runs, scorer goals from all
sorts of places, spectacular goals. | 0:40:49 | 0:40:53
A real powerful runner. A number
nine that most clubs now play with | 0:40:53 | 0:40:59
more than a lot of money for, but a
team player that had real good | 0:40:59 | 0:41:04
individual qualities that could
create something and of course we | 0:41:04 | 0:41:07
remember some of the wonderful
individual goals he scored. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:11
COMMENTATOR: What a great shot! One
of the goals of the season, Cyrille | 0:41:11 | 0:41:16
Regis! As the goal Lewin Dooley Max
Lowe in far uglier things flew down | 0:41:16 | 0:41:25
from the terraces. At a time when
not many black players played | 0:41:25 | 0:41:29
football, he was the target of vile
relentless racist abuse. I was | 0:41:29 | 0:41:35
listening on the TV, and obviously I
didn't know what was going on but | 0:41:35 | 0:41:38
you could hear the monkey chants.
The aggravation we talked about in | 0:41:38 | 0:41:49
the 70s and a diplomat, all the
racial aggravation, I never saw | 0:41:49 | 0:41:53
Cyrille get angry. He just seemed to
show people his ability -- in the | 0:41:53 | 0:41:58
70s and 80s. If you can apply your
trade on a football pitch well | 0:41:58 | 0:42:03
getting abused, nonstop, you are
bigger man than me because I | 0:42:03 | 0:42:08
probably would have reacted. That is
what makes them different, what | 0:42:08 | 0:42:13
makes Cyrille different. His bride
defied prejudiced the matter how | 0:42:13 | 0:42:18
extreme. I got picked to play for
England. A letter came through the | 0:42:18 | 0:42:22
post, and I got a letter saying if
you ever step foot on this Wembley | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
pitch you will get one of these in
your knees. We showed it to the | 0:42:26 | 0:42:30
boys. It wasn't going to stop me. A
death threat shrugged off with the | 0:42:30 | 0:42:35
same ease he would see off a
defender's challenge. He would | 0:42:35 | 0:42:41
eventually get the silverware his
career deserved, with Coventry in | 0:42:41 | 0:42:45
1987, the FA Cup. But his impact in
football can't simply be measured in | 0:42:45 | 0:42:49
goals or trophies. His greatest
triumph was what came afterwards, | 0:42:49 | 0:42:55
inspiring and paving the way for the
next generation. I remember my uncle | 0:42:55 | 0:42:59
Cyrille, everyone so proud of what
he was doing and the Strachey was | 0:42:59 | 0:43:02
making not just for himself and our
family but for black people in | 0:43:02 | 0:43:07
England -- the strides that he was
making. Sign without the strength of | 0:43:07 | 0:43:11
character he had, people like me
would not have had the opportunity. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:17
-- yes, without the strength of
character he had. We will try and | 0:43:17 | 0:43:20
take on what he has taught us and
inspire the next generation of | 0:43:20 | 0:43:27
footballers, black, white, orange,
we don't care. Cyrille Regis open | 0:43:27 | 0:43:31
and closed mind and in the process
open the door to a new era for | 0:43:31 | 0:43:37
others. His legacy will be seen on
football pitches up and down the | 0:43:37 | 0:43:42
country on this and every weekend.
He was an inspiration, an icon, a | 0:43:42 | 0:43:46
hero and a friend, and society, as
much as football, should forever be | 0:43:46 | 0:43:51
grateful to them. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:55
much as football, should
forever be grateful to him. | 0:43:55 | 0:43:59
What a man. So sad he has gone.
People paying tribute not just | 0:43:59 | 0:44:04
there, but throughout the week, of
what an inspiration he has been to | 0:44:04 | 0:44:08
so many players, whatever
generation. Yes, and I think it was | 0:44:08 | 0:44:12
put well better by those players,
Brian Deane and so on, about exactly | 0:44:12 | 0:44:17
what Cyrille brought to the game. In
my house he was like a god. I | 0:44:17 | 0:44:22
obviously didn't really get to see
much of his era but my parents, my | 0:44:22 | 0:44:28
mum and my dad, the always
emphasised to me what Cyrille | 0:44:28 | 0:44:33
brought to the game to allow me to
go and enjoy the game, basically, | 0:44:33 | 0:44:37
that I loved, with freedom, because
that is what I got. I suppose what | 0:44:37 | 0:44:43
he went through as an experience was
far beyond that but it was the level | 0:44:43 | 0:44:47
of class he did it with, and that
was just one side. What an | 0:44:47 | 0:44:50
unbelievable football player as
well. Seriously sad day, and I think | 0:44:50 | 0:44:54
you can see how emotional the people
that were closer to him are. I find | 0:44:54 | 0:44:59
it amazing. What was alluded to the,
the skill of the abuse he received, | 0:44:59 | 0:45:05
and yet not react to that, and sort
of kill them with kindness, that is | 0:45:05 | 0:45:09
the mark of the man, isn't it? Which
is not an easy thing to do. When | 0:45:09 | 0:45:15
people hate and are viable, the
things through the post, not only to | 0:45:15 | 0:45:20
kind of kill them with kindness but
to show I think the level of | 0:45:20 | 0:45:24
bravery, to step into that type of
arena, face that type of adversity | 0:45:24 | 0:45:28
head on and deal with it, I mean,
that is why everybody else behind, | 0:45:28 | 0:45:35
following Cyrille, says, OK, they
can get a bullet through the post | 0:45:35 | 0:45:39
and step on that pitch in an England
shirt I step out and do myself proud | 0:45:39 | 0:45:43
as well. Unbelievable. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:48
You came across at West Brom? He was
my coach said two years. I signed | 0:45:48 | 0:45:52
for West Brom as a record signing
and it was a bit of a burden on my | 0:45:52 | 0:45:56
shoulders at the time. I struggled
initially to adapt and adjust. | 0:45:56 | 0:46:01
Cyrille was there alongside me. You
spoke about a burden, it might have | 0:46:01 | 0:46:04
been a burden on me but what I was
feeling was nothing compared to what | 0:46:04 | 0:46:08
Cyrille felt when he played himself.
He used to put his arm around me, | 0:46:08 | 0:46:13
honestly, firstly, his smile was the
most infectious smile you could ever | 0:46:13 | 0:46:16
imagine. Just when he used to chat
to you in a calm way, you would come | 0:46:16 | 0:46:21
away from Cyrille feeling ten feet
tall, we just knew him as Big C, he | 0:46:21 | 0:46:28
was a great character and
personality but what he meant to | 0:46:28 | 0:46:31
Midlands football in general, and
particularly West Brom, wherever we | 0:46:31 | 0:46:35
would go or travel to, they did not
want to see us, the modern-day | 0:46:35 | 0:46:38
birds, they wanted to speak to
Cyrille and listen to his stories. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:43
Having all those rivals and be loved
by everybody. How we could play for | 0:46:43 | 0:46:47
Wolves and West Brom and be loved by
both, I don't know, Coventry and | 0:46:47 | 0:46:50
Aston Villa but I can't speak highly
enough for what he did to me from a | 0:46:50 | 0:46:54
personal view. He was not a black
coach to me, he was just a coach, | 0:46:54 | 0:46:57
that is all. He was great around the
place, an amazing character. We saw | 0:46:57 | 0:47:01
Chris Hughton in the piece and this
was the minute's applause before | 0:47:01 | 0:47:05
Brighton and Chelsea today, and it
will happen at every game and the | 0:47:05 | 0:47:08
players will wear black armbands.
Thank you for your beautiful | 0:47:08 | 0:47:11
tributes, both, I know he knew
inspired you and you knew him Wright | 0:47:11 | 0:47:15
Chu-Young gripper germane. -- knew
him in your young career, germane. | 0:47:15 | 0:47:21
John Motson is at the King Power
Stadium today for Leicester's | 0:47:21 | 0:47:24
match with Watford. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:25
I know you, dated lots on Cyrille
Regis write your career. It's been a | 0:47:25 | 0:47:28
tough week in Kaboul. What are your
particular memories of him? Not just | 0:47:28 | 0:47:32
the memories of Cyrille, it is what
they had to put up with in the 70s | 0:47:32 | 0:47:38
and 80s, the black players, when I
was commentating. I won't go into | 0:47:38 | 0:47:43
detail but things were thrown, said
enchanted, terrible abuse. I was | 0:47:43 | 0:47:46
once on a plane with the England
team when John Barnes had scored a | 0:47:46 | 0:47:49
great goal and there was a far right
group of people on the plane who | 0:47:49 | 0:47:52
were shouting down the aisles,
"England only won 1-0 because we're | 0:47:52 | 0:47:58
not counting your goal". That was
the kind of level it went to. This | 0:47:58 | 0:48:04
was the era Cyrille Regis came into
along with Laurie Cunningham and | 0:48:04 | 0:48:08
Brendon Batson, the three degrees,
as Ron Atkinson christen them at | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
West Brom and that was a fine team,
by the way. But Cyrille presented a | 0:48:11 | 0:48:18
lot of other players, Clyde Best at
West Ham, one of the first place to | 0:48:18 | 0:48:22
receive series of abuse but Cyrille
brought dignity and decency -- | 0:48:22 | 0:48:27
decency to it as well as brilliant
football. I can't top Adrian Chiles' | 0:48:27 | 0:48:33
words on his fine career, it was
magnificent. I have to say, having | 0:48:33 | 0:48:37
thought about it this way, I think
he was probably a pioneer, a | 0:48:37 | 0:48:41
vanguard in a movement which saw the
black community, and we are not just | 0:48:41 | 0:48:45
talking football, by the way, get
the state is they deserved in the | 0:48:45 | 0:48:49
70s and 80s. It was a social issue
and he was right at the heart of it. | 0:48:49 | 0:48:55
I am at Leicester this morning,
dang, and you won't mind me saying | 0:48:55 | 0:48:58
we have had a great hero passing in
the week here, too, Rodney Fearn, | 0:48:58 | 0:49:05
played in the 1969 cup final for
Leicester City against Manchester | 0:49:05 | 0:49:09
City. He passed away at the age of
69 so in addition to the sentiment | 0:49:09 | 0:49:14
that will be coming Cyrille Regis'
way today, there will be a lot of | 0:49:14 | 0:49:19
people here at Leicester, the Foxes
will remember a very fine player, | 0:49:19 | 0:49:26
Rodney Fearn. Thanks, John. Briefly
on today, there will be a minute's | 0:49:26 | 0:49:32
applause today as well before the
game. For Watford, only five points | 0:49:32 | 0:49:36
in their last 30 and it seems to
have unravelled a bit since the boss | 0:49:36 | 0:49:39
was linked with the Everton job. I
think you are absolutely spot on. | 0:49:39 | 0:49:44
Let me tell you about Watford. They
have a habit of changing the couch | 0:49:44 | 0:49:48
every year. When he came in, Marco
Silva, OK, he had been at Hull City, | 0:49:48 | 0:49:55
I don't think that was the greatest
achievement in the world, to be | 0:49:55 | 0:49:58
honest but Watford appointed him and
he won the first three away games | 0:49:58 | 0:50:02
and everybody went, "Oh, we have got
a good coach here", and he spoke | 0:50:02 | 0:50:07
English which the previous coach
didn't and they were pleased with | 0:50:07 | 0:50:10
that. Then suddenly, along come
Everton. Do you know what I been? | 0:50:10 | 0:50:15
Whether you blame Marco Silva for
this or not, I don't know but it was | 0:50:15 | 0:50:18
a destruction. And Watford's form
became more inconsistent after that | 0:50:18 | 0:50:24
incident. Now it is not for me to
say what will happen. Watford may | 0:50:24 | 0:50:29
well get on a run which he badly
needs by the way, to get out of this | 0:50:29 | 0:50:34
terrible one in ten record they have
got at the moment in the Premier | 0:50:34 | 0:50:38
League. But I certainly think he
could do with winning a few games | 0:50:38 | 0:50:43
because the family, the Pozzo family
are great owners, they stay in the | 0:50:43 | 0:50:49
Premier League and change the
manager again and again so he has | 0:50:49 | 0:50:51
got to be careful but it would help
if Richarlison, the Brazilian who | 0:50:51 | 0:50:55
everybody says they want to sign,
would get a goal, he has not scored | 0:50:55 | 0:50:59
since November, by the way. Anyway,
just to say finally, Dan, I thought | 0:50:59 | 0:51:04
the tribute to Cyrille Regis was
most appropriate and most deserved | 0:51:04 | 0:51:07
and I shall be joining in the minute
of appreciation which will happen | 0:51:07 | 0:51:12
here along with all the other
Premier League grounds today. John, | 0:51:12 | 0:51:17
wise words as ever. Great to hear. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
Well, Leicester and Watford can both
look forward to FA Cup | 0:51:19 | 0:51:22
action next weekend. | 0:51:22 | 0:51:23
Our coverage of the fourth
round begins on Friday night. | 0:51:23 | 0:51:26
Huish Park sees League 2 Yeovil
welcome Manchester United. | 0:51:26 | 0:51:28
Jermaine Jenas will be there! | 0:51:28 | 0:51:30
On Saturday, Focus will
come from Notts County | 0:51:30 | 0:51:32
ahead of their tie with Swansea. | 0:51:32 | 0:51:33
Highlights of all the day's
action later that night. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:35
And there's another live match | 0:51:35 | 0:51:36
for you on Sunday afternoon,
as Cardiff take on Manchester City. | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
It's the fourth round of the Cup
in Scotland this weekend, | 0:51:39 | 0:51:42
and the big tie tomorrow sees Hearts
host their Edinburgh | 0:51:42 | 0:51:44
rivals Hibernian. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:45
In the home dugout will be
Craig Levein, who's been reflecting | 0:51:45 | 0:51:48
with Rob Maclean on a turbulent few
years at Tynecastle. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:54
There's a new stand and a new
sparkle at Tynecastle but it is | 0:52:00 | 0:52:04
probably worth reminding ourselves
about the dark days of financial | 0:52:04 | 0:52:06
crisis for Hearts. Yeah, I think the
supporters are very much aware of | 0:52:06 | 0:52:12
the recent history. I believe they
were one day away from closing the | 0:52:12 | 0:52:16
doors. It's a great story because
the bands effectively saved the club | 0:52:16 | 0:52:20
but they needed direction, supplied
by the woman who is affectionately | 0:52:20 | 0:52:25
known now as the queen of Hearts,
Ann Budge. She has managed to build | 0:52:25 | 0:52:32
the bridges that were burned down in
the latter years of the previous | 0:52:32 | 0:52:36
administration. She is very unique.
I've never dealt with anybody else | 0:52:36 | 0:52:39
like her in football. She does not
always look at what is the best for | 0:52:39 | 0:52:43
her. She thinks about mainly what is
best for Scottish football I think | 0:52:43 | 0:52:48
which is quite refreshing. She
brought you back into the club. It's | 0:52:48 | 0:52:51
not a job for you because the club
clearly has a big place in your | 0:52:51 | 0:52:53
heart. Coming back to Tynecastle has
been a huge help. I'm excited by Ann | 0:52:53 | 0:53:00
Budge's enthusiasm. It is three and
a half years now I have been back | 0:53:00 | 0:53:05
here. I have been really pleased
with the way things have gone in | 0:53:05 | 0:53:08
general. You had great success with
your first young head coach in | 0:53:08 | 0:53:14
Robbie Nielson, who is now at MK
Dons. Does Ian Cathro go down as a | 0:53:14 | 0:53:18
failure? I don't like to use that
word because you are talking about | 0:53:18 | 0:53:24
people and I think he's a very good
coach. I think he will be a very | 0:53:24 | 0:53:28
good coach at another club. But I
think this was a bit too early for | 0:53:28 | 0:53:32
him. Is it a strange situation now
that the director of football is | 0:53:32 | 0:53:37
also the head coach? I have been a
manager and director of football | 0:53:37 | 0:53:42
before Adam Dundee United so it is
not alien to me. After Ian left, I | 0:53:42 | 0:53:46
felt that it was partly my
responsibility that the club was | 0:53:46 | 0:53:50
where it was and I felt a real need
to try to help and fix it. Harry | 0:53:50 | 0:53:56
Cochrane! The invincible 's are in
big trouble at Tynecastle. Were even | 0:53:56 | 0:54:07
new surprised at Hearts 4-0 Celtic
and the ending of that unbeaten | 0:54:07 | 0:54:11
domestic run for Brendan Rodgers and
his team? It had to end! It was not | 0:54:11 | 0:54:17
going to last forever. A lot of
circumstances went our way that day. | 0:54:17 | 0:54:20
The stadium itself, with the new
stand, makes it feel even smaller. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:24
Everything is right on top of you
and it is so intimidating at times. | 0:54:24 | 0:54:27
I said beforehand, and I will say
again, it will be a long old time | 0:54:27 | 0:54:32
before anybody manages to do
something like that again in | 0:54:32 | 0:54:35
Scottish football. You are looking
forward and hoping for a good result | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
in the Scottish Cup against Hibs and
Hearts have not had a win against | 0:54:38 | 0:54:43
your Edinburgh rivals in the last
nine, I don't think. Absolutely, | 0:54:43 | 0:54:46
yeah! I mean, in my long career of
playing for Hearts and managing them | 0:54:46 | 0:54:53
previously, I can count on one hand
I think the time we have lost | 0:54:53 | 0:54:57
matches do Hibs said this is quite
alien. Such a buzz going into it. | 0:54:57 | 0:55:03
I've never seen a match that just
goes health leather for 90 minutes | 0:55:03 | 0:55:06
like this one does. -- Hell for
leather. The players find extra | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
energy from somewhere. The last game
at Tynecastle was a whirlwind for me | 0:55:10 | 0:55:14
and I expect this one will be the
same. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:18 | |
Great to see them moving in the
right direction. Highlights of that | 0:55:18 | 0:55:22
on BBC One Scotland or night. We are
currently on BBC Two Scotland | 0:55:22 | 0:55:26
because it is St Mirren against
Aberdeen in the cup and Aberdeen | 0:55:26 | 0:55:28
approaching half-time, leading the
game 3-1. Craig Levein we know is a | 0:55:28 | 0:55:34
former Scotland manager. It seems
they are a bit closer to knowing who | 0:55:34 | 0:55:37
the next got manager will be. Seems
to tick all the boxes, Michael | 0:55:37 | 0:55:41
O'Neill lives in Edinburgh, he
sorted out the severance package | 0:55:41 | 0:55:43
with Northern Ireland and has been
in talks with the SFA so it seems to | 0:55:43 | 0:55:46
be a matter of time. They targeted
him almost immediately after the | 0:55:46 | 0:55:51
switch to the game that took
Northern Ireland at and I should | 0:55:51 | 0:55:53
have taken into the World Cup in
many respects. -- that should have | 0:55:53 | 0:55:57
taken them. It is a huge blow for
the FA in Northern Ireland but as | 0:55:57 | 0:56:01
you say, just with family, living in
Edinburgh, it might make sense | 0:56:01 | 0:56:05
logistically for him. But again, a
huge blow for Northern Ireland. | 0:56:05 | 0:56:08
They've got a big rebuilding job to
go through. Michael O'Neill | 0:56:08 | 0:56:12
potentially new Scotland manager.
Wales seem to have found their man | 0:56:12 | 0:56:16
in Ryan Giggs. I don't know if you
saw his press Conference this week, | 0:56:16 | 0:56:19
almost quite defensive because
there's been some criticism of the | 0:56:19 | 0:56:22
fact he was not always present as
Wales player and now he's trying to | 0:56:22 | 0:56:26
lead the team to a major
championship. Can you understand | 0:56:26 | 0:56:29
some of that? It is always going to
be thrown at him and I suppose that | 0:56:29 | 0:56:34
is the issue. People will talk about
the inexperience of it being his | 0:56:34 | 0:56:38
first managerial job. I personally
think it is the perfect job you | 0:56:38 | 0:56:44
don't have to deal with Sony other
things that you do at club level, | 0:56:44 | 0:56:46
agents, fees, all of those
complications like budget. He can | 0:56:46 | 0:56:49
watch the players that he needs and
go and watch them in depth and get | 0:56:49 | 0:56:56
exactly what he wants. I think it is
a good appointment, I really do but | 0:56:56 | 0:56:59
it will be interesting to see how he
gets on. Hopefully all that stuff | 0:56:59 | 0:57:02
will go away. We must also send our
best wishes to Plymouth's Brian | 0:57:02 | 0:57:09
Entwistle, 24-year-old defender who
had surgery for testicular cancer, | 0:57:09 | 0:57:13
Ryan, we wish you the best with your
recovery. | 0:57:13 | 0:57:16
That's all for today. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:17
Thanks very much to
Jermaine and Kevin. | 0:57:17 | 0:57:19
Remember we're back at 12 next
Saturday, live from Notts County. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:22
We'll
leave you with the predictions | 0:57:22 | 0:57:23
of Pete Wentz from US band
Fall Out Boy, whose new album | 0:57:23 | 0:57:26
Mania is out now. | 0:57:26 | 0:57:27
And apart from being an ace of bass,
he also co-owns US soccer team | 0:57:27 | 0:57:30
Phoenix Rising with Didier Drogba. | 0:57:30 | 0:57:32
Or should that be Dro-egba? | 0:57:32 | 0:57:33
Goodbye. | 0:57:33 | 0:57:34
# I need to come down | 0:57:34 | 0:57:38
# An-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-nother
day goes by | 0:57:38 | 0:57:42
# So hold me tight | 0:57:42 | 0:57:45
# Hold me tight, or don't...# | 0:57:45 | 0:57:48
I only really follow football super
hard-core during the World Cup. | 0:57:48 | 0:57:52
But maybe not this World Cup! | 0:57:52 | 0:57:55
Sometimes late at night, I'll watch,
like, YouTubes of, like, Messi, | 0:57:55 | 0:57:59
like, where he just goes down
the whole field and just, like, | 0:57:59 | 0:58:02
embarrasses everybody or whatever. | 0:58:02 | 0:58:05
It's kind of like mesmerising
to watch that kind of thing. | 0:58:05 | 0:58:13
When I was little, it was Alexi from
the US team and now it is Tim | 0:58:14 | 0:58:18
Howard. I love him. | 0:58:18 | 0:58:21
Myself, Diplo and a few
others own a soccer team | 0:58:21 | 0:58:23
in Phoenix, Arizona. | 0:58:23 | 0:58:26
But yeah, we've got Dro-egba,
who plays as a player owner as well, | 0:58:26 | 0:58:29
which is pretty cool. | 0:58:29 | 0:58:31
I think that that's an interesting
way to own a team, to be | 0:58:31 | 0:58:34
like the guy who is,
like, "I can literally change | 0:58:34 | 0:58:36
the fate of the team". | 0:58:36 | 0:58:38
Burnley? | 0:58:38 | 0:58:40
Yeah.
Burnley. | 0:58:40 | 0:58:41
I knew that one. | 0:58:41 | 0:58:43
2-0. | 0:58:43 | 0:58:46 | |
Everton, 1-0, in penalty kicks! | 0:58:52 | 0:58:54
LAUGHTER.
That is so stupid to say! | 0:58:54 | 0:58:59 |
