Hello and welcome to F1 Rewinds | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
from the Donington Museum at Donington Park, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
with the globe's favourite commentator, Mr Murray Walker, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
the voice of Formula One. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
And today we're simply talking about amazing races. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
So, let's start in 1996 | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
and really, that year, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:34
it was all about the Williams, wasn't it? | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
Yes, Williams dominated the season. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Michael Schumacher was completing his first season with Ferrari, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:44
but Williams led, I think they won 11 races during the whole year | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
and it was quite clear that the championship was going to be decided | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
between Damon Hill, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
who had finished second to Michael Schumacher | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
in the previous two years, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
and amazingly, Damon Hill's rookie team-mate, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
the French-Canadian, Jacques Villeneuve, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
who'd left American racing, come to Formula One, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
been an absolute sensation in his first season | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
and had one Grand Prix, and could be winning the world championship. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
Um, Damon Hill took the lead, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
but Jacques Villeneuve had a problem | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
halfway through the race, roughly halfway through the race, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
the problem being that one of his rear wheels came off! | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
That is a problem. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:25
Which finished the race for him, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
finished the championship for him, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
but enabled Damon Hill, not to coast home, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
but to drive home and win the World Championship, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
something that his father, Graham, had done. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
And so Damon became the only world champion son | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
of a world champion father. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
It was a very, very emotional occasion for him, Suzi, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
and it was certainly a very emotional occasion for me. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
Well, I think we all remember your commentary at the end there | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
and it was a great race. Here it is, then... | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
1996, Japan. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
ENGINES WHINING | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
It's hard to imagine | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
a more nerve-racking climax to this Formula One season | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
and hard to imagine also the kind of demands it was making on Damon Hill. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
For the last three weeks, he'd known he needed | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
just one single championship point | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
from this Japanese Grand Prix | 0:03:23 | 0:03:24
to make absolutely certain of the title. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
He was also very conscious of the manner | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
in which his team-mate and championship rival, | 0:03:29 | 0:03:31
Jacques Villeneuve, had reeled in | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
his big mid-season championship lead. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
Villeneuve couldn't be beaten in yesterday's qualifying, | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
although Damon Hill, in the last seconds of the session, | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
managed to get alongside him on the front row | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
and that meant that Hill had been on the front row | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
for every Grand Prix this season. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:47
An all-Williams front row then | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
for the ninth time this season. Schumacher and Berger on row two, | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
Hakkinen and Irvine on row three, | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
and a fine qualifying performance from Heinz-Harald Frentzen, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
alongside David Coulthard on row four. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:00
Coulthard stalled a McLaren, so the first start was aborted. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
The tension was unbearable as they came to the line for the second time | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
with Coulthard having to start from the back of the grid. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
The Japanese Grand Prix described by Tony Jardine, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:14
Jonathan Palmer and Murray Walker. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
MURRAY WALKER: Villeneuve on the right. Hill is on the left. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
The lights go out and the Japanese Grand Prix is...go! | 0:04:20 | 0:04:25
And it is go this time | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
and a brilliant start by Damon Hill | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
and Villeneuve has been passed. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
So, a terrible start for Jacques Villeneuve | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
and Damon Hill is in front, but remember, | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
and I'm not trying to be a Jeremiah, | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
but Damon Hill did exactly this at Monza | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
and out goes Jean Alesi. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
I don't know what the problem was in terms of somebody hitting him, | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
but Jean Alesi is the first retirement in Japan. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
Now, here's Alesi, this surely must be Alesi here. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:55
Look out for a car, there he is on the right-hand side, | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
we didn't see how that started, but a big impact there, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:00
Alesi probably got... | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
on a bit of a wheel-banging session with somebody. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Yes, Alesi was ninth on the grid. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:07
He may well have had a tangle either with Martin Brundle | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
or with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, | 0:05:10 | 0:05:11
who were respectively behind and in front of him. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:13
And there is Jacques Villeneuve and he's down in sixth position. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:17
So, he really has got it all to do | 0:05:17 | 0:05:19
and Damon Hill now is ahead of Gerhard Berger, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
so it's Williams leading, Benetton second, Hakkinen is in third place | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
and we're riding with Jacques Villeneuve now. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
We're now going to see what Villeneuve can do. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:32
If there's anybody out there that can show us what determination | 0:05:32 | 0:05:35
in a great car can do, | 0:05:35 | 0:05:36
he knows that somehow he's got to try and get back up in front. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
Damon has got to play it very cool indeed, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:44
as Gerhard Berger comes right up alongside him | 0:05:44 | 0:05:47
and goes over the kerb at the chicane, he was having a go there. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
Damon Hill rebuffed him, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:52
but at the same time kept the Williams clear of the Benetton | 0:05:52 | 0:05:55
and look at the gap, he's pulled out as a result of Berger | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
running over the kerb and that's given Mika Hakkinen | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
the opportunity to close up a bit on the Benetton. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Hill goes around, turn one, | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
this is a 155mph corner on the entry. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
That is Gerhard Berger. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:10
Look at his wing! Look at his front wing! | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
Gerhard Berger has got a wing problem. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
He's going to have to come in and change the nose | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
and this is going to make things even better for Damon Hill. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:21
Let's have a look. there goes Berger up the inside, | 0:06:21 | 0:06:24
he tried that from a long way behind | 0:06:24 | 0:06:25
and it looked a bit of a half-hearted measure, | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
that really was going to try and capitalise on the point I made | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
and that's the fact that Hill was going to be very, very cautious, | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
should that kind of thing happen. Into the pits comes Gerhard Berger, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
up to second goes Hakkinen, | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39
third goes Schumacher, fourth goes Irvine, fifth goes Villeneuve, | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
sixth is Martin Brundle. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:44
Things looking very, very good indeed | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
and it does look as if after all, Damon | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
has got a very good chance of going out with a wonderful victory. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
Oh, watch it, Jonathan! We've all said that. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
And again, Villeneuve has a look | 0:06:56 | 0:06:58
and this time, is he going through? Yes! | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
Eddie Irvine defers to Jacques Villeneuve, | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
who at last, from his point of view as he comes through on lap 12, | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
has got past that roadblock in front of him, | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
the V10 Ferrari of Eddie Irvine | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
and we can expect Jacques Villeneuve now to pull away from Irvine, | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
he's in...Villeneuve, therefore, is up into fourth position, | 0:07:19 | 0:07:24
three seconds behind Michael Schumacher. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
Here's how it was done. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
So, he's up the inside, closing, breaking, | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
pulling 3.5G right down to 30mph, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
locks the right front wheel momentarily. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:35
Watch him running wide, he can't stop the car quite early enough, | 0:07:35 | 0:07:38
but just tucks it in to get to the apex. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
Beautifully executed manoeuvre. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
Villeneuve, as I suspected, is absolutely flying. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
He's now nearly a second faster than Damon Hill. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
And now, Villeneuve driving out of his skin, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
has closed right up on Michael Schumacher | 0:07:53 | 0:07:57
and comes in, ideally placed now. | 0:07:57 | 0:08:00
If the Williams team can get an absolutely super stop, | 0:08:00 | 0:08:03
Michael Schumacher could be up against it when he comes in. | 0:08:03 | 0:08:07
Now, let's watch very carefully. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:09
Up go the hands when the... | 0:08:10 | 0:08:12
That's...there was a bit of delay there. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
That was not an ideal stop from Jacques Villeneuve's point of view. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:22
And he rejoins the pit, | 0:08:22 | 0:08:25
as coming through towards us is Gerhard Berger. | 0:08:25 | 0:08:29
Now, Berger is in tenth position, | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
so, Jacques Villeneuve has rejoined in 11th place, | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
that's not the end of the world, of course | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
and out of the race has gone Pedro Diniz. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
Villeneuve was slow. Why was he slow? Tony Jardine. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
As far as I could see the pit stop went extremely well, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
well-ordered, well-structured, well-disciplined, | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
but when it was over, | 0:08:52 | 0:08:54
Villeneuve was actually held by the pit crew, | 0:08:54 | 0:08:57
the lollipop stayed down for an agonising extra couple of seconds, | 0:08:57 | 0:09:01
because one of the Jordans, Barrichello's Jordan, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:03
was coming down the pit lane at the same time, so they held him on. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
Well, while Tony Jardine was talking, | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
you saw Jacques Villeneuve there | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
make an absolutely stupefying passing move on Gerhard Berger. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
And now, Villeneuve is up behind Olivier Panis, | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
who is in seventh place. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
So, Villeneuve has really got the bit between his teeth. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
We're on lap 16 in this 52-lap race. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
Hill is leading Hakkinen by over five seconds, | 0:09:28 | 0:09:31
Schumacher is seven seconds behind Hill, | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
Schumacher in third place, | 0:09:34 | 0:09:35
Irvine is fourth, Brundle is fifth, Frentzen is sixth, | 0:09:35 | 0:09:38
Panis is seventh, | 0:09:38 | 0:09:39
Villeneuve, that we are riding with, is in eighth place. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
He's not going to be there very much longer, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
because although that Mugen V10 engine in front of him | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
has got colossal grunt, Villeneuve is the better driver | 0:09:48 | 0:09:51
and he proves it by passing Olivier Panis, | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
as he had previously passed Gerhard Berger. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
Great stuff. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:01
That's Damon Hill. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
And... | 0:10:05 | 0:10:06
Oh, this is not good! | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
11 seconds. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Whatever, that's not good. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
He had to wait for Eddie Irvine coming in ahead of him | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
and you can see Damon Hill on the left | 0:10:16 | 0:10:18
and there is Michael Schumacher, | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
and there behind is Mika Hakkinen and that is in fourth place. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:25
Jacques Villeneuve. Wow. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:27
Now things are really, really getting hearty in Japan. | 0:10:27 | 0:10:32
Tony Jardine has got news for us. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
We've just heard from Ann Bradshaw in the Williams pit | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
that Jacques Villeneuve has a left rear puncture, | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
so problems for Jacques Villeneuve and his championship challenge. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
And that is going to bring him down. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:46
Of course, he is currently in fourth position, | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
he's 14 - nearly 15 - seconds ahead of Eddie Irvine, | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
but coming in and losing time, going into the pit lane, | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
stopping for some ten seconds also to get that left, | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
that new rear wheel and tyre on and he's coming into the pit lane now | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
and then having to speed up now. | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
I'm going to watch for Eddie Irvine to go through in fifth position | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
as you watch Jacques Villeneuve coming through the pit lane now. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:14
He's just opposite me. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:16
And Michael Schumacher is in the pit lane and so is Mika Hakkinen. | 0:11:16 | 0:11:21
And there is... | 0:11:21 | 0:11:24
one of the Arrows going past me, | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
as out goes Mika Hakkinen | 0:11:27 | 0:11:29
and I still haven't seen Eddie Irvine go by. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
Well... | 0:11:34 | 0:11:35
that has made things phenomenally difficult for Jacques Villeneuve, | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
who's coming out of the pit lane as I talk to you. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
You can see for yourself as he rejoins the track | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
and coming towards him in the background... | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
is Martin Brundle. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
And here is Damon Hill, race leader, | 0:11:52 | 0:11:54
25 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher. | 0:11:54 | 0:11:58
He wants a cool, calm, collected, controlled pit stop, | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
four new tyres and wheels, | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
the right amount of fuel, which is premeasured | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
and that looked like an absolutely immaculate stop for me, | 0:12:06 | 0:12:11
as Michael Schumacher here comes out | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
and Damon Hill is going to rejoin, is he? Just in front of the Ferrari? | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
Yes, he is! | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
Damon Hill, lap 35, | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
rejoins in the lead, ahead of Michael Schumacher. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
So, if any hope that the Ferrari team | 0:12:26 | 0:12:30
was that they would be able to pass Damon Hill in the pits, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:34
it has been destroyed | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
and on lap 36, | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
with Villeneuve now the fastest man on the track as we join him, | 0:12:38 | 0:12:41
a new fastest lap, 1:44.4, | 0:12:41 | 0:12:46
3.4 seconds outside the all-time lap record of Nigel Mansell. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:51
And that is... Villeneuve! It's Villeneuve! | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
Jacques Villeneuve is out of the race. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
Damon Hill is the World Champion of 1996. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:02
Wheel off Villeneuve. We'll see what happened, | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
but whatever it was, has denied him the World Championship. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:09
Frank Williams looking his normally impassive self, | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
but Damon Hill is the World Champion of 1996. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:16
He doesn't even have to finish the race. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:19
If he failed to finish the race, | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
he would still be nine World Championship points | 0:13:21 | 0:13:24
ahead of Jacques Villeneuve | 0:13:24 | 0:13:26
and Tony Jardine knows what happened. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:28
Villeneuve had radioed in just before it happened | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
and he said he felt the wheel loosening up. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
He didn't say it had fallen off, but he felt the wheel loosening up. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:37
There is a replay. We're going to see what happened. | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
He felt the wheel loosening up | 0:13:40 | 0:13:42
and the result of it was he ran wide and wider, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
the wheel goes past him | 0:13:45 | 0:13:47
into the gravel trap. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:48
Fortunately, it's hit...it goes over, over...into the crowd! | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
Oh, my goodness. I do hope nobody was hurt with that. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
But back to Jacques Villeneuve. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:58
No words of mine can overemphasise | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
what a brilliant season this young Canadian has had. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:07
So, on lap 40 in this 52-lap race, | 0:14:07 | 0:14:10
Hill leads Schumacher by just under three seconds, | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
knowing that he's just got to pace himself to finish. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:19
And he'll ideally now want to win this race. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
He knows he's won the world championship. He will want | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
to go out on the highest possible high by beating Michael Schumacher. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:29
And that's Andy Irvine spun off there. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:32
Irvine, who was right there alongside Gerhard Berger. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
Maybe they've had a coming together. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
It looks like Irvine is out of the race. Here's the replay. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:40
Irvine turns in. Berger is trying to get through on the inside. | 0:14:40 | 0:14:45
Irvine keeps his line. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
He's pushed out of the way and spun by Gerhard Berger, | 0:14:47 | 0:14:51
who drives across the apex. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:53
I'm always reluctant to ascribe responsibility, | 0:14:53 | 0:14:57
but, Jonathan, I'm sure you'll be delighted to do so. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
Well, I must say, I think Eddie Irvine did all he could. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
He understeered but then he came across. | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
He was going to stay in the middle of the road. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
It looked like Berger was just too committed, | 0:15:07 | 0:15:10
too fast on the approach there, | 0:15:10 | 0:15:11
and just had too much speed to keep it tight. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
Williams have asked us to point out, incidentally, | 0:15:16 | 0:15:18
that when Jacques Villeneuve came in, complaining of a rear puncture, | 0:15:18 | 0:15:22
the inspection afterwards by his engineer | 0:15:22 | 0:15:25
revealed no puncture whatsoever. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:27
There is speculation here that's that was the start of the problems | 0:15:27 | 0:15:31
with the rear hub. That's what they're thinking at the moment. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:35
Damon Hill, starting his last lap in Japan, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:40
and now is the time to say that we are seeing history made, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:45
because Damon Hill is the son of the great Graham Hill, | 0:15:45 | 0:15:52
the world champion of 1962 and 1965, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:57
and never before in the history of Formula One Grand Prix racing | 0:15:57 | 0:16:02
has the son of a world champion become world champion himself. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:07
Damon Hill has already done that | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
even if he doesn't complete the lap that he's on | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
as he goes round turn seven, up to the unique crossover at Suzuka, | 0:16:13 | 0:16:20
which makes this circuit the way it is. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:24
And there are the teams in their blue and white | 0:16:24 | 0:16:29
London Rowing Club caps, matching the helmet of Damon Hill, | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
which matches the helmet of his great father, Graham Hill. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
This is going to be a mighty emotional | 0:16:37 | 0:16:39
occasion for a lot of people, not the least of whom is myself. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:44
And Damon Hill will be concentrating in the cockpit there. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:48
But when he comes out of it, his arms will go up, | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
the helmet will come off. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
That is his wife Georgie. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:54
She's seen her husband become world champion. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
Now she's seeing him win the Japanese Grand Prix, | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
because he is almost home. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
This is something that many people | 0:17:04 | 0:17:06
didn't think could possibly happen today. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
They thought Damon would drive a cautious race, | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
but he fought from second on the grid. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
He passed Jacques Villeneuve, he took the lead, he stayed there | 0:17:14 | 0:17:18
and Damon Hill exits the chicane and wins the Japanese Grand Prix. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:24
And I've got to stop because I've got a lump in my throat. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:28
Michael Schumacher passes Damon Hill, but too late. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:35
Damon Hill wins in Japan. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:39
And he started this race nine points ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:44
The record will show that Damon Hill won the championship 19 points | 0:17:44 | 0:17:50
ahead of Jacques Villeneuve. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS | 0:17:53 | 0:17:57
CHEERING Forgive us, please, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:02
in Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, | 0:18:02 | 0:18:05
everywhere else that's watching this, | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
if we feel very emotional, because that's our boy. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:13
Damon Hill, world champion - what about that? | 0:18:13 | 0:18:17
It's just so fantastic. I can't tell you, Murray. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:22
I was driving along and I could hear you in my head - "Jacques out, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
"Murray's off." | 0:18:25 | 0:18:26
And it was quite a difficult job to concentrate after | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
I heard that Jacques was out. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:31
But I wanted to win the race | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
because I knew that was the best way to finish. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
Damon, I'm so happy for you. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
Not just because you're world champion, | 0:18:38 | 0:18:40
not just because you won the race, but because of the way you won it | 0:18:40 | 0:18:44
and the way you took the lead from the grid | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
by passing Jacques Villeneuve. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:49
Well, I said I wanted to get ahead and that was the best | 0:18:49 | 0:18:51
way of ensuring that I won the championship. The best form | 0:18:51 | 0:18:54
of defence is attack, so I made a good start, | 0:18:54 | 0:18:57
which I was pleased about. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
And once I was in front I was determined to stay there. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
Wow, what a fabulous day that was for Damon and all his family. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:06
And very honest commentary from you, Murray, if I might say. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:10
Suzi, I've had the privilege of seeing Damon grow up. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
I've known his double world champion father, Graham, who'd | 0:19:14 | 0:19:19
actually been in the commentary box with me on several occasions. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
So it was very emotional for me when Damon won. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:27
And I remember that as he crossed the line, it all welled up | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
and I said, and "I've got to stop now because | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
"I've got a lump in my throat." | 0:19:34 | 0:19:36
And it really was true. | 0:19:36 | 0:19:37
And I wondered how Damon felt after that, | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
because he was out of Williams, wasn't he? | 0:19:39 | 0:19:41
He'd won the world championship for them but no drive. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
It's well nigh beyond belief that having achieved | 0:19:44 | 0:19:49
world championship in 1996, | 0:19:49 | 0:19:51
he did so with the knowledge that he had already been | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
fired by Williams | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
because he'd had a not | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
so good season, by their very high standards, in 1995. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:04
And Frank Williams made the decision that he was going to replace | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
Damon Hill with Heinz-Harald Frentzen, | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
a decision I ever wonder if he's regretted. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
Well, they had three world champions in succession, didn't they? | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
That's right. Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and now Damon Hill. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:21
OK, let's move forward now to a race that a lot of people still say | 0:20:21 | 0:20:25
is one of the favourite races - Canada 2011. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:30
Certainly the longest race of all time. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:32
Four hours, four minutes and 39.5 seconds of drama. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
Why was it that long? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
Basically, because the weather was absolutely terrible, | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
as a result of which, they actually stopped the race for two | 0:20:41 | 0:20:46
whole hours and then started up again. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
And all sorts of things happened. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
But the amazing thing was that Jenson Button won the race | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
notwithstanding the fact that he had six pit stops, took a penalty, | 0:20:55 | 0:21:01
he had a puncture, he drove into his team-mate and he passed | 0:21:01 | 0:21:06
Sebastian Vettel halfway through the last lap to win the race. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:10
It was real Boy's Own Paper stuff. It's really was, wasn't it? | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
And with the duration, when they looked at his average speed, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
it was just 46.5mph and he won the Grand Prix. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
The slowest Grand Prix since 1906 probably! Let's take a look. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:26
There you see confirmation - the race will start behind the safety car. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
And the red lights are used as a countdown now to the start procedure. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
Vettel starts on pole from Alonso. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:50
Massa third, Webber fourth. | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
So Red Bull, Ferrari, Ferrari, Red Bull at the front of the grid. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:56
Hamilton and Rosberg fifth and sixth. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
Button seventh, Schumacher eight. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
So McLaren and Mercedes-Benz two by two there. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
Alguersuari starts at the end of the pit lane | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
and he will be sitting there an awful long time. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:11
He put a full wet set-up on the car, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:13
but if he's starting at the back... | 0:22:13 | 0:22:15
and at least with the safety car situation... | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
The race starts now. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
There is no formation lap. | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
No rain at the moment and this looks like we're gearing up here. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
Vettell can control the pace now. The safety car is out the way | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
so he dictates the pace from this point on. And he's gone early. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
He's gone early but Alonso's gone with him. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
There's no overtaking until they get to the first safety car line, | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
which is there. And that is why a Alonso fancied a bit of a look. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:41
And Vettel's gone too deep into the corner. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
Alonso is right behind him still. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
So they could overtake into that final corner. And Vettell moves out. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:49
But so does Alonso. Alonso goes to the right. | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
Vettell has the turning point in the corner, though. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
And behind we've got a McLaren. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:56
And he's touched! Webber is round. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
Mark Webber. And that's Lewis Hamilton. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
So Mark Webber keeps the engine running. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
He'll fall almost to the back of the field. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:06
And it was Hamilton getting right up the inside of him. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
He's always in the wars, is Lewis. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:11
This is a replay, on board with Lewis Hamilton. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
So Mark Webber... Gave him space. You're absolutely right. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:19
He gave him space and then Lewis just understeered into him. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
Michael getting off the braking, | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
off the rubber on the way into that corner, but has a bit of a moment | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
to lose Hamilton, who will be well positioned. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
As he comes out of the chicane in the rundown to turn ten. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:32
We saw him in the previous lap look down the outside of Michael. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
Let's see if he tries the same line again. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
Michael goes to the inside. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:39
Once again, Lewis gets wide, and Michael comes across. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
You can see he's pushed Lewis wide. Lewis will lose out to Button. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
Webber and Hamilton under investigation for that first corner. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:51
Will Lewis Hamilton get another drive-through penalty? | 0:23:51 | 0:23:53
What do you think? Well, I think in that case, there's no question. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
The McLarens touched! That is... | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
Well, Lewis Hamilton obviously with suspension damage, puncture. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
I'd be surprised if he makes it round back into the pits, | 0:24:03 | 0:24:06
but the problem in those conditions | 0:24:06 | 0:24:08
is Jenson Button can't see in his mirrors. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
There's so much spray coming off the front axle that any visibility | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
you have is just cancelled. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
This is just incredible. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:17
Lewis just seems to be touching with Mark, touching with Michael. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
Well, almost touching with Michael, | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
and then getting together with his team-mate. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
Will there be a safety car? It's a suspension broken, isn't it? | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
No, it's just a wheel rim, isn't it? | 0:24:27 | 0:24:28
It looks like he went against the pit wall. | 0:24:28 | 0:24:30
Let's hear what Jenson thought. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
'What was he doing?' | 0:24:33 | 0:24:34
I think he was trying to pass you, Jenson. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
But Jenson, obviously as you say, | 0:24:37 | 0:24:38
you can see nothing out of those mirrors. They're about... | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
Safety car out. Safety car is out. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
I would imagine because of the debris on the pit straight. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:46
Button in the pits. He's coming in under safety car. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
Jenson Button coming in, maybe for checks on his car to get the replay. | 0:24:49 | 0:24:53
So Lewis comes off the last chicane much, much faster. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:56
Jenson is making his way on what is the normal line. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
It was the merest of touches, wasn't it, actually? | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
Well, Lewis will say "He should have seen me coming." | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
He was slow off the corner. Intermediate tyres, were they not? | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
Going on the McLaren there. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:09
So Button, then, the first man on to the inters. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
Here's another replay of the contact. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:14
He's right up in behind there, probably employing kerbs. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:17
Then at that point, when he committed, the gap just reduced. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
There'll be an interesting debate between the drivers as to who | 0:25:20 | 0:25:23
was in the right and who was in the wrong. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Safety car is in this lap. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:26
How do you judge whether you're going to catch | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
the safety car or not? There it is. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:29
It's a really tough one, but he's got it right this time. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
Alonso is not as close, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:33
as long as he slows down at the right point for the corner. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:35
Alonso is not challenging quite... | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
Michael Schumacher trying to come up the inside of Nico Rosberg | 0:25:37 | 0:25:40
and gets away with it. Yeah, but pointless to do that. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:42
He's not allowed to overtake until the start-finish line. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:45
He can overtake on that first safety car line, for sure. | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
Red Bull leads Ferrari, Ferrari, then the two Mercedes of Rosberg | 0:25:47 | 0:25:52
and Michael Schumacher. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:54
Button 12th and under investigation. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
A drive-through penalty for car four - Jenson Button - | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
who is just in front of Paul di Resta - | 0:26:02 | 0:26:04
sorry Sutil, there. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
In fact, that was. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:08
He's past di Resta somewhere, so it was di Resta. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
So, Button has really made some gains in this lap, but he's got | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
a drive-through penalty for this safety-car speed-limit issue. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:21
That means that... What will that cost him? | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
About 20 seconds to just cruise through the pit lane. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
He's got to do it within three laps. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:27
Yeah, it'll be less than that, Martin. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
About 12 seconds it'll cost him. It's the time through the pit lane. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
That will bring him back out... | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
Well, probably down in about 16th place, I would imagine. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
Maybe even further down than that. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:39
Yeah, so Jenson is doing 62mph as they're | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
doing about 180 down the pit straight. It's a long run. | 0:26:42 | 0:26:46
It's a very unusual pit lane here where you feed into turn two, | 0:26:46 | 0:26:50
not into the first corner. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
He goes around the outside, slots in very nicely. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
Look how hard it's raining, David. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
It is now, yeah. | 0:26:57 | 0:26:58
Surely Jenson is going to start struggling now. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:00
You've got heavy spray coming up, and some aquaplaning. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:04
We've got a safety car out. | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
So safety car is deployed. Haven't seen any incidents at the moment. | 0:27:06 | 0:27:12
Fernando Alonso pitting under the safety car, so he's first to blink. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
Going back to wets, presumably. Yeah, indeed he will. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
But this is working out pretty well for Sebastian Vettel. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
Button does indeed pit. Well, that was short-lived. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
So by not reacting too quickly, Vettel | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
and Massa, Kobayashi up front, it's all worked out beautifully for them. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
There's so much water. You cannot restart the race like this. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:38
For the first car, it is already too dangerous. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:42
For the car behind, he doesn't see anything. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
Blind he goes into the water, | 0:27:44 | 0:27:46
aquaplanes and smashes the car. | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
So it is a red-flag situation. The race is effectively suspended. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:56
They're not allowed to go in the pit lane, | 0:27:56 | 0:27:58
otherwise they'll take a penalty. | 0:27:58 | 0:27:59
The cars can be worked on on the grid. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:03
They have to go to pole position and line up in race order | 0:28:03 | 0:28:07
when they get underway. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:08
That's a total red-flag period of two hours and four minutes. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:13
The safety car, then, has pulled away. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:18
We are back in racing conditions here on the Ile Notre Dame | 0:28:18 | 0:28:24
in the St Lawrence Seaway on the outskirts of Montreal. | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
So Vettel then takes over and becomes the safety car, effectively | 0:28:29 | 0:28:33
controlling the pace of the pack, got them all backed up at the hip. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:36
It's so easy to run into another driver in those circumstances | 0:28:36 | 0:28:40
while you're trying to keep your tyres and brakes warm. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
Vettel's bolted. He's going for it. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
He doesn't want Kobayashi anywhere near him | 0:28:45 | 0:28:47
as they arrive at the first safety car line. | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
Massa is closer to Kobayashi. Spray not too bad. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
Petrov on the right-hand side of the track for Renault. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
He's fighting off Paul di Resta who is down the outside. | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
Massa so close to Kobayashi. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:02
So a long wait for the safety car to get out of the way. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
Now the drivers are saying the track is so dry | 0:29:07 | 0:29:08
I'd like a set of intermediates, please, as Button pits as well. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:12
Another string of them - | 0:29:12 | 0:29:13
Heidfeld, di Resta, Button, | 0:29:13 | 0:29:14
de la Rosa, Alguersuari, Maldonado fancy the other tyres as well. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:21
Off Button goes down the pit lane. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:23
We've got a Ferrari off. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:26
Fernando Alonso's beached the Ferrari. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:30
Where is that? That's the second chicane. | 0:29:30 | 0:29:33
Yeah, it's in turn three, I think. Am I seeing that correctly? | 0:29:33 | 0:29:37
I think that's... Yeah, that's exit of three, four. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:40
Yeah, three and four. Safety car has been deployed - | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
our favourite car of the day gets another look in to this race. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:46
Button's got a puncture. Yeah, left-front. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
I wonder if there was contact. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:50
They shouldn't have been so close on the road, should they? | 0:29:50 | 0:29:53
Button, McLaren's... | 0:29:53 | 0:29:55
Vettel has pitted. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:57
I wonder if Jenson Button | 0:29:57 | 0:30:00
and Fernando Alonso got together somewhere. | 0:30:00 | 0:30:03
Vettel again making the best of some free space at the front. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
It just all keeps falling into place for Red Bull. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:11
Let's have look at this. Yes, it was Button up the inside of Alonso. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:15
Alonso didn't want to yield. Contact. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:21
That's Jenson's second contact of the afternoon. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
Jenson up the inside of Fernando. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
Fernando says you're not coming through there, | 0:30:27 | 0:30:29
and Jenson says well, you watch this. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
I am coming through. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:33
We're going to have to call that a racing incident. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
The McLaren of Button is in the pits. | 0:30:37 | 0:30:41
It's four pit stops and a drive-through for Button | 0:30:41 | 0:30:44
for exceeding the speed limit behind the safety car early on. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:50
Safety car will come in this lap. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
Jenson Button is way out back at the moment. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
Vettel bolts once more Kobayashi asleep once more, but Massa is not. | 0:30:55 | 0:31:01
Massa is right with him. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:02
To remind you, when they get to the safety car line, | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
they can start doing some overtaking. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:07
But Kobayashi has laid it up on the brakes. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
Heidfeld looking pretty punchy behind Massa, as well. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:13
Lots of action going on down the field, but once again, it's the | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
world champion and the championship leader, Sebastian Vettel, | 0:31:16 | 0:31:20
who clears the line. | 0:31:20 | 0:31:22
Jenson Button has just about caught the back of the snake | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
as he crosses the line. | 0:31:25 | 0:31:27
Webber well out of shape on the outside. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:29
Michael Schumacher then at turn 11 just cruises past Mark Webber. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:33
Too hot on the throttle. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:36
Michael Schumacher takes over sixth place there from Mark Webber. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:40
Di Resta up the inside. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:43
Damaged front wing. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
Paul, you've broken the front wing there. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
This is Massa side by side with Kobayashi for second place. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
Michael Schumacher looks like he's gone past the pair of them. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
Lots of action. Absolutely wild oversteer there. | 0:31:55 | 0:32:01
Schumacher has passed Massa and Kobayashi. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
Schumacher absolutely flying. Brilliant driving. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:07
This is where it all went wrong for Kobayashi - | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
he's gone wide in turn eight, contact there with Massa. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
Michael Schumacher sneaks up the inside | 0:32:13 | 0:32:16
while they're busy watching each other and takes second place. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:19
Not much that Kobayashi could do other than get back on the track. | 0:32:19 | 0:32:22
That just allows Michael the momentum. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
He would have been grinning inside that helmet. | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
Wunderbar. Yeah. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:29
That then is Button, who presumably has just pitted for slicks. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:33
That's Jenson's sixth trip through the pits today, | 0:32:33 | 0:32:35
five times to change his tyres. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:38
We've got a damaged nose front wing there of Felipe Massa, | 0:32:38 | 0:32:42
as Mark Webber goes through and is setting fastest sector | 0:32:42 | 0:32:46
after fastest sector, cars off all over the place, | 0:32:46 | 0:32:49
as they're trying to find grip on their tyres. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:52
The race leader pits for a fresh set of super-soft tyres. | 0:32:52 | 0:32:57
Here we are on the exit of turn seven. He gets out on the water. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:02
Of course, on the slick tyres, he's just aquaplaned. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
That was him trying to get past. | 0:33:05 | 0:33:06
He's broken his front wing. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:12
It's like none of these guys know where their front wing is. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:16
Oh. Right. There's a surprise. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
Thankfully there's plenty of run off down there. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:22
He parks it nicely out the way, so I don't expect any safety car | 0:33:22 | 0:33:25
unless there's some debris on the track. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
It's Nick Heidfeld. He got on the throttle. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:30
He got so much grip from that Renault in the slow corners. | 0:33:30 | 0:33:33
He just plain ran into the back of him. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:35
That was a little bit scary, but thankfully | 0:33:35 | 0:33:38
one of the areas on the track where there is a run-off area. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:41
Massively frustrating for the Renault guys, | 0:33:41 | 0:33:43
because they were looking for a good result here this weekend. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:45
But once again we're back with a battle with | 0:33:45 | 0:33:47
Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:49
But can he get off line to go past? | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
Look at Button catching them like crazy. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:56
He's P4 now. | 0:33:56 | 0:33:57
Button on a 20.2. | 0:33:57 | 0:33:58
He's two seconds quicker than the leader, Vettel. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
Bit of traffic ahead of him with d'Ambrosio in the Virgin. | 0:34:01 | 0:34:07
Jenson has got to tiptoe so carefully off the racing | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
line as they see the yellow flags so easy to pick up a puncture. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:14
It is. Normally that would be enough for them | 0:34:14 | 0:34:16
to throw a safety car for fear of... | 0:34:16 | 0:34:20
And we have. We've got a safety car out. | 0:34:20 | 0:34:22
Sebastian Vettel leads the restart for the fourth time this afternoon. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:28
DRS is not enabled at this time Schumacher down the outside. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:32
Yellow flags waving for some reason - | 0:34:32 | 0:34:35
presumably because the safety car was still in range, | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
but green flags now. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:40
Away they go. | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
Button has cleared the back marker. | 0:34:42 | 0:34:44
Webber again all over the back of Michael Schumacher. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
This is going to be a titanic scrap, isn't it? | 0:34:47 | 0:34:50
We saw Michael, was it last year? | 0:34:50 | 0:34:52
Where he just knocked the front wing... Mark Webber misses a corner. | 0:34:52 | 0:34:55
Oh! He's nearly lost it. | 0:34:55 | 0:34:57
Webber... Button sails past him, somehow finding enough grip. | 0:34:57 | 0:35:01
Mark Webber pushing his luck. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
Yellow flags waving in turn one, | 0:35:04 | 0:35:05
but Button had the move done well before then. | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
Webber drops back to fourth place. Vettel leads Schumacher by 3.8 | 0:35:08 | 0:35:12
from Jenson Button. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:14
Webber got in too hot, took the escape road, | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
did not gain a place, but nearly dropped it through the exit. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:21
Jenson said, "I'll have some of that, thank you. I'm out of here." | 0:35:21 | 0:35:25
Now it's Jenson chasing down Michael Schumacher. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:28
If he's within one second as he exits this corner, | 0:35:28 | 0:35:31
that line now, he gets the advantage of the rear wing. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
It'll pop open when they go over this next line. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:38
Surely he's got a great chance of coasting past whilst | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
Schumacher is looking in his mirror. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:43
Button goes the long way round. Is he ahead of him? Yes, he is! | 0:35:43 | 0:35:46
Button up into second place. He's got the pass done. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
Look at the difference in the speed | 0:35:49 | 0:35:51
when you've got DRS in the slipstream. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:53
Button is absolutely flying. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:56
He's 1.3 seconds quicker halfway around the current lap. | 0:35:56 | 0:36:02
Vettel is going to really have to show us what he's got now. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
Vettel's done a personal best - | 0:36:05 | 0:36:07
first and second sector. | 0:36:07 | 0:36:09
He's miles slower than that man - | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
second place, Jenson Button - | 0:36:11 | 0:36:13
who loves these conditions. | 0:36:13 | 0:36:15
Vettel watching in the mirror, the rear wing close. | 0:36:15 | 0:36:20
In the background, Schumacher defending hard | 0:36:20 | 0:36:22
against Webber. | 0:36:22 | 0:36:23
Schumacher defending incredibly hard. Webber's through. | 0:36:23 | 0:36:26
Webber's through. | 0:36:26 | 0:36:27
Can he keep it on the road this time? He does indeed. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
Schumacher drops down to fourth place. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:32
I think he came across the run-off area. | 0:36:32 | 0:36:35
Schumacher fourth, Webber third, Button - | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
a new fastest lap of the race, 1:17.5. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
The gap down to 1.3. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:41
Schumacher there once again without the rear wing and without... | 0:36:41 | 0:36:46
He did go across the escape road, actually, but he does not have | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
to yield anything on that one, he lost a place anyway. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:52
What's the gap as they go over the line? | 0:36:52 | 0:36:54
Vettel lead as he goes into the final lap by 0.9 of a second. | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
Button, a 1:16.9 - the new fastest lap of the race. | 0:36:57 | 0:37:00
Jenson Button driving for his life, driving for the victory. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:04
Has Vettel got what it takes to hold him off? | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
What else is happening - they're coming up in a pack of five cars. | 0:37:07 | 0:37:10
Remember Monaco, what happened there? They're coming up on Trulli | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
and a whole pack of cars which are going five-seconds-a-lap slower. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:16
So look out for them just in front of them. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
I think Vettel has gone wide. He's gone wide! | 0:37:19 | 0:37:21
He turned in too late! Button leads the Grand Prix. | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
Sebastian Vettel turned in with his tyres just touching the water. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:29
It's the final lap of the Grand Prix. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:31
Jenson Button, after an awful afternoon with so many things | 0:37:31 | 0:37:35
going wrong for him, leads this amazing Canadian Grand Prix. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:40
He set the fastest first sector of the Grand Prix | 0:37:40 | 0:37:43
while he was doing it. We see Vettel finally cracking. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:47
He's made a mistake. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:49
He is still going to finish second. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:51
That means he has never been outside the top two this year. | 0:37:51 | 0:37:54
But Sebastian Vettel finally shows he's human | 0:37:54 | 0:37:57
because of the pressure that this man, Jenson Button, put on him. | 0:37:57 | 0:38:02
All sorts going off in the final chicane here, | 0:38:02 | 0:38:04
but they're out of Button's way. Lots of traffic. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:07
Jenson Button into the pit straight. He wins a brilliant race. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:12
It's a sensational drive for Button. What a victory. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:16
Vettel limps home in second place. | 0:38:16 | 0:38:19
He'll be angry with himself, it's unlike him. | 0:38:19 | 0:38:21
Brilliant, Jenson. Absolutely brilliant. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:25
I think we've been in every position in that race, | 0:38:25 | 0:38:28
but we finished where it mattered. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:29
Fantastic. Great job, mate. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
JENSON LAUGHS | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
Guys! That was a hell of a race. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:36
A hell of a race. Thank you so much. Fantastic win. | 0:38:36 | 0:38:40
We deserved that for the race we've had. Thank you, guys, so much. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:45
It's been a long time coming. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:46
Well, hard work for Jenson Button, but it certainly paid off, didn't it? | 0:38:48 | 0:38:53
What it proved was that if you keep pressuring the bloke in front, | 0:38:53 | 0:38:57
he may make a mistake. That was Jenson's real hope. | 0:38:57 | 0:39:02
He really maintained that pressure on Sebastian Vettel, | 0:39:02 | 0:39:05
who made what turned out to be a fatal error, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
from the point of view of winning the race. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:10
He just moved a bit to the side and boom, Jenson was through, | 0:39:10 | 0:39:15
took the lead, won the race, absolutely brilliant. | 0:39:15 | 0:39:18
He's always such a popular winner, Jenson, isn't he? | 0:39:18 | 0:39:21
Well, rightly so, cos he's such a popular bloke. | 0:39:21 | 0:39:24
He's a lovely bloke, one of the nicest people there's ever | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
been in Formula One in my opinion. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:29
He very richly deserved the win. | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
Let's move forward, now, to Bahrain 2014. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
This was really all about the Mercedes boys. | 0:39:35 | 0:39:37
We'd had a Nico Rosberg win at the opener in Australia. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:40
Lewis had won the second race in Malaysia. | 0:39:40 | 0:39:43
But this one really did set up their rivalry, didn't it? | 0:39:43 | 0:39:46
It's worth remembering that 2014 was the first year of a new formula - | 0:39:46 | 0:39:53
the hybrid formula, | 0:39:53 | 0:39:54
where we've got these very, very complicated power units. | 0:39:54 | 0:39:58
Mercedes were in their fifth year | 0:39:58 | 0:40:00
of trying to come good in Formula One. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
My goodness, it was the season they turned out to dominate. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:07
But what really impressed me about Bahrain was it demonstrated | 0:40:07 | 0:40:11
what a great driver Nico Rosberg is. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:14
There had been some doubts in the past about just how good he was, | 0:40:14 | 0:40:18
we'd seen him race against Michael Schumacher | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
and beat the great German, but now he fought every inch of the way, | 0:40:21 | 0:40:25
constantly trying to get past Lewis Hamilton. | 0:40:25 | 0:40:27
He never actually quite succeeded. | 0:40:27 | 0:40:29
But if trying was the name of the game, | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
he would have won. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:33
It was an absolutely brilliant race | 0:40:33 | 0:40:36
which had us on the edge of our seats | 0:40:36 | 0:40:39
and restored a lot of people's faith in Formula One. | 0:40:39 | 0:40:41
Yes, because a lot of people at that time had been having a bit of a go, | 0:40:41 | 0:40:45
including Luca di Montezemolo who, at the time, | 0:40:45 | 0:40:47
was president at Ferrari. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:48
Who said that Formula One now was taxi-driving. | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
Pfft! There wasn't any taxi-driving in Bahrain, was there? | 0:40:51 | 0:40:55
It was belting wheel-to-wheel action. Let's have a look. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:57
So, let's take a look, then, at the grid. | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
It is Nico Rosberg with back-to-back poles in Bahrain, | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
and Hamilton alongside him for his 60th front-row start. | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
Bottas and Perez both matching their best-ever grid positions, | 0:41:19 | 0:41:23
both of them looking for a first podium. | 0:41:23 | 0:41:25
Raikkonen lines up in fifth place, with Jenson Button, | 0:41:25 | 0:41:28
his best grid position this year, alongside. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:30
Felipe Massa in the second Williams, | 0:41:30 | 0:41:32
his best starting spot of the year too. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:34
Magnussen starting in the same place as he did in Malaysia. | 0:41:34 | 0:41:37
Then Alonso in ninth place, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:38
then Sebastian Vettel in tenth. That's quite some fifth row. | 0:41:38 | 0:41:41
Hulkenberg starts behind them, | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
Daniil Kvyat, the Russian in 12. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:45
Then it's Daniel Ricciardo with his penalty, | 0:41:45 | 0:41:48
but potentially a fast car, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
and Jean-Eric Vergne who lines up next. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:52
Who's going to blaze to glory in the desert night? | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
We're about to find out. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:57
Lights out! Away we go. | 0:41:57 | 0:41:59
Who's it going to be off the front row? | 0:41:59 | 0:42:01
Rosberg trying to cover, Hamilton up on the inside. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:04
Bottas making a good start. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
Hamilton's got a good start | 0:42:06 | 0:42:08
and he's going to lead, I think, into the first corner. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:11
What a crucial getaway for Lewis Hamilton, | 0:42:11 | 0:42:13
as Massa makes an excellent start. | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
Massa is the first of the two Williams. | 0:42:15 | 0:42:17
He's gone past Perez, riding on board here with Jenson Button. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:21
Now, look, the battle up front. | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
Rosberg trying to come round the outside of Lewis Hamilton! | 0:42:24 | 0:42:27
Oh, they almost touch! | 0:42:27 | 0:42:28
We just lose sight of them for a moment | 0:42:28 | 0:42:31
but they both managed to get away with it, Hamilton in front. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
It's so crucial to have that lead advantage. | 0:42:34 | 0:42:37
Question for you. If Rosberg had had somebody else on his inside, | 0:42:37 | 0:42:41
would he be more aggressive coming across here? | 0:42:41 | 0:42:44
You've got to not treat your team-mate any differently. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:47
The rules of combat are you don't make contact with any car. | 0:42:47 | 0:42:50
You can damage your own. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:51
You can see there, Nico Rosberg just being driven off the track | 0:42:51 | 0:42:55
by Lewis Hamilton. He's saying, "We may be old karting buddies | 0:42:55 | 0:42:57
"but I want this Grand Prix and I want this championship", | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
so gloves are off. Now, here he goes for the outside. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:04
This is a place where some guys have been able to overtake, | 0:43:04 | 0:43:06
but Lewis says, "Yeah, I'm using all the road, Nico. Forget it! | 0:43:06 | 0:43:10
"This is my corner." | 0:43:10 | 0:43:11
'So, remember, Nico, we have the alternative strategy | 0:43:11 | 0:43:15
'which we'll be going for, which means you need to go longer | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18
'on this first stint, looking after the tyres.' | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
I wonder if they're going to do different strategies | 0:43:20 | 0:43:23
between the two cars, or whether they'll both follow the same. | 0:43:23 | 0:43:26
We'll have to wait and see exactly. Hamilton has the advantage. | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
Perez on Massa, so these two are fighting for third place now. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:33
And Felipe Massa... Bottas has very little grip left. | 0:43:33 | 0:43:36
There's no answer, I don't think, | 0:43:36 | 0:43:38
and Perez is going to take the place. He does. | 0:43:38 | 0:43:40
Up into third place goes Sergio Perez for Force India. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:44
Oh, and pulling over is Adrian Sutil. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
It's been a miserable weekend... | 0:43:47 | 0:43:49
He's missing something on his rear tyre. | 0:43:49 | 0:43:51
There's no marking on that left rear. | 0:43:51 | 0:43:53
So has he rubbed up against something before...pitting? | 0:43:53 | 0:43:57
That's unusual. Was there contact here? | 0:43:57 | 0:43:59
Let's take a look. He's dicing with Jules Bianchi. | 0:43:59 | 0:44:02
Side by side... | 0:44:02 | 0:44:03
This is where the yellow line's going to disappear. | 0:44:03 | 0:44:07
That was a great spot, David! Absolutely brilliant. | 0:44:07 | 0:44:10
Bianchi and Sutil came together. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:12
I have a five-year-old. I do a lot of colouring in! | 0:44:12 | 0:44:15
Take another look at... Oh, my goodness! | 0:44:15 | 0:44:18
Was that after? That was after. Yeah. | 0:44:18 | 0:44:21
Look at this! Side by side. | 0:44:22 | 0:44:24
You're looking at the battle. Rosberg's got past Lewis Hamilton... | 0:44:24 | 0:44:27
No, he hasn't! Hamilton retakes it. Wonderful racing up front | 0:44:27 | 0:44:31
between the two Mercedes team-mates. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:33
Not only did he retake it, | 0:44:33 | 0:44:34
that is the equivalent of a slap in the face | 0:44:34 | 0:44:37
as he cut across the front wing of Rosberg. | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
'Warn him. That was not on!' | 0:44:40 | 0:44:42
I couldn't interpret that. He said, "Warn him. That was not on." OK. | 0:44:44 | 0:44:48
But what we have to say is, "Thank you, Mercedes Grand Prix, | 0:44:48 | 0:44:50
"for allowing your men to go wheel-to-wheel." | 0:44:50 | 0:44:53
Down the inside into turn one, | 0:44:53 | 0:44:55
Lewis gives him the corner | 0:44:55 | 0:44:57
and sets it up to do the cutback, which he does do, | 0:44:57 | 0:45:00
and then it's the fact he squeezed across the front of Rosberg. | 0:45:00 | 0:45:03
We're going to see it from Nico's point of view. | 0:45:03 | 0:45:05
He goes down the inside, now look for Lewis appearing on the right. | 0:45:05 | 0:45:09
As he does, he has to take avoiding action. | 0:45:09 | 0:45:11
That's what's upset Nico. | 0:45:11 | 0:45:13
That was close to contact. | 0:45:13 | 0:45:15
Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe both looking a little worried. | 0:45:15 | 0:45:17
This is another replay of that. The DRS was in operation... | 0:45:17 | 0:45:21
In fact, this is now. | 0:45:21 | 0:45:22
He's having another go. He's locked up a little bit. | 0:45:22 | 0:45:26
Has be got in front this time? Yes? No? | 0:45:26 | 0:45:28
Hamilton can't fend him off this time! Rosberg's got him! | 0:45:28 | 0:45:31
He has got past him. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:32
So Rosberg takes the lead, | 0:45:32 | 0:45:34
but will he have the run down towards turn four? | 0:45:34 | 0:45:37
He moves to the inside now. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:39
Over the dirt, over the dust! | 0:45:39 | 0:45:40
Hamilton will try and go round the outside | 0:45:40 | 0:45:43
and try and come back on the exit. | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
Wow! This is amazing racing between the two Mercedes team-mates! | 0:45:45 | 0:45:48
Side by side! Hamilton retakes the place! | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
He retakes the lead at the Bahrain Grand Prix | 0:45:51 | 0:45:54
and there is nothing to choose between them! | 0:45:54 | 0:45:57
That's how hungry they both are. This is brilliant. | 0:45:57 | 0:46:00
This is brilliant, brilliant stuff. | 0:46:00 | 0:46:02
Hamilton still in front of Nico Rosberg, | 0:46:02 | 0:46:06
but Rosberg throwing everything at him, | 0:46:06 | 0:46:08
but he'd just gone on the dirt and that probably was why | 0:46:08 | 0:46:11
he didn't quite have the grip at the next corner, | 0:46:11 | 0:46:14
and the driver having to think about so many different things | 0:46:14 | 0:46:18
in a battle like this, and still trying to look after their tyres. | 0:46:18 | 0:46:21
But they are 35 seconds ahead of anyone else. | 0:46:21 | 0:46:23
They don't have to worry about being caught by their opposition. | 0:46:23 | 0:46:27
Hamilton will be in this lap. OK. | 0:46:27 | 0:46:29
So the first pit stop. This is crucial. | 0:46:29 | 0:46:31
Every 100th of a second on this pit stop could make a difference. | 0:46:31 | 0:46:34
That's a lovely, lovely stop for Lewis Hamilton. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:37
He's on his way once again. | 0:46:37 | 0:46:39
He's now got the new tyres so he'll be very fast on this next lap. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:43
2.7-second stop. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:45
'So using DRS, push hard now for two laps. Push hard for two laps, | 0:46:45 | 0:46:49
'then we go to alternative strategy.' | 0:46:49 | 0:46:52
So, he's going for the other tyre. Wow. | 0:46:52 | 0:46:54
This is really going to be interesting. | 0:46:54 | 0:46:56
We won't know how this works out | 0:46:56 | 0:46:58
until towards the end of the Grand Prix. | 0:46:58 | 0:47:00
Rosberg coming in on this lap. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:02
So is he going to be switching onto the medium compounds? | 0:47:02 | 0:47:07
Let's take a look. | 0:47:07 | 0:47:08
It is indeed. | 0:47:08 | 0:47:10
So a completely different strategy there for Rosberg. | 0:47:10 | 0:47:13
He puts the harder tyre on early in the race | 0:47:13 | 0:47:16
and that's going to make life very exciting. | 0:47:16 | 0:47:19
Two-tenths slower on the pit stop. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:20
Hamilton will be ahead. Let's just watch them as they come out. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:23
There's Hamilton on the right. | 0:47:23 | 0:47:24
Now the gap has opened up but they're on different strategies. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:28
He's got a great run here, Hulkenberg, and Massa knows it. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:31
Both Mercedes-powered and Hulkenberg goes to the inside. | 0:47:31 | 0:47:34
Almost over the white line, but just holds it. He'll lose momentum. | 0:47:34 | 0:47:37
Watch Perez. Yeah, Perez could get him here. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:40
They're going to go side by side, team-mates battle again | 0:47:40 | 0:47:43
and this time it's Perez who gets past Hulkenberg | 0:47:43 | 0:47:46
because Hulkenberg tried so hard to get past the Williams. | 0:47:46 | 0:47:49
Oh, Daniel Ricciardo in full DRS and locks up! | 0:47:51 | 0:47:55
He's locked up and, meanwhile, | 0:47:55 | 0:47:57
there's an attack on Massa from Perez. | 0:47:57 | 0:47:59
Perez now going to have a little look at getting alongside him | 0:47:59 | 0:48:02
And Hulkenberg right behind. Side by side, Perez with Massa. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:05
Side by side through turn five and he's done it! | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
Wow, Sergio Perez driving out of his skin here this weekend | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
and Hulkenberg's got the chance to nip past the Williams, as well. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:16
But Sergio Perez fought for every inch. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:18
Look for the cut back. He does, indeed. | 0:48:18 | 0:48:20
Hulkenberg. Does he have the power | 0:48:20 | 0:48:21
to out-drive the Williams like the Ferrari? | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
He's on the outside as they come down to turn nine. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:26
Good, clean racing from both guys there and Hulkenberg | 0:48:26 | 0:48:29
also gets past the Williams. | 0:48:29 | 0:48:31
Gets on it sideways on the exit though and that cost him speed | 0:48:31 | 0:48:33
and Massa's going to be able to come back at him here as they | 0:48:33 | 0:48:36
come down towards turn 11. | 0:48:36 | 0:48:38
He's going to try going down the inside. | 0:48:38 | 0:48:40
But Hulkenberg can just fend him off. | 0:48:40 | 0:48:42
Who said this was taxi-driving? | 0:48:42 | 0:48:44
This is racing! | 0:48:44 | 0:48:45
Now, this is the replay of Perez and how he got past Massa. | 0:48:45 | 0:48:48
Well, a move he's made work for him so many times on this circuit. | 0:48:48 | 0:48:52
He just straightens the car as much as possible on the exit of four | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
and he gets a massive drive off through five | 0:48:55 | 0:48:58
into that high-speed chicane. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:00
'OK, Lewis, we're safe on fuel so no more lift and coast. | 0:49:00 | 0:49:03
'No more lift and coast. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:04
'I heard you, man, I'm looking after my tyres.' | 0:49:04 | 0:49:07
And Hamilton being very cautious. He knows he's still in a race. | 0:49:09 | 0:49:12
Oh, we've got a shunt! | 0:49:13 | 0:49:14
That's a Sauber and a Lotus going around the outside. | 0:49:14 | 0:49:18
It must be Gutierrez cos Sutil out of the race earlier on. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:21
This might be a safety car, Ben. They're not going to push that away. | 0:49:21 | 0:49:25
No, that must surely be a safety car. | 0:49:25 | 0:49:26
Only the second time in Bahrain race history | 0:49:26 | 0:49:29
that we would have a safety car. | 0:49:29 | 0:49:30
Look at the top, the camera's gone off the top, so he's gone over. | 0:49:30 | 0:49:35
Yeah, the car has flipped, I would suggest. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:37
Let's take a look and see what happened. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:40
Was he exiting the pits there? Oh, he was on the outside. | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
And the other car was coming out and they just didn't see each other. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:48
Yes, that's right. | 0:49:48 | 0:49:50
'Whoa, what was that!' | 0:49:50 | 0:49:51
He didn't even know it was there. It was Pastor Maldonado. | 0:49:51 | 0:49:56
Oh, my goodness! | 0:49:56 | 0:49:57
Meanwhile, Hamilton and Rosberg have taken their stops. | 0:49:59 | 0:50:02
And the safety car is out. | 0:50:02 | 0:50:04
'Nico, it's Paddy here. | 0:50:05 | 0:50:06
'There are about ten laps left to race, | 0:50:06 | 0:50:09
'can we just make sure we bring both cars home? | 0:50:09 | 0:50:11
'OK.' | 0:50:11 | 0:50:12 | |
OK, well, same message to both drivers as a team boss. | 0:50:12 | 0:50:17
As an engineer, you can do no more than ask them to play nice. | 0:50:17 | 0:50:20
Yeah, but they didn't actually say hold station, | 0:50:22 | 0:50:24
They just said bring the cars home. Does that mean they can go racing? | 0:50:24 | 0:50:28
Of course it does. Good. | 0:50:28 | 0:50:29
The safety car will be coming in this lap and we will be in | 0:50:30 | 0:50:33
for a ten-lap sprint | 0:50:33 | 0:50:35
to decide the outcome of the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix. | 0:50:35 | 0:50:38
Hamilton on the harder of the two tyres | 0:50:38 | 0:50:40
and look at how he's opening the gap to the safety car. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:43
He wants to make the break. Rosberg on the softer tyre. | 0:50:43 | 0:50:46
The two Force Indias behind. Away he goes, Lewis Hamilton! | 0:50:46 | 0:50:49
Gets on the gas, slides his way through the last corner, | 0:50:49 | 0:50:52
chased immediately by Nico Rosberg. | 0:50:52 | 0:50:54
They've both been told to keep these cars in one piece | 0:50:54 | 0:50:57
and get them to the chequered flag. In the background, | 0:50:57 | 0:51:00
you can also see the two Force Indias side by side, | 0:51:00 | 0:51:03
charging for it. Hulkenberg coming down the outside of his team-mate. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:07
Perez trying to turn in him. Oh, and Perez squeezes him out, | 0:51:07 | 0:51:11
very aggressively. Button will feel that. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
He'll be trying to take advantage, | 0:51:13 | 0:51:15
but he's got his own problems with Vettel behind. | 0:51:15 | 0:51:17
The two Mercedes are side-by-side. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:20
Once again, Hamilton and Rosberg. | 0:51:20 | 0:51:22
Rosberg trying to go around the outside. Can he do it? | 0:51:22 | 0:51:24
No, Hamilton will shut the door on Rosberg | 0:51:24 | 0:51:27
as he did in the earlier part of the Grand Prix. | 0:51:27 | 0:51:29
But Rosberg with the softer tyre, Perez still in third place. | 0:51:29 | 0:51:33
Hulkenberg in fourth. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:34
Button in fifth place, then Vettel and Ricciardo. | 0:51:34 | 0:51:37
All of them. You can see the leaders just up ahead. | 0:51:37 | 0:51:39
To give them that extra spice to see what | 0:51:39 | 0:51:41
they can get out of this Grand Prix. | 0:51:41 | 0:51:43
Ricciardo isn't just going to sit behind his team-mate. | 0:51:43 | 0:51:46
Vettel's got a chance here of getting past Jenson Button. | 0:51:46 | 0:51:49
Ten-second stop and go for Maldonado. Button's wide. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:55
Yeah, he's made a mistake. | 0:51:55 | 0:51:56
Vettel's through. | 0:51:56 | 0:51:58
Can Button come back at him? | 0:51:59 | 0:52:01
He will be kicking himself | 0:52:01 | 0:52:03
but another chance for Ricciardo, as well. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:05
Button loses his place. | 0:52:05 | 0:52:07
He's down to sixth place now with Ricciardo chasing after him | 0:52:07 | 0:52:10
as meanwhile, Perez holds on to third. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:13
And Ricciardo sweeps past Button, as well. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:15
The DRS is indeed open but he's just a little bit too far back, | 0:52:17 | 0:52:21
certainly on this lap, to have ago. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23
Once again, Hamilton is quicker in that sector. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25
A full tenth faster than his team-mate. | 0:52:25 | 0:52:28
And that might be the saving position this afternoon | 0:52:28 | 0:52:30
as Ricciardo comes on his team-mate. | 0:52:30 | 0:52:32
Yeah, Ricciardo down the inside of Vettel | 0:52:32 | 0:52:34
and he's going to make the move stick, I think. | 0:52:34 | 0:52:36
Daniel Ricciardo passes the four-times world champion, | 0:52:36 | 0:52:38
his team-mate, and takes that place. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:41
He's into fifth. | 0:52:41 | 0:52:42
Just gone past our commentary position and I can tell you, | 0:52:42 | 0:52:44
Rosberg didn't look quite close enough to challenge on this lap. | 0:52:44 | 0:52:48
There you are, onboard, he is having a go! | 0:52:48 | 0:52:50
He's going from a long way back. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:52
And Rosberg going side-by-side with Hamilton, | 0:52:52 | 0:52:54
once again, but Hamilton just able to fend him off, | 0:52:54 | 0:52:57
but it's not over yet. | 0:52:57 | 0:52:58
He's got a good exit here. | 0:52:58 | 0:52:59
They run up towards turn four. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:01
He'll move to the outside. | 0:53:01 | 0:53:02
He's tried this several times and Hamilton has hung him out to dry. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:06
He's going to try it again. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:07
Hamilton will again squeeze him over the white line. | 0:53:07 | 0:53:10
Oh, my goodness! Don't touch! They're so close! | 0:53:10 | 0:53:13
But, again, they get away with it. | 0:53:13 | 0:53:15
And they were told to bring the cars back in one piece. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:18
If they carry on like this, that might not happen! | 0:53:18 | 0:53:20
Rosberg still on the charge, here. He's on the better tyre. | 0:53:20 | 0:53:23
They have the same car. He's got a lot of anger in that belly. | 0:53:23 | 0:53:27
I don't see how Hamilton could hold this for the remaining laps. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:30
Still, amazing watching him drive, | 0:53:30 | 0:53:32
because there, he was just flicking the brake balance, | 0:53:32 | 0:53:34
changing the brake balance between corners. | 0:53:34 | 0:53:36
I know we see that so often, | 0:53:36 | 0:53:38
but when they're in the middle of a dice like that - | 0:53:38 | 0:53:40
the control, the thought processes that are going on here... | 0:53:40 | 0:53:42
Now, he's going to have a look at the inside, | 0:53:42 | 0:53:44
but no, that's the other DRS zone. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
It's a tough place to overtake. It is possible, but not easy. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:50
They're doing this wheel-to-wheel racing | 0:53:50 | 0:53:52
and they're going three seconds a lap quicker than the opposition. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:55
They have a 14-second gap, already! | 0:53:55 | 0:53:57
This is the first time we've really seen them in race conditions. | 0:53:57 | 0:54:01
They have to go flat out, because they are racing each other | 0:54:01 | 0:54:04
and they are, as you say, three seconds faster than Perez. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:08
Expect to see Rosberg with the DRS having a go again, | 0:54:08 | 0:54:11
down into turn one. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:12
Is he going to try another strategy? | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
Leave Hamilton alone into one and try and get the run clean into four? | 0:54:14 | 0:54:19
Here we go. The DRS is open. Just five laps to go. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
Rosberg has got to find something different to do here. | 0:54:23 | 0:54:26
Hamilton defends. Oh, he's down the inside, but he's too deep this time. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:30
Surely, he still gets it into the corner - | 0:54:30 | 0:54:32
and Hamilton cuts back again. | 0:54:32 | 0:54:35
Oh, well - Hamilton read that beautifully! | 0:54:35 | 0:54:38
He's such an instinctive racer, but again, | 0:54:38 | 0:54:40
he's going to have to defend here, | 0:54:40 | 0:54:42
because Rosberg's got the outside line. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:44
Now, can he come back on the exit? | 0:54:44 | 0:54:46
Hamilton's not going to let him do that, I don't think. | 0:54:46 | 0:54:49
This is wonderful. How is he doing this? | 0:54:52 | 0:54:55
How is he keeping Rosberg behind? | 0:54:55 | 0:54:58
There's confrontation between these two drivers, | 0:54:58 | 0:55:01
who have known each other for so long. | 0:55:01 | 0:55:03
Ricciardo - now, did he make a move on Hulkenberg? Let's just see. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:07
Hulkenberg's been struggling and I think Ricardo's made the move | 0:55:07 | 0:55:10
and he's into fourth place - yes, he is. | 0:55:10 | 0:55:12
Out of the points now, with Jenson Button in 11th. He's going slowly. | 0:55:13 | 0:55:18
He's going very slowly. | 0:55:18 | 0:55:20
Jenson Button in 11th - he was, but he's dropped to 13th already, | 0:55:20 | 0:55:24
as Grosjean has gone past | 0:55:24 | 0:55:27
and he's coming to a halt, I think. | 0:55:27 | 0:55:29
So, we've lost both McLarens. | 0:55:29 | 0:55:32
My goodness, what a long time it has been | 0:55:32 | 0:55:34
since two McLarens failed to finish, | 0:55:34 | 0:55:37
although it did happen here in Bahrain in the past, | 0:55:37 | 0:55:40
when both cars went out on the same day, | 0:55:40 | 0:55:43
but it's very, very unusual in modern Formula One. | 0:55:43 | 0:55:46
Massa now goes on the attack, with Sebastian Vettel, | 0:55:46 | 0:55:50
who goes a little bit too deep into turn one. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:53
But there's no way through, just yet. | 0:55:53 | 0:55:55
Well, he'll have the run as they come through three | 0:55:55 | 0:55:57
on their way down to four. | 0:55:57 | 0:55:59
Vettel's going to have to go defensive. Oh, look at that! | 0:55:59 | 0:56:01
He's on the sand, he's in the dust and he goes down the inside | 0:56:01 | 0:56:04
and Massa has got past! | 0:56:04 | 0:56:06
Sebastian Vettel will come back at him on the exit. | 0:56:06 | 0:56:09
Superior grip and he is able to retake it. Read that perfectly. | 0:56:09 | 0:56:12
Squeezed Massa as much as he could. | 0:56:12 | 0:56:14
Massa didn't give it up for one moment. | 0:56:14 | 0:56:17
And this is fantastic racing here, this afternoon. Remarkable. | 0:56:17 | 0:56:21
Everyone said the new rules would turn it into an economy drive. | 0:56:21 | 0:56:24
We have not seen that at all today. | 0:56:24 | 0:56:26
We have seen drivers going for it hard, trying to overtake, | 0:56:26 | 0:56:29
overtaking, being rebuffed. | 0:56:29 | 0:56:32
And now, Alonso catching up the two Williams, | 0:56:32 | 0:56:34
which have really not shown the pace | 0:56:34 | 0:56:36
in this latter part of the Grand Prix that we were expecting. | 0:56:36 | 0:56:40
And in comes Button, into retirement. | 0:56:40 | 0:56:42
What a sad way to end his 250th Grand Prix. | 0:56:42 | 0:56:45
But I can tell you that Lewis Hamilton | 0:56:46 | 0:56:49
is on the penultimate straight. | 0:56:49 | 0:56:51
He's coming up towards the last two corners | 0:56:51 | 0:56:53
and I think that Lewis Hamilton has done enough, | 0:56:53 | 0:56:56
despite the best attempts of Rosberg. | 0:56:56 | 0:56:59
Lewis Hamilton wins the Bahrain Grand Prix! | 0:56:59 | 0:57:03
It's a one-two finish for Mercedes, once again. | 0:57:03 | 0:57:06
Back-to-back victories within a week for Lewis Hamilton. | 0:57:06 | 0:57:10
His first win in Bahrain and his 24th career victory, | 0:57:10 | 0:57:14
to match Juan Manuel Fangio. | 0:57:14 | 0:57:17
Sergio Perez brings Force India a podium finish. | 0:57:17 | 0:57:21
Fantastic for them! | 0:57:21 | 0:57:22
The last time they did that - | 0:57:22 | 0:57:24
the only time they did that - was 2009. | 0:57:24 | 0:57:26
Absolutely breathtaking stuff, wasn't it? | 0:57:28 | 0:57:30
And what's interesting about those two, of course, | 0:57:30 | 0:57:32
is that they've been friends for such a long time. | 0:57:32 | 0:57:34
They were karting together as children. | 0:57:34 | 0:57:36
They know each other inside out, | 0:57:36 | 0:57:38
but here they are, going for one prize. | 0:57:38 | 0:57:40
Only one of them could win. It's no wonder they fell out, is it? | 0:57:40 | 0:57:43
No, it's no wonder they fell out, | 0:57:43 | 0:57:45
with the pressures that applied to both of them. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:47
But happily, the friendship seems to have continued. | 0:57:47 | 0:57:50
But it's a very interesting situation, | 0:57:50 | 0:57:52
because on the one hand, you've got Lewis the racer | 0:57:52 | 0:57:56
and on the other hand, you've got Nico the thinker. | 0:57:56 | 0:57:59
Sometimes, one attribute takes precedence, | 0:57:59 | 0:58:02
sometimes, the other attribute takes precedence. | 0:58:02 | 0:58:05
But whichever one takes precedence, it's great for us. | 0:58:05 | 0:58:08
It certainly does. It always gives us something to talk about, doesn't it? | 0:58:08 | 0:58:12
That's just about all we've got time for on today's show, | 0:58:12 | 0:58:14
so it's goodbye from him... | 0:58:14 | 0:58:16
..and it's goodbye from her. LAUGHTER | 0:58:16 | 0:58:18
See you next time! | 0:58:18 | 0:58:19 |
